There have been plenty of pretenders to Peter Schmeichel’s throne since his abdication in 1999. But few have graced the number 1 jersey with such quality and consistency as Edwin van der Sar.

The two differ in style. Schmeichel was famed for bellowing at his back four as well as his brilliant saves. Edwin, however, uses his experience and calm assurance to great effect.

Edwin has all the wisdom and know-how between the sticks that you would expect of a goalkeeper that is his nation’s most-capped player and a former UEFA Cup (1992) and Champions League (1995) winner with his first club Ajax in
the early nineties. He also won four league titles and three domestic cups with the Amsterdam outfit, before spending two seasons in Serie A with Juventus.

Gianlugi Buffon’s arrival at the Stadio delle Alpi resulted in van der Sar's £5million switch to Fulham in 2001 at the outset of the Londoners’ Premier League adventure, but after four seasons at Craven Cottage United came knocking.

Van der Sar was 34 when he arrived at Old Trafford in 2005 but old father time has dulled neither his ambition nor his influence. Age is not a problem, far from it. He kept an incredible 24 clean sheets in all competitions in 2007/08 as the Reds retained the Premier League title and won the Champions League for the first time since Schmeichel departed after the '99 final. His penalty save from Nicolas Anelka in the 2008 final in Moscow is forever etched in United history.

Even better form was to come in 2008/09 when Edwin played 1,311 minutes in the league without conceding a goal - between Nasri's strike for Arsenal on 8 November 2008 and Peter Lovenkrands' opener for Newcastle on 4 March 2009. This remarkable feat set a new standard for English, British and European football - with some reports labelling it a world
record for a single season.

Edwin's United deal was extended in December 2008 to keep him at Old Trafford for one last season, 2009/10. In that same month, he helped the Reds to win the FIFA Club World Cup in Japan.

While Ben Foster and Tomasz Kuszczak waited in the wings for their chance, Edwin's experience kept him in pole position for League and Champions League fixtures. In April 2009, he was effectively named best goalkeeper in the Barclays Premier League when his fellow professionals voted him into the PFA Team of the Year.

Van der Sar mulai berkarir sebagai pemain sepak bola dari klub Foreholte dan VV Noordwijk, kemudian dia menarik minat klub Ajax Amsterdam. Edwin named top stopper

Edwin van der Sar was named UEFA Club Goalkeeper of the Year following his Champions League exploits last season, and Sir Alex Ferguson described the Dutchman's dedication to remaining at the top of the game as "absolutely unbelievable."

The veteran stopper, who kept seven clean sheets in Europe last term, fought off competition from Chelsea's Petr Cech and Barcelona's Victor Valdes to scoop the goalkeeper gong. He was presented with his award in Monaco prior to the draw for this season's group stages.

"The award couldn't have gone to a better professional," Sir Alex told ManUtd.com. "Edwin's dedication to football in the last few years has been absolutely unbelievable.

"It's an award that is thorougly deserved and I think everyone in football will applaud that."

Meanwhile, Nemanja Vidic lost out to John Terry in the UEFA Club Defender of the Year category, while Lionel Messi pipped former Red Cristiano Ronaldo in the UEFA Club Forward of the Year nominations.

Sebelum join ke United dia udah mau pensiun kan ya? Uda merasa ga bisa berkembang lagi, ternyata kembali si Opa ini matanya sakti, dari yang uda mau pensiun n ga terlalu kedengeran kiprah nya di fulham, sekarang jadi keeper terbaik Eropa dong :thumbup:

Baru baca berita ini disini nih... Mantap banget dah, di umur 38 tahun jadi kiper terbaik liga Champions mengalahkan kiper laen yang lebih muda. Meski di dukung bek-bek yang tangguh tapi tetep aja kualitas VDS nggak bisa diragukan. Selamat buat pakde VDS... moga akhir musim ini prestasinya diulang plus tambahan trofi juara UCL 2009/2010.

Gw inget dulu pas jaman masih SMU pernah baca artikel tabloid BOLA klo petinggi Juventus meragukan kemampuan Van Der Saar membela Juve karena sering kebobolan gol di Serie-A saat itu. Konon ada masalah penglihatan dengan VDS jadi gak bisa konsentrasi kalau ada serangan lawan, kasian banget yach diberitakan begitu... Ada yg inget dgn artikel itu ? Hehehe... Toh nyatanya setelah beberapa musim di MU masalah penglihatannya tidak terbukti...

MANCHESTER, KOMPAS.com - Absennya Edwin van der Sar membuat Manchester United kesulitan menjaga keperawanan gawangnya. Mantan kiper MU, Peter Schmeichel, menegaskan bahwa "Setan Merah" masih memerlukan Van der Sar sebagai kiper utama mereka.

Sejak awal musim ini, Van der Sar selalu absen dalam setiap laga MU akibat cedera pada ibu jari tangannya. Penggantinya adalah kiper binaan klub, Ben Foster. Sebagai cadangan, pelatih Sir Alex Ferguson menunjuk Tomasz Kuszczak.

Foster, 26 tahun, saat ini menjadi salah satu kiper timnas Inggris. Adapun Kuszczak (27) merupakan kiper utama timnas Polandia. Namun, itu tak menjamin keduanya bisa menggeser Van der Sar, yang kini berusia 38 tahun.

Foster yang lebih banyak dimainkan sebagai kiper utama MU saat ini malah membuat kesalahan fatal dalam laga versus Manchester City, Minggu (20/9). Blunder itu membuat Gareth Barry berhasil menyamakan skor di babak pertama. Sebelumnya, Foster juga gagal mengantisipasi tendangan dari luar kotak penalti oleh pemain Arsenal, Andrey Arshavin.

Schmeichel tidak mengkritik penampilan Foster itu. Meski demikian, ia tetap mengunggulkan Van der Sar sebagai pemain terbaik di bawah mistar MU.

"Ben Foster bekerja baik musim ini dan dia jelas-jelas memperlihatkan diri sebagai kiper yang sangat baik," katanya kepada United Review. "Namun, aku yakin Edwin bakal kembali ketika dia pulih karena manajer (Ferguson) tahu dialah orang yang tepat untuk tim saat ini."

"Kurasa Edwin dapat tetap bermain hingga beberapa tahun mendatang. Dia fit, kuat, dan termotivasi," tambahnya. "Secara fisik, itu tak mengganggu Edwin untuk terus berkarier dan jika dia ingin, dia akan mengambil peluang."

Schmeichel sendiri pernah menjadi kiper utama MU dan menjadi legenda hidup Old Trafford. Ia selalu memenangkan penghargaan kiper terbaik tingkat Eropa selama delapan tahun bersama "The Red Devils" sejak 1991. Ia akhirnya mundur dari MU setelah meraih tiga gelar pada 1999. Van der Sar baru masuk ke MU pada 2005.

Dengan usia yang sudah 38 tahun sesungguhnya tak salah jika Van Der Sar mulai merencanakan masa pensiun. Apalagi, sebagai pesepakbola dia hampir meraih segalanya di level klub, yang dimulai dari Belanda dan berlanjut ke Italia dan Inggris.

Soal rencana pensiun kiper terbaiknya itu, Sir Alex Ferguson sempat menyayangkan. Fergie jelas layak khawatir lantaran 'Setan Merah' kini tak punya kiper pelapis sekelas Van der Sar, Ben Foster yang disepanjang awal musim ini jadi tumpuan utama dianggap masih jauh dari memuaskan.

Meski sempat menyatakan akan menjadikan musim ini sebagai tahun terakhirnya mengawal gawang MU, Van der Sar justru membuka kembali peluang dirinya menambah kontrak. Menyatakan akan pensiun namun kemudian malah memperpanjang kontrak sempat dilakukan kiper berpaspor Belanda itu di tahun 2006 lalu.

"Dalam beberapa tahun saya pernah bilang kalau itu akan menjadi musim terakhir saya. Enam bulan sebelum kontrak habis di Desember 2006 kami memperpanjang kontrak untuk satu tahun dan kondisinya selalu sama di setiap tahun," ungkap Van der Sar di Dailymail.

Beberapa hal yang menjadi pertimbangan Van der Sar untuk membatalkan rencana pensiunnya di akhir musim nanti adalah munculnya motivasi dalam dirinya sendiri. Meski tak bisa memungkiri usianya yang terus beranjak tua, mantan kiper Juventus dan Ajax Amsterdam itu mengaku masih punya kondisi fisik seperti beberapa tahun lalu.

"Saya menunggu setiap musim untuk melihat di mana posisi saya, jika semua orang senang dan saya masih termotivasi saya bisa lanjut. Tapi saya juga tahu saya terus bertambah tua, kemungkinan musim ini akan menjadi yang terakhir busat saya terus menguat."

"Desember nanti semuanya akan jelas. Saat ini saya akan membuat penyataan. Itu dilema yang luar biasa. Di sisi lain saya masih dalam kondisi baik, sama masih merasa seperti beberapa tahun lalu," pungkas dia pesepakbola yang dibeli The Red Devils dari Fulham pada tahun 2005 lalu itu.

Edwin van der Sar, kiper utama Manchester United, mengungkapkan dirinya tidak ingin segera pensiun sebelum memenangkan tropi Liga Champions untuk kali ketiga.

Pemain yang kini baru saja dilaporkan pulih dari cedera jari yang dialaminya saat tampil pada laga pra-musim, sepanjang musim ini masih belum bermain untuk klub berjuluk Setan Merah. Namun dia menegaskan, tak ada dibenaknya untuk pensiun dini.

"Saya tak ingin mengepaknya sekarang. Di akhir dari liburan musim panas saya kemarin, saya sudah merasa gatal saja untuk segera kembali ke tempat latihan," katanya kepada Sunday Mirror.

"Saat ini saya mempunyai kehausan untuk memenangkan Liga Champions lagi. Saya tak peduli dengan yang sudah saya menangkan sebelumnya."

Ya, cepat atau lambat VDS akan meninggalkan United seiring usianya yg semakin tua dan kondisi cedera jarinya.
Dengan demikian United harus secepatnya mengambil keputusan untuk mempromosikan 2 pelapis VDS ataukah membeli Kiper baru, Akinvev saya rasa bisa menjadi salah satu pilihan jika memang perlu pembelian pemain baru.
Namun demikian semoga cepat sembuh jarinya ya Om Menir. :)

Edwin van der Sar starts for the Reserves at Everton on Tuesday evening, as he prepares for his first competitive action of the season.

The veteran Dutch goalkeeper has been out of action since breaking his hand in August's pre-season penalty shootout against Bayern Munich, but is ready to return after training over recent weeks.

Tuesday's trip to the Stobart Stadium, Halton in Widnes will be shown live on MUTV. Coverage begins at 18:30 BST, half an hour before kick-off.

Edwin is the highest-profile member of the Reserves squad chosen by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Warren Joyce, although there are other members who can boast first team experience.

A back four consisting of Fabio, Corry Evans, Oliver Gill and Joe Dudgeon sits behind a midfield of Oliver Norwood, Matty James, Magnus Eikrem and Robbie Brady.

Manchester United goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar came through an uneventful 90 minutes in the club's reserve-team win over Everton on Tuesday night.

The 38-year-old Dutchman, who has been out of action since breaking his hand during United's pre-season match with Bayern Munich, was on the pitch for the entirety of the 1-0 win.

