Michael James Owen (lahir di Chester, Chesire, Inggris, 14 Desember 1979; umur 29 tahun) adalah seorang pemain sepak bola Inggris. Sempat dijuluki The Phenomenon. Tubuhnya mungil, geraknya cepat dan tajam. Bermain untuk klub Liverpool, Inggris, sebelum akhirnya hijrah ke klub raksasa Spanyol, yaitu Real Madrid pada tahun 2004. Tidak betah di Real Madrid, karena seringnya Owen dibangkucadangkan, maka pada tahun 2005 ia pindah ke Newcastle United, klub Inggris Raya yang tidak sebesar Real Madrid, namun dapat menjamin Owen bakal mendapat tempat di tim utama. Golnya ke gawang tim nasional Argentina pada saat tim nasional Inggris melawan Argentina pada Piala Dunia 1998 adalah sebuah gol yang tidak akan dilupakan para pecinta sepak bola.

Personal life
Owen met English-born Louise Bonsall at primary school in 1984. The couple bought Lower Soughton Manor in Flintshire, North Wales where Owen keeps his cars and Louise keeps her horses. They got engaged on 14 February 2004, and married on 24 June 2005, at the Carden Park Hotel in Chester, Cheshire. The couple had initially planned to get married at their home, but changed plans when they were informed that if a licence was granted for a marriage ceremony the venue must be made available for other weddings for three years, so opted to marry in a registry office in informal clothing and have a lavish reception the next day in the grounds of their home.
On 1 May 2003 their daughter, Gemma Rose, was born. On 6 February 2006, they welcomed a son named James Michael. Their third child, a daughter, Emily May, was born 29 October 2007.

MANCHESTER - Bomber anyar Manchester United Michael Owen menyimpan ambisi besar ditengah keraguan publik akan kualitasnya. Owen mengaku akan berusaha mencetak banyak gol buat United dan kembali menjelma sebagai bomber tajam.

Kehadiran bomber yang rentan cedera itu di Old Trafford memang tak lepas dari keputusan sang arsitek Sir Alex Ferguson yang percaya bahwa Owen masih bisa menampilkan form terbaiknya. Arsitek kawakan asal Skotlandia itu bahkan rela memberikan kostum keramat bernomor punggung tujuh kepada mantan striker Newcastle United yang terdegradasi ke divisi championship.

Tampilnya bomber 29 tahun itu di lini depan United juga diharapkan dapat mengisi ruang kosong yang ditinggalkan dua pilar penting The Red Devils Cristiano Ronaldo (Real Madrid) dan Carlos Tevez yang membelot ke Manchester City. Namun, Owen tak berani sesumbar mengenai hal ini dan hanya berjanji akan berusaha semaksimal mungkin memberikan kontribusinya di Theatre of Dreams.

"Tim ini telah kehilangan dua pemain penting. Tevez beberapakali menjadi penyelamat tim dengan gol-gol pentingnya, dan Ronaldo yang banyak memberikan sukses dalam dua tahun terakhir ini. Jadi, ada lubang di tim yang harus segera ditutupi, dan saya harap saya bisa menutupi lubang tersebut dengan banyak gol," ungkap Owen.

"Saya memang tak bisa melakukan hal itu sendiri, namun saya akan berusaha semampu saya untuk membantu rekan setim," tambah mantan bintang Liverpool dan Real Madrid itu sebagaimana dilansir Four Four Two, Minggu (2/8/2009).

"Saat Anda bergabung dengan United, maka Anda akan mendapat tantangan tentang banyak hal. Saya harap, saya bisa mencetak banyak gol, karena saya akan mendapat kesempatan tampil lebih banyak dibanding saat bermain di klub lain," tutup mantan bintang Timnas Inggris itu.

Madrid - Penampilan gemilang Michael Owen di ujicoba pra musim membuat, Jamie Carragher ketar-ketir. Bek tengah Liverpool itu berharap Owen akan kehilangan ketajamannya saat kompetisi dimulai.

Michael Owen yang disebut-sebut telah melewati massa keemasannya, digaet Manchester United beberapa pekan lalu. Mantan bintang Liverpool dan Real Madrid itu ternyata mampu mencuri perhatian setelah mencetak empat gol saat "Setan Merah" menggelar Tur Asia 2009. Dengan jumlah tersebut, Owen malah jadi topskorer.

Penampilan striker 29 tahun itu itu pun mengundang kekhawatiran Carragher. Menurut sang defender, Owen dapat menjadi hambatan buat The Reds yang akan bersaing ketat dengan MU untuk meraih titel Liga Primer.

"Bagi saya Michael Owen masih merupakan pemain yang hebat dan seorang panutan, menurut saya dia akan cukup berguna untuk United. Namun ia bermain untuk rival terbesar kami sekarang, jadi dia tahu bahwa saya tidak ingin ia mencetak gol ketika musim dimulai," tuturnya di Sunday Mirror.

Beberapa waktu lalu Sir Alex Ferguson bahkan berani memasang target tinggi buat Owen. Striker internasional Inggris itu diyakini akan bisa mencapai dua digit gol yakni berjumlah 15.

Owen nets new Ferrari for £170,000

Striker Michael Owen has celebrated his move to Manchester United by splashing out £170,000 on the latest Ferrari supercar.

Owen, 29, will pick up the 193mph California model later this month. And he is selling his old Ferrari with only 9,900 miles on the clock.

The star's £222,000 599 GTB Fiorano F1 - up for grabs for £149,950 - is the same model Cristiano Ronaldo wrote off earlier this year in a tunnel near Manchester airport.

A United insider said: "Michael ordered the new California, which is being fitted to his specification.

"It is a different shape to his old Ferrari and although it is not as expensive it is equally impressive.

"He wanted a car to celebrate his move. I think he wanted to treat himself."

The California, which has Ferrari's first retractable hard-top roof, was launched at last year's Paris Motor Show and is sold out till 2012.

Manchester - Penampilan apik yang diperlihatkan Michael Owen di pra-musim mengundang perhatian Fabio Capello. Penyerang Manchester United itu tengah dipertimbangkan Don Fabio untuk kembali masuk skuad timnas Inggris.

Dari enam laga pra-musim yang telah dilakoni MU, Owen telah menyumbangkan empat buah gol. Meski masih terhitung laga ujicoba, tetapi ini bisa menjadi tanda bahwa Owen belum kehilangan sentuhannya di depan gawang.

Namun demikian, Capello tak begitu saja langsung memutuskan Owen sudah pasti akan kembali ke skuad The Three Lions. Don Fabio masih ingin terus melihat perkembangan pemain berusia 29 tahun itu.

Seperti dikabarkan Times Online, Capello akan memantau pertandingan antara MU vs Valencia pada tengah pekan ini. Harapannya manajer asal Italia itu tentu saja Owen dimainkan.

Inggris rencananya akan memainkan laga persahabatan dengan Belanda pada tanggal 12 Agustus mendatang. Masih ada waktu beberapa hari sebelum Capello memutuskan akan memanggil Owen atau tidak.

Sejauh ini Owen telah tampil sebanyak 89 kali untuk Inggris dan mencetak 40 gol. Terakhir kali ia menyumbang gol adalah pada laga kualifikasi Piala Eropa 2008 melawan Rusia, 12 September 2007.

Owen: MU Dulu, Timnas Soal Nanti

LONDON, KOMPAS.com — Striker Manchester United, Michael Owen, belum mau memikirkan kesempatannya bergabung dengan tim nasional Inggris. Baginya, prioritasnya saat ini adalah bermain baik untuk klub.

Sejak pelatih Fabio Capello menangani "The Three Lions", Owen tidak pernah mendapat kesempatan bermain untuk negaranya. Selain karena prestasinya waktu itu sedang redup bersama Newcastle United, Owen juga didera cedera yang tak kunjung pulih.

Kini, dengan bergabung bersama MU, kesempatan untuk bermain di timnas kembali terbuka. Owen yang sudah mencetak empat gol selama laga pramusim bersama "Setan Merah" tampil apik saat timnya menggulung Valencia, Rabu (6/8). Meski tak mencetak gol dalam duel tersebut, Owen bermain caem dengan pasangannya, Wayne Rooney, yang selama ini dipercaya sebagai striker Inggris. Inilah yang membuat Ferguson yakin bahwa Owen akan mendapat tempat dalam skuad bentukan Capello.

"Inggris tidak dianugerahi banyak striker. Satu-satunya pemain yang konsisten adalah Rooney," komentar Ferguson soal pemain-pemain "St George Cross". "Mereka sudah menjajal (Emile) Heskey dan (Peter) Crouch dan bahkan termasuk (Theo) Walcott di Piala Dunia pada usia 17 tahun, yang saya masih belum bisa paham. Negara ini langka striker top."

"Itu memberi Michael Owen sebuah kesempatan. Dia bermain sangat baik bagi kami sampai saat ini. Dia telah menunjukkan kecerdikannya dan saya sangat senang kepadanya," tambah Ferguson.

Meski mendapat dukungan dari pelatihnya, Owen sendiri merasa bahwa kesempatannya kembali ke timnas adalah nomor dua dalam kariernya saat ini. Ia merasa masih perlu mengembalikan penampilannya, seperti ketika ia menjadi pemain termuda dalam skuad Inggris pada akhir 1990-an.

"Aku akan senang kembali ke tempatku semula (di timnas), tapi saat ini bermain baik untuk Manchester United, mencetak gol, dan meraih tempatku di tim adalah prioritas. Jika Inggris datang sebagai hasilnya, fantastis," kata pemain 29 tahun itu kepada majalah Sport.

Inggris rencananya akan melakukan laga uji coba lawan Belanda di Amsterdam, Rabu (12/8). Duel itu bisa menjadi kesempatan pertama bagi Owen untuk bergabung dengan John Terry dkk setelah tiga tahun mengalami pasang surut di sepak bola.

Robson Yakin Owen Masuk Timnas Inggris Lagi
Striker Manchester United itu diyakini akan kembali menjadi andalan di skuad The Three Lions.

Bergabungnya Michael Owen ke Manchester United memunculkan banyak optimisme dari berbagai pihak, di mana salah satunya adalah dia kembali menunjukkan performa terbaiknya.

Sejauh ini, di laga pra-musim MU, Owen sukses menunjukkan ketajamannya lagi. Bryan Robson pun yakin jika performa tersebut bisa dipertahankan, pintu masuk ke timnas Inggris akan terbuka lebar untuknya.

"Empat tahun lalu, orang banyak membicarakan Owen dan Wayne Rooney bermain bersama, jadi menjadi sebuah bonus khusus untuk setiap orang jika kedua pemain itu bisa bersama lagi," tandas Robson dikutip SportingLife.

Robson menambahkan keterpurukan Owen di Newcastle United karena dia tak mendapat kecocokan gaya bermain.

"Di MU, dia hanya akan berkonsentrasi di depan. Ketepatan dan rajinnya dia mencari tempat bagus untuk siapa saja. Jika ada peluang untuknya, dia akan mencetak gol dan saya yakin hal ini akan memberinya kesempatan bagus untuk kembali ke skuad Inggris," papar Robson lagi.

London - Fabio Capello minta Michael Owen rajin bikin gol dulu agar bisa masuk ke dalam skuad Inggris. Sir Alex Ferguson selaku bos Owen di Manchester United pun mendukung Capello.

Pekan depan Inggris akan menghadapi Belanda dalam laga persahabatan di Amsterdam. Untuk pertandingan itu, Capello tidak memanggil Owen.

Performa Owen belakangan memang meredup akibat kendala cedera. Namun, kepindahannya ke MU musim panas ini diduga akan membuat penyerang berusia 29 tahun itu dipanggil Capello.

Raul: Owen Top Scorer Premier League

MADRID, KOMPAS.com — Kapten Real Madrid, Raul Gonzalez, menilai, insting mencetak gol Owen lebih baik ketimbang Didier Drogba atau Fernando Torres. Ia yakin, Owen akan menjadi pencetak gol terbanyak Premier League musim depan.

