Manchester - Nani tak mau buru-buru memikirkan laga final Liga Champions melawan Barcelona. Dia meminta Manchester United untuk berkonsentrasi penuh menjelang laga penentuan kontra Chelsea akhir pekan ini.

MU akan meladeni Barca di final Liga Champions pada 28 Mei mendatang. Ini adalah kesempatan bagi mereka untuk melakukan revans atas kekalahan di final dua tahun lalu.

Karena duel lawan Barca baru akan digelar sekitar tiga pekan lagi, Nani meminta timnya untuk sejenak "melupakan" laga tersebut. Pasalnya, akhir pekan ini mereka akan menghadapi laga maha penting di Premier League, yakni menjamu Chelsea di Old Trafford. Menang akan mendekatkan 'Setan Merah' ke titel juara, sementara kekalahan akan membuat mereka kehilangan puncak klasemen.

"Pertandingan terpenting saat ini adalah Chelsea, bukan Barcelona," cetus Nani di SkySports.

"Itu akan sangat sulit. Tapi kami bermain di kandang dan kami punya pengalaman yang bagus melawan mereka," tambah winger asal Portugal ini.

"Kami tahu, kalau kami ingin menang, kami harus bermain dengan kepercayaan diri. Hasil melawan mereka di Liga Champions sangat bagus. Saya pikir itu memberi kami keuntungan secara psikologis," ujarnya.

"Kami cuma harus berkonsentrasi pada permainan kami dan memenangi pertandingan. Kalau kami melakukannya maka semua akan baik-baik saja," imbuh bekas pemain Sporting Lisbon ini.

"Kalau kami memenanginya, itu akan jadi keuntungan besar buat kami. Itu (perebutan titel) hampir selesai. Kami punya kesempatan yang bagus," tandasnya.

MANCHESTER – Winger Luis Nani menyatakan komitmennya kepada Manchester United, di tengah maraknya rumor kepergiannya dari Old Trafford.

United dikabarkan akan mengalami surplus pemain setelah Sir Alex Ferguson menyatakan niatnya memboyong pemain Aston Villa, Ashley Young. Kehadiran Young diprediksi membuat Nani tersingkir dan kemungkinan terburuk adalah Setan Merah akan melelangnya pada bursa transfer musim panas.

Namun, Nani tak tertarik meninggalkan klub yang sudah dibelanya sejak 2007 lalu. Winger Timnas Portugal mengakhiri spekulasi masa depannya melalui pernyataannya kepada surat kabar A BOLA yang dikutip Goal, Sabtu (11/6/2011) “Saya bahagia di Manchester United”.

Sebelumnya, Nani dikait-kaitkan dengan Inter Milan. The Red Devils kabarnya ingin memasukkan Nani sebagai salah satu pemulus transfer Wesley Sneijder.

Namun, gelandang Belanda sendiri baru saja memastikan masa depannya untuk tetap bertahan bersama La Beneamata. Selain Inter, Juventus juga dikabarkan menjadi peminat servis pemain 24 tahun ini. Bianconeri bahkan sudah memberikan tawaran sebesar 13 juta euro demi merekrut Nani.

Nani jadi destroyer pertahanan lawan klo maen jadi winger kanan, tapi klo jadi winger kiri dia jadi "destroyer" serangan United sendiri :hammer: ......... :P

Nani nggak masalah bertahan, hanya syaratnya dia musti mau jadi cadangan. Kanan rasanya hampir pasti jadi milik Vale, kiri masih bisa diperjuangkan ma Nani tapi ya rasanya lebih sreg Young. Apalagi musim lalu Nani terpinggirkan dari starting kanan oleh Vale dan bahkan dari sisi kiri oleh Park untuk laga ketat, jadi buat musim depan makin banyak halangannya.

Nggak masalah dia bertahan, hanya musti mau jadi korban rotasi. Tapi faktor inkonsistensi dia bener2 jadi pengurang prestasi positif dia musim lalu.

Sempat bermain bagus di paruh pertama musim lalu, Luis Nani menunjukkan grafik kontribusi cenderung menurun di pekan-pekan terakhir kompetisi untuk Manchester United.

Diakui pemain asal Portugal itu jika kondisi fisiknya di akhir musim tidak sesuai harap dan mengecewakan dirinya sendiri.

"Musim lalu saya bermain lebih banyak di banding musim-musim sebelumnya, mungkin karena itulah di laga terakhir saya tak tampil seperti apa yang terlihat di pekan-pekan pertama," jelas Nani.

"Sekarang, saya akan mengambil masa liburan untuk istirahat, mengembalikan lagi tenaga saya. Di awal musim saya akan bisa kembali bagus dan kuat lagi, mulai melakukan apa yang saya tahu pasti," tandasnya.

Nani Punya Masa Depan Di Manchester United

Sir Alex Ferguson menjawab spekulasi masa depan Luis Nani di Manchester United. Ditegaskannya, gelandang asal Portugal itu masih akan menjadi andalan timnya musim depan.

Diungkapkan Ferguson, Nani masuk dalam rencana tim untuk musim depan dalam sejumlah strategi yang dimilikinya.

"Nani bermain bagus di musim lalu secara keseluruhan, tapi Antonio Valencia kembali bermain dan penampilannya juga bagus dan sulit menjauhkannya dari tim," kata Ferguson, Sabtu (23/7).

"Nani adalah pemain yang bagus, kepribadiannya meningkat. Kami akan bersaing musim depan dan akan banyak memainkan banyak pertandingan."

Nani has claimed he will be inspired by the intense battle for first-team spots at Manchester United this season.

