Sepertinya Owen hampir dipastikan dilepas Sir Alex musim depan, hiks ...
Fergie will sacrifice Owen for Welbeck's return
May 22 2011 by Steve Bates, The People
MICHAEL OWEN could play his final game for Manchester United against Blackpool today – with Sir Alex Ferguson committed to Danny Welbeck next season.
The Old Trafford boss would have trouble finding a role for Owen next year, as he rewards striker Welbeck, 20, for an impressive loan spell at Sunderland, where he scored six league goals.
The Black Cats would like England Under-21 forward Welbeck to return – but Ferguson wants him in his squad and may sacrifice Owen, whose two-year contract has come to an end.
Ferguson also has the problem of what to do with Italian Federico Macheda, who went on loan to Sampdoria in January, but had difficulty making an impact.
Sampdoria have gone down to Serie B and Ferguson will speak with the striker, 19, after the Champions League final.

Owen Tak Pernah Bayangkan Juara Bersama United

Winning the title with United tops the lot - Owen
By David Anderson
http://i52.tinypic.com/2eztmx5.jpg
Michael Owen claims finally getting his hands on a Premier League winner's medal is the pinnacle of his glittering 14-year career.
Owen had done virtually everything else, from starring at World Cups to winning FA Cups and being voted European Footballer of the Year to lifting the UEFA Cup.
But the striker says he has fulfilled a lifetime's ambition by winning the title.
Ironically, Owen, 31, has pocketed a winner's medal after making just one start in his 11 league appearances.
He only managed two league goals, including United's fourth against Blackpool at Old Trafford on Sunday during their title party.
However he is still proud to be part of a title-winning side after missing out several times with Liverpool.
"As they say, if you can't beat them, join them," he joked in reference to his Anfield past. "I won a lot of trophies with Liverpool, but to win the Premier League is the pinnacle of anyone's career. I'm very proud.
"I've not played as much as I did last year, but we all have to play our part to win the league and it's been enjoyable, nonetheless. I'm really pleased and proud to have played with a great crop of lads and obviously the manager's second to none."
Owen rubbished talk that United's class of 2011 does not compare to their previous title-winning sides and he claims everyone in Fergie's huge squad has played their part.
Twenty-one players played the requisite 10 games to qualify for winner's medals and Owen says that shows the depth of United's squad.
"It's a great team, in my eyes," he said. "Throughout the year you'd look at the team and think 'he's essential' and then he'd dip out of form or somebody else would come back from injury or come into form. The amount of goals that have been spread around the team is fantastic.
"Everyone's played a part, even the lads who have only played a couple of games, the likes of Wes Brown and Gary Neville, for instance.
"They're all great members of the squad. We live with these guys day in and day out and they're even more important than people would think."
Having finally won the Premier League, Owen could complete the box set of winner's medals at Wembley on Saturday without playing.
Owen is expected to be on the bench for the Champions League Final in what is expected to be his last act as a United player before his contract expires next month.
The former Real Madrid star has still contributed to United's Euro campaign and revealed he has been playing as David Villa in training games.
"A lot of what we are doing in training is focused on stopping Barcelona," he said. "I was even playing as David Villa on the left wing in training trying to mimic how Barcelona play."

Owen eyes perfect final
26/05/2011 09:00, Report by Nick Coppack
http://www.manutd.com/~/media/5DA7427A0DCC4EE4B97B6547EEB0089E.ashx?h=179&la=ar-SA&w=480&rgn=0,193,537,392
Michael Owen admits it would be a dream to score on Saturday against Barcelona, in a game he describes as “the perfect final”.
The Reds striker, who netted United's last goal of the 2010/11 domestic campaign against Blackpool at Old Trafford, has never played in a Champions League final. He's not convinced he'll start this one, either, but insists he'll be ready should he be called upon from the bench.
“We have such a good squad here so we'll have to wait and see [if I feature]. But if I'm on the bench and I'm brought on then I'd love to score, obviously. But I've got to get on the bench first before I can even think about getting on the pitch.
“It doesn't frustrate me [starting so few games]. If I was at a smaller club then I'd never be involved in any big games. At least here at United I've got a chance of playing in them.”
Games don't come much bigger than United and Barcelona in a European Cup final.
“It's a cracking game,” Owen said. “If you look at European football then you'd say it's the ideal final. I think the purists and the neutrals would probably say Barcelona and United are the best two teams in Europe right now. It's the perfect final.”
The same was said of the 2009 showpiece in Rome, and that ended in tears for the Reds. On that occasion, Barcelona won 2-0, despite a bright start by Sir Alex Ferguson's men. Indeed, Cristiano Ronaldo and Ji-sung Park both had good chances in the opening 10 minutes to put the Reds ahead, before goals by Samuel Eto'o and Lionel Messi clinched the silverware.
Owen wasn't at Old Trafford then, although he has watched the tapes of that match in the build-up to this Saturday's fixture.
“We try not to speak about Rome too much, to be honest,” he said. “We don't want any negative thoughts going through our minds. We're just focusing on what we do best and how we can play against Barcelona.
“But what I will say is that if you look at the game in Rome, we were outstanding in the 15 minutes. If we'd scored a goal it would have been a different game.
“We have to make sure we score that goal this time.”

Michael Owen: Barcelona Terlalu Luar Biasa
Striker Manchester United Michael Owen mengakui kelas Barcelona.
Bukan tanpa alasan ia menyebut demikian.

Owen extends Old Trafford stay
Michael Owen's contract has been extended for a further year, in a deal that will see the forward complete a third season as a first-team player.
Sir Alex Ferguson said: "Michael has proved to be a top footballer. It’s unfortunate Michael didn’t get more opportunities but the form of Chicharito put everyone in the shade and his partnership with Rooney proved invaluable. I am delighted Michael is staying for a further year and we will look to give him more opportunities in the new season.”
Michael Owen said: “I’m delighted to have agreed a one-year extension to my contract. To play alongside so many great players, under an exceptional manager, and in front of so many incredibly passionate supporters, is a real inspiration. I can’t wait for next season to start."

Owen Setahun Lagi di United
Kris Fathoni W - detiksport
Manchester - Michael Owen sedang senang.

Gimme 5: Owen goals
Michael Owen's extended his United stay by another year. Here are five of his best goals for the Reds...
22 Aug 2009: Wigan 0-5 United
Owen’s first goal in a United shirt rewound the clock with the sort of cool, clipped finish that dominated his early years.
20 Sep 2009: United 4-3 City
He may never top this moment. An unerring finish, deep into injury time, to win a thrilling Manchester derby. Unforgettable.
8 Dec 2009: Wolfsburg 1-3 United
Michael sealed his hat-trick with a superb solo run against the then German champions.
10 Feb 2010: United 2-1 Aston Villa
Owen helped the Reds to Carling Cup silverware with this neat goal in the Wembley final before limping off with a hamstring injury.
22 May 2011: United 4-2 Blackpool
There’s only ever one winner – Michael Owen – when the striker goes one on one with the goalkeeper.

