Manchester United facing fight to keep hold of first team coach
mirrorfootball.co.uk, Alan Nixon - 23:00 22/11/09

Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson is facing a fight to keep his Dutch coach Rene Meulensteen - with wealthy Qatar desperate to whisk him away.
Meulensteen is wanted by the rich Arabs as the man to run their national football team and boost them as they bid for World Cup qualification - and lifting their status before a bid to host the finals.
The highly-rated Dutchman is one of Ferguson's top aides, working beside the manager and assistant Mike Phelan. Many think he is the 'brains' of the operation.
The Qataris already know Meulensteen from his time as their youth team manager, helping some of their better players to develop before he came to Old Trafford.
Meulensteen also managed leading club sides in Qatar before Ferguson head-hunted him eight years ago as 'skills coach' - a role he revelled in and where he helped many young United players.
He left to manage Danish side Brondby but came back to Old Trafford where he is now a key figure in their push for honours - but could now be tempted away again.
The 45-year-old, who is often seen as Fergie's closest confidant on the bench, will be offered a lucrative deal by the Qataris who failed to reach the World Cup finals after a disastrous campaign.
Despite heavy investment in recent years Qatar finished below Bahrain and won just one game out of eight in their section.
Far-travelled Frenchman Bruno Metsu is in charge of the side, but the Qataris are looking at a new appointment - and for someone who can oversee the whole of their football operation.

Malcom Glazer : Akhirnya Kami Menemukan Kandidat Kuat Pengganti Sir Alex
http://soccerpitch.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2009/09/alex-ferguson.jpg

A third member of Evans family working at Man Utd
-tribalfootball.com-
The father of Manchester United defender Jonny Evans is now working as a coach with the club.
Both Jonny and Corry Evans are on the books at United and reserve-team coach Ole Gunnar Solskjaer admits their Dad is also now part of the club.
“He’s (Jonny) a great lad, he’s gone through the ranks, he’s gone through the system and he knows that you don’t just suddenly, when you go into the first team, change your character," Solskjaer told BBC Northern Ireland.
"He knows where he’s come from. He’s come from a football family, his little brother Corry plays for the reserves, he’s played for the first team of Northern Ireland as well, his dad’s a coach here so he’s got all the grounding from back home.”

Man Utd boss Ferguson sees Genoa coach Gasperini as his next No2
10.12.09 | tribalfootball.com
Genoa coach Gian Piero Gasperini is being followed by Manchester United.
Tuttosport says Gasperini has impressed United boss Sir Alex Ferguson, who has recommended the 51 year-old to chief executive David Gill as his potential successor.
Initially, Ferguson wants United to sign Gasperini as his assistant with the idea of grooming him for the top job once he retires.
Gasperini is tied to Genoa until 2012 and has transformed the club into a Serie A force since their return to the top-flight.
================================================== ============
Manchester United Tracking Genoa Coach Gian Piero Gasperini - Report
Salvatore Landolina, Goal.com
Manchester United are said to be following Genoa coach Gian Piero Gasperini with great interest with a view to signing him.
According to Tuttosport, Sir Alex Ferguson is impressed with the 51-year-old's style of football in the port city and wants him at Old Trafford as his technical assistant.
The report claims Ferguson will help guide Gasperini into becoming the full-time manager there once the Scot calls it a day. Gasperini has been followed for a while now with a number of United scouts visiting Marassi on different occasions.
It is said Fergie is particularly attracted to Gasperini's unique style of football with Genoa becoming renowned for a hard-working, yet fluent pattern of play. But luring him could be a struggle as the Italian is fully committed to Genoa with his current deal not expiring until 2012. Furthermore, Fiorentina, Napoli and Juventus have all shown an interest in him previously.
But a major offer from England could lead to him taking action and following Carlo Ancelotti to the Premier League.

