It’s around this time every season that the media begin to gush over Arsenal’s youngsters. A string of good performances in the Carling Cup and suddenly they are world beaters but as good as Arsenal’s youngsters are, Man United’s are not too shabby either.

With Kiko Macheda, Danny Welbeck and Brazilian twins Rafael and Fabio all in the first team picture, a new crop of youngsters are just waiting to make the jump from the reserves to the first team.

There is an abundance of talent in United’s lower ranks with Ritchie De Laet performing when called upon first team duty, Tom Cleverley impressing whilst on loan at Watford and the high profile signings of talented young players like Paul Pogba from Le Harve and Davide Petrucci from Roma.

Yet probably one of the most impressive is one you may not heard of, Magnus Eikrem.

The Norwegian is a product of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s soccer school and is regarded as one of Norway’s most promising talents along with United team mate Josh King.

From the soccer school, the diabetic Eikrem was quickly snapped up by Solskjaer’s old team FK Molde after a spell there in the youth academy he joined United in 2006 at the behest of Solskjaer.

He carried on where he left off at Molde flourished in the academy. In 2008/2009 moved to the reserves and made the transition look easy as he notched up 20 appearances and 2 goals, one of which being a stunning free kick against Middlesbrough.

Afterwards Solskjaer told MUTV, “We know Magnus is a talented player. I’ve known him since he was 12 years of age and of course I’m very, very pleased for him when he scores goals like this.”

A growth spurt and dedication in the gym has seen Eikrem this season develop the kind of stature that allows him to impose himself on games and has easily been Manchester United most impressive reserve player, grabbing a brace along with Josh King in a 4-0 win against Sunderland.

This performance lead to him being given a squad number for the season (42) as well as a place on the bench in United’s Carling Cup victory over Wolves.

Eikrem’s good form is not lost on Sir Alex Ferguson who reported gave Eikrem a new 4 year contract on £6000 a week contract in October, which for a reserve player is quite something.

Eikrem has great vision and passing which he puts to great effect in raking up assists as well as being a very intelligent player knowing when to hold on to the ball and when to release it but his best attribute is his lethal set pieces. Solskjaer remarked, “He practices them all the time, every single day in training sessions.”

His dedication to improving his delivery as well as shooting from dead ball situations is reminiscent of former United legend, David Beckham and if Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s words and Sir Alex Ferguson’s faith are to be believed who is to say he won’t reach the same heights?

Eikrem, datang ke United pada waktu dia masih berumur 16 th (alumni SSB Solksjaer, Norwegia) ... dan pada waktu itu tinggi tubuhnya hanya sekitar 160-an cm ...

Kini d usia 20 th, tinggi tubuh Eikrem sudah 180 cm...(perkembangan tinggi badan yg sangat pesat .... @-) )

Kelemahan Eikrem yg lain, he is injury prone ...:(

Every so often comes a player who possesses something special; the kind whose raw, impressive talents catch the eye immediately. For Magnus Eikrem is truly, and to quote a well-worn cliché, a ‘Star in the Making’. Sure, he needs developing, nurturing and some good old-fashioned Fergie-polishing but what is clear is that this young boy, mentored by another Norweigan, one Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, is that he is as close as ever to graduating into the first team.

For, if early season reserve games are anything to go by, the lad certainty has talent. Having inspired the second string to a 4-0 win over Bolton last week, in which some observers called a Man of the Match performance despite Nicky Ajose’s quickfire hattrick, he once again pulled the strings against a strong Blackburn outfit last night and it was his late goal that rescued a point in a 2-2 stalemate. United’s next reserve game isn’t until November and it’s fairly obvious that Eikrem needs some games in order to develop, because frankly, a footballer with such promise should not have a month off at this time of season.

Once you watch the Norwegian play, you can fully understand why I think United don’t need a new central midfielder; plus they have Tom Cleverley waiting in the wings, too. Indeed, he is a perfect long-term replacement for Paul Scholes, although many would be quick to compare him to Cesc Fabregas (or even Luka Modric) as both like to cover vast distances on the pitch. Comparisons are often unfair, but they do have their similarities.

Tom Cleverley was sent on loan to Wigan Athletic prior to the season and although the decision had some baffled (including me), the club and the player are likely to reap the rewards from the spell. A Championship loan move will suit Eikrem just fine; the promise of regular football plus a more demanding, physical league compared to that of the Premier Reserve League. Failing that, there is the old polishing way I talked of earlier, which requires patience but the rewards could soon be evident. United’s Carling Cup tie at home to Wolverhampton could be the perfect stage for Magnus Eikrem. I ask myself: how long before the inevitable?

It’s been another impressive month for United’s youngsters across all levels, leaving us with a tough decision when picking September’s star man. While a couple of players have made compelling cases with their goalscoring exploits, we’ve gone for a man who’s predominantly a creator – the reserves’ captain and playmaking midfield maestro Magnus Eikrem.

The Norwegian did find the net in the second string’s final game of the month, grabbing his side a deserved point away at Blackburn, but caught the eye most with his creativity. It’s only a slight exaggeration to say that Eikrem played a part in every goal the reserves scored in September (and there were a fair few) – in addition to the one he scored himself, the 20 year-old also directly set up three and played a key role in the creation of five more.