Sir Alex Ferguson banks on Michael Owen to pass on wealth of experience to Manchester United young guns
Eyebrows were raised at Manchester United’s decision to hand Michael Owen a new one-year contract earlier this week, but the former England forward can credit Sir Alex Ferguson’s admiration of AC Milan for his extended stay at Old Trafford.
http://i.telegraph.co.uk/multimedia/archive/01911/michael-owen_1911456c.jpg
Despite naming Owen in his Premier League starting XI just once last season, Ferguson believes that the 31 year-old’s experience at the highest level is an invaluable quality and one which overrides his limited involvement on the pitch.
With Edwin van der Sar and Paul Scholes this week following Gary Neville into retirement, Ferguson has lost a collective well of experience totalling 1,544 Manchester United appearances from his first-team squad.
Which is why Owen has been retained for a further year and a key factor in Ferguson’s attempts, ultimately futile, to delay Scholes’s retirement for 12 months.
The United manager’s philosophy is that knowledge and experience outweigh minutes on the pitch when determining the ongoing contribution of his senior professionals and it is one he has adopted as a result of his respect for the approach taken by Milan.
While many clubs dispense with players approaching their mid-30s in favour of youth and potential, Milan have consistently bucked the trend, with the likes of Paolo Maldini, Alessandro Costacurta, Cafu and Clarence Seedorf all performing central roles for the rossoneri during their domestic and European successes in recent years, despite being into their mid-30s and beyond.
Ferguson, who has also ensured that United follow Bayern Munich’s blueprint of appointing former players, such as academy director Brian McClair, first-team coach Mike Phelan and former reserve coach Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, to key internal positions, believes Milan have led the way in exploiting experience by relying on seasoned performers more readily than their rivals.
Ryan Giggs, at 37, continues to justify Ferguson’s faith, but while Owen is unlikely to disturb the Wayne Rooney-Javier Hernandez strike partnership next season, Ferguson believes that the mere presence of the one-time European Footballer of the Year alongside the likes of Hernandez, Danny Welbeck and Federico Macheda will prove as valuable as any goal he scores next year.

VIVAnews - Michael Owen baru saja menandatangani perpanjangan kontrak bersama Manchester United.

From NEIL CUSTIS in Seattle
MICHAEL OWEN wants to prove he is not finished yet as a top-class striker.
Owen, 31, has been handed a one-year contract extension at Manchester United despite starting just four games last season.
But he scored the first goal of United's pre-season tour of America in the 4-1 victory over New England Revolution.
And he is sure that, given the chance, he can play a big part in the club retaining the Premier League title next season.
Owen said: "I always have high hopes and go into the new season with optimism.
"The club took the option to extend my contract and that fills you with confidence because it makes you feel part of the team.
"You feel wanted by the manager and, when he told me towards the end of the season that he wanted me to stay, I was delighted.
"The manager obviously saw something that made him want to keep me and he says I will be involved a lot more this year, so I am hoping that's the case.
"I want to play a bit more and be successful - and it's important to me to do that.
"It's easy to be confident when you know you can do it and I've done it thousands of times before.
"Some people may have short memories but I haven't. I know what I'm capable of and everyone at the club does too.
"We have some top players, it isn't easy playing every week when you have so many top players. But I'm relaxed about it and confident of doing well."
Owen is entering his third season at United and the last campaign gave him the first title medal of his career.
Although he knows that one start, 10 substitute appearances and two goals hardly had a big impact on United's record 19th title as they surpassed his former club Liverpool.
He added: "When you have something you really want, you're delighted to achieve it - and I was delighted to win the title.
"But part of you wants another one and to play a bigger part next time."
Owen is a successful racehorse owner but denies that will ever take priority over football while he is fit enough to play.
He said: "That'll never be my career, it's just a big passion of mine that will always be there in the background.
"Football is my main passion and everyone knows that."
Owen said midway through last season that if United did not keep him on, he would probably retire rather than drop down the leagues.
He added: "Thank God I never had to think about that."

Morgan Kembali Serang Owen Lewat Twitter
http://assets.kompas.com/data/photo/2011/07/19/1738112p.jpg
"Lalu apa teorimu tentang golf?
Mendengar kabar tentang kekalahan Arsenal. Hari yang indah!"
"Semoga kau tersedak sosis bakarmu sendiri," balas Morgan.
Ia beralasan, "Madonna sangat membosankan."

Owen Antusias Sambut Musim Baru

Hmmm ...
Owen Tak Sabar Reuni Dengan Beckham

Owen Sudah Lupakan Timnas Inggris

Michael Owen insists Manchester United are not afraid of Barcelona
The striker has conceded the Spanish giants outplayed them in last season's Champions League final, but believes a change of tactics by the Red Devils could reverse their fortunes
Despite losing 3-1 to the Spanish giants in last seasons Champions League final, the 31-year-old feels that a change of tactics by Sir Alex Ferguson could see the Red Devils triumph.
"If we played Barcelona again in the final, then we'd have to do something differently because they obviously outplayed us on the night," Owen told Inside United.
"Then again, I don't think there's any shame in losing to a team like that.
“We're not ashamed of how we played at Wembley but, if we played them again, then I do think we'd have to look at adopting a slightly different approach.
"On that one night's evidence, you'd have to say that there was a gap between the two sides because they beat us quite convincingly.
“But that was a one-off game. We wouldn't be frightened of playing them again, that's for sure."
Despite struggling with injuries so far in the current campaign, Owen cannot wait to play in Europe’s elite football competition, with United beginning their campaign away to Benfica.
He added: "I can't wait. The beauty of playing for a club like Manchester United is that you have a good chance of winning every competition you take part in.
"You're expected to win as well, which is good pressure to have placed on you. This year will be no different.
"We have to forget what happened last year - and we would have done that even if we'd beaten Barcelona - and start again. We have some great memories from last year's competition, even though it ended disappointingly.
"Now we start again and the aim is to win the competition."

Michael Owen leaps to the defence of England's Rugby World Cup stars
Manchester United forward Michael Owen has defended England’s under fire rugby World Cup stars, after Mike Tindall and co. hit the headlines following a boozy night on the town in New Zealand.
Having been granted a night off following their unconvincing 13-9 group opener against Argentina - Tindall, Chris Ashton, Dylan Hartley and others were photographed being jovially rowdy in a Queenstown bar.
The reaction has been less than favourable, especially as the booze-fuelled antics come on the back of an underwhelming showing on the field, but veteran striker Owen has been quick to offer his backing to his fellow sportsmen.
‘Why the fuss? Have our rugby players done that much wrong? Hard enough to win a World Cup without people making something out of nothing,’ wrote Owen on his Twitter page.
The former Three Lions star knows all about the pressures and strain of top level sport, having represented England in five major tournaments throughout his career.
Owen is known to be vehemently against professional sportsmen being held to account for their indiscretions away from the field, and recently expressed his feelings in a conversation on Twitter.
When Daily Mirror journalist Oliver Holt posted his belief that the ‘footballers are role models and should conduct themselves as so’ argument was foolish, Owen put across a similar point.
‘I agree. Just because someone is good at kicking a ball around doesn't mean separate rules should be thrust upon them,’ wrote the former Liverpool poacher.
‘They should be aware of their responsibilities but parents should primarily be responsible for their kids behaviour.
‘My parents were and still are my role models. I had favourite footballers but my Dad was the person I wanted to be like.’

