Portuguese Luís Carlos Almeida da Cunha (or ‘Nani’ as we all know him) is a powerful and pacy winger. He arrived at Old Trafford from Sporting Lisbon in 2007 and, predictably, was given the tag of being ‘the next Cristiano Ronaldo’.

It’s perhaps an unfair comparison given the heights Ronaldo has scaled in the last two seasons, but Nani will have taken note of how his countryman worked so hard to hone his raw talents in his early years at Old Trafford, transforming inexperience and inconsistency into maturity and regularly threatening displays.

Nani produces explosive bursts of brilliance, his goals are spectacular and well worthy of his equally extravagant backflip celebrations. But the challenge now, after a patchy second season in England, is to do it consistently at the top level. Like Ronaldo in his first three seasons at Old Trafford, the good form comes in spells. Nani, who scored four goals in 41 appearances as the Reds clinched the Premier League and Champions League trophies, can play on either flank and showed his speed, skill and scoring potential in his first season at OT.

Old Trafford got its first glimpse of Nani's trademark acrobatic celebration when he scored his first United goal against Tottenham in August 2007, and he followed that with goals against Middlesbrough, Arsenal and – the goal that perhaps most endeared him to Reds fans – a great strike in the 3-0 win over Liverpool at Old Trafford in March 2008.

Nani’s move to United was announced in May 2007, the same day Anderson’s arrival from FC Porto was confirmed, though he officially joined United in July 2007 for an undisclosed fee from Sporting Lisbon, after being tracked for some time by Sir Alex Ferguson and his scouting staff. His Sporting debut came at the age of 18, scoring five times in 29 appearances in the Portuguese league in 2006/07. He found the net on his international debut against Denmark in September 2006, and also featured for Portugal in the Euro 2008 championships in Austria and Switzerland.

Nani overtook his goals tally during his second season with a wonder strike in the 4-2 Carling Cup semi-final second leg clash with Derby. It shows signs of improvement, and Ronaldo has promised Nani will further raise his game. “I really hope he has the same success as me, or even more, because he’s got the ability to do this," said Ronny. "He joined the right club to evolve as a player and as a person.”

MADRID, KOMPAS.com - Bagi gelandang Manchester United, Nani, kisah sukses timnya bersama Cristiano Ronaldo hanyalah kenangan belaka. Kini MU berjuang tanpa ingin mengingat kehebatan Ronaldo dan Nani tak mau disamakan dengannya.

Sepeninggal CR7 dan Carlos Tevez, banyak yang meragukan serangan-serangan Wayne Rooney cs. Itu terbukti dalam empat laga Premier League sejak awal bulan ini. Di luar kemenangan lawan Wigan, produktivitas MU menurun drastis. "Setan Merah" seperti kehilangan roh permainan dan belum tampak ada pemain yang bakal menggantikan kehebatan Ronaldo.

The Portuguese winger had an awful afternoon at the Britannia Stadium with Manchester United looking much stronger after he was subbed off.

Stoke fans taunted him with chants of 'You'll never be Ronaldo' and he was hooked by boss Alex Ferguson early in the second half. Then his replacement Ryan Giggs inspired a 2-0 win.

Manchester - Nani pernah disebut-sebut sebagai "Cristiano Ronaldo Baru" ketika pertama kali mendarat di Old Trafford. Kini setelah yang asli tak ada, sudah saatnya bagi dia untuk maju.

Kesamaan di antara keduanya bukan hanya terletak pada kewarganegaraan, yakni Portugal, tetapi juga posisi bermain. Keduanya sama-sama berposisi asli winger. Jika Ronaldo kerap menyisir sisi kanan, maka Nani di sebelah kiri.

Selepas keluarnya dia, permainan MU dengan kehadiran Giggs menjadi lebih hidup. The Welsh Wizard akhirnya menjadi pahlawan kemenangan lewat dua assist yang disumbangkannya. The Red Devils akhirnya menang 2-0.