The arrival of Ashley Young from Aston Villa has provided immediate competition for the winger, who with Antonio Valencia sidelined for most of last term, was the only orthodox wide-man at Sir Alex Ferguson's disposal.

Danny Welbeck has operated on the flanks and is now available after a successful loan spell at Sunderland, whilst Mame Biram Diouf was picked there for the first half of the 3-1 win over Chicago Fire.

However, Nani, who scored the visitors' final goal at Soldier Field, is adamant he does not intend to take a backward step.

'The competition is good,' he said. 'It inspires you. If you have competition, you will train harder and push yourself in every game. At Manchester United, you have to be ready every time you go on the field.'

The 24-year-old contributed nine goals and 18 assists - the highest in the league - to United's record 19th championship triumph. Yet it still was not enough to earn him a starting spot for the Champions League final defeat to Barcelona in May.

It must have come as a bitter blow to a player who started the campaign so well, but tailed off just as Valencia was recovering from the broken ankle he sustained in September.

UNITED ace driven by despair NANI has vowed to take his game to another level and make sure he will never be ignored by Sir Alex Ferguson again.

The Portuguese winger was devastated after being left out of the Manchester United starting line-up for last season’s Champions League Final.


He made an appearance as a late substitute in May’s 3-1 defeat by Barcelona but it meant nothing to him as Pep Guardiola’s men cruised to a crushing win.

But the painful memory has clearly proved a blessing in disguise for Nani if his performance against Guardiola’s men in Washington was anything to go by.

Fergie won’t be getting carried away by Saturday’s win at FedEx Field, not least because there was little at stake and Barca appeared to be going through the motions.

But Nani looked determined to prove a point and took his chance with both hands to leave Fergie with some serious thinking to do ahead of the new season.

Ashley Young has arrived at Old Trafford from Aston Villa in an £18m deal while Antonio Valencia surged ahead of Nani in the pecking order last season.

Valencia, who is set to sign a new and improved deal, was picked for the games that mattered most but Nani has impressed from start to finish in the United States and feels his stock has never been higher.

The win, secured by Michael Owen’s second-half strike, represented personal redemption for Nani.

He knows he will have to keep his game at the highest level if he is to keep his place in Fergie’s side but is ready for the challenge.

He said: “It’s a different game, but I’m obviously very happy because I did well and the team is playing very goodfootball in pre-season.

“Our fitness is getting better and it’s good to feel this way.

“I am always very confident. I didn’t lose my place to (Antonio) Valencia. The last two or three games the manager made his decisions and, of course, you have to respect this.

“But now I am feeling confident for the new season and I hope to do my best and help the team win trophies.

Penampilan gemilang Luis Nani melalui dua golnya memang telah memesona sang nahkoda. Fergie pun tak mampu menyembunyikan kekagumannya. Lantas, ia menjamin ada satu tempat untuk Nani pada laga perdana United dimusim 2011/12.

Persaingan guna mendapat tempat di skuad XI Manchester United memang sempat diakui Nani sangatlah berat. Namun, Nani tak membuat hal tersebut menjadi sebuah tekanan. Ia justru akan membuat persaingan tersebut menjadi sebuah motivasi besar untuk melakoni setiap laga dengan tampil baik.

Tak ingin hanya berucap, Nani pun membuktikannya. Pentas Community Shield 2011, Minggu (7/8) malam WIB, yang berlangsung di Wembley Stadium, London dibuatnya menjadi saksi keseriusan untuk mendapat kepercayaan dari sang nahkoda mengisi pos di sayap penyerangan United.

Nani sukses memborong dua gol, yang pada akhirnya menjadi penentu kemenangan skuad United. Dua gol ini pula yang memastikan United mengangkat gelar pertama di kancah sepak bola Inggris dimusim ini.

Sontak, apa yang ditunjukkan Nani pada laga tersebut terekam diingatan Sir Alex Ferguson. Fergie pun melayangkan pujian untuk pemain asal Portugal tersebut.

"Anda telah melihat permainan yang ditunjukkan Nani baik pada laga pramusim ataupun hari ini. Ia pasti akan tampil sebagai starter di awal (laga United) musim ini," kata Fergie seperti yang dikutip dari Goal.com.

"Ia memang bermain fantastis ditahun lalu. Namun, sangat disayangkan Antonio Valencia mampu hadir dengan memberi kesegaran baru bagi skuad," lanjut pelatih berusia 69 tahun ini.

United sendiri akan menjalani laga pertamanya di Liga Premier dengan bertandang ke The Hawthorns, menghadapi sang tuan rumah, West Brom, Minggu (14/8) mendatang.

Manchester, detiksport - Penampilan Nani di Community Shield akhir pekan kemarin dinilai memuaskan. Manajer Manchester United Sir Alex Ferguson pun memastikan bahwa satu tempat di starting XI musim depan jadi milik Nani.

Menjelang musim 2011/2012, Nani menjadi salah satu bahan pembicaraan. Kedatangan Ashley Young menimbulkan spekulasi bahwa si pemain Portugal harus berusaha keras untuk mendapatkan tempat reguler.

Kini satu posisi di starting XI sudah pasti jadi milik Nani. Penampilan pemain bernomor 17 itu di Community Shield akhir pekan kemarin dengan dua gol-nya, dinilai memuaskan.

Sebenarnya "terancam"-nya posisi Nani juga pernah terjadi di musim lalu, di mana The Red Devils mendatangkan Antonio Valencia.

"Musim lalu berlangsung fantastis bagi Nani. Dia membuat 15 assists dan mencetak delapan atau sembilan gol. Dia kurang beruntung karena Antonio Valencia datang di waktu di mana kami membutuhkan kesegaran dan dorongan untuk skuad," tandas Ferguson.

