Full name Football Club United of Manchester
Nickname(s) FCUM, Red Rebels
Founded 2005
Ground Gigg Lane, Bury
(Capacity: 11,840)
Chairman Alan Hargrave
Manager Karl Marginson
League Northern Premier League Premier Division

Mereka disebut "The Red Rebels".

Organisation

FC United is an Industrial and Provident Society. Membership is obtained by paying an annual fee of £10 to the club (£3 for children), but each member receives only one share in the club and is entitled to a single vote at meetings, regardless of the amount donated.
The club has an elected board of eleven members.
The club has two full-time employee positions: Andy Walsh as chief executive and Lindsey Robertson. Andy Walsh was heavily involved in the club's formation.
The club's manifesto includes the following core principles:
1. The Board will be democratically elected by its members.
2. Decisions taken by the membership will be decided on a one member, one vote basis.
3. The club will develop strong links with the local community and strive to be accessible to all, discriminating against none.
4. The club will endeavour to make admission prices as affordable as possible, to as wide a constituency as possible.
5. The club will encourage young, local participation - playing and supporting - whenever possible.
6. The Board will strive wherever possible to avoid outright commercialism.
7. The club will remain a non-profit organisation.
8. The club accepts sponsorship but does not allow sponsors' logos to be displayed on the team's shirts. The club's main sponsor in its inaugural 2005-06 season was the Bhopal Medical Appeal and in season 2006-07 it was the Williams BMW Group.

Future aspirations

In November 2006 at the club's Annual General Meeting, the club outlined bold aspirations for the forthcoming six years including:
- winning promotion in three successive seasons to take them to Conference North by 2009. (The goal of three successive promotions was completed, however due to league restructuring, F.C. United have to be promoted one more time to reach Conference North.)
- reaching an average of 5,000 supporters per home game by 2009.
building their own 7,000 - 10,000 capacity stadium, as central to Greater Manchester as possible, by 2012.
- developing their own training facilities by 2009.
- starting a women's team for the 2007-08 season. (This has not happened yet).

Results

Winning promotion in three successive seasons was accomplished on 3 May 2008, and they currently compete in the Northern Premier League this season. One further promotion would have put the team in Conference North by 2009-10, exactly as planned in November 2006; however, United of Manchester ended in 6th place, missing the playoffs.

:hajar2:

"They have a great idea, I hope they will become a great club and win the European Cup in 50 year's time"
- Eric Cantona -

sejarah

Long Road to Glory

Season 2005-2006

Luaaaarrr biasa, 3 tahun berturut-turut mendapat promosi.

Season 2008-2009

I Believe!!!!

Rebels plan home fit for their heroes
Source: Manchester Evening News

Sam Williams

January 16, 2010
FC United have submitted proposals for their own 4,000-capacity stadium to Manchester council.

Although a final location for the project is yet to be confirmed, the club say they are hoping to complete the planning process before the end of the season.

"We've been working on the business plan for a few months and had meetings with the council before Christmas to talk about our draft proposals," said general manager Andy Walsh.

"The final draft has now been sent in, and we hope to make an announcement about when work will begin in the next few months." Walsh estimates that the stadium will cost around £3-4m to build, and says that funding for the project will come from several sources.

"We'll be using our own resources as well as some grant funding to help us.

"Obviously, it's not the best time financially to be asking for funding, but we're in discussions at the moment."

FC are also keen to ensure that the stadium will be available for other uses as well being as their home ground.

"This is not just for FC United and it's important that the ground is used as a community facility," said Walsh.

"We will consult with local residents, as well as all of our club members, about things such as the name of the ground because we want their input." The Rebels currently play their home fixtures at Bury's Gigg Lane, and have also used Stainton Park in Radcliffe and Altrincham's Moss Lane ground since their formation in 2005.

However, it now appears that they will have their own place to call home in the near future - news that will be warmly received by fans as the club aim to continue climbing the non-league ladder towards the Football League.