Owen: No regrets on United move
http://images.teamtalk.com/11/07/402x210/Michael-Owen-Manchester-United_2621852.jpg
Michael Owen admits he is under no illusions about the size of the task facing him in earning a regular first-team shirt at Manchester United.
Even when Sir Alex Ferguson offered Owen a new contract at the end of last season, he knew there would be no guarantees about playing.
As it has turned out, Owen is yet to play a single minute this season.
The statistic should change at Leeds on Tuesday evening but with the emergence of Danny Welbeck, the 31-year-old finds himself at number five on the United pecking order.
For someone who still stands at number four on the all-time England scorers chart and was rated as Europe's top striker in his pomp, it could be viewed as a disappointing end to his career.
But Owen is having none of it. Even if he didn't play another game for the Red Devils, he would have no regrets about the journey.
"I understand you cannot be given guarantees in football," he told the Manchester Evening News. "As last season drew to an end I was 50-50 about what the manager would say when he called me in.
"If it had gone the other way I wouldn't have been upset. I am proud to have been involved with such a great club. But secretly when he said he wanted me to stay my fist was clenched under the table.
"We are all men about it. If I didn't play at all during the season I would sit down with the manager and have another chat.
"But last summer he was keen to keep me and that was enough."
Owen admits it is a relatively new experience being so far down the pecking order, although he did have a problem during his short stint at Real Madrid when he found Ronaldo and Zinedine Zidane barring his way.
However, he is experienced enough to be prepared for whatever challenge faces him.
"I have been a striker for many years," he reflected.
"I have been the number one choice and had people chomping at my heels. Now it is roles reversed but I can think of a lot worse places to be.
"When I train it is with the best players. When I play it is in front of fantastic fans in a great stadium and the quality is high.
"Who knows what the future holds. I hope I can be involved but I am not stupid there are a lot of top players here and if my chances are limited I will still have a smile on my face and still feel part of a fantastic club."

Owen Tak Menyesal Perpanjang Kontrak di MU
http://klimg.com/bola.net/library/p/owen-1708afp.jpg
(tt/mxm)

Owen Senang Cetak Gol dan Bantu Pemain Muda United
http://klimg.com/bola.net/library/p/owen-2109ap.jpg
(sky/zul)

Owen Ingin Terus Tampil Untuk United
Bola.net - Michael Owen mengatakan jika ia ingin bermain sepanjang waktu setelah dua golnya membantu Manchester United mengalahkan Leeds 3-0 di babak ketiga Piala Liga.
(espn/row)

The anniversary Michael Owen would rather forget, and goals can't hide
As the occasional Manchester United striker, who got a double at Leeds in the Carling Cup, nears the unwanted landmark of a year without a league start, could this season be his last?
As anniversaries go, it is not one Michael Owen will wish to celebrate. Deep down, he may feel aggrieved, maybe a little embarrassed, though it is not always easy to tell. With Owen, if there are occasional moments of insecurity, he is as talented at hiding them as he was, in his pomp, at eluding centre-halves.
The date will be 2 October. Two weekends, in other words, until we reach a full year since Owen last started a league game in Manchester United's colours: a goalless draw at Sunderland he would probably rather forget. Owen made only one pass that day in the final third of the pitch, and it was a five-yard pass backwards. He did not have a single shot and was substituted at half-time.
What Owen demonstrated at Elland Road on Tuesday was a poke in the ribs to those who had been lulled into thinking of him in the past tense. His second goal in particular was a moment that invited memories of those glory times when we were all that bit more accustomed to that triumphant smile, the right arm aloft.
Except Owen talked afterwards of knowing it would not change anything. "You don't get many chances," he said. "When you do, you have to perform because it's going to be a couple of months before you see a pitch again."
It is a strange existence. Owen qualified for a Premier League winner's medal last season but it was a close-run thing. Ten of his 11 appearances were as a substitute and his one meaningful contribution was the equaliser in a 2-2 draw at Bolton Wanderers. In total, Owen has started 16 games since his free transfer from Newcastle United in July 2009. A further 33 appearances have come as a substitute and there have been 16 goals.
Ferguson talked of a player whose "goals-per-game ratio is fantastic" but continues to overlook him for the matches that really matter. Of Owen's 16 starts, only six have come in the league, at an average of one every four and a half months. Almost a third of his goals have been in the Carling Cup, against Scunthorpe United, Barnsley and, finally, a Leeds United team that did not seem to comprehend even the basics of what it meant to invite Manchester United into Elland Road.
Ferguson cited the presence of Wayne Rooney, Javier Hernández and Dimitar Berbatov but the cold, harsh reality for Owen is that he has also fallen behind Danny Welbeck and is, at best, fifth-choice striker now. At other times, Federico Macheda's presence has meant the man who collected the Ballon d'Or in 2001 having to watch matches in a suit. Owen did make it on to the bench for the Champions League final against Barcelona in May but was not used and his presence, ahead of Berbatov, became one of the great team-selection controversies of Ferguson's quarter of a century in charge.
On the face of it, there is nothing particularly unusual about seeing a once-feared striker who has reached the point when he will admit he is in decline. Football is littered with men who reach their 30s and can understand what the old baseball pitcher Vernon Gomez meant when he talked of "throwing the ball just as hard as I ever did – it's just not getting there as fast".
For Owen, once reliant on speed and having been afflicted by long-term injuries, it is probably only inevitable that, at 31, there was so much surprise when United offered him another contract at the end of last season. The curiosity of Owen's story, however, is that he would rather stay in the background at Old Trafford than play regularly at another club, and has been quite happy to advertise it, saying: "I prefer playing less often in a top team than every game in a poor team. I've been there and didn't enjoy it."
By that he means Newcastle's relegation and at least he is being honest, even if it does jar with those who believe a footballer should get his job satisfaction from being under the floodlights.
The Daily Post – admittedly a newspaper with Merseyside leanings – has described him as "a fare dodger riding on Manchester United's open-top bus parade". But the scepticism has also been evident in Manchester at times. Owen, once of Anfield, has a strange relationship with United's supporters. Among the messages sent to his Twitter account after the 3-0 defeat of Leeds, one read: "Good 1-0 win tonight. Your goals don't count."
Owen has had to grow wearily accustomed to the "bench-warmer" Twitter jibes, as anyone who has seen his tennis-like exchanges with Piers Morgan can testify. It does raise the question, though, of what happens after Manchester United and whether he has the appetite to start again if the club decide not to renew next summer.
This, quite conceivably, could be Owen's last season, given that he has said: "I won't drop down the leagues and whether I would even want to drop down to a poorer Premier League team … I don't know. Yes, I could score goals, but I would probably get less opportunities and less enjoyment. I'd rather play less and train with top players, rather than playing every minute of every game, getting three or four touches and not enjoying it."
He does, after all, have another sport to consider. Owen's stables now have more than 100 horses and offer a new life beyond football. This is where Owen gets most of his happiness these days, crying tears of elation and hoarse with emotion when Brown Panther won the King George V Stakes at Ascot in June. The celebrations were nothing like as raucous in a Carling Cup third-round tie. Owen, though, is entitled to think he has demonstrated his case for more minutes on the pitch.
Except we have been here before. Last season, in the same stage of the competition, he scored twice in a 5-2 victory at Scunthorpe. In the next game, at Bolton Wanderers, he was on the bench and scored three minutes after coming on. Then United played Valencia in the Champions League. Owen was not even in the squad

Ferguson tells Capello: Owen can still do a job for England

Sir Alex Ferguson insists Michael Owen can still do a job for England at the age of 31.
Owen, the fourth-highest England scorer of all-time, won the last of his 89 caps in 2008 but his Manchester United boss said: 'If you need a goal out of nothing, there is no one better in the game. He's got the gift, no doubt.'

