Pertandingan terakhir di fase group nih, mungkin hanya partai gengsi untuk United yang telah memastikan satu tempat di babak selanjutnya, 'hanya' penentuan juara group bagi United, menang atau seri akan mengokohkan United sebagai pemuncak klaseman, sedang jika kalah bisa jadi sang serigala jerman akan menggeser United ke posisi runner up.

Untuk Wolfsburg sendiri, ini lah peluang terakhir mereka untuk tetap menjaga peluang berlaga di UCL sesi berikutnya, memiliki point 7, sama dengan CSKA Moscow (yg akan bertanding menghadapi Besiktas yg bisa jadi peluangnya lebih besar), kemenangan adalah harga mutlak yanbg harus diraih. United’s desperate defensive injury problems were only exacerbated at Upton Park - the term 'down to the bare bones' barely does the situation justice.

Sir Alex Ferguson could be without seven players for the trip to Wolfsburg on Tuesday, and the extent of the issue is measured by the fact that the United boss is anxiously waiting to see if Nemanja Vidic recovers from a bout of flu to partner Michael Carrick in the centre of defence.

Along with Vidic, Rio Ferdinand, John O’Shea, Jonny Evans, Rafael and Fabio all missed Saturday’s 4-0 win over West Ham, while Gary Neville and Wes Brown were forced off during the match to add to an already depleted rearguard.

“Losing defenders the way we are doing at the moment is a bit of a headache to us,” admitted the boss. “Nemanja Vidic was out with flu, meaning we had to put Gary Neville at centre-back and then he goes off after half an hour. Then Wes Brown came off at the end.

“I don’t know how we’re going to get a back four together for Tuesday. I’m hoping Nemanja will be OK and I will probably play Michael Carrick with him in defence.”

Carrick didn’t look out of place at centre-half against his former club, althoug Wolfsburg's forwards Edin Dzeko, Grafite and Obafemi Martins, pose a more potent threat.

“Michael came in and did very well, we were very pleased with that,” added Sir Alex. “The reason we put Michael on the bench this afternoon was to cover us in event of anything happening to the back four.

“He has the height, the composure, the pace and the experience to play there. There was an option to play Ritchie De Laet, but away from home against West Ham – it’s a difficult place to go to. I felt that an experienced player was important.

"I would actually like to have played Michael [in midfield] from the start because he’s in good form. But I felt like I had to err on the side of caution, and I’m glad I did.”

London - Problema lini belakang Manchester United bikin Sir Alex Ferguson harus putar otak untuk laga Liga Champions tengah pekan depan. Michael Carrick pun siap diplot jadi bek tengah.

Pada hari Rabu (9/12/2009) dinihari WIB, MU akan menghadapi Wolfsburg di matchday terakhir fase grup Liga Champions. Meski sudah lolos, 'Setan Merah' jelas tak mau kalah demi menjaga momentum.

Maka dari itu, MU jelas tetap harus tampil dalam bentuk terbaiknya nanti. Masalahnya, stok lini belakang MU justru sedang tipis akibat cedera pemain.

Dalam laga Liga Primer lawan West Ham, MU yang sudah harus kehilangan Nemanja Vidic sebelum kick-off lantas juga dihinggapi masalah lain seiring dengan masalah yang dialami Gary Neville dan Wes Brown.

"Kami kehilangan enam pemain sebelum pertandingan, Gary Neville harus ditarik keluar setelah setengah jam dan kemudian Wes Brown. Aku harap Vidic akan bugar untuk Rabu nanti. Saat ini dia absen karena flu," ungkap Fergie di Sky Sports.

Setelah Neville yang jadi bek tengah di laga lawan West Ham ditarik keluar, ketiadaan pemain belakang bikin Carrick dimasukkan untuk menggantikannya. Fergie menilai penampilan gelandang asal Inggris itu cukup oke sehingga berencana melakukannya lagi.

"Kami mungkin akan kembali memainkan Michael Carrick. Aku pikir dia tampil amat bagus. Tingginya cukup dan dia punya ketenangan," lugas Fergie menganalisa Carrick yang berpostur 1,83 m/70,6 kg tersebut.

Manchester United's injury crisis has become so desperate that the son of chief executive David Gill has been called up for tomorrow's clash with Wolfsburg.

United are without eight senior defenders - Rio Ferdinand, Nemanja Vidic, Wes Brown, Gary Neville, Rafael, Fabio, John O’Shea and Jonny Evans - and have been forced to turn to youth for the Champions League match in Germany.

Included in the squad is OIiver Gill, son of David Gill. The defender, described as 'no-nonsense' by the club, has been registered as a last-minute squad member.