The club's determination to own their own ground has received the backing of Sir Richard Leese, leader of the city council, and Walsh believes his support could be crucial.

"He says he wants FC United to stay within the city boundaries, which is good, so now it's down to us," said an optimistic Walsh.

"There's still work to be done before the final plan goes before the councillors, but we're as confident as we can be about it at this stage."

bener banget...

Ky kmrn semua blg ttg "green and gold", toh tidak semua supporter setuju...

FC United homage to history as they prepare for future at Newton Heath

The club, formed in protest at the Glazers' leveraged buy-out of Manchester United, are to build their own ground

While Manchester United supporters were deliriously celebrating Paul Scholes's vintage winner at Eastlands on Saturday some 500 followers of FC United, the club formed in 2005 by fans opposed to the Glazer family's takeover, were singing with customary passion throughout their own fixture – a 4-1 defeat at Boston United.

Such have been the lives of contrasts since the Glazers arrived and loaded United with all that debt, now standing at more than £700m. "Big" United have nevertheless won three Premier League titles and the European Cup, while FC United have grafted through three promotions in the northern non‑leagues, to this challenging season in the Unibond Premier Division.

At Old Trafford, the Manchester United Supporters Trust's (MUST) remarkable green and gold campaign has flowered, an expression of yearning for the founding values of Newton Heath, the original United club, rather than the financial speculation of the Glazers. Now FC United have revealed that they too are planning their own homage to that history, announcing an agreement with Manchester City Council to lease land for a new 5,000 capacity stadium – in Newton Heath.

The site, the Ten Acres Sports Complex, in need of refurbishment in the deprived east Manchester district, is close to where Newton Heath, formed by working men on the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway in 1878, played their early, pre-United football in green and gold. Close by, on the other side of the former brickworks, is a small housing estate, its streets named after the Busby Babes who died in the 1958 Munich air crash, including Roger Byrne Close, Duncan Edwards Court, Eddie Colman Close.

"The site is close to Manchester city centre, which is vital to us," explains Andy Walsh, FC United's general manager, "but the historic and emotional tie is important, too. FC United is a different, alternative club for United fans, and we want to be true to the original Newton Heath heritage, part of the community and accessible to the ordinary working people of Manchester."

For a supporter-owned club whose banners at the current home ground, Bury's Gigg Lane, proclaim "punk football", the stadium plans have been meticulously professional. Working with lawyers, planners and accountants, many giving their time for free, FC have produced proposals for a stadium costing £3.5m, a project which will refurbish the sports centre and provide facilities for extensive use by residents living around the ground. The council has agreed a grant in principle, and FC have also applied for funding from the Football Foundation. They aim to raise the rest by issuing community shares to supporters, which will not provide a financial return and be non-voting, so as not to disturb the club's cherished one-member-one-vote democracy.

"The prospectus is being finalised at the moment," says Walsh, the former firebrand opponent of United's plc status, and the Glazer takeover, trying not to smile at his authorship of a share issue. FC United are growing up, developing a club embodying the values the fans felt were being sucked away at Old Trafford, keeping tickets affordable for the average 2,000 regulars, and becoming deeply engaged in community work. The stadium plan will be accompanied with an "asset lock", a legal agreement that the ground will not be separated from the club in the future and sold off.

A reminder of how important such protection is, and the roots of the movement for supporter ownership, arrived last week when Wrexham's former chairman, Mark Guterman, was disqualified from acting as a company director for seven years. For the purpose of agreeing to the disqualification, Guterman did not dispute that in 2002 he "exploited" Wrexham's "property assets" – the club's tenancy at the Racecourse Ground.

The freehold was transferred to a company owned by Guterman's partner, Alex Hamilton, – who is contesting the disqualification proceedings – and the club's lease changed to allow them to be evicted on 12 months' notice. Guterman did not dispute that the "the primary purpose" of the scheme was "for my own personal benefit and that of my business associate, rather than for the benefit of the [club]".