Van der Sar showed no discomfort during the game, comfortably keeping a clean sheet while Italian striker Federico Macheda scored the decisive goal at the other end.

Saat ini, MU berada di peringkat kedua dengan 19 poin atau berselisih dua angka dari Chelsea di peringkat pertama. Itu merupakan akibat dua kegagalan MU meraih poin penuh ketika tumbang 0-1 dari Burnley, Rabu (19/8) dan imbang 2-2 dengan Sunderland, Sabtu (3/10).

Sekarang, kami harus melaju tanpa kehilangan (poin penuh) lagi. Kami harus kembali ke bisnis, melupakan hasil imbang akhir pekan lalu dan mulai meraih hasil positif lagi," ujarnya.

Edwin van der Sar is backing Ben Foster to recover from his current problems, but warned his team-mate he also intends to take back his Manchester United place between the posts.

Foster has endured a turbulent few weeks, being blamed for two Manchester City goals in the thrilling Old Trafford derby last month before being brushed aside far too easily by Sunderland's Kenwyne Jones last weekend.

A chest problem then prevented him joining England on international duty this week, and with speculation mounting that Sir Alex Ferguson will launch a £10million raid on CSKA Moscow for Igor Akinfeev if Van der Sar calls it a day at the end of the season, Foster's Red Devils career appears to be under threat.

However, Van der Sar can offer some words of comfort.

Although the 38-year-old has enjoyed a stellar career, featuring a Champions League win as a youngster with Ajax before his second such success with Manchester United in 2008, the Dutchman had to learn the hard way too.

'Nobody has a clear path in their career,' Van der Sar told the Manchester Evening News.

'You go up and down. You just have to make sure that the downs are not as deep as the ones you go up.

'I had similar things when I was young. That is what makes you the man and the player you become as a goalkeeper.

'Ben certainly has the strength of character to overcome what he has been through. How he deals with it will shape the player he will be.

After a successful reserve team comeback against Everton on Tuesday, Van der Sar is in line for a recall when United entertain Bolton next Saturday in a match that must be won just eight days before the blockbuster showdown with Liverpool at Anfield.

Sitting on the sidelines since breaking two fingers during a pre-season encounter with Bayern Munich has been a frustrating experience for a player who will celebrate his 39th birthday later this month.

Van der Sar knows the end of his career is approaching, even though he will not make a decision about his short-term future until later this year, and he does not want to miss any more action.

Penjaga gawang asal Belanda ini menderita cedera sejak pra-musim dan posisinya digantikan oleh Ben Foster yang sementara ini menjadi pilihan utama Sir Alex Ferguson.

Meskipun sempat tampil bagus di beberapa pertandingan awal, performa Foster menunjukkan grafik menurun dan kurang konsisten.

Bukan kebetulan kalau menurunnya penampilan kiper asal Inggris itu bersamaan dengan pulihnya kondisi Van der Sar atau VDS.

Mantan kiper Fulham dan Juventus itu sebelumnya diperkirakan baru bisa kembali merumput pada awal November mendatang. Namun ternyata VDS sudah mulai pulih dan siap kembali beraksi.

VDS sudah bermain memperkuat tim cadangan MU pada pekan lalu dan merasakan kondisinya sudah sangat baik.

United’s defence may have been breached on Edwin van der Sar’s return to first-team action, but the Dutch stopper enjoyed his first run-out of the season.

“When you come back you always want to keep a clean sheet,” he admitted. “But the most important thing is the three points and we hung on today and deserved the win. I enjoyed the game and it was good to get another victory.”

Van der Sar’s goalmouth came under intense pressure in the closing stages, as Bolton threw everything at the Reds. But the 38-year-old stopper says the game should have been put to bed long before Matthew Taylor’s goal gave the visitors hope of snatching a point.

“For long periods we were the better team and created the most chances,” he told MUTV. “Jussi Jaaskelainen played spectacularly again and pulled off some fantastic saves.

“At 2-0 the game wasn’t over and Bolton scored a scrappy goal – we didn’t defend well on that one. We didn’t panic but the game should have been done and dusted. Instead, we were left to fight to hold onto the lead. We had to dig a bit deeper than we maybe expected after 50 or 60 minutes.”

Van der Sar is expected to keep his place in goal for United’s trip to Russia on Wednesday, where he hopes to keep CSKA Moscow at bay in the Luzhniki Stadium. Also key to that will be Rio Ferdinand, who’s come under fire from some quarters after recent errors. But van der Sar is backing the England international to regain his finest form.

“Rio’s a strong character and an excellent player. Of course sometimes you go through a bad patch but that doesn’t affect Rio. He and I have to make sure we get that good understanding back that we had last year and I’m sure we’ll be solid again.”

"My main aim has been to get fit," he said.
"I had an operation on my fingers in the summer and it took a while before I could even catch a ball again.
"The moment you are able to get out and start training again is like a release. That is the thing you like to do most.
"It has been hard not having that, which is why I am not looking any further ahead than playing and enjoying myself."

Ferguson will be relying on Van der Sar's experience this week, with United facing a testing Champions League away trip to CSKA Moscow followed by the annual blockbuster with Liverpool at Anfield, a game Rafael Benitez's side must win following their beach-ball nightmare at Sunderland that leaves their title dreams on the brink of going pop.

Before that, Ferguson will find out whether he will be charged over his ill-judged comments about Alan Wiley two weeks ago.

Despite Ferguson's apology, which was followed up by further contrite comments in his programme notes yesterday, it is impossible to believe such a damning assessment of Wiley's fitness - including a claim he took longer than required to book players because he needed a rest - will not warrant direct action from the FA, which will involve either a heavy fine or a touchline ban.

Not that Van der Sar will be getting too flustered. He is more bothered about rediscovering the defensive solidity that brought United a Premier League record 14 successive clean sheets last season. In contrast, the Red Devils have only managed three this term, with Ferguson admitting Rio Ferdinand is in his worst run of form since arriving at Old Trafford in 2002. There were signs of improvement yesterday, with Van der Sar confident Ferdinand will soon rediscover top form.

"Rio is a strong character and an excellent player," Van der Sar said.
"Of course sometimes you go through a bad patch. But I know for sure it won't affect him.
"As a defensive unit we have to make sure we get the understanding back from last year. Then we will be solid at the back again."

It looked for a long time that Van der Sar's return would coincide with another clean sheet.

Zat Knight's fifth-minute own goal and Antonio Valencia's first since a £17million summer move from Wigan were scant reward for United's dominance in the opening hour. But a combination of their own profligacy and Jussi Jaaskelainen's excellent goalkeeping kept Bolton within touching distance.

Matt Taylor's header was the prelude to a nerve-jangling last 15 minutes which ultimately, United were fortunate to survive. Nevertheless, with Chelsea and Liverpool both losing, it represented a decent weekend in what shapes up to be a very intriguing campaign as United go for an unprecedented four titles in a row.

"It is important to get three points when the other teams drop them. It makes a difference," said Van der Sar.
"It is going to be tough for everyone this season. We didn't play well against Sunderland a couple of weeks ago but at least we managed to get a draw.
"All we can do is keep going. We are top now and we have to try to make the gap as big as possible."

Sir Alex Ferguson has paid tribute to goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar and said he is as good as Peter Schmeichel.

Van der Sar celebrated his 39th birthday on Thursday and Ferguson believes there is a more to come from the Dutchman.

"We are lucky to have such a great goalkeeper in the tradition of Peter Schmeichel, " he told United Review.

"I have always rated Schmeichel as the best goalkeeper in the world but I think now Edwin is right up there with him. I cannot seperate them in terms of who who is better.

"Edwin is such a great example of what can be achieved and how long you can last in the game if you keep the light of enthusiasm and ambition inside you.

"He is one of those players who has lived his life the right way. He celebrated his 39th birthday a couple of days ago and is as good as ever.

"How much longer can he carry on ? That is up to Edwin. He has earned the right to decide for himself without any pressure or persuasion for me. We will leave it up to him."

Schmeichel enjoyed a marvellous career at Old Trafford helping the club win five titles and the European Cup.

The 39-year-old Dutchman is expected to make a decision about his future at the Premier League champions in December, and although there will be an option to extend his current deal and therefore prolong his status as the club’s undisputed number one, Ferguson is adamant his successor is already at Old Trafford.

“He has come back from his recent injury well.”

The wife of Manchester United goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar is seriously ill after a stroke.

Van der Sar is at his wife Annmarie van Kesteren’s hospital bedside in Holland awaiting test results.

Sportsmail understands Annmarie collapsed at home last Wednesday as Van der Sar and the couple’s two children, Joe and Lynn, were preparing to celebrate Christmas.

Out of action in recent weeks with a knee injury, Van der Sar had been given permission by United boss Sir Alex Ferguson to return to his homeland for the festive period and to receive treatment from the Holland team doctor.

The 39-year-old former international is not expected back in Manchester until more is known about his wife’s condition.

Van der Sar is United’s No 1 and has been considering an offer to stay at the club for another season.

Van der Sar had been put on indefinite leave following his wife's collapse and it is understood that she has made a good recovery with no long term effects.

The 39-year-old has been back in Holland for the festive season and also received treatment on a knee injury that has kept him out since November.

Since then, his wife Annemarie suffered a stroke just before Christmas.

However, she has now recovered and, after spending this week in Qatar with his team-mates during a warm weather training camp, the 39-year-old is in contention to face Burnley at Old Trafford.

"Edwin has come back to training and has done very well," said manager Sir Alex Ferguson.

"He has been out for a few weeks and it is great to see him back. He will give us so much experience when he eventually does come back, which is important to us."

Ferguson will have a chat with Van der Sar before deciding on his line-up for Saturday's game.

However, it seems inevitable given United's struggles at the back recently that the former Holland skipper will be recalled in favour of Tomasz Kuszczak.

"It depends how Edwin feels but he has been training very well," said Ferguson.

Ferguson also confirmed long-term absentees Rio Ferdinand and Owen Hargreaves continued to make progress in Qatar last week.

"They both took part in some work and Rio in particular is not too far away now," he said.

Meanwhile, record signing Dimitar Berbatov is resisting having an exploratory operation on a lingering knee problem, with Ferguson hoping surgery can be delayed until the end of the season.

"Dimitar doesn't want an operation," said Ferguson.

"Sometimes he feels the injury, other times he doesn't.

"It might have been the warmer climes but he didn't feel it at all in Qatar last week.

"We are just keeping an eye on it at present.

The post-war record has been held by another Dutch goalkeeper, Raimond van der Gouw, since his last game for the club against Charlton Athletic in May 2002 when he was 39 years and 48 days.

Edwin van der Sar was delighted to be back on the pitch on Saturday after missing United’s last 12 fixtures.

A combination of injury and personal misfortune – the Dutchman’s wife suffered a brain haemorrhage just before Christmas – has kept van der Sar on the sidelines since 21 November, but he returned to Sir Alex’s starting XI against Burnley and kept a clean sheet.

“It’s good to be back,” he told MUTV. “I felt pretty good out there, although I was a bit nervous before the game.”

Van der Sar rejoined his team-mates for last week’s warm-weather training camp in Qatar, where he says “some good training sessions” helped the Reds prepare for Burnley’s first visit to Old Trafford in 25 years.