UEFA regulations allow additional players who have been at the club for two years or more.

Gill has been with United's academy since the age of 12 and counts Rio Ferdinand as his footballing hero.

'He's the best player in his position in the world and on the few occasions I have been lucky enough to get to talk to him he's been very positive and supportive,' he once said before adding that his relationship with his father will have no bearing on his future in the game.

'Nobody takes any notice of my relationship to my Dad. I've been in the academy for six years and I think most people have simply forgotten. It's just not the way Manchester United do things.'

Young midfielders Cameron Stewart, Matty James, Magnus Eikrem and Oliver Norwood were also on the flight out of Manchester on Monday morning.

Wayne Rooney, Ryan Giggs, Dimitar Berbatov and Federico Macheda were all also left behind with one eye on this weekend’s Premier League clash with Aston Villa.

MANCHESTER: Manchester United have been left with just one regular defender for Tuesday's Champions League tie with Wolfsburg after Nemanja Vidic failed to recover from flu in time to travel to Germany.

The Serbian centreback was left at home along with Gary Neville and Wes Brown, who both suffered injuries in Saturday's 4-0 win at West Ham, longer-term absentees Rio Ferdinand, John O'Shea and Jonny Evans, and Brazilian twins Fabio and Rafael da Silva.

France left-back Patrice Evra is the last first-team defender standing and United manager Sir Alex Ferguson is resigned to fielding a makeshift back four against the German champions.

Michael Carrick is expected to stand in in central defence, as he did after Neville went off on Saturday, and his fellow midfielder Darron Gibson is also able to operate at the back.

Alternatively, Ferguson could gamble on handing a debut to Oliver Gill, the 19-year-old son of United's chief executive David, who is a specialist defender but has made only nine appearances for the reserves this season.

United, who need a point to ensure they finish top of their group, have also opted to travel without Wayne Rooney, Dimitar Berbatov and Ryan Giggs while first-choice goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar remains sidelined by injury.

Sir Alex Ferguson arrived in Germany today accompanied by one fit and established defender and facing the worst injury crisis in all his years at Old Trafford. Thirteen of Manchester United's first-team squad are injured and while several of those players are due to return against Aston Villa on Saturday, Rio Ferdinand is out indefinitely and Ferguson tonight confirmed that Jonny Evans and John O'Shea will not play again this year. United's resources are so stretched that Oliver Gill, the teenage son of the club's chief executive, David Gill, and a rookie centre-half, will be on the bench for the Champions League match against Wolfsburg.

"Wes Brown will be fit for Saturday but Evans and O'Shea will not be back [until] January," said United's manager, before his skeleton squad – of just 19 players – trained at the Volkswagen Arena. "There's no good news when you've got all these players injured. I've got a lot of thinking to do about the team selection."

At least Ferguson has retained a sense of humour. Asked if he was concerned that Patrice Evra would be his only recognised defender, he said: "Well, it's worth trying going with one defender. Manchester United are always first at doing something, so we'll try that one tomorrow. It's easy to organise one person. Seriously, we know we have a difficult task. I need a back four that can unite. And good passing ability is going to be important, considering we don't have natural centre-backs."

Evra, normally a left-back, is likely to partner Michael Carrick in central defence with Darren Fletcher at right-back and, possibly, Ji-Sung Park at left-back. Gill, until recently a pupil at Manchester Grammar School, could play a part.

"Oliver's a young boy," said Ferguson who may also use Oliver Norwood, Cameron Stewart, Matty James and Magnus Eikrem. "He's 19 now but it's his first year as a professional after combining his education with playing for the last two years. He's decided to take the big step and go into full-time professional football – that's brave and we applaud him for it."

Gill has made nine appearances for the reserves this season. "Oliver is starting to develop physically," Ferguson said. "At first he was very rakish and gangly and lacked strength. But he's starting to come together in terms of physique. He's doing very well. Who his father is doesn't concern me. If Oliver's good enough, he plays. I had a son [Darren] who played for me for four or five years and he was treated exactly the same as any other player. It will be the same for Oliver."

Ferguson's assistant, Mike Phelan, has hinted that United are interested in Edin Dzeko, Wolsburg's highly rated Bosnian centre-forward, but the manager was circumspect. "There is nothing happening at this moment in time concerning Dzeko," he said.

United have qualified for the Champions League knockout phase but some fans are concerned they may fail to secure the point that would guarantee first place in Group B. Ferguson, who left Wayne Rooney at home to nurse "a hamstring" and hopes the England striker will be fit to face Villa, when Nemanja Vidic should also return, said: "I'm not sure whether coming first or second in the group really matters. You're going to face strong teams either way, Real Madrid or Barcelona, Inter or AC Milan, they're all quality, all much of a muchness. And I have to look at the bigger picture, the Premier League games we have coming up."