The modern idea for supporter-owned clubs, in fact a reclaiming of most clubs' original status, was born at the Butchers Arms in Northampton in 1992 when Brian Lomax, a Liberal party member and Town fan, was bemoaning the running of the club. Lomax's notion, that supporters should own shares and have a say in the club, led to him and fellow fans forming a democratic trust. That idea impressed the Labour Government's Football Task Force, and led to the establishment in 2000 of Supporters Direct, with Lomax as the managing director, to help fans establish trusts more widely.

They have now been formed at more than 150 clubs in England, Wales and Scotland, and this season, due largely to MUST's green and gold campaign, and this season supporter ownership has become an ideal understood by the mainstream mass of fans. The facts are known more widely than ever before; the football public are aware that Barcelona and Bayern Munich are owned, respectively, by 100% and more than 50% of their supporters. Remarkably, the Labour and Conservative parties' election manifestos both carry plans to extend supporter ownership in Britain.

The efforts being finalised by the "Red Knights" to mount a bid to buy United from the Glazers represent the journey's most significant outpost yet – a selection of multimillionaires preparing to agree that a football club is not for financial exploitation, but should be owned without delivering a large return, with supporters enabled to buy a growing stake. Led by the Goldman Sachs chief economist Jim O'Neill, the Red Knights are understood to be ensuring all the investors are committed to that ethos, before they sign up.

Yet the Red Knights' plans also illustrate the basic stumbling block supporters trusts have met in seeking to establish themselves in the past decade: access to cash. Several have heroically rescued much smaller clubs, including York City and Chesterfield, out of catastrophe, then been forced by financial pressures to hand them over to businessmen. Exeter City are the only Football League club currently still wholly owned by their fans, while significant stakes are held at Lincoln City and Swansea. The handing over of Notts County by its trust to the mirage of Munto Finance stands, though, as an object lesson of what not to do.

If the political parties are genuine about extending fan ownership and representation in clubs valued at many millions, they will have to flesh out detail of how, practically, it can be done. In the age of billionaire owners, ordinary fans, however committed to the mutual ideal, have struggled to find resources.

In the meantime FC United are showing what can be achieved when starting from the beginning, with loyalty, defiance, and a backbone of work.

Life at FC United: 'Forget Cantona, my heroes are now here'

Founded by fans alienated at Old Trafford, the non-league club are enjoying rapid progress on and off the pitch and on Friday make their debut in the first round of the FA Cup

A swirling wind is driving the rain across the training pitch, but it would be impossible to dampen the enthusiasm of the players, officials and supporters of FC United of Manchester. The club formed by Manchester United fans disillusioned with the rampant commercialism of the Glazer era have come a long way in five years and will enjoy their biggest moment yet when they travel to Rochdale on Friday night in the first round of the FA Cup.

Vinny Thompson, who went to his first match at Old Trafford 48 years ago and followed the Reds around the world, has been back only once since 2005 but says that supporting FC United has rekindled his love of the game.

"I miss the guys I used to stand on the terraces with for so many years, but that's the only thing," Thompson says as we watch Monday's training at Nicholls Campus in Ardwick.

"Supporting FC United, connecting with my fellow fans, has made me feel part of something again. You pay a sensible price to watch matches, you stand on the terraces, you sing and nobody is telling you where you have to sit and what you can and can't do. You meet so many wonderful people in non-league football. My heroes used to be people like Law, Charlton and Cantona, but now my heroes are the people who do so much for their clubs at this level."

After three promotions, FC United have reached the Premier Division of the Evo-Stik (formerly Northern Premier) League, which means they are theoretically just two steps away from the Football League. That is quite an achievement for a club without a home. Owned by their supporters, 300 of whom work for the club voluntarily, FC United play at Bury, train at Manchester College and hire facilities for the ever-increasing amount of work they do in the community.

