Manchester United vs CSKA Moskow[/SIZE][/B]

Sebelum melakoni another EPL's big match di Stamford Bridge pada hari minggu (8/11), United akan menjamu pesaingnya di UCL dari Rusia, CSKA Moscow. Setelah pada laga match day # 3 lalu, United berhasil mencuri 3 point dari kandang mereka dan melengkapi nilai sempurna 9 pts dari 3 laga, rasanya partai ini lebih bernuansa gengsi setan merah sebagai tuan rumah. Selain menjaga rekor tak terkalahkan United sebagai tuan rumah (udah berapa kali yaa :-/), United, imo, masih perlu mematangkan formasi mainnya untuk musim ini, diakui atau tidak, penampilan anak2x setan merah masih jauh dari memuaskan pada beberapa pertandingan terakhir, meski pada beberapa laga masih bisa meraih hasil sempurna, but hmmm, masih kurang meyakinkan. Yah partay ini bisa sebagai persiapan lah sebelum menghadapi Chelsea.

CSKA sendiri yang pada pertandingan pertama tampak bermain tidak 100% (meski maen di kandang), tentunya akan bermain all out untuk mengamankan peluang lolos ke babak selanjutnya. Sekarang ini masih punya point 3 dari sekali menang dan 2 kali kalah. Di bawah Wolfsburg dengan 4 pts.

Manchester - Penampilan Manchester United dalam beberapa laga terakhir terbilang turun-naik. Menghadapi pekan yang berat, The Red Devils pun mencari konsistensi.

Tengok lima pertandingan terakhir mereka di Premier League. MU memang berhasil meraih tiga kemenangan, tetapi hasil-hasil tersebut juga diselingi dengan satu hasil imbang dan satu kekalahan.

Usai menang 2-0 atas Stoke City, mereka kemudian ditahan imbang 2-2 oleh Sunderland. Setelahnya tiga poin berhasil didapat lagi dengan menekuk Bolton Wanderers 2-1. Namun selanjutnya, Wayne Rooney cs. malah kalah 0-2 dari Liverpool.

Sir Alex Ferguson cukup sadar bahwa performa timnya tengah angin-anginan. Masalahnya ini pekan yang cukup ketat untuk MU. Mereka bakal dihadapkan dengan CSKA Moscow di Liga Champions pada tengah pekan, sebelum bertemu Chelsea di akhir pekan.

Kemenangan atas CSKA bakal membuat MU memastikan satu tempat di fase knock-out Liga Champions, yang berarti bisa membuat mereka bisa lebih fokus ke liga. Sementara kemenangan atas Chelsea bisa membuat mereka naik ke puncak klasemen lagi. Dua laga itu sama pentingnya.

"Ini liga yang sulit. Kami cukup berpengalaman dan tahu bahwa untuk menjuarai liga itu sulit," ujar Fergie di Sportinglife.

"Musim ini pun sama. Yang menguntungkan adalah kami sadar bahwa ini liga yang sulit."

Apa yang dikatakan Fergie juga diamini oleh Michael Carrick. Gelandang internasional Inggris ini lebih spesifik dengan mengomentari laga melawan Chelsea. Menurutnya, The Blues selalu sukar dihadapi jika bermain di Stamford Bridge.

"Pertandingan di Stamford Bridge selalu menjadi partai besar. Tak peduli dalam keadaan apa pun. Dalam situasi papan atas yang seperti ini, setelah kalah dari Liverpool, kami tak mau kalah lagi dari tim besar," tandasnya.

Expectant father Wayne Rooney absent from Manchester United training
Wayne Rooney was absent from Manchester United training this morning amid speculation that wife Colleen is set to give birth to the couple's first child.

The birth is nine days overdue and Rooney's absence has heightened belief that the England striker is shortly to become a father for the first time.

If this is the case, Rooney will almost certainly be excused from duty against CSKA Moscow at Old Trafford on Tuesday, given United require just one more win to qualify for the knockout phase.

Central defensive duo Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic were also absent with ankle problems.

Vidic is understood to have an outside chance of facing the Russians. But Ferdinand, 31 this Saturday, has been ruled out by Sir Alex Ferguson, who admits the England man must now focus on getting fit for Sunday's trip to Chelsea.

Jonny Evans and Wes Brown combined against Blackburn to help United keep their first clean sheet in the league since the 2-0 win at Stoke in September.

