OWEN HARGREAVES gave Manchester United and England a massive boost yesterday by playing his first game for 16 months.

The midfielder took part in a specially arranged practice match at United's Carrington training ground.

He has not played for the first team since the 1-1 draw against Chelsea on September 21, 2008.

There have been fears that Hargreaves might never recover from tendinitis in his knees.

But he lasted the full 90 minutes yesterday.

United boss Sir Alex Ferguson had claimed he would return to action last September, but there was never any chance of that.

Hargreaves' chronic knee condition is similar to that of tennis ace Rafa Nadal and has to be carefully managed if he is to make a first team comeback, which is still several weeks away.

Hargreaves' progress will be noted by England coach Fabio Capello, who has never been able to pick the midfielder.

The versatile Hargreaves was a star of the 2006 World Cup and Capello wants him at this summer's finals in South Africa.

Semoga dengan pulihnya cidera Owen Hargreaves, lini tengah MU kembali solid dan kuat. Kalau boleh jujur, sejak awal musim kompetisi ini digelar terlihat jelas bahwa lini tengah MU kurang maksimal. Kehadiran Hargreaves tentunya diharapkan dapat menjaga peluang MU untuk mempertahankan gelar Juara EPL serta merebut piala Champions UEFA. Welcome back, Hargo !

OWEN Hargreaves' injury hell with Manchester United is almost over.

Sir Alex Ferguson is preparing to *welcome his jinxed £18m midfielder back into his squad for the clash with AC Milan – and David Beckham.

The United boss hinted that the end of Hargreaves’ 16-month isolation is in sight, saying: “I would like to see him make the squad for the Champions League fixtures against AC Milan.”

Ferguson added: “But we won’t rush him. We are being patient.”

However, it seems United’s and Hargreaves’ patience is about to be rewarded.

The England midfielder has been playing behind-closed-doors matches in recent weeks in *preparation for the big moment when he declares himself ready for first-team action.

Hargreaves, plagued by tendinitis in his knees, played only three matches last season, the last in September 2008.

He had surgery on both of his knees in the USA last year, with the 29-year-old now working doggedly to re-establish himself at Old Trafford.

In truth, Hargreaves, signed from Bayern Munich in July 2007, has yet to get his United career off the ground, having made a mere 25 starts in two and a half years.

His problems began almost immediately, though he finished his first season in glory, scoring one of the penalties in the *Champions League final shoot-out *success against Chelsea in Moscow.

However, *Hargreaves is on the brink of being given the nod by Ferguson, who said: “Owen is alternating his training with the reserve and first-team squads, working for two days and then resting a day."

“It’s a matter of him regaining his *confidence and when he is able to train every day that will be the moment for him to return to match play.”

And an appearance against Milan and *ex-United idol Beckham in either of the *European matches, on February 16 and March 10, would be the perfect reward.

Ferguson, who said he has no regrets over the sale of Beckham to Real Madrid in 2003, revealed he had urged the superstar to boost his World Cup ambitions by *getting out of America, where he plays for LA Galaxy, and back into Europe.

Ferguson said: “I think I told him myself last year, when I saw him before our game against Inter, that he should be thinking about getting back to Europe if he wanted to go to the World Cup."

“And it looks like he might just get his wish now. He had a good spell with Milan last time, so it made sense to me to see him back there again.”

Fergie told ‘Inside United’, the club *magazine, his biggest concern about Becks’ return was the *media circus that would surround the 34-year-old star.

He said: “He’s such a high-profile celebrity – not just a high-profile *footballer. Our job is to *concentrate on the *football match and let the David Beckham *media circus carry on.”

Manchester - Owen Hargreaves kini belum 100% fit pasca menjalani operasi kedua lututnya. Tapi jika bisa pulih dengan cepat, Sir Alex Ferguson menjanjikan gelandangnya itu ikut menyambangi AC Milan.

Akibat mengalami cedera lutut parah, Hargreaves 'menghilang' dari skuad MU untuk jangka waktu yang sangat panjang. Tercatat, gelandang Inggris ini belum pernah merumput sejak September 2008.

Saat ini Hargreaves dilaporkan telah mengikuti latihan bersama timnya di Carrington, setelah kedua lututnya di operasi pada Desember 2008 dan Januari 2009.

Melihat kemajuan yang dibuat Hargreaves, Fergie berniat membawa pemain keturunan Kanada itu di laga kontra Milan, di babak 16 besar Liga Champions, 16 Februari mendatang. Tentunya itu bisa terealisasi asalkan sang pemain mampu mengembalikan kebugarannya lebih cepat.