Manajer asal Skotlandia itu juga menegaskan bahwa Nani tidak terbebani oleh bayang-bayang Cristiano Ronaldo. "Dia tertutup bayang-bayang Ronaldo hanya karena keduanya sama-sama orang Portugal," ujar Sir Alex.

"Namun menurut saya Nani tak pernah ada di bawah bayang-bayang Ronaldo. Hanya kesamaan negara itu saja yang bisa saya lihat," pungkasnya.

Nani feels he's hit top form after declaring Sunday's man-of-the-match performance in the Community Shield as his best-ever.

The Portugal winger came off the bench in his country's 5-0 demolition of Luxembourg on Wednesday and is in confident mood ahead of the season opener against West Brom.

After having to deal with speculation about interest from Italy all summer, the former Sporting Lisbon star believes the the fact he is settled at United is enabling him to fulfil his enormous potential.

"I think it's fantastic because it is always a big derby," he told RTPN, when asked about last weekend. "We were losing 2-0 but we came back to get the result.

"We played an excellent game and I scored two goals. I came out of there very happy and I think that was my best game ever because it was a final and because it gave us a trophy.

"I always give my best, I'm fine and I want to stay that way until the end of the season."

As regards the talk of interest from Inter Milan and Juventus, he was happy to once again quash any talk of moving away from Old Trafford.

"I am very well there," he said of United. "I think it's the best club in the world and want to stay there and work well.

"It's good to know that big clubs are interested in me but, right now, I'm very satisfied with my club and I want to continue with them."

Nani says United’s best start to a season for 26 years is down to the unity within the squad.

It’s the first time since 1985/86 the Reds have won the first five games of a league campaign (that side won its first 10 league matches) and Nani says confidence is sky-high.

“The whole team has been working hard,” he said. “We’re all together and it gives us confidence for the games. We’re a compact team and we’ve been playing some fantastic football – one and two-touch football- and we’re scoring a lot of goals.”

The Reds found the net three times on Sunday against Chelsea, with Nani scoring the pick of the bunch. He jinked inside off the right wing before beating a man and unleashing an unstoppable shot that rocketed into the top corner.

Afterwards, Nani admitted it was a “beautiful” goal but shied away from declaring it his best in a United shirt.

“I’ve scored a couple of beautiful goals but I’d have to see the others to compare,” he said. “It was a nice goal, though.”

Nani’s strike on 37 minutes put United 2-0 ahead in a game that featured plenty of goalmouth action. Chelsea played their part in the entertainment, too, and on other day could have beaten the Reds with a similar performance.

“Everybody saw a game with lots of opportunities for both sides,” Nani said. “Chelsea had a lot of chances to score as well but I think our performance was better than theirs and that’s why we scored three goals. We had a lot of confidence and our football was better. I think we deserved the win.”

The Portuguese left Old Trafford with a bottle of champagne courtesy of host broadcaster Sky Sports, who named him Man of the Match. It was an assessment that raised no eyebrows from Sir Alex.

“Nani's marvellous, he was brilliant today," Sir Alex said. "Absolutely brilliant. He's a terrific player, the lad, and he's starting to mature. We're going to get the best years out of him, no doubt."

Di babak kedua, Chelsea sebenarnya punya banyak peluang bagus untuk mencetak gol. The Blues bahkan bisa saja menyamakan kedudukan kalau mereka lebih tajam di depan gawang.

Gelandang sayap Manchester United, Luis Nani berambisi menjadi salah satu pemain terbaik di dunia, yang nantinya diingat banyak orang, meski ia telah pensiun. Untuk itu, ia menyatakan akan berjuang semaksimal mungkin dalam setiap laganya.

Sejak bergabung dengan Manchester United, pada Juni 2007, nama Nani memang tak terlalu beken dikalangan pecinta sepak bola. Maklum, saat itu nama Cristiano Ronaldo lebih mentereng karena aksi-aksinya kerap menuai pujian.

Nani Berusaha Masuk Level Elit

Manchester - Dengan kemampuannya yang sekarang, Nani merasa masih belum masuk level elit, level para pemain terbaik, level yang kini menjadi tujuannya.

"Nani luar biasa. Dia brilian--sangat brilian. Dia pemain yang menakjubkan dan kini mulai matang," ujar Sir Alex Ferguson mengomentari Nani di The Sun. "Kami akan mengeluarkan kemampuan-kemampuan terbaik dari dirinya," lanjut Fergie.

Peran Nani bagi MU memang kian vital. Musim lalu menunjukkan bagaimana dirinya tampil sebagai bagian penting untuk tim, di mana dia muncul sebagai penyumbang assist terbanyak untuk Premier League.

Musim ini, dari lima pertandingan yang sudah berjalan, Nani sudah menyumbang tiga assist, yang hanya kalah dari rekan setimnya, Ashley Young (5 assist), dan Samir Nasri (4 assist). Catatan itu melengkapi dua gol yang sudah dicetaknya sejauh ini.

The evolution of Nani


Having evolved into an integral component of United's attacking arsenal, Nani is central to Sir Alex Ferguson's plans for the future. The Portuguese winger spoke to Inside United for October's issue, discussing his standing in the dressing room, his personal ambitions and his chances of emulating Ryan Giggs' longevity...

There’s no mistaking the change in Nani. The nervous teenager who arrived at Old Trafford in 2007 mumbling answers through an interpreter is gone; in his place is a young man brimming with confidence, joviality and, most strikingly, conducting himself entirely in United’s native tongue.