And although the pair remain understudies to Ferdinand and Vidic, Ferguson insists there are very few partnerships as good as United's back-up centre-halves.

He said: "A lot has been made about Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic being out, but when you have the back-up of Jonny Evans and Wes Brown it can't be bad.

"There aren't many partnerships in the Premier League better than Brown and Evans.

"We sent Vidic to a specialist and, hopefully, he's going to be all right on Tuesday.

"Rio is having treatment and Ryan Giggs, too, so neither will make Tuesday and we have a fight on our hands to have them ready for Chelsea on Sunday."

Dimitar Berbatov was also missing from training, but there was some good news as Park Ji-sung was able to return after a recent absence with fluid on his knee.

The Reds were without five first-team regulars during Monday's training session ahead of the Champions League clash with CSKA Moscow.

Ryan Giggs, Rio Ferdinand, Nemanja Vidic, Wayne Rooney and Dimitar Berbatov sat out preparations for Tuesday night's game at Old Trafford, while young striker Danny Welbeck was also missing.

On a more positive note, Darren Fletcher, Ji-sung Park and Darron Gibson all trained having missed the last few weeks through injury.

Sir Alex is expected to reveal more about this morning's absentees at his pre-match press conference at 14:00 GMT.

Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has confirmed Darren Fletcher will start Tuesday's UEFA Champions League clash with CSKA Moscow.

However, Ferguson will make a late decision on Wayne Rooney's participation after his wife gave birth.

Rio Ferdinand, Nemanja Vidic, Park Ji-sung and Ryan Giggs are all still ruled out for the game at Old Trafford after missing the weekend win over Blackburn, while Dimitar Berbatov is doubtful after missing training on Monday.

Fletcher was an unused substitute in the victory over Blackburn, but he will return to the starting line-up as Ferguson looks to get the Scot some match action under his belt ahead of this weekend's visit to Chelsea.

"Darren was a substitute on Saturday and will play on Tuesday," said Ferguson.

"I think most people recognise Fletcher as a big game player. We've been aware of that for quite a while. Now there's an acceptance among most people that he's a very important player for us.

"He has been missed in some key games recently so it will be good to have him back."

Ferguson confirmed Rooney missed training on Monday after his pregnant wife was taken into hospital and he is waiting to see if the England star will be available to face the Russians.

Victory over the Russians will secure United's place in the knock-out stages...

Form guide: The Reds are aiming for a fourth straight Champions League victory and a double over CSKA following last month's 1-0 win in Moscow courtesy of Antonio Valencia's late strike. The Russian club have changed managers since the last meeting with Leonid Slutsky taking over from Juande Ramos. The new boss has already enjoyed some success - his first match in charge, on Friday, resulted in a win over FC Terek Grozny. He spent 12 months at the Bernabeu earlier in his career and Michael Owen hopes to be back there again next May, this time with the Reds.

Last season's Champions League runners-up can seal qualification for the knock-out stages with a win over CSKA Moscow at Old Trafford on Tuesday night.

With doubts over the availability of Wayne Rooney and Dimitar Berbatov, Owen is likely to start against the Russians. Having never won the competition, the 29-year-old is relishing the opportunity to play his part in the Reds' quest for Champions League glory and is desperate to help his team-mates book a third consecutive final spot in Madrid next May.

"It’s everybody’s dream [to win the Champions League] and coming to a club like Manchester United you’re always competing at the top level," he told reporters at United's pre-match press conference.

"That's one of the things you look at when you’re first asked to join the club. It’s one of the big things that stuck in my mind – playing in big European games and top League games is everybody’s dream.

"It’s very difficult to win these competitions but it’s our aim to do that and it’s exciting to be part of it."

Four months into his United career, Owen says he feels completely at home at Old Trafford and is pleased with his progress to date.

"I've loved every minute of it. It’s been everything I expected... and more," he insists. "Everybody has been so welcoming, right from the coaching staff, the canteen ladies and the kit man, not to mention the lads and the fans. I’m really pleased that the fans seem to have taken to me and sang my name. I feel like I’ve been here many years even though it’s only been a few months."

Despite constant fears in the media over Owen's ability to remain fit, the Reds' no.7 pointed out that he's only been unavailable once this season. That's a better injury record than the likes of Nemanja Vidic, Rio Ferdinand, Wayne Rooney and Ryan Giggs.

