Manchester United vs Besiktas

Man Utd boss Ferguson to hand kids Besiktas chance

Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson is ready to give his youngsters European experience this week.
United face Besiktas at Old Trafford on Wednesday night at the top of Group B.
And Ferguson will utilise his squad in the belief that staying at the summit is not as important as previous years.
He added: “I will freshen the team up because finishing first or second doesn’t seem to be as important this year. We want to keep our consistency in the competition. We have got a good record, both at home and away, and we want to maintain them both.
“But who would I want to face in the knock-out stages? For instance, would you want to face Real Madrid or AC Milan?
“Look at the group with Rubin Kazan, Inter Milan and Barcelona. Now that’s an interesting one and I really can’t pick a winner there. If it’s Lyon or Fiorentina, who would it be best to face? There’s not a lot between them.
“Then there’s Bordeaux, Bayern Munich and Juventus. I think the Champions League is probably more open this season than ever before.”

Man Utd pair Evans, Berbatov fail to shake off injuries
-tribalfootball.com-
Manchester United pair Jonny Evans and Dimitar Berbatov will be rested for this week's Champions League commitments.
Evans, the defender, and Berbatov, the striker, are almost certain to miss United’s Champions League tie at home to Besiktas on Wednesday.
Evans is carrying a calf injury, while Berbatov has a knee problem. Both players aggravated their injuries while on international duty.

Reds ready for a Turkey shoot
-manchestereveningnews.co.uk-

UNITED warmed up for a turkey shoot against Besiktas on Wednesday after rediscovering their killer instinct against Everton.
The Reds' 3-0 success was the first time they had enjoyed such a clear victory at Old Trafford all season.
Prior to the win United had conceded 11 times at home in nine matches and had failed to kill off sides.
But Wednesday's Champions League visitors from Istanbul have conceded six goals in their four Group B matches and have only one point.
With the Reds having already qualified for the knockout stages it is an opportunity to sharpen their goal-scoring claws.
"It has been a tad frustrating in that we haven't killed teams off. We have been creating chances but they have not been going in for us," said Michael Carrick.
"It was nice to kill the game off this time. We haven't been scoring an awful lot of goals at home to kill teams off so to see the second and third go in was nice and we could relax and play a bit of football.
"It was also very important we bounced back after the Chelsea defeat.
"We took a lot of positives out of the Chelsea game and we showed it didn't knock us out of our stride. We know what we can do and we believe we can still be up there when it counts."

Manchester United v Besiktas: Danny Welbeck and Federico Macheda get chance
-telegraph.co.uk-
http://i.telegraph.co.uk/telegraph/multimedia/archive/01529/federico_macheda_1529436c.jpg
Sir Alex Ferguson is ready to hand teenage forwards Danny Welbeck and Federico Macheda a Champions League challenge against Besiktas on Wednesday after claiming their time has come to make the big breakthrough at Manchester United.
Having already secured qualification from Group B, Ferguson admits he is now prepared to experiment with his team in the final two games, at home to Besiktas and away to Wolfsburg on Dec 8.
Young strikers Welbeck, 19 on Thursday, and Macheda, 18, have been conspicuous by their absence from Ferguson’s squads this term.
Barring sporadic outings in the Carling Cup, senior appearances have been limited for the youngsters.
But Ferguson admits that he must now test Welbeck and Macheda at the highest level in order not to stunt their development at Old Trafford.
Ferguson said: “I will be making changes (against Besiktas). Not a lot, but enough just to freshen it up.
“It’s a problem keeping players happy, but everyone has that when you have a squad of players.
“We use the League Cup for that and, if we can qualify early enough in the (Champions League) group, we can then use the likes of Welbeck.
“He will definitely play (against Besiktas) and Macheda too probably. They are the ones that need to be challenged.
“They’ve reached a point, and it happens in football, when a footballer has the ability to be a top player and you recognise that.
“You have to give them the challenge. If you don’t, they lose the scent.
“But this club has been good at recognising that over the years.
“It’s unfortunate for players above them, but when the likes of Nicky Butt and Paul Scholes came through, we thought they were certainties, but we had to give them a chance. And we did.
“That’s the nature of football. A young player turns the corner and takes someone’s job.”
United are three points clear of second placed Wolfsburg and top spot will, and a seeding for the second round draw, will be secured with four points from their remaining two games.
But Ferguson admits that, despite the planned changes, he expects his team to deliver positive results.
He said: “We have two records to maintain. Our home record has been really good over the last few years, but away from home, we can go past Ajax’s record of being unbeaten if we avoid defeat in Wolfsburg.
“So we have that consistency to protect and hopefully we can do that.”