Raul dan Owen sempat berduet di Madrid pada musim 2004-2005. Saat itu, Owen mencetak 13 gol dari 34 penampilannya di Divisi Primera. Raul menilai, di Manchester United, Owen bisa menemukan kembali ketajamannya.

"Tak akan membuatku terkejut bila Michael memimpin (daftar) pencetak gol di Inggris musim depan. Adalah hal gila menyampingkannya," ujar Raul.

"Di sana ada penyerang hebat, seperti Fernando di Liverpool, dan Didier Drogba di Chelsea. Namun, bila Michael tetap bugar, aku bisa melihatnya mencetak gol lebih dari yang lain," lanjutnya.

Raul setuju bahwa Owen sudah tak lagi muda seperti dulu. Namun, dengan pengalaman dan dukungan tim yang solid, hal itu tak akan menghambat Owen menemukan permainan terbaiknya.

"Ia mungkin harus beradaptasi dengan permainan karena ia bertambah tua. Sebab, ia terbiasa dengan semua langkah," ungkapnya.

"Namun, dengan kualitasnya, ia akan masuk dalam (permainan) Manchester. Ini akan menjadi sebuah mimpi untuk seseorang dengan insting gol seperti dia," tandasnya. (GL)

I scored a brilliant one for England U15s at St James’ Park. We were playing Scotland and I remember they had just equalised to bring the game to 1-1. I was standing on the centre spot for the kick-off, the ball was tapped to me and that was it, I was off. I beat about four people and put it past the keeper. Sky were televising it too, so I got to see it afterwards. We ended up winning the game 2-1 and won the Victory Shield as well, so it was quite a good night, all in all.

A hat-trick against the Germans on their own turf: can you explain what went through your mind when the third went in?

It was amazing. The first was very different from the third because it was the equaliser and I thought, “Yes, we’re back in the game!”. Plus I knew at that moment that we could beat them. The second was great and the third was the icing on the cake. A hat-trick in any international is tough, but it’s particularly hard against a team like Germany. It was one of my best moments in an England jersey. It’s also a moment that most England fans can really look back on and feel a sense of pride. That was a great occasion and it was as about exciting as it gets for a footballer.

How long after you joined Real Madrid did you realise that certain players were undroppable – or were you aware of that before you went?

I wouldn’t say players were undroppable, but you didn’t want to give anyone an excuse to drop you. I think I went on a run where I scored for seven games on the spin. Then in the next game I didn’t score for 55 minutes and I was taken off. I was on the bench for the next game. [Laughs] That just shows you how difficult it is. My time in Madrid was better than most people make out.

I started a lot more games than the ones where I came on as sub, though a lot was made of the time I’d spent on the bench. I think I was more involved than most of the players in the squad that season – even the goalkeeper. But playing in Spain was an eye-opener for me, that’s for sure. I played in a lot of different stadiums against some fantastic players and the fans were great. I had a really good relationship with the fans. I loved it and I wouldn’t have changed my time there for anything, but I definitely wanted to come back to the Premiership – it’s a league that I enjoy.

How did you spend your time between training and games in Madrid? Did you socialise with Becks a lot?
Simon, Madrid
Yeah, I did. It was good that we had each other there – we’re mates, we’re English speaking and we get on well. It actually took us longer to learn Spanish because we could get away with talking English with one another, though I could speak a bit of Spanish to get by. And there was Woody [Jonathan Woodgate] as well, so there were a few of us out there. We would go out for meals together – it’s a country for dining out really.

The restaurants are good, the food is fantastic. You can go to a restaurant, have a meal and chat away over a glass of wine into the early – or the late – hours of the morning. It’s difficult in a way because it’s hard to get babysitters and it’s hard to get to know the other lads because you don’t talk the language, but it was a great experience.

How did you feel when you watched Liverpool winning the Champions League Final against AC Milan?

I was watching it in my living room in Madrid with the wife. The kids were upstairs asleep. At 3-0 down I thought they were dead and buried, but once they came back into it after an hour you knew they had it in them. Funny thing was, I was probably the last to text them all, wishing them good luck, and the first to text them with congratulations. We’re still all good mates. Stevie Gerrard, Jamie Carragher and Dietmar Hamann – while he was still there – were my big friends at the club.

I was speaking to them all after the game. I was so pleased for them. And yeah, you do think, What if I was there? What could I have done for them during the game? But I’m not one to look back with regrets. Winning the European Cup is something that I want to do in my career. I’m not jealous, but I’d love to do it. Another part of you also thinks, ‘I’ve been there all that time and I never won it and then I leave and they win’. [Laughs] Proves that I’m crap, really! But seriously, it was great for the lads. I was there for the semi-final against Chelsea and that was a great game as well.

What is the truth behind the whole ‘Will he, won’t he return to Anfield?’ saga before you moved to Newcastle?

It was real. I spoke to the chief executive Rick Parry and I was in Liverpool with Rafa Benitez and we were pretty close to agreeing things. The main issue was Real Madrid and Liverpool settling on a deal and they couldn’t agree a fee – plus Newcastle were quite aggressive in their offer to Madrid. So Madrid felt that Liverpool weren’t matching their valuation of me and I thought it would be good to go to Newcastle.

It was a World Cup year and I wanted to be playing, plus Madrid had bought two more strikers, so I went to St James’ Park and thought it was great. It’s a very similar place to Liverpool in a lot of ways – especially the people, who are football mad. I thought that, as much as it would have been great to go back to Liverpool, going to Newcastle would be just as enjoyable an experience.

How accurate is the newspaper coverage of your life and what’s the most outrageous story that’s ever been written about you?

I’d say that 90 percent of stories about you are part true. I’ve had millions that have been written about me that are wrong. Recently, someone found out that I was taking a helicopter up to Newcastle and the next story was about how ‘Freddie Shepherd is on collision course with Michael Owen over his pilot lessons’, or something. I wouldn’t even dream of trying to learn, but I like sitting in the back and reading the papers.

It’s like that, though, and you soon get used to it. Anything you do, anything you buy or anywhere you’re seen, they’ll get some story out of it. They always get half of the story right and the other half completely wrong. I don’t bother getting the hump with it any more – I’m long past that. I used to think, ‘Who wrote that bad story about me?’ but then you calm down. I’ve got kids and stuff now, so I’m more sensible. And who’s bothered if a few thousand people think that Michael Owen is doing this and that? Denying it only fuels the story, so it’s better to ignore it.

Your face was etched with a slow motion look of horror when you went down during the Sweden match at the World Cup in Germany. What went through your mind?

To start with I thought, ‘That’s me finished in the game and the World Cup’. I knew it was bad straightaway. After that you think about what you need to do. Once that’s done you’re thinking about how long you’re going to be out and what games you’re going to miss. Weirdly you then start feeling sorry for all your family who have flown out to see you, and your sponsors.

Newcastle had only just got me back fit after breaking my foot and I’d only played one game for them, then I got injured and was going to be out for most, if not all, of the next season. Football’s a big business and if I don’t play then there are investments from clubs and sponsors and different things involved. I actually found myself in the treatment room texting everyone to apologise for getting injured, even though it was just a freak incident.

When you get an injury do you lose a yard of pace because you’re worried about having a recurrence if you’re running at full speed?

If it’s muscular, yeah. One of the things I’m doing with this current injury is making sure that all my past injuries are over and done with and rehabilitated. Obviously I had problems with my hamstrings when I was young and they take their toll – your muscles weaken every time you pull one. So this is a good opportunity to strengthen everything up again. And I’m adamant that I’m going to come back as strong and as sharp as when I was 18 or 19. Since then, as with every hamstring injury, you probably lose half a yard, but this time I’m working to get back to where I was when I was younger.

Life after football: manager, TV analyst or horse trainer?

All three are possibilities. I’d love to be in touch with the game as a manager or a coach, or even writing newspaper articles or talking on the telly. Football’s been a massive part of my life so I’d love to stay involved. Horses are a big passion too, so I’ll be out on the gallops most days, but I can’t see myself wanting to be a racehorse trainer. I don’t want to be getting up at five in the morning, dealing with problems and looking after 100 owners. That’s not my idea of a peaceful retirement.

LOS ANGELES - Banyak yang masih menyimpan harapan agar Michael Owen bisa tampil segarang dulu lagi. Gelandang LA Galaxy David Beckham adalah salah satunya. Karena alasan itu kini dia mengaku mendukung keputusan The Wonder Boy bergabung dengan Manchester United.

Menurut Becks (panggilan Beckham) pilihan Owen itu sangatlah tepat. Dia datang kepada sang ahli yakni pelatih The Red Devils Sir Alex Ferguson.

"Ferguson adalah seorang psikolog handal. Saya pikir dia tidak butuh waktu lama untuk mengembalikan kemampuan serta bakat Owen," ungkap Becks seperti disitat Sky Sports, Selasa (18/8/2009).

Beckham yang nota bene merupakan sahabat Owen di Timnas Inggris sangat berharap mantan bintang Liverpool dan Real Madrid itu bisa menemukan ketajamannya seperti dulu lagi. Dia ingin melihat Owen bisa kembali mengenakan seragam Union Jack dan menyumbangkan banyak gol.

The Manchester United boss said: "Michael could do with a goal. He had two chances on Wednesday at Burnley and should have scored them. He knows that.

Wigan - Michael Owen mengaku, dirinya banyak buang peluang di dua laga awal Premier League. Ketika akhirnya mencetak gol perdananya di Premiership untuk Manchester United, kala melawan Wigan Athletic, ia pun lega.

"Saya sepertinya mencetak gol dari peluang terberat yang saya miliki," ujarnya setengah berseloroh kepada MUTV. Pada laga melawan Wigan, Sabtu (22/8/2009) malam WIB, Owen mencetak gol keempat The Red Devils. Laganya sendiri berakhir dengan skor 5-0 untuk MU.

Masuk di menit 72 menggantikan Wayne Rooney, mantan pemain Liverpool dan Newcastle United itu butuh 13 menit untuk menghasilkan gol perdananya musim ini. Ia mengawalinya dengan lari menyilang dari sisi kanan ke sisi kiri, di dalam kotak penalti Wigan. Gerakannya ini ditangkap oleh mata Nani yang tengah membawa bola.

Dengan satu kali sentuhan, Nani mengirim umpan terobosan kepada Owen, dan di sinilah insting mencetak golnya bekerja. Dengan satu sontekan kaki kiri, penyerang berusia 29 tahun ini mengarahkan bola ke tiang jauh. Kiper Chris Kirkland tak mampu menjangkaunya dan gawang Wigan pun bobol.

Bagi Owen, mencetak gol tersebut penuh dengan kelegaan. Ia menyebut, dirinya banyak buang-buang peluang ketika bertanding melawan Birmingham City dan Burnley di dua laga awal Premiership. Padahal hal tersebut tak dialaminya semasa laga pra-musim.

"Saya pikir saya tidak membuang-buang peluang di laga pra-musim, namun saya melewatkan beberapa ketika musim dimulai. Lalu, banyak orang yang mulai meragukan kemampuan saya. Rasanya seperti saya sudah tak mencetak gol selama beberapa tahun! Hal itu selalu saya hadapi selama 10 tahun terakhir dan tampaknya tak akan berubah sampai saya gantung sepatu."

"Sangat menakjubkan rasanya bisa mencetak gol. Saya mencetak beberapa gol di pra-musim tapi rasanya tak seperti ketika mencetak gol di laga kompetitif," tegasnya.

Pujian pun juga meluncur dari mulut sang manajer, Sir Alex Ferguson. Pria asal Skotlandia itu menyebut, gol tersebut membuktikan bahwa Owen masih memiliki label pencetak gol terbaik di tanah Inggris.

MANCHESTER - Kritik pasti akan selalu datang, baik ketika seorang pesepakbola bermain apik atau (apalagi) buruk. Michael Owen toh mengaku sudah kebal.

"Saya gagal mencetak beberapa gol sejak musim baru dimulai, dan seperti biasa, semua langsung menghapus Anda (dari daftar). Seperti saya tidak mencetak gol dalam beberapa tahun saja," keluh Owen kepada BBC, Selasa (25/8/2009).

