MANCHESTER UNITED
Ben Foster - 5 - Shaky all round. Perhaps could have claimed under threat from Drogba and almost certainly should have done better to prevent Lampard putting Chelsea in the lead.
John O'Shea - 7 - Showed good touch early on and confidence up and down his flank.
Jonny Evans - 7 - Looks like carrying on his impressive form from last season into this one. Very solid and dealt with the threat of Drogba quite well.
Rio Ferdinand - 7 - A bit off the pace, but didn't let it show too often in what was generally a comfortable performance.
Patrice Evra - 7 - The center of attention. He was outstanding for the majority of the game, and was controversially fouled after which he was down and out and Chelsea went on to score. Played an eventual part in United losing the encounter with his penalty in the shootout, which made Gareth Southgate's look like vintage Zidane.
Ji-sung Park - 5 - Quite simply lacked finesse when it mattered. He missed a chance under difficult circumstances early on, but from then on, as United played their deft touches going forward, far too many of his were misplaced.
Michael Carrick - 6 - Not bad, but not good enough. There will be a vast amount of onus placed on Carrick's shoulder's to be United's heartbeat from center midfield all season, and while he enjoyed a fruitful and fairly carefree opening 25 minutes, when Chelsea began to squeeze, he struggled to make an impact.
Darren Fletcher - 7 - Tracked Lampard well early on and had a good shot of his own when at his most confident. A solid outing.
Nani - 7 - Certainly did his best Cristiano Ronaldo impression on the afternoon, full of running, skill, goal-threat and, for good measure, a sweetly struck opening goal from outside the area. He did, though, let Carvalho go to head home the equalizer.
Dimitar Berbatov - 7 - Showed great touch and more work rate than he is often credited with, but never quite hit top gear or got into the box to really make his classy touches count in front of goal.
Wayne Rooney - 8 - Already looks a little more like the Rooney of which every England fan has been dreaming. A relentless forward free role, always classy in possession and perhaps his only flaw was a lack of a consistent goal threat. Just to prove a point, then, he showed quite incredible composure to latch onto a Giggs throughball and stick a left-footed effort past Petr Cech at the death to take the game to penalties.
Substitutes
Luis Antonio Valencia - 6 - The new signing looked short of pace and ideas. Certainly had the work rate to put in a solid shift down the right flank, but not a lot more beyond that.
Ryan Giggs - 7 - Played a delightful through ball for Rooney, from which he equalized, but disappointed with an abysmal penalty at the beginning of the shootout.
Michael Owen - 6 - Certainly eager - maybe a little too eager - to prove himself in his first competitive game for United. A couple of inches away from potentially heading home from a Giggs set-piece, though.
Paul Scholes - 6 - Some good distribution, as always, in his brief cameo.
Fabio da Silva - 7 - Looked full of running and smart in possession, though not overly involved during his short appearance.

6 Nani: Did okay and had one trademark thunderbolt stopped but also got bruised and was subbed at half time

Foster: Two excellent saves at key times from Koumas and Rodallega helped set Reds up 8
Neville: Stuck rigidly to the task of keeping Koumas quiet and it worked 6

Evans: Stable partner to Vidic and with Wigan only playing one up wasn’t unduly troubled 6
Evra: Booked but otherwise not a great deal to trouble him 6
Valencia: Hadn’t done much for old support to wish he’d stayed until he expertly set Rooney up for breakthrough 6
Fletcher: Caught in possession at times but ensured the midfield not overwhelmed 6
Scholes: A typical booking for rash tackle and an awful miss. It wasn’t his day overall 6
Nani: Couldn’t get a cross or corner past first man in first half but finished with a flourish with a goal and nice set up for Owen 6
Rooney: Tempting to ask already where United would be without him 8

Foster: Should have smashed clearance into back row for City's first goal and beaten on near post for last 5
O'Shea: Was shocked by Bellamy's goal and had a mixed battle with the Welshman 5
Ferdinand: Didn't react to Tevez's ability to chase down balls for City's first and awful slack lob set up final equaliser 5
Vidic: With only one striker to handle between two he wasn't able to stamp himself on game 6
Evra: The sideshow tangle between him and Wright-Phillips was an enthralling match up 7
Park: Didn't hurt City's arguable Achilles heel Bridge enough and shooting didn't damage Blues either 6
Fletcher: Patches when he was dominant in midfield and times when out of tune but his two-goal effort won the day 8
Anderson: When De Jong was on top in first half he hardly showed but he got his foot in the door in second 7
Giggs: A key man in for the Reds - especially the goals - and energised the side in second half 9
Rooney: Started off like a train with opener but then was absent from action too often 7
Berbatov: Had chances to be derby hero but gave Given every chance to be a hero 6

O’Shea: Didn’t have much opposition so a comfortable outing and a well steered in goal 6
Ferdinand: Didn’t let his derby clanger affect him back to more like old self 7
Vidic: Only one striker to deal with and he played his part in mopping up limited threat 7
Evra: Right winger Lawrence was Stoke’s liveliest player and that was dealt with well 6

Fletcher: Great ball to Giggs to set up goal and a busy partner to Scholes 7
Scholes: Bossed the midfield completely. His persistence meant United stayed on top 9

6 Kuszczak: The Pole was a touch static for Wolfburg's goal but generally handled well
6 O'Shea: The Germans didn't get much joy down his channel as the Irishman was solid
5 Ferdinand: When Wolfburg attack on the front foot he didn't look entirely comfortable
5 Vidic: Hauled down the difficult Grafite when he was turned and it summed up his uneasiness
7 Evra: The Frenchman was in decent form yet again but even his excellent spring couldn't stop Dzeko goal
6 Valencia: Disappointing goal attempt again but one or two decent touches and crosses
7 Anderson: The Brazilian ended on equal terms in a tough midfield battle
6 Carrick: Missed a good chance but put it right with a classy winner
7 Giggs: Got a stroke of luck with his goal but another display full of impact