Big interview
Michael Owen: 'It would be too much of a waste for me to retire early'
The striker has been criticised for coasting at Manchester United but remains as ambitious as ever

For such a private man Michael Owen has fought a lot of public battles recently, abandoning his natural reserve to confront widespread condescension. By fighting back, and arguing his case with words and goals, Owen has developed a new purpose, and placed a fresh shine on a career that he insists is no slow obituary.
"I was born to score goals, I feel. How I score them – how I get the ball into the back of the net – might have changed. The actual ability of what I was born to do will never leave me," he says. "I used to be able to create a lot for other people, move defences all over the park, make great diagonal runs into channels, turn and beat players. I can't do that as much as I used to be able to. But what I've done is refine my game to be more clever, get into different positions, be more instinctive around the box."
The less he plays for Manchester United, the more startling Owen's contributions when his name is called and he reminds us who he really is. Two goals – the second, a pearl – at Leeds on Tuesday night started the first of two debates about lost England stars. Twenty-four hours after he had scored for the 11th time in only 12 starts for United since October 2009, another Owen – Hargreaves – returned from the wilderness with a redemptive hit for Manchester City.
If both were fit, Hargreaves would be the more likely to catch Fabio Capello's eye because Owen has been exiled by the England manager. Stranded on 40 international goals and 89 caps, he says: "I was in every squad for over a decade and all of a sudden it stopped one day. I would never turn my back on it, but obviously there's a scar there that still hurts a bit. But I don't get upset now when I'm not in the squad, like I used to. If I got a call-up I'd be there within five minutes.
"Fabio Capello picked his first squad and I was on the bench. I thought: 'This might be a sign that he doesn't fancy me.' The next time I wasn't in the squad, and that's just been that. I think he came to watch me twice in a year when I was at Newcastle, both times at the Emirates. Arsenal were one of the best teams in the league. We got tonked, and whoever was the striker for Newcastle away at Arsenal wasn't going to get too many touches, so I did feel a bit sorry for myself at that point."
But Owen's immediate priority is to force his way into a Manchester United side overflowing with attacking talent. At Liverpool for a time he grappled with Robbie Fowler and Emile Heskey for a starting shirt and Real Madrid brought new struggles with Ronaldo and Raúl. Now he laughs at the sheer scale of competition at United, where Wayne Rooney, Javier Hernández, Dimitar Berbatov and increasingly Danny Welbeck block his path.
"In many ways that's what harms your chances of a place – the fact that we are so bloody good. The strikers are just fabulous. No matter where you look there are world-class players, and they're a good range of ages, virtually every type of striker. It's one position where we're particularly well off. Even at 31 I'm enjoying learning how different people play and how you can play along side them. That's the positive."
The negative, though, is frustration: battening down the desperate urge to play more regularly. After the Carling Cup tie at Leeds, Owen admits he left the pitch not expecting to start against Stoke on Saturday – in the event he played 80 minutes after Hernández was injured. Owen says: "You've got to enjoy the good days, haven't you? It's nice to remind people you're still on this planet and that you can do it still at this top level."
On Twitter and elsewhere he has quashed the most persistent of the allegations aimed in his direction. The main claim is that he joined United for money when he might by now have signed for a lower-ranked club where he would play every week. This brings out his best debating skills.
He starts out: "I joined Twitter and you read a lot of the comments. You're biting your lip and you want to reply but you know a headline will be made from it and you don't want to give people the satisfaction. It's obvious I've had a good career and earned money. The last thing I thought I'd be accused of by going to Manchester United was doing it for money.
"I could have gone to lots of other clubs and earned more. The attraction from Man Utd's end was that they could get a free transfer and use their name and their ability to win trophies and their kudos to attract players such as me. That's where they've got an advantage, where they wouldn't have to pay bigger wages.
"At other clubs a wealthy investor might have to pay twice as much as everyone else because if they don't they won't get the player. My situation is the opposite. I've been attracted to the club by the players, by the manager, the ability to win things. Money is not the motivation. I've had a great career. I've done really well. My management company [the Wasserman Media Group] concluded the deal with United in hours. That shows you. I wanted to play under the manager and in a fantastic team. I just can't believe how many people think otherwise."
Owen has started 16 times since his free transfer in July 2009 and appeared 33 more times as substitute, scoring on 16 occasions. Defying expectation, Sir Alex Ferguson renewed the striker's contract this year, citing his professionalism and influence on United's younger players. "I can't find him a regular place in the team at the moment but what I've always said about Michael Owen is that if you need a goal out of nothing there is no one better, and I think that is still the case," his manager said. "He's just got a gift for it. His attitude is excellent. He's a good professional and a good presence to have around the dressing room." Ferguson likes to be surrounded by allies and Owen has become an adopted Paul Scholes or Ryan Giggs though he resists this characterisation: "Naturally I'm quite laid-back, more shy than outgoing, so I wouldn't say I'm good at pressing myself on people and taking them to one side and telling them what to do.
"I'm probably like Scholesy and Giggs in many ways, so I'm always there if people have got anything to say or ask. We lost a lot of players of that ilk. We lost Edwin van der Sar and Gary Neville, Scholes. It's only really Giggsy, me and Rio [Ferdinand] from that generation. I think I'm the third oldest there, which is bloody frightening."
He peers down the age scale and sees Hernández, a player in his own image. "He's a great example to kids. If you just watch him, he works hard. Speaking perfect English helps. In terms of playing the game a lot of people compare our styles. I don't think he's like me when I was young, he's a better version of me now. We're both that type of predatory player but he's got legs that are 10 years younger so he can do it faster.
"Chicho does his fair share outside the box but he really comes alive inside it. Even though I scored a lot in there when I was younger, the one thing you associate me with is the goal against Argentina [in the 1998 World Cup]. I could get wide, I could run at people, I could beat players, cross the ball for others. The older I've got the more I've defined my style and played more as a penalty-box player. He's a sharper version of me now."
Change is a favourite theme in his autumn years and it's here that he is at his most insistent: "The way I look at myself, the biggest achievement in my eyes – forget winning trophies or scoring in World Cups – is that I'm still at a top club playing at a really high standard having been almost two different players.
"When you look around, Paul Scholes used to be a centre midfielder and score goals regularly, bombing in, late runs, headers, great finishing. Look at him in the last two years of his career. He was still one of the world's best, but doing a totally different job. When you lose half a yard of pace you have to refine your game."
At Elland Road, Ferguson admitted: "He's not getting the games he deserves and that's unfortunate," and there is no escaping the sheer strangeness of his predicament, which was the talk of the industry this week. He wrestles with it too: "At Liverpool for a while I was one of the first names on the team-sheet, and the same with England after France 98. There was a bit of a change in Madrid – though one of my pet hates is people asking why it didn't go well in Spain.
"People think I never started a game. As it happens I started about 20 games and came on in 18 and scored a lot of goals, had a great time out there. Then I came back to Newcastle as the star signing and was in the team every time again. At Man United it's just that there's a mass of world-class players."
Which was part of the attraction. "No disrespect to other teams but when you're training every single day with top, top players your level doesn't really come down," he says, explaining his ability to locate scoring form after long spells on the margins. "For all that people talk about injuries I've been pretty fit at United. I've had a problem at the end of the first season and couple of little ones in the second, but I haven't had problems that have kept me out for months and months. I'm normally always there and on my toes and training with the lads.
"You've got Rooney and Berbatov and Welbeck's fit now as well. I'm looking really at the next Carling Cup and Champions League games. So it's definitely a different mental state, but it doesn't change wanting to play all the time, having that hunger to play all the time. That will never change.
"The difficult bit is explaining to people who say: 'You're just happy to play out your career there,' – that I'm not. I want to play on, I don't want to drop down leagues but I want to play on for a few more years. It'd be too much of a waste for me to retire early. My absolute ideal is to play where I'm playing, because it doesn't get any better. But I'm not stupid, I know one of the best players in the world plays up front, with world-class players in behind. I've got great respect for the manager and I know he respects me as well. I'd love to stay at the club for a few years to come and play a big part."
With England and United, you might call him some days an exile on Main Street, but in word and deed he is still fighting his way back in.
Michael Owen is represented by the Wasserman Media Group.