The Portuguese winger’s sustained brilliance in 2010/11 bagged the players’ player of the year award last May, and that accolade marks a clear change in his standing within the Reds’ ranks. Moreover, it has sent his confidence skyrocketing.

“It was very important for me inside the dressing room, with my team-mates,” he grins. “It showed me that now everyone knows my position inside, on the team and how important I am in the team, how much responsibility I have for the team and the club as well. That’s making me more confident, making me happier, making me want more responsibility. Now I’m in the right position to do everything I wanted in the past. I have arrived in the position I want - respect – in the last two seasons.

“Last year was my best year, definitely my most consistent season. Now I hope this is my year. I will do my best. If I am fit for every game, I am 100 percent sure I will do my best and will do well for my team. This is a big chance to show I can do much more, that I’m a good player with a very strong mentality. I always work hard to be successful help my team to win titles.”

In a summer of change which has largely ushered in youth in the stead of experience, Nani has undergone a promotion to a position of greater responsibility within the team. It’s clear he appreciates the added pressure.

“It’s true,” he laughs. “I’m one of the old players now! This is my fifth season here and yes, five years is enough to learn everything about this club. I’ve been in the most important moments of this club in the last few years and it’s great, the life I’ve had here.” When fronted with the suggestion that he could emulate Ryan Giggs and be a part of the Carrington furniture well into his 30s, the winger laughs again. “It would be nice,” he nods.

The laughter is, however, absent when the subject turns to his compatriot, Cristiano Ronaldo. Portuguese winger, two-footed, similar age: the comparisons are inevitable. But nevertheless, Nani is clearly tired of being held up against the player who he regards as one of his closest friends – indeed, his best friend during their time together at United.

“For five years, every time the question is the same,” he smiles. “It’s all about Ronaldo. You have to be him. Are you doing the same? Do you think you can do it now? Always when I do something good it’s the same. When I do ok, it’s nothing. When I do something very good, they come with this question about him. But it’s ok. It doesn’t change anything in me.

“This is my fifth year here and people know what I can do. Sometimes I play a nice game, sometimes I play not such a fantastic game, but I think everyone knows me and what I can do. Maybe my form has to be more consistent and my performances in the past should be like that. Now I’m in this position I’m more confident, more consistent. I can do in 90 minutes what in the past I just did in 45, and that’s most important.

“I don’t need to show anything to anyone because I know who I am, which player I am and now I just need to put everything on the pitch. When I do that, I do it for me, for my family and for my team. Of course, I know when I do that, it’s always for the fans as well. They take everything good from the game. They love goals and skills as well, but I don’t do it for the media because when you try to do it for the media, nothing goes well. I think the most important thing is to be natural and play the way you are.”

A fair point, and hardly the words of a man labouring in Ronaldo’s shadow. There are, I point out, also clear differences between them. There’s certainly a convincing argument that Nani has a superior left foot to the Real Madrid star. His Community Shield brace was supplied in southpaw fashion, while seven of last season’s ten goals were left-footed efforts.

“I’ve worked a lot on it in the past,” he admits. “I’ve been working on it since I was young. My left foot has been good from a long time ago. But now I still make sure I practice with it, and that’s why last year I think I scored so many with my left foot.”

Blessed with such ambidexterity, is there a chance Nani could be utilised more centrally? “Yeah, yeah, yeah,” he says. “When I was young I used to play midfield, number 10. In Sporting Lisbon I played number 10 as well, behind the striker. Everywhere. That’s a position that is no problem for me. The manager knows that. The manager knows I can play striker. When I was 19 at Sporting Lisbon, I started in midfield and would go to the right, then to striker, then to the left. Everywhere.”

That versatility may come in handy, with Sir Alex Ferguson adding Ashley Young to his brimming talent pool of wingers over the summer. Nani is unfazed, however, by the added competition. He’s seen enough of it in his time at United to appreciate its benefits. “It’s always been like that here,” he shrugs. “A lot of wingers and less positions! But everyone is going to fight to play and help the team. Every team has to have players to make a change, and it’s important for us too.

“It’s a good thing to have more players and more competition. I think we are better than last year. This year we will try to win more trophies than last season. Last year we did well but we just won the league. We will try to win more. We are proud to be champions, but we want to win even more this season. This year we will be more ready to play against every team.”

There’s no shortage of suitors for the Reds’ Barclays Premier League crown. Sir Alex Ferguson has tipped five other clubs to rival the reigning champions, and Nani also expects those familiar faces to stand between United and a record-extending 20th top flight title.

“It will be the same,” he opines. “City, Chelsea, Arsenal, it’s always the same. The league will always be decided in the last games. It’s always that way. The teams who can stay strongest in the last games will fight for the title.

“Chelsea are always a very experienced team with very strong players. Always the same. I think City will make the step up because they have new players. They need to find the team, but they have good players. We will see in the most important games.

"I don’t know about Liverpool. They made a lot of investment as well, but we will see. They are always strong at Anfield and very difficult to play there. It depends a lot. It’s all about the most important games because whoever loses less points in those games will have the conditions to win.”

And what of his personal ambition? If he can continue to play an integral role to United’s ambitions and meet his own demands of sustained improvement, is the ultimate ambition to become and be recognised as the best player in the world?

“That’s one dream I’ve got: to be the best in the world,” he nods, eagerly, before quickly adding: “But I don’t let it frustrate me.

"I’m not like: ‘I have to be the best in the world’, because I have other priorities like winning trophies with the team. Hopefully, when I have finished playing football, people will say ‘Nani was a fantastic player who won a lot of titles and beat records at the club’ or something like that. I know I have the condition to be among the select best players in the world, but I have to work hard and show that. Sometimes that doesn’t happen, but what I can promise is that as long as I am a football player, I will do my best to try to get there.”