"Itu adalah sesuatu yang harus saya hadapi selama sepuluh tahun yang aneh sampai sekarang, dan saya kira hal itu tidak akan berubah sampai saya menggantung sepatu," lanjutnya.

"Yang jelas senang rasanya bisa mencetak gol. Saya mencetak beberapa gol dalam laga pra-musim tapi tidak bisa menyamai melakukannya dalam permainan kompetitif," paparnya.

Owen menambahkan: "Saya kemungkinan mencetak gol dalam satu peluang tersulit yang pernah saya dapatkan. Saya mendapat dua saat melawan Burnley dan satu kala melawan Birmingham City, tapi ini adalah peluang bersih keempat yang saya dapatkan."

LONDON, KOMPAS.com - Pelatih tim nasional Inggris, Fabio Capello, masih belum memercayai kemampuan Michael Owen. Jelang kualifikasi Piala Dunia lawan Kroasia, Capello tetap tak memanggil striker Manchester United itu.

Ini untuk kesekian kalinya pemain 29 tahun itu tersisih dari skuad "The Three Lions" sejak Capello menangani John Terry dkk. Meskipun Owen telah mencetak gol pertamanya saat melawan Wigan pekan lalu, Caplello tetap menganggapnya belum mampu bersaing dengan striker-striker muda Inggris.

Untuk duel persahabatan lawan Slovenia, Sabtu (5/9) nanti, Capello lebih memilih Jermain Defoe dan Carlton Cole sebagai cadangan untuk Wayne Rooney dan Emile Heskey. Peter Crouch juga masuk dalam daftar skuad yang nantinya bakal dipasang untuk duel lawan Kroasia di Stadion Wembley, Rabu (9/9). Capello memerlukan kemenangan atas tim asuhan Slaven Bilic tersebut untuk memastikan Inggris lolos ke Afrika Selatan.

Selain Owen, Capello juga mencoret kiper David James menyusul kekalahan Portsmouth dari Manchester City. Sebagai gantinya, Capello memasukkan nama kiper West Ham, Robert Green, yang akan bersaing ketat dengan Ben Foster untuk mendapatkan posisi kiper utama.

Di lini pertahanan, absennya Rio Ferdinand membuka kesempatan Wes Brown menggantikan rekan satu timnya di Manchester United itu. Langkah ini cukup mengejutkan sebab Brown sebetulnya sering dicadangkan di MU akibat cedera engkel dan otot yang menderanya sejak musim lalu.

Di sektor tengah, Aaron Lennon masuk menggantikan Theo Walcott yang cedera. Gol Lennon yang menentukan kemenangan Tottenham Hotspur atas Birmingham City, Sabtu (29/8) kemarin, telah membuat Capello percaya akan kemampuannya.

"Lennon dapat bermain satu lawan satu dan sangat berbahaya karena dia cepat. Secara potensial dia sangat bagus," ujar Capello. "Dia muda, Dia perlu memahami potensinya dan percaya diri atas potensi ini. Itu sangat penting karena beberapa pemain sangat bagus tapi tak memahami potensi mereka."

"Rasa percaya diri kami meningkat karena kini kami bermain seperti sebuah tim dan kami dapat bermain melawan negara mana pun dan kami dapat mengalahkan mereka. Saya yakin itu," tegas mantan pelatih Juventus dan Real Madrid tersebut.

Manchester United striker Michael Owen has revealed that life with the Red Devils suits him perfectly, and fails to see how any player could be unhappy being surrounded by such quality at Old Trafford.

Owen was a surprise summer signing by manager Alex Ferguson, with major doubts over his fitness and form, but he is in no doubt that playing for the champions is doing him good.

"I'm loving every minute of it," he told Sky Sports News.

"Obviously I'm alongside some of the best players, and the best manager and some cracking staff, so if you're not going to enjoy playing for Manchester United then you'll never enjoy playing football. It's great."

Owen also hailed Fabio Capello's England, whom he expects to seal qualification for next summer's World Cup in South Africa with victory over Croatia at Wembley tonight. The national team's solidity at the back under Capello has impressed Owen, while he also feels that the attacking talents of team-mate Wayne Rooney and former colleague Steven Gerrard mean that the Three Lions are a major threat to any side in the world.

He said: "You'd think it's [qualification] going to happen whether it's tonight or in the coming games. The lads have put in some great performances and got us into a position where you'd think we're pretty certain to qualify for the World Cup now, which is fantastic news.

"They're playing well. Very hard to beat, so we're very organised and we've always got a chance with the likes of Wayne Rooney playing, and Steven Gerrard. We've got some world-class players so with the likes of them in your team you're always likely to get a goal or two."

"Musim ini belum sepenuhnya dimulai. Akibat adanya pertandingan internasional, kami belum bisa melakoni laga pada Sabtu dan Rabu, seperti sewajarnya," lanjut Fergie.

Minimal sebagai pemain pengganti sejak awal babak kedua, jadi ada peluang mencetak gol. Babak pertama biarlah duet Wayne Rooney dan Dimitar Berbatov, nah nanti salah satu dari mereka digantikan Michael Owen. Kalau terus jadi cadangan yang belum tentu main, peluangnya masuk skuad timnas Inggris jelas makin kecil bahkan kemungkinan tertutup. Padahal keren banget tuh kalo dalam skuad timnas Inggris untuk Piala Dunia 2010 ada David Beckham dan Michael Owen.

Setiap pemain sebenarnya punya potensi asalkan diberikan kesempatan dan kepercayaan, demikian pula Michael Owen... Mungkin karena ini masih awal musim, jadi Wayne Rooney dan Dimitar Berbatov lebih diprioritaskan tampil untuk mengamankan posisi klasemen. Setelah pertengahan musim, biasanya Sir Alex mulai melakukan perubahan formasi, terlebih pertengahan musim biasanya mulai banyak pemain yang cedera jadi peluang masuk tim utama terbuka bagi siapa saja. Namun saya pribadi lebih senang kalau Michael Owen masuk tim utama karena prestasi dan kemampuannya yang meningkat bukan karena pemain MU lainnya cidera. MU kan adalah suatu kesatuan jadi tentunya kita berharap mereka yang terbaiklah yang mampu mengisi tim utama dan membawa kemenangan dan gelar bagi MU, siapapun dia..

Ferguson is keen to forge a partnership between Wayne Rooney and Dimitar Berbatov, leaving Owen as the odd-man out at Old Trafford.

The 29-year-old has scored just one competitive goal so far for United, a record which is placed in perspective with Owen having started just one game this season. But despite his slow start to life at United, Serbian defender Vidic insists that his close-hand experience of Owen in training has convinced him that the former Liverpool forward is approaching his best form.

Vidic said: "As a defender, I can say with some certainty that it is really tough to mark Michael Owen. He's dangerous from all positions, so you always need to be focused and on your toes.

"I'm sure our fans will soon realise that as well and see the best of him. I am pleased to be on his team.

"Michael has proven his quality through the years so I don't see any reason why he shouldn't be successful. He can help us a lot, so we are all very happy to have him in our team. He is an important signing for the club.

"Manchester United has always had fantastic forwards and certainly we have such a situation in the current team as well. No matter who plays, I'm sure we will be lethal in front of goal."

Ecuadorean winger Antonio Valencia, a £17m summer signing from Wigan, earned praise from Ferguson following his Champions League debut for United in Istanbul.

And Vidic is backing Valencia to be a success in his own right, despite the pressure of having to fill the right-side role vacated by Cristiano Ronaldo.

Vidic said: "Players like Valencia and Owen will make our team better this season. They are very good players who will help us improve. No one at Old Trafford expects Luis to take on Ronaldo's role in the team but he has many qualities of his own.

"I believe he will become an important member of our team over the coming season."

Sir Alex Ferguson has used Owen sparingly since his free-transfer arrival from Newcastle United in July, with the former Liverpool striker starting just one game for the club so far this season.

But Ferguson is expected to make changes to his starting line-up as United begin their defence of the Carling Cup against Mick McCarthy's Wolves and Owen has been pencilled in to start alongside either Danny Welbeck or Federico Macheda.

Having spent much of his career as a first-choice starter, however, Owen admits he is adjusting to watching games from the bench.

He said: "When I start a game I never get nervous, I always feel in control, but when you are sat on the bench, the game rubs off on you. So when you do go onto the pitch, you are a little bit nervous because you have felt all the emotions of everyone sat around you. You kick every ball with the team.

"The first couple of minutes are quite hard. It is not like just going down to the park for a kick-around.

"At this level you have to be right into the game, at the right speed, despite sitting on your backside for the previous hour or however long it is. But you get sent on to get a goal and, against City, thankfully that is what I did.

"Some games you get four chances and don't score, then you get criticised. Other times you get one chance and score. That is the hard bit as a striker – you have to ride all the emotions and waves."

United midfielder Darren Fletcher, whose two headed goals contributed to the 4-3 victory, believes that City's emergence highlights the task facing Ferguson's team as they aim to win an unprecedented fourth successive title.

Fletcher said: "The game against City shows it's going to be a difficult season. The teams in the Premier League get better and better every season.

"It gets harder to win the title every year and we just have to concentrate on ourselves and keep winning matches because if we do that, we'll be there come the end of the season.

"The victory was really special because it's the Manchester derby and because of the way City have started the season.

"It was a top-of-the-table clash of sorts, and it was important that we got three points, especially after the way the game went."

Owen sangat gembira bisa mencetak gol bagi timnya. Apalagi gol tersebut merupakan gol penentu bagi kemenangan MU dalam sebuah derby yang paling mendebarkan.

"Seluruh pemain tampil sangat baik, dan kami terlihat paling layak untuk memenangkan pertandingan tersebut," kata Owen kepada Skyports, seperti dilansir yahoo.com, Senin, 21 September 2009.

Owen merupakan punggawa baru di MU. Pemain didatangkan dengan status free contract itu sampai saat ini masih kesulitan untuk mendapatkan tempat di tim inti.

Dalam setiap pertandingan, Fergie masih lebih senang menurunkan duet Dimitar Berbatov dan Wayne Wooney dalam starting eleven.

Meski berhasil mencetak gol penentu bagi MU, Owen tak ingin jumawa. Sebaliknya, dia mengaku masih butuh waktu untuk beradaptasi dengan permainan Wayne Rooney cs.

"Saya sebenarnya belum tenggalam terlalu dalam," tandas Owen menjelaskan kondisinya di tubuh MU.

VIVAnews - Musim ini Michael Owen membuat gebrakkan dengan pindah ke Manchester United. Mantan anak ajaib Liverpool itu kini bahkan jadi salah satu pahlawan Setan Merah.

Di pertandingan terakhir melawan Manchester City 20 September lalu Owen mencetak gol keempat. Sekaligus gol kemenangan Setan Merah di pertandingan yang berakhir 4-3 itu. Namun keemasan Owen di MU tidak akan dipuji mantan klubnya, Liverpool.

Jamie Carragher sebagai mantan rekan Owen di The Reds menjamin akan ada penyambutan 'dingin' di Anfield ketika MU bertandang pada 25 Oktober mendatang.

"Fans kami biasanya sangat menerima dengan para mantan pemain. Tapi ia (Owen) mungkin dapat perlakuan yang dingin," ujar Carra seperti dilansir The Chester Chronicle, Kamis 24 September 2009.

"Saya mengerti sudut pandang mereka. Biasanya dia bermain untuk kami tapi kini ia berada di kubu rival yang berat. Tentu saja akan ada reaksi dari itu. Tapi itulah sepakbola, dan Michael tahu itu," tambahnya

Keputusan Owen memang sempat dikecam para fans The Reds. Di kubu MU pun kedatangan Owen mendatangkan pertanyaan. Pasalnya pria 29 tahun ini kerap cedera dan lebih sering di ruang medis klub.

Meski demikian, secara perlahan Owen membuktikan kalau nalurinya sebagai pemain masihlah tajam. Di pertandingan pra musim Owen sudah mencetak empat gol. Sedangkan di Premier League, The Wonder Boy menyumbang dua gol.

