Giggs: We need Derby pride

RECENT history is in United's favour for next week's Carling Cup derby shoot-out at Old Trafford.

Last season, after losing last January at Pride Park against Derby County in the Carling Cup semi first leg, United overturned the Championship side's advantage to win the return 4-2.

But United's scorer at Eastlands says the Reds must rediscover a killer touch.

"I hope the second leg is similar to last season's against Derby County because we beat Derby comprehensively," he said.

"We hope we can do that again but obviously this is going to be tough. City are a good team. However, there were enough signs there late on for us that we can beat them.

"We created plenty of chances but didn't have that stroke of luck or composure with our finishing. Hopefully, we will have that in the second leg.

"We created enough opportunities and if that pattern continues in the second game we must put the chances away this time."

Forty years ago City had a similar 2-1 home advantage going into the League Cup semi-final second leg at Old Trafford.

Wembley

The Blues' lead in December 1969 was the platform for a return that saw them draw 2-2 at the Reds' HQ and progress to Wembley.

And although Giggs scored a 17th minute opener on Tuesday, he was left to rue a performance that has given the Blues hope.

"It was a perfect start. Going 1-0 ahead away from home is what you want to do in a semi-final," added the 36-year-old.

"After that we weren't as crisp with our passing. We kept going back and let City back into it really.

"They got the penalty which you could argue was dubious, but there is nothing we can do about it now. We felt we were maybe a little bit unlucky to go in 1-1 but we knew we could have played better.

"The penalty was a turning point. I think if we had gone in 1-0 at half-time it would have been a different story.

"Sometimes you get decisions sometimes you don't and you just have to get on with it. We came out second half and they scored from a set piece which is always disappointing. After that we played really well and deserved an equaliser."

PATRICE Evra is one of only two Premier League players named in uefa.com's team of the year for 2009.

The Reds defender is joined by Chelsea skipper John Terry in the line up with Cristiano Ronaldo also included.

MANCHESTER, KOMPAS.com - Pelatih Manchester United, Alex Ferguson, menilai, penyerang Manchester City, Carlos Tevez seharusnya mendapat kartu merah atas pelanggarannya kepada bek MU, Wes Brown, saat kedua kubu berduel di leg pertama semifinal Piala Carling, Selasa (19/1/2010).

Pelanggaran itu terjadi di pertengahan babak pertama. Saat itu, Tevez mengganjal lutut Brown saat keduanya berebut bola. Menurut Ferguson, Tevez pantas mendapat kartu merah dan dengan begitu absen di leg kedua, Kamis (28/1/2010). Meski begitu, Ferguson menolak membawa membawa masalah ini secara formal kepada Federasi Sepak Bola Inggris (FA).

FA sendiri menyadari panasnya persaingan kedua kubu. Karenanya, sebelum leg kedua nanti, FA ingin mempertemukan kedua kubu untuk menengahi perselisihan dan mengingatkan kedua kubu untuk menjunjung fairplay dan sportivitas, di atas persaingan dan konflik pribadi atau klub.

Rencana itu ditanggapi dingin oleh Ferguson. Menurutnya, FA bukanlah lembaga yang berwenang mengurusi persaingan antarklub. Ia menyarankan FA untuk fokus saja kepada urusan mereka sendiri.

"Siapa yang akan mengingatkan mereka (FA)? Apakah ini masuk wilayah kerja FA? Ini Piala Liga. Setelah ini apalagi (yang akan FA lakukan)?" tandas Ferguson.

Extra police for Manchester derby clash

Police are planning to step up security amid fears trouble could erupt at the forthcoming derby match between Manchester United and Manchester City.

The teams are due to meet on Wednesday for the semi-final second leg of the Carling Cup at Old Trafford.

An extra 75 officers will be on duty and spot checks will be made at pubs near the ground.

Police made 18 arrests at last week's match and expect to make more after viewing video cameras.

Ian Hopkins, Assistant Chief Constable of Greater Manchester Police, revealed talks would take place on Monday with United and City officials and the Football Association in a bid to prevent any trouble.

He said he would also be reminding the players they had a responsibility not to provoke trouble.

Speaking on BBC Radio 5Live's Sportsweek programme, he added: "I will be meeting with both the clubs again along with the FA tomorrow to discuss the general crowd behaviour and making sure that they understand their responsibility not to do anything that's likely to incite the crowd.

'Really passionate'

"We will be making the points very strongly that the players are professionals, they need to recognise the impact they can have on the crowd and it's going to be really passionate again on Wednesday.