Dimitar Berbatov may return for Manchester United against Besiktas
-guardian.co.uk-
http://static.guim.co.uk/sys-images/Football/Pix/pictures/2009/11/1/1257071719655/Dimitar-Berbatov-celebrat-001.jpg
Dimitar Berbatov could make his return from injury in Manchester United's Champions League game against Besiktas at Old Trafford. The Bulgarian missed matches either side of the international break with a knee injury and Sir Alex Ferguson stated on Saturday his £30.75m forward would miss tomorrow evening's game too.
However, Berbatov was able to train with his team-mates today and Ferguson may now consider using him against Besiktas, who are winless in the group.
Ferguson does have a few injury concerns. Rio Ferdinand is definitely out with an injury to his lower back, as is Johnny Evans after failing to recover from a calf problem. Neither John O'Shea nor the captain Gary Neville were training with the main group this morning. That could mean a rare start for the likes of Darron Gibson and Gabriel Obertan.
The main change, though, will be in goal. Edwin van der Sar was not expected to face the Turkish champions even before he suffered a knock on a knee in Saturday's win over Everton.
The Dutchman was not training this morning, which leaves Ferguson to decide between Tomasz Kuszczak and Ben Foster, who last week expressed frustration at apparently only being third choice for United despite playing in England's last two internationals.
walopun MU dh pasti lolos fase group..
tp kemenangan smpe penyisihan grup berakhir penting..
buat ngejaga konsistensi permaenan..
1-0 ato 2-0 cukup buat MU...

24/11/2009 11:11, Report by Nick Coppack & Ben Hibbs
Reds' defence depleted
United trained without Edwin van der Sar and five defenders on Tuesday morning as the Reds stepped up preparations ahead of Wednesday night’s Champions League clash with Besiktas.
Van der Sar, Gary Neville, Rio Ferdinand, Jonny Evans, John O’Shea and Fabio were all missing as the press gathered to watch Sir Alex put his side through their paces. Journalists will have to wait until Tuesday afternoon’s press conference, however, before grilling the boss on just how much should be read into the players’ absence.
United have already sealed qualification to the Champions League knockout rounds so Sir Alex won’t want to take any undue risks with injured players. But top spot is still up for grabs, as is the chance to extend the Reds’ 24-game unbeaten home record in Europe.
There were positives to be taken from Tuesday morning’s session, too: Ji-sung Park and Dimitar Berbatov took part (both have missed recent matches through injury), while Owen Hargreaves, although training away from the main group, was involved in some light fitness work. He hasn’t played since September 2008, but played some short passes with a member of the coaching staff and did some keepy-ups – all signs that the Englishman is well on the way to making a comeback from his double knee surgery.
Sir Alex’s press conference is due to take place at Old Trafford at 14:00 GMT.
Training squad: Foster, Kuszczak; Rafael, Brown, Vidic, Evra; Anderson, Fletcher, Valencia, Giggs, Scholes, Carrick, Park, Gibson, Obertan, Nani; Rooney, Owen, Berbatov, Welbeck, Macheda.

Whilst it’s great to see the likes of Owen Hargreaves, Ji-Sung Park and Dimitar Berbatov present, it’s not so great to notice Edwin Van der Sar, Jonny Evans, John O’Shea, Gary Neville and of course, Rio Ferdinand, are all missing.
Of course, it’s only Besiktas, meaning Van der Sar wasn’t expected to play anyway, but let’s hope the knock to the knee he received against Everton doesn’t keep him out at the weekend.

Sir Alex Ferguson has admitted that his defensive options remain limited ahead of Manchester United's Champions League clash with Besiktas on Wednesday night.
United have already qualified for the last 16 with two group games still remaining so Ferguson has the luxury of resting some key players against the Turkish champions.
However, he looks set to name the same back four that started Saturday's Premier League game against Everton as several defenders remain sidelined by injury.
Nemanja Vidic, Rafael, Wes Brown and Patrice Evra were the only four defenders to take part in training on Tuesday.
Rio Ferdinand, John O'Shea, Jonny Evans and Fabio have all been ruled out, while skipper Gary Neville is doubtful.
"They're all out," revealed Ferguson."Really it's a fight to get one of them for Saturday's game (against Portsmouth). But I have my doubts.
"Sometimes it happens and you get good runs free of injury and other times you don't.
"That's the value of having a good squad. It'll probably be the same back four as Saturday against Everton.
"Gary Neville didn't train today but I'm hoping he'll train on Wednesday so we will see how he is after that.
"We have plenty of options in midfield and in the front positions. It's just the back four that is causing us concern. I hope I get one or two more fit for Saturday."
Darron Gibson, Gabriel Obertan and Ji-sung Park are all expected to start for the Red Devils at Old Trafford.