Foster: Failed to command in the air at critical moment in duel with Jones 5
O’Shea: Steady job and two decent deep crosses led to United goals 6
Vidic: After his Wolfsburg off colour display this was another untypical effort from the Serb 5
Evans: One of few who could be reasonably pleased with his effort 6
Evra: Not many have given him such a tough time as Malbranque. Never truly shackled him 5
Welbeck: Unfortunate he was given his chance on a day when Reds were so poor. One decent shot 5
Fletcher: United’s key man of the season but this was his poorest display to date. Never got hold off it 5
Scholes: Astonishing pass stats v Stoke but this was completely opposite and his usual customary booking 5
Nani: Tested the patience in the first half but at least tested Sunderland a bit in seond 5
Berbatov: Wonderful goal and some neat touches but nobody was alive to him 6

Van Der Sar : Steady Eddie gave Reds defence a solid base to recover their form 7
Neville: Crucially gave ball away with poor clearance for Bolton’s goal. Spoilt a decent effort 6
Ferdinand: Crisis over. Largely back to his trouble-free self. Stood firm when it got hairy late on 7
Evans: Handled the robust threat of Kevin Davies with great skill and dominant late on 7
Evra: No great problems until out-jumped by Taylor for goal 6
Valencia: His best game since arriving at United. Service was good and well taken goal 7
Carrick: No frills performance was enough to keep Reds ticking over in midfield 6
Anderson: Allowed Bolton through his patch to set up the Wanderers’ goal 6
Giggs: Another display of intelligence and clever play that gave Reds a spark 8
Owen: Nothing quite came off for him in the critical penalty box area 6
Berbatov: The Bulgarian produced some brilliant eye-catching moments of inspiration 8
Subs:
O’Shea (sub Evra 83) Height a help 5

Van der Sar: Champions League nights do not come much quieter than this and the Dutchamn will be glad he had gloves just to keep out the cold if not for using 6
Neville: Up against a potentially lively 18-year-old in Schennikov but the veteran stood up to the test and even managed to force the winger into defending of his own before the Russian was taken off 7
Ferdinand: Inching his way back to his best form ahead of the visit to Anfield on Sunday and the England defender was rarely in trouble but just under an hour was enough for him 6
Vidic: Didn’t enjoy the best of birthday’s in Moscow where he used to ply his trade for Spartak. Even being reunited with the one-time solid triumvirate didn’t bring out the very best in the Serb 5
Fabio: Champions League debut for the young Brazilian and he had a tough ask coming face-to-face with Serbian Krasic but he handled the situation impressively 7
Valencia: Had one thunderous effort that rattled the crossbar and scored to build impressively on his goalscoring game against Bolton last Saturday 7
Scholes: Broke up a number of CSKA potential attacks and fortunately he managed to do it legally into the bargain 6
O’Shea: Another role for the versatile Irishman as the midfield protector in front of the back four and he did it to reasonable effect 6
Anderson: Considering United had three men in the central midfield area you would have expected a bit more from the South American but didn’t produce enough 5
Nani: The surface seemed to bring out the best in the Portuguese winger and he produced a series of eye-catching tricks that tormented his full back though Berbatov looked decidedly unimpressed with his service 7
Berbatov: CSKA boss Juande Ramos had the Bulgarian at Tottenham and described him as unstoppable. Sadly he didn’t get enough of the ball to prove the Spaniard right 6
Subs:
Brown (sub Ferdinand 57) One rusty moment 5
Owen (sub Scholes 70) Missed a half chance 5
Carrick (sub Fabio 88)
Welbeck, J Evans, Macheda, Kuszczak not used

Van der Sar: Two excellent saves in the first half but maybe slightly disappointed he was beaten on near post for Torres goal 7
O’Shea: Was a solid performer and not much got past the Irishman 6
Ferdinand: Had been largely on top but was out-muscled and out-manoeuvred by Torres for breakthrough goal 6
Vidic: Had got his head and legs to virtually everything all game but when stretched he suffered 7
Evra: The Frenchman had his normal quality game but couldn’t provide attacking spark 7
Valencia: After his improved form against Bolton and CSKA he never seriously hurt Liverpool with his crosses 5
Scholes: Managed to find room in the frantic midfield battle but couldn’t inspire Reds 6
Carrick: Never really got a firm grip in the engine room but not overrun 5
Giggs: United’s vital spark this season had nothing to dig out for this one 5
Rooney: One decent header but didn’t have much else to get his teeth into 6
Berbatov: Couldn’t bring calm to a frenzied match and never suggested he could inspire 5

Van der Sar - Ferguson says there’s no one better – but the United manager himself could have kept goal against Blackburn, such was Rovers’ lack of threat. 7
Evra - Was allowed to get forward as often as he liked and how he punished Blackburn with one probing run after another. It was his cross-come-shot that set up Berbatov’s goal. 8
Brown - Lucky to get away with a miscue when under the challenge of Di Santo, but otherwise untroubled at the back. 7
Evans - Clattered when challenging Samba early on, but that was about as tough as it got for the Northern Ireland international, who will hope he now gets an extended run in the first team. 7
O’Shea - Brilliant tackle denied Diouf when through on goal early on, but much of his good work was done supporting Valencia in attack. 7
Nani - Endured some rough stuff from Rovers’ defenders, but kept getting up gamely. Still frustrates when in promising positions and should have done better with a first half header. 6
Carrick - Neat and tidy without every finding the defence-splitting passes he is capable of. Alongside Anderson, controlled the midfield. 7
Anderson - Harassed and harried in midfield to boss the centre of the park and it was his cross that led to Rooney’s goal. 7
Valencia - Increasingly looking at home in the red of United. Missed one good opportunity early on, but his inch perfect first half cross to Berbatov deserved a better finish from the Bulgarian. 7
Rooney - Responsible for the pass of the match when finding Valencia out wide with a perfectly-weighted volley, and a delightful finish killed off what little chance Blackburn had of mounting a comeback. 7
Berbatov - Superb touch and finish fired United ahead and helped erase thoughts of a first half in which he might have scored a hat-trick, if not for some wasteful finishing. 8
Substitutes
Obertan (for Nani, 63) - Making his home debut, could have made himself an instant hero when presented with a golden opportunity in the last 10 minutes, but shot wide from eight yards out. Still some good touches added up to a promising start. 6
Owen (for Berbatov 79) - Should have scored his second goal in a week but fired late chance wide. 6
Subs not used: Scholes, Fabio, Fletcher, Kuszczak, De Laet
Blackburn: Robinson, Samba, Givet, Nelson, Emerton, Dunn (McCarthy 83), Nzonzi, Andrews (Pedersen 57), Diouf, Di Santo (Kalinic 76), Chimbonda