"Saya ingin dia berada di skuad untuk pertandingan Liga Champions melawan AC Milan, tapi kami tidak ingin membuatnya terburu-buru."

"Kami sabar dengan rehabilitasi menyusul operasi kedua lututnya dan dia memilih latihan dengan tim reserve dan skuad inti, latihan selama dua hari lalu istirahat sehari," sahut Fergie di Mirror.

Akan tetapi Ferguson tidak ingin memaksakan Hargreaves untuk dapat segera turun. Manajer asal Skotlandia itu paham benar bahwa pemain sering dilanda krisis pede saat melakukan comeback pasca cedera panjang.

"Ini masalah untuk mendapatkan kembali kepercayaan dirinya dan ketika dia sudah siap untuk berlatih setiap hari, maka itu akan menjadi saat dia kembali bermain," pungkas Fergie.

Fergie casts serious doubt on Hargreaves' future

Alex Ferguson has raised serious doubts over the ability of Owen Hargreaves to return to top-level football this season by dropping the England midfielder from Manchester United's updated Champions League squad.

Ferguson, who named Hargreaves in United's squad for the group stages of the competition, had recently admitted his desire to involve the injury-ravaged 29-year-old in the last-16 tie against AC Milan this month.

But with the former Bayern Munich player now 16 months into a spell on the sidelines as a result of double knee surgery, Ferguson has effectively written Hargreaves out of his plans for the rest of the season by replacing him in his European squad with the Belgian defender Ritchie De Laet.

Uefa last night confirmed United had requested De Laet's elevation in place of Hargreaves. The Premier League champions have also named Senegalese forward Mame Biram Diouf in place of Danny Welbeck, who is on loan at Preston.

The omission of Hargreaves, who has not played a competitive fixture since September 2008, is a blow for English boss Fabio Capello, who had been prepared to hand the Canada-born player as much time as necessary to prove his fitness ahead of the World Cup.

Despite Hargreaves' latest setback, however, Capello is planning to meet him this month in an effort to gain the midfielder's perspective on his injury.

But with Ferguson deciding he cannot rely on Hargreaves against Europe's elite during the final three months of the season, there now appears to be no chance of him even being in contention for a late entry into Capello's 23-man squad.

Of more immediate concern for United and Hargreaves is when, or if, the £19m signing will overcome his injury problems sufficiently to play for the club again. On his arrival at Old Trafford in May 2007, Hargreaves signed a three-year contract with an option of a further 12 months. United have made no attempt to review the contract, with the club expecting Hargreaves to remain at United until June 2011.

With Hargreaves failing to make a comeback last August, and not even returning to the club from the Colorado base of surgeon Dr Richard Steadman until September, Ferguson then suggested that he would be able to call on his services for the final three Champions League group games.

Although Hargreaves emerged unscathed from a practice match last month, Ferguson has alluded to "confidence" issues preventing the player from taking the final step to competitive action.

Owen Hargreaves has been left out of Manchester United's Champions League squad.

The move almost certainly ends any chance the midfielder had of forcing his way into Fabio Capello's World Cup squad and raises fresh doubts over his chances of making a full recovery from double knee surgery in late 2008.

Last month, Sir Alex Ferguson did state his intention to pick Hargreaves in his 25-man European squad.

But UEFA have confirmed the former Bayern Munich star is not among the men United will rely on in their quest to reach a third successive final.

Plagued by a tendinitis problem since before his £18million move to Old Trafford in 2007, Hargreaves finally accepted the need for surgery last season.

He was closely monitored by renowned Colorado-based knee specialist Dr Richard Steadman until his return to United's Carrington training base in September.

At that point, Ferguson was hopeful Hargreaves would feature in the final two matches of the Champions League group phase.

Instead, potential comeback dates kept getting pushed back, with the Red Devils chief citing a lack of confidence from the player himself for a slower than expected recovery.

Ferguson's latest fitness bulletin about the Calgary-born star confirmed he was training with the first team for part of the week.

Still there has been no return to match action and the latest news - which rules him out of the knock-out round clash with AC Milan later this month - will only bring fresh doubt over Hargreaves' chances of rediscovering the form that saw him named England's player of the World Cup in Germany four years ago.

Sir Alex Ferguson is confident Owen Hargreaves will return to action this season despite leaving the midfielder out of his Champions League squad.