The ‘unsung heroes’ behind Manchester United’s prolific Academy
Date: 17th December 2009 at 8:00 pm
http://www.footballfancast.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/article-1118102-0141B3E600000578-228_306x431-212x300.jpg
Solskjaer after a glittering career now works behind the scenes at United
Manchester United’s emphasis on the development and use of youth is nothing new. In the 50’s Joe Armstrong and Jimmy Murphy recruited and trained a set of young men that went on into the first team and under Sir Matt Busby became ‘The Busby Babes’. At the time this was a rarity as rather than develop players, teams usually just bought them but the likes of Sir Bobby Charlton, Duncan Edwards and Liam Whelan more than proved they were worthy of first team football with their outstanding talent and performances. Sadly in 1958 the dynasty was cut short after 8 of the babes were killed in the Munich air disaster.
In the early 90s another United dynasty was built under Brian Kidd and Eric Harrison, they would go on to become ‘Fergie’s Fledglings’. Consisting of Ryan Giggs, Gary and Phil Neville, Paul Scholes, Nicky Butt, Robbie Savage and Keith Gillespie amongst others whilst some would depart and forge careers elsewhere the core of the team would remain at Old Trafford and help set United on their way to a period of dominance in English football that is yet to be replicated.
United’s youth set up and scouting system is one of the most revered in football and rightly so. It has spotted as well as produced some real talents of the game that have gone on to shine not only at Old Trafford but elsewhere.
Ryan Shawcross of Stoke has so impressed at the Britannia stadium that he is being linked with a move back to Old Trafford whilst Chris Eagles is an integral part of a Burnley squad looking to stave off relegation. United’s players can be found all over the league with Frazier Campbell, Sylvan Ebanks Blake and Jonathan Greening all in the top flight whilst the likes of Giuseppe Rossi and Gerard Pique are now making their name in Spain.
So now with a new wave of talent at Old Trafford, who is responsible for what could possibly be another great United dynasty?
Previously Ricky Sbragia managed the reserve team developing the likes of Darren Fletcher and Kieran Richardson whilst Les Kershaw was the director of the academy but now there are new faces in charge of the development of United’s promising youth.
Rene Meulensteen as well as being a first team coach helps with the teaching of technical skills, he has held the position before as well as previously managing the reserves so has experience working with youngsters.
Tony Whelan is the assistant academy director and is in charge of the development of all players at United aged 9-16. He was invited to coach at United’s centre of excellence in 1990 and when the academy was established in 1998 he joined the full time staff. Having previously played for the club he has been with United for over 20 years.
The son of a Busby Babe, Paul McGuinness’ role at the club is very important as well as being assistant academy director he is in charge of the development of players aged 17-21, a vital stage in their careers. If you combine this with his position as u18 manager, then McGuinness probably has a great say in who progresses into the first team at United.
The most recognisable of United’s youth staff is current reserve manager, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. After gaining his coaching badges in 2008 Sir Alex Ferguson wasted no time in making him the reserve manager and he impressed instantly winning Manchester Senior Cup as well as the Lancashire Senior Cup and finishing second in the reserve league but it is not only his on field success that makes him a useful addition. He builds a rapport with the players making them want to perform for him as well as proving a useful figure in attracting young talent to the club.
This is team is headed by former United forward Brian McClair who has run United’s academy since 2006 following years of shadowing Les Kershaw the previous head. He is in charge of the development of over 150 kids amongst other things and travels abroad to see United’s talent based abroad. He previously managed the u19s as well as the reserve side handing the reigns over to Solskjaer.
Together this team is responsible for nurturing the talent that will look to carry on the rich tradition at the club and with players like Davide Petrucci, Reece Brown, Ryan Tuncliffe, Paul Pogba and Nick Ajose it is definitely an exciting time.

Reds appoint new Club Secretary
Manchester United has appointed John Alexander, currently Club Secretary at Tottenham Hotspur, as only its fifth Secretary since the War. He will take up the post when Ken Ramsden retires at the end of the season.
John has been the Secretary at Spurs since 2000 and before that was Club Secretary at Watford. He began his association with the game as a player with Millwall, Reading and Northampton Town, before retiring in 1982.
His appointment follows a recruitment process, announced in September 2009, which included advertisements in national newspapers which attracted many high quality applications from the world of football and beyond. John will join the Group Executive committee at the Club.
David Gill welcomed the appointment. He said: “John is the perfect candidate to succeed Ken. He is a real football man with a wealth of experience in the game. Everyone is delighted that he has accepted the chance to play a major part in the Club’s development. The Club would like to thank Spurs for their co-operation during this process, in particular agreeing to John’s early release from his contractual obligations, which allows us to ensure continuity in the post when Ken retires.”
John Alexander said: “I am honoured to be offered the chance to be the Secretary at the world’s biggest football club. I have a series of very hard acts to follow, but I am looking forward to working with Sir Alex, David Gill and the team. I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at Tottenham and leave with very happy memories. I would like to thank Daniel Levy, the Board and all my colleagues there for all the help and support I have received over the last ten seasons.”
John Alexander is only the fifth post-war Secretary at Manchester United. He follows Walter Crickmer (who filled the post from 1926-1958 but died in the Munich air disaster), Les Olive (1958-1988), Kenneth Merrett (1988-2007) and Ken Ramsden (2007-2010).