If Villa are understandably a higher priority than a Wolfsburg side still capable of reaching the latter stages, Ferguson will not want to fly home embarrassed. "I'd never heard of Wolfsburg before they won the Bundesliga last year," he said. "But we have a lot of thinking to do because this is a big game for them. And they will be delighted we have so many injuries."

Paul Scholes hinted such complacency could be ill advised. "We have talented players who can play anywhere," said the United midfielder. "And although Wolfsburg have two excellent forwards in Dzeko and Grafite who score a lot of goals, they also concede a lot." Michael Owen, Ferguson's sole fit established forward, will hope to prove him right.

London - Manchester United tak diperkuat pemain utamanya di barisan pertahanan saat bertandang ke Jerman. Hanya satu pemain utama saja yang ikut guna menghadapi VfL Wolfsburg, Rabu (9/12/2009).

Nama bek terakhir yang masuk dalam daftar cedera adalah Nemanja Vidic yang masih belum pulih dari sakitnya. Alhasil hanya Patrice Evra saja yang merupakan pemain utama belakang yang ikut dalam 19 pemain Alex Ferguson.

Sementara Rio Ferdinand, Wes Brown, Gary Neville, Rafael, Fabio, John O'Shea dan Jonny Evans semuanya absen karena cedera atau sakit. Tentu saja kondisi ini membuka peluang bagi pemain muda Oliver Gill untuk tampil di laga ini.

Meski demikian, Ferguson menegaskan bahwa Gill dimainkan bukan karena dia adalah anak dari Kepala Eksekutif MU David Gill. "Itu bukan saya. Jika dia cukup baik, dia akan bermain," kata manajer MU ini seperti dilansir Sky.

Nama Oliver disertakan karena manajer Sir Alex Ferguson kekurangan pemain belakang yang dihantam badai cedera. Namun embel-embel 'anak bos' tidak akan membuat Oliver diistimewakan.

Fergie -sapaan Ferguson- berjanji tidak akan memperlakukannya berbeda dengan pemain lain.

So his own boss David Gill's son, Oliver, gets a shock call-up.

Fergie insisted he was not showing favouritism. He said: "If he's good enough, he plays.

"That's the name of the game. My son Darren played for me for four or five years.

"He was treated the same as any other player and Oliver will be treated the same way."

Defenders John O'Shea and Jonny Evans were last night ruled out until the New Year, adding to the United chief's injury nightmare.

Fergie has resorted to desperate measures and will pick a bunch of unknowns at Wolfsburg.

Gill - a full-back or centre-back - signed a professional contract a year ago, having been in the club's academy since he was 12.

He has made nine appearances in the reserves this season.

He said: "I really want to give football my best shot. I am good enough to have a professional career at some level.

"Ideally that would be with Manchester United but realistically the competition is very strong and few players from the academy make it into one of the world's top club sides."

Ollie reckons most people at Old Trafford do not link him with his powerful dad.

He said: "Nobody takes any notice of my relationship to my dad. I've been in the academy for six years and most people have simply forgotten. It's just not the way Manchester United do things."

Ferguson added: "He's a young boy. It's his first year as a professional and he's been combining education with training in the last couple of years.

"He's 19 now and has decided to take the big step forward and we admire him for that.

"Over the last year or so, he is developing physically. He was rakish and gangly and lacked physical strength but he has done well, the boy.

"He is one of a few young players we have here and is doing very well."

BERLIN: German champions Wolfsburg are hoping to take advantage of Manchester United’s growing casualty list when they take on the English giant today for a place in the Champions League’s last 16.

Alex Ferguson’s formidable side has earned a reputation as away-day specialists in Europe during the past three seasons, going unbeaten in 14 matches, apart from the 2008 and 2009 finals played at neutral venues.

United’s 23-match undefeated home run was ended by Turkey’s Besiktas in their last European game, leaving the three-time European champions on 10 points, three above their German hosts and CSKA Moscow.

United are already through, but a draw in Germany would guarantee them a place in the first knockout round as group winners, but Ferguson admits he is struggling for options in defence.

Both defenders Wes Brown and Gary Neville limped off in the 4-0 win at West Ham leaving the Reds with eight defenders struggling to be fit for Wolfsburg.

“I don’t know where I’m going to get a back four for Tuesday,” Ferguson said.

“The injuries in defence are becoming a bit of a headache to us.”