Besiktas fans reveal united front
-bbc.co.uk-
http://newsimg.bbc.co.uk/media/images/46792000/jpg/_46792678_carsi_get466x260.jpg
"Football isn't just a sport. Nowadays it's an industry," says Besiktas fan Ozan Ilhan ahead of his side's clash with Manchester United on Wednesday.
The smallest of Turkey's "big three", Besiktas are seen in their country as the halk takim, the people's team.
The team's fan base is traditionally more working-class and left-wing than those of rivals Galatasaray and Fenerbahce, and their supporters' club, Carsi, takes this history to heart.
Formed by six teenagers in 1980, Carsi is now a thousands-strong organisation that, unusually, marries fanaticism for the team with political causes.
Ozan is a 24-year-old student who lives in the German city of Koblenz, and works in the city's car industry.
He is one of the 1,000 or so Carsi members making the trip to Manchester.
"My wife cannot understand me," he complains. "She says: 'Why fly to Manchester for Besiktas? You can watch it at home on the television.'"
http://newsimg.bbc.co.uk/media/images/46792000/jpg/_46792679_besiktasfans_get226.jpg
They are coming from all over Europe - 150 from Germany, 50 from Holland, 50 from London - for a match they probably won't win and, even if they do, has no bearing on them qualifying for the next stage.
"Carsi is like a spirit," says Devrim Borcek, another fan from Germany.
"Those living in Istanbul are close to Besiktas. I'm living 3000km away but I have to live the same as these guys."
But this is more than an ordinary supporters' club trip.
Carsi is a hive of activity, both at matches and away from the stadium.
It has a changing cast of members but, for the core, the group is central to their lives.
Together they take part in Labour Day marches, do charity work, produce placards for matches, and even protest against government nuclear policy - or just meet up to drink and talk about football.
Fans are introduced to ideas like anarchism and socialism that don't get an airing in traditional media, let alone most football stadia.
By contrast, the fans they will encounter on Wednesday have been dubbed the "prawn sandwich brigade" for their corporate approach to supporting a team.
So how do Carsi members feel about Manchester United fans?
Ozan respects United's history and success, if not their fans' style of support.
"They are a good example of people who like the football industry, who like to go to the stadium, watch the match and go home," he says.
"That's not the culture of Besiktas. We have to scream whether we win or lose - all that matters is the atmosphere, the expectation that you are not only there but you are living it.
http://newsimg.bbc.co.uk/media/images/46792000/jpg/_46792680_manufans_get226.jpg
"I cannot imagine Besiktas like Manchester. It's not possible and I don't want it."
But they do want to be successful. Although winners of the Turkish league last year, Besiktas are currently at the bottom of Champions League group B, yet to win a European match this season.
Those in charge need to decide whether triumph on the European stage can be achieved without diluting the club's identity, in an age in which success increasingly depends on money.
The club's efforts to boost revenue have seen Carsi lose out.
Ticket prices have increased year on year, making it harder for the traditional fanbase to attend.
Seats in Carsi's section for last Saturday's derby against Fenerbahce cost 250 Lira (£100) - more than all but the most expensive tickets at Old Trafford.
"The three big clubs in Turkey - Besiktas, Galatasaray, Fenerbahce - their presidents don't want these fans in the stadium," a Turkish journalist tells me.
"Like in England, they want rich fans."
Where next for Carsi, then, if the club no longer wants them?
The globalisation of the game has brought the group opportunities and threats in equal measure.
Some members worry its 1980s collectivist ideology doesn't resonate with younger fans in an era of multi-million pound transfers and instant success.
But televised games, the internet and cheap European flights have brought more people into the Carsi fold.
Widespread publicity means the movement has become a magnet for those disenchanted with "typical" football fans, or even Turkish society in general.
They are fighting for a vision of what it means to be a fan - an all-consuming relationship with the club that they believe is alien to most in English football.
And so to Old Trafford, the 76,000-capacity, all-seated cathedral for the modern game.
"It will be a hard match, I think," says Ozan.
"Our chances aren't good. But remember the match in 2003 against Chelsea, when nobody expected Besiktas to win. It was wonderful, so why not again?"

Sir Alex Ferguson is facing a crisis at the back - with Rio Ferdinand injured and Nemanja Vidic exit looming
Sir Alex Ferguson is facing up to a long-term defensive crisis caused by Rio Ferdinand’s injury problems and the fact that Nemanja Vidic still wants to move abroad.
Manchester United manager Ferguson has had to juggle his back four and goalkeeper constantly this season as injuries to key players have prevented him sticking with a settled defensive line-up.
It is understood Ferguson now has real worries about the future after being told that Ferdinand’s back problem is likely to re-occur throughout his career and having reluctantly realised that he will not be able to hold on to Vidic for much longer.
http://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2009/11/24/article-1230679-03D7FDA2000005DC-441_468x322.jpg
Crisis at the back: Ferdinand and Vidic on better form for United
The two players have been at the heart of everything United have achieved in recent years and the season began with Ferguson hoping they would be together at the centre of his defence for two or three seasons to come at least.
But it is apparent now that Vidic will leave the club in the near future after becoming frustrated with life off the pitch in Manchester.
Despite the 28-year-old Serbian denying suggestions earlier this year that his wife Ana was unhappy in England, it remains the case that the couple do have an eye on a move to southern Europe — in all likelihood Spain.
http://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2009/11/24/article-1230679-015284C400000578-388_468x286.jpg
Want-away? Vidic and his wife Ana who has her eye on a move to Spain
Vidic remains grateful to Ferguson loomsfor giving him the opportunity to move west when he bought him from Spartak Moscow in January 2006 and has not ruled out staying until the end of his current £70,000-a-week contract until 2012.
United will try to tempt him with a new contract in the following six months but he is unlikely to sign one and there is no way, particularly in the current economic climate, that United will allow his current deal simply to run down.
This means the English champions will have to think about selling him next summer or soon after if they are not to lose one of the best central defenders in the Barclays Premier League for a knockdown fee.
Coincidentally, Vidic has this week given an interview to a United fanzine in which he was asked about his future.
The Serbia centre half said: ‘To be honest, you never know what is going to happen. I’ll be 30 by the end of my contract.
http://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2009/11/24/article-0-01E60B4A000004B0-468_468x355.jpg
Have a word: Vidic believes his future remains undecided
‘I can’t say what is going to happen in one year, two years’ time. At the moment I’m happy and I’m here. See what the club is going to say, what it is going to be.
‘I want to play here well and for the fans and everyone to be happy with me, to see that I give the right effort, to give my best, to give 100 per cent. What is going to happen in the future, that no one knows.
I definitely have two-and-a-half years left on my contract here and I will stay here.’
Vidic will play at the heart of United’s defence tonight as Ferguson’s team face Turkish side Besiktas at Old Trafford in what is virtually a Champions League dead rubber.
Ferdinand remains sidelined with the back problem that has kept him out of the team and it appears this is something that will have to be managed in the long term.
Tonight Wes Brown will partner Vidic with Patrice Evra and the Brazilian Rafael da Silva occupying the full back roles.
Republic of Ireland international Darron Gibson will play in central midfield and there is expected to be a starting berth for young forward Danny Welbeck.

