Man United FC signs Catholic twins

Michael and William Keane have been signed by Manchester United
St Bede's Catholic College in Manchester is celebrating the double signing of two of its schoolboys, William and Michael Keane.
The twin brothers are aged 16 and have just signed contracts with Manchester United.
Steve Fallon, who is head of football at the college and a lifelong Manchester United fan, said: "The college is delighted that William and Michael have both signed contracts at United next year.
They will hopefully go on to equal or possibly excel the success of another former Bedian - the striker Neil Mellor, who signed for Liverpool in 1999 and broke into the first team in 2002 playing in the Premiership and UEFA Champions League."
Mr Mellor is now playing with Preston North End.
He rose to prominence in 2004 by scoring a noteworthy last-minute goal from long range to give Liverpool a 2-1 victory over Arsenal at Anfield. He also scored a vital goal and set up another during Liverpool's match with Olympiacos at Anfield during the group stage of the 2004-5 UEFA Champions League.
"Having coached both Neil and the twins," Mr Fallon added, "I think they definitely have the potential to become professional football players.
"As twins they have a unique talent in being able to read each others' moves, sometimes seeming able to control the outcome of a game just by themselves."

Keane twins hope to follow Neville brothers into Man Utd first team
William Keane featured for Manchester United U18 in their 1-0 win at Barnsley.
William and twin brother Michael both signed scholarship forms with United over the summer.
Following in the footsteps of the Neville brothers, Gary and Phil, the duo are avid United fans and have three-year contacts by the end of which they hope to have moved off the Old Trafford terraces and onto the pitch.
Michael is a defender, while William plays as an attacking midfielder and said: "It would have made it difficult if one had made it and the other had not. There’s nothing I’d rather do than be a professional footballer. I would love to be able to win the Premiership. When you train it’s great to see the United players like Rooney on the next pitch, they are all so good.
"Our parents were delighted as we got offered our new contracts just before our birthday, so we had a double celebration that weekend."

‘Star in the Making’ – Manchester United’s Will Keane
Keano! There’s only one Keano! There’s only one Keano!
I love Roy Keane (There I said it!). His attitude and the way he went about the game has earned him a place in my and countless other United fans’ hearts but it looks like that song is out dated as two more Keanes have joined United’s ranks.
Stockport born twins Will and Michael Keane signed schoolboy scholarships with the club last March and while Michael’s progress has been steady, Will has really turned it on this season.
Although he struggled at the start of season, Will soon found his feet and has been in a rich vein of goal scoring form since. He hit a hatrick against Man City’s academy side in a 3-0 win, ending a poor run of games against City (we had lost 6 of the last 8 games against them) then add another goal to his tally against Bolton two games later and then a brace against Liverpool the following game.
The frequency with which he has found the net has been a treat for all those involved with him and his style of play has drawn comparisons with reserve team manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer but even more so with Teddy Sheringham.
His 11 goals for the academy has seen him flirt with a place in Solskjaer’s reserve team but he hasn’t failed to impress when called upon by the Norwegian as he has scored in his last 2 appearances for the reserve side including a the winner against Stockport in a Manchester Senior cup tie and a cheeky back heel against Man City’s in a 2-2 draw.
He operates as a ’second striker’ linking play between the midfield and his partner (often John Cofie) as he holds up the ball and includes others into play. This is aided by his exceptional vision and passing but as you see, it doesn’t mean he does not like to get amongst the goals himself as he has a keen eye for goal and a predatory instinct inside the box.
As well as this, one thing Keane is often praised for his footballing intelligence and patience.
He signed a pro contract with the club in January and at just 17, could have a very bright future ahead of him. If he remains amongst the goals as he has been this season his progression through to the reserves and then the first team could pass quicker than expected.

Probably the greatest day of William Keane's United career so far was capped on Tuesday night when he received the Jimmy Murphy Young Player of the Year award.
Hours earlier, the Stockport-born striker scored as the Under-18s clinched the regional championship by beating Everton 2-0. Now a national play-off semi-final against Arsenal beckons for Keane and co, as his debut season as an academy scholar reaches an exciting climax.
The team's proud coach Paul McGuinness told MUTV, "Will has been such a smooth operator in his first year. He's been really outstanding and has scored some stunning goals but his general team play and his demeanour, his attitude on and off the pitch, have been excellent."
Will was presented with his trophy by the academy manager, and appropriately a former United striker, Brian McClair. Congratulations to Will and the other nominees, Nicky Ajose and Scott Wootton.