That should change soon. The club are raising £3.5m to build their own stadium at Newton Heath, less than a mile from where Manchester United first played 132 years ago, as Newton Heath LYR. The location is a coincidence, but FC United believe they can recapture the spirit of the 19th-century pioneers by embedding their club in the local community.

The site at Ten Acres Lane is owned by Manchester City Council, who will offer a long-term lease on a peppercorn rent, as well as some financial support. There are plans for an artificial training pitch, five-a-side pitches, a sports hall and multi-purpose function rooms, which will all be made available for community use, as well as the main 5,000-capacity stadium. FC United consistently attract crowds of 2,000-plus – they have more than 2,000 members, who pay an annual fee of £12 – and have already sold their initial allocation of 3,200 tickets for Friday's match.

Having their own home should transform the club's finances. "We're effectively set up as a co-operative and the money we generate should be coming back into the club, but match days cost us about £5,000," Adam Brown, one of the club's founding board members, says. "We don't get the second spend in terms of bars and food outlets, or the benefit of stadium facilities during the week."

The biggest portion of the funding for the new stadium will come from an innovative "community shares" scheme, which it is hoped will raise £1.5m. The shares will not have any voting rights, meaning that FC United's one-member-one-vote founding principle is preserved, and subscribers will have to commit their money (up to a maximum of £20,000) for at least three years. Thereafter they can withdraw it only 10 per cent at a time, while an "asset lock" means the stadium can never be sold for profit and must always be used for community benefit.

FC United hope to pay interest at up to 2 per cent above bank base rate and expect the share offer to be approved as an Enterprise Investment Scheme, which would enable subscribers to claim a 20 per cent tax break. It is hoped that the scheme will appeal to supporters, football fans generally and the co-operative movement at large.

"The scheme could completely change football finances, all the way up to League One level," Andy Walsh, FC United's general manager, says. "If we manage to raise £1.5m from a fanbase of around 2,000, just think what clubs with bigger support might achieve. There's no reason why they can't raise enough money to own and run their clubs rather than forever having to look for wealthy owners."

It was the latest band of money men at Old Trafford that finally drove away the likes of Walsh. Becoming a plc, raising ticket prices, spending millions on players' wages and agents' fees, and constantly switching kick-off times for the benefit of television had tested the loyalty of fans for years, but the Glazers' takeover, loading the club with debt, proved the final straw for some.

"I was born a Manchester United fan and I'll die a Manchester United fan," Walsh says. "My father took me to my first game when I was five and I took my own children at the same age. Deciding to withdraw my season ticket application was one of the most painful decisions of my life, but I just couldn't afford to take my family to matches. The Glazers have shown they're not interested in fans like us. All they're interested in is people with big wallets."

Wayne Rooney's recent pay rise only reinforced Walsh's view that he made the right decision. "Rooney's contract negotiations were described by some people as a score draw between player and club, but the losers were the fans, because they're the ones who'll be picking up the tab," Walsh says. "The extra money to pay for Rooney's new contract will come out of their pockets, not the Glazers'."

Nevertheless, FC United's Old Trafford heritage, which is reflected in the club colours, is strong. Several players are Manchester United fans, as is Karl Marginson, who has been manager from the start and now works full-time for the club, having given up his job as a fruit-and-veg delivery man. Scott McManus, a defender, and Roy Soule, the assistant manager, were United youth team players. Whisper it quietly, but David Chadwick, the captain, is a Manchester City fan.

Playing for FC United involves certain obligations. Although they do not go as far as the old Corinthian Casuals club, who used to show the door to players who were sent off, FCUM's code of conduct says players should "avoid all forms of gamesmanship and time-wasting", "not use inappropriate language", "avoid violence and rough play" and "accept the decision of the match official without protest".

The code also calls on supporters to "show due respect to match officials" and "applaud the opposition as well as your own team". The club have a high proportion of young and female supporters and the fans' sense of fun and enjoyment is reflected in their match-day banners, such as one that reads "Pies not Prawns".