“It’s been a good week for myself and the team. We had some good training sessions in Qatar and now we’ve topped it off with a win against Burnley.

“Burnley are a resilient side and they’ve shown that all season. They were a big challenge for us and I had to make a couple of saves, but we hung on.”

The win keeps the Reds just one point off the top of the table, behind Chelsea, who beat Sunderland 7-2 at Stamford Bridge on Saturday.

“We were trailing Chelsea by a point [at kick-off] so it was important to win and stay close to the leaders,” van der Sar said. “That’s what we did so hopefully now we can go from strength to strength.

“We’ve got a few players coming back from injury as we come to the business end of the season.”

Manchester - Edwin Van der Sar tidak terlalu khawair dalam persaingan gelar Premier League. Kiper Manchester United ini yakin pengalaman skuadnya akan membantu mereka mempertahankan gelar.

MU saat ini sedang mengejar rekor bisa mempertahkan titel Premier League untuk empat kali berturut-turut. Pasukan Alex Ferguson ini juga punya kesempatan untuk memimpin klasemen jika menang atas Portsmouth, Sabtu (6/2/2010).

Sedangkan Arsenal akan menghadapi pimpinan klasemen sementara Chelsea di Stamford Bridge 24 jam ke depan. Van der Sar pun yakin bahwa MU dapat meneruskan kemenangan mereka atas Arsenal dan menggeser Chelsea.

"Pengalaman tentu saja akan sangat membantu. Anda pernah berada di sana sebelumnya, persempit jarak dan harus memenangi pertandingan. Anda tahu bagaimana menangani mereka," ungkap Van der Sar seperti dilansir Espn.

"Ada saatnya dalam karir Anda dimana akan klik dan Anda berpikir. Anda pernah berada di situasi ini sebelumnya, saya tahu apa yang harus dilakukan, saya tahu apa yang diharapkan. Kadang itu berguna," kata kiper asal Belanda ini.

Meski demikian skuad MU khususnya lini belakang tidak dapat tampil dengan kekuatan penuh saat menghadapi Portsmouth. Rio Ferdinand terkena sanksi dan Nemaja Vidic cedera dan membuat Fergie untuk melakukan perubahan.

Namun, bagi Van der Sar itu tidak terlalu mengganggu skuadnya. "Secara umum, kami cenderung dilatih dengan cara yang sama dan bermain dengan sistem yang sama. Akan tetapi setiap pemain punya karakteristik masing-masing," ujarnya.

Manchester United are set to offer goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar a new one-year contract to extend his stay for at least another season.

The 39-year-old, whose rolling contract is up in the summer, is reportedly thinking of quitting the game at the end of the campaign.

Van der Sar's season has been severely disrupted by injury while he was also granted time off because his wife was ill.

Despite making just 13 appearances in all competitions for the Reds, United boss Sir Alex Ferguson is keen to keep the Dutchman for at least another year and plans to offer him a new, lucrative deal to ensure he remains at Old Trafford until 2011.

Manchester - Manchester United masih memiliki waktu untuk mencari suksesor Edwin Van der Sar. Diberitakan kiper berkebangsaan Belanda itu sudah setuju dengan kontrak yang ditawarkan klub.

Hingga kini, MU belum juga mendapatkan calon pengganti Van der Sar. Meskipun, dia masih menunjukkan penampilan yang apik namun kiper yang bersinar bersama Ajax Amsterdam tersebut kini sudah rentan cedera dan merencanakan untuk segera pensiun.

Akan tetapi, setidaknya The Red Devils masih memiliki waktu setahun untuk mencari kiper yang cocok. Berdasar laporan dari Daily Mail, Van der Sar dikabarkan setuju untuk memperpanjang kontraknya di Old Trafford selama satu tahun ke depan dengan nilai sekitar lima juta poundsterling.

Selain Van der Sar, MU tidak memiliki kiper yang cukup mumpuni. Bahkan skuad arahan Sir Alex Ferguson ini akan kehilangan salah satu kipernya menyusul rencana akan dijualnya Ben Foster pada bursa musim panas mendatang.

Mungkin sebaiknya Ben Foster tidak perlu dijual namun cukup dipinjamkan dulu ke klub lain untuk mengasah kemampuannya selama Van der Sar masih memperkuat MU. Jika tiba saatnya Van der Sar pensiun, Tomaz Kuszczak menjadi kiper utama dan Ben Foster menjadi kiper kedua. Keduanya nanti bisa dipasang bergantian dalam event yang berbeda seperti Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup serta Carling Cup.

Manchester - Tak bisa dipungkiri bahwa di usianya yang sekarang Edwin van der Sar tetap merupakan salah satu kiper terbaik Belanda. Meski berpeluang mendapat posisi inti di Piala Dunia, dia tetap kekeuh dengan keputusan pensiunnya dari ajang internasional.

Van der Sar memutuskan untuk mundur dari timnas Belanda seusai Euro 2008. Kiper yang tahun ini akan berusia 40 tahun tersebut menyudahi 13 tahun petualangannya di ajang internasional.

Keputusan mundurnya itu semata-mata karena kondisi fisiknya yang sudah menua, bukan karena performanya yang menurun atau kehilangan tempat inti di skuad Belanda.

Buktinya, pemain bertinggi 1,97 meter ini tetap mampu bermain secara reguler di tim seelit Manchester United sejak 2005. Dalam periode itu dia tiga kali mengankat trofi Liga Inggris dan sekali meraih titel Liga Champions.

Meski sempat absen selama beberapa pekan karena cedera dan istrinya yang mengalami pendarahan, Van der Sar juga tetap bercokol di tempat utama pada musim ini. Dia tercatat telah melakukan 30 penyelamatan dan lima kali clean sheet.

Dengan penampilannya yang sebaik itu, pelatih Belanda, Bert van Marwijk pun tentu berharap Van der Sar dapat terlibat di Afrika Selatan pada musim panas nanti. Apalagi jika mengingat kiper Belanda lainnya macam Maarten Stekelenburg, Michel Vorm, dan Piet Velthuizen masih berada di bawah level mantan pemain Ajax dan Juventus tersebut.

Namun itu tidak membuat Van der Sar tergoda. Dia tetap bersikukuh dengan keputusannya untuk tidak lagi terjun di ajang internasional.

"Saya tidak akan pergi ke Piala Dunia bersama Belanda. Saya telah membuat keputusan ini setelah laga kualifikasi Piala Dunia melawan Norwegia dan saya tidak akan mengubah pendirian ini," ujarnya kepada Algemeen Dagblad.

Veteran goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar looks set to sign a new one-year contract with Manchester United.

The 39-year-old Dutchman has been in talks with manager Sir Alex Ferguson over his future and now appears ready to commit to a 12-month extension.

Quoted in the News of the World, he said: 'I would like to keep on playing so I have decided to sign another contract.

'The club want me to stay and I'm happy here. My fitness is good and I feel I can carry on playing for United.'

Van der Sar returned to the Red Devils' first team last month a spell out through injury and compassionate leave following his wife's suspected brain haemorrhage.

'It's been a hard time for all the family and when something like this happens it's a tough situation,' he said.

'Luckily I was back in Holland when it happened because I was injured and it meant that I could be with her in hospital.

'It's been a difficult period, but I'm happy things are improving at home.'

MANCHESTER - Wacana pensiunnya kiper veteran Edwin van der Sar tampaknya belum akan terwujud dalam waktu dekat. Kiper Belanda dikabarkan siap memperpanjang kontrak bersama Manchester United hingga satu tahun ke depan.

Ya, sejak beberapa waktu lalu, kabar seputar rencana van der Sar gantung sepatu telah merebak luas. Seorang narasumber United pun membenarkan kabar tersebut dan menyatakan mantan bintang Ajax Amsterdam dan Juventus akan mundur dari dunia sepakbola di akhir musim 2009/2010.

Namun, kabar gembira bagi para pecinta The Red Devils. Van der Sar rupanya kini memutuskan untuk menunda pensiun setidaknya hingga satu musim ke depan.

"Saya ingin terus bermain, jadi saya memutuskan untuk menandatangani kontrak baru. Klub menginginkan saya bertahan dan saya bahagia di sini (United). Kondisi fisik saya bagus dan rasanya saya bisa terus bermain untuk United," jelas van der Sar seperti disitat reuters, Senin (22/2/2010).

Keputusan van der Sar tentunya akan disambut gembira oleh pelatih Sir Alex Ferguson. Pasalnya, hingga saat ini Fergie belum bisa mempercayakan posisi utama kepada Ben Foster dan Tomasz Kuszczak.

Van der Sar kembali ke armada Red Devils Januari lalu setelah pulih dari cedera serta menemani istri tercinta yang sempat dirawat di rumah sakit akibat serangan stroke.

"Ini merupakan masa sulit bagi keluarga kami ketika sesuatu seperti ini terjadi. Untungnya saat itu terjadi saya tengah berada di Belanda karena mengalami cedera. Jadi, saya bisa menemani istri saya di rumah sakit," cerita van der Sar.

"Ini memang masa-masa yang sulit, tapi saya gembira karena situasi di rumah kian membaik," tutupnya.

Maap saya masih baru pingin berpendapat aja. Kalau saya lihat dari dulu United memang jaya denga kiper2 yang tua kaya schmeichel, Les Sealey dan sekarang VDS. Mempertahankan BF di OT buang2 energi. Kita tahu mutu dia. mending beli kiper yang berpengalaman . Andai saja Peter Chech di lepas Chelsea maka lebih baik beli dia dengan harga murah. Dengan catatan kalau dijual kalau ndak ya udah beli lainnya aja.

Untuk perpanjangan kontrak VDS saya setuju sekali karena mutu dari GK 2 dan 3 tidak begitu baik . Yang cenderung di pertahan kan Tom Kucgzak dan VDS aja . BF dijual aja.

Munich - Edwin van der Sar tetap dapat pujian meski gawangnya dua kali dibobol pemain Bayern Munich. Jika bukan Van der Sar, Manchester United dinilai bisa saja kalah lebih banyak.

MU unggul terlebih dulu saat Wayne Rooney menjebol gawang Jorg Butt, Rabu (31/3/2010) dinihari WIB. Namun, gol itu ternyata cuma jadi semacam "alarm tanda bangun" untuk Bayern.

Dalam usaha menyamakan kedudukan, Bayern yang menjadi tuan rumah langsung pegang kendali permainan. Serangan demi serangan dilancarkan dan banyak yang akhirnya bisa dimentahkan Van der Sar di bawah gawang 'Setan Merah'.

Memang, Van der Sar kemudian kebobolan sepasang gol pada menit 77 dan kemudian 90. Tetapi ini tak mengurangi apiknya penampilan si kiper Belanda di mata Manajer MU Sir Alex Ferguson.

"Edwin sudah menyelamatkan kami berkali-kali. Dia membuat sedemikian banyak penyelamatan gemilang dan bikin kami masih tetap dalam permainan," puji Fergie di Sporting Life.

Kedua gol yang bersarang di dalam gawang Van der Sar sendiri dapat dikatakan bukanlah karena dia lengah. Kalau gol pertama terjadi setelah bola berubah arah karena membentur pemain MU, gol kedua diakibatkan tak solidnya lini belakang MU sehingga Van der Sar pun sulit berbuat banyak.