Eikrem was arguably a man of the match candidate in every game he played, but his performance in the Manchester Senior Cup tie against Bolton was particularly outstanding, Nick Ajose the main beneficiary as Eikrem laid on the second and third installments of his hattrick before having a hand in John Cofie’s late strike for good measure. The only sour note from an impressive month was that a first team debut wasn’t forthcoming, despite being selected as a substitute for the Carling Cup tie at Scunthorpe where the Reds took a commanding lead and had a substitution to spare. Hopefully this month’s fourth round clash with Wolves will provide a chance to rectify that.

We’ve already mentioned Nick Ajose’s hattrick against Bolton, so it won’t be too much of a surprise to say that he was a strong contender for the award. The 18 year-old impressed throughout pre-season and has carried that form into competitive action, netting five times last month to fire his way to the top of the reserves goalscoring charts. His treble against the Trotters was a brilliant display of instinctive finishing and likely played a part in securing his loan move to Bury four days later, where he immediately impressed with a pair of assists at Morecambe last week.

Similarly prolific in September was John Cofie, who would have won our August award if we hadn’t been too busy to choose one and wasn’t far away this time either. The big Ghana-born forward has taken a huge step forward this season and these days it’s something of a shock if he gets through a game without finding the net. Picking up where he left off with seven goals at the Milk Cup and two in the first two academy games of the season, Cofie grabbed another six last month, most impressively notching half of those at reserve level, where he’s becoming an increasingly useful option for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Honourable mentions go to Ryan Tunnicliffe, who had a consistently excellent month and was magnificent in the U18s’ draw away at Manchester City, and Tom Thorpe, who has led Paul McGuinness’ academy side with distinction and barely put a foot wrong at the back.

The problem with Eikrem is, that most of the time we play 4-4-2 and he doesn´t fit into this formation. He doesn´t have the physical presence or ball-winning ability to play in a midfield two.

The role Anderson played in the last few games as a creative midfielder in front of two cm´s would suit him most or as an cm in a barca like system with a defensiv mid behind him.

But his passing, which he showed in the reserves, and his vision are up to first team standards (think only Carrick or Scholes are better in this aspect from our midfielders).

Would love to see a central midfield like this in the carling cup to give him some time:

Pantes... bukan bermaksud menghina fisik tapi kaget juga rasanya dulu hidungnya nggak gitu.

Fakta lain yang cukup mengejutkan (buat aku yang baru tau), ternyata Eikrem mengidap diabetes. Tapi bukan halangan juga sih tapi ya baru tau aja. Moga dengan pengawasan dari tim dokter United dia bisa mengatasi hal itu dan terus melaju di tim utama seperti halnya Scholes dengan asma-nya.

Following Ole Solskjaer’s last game in charge of the Man United Reserves last night, it was privately announced that Magnus Eikrem would also be leaving United and going to FK Molde.

This news whilst not as gutting as Solskjaer’s loss is a real shame more than anything for those who ever watched Maggy or followed the Reserves. Eikrem was the captain of the second string and evidently one of the more talented players. His eye for a pass and ability to create space for himself meant he ran the show for the team.

Lots of people hoped Eikrem would get a chance in the First Team before long and he made the bench a couple of times in the Carling Cup this year.

His contract was up this summer and so the club had a decision to make – renew and commit to giving him a chance or sell him seemingly to FK Molde. The latter options appears to have been taken. Jon Martin Henriksen and the Manchester United Supporters Club – Scandinavian Branch confirmed the news to me on Twitter but did also say that the deal is not officially concluded:

“That’s right” he said when I asked him that Eikrem had said goodbye, “Magnus case is not confirmed, but that’s really about it, I have heard in recent days. There is no doubt that Eikrem has a very good relationship with OGS. In Molde, he will gain confidence, playing time and have a coach who believes in him.”

It’s with a heavy heart that he leaves us…arguably one of the most talented players to have not played for the first team in recent years. No one can begrudge him a move back to his home-town team though and the opportunity to play first team football under Ole. He recently alluded to the fact that he was aware he was so close to the first team at United but he needed to be playing week-in-week-out now.

Right now it seems likely he will join in January as he said goodbye to all his team-mates after the 5-1 win over Newcastle Reserves last night (goals from Morrison x2, Will Keane x2 and Tunnicliffe) but that has not been confirmed. Neither a fee nor any information about a buy-back-clause/first option agreement have been made public yet either.

Manchester United have sold exciting Norwegian prospect Magnus Eikrem to club legend Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's Molde - but have inserted a buy-back option.

talkSPORT told you last year how Solskjaer, who left his post as reserves manager to move back to Molde in January, that midfielder Eikrem was one of his main targets to take to him to Norway.

And talkSPORT has learned that Eikrem - highly rated by Sir Alex Ferguson - has moved to join Solskjaer at Molde having signed a three-year deal.

But United have insisted on a buy-back option, similar to the one inserted in Ryan Shawcross' contract when he moved to Stoke, so that if Eikrem blossoms in Norway, Ferguson will have first option on him.