Anderson: Powerful at times but even with his experience he was unable to take hold of midfield 6
Gibson: The Irishman has waited a while for this chance but it was a mixed effort from him 6
Park: Shook off the cobwebs but didn't really do much else 5
Welbeck: Might not enjoy his 19th birthday too much today as most of what he attempted fell short last night 5
Macheda: The Italian had one or two brief moments that caused problems 6

Kuszczak: The Pole built on his impressive form at Portsmouth with one particularly excellent save from Bentley 7
Neville: Whether it was in combat against Bentley or Lennon the skipper was the winner 7
Brown: The diminutive threat of Defoe and Keane didn't bother him and he handled Crouch with equal comfort 7
Vidic: Slack distribution early on but he grew in stature and was more like his old self as game wore on 8
De Laet: Like his opposite full back team-mate the Belgian was never exposed or in grave danger against experienced opponents 7
Obertan: The French winger was one of the brighter sparks against Besiktas but didn't get much change out of Bale 6
Anderson: Suggestions that the Brazilian has started to tread water were dispelled with a much better display 7
Gibson: Comfortable on the ball and his long range strikes were a lethal weapon 8
Park: Not much went down United's left flank so the Korean was a bit out of it 6
Welbeck: Looked better on the ball and put Tottenham on the back foot more than he did the Turks 6
Berbatov: The younger ones around him fed off his calm impact on the game 8
Subs:

Kuszczak: Safe hands throughout and a marvellous save from Diamanti free kick 7
Fletcher: Up against a young opponent and he never gave him a chance at right back 7
Neville: Not in much trouble until he pulled up with groin injury 5
Brown: Very little aerial danger from West Ham’s attack so it was a pretty comfortable afternoon 7
Evra: Didn’t have to be much more than solid to ensure the Hammers didn’t chisel an opening down his flank 7
Valencia: Fairly quiet because of lack of service until he had a burst of power to help put Reds on Easy Street 7
Gibson: Kept everything simple in midfield and struck another absolute beauty 7
Scholes: Cracking goal and ran the show for Reds in the engine room 8
Anderson: The Brazilian didn’t impose himself on midfield but did set up Valencia goal 6
Giggs: Ran the show in the first half and then took a back seat for a while before coming to fore again 8
Rooney: Not much to get his teeth into until a simple tap in presented itself 6

Wolfsburg 1 United 3: Player Ratings
-manchestereveningnews.co.uk-
KUSZCZAK: made two crucial saves to keep United on level terms and had no chance with Wolfsburg equaliser. 7
PARK: ran himself to a standstill up and down United's right flank as full back and midfield. 7
CARRICK: never considered himself a central defender but used brain rather than brawn to great effect. 7
FLETCHER: barely gave an inch to Brazilian Grafite who was eventually substituted such was the Scotsman's mastery over him. 8
EVRA: stand-in skipper adapted quickly to his role in a back three and produced succession of timely tackles. 8
NANI: continues to frustrate the life out of United fans and this display won't win over the doubters. 5
GIBSON: injuries have given the Irishman his chance but again didn't look out of place on elite stage. 7
SCHOLES: the midfield general displayed full repertoire of passing skills to show he still merits regular place. 8
WELBECK: willing foil for 'veteran' strike partner Owen. 7
ANDERSON: some misplaced passes marred what would have been a fine display by the Brazilian. 6
OWEN: are you watching Fabio? his sensational hat-trick gave the England boss more than a nudge for next year's World Cup. 9
SUBSTITUTES:
OBERTAN (for Welbeck 74): created two goals in his brief stay on the pitch. 7
VALENCIA (for Nani 74): didn't make the same impact as the Frenchman. 6

Kuszczak: Not that much to do but looked comfortable 6
Fletcher: Villa’s quality wingers were a much more severe test for him but largely handled it well 7
Brown: Not overly tested but was caught in no-mans land for Villa winner 6
Vidic: He wasn’t always the steely backbone United hoped he’d provide 6
Evra: Another lively display from the left back defensively and going forward 7
Valencia: Quiet by recent standards and limited danger to Villa 6
Carrick: Worked hard to find that killer pass but willing runners were limited 7
Anderson: After recent good form this was a disappointing effort. Failed to make any impact 5
Park: Never really looked on the case and failed to cause Villa any serious problems 5
Giggs: Was unable to tap into his great Upton Park form and rarely created any bother 5
Rooney: Not everything was polished but worked like a Trojan and liveliest United attacker 8

Premier League Player Ratings: Manchester United 3-0 Wolverhampton Wanderers
Easy win for United against Wolves' reserves
Dec 15, 2009 10:14:42 PM
MANCHESTER UNITED
Tomasz Kuszczak - 6 - Given the evening off by a shot-shy Wolverhampton team.
Ritchie De Laet - 6 - Bombed forward into space, but took too little care with his final delivery. Solid defensively.
Michael Carrick - 7 - Rarely tested in the alien environs of central defence as Wolves failed to threaten. Showed composure when dealing with Iwelumo.
Nemanja Vidic - 8 - Rose like a salmon to head home the all important second goal before half time. Stuck to the task of marking Maierhofer admirably. Made sure he was the first to every ball, then was given a rest, with Fletcher coming on.
Patrice Evra - 7 - Effervescent threat on the front foot and alive to cut out every loose ball.
Antonio Valencia - 7 - Stole the breath of the crowd with an emphatic finish to get on the score sheet.
Paul Scholes - 7 - Enjoyed a leisurely stroll around Old Trafford. Never put under pressure by the demure visitors who seemed enthralled by his effortless ability in possession.
Darron Gibson - 7 - Stuck to the task of providing the perspiration next to Scholes. Didn't waste the ball and looked to widen the pitch. Booked for crunching Castillo.
Gabriel Obertan - 6.5 - Linked well with Evra and was a willing runner. Almost notched his first United goal on the stroke of half-time when he angered Rooney by selfishly taking on a shot. Made way for Welbeck.
Dimitar Berbatov - 7 - Usual array of flicks and tricks was at its most delightful when setting up Valencia for the third goal.
Wayne Rooney - 7.5 - Penalty opener should have crowned a hat-trick after he spurned two sitters previously. Unsettled the second string Wolves defence with his raw pace and tenacity. Visibly disappointed to be taken off for Owen.
Substitutes
Michael Owen - n/a
Danny Welbeck - 6 - Almost celebrated his new contract with a goal when let in by some shaky Wolves defending. Showed some confident touches.
Darren Fletcher - 6 - Filled in at full-back to good effect.