"Kalah dari gol semacam itu tidaklah bagus, tapi kami ada di kandang sendiri pada leg kedua dan saya yakin kami punya peluang bagus," imbuh Fergie.

Edwin van der Sar insists Manchester United can win without Wayne Rooney. The club face an anxious wait to discover the extent of the ankle injury that the striker suffered in the final minute of last night's 2-1 defeat to Bayern Munich.

Manchester United's manager claimed the injury was "not too serious" after the game yet even in the best-case scenario, it seems improbable that Rooney will be fit for Saturday's Premier League game with Chelsea at Old Trafford or for the must-win return leg against Bayern four days later.

Yet Van der Sar, whose man-of-the-match display ensured United still have hope of reaching the semi-finals, insists they can cope.

"Against Bolton we also played with some other players," he said. "It can happen in the season. You always want your best players available but we know the players coming in can also do a good job."

In the short-term, Ferguson is expected to use Dimitar Berbatov at the head of his strike-force, as he did at Bolton on Saturday and Wolves a couple of weeks earlier, and retain the same formation that has proved so successful this season.

Should Rooney's injury stretch on, United will be forced to rely on Federico Macheda and Mama Biram Diouf, with Michael Owen and Danny Welbeck already out with calf and knee injuries. Neither Macheda nor Diouf have been tested at the highest level and neither made the bench last night.

Ferguson does have the option of deploying Ryan Giggs in a more advanced role, while Nani, Park Ji-Sung and Antonio Valencia have good attacking instincts. However, none of the latter three have been used as a senior striker, in the way Cristiano Ronaldo was used last season.

Park himself is optimistic that United can beat Bayern when they travel to Old Trafford and pointed to the fact his side had taken an early lead away from home, despite conceding twice.

"We are disappointed because we were leading," he said. "The early goal was good for us but we weren't able to build on it and get the result. But we have our chance to go through at Old Trafford.

"Bayern have an experienced team, and the club has a proud history. They did well but the situation will be different at Old Trafford. We're waiting for them to come there."

Edwin van der Sar refused to blame Liverpool for United's failure to overhaul Premier League leaders Chelsea on Sunday, conceding that the Reds' deficit was built over the course of the season.

The Blues' trip to Anfield was long perceived as their final hurdle of the title run-in, but the effortless manner with which they brushed aside Rafa Benitez's wearied side made a mockery of any pre-match hopes.

"You hope, but you don't really expect anything," Edwin told MUTV. "Even if they had tried really hard I think they had a gruesome two weeks, played a lot of games and they picked up a couple of injuries.

"I don't think that's the cause of us maybe not winning the league, that happened over the course of the year and some breaks we didn't get and Chelsea got, especially in the last couple of weeks."

While the Reds' own preparations could have been adversely affected by Chelsea's Merseyside stroll, a dominant, defiant display at Sunderland instead takes the title race to the final weekend.

Van der Sar conceded that he and his fellow players had not expected any favours prior to Sunday's late kick-off, and still retain a shred of hope that Wigan can spring an almighty shock at Stamford Bridge next Sunday.

"I think we expected it," he said. "The Gaffer had a couple of words before the game and the way we played and created the chances, we knew what to do.

"You want to grab every little chance there is. You never know in football, of course, but it's going to be hard, difficult and not likely, but never mind, we have to make sure we work till the end.

"It would've been nice if we were a point ahead. We're not in charge and it's difficult, but we have to keep going, see what we can do this week on the training ground, see if everybody has recovered from this match and hopefully have a nice game for our supporters on Sunday. MANCHESTER, KOMPAS.com - Kiper Manchester United (MU), Edwin van der Sar, mengaku tak pernah membayangkan bertahan di Old Trafford selama enam musim. Ia pun berterima kasih atas kepercayaan pelatih Alex Ferguson dan rekan-rekan tim kepadanya.

MU membeli Dan der Sar dari Fulham pada 2005 silam dengan kontrak hanya untuk dua tahun. Van der Sar mengaku tak berpikir akan tetap berkostum "Setan Merah" lebih dari itu. Faktanya, ia kini tetap di Old Trafford, dan berpeluang memperpanjangnya, setidaknya, untuk satu musim lagi.

"Aku masih yakin, aku sudah berbuat cukup untuk bermain di klub yang lebih besar. Namun, Anda membutuhkan seseorang yang berani bertaruh (untuk Anda), seperti yang dilakukan Sir Alex Ferguson," ungkapnya.

EDWIN VAN DER SAR never expected to be committing himself to a sixth season at Manchester United.

When the giant Dutch keeper arrived from Fulham on a two-year contract in 2005, he felt his stay at Old Trafford would not go much further than that.

Having graced the biggest stage at Ajax and Juventus before joining what was supposed to be a revolution at Fulham that turned out rather differently than he imagined, Van der Sar just relished the chance of starring for a big club once again.

However, in joining fellow veterans Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes and Gary Neville in committing himself to the Red Devils cause for another year, Van der Sar is now edging towards a testimonial.

“I still believed I was doing enough to play for a bigger team but you need someone to take a gamble, which Sir Alex Ferguson did,” the 39-year-old said.

“At the time I was 34 so I didn’t expect to be here six years.

“I thought that I would be at United for two years and then maybe go and do something else. Instead I am steadily trying to reach my testimonial.”

Although Van der Sar has suffered with injuries this term, and does not feel his form has been as good as in previous years, Ferguson still has faith in the former Holland skipper, and Ben Foster, for one, can see no route back to the first team as long as Van der Sar remains around.

The man himself can offer no explanation for his longevity, other than pointing out life is physically much different for a keeper than the men plying their trade in front of him.

And, once he had a talk with wife Annemarie, who suffered a major illness just before Christmas, Van der Sar’s decision was an easy one.

“It was important my wife felt okay with it,” he said.

“If she had said she would rather go back to Holland then we would have done that.

“But I had made up my mind in December that I would keep playing and join the other old boys, who keep on going.

“My position is not as demanding as Paul and Ryan, who have had to run and tackle a lot.

“But the main thing is we are all still enjoying it.”

There may not be too much enjoyment to be gained from Sunday’s season finale against Stoke at Old Trafford.

United go into the contest still harbouring hopes of lifting a record 19th league title and becoming the first club in English football history to win four championships on the trot.

However, as they are reliant on lowly Wigan avoiding defeat at Stamford Bridge, where champions-elect Chelsea have failed to win just twice all season, the odds are stacked against them.

It leaves Van der Sar facing the prospect of finishing a runner-up, just as he was in his first season at the club, when United also only had the Carling Cup as a consolation prize.

“It is very strange,” he admitted.

“In the last three years we have been in command. Now we have to wait.

“It is going to be difficult. We have lost a lot of games this year but we are still in there at the end.

“Hopefully Wigan will have a go for it on Sunday and we will hear some positive news.”

MU adalah jawara Premier League dalam tiga musim terakhir dan berambisi mempertahankan dominasi mereka musim ini. Peluang itu cukup terbuka mengingat hingga pekan ke-37, mereka bertengger di posisi kedua dengan 82 poin, atau kalah satu angka dari Chelsea.

"Kami kalah dalam banyak pertandingan musim ini. Namun, kami masih bisa finis di sana (puncak). Mudah-mudahan, Wigan akan (menang) pada hari Minggu nanti dan kami akan mendengar berita positif," ungkap Van der Sar.

It took Sir Alex Ferguson five years after Peter Schmeichel retired to get it right by signing Van der Sar, and the Dutchman said whoever follows him has to learn exactly what it means to be a United keeper.

The Dutchman said : "I don't know if it will be difficult to find someone to follow me but it's not easy to play for a club like United.

"There are a lot of responsibilities and sometimes it takes people a bit longer to accomplish what they can do.

"I wouldn't say there hasn't been a strong deputy here behind me. Both the keepers Ben Foster and Tomasz Kuszczak played a number of games last season when I was out. When that happens they have to take their chances when they come some have done that, others haven't."

Edwin van der Sar has revealed how Sir Alex Ferguson’s faith convinced him to play on.

The veteran Dutchman, who turns 40 this year, was in outstanding form as United clinched the Community Shield.

Despite considering hanging up his boots last season, he signed a one-year extension to his Old Trafford contract and proved he still has what it takes to be United’s No1 with a series of top-class saves at Wembley.

It only confirmed that Ferguson was right to put off his search for a new keeper this summer in the belief that he can eek one more year out of the former Holland international.

“The manager gave a bit of a team talk before the match today,” said Van der Sar. “He said he was happy I stayed and that I can still do this.

“That keeps you going and the other players keep you going as well. It’s a nice place to be.”

Van der Sar wasn’t the only United player who looked determined to avenge the surrender of the title to Chelsea.

Paul Scholes, Nemanja Vidic and Antonio Valencia were all outstanding as double winners Chelsea were swept aside while Javier Hernandez continued his impressive strike-rate and

Dimitar Berbatov rounded off the scoring with a sublime lob.

Van der Sar is convinced United have the quality to wrest back the title.

“It was important for the players to get some action,” he said. “There were a lot of players on the pitch who haven’t played many games in the pre-season.

“Wayne Rooney, Michael Owen and Ji-Sung Park all played a big part in the first half and Dimitar Berbatov, Chicharito and Nani came on and did well in the second. It shows that the strength of the squad is good. We created a lot of chances and deserved to win.”

Despite entering the twilight of his career, Van der Sar says he has learned how to handle the rigours of playing for so long.

“It was so long ago that I was 20 and did my first pre-season that I forget how tired I was at that time,” he said.

“But you learn from experience of how to cope with the high intensity of training where as back then the excitement would have carried me through.”

Meanwhile, another veteran, Ryan Giggs, insists victory in the Community Shield will be worth nothing if United do not start the season with a bang against Newcastle.

“It’s always nice to win this game,” he said. “The fans come to Wembley and want to see a show and I thought we did that.

“I thought we controlled most of the game. Chelsea are a good side and they had possession but they weren’t hurting. They had some half chances but Edwin pulled off some great saves.

“But it has no bearing on the season. It’s nice to win but the real stuff starts next week.”

Manchester United goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar, the oldest player currently in the Premier League, has hinted this is likely to be his final season by admitting the club can no longer rely on their veterans to win a record 19th League title this season.

Van der Sar, who turns 40 in October, has twice put off retirement to sign one-year deals at Old Trafford but as United launch their Premier League title challenge against Newcastle United tomorrow night, the popular Dutchman says it is time for the young generation to step forward and take the pressure off seasoned campaigners like Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes, Gary Neville and himself.

Van der Sar says in a CNN interview to be broadcast tonight: 'You can't keep relying on the likes of myself, Scholes, Giggs and Neville. You have to bring through young players, and some of those are going to get the opportunity to work this season. We will play about 65-70 games. It's hard for the older boys to play twice a week, so it's important for everyone in the squad to play their part.'

Sir Alex Ferguson has actively pursued a buy-young policy this summer, paying £20million for the unproven talents of Javier Hernandez, 22, Chris Smalling and Bebe, both 20, as United attempt to bounce back from losing the title to Chelsea last season.