"United has a great structure behind the scenes," he explained. "The amount of staff that look after the players is incredible. If you want to do anything, be it weight sessions or yoga, it’s all catered for. You can go into any room and there’s a member of staff there ready to give you a programme that’s specific to you.

"I’ve always done extra bits and the type of player I’ve been – a quick player – means you’re always prone to muscle niggles. So I'll continue to do work off the pitch that hopefully limits the danger [of picking up injuries].

"Also, as you get older you learn more about your body. In the last Champions League game at home [against Wolfsburg] I came off before it was too late. If I’d carried on I might have done another sprint and pulled my groin and been out for a month."

Ferguson disagrees totally. "In my time here we have always had one of our star players finding he gets criticised when he has a little blip," he said.

"It seems to be part and parcel of being a player at Manchester United. We are all aware of that.

"No player likes to be criticised. We all like to be loved and want arms around our shoulders at times.

"But he will come out of it, there is no question about that.

"There is no discernible depreciation in his qualities. None at all."

Manchester - Manchester United ingin lebih cepat lolos ke babak 16 besar. Lebih cepat lolos akan lebih baik bagi MU karena dengan begitu mereka bisa sedikit menghemat tenaga. Guna memenuhi keinginan itu, halangan bernama CSKA Moskow harus dilalui.

MU merupakan salah satu dari enam tim yang berpeluang lolos ke fase knock out. Dengan rekor sempurna yakni sembilan poin dari tiga laga, Wayne Rooney dkk. bakal mengamankan tiket 16 besar bila tidak kalah di matchday keempat.

MU akan menghadapi CSKA Moskow di Old Trafford, Rabu (4/11/2009) dinihari WIB, lawan yang sudah ditaklukkan Setan Merah dengan skor 1-0 di matchday sebelumnya.

We're at home, our home form's been very good and hopefully will continue that way. They have a new coach so I imagine he'll want to win at Old Trafford both to improve his position and boost his reputation. It's a prestige game for them and so it'll be very difficult. We're very fortunate to have players like Brown and Evans to bring in – their performance on Saturday highlighted that. They're top defenders. Most people now recognise Darren Fletcher as a big-game player, but we've known for quite a while. He's getting an acceptance from people of how important he is to us. He's been missing in several big games recently and it's great to have the boy back.

Manchester United staged a stirring late rally at Old Trafford to claim a place in the last 16 of the Champions League after CSKA Moscow looked poised to end their 22-game unbeaten home record in the competition.

Sir Alex Ferguson's revamped United looked like they would have to wait to seal their place in the knockout phase when they trailed 3-1 with only six minutes remaining.

But with a grandstand finish that has become their trademark, Paul Scholes headed home six minutes from time and Antonio Valencia's deflected shot in injury time rescued the vital point.

CSKA looked well on course to inflict United's first Champions League defeat at Old Trafford since AC Milan won in February 2005 - but they reckoned without the powers of recovery and refusal to accept defeat buried deep within Ferguson's side.

The Russians took the lead after 25 minutes when Alan Dzagoev beat a static Edwin van der Sar from an angle, but Michael Owen pounced in the area to restore equality four minutes later.

CSKA were quickly back in front when Milos Krasic rounded Van der Sar to score, and when Vasili Berezutski headed home Dzagoev's free-kick two minutes after half-time, United looked likely to sample the rare taste of defeat on home territory.

But the introduction of Wayne Rooney, the day after the birth of his son Kai, lifted the mood inside Old Trafford and set the scene for United's late charge.

United boss Ferguson made public his admiration for Igor Akinfeev in his programme notes, and the CSKA keeper will have further impressed the Old Trafford hierarchy with a magnificent display that kept the Premier League champions at bay until the late double salvo from Scholes and Valencia broke their resistance.

To complete a miserable conclusion for CSKA, they had defender Deividas Semberas sent off after receiving a second yellow card.

United fielded a much-changed side, but Rooney was a surprise inclusion on the bench the day after the birth of his son.

Injury to Dimitar Berbatov gave Owen a chance to impress, and he was heavily involved in a first half that provided mixed fare for a subdued Old Trafford gallery.

Owen had his first chance after seven minutes when he was played in by Valencia, but he failed to make a firm connection and his effort rolled harmlessly wide.

Darren Fletcher was then inches away with Akinfeev beaten, before Owen saw a point-blank shot blocked by the CSKA keeper after the United striker had bundled his way through a packed penalty area.