Kuszczak: Made one early superb save but it only delayed the inevitable. No chance for goals 6
Fletcher: Gave it his all in the three man defence but his spark unfortunately missed in that role 6
Carrick: Exposed this time in his emergency role. Struggled at times when in direct combat with Zamora 5
De Laet: Three man defence made it tough for the Belgian as did coming up against Zamora 5
Evra: Disadvantaged when in advanced role and Duff made hay 5
Valencia: Rarely had the opportunity to get at Fulham and when he did he ran into trouble 5
Scholes: Not his day at all. Early booking for bad tackle and much of his passing was off 4
Gibson: Was largely anonymous in the midfield battle and off target with a couple of trademark blockbuster chances 4
Anderson: The Braziian never stamped any authority on the match and his distribution was woeful 4
Rooney: Couldn't fault his endeavour as usual but it was banging head against a brick wall time 6
Owen: The confidence banked from his Wolfsburg hat trick has clearly leaked away on the bench 4
Subs:
Berbatov (sub Gibson 57) No impact 4
Fabio (sub De Laet 57) Attacked well 5
Welbeck (sub Owen 72) Couldn't get into it

8 Kuszczak: If not for his outstanding reaction save to beat away Olofinjana's first-half volley, United would have been in trouble early on.
5 Rafael: The Brazilian's clumsy challenge handed Hull a second-half penalty and he was caught out of position to let Hunt in early on. But still looked thrilling going forward.
7 Brown: Looked fit and sharp alongside Vidic, producing one brilliantly-timed first-half tackle to deny Garcia.
7 Vidic: How happy Ferguson will have been to see the big Serbian back at the heart of defence. Looked a touch ring-rusty but the defence looked so much more solid with him in it.
6 Evra: At last he had some familiar faces around him after being United's only recognised fit defender in recent weeks. Solid as ever.
6 Valencia: Crossing wasn't at its best but still provided a willing outlet on the right until replaced by Park in the second half.
7 Carrick: Pinpoint pass set Rafael up with United's best chance of the match to that point but never really dominated proceedings in the centre of the park.
7 Fletcher: Industrious and full of energy - he added much-needed bite to midfield also helping out Brown and Vidic on occasion. Brilliant cross for Rooney's goal.
6 Giggs: The Welshman's passing wasn't up to its usual standard despite him getting himself into some useful positions.
9 Rooney: From hero to villain to hero again. A mixed bag for Rooney. His part in Hull's penalty was a moment of madness. But he always looked like being the man to provide the spark - and so it proved.
6 Berbatov: Largely ineffective, the Bulgarian rarely found a way through the Hull defence until a late goal was laid on a plate by Rooney.
SUBS
6 Park (for Valencia, 63) Worked hard and played a part in United's second goal.
5 Obertan (for Giggs, 78) Too late to make a real impact.

Kuszczak: Good job he had gloves to keep him warm because Wigan certainly didn’t 6
Rafael: Free to attack when he wanted to and the young Brazilian took full advantage 8
Vidic: Could have probably dealt with Wigan attack even when he had his calf problem 6
Brown: Solid when needed which wasn’t often and made one great break from defence 7
Evra: Nights like this are a stroll for a player of his quality 6
Valencia: Was involved in three build ups to United goals and finished sublimely himself 8
Carrick: Didn’t need to break sweat either in midfield or defence 7
Fletcher: Broke up any minor threat Wigan tried to pose in midfield 7

Kuszczak: Didn't have an awful lot to do but what he did was decent. Cut down goal as well as he could 6
Neville: It was a struggle for the veteran against the lively Johnson 5
Brown: Walked a tightrope at times with his tackling and made some mistakes but he was always involved 7
Evans: A steady comeback on a day when it wasn't easy to return from injury 6
Fabio: The Brazilian never had the chance to test Leeds at the back with his forward danger 5
Welbeck: Nothing went right for the young Mancunian and he was saved from his misery 5

Kuszczak: Three great saves from the Pole kept Birmingham out at critical times 8
Rafael: Steady job from the young Brazilian and chose sensible times to attack 6
Brown: Some difficult moments against the slippery Benitez and powerful Jerome 6
Evans: Ball bounced off him for Birmingham's goal but other than that was a commanding figure 7
Evra: A captain’s driving display from the full back 7
Valencia: Had the beating of Ridgewell on the right but didn’t make enough of it 6
Scholes: Stood out more than anyone in a packed midfield battle 7

Van der Sar: Handled cleanly and some brave keeping gave Reds a solid final line 7
Neville: Not himself and was clearly unwell but he soldiered on. Chris Eagles didn’t have much sympathy 5
Brown: Like his sidekick he suffered on occasions when Nugent and Thomson went at defence 5

Evra: His usual lively penetrative performance in attack and little change out of him in defence 7

Van der Sar: Handled well, punched decently and was alert but let down crucially at key moments 7
Rafael: Started OK but once Bellamy got up a head of steam it was always a struggle 5
Brown: In the air he wasn’t in any trouble but once on the ground he had his hands full 6
Evans: He was the one who largely had to deal with livewire Tevez and he was stretched to the limit 6
Evra: Snappy in the tackle and determined going forward, pity Bellamy didn’t play on right 8
Valencia: Constantly had Garrido in trouble and put in some dangerous service 7
Carrick: A calm head in the midfield maelstrom but didn’t make use of it 5
Fletcher: Drive and purpose kept United’s heads above water in engine room 7
Anderson: The Brazilian started powerfully but faded all too quickly 5
Giggs: Excelled in the Old Trafford derby but he was in and out of this one. Madfe made it count when he was in, though 6

Van der Sar: Never seriously tested by Hull’s attack and enjoyed an easy afternoon 6
Rafael: No hangover from his derby penalty incident. Solid effort from the Brazilian 6
Ferdinand: When you have been out for 17 matches this kind of game is very welcome 6
Evans: A few slapdash moments were unlike the Irishman but fortunately wasn’t punished 5
Evra: Had more to think about when Mendy came on but never seriously in danger 6
Nani: His most sustained display for a long long while and it deserved some reward 8
Fletcher: Without getting overturned this wasn’t one of his most dominant 6
Scholes: Here, there and everywhere in the first half but lost his way in second 7
Park: Miscued a great chance and didn’t really make up for it with general impact 5
Rooney: Once again where would the Reds be without him? 9
Owen: Frustratingly close at times to making Hull pay 6