Owen won't turn back on England
ESPNsoccernet - September 25, 2011
http://soccernet-assets.espn.go.com/design05/images/2011/0921/michaelowenmanchesterunited20110921_275x155.jpg
Michael Owen has admitted it is highly unlikely he will ever play for England again - but says he will never make himself unavailable for selection.
With 40 goals in 89 gaps, Owen was one of the deadliest strikers of his generation and is fourth on England's all-time scoring chart.
But Owen has never seriously featured in coach Fabio Capello's plans, only ever featuring as a sub once in an international friendly against France in March 2008.
Owen's decision to join Manchester United and become a bit-part player further hampered his chances of forcing his way into the international set-up.
Owen told the Observer: "I was in every squad for over a decade and all of a sudden it stopped one day.
"I would never turn my back on it, but obviously there's a scar there that still hurts a bit. But I don't get upset now when I'm not in the squad, like I used to. If I got a call-up I'd be there within five minutes.
"Fabio Capello picked his first squad and I was on the bench. I thought: 'This might be a sign that he doesn't fancy me.' The next time I wasn't in the squad, and that's just been that.''
Owen, 31, was also quick to defend his ability to perform at the highest level after a career blighted by injuries.
"I was born to score goals," he said. "How I score them - how I get the ball into the back of the net - might have changed. The actual ability of what I was born to do will never leave me.
"I used to be able to create a lot for other people, move defences all over the park, make great diagonal runs into channels, turn and beat players. I can't do that as much as I used to be able to. But what I've done is refine my game to be more clever, get into different positions, be more instinctive around the box."
Owen has previously explained that he chose to join Manchester United to be with the best and to win medals, insisting that he would not have been happy playing for a mid-table club after leaving Newcastle United.
"In many ways that's what harms your chances of a place - the fact that we are so bloody good," Owen said of the United squad. "The strikers are just fabulous. No matter where you look there are world-class players, and they're a good range of ages, virtually every type of striker.
"It's one position where we're particularly well off. Even at 31 I'm enjoying learning how different people play and how you can play along side them. That's the positive.

Owen: I'd jump at the chance to play for England again, if Capello will have me back
Manchester United striker Michael Owen has accepted he is not part of Fabio Capello's England plans but insists he will never turn his back on his country.
The former Liverpool forward quickly fell out of favour when Capello took over as national team boss in 2008, with injuries also undermining his chances of a recall.
But 31-year-old Owen - who has 89 caps and 40 goals - still shows his class when opportunities arise and scored in United's midweek Carling Cup win at Leeds.
And he admits he would seize his chance should Capello change his mind.
Owen told the Observer: 'I was in every squad for over a decade and all of a sudden it stopped one day.
'I would never turn my back on it, but obviously there's a scar there that still hurts a bit. But I don't get upset now when I'm not in the squad, like I used to.

http://klimg.com/bola.net/library/p/headline/0000055632.jpg
"Penyerang-penyerang kami sungguh luar biasa.
(espn/row)

Sejak aktif main Twitter, Owen memang sering membahas berbagai masalah ...
Michael Owen defends footballers over huge wages
Manchester United striker sticks up for his fellow professionals over their salaries via Twitter. Michael Owen has defended the amount of money that footballers earn, claiming that they are deserving of their “share” for the part they play in a lucrative industry.
The Manchester United striker was brought on to the subject during a question and answer session with his followers on Twitter and insisted he was simply sticking up for his fellow professionals as he feels they can be “easy targets”.
“Not denying footballers get paid a lot of money,” he wrote on Monday night. “They do however earn their employers huge amounts. If that’s the case then surely they deserve their share?
“Nobody seems to mention singers, actors, golfers, F1 drivers etc that earn far more than footballers yet we take all the abuse.
“Footballers are entertainers, they draw in huge crowds just like those mentioned. Very unfair to then compare our wages to nurses etc.
“Of course they are superstars and I think everyone agrees they should earn more but how can you blame footballers for that?
“Most players give generously to loads of different charities etc. There are plenty of decent people that play football. Far too easy to just generalise.
“I may be wrong but I do think footballers can be easy targets so just wanted to stick up for the majority of good guys that play the game. Over and out my friends!”

Wah sepertinya perseteruan via twitter nih ...
'Benchwarmer' Michael Owen in Twitter spat with Arsenal fan Morgan
Broadcaster Piers Morgan and Manchester United striker Michael Owen have both been criticised for indulging in a cringeworthy, tit-for-tat Twitter spat.
http://img.metro.co.uk/i/pix/2011/10/08/article-1318084891280-0E49F17400000578-867191_466x245.jpg
In a slanging match chastised by fellow members of the Twitterati as 'embarrassing', Morgan called Owen a 'benchwarmer' and the footballer responded with jibes about the Arsenal fan and CNN presenter's weight.
Bemoaning the lack of Premier League football this weekend owing to Friday night's Euro 2012 qualifiers, Owen posted on Twitter: 'No Prem football is the killer. Looks like Racing and Darts for me.'
Chat show host and Gooner Morgan quickly replied: 'Usual Saturday for you then. Benchwarmer.'
Owen, who has started just 16 games for United since his free transfer in July 2009, took the quip in good humour and questioned what form of exercise Morgan liked to partake in.
After berating Owen for his spelling and grammar, the TV presenter told him: 'I eat too much, drink too much...yet still get picked for my employer's first team every night, Benchwarmer. #CNN'
The Manchester United star hit back: 'Assuming that is the case, did you get your #moobs, 4 chins and belly from drinking too much, eating too much or both?'
'I go the gym 4 times a week, Benchwarmer,' replied Morgan, before adding one of the most ridiculous and hilarious statements that is ever likely to pass his lips: 'My pecs are bigger than your entire body.'
Michael Owen clearly didn't let the spat linger too long in his memory, later tweeting: 'My Mother in Law just offered to look after the kids for the afternoon so I'm off down the pub with the lads.'
However, Morgan wouldn't let the matter lie and posted a message suggesting a £1,000 bet - saying he'd last longer in his job than Owen would in his.
The England international is now reportedly considering retirement as a result. Or maybe not.

Owen: The art of finishing
http://www.manutd.com/~/media/1A64F31E91DD423D943F218832A7AD4A.ashx?h=179&la=ar-SA&w=240&rgn=11,0,594,434
A deadly presence in the area, Michael Owen tells Inside United what’s required to be a top-class striker and reveals how he sharpened his predatory talent.
"A lot of great strikers seem to have instincts built into their make-up. There’s definitely an intuitive element that goes with being a striker – or at least being a certain type of striker. I’d say that I was an instinctive striker, as is somebody like Chicharito. But I wouldn’t have said Wayne Rooney or Dimitar Berbatov are as reliant on instinct as we are. It comes down to making the right runs and being in the right position at the right time. You always have to be ready; you have to be on your toes anticipating where the ball will be. As I said, some people seem to have a knack for that sort of play from an early age and, of course, years of playing as a striker helps hone that as well.
"When I was young, I obviously had a lot of pace, but that wouldn’t have got me anywhere without my instinctiveness in front of goal. The combination of those two attributes helped me get into Liverpool’s first team, but then I had to learn about other parts of the game – dropping deeper, holding up the ball, bringing others into play... I never got taught that as a kid. There are a lot of things you can learn on the way, but if you’ve got one or two potent weapons at the*beginning it can give you a head start. From there, there’s a lot of hard work involved and you need to have the desire to improve.
"You can’t get anywhere with just one God-given talent. You can have one attribute that will give you an edge over others in a certain department – you might be very tall, very strong or very fast – but that’s not enough these days. You have to be able to transfer those natural talents into football situations. You have to work very hard.
"To be honest, I wouldn’t say I was a kid who used to analyse my own game and identify the areas I wasn’t so good at and then spend hours improving them by practising on my own. I just loved playing football and played as often as possible – I’d go to the park and shoot into the goals, but I wasn’t really making a conscious effort to improve any particular parts of my game which I felt needed work.
"I think the deeper understanding of the game came, in my case, just through experience. The ability to play different types of passes, to score different sorts of goals – it all came from testing stuff out on the pitch. I’d find myself one-on-one with the goalkeeper and try a certain type of finish. If it worked, I’d try it again the next time. If it didn’t, I’d try something else. So you teach yourself how to react to different situations, based on the situations you’ve been in previously. It’s a gradual process and you need a lot of luck too.
"Timing a run to get in behind a defender is all about trial and error. It’s a very difficult art to teach anybody. Coaches might tell you when to make your run and at what angle you should make it – diagonal runs are usually favoured because your momentum carries you towards the goal and you’re likely to stay onside a little longer – but every situation is different. You have to try things for yourself and work out what’s effective and what isn’t. The runs you make inside the penalty area – be they towards the near post or peeling off to the back post – are largely instinctive, although you can obviously learn from watching other players and watching the masters at work.
"You’ll see some strikers who linger behind a defender for nine-tenths of a second and then, just as the ball’s about to be crossed, they’ll make a quick movement and nip in front. I think it’s important to watch other strikers and combine that with your own experiments on the pitch. You can certainly develop that side of your game.
"It’s never been easy to make it as a professional footballer and it’s not getting any easier. These days football is very athletic as well as skilful – you need the right sort of body to cope with the rigours of the game. You also need to be quick, or you’ll be left behind. You need to be confident and calm on the ball, and have a good reading of the game. You need an awful lot to succeed. But don’t let that put you off!"