Wolfsburg, meanwhile, must win to be sure of going through as group runners-up and hope Moscow struggle against Besiktas in Turkey.

United had to come from behind to defeat Wolfsburg 2-1 at Old Trafford in September after Wolves’ Edin Dzeko scored an early goal before Ryan Giggs and Michael Carrick netted to save United’s blushes.

Manchester United assistant manager Mike Phelan has hinted that the Premier League champions could make a move to sign Dzeko and the 23-year-old has 14 goals in 23 appearances for his country Bosnia and Herzegovina his country.

“He has stature, his feet are good and he is producing some good performances. I am sure everybody has looked at him,” said Phelan.

Wolfsburg, who warmed up for the United test by coming from behind to draw 2-2 draw with Freiburg on Saturday, have taken four points from their two Group B home games so far, but United will pose their toughest test yet.

United last lost as the away team in a UEFA Champions League tie when they succumbed 3-0 at AC Milan in the 2006-07 semi-finals.

Since then, they have recorded seven wins and seven draws, including 1-0 successes at Besiktas and CSKA this term.

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson believes that it will not matter whether his side finish first or second in Group B of the Champions League.

The Old Trafford outfit need a point against Wolfsburg on Tuesday to ensure they finish at the top, but the Scot insists that it will make no difference to their aspirations of conquering Europe.

"Looking at the groups, I'm not sure whether being top or second actually matters," Ferguson is quoted in The Sun as saying.

"That boosts us because, if we finish second, it doesn't matter.

"You have one group with AC Milan and Real Madrid, another with Juventus, Bordeaux and Bayern Munich and another with Inter Milan, Rubin Kazan and Barcelona.

"If you get one of those teams, it's much of a muchness. The only advantage is playing the second leg at home."

Due to United's injury woes, particularly in defence, the gaffer believes that the focus is now on getting it right in the Premier League, since a spot in the last 16 of Europe's elite has already been guaranteed.

"At this stage, my concern is Saturday and future league games," he added.

Ferguson then addressed his defensive worries, joking: "It's worth trying [to play only] one defender.

"Manchester United are always the first at doing something, so we'll try! It's easy to organise one person!

"We have a difficult task. I need to get a back four who can unite together and give us good organisation and good passing ability - that's important given we don't have natural centre-backs."

Wolfsburg will be without Obafemi Martins who is sidelined until January with a shin problem, while Jonathan Santana (thigh) and Alexander Madlung (calf) will also be absent.

The home side have scored more goals than United in their European campaign so far although they are not in the best run of form - having not won in their last four games.

Ferguson will have no less than 15 players unavailable for the trip, which has little consequence to United other than determining whether they will qualify in first or second place.

And even this does not appear to concern Ferguson, who will pick his team with the busy upcoming domestic schedule in mind.

"And I have to look at the bigger picture, the Premier League games we have coming up."

Wolfsburg striker Grafite admits his side are desperate to prove a point against Manchester United on Tuesday night.

The Bundesliga outfit take on the Premier League champions in the Champions League at the Volkswagen Arena with United triumphing 2-1 at Old Trafford earlier in the competition.

One point will be enough for the Red Devils to finish top of Group B although Wolfsburg could overtake them with a win, but the Germans could potentially miss out on second spot to Russian side CSKA Moscow.

Grafite, who returns to European action after a two-match suspension, is determined to help his team qualify for the knockout stages of the competition and believes Wolfsburg were unlucky to come away with nothing in their last game against United.

"I return to the Champions League after the punishment and I want to score a goal against United," he told skysports.com.

"We left Old Trafford with an unhappy face because we deserved at least one point.

"In this group we have deserved more points and the qualification for the following round. We are motivated by this and by the enormous importance for our club.

"For Wolfsburg to qualify from the first phase in our debut in this competition is an incredible success."

United have been hit by a number of injuries and are without 15 players for the game, Patrice Evra being the only recognised senior defender.

However, Grafite is playing down Sir Alex Ferguson's injury problems and says it will still be a massive test.

"They suffer some injuries but that is not too significant - Man Utd possesses a sensational squad and all players are dangerous and able to win in any venue," he added.

"Always United are a dangerous squad and I do not believe they arrived for a holiday in Germany. Wolfsburg need to play very well to get the victory.

Much has been made over Manchester United ’s interest in Edin Dzeko in the build-up to the Champions League match at Wolfsburg tonight.

In truth though, the player the Red Devils need to keep an eye on is fellow Bosnia-Herzegovina international, playmaker Zvjezdan Misimovic .