Van der sar: Early second-half flying save from Richards gave Reds a critical platform 7
Rafael: Again he had an educating tussle with Bellamy and handled it well 6
Ferdinand: Tougher outing than Hull but though it was mixed he could be reasonably happy 7
Evans: A manful performance from the Irishman under intense pressure 8
Evra: Was stretched to the limit at times against Wright-Phillips but gave as good as he got 6
Nani: Prominent when Reds on top but needed a 90-minute effort like his Hull match 6
Fletcher: Covered acres of ground and never allowed City's midfield a moment's peace 8
Carrick: Quiet at times but then popped up with a vital goal and got Reds on top 6
Scholes: A typical Scholes night, a booking a variety of passing and a screaming goal 8
Giggs: Had a killer hand in two of United's goals and was a constant threat to the Blues again 7
Rooney: By his standards he was a touch quiet but that's when he is most dangerous 7

Van der Sar: Comfortable handling whenever the Dutchman was needed 7
Rafael: Not at his most confident early in first half when Clichy and Arshavin were going at him 6
Brown: Was given an uncomfortable time on the ground by Arshavin before Reds got on top 6
Evans: United’s best defender. The young Irishman was on top of everything 8
Evra: With French boss in attendance he look nervous early on but got his act together 6
Nani: Made the difference in the first half and United built throughout 8
Scholes: Lost one battle with Fabregas but largely the old head was on top 7
Fletcher: Many happy returns for the birthday boy to the Emirates 7
Carrick: When Arsenal opened up it gave him the opportunity to provide some exquisite passing 7

7 Van der Sar: Some early saves and sound handling gave Reds a comfortable platform for success

8 Evans: Another competent performance that the new England captain would have been impressed with
6 Evra: No trouble from Portsmouth down his flank and a nice easy afternoon
6 Valencia: Eased back into first team action and revved things up when needed
8 Fletcher: The relentless Scottish dynamo drove United’s machine with purpose
7 Carrick: Cool foil to Fletcher’s non-stop energy but was effective
7 Nani: Not quite as spectacular as of late but he had some eye-catching moments
7 Rooney: Took his time to get motoring and cause damage but opener was classic

Van der Sar: Unlucky that Ronaldinho's opener took a deflection. Otherwise, spectacular save from playmaker Pirlo crowned a solid enough showing 8
Rafael: Chosen ahead of more experienced Brown or Neville and he will have learnt so much from playing against such technically adept opponents 6
Ferdinand: The new England skipper's return had the shakiest of starts but quickly found his feet to marshal the often under-siege back four as the Reds carved out a remarkable win 7
Evans: Perfectly-timed tackle to end Pato's menacing run but then almost ruined it all with sloppy clearance that set up Huntelaar chance. Not his best first-half 6
Evra: Disappointing clearance from that third-minute Beckham free-kick. Like the rest of the Reds, dramatically improved after the break 6
Carrick: Guilty along with the rest of United midfield of not imposing himself. Will be disappointed with his showing as he attempts to take Capello's eye and his night was summed up by his bizarre red card. 6
Scholes: Total fluke for equaliser but he was in the right place for Fletcher's excellent cross. No wonder sub Neville couldn't stop laughing 7
Fletcher: May have escaped much of furious Fergie's half-time hairdryer treatment by setting up the equaliser 8
Park: Daft foul to give Beckham perfect place for trademark free-kick. Even his industry made little impact against opponents ridiculously dubbed Dad's Army in uneducated circles 7
Rooney: When he got the service showed not once but twice that he's in the form of his life 9
Nani: Surprisingly chosen ahead of Valencia and United were much better when the Ecuadorian was on 6

Valencia (Nani 64) - Immediately showed Nani what he should have been doing 8

Van der Sar: Some wasteful distribution but not a lot he could have done about the goals 6
G Neville: It was only late on that the threat of Donovan got to him 6
Brown: With Saha largely in Evans territory it left him picking up pieces at times 6
Evans: Saha gave him a torrid time. Struggled to handle his power 5
Evra: The usually sprightly left back looked decidedly heavy-legged and way off form 5
Valencia: Cross for Berbatov opener was the best of the Ecuadorian but marking for Everton second was worst 6
Fletcher: After his San Siro effort even his engine looked low on fuel and was never really in it 5
Carrick: Didn’t create anything for the Reds and unable to stop Everton 5
Park: The subdued Korean never gave Everton any seriously worrying moments 5
Berbatov: Superbly taken goal promised much from the Bulgarian but delicate touches came to nothing 6

Man of the match: Wayne Rooney. Who else? The England striker continued his stunning recent form with another brace.
Goal of the match: Michael Owen's third was arguably the pick of the bunch as the forward boosted his fading World Cup hopes with a clever finish after an astute pass from Paul Scholes.
Moment of the match: Rooney's opener broke West Ham's resistance at an important time and laid the platform for their success.
Talking points: Can Rooney lead United and England to glory this year? Will West Ham stay clear of relegation danger?

Foster: Shaky to start after his enforced long lay off but later showed his more accomplished side 6
Neville: Two games in four days but easy enough to get through against the Hammers 6
Brown: Handled the aerial threat of Cole competently 7
Vidic: Won his usual major quota of balls in the air and looked his old self again 7
Evra: Didn't have a lot to concern him defending and he limited his attacking 6
Valencia: He was all power and accuracy and Hammers just couldn't hold him when he got going 8
Scholes: A few stamps of his genius were enough to keep Reds ticking over 6
Gibson: Had a few decent typically ferocious efforts 6
Anderson: Had barely got his teeth into his reprieve before he was forced off injured 5
Berbatov: Excellent impact. His vision and touch were majestic 8