Federico Macheda, also getting a rare opportunity as Ferguson gave his shadow squad some game time, almost made his mark with a long-range effort before CSKA shocked United by taking the lead after 25 minutes.

United defender Jonny Evans looked to have seen off the threat of Dzagoev when he drove him wide, but the 19 year-old Russian then unleashed an angled drive which flew high past a startled and motionless Van der Sar

Owen made amends for his earlier misses when he drew United level four minutes later, beating Akinfeev on the turn inside the area after Valencia's cross rebounded into his path off Nani.

As Old Trafford celebrated and assumed normal service had been resumed, CSKA were back in front within two minutes as Krasic stayed onside to latch on to Tomas Necid's pass and rounded Van der Sar to score on the turn.

Akinfeev then demonstrated his class with two more fine saves from Macheda and Scholes as United attempted to atone for their defensive lapses.

Sadly for Ferguson that vulnerability was in evidence again as CSKA added a third two minutes after the break.

Macheda lost his bearings, and Berezutski, allowing the CSKA defender to arrive unmarked at the far post and head beyond Van der Sar.

This was the signal for Rooney to warm up, much to Old Trafford's delight, but before he entered the action United were denied a clear penalty when Fletcher was felled by Aleksei Berezutski.

Portuguese official Olegario Benquerenca inexplicably ignored the claim and opted instead to show the Scot a yellow card for diving.

Rooney's energy had an instant impact on the tempo of United's game, and Akinfeev excelled again to block a powerful 25-yard free-kick from Scholes.

And as United laid siege to the CSKA goal, Akinfeev showed exactly why he is so highly-regarded throughout Europe by producing a string of top-class saves in the closing stages, making a defiant double stop from Owen and Rooney.

He then recovered superbly to defy Rooney once more after Macheda's header had bounced out off a post - but CSKA were wilting under the pressure and United pounced.

Scholes headed home Gary Neville's free-kick with six minutes left, and Valencia capped a trademark grandstand finish when his shot from the edge of the area was deflected off Georgy Shchennikov past Akinfeev.

MANCHESTER, KOMPAS.com - Manchester United (MU) tampil buruk di kandang sendiri saat menjamu CSKA Moskva dalam lanjutan Liga Champions Grup B, Selasa atau Rabu (4/11) dini hari WIBdi Stadion Old Trafford. MU sempat tertinggal 1-3 dan harus menyamakan kedudukan berkat gol bunuh diri Georgy Shennikov .

Menjamu CSKA Moskva, bukan perkara yang mudah bagi Manchester United. Pasalnya, "The Horses", julukan Moskwa" adalah lawan yang cukup alot. "Setan Merah" berhasil menundukkan tuan rumah berkat gol yang diciptakan Antonio Valencia pada menit ke-86.

Pada awal babak pertama, Moskwa langsung tampil menekan. Gawang Edwin Van der Sar hampir kebobolan dengan dua ancaman yang dilepaskan pasukan Leonid Slutsky. Teror dilepaskan Alan Dzagiev dan Deividas Semberas pada menit pertama dan kedua. Beruntung gawang Van der Sar masih aman karena bola hanya melebar.

Dua ancaman tersebut melecut emosi Valencia dkk. Mereka langsung melancarkan agresi dengan cepat guna merusak pertahanan lawan. Pada menit kesepuluh, Owen berhasil merangsek masuk ke jantung pertahanan Moskwa dan langsung melepaskan tendangan keras. Hasil imbang di Old Trafford, Rabu (4/11/2009), telah membuat MU lolos ke babak 16 besar Liga Champions. Meski demikian Ferguson mengaku tidak senang dengan keputusan wasit Olegario Benquerenca.

MANCHESTER United manager Sir Alex Ferguson hailed his side's battling qualities after the 3-3 draw with CSKA Moscow - but blasted referee Olegario Benquerenca for not awarding his side a penalty in the Champions League Group B match at Old Trafford.

Van Der Sar: Not his best night for sure... Beat 2 times in near post...

Neville: Great match by him... excellent crosses down the right, his overlap done so much damage for CSKA wing..

Brown & Evans: Not best perfrmance by them.. Shaky defence.. bad covering, bad judging, bad marking.. everything seems not right for them last night.

Fabio: Being played by Krasic on the left... Always chasing Krasic tail...

Fetcher: Should have a penalty... Its a bad decision.. not his best night, but gives alot of help for Scholsey.