Nani sendiri menyadari bahwa performanya memang tak cemerlang dalam laga tersebut. Karena ada laga yang lebih berat menanti, melawan Wolfsburg di Liga Champions midweek ini, pemain berusia 22 tahun itu pun berusaha mencari jalan keluar. Salah satunya, meminta saran dari Ronaldo.

Ia membocorkan bahwa dirinya kerap meminta saran Ronaldo dan dari sahabatnya itulah biasanya ia mendapatkan motivasi untuk memperbaiki penampilan.

"Saya dan Cristiano sering berbicara. Kami membicarakan permainan saya dan dia memberikan saya kepercayaan diri untuk masuk ke lapangan dan bermain dengan baik," tukasnya seperti dilansir The Sun.

Yang dimintai saran pun memiliki pendapat tersendiri soal permainan kompatriotnya itu. "Nani adalah pemain yang sangat bagus. Saya yakin dalam beberapa tahun ke depan ia akan berada di antara deretan pemain-pemain terbaik dunia," tandasnya.

Replacing Ronaldo – Obertan Or Nani?

Gabriel Obertan impressed for much of his début against Barnsley before looking tired in the final fifteen minutes or so. He kept the ball really well, ran at the opposition with speed and showed off his silky skills. He looks to be the real deal, regardless of what Larry White thinks.

He’s only had one game so there’s no point getting ahead of ourselves, but some sections of the press have already questioned what impact Obertan’s arrival and début might have on Nani. Is this fair?

On the spectrum of love to hate for Nani, I am found lingering on the more negative side, although do still believe there is a chance of him having a future at this club.

The comparisons between Nani and Cristiano Ronaldo were always going to be made, given they were both Portuguese, came from the same club and played the same position, although I think Nani has always been sold short.

Nani was two years older than Ronaldo when he first came and it showed. Nani was a much more complete player in his first year than Ronaldo had been in his first two years. For one thing, his shooting technique was far superior, with the blinding goals he scored against Spurs and Boro something Ronaldo would have struggled to emulate even in his last season at the club.

Their scoring rate was comparable (Ronaldo scored 4 goals in 29 league games, Nani scored 3 in 26) but Nani scored against tougher opposition. Whilst credit has to go to Ronaldo for making it 3-0 against City in the FA Cup as well as scoring in the final against Championship side Millwall, his others goals against Birmingham, Spurs, Portsmouth and Villa were hardly going to get the country to sit up and pay attention. In contrast Nani scored screamers against Spurs and Boro, but also scored against Arsenal and Liverpool, without forgetting him taking what could have been our last penalty in the shoot-out. He stepped up for our fifth penalty knowing that if he missed we had lost the European Cup but he whacked it as close to the right side of the post as he could, past Petr Cech, cool as you like. His most memorable moment of the season was probably when he took the piss out of Arsenal and squared up to Willy Gallas. Brilliant.

In Nani’s second year though he fell out of favour and was given limited opportunities. Whilst Ronaldo had the likes of Solskjaer, Fletcher (when he was crap) and Kleberson to compete with, Nani had Ronaldo (The Best Player in the World), Park, Fletcher (when he became good) and Giggs (PFA Player of the Year) to compete with.

I’m not Nani’s biggest fan but I can’t help but think the negative attitude towards him has been encouraged because of the comparison’s to Ronaldo, but the truth is, Nani’s raw ability when he first came was superior of Ronaldo’s, in terms of shooting and crossing in particular, but he’s never been given the same run at the team Ronaldo was. Remember when Ronaldo was not so fondly referred to as a ‘one trick pony’ in the press and by rival fans, that ‘one trick’ being the stepover. He was fairly infuriating to watch, going to ground too easily, having lame attempts on goal and not getting his crosses past the first man. But he was afforded the time to improve because of the inferior squad we had between 2003 and 2005. Nani came in at a higher level but wasn’t given that same opportunity to gain experience and improve because our squad was so much better.

So this has to be his last season to really give him a shot and being a starting player for United. He may never fulfil the potential with us and go on to be a great player for another club, but we have to give him a real go. So far it’s all been a bit half-hearted.