Kuszczak: Looks ever more comfortable between the sticks. Nothing he could do about Milner’s penalty, but rarely looked like being beaten after that 7
Rafael: Excellent until injury forced him off. Nullified the threat of Downing, while constantly looking to get forward himself 8
Vidic: Disastrous start. The Serbian was once again shown up for pace to bring down Agbonlahor for a penalty after Villa’s first attack 6
Evans: Looked the steadier of United’s centre backs and with each passing week looks increasingly like Vidic’s successor 7
Evra: Captain for the day, he was United’s main threat down the left on the overlap from Park. Rarely threatened by Young or Downing when Villa switched the wingers 7
Valencia: United didn’t make enough of him wide right, but he showed how dangerous he could be with his measured cross for Rooney’s winner 7
Carrick: Strolled around central midfield like he owned it. If he wasn’t breaking up Villa attacks, he was creating his own 8
Fletcher: The Scotland international was everywhere as United dominated central midfield. Compelling battle with Petrov 8
Park: Solid performance and did his part in quelling the threat of Young before being substituted late on 7
Berbatov: One of the Bulgarian’s best performances in a United shirt. Has been in encouraging form of late and was full of energy and enterprise – not least with his assist for Owen. Also played a part in Rooney’s winner 9
Owen: The finish for his goal was classic Owen. Unfortunately, so was the manner in which he pulled up with an injury just before half time 7
Substitutes
Rooney (for Owen, 42): United’s golden had looked quiet until his fifth headed goal in a row. Could have made it six with another bullet that hit the post and from then on it was the Rooney show. Outstanding again 8
Neville (for Rafael, 66): Villa put Young on him to try to test his aging legs, but it amounted to little 6
Gibson (for Park, 85): Too late to make an impact.
Referee Phil Dowd: Big mistake not sending off Vidic. 3/5

United: Evra, 41, Vidic, 68

MEN, Stuart Mathieson - March 08, 2010
Van der sar: No great challenge but produced some erratic distribution 6
Brown: Had had a comfortable half before being forced off at the interval 5
Ferdinand: Sound enough return for the captain only Doyle asked him a few questions 6
Vidic: Solid until he was taken on by Guedioura once and then looked clumsy 6
Evra: Had one penetrative run that almost got him a goal and was spot on defensively 6
Valencia: Considering the quality of opposition defence, thought he might have more joy 6
Scholes: Bang on the nose did him no harm and it was a quality finish 6
Gibson: Had a few long range chances that were off beam but not much else 5
Carrick: Kept it nice and simple because outlet for anything else wasn't on 6
Nani: After his suspension he was unable to revive his pre-ban form 5
Berbatov: Thankless lone front man task but did well under circumstances 7

Van der Sar: Dealt expertly with Pirlo's swerving shot on 20 minutes. Showed his awareness blocking yesterday's United hero Beckham's spectacular long-range effort 7
Neville: Surprise starter but played as if he's out to catch Capello's eye and win a place on the plane to South Africa. Brilliant cross to find Rooney for the opener. Red Nev was back to his best. 8
Ferdinand: Stroll in the park for the England skipper which is amazing when you consider the quality of the opposition strikers. Didn't clear properly as Milan battled to avoid total embarrassment – and Beckham connected to test Van der Sar. 7
Vidic: Fully committed as demonstrated with the clash of heads with Flamini. His partnership with Rio looked solid and it is such a pity, according to an increasing number of reports, he may well be off to sunnier climes in the summer. 7
Evra: With Milan playing so deep with infrequent attacks the world's most accomplished left back had a quiet game. Perhaps he was under orders not to get forward too much. Nothing much to do until Beckham entered the fray. 7
Fletcher: Acres of space in midfield which he patrolled with authority. Key tackle as Pirlo was about to pounce just before the interval and then went on within a minute to almost score United's second with a strike narrowly wide. Bossed the show and who better to seal a famous victory? 8
Scholes: Relished and took full advantage to finish the job he started with that fluke goal in the San Siro first leg. Neat triangles all night and didn't really need to get involved in any rough stuff which more often than not ends up in him being booked. Did see yellow however for kicking ball away. Set up Park with superbly weighted pass as the Reds dominated. 8
Park: Eager beaver who often gets the nod for the big games. His industry plays a key part in Fergie's master planning, particularly with the way he kept danger man Pirlo relatively quiet. This guy just never ever stops running which is so important to the team. Fully deserved to get on the scoresheet following an all-action show. 8
Valencia: Lots of room down the right to exploit…and he did early on. For once it was Nani who won the battle of the wingers. It was like United of a bygone age with two wide men for a full 90 minutes.Desperately tried to get among the scorers on a famous European night. 7
Nani: Ridiculous header trying to clear on the edge of the box set up Ronaldinho for early Milan chance. Tried to redeem himself a minute later with long range effort that forced Abbiati save. That early blunder was most certainly forgotten was the exquisite cross just after the break with the outside of his foot to set up the Rooney Monster's killer second goal. 7
Rooney: ITV commentator likened him to the King Denis Law for the excellent goal-scoring form he's in adding accurate heading to his repertoire. Maybe with 30 goals already this season he's going to take over that mantle. Not much sign of a knee injury with the leap for his first or the pace to get on the end of Nani's cross for the second. 9
Subs:
Berbatov (Rooney 66) game virtually over when he came on but still showed deft touchches. Unlucky not to get starting place as he's in a rich vein of form.
Rafael (Neville 66) Milan's threat had faded and what there was was thanks to Beckham on the other flank.
Gibson (Scholes 72) Two shots but no luck. Rare chance to test himself against big names who failed to live up to their reputations
Subs: Kuszczak Da Silva, Jonathan Evans, Obertan, Gibson, Diouf.
AC Milan: Abbiati, Abate(Beckahm 64), Bonera(for Seedorf 45), Thiago Silva, Jankulovski, Flamini, Pirlo, Ambrosini, Huntelaar, Borriello( Inzaghi 68), Ronaldinho. Subs: Dida, Gattuso, Zambrotta, Favalli.
Battle of the bosses: Fergie's determination to play the traditional attacking United way was rewarded when Rooney's opener left Leonardo's aristocrats needing three goals to keep their Euro dreams alive. Milan should have started with Beckham who would obviously have been out to impress back at Old Trafford.
Referee: Massimo Busacca (Switzerland) Didn't get anything wrong. Will be delighted his reputation has grown……8

Van der Sar: Don't think the Dutchman's gloves will need to go to the laundry 6

6 Van der Sar: Liverpool didn't pose him that many direct problems and didn't stand chance with goal
7 Neville: The veteran dipped into his memory bank to shut off his channel with assuredness
8 Ferdinand: Never a moment when he was in a major panic but maybe should have been aware of Torres for goal