A whole new crop of young players, including Rafael and Fabio da Silva, Jonny Evans, Tom Cleverley, Darron Gibson and Federico Macheda, will challenge for first-team places this season, while key men Wayne Rooney and Nani are still in their early twenties.

Van der Sar said one of the most important lessons for United's new generation is to learn the relentless hunger to win trophies, particularly after setbacks.

He added: 'Last season should motivate us.Personally, I don't think about the things I have won but the things I have lost. I don't think about the 2008 Champions League final which we won, I remember Rome in 2009 which we lost.

'That's why we try to win things, to win trophies back. It is the same with the Premier League this season. I have won things in my career and people ask why that's not enough. But there can always be more.'

For the first time in 20 years, United need a good start to the season to ensure the 'sell-out' signs can still be posted around Old Trafford. Debts incurred by the owners, the Glazer family, have forced Ferguson to rethink his transfer policy and that is why he has become involved with Barcelona, Real Madrid and Chelsea to try to sign one of the brightest young players in Europe, Germany's Mesut Özil, who has a year left on his contract at Werder Bremen.

Yet United's Community Shield win against Chelsea at Wembley backs up the feeling that Ferguson still has the strongest squad in the country to call upon.

Giggs, United's record appearance holder and 11-time champion, is confident United will win the title to move ahead of Liverpool in the record books.

Normally diplomatic, the Welshman is even happy to send out a warning to neighbours Manchester City, who have spent £300m on players since the Abu Dhabi takeover to try to usurp United.

Giggs said: 'I think it's a good balance of experienced players and young players coming through. I think the money spent here on players is always looked at in terms of three or four steps into the future.

'There have always been challenges for United. When I first got into the team, Blackburn had a lot of money and we overcame that.

'Chelsea was similar; they won two Leagues, but we won three when they were spending a lot of money.

'Now City have got a lot of money, but it all depends if their team gels. They've got good players but I still think we've got better players, and I think we're a better team than all the others in the Premier League.'

Considering Mark Hughes was sacked by City last December despite being on schedule to meet a 70-point target set prior to the campaign, Ferguson thinks he knows what City owner Sheikh Mansour will be expecting from Roberto Mancini and his team.

'City have to be in the top four,' said Ferguson. 'They've spent money and the expectation increases with that. They have got to be in the pecking order. Mancini will know the strength of the players he had last year. I said last season they could easily go and buy another team and he has added Silva, Toure, Boateng and Kolarov.

'I don't think they will be looking at making a bad start, though. They didn't have one last season and they had a new team then. They have individuals who can score a goal and win games like Tevez and Adebayor.'

van der sar sangat menikmati kehidupannya di manchester dan sangat berterima kasih kepada mancheste united telah mengsupport keluarganya.

Edwin Van der Sar is very appreciative of his life and situation in Manchester since his wife’s illness. His kids are settled in school and his life has been put in to perspective. He thinks the club treated him brilliantly and were so supportive during that difficult time, so he really is keen to pay the club back however he can.

Manchester United goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar has admitted he no longer worries about when he will have to call time on his career.

Van der Sar turns 40 in October and remains at the top of his game for United, who he joined from Fulham five years ago.

Each passing season has led to suggestions it could be Van der Sar's last, but the Dutchman is now just happy to be playing at such a high level.

"I don't worry about when that day arrives," he said. "I am now exceeding my own expectations so it doesn't bother me.

"When I was younger I thought maybe I would finish in my mid-30s. But that is a normal time to be thinking about it when you are younger and for players at this level.

"That would have been the obvious time to finish, but I only came to United late in my career and maybe that is why I am still enjoying it.

"Coming to Old Trafford probably gave me a new lease of life."

Van der Sar also believes that, while he retains the faith of United boss Sir Alex Ferguson, there is no need to contemplate retirement.

"The club have to be happy," he said.

"If they are not happy with the quality you are producing then there is no need to keep on going.

"I broke two fingers in pre-season last year and then got another knee injury later on, but every time I was fit I was picked again so that was a good sign for me.

"It proved he still had confidence in me and my qualities and ability.

"It is always nice when you work hard to get back and then the first opportunity to put you back in the team he does it. It is important to know he has that faith."

Everton goalkeeper Tim Howard has praised Manchester United counterpart Edwin van der Sar for staying at the highest level despite his age.

The former Dutch international will turn 40 in October and is into his sixth season with the Red Devils, but is firmly still the club's No.1.

Van der Sar replaced Howard as the club's main goalkeeper in 2005, which saw the American move from Old Trafford to become Everton's first choice a year later.

However despite being ousted from the United jersey, Howard hailed his opposite number, who he will face when Everton meet United on Saturday in the Premier League at Goodison Park.

"He's performed admirably for his club and country for such a long time and he seems to get better and stay at a very high level," he told Sky Sports News.

"That's not easy to do in that position and at a club like Manchester United.

"Hats have to go off to him and other keepers like him at that age to keep plugging away.

"I'm nine years away from that and it's difficult now because of the pressures and the work that you put in, so when you get to that age, he's done very well."
Playing well

The Toffees have failed to win any of their first three league games, picking up just one point in a draw with Wolves despite being tipped to enjoy a good season.

The 31-year-old is confident Everton can kick-start their season against United, but must work on cutting out some individual errors.

"There's always a game or two that seems to kick-start the season and light a fire under you," he added.

"For whatever reason it could be Manchester United or it could be anyone else.

"We're playing pretty good but things haven't been falling for us, one or two individual mistakes in the first couple of games have cost us goals.

"We certainly need to clear that up, but other than that I think we're playing pretty well."

Edwin Van der Sar is ready to retire at the end of the season.

But the United keeper has set his sights on winning the FA Cup before he quits Old Trafford.

The Dutch ace turns 40 this month and, although the Reds are likely to offer him another 12-month deal, he has indicated this will be his last campaign with United.

“I think Ed has made his mind up and said this is his last year,” said Reds goalkeeping coach Eric Steele.

“He is a good pro and a sensible and highly intelligent guy who will know when the time is right. I don’t think he will need myself or the manager to tell him that time has come. He will know.”

Having won the Champions League, three Premier League titles, the Carling Cup and the Fifa Club World Cup since joining United from Fulham in 2005, the only domestic medal missing is the FA Cup.

And, despite the famous old trophy being third on the Reds’ priority list this season, Steele says a Wembley triumph on May 14 is Van der Sar’s dream.

“He hasn’t won it and that is a big target for him,” said Steele. “He has won most things in the game, there is not much left he hasn’t.

“When we rotate our goalkeepers I think you will see Mr Van der Sar knocking on the door and asking the boss to play in the FA Cup.”

Steele, whose job it is to find a replacement for Van der Sar, would be keen to see the Reds No.1 prolong his career for another season.

“I think we need him because this team is in transition at the moment,” he said.

“If he gets to Christmas and he thinks it is right to go on and the manager thinks it is right we will make a decision.

“It is down to how he feels and performs. If he doesn’t perform the manager will make the decision. Edwin will as well.”

However, Van der Sar has now rejected Steele's claims and said he has no intention of making a decision about his future at this stage.

"That's complete nonsense," he told www.sport-promotion.nl. "I do not know where this story comes from but it is nonsense.

A few weeks ago Eric Steele, Manchester United's goalkeeping coach, told the Manchester Evening News he thought Van der Sar had already decided he would retire at the end of the current season. It didn't feel quite right and the following day Van der Sar issued a clarification through United's website, saying he had no idea where the headlines had originated (clue: he's the guy chucking balls at you most mornings).

What can be said with certainty is that Sir Alex Ferguson has already started looking at bringing one, possibly two goalkeepers, into the club. David de Gea, of Atlético Madrid, has been watched. Anders Lindegaard, the Danish international, is another possibility, but finding a goalkeeper for a club of United's size and ambition is not easy, as Ferguson knows from bitter experience.

"There are certain criteria to be a goalkeeper here: good experience, personality and a track record," Ferguson says. "Edwin has all of those qualities. He didn't cost us a lot of money, about £2m, so he's right up there with my best signings. I just wish we had signed him earlier, to be honest."

Ferguson's hope is that Van der Sar, the ninth man to play at the age of 40 since the Premier League's formation (seven of them goalkeepers), will delay his retirement by another season. After five years of working with him, United's manager now openly talks about the Dutchman, the most capped Holland international in history, being the equal to Peter Schmeichel as one of the two most supreme goalkeepers in the club's history.

Yet the two are very different in their style. Schmeichel was a brute to get the ball past, whereas Van der Sar operates by the theory that goalkeepers make great saves only as the last resort. His talent is about controlling the penalty area, understanding the angles, when to leave his line, the right commands for the defence. Joop Hiele, Van der Sar's former keeping coach, once explained why he had played so long at the top: "Goalkeeping is registering the situation, recognising it and finding the solution. The more often you do it, the easier it gets."

Van der Sar has perfected the art to the point there was genuine disbelief when the man they know as "Ice Rabbit" in the Netherlands on account of his temperament spilled a routine cross to let in Somen Tchoyi for the softest of goals for West Bromwich Albion at Old Trafford two weekends ago. "Here's a lad with 130 caps for Holland, the most fantastic career you could imagine," Ferguson later reflected. "You couldn't even criticise him because he doesn't deserve that. He'll probably make one horrendous mistake in his life."

Otherwise, Van der Sar's story at Old Trafford has been a demonstration of long, calm assurance, incorporating two Champions League finals, three league titles and a place in the record books for not conceding a league goal during 1,311 minutes of play over a three-month period in the 2008-09 season.

"I just think he's so suited to Manchester United," Michael Owen, the United striker, says of the oldest post-war player in the club's history (though still some way short of Billy Meredith, who was 46 years and 281 days when he played his last game in 1921). "The way he is with his feet, for example – the way he never panics when he is kicking. You might not notice it but you can't underestimate how much that helps the team.

"He'll play the ball out to his full-back and get it back and there might be no pass on with somebody charging him down. But he won't panic. Some goalkeepers are so scared of making a mistake they will just whack it, but not Edwin. Edwin sets off everything for us."

The oddity is that Van der Sar somehow remains a largely unsung hero, as if we have grown so accustomed to him doing his job we are guilty sometimes of taking it for granted. Think of the 2008 Champions League and what is the first thing that comes into your mind? The abiding image is of John Terry's penalty miss. But it was Van der Sar who was Uefa's man-of-the-match in Moscow that night and his save from Nicolas Anelka won the game. Look closely at the video and you will see he is smiling before the ball even hits his hands.

Kalo ngomongin VDS entah kenapa saya selalu komparasi sama Schemeicel :) Mereka kiper2 luar bisa United yang bisa bantu United ngangkat European Cup :) Tapi Schemeicel tidak menutup karir nya di Old Trafford, sayang sekali.. Mudah2an VDS bisa lanjut berkiprah di United deh.. Setuju ama usulan dia jadi pelatih kiper :)

Sir Alex Ferguson has confirmed he expects Edwin van der Sar to retire at the end of the season.
The Dutch keeper has in recent seasons made a decision about his future at Christmas and, while the 40-year-old has yet to confirm anything himself his time, Sir Alex is already preparing for life without him.

"We’re planning for it to be possibly Edwin’s last season," the Reds boss told his pre-Sunderland press conference on Thursday.