"There's a lot at stake for both teams and for the fans."

The first leg, which City won 2-1, saw Tevez and United substitute Gary Neville exchange gestures.

Both players were warned about their future conduct by the Football Association.

Keanos Big Match Preview / Manchester City (H)

I’m looking forward to this game so much now as it really is all to play for after last weeks clash at the City of Manchester Stadium where we were basically robbed after Mike Dean gave an insane penalty to the homeside. The fans ought to be pumped for this derby and the atmosphere at Old Trafford on Wednesday night should be fantastic, a taste of what to expect for the visit of Milan in a few weeks perhaps? All we know for sure is that at 10.30 on Wednesday, we’ll know who will be packing their bags for Wembley and preparing for a Carling Cup final against Aston Villa.

Last Time Out

Hull City posed a small threat at Old Trafford and with 10 minutes to go were looking set for a credible 1-0 defeat. They had some rare threatening attacks which could have yielded equalisers throughout the game, but scorer of the first goal, Wayne Rooney managed to find the net three more times incredibly meaning he added his name to a list of players who have scored four times in one game for Manchester United. A small list with some big names. Rooney’s four goals made the game look extremely comfortable but it perhaps flattered us slightly. But at the end of the day its three more points added to our League tally and we won’t complain about. No major refereeing decisions, no bust ups, no injuries, no suspensions, no media madness…just what we needed after some horrific decisions against us of late. The back five is boosted by the return of Rio Ferdinand and it really picks itself. The only place I’d be uncertain over would be the right back slot which could be filled by either Rafael or Brown, I’ve gone for the latter here.

In the middle of the park, Anderson and Carrick did well against City I thought are deserving of another run out against Mancini’s men. They’re both good passers and very good tacklers, two important qualities needed for this game I feel. Valencia is virtually unchallenged for the right wing position here and on the left I’d be inclined to give Nani a start after his performance at the weekend. Having said that, he’s on his way out of the club this summer I think.

Ferguson said he wouldn’t pair the two, but I don’t understand why Rooney and Owen can’t play alongside each other. Both had great chances late on at City last week and if they start you just know that there will be goals. Diouf could well start ahead of Rooney mind you leaving the Englishman on the bench but it would be a risky move.

Key Devil

Rooney is in red hot form here. Its been a fantastic season for him and he’s really stood out as a leader in the absence of Cristiano Ronaldo. Hopefully he hasn’t dried up his scoring after netting four last time out! I’d just love it if he showed the City fans where to go! If he plays from the start, he’ll score. There’s a quick punt for you. I know I’ll be putting a fiver on Rooney to score at any time – 4/1

The Opposition

City had one game between the two semi-final games and it was a 4-2 win in the FA Cup over S****horp United. They’ve been in decent form other then that with not much else to report considering its been only one week since we last played them. Tevez will be in need of some special attention because we don’t want him taunting the fans at Old Trafford.

Well, we’ve only met five times in this competition thus far. Manchester - Manchester United maju ke partai puncak Piala Carling setelah menjinakkan Manchester City di leg kedua semifinal yang berakhir 3-1. 'Setan Merah' lolos dengan agregat 4-3.

MU baru bisa menjebol gawang City pada babak kedua. Gol pertama 'Setan Merah' di Old Trafford, Kamis (28/1/2010) dinihari WIB, dicetak oleh Paul Scholes pada menit 52, sebelum kemudian Michael Carrick menggandakan di menit ke-52.

Carlos Tevez, yang bikin dua gol dalam kemenangan 2-1 untuk City di leg pertama, sempat meniupkan asa untuk timnya lewat gol pada menit 76 yang bikin agregat jadi sama kuat 3-3. Namun, Wayne Rooney akhirnya memastikan tiket final untuk MU lewat golnya pada menit-menit akhir.

Di partai puncak, MU sudah dinanti Aston Villa yang telah lolos terlebih dulu. Final akan dihelat di Wembley pada 28 Februari 2010 mendatang.

Jalannya Pertandingan

Carlos Tevez mulai menebar ancaman ke gawang MU pada menit 23. Dia berusaha merangsek menembus pertahanan MU dengan kawalan ketat dari Jonny Evans dan Rio Ferdinand yang akhirnya mampu meredam Tevez yang terjatuh.