Scholes: Decent long pass, decent goal... vital in midfield.. but, too slow for the russians...

Nani: once again failed to impress me (maybe others too)... delivery is poor, too slow, but, make a lucky pass to Owen's goal...

Sir Alex Ferguson described the decision to book Manchester United midfielder Darren Fletcher for diving as 'unbelievable'.

Fletcher was penalised by the referee early in the second half just moments after CSKA Moscow had taken a 3-1 lead.

The Scotland international appeared to be tripped in the penalty area by Vasili Berezutsky, only to be cautioned for diving.

Ferguson told Sky Sports: "I can't believe it, I just can't believe that one.

"It's one of the worst I've seen in my lifetime. Unbelievable."

Meanwhile, Ferguson praised the intensity of United's performance after the 3-3 draw at home to CSKA secured a place in the last 16 of the Champions League.

CSKA were on the brink of a shock win at Old Trafford when the Russian side held a 3-1 lead heading into the final 10 minutes.

But Paul Scholes' header gave United a lifeline and Antonio Valencia's injury-time shot deflected in off Georgy Schennikov to earn the point needed to guarantee progression from Group B.

Ferguson was disappointed to see his team concede three goals at home, but was happy with the response from his players in the latter stages.

"The chances we made you have to say their keeper has made some fantastic saves," Ferguson said.

"We lost three goals at home and you don't like that. It was a surprise the third one after half-time and that gave them something to hold on to.

Manchester - Karena sempat tak ikut latihan dan kurang tidur, Alex Ferguson berencana tak memainkan Wayne Rooney. Tapi perjudiannya dengan tetap menurunkan sang striker berbuah manis lantaran MU tak jadi kalah.

Tak ada gol dibuat Wayne Rooney saat Manchester dengan susah payah menahan CSKA Moscow 3-3. Namun striker yang baru jadi ayah itu dianggap jadi pahlawan 'Setan Merah' yang sesungguhnya.

Di Old Trafford, Rabu (4/11/2009) dinihari WIB, MU sempat tertinggal 1-3. Tuan rumah baru memastikan dapat satu poin setelah Paul Scholes dan Antonio Valencia bikin gol di masa injury time yang menyamakan kedudukan menjadi 3-3.

Keberhasilan MU mengejar defisit dua gol tersebut tak lepas dari keputusan Fergie menarik Nani dan menggantinya dengan Rooney di menit 58. Striker 24 tahun itu kemudian menjadi motor serangan MU dan sukses memporak-porandakan pertahanan CSKA.

Diakui Fergie, keputusan memasukkan Rooney menjadi sebuah perjuadian buatnya. Soalnya di awal laga dia sama sekali tak berniat menurunkan pesepakbola yang baru beberapa hari menjadi ayah itu mengingat dia sempat mengajukan izin tak ikut latihan dan mengaku kurang tidur.

"Jujur saja, dia tak mendapat cukup tidur. Sebelumnya saya berencana membiarkan dia tetap di bangku cadangan. Dia adalah pemain yang yang memberi rasa aman buat kami, dan dalam kondisi kami membutuhkannya dia akan berada di sana," ungkap Fergie seperti diberitakan TheSun.

Sanjungan pada Rooney juga datang dari Darren Fletcher. Dalam posisi tertinggal 3-1, masuknya mantan pemain Everton itu dianggap Fletcher mampu meningkatkan lagi semangat skuad 'Setan Merah'.

"(Semangat) itu didongkrak oleh fans dan dia (Rooney). Jelas sekali kalau dia adalah pemain top dan saat dia masuk lapangan, dia sepertinya bisa membantu semua tim yang," timpal gelandang Skotlandia itu di Goal.

Pelatih CSKA, Leonid Slutski, juga mengakui kalau Rooney adalah penyebab kegagalan timnya memetik kemenangan bersejarah di Old Trafford. Padahal jika berhasil mempertahankan keunggulan, raksasa Rusia itu akan mematahkan rekor tak terkalahkan MU di Old Trafford yang sudah bertahan sejak Februari 2005.