When asked whether Edwin would go into coaching after ending his playing career, Sir Alex said: "He’ll be someone of interest in terms of his knowledge and experience, but we haven’t discussed that yet."

New signing Anders Lindegaard has begun training with the Reds and will be officially registered with the club in the New Year.

Edwin is likely to be between the sticks on Sunday against the Black Cats, a game Ferguson is not taking lightly, especially given a virus has swept through his camp again.

United have no new injuries to report for the Boxing Day encounter, with Paul Scholes (groin) and John O'Shea (calf) still sidelined. However, Nemanja Vidic, Nani, Anderson and Michael Carrick have all been laid low with a bug in recent days.

Ferguson is optimistic that quartet will be fit for Sunday but admits the postponement of last weekend's trip to Chelsea may have been a blessing in disguise in one regard.
"We've no injuries to report other than Scholesy and O’Shea," he continued. "Wes Brown picked up a little injury in the week but he should be OK.

"The biggest thing we’ve been trying to do is clear up some 'flu, which we've had about the place over the lsst eight days.

The goalkeeper has yet to officially state his intentions, but manager Sir Alex Ferguson revealed last month that he expected the 40-year-old to bring an end to his playing career in May.

United are eager to keep Van der Sar, a 130-time Holland international and double winner of the UEFA Champions League, as part of the club's backroom staff if he does quit and he could act a possible mentor for new signing Anders Lindegaard.

Recent Reds signing Anders Lindegaard has started training with his new team-mates at Carrington.

The 26 year-old's acquisition was announced on 27 November and while he must wait until January before he's eligible to play for the club, the Danish goalkeeper is now acclimatising to life at Carrington and getting to know his United colleagues.

Lindegaard arrives with plenty of games under his belt this year, after finishing fourth in the Norwegian league with previous club Aalesunds FK. Anders comes with high acclaim too, with former Tottenham goalkeeper Erik Thorstvedt among his admirers.

“He has an impressive overall game – he’s got good hands, is confident with crosses and has good presence," said Thorstvedt, who's been able to watch Lindegaard while working as a pundit for Norwegian TV.

Another famous Norwegian, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, has also praised the big Dane.

“It’s dangerous to say but he’s very good with his feet which reminds me of Edwin (van der Sar)," Solskjaer told us, prior to his departure.

"Lindegaard can pick out players and that’s one of the strengths of his game. I like that about him."

It remains to be seen whether United will sign anyone else in January but for now the squad heads into the New Year already with one promising addition.

hahaha, masalah fisik dan psikologi tentu tiap orang tidak sama, ada yang kadang baru 30an udah lemah dan berasa tua, ada juga yang udah 50an tapi masih kuta dan masih berasa muda.... :D

Klo masalah performa kedepan sih nggak ada yang bisa mastikan. Siapa juga yang bisa mastikan pemaen bakalan gemilang. Hanya apa yang fergie lakukan sangat menunjukkan keseriusan dia buat mencari pengganti yang paling tepat buat VDS. Erik Steele dah dikirim buat nge-scout beberapa kiper top. Jadi rasanya kiper baru yang akan datang musim panas depan bakal top dan mahal.

Sebenernya klo dilihat umur Tk msh cukup mumpuni untuk menjadi seorang penjaga gawang andalan United. TK 28, Anders 26. Tp Bagaimana jg pelatih dan stafnya ngga bisa asal masukin pemain ke tim utama tanpa melihat perkembangan selama latihan, diluar latihan maupun progressnya (mungkin ini alasan gw gak suka mereka yg hujat2 si Bebe waktu itu)> penilaian pelatih gak mungkin lah cuma dalam 1 atau 2 sesi latihan saja ..hehe..

Jadi ini sepetinya untuk jangka panjang, jika melihat VDS. Dan jujur, Amos lebih baik dari TK, IMO :)

Ferguson said: 'I should have signed Van der Sar after Schmeichel. I made a mistake but now we think we know where we're going. Schmeichel and Van der Sar have been magnificent for us. I've been very lucky to have had them both.'

New signing Anders Lindegaard has been training with United for several weeks but the Denmark keeper will not be registered to play until after the game against Stoke on January 4.

However, Lindegaard is expected to start out as a back-up goalkeeper to compete with - or replace - Tomasz Kuszczak, with Ferguson set to sign a permanent successor to Van der Sar in the summer.

United appear to have narrowed the list of candidates down to Manuel Neuer of Schalke, Atletico Madrid's David de Gea and Ajax keeper Maarten Stekelenburg.

There has been speculation about Van der Sar's future since he was 40 at the end of October, although at the time the Dutchman dismissed as 'rubbish' comments from United goalkeeping coach Eric Steele that this season would be his last.

'I expected it to be his last season,' said Ferguson. 'It's amazing to be playing at 40 years of age at our level. You can only do it if you've got that structure and the mind. To be able to programme himself and train the way he does is phenomenal. He's an outstanding man.'

VIVAnews - Edwin van der Sar memutuskan untuk menjadikan musim ini sebagai musim terakhirnya bersama Manchester United.

Di saat mantan kiper timnas Belanda ini ingin pensiun, putranya justru masuk ke Manchester United. Ya, kini akan ada dua nama Van der Sar di buku panduan MU.

“Joe biasanya bermain di posisi gelandang. Tapi, belakangan ia mengubah posisinya seperti saya, menjadi kiper," kata Van der Sar tentang putranya, Joe kepada tribalfootball.

"Itu bukan hal buruk,” lanjutnya.

Ya, Joe dipastikan masuk tim MU U-12. Selama ini, Joe yang baru berusia 9 tahun memang sering terlihat menyaksikan pertandingan Sang Ayah.

Tampaknya, ia terpesona dengan penampilan ayahnya sehingga juga ingin menjadi kiper. Dan fans Setan Merah kini berharap banyak kepada Van der Sar Junior bisa mewarisi bakat hebat ayahnya.

Sebelumnya, kiper legendaris MU, Peter Schmeichel juga punya putra, Kasper yang mengikuti jejaknya sebagai kiper. Kasper sempat disebut-sebut mewarisi bakat Peter kala memperkuat Manchester City era 2006-2009.

Sayangnya, di City ia hanya tampil 8 kali. Kasper yang kini berusia 24 tahun memperkuat klub Divisi 2 Liga Inggris (Championship Division), Leeds United.

Tapi, ia masih tercatat sebagai kiper timnas Denmark U-21. Di tim U-21, Kasper telah tampil dalam 18 laga.

Legenda Manchester United Peter Schmeichel memberikan saran agar manajer Sir Alex Ferguson bisa membujuk kiper Edwin van der Sar untuk menunda rencana pensiun pada akhir musim ini.

Threadnya sebaiknya di merge aja sama yang dah ada.

Tapi sebelumnya mo komen dulu. Klo aku lebih berharap VDS pensiun... cepat atau lambat United butuh kiper baru. VDS nunda pensiun pun paling2 hanya untuk 1 musim. Lebih baik United segera cari kiper pengganti. Toh ada waktu 6 bulan buat nyeleksi kiper baru plus mencoba kiper yang ada.

Kiper Manchester United Edwin van der Sar membidik dua laga berikutnya untuk mengukuhkan posisi tim di puncak klasemen.

Kiper Edwin van der Sar telah kembali. Pulih dari cedera yang membuat dirinya absen pada tiga pertandingan, Van der Sar kembali berdiri di bawah mistar Manchester United saat menghadapi Tottenham Hotspur, Minggu lalu.

Dalam pertandingan Liga Primer Inggris di White Hart Lane, kiper berusia 40 ini kembali menunjukkan kehebatannya. Terutama pada 20 menit terakhir menyusul diusirnya Rafael da Silva setelah mendapat kartu merah.

Van der Sar mengamankan gawang United sehingga tidak kebobolan dan laga berakhir imbang 0-0.

"Saya terpaksa absen di beberapa pertandingan karena cedera betis. Kini, kondisinya sudah membaik," kata Van der Sar.

Ditambahkannya, "Tottenham adalah laga pertama saya. Karena itu, saya sangat senang karena mempertahankan gawang tidak kebobolan melalui beberapa penyelamatan gemilang. Ini tentu hal yang bagus."

Kini, Van der Sar membidik dua laga berikutnya melawan Birmingham City, Sabtu (22/1), dan Blackpool, Selasa (25/1). Bila mampu memenuhi target, United bakal meninggalkan para rivalnya.

Manchester United legend Harry Gregg is confident his old team will win a record 19th league title — as long as Dutch goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar stays injury free.

Gregg, one of the shrewdest football minds around, has watched United with great interest this season.

For just about every United supporter, it’s life, but not as they know it.

Sir Alex Ferguson’s side are in the familiar position of being in top spot in the Premier League table, yet they have got there playing solid rather than the spectacular football we are all used to seeing at Old Trafford.

After 21 league games they remain unbeaten and are ahead of Manchester City on goal difference — their derby rivals having played two matches more.

Gregg, who became an icon at Old Trafford between the sticks from 1957 to 1968, is not convinced United, who host Birmingham tomorrow, will go all season without losing, but he does feel they will go on to win the title.

Assuming that is, nothing untoward happens to their experienced Dutch goalkeeper.

“I don’t think they will stay unbeaten throughout the course of the season, but there is every likelihood that they will win the league,” said the Northern Ireland great, who played in the 1958 World Cup finals.

“It is true that they are not playing in the spectacular fashion that has marked previous Manchester United teams out from the rest, but they are still getting results and ultimately that’s what counts.

“I don’t think Sir Alex Ferguson will be that bothered that United aren’t playing brilliant football, as long as they keep winning.

“Like me I’m sure he will feel there is more to come from his team and I’d be surprised if they didn’t play better than they have done so far between now and the end of the season.

“The only worry that I would have about United going on to win the league title is if anything happens to Edwin van der Sar.

“If he gets injured for a spell that will cause problems for United because in my book his replacement (Tomasz Kuszczak) is a liability.

“As far as I am concerned the two most consistent goalkeepers in the Premier League are Van der Sar and Brad Friedel at Aston Villa.

“Van der Sar has a commanding presence and doesn’t make many mistakes.

“I know that Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic have been playing well recently, and people have said United would be in difficulty if something happened to one of them, but you can replace outfield players easier than specialists.

“For instance the Northern Ireland lad Jonny Evans could come in and do a job in central defence.

“Goalkeeping is different — and if and when Van der Sar retires, United will find it difficult replacing him long term.”

Rivals Manchester City seem to have no problems replacing anyone.

If they don’t think a certain player is up to the job, they go out and spend mega-bucks to bring a new recruit in.

Witness the £27 million they shelled out recently on striker Edin Dzeko.

Gregg, typically, has forthright views on the “noisy neighbours” as Fergie calls them.

“When I look at what is going on at Manchester City, I see it as a circus,” stated the 78-year-old.

“They have money to burn and are bringing players in from all over the place.

“I do believe that they will finish in the top three, which will obviously be their best position for many years.

“But I can’t help feeling that things just aren’t right inside the club.

“It is certainly a situation to keep an eye on.”

Edwin van der Sar kept his 12th clean sheet of the season against Birmingham City on Saturday.

The Dutchman, now 40, looked as nimble as ever, and the Stretford End chanted his name numerous times throughout the match. He even played a key role in Dimitar Berbatov's third goal, clearing acrobatically and accurately to Rooney before the Bulgarian finished the move.