The 27-year-old midfielder was the catalyst behind Wolfsburg’s Bundesliga title success last season despite the fact that Dzeko and Grafite received many of the plaudits for their goal scoring exploits.

In 41 matches last season, Misimovic scored 10 goals and provided 20 assists in 41 matches in the Bundesliga and the Europa League. In 2008/2009, Misimovic set a new record for the number of assists in a Bundesliga season.

This season Misimovic has continued to impress, scoring seven goals and providing six assists in 20 appearances so far. He has two good feet and is a very creative player who has the ability to play a striker in on goal.

Name: Magnus Eikrem
Age: 19
Position: Midfielder
Main attributes: Dead ball specialist, terrific eye for a killer pass
First team experience: Magnus has been on the first team bench this term, against Wolves in the Carling Cup, but is yet to make it onto the field.
His season so far: The Norwegian's first team call-up was the reward for an excellent campaign in the Reserves so far. Shifted from right-wing to the centre of midfield, Magnus’ playmaking skills have been given the perfect platform, despite his slight frame. And, whether providing or going for goal himself, his set plays are deadly accurate.

Michael Owen grabbed a hat-trick as Manchester United overcame the absence of 14 players to record a memorable win over German champions Wolfsburg.

The victory was a record 15th away game unbeaten in the Champions League and only United's third in 10 attempts on German soil.

More importantly, it confirms a seeding in the knockout round draw a week on Friday which in itself does not guarantee easier opposition but at least ensured Old Trafford will host a second leg rather than a first.

Sir Alex Ferguson went for Michael Carrick and Darren Fletcher as his central defensive combination as his injury-hit Manchester United side tackled Wolfsburg looking to secure top spot in Champions League Group B.

With 12 players missing through injury, Ryan Giggs suspended and Ritchie De Laet ineligible, Ferguson was left to select a scratch side that also included Park Ji-sung at right-back.

Tomasz Kuszczak also kept his place in goal with United needing to keep out Erin Dzeko and company to collect the point required to finish top, or hope CSKA Moscow beat Besiktas in Istanbul.

Instead of taking up an orthodox full-back position, Park was handed a wing-back role, with Nani on the other side.

Park was soon sending in a searching cross too, which Wolfsburg cleared, before stand-in skipper Patrice Evra won a free-kick after a wrestling match with Grafite.

The Brazilian was soon shooting from the edge of the area, although Kuszczak was not really tested to make a save to his right.

With Wolfsburg enjoying the bulk of possession, it soon became clear if United were to cause any damage they would do so on the break.

Zvjezdan Misimovic was next to try his luck but again, Kuszczak got right behind a shot that took a minor deflection on its way through.

United were reasonably measured in possession themselves, with Darron Gibson discovering Park to be a useful outlet as he hugged the touchline, picking out the South Korean with a succession of crossfield passes.

Carrick was lucky to get away with a rash sliding tackle which took down Makoto Hasebe in the box, then Gibson, scorer of three memorable goals in the last week, failed to find the target from 25 yards after being given an opportunity by Paul Scholes.

Christian Gentner drove a shot into Evra as Wolfsburg picked up the initiative once more then, after Kuszczak had come for a corner and got nowhere near, Andrea Barzagli sent a free header fizzing over the bar when he really should have done better.

Misimovic was also off target when Sascha Riether crossed to the far post after charging forward on the overlap.

Dzeko collected Hasebe's cross-field pass and stepped inside Fletcher. But the angle was always against the Bosnian and he drove into the side-netting.

United had to make the most of what possession they did get, so Nani stepping inside Riether, then losing the ball on an uneven surface did not endear him to Michael Owen, who had pulled into space on the far side of the box.

Danny Welbeck had the ball in the net on the half hour but the youngster had strayed offside before collecting Anderson's pin-point through ball.

Kuszczak punched Gentner's cross clear as Dzeko closed in before he made a flying stop at his near post as Hasebe went for goal.

Having soaked up so much pressure, United hit their hosts with the ultimate sucker punch a minute before the break.

Owen might not be the tallest but he still knows how to find space.

And when Nani floated over a cross from the left, the former Liverpool hit-man found enough room to guide a header into the bottom corner.

Welbeck's under-hit lay-off meant Scholes did not have enough time to threaten the home goal on United's first foray forward of the second period.

But really, the test was to keep Wolfsburg out, the Red Devils knowing they had a safety net to rely on.

Still, Evra was at full stretch to cut out a Gentner's pass intended for Dzeko, then a sliding tackle by Anderson stopped Misimovic in his tracks.

Grafite was halted by a very marginal offside call as he burst clear of a United defence which now had Park dropping further back.