"Dia membuat perbedaan saat masuk ke lapangan. MU terlihat moderat sebelumnya, tapi Rooney adalah salah satu pemain terbaik di dunia - dan dia menunjukkan skill dan agresivitas yang sangat tinggi," sahut Slutski.

anyway, permainan di babak pertama secara ofensif cukup efektif.. tapi sayang serangan balik para pemain Rusia terkoordinasi dengan sangat baik sampe2 barisan bek United keteteran... seperti biasa, catatan mengecewakan lagi2 diberikan oleh Nani... pergerakannya gak efektif.. skill-nya juga dengan gampang dimentahkan sama bek2 lawan... Valencia sebenarnya punya andil positif dalam permainan.. tapi andai aja dia mau melatih kaki kirinya, ancaman yang bisa dia tebar buat lawan akan lebih banyak.. dan effort-nya gak akan gampang dimatikan....

Gazza superb... staminanya kemarin mungkin sedang puncaknya... mengingatkan kita ke masa2 mudanya.... Fletch belum kembali ke form optimalnya, tapi kontribusinya selalu maksimal... Opa SAF seperti biasa, kembali menunjukkan pengambilan keputusan kelas tinggi (walau sebenarnya sangat obvious) dengan memasukkan Rooney dan Evra... dan kemudian Obertan... permainan United mulai kembali fokus dan semakin bertenaga... kreativitas juga semakin lancar keluar.... walhasil, sebuah penampilan klasik--kembali dari ketertinggalan--kembali dipertontonkan buat kita...

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson wants UEFA to consider taking retrospective action on bookings as well as red cards in Champions League matches.

Ferguson was incensed that Darren Fletcher was booked for diving by Portuguese referee Olegario Benquerenca instead of a penalty being awarded in the thrilling 3-3 draw against CSKA Moscow.

Antonio Valencia scored the equaliser in stoppage time at Old Trafford to secure United's place in the last 16.

'I think his energy and confidence was very high. He makes an impact. He is such a good player and is always capable of scoring. He was a wee bit unlucky.'

Alan Dzagoev opened the scoring for the visitors only for Michael Owen to pull United level with his fifth goal of the season.

Ferguson wants freedom to appeal

Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson believes clubs should be free to appeal against European bookings.

Darren Fletcher appeared to be tripped in the area during the 3-3 draw with CSKA Moscow but was instead cautioned by referee Olegario Benquerenca.

"I can't believe the decision. It's one of the worst I've seen," said Ferguson.

"You can't appeal a yellow card - it is crucial because to miss an important game because of that is unfair. They should look at that but they won't."

At present, Uefa follows a strict policy with appeals only allowed on the grounds of mistaken identity.

United were denied an appeal last season when Fletcher was forced to miss the final against Barcelona after being sent-off for a professional foul in the semi-final against Arsenal despite playing the ball.

However, his annoyance at the referee aside, Ferguson was delighted with how his side fought back from 3-1 down to secure qualification to the knockout stages.

"I thought the intensity of our play, and particularly in the last 25 minutes, was terrific," he said.

United recovered after goals from Alan Dzagoev, Milos Krasic and Vasili Berezutski had given the visitors an unlikely lead.

Michael Owen had levelled for United at 1-1 while a Paul Scholes header and Antonio Valencia's deflected shot off Georgy Shchennikov rescued a point and sealed their place in the knockout stages of the competition.

United were lacklustre throughout and defended poorly but still created enough chances to win the game.

A combination of bad finishing, largely from Owen, and fantastic goalkeeping from Igor Akinfeev kept them at bay.

And despite their poor defending Ferguson felt the point his side earned was justified.

"We should have been four up before they even had a strike on goal," said Ferguson.

"We made a lot of chances and we deserved the point because we kept on going.

"Their goalkeeper made some fantastic saves but we lost three goals at home and you don't like that.

"We played very open tonight and it was difficult for Paul Scholes and Darren Fletcher in midfield as they played one up front.

"But with the players I had available it was the right team to pick. I just can't believe how many chances we did create and we kept going until the end."

And Ferguson praised the contribution of Wayne Rooney, who came off the bench just hours after arriving home with baby Kai Wayne.

"Wayne hadn't had much sleep. I would have preferred to leave him on the bench," added Ferguson.

"I think his energy and confidence was very high. He makes an impact. He is such a good player and is always capable of scoring. He was a wee bit unlucky."

Meanwhile, United's Brazilian defender Fabio da Silva has had a yellow card he picked up in the Carling Cup tie at Barnsley transferred to his brother Rafael.

Fabio was booked for a foul on Jamal Campbell-Ryce at Oakwell last week, but the FA agreed it was a case of mistaken identity.