Sacked Manchester United steward claims
revolt at Old Trafford
http://www.timesonline.co.uk/multimedia/archive/00682/aaasteward_585x350_682654a.jpg
Boden lost his job after 19 years at Old Trafford after attempting to return an anti-Glazer banner that had been confiscated from supporters
The scale of the anti-Glazer movement has been laid bare with internal divisions over the Americans’ controversial ownership of Manchester United beginning to emerge.
A steward with 19 years of service at Old Trafford has been sacked for siding with the Glazer protesters. He has claimed that growing numbers of people employed by United are becoming increasingly opposed to a regime that has left the Barclays Premier League champions £716.5 million in debt.
Granville Boden, 53, was dismissed by CES, the security firm employed by United on match days, after attempting to return an anti-Glazer banner, confiscated by stewards during the league game against Burnley at Old Trafford last month, to the supporters who displayed it.
Boden said that he was appalled at the heavy-handed tactics employed by CES staff to remove the banner forcibly — and the fans responsible for it — from the Stretford End and revealed that a 20-man stand-off later ensued between those stewards sympathetic to the anti-Glazer movement and those enforcing club policy.
Although the confrontation did not descend into a fist fight, Boden said that it was reflective of the “wider internal divisions” beginning to emerge and claimed that four other stewards had been disciplined for wearing green and gold, the colours of United’s original incarnation as Newton Heath that have been adopted as a symbol of supporter opposition.
Boden also claimed that three of the club’s catering staff had been sent home for sporting green-and-gold garments, although United denied that was the case and said that one person had been told to stop wearing such attire because it contravened uniform regulations. Other supporters wearing green-and-gold scarfs and hats have been prevented from entering executive lounges until they remove the garments, although United insist that they have not issued such a directive.
Boden was sacked after removing the banner confiscated during the Burnley game from the security offices and taking it to his car with a view to returning it to its owners, only for the offending item to be seized by CES, which provides about 500 stewards on match days at Old Trafford.
Although he expressed regret that he was never asked to give his account of what happened, Boden said that he “fully accepted” the decision to dismiss him because he had defied his employers, but opted to speak out to reveal the animosity towards the Glazers among many club workers.
“There is a lot of internal conflict between the staff and I think that conflict is only going to grow as the protests against the Glazers gather more momentum,” Boden said. “There are a lot of staff at the club who are sympathetic to what the Manchester United Supporters’ Trust [MUST] are trying to achieve. I don’t regret anything I did.”
United said that the banner had to be removed against Burnley because it was concealing the scoreboard, which is also used to display messages in an emergency. They said that they did not prohibit peaceful demonstrations.
MUST has sold about 8,000 green-and-gold scarfs, although the total number purchased from all vendors is thought to be closer to 30,000.

Crewe Alex: United lure away coach Little
CREWE youth coach and former strike favourite Colin Little has been poached by Manchester United's Academy.
Little, who had been coaching the Alex's under-15s for the past three years, has been appointed assistant coach of United's under-13s side.
The move also signals the end of the 37-year-old's non-league career with Altrincham, for whom he scored 112 goals in the Blue Square Premier.
Crewe boss Dario Gradi encouraged Little, a member of the Alex's 1997 Second Division play-off winning team, to begin coaching.
Gradi said: "He's left to go to Manchester United, of all the clubs to go to, as a Manchester City fan.
"He plays seven-a-side football with Brian McClair, and they'd been after him for a while."
Little said: "Dario's kept chipping away at me to devote more time to the coaching, and while it's a step down in a way, United don't come calling every day.
"Getting a foot on the ladder was too good to miss, and leaving Alty and Crewe was the price I've had to pay."

Boss hails backroom staff
Sir Alex Ferguson has praised the unsung heroes of United's backroom team in dealing with a campaign that conjured its fair share of challenges to coaches and medical staff alike.
The Reds had 16 first-team players who were injured for six weeks or more throughout the 2009/10 campaign, but Sir Alex says his dedicated staff dealt with the crisis in the most professional manner he could have asked for.
"I can be proud of my medical staff and my coaching staff for the experience they’ve shown and the way they’ve dealt with the injury situation," the boss told ManUtd.com. "No matter what team we’ve put on the pitch, they’ve always been well prepared and always well motivated.
"The training sessions have always been of the high standard we look for at this club. Those things are vital in a club like ours when you’re facing situations where there are injuries time and time again."
It is remarkable that United took the title race down to the wire and ended the season with the league's tightest defence when nine players in defensive positions spent prolonged spells on the sidelines.
"You need experience to cope with that and the medical staff, coaching staff and myself have got that experience," added the boss. "We always believe that if we’ve got eleven bodies to put on the pitch, we can always win, no matter who they are. I think that’s a great testimony to the standard here."