Evra intercepted Riether's cross at the cost of a corner, then the Frenchman booted clear when Dzeko failed to get clean contact on the set piece.

Ferguson must have expected the bombardment but the Scot must have been equally delighted with his side's tenacious response.

Carrick hammered away Marcel Schafer's cross but the respite proved to be shortlived as the full-back once again attacked Park down the left and this time whipped over a cross that invited a close range finish once Dzeko had got between Carrick and Evra.

Now United were living on their nerves and twice needed the assistance of an offside flag to keep the German champions at bay.

With 17 minutes remaining, Ferguson introduced Antonio Valencia and Gabriel Obertan for Nani and Welbeck, which meant his remaining outfield substitutes did not have a single first-team appearance between them.

Dzeko brought another smart save out of Kuszczak and Ricardo Costa headed the corner over as the clock continued to tick down.

A brilliant tackle by Evra denied Karim Ziani as the game entered its final 10 minutes.

United's fate was still hanging in the balance though. That was until Obertan weaved majestically through two attempted tackles and drilled a cross to the far post where Owen was waiting to tap home.

There was still time for Owen to add a third as he streaked clear of the home defence to complete his hat-trick.

Bosnian striker Edin Dzeko levelled on 56 minutes with a bullet header from close range following a superb ball into the danger area by defender Marcel Schaefer, but Owen was on hand after 83 minutes to slot home at the far post and the striker sealed the win with a crafty finish in added time.

Victory sent United through to the knockout stage as Group B winners. Wolfsburg’s consolation is a Europa League last 32 knockout stage place after finishing third in the group.

MANCHESTER United manager Sir Alex Ferguson saluted "fantastic" Michael Owen after the striker’s hat-trick helped the Reds triumph 3-1 at Wolfsburg to finish top of Champions League Group B.

Owen’s first treble for the club helped United overcome the absence of 14 players to record a memorable win over the German champions.

Asked about the former Liverpool forward’s contribution, Ferguson said on Sky Sports 2: “Fantastic. You know what he is. In the penalty box, he’s on the shoulder, making runs across defenders... the timing of the runs is fantastic and I’m really pleased for him.”

The victory was a record 15th away game unbeaten in the Champions League and only United’s third in 10 attempts on German soil.

Ferguson was also satisfied with how the rest of his makeshift team performed.

“There’s players with quality there. You’ve got to trust them. They’re doing their jobs and proving it tonight again.

“They’ve applied themselves and that’s important.”

Ferguson admitted his side had been fortunate not to concede a first-half penalty, however.

“It looks as if it was a penalty,” said the Scot. “Maybe we were a bit lucky there but sometimes you need a bit of luck in any game.

“Our control in the first half was very good but their threat towards the end with their speed on the counter-attack was very good.”

Needing a point to secure top spot in Champions League Group B, United flattened their hosts even though they had 14 senior players missing. The result means Ferguson's men will avoid many of Europe's biggest names including Real Madrid, in the first knockout round as well as playing the second leg at home. And for that they have Owen to thank.

The former Liverpool frontman has not made quite the impression many people expected when he arrived from Newcastle in the summer. But the 29-year-old has now taken his tally to seven and Ferguson said: "It was a fantastic performance. Michael's finishing and positional play were superb.

"I made the point some weeks ago that his training performances have improved steadily. I have had no worries about him. Obviously in some games recently we have only played with one striker and Wayne Rooney has been it. Tonight we used a different system.

"The evidence of a player is always on the football field and Michael has given us that this evening. He has proved his worth and I am delighted with his performance.''

Ferguson could have added Michael Carrick and Darren Fletcher to his eulogy. Pressed into emergency service as defenders in a three-man rearguard that also included Patrice Evra, the pair stood firm in the face of severe Wolfsburg pressure.

Ferguson does expect strikers Dimitar Berbatov and Rooney to be fit for Saturday's encounter with Aston Villa along with Ryan Giggs, the only member of the 14 to be rested. Crucially, Nemanja Vidic has recovered from the flu virus that kept him at home.

"Our defence will be Fletcher, Carrick, Vidic and Evra,'' confirmed Ferguson, his statement suggesting that Wes Brown will not have recovered from a hamstring injury as he had hoped. If Wolfsburg had gone in front it would have made it very difficult for us,'' said Ferguson.

"In that instance I do not know whether we would have persisted with the system we used. I just felt it was the best way to try and keep them out because Wolfsburg are a good attacking team. I felt we would get chances on the counter-attack and thankfully that is what happened.''