Owen Bicara Soal Insting & Kemiripan dengan Chicharito
Rossi Finza Noor - detiksport
"Ketika saya muda, saya jelas punya kecepatan.

OWEN: ALDERSHOT IS IMPORTANT GAME
http://images.sportinglife.com/11/09/330/Michael-Owen-Manchester-United-Carling-Cup_2655565.jpg
Michael Owen insists Manchester United will not be taking the clash against League Two Aldershot lightly as he sets his sights on another successful Carling Cup campaign with the Red Devils.
United go into the fourth round match at the EBB Stadium looking for an immediate response to Sunday's derby mauling at the hands of Manchester City, and Owen is expected to be one of the players Sir Alex Ferguson drafts into his starting line-up for the game.
Owen has enjoyed plenty of recent and past success in the competition, helping United win a third Carling Cup in five years in 2010 with the equalising goal in a 2-1 final victory over Aston Villa, while in the previous round this season he netted twice in a 3-0 win against Leeds.
The 31-year-old also won the League Cup twice with Liverpool - including scoring against United in the 2003 final - and he is now targeting more glory this season, telling MUTV: "It's a competition we want to do well in.
"We've done quite well in the Carling Cup over the years and we want to progress and win a trophy. That's the end game."
While United suffered a 6-1 humiliation at the hands of City at Old Trafford on Sunday, Aldershot go into tonight's match in buoyant mood following a 5-2 away, League Two win over Dagenham & Redbridge.
That result ended a five-match losing streak for Dean Holdsworth's men and was a timely boost ahead of the visit of Barclays Premier League champions United.
Owen knows Aldershot will be champing at the bit to claim a prized scalp tonight, but has warned their opponents that United will also be up for the game.
"It's obviously going to be a massive game for Aldershot with Manchester United coming into town," he said.
"I'm sure it'll be a full house and we're treating it as an important game as well."
Owen also expects United, whose defeat to City was their first loss since last season's Champions League final against Barcelona, to put out a strong team.
In the previous round against Leeds, Ferguson selected the likes of Owen, Dimitar Berbatov, Ryan Giggs, Michael Carrick, Antonio Valencia and Park Ji-sung.
Owen said: "There's players who weren't involved against City, me being one of them, and a lot of the lads need games so it'll be quite a strong Manchester United playing against them."

Owen: Reputasi United Tetap Terjaga
http://klimg.com/bola.net/library/p/headline/0000058078.jpg

Cedera (Lagi), Owen Absen Panjang
http://klimg.com/bola.net/library/p/headline/0000058841.jpg
(espn/row)

Owen has no retirement plans
Striker hopes to follow the example set by Giggs
Michael Owen insists he still has no plans to retire and he hopes to follow the example set by Manchester United team-mate Ryan Giggs.
Owen, who turns 32 in mid-December, is currently recovering from the thigh problem which forced him to limp off in just the 11th minute of the UEFA Champions League win over Otelul Galati at Old Trafford.
Another fitness problem in what has been an injury-plagued career has led some to suggest the end of the former Liverpool, Real Madrid and Newcastle striker's career may coincide with the conclusion of his current United contract at the end of this season.
But Owen has no plans to quit and would like to match 37-year-old Giggs in continuing his playing days for as long as possible.
"I'm 31, so I'd still like to think I've got a few years left in me when you look at players like Giggsy," Owen said in an interview broadcast on Sky Sports News.
"And while they are playing in their mid to late-Thirties, that is great for us all, really.
"But I'd like to think I've got a few years left in me and I still love the game. How can't you love it when you are playing for such a top club like Manchester United?"

Owen Belum Berniat Pensiun
"Aku 31 tahun, jadi aku masih berpikir aku masih punya beberapa tahun jika Anda melihat pemain seperti Giggs," ujar Owen pada Sky Sports News.

Empty statements hide Owen's lack of ambition
By Jason Dasey
Sentiment is often known to cloud good judgment. As England tune up for next year's European Championship with a couple of Wembley friendlies, Sir Alex Ferguson is amongst the respected voices calling for the unlikely return of Michael Owen to the national set-up.
It seems far-fetched to suggest that the soon to be 32-year-old striker will be welcomed back with open arms ahead of Euro 2012.
Owen hasn't represented his nation since 2008 and is a bit-part player at Manchester United where he is recovering from a thigh injury. Yet Ferguson believes that there is no-one better than the ex-Liverpool forward when it comes to producing a goal out of nothing by appearing in the box from nowhere.
If he's that good, why is he fifth choice at Old Trafford? If there's no one better, why has Owen made only one league start in the past two seasons?
With a shared passion for horseracing, Ferguson clearly enjoys having Owen around. But to suggest that he be capped by England again is ludicrous, even if Wayne Rooney will be missing for the start of the Euros.
The stats don't lie. Since joining Manchester United in 2009, Owen has scored five times in 31 league appearances with 17 goals in 52 in all competitions, inflated by seven in seven games in the Carling Cup against the likes of Aldershot Town and Leeds United.
This week, Owen spoke about his ambition of matching his teammate Ryan Giggs by playing into his late 30's. In recent weeks, he's hinted at harbouring hopes of adding to his 89 England caps.
Owen, of course, has the right to make any choice he wants about his own career. But it is sad for many of his fans and former teammates to see such an iconic player become a peripheral figure.
"It used to be that you'd go anywhere to play regular first-team football in the latter part of your career - for pride's sake, if nothing else," said a retired England international who crossed paths with Owen in the 1990s.
"But the way the game has gone with the amount of money coming in, more modern day players are happy to simply sit on the bench or in the stands and pick up a pay cheque."
Owen is on a reported STG50,000 (RM216,000) a week.
If only his friends and peers used this international break as a professional 'intervention' for Michael James Owen. Instead of listening to him paying lip service to wanting to pull on the England shirt again, why not simply have the courage to put his body on the line at a smaller club where he'll play every week?