As evidence of their opposition to commercialism, it is a club rule that the players' shirts are not sponsored. "It means we lose out on some revenue, but I think we gain a lot through the symbolic statement we're making," Brown says.

The club's website also bemoans "changing kick-off times for the benefit of television" and cynics might question FC United's willingness to go along with switching this weekend's fixture to Friday night at the request of ESPN, which will benefit both clubs to the tune of £67,500.

"It wasn't an easy decision, but our priority at the moment is to raise the money to build our own ground," Brown says. "Going on TV without shirt sponsorship and being able to talk about the fan ownership gets the message across to a wider audience. We also had to recognise that if we turned it down we would be depriving Rochdale as well. It's a question of balance."

FA CUP FIRST ROUND
The rise of the Red Rebels
soccernet, Richard Jolly -November 3, 2010

http://i203.photobucket.com/albums/aa130/bar_1129/2009_2010/FCUM.jpg
FC United's annual wage bill is around £100,000, compared to Manchester United's £131.7 million

Both original and derivative, both protest movement and progressive force, a five-year-old club makes its debut in the FA Cup first round. Followers of the Northern Premier League Premier Division may recognise the players, but the team's name is, in the words if not their order, altogether more familiar: FC United of Manchester.

The offspring of, and antidote to, Manchester United, FC United is, in the words of its general manager, Andy Walsh, "a continuing phenomenon." It is an example of people power, flying a flag of idealism. Founded by an anti-Glazer group who have turned ambitious plans into reality, FC United are attempting to demonstrate there is another way of running a football club.

Their opponents on Friday are Rochdale, but they exist because of, and in contrast to, Manchester United's American owners. Walsh, one of the founders, explained: "A number of us were involved in the Red Issue fanzine at Manchester United and just after the Glazers had announced they had secured the club we discussed the possibility of FC United being formed. It went from there. We decided to hold a meeting to see if there was the support for the idea. That was done in June 2005 and we elected a board of 11.

"We said that if there were 1,000 people supporting the idea it deserved further consideration. We were overwhelmed. Over 3,000 people sent us financial donations to get the club up and running and secure funding for whatever league we were in and we raised about £180,000 in a six-week period."

Progress on the field was similarly swift. Their first three seasons all ended in promotion, taking the newly-formed club from the North West Counties League Second Division to its current home, the Northern Premier League Premier Division. To put it into the context of the league ladder, they began as a tenth-tier team and are now in the seventh flight. Rochdale, consolidating admirably in League One, are four divisions higher. It is why, though the splinter group may be two games from a meeting with their former allies of Manchester United, Walsh dismisses the notion as "not fanciful, outlandish".

FC United have succeeded in luring disaffected fans from Old Trafford. Average attendances in their debut season exceeded 3,000 and they have sold their full allocation of 3,200 tickets for the match at Spotland.

As Rob Nugent, a player turned director, said: "For the level we play at, it is phenomenal. In the first season, for our last game when we had won the league and the cup, and we had 6,023 [fans]." It is a level of support that is the envy of clubs at a higher level, aided by a policy of affordability.

"We currently have over 1,000 season ticket holders," Walsh added. "Last year we offered people the right to pay what they could afford, from a floor price of £90. The average price they paid was around £160. We did a similar scheme this year and it was around £160 again." It is all the more remarkable because, before supporters were invited to set their own price, many were paying £140. The new economic model appears more profitable as well as more equitable.

The notion of involving the fans extends beyond that. There is a banner at Old Trafford proclaiming it part of the "People's Republik of Mancunia". FC United can make a legitimate claim to that status. The board is elected and each of the club's 2,000-plus members is an equal co-owner. One member, one vote is, Walsh argues, working very well.

"People have respect for the democratic process," he explained. "It's inevitable that votes will not be unanimous. There is a respect for the majority decision." The public participation continues in the day-to-day existence of the club.