Nani has arrived where he wants to be and he knows where he wants to go. With his growing confidence, ability and influence, you wouldn’t bet against him getting there.

"Pada musim pertama saya, mungkin beberapa pemain tidak tahu saya, lalu mereka melihat skill dan gol-gol saya - lalu di musim berikutnya mereka lebih berhati-hati. Sekarang selalu sama. Chronicles of Nani: From the crushing poverty of life as an outcast to United hero

May 2007. Aurelio Pereira receives a phone call from Carlos Queiroz, his old friend and Sir Alex Ferguson's assistant at Manchester United. Something is troubling Queiroz.
He has arrived in Portugal with his chief executive David Gill to hold transfer talks over the latest winger to roll off Sporting Lisbon's production line and wants to be sure that United are making the right decision by paying £17million for Luis Carlos Almeida da Cunha, otherwise known as Nani.
'Carlos was in a hotel in Lisbon,' recalls Pereira, the 64-year-old head of Sporting's scouting network who is revered in Portugal for unearthing stars like Luis Figo, Cristiano Ronaldo, Paulo Futre and Ricardo Quaresma but rarely speaks publicly about his proteges.

'He wanted to know about Nani's mentality and if he could handle the pressure of playing for United.
'He didn't want to know if he had good feet. He knew all about that. He wanted to know about his personality, how he could cope with a different country and a different team.
'It was a big responsibility for Carlos because it was a 25m euro deal and he wanted to be absolutely sure. I calmed him and said that, yes, he was buying a complete player.'
Hours later United shake hands with Sporting on a deal to take the 20-year-old to Old Trafford, and the next chapter in Nani's remarkable life story begins.

The number 184 is daubed on the door in blue paint but the street, if you can call it that, has no name; just a dusty track that cuts through the long grass to the place where Nani was raised in Santa Filomena, a shanty town built on the hillside overlooking Amadora northwest of Lisbon.
Thirty per cent of people between the ages of 15 and 30 who live here have a criminal record. It is unwise to pay a visit unless you are in the company of a local like Alcides Mendes, the founder and president of Espaco Jovem, the youth association that helped keep Nani away from crime after he was separated from his parents who had brought him from the African islands of Cape Verde at an early age.
His father Domingos returned there on holiday when Nani was seven and didn't come back. His mother Maria do Ceu left Portugal for Holland when he was 12, although by then the youngest of their 10 children had already chosen to live here in Santa Filomena with his aunt Antonia and her family, often sleeping six to a room with his brother and cousins.

Through the iron bars protecting the windows there is a clear view down to the railway tracks which Nani would follow on foot during the six-mile round trip to training with his first club Real Massama. Sometimes, if he was late, he would jump on the train and dodge the ticket collector. On the other hand, it is only a short two-minute walk to the concrete five-a-side pitch in the middle of Santa Filomena where he mastered the art of street football.
'That's the big market for us,' says Pereira. 'The African kids from these quarters like Nani. Even now you can see how he mixes the high level of performance with the tricks of the street.'

It was here that Nani learned how to become two-footed, a quality he has used to devastating effect coming in off the right wing for United.
'I'd stay for hours on that ring and kick with my left and right foot,' he says. 'I wanted badly to play as well with my left as I played with the right.'
Of the 80 poor kids in Santa Filomena, Mendes remembers that Nani was the 'only one who didn't stop chasing his dream'.
'He would choose the weaker players for his side in order to always have the ball,' says Mendes. 'It was five-a-side, winner stays on, and every time he lost he would be sick. He was totally focussed on winning. He just wanted to be out there playing, nothing else.
'It was very hard for the kids to know the world outside this place. The problem here is that most of the people are not immigrants but they're not Portuguese either.

'They were born here but their parents are from the former African colonies like Cape Verde, so they are outcasts in society (Nani did not become a Portuguese citizen until the age of 18). Even in school they create separate classes for them.
'Nani's was a small house but the family were close and there was a great relationship between the cousins.
'His older brother was very important for Nani. He used to work in construction and sometimes Nani would go with him to help at work. He developed this strong feeling of family even though they were poor. It was a home.'
In spite of the hardship, Nani has happy memories of his upbringing. His other favourite pastime with the association was capoeira, a combination of Brazilian martial art and music. The trademark somersaults that follow each of his goals were a common sight on the streets of Santa Filomena.
'My friends said I was nuts but I wanted to keep something from capoeira and that's why I always celebrate with a flip-flop,' said Nani in a television interview in Portugal this week. 'People would always talk about that kid Nani (his sister gave him the name), the one with the curly hair.
'Life was tough but joyful. The only problem was hunger. We had not very good conditions at home, not much food. And it was my brother Paulo who'd sometimes bring food home, like cookies.

Unveiling: Fergie shelled out £17m to buy Nani from the Portuguese giants
'We would steal fruit and other stuff to eat. I went to some bad paths, but I would always return to the right one.
'You can't change or hide the past, and I'm not ashamed of the place I was born or the hard times I went through. If I reached where I wanted it was my effort and will, and it was worth it.'
Nani denies that his dad walked out on the family, insisting that red tape prevented him from returning to Portugal. The two men met up again in 2006 and Nani recalls: 'He tried to explain to me that he never abandoned me, but I just stopped the conversation and told him: "You don't need to. I'm cool. I'm happy, I know what happened, so you don't owe me any explanations".
'I didn't miss him so much because my brothers filled his role. They would give me all the support and love. I was the little boy, the protected, and nobody could touch me.'