Michael Owen is expected to be sidelined until at least Christmas with the thigh injury he sustained in United’s recent 2-0 home win against Otelul Galati.
The Reds no.7 lasted just 10 minutes against the Romanians after straining his left thigh in the build-up to United’s opening goal when Owen darted towards the near post and stretched for Phil Jones’ cross. While he failed to make contact with the ball, Owen’s movement dragged defenders out of position and, as Sir Alex Ferguson said afterwards, “made the goal” for Antonio Valencia, who arrived behind the striker to tap into the empty net.
The boss was initially hopeful Owen’s knock would not prove serious, but a club spokesman told ManUtd.com on Monday: “Michael has a thigh muscle injury and will be out for six weeks or so.”
That prognosis means the striker isn’t likely to feature for the Reds until Boxing Day at the earliest, when United welcome Wigan Athletic to Old Trafford. Sir Alex’s men are also scheduled to host Blackburn Rovers on New Year’s Eve, with United’s first game of 2012 due to take place at Newcastle on Wednesday 4 January.

cedera lagi cedera lagi..aduh!
United Kehilangan Owen Selama Enam Pekan

Meski cidera tapi Owen begitu bersemangat mendukung United :)
Owen Yakin City Bakal Tergelincir
"Mereka (City) masih memimpin klasemen, tampil hebat dan memainkan performa terbaik seperti beberapa tahun terakhir," papar Owen seperti dilansir Mirror Football.
(mir/zul)

Ayo Owen, tetap semangat !!!
Owen: I can still break England record
Manchester United striker Michael Owen has not given up hope of playing for his country again and insists it is still possible for him to break England's goalscoring record.
Owen, 32, has struggled for regular football at Old Trafford, featuring in only 79 minutes of Premier League action this term.
A combination of injuries and Sir Alex Ferguson favouring other forwards has seen Owen fall down the pecking order and reduced him to a bit-part role with the champions.
And yet, despite his lack of first-team opportunities, Owen still harbours dreams of pulling on an England shirt and firmly believes he can improve on his total of 40 goals, and even better Sir Bobby Charlton's haul of 49.
"I am proud of what I did for England and what I have done," he told the Daily Mirror. "Obviously Sir Bobby's records are in my sights. I am still here."
Having been a regular for England during his Liverpool and Real Madrid days, Owen - who has scored 40 times in 89 games for his country - soon found himself out of favour when Fabio Capello began his tenure in 2008.
"As soon as Fabio Capello took over, that was it," he said. "I was on the bench for his first game in charge after having been an automatic starter for 10 years, and then after that I wasn't in the squad. The manager is the only man who will know the answer why.
"You have to accept it. If you get upset and angry to start with, if you will keep getting wound up. You have to let it go and that's that. I don't know why, that's something you have to ask the current manager.
"Once you make a decision then maybe you've made the decision. That's it, and even if I kept scoring I don't know what would have happened."

Owen Masih Berhasrat Bela Timnas inggris
http://i911.photobucket.com/albums/ac311/megaloblast/MO7-1.jpg
Striker Manchester United, Michael Owen, merasa jika dirinya masih memiliki kesempatan untuk mematahkan rekor gol Bobby Charlton bersama Timnas Inggris yang mencapai 49 gol.
Owen memang menjadi pilihan utama manajer Inggris saat masih berseragam Liverpool dan Real Madrid. Namun sejak kepelatihan Capello nama Owen langsung tersingkirkan.
"Segera setelah Capello mengambil alih kepelatihan Timnas Inggris, maka terjadilah.

Fabio Capello memang aneh. Dulu waktu melatih Madrid, Beckham sering banget jadi cadangan.

Owen, Idola Masa Kecil Aguero
Mohammad Resha Pratama - detikSport
http://images.detik.com/content/2012/01/24/72/owen-i.jpg

Pemain Terbaik Liga Premier? Owen Pilih RVP
(sun/row)

Owen Kembali ke Anfield Musim Depan?
Wirawan Kusuma | Hery Prasetyo
Ia mencetak 118 gol dari 216 penampilannya bersama "The Kop".

Gangguan cedera paha memaksa Owen menepi selama hampir enam bulan.

Michael Owen: I've played for Liverpool, Real Madrid, Newcastle, Man United, got 90-odd caps for England, 40-odd goals, don't need to work again, got four great kids. I'm not that unlucky!
http://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2012/04/05/article-2125786-125E01D3000005DC-630_634x444.jpg
Michael Owen runs a finger along the back of his right leg where a hamstring used to be and retraces a career path that changed one fateful night in Leeds 13 years ago.
April 12, 1999. Owen’s star was in the ascendancy after that goal against Argentina in the 1998 World Cup and a successful second season for Liverpool when the 19-year-old fell to the turf at Elland Road.
‘You’ve got three hamstrings and one was just totally ruptured,’ he says, raising his leg off the sofa to demonstrate the point.
Rare breed: Michael Owen is two weeks away from full fitness - and that could strike fear into the hearts of Manchester City fans
‘It should be right the way down but one bit starts there, attaches there and the rest of it attaches there. I’ve got no hamstring in the middle. I’m basically running on two hamstrings on my right leg and three on the other.
‘That injury has probably changed my whole career. I’ve been compromised from the age of 19.
‘Every specialist says the same thing. It goes from one and then you compensate and it goes to the other one, and then to the groin, and then a double hernia and then on to this.’
Owen is referring to the thigh injury that has kept him out since early November. He has played only four games for Manchester United so far this season, but his three goals have kept up a very respectable strike rate of one in every three games (17 in 52 appearances, 34 of them off the bench) since Sir Alex Ferguson surprised many people by taking him to Old Trafford in 2009.
Owen arrived as a free agent that summer after circulating a brochure through his agents in an attempt to persuade clubs that he was not injury-prone.
Mersey master: Liverpool was the club where Michael Owen made his name
A torn hamstring in the 2010 Carling Cup final, similar to the one he suffered a decade earlier, and his current five-month lay-off might suggest otherwise.
LIVERPOOL
Games: 297 Goals: 158
Analysing Owen’s career has never been easy. Great? Without a doubt. He has played for some of the best clubs in the world, was voted European Footballer of the Year in 2001 and lies fourth in the list of England’s top goalscorers with 40, nine behind Sir Bobby Charlton.
But it could have been one of the greatest and Owen knows it.
‘If I’d still been in one piece from the World Cup and gone through my career, what type of player would I have been?’ he asks rhetorically. ‘No doubt about it, if I hadn’t had as many injuries I would have been the all-time leading scorer for England.
‘I look back on my career like everyone with, “What if this or what if that?”
‘There’s regret that maybe the medical care you’re getting now wasn’t available 14 years ago when I had my big injury. With United, I had it surgically repaired and it’s brand new. I wouldn’t even know I had an injury. Back then you just let it go.
ON INJURIES:
You've got three hamstrings and mine was totally ruptured...that changed my whole career
‘Some people will think I was blighted with injuries and that’s a matter for them. I think to myself that I was exceptional at a young age but I paid the penalty for that.
‘I was 15 and playing in the Under 18s for England, I was seven and in the Under 11s at county level, I was playing above myself all the time.
‘When me and Steven Gerrard were breaking through at Liverpool he was phenomenal at 14 but he just couldn’t stay fit. That was the biggest blessing in disguise for him. He couldn’t play so he grew into his frame and all of a sudden he plays a lot more than me in the latter part of his career.
‘I was just ready and as fast as anything, and as mentally strong as anyone out there. I was ready-made to do it when I was young but now I’ve had to pay the price.
‘Bloody hell, when Gerard Houllier said that I couldn’t play every game I remember saying I’ll rest when I’m 30. He was probably right, wasn’t he! Part of me thinks I’ve been the luckiest person in the world as well. I’ve played for Liverpool, Real Madrid, Newcastle, Man United, got 90-odd caps for England, 40-odd goals, don’t need to work again, got four great kids. I’m not that unlucky!
‘I got a hat-trick in the Champions League, scored against Aston Villa in the Carling Cup final, the winner versus Manchester City and the last goal of the season (against Blackpool) when we won the league. There have been great moments, but this season has been a bloody nightmare with the injury.’