Golden opportunity: Gibson is to be given his second start in Champions League
Ferguson said: ‘This is a good fixture because I can try one or two things. We will challenge the younger players like Gibson and young Rafa. It is a great challenge for these players. I may start with Gabriel Obertan too.
‘Darron Gibson is not playing the amount of football he would wish but he has very good competition in Paul Scholes, Anderson, Michael Carrick and Darren Fletcher.
‘But he has never let it get to him in terms of being unsettled. His performances in training are excellent and he comes in knowing it has been worthwhile.
‘Sometimes you can’t hold a young man back and that time is approaching for Darron now that he is becoming a good, powerful midfield player.’

United’s opening victory in Istanbul set them up for a comfortable passage through Group B though tonight’s game may find Besiktas in better shape, given that they have won their last six domestic fixtures.
With clubs such as Barcelona, Liverpool and Bayern Munich struggling in Europe, it is indicative of United’s ability to play effective Champions League football that they are likely to win their group despite being some way from their best in the Premier League.
‘I think there are one or two more difficult groups than we anticipated,’ acknowledged Ferguson. ‘The one with Rubin Kazan, Barcelona, Dynamo Kiev and Inter Milan has been a real group of death.
‘That shows how tough it is to retain the cup as we nearly did last season. Maybe our achievement has been underestimated because you see how difficult Barcelona have been finding it. They were my favourites to win it.’

Back in action: Hargreaves is put through his paces after 14 months out injured
United’s early training session briefly featured Owen Hargreaves yesterday but the England midfielder’s activity was limited to a few shuttle runs.
Ferguson had initially suggested the 28-year-old may be back in action by the end of the Champions League group stage but it appears his recovery has been slower than anticipated.
Ferguson said: ‘It’s difficult to say when he will be fit. You are not getting an answer to that. It is a confidence thing to know when he is ready and that will be sooner or later.’

Manchester United Scouting Report: Seven Wins In A Row Boosts Besiktas For Old Trafford Bow
-goal.com-

But the Turkish champions must overcome their European travel blues...
Besiktas are in red hot form and determined to follow up victory in the Istanbul derby by claiming a spot in the Europa League.
The Turkish champions have travelled to Manchester on a roll. A winning streak in the league was extended to seven at the weekend after a crushing 3-0 victory over bitter rivals Fenerbahce.
Sir Alex Ferguson’s announcement that he will ring the changes in his already-qualified Manchester United side has increased the chance of a smash and grab raid at Old Trafford. Come out on top, and bottom-placed Besiktas can face CSKA Moscow in the final Champions League group meeting with the prize of continued European involvement up for grabs.
Recent form
If there is ever a good time to travel to Old Trafford, now is the moment for Besiktas. A stunning roll call of wins in the league was topped by a dominant performance on Saturday which has put them back into contention to retain their title.
Table-topping Fenerbache were dismissed with ease as Michael Fink, Bobo and Ugur Inceman got on the scoresheet without reply. This is the boost coach Mustafa Denizli was looking for to push his charges on for the challenge they face.
When Besiktas fell 1-0 to United in the Champions League opener they sat a distant 12 points off the pace. Their upturn in fortune allows them to dream of the result which would open the door to the Europa League.

Away pain
Besiktas’ Inonu Stadium is one the most intimidating grounds in the sport, but they struggle badly without home comforts.
A shocking record on the road in Europe has seen them win just one match in 14, conceding 38 goals in the process. This run included an embarrassing 8-0 defeat to Liverpool on their last visit to the north west of England.
United’s 23-game unbeaten streak at home is a considerable obstacle to mount. Fail to rise to the challenge and Besiktas can forget third spot.

They say
Mustafa Denizli, Besiktas coach: “As a coach I'd almost prefer to be able to set up my team knowing we'll be against the Manchester United first-choice team, with more familiar players that we in Turkey know more about. Besiktas will go out with our own game plan, but our future is not just in our hands.
“It all depends on how we do and what other teams do too. Our aim is to always go as far as possible in Europe. United's approach is that they want to win every game regardless of the position they're in.
“They may have already qualified but they'll want to win, because that's what United always strive to do.”
Sir Alex Ferguson, Manchester United manager: “We're in a good position, we have qualified. It's always an issue whether it makes a difference finishing first or second in the group, but we'll try to be number one.
“We will be playing some of the younger players but we're not sure about formation just at the moment, we're still looking at analysis of Besiktas.
“Their form has been transformed in the last six [league] matches, they have won them all and on Saturday they beat the top-of-the-league side 3-0 so they're in very good form.”