Enam menit kemudian, Craig Bellamy meneruskan operan Javier Garrido dengan umpan silang ke arah tiang jauh. Di sana Tevez menyambut dengan tandukan yang masih bisa ditepis kiper Edwin van der Sar.

MU membalas pada menit 32. Michael Carrick mengirimkan bola ke arah Ryan Giggs yang kemudian mendapat peluang meski Shay Given masih berhasil mengandaskannya.

Tekanan masih dilancarkan MU semenit berselang. Carrick kali ini mengirim bola Wayne Rooney yang membentur tembok pemain City. Upaya kedua dari kombinasi yang sama kemudian juga masih bisa dihentikan Given.

Dua menit memasuki babak kedua, Micah Richards melakukan overlap dari sisi kanan. Tak ada rekan yang bisa membantu, dia melepaskan sepakan kaki keras kaki kiri meski masih ada Van der Sar untuk menahan.

MU akhirnya memimpin pada menit 52. Setelah bola berpindah-pindah kaki dan sempat dihalau Given, si kulit bundar akhirnya dikuasai Paul Scholes yang lantas melepas tendangan menyusur tanah. Tampak sedikit membentur pemain lain, bola tak terhenti untuk bersarang dalam gawang City.

Peluang emas untuk MU hadir lagi di menit ke-61. Sebuah umpan panjang bisa diterima Nani dengan baik dan kemudian diteruskan ke arah Rooney. Kans untuk bikin gol buat Rooney sangat terbuka meski Dedryck Boyata berhasil menekel bola untuk menghasilkan sepak pojok belaka.

Enam menit kemudian, City memeragakan kerjasama tim apik. Bola berpindah dari Tevez ke Gareth Barry lantas ke Craig Bellamy yang menanduk bola untuk diteruskan dengan tendangan Richards. Namun, bola membentur tembok MU dan hanya berbuah sepakan pojok.

MU tampaknya sudah benar-benar mengunci tiket ke final setelah bikin gol kedua pada menit 71. Lemparan ke dalam diambil pendek untuk diterima Nani dan kemudian dioper ke arah Darren Fletcher. Bola lantas bisa dikuasai Carrick yang dengan tenang mengecoh Given untuk bikin skor 2-0.

City belum mau menyerah begitu saja. Hanya lima menit usai MU bikin gol kedua, City memperkecil ketinggalan lewat Tevez. Umpan silang dari Bellamy dimanfaatkan dengan apik oleh Tevez yang lolos dari kawalan Ferdinand. Agregat kini sama kuat 3-3.

Saat pertandingan tampak akan memasuki babak tambahan, MU menggebrak. Dari sepak pojok yang diambil Giggs, bola dioper pendek ke arah Antonio Valencia yang dihadang Tevez. Bola kembali ke Giggs yang lantas melepaskan umpan silang yang langsung disambut tandukan Rooney.

"Saya rasa suporter kami luar biasa malam ini," katanya kepada MUTV. "Ketika Old Trafford seperti itu, pemain benar-benar meresponsnya. Saya harus menyampaikan penghargaan khusus kepada mereka."

Manchester - Manajer Manchester United Sir Alex Ferguson memberi kredit khusus buat fans 'Setan Merah'. Mereka disebut Fergie sudah urun peran dalam membakar semangat para pemainnya guna melaju ke final Piala Carling.

MU memasuki laga semifinal leg kedua Piala Carling dengan tertinggal 1-2 setelah pada pertemuan pertama tunduk di markas City. Untuk bisa lolos, sebelum pertandingan Fergie pun minta bantuan dari para fans MU untuk "membakar" Old Trafford dengan dukungan.

Fans MU menjawabnya dengan dukungan luar biasa dalam pertandingan, Kamis (28/1/2010) dinihari WIB, yang dimenangi Wayne Rooney cs dengan skor 3-1. Alhasil, MU memastikan lolos ke final dengan agregat 4-3.

"Saya pikir malam ini fans kami luar biasa," decak Fergie di situs MU.

"Saat Old Trafford seperti itu, para pemain benar-benar meresponnya. Mereka menuntun kami. Saya harus memberikan penghargaan spesial untuk mereka. Mereka luar biasa," lanjut Fergie.

Dukungan dari fans setia MU yang memadati Theatre of Dreams memang terus mengalir untuk tim tuan rumah. Ini ikut memberi suntikan moral untuk pemain MU yang akhirnya bisa mulai menjebol gawang City di paruh kedua dan berjuang sampai akhir sampai kemudian Rooney bikin gol penentu.