Despite preparing for a World Cup campaign that begins in just 15 days, England boss Fabio Capello has still found the time to plan for the future.
And in scouring the country for the next crop of World Cup stars, the Italian has cast a glance in the direction of Manchester.
Capello personally requested a DVD of England's opening game at the UEFA Under-17 Championships to watch during World Cup preparations at their training base in Irdning, Austria – a game that featured United stars Sam Johnstone, Tom Thorpe and Will Keane.
Keane, from Stockport, has enjoyed a meteoric rise in the last 12 months that has seen him break into the reserve team at Old Trafford just a year after leaving St Bede’s College to join United's academy.
And the 17-year-old striker has followed in the footsteps of United greats like Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes by collecting the Young Player of the Year award.
Head of football at St Bede’s College, Steve Fallon, said: “Will has had a fantastic year at United and everyone at the college is delighted to see him making such excellent progress.
“I have been tracking his progress and I have seen him score some stunning goals.
“As a lifelong United fan I cannot wait to see him in the first team.”
Proud dad Aidan said: “We are absolutely thrilled that Will won the Young Player of the Year award.
“He was nominated alongside two other second year academy players so to win the award at such a young age was a major achievement.”
After scoring 13 goals for United’s academy and two for the reserves this season, Keane started England’s wins over the Czech Republic and Greece at the European Championships in Liechtenstein.
He was am unused substitute as England clinched a semi-final spot with a 2-1 win over Turkey on Monday.
They take on France tonight for a place in the final, where Keane will come up against another United starlet – the highly-rated midfielder Paul Pogba.

United youngster Keane for success
MEN, Robert Dawson - June 07, 2010
Will Keane is only 12 months into his professional football career – but he’s already caught the attention of top managers Sir Alex Ferguson and Fabio Capello.
The 17-year-old striker left St Bede’s College last summer to begin a two-year apprenticeship with Manchester United.
A year later, and the Reds’ young player of the year award and an Under-17 European Championship winner’s medal are safely locked away in Keane’s trophy cabinet.
It’s not a bad start to a blossoming football career.
“My first year couldn’t have gone much better,” said Stockport-born Keane.
“We won the Milk Cup and the reserve play-off final with United and the European Championships with England.
“On a personal level I won the young player award as well which was great.
“I thought I was in with a chance but all the other players who were nominated had great seasons as well so it was still a bit of a surprise.
“It doesn’t really sink in until you look at the other names on the trophy like Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes and Wes Brown.”
And lifting the Jimmy Murphy Young Player of the Year award – named after the man credited with unearthing the Busby Babes – isn’t the only way Keane has followed in famous footsteps this season.
When England came from behind to beat Spain 2-1 in the Under-17 European Championship final in Liechtenstein on May 31, it earned the three lions their first title for 17 years.
That triumph – at the Under-18 European Championships in 1993 – featured Scholes, Gary Neville and Nicky Butt, and Keane is determined that his career will continue to follow a similar path.
“It is the first youth trophy England have won for a while and that was something we spoke about before the game,” said Keane.
“The players who won that trophy have gone on and had great careers so hopefully we can do the same.
Rooney inspiration
“Before the game we got good luck messages from Wayne Rooney and Steven Gerrard and it really inspired the players. It was nice that they took the time to wish us luck and you almost want to win the game for the them.
“We even had the entire Spain first team watching the game.
“It was great to win it against some of the best teams in the world,” he added.
“We beat France and Spain who produce some very good players so to beat those teams and win the trophy was a great achievement. Spain and France had some great players and they were both tough matches.”
So impressive were England’s performances that Fabio Capello requested DVDs of the games to watch during his World Cup preparations.
Sir Alex Ferguson is also keeping a close eye on his young star and Keane is confident his fledging career is in safe hands at the club he joined as an 11-year-old.
“Sir Alex came over to say well done at the player of the year awards which was nice,” said Keane, whose twin brother Michael is also on United’s books.
“We see quite a lot of him around the training ground and he always stops to say hello and ask how we are doing. It’s one of the reasons United is such a great to club to learn at.
“The first-team players are always nice too,” he added.
“It’s the best place to learn because, as a centre forward, you get to learn from the likes of Wayne Rooney and Dimitar Berbatov.
“They’re some of the best players in the world and it can only help being around them and watching what they do.”
Keane is hoping to get a closer look at his senior United colleagues next season by getting the chance to line up alongside them. He says he’s got the perfect blueprint to follow in Italian centre forward Federico Macheda, who made a timely impact as the Reds chased their third straight title in 2009.
“I’m hoping to progress next year and get a regular place in the reserve team and maybe even get a call into the first-team squad,” added Keane.