Casper In As Man Utd Youth Guru
grimsby.vitalfootball.co.uk
Chris Casper will return to where it all began this week and take up the rains as youth coach at Manchester United. Having been part of that famous youth side including, Paul Scholes, the Neville`s and David Beckham, the son of Burnley's legendary striker Frank Casper, left Grimsby today.
Chris, who made two appearances for United, was a cultured defender who was robbed of his career at just 24 whilst playing for Reading against Cardiff. The horrific injury resulted in a show trial that netted Chris a million in damages.
Good luck Chris and thanks..... and if any of your young chargelings need some match practice you know the number.

From making up Bobby Charlton and Denis Law’s wages in little brown envelopes, to arranging an Old Trafford Champions League final.
From emergency teenager turnstile operator and toilet roll checker, to co-ordinating United’s smoothly-run, emotional Munich commemorations.
From watching United on a homemade fold-up stool, to travelling the world and staying in five-star hotels.
Ken Ramsden went from office junior to ticket office manager, programme editor, press officer, assistant secretary through the ranks to club secretary.
But, after 50 years, Ramsden’s Manchester United journey is over and the Ordsall-born son of a Salford foundry worker and an Old Trafford laundry lady has retired.
It has been an adventure that took Ramsden from the austerity of United in 1960, when he had to buy the club’s office furniture from a second hand shop in Withy Grove, to the modern-day Reds, valued at over a billion pounds.
I spent part of Ken’s last day in his plush, spacious office at United’s Carrington training base. It is a far cry from those early days when the awkward 15-year-old didn’t even have his own desk.
Mind you, he did start off in the Old Trafford boardroom!
“It was only used once a month for board meetings so I was handed a chair and plonked at one end of the table. The wages manager was at the other,” recalled Ken.
Ramsden had had designs on being a printer, but was rejected because of poor eyesight.
His mother and auntie (Omo and Daz) were laundry ladies at Old Trafford. The pair had suffered the tragic job of washing the Busby Babes’ kit one week, then polishing their coffins the next following the Munich tragedy. United’s post-Munich secretary was Les Olive, who lived in the same street as Reds fans the Ramsdens. When Olive heard that young Ken was looking for work he asked if he fancied an office job at the stadium.
Once it was rubber-stamped by Matt Busby and passed at a board meeting, his 50-year voyage kicked off at two pounds, three shillings a week.
“One of the first things Les Olive ever said to me was, ‘Don’t ever let me hear you say that is not my job because whatever you are asked to do is your job’. It was a good lesson.
“Les himself would go round on a matchday and check that all the toilets had paper or the lightbulbs worked. We helped and you’d go round all the turnstiles reading the meters.
Induction
“In my first season we played a night game against Everton and I was helping out in the cash office and we were gatemen short and I was sent out at 15 years of age to operate one. I had been through many times but never worked one. I got a quick induction on which pedal to press.
“In those early days when the weather was bad we could get a call on a Sunday afternoon to come in and put the sheets down to protect the pitch.
“I did the payroll and book-keeping. The maximum wage was in operation when I came. We paid the players weekly in cash.
“On a Thursday morning we went to the bank and then made up their wages in individual brown envelopes. Bobby Charlton, Denis Law they all got it the same way. Even in the summer they still came in for their wages because their wives needed the housekeeping!
“It makes you appreciate the differences. People who have come into the game in the last 10-15 years think it was always like it is now. But it wasn’t. The club was really poor in those days. If we had an adding machine we thought we were doing well! Hours were long when I moved into the ticket office and when we were busy for say, cup finals, stewards would volunteer for the price of a cup of tea and a butty to come in and help.
“You look at changes like European football. In 1968 the European Cup at Wembley against Benfica was purely and simply a football match. Now the Champions League is a circus. It is a fantastic circus and wonderful to be part of it, but it is a circus.”
Ramsden began his United career during the Busby era and ended it during Sir Alex Ferguson’s golden period.
He believes the two Scots epitomise what he hopes is how the football worldview of Manchester United.
“Fergie and Busby are both very humble men,” Ken added.
“I really, really think that United is a humble club. I know there are those outside who think there is an arrogance about the club but I truly don’t think that is the case.
“This club spends a huge amount of time considering the needs of supporters and considering what is the right thing to do and the best way to do it.
“When we work in Europe the people who want to talk to me because I am from Manchester United is incredible. They want to be with someone who is from the club. That is a very humbling experience.