"Kami kehilangan banyak peluang di dalam pertandingan dan Edwin van der Sar membuat sebuah penyelamatan gemilang setelah jeda. Tapi penampilan kami di babak kedua sangat hebat. Kami bisa saja bikin enam atau tujuh gol dan tetap mengendalikan permainan," tandas Fergie.

Sir Alex Ferguson hailed Wayne Rooney as ‘world class’ last night after the striker’s late goal sent Manchester United to Wembley and left bitter rivals City heartbroken.

A pulsating Carling Cup semi-final was heading for extra-time when Rooney struck in the 92nd minute to give United a 4-3 aggregate win and earn Ferguson a record seventh final against Aston Villa next month.

But United could face FA sanctions after City’s Craig Bellamy was felled by a coin thrown from the stands in the second half as he prepared to take a corner. A full bottle of cider narrowly missed him moments later.

Referee Howard Webb was forced to hold up the game while extra security reinforced that corner of the ground as the tie threatened a repeat of the chaos that marred last week’s first leg.

Ferguson said: ‘Rooney’s control, penetration, leading of the line, everything was terrific. That was a true world-class performance.

‘I thought he was much better than he was on Saturday when he scored four goals against Hull.

‘I’m delighted for our fans, too. Our support was unbelievable and when they are like that, you never want to let them down. The fact that it was a semi-final added a lot of spice, and the fact that we scored so late brought a special type of celebration. The first half was a bit cat and mouse because they sat deep, but we kept our patience, which was important.

‘What we said at half-time was to keep playing our football and to keep passing the ball around. In fairness to our players, in the second half they were fantastic. Darren Fletcher was immense. He played like he had two engines in him.’

Mancini said: ‘It hurts but we have another cup. We had a big chance to reach the final but hopefully we can win the FA Cup final.

‘I’m sorry for the players and supporters. But it’s important the players go away with their heads held high. There were 10 minutes when United had a lot of pressure and scored two goals. But we played well to the end.

‘I only complimented my players in the dressing-room. And compliments to United as well because they won. Rooney is a fantastic player, a top player.’

Scholes gave United the lead seven minutes into the second half, driving a shot into the bottom corner from 15 yards after the ball was touched back to him by Carrick.

Carrick scored a similar goal into the same corner to put United 2-0 ahead in the 71st minute as he took a pass from Fletcher and stroked the ball beyond Shay Given. But City hit back out of the blue five minutes later, Tevez playing the ball wide to Craig Bellamy and then getting in ahead of Rio

Rooney’s goal made up for an awful miss earlier in the second half that could have killed the game off. He said: ‘We were deserved winners. We started well then went a bit slow but when we were at them, they didn’t know what to do — they couldn’t get out.

‘I wasn’t worried after the miss. Maybe I should have done better, especially with the delivery. But thankfully I took the chance when it came.’

Fletcher added: ‘It was all about the team tonight. Not one player put in an average performance and everyone was up for it. We dominated the second half and were so on top. City’s goal came out of nothing.

When Carlos scored it took the steam out of us for a few minutes. But this was a win over our local rivals and you can hear how much it means to our fans after everything that went on in the first leg.’

Ferdinand played last night after pleading not guilty to an FA charge of violent conduct over his clash with Hull striker Craig Fagan on Saturday.

It means the United defender could receive a heavier punishment than a three-game ban if he is found guilty by a disciplinary commission today.

Manchester United face a Football Association disciplinary inquiry after the Manchester City striker Craig Bellamy was struck on the back of the head by a coin and had several other missiles aimed at him.

Among the other objects hurled from a section of Manchester United supporters were three beer bottles containing liquid. They narrowly avoided striking him.

Bellamy was hit when he retrieved the ball for a corner early in the second half and the impact caused him to fall to the floor holding the back of his head.

The Manchester United goalkeeper, Edwin van der Sar, picked up a bottle and appeared to call for restraint from the home fans in the area from where the missiles were thrown.

The referee, Howard Webb, asked for extra security to be brought to that part of the stadium. He was handed a coin by the City midfielder Gareth Barry.

United could be sanctioned by the FA for the behaviour of their fans, which came despite calls for calm in the build-up from the FA and Greater Manchester police.

A spokesperson for United said: "Our security thinks they [the perpetrators] were identified and arrested." They can expect to be banned from Old Trafford for life.

Manchester City's manager, Roberto Mancini, said he was too far away from the incident to see what happened.