Owen is sat in the upstairs entertainment area of the Manor House Stables he co-owns with his business partner Andrew ‘Bert’ Black in Malpas, a picturesque village on the Cheshire border with Wales. It’s an idyllic setting, half an hour from
Northop where he lives with wife Louise and their young family.
A series of turns through the country lanes takes you to a long driveway, past the mile-and-a-quarter gallop and down to the house where trainer Tom Dascombe lives on site. Three dogs, German short-haired pointers, laze in the afternoon sun.
Among the racehorses poking their heads out from two sets of stables either side of a pristine lawn are Owen’s Ascot winner Brown Panther and Wayne Rooney’s horse Switcharooney.
Cuban Tash is owned by a syndicate of eight United players past and present, with Paul Scholes, Michael Carrick, John O’Shea and Tom Cleverley among the teammates who have bought a stake in some of the 90 horses resident there.
Ferguson too is a keen follower of the sport.
ON ENGLAND:
No doubt about it, I would have been the all-time leading England scorer
On one side a hostel has been built to accommodate 10 stable lads among a staff of 40, next to a veterinary area complete with hydro pool.
‘There wouldn’t be too many yards in Europe or the world with their own facilities on site like that,’ says Dascombe. If only this kind of medical care had been available to Owen when he needed it most.
The 32-year-old United star and Black have invested millions, but Owen isn’t in it for the money.
He loves the sport; loves horses and the personal involvement. It’s why a striker renowned for his clinical, cold-blooded approach to scoring goals wept when Brown Panther won the King George V Stakes at Ascot in June.
‘This was like my son or a family member doing something pretty special,’ says Owen. ‘It almost gets you inside as opposed to a scream of joy or excitement, like winning something or scoring a goal.
‘I think people were surprised because they didn’t realise what goes into it.
‘Nobody knows what it takes to get that horse there. I own the mother and we’ve got all the brothers at home. From a few hours old we’ve seen him being brought into this world. The ups and downs.
Breaking it in, putting the saddle on its back, chucking its jockey off, all the things you need to learn. And then to see it win on the grandest stage of all when I’ve had it as a pet.
NEWCASTLE UNITED
Games: 79 Goals: 30
‘People are spending millions and millions to get a Royal Ascot winner. But to breed one? What I did there was a million to one. It’s impossible to do. I’m obviously just very lucky.’
Horseracing has helped bring out the other side in Owen. He can express himself more easily these days than the intense young man who used to distrust the world and snap at his family. He regularly airs his opinions on Twitter.
‘I’ve formed more friends out of this place than I ever have in my football career because you’re in a tight bubble,’ says Owen, speaking to mark the launch of Manor House’s three-year partnership with Trinity Elite, a tax, accounting and wealth management specialist.
‘You’re scared what you say because different things get out, but here you can relax and meet like-minded people.
‘If you look at anyone at the top of their profession, there has to be something a little bit different. Some of the top musicians are quirky aren’t they, to say the least. You have to be driven, cold, hard and mentally tough as iron.
‘My missus thinks I’m a bit weird. I’m cold and don’t have many emotions really. When Brown Panther won I had a tear in my eye but I don’t think I’ve cried in about 20 years.
‘When I was at the top, I had more quirks than now. My wife thinks I’ve mellowed. I was tough to live with a few years ago, she tells me.
‘On match days I was very on edge if there was anything said to me. She would go into a different room because I would spin things. I was so fired up and ready. I was a lot more volatile. Not physically, just in terms of what I said.
‘I thought I was reasonable but I’d take it out on the ones I love most. My mum used to get it in the neck as well. I never did that with my dad, maybe because I was trying to impress him most with my performances.
‘I was a bit sheltered in my early life because it’s very uncommon for someone so young to be in the spotlight. If you’re a goalscorer you have to have a certain attitude because not everyone can do it.
‘But there was no game face. That was me. I’m very serious. I’m a lot of things that people wouldn’t be able to understand.
‘You’re obviously conscious of being brash or big-headed but I always knew I was going to be a footballer when I was seven or eight. I didn’t just think I wanted to be one, I knew I was going to be one. Nothing ever surprised me really.
‘A bit like when I scored the goal against Argentina. I came back and it’s like, “What did you expect me to do?” I expected to do that. If you don’t think you’re going to do something, then you’ll never do it.’
MANCHESTER UNITED

Owen is as sensitive about his horseracing commitments as he used to be about his injury record. The last thing he wants is to be seen as an old pro serving out his career and picking up a salary while pursuing an expensive interest outside the game.
‘When I retire from football, I won’t do any more or less than I do now,’ says Owen, who has already started his coaching badges. ‘If it (his business) washes its hands and we have a nice profit out of it, that’s fine, but football is where I want to stay for the rest of my career.
‘I never intended it to be this grand. Once my partner bought in, we’ve taken it to the next level and now it’s something pretty damn special, but it still hasn’t changed my life in many ways.
‘Footballers are criticised for not planning for the future and getting depressed because they’ve nothing to get up in the morning for.
‘Then if you do this, the first question is, “Doesn’t this take your mind off football?” so you can’t win whatever you do. Either you’re a dumb footballer not thinking ahead or you’re not concentrating on football enough. I still probably spend five per cent of my time here, 20 per cent with my family and 60 per cent training.’
ON RELATIONSHIPS:
My missus thinks I’m a bit weird. I’m cold and don’t have many emotions really
Dascombe sees a different side to Owen. They talk every day and meet at the stables every couple of weeks.
‘He always gets very excited,’ says the trainer. ‘Embarrassingly excited, even if we have any little winner, whether he owns it or not.
‘We had a launch day here two years ago in March and our first run from here won a big race down at Lingfield. He was stood here watching it on Sky and he was dancing around, hugging me. He loves his horseracing. He is absolutely so passionate about it. He feels that they’re all his.’
The United striker is two weeks away from full fitness. It means he could feasibly play in the Manchester derby on April 30, which should strike fear into the hearts of the City fans still haunted by his injury-time winner in the 4-3 classic at Old Trafford in September 2009.
Ferguson gave Owen a new one-year contract last summer. There is no guarantee of another.
ENGLAND
Games: 89 Goals: 40
‘I don’t think I’ll play until my late 30s like Giggsy,’ he says. ‘But I’d like to play more, probably for two or three years after this season.
‘I don’t wake up in the morning with sore knees or an achilles. It doesn’t take me half an hour to get out of bed as I hear from some older players. None of that resonates with me. When I get injured it’s sudden and a disaster for three or four months, never just a week.
‘As long as I’m wanted at a good level I will play on, but part of that is in my hands and part isn’t. I’ll wait to see what the manager says on that.
ON THE FUTURE:
I want three more years as a player and then spend the rest of my career in football
‘If it happens, great, we’ll talk about it. If not, I’ll try to stay at a high level. I wouldn’t drop out of the Premier League. I want to stay at the top level or look at other markets, but I have four children and they’re settled in school and that’s something to weigh up.
‘There are a couple of possibilities when I’ve finished and media might interest me. Gary Neville is a breath of fresh air and has almost encouraged me to do it. I get excited when it’s half-time now because he’s so intelligent and brings something new to it.’
The options are there but it is clear Owen is not ready to be put out to grass.