Carrick slid into action on 13 minutes - and duly upended Makoto Hasebe inside the area. Now, either the referee couldn’t believe he had seen such a poor challenge, or he gave the stand-in centre back the benefit of the doubt, but either way there was no spot kick. Andrea Barzagu and Zvjezdan Misimovic then missed unmarked headers as United’s defensive understudies, somehow, held out.

Fletcher, Carrick and Evra looked more at home as the game progressed, just like wing back duo Nani and Park, after having initially been caught somewhere between defence and attack, just usually not with the ball. But they warmed to their task nicely, with the Portugal international producing the telling moment of the first half when he delivered the perfect cross for Michael Owen to guide home his header.

And just when it looked like new careers beckoned for United’s stand-ins, up popped Edin Dzeko to boom home a header from close range and leave Carrick in no man’s land. But United, despite their injury-blighted team, hadn’t come for a draw and Ferguson took off Nani, and asked Park to tuck in at right back to allow the attacking instincts of substitutes Antonio Valencia and Gabriel Obertan to come to the fore. And didn’t they just, with Obertan’s silky skills setting up Owen for his second goal of the night. The (former?) England man will take the plaudits for his hat-trick but, for Fletcher, Carrick, Evra and Co, it was very much job done.

Bahkan gw pun bingung ini formasinya sebetulnya 4-4-2 apa 3-5-2 sih? Karna Park n Scholes itu seperti siluman, Scholes lbh sering jd breaker di tengah, dan Park seperti sayap kanan karna lbh sering membantu menyerang dibandingkan bertahan ya ga heran sih karna mentalnya memang menjebol gawang.

Dan ternyata United lbh menguasai permainan di babak 1 yg akhirnya sblm jeda turun minum, Owen mampu mencetak goal melalui heading memanfaatkan umpan crossing Nani yg akhirnya bermain lagi meski peformanya jeblok namun tertutup oleh assitnya. Babak ke 2 Wolfsburg sgt memanfaatkan sektor kiri pertahanan United yg sering kosong penghuni dmn akhirnya Dzeko dapat memanfaatkan crossing dgn mencetak goal utk menyamakan kedudukan. Stlh goal Dzeko, Wolfsburg yg awalnya bermain hati2 mulai menemukan kepercayaan diri untuk lbh keluar menyerang dan menekan United, hal tersebut dpt dilihat dari corner yg mereka dapatkan 10 dibandingkan dengan United yg hanya 1.

Namun karna nafsu menyerang demi meraih kemenangan karna hanya dengan kemenangan maka Wolfsburg dapat menemani United lolos ke babak knock out terlebih lagi karna CSKA Moscow meraih kemenangan di Intanbul melawan Besiktas pada waktu bersamaan, Wolfsburg lupa bertahan. SAF yg melihat situasi langsung melakukan pergantian pemain untuk dapat memanfaatkan situasi dengan memaksimalkan serang balik. Obertan masuk menggantikan Welbeck dan Valencia menggantikan Nani yg mengalami cedera. Dengan pergantian tersebut maka SAF hanya menempatkan Owen sendirian di depan dgn Obertan, Valencia dan Anderson sbg support.

Ternyata taktik yg diterpkan SAF terbukti ampuh, Obertan mampu merepotkan sektor kanan pertahanan Wolfsburg yg ditinggal oleh ??? melalui aksi individual yang sungguh mempesona dengan mengecoh setidaknya 3 pemain Wolfsburg di dalam kotak penalty Wolfsburg lalu memberikan umpan kepada Owen yg berdiri tanpa kawalan untuk mencetak goal (forget about CR we now have Obertan). Wolfsburg yang tidak ingin di permalukan oleh United didepan pendukungnya sendiri langsung melakukan inisiatif serangan namun lagi2 United mampu memanfaatkan pertahanan Wolfsburg yg melompong dengan melakukan serang balik yang lagi2 melalui umpan terebosan Obertan di sektor kanan pertahanan Wolfsburg kepada Owen dengan mencetak goal melalui solo run dengan diakhiri cip yg caem untuk menjadikan kedudukan 3-1 untuk United yg sekaligus merupakan hattrick pertama Owen bagi United.

Owen memang telah mencuri panggungnya Dzeko, seperti kita ketahui sebelum match semalam berita transfer yg ramai yang mengaitkan Dzeko merupakan salah satu pemain incaran utama SAF pd bursa transfer January nanti. Nyatanya Owen menunjukan kualitas dirinya sbg predator wahid dengan memberikan pesan kepada SAF "who needs Dzeko when you have Owen". Mungkin memang Owen yg mencetak hattrick namun credit besar harus diberikan kepada barisan pertahanan United yg digalang oleh Flecther, Carrick dan Evra yg pd match ini menjadi captain. Mereka mampu memberikan rasa aman dengan membuat para pemain Wolfsburg frustasi terutama Dzeko yg ingin menunjukkan kualitasnya sbg salah satu striker terbaik Eropa skerang ini. Perhatian terbesar ditujukan kepada duet bek tengah United yaitu Fletcher dan Carrick yg merupakan pemain gelandang mampu menghadirkan pertahanan yg solid dan sama sekali tidak kikuk.