Besiktas Coach Mustafa Denizli Out To Upset Manchester United
-goal.com-

Turkish powerhouse Besiktas are in desperate need of a good result against Manchester United at Old Trafford on Wednesday, but head coach Mustafa Denizli is aware that beating the Premier League champions won't be easy.
"Going back to the first game in Istanbul against United, Besiktas played good football, as we did against Wolfsburg, but the results didn't go our way," Denizli was quoted as saying by Turkish reporters.
"As a coach I'd almost prefer to be able to set up my side knowing we'll be against the Manchester United first-choice team, with more familiar players that we in Turkey know more about.
"Besiktas will go out with our own game plan, but our future is not just in our hands. It all depends on how we do and what other teams do too. Our aim is to always go as far as possible in Europe.
"United's approach is that they want to win every game regardless of the position they're in. They may have already qualified but they'll want to win, because that's what United always strive to do.
"Even if they do play some youngsters, those may well be stars of the future. For example Rafael and [Darron] Gibson will definitely be stars – I'm 100 per cent sure of that."
United have already qualified for the knock-out phase with ten points from four games, while Besiktas sit last in the table with only one point.

Paul Scholes' header was enough to give United victory in Istanbul two months ago. Now the Reds need three more points against the Turks to all but secure top spot in Champions League Group B…
Form guide: Bottom of the group with a solitary point from four matches, Besiktas need to win both their final games to stand a chance of qualifying for the Europa League ahead of CSKA Moscow. The Black Eagles will, however be in bullish mood after moving to within four points of the Turkish league summit with a 3-0 win over Fenerbahce on Saturday. It was the champions’ seventh consecutive league victory, their biggest of the season and their first over their city rivals since April 2005. United are undefeated in 24 European home games stretching back to AC Milan in February 2005, and go into the game on the back of an easy home win over Everton, which leaves the Reds second in the table.
Ins and outs: Czech defender Tomas Sivok is suspended for the visitors after picking up four yellow cards in the competition, while Filip Holosko (broken fibula) Ridvan Simsek (groin), Nihat Kahveci (hamstring), Hakan Arikan (wrist) and Ismail Koybasi (ankle) could all miss out. For United, defenders Gary Neville, Rio Ferdinand, John O’Shea, Jonny Evans and Fabio are all either out or very doubtful, but Dimitar Berbatov and Ji-sung Park (both knee) are back in contention. Sir Alex Ferguson has declared he will field some of his youngsters, with Darron Gibson, Gabriel Obertan and Rafael all set to start.
Manager: Mustafa Denizli is the Turkish league's oldest boss. His 10 different appointments since 1987 include a spell in Germany and one in charge of Turkey, whom he guided to the quarter-finals of Euro 2000. As well as Besiktas, he’s also coached Istanbul's other two big clubs, Galatasaray and Fenerbahce.
Star man: Brazilian striker Bobo did not face United at the Inonu Stadium in September, but his powerful, direct style could pose problems for the Reds’ patched-up defence. Veteran goalkeeper Rustu Recber returned from injury to the starting line-up against Fenerbahce and is set to play on Wednesday. The 36-year-old former Turkey number one conceded six goals at Old Trafford while playing for Fenerbahce in September 2004, the game in which Wayne Rooney scored a debut hat-trick.
Referee: Frenchman Stephane Lannoy is the man in the middle on Wednesday. He took charge of Wolfsburg’s 3-1 home win over CSKA Moscow in September. He’s also on the referee shortlist for the World Cup next summer.
Rivals watch: Wolfsburg will probably need to beat CSKA Moscow at the Luzhniki Stadium to stand a chance of overhauling United at the top of the group. Already-qualified Chelsea are looking to win Group D by beating second-placed Porto at the Estadio do Dragao.