Van der Sar's performance almost made a mockery of recent rumours suggesting he's set to hang up his gloves at the end of the season. Like Ryan Giggs, he looks like he could play on for at least another year.

But whether or not Edwin does hang up his gloves at the end of this season or next, one thing’s certain: when he does he’ll be sorely missed. United may be synonymous with free-flowing, attacking football, but the Reds' success in recent years has been built as much on a bedrock of defensive solidity. And that’s where Edwin comes in.

A look at the last three seasons confirms United concede fewer goals and keep more clean sheets when the Dutchman plays.This season the difference is even more pronounced. When Edwin’s played in 2010/11 United have conceded, on average, 0.75 goals per game. When he hasn’t that figure rises to 1.22 goals per game. Break that down even further, to his last 13 appearances, and Edwin’s conceded at a rate of just 0.38 goals per game and kept eight clean sheets.

It should be noted that Tomasz Kuszczak, Ben Amos and Ben Foster (who between them have kept goal for the Reds 53 times since the start of 2008/09) have performed admirably between the posts. In fact, their statistics (see graphs below) are perfectly respectable.

But when held up alongside van der Sar’s, you realise what a huge blow Edwin’s departure will be. No wonder so many United fans are hoping he puts pen to paper and sticks around for at least another season.

Segudang prestasi sudah dicapai Edwin Van Der Sar sejak bergabung dengan Manchester United di tahun 2005 dari Fulham. Mulai dari gelar domestik hingga internasional didapatnya bersama United.

Namun dari semua itu, ada satu penyesalan yang dikantunginya bersama United, yaitu tidak bergabung lebih awal.

Edwin van der Sar is set to disappoint Sir Alex Ferguson by walking away from football at the end of the season.

The 40-year-old Manchester United keeper will call time on his playing career this summer and a coaching offer is on the table from Old Trafford manager Ferguson.

But the Dutchman has decided to take a lengthy break after more than 20 years as a professional.

He said: 'I will hopefully not start coaching too quickly. I will try to have 18 months or two years for myself - and I've a family to do nice things with too.

'I think about 80 per cent of players who played in football are saying that.'

Van der sar starred for Ajax, Juventus and Fulham before joining United in 2005 but wishes he had linked up with Ferguson in 2001.

The Cottagers offered a better deal at the time and Van der Sar added: 'One of the biggest regrets from both sides - United's and mine - is that we didn't come together earlier.'

Kiper Manchester United Edwin Van Der tidak akan langsung berganti peran menjadi pelatih setelah pensiun nanti.

Setelah beberapa musim menjadi andalan Manchester United di bawah mistar gawang, Edwin Van Der Sar akan gantung sarung tangan di akhir musim ini.

Keputusan tersebut diterima pihak klub. United juga menyatakan harapan mereka Van Der Sar bisa terus berada di tim untuk menjadi pelatih kiper.

Namun tawaran tersebut ditolak Van Der Sar, setidaknya dalam waktu dekat.

"Saya tidak bisa berharap memulai karir sebagai pelatih dengan cepat," katanya dilansir The Sun, Senin (24/1).

"Saya akan berusaha menghabiskan waktu selama 18 bulan atau dua tahun untuk diri saya sendiri, dan saya punya keluarga yang juga ingin bersenang-senang."

VDS confirms retirement date

It was the news we had been expecting but dreading at the same time. Edwin van der Sar has confirmed he does intend to retire at the end of the season.

First stated by Eric Steele on BBC Red Wednesday last night, the Dutch man confirmed the decision in a statement on his management company’s website that said:

“It is now time to pay attention to my family. I cannot really identify a time when it (the decision) happened, let’s just say that it was playing on my mind from the moment Annemarie had her stroke.”

“She has fought back from it. We decided on another year in England and thus to stay at Manchester United. But, once engaged in the season, the thought of saying goodbye started to gnaw a bit more emphatically.”

United have been here before and struggled to replace Peter Schmeichel adequately after he moved to Sporting Lisbon in 1999.
Van der Sar was the eventual replacement after a number of keepers failed to make the grade but now he is to depart who will replace him?
Tomasz Kuszczak continues to claim he is ready to step up yet has failed to convince all whilst new signing Anders Lindegaard is yet to be tested at this level leaving some to ponder if a new keeper is on his way into Old Trafford.

Manchester - Edwin van der Sar menegaskan kembali keinginannya untuk gantung sepatu di akhir musim ini. Keputusan itu diambil kiper asal Belanda itu karena demi memberi perhatian lebih kepada keluarga, terutama istrinya.

"Dia sudah bertarung lama melawan kanket. Kami memutuskan untuk tinggal setahun lagi di Inggris dan bertahan di Manchester United. Manchester United goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar will retire from football at the end of the season.

The 40-year-old former Holland international moved to Old Trafford from Fulham in 2005 and helped the Red Devils to three Premier League titles and Champions League glory in 2008.

Quoted on the website of his management agency, www.sport-promotion.nl, he said: "It is now time to pay attention to my family."

Van der Sar has been contemplating hanging up his boots since his wife Annemarie collapsed with a brain haemorrhage in December 2009.

"I cannot really identify a time when it [the decision] happened," said the former Ajax man.

"Let's just say that it was playing on my mind from the moment Annemarie had her stroke.

"She has fought back from it. We decided on another year in England and thus to stay at Manchester United.

"It has been a mutual decision between the manager, the team and Edwin.

"He has been a fantastic servant. I was very lucky. I worked alongside Peter Schmeichel at Villa and I worked with Edwin for two and a half years.

"That penalty save in Moscow has elevated Edwin alongside Peter."

Van der Sar admitted it had not been an easy decision but he feels the time is right.

He added on www.sport-promotion.nl: "One minute you're out. The next, you question it again. I thought about stopping, maybe a year ago. It is a difficult process. After a defeat, I thought differently than after playing a few good games in a row.

"My age played no role. I am 40 years old, but I still feel fit.

"And then the decision came suddenly. Do not ask me how or why, but suddenly you know. That was sufficient.

"The time has come to devote greater attention to my family - although they have never complained. Everyone in the family has indeed always had to focus on me, but we have also had a lot in return."

The announcement will come as no surprise to United boss Sir Alex Ferguson.

"We are planning for this being his last season," he said last month.

Given his vast experience, Van der Sar is bound to be an attractive proposition as a coach, and has been linked with a role in Ferguson's backroom staff.

"Edwin is a player who would be of interest in terms of his knowledge and standing in the game," added the Scot.

Having stated on numerous occasions his regret at not bringing in Van der Sar as an immediate replacement for Schmeichel when the Dane retired in 1999, Ferguson will want to avoid being similarly exposed this time around.

Denmark international Anders Lindegaard has already been brought in from Aalesund, while Schalke's Manuel Neuer continues to be linked with an Old Trafford move.

Van der Sar started his career with Ajax in 1990 and enjoyed nearly a decade of success in Amsterdam.

He picked up four Eredivisie titles and three Dutch cups on the domestic front and savoured European success with a UEFA Cup win in 1992 and Champions League glory three years later.

Two years at Juventus followed before a switch to Fulham in 2001. He soon established himself as one of the most reliable keepers in England and attracted the attention of United in 2005.

Van der Sar was charged with the task of filling the boots of Schmeichel, who left Old Trafford in 1999 after a wonderful spell at the club which ended with a Champions League victory.

Mark Bosnich, Massimo Taibi, Raimond van der Gouw, Fabien Barthez, Roy Carroll and Ricardo had all tried and failed to command the United defence in the same manner as Schmeichel before Van der Sar arrived between the posts.

Van der Sar retired from international football after Euro 2008 and, although he briefly returned to help out Oranje coach Bert van Marwijk in two 2010 World Cup qualifiers a few months later, he hung up his gloves for good after that with a national record 130 caps to his name.

Secara resmi Edwin van der Sar mengungkapkan niat mundur sebagai pemain profesional begitu musim ini berakhir.

Pernyataan kiper Manchester United berusia 40 tahun ini disampaikan melalui laman manajemen agennya. Van der Sar membela United sejak 2005 dan selalu menjadi pilihan utama dalam tim Setan Merah. Bahkan Sir Alex Ferguson memujinya sebagai kiper terbaik United sejak Peter Schmeichel.

"Saya tak bisa bilang kapan saya benar-benar membuat keputusan ini," ujar Van der Sar.

"Mungkin saja sudah terlintas dalam benak saya ketika Anne [istrinya] terserang stroke tahun lalu. Dia berjuang pulih dan kami memutuskan bertahan satu tahun lagi di Inggris dan Manchester United. Tapi begitu mulai bersiap lagi di musim kompetisi, saya mulai berpikir meninggalkan sepakbola dengan tenang."

Kiper yang akrab disapa Papi di timnas Belanda ini menolak menjadikan usia sebagai faktor utama gantung sarung tangan.

"Tidak ada hubungannya dengan usia. Saya 40 tahun, tapi saya masih fit. Lagipula keputusan itu baru mendadak dibuat."

"Jangan tanya kenapa atau bagaimana, tapi Anda akan langsung tahu. Itu saja cukup. Kini waktunya lebih banyak bercengkerama bersama keluarga meski mereka pun tidak pernah mengeluh. Semua anggota keluarga selalu berupaya fokus pada saya, tapi pada akhirnya saya harus banyak membalasnya."

Harapan Van der Sar adalah menjuarai Liga Primer Inggris sebagai kado perpisahan yang manis.

"Itu akan menjadi hadiah yang indah," imbuhnya.

"Saya tidak punya rencana masa depan. Saya berharap masih berkecimpung di dunia sepakbola. Tapi saya yakin lebih baik memikirkannya belakangan bersama istri dan anak-anak saya."

Terakhir, Van der Sar menceritakan momen emasnya bersama United yaitu ketika menjuarai Liga Champions 2008. Ketika itu, Van der Sar menahan tendangan pemain Chelsea Nicolas Anelka untuk memastikan gelar juara.

"Itulah momen terbaik saya. Penyelamatan penalti di final Liga Champions 2008 melawan Chelsea. Saya pernah melakukan penyelamatan yang lebih baik, tapi itu yang paling menentukan," tukasnya.

Tim Krul has paid tribute to retiring Manchester United keeper Edwin van der Sar.

The 40-year-old announced on Thursday that he will be hanging up his gloves at the end of the season following an impressive career which has taken in Ajax, Juventus and Fulham, as well as the last five-and-a-half years at Old Trafford.

Van der Sar also has 130 international appearances for Holland to his name - making him his country's most capped player of all time - and Newcastle keeper Krul is a big admirer.

"He (van der Sar) won the Champions League with Ajax back in 1995 and I was eight-years-old at the time," explained fellow Dutchman Krul, 22.

"I even went to see Ajax a couple of times just to see him play and he has been a great goalkeeper for many, many years.

"He has continued to break records and win European Cups, and for me he's an absolute idol.

"I actually met him a few years ago and I remember telling my parents that he was the only person I've ever been nervous about meeting.

"He took about 30 minutes of his time to speak to me and he even rang me after I made my Newcastle debut.

"He's the best all-rounder at the moment and to win 130 caps for your country says it all."