Duet Carrick - Fletcher sebagai CB.... menurut gw untuk one on one atau marking pemain lawan gw rasa mereka masih mampu dan bisa bermain dengan bagus sebagai Center Back dadakan. Namun untuk antisipasi bola crossing... serem... Gol Dzeko dari bola crossing, selain itu juga beberapa kali ada kesempatan pemain Wolfsburg free header tanpa kawalan. Memang bisa dimaklumi lah karena sebagai gelandang emang kemampuan mereka dalam bertahan lebih kepada zona marking atau menempel pemain lawan.

Pokoknya kemarin serem aja liat bola2 crossing Wolfsburg, koordinasi lini belakang dalam memotong bola crossing kacau. Sering carrick atau fletcher "miss" dalam header dan meninggalkan pemain wolfsburg dalam posisi tanpa kawalan untuk melakukan header...

WOLFSBURG, KOMPAS.com - Pelatih Manchester United (MU), Sir Alex Ferguson, memang kadang-kadang berjudi. Bahkan, saat di pesawat dia pernah berjudi dengan para pemainnya. Namun untuk mengatur strategi, baru kali ini dia melakukan perjudian besar saat MU bertandang ke kandang Wolfsburg dalam partai terakhir Liga Champions Grup B.

Ini jelas bukan karena iseng karena kesukaannya berjudi. Keadaan memaksa Fergie melakukan hal itu. Betapa tidak, "Setan Merah" datang ke kandang Wolfsburg tanpa 14 pemain utamanya.

Di lini belakang, hanya Patrice Evra yang bisa tampil. Gary Neville, Rio Ferdinand, Nemanja Vidic, Wes Brown, dan John O'Shea cedera dan sakit. Ryan Giggs, Dimitar Berbatov, dan Wayne Rooney kurang fit. Demikian juga dengan Jonny Evans, serta si kembar Fabio dan Rafael da Silva.

Sebuah kondisi yang sangat memilukan buat MU. Maka, Ferguson pun terpaksa berjudi. Dia memakai formasi 3-5-2 yang sudah lama tak pernah dia pakai.

"Mengubah sistem permainan langkah yang sangat riskan. Apalagi, Wolfsburg memasang dua striker berbahaya, Edin Dzeko dan Grafite. Saya berpikir, memakai tiga defender akan jadi pilihan terbaik," kata Ferguson.

Benar juga. Ferguson memakai formasi yang tak biasa buat MU itu, dengan susunan pemain yang aneh pula. Michael Carrick dan Darren Fletcher yang selama ini menjadi gelandang, ditugaskan sebagai defender. Mereka menemani Evra.

Agar pertahanan kuat, dia memasang lima gelandang. Mereka adalah Anderson, Paul Scholes, Darron Gibson, Nani, dan Park Ji Sung. Sedangkan di depan Ferguson memasang Michael Owen dan Danny Welbeck.

Perjudian 3-5-2 yang duku banyak dipakai klub Jerman itu, sempat kagok juga. Tapi, mereka setidaknya mampu menahan gempuran dari Wolfsburg. Bahkan, MU mampu membangun serangan juga dengan baik. Dan, pada menit ke-44 Michael Owen membawa MU unggul lebih dulu.

Memasuki babak kedua, MU sempat kaget oleh gol Edin Dzeko. Namun, MU mampu menguasai diri dan justru lebih banyak menguasai bola, yakni n53 persen berbanding 47 persen. Meski demikian, Wolfsburg lebih banyak melakukan tendangan ke gawang, 19 kali. Sedangkan MU hanya 10 kali.

Namun, efektivitas MU jauh lebih baik. Sehingga, serangan mereka menambah dua gol sekaligus menandai hat-trick Owen. MU pun menang 3-1. Prestasi yang membanggakan dan memuaskan, mengingat kemenangan di kandang lawan dan dalam kondisi amat krisis pemain.

Perjudian Ferguson benar-benar sukses. Dia justru merasa mendapat pengetahuan baru dari timnya sendiri. Tapi, jelas dia tak akan berani terus-terusan berjudi seperti ini. (*)