ALEX FERGUSON saw his youth clubbed as Besiktas stole the points at Old Trafford.
Rodrigo Tello cashed in on Rafael's pedestrian defending to snatch the game's only goal.
United, who had gone 23 European games unbeaten at HQ, needed just a point to cement their place as Group B winners.
But with 18-year-olds Federico Macheda and Danny Welbeck leading the line, the apprentices couldn't conjure up a leveller.
That was despite spells of dominance stretching back to the very FIRST minute.
Gabriel Obertan hared down the right and Macheda narrowly missed his cross.
Macheda then latched onto a tracer bullet pass from Anderson and freed Welbeck, who shot straight at keeper Recber Rustu.
Old timer Gary Neville was caught on the ball by Deivison Bobo, who let the United skipper off the hook with a wild shot.
The hosts weren't so lucky when Besiktas broke a few moments later.
With 20 minutes on the clock, Tello was given acres of space and teased a 30-yard shot past Ben Foster — courtesy of a deflection off Rafael's head.
The Brazilian full-back had been caught out of position and received a rollicking from Nemanja Vidic.
A tricky exchange of passes then freed Welbeck, who centred straight at Rustu.
Obertan was next to break through. But the 20-year-old fared no better than pal Welbeck.
United were almost caught napping AGAIN when they allowed Michael Fink to pick the ball up on the edge of the box.
German Fink wrong-footed Foster, only to hit his shot against the outside of the post.
Welbeck was back in the thick of it after the break. But the change of ends did the local lad no good and he scuffed another shot on goal.
Park was next up to try his luck, with the South Korean lashing narrowly wide of Rustu's right post.
On the hour, Fergie's kids were given a warning when Michael Owen, Michael Carrick and Nani began to warm up on the touchline.
Obertan responded to the sub threat by charging through the middle and forcing a fine save from Rustu.
After 68 minutes, Fergie finally wielded the axe. Experienced Park made way for striker Owen.
Carrick and Patrice Evra came on four minutes later — with Gibson and Rafael hauled off — as United stepped up for the hunt for a point.
Neville then played a perfectly-weighted ball to Obertan, only for another chance to go begging.
Carrick stepped up to take a free-kick just outside the box. But his effort was the worst yet, as the midfielder tamely stroked the set piece into the wall.
With just four minutes to go, United were up in arms after Evra was manhandled in the box.
The Frenchman was livid when play was waved on as he lay on the floor.
Deep into injury time, keeper Foster charged forward for a corner. And he leapt side-by-side with Wes Brown, who had his header brilliantly tipped round the post.
Incredibly, with 96 minutes on the clock, there was still long enough for another Rustu save — denying Carrick for one final time.

Besiktas Runtuhkan Keangkeran Old Trafford

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson admitted his young players still have a lot to learn after their 1-0 Champions League defeat to Besiktas at Old Trafford left them waiting to top Group B.
Rodrigo Tello's goal for the Turkish side means United must now take at least a point from their remaining fixture in Wolfsburg to finish top of the group.
Ferguson told ITV1: "I think we were a bit anxious but it's not a bad thing - they're young and you expect them to make mistakes.
"It was a stellar performance in terms of the flow of the game. We've shown some really good things tonight and that's encouraging but at the end of the day we just didn't get the result we needed."
But Ferguson insisted he would have no qualms about repeating the inexperienced line-up for the trip to Germany, saying his ultimate decision rested on the club's situation heading into that tie.
"We'll see how our programme is going at the time but I'd be confident in these players," Ferguson added, before claiming United were denied a clear penalty when Patrice Evra was downed in the area.
"It's a penalty kick - that's two games in a row they have denied us stonewall penalties but what can you do about it?" he said.
"In the second half they (Besiktas) went very defensive, they stopped the game and played out time. It's difficult for young players to understand that, but it's a good experience for them."

Besiktas shock Man Utd at Old Trafford
-tribalfootball.com-
http://www.tribalfootball.com/sites/default/files/imagecache/medium/stories/ferguson.jpg
Manchester United's 23 game unbeaten home record in the Champions League ended with a 1-0 defeat to Turkish outfit Besiktas.
The Reds only needed a point to guarantee top spot in Group B but for all their possession they failed to find a way through a well organised opposition who gained in confidence as the game progressed.
United dominated the first half both in possession and chances created but still found themselves a goal down at the interval.
United took the field with a strikeforce of two 18 year old forwards, Daniel Welbeck and Federico Macheda who both had chances but were crowded out by a defensive Besiktas side.
Gabriel Obertan looked lively and tricky but too often the final ball was found wanting.
Nemanja Vidic had a free header from an Anderson corner and really should have scored but skewed his header away from goal.
But the visitor's were content to defend in depth and wait for the chance to counter attack.
Their league form had seen them win seven games on the bounce and they looked comfortable on the ball without being threatening.
In fact their European record away from home is just one win in fourteen outings so it was a shock when Besiktas took the lead on 20 minutes.
Rodrigo Tello let fly from out on the right and a wicked deflection off Rafael took the ball past a luckless Ben Foster for only the Turkish side's second goal in the group stages this season.
Instead of continuing as before United faded as the half ended as the inexperienced side looked anxious.
And on 40 minutes Michael Fink should have doubled the visitor's advantage, but his effort clipped the outside of the post.
The second period was probably more comfortable than Besiktas had expected as United failed to even create the chances of the first half as they continued to push forward, but to little effect.
Only in the final minutes did the hosts threaten an equaliser.
Substitute Patrice Evra was clearly body-checked by Ibrahim Kas as the Frenchman burst into the penalty area but the official waved play on.
"It's a penalty, a stonewall penalty," claimed Reds boss Sir Alex Ferguson. "That's two games in a row we have been denied stonewall penalties."
Then in injury time Anderson crossed for Macheda whose header was brilliantly saved by Rustu Recber.
From the resulting corner Rustu again prevented a United leveller with a fine stop from Wes Brown's head.
The defeat means United failed to confirm their status as Group B winners but a point from their last game against Wolfsburg will help them avoid some of the bigger teams in the knock-out stages.
Ferguson preferred to look at the positives his young side would have taken away in experience.
"We didn't get the breaks.
"They went very defensive in the second half. Kept stopping the game, played out time, players lying on the ground.
"It's very difficult for young players to understand that, but fortunately we are through and it's good experience.
"They were anxious and nervous, which is understandable but overall we controlled the game but just didn't get the goals we wanted."[COLOR="Silver"]