"It couldn't run without the level of voluntary support we have," Walsh said. "Around 300 people volunteer during the week. It has empowered people, given them the opportunity to build a club for themselves. Give supporters their head and they will contribute. We are building an alternative for people."

They hope, too, to build a ground. Home games are staged at Bury's Gigg Lane ground which is both expensive, costing £100,000 a year, and too far from the centre of Manchester. Planning permission has been submitted for a 5,000-capacity, £3.5 million stadium which, in a fortunate coincidence, will be in Newton Heath, the suburb that doubled up as Manchester United's first home and name.

http://i203.photobucket.com/albums/aa130/bar_1129/2009_2010/FCUM2.jpg
Karl Marginson is the man tasked with leading FC United as they embark on their maiden FA Cup campaign

The funds from the FA Cup run, including a £67,500 fee for television rights for the Rochdale game, will help. FC United are well on the way to raising an initial £500,000, which they hope to augment with £1.5 million in grants that co-operatives and mutuals are eligible for and a further £1.5 million in a Community Share scheme. "It is a unique opportunity for football, because if we can raise funds this way, so can other clubs," said Walsh.

It is very different from the world of leveraged buyouts, escalating ticket prices and £200,000-a-week salaries at the other United. In an attempt to find a fairer, more inclusive, supporter-friendly way, however, they remain the reference point, the illustration of how not to act.

"FC United is part of the anti-Glazer protest," Walsh concluded. "We are integral to that. Our intention is to show that fans will not be messed around. As time passes, the decision of fans to boycott Manchester United to get rid of the Glazers is gaining ground and I don't think it would have gained so much ground without FC United.

"There are still thousands who hold their noses as they pass through the turnstiles at Old Trafford. The Glazers are a cancer on Manchester United and a cancer on the English game and as yet no one has found a cure for cancer."

FC United wins approval for new ground

FC United of Manchester, the Red Rebel club set up in the wake of the 2005 Glazer takeover at Manchester United, has won council approval for a new stadium at Ten Acres Lane, Newton Heath. The 5,000-seat ground will cost around £3.5 million, with supporters currently raising money through an innovative Community Share scheme.

Manchester council approved the club’s business plan this week and will now start a period of consultation with the local community, with a planning meeting set for 25 November.

Supporters hope to raise around one third of the capital through the share scheme, while grants and other funding with provide additional money. The stadium, situated in Newton Heath the birthplace of Manchester United, will provide much needed revenue for the Rebels, which currently pays Bury FC around £5,000 a game to rent Gigg Lane for home fixtures.

“The significance of this location is historical while it also showcases a new model of facility development, based on football supporter ownership and community involvement,” general manager Andy Walsh told the Press Association.

The new stadium will also contain facilities for year-round community use in one of the most deprived areas of Manchester.

FC United Dream Kept Alive
United-Latest

FC United Of Manchester kept their FA Cup dream alive, as Nicky Platt and goalkeeper Sam Ashton were the heros on Saturday as the side pulled-off a 1-1 draw against Brighton & Hove Albion. The 2nd Round tie proved a tough test, but the Red Rebels are still on course...
FC United Of Manchester, set-up in protest of The Glazer Family take-over of Manchester United, remain on course to break into the 3rd Round of The FA Cup as they forced a late replay on Saturday, holding Brighton & Hove Albion to a 1-1 draw. The Red Rebels can still theoretically meet Man United in the 3rd Round.

Ben Deegan cued for Nicky Platt inside the box to put FC United ahead before half time. The Rebels couldn't believe their luck, as they lead until Mauricio Taricco put Gus Poyet's men back in contention in the 83rd minute at Gigg Lane.

United looked as if they were going to fall apart, as Scott McManus had been sent-off before the equaliser - and then came a last minute penalty for Brighton to win the game. However, The Reds' goalkeeper Sam Ashton produced a heroic save to hand United a replay...