Fergie pun memberikan testimoni khusus. Baginya, Van der Sar adalah sosok kiper fantastis yang keberadaannya sulit untuk dicari penggantinya.

"Fantastis, dia adalah orang hebat, kiper profesional, ia juga punya karir yang menakjubkan," ucapnya kepada Sky Sports.

"Dia adalah contoh untuk semua orang yang ingin menjadi penjaga gawang. Edwin melalui hidup tanpa macam-macam, ia tak pernah berubah, dia punya sifat konsisten yang dimilikinya secara alami."

"Dia tak tergantikan," tukas Fergie.

Selama karirnya, Van der Sar sudah banyak meraih gelar bersama klub yang dibelanya. Ia pernah mendapatkan medali juara Liga Belanda sebanyak empat kali bersama Ajax dan tiga gelar juara Premier League bersama Manchester United.

Eric Steele, United’s goalkeeping coach, said: “The question is: can we get somebody to replace Edwin van der Sar? We could do it internally, but we have looked at the best targets and we now have a nice one, two and three who we think can fill the job.

“Edwin is going to be a very difficult man to replace. I think that penalty save against Chelsea in Moscow in 2008 [in the Champions League final] has elevated him alongside Peter Schmeichel, and that is some achievement.”

Karena alasan ingin lebih dekat dengan keluarga dan istri yang mengalami kanker, Van Der Sar sudah memutuskan untuk tak lagi memperpanjang kontraknya bersama Manchester United di akhir musim nanti. Itu akan mengakhiri karir sepakbola profesionalnya yang sudah dimulai sejak 21 tahun lalu bersama Ajax Amsterdam.

Sebelum akhirnya gantung sarung tangan, Van der Sar ingin meninggalkan catatan positif lain buat The Red Devils. Gelar juara dari kompetisi apapun akan menjadi target mantan kiper internasional Belanda itu.

"Ini belum berakhir, masih ada tiga bulan yang bisa dijalani jadi kami masih membidik yang lainnya lagi. Trofi apa (yang akan didapat) tidak masalah, itu adalah sesuatu yang Anda targetkan dan saya harap itu akan berharga pada akhirnya," sahut Van der Sar di Skysports.

Setelah bergabung dengan MU sejak tahun 2005 lalu, Van der Sar kini total sudah melakoni 245 pertandingan. Diakui eks Juventus itu, saat pertama ditarik dari Fulham dia tak berharap akan bisa bertahan lama di Old Ttrafford dan ikut memberi banyak gelar.

"Saat saya datang ke sini saya sudah gembira bisa menandatangani kontrak dua tahun dan mencoba memenangi liga sebelum pensiun. Saya beruntung bisa mendapat lebih banyak lagi dari itu dan juga memperpanjangnya menjadi lebih dari dua tahun."

Sir Alex Ferguson regards himself as hugely fortunate to have worked with two of the best goalkeepers ever - but he hopes to do better replacing Edwin van der Sar than he did finding someone to take over from Peter Schmeichel.

Van der Sar confirmed on Thursday that he will retire from football at the end of the season. Ferguson is now beginning a search for the Dutchman's successor, just as he did in 1999 when Schmeichel headed off for Sporting Lisbon.

"We hope we are better organised about it this time," said Ferguson. "There will always be a comparison between Peter and Edwin. In my time those two were the outstanding goalkeepers, not just at our club, but in their entire careers."

He added: "Look at the rich career that Edwin had; four Champions League finals, three World Cups. It was fantastic and Peter, of course, was recognised by everyone at the time as the best goalkeeper in the world. They are different personalities. But they are great characters and I have been very fortunate to have the two of them."

Having initially signed Van der Sar on a two-year contract, Ferguson could hardly have expected to retain such vast experience for six seasons.

It has coincided with one of the most productive periods in United's history, including three successive Premier League titles and a Champions League triumph in addition to one losing final and another semi-final appearance.

"Edwin's impact as a professional is the one thing I will always remember about him," said Ferguson. "He has been absolutely fantastic in all areas, quite apart aside from his ability on the football field. His training performances, his example to young players, his personality in the dressing room. He is a really special man.

"But he made the point himself, it is pointless trying to be superman into your 40s. There has to be a time for everyone in football. It is one of the sad parts of my job that you get to the stage where age takes over."

As speculation intensifies about who might arrive as the new number one - Germany's Manuel Neuer, Maarten Stekelenburg of Holland, France's Hugo Lloris and current Russia number one Igor Akinfeev are just four of the many names being mentioned - Anders Lindegaard may get his first opportunity to stake a claim at Southampton on Saturday.

Lindegaard is yet to play a competitive game for United since his arrival from Aalesunds but with Van der Sar sitting out the trip to the south coast in order to be fresh for Tuesday's Premier League encounter, he may get his chance ahead of Tomasz Kuszczak.

On Thursday the 40-year-old Manchester United man announced his retirement from the game in the summer, calling time on two sparkling decades in football.

The Dutch goalkeeper will go down in United history as one of their greatest stoppers alongside Peter Schmeichel.

In addition to helping the Red Devils to three Premier League titles, Van der Sar also played a starring role in their 2008 Champions League win, saving a Nicolas Anelka spot-kick to clinch the trophy.

"That save in Moscow is a nice moment to look back on," said the Dutchman.

"It is easier for strikers to be the hero. A goalkeeper might make an excellent save but if a forward scores in the last minute, the headlines are all for him.

"That is fair. They are there to score the goals. But Moscow was a very special moment, which will stay with me for a long time."

Whilst reflecting on his glittering career, Van der Sar expressed his surprise at signing for United after opting to move to Juventus in 1999 when Schmeichel left Old Trafford.

"I didn't imagine this would happen," he admitted.

"When I signed for United I was happy just to have one more big shot at winning a league.

"Luckily we managed to do that a couple of times and we are not finished yet. There is still room for improvement.

"I have been fortunate not to have any long-term injuries. That has prolonged my career so I can be proud of reaching 40 and still be able to play at the highest level at the biggest club in the world.

"But it would be strange if it did not get harder, mentally and physically, which is why now is a good time to bring it towards an end."

Manchester United goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar has admitted he expects to assist boss Sir Alex Ferguson in the hunt for his replacement following his retirement at the end of the season.

Van der Sar confirmed on Thursday that he would retire at the end of the current campaign, bringing an end to a stellar 20-year career.

'I think the manager will talk to me.

'Obviously you have some conversations about yourself or about other things.

'But I presume they have done some homework already because I don't think this is a big shock.

The Manchester United goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar said motivation would not be a problem following his announcement last Thursday that he would retire at the end of the season.

"I don't see motivation until the end of the season being a problem at all," the 40-year-old goalkeeper said. "There was a point last year when it was four degrees and the rain was pouring down. Ben Foster asked me whether I still wanted to do it in such rubbish weather. I said I loved it. That is still the case. I had a calf injury just after Christmas and was not able to go outside for 12 days.

"The only time I went outside was to get from the training building to the car, and then from the car to the house. After 12 days I wanted to go outside. That feeling will always be there. I want to train and I want to contribute to a team that deserves to win something."

2 penyelamatan gemilang di laga vs Wigan tadi malam , menghapus blunder yg dilakukan Van der Sar pada laga vs West Bromwich Albion beberapa bulan yg lalu :devil2:.

Kiper yg konsisten penampilannya selama beberapa tahun terakhir , walau usianya sekarang sudah menginjak kepala 4 . Adakah kiper lain yg masih bermain di level tertinggi walau sudah berusia 40 th ??? Kalau dulu , ada nama Dino Zoff dan Peter Shilton , lha sekarang ??? :-??

Has there ever been a weekend when the value of a great goalkeeper has been more starkly illustrated? On paper, United’s 4-0 win at Wigan looks like an absolute breeze. But if it wasn’t for the enduring brilliance of Edwin van der Sar, the scoreline could have been so very different.

Making saves when you’re leading 3-0 or 4-0 is one thing, but to make them when the game is still very much in the balance marks a goalkeeper out as truly influential. In the first half at the DW Stadium, Edwin made two superb stops when United were under the cosh. First, Victor Moses was bearing down on goal. In textbook fashion, the Dutchman made himself big, didn’t go to ground and the resulting shot cannoned off his shoulder.

Minutes later, there was an even better stop. Charles N’Zogbia’s lovely flick released James McCarthy in the area. In a flash, van der Sar was off his line and produced a stunning close-range block. He also kept out Maynor Figueroa’s swerving effort from distance early in the second half when the score was only 1-0.

So, there’s only one thing for it – we must stop Edwin from retiring! Paddy Crerand actually suggested to me whilst we were commentating on the match for MUTV that the big Dutchman should stay for at least another year. So let’s start the, “Edwin must stay” campaign right here. Absolutely no disrespect to Thomas Kuszczak or Anders Lindegaard but the guy is something special. I fear it’s a lost cause, though – Edwin rightly wants to go out at the top. And there is absolutely no doubting that’s where he still is.

How Arsenal must wish they had a our no.1 and the experience that he brings to our team. Wojciechy Szczesny’s howler at Wembley (although Laurent Koscielny has to take some of the blame for the confusion) means the Gunners’ ever-increasing wait for a trophy goes on. Speaking of keepers, congratulations to Ben Foster on another Man of the Match performance at Wembley. I always thought Foster would go on to become United’s number one. But I think

Manchester - Melihat penampilan Edwin van der Sar saat menghadapi Arsenal, banyak fans Manchester United yang memintanya menunda masa pensiun. Namun Van Der Sar bergeming dengan keputusannya.

Di Stadion Old Trafford, Sabtu (12/3/2011), Van Der Sar tampil prima mengawal gawang MU dari gempuran pemain-pemain Arsenal. Sejumlah penyelamatan gemilang ia buat dan gawang 'Setan Merah' pun tetap perawan sampai akhir.

Sekitar 70 ribu fans MU di Old Trafford dibuat terkagum-kagum dengan penampilan Van Der Sar yang tetap tangkas di usia 40 tahun. Beberapa peluang emas The Gunners mentah di tangan eks kiper Fulham itu.

Para penonton di stadion pun meneriakkan kalimat 'satu tahun lagi' sebagai tanda agar Van Der Sar menunda gantung sepatu. Maukah Van Der Sar memenuhi permintaan fans MU itu?

"Tidak, tentu saja tidak," jawab Van Der Sar usai pertandingan seperti yang dikutip The Sun.

Peran Van Der Sar memang sangat besar dalam partai yang dimenangi MU dengan skor 2-0 itu. Alhasil, The Red Devils pun berhak atas satu tempat di semifinal Piala FA.

"Menyenangkan bisa menolong tim dan sebagai pemain, selalu menyenangkan bila penampilan kita dihargai," jelas Van Der Sar sumringah.

Sejak bermain di Inggris tahun 2001 bersama Fulham dan bersama MU sejak 2005, Van Der Sar belum pernah menjuarai Piala FA. Van Der Sar akan sangat senang bila bisa memenanginya, apalagi ditambah dengan satu trofi lain yang sedang dikejar MU: gelar juara Liga Inggris.

"Akan sangat hebat bila kami bisa menang Piala FA. Tapi saya juga tidak keberatan bila kami memenangi trofi yang lain juga," pungkas Van Der Sar.