"Kepindahan itu memang memberikannya kesempatan. Tentu tidak akan menyenangkan untuk para fans, tapi itulah sepakbola," tambah Carra.

Liverpool - Dulu pahlawan, sekarang lawan. Jamie Carragher memprediksikan Michael Owen bakal disambut dingin Liverpudlian kala Manchester United menyambangi Anfield bulan depan.

Owen adalah produk asli binaan The Reds. Pemain yang kini berusia 29 tahun itu juga merupakan salah satu ikon Liverpool pada akhir 90-an. Bersama klub kota pelabuhan itu jugalah ia meraih nama besarnya.

Owen meninggalkan Liverpool pada tahun 2004 untuk bergabung dengan Real Madrid. Semusim bermain untuk Los Blancos, pemain bertinggi 175 cm ini kembali ke Inggris. Ia tak kembali ke Liverpool, melainkan merumput untuk Newcastle United.

Ketika Newcastle degradasi akhir musim lalu dan kontraknya akan segera habis, Owen ditarik oleh MU. Mengingat The Red Devils adalah rival berat Liverpool, bisa dibayangkan sambutan dingin akan diterimanya dari Liverpudlian kala kedua klub bertemu pada 25 Oktober mendatang.

"Fans kami biasanya menyambut baik mantan pemain tetapi mungkin dia akan disambut dingin. Meskipun hal itu sendiri tak akan mengganggunya," ujar Carragher di Daily Mail.

"Saya bisa mengerti sudut pandang fans. Dia dulu bermain untuk kami dan kini bersama rival berat, jadi akan ada sedikit reaksi. Itulah sepak bola dan Michael tahu hal itu," tukasnya.

Carragher sendiri mengaku sedikit terkejut ketika Owen bergabung dengan 'Setan Merah'. Tetapi ia bisa memahami alasan mantan rekannya itu yang sangat ingin bermain di Liga Champions dan Piala Dunia 2010.

"Sedikit mengejutkan. Bukan karena saya meragukan kemampuannya tetapi hal itu terjadi tiba-tiba dan begitu cepat. Selama beberapa saat Anda membayangkan ia akan bergabung dengan siapa dan berikutnya ia tahu-tahu sudah ada di Old Trafford."

The Manchester United striker has told pals he is "absolutely delighted" about the new tot.

He and childhood sweetheart Louise broke the news to their thrilled family this week after getting the all-clear following a three-month scan. The baby is due on March 3.

Owen has three children by wife Louise, 29 - Gemma Rose, six, James Michael, three, and Emily May, one. A family friend said: "Michael and Louise have always been desperate to have a massive family. They are real home birds and their kids are everything to them.

"Louise is really excited but she's persuaded Michael not to ask if it's a boy or a girl. She wants it to be a surprise.

Michael Owen has revealed he feared his career was at a 'dead end' before he joined Manchester United and has dismissed suggestions he has lost his pace in recent seasons.

United boss Sir Alex Ferguson pulled off one of the more surprising transfer deals when signing Owen on a free transfer from Newcastle United in the summer, but it is looking an increasingly shrewd piece of business.

Owen recently came off the bench to score a dramatic winner in the Manchester derby and he revealed he was tipped off about a possible move to Old Trafford by ex-United midfielder Nicky Butt, who played alongside the striker at Newcastle.

"Nicky said: 'Don't tell anyone I've called you, especially not the manager, but he was asking about you, how you are training. So just to put you on your toes in case he does call','' Owen told the Daily Telegraph. "My wife was in another room. I shouted at her and we were both really excited.''

No-brainer

The 29-year-old then spoke to Sir Alex Ferguson, who outlined his intention to sign a proven goalscorer after missing out on Karim Benzema.
Owen added: "As soon as he said 'Michael', I knew it was him [Ferguson]. His voice is pretty distinctive so I knew it wasn't a wind-up.

"He said: 'We are looking for a striker. Carlos [Tevez] is leaving. We went for Benzema and once that was a no-go we looked around for players who are going to score goals.

"Obviously the big question is if you are fit - then it's a no-brainer. Others will see it as a risk but I don't'.''

The former Liverpool ace continued: "I felt I was at a dead end but a road will open up. I am still only 29. I am in my 40s the way a lot of people talk about me! I have 'lost a yard' for the last nine years!

"The hamstring problems early in my career knocked a yard off my pace straight away but since then I have been the same player. I am 100 per cent the same player I was in Munich [scoring that 2001 hat-trick for England].

"I wasn't whizzing past players then like when I was 18. But if there is 10 yards to spring the offside and take a shot, there is no one who will catch me.

"I have those first quick strides but it is not just speed but reactions, game awareness and experience. I've always known where a ball is going to drop more than others. If anything I have improved.''

Owen also admits the goal which secured the thrilling 4-3 win over Manchester Cityearlier this month has helped him to feel part of the club.

"To score such a dramatic goal against your arch rivals did a lot for me," said Owen. "I'd contributed to winning a game. I felt part of the club. I felt great among the lads and the fans.

"I saw my dad after and he looked at me with the 'get in there' type of face that I've seen all my life. I said: 'That's up there, isn't it? Top three, top five?'''

Sejak cedera di Piala Dunia 2006, karier Owen mengalami penurunan drastis. Semuanya berbeda terbalik dibandingkan ketika ia mencetak tiga gol ke gawang Jerman delapan tahun silam pada laga kualifikasi Piala Dunia 2002.

Sebagai mantan pemain termuda yang pernah bergabung bersama "The Three Lions", Owen termasuk salah satu pemain yang digadang-gadang penggemar sepak bola negara tersebut. Sayangnya, kesempatan itu belum pernah terwujud sejak Fabio Capello mengambil alih kursi kepelatihan "St George Cross" setahun lalu. Penampilan terakhirnya terjadi pada Maret 2008.

Kini setelah bergabung bersama MU, Owen mulai menemukan kepercayaan dirinya kembali. Golnya ke gawang Manchester City sepekan lalu membuktikan bahwa ia masih tajam, setajam ketika ia mencetak gol-gol di Piala Dunia 2002 dan Euro 2004.

Untuk membuktikan kepiawaiannya tersebut, Owen bertekad mencetak gol ke gawang Wolfsburg pada matchday kedua fase grup Liga Champions, Rabu (30/9) malam waktu setempat. Bermain di Old Trafford akan memudahkannya menunjukkan kemampuan terbaik di hadapan Capello.

"Capello tidak pernah bicara kepadaku soal situasi sekarang ini. Aku pernah berpas-pasan dengannya di Community Shield. Dia bersama Franco Baldini. Franco melihatku dan mengacungkan jempol kepadaku. Franco bilang: 'Selamat, kami akan terus memantaumu'," lanjut mantan pemain Liverpool tersebut.

Owen pernah 89 kali membela Inggris dalam laga internasional mereka. Dari penampilan itu, pemain setinggi 175 cm itu telah mencetak 40 gol.

He believes his quick thinking prevented a more serious groin injury when he limped off against Wolfsburg last week.

‘The older you get the more you get to learn your body,’ said Owen, 29. ‘Probably a few years ago I’d have carried on and pulled something and been out for a couple of months or weeks at least. I felt something coming. If I’d done another sprint I think I would have pulled my groin.’

Michael Owen has ensured that his first return to Anfield since moving to Manchester United will be a hostile one by eulogising the joys of working with Sir Alex Ferguson at "the biggest club in the world".

Owen was substituted midway through the first half of United's Champions League win over Wolfsburg last week with a slight groin strain but is due to resume training this week and expects to be fit when Manchester United face Liverpool on Oct 25.

"I came off just before my groin went," he said, "so instead of three or four weeks, it's only three or four days, but that's something you get with experience."

The striker never received the best of welcomes to his former home while with Newcastle, thanks to lingering resentment at the manner of his 2004 departure to Real Madrid, and his decision to join Liverpool's fiercest rivals on a free transfer this summer has only served to fan the flames.

Anfield's indignation, though, has been further fuelled by Owen's consistent failure to address the issue of becoming the first player since Paul Ince to move indirectly between the two clubs, and his latest remarks are sure to be taken to heart by fans still seething at his choice of new employer.

"It's fantastic working with Sir Alex," Owen said. "It's everything you would expect of a top, top team, probably the biggest club in the world. Everything from the kit man to the girls who work in the canteen and the manager are just first class."

Owen is yet to score in just three starts for United in all competitions, but has scored twice as an impact substitute, most notably with his late winner in the Manchester derby.

While he has succeeded in winning over United's supporters, initially sceptical about his move, he will doubtless need a concerted run in the team without injury interruption to win over Fabio Capello and regain his place in the England squad in time to be involved in next summer's World Cup.

Sources close to the Italian have continually insisted that Owen does not offer enough outside the penalty area to fit into Capello's industrious style of play and he has not featured under the current regime since the 1-0 friendly defeat to France last March, having fallen behind the likes of Emile Heskey, Carlton Cole and the in-form Jermain Defoe in the pecking order.

While he is unlikely to return to the squad as anything other than cover, the forward has not given up hope that, if he can avoid the injury problems which have plagued much of his career, he may yet add to his tally of 89 caps and 40 goals for the national side.

"That is the ultimate aim for every English footballer," he added. "To get into that squad and go to the World Cup, but that's not until the summer. I still have six or seven months to do as well as possible for Manchester United and if that's the case, then hopefully he will be watching."

Meanwhile, United have run the risk of attracting further criticism from Italy after sending a scout to watch two of Roma's most promising starlets in a youth team game. United scout David Williams is believed to have watched Gianluca Caprari and Giammario Piscitella, both wingers, during their side's 1-1 draw with Empoli.

The Premier League side's acquisition of Davide Petrucci, described as the jewel of Roma's prolific youth system, left the Serie A team furious, while they have been widely condemned in Italy for bringing in Federico Macheda, the teenage striker, from Lazio, and the Italian under-16 captain Michele Fornasier from Fiorentina. The Tuscan club are believed to have lodged a complaint with Fifa over United's actions, while Empoli are believed to be upset at losing Alberto Masacci to Old Trafford.

Michael Owen is looking forward to getting back playing after injury curtailed his involvement in United's last two games - but there's one forthcoming fixture that he's really got his eye on.

Owen was substituted in the first half of United's 2-1 Champions League Group B win over Wolfsburg, and the groin injury also kept him out of the 2-2 draw with Sunderland.

Now he has two weeks to get himself sharp when the Reds resume Barclays Premier League duties against Bolton after the international break.

The following week, United travel to Anfield in what is likely to be a feisty return for the former Liverpool front man. Owen's played at Anfield with Newcastle, but going back with United is a different proposition altogether.

"It will be different, it'll be a bit noisier!" he told Sky Sports. "I've been back before with Newcastle a couple of times, so I've played there for an opposing team. But I'm certainly looking forward to this game.

"As usual between United and Liverpool, it'll be a competitive game between two of the world's top, top teams. The teams are more equally matched perhaps than when I went back with Newcastle, so it should be a good game and an exciting day."

In an very open start to the league campaign, Owen is all too aware of the value of victory - not just for local rivalry.

"It's still early in the season but you don't want to lose too many games or drop too many points at this stage," he added. "All the teams seem quite tightly packed together [at the top], so it's still all to play for."

Manchester - Michael Owen sudah beberapa waktu tidak dipanggil membela timnas Inggris karena berbagai sebab. Bagaimana pun, Owen tetap yakin penampilan apiknya akan membuat dia kembali.

Michael Owen is under no illusions that he will receive a hostile reception when he returns to Anfield next weekend.

Former Liverpool hero Owen returns to his former home next Sunday for the first time with Manchester United since his surprise switch to Old Trafford. Owen has been warned by former Reds team-mate Jamie Carragher that he could be the subject of stick from Liverpool fans for joining their arch-rivals.

The 29-year-old is fully expecting to receive jeers from the Anfield faithful - and he insists the reception will not bother him.

Owen told the Mail on Sunday Magazine: "I'm human. I'd prefer people to sit down and recognise what you did for them and for the team in years gone past but I'm pretty realistic as well and now that I'm playing for their arch rivals... I'm not holding my breath, put it that way."