Nani has not forgotten the times when he relied on Real Massama for food and his friends for clothes.
'I had lots of friends who helped me a lot and supported me because I had many difficulties,' he says. 'I couldn't afford expensive clothes so my colleagues would give me the trainers they weren't using anymore or their clothes. Sometimes they invited me to spend a week at their houses.
'I became a son of Massama. They gave me everything – boots and food. I had privileges that nobody else in the club had.'

Nani's mentor at the Second Division club, Luis Dias, admits that he could have joined Benfica instead of following his destiny to Sporting Lisbon and Old Trafford. Dias, now a youth coach at Sporting, was Nani's Under 11 coach when Massama were invited to play at the Stadium of Light by then Benfica boss Graeme Souness.

'It's true he was training with Benfica as well as Sporting,' says Dias. 'Benfica brought Massama to play in a big stadium in front of all the fans before a game against Boavista.

Sensing the youngster's embarrassment at having to carry his boots in a plastic bag, Dias arranged for a senior player to donate a Lotto boot bag. It was all part of the special attention given to Nani.
'I had to be coach, psychologist, doctor, driver sometimes,' says Dias. 'I knew my job wasn't just training him. I also had to be a tutor, control what he was eating, how he was sleeping, go to the school and make sure he was going to classes. The things normally parents do.
'At Massama, he would have lunch before training and always have dinner afterwards. It was something we didn't do with the other kids. If he didn't eat at the club he probably wouldn't have eaten at all.'

It's half an hour's drive from Lisbon, south across the 11-mile Vasco da Gama Bridge and the mouth of the River Tagus, before you reach the countryside around Alcochete and the place where Nani polished his skills.
Even then, as you pass by the fields of cattle and sobreiro trees that produce Portugal's cork, there is a only a small orange road sign to indicate the final turn to the Academia do Sporting Clube de Portugal.
It is almost 10 years since Sporting built this complex, complete with seven pitches and a hotel for 50 of the 130 youngsters who train here. 'We have something special going on here,' says Matos, whose current crop of Under 19s are emerging as one of the best in Europe in the much-lauded NextGen Series.
In the gym, Nani's personal best of 63 runs, covering 2,520metres, in the dreaded 'bleep test' is listed at seventh on the all-time leaders' board.
Although it was decided to keep him at Massama because of his domestic situation, he trained regularly with Sporting before joining the club at the age of 16. Nani earned £900-a-month here as an academy player but that rose to £10,000 when he signed as a professional.
The money helped to move his aunt Antonia out of Santa Filomena, and he continues to support his family financially now that he earns considerably more at United. It is a burden Nani gladly takes on but one, he admits, that has often interfered with his career in the Premier League.

'I thank God for my current situation and I'm a pillar to my family,' he says. 'Every time there is a problem they come to me and I never say no. I know what I've been through when I was younger. I just can't see someone from the family having difficulties.
'But personal problems make me lose my focus. Sometimes I'm mentally tired of it all. It might even be before a big match or a derby, but I will pick up the phone and call whoever it takes to solve the problem right away.
'I earn a lot of money but it didn't fall from the sky. I must run. When I don't play well, people will chase me. I'm the bad guy.'

Life in England has not been easy for Nani. It took a while to win over the fans and emerge from Ronaldo's shadow at United. Indeed, there have been times when Queiroz's initial concerns seemed justified.
Even after leading the Premier League in assists last season, he found himself on the bench for the Champions League Final against Barcelona, and the arrival of England winger Ashley Young in the summer prompted speculation that the 24-year-old could be on his way out of Old Trafford.
In fact, Nani has arguably been United's best player this season. He is happier off the pitch as well in the Cheshire home he shares with partner Daniela and their two dogs (a Labrador and a Chow Chow).
It's in contrast to his traumatic introduction to Manchester, even though Ronaldo was already there to help his friend adapt to the new surroundings.

Turning point: Nani's show at Arsenal in 2010 has been seen as a watershed
'The toughest part was to live alone, not speaking the language,' says Nani. 'There was a phase when I was living at Cristiano's house and it was very good. There were always cheerful people and we had everything – swimming pool, jacuzzi, tennis, ping-pong. I never missed my family.
'But later I had to leave Cristiano's to make my own life. It was hard because it was a big house and by night it seemed like a witch's house.
'I was even afraid of being home alone. Sometimes I didn't even leave the room. I went to bed early without eating properly because I didn't want to have dinner alone.'
Even now, Nani admits, he will not watch horror movies because it gives him sleepless nights. He prefers to follow the TV soap operas with Daniela and play the piano.
'It relaxes me a lot,' he says. 'And it's good to practise your concentration.'

On Saturday Nani returns to Liverpool with unhappy memories. It was at Anfield in March that he was carried off in tears after a tackle from Jamie Carragher cut the United player's left shin to the bone.
Nani later claimed that it was the fear of missing the rest of the season, of not being able to play the game he loves, that made him cry rather than the injury itself.

'I know how hard it was for me to get here,' he says. 'I will keep fighting to go as high as I can. I will give my best to show that there is someone who fights in the name of the family.'
The boy from Santa Filomena has come a long way.

Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson singled out Nani for praise after the Reds came through a difficult night against Otelul Galati with victory.

Wayne Rooney's two penalties were decisive, although Nemanja Vidic's red card was a negative point.

Ferguson said: "I think in these away games you have to work, they are not easy.

"In the second half we improved a great deal, Nani's performance in the second half was terrific.

"I'm satisfied with the result. It was a long night and we had to be patient."

Sir Alex Ferguson will slap a ‘not for sale’ sign on Manchester United winger Nani to put off Europe’s top clubs from making a swoop for the Portuguese star.