FC United make it four in a row with 4-1 Hucknall victory

FC United win again
By Chris, January 23 2011 TheFootballNetwork

FC United of Manchester claimed a thumping 4-1 win over Hucknall Town in front of 1,883 supporters at Gigg Lane. Goals from Mike Norton, Jerome Wright, Matthew Wolfenden and Jake Cottrell were enough to give the Red Rebels maximum points.

Karl Marginson's men bagged a fourth successive win in style.

After a disappointing start to the season, Little United sit only nine points off the play-off pack and have games-in-hand over a number of their opponents.

The Rebels built on wins over Ashton United, Bradford Park Avenue and Retford United with Saturday's win.

Norton latched onto Wright's pass after five minutes to break the deadlock, before the visitors levelled through Joe Pheasant’s header.

Wright's chip put United back ahead before the break as he continued his fine run of goalscoring form. Wolfenden's neat finish and Cottrell's long-range effort sealed the points after half-time.

Marginson's side return to action on Tuesday evening at Kendal Town. This win took the Gigg Lane outfit up to 13th in the table and United have as many as six games in hand over some clubs.

Full Time – FC United of Manchester 4-1 Hucknall Town
Attendance – 1,883

2. apakah mereka masih mencintai Manchester United

( Btw , Untung namanya bukan Soccer Club United of Manchester ya :hammer: )

1. Masih , coz sebagian pendukung FCUM adl anggota Red Army .

Mungkin , Ini yg namanya "Cinta Lama Bersemi Kembali" ... :P

Gara2 siapa ? Of course , those Stupid Yanks ...

3. Mendukung 100 % seperti zaman pra akuisisi Glazers kan ? Bisa ya , dan bisa tidak . Kemungkinannya 50-50 . Yg jelas , mereka gak bakal berganti kostum mjd "Biru Langit" dan ikut dalam euforia kedatangan "Bintang2 Sepakbola yg mata duitan" ke City of Manchester Stadium ... :embarrassment:

Offside!: Moston residents in bid to block FC United stadium bid

Hundreds of people have launched a campaign to block a bid to use playing fields for a new stadium for rebel football club FC United of Manchester.

The club – formed in protest at the Glazer family’s ownership of Manchester United – want to build a 5,000 capacity stadium on the council-owned Ronald Johnson playing fields, close to St Mary’s Road and Lightbowne Road in New Moston.

But people living close to the site – currently home to a junior football team – have vowed to fight the plans. Nearly 1,000 have signed a petition against the proposals, which they are to take to the town hall.

FC United, who have played at Bury's Gigg Lane ground since being formed in 2005, want to move to Manchester. Joanne Hilton, who lives on St Mary’s Road, said: "The community does not want this. It’s our local field and it has always been for us.

"There isn’t much greenery in Moston and we don’t want a stadium here.

"It has nothing to do with football. This field was gifted to the public and nothing was ever meant to be built here. There will be crowds, cars and there will be alcohol and the problems that causes."

The plans are expected to go before the council for approval in July.Moston Juniors currently hold a lease at the site until 2032 and pay £1,000 rent a year.

A spokesman for Moston Juniors said they had held positive meetings with FC United and the council.

Andy Walsh, general manager of FC United, who play in English football's seventh tier, said: "Football matches would be played there 25 to 30 days a year.

"We have always dealt with things in an open and honest way.

"The people of Moston Juniors and Moston are the very people whose views we have to take into account. This is not just about football, it's about creating a community facility and that is all part of the consultation over the coming weeks."

Moston councillor Paul Murphy said that the plans were far from a done deal.

He said: "There is a covenant on the land and the Charity Commission need to be satisfied this can happen. And if Moston Juniors are not happy with the plans, this is not a goer."

Eamonn O'Rourke, from the council, said: "We asked FC United to carry out a full public consultation and this is now under way. All representations will be taken into consideration before any final decision is made."