Former Newcastle and Real Madrid Owen also revealed he has no problem not being a regular starter at United. Owen has found his path to the starting XI blocked by Wayne Rooney and Dimitar Berbatov, but insists he will not complain about his lack of action.

"I think if I was 19 or 20, playing really well and scoring loads of goals and being constantly on the bench, then I'd definitely have a different outlook than now, when I've played a long time," added Owen.

"I've not been left out of the squad since I've been there and it's great. I feel part of the team, part of the squad.

"The manager's said to me that I'll play my fair share of games. In any case. if you'd said to me in the summer, 'You're going to go to Manchester United and be the fourth-choice striker and start 10 games and come off the bench 10 times, and that's your lot', then I would have snapped your hand off."

Sir Alex Ferguson believes Michael Owen deserves a hero's reception when he runs out for Manchester United at Anfield on Sunday and has claimed the former Liverpool striker remains one of the best goalscorers in world football.

United manager Ferguson will have Wayne Rooney back in his team after the striker came through a full training session yesterday, but Owen will be on the bench at least against his old club as United attempt to make it five defeats in a row for their fierce rivals.

Ferguson surprised everybody this summer when he signed injury-prone Owen on a free transfer after he left Newcastle.

He has scored only twice this season, including a dramatic winner in the 4-3 derby victory against Manchester City, but is likely to play some part at Anfield.

'He is capable of scoring in any type of match, including the highest level,' added Ferguson. 'He has done that throughout his career. He has got a proven record in that respect. We knew that when we bought him. If you are looking only at his c.v. then every club in the world would have taken him.

'The Liverpool thing was never mentioned when we met in the summer. I never even thought about it. I made my mind up about Michael and there was no negotiation. He was desperate to come. It was so simple. He wanted to be back at a top club and have European football.'

With Rooney back in full training and Ryan Giggs also fit, United will be strengthened as they look to earn revenge for the two Barclays Premier League defeats inflicted on them by Liverpool last season.

Michael Owen will be training this morning. The team will probably be announced after the session and he will be desperately hoping his name is read out by Sir Alex Ferguson or he will be in the worst position tomorrow - on the bench as a sitting target, listening to those Liverpool supporters who cannot forgive him for playing for Manchester United.

It didn't surprise me that he signed for United. Michael is a driven and ambitious footballer and this was the best move available to him. Until Sir Alex came in, he had been linked with Stoke and Hull. What would you do?

So far, it has been a slow start for him, apart from scoring the winning goal against Manchester City. That was typical Michael; finding the space, vacating the central area and the traffic building up there, moving intelligently on to a Ryan Giggs pass and finishing. The man has ice in his veins.

He's a different player now. His body shape has changed, his injuries have cost him so much of his career. His pace was his great weapon, but he may not have sprinted at full speed since he was 21, because of the fears about his hamstrings. He doesn't trust his body.

You hear the buzz about a young player a long time before he walks into the dressing room. Michael Owen was the talk of Liverpool among the coaches and the players. He'd scored in a televised game for England's schoolboys. We knew what was coming. What we didn't appreciate is how good he was going to be.

Young players need to be developed; they may have the skill and the eye for goal against players of their own age, but they need to learn the game when they come into the big league.

Not Michael. He knew where to run, how to use his pace. He was intelligent and, of course, he could score goals. His runs and his pace made him a dream to play with for any midfielder.

He made me feel like the quarterback. I'd hit a long pass and some of them were hopelessy overhit, but he would be on to it like a flash. Media reports would say 'a terrific pass from Redknapp', but really it was Michael's run and his pace which made it appear that way. He was like a greyhound.

I always remember Michael at the party we threw at the club after winning the three trophies in 2001. Michael was having his photograph taken with the cups and I asked him which one was his favourite.

'The FA Cup,' he said. 'Why?' I asked him. 'Because every kid in this country dreams of winning the FA Cup. It's special.'

And then he said it was easy to work out which one I liked the most. 'Go on then, tell me,' I said. 'The UEFA Cup,' he said. 'How do you know that?' I asked. 'Because before every European game we could see it in your eyes, in the way that desire surged through your veins. We knew it was the one you really, really wanted.'

That same desire surged through Michael's veins in every game. In every training session, too. I know Fergie loves him because the boy is just a joy to work with. Never any trouble, always 100 per cent.

He never wanted to be rested. He never liked it when I rotated him with Robbie Fowler or the other strikers we had at the club at the time. 'I'll rest when I've retired,' he used to say to me.

He has two great qualities. Great enthusiasm for the game and great confidence in himself. The kind of confidence that, I believe, will enable him to get back to his very best now he is at Manchester United.

He might have had his injury problems but his game has developed and he remains a top, top player. This is someone who always delivers in the big games. He is very clever when it comes to moving between the lines, dropping off into midfield and moving into the space between defenders.

He can work brilliantly off a centre forward, the way I often had him playing with Emile Heskey. It was a tremendous privilege to work with him for six years.

When Fergie signed Michael in the summer, I thought it was a very astute piece of business. Here, after all, was a player of the highest quality available for nothing. Michael will do well for United. Of that I am absolutely certain.

By joining United, Owen has crossed a line no player reared by Liverpool should ever go over. We could have accepted Chelsea, Arsenal or even Everton. After all, his dad played for Everton and others have gone across the park.

But not United, not when you consider how bitter the rivalry has become in recent years. Can you imagine Steven Gerrard or Jamie Carragher doing that?

He has fanned the flames, as well, with comments about playing for the biggest club and greatest fans in the world. It shows a shocking lack of respect for Liverpool supporters and he can be sure of a red-hot reception.

It was a bit mixed when he returned to Anfield with Newcastle, but it won't be this time. He has gone too far and those who stuck up for him last time will be lining up with the rest on this occasion and giving him both barrels.

You would have hoped he might have learned a bit from the way Robbie Keane refused to celebrate when he scored in Tottenham's 3-1 defeat at Anfield last season. That showed Robbie at least has a bit of dignity about him, but Owen clearly hasn't.

He was never as popular as Robbie Fowler, mainly because he always seemed more interested in England than Liverpool. It would always be an England game he was targeting when he was recovering from one of his injuries - and it was the same when he was at Newcastle.

In fact, even Newcastle fans got frustrated with him and ended up calling him Emo, England's Michael Owen.

He's finally listened to me. I told him he should join United when he was at school!

There were a lot of clubs looking at him at that age, even though he was already training with Liverpool. He went to United for two weeks and I asked him to keep them in mind. When he eventually got there, I was delighted.

I'm sure that if he plays, he'll score. He's been doing it all his life. He was doing it when he came to us at the High School at the age of 11 and he'd been doing it before that.

I could see the first time I saw him that he was going to be special. He showed the potential and he was scoring goals for fun, a lot of them terrific goals. He was prolific in the box. He had that predator's instinct.

I'd like to think the Liverpool fans will give him a good reception. They've done it in the past for their heroes who've gone back.

He was so outstanding that in his very early days I told him he should get an agent to look after his commercial interests. I recommended Tony Stephens and the relationship proved very successful.

Steve Heighway, who was in charge of what was the School of Excellence at the time, was so convinced about him that he came to see me personally about signing him. Normally, he would just send a memo.

Later, he did the same with Steven Gerrard and, indirectly, the promise of that pair, along with Jamie Carragher, Stephen Warnock and players like David Thompson, who had a lot of ability but later was affected by injuries, led to me recommending that we bought land at Kirkby, where we built our academy.

I would hope the fans won't have a go at him when he returns, even though he's now with our big rivals. Normally, the Liverpool supporters are remarkable in the way they welcome players back.

I hope he gets a similar reception to the one Kevin Keegan got when he came back with Hamburg.

He came through the system and from the start he always looked as if he would be a top player. He's carried that on through every level. It was the whole package with Michael. It was more difficult to keep him out than put him in because of his ability.

He was only 17 when he got in the side (he came on as a substitute and scored a consolation goal as Liverpool lost 2-1 to Wimbledon at Selhurst Park) and maybe he could have got in a bit earlier, but you are always a bit worried about size in a player so young. But there were no problems once he got in there. He's been a great player.

Obviously, he's with the opposition now, but Liverpool supporters should never forget what he did for us. At times he was fantastic.

Hopefully, there'll be no problems. It's always going to be a problem whoever you are playing for Manchester United at Anfield, but let's hope he is shown respect for what he did for the club.

A lot of fans wanted Michael back at the club but it was clear Rafa didn't. He obviously feels that Michael wouldn't fit into the style he wants to play. Michael will probably be mindful of that and may want to prove a point.

The fans will certainly be wary of what he can do, as will the players. Liverpool need to make sure he doesn't come back to haunt them.

He was always popular with the fans, maybe not so much as some of us who came from the city, but he still had a rapport.

The trouble is now not everyone will reason with the move he has made. I'm not sure going to Manchester United is something I could have done, but Michael is a lot more businesslike in his decisions.

You don't know what other offers he had. It's not as if he has moved from Liverpool directly to United - that wouldn't happen, there have been clubs in between - but all the same he'll get a hot reception.

We saw what the United fans gave Paul Ince a few years back when he returned and I think Michael will get the same from the Anfield crowd on Sunday afternoon.

ALEX FERGUSON has warned the Anfield hate mob they will not faze Michael Owen.

The Manchester United striker faces a rough reception tomorrow when he returns to Liverpool - the club he served for eight years.

United boss Ferguson said: "I don't think it will bother Michael. Everyone wants to be liked but he's got the experience to handle it. It will be interesting to see what kind of reaction he gets.

"There have been very few players who have played for both clubs.

"Paul Ince got a bad reception from our fans when he joined Liverpool.

"Michael may well get that again on Sunday but it is difficult to say."

Owen, 29, was booed when he returned to Anfield with Newcastle in May and can expect twice the abuse now he plays for the Kop's most hated rivals.

But Ferguson believes the hotshot can ram the taunts back down the Liverpool fans' throats with a winning goal.

He is expected to come on as a sub in the Premier League clash and Fergie insists he is sharp enough to affect the outcome of the game.

The Old Trafford chief said: "He is capable of scoring in any type of match, including at the highest level. He has done that in his career."

Ferguson maintains Owen is still a master at beating the offside trap - just as he did in the closing seconds to win the Manchester derby.

The Scot added: "There is no one better at holding the line in the last third of the field. He is very seldom offside and that is down to his experience."

Owen remains the third top forward in Liverpool's history, boasting 258 goals in all competitions between 1996 and 2004.

And Fergie admitted: "The goals he scored mark him down as one of their best-ever strikers."

Owen will be centre of attention tomorrow as he makes his first return to Liverpool - the club which nurtured him and for whom he scored 158 goals - as a player for their fiercest rivals.

United's signing of the one-time Anfield hero raised some eyebrows in the summer but the 29-year-old repaid some of Ferguson's faith with a dramatic derby winner against Manchester City last month.

Now United will be hoping he can repeat the trick in a Barclays Premier League game which Liverpool, after four successive defeats in all competitions, can ill afford to lose.

'That will never be forgotten,' Ferguson said. 'I don't know if it puts him in the history books but it will certainly never be forgotten.

'He is only just starting with us. He has only been here a few months and I hope the boy is here for a long time.

'I think he is well capable of doing that. He is showing he is a terrific professional, he lives his life the right way and there are no complications with him.'

Owen has largely been restricted to substitute's duties since moving to Old Trafford and got another 20 minutes in Wednesday's Champions League win at CSKA Moscow.

But with Wayne Rooney still a doubt for tomorrow due to a calf injury, he could be in line for a start despite the likelihood of a hostile reception. Ferguson added: 'When he came on on Wednesday I think he did very well, his movement troubles opponents.

'There is nobody better at holding the line in the last third than him, he is very seldom offside.

'That is experience, of course, but also talent.'

After an injury-ravaged spell at Newcastle, the opportunity for Owen to join United came as a surprise.

With an England World Cup place to aim for, Owen is hoping the move can resurrect his international career. His injury record is a factor Ferguson had to take into consideration and the player can perhaps be grateful to a former Newcastle team-mate and ex-United star for helping secure the move.