8 Valencia: The Anfielders couldn't relax when the ball fell to his feet

7 Carrick: An oasis of calm in the midfield maelstrom
8 Park: The Korean was a constant worry to Liverpool and they couldn't halt his winner
6 Nani: Had one or two moments that caused Liverpool problems but generally a quiet afternoon

Van der Sar: Had to show smart reactions as Bayern’s dangerman and potential Reds summer target Ribery powered in a shot on 20 minutes. Got out of jail when Olic missed a sitter after a poor punched clearance. Was eventually beaten by Olic but it certainly wasn’t his fault. 8
Neville: The skipper had a busy night against French ace Ribery but relished the challenge in his no-nonsense style. Perfectly timed tackle on home hero Olic as Munich pressed. Silly handball easily spotted by the excellent ref seriously marred his performance. Livewire Ribery took the freekick which flicked off Rooney in the defensive wall to beat Van der Sar for the equaliser. 5
Ferdinand: Ferdinand’s reading of the game ensured he was rarely out of position against opponents lacking much of an X-factor. But he could have done more as Olic showed great energy to force the late winner. 6
Vidic: Looked solid after the rough and tumble at the Reebok. Blockbusting header from substitute Giggs’ corner left the German crossbar shaking. 7
Evra: Will be disappointed after allowing Olic to dart in from his flank to score the late goal. Not like the cultured defender show a dip, in form at such an important stage of the game. The boss was right to describe it as a terrible goal to give away. 5
Fletcher: Never ever accepts he’s beaten and almost has as much energy as Park. He’s now putting in shifts when it matters - reminiscent of the great Roy Keane and even Bryan Robson. It's a pity he’s Scottish because he’d put some backbone in Capello’s World Cup team. If everyone fought like him United would have escaped with a draw. 7
Carrick: Neat and tidy with a creative streak which makes him a perfect pairing for Fletcher. He wasn’t at his influential best and it was no surprise he was sacrificed as Fergie made a double substitution midway through the second half. 5
Scholes: Surprise pick to start ahead of in form Valencia as Fergie packed central midfield. Sir Alex said in his half-time team talk he didn’t want United to lose possession so often. That surely can’t have been directed at the Saddleworth superstar who didn’t misplace a pass and was able to push forward to support Rooney. 6
Nani: Hit the bar midway through the first half as he whipped in a cross and gained great confidence from setting up Rooney’s opener. He was able to exploit space created by Ribery’s efforts to get the Germans back in game. Wrist injury forced his withdrawal to allow Giggs into the fray. 6
Park: Had been growing in confidence at this key stage of the season. However the Korean didn’t impose himself against Munich in the way he has of late in a congested midfield and was substituted. 5
Rooney: Thank heavens the 11th hour rumours about him not starting were untrue! Could not have been a better start for United with perhaps the best striker in the world, who Munich stupidly said pre-match they didn’t fear, taking advantage of an embarrassing slip from the masked Demichelis to put United into a first minute lead. Blotted his copybook for the equaliser and was rightly booked. Nightmare wait for the nation now he’s injured his ankle. 7
Subs:
Berbatov (for Park 69) No chance of making an impact as the Germans were so much in control….5
Valencia (for Carrick 69) Must have been tough for Fergie not to start him but by the time he did get off the bench the game was going away from United….5
Giggs (for Nani 82) As one of only two survivors from the treble-clinching triumph in Barcelona against Munich, a fairytale was on as Giggs replaced Nani. Pity it turned into a nightmare.
United subs not used: Kuszczak, Rafael Da Silva, Jonathan Evans, Gibson.
Bayern: Butt, Lahm, Van Buyten, Demichelis, Badstuber, Altintop(for Klose 86), Van Bommel, Pranjic, Ribery, Muller (for Gomez 73), Olic. Subs: Rensing, Gorlitz, Contento, Alaba, Tymoschuk
BATTLE OF THE BOSSES: Fergie’s substitutions just didn’t work and it was a puzzle that Berbatov of all people was introduced. He’s not really one for when the going has got tough. Sir Alex had to do something but this time his tactics didn’t work. Last laugh then to Louis Van Gaal. Remember though 1-0 at Old Trafford in the return leg next week sends United through.
Referee: Frank De Bleeckere (Belgium): Excellent performance from the official who called everything right and significantly added to the spectacle by allowed the game to flow…..8

Van der Sar: Not overly tested but little chance with goals 6
Neville: Hit and miss with his deliveries and caught out down his flank a couple of times 5
Ferdinand: United’s best defender. He was on top of most things that came in his area 7
Vidic: Started a touch sloppily. He did improve vastly but Drogba lost him for goal, even if it was offside 6
Evra: At least he took the game to Chelsea on occasions and asked a few questions 6
Valencia: Limited supply from the Ecuadorian was disappointing considering his capabilities 5
Fletcher: Not the big game impact we normally get from the Scot. Chelsea’s engine room too dominant 5
Scholes: Wild tackle as normal and then on tenterhooks. Spread ball well but nothing came of it 5
Park: Needed a Liverpool type performance form the Korean and it happened too brielfy 5
Giggs: Brief second half spark but that apart the veteran was anonymous 5
Berbatov: Two decent headers but it was a toil for the Bulgarian 6
Subs:
Nani (sub Scholes 71) Livened it up 6
Macheda (sub Park 71) Poached a consolation 6
Gibson (sub Fletcher 86) Never in a shooting position 5