No Turkish delight for United
-uk.eurosport.yahoo.com-
Thirteen years after Fenerbahce became the first team to defeat Manchester United in a European game at Old Trafford, fellow Turkish side Besiktas ended their 23-match unbeaten home record in the Champions League with a 1-0 win.
Rodrigo Tello's first-half effort did the damage, just as Elvir Bolic broke Sir Alex Ferguson's team all those years ago - goalkeeper Rustu Recber the constant - with United left to do a spot of naval gazing over the winter months.
A point at Wolfsburg in a fortnight will still secure top spot in Group B, qualification having already been achieved.
But, Gabriel Obertan apart, Ferguson knows his United team laboured badly against a side that had collected just a single point from their four previous matches.
Under-pressure keeper Ben Foster was beaten after 20 minutes by the goal, with the strike taking a slight deflection off Rafael Da Silva to leave Foster helpless.
Michael Fink also hit a post for the visitors, with United having their best chances late on when Rustu produced two stunning stops to deny Federico Macheda and Wes Brown.

Manchester United's next generation still have plenty to prove
guardian.co.uk
Defeat against Besiktas demonstrated that Manchester United's talented youngsters are not quite ready
Some good news for Liverpool at last. Manchester United's kids were not quite good enough to make finishing on top of Group B look easy.
It was only a narrow failure in the end and United have another chance in two weeks, yet though Sir Alex Ferguson was left regretting two late missed chances and saw a decent penalty shout, he accepted his inexperienced players were not quite up to the task and even questioned the value of winning the group.
"Some say the only real advantage is playing the second leg at home," he said. "You expect young players to make mistakes, and that's what happened. They are still learning the game. They did some good things but it was tough for them; Besiktas were playing out time and lying down as often as they could. It is difficult for young players to understand that."
Apart from the two occasions in the final seconds, when Rustu made saves to deny United, the home side's best chance of getting something out of the game was when Ibrahim Kas barged over Patrice Evra in the area. It appeared to be a deliberate check, and penalties have been given for less, but the French referee showed no favours to his countryman. "It was a penalty kick," Ferguson said. "That's two European games in a row where we have been denied stonewall penalties," he added, referring to the Darren Fletcher incident in the draw against CSKA Moscow. "If penalties are no longer given for fouls like that the game is in trouble."
Youth development is one of the ways in which Ferguson keeps faith with what he sees as United's traditions, even if youth players are now sourced from a wider area than was the case with the last notable crop to come through together, the basis of the side that won the treble in 1999. Gabriel Obertan is from Bordeaux, for example, and Federico Macheda from Rome, and if the Italian striker had been a couple of inches closer to the French winger's low cross United would have had the lead with barely a minute gone.
By the time the game was 15 minutes old Danny Welbeck had seen a shot blocked and a Darron Gibson effort took a deflection and ended up on the roof of the net, so in attack at least all United's reserve options were fully functioning. It was just a pity things went awry at the back midway through the first half, when a combination of a slight deflection off Rafael da Silva and more uncertain goalkeeping from Ben Foster allowed Rodrigo Tello's speculative though well struck shot to find the bottom corner and give Besiktas a shock lead. United's reserve goalkeeper gave a fairly nerveless display on his last outing with England but could not be happy about failing his first real test of the evening, especially as the shot was from 25 yards or more. It was unfortunate too that the Stretford End had just tempted fate by striking up a chant of "Are you watching, Merseyside?", which would have backfired to an even greater extent had Michael Fink added a second before the interval instead of striking the base of a post.
Yet if these young players are going to grow up in the United tradition they will have to get used to chasing games, overcoming adversity and putting things right in the pitch. They are not the finished article yet. Obertan looked the most eye-catching, with his pace and instant control, and there were even a few stepovers to put one vaguely in mind of Cristiano Ronaldo. There was nowhere near the same end product, however, and the rest of the kids were just a little too ponderous, though Ferguson gamely gave them every chance and they were still battling in stoppage time when Macheda and Wes Brown brought excellent saves from Rustu.
The result may have gone against them, but United's next generation seem to have the general idea. "The young players were a bit anxious when we needed more composure in the final third, but that's understandable, it's not the biggest fault in the world," Ferguson concluded. "Playing in that game tells them how highly we regard them as players, and shows the trust we have in them. They have shown they have the speed and the physical prowess to make it, the one thing you can't always give players of 18, 19 and 20 is experience, and that's why it is nice to have the opportunity."