'Michael is capable of scoring in any type of match at the highest level,' Ferguson said. 'He has proved that, we knew that.

'Looking at his CV, I think any club in the world would have taken him.

'The issue was his playing record over the last two or three years and that obviously put some clubs off.

'But I spoke to one or two people about him - Nicky Butt was almost forcing me to sign him, he had so much good to say about the lad.

'I think it was good advice and I took that on board.'

Rooney's fitness will be assessed at training today, his 24th birthday.

The former Everton star was injured during England's World Cup qualifier in Ukraine a fortnight ago.

Darren Fletcher is another doubt for the game but Ryan Giggs and Patrice Evra return after suffering knocks against Bolton last week.

Victory for United would extend their advantage over Liverpool in the table to 10 points.

Fabio Capello says Michael Owen is his 'tormentor'
Fabio Capello has described his "torment" over the omission of striker Michael Owen from his England squads.

Capello omitted Owen from his most recent England selections for the World Cup qualifiers against Ukraine and Belarus, with the Manchester United forward having suffered injury shortly before the squad was named.

Attending at a football seminar in his native Italy, Capello described Owen as a "tormentor", just as his Italian counterpart Marcello Lippi suffers constant media criticism for overlooking the Sampdoria playmaker, Antonio Cassano.

"I have (Michael) Owen, I also have a tormentor. Everyone has one," Capello said.

Owen, scorer of 40 goals for England, has not appeared in the national team jersey since the March 2008 friendly defeat to France in Paris, although Capello has insisted he will consider the former Liverpool, Real Madrid and Newcastle player as England move closer to World Cup 2010 in Italy.

Meanwhile, Italian sporting authorities have reacted with dismay at Capello's concerns over violence caused by so-called "ultra" fans in his home country.

Capello said he was ''saddened'' by the problems at Italian football grounds and claims watching games in England and Spain is a more spectator-friendly experience.

He said: ''As it is, the ultras whatever they want.

''In the stadium they can insult everything and anyone.

''In Spain, instead it's different.

''There is more respect and the families go to the stadium with their children, it's a different world.

''I remember once (in Spain), a fan threw me a paper ball and he was taken away.

''In England the stadia are full, there is a desire to go to the stadium, nothing ever happens and the stewards do a perfect job.

''I am saddened with what is happening in Italy, the decline will be more evident, and what only needs to be done is to apply the law.

''A decision must be taken by the authorities and by the clubs so that people return to the stadiums and they are more welcoming.''

The game in Italy has been plagued by violence in recent years but no major incidents have taken place this season after the anti-violence measures already in place were tightened.

Unruly spectators face the prospect of tougher penalties, while officials have had more control of fans entering stadia thanks to electric turnstiles which read tickets with fans' names on them.

Security cameras have also been installed at grounds across the country.

Additionally, clubs are banned from selling blocks of tickets to visiting fans, and they now have the have the authority to prevent suspected hooligans from entering stadia.

But the Italian Olympic Committee president Gianni Petrucci was unhappy with Capello's remarks.

''The ultras are in charge? Absolutely not,'' Petrucci said.

''Capello has coached in Italy, I am his friend, and I don't like it when they go abroad and start making judgements about their own country. Those are comments that don't thrill me.''

Italian football federation president Giancarlo Abete added: ''At times the image that is shown of our fans can be such that it confuses the poor behaviour of a small group with the behaviour of the majority.

''Results have shown that episodes of violence have decreased.''

SIR Alex Ferguson hailed Michael Owen after the striker rolled back the years to fire United through to the last eight of the Carling Cup.

Owen produced a vintage second half strike to seal a 2-0 win against a spirited Barnsley.

The United striker is desperate to earn an England recall, and will hope his strike will send another reminder to Fabio Capello, whose side face Brazil next month.

Ferguson said: “It was a fantastic goal. He had such quick feet, it was a marvelous finish, just a great goal.”

It remains to be seen if it will be enough to catch Capello’s attention. The Italian was not on hand to see the stunning strike and has failed to witness any of Owen’s three goals since his summer move to United.

But Owen insists he is calm about his international future.

"England is not something I go on the pitch thinking about, I just go out there trying to help the players,” he said. "It's up to the England manager what he thinks."

Another player hoping to figure in Capello’s plans, Danny Welbeck, fired United ahead after just six minutes to put the Carling Cup holders in charge.

But United didn’t have it all their own way with Gary Neville shown a straight red for a lunge in the second half.

Ferguson said: "I've just seen the sending off, and Gary did follow through with the tackle and caught the player.

“It was not high, just above the ankle, but in the present climate I would say that the referee was probably correct.”

Ferguson added: "Barnsley worked very hard and put in a lot of effort, and they had one or two chances after we went down to ten men.

“But over all I think we deserved to win the game and I'm delighted with the response from the players.”

Meanwhile Barnsley confirmed they will launch a full investigation after the catering area in the concourse of the visiting end of Oakwell was vandalised.

Michael Owen hanya butuh kepercayaan untuk lebih sering tampil sebagai starter untuk membuktikan naluri ketajamannya dalam mencetak gol masih baik. Sayang sepertinya Sir Alex lebih percaya duet Rooney-Berbatov di lini depan MU. Namun bila melihat permainan MU akhir-akhir ini, sepertinya tidak ada salahnya Sir Alex mencoba susunan duet striker yang berbeda meskipun saya pribadi melihat Sir Alex berusaha agar Wayne Rooney selalu mendapat prioritas di tim utama karena Sir Alex tidak ingin Rooney yang masih muda ini sakit hati dan pindah ke klub lain (pendapat pribadi lho !)

MANCHESTER, KOMPAS.COM - Michael Owen merasa puas sekaligus senang bisa mengalahkan Barnsley di ajang Piala Carling. Mantan pemain Liverpool yang kini memperkuat Manchester United, berhasil menyumbang satu gol di menit 59.

“Tentu saja kami sangat senang bisa mengalahkan Barnsley dengan skor 2-0. Meski kami tidak bermain bagus, terutama di babak pertama, namun kami bisa melewati pertandingan ini dengan baik dan lolos ke putaran berikutnya," jelasnya.

Pemain asal Inggris ini mengaku tidak bermain total dalam pertandingan tersebut. Ia merasa frustasi dengan media yang seakan memojokkan MU, terutama dirinya. “Orang menilaiku hanya bisa mencetak gol,” keluhnya.

"Aku mulai diturunkan sejak 10 hari yang lalu ketika melawan Bolton. Kami berhasil menang dengan skor 2-1. Aku cukup puas dengan penampilanku. Meski tidak bermain baik atau mencetak gol. Mediapun hanya memberiku nilai 3 atau 4 dalam pertandingan itu. Tapi di pertandingan selanjutnya, nilaiku naik menjadi 6 atau 7," jelasnya.

Owen pun memberikan pujian pada Barnsley atas permainan mereka yang bagus sehingga sempat merepotkan kubu MU. “Semalam merupakan pertandingan yang berat bagiku. Terutama di babak pertama. Jika aku diberi kesempatan menilai performaku sendiri ketika melawan Bolton, aku akan memberi angka 5. Sedangkan pertandingan melawan Barnsley, aku pantas mendapatkan nilai 7 atau 8. Michael Owen admits to feeling exasperated by the expectations placed on him after scoring his third goal of the season at Barnsley on Tuesday night.

The Manchester United striker was afford a rare start in the Carling Cup clash and did not disappoint as he put the game beyond Barnsley with his side's second goal at Oakwell.

Owen found the target with a clinical finish just shy of the hour mark but post-match his comments suggested a frustration at how his time at Old Trafford had been reported to date.

The England hopeful believes too much emphasis is placed on the goals he scores rather than his overall performance.

He said: "A start and a goal, you can't ask for more than that. It is how people judge me unfortunately.

"I started a game against Bolton and was pretty pleased and thought I played pretty well. Then I looked at the papers and was given a three or four.

"But in this game I played pretty average and scored a goal and I'll probably get seven out of 10.

"I think I deserved a five in this game and seven or eight from the Bolton game."

His manager Sir Alex Ferguson certainly seems happy enough with his performance, as he added: "It was a fantastic goal, he had such quick feet, it was a marvellous finish."

While United will be pleased to have reached the competition's last eight the night was marred somewhat by crowd violence and an injury to Danny Welbeck.

The 18-year-old, who scored United's first goal, had to be replaced in the second half with a knee injury.

It is thought Welbeck will have a scan on Wednesday as United look to learn the full extent of the injury.

Manchester United defender Jonny Evans believes Michael Owen is proving at Old Trafford he remains a class act.

Owen, a surprise signing from Newcastle in the summer, scored his third goal of the season in the Carling Cup victory against Barnsley at Oakwell.

It was a clinical finish as he foxed goalkeeper Luke Steele after he made the most of a delightful ball from Fabio. Whether Owen, who started on the bench in the defeat by Liverpool, can win a recall to the England squad remains to be seen.

But Evans has no doubts at all about his team-mate's quality and said: 'Every time Michael comes on he gets into really good positions.

'He changed the game a bit for us on Sunday. It was the first time we really looked like getting in behind Liverpool.

'It was good for him against Barnsley to get another goal. It was a great finish from him. He made it look easy by passing the ball into the corner.'

Evans is also predicting a bright future for 18-year-old striker Danny Welbeck, who opened the scoring in the fifth minute.

Welbeck came off in the second half and is having a scan on the knee injury he suffered.

Evans said: 'Danny is improving all the time and learning from the first-team lads. He is a fantastic talent and can go all the way. He is so hard to play against. He has great skill as well.'

Despite his night ending on a sour note it could not dampen Welbeck's mood of elation at securing a place in the last eight of the competition.

Welbeck scored the winner against Wolves in the third round and was part of the United side that lifted the trophy last season when they defeated Tottenham.

He said: 'It is great to get further in the cups. I'm already looking forward to the quarter-finals. We'll certainly enjoy it and do our best.

'We controlled the game against Barnsley in the second half. The youngsters did well and the experienced players in the team helped us massively.'

United's rising stars are also versatile as Rafael proved against the Coca-Cola Championship side.

The Brazilian was switched from full-back to a central midfield role and looked comfortable in that position.

However, his polished performance came as no surprise to manager Sir Alex Ferguson.

He said: 'Darron Gibson was injured so we didn't have many options. Rafael trains with the first team all the time, he's mobile and quick enough with good feet.

'Playing away from home in a cup tie is a completely different experience from playing at Old Trafford. Last year we had some good home draws and it was good experience for the lads.'

Sudah tiga gol Owen sumbangkan buat 'Setan Merah' usai bergabung musim panas ini, dengan yang teranyar dia cetak dalam laga Piala Carling menghadapi Barnsley, Rabu (28/10/2009) kemarin.

Saat itu Owen menerima sodoran bola dari Anderson, mengelabui pemain bertahan lawan dan langsung bergegas mendekati gawang. Di dalam area penalti dia lantas menyontek bola ke arah tiang jauh yang tak bisa digapai kiper. Gol.

Dicatat The Sun, penyerang 29 tahun tersebut ternyata juga mencetak seluruh golnya untuk MU musim ini di dalam kotak 16,5 meter. Ketajaman di kotak penalti lawan itu juga sudah dia pelihara jauh di awal-awal karirnya.

Saat masih membela Liverpool, 1996 sampai 2004, sekitar 84 persen golnya --99 gol-- dari jumlah 118 gol sudah Owen lahirkan dari dalam kotak penalti. Dari total 26 gol yang dia buat di Newcastle United pun 85 persennya lagi-lagi dia cetak dari posisi serupa.

Taring Owen di dalam kotak penalti ini pun dinilai masih tetap setajam dulu. Tanya saja pemain bertahan Barnsley Robert Kozluk yang kini bersua Owen lagi setelah pernah dibuat kelimpungan oleh Owen, yang berseragam Liverpool, pada Oktober 1997. Saat itu Kozluk melakukan debut untuk Derby.

Mike Phelan believes Manchester United have been right to break Michael Owen in gently following his summer move from Newcastle.