The Reds manager has worked hard on transforming Nani from a frustrating starlet into one of the Premier League’s top performers.

That has alerted clubs from Italy and Spain, who are ready to pounce for a player, who is out of contract in 2014.

Inter Milan, AC Milan and Juventus are all monitoring the 24-year-old, while he has also been linked with a move to Real Madrid – following in the footsteps of former United team-mate Cristiano Ronaldo.

But Ferguson sees Nani as a key figure at Old Trafford, along with Wayne Rooney, as the players he wants to build his last great team around.

He was quick to tie him down to a new long-term deal in March last year, despite him still having two years to run on his existing contract and with the jury still out on whether he would live up to his potential.

Having been named United’s player of the year last season by his team-mates, he is now seen as one of the pivotal members of Ferguson’s squad.

United’s policy is to begin contract renegotiations within the last two years to 18 months on the player’s current deal, which see talks with Nani begin any time from next March.

The biggest concern they have is that he will be ready for a new challenge, having moved to the Premier League in 2007 in a deal worth around £20m from Sporting Lisbon.

United’s board will not risk losing one of their most valuable assets for nothing, so if there is any indication from his representatives that he will not commit his future to the club, Ferguson will be forced to cash in.

He could expect to command a fee in the region of £35m for a player still to hit his peak.

For his part, Nani will want to move more in line with United’s highest earners, Rooney, Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic.

But perhaps more important will be assurances from Ferguson that he is key to his plans.

Despite his outstanding form last season, Nani was a surprise omission from the starting line up in the Champions League final defeat to Barcelona.

Antonio Valencia was preferred at Wembley, with Nani coming on as a second-half substitute.

So far this season he has figured more in Ferguson’s strongest XI, playing on the opposite side to summer signing, Ashley Young.

He has failed to consistently hits the heights this term but has still scored five times and is one of the leading players in the Premier League for assists, with four.

And he was shortlisted for this year’s Ballon d’Or along with Rooney.

Nani has largely shaken off the tag of being Ronaldo’s successor, since his countryman left for Madrid in a world record £80m move in 2009.

Comparisons between the two weighed heavily on his shoulders in his early seasons at Old Trafford. He was expected to be shown the door until finding consistency midway through the 2009-10 campaign.

That earned him a new deal and last season he was a vital part of United’s record 19th title success.

MANCHESTER United midfielder Nani has admitted he wept like a child after his club’s Champions League exit.

Sir Alex Ferguson’s squad were stunned by the way they were knocked out by Swiss side Basel on Wednesday night.

Portuguese winger Nani said: “I wept like a kid in the dressing room in Basel.

“All of my team-mates were also affected because nobody could quite believe that we had been knocked out at just the group stage. It was like hell in there.

“This defeat and the loss at Wembley in the final last May have been the worst two days in my United career.

“I am so sad about what has happened. It is almost *unbelievable. The dressing room in Basel was like a funeral.”

Nani is determined not to give United’s army of critics the satisfaction of seeing them dramatically fall from grace. And the Portugal winger believes the Reds have already proved those critics wrong after crashing out of the Champions League. And after securing a first-leg win over Ajax in Amsterdam that makes next Thursday’s return leg a near formality, Nani believes he and his team-mates can look back on the last few weeks with a sense of satisfaction. “Everyone expects us to do something different, that we haven’t done in the past,” he said. “We have always been in first position. We have won so many trophies and reach the final of every competition. But, of course, sometimes you lose matches that you don’t anticipate.

“After we lost in the Champions League, a lot of people thought we would lose more games and see other teams win the trophies. “But we are strong and we are fighting in every game to continue to give our supporters what they want – titles. “That is what we want as well.” Ferguson’s team selection in the Amsterdam ArenA reflected a clear intention to win despite talk that he would rest his first-team regulars. And far from focusing solely on overhauling neighbours City and securing a record 20th league title, Nani is just as determined to lift the Europa League trophy in Bucharest on May 9. “This is an important competition and we have to enjoy it,” he said. “Of course, the Champions League is the most important trophy for everyone.

It is the biggest trophy in Europe. “But now we are here, we just think about this competition. The club has never won the trophy. Now we will try to do this.” The only downside to the victory in Amsterdam was Antonio Valencia’s hamstring injury which could rule the Ecuador winger out for a month. But despite the blow, Nani was delighted to see Tom Cleverley, Ashley Young and Phil Jones back in action. “It is very important to have everyone fit and ready for the big games that are in front of us,” he added.

Kontrak Baru 27 Juta Poundsterling Untuk Nani

Manchester - Kabar baik mendatangi Manchester United terkait kondisi pemainnya yang tengah cedera. Akan bisa kembali berlatih, Nani diharapkan bisa memperkuat The Red Devils dalam waktu dekat ini.

Nani sudah tak masuk skuad dalam tiga pertandingan terakhir MU. Pesepakbola asal Portugal itu mengalami cedera saat berlatih bersama 'Setan Merah'.

Namun Sir Alex Ferguson dan seluruh fans MU tak perlu menunggu lama lagi untuk melihat Nani kembali berada di atas lapangan. Segera akan kembali berlatih, pemain 25 tahun itu diharapkan kembali dalam waktu dekat.

United players 'angry' at losing concentration, says Nani

Nani has admitted a lack of concentration was to blame for pitching Manchester United into the most important derby clash of Sir Alex Ferguson's career at the Etihad Stadium next Monday.

Ten minutes from time at Old Trafford yesterday, most United fans were dreaming of the elation at retaining their crown at the home of those troublesome "noisy neighbours", which would have been the prize for beating Manchester City.