Van der sar: Virtual bystander for the first 40 minutes and was outstanding again when Bayern started to apply the pressure. But there was nothing he could do stop Robben's stunning and decisive strike late in the second half. 8
Rafael: Picked to cope with Ribery's pace, it was his foul on the Frenchman – his second bookable offence – that earned him a dismissal five minutes after the break. Before that he'd looked a significant attacking threat. 6
Ferdinand: Rarely troubled as United controlled early on, but at put through his paces as Bayern applied the pressure and could do little to keep them at bay. 8
Vidic: Went missing when Olic scored, but in general threw his body in the way of everything to help the cause. Like the rest of the United defence he began to look increasingly harrassed as the match progressed. 7
Evra: Handled Robben almost perfectly in the first half, but that wasn't the case in the second. The Dutchman orchestrated Bayern's fight back and scored a fantastic goal to seal it. 7
Gibson: Darron who? Bayern probably thought. And they will still be asking how the Irishman was able to let fire from the edge of the area after only three minutes to give United a blistering start. 7
Carrick: Seemed to be the scapegoat for the first leg defeat, but was part of a United midfield that totally dominated midfield in the first half. Should've done better to deny Olic his goal before the break and also lost possession in the build-up to Robben's strike. 6
Fletcher: Just like Carrick marshalled midfield in the first half to put United in control, but forced to play more of a defensive role as Bayern went in search of the winner after the break. 7
Valencia: Never more has he looked like Ronaldo's replacement. Gave Badstuber twisted blood with his constant runs down the right – setting up both of Nani's goals and tormenting Bayern's defence until Rafael's red card. 8
Nani: One of his finest days in a United shirt. Ronaldo would have been proud of his countryman's performance, scoring two and tearing holes in Bayern's defence. Less of a threat when forced to play as a lone front man in the second half. 9
Rooney: The stadium had their hearts in their mouths when he went over on his right ankle again. Didn't score, but his very presence lifted the entire United team and how they resonded. 7
SubstituteS:
O'Shea: (Roooney 55) Forced to defend as soon as he came on 6
Berbatov: (Carrick 80) Too late to mark
Giggs: (Gibson 80) Too late to mark
Not used: Kuszczak, Scholes, Evans, Macheda
Bayern Munich: Butt, Van Buyten, Demichelis, Lahm, Badstuber, Ribery, Van Bommel, Schweinsteiger, Robben (Altintopp 76), Olic (Pranjic 84), Muller (Gomez 45). Not used: Rensing, Klose, Contento, Tymoshchuk.
Battle of the bosses: Fergie definitely won the pre-match mind games, starting with Rooney, but the biggest risk came in naming Gibson in midfield who paid him back. Could do little after Rafael's sending-off though.
Referee: Nicola Rizzoli - Rafael sending-off seemed harsh 7.

Van der Sar - A virtual spectator. Barely had a save to make, but put the defence at ease, claiming everything in the air. 7
Neville - Recalled after missing Wednesday’s Champions League exit. Rarely troubled and always looking to create in attack. Set Berbatov up with one of United’s best chances. 7
Ferdinand - His broken finger was stomach turning, but he shrugged it off and put in an imperious display at the back. 7
Vidic - Dominant in the air and had to be given Rovers’ aerial threat. Commanding, but it wasn’t enough to inspire the players ahead of him. 7
O’Shea - Good to see the Irishman back, playing on the left of defence in place of Patrice Evra, looked as comfortable as ever. 7
Valencia - Had United’s two best chances in the first half and certainly should have done better when one on one with Robinson just before the break. 6
Scholes - Sprayed the ball around as he always does, but rarely found a way through Blackburn’s defence. 6
Giggs - Surprising choice in central midfield with Scholes, but stood up to the task well with some smart passes before replaced by Gibson. 6
Nani - Had one of those days. Numerous mis-placed crosses infuriated both Berbatov and Macheda. Too often shot when should have looked for the pass. 5
Berbatov - Cut a frustrated figure, bickering with team-mates over lack of service, for which he had a point. Great pass to set up Valencia in the first half. But missed a good chance late on. 7
Macheda - Deserved much better service. Nothing wrong with his runs or positioning, just didn’t get the service he required. 6
Substitutes
Gibson (for Giggs 57) - Brought more muscle to the midfield but little else. 6
Park (for Macheda 66) - Gave United some extra spark, but couldn't make any real impact. 6
Evra (for O’Shea 78) - That he was called for when United needed a goal shows how little firepower they have. 5
Not used: Evans, Fletcher, Obertan, Kuszczak
Blackburn: Robinson, Samba (Nelson 33), Givet, Emerton (Dunn 46), Grella, Perdersen, Nzonzi, Olsson (Diouff 70), Kalinic, Salgado, Jones

VAN DER SAR: Rarely had to extend himself but ninth minute stop from Tevez's free kick was crucial. Almost ruined it with poor flapped effort at late corner 7
NEVILLE: Worries that the veteran would be left gasping for air attempting to keep up with Bellamy never materialised. Played it with his head 7
EVANS: Drafted in for Ferdinand and generally the England captain couldn't have done a better job against Adebayor 7
VIDIC: Often without Ferdinand he doesn't look as solid but the Serb stood firm aerially and on floor 7
EVRA: The Frenchman was back to his better form and quelled the Johnson threat, then Wright-Phillips and still set up winner 8
VALENCIA: His one-to-one with Bridge never developed into anything major. Only had a couple of crosses that caused Blues problems 7
SCHOLES: Those who wondered why hed just got a new contract saw why in first half particularly. Not same impact on second until ghosted in for typical winner 7
FLETCHER: His studs didnt miss flattening a blade of the Eastlands grass as he fought to make it an equal engine room battle 7
GIBSON: Never really got the ball in his shooting range and that reduced his effectiveness and impact on the match greatly 6
GIGGS: Too many attempted little deft touches from the elder statesman failed to come off 6
ROONEY: The on-fire Rooney before his ankle lay off would have swallowed up his golden 41st minute chance. He never caused City any other moment of serious concern 6

Van der Sar: Could enjoy the sun because he barely had anything to do 6
Rafael: The double threat of Modric and Bale down his flank was quelled expertly 8
Vidic: Didn't allow any Spurs combo much of a sight of goal 7
Evans: Like his sidekick he dealt with any threat Spurs had 7
Evra: Throwing up on pitch but he ensured it was Spurs who felt sick in end with penalty 7
Valencia: Got the better of in-form Bale only a couple of times and nothing came of it 6
Fletcher: Tottenham's midfield aspirations were constantly broken up by the Scottish workhorse 8
Scholes: A quieter impact after his derby performance but it was solid enough 7
Nani: Saved his only dangerous moments until late but they were killer moments 7

O'SHEA: A touch rusty at times but was never seriously exposed 6

VIDIC: Never gave England World Cup hopeful Bent a sniff of a chance 7

NANI: Took his goal well but he could have caused Sunderland far more damage 6
FLETCHER: We didnt get the normal Fletcher imprint on the midfield proceedings 6