The striker has had to bide his time during the early part of the Premier League season, with Wayne Rooney and Dimitar Berbatov ahead of him in the pecking order.

He was given a starting opportunity in the Carling Cup game against Barnsley on Wednesday and responded with a fine goal to seal a 2-0 success.

It now remains to be seen whether Owen will keep his place for the home clash with Blackburn, but assistant manager Phelan has been pleased with his progress.

"Michael has come to Manchester United as it a fresh challenge for him," said Phelan.

"We can use him as and when we need to use him. He is not at the forefront of everything.

"It gives him time to prepare and be ready for games like Barnsley.

"Alternatively we can bring him on as substitute or start him in a first-team game."

Phelan thinks Owen demonstrated with his goal against Barnsley that he remains one of the deadliest finishers in the business.

"Michael is always looking and always on the move," said Phelan.

"He was quick to take the shot. He got it out of his feet quickly and caught the keeper by surprise.

"That is the quality of Michael Owen and those qualities are of benefit to us."

Semenjak menangani timnas Inggris, Capello belum pernah memanggil Owen. Tanpa Owen, Capello berhasil membangun skuad yang solid. Lolosnya Inggris ke putaran final Piala Dunia 2010 Afrika Selatan adalah bukti tak terbantahkan.

Namun, prestasi itu tak cukup membuat publik berhenti mendesak Capello memanggil Owen. Menurut mereka, Owen masih penyerang terbaik Inggris. Mereka menyodorkan statistik 40 gol yang diciptakan Owen dalam 89 pertandingan internasionalnya.

Cassano pernah menjadi anak emas di AS Roma. Namun, karena egoismenya merusak tim, ia dibuang ke Real Madrid. Di sana, kariernya merosot, terutama ketika Capello memegang tampak kepelatihan di sana.

Cassano berusaha berubah menjadi anak baik ketika pindah ke Sampdoria. Usahanya membuahkan hasil. Ia menjadi pemain yang semakin dewasa dan matang. Sayang, perubahan positif itu tak memulihkan reputasi masa lalunya di muka Lippi.

Nasib Owen tak lebih baik dari Cassano. Setelah diangkat setinggi langit oleh Liverpool, ia hengkang ke Madrid. Karena dianggap gagal, Madrid membuangnya ke Newcastle. Di Newcastle, ia dibebat cedera berkepanjangan yang berdampak buruk terhadap kualitas permainannya.

Manchester - Karir Michael Owen di Real Madrid bisa dibilang kurang sukses. Tapi ada sesuatu yang membuat penyerang Manchester United itu ingin kembali ke Stadion Santiago Bernabeu.

Owen pernah membela Madrid selama setahun di musim 2004-2005. Tapi keinginan Owen untuk kembali ke Bernabeu bukan untuk memperkuat Los Blancos lagi, tapi ingin memenangi titel Liga Champions.

Final Liga Champions 2010 memang akan digelar di stadion kebanggaan warga Madrid pada Mei tahun depan. Owen yang kini berusia 29 tahun berharap bisa hadir di sana bersama MU dan lalu memenanginya.

"Memenangi Liga Champions adalah mimpi semua orang. Datang ke klub seperti MU membuat Anda selalu berkompetisi di tingkat tertinggi," ulas Owen di situs resmi 'Setan Merah'.

Bersama klub yang menyemainya sejak junior, Liverpool, Owen gagal menjuarai Liga Champions sehingga salah satu alasannya hijrah ke Madrid adalah demi memburu piala prestisius itu.

Namun di Madrid Owen gagal. Ambisi memenangi Liga Champions barangkali nyaris dilupakan Owen saat memperkuat Newcastle United. Kini, asa itu timbul lagi dengan membela MU.

"Itu adalah salah satu hal yang saya cari saat pertama saya diminta bergabung. Ini adalah salah satu hal yang terbayang di benak--bermain di ajang besar bersama klub besar adalah mimpi tiap orang," kata Owen.

England coach Fabio Capello suggested last week that the subject of a possible international recall for Michael Owen is one that has begun to torment him. It would appear, though, that the feeling is not mutual.

Owen’s desire to add to his 89 England caps is not in doubt. Nor is the quality he would bring to a squad not exactly replete with world-class centre forwards, were he to be fully fit and in form.

However, as Owen prepared to deputise for new father Wayne Rooney for Manchester United in the Champions League, he revealed that the subject of a return to the England ranks is no longer something that occupies his mind.

Asked if a good performance against CSKA Moscow tonight would help his England chances, Owen said: ‘Yeah, I suppose so. You have to be careful what you say in case your words get twisted. But it’s not something I really think about now.

‘The last squad I was in was a year ago, so it’s something you lot [the media] probably talk about a lot more than I think about.

‘I’d like to play for England again, that’s the bottom line. But if I do I do, if I don’t, I don’t.
‘But first things first - I want to play well and score goals for Manchester United.

‘I don’t go to bed thinking if I score it could possibly influence England. England can take care of itself.’

Owen’s public utterances have been a little peculiar since United gave him the opportunity to resurrect his career after his release from Newcastle United in the
summer. More often than not, he has appeared touchy and defensive.

Focus: Owen says he wants to concentrate on playing well for Manchester United

Only last week after a superbly taken goal against Barnsley, he appeared to complain
about the marks out of 10 he had been getting in newspapers.

At times, it has all appeared somewhat churlish from a man who has generally been so feted throughout his football career.

On Monday, however, Owen was on much better form. Articulate and reasonable, he seemed in a much more amiable frame of mind as he continues to find his way gently at a club that could yet give him some immensely rewarding years.

Owen, 29, said: ‘I have never said I don’t feel appreciated. That’s not what I meant.

‘After the game at Barnsley someone said I had played well and scored a good goal. I just said that I don’t think it takes a goal for me to play well.

‘I thought I played much better the previous game at home to Bolton. I didn’t score and I missed a couple of chances. I thought I was average against Barnsley but I scored. But that’s how my career has gone, I guess.

‘If I don’t score then people say I haven’t played well, and if I score then people think I have played well.

His team can expect to face an under-strength United team. Sir Alex Ferguson’s squad has been hit by injuries to Nemanja Vidic, Rio Ferdinand, Ryan Giggs, Ji-sung Park and Dimitar Berbatov - and they have Sunday’s Premier League clash with leaders Chelsea at Stamford Bridge to think about.

Central defender Ferdinand continues to be troubled by a calf problem and Ferguson appeared to suggest the 30-year-old would not be ready for the London game.

‘I have no worries about Sunday in terms of Wes Brown and Jonny Evans,’ he said. ‘I have absolutely no worries.’

Having reacted tetchily last Friday when asked about Ferdinand’s poor form, Ferguson was asked about a suggestion from former England manager Graham Taylor over the weekend that the defender may be past his best.

‘In my time here, we’ve always had a situation where one of the star players hits a little blip and he is going to get criticism,’ said the United manager, altogether more reasonably.

‘That’s all part of being a player at Manchester United and I think we are all aware of that.

'With Rio, it’s quite simple. No player likes to be criticised. They liked to be loved and have arms around their shoulders at times, but he will come out of it, there is no question about that.

‘There is no discernible depreciation in his qualities, none for me at all. Playing with injuries is not the easiest thing to do, but of course we will try to get that right.’

MICHAEL OWEN believes Champions League football will be the key to unlocking the door to England again.

Owen, 29, has found himself sidelined by Fabio Capello due to his lack of first-team games.

But with his career revived at Manchester United, Owen believes he could be on the brink of a recall ahead of next summer's World Cup finals in South Africa.

Owen, expected to start against CSKA Moscow tonight, said: "Obviously one of the big draws of coming to United is you are going to be competing at the highest level.

"That's one of the first things you look at when you are asked to join this club.

"There are many reasons to join this club but one of the big ones is the thought of playing on big Champions League nights. It is every player's dream.

"I can influence my chances by playing well and playing in the Champions League has got to help.

"The last squad I was in was a year ago. It's something that other people talk about more than I think about.

"I've played for England 89 times and I would love to play for them again - that is the bottom line.

"But I don't go to bed thinking if I will play for England again. I think about playing well for Manchester United and the rest will take care of itself."

Owen became a legend with England fans from the moment he struck that wonder goal against Argentina in France 98.

Last summer his whole career was stalling as he left Newcastle United on a free transfer only for Alex Ferguson to come to the rescue.

Owen said: "I've loved every minute of it. It has been everything and more than I hoped it would be.

"From the canteen ladies right through the staff, I've been made welcome and I feel as if I've been here for years.

"Obviously I knew a lot of the players anyway so I wasn't too concerned about that but the fans seem to have taken to me."

His injury-time winner in the Manchester derby helped to win over any United sceptics.

But there are still question marks over his injury record, ones he believes he will dispel.

Owen said: "The club has a great structure behind the scenes that looks after the first-team players.

"If you want to do anything - extra weights, yoga, whatever - you can go into a room and there'll always be a member of staff there to help you.

"They will give a programme designed specifically for you.

"Because I have always been a quick type of player, I've always been prone to muscle-type injuries. So I continue to do extra work to hopefully reduce the danger of picking up those niggles.

"I've only had a couple of serious injuries in my career. The others have tended to be niggly injuries and they are the type you can manage.

"Experiences teaches you about your own body. In the last Champions League match here against Wolfsburg I came off early because I suspected that one more sprint and I might seriously damage my groin and be out for a month.

"I came off and was training again four days later."

United take on CSKA virtually assured of their passage into the next round after three wins. But Ferguson said: "We want to win and it should see us through as group winners."

United beat 1-0 CSKA in Moscow a fortnight ago but now Leonid Slutski is in temporary charge following the sacking of Juande Ramos.

Sir Alex Ferguson set Michael Owen a target of 15 goals in a Manchester United shirt this season.

Three months into the season, Owen is almost a third of the way there having struck four goals in 16 appearances. But a closer look at the stats adds a touch of polish to Owen’s strike-rate with the 29-year-old having started just six of his 16 outings.

Once again, as United lost for the third time in the league this season at Chelsea on Sunday, Owen was named as a substitute by Ferguson.

By the time he was called from the bench on 85 minutes, United were approaching desperation as they attempted to salvage at least a point. Owen barely had a sight of goal when he came on, but what else could be expected?

United’s defeat at Chelsea was undoubtedly a blow to their title hopes, but their performance was impressive and only wasteful finishing, and the absence of a strike-partner for Wayne Rooney, denied them a point or even three.

So why only give Owen five minutes at the end of the game?

After luring Owen to Old Trafford, Ferguson spoke of patiently building up his fitness following four injury-ravaged years on Tyneside. But Owen arrived in June, so he has now had five months to get himself back up to speed. In that time, he has suffered one minor injury setback, so if he is not ready now, he never will be.

Rooney was awesome in the lone striker role at Stamford Bridge, but the England forward works better when he has somebody to feed off and create chances for.

So what about Owen? Has the time now come for him to be given the Premier League opportunity that his patience and track record arguably deserve? One certainty is that he won’t score goals while sat on the bench. He has shown glimpses of his predatory instinct, so perhaps he should now be unleashed from the start of games.

After all, isn’t that what Manchester United are supposed to be about? Beating teams on the front foot and making opponents worry about their firepower? True, they do not, and cannot, carry the same threat without the unique talents of Cristiano Ronaldo.

But those pointing to the loss of Carlos Tevez as another factor behind United’s blunted edge miss the point that Owen’s record this season is better than the Argentine’s.

Tevez has scored four goals in 13 appearances for Manchester City, but while Owen has started six games for United, Tevez has been a substitute just once.

Two of his goals have come against the might of Crystal Palace and Scunthorpe in the Carling Cup. The other two against struggling West Ham. Owen has found the net against Wigan and City in the Premier League, CSKA Moscow in the Champions League and Barnsley in the Carling Cup.

And while Tevez cost City £25m plus huge wages, Owen is a free transfer whose salary is a fraction of the £110,000-a-week he picked up at Newcastle. Owen is a better bet than Tevez for United, but he needs to be on the pitch.