“My background is such that you don’t try and give the impression of arrogance. There are clubs who are seen as arrogant and I have fought tooth and nail to make sure United are not looked on in that way.
“People may not like us but I would hate to think they thought we think we are better than we are. I don’t think it is an accusation that could be levelled at us. To have worked at the club during the two lengthy periods of success is great and to work for two such men has been a wonderful experience.
“Sir Matt was fantastic. I was only a boy at the time and he would phone me up and he’d tell me to bring the tickets over to his office.
“I never needed to knock because my knees did it for me! I was absolutely terrified of him because of who he was. But he was a man who looked after the laundry ladies and tea ladies. He made everybody feel important.
“He had this knack, and I have watched him in action, of speaking to someone who he might not have met say for 20 years and they were convinced he remembered them. It made them ten foot tall. He got everyone on his side.
“He was also a psychologist long before there was psychology in sport. There was once a European game and our full- back Tony Dunne was in the treatment room. Tony was never usually injured. But he was having treatment from Ted Dalton. The boss asked Ted how Tony was and Ted replied that he had no chance.
“The boss then went over to Tony and said to Tony “I know you won’t let me down son” and he walked out! Tony played the next match! Sir Matt had that way. He was very, very clever. He knew people and got the best out of them.”
Fergie’s arrival in 1986 wasn’t immediately successful but Ramsden prayed he would navigate the rough waters.
“When Alex came the thing I admired most was that I always felt he was planning beyond his own time. He was sowing for others to reap.
“He was looking at young players from 12 upwards and those boys wouldn’t get to the first team until seven or eight years. The likelihood was that it was a bit remote he might still be in charge then given how managers came and went even then. Obviously he wanted to stick around but it wasn’t likely. The fact he was planning for someone else’s benefit had an enormous impact on me on what he was really about. It wasn’t about him it was about the club.
“There was a desperation for him to do well because very quickly everyone at the club saw what he was like and his honesty and hard work.
“He wanted the best for the club. Previous managers had just looked after the first team. That was the bread and butter but Alex knew better. He looked deeper. He made sure everything from the very bottom was sorted and he re-jigged and put things right and everything flowed from there.
“I am so pleased he saw the fruits of his labours.”
As a fan Ken’s best memories are of the 1999 Treble season, but as an employee he has other highlights.
Fantastic
“I was heavily involved in delivering the Champions League final here at Old Trafford in 2003. It was a fantastic operation and something we were all extremely proud of,” he added.
“Then there was the occasion after Sir Matt died and we played Everton. We were debating what we should do as a club and there is no manual that tells you want to do.
“We had DJ Keith Fane at the time at Old Trafford who rang me on the Friday before the game and said he had an idea. He was very creative and suggested we got a piper to lead the teams out.
“I said no way because it was too twee but he insisted it would work. I believed him and went with it and oh boy did it work. There is an invisible mark you have to hit and you don’t know how you hit it, but when you do you know. We were so pleased.
“It was the same for the 50th anniversary of Munich in 2008. I was so pleased to be secretary at that time. It was a lot of work but it was a lifetime love for me to try and do my best for the club and do the best for the families. It was challenging but I think we pulled that off as well. It was a very proud moment especially because of my mum and auntie’s connection with the club at the time of Munich.”
The Ramsden name will live on at Old Trafford with his son David who is an Old Trafford Museum Guide. He was born hours after Ken and his wife had attended a United reserve night match!
“It has been an incredibly demanding career, but a real labour of love.”

Swedish great Andersson thrilled to join Man Utd
Patrick Andersson has joined Manchester United.
Andersson spoke of his delight at being named Manchester United's Scandinavian scout.
The former Blackburn defender will recommend the cream of the region's talent to Sir Alex Ferguson after initial contact was made back in April.
"It's very exciting," he said. "I'll also get the chance to broaden my own network.
"Sweden will be my base. It's intended that I will give a second opinion on referrals, not only on a first-team basis but also on recruitment further down the age groups."
Andersson, 39, won 105 caps for Sweden and also represented the likes of Bayern Munich and Barcelona.

Manchester United youth academy players will be treated when retired defender Gary Neville begins his coaching career this week.
The 35-year old former club captain pulled the pin on his playing career earlier this month and is immediately trying his hand at coaching by getting involved with Warren Joyce's reserves and Paul McGuinness' youth team.
Neville has already been linked with the Red Devils' reserves job for next year as he goes about the next phase of his footballing life.