The boss opted to omit the 29-year-old from his 25-man squad for the latter stages of the competition knowing he would not be fit for the Reds’ last 16 tie with AC Milan.

“It would be nice to think we could get to the Champions League final and I could have Owen available. But we’re not in the final yet, we’ve got to beat AC Milan first and if I was to pick Owen then it would mean I'd have to leave another important player out and that player could be the one I need against Milan,” explained the Scot.

“The decision wasn’t about the latter part of the campaign, it was to do with the AC Milan game and Owen won’t be available for that. Sometimes you have to make hard decisions, but it's the correct one.”

Hargreaves had major knee surgery in November 2008 in a bid to cure a long-standing tendonitis problem and has been undergoing an extensive rehabilitation programme since. Sir Alex is convinced the England international will make a successful return this season and bolster the Reds’ bid for a fourth consecutive title.

“Owen’s recovery is slow. It's been a year and a half now and I can't put a time on it," admitted the boss. "But he will be back; he could come back and make an impact in the league and hopefully he will.

“There are more games in the league than there are in Europe and I don't need to register him for the league."

Owen Hargreaves is scheduled to make his long-awaited return next Thursday in the Reserves' Manchester derby.

The midfielder, who has endured two operations in an attempt to fix tendonitis problems in both knees, hasn't played since 21 September 2008.

Sir Alex has often commented on the 29-year-old England international's "good progress" in his rehabilitation during training, but this is the first time a date has been set to end an 18-month spell on the sidelines.

"Owen Hargreaves has shown for the first time this week that he’s almost ready to play," the manager told reporters at his Friday press conference.

"We’ve pencilled him in for a Reserves game next Thursday and he’s been training with the first team, which has been good to see."

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's second string team play Manchester City on Thursday 11 March at Moss Lane in Altrincham (kick-off 19:00).

Last week it was reported that the midfielder would make his long-awaited return from injury when Manchester City travelled to Altrincham's Moss Lane on 11 March.

But the game, a top-of-the-table league clash, doesn't tally with Hargreaves' precise rehabilitation schedule.

A club spokesperson told ManUtd.com: "This definitely isn't another injury setback. It just doesn't fit in with Owen's training schedule."

But while Hargreaves, who hasn't played since September 2008, won't feature, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is expected to name a strong team, despite the game coming just three days after the Reserves beat Stockport County 1-0 in the Manchester Senior Cup.

Thursday's game kicks off at Moss Lane, Altrincham, at 19:00. Entry is free for season ticket holders, £5 adults, £2 concs.

Manchester - Penantian panjang Owen Hargreaves untuk bisa merumput lagi akan segera terwujud. Gelandang Manchester United itu telah kembali latihan bersama skuad utama The Red Devils.

Tanda-tanda akan kepulihan Hargreaves telah terlihat sejak beberapa pekan lalu. Saat itu Hargreaves untuk kali pertama menjalani pertandingan meski cuma bersama tim reserve MU untuk menghadapi Burnley. Itu adalah pertandingan perdananya setelah menderita cedera lutut dan terpaksa absen sejak November 2008.

Melihat kemajuan berarti dari pemainnya, Sir Alex Ferguson memutuskan kalau pemain 29 tahun itu sudah layak untuk kembali ke skuad utama tim.

"Owen tidak akan bermain lagi untuk (tim) reserve," kata Ferguson kepada situs resmi MU yang dikutip Sky Sports. Dia akan kembali berlatih dengan tim utama dan kami akan melihat sejauh mana kemampuannya," sahut Fergie di Skysport.

"Kami ingin dia segera terlibat karena dia adalah pemain yang berpengalaman dan akan bermanfaat untuk kami dalam usaha perburuan gelar musim ini, dimana memiliki sebuah skuad yang kuat dan fit adalah sangat vital," lanjut pria Skotlandia itu.

Sementara itu, Hargreaves sendiri mengaku gembira dengan situasi ini. Pemain internasional Inggris tersebut mengaku sempat frustrasi akibat cedera yang dideritanya itu.

"Sepakbola adalah sebuah permainan fisik dan cedera adalah bagian dari itu. Tapi saya tidak pernah membayangkan saya mengalami cedera yang sangat mempengaruhi saya."

"Ini menjadi sebuah pengalaman yang buruk dan saya yakin banyak orang yang meragukan saya, tapi bagi orang-orang yang mengenal saya, tahu apa yang saya pikirkan dan saya mendapatkannya."