And with United now trailing Chelsea by five points, there is no better time for Ferguson to unwrap the cotton wool and allow Owen to chase down that 15-goal target.

Michael Owen has scored goals at the very highest level, played for some of the world’s biggest clubs and won the prestigious Ballon d’Or.

But the 29-year-old admits there’s still something missing from his glittering career: a Premier League winner’s medal.

“It’s something I think about a lot,” he told ManUtd.com.

Owen’s one of only a handful of current Reds who have failed to lift the famous trophy; the closest he’s come was when Liverpool finished second, seven points behind Arsenal, in 20001/02.

Winning the league is an ambition Owen’s held since the very beginning of his career and one he hopes he can fulfil during his time at Old Trafford.

“When I was first asked to sign for Manchester United I went to bed thinking about what it would feel like to join a new club and meet new staff and new players,” he said.

Owen berperan besar dalam mengerek MU ke posisi itu. Tak lain karena dua golnya, termasuk saat ia menciptakan gol krusial ketika derby Manchester melawan Manchester City. Gol itu membulatkan kemenangan Setan Merah 4-3 atas City.

"Hal utama buatku adalah kesempatan untuk memenangi gelar. Manchester United klub hebat dan saya senang bisa jadi bagian dari tim pemenang liga," jelasnya lagi.

Michael Owen is enjoying life at Manchester United and has claimed that he was always confident of success at his new club after leaving Newcastle United in the summer.

Owen points to his previous record as the reason for his confidence and feels that his career statistics show his quality, however they are interpreted.

"In my own mind I never doubted I’d score goals if I stayed fit and was given time on the pitch," he told United's official website.

"How can you fail to score goals in a team like this? You’re playing with such good players that it’s impossible not to get chances.

"In Madrid it was a similar story – I didn’t start every game but I ended up with the best goals-to-minutes ratio in the league.

"You can twist stats whichever way you want. A goal every one-and-a-half games sounds good, whereas four goals in 16 games isn’t quite so impressive. But they’re both accurate.

"At the end of the day, all I’m concerned about is playing and scoring as many times as I can.

"I’ve played in a team that was struggling and I much prefer life at a winning club, even if that means I don’t play every minute of every game.

"I’m here at a club that’s full of quality, training with top players every day and working under a top manager. I’ve had my fair share of starts and minutes on the pitch this season so I’m not about to complain."

Owen earned a place in the hearts of many Red Devils with his dramatic injury time winner against Manchester City earlier in the season. It was a strike he will certainly remember.

"That moment was really special," he explained. "When I retire and I’m thinking about the top five or six thrills I got out of football I’ll definitely think about my goal in the World Cup against Argentina and scoring two in an FA Cup final.

"But scoring that goal against City is right up there with those moments."

And the striker also reveals that Sir Alex Ferguson's side did not allow their recent defeat at Chelsea to dispirit them, and he predicts that United will surge up the Premier League table after Christmas.

When we lost at Liverpool it was a different story – we didn’t perform well at Anfield – but at Chelsea there’s no way on Earth we deserved to lose that game," he asserted.

"We walked away from Stamford Bridge with our heads held high and feeling pretty happy with the way we played. There were plenty of positives to take out of that performance.

"As an outsider for many years, the image I have of Manchester United is of a team that only really hits top gear around Christmas. I remember a lot of unbeaten runs in the latter part of seasons and, looking ahead at our fixtures, we’re aiming to embark on one of those now.

But Owen, 29, is delighted with the way his unexpected chance to shine at Old Trafford is going and points to the fact that his strike rate still takes some beating.

Gary Neville is far from happy that Manchester United’s Michael Owen™ has stolen his terraces song, Republik of Mancunia reports today. United supporters have, predictably adopted Neville’s “he hates Scousers” song in tribute to the former-Liverpool striker, who joined United in a free transfer deal this summer.

Hat-trick sinks Wolfsburg and gives Capello strong reminder

Michael Owen sent a powerful message to Fabio Capello last night as he scored the first hat-trick of his Manchester United career.

Owen starred in United’s 3-1 win away to Wolfsburg, which took Sir Alex Ferguson’s injury-ravaged team into the last 16 of the Champions League as group B winners.

His performance brought richly deserved plaudits from Ferguson, who described the forward as “fantastic”. The United manager also paid tribute to his makeshift team, who coped admirably without 15 senior members of the squad who were absent through injury, illness and ineligibility.

“You know what he [Owen] is — around that penalty box he is on the shoulder, making runs across defenders and his timing of runs is fantastic,” Ferguson said. “I’m really pleased for him.

“The system was experimental but the good thing was we had players with quality there and you have got to trust them. They are good at their jobs and they proved that again tonight.

“They have applied themselves and that’s important. Darren Fletcher [who played alongside Michael Carrick at centre half] plays all over the place and if you’ve got players like that, then adapting to a new system is never a big problem, but it’s always a concern.

“The advantage of being first in the group is that we will have the second leg at home [in the first knockout round] and it doesn’t matter who we play at Old Trafford, we always feel we have a chance there.

“Our record away from home has been fantastic but you take what you get and you’ve got to trust in the quality of your own players.”

It was the second Champions League hat-trick of Owen’s career — and his first of any kind since a treble for Newcastle United away to West Ham United four years ago — as he attempted to prove that he is still worthy of a place in Capello’s England squad for next year’s World Cup finals in South Africa.

United took the lead in the closing stages of the first half with a goal that came largely against the run of play, Owen scoring with a firm header from Nani’s cross.

Wolfsburg had enjoyed plenty of possession and it was little surprise when they equalised after 56 minutes, Edin Dzeko heading home from close range.

Owen may have had few chances to show his worth since moving to Old Trafford on a free transfer in the summer, but the goal threat that prompted Ferguson to sign him was once again evident when he struck for a second time to restore United’s lead, having been teed up by Gabriel Obertan, the United substitute.

The 29-year-old then scored his third of the night with a trademark run and finish to end the match as a contest and confirm United’s status as group winners.

LONDON, Dec 8 (Reuters) - Out-of-favour England striker Michael Owen wound back the clock with a superb treble to lead Manchester United to a 3-1 win over VfL Wolfsburg on Tuesday.

Owen, who turns 30 next week, has been fighting to regain his place in Fabio Capello’s side and his virtuoso performance will improve his chances of a recall ahead of next year’s World Cup finals in South Africa.

“I think a lot of people probably think I’m 35 already, but I’ve been saying lately ‘I’m still in my 20s’,” the former Liverpool and Real Madrid player told Sky Sports.

“I’ve scored a few hat-tricks in my time but it’s always nice to score them.”

The treble was Owen’s first since moving to United from Newcastle United in July, his last coming for Newcastle in 2005.

Yet the most memorable came in Munich, at the beginning of Sven-Goran Eriksson’s reign as England manager.

In Sept. 2001, Owen scored a scintillating treble to down Germany 5-1 in Munich, a country he clearly enjoys playing in.

Since his international debut in 1998, Owen has gone on to play 89 times for his country, scoring 40 goals.

Recently, however, due mainly to injury and being out of favour with current manager Fabio Capello, Owen hasn’t played for his country since March 2008.

His latest exploits are bound to add weight to the claim that he should travel to South Africa next year.

The striker himself said in September he was enjoying a new lease of life after his Old Trafford move, also making light of his injury woes by saying: “I am 100 percent the same player I was in Munich (2001).”

Sir Alex Ferguson said Michael Owen remains one of the world's most dangerous strikers after a hat-trick by his summer signing gave an injury-ravaged Manchester United an unlikely 3-1 Champions League win at Wolfsburg last night.

Owen has experienced a slow-burn beginning to his United career since arriving from Newcastle but his goals against the German champions afforded a defensively makeshift team a victory which ensured they finished top of their group.

"Michael Owen is one of the very best strikers around in terms of his positional play and finishing," said United's manager on an evening when the striker may have reignited his hopes of reviving his England career in South Africa next June.

With Wayne Rooney and Dimitar Berbatov sidelined by injury, Owen, overlooked by Fabio Capello, was afforded a rare start by his club. Asked if he had staked a claim to begin games on a more regular basis, Ferguson said: "Absolutely. The real evidence of ability is always found on the football field and Michael has given us plenty of that tonight.

"Michael has improved steadily in training since joining us but, in some games recently, we've chosen to play just one central striker. We had a different system featuring two strikers tonight, Michael's proved his worth in it and we're delighted."

Owen played down his display. "Me getting three goals will probably grab the headlines but it was a great team performance," he said. "I was playing deep with us having so many players out and we were trying to protect the [defence]."

Owen relieved the pressure on a back three comprising Darren Fletcher, Michael Carrick and Patrice Evra, the latter being Ferguson's sole fit recognised defender. "I was very pleased with the defence," said Ferguson. "Obviously changing the system was a risk but Wolfsburg's strikers, Edin Dzeko and Grafite are very imposing and I thought three centre-backs would give us a better than normal chance against them.

"There was pressure on Wolfsburg to get something and that meant we could be patient. They missed two good first-half opportunities from two headers and it would have been difficult for us if they'd taken the lead but we caught them on the counter-attack."

Ferguson has never been a 3-5-2 man but Carrick's performance in an unaccustomed sweeping role will have given him – and possibly even Capello – food for thought. Admittedly he was fortunate not to concede a penalty but, rather like Glenn Hoddle and Ruud Gullit, it is not impossible that the elegant midfielder could yet end his career reinvented as a libero.

If United rode their luck at times, fortune similarly smiled on their manager in terms of the medical bulletins from home. Ferguson confirmed there was good news from the treatment room before Saturday's Premier League game against Aston Villa. "[Nemanja] Vidic should be fit, Ryan Giggs will be fine and we expect Rooney to be back," said Ferguson. "I hope I can start with a back four of Fletcher, Vidic, Carrick and Evra."

Among the teams United could face are Bayern Munich, who won 3-1 at Juventus to finish second to Bordeaux in Group A, and Milan, runners-up to Real Madrid in Group C. "It's great being top so we play at home second," Owen said. "But I'm not going to lie, you want as weak a side as possible. [But] if a team has got to first or second in the Champions League, there are no weak sides, although you obviously want to avoid the big boys."

Wolfsburg finished third in the group but there were suggestions last night that second-placed CSKA Moscow could be thrown out of the Champions League after Uefa said two of their players, Sergei Ignashevich and Alexei Berezutsky, tested positive for a banned substance after the match at Old Trafford on 3 November.

The pair were suspended from last night's win at Besiktas and their case is due to be heard by a Uefa disciplinary committee on 17 December. CSKA said the pair had been the victims of a procedural error by the club's medical staff, who failed to inform Uefa they were on cold medicine. The drug taken had not been on a prohibited list but still needed to be disclosed.

'Can he have an impact from the start of games? Absolutely. The evidence is always on the football field and Michael has given plenty tonight.

'His training performances have improved steadily and I have never had a problem playing him.

'He is fantastic. You know what he is. He is in the penalty box, making runs across defenders . . . the timing of his runs is fantastic and I am really pleased for him.

'At times this season we have played with a central striker in Rooney and three midfielders, but we have played a different system with Owen and Danny Welbeck tonight and Michael has proved his worth.

'I am delighted with his performance.'

With midfielders Michael Carrick, Darren Fletcher and Ji-Sung Park playing in defence in Germany, United were on the back foot for much of the night but took the lead through an Owen header just before half-time and went on to score twice late in the game after Wolfsburg hit back through Edin Dzeko.

'There was some pressure on Wolfsburg to get a result and that suited us because we could afford to be patient,' added Ferguson.

'They missed two good, early opportunities with headers and that would have made it difficult for us.

'But they are a strong team and they have been unlucky when, going to win the game, they have been caught on the counter-attack twice.'

United received better news from home yesterday when Ferguson's staff told him that defender Nemanja Vidic will be fit for Saturday's Barclays Premier League game against Aston Villa at Old Trafford.

Predictably, strikers Wayne Rooney and Dimitar Berbatov will also be OK.

Ferguson added: 'Vidic we expect to be fit for Saturday. Rooney and Berbatov will both be fit.'