Now, barring improbably large victories in their final two games, Ferguson and his players know that, not only will they surrender top spot if they lose, there will be nothing they can do to alter the situation should City win their final two games.

And for that, United only have themselves to blame.

"There is anger from the players," said Nani.

"The concentration was not the best in the last few minutes - that's why they were able to create chances and score goals.

"We had a lot of possession and played some fantastic football in attack. But we conceded too many goals and we're not happy about that."

Some in the United camp have been quick to try and limit the damage by claiming that, at the beginning of January, after successive defeats to Blackburn and Newcastle, hands would have been bitten off to approach this game with a three-point advantage.

It has also been pointed out that United began their surge by beating City in an FA Cup tie where they established a three-goal lead.

However, for every positive, a negative can be found.

That Cup tie, for instance, ended with shredded nerves from a United perspective as City fought their way back to 3-2, despite the additional handicap of being reduced to 10 men due to Vincent Kompany's harsh dismissal.

And, while United's form to Easter Sunday was almost flawless, then have won only once in three games since and the defensive frailties again exposed by Everton are unlikely to be sorted out fully in a week, no matter how much work is done on the training ground.

For virtually the first time since he ruptured cruciate ligaments in December, United have cause to lament the absence of skipper Nemanja Vidic, knowing the Serbian was also missing when City inflicted that morale-sapping 6-1 defeat at Old Trafford in October.

Vidic is not available, though, so Ferguson has to work with what he has.

Such was the poor performance of Rafael at right-back against Everton that a change is virtually certain.

Yet Phil Jones has been equally loose in his defending recently and Chris Smalling would be a better bet if it were not for the fact he has not started a Premier League game since January.

There has to be a question mark over Ferguson electing to start with two wide players, as he did in that first traumatic Premier League derby of the season, especially as he cannot allow his team to run the risk of Paul Scholes and Michael Carrick being outmanoeuvred in central midfield by Yaya Toure.

"Of course," said Nani, when asked whether United can still secure a 20th league title.

"We have to keep believing in our qualities because we still have a great opportunity to win the title.

"It's a huge game [at City] - there will be a fantastic atmosphere there.

"It will be a difficult game, but if you want to win the league you cannot think about the atmosphere or the opponents, we must just think about the way we play and try to win the game."

However, for all the forceful words of positivity, together with the looming presence of Carlos Tevez, it is that 6-1 scoreline which provides the backdrop to next Monday's fixture, the elephant in the room which underlines what City are capable of if United do not get it right.

NANI last night ended all speculation about his future by insisting: “Manchester United is my home.”

Ahead of tomorrow’s crunch derby against Manchester City, the £25million winger lifted the lid on his love for the champions, his admiration for boss Alex Ferguson and his desire to sign a new long-term deal.

Nani, 25, announced his engagement to model girlfriend Daniela Martins earlier this week and has no thoughts of leaving the Cheshire mansion they share for a lucrative move abroad.

He said: “I left Portugal for a great personal challenge and to improve as a player.

“There have been times when it’s not been easy but they treat me well here and, step by step, I am fulfilling my dreams.

“Manchester United is my home.”

Nani will have two years left on his existing £80,000-a-week deal in the summer but talks are already under way about improving that and tying him to the club until at least June 2016.

Italian giants AC Milan and Juventus have both expressed an interest in the player, who has hit 13 goals this season.

But Nani added: “The manager has immense faith in me and that’s all that matters.

“My agent is negotiating with the club on a new deal and things are going very well.

“I hope at the end of the season an agreement will be reached.”

You would expect it to, as Nani insists Fergie is the best manager on the planet.

But the player also admits he has felt the full force of the Fergie hairdryer treatment.

Nani added: “He is a great coach. For me, the best in the world.

“But I have trembled in his presence when he hasn’t been happy.

“I remember some games when we had won by two or three goals and he still wasn’t happy.

“It seemed like we had lost. He’s not someone you want to argue with.”

Nani arrived at Old Trafford from Sporting Lisbon in July 2007 and has already played 193 games for the club.

But his importance has blossomed in the wake of fellow Portugal star Cristiano Ronaldo’s departure to Real Madrid in June 2009.

And although Nani admits he talks constantly with his international team-mate, he loathes the comparisons between them.

Nani said: “I am always in contact with Cristiano.

“He has been a great help to me since I came to the club, along with the manager and Carlos Queiroz.

“But I don’t like the comparisons with Cristiano as a player.

“We are different and have attributes to our game that aren’t similar.

“But, unfortunately, the public frequently compare us.

“What I can tell you, though, is Cristiano is still a huge United fan and is desperate to see us retain the title.”

Who wins the title is likely to be decided in tomorrow’s crunch clash with bitter rivals City at the Etihad Stadium.

It will be broadcast to a worldwide TV audience of 650million — the biggest in Premier League history — and Fergie has billed it as “the derby game of all derby games”.

But Nani, who should shake off a minor ankle injury to start, feels United can handle the pressure and believes striker Wayne Rooney will prove the difference on the night.

Rooney has bagged 36 goals this season — 180 in total for United — and is chasing Bobby Charlton’s all-time record of 249.

Nani said: “Rooney is in tremendous goalscoring form.

“He is unique, a world-class striker and could be the decisive difference on the night.

“We’re not going to City in fear or living with pressure. Manchester United players are equipped to handle it.

“It has been a season of many ups and downs but our destiny still remains in our own hands.

“However, we won’t be going looking for a draw — even though we find ourselves three points better off than City.

“It’s not our mentality, it doesn’t come into our thinking.”

Nani also feels it is important to banish thoughts of the 6-1 home hammering by City earlier in the season.