Fergie Santai Meski MU Kalah

MANCHESTER UNITED'S LOSS TO BESKITAS RAISES QUESTION OVER KEEPER BEN FOSTER
-dailyexpress.co.uk-
http://images.dailyexpress.co.uk/img/dynamic/67/285x214/142530_1.jpg
Sir Alex Ferguson reasoned on the eve of this game that young players can lose the scent if they are not given first-team chances.
Last night his kids did not so much lose the scent but lose the plot as Manchester United’s proud 23-game unbeaten home record hit the dust in the Champions League.
They dominated the game but lacked composure in the last third and were beaten by Rodrigo Tello’s 20th-minute goal that raised more question marks over goalkeeper Ben Foster.
Thanks to Wolfsburg s defeat to CSKA Moscow, already-qualified United needed only a point to finish top of Group B.
But following their first European home defeat since Hernan Crespo’s header gave AC Milan a 1-0 win in February 2005, United will go to Germany still needing a draw to go through to the last 16 in first place.
United came close to pulling off one of their typical late comebacks with substitute Patrice Evra denied a clear penalty and Federico Macheda and Wes Brown seeing goal-bound headers brilliantly saved by Rustu Recber in added time.
But despite the frustration of the defeat, Ferguson will console himself that at least his youngsters have learned some valuable lessons.
Ferguson, as promised, gave his kids their chance, making eight changes and picking the youngest strike force he has ever fielded for a European game with Danny Welbeck and Macheda, both still teenagers.
It was Welbeck’s European debut and came on the eve of his 19th birthday.
A third teenager, Rafael Da Silva, was also included, while Gabriel Obertan, Anderson, 21, Darron Gibson, 22, helped to bring the average age of the team down to 24.
The young side heeded Ferguson’s demand to be aggressive and express themselves on their big night.
They could have been in front after a minute when Obertan sent over a dangerous cross from the right that Macheda just failed to connect with. Macheda then set up Welbeck for a shot that was blocked by a defender.
United kept up the early pressure and Gibson’s deflected shot landed on top of the net to earn United their first corner. From Anderson’s delivery Nemanja Vidic was left unmarked and should have scored but badly miscued his header across the penalty area.
Gibson was furious with himself after curling a good chance wide before Macheda cut in from the right and also shot wide.
Besiktas, who had not been a serious threat, took a surprise lead after 20 minutes with a goal that raised more question marks over the unfortunate Foster.
His hopes of a clean sheet in his first home game since his blunder against Sunderland snapped Ferguson’s patience, were dashed by Tello’s long-range shot. Foster could point to the fact that his defenders gave Tello, who received a crossfield ball from Ismail Koybasi, far too much time to line up his 30-yard effort that took a slight deflection off Rafael’s shoulder on its way into the far corner.
But the suspicion remained he could have done better, given the shot was not very powerful.
It gave Besiktas a shot of confidence. They haven’t been the best travellers to England – their last game on these shores ended in an 8-0 humiliation at Anfield.
The Turks, beaten by Paul Scholes’ header in Istanbul back in September, had only one point from the previous four group games.
United went looking for an equaliser but for all their dominance, United were lucky not to go in at the break two down with Michael Fink rolling a chance just wide after Bobo had set him up.
United’s second-half efforts continued to be met with frustration. Ji-Sung Park lashed a shot just wide before Obertan, who was looking United’s most dangerous player, saw a low shot, after a weaving run, tipped round by Recber. Obertan then directed a looping header onto the roof of the net.
Substitutes Michael Owen, Michael Carrick and Evra could not make up the difference.
MAN UTD (4-4-2): Foster; Neville, Brown, Vidic, Rafael (Evra 73); Obertan, Gibson (Carrick 73), Anderson, Park (Owen 68); Welbeck, Macheda.
BESIKTAS (4-2-3-1): Recber; Kas, Ferrari, Toraman (Guven 67), Uzulmez; Fink, Ernst; Dag, Tello (Inceman 75), Koybas; Bobo (Karadeniz 84). Booked: Karadeniz, Recber. Goal: Tello 20.
Referee: S Lannoy (France).

Fergie stands by Reds kids
-manchestereveningnews.co.uk-

UNITED manager Sir Alex Ferguson believes his youngsters will learn from experience after their 23-match unbeaten home record in the Champions League proper came to an unexpected end.
A goal from Rodrigo Tello in the 20th minute at Old Trafford was enough to give Besiktas their first win in Group B.
Tello's effort from distance deflected off Rafael and past a startled Ben Foster, who had been recalled to the side after two games for England.
With qualification to the last 16 already assured, Ferguson handed starts to the likes of Federico Macheda, Danny Welbeck, Gabriel Obertan and Darron Gibson.
United were looking for the point that would have seen them finish as group leaders, but came up short.
Ferguson said: “I thought we needed a bit of composure. The young players were a bit anxious and that is understandable in a way.
“It was an experimental line-up in a way. We have to be fair in the way we assess the players in these games.
“The value is the trust we have got in playing these young players. They are potentially top players.
“We know about Macheda and Welbeck while Obertan has only arrived at the club after having a long spell out through injury.
“The important thing is, though, they showed a good level. In the first half we had good opportunities but got caught on the counter-attack, which can happen of course.
“The goal followed a deflection off Rafael and we were chasing the game. Deflections off the body have a certain speed and that can cause a problem.”
United almost drew level in stoppage time but Besiktas goalkeeper Rustu Recber made two superb saves in quick succession from Macheda and then Wes Brown.
They also had a claim for a penalty dismissed late on by referee Stephane Lannoy when substitute Patrice Evra appeared to be blocked by Ibrahim Kas.
Evra appealed in vain and Ferguson questioned the decision, after feeling they also had a spot-kick claim rejected in the draw against CSKA Moscow last time around.
“I was right to be agitated, ” said the United boss. “If you can't give one like this and the one against CSKA Moscow then you are in trouble.
“It's a penalty kick - that's two games in a row they have denied us stonewall penalties but what can you do about it?”