2009-2010: 45 minutes against Brum, nothing against Burnley, 90 minutes against Wigan, 90 minutes against Arsenal, 8 minutes against Spurs, 90 minutes against Besiktas, didn’t get off the bench against City, 90 minutes in the League Cup, 56 minutes against Stoke, didn’t get off the bench against Wolfsburg, 90 minutes against Sunderland, didn’t get off the bench against Bolton, 90 minutes against CSKA Moscow, 15 minutes against Liverpool, not in the squad against Barnsley.

Sir Alex Ferguson has today claimed that Obertan will likely be in the squad for tomorrow’s match against Blackburn, leaving Nani, Valencia and Giggs to fight over the starting positions, with Park still a few weeks away from recovery.

Obertan looks great, I’d love to think he has a bright future at the club, I’d like to see him getting sub appearances in the league and a starting place in the cups, but this season has to be Nani’s final push. We paid £17m for the lad and he has shown flashes of absolute brilliance. Equally, he has been totally infuriating. But the last totally infuriating player we had went on to be the best in the world, so maybe it’s in our best interest to try to be a little more patient with Nani.

Luís Carlos Almeida da Cunha’s recent performances for Manchester United have been just as frustrating as his first appearances for the club nearly two and a half season’s ago. It begs the question, with little improvement, is the Portuguese winger simply not good enough to play for United or just a bit simple?

The pointless stepover, a wasted pass, or an incomprehensible shot with better placed teammate ignored; all trademarks of which Nani cannot be proud. Yet for all Nani’s infuriating habits the Portuguese winger is undoubtedly talented. The former Sporting protégé’s début goal – a scorching 30-yarder against Tottenham Hotspur at Old Trafford – symptomatic of the bipolar nature of the player’s gifts.

Indeed, many supporters – correctly – point to Cristiano Ronaldo’s inconsistency in the early years with United. The Real Madrid player did not reach a double figure goal tally until his third season at Old Trafford. At a similar stage of his Old Trafford career, Nani could yet match his more illustrious predecessor. Although, in his fourth complete season as a professional Ronaldo struck 26 times in total.

The goalscoring timeline is not wholly instructive of course. Perhaps a more relevant comparison is with the technical progress the two players made over the same period. Not only has Nani failed to improve but in his second season the 22-year-old was a shadow of the player who scored that stunning goal against Spurs. That the winger was largely relegated to the Carling Cup side, playing alongside the reserves, was a clear indicator of Nani’s fall down the Old Trafford player hierarchy last season.

This campaign Nani has delivered just one stand-out performance – against CSKA Moscow in the Russian capital a fortnight ago. It was the exception to a disappointing rule that has seen the winger misfire if trusted at all.

Statistics aside, Nani’s failure to mature is, surely, immensely frustrating for a manager who prides himself on youth development. While Nani is just over a year younger than the departed Cristiano Ronaldo, he is miles away from the Real Madrid player’s quality.

Perhaps even more enlightening is the rapid progress of Antonio Valencia at Old Trafford who, after an uncertain start, is looking every bit a Manchester United player.

Why then cannot the greatest manger United has possessed and the world-class infrastructure at his disposal not coach the worst of Nani’s excesses out of the Cape Verde-born player’s game? After all, the United coaching staff eliminated Ronaldo’s unnecessary showmanship; and experience improved the player’s decision-making and team work.

Yet such is the paucity of Nani’s credible performances this campaign that it is tempting to write-off his season already and hope that the player returns from the World Cup – should Portugal make it past Bosnia in the play-offs – significantly more mature.

But, five seasons into a professional career, Nani may have already peaked as a player. On Tuesday night he delivered yet another infuriating performance. The only surprise was that the wide-man made it past half-time before being hauled off.

This weekend Nani will surely be left on the bench once again, the peerless Ryan Giggs and aforementioned Valencia starting on the wings.

Then in January the highly-rated right-side player Adem Ljajić arrives from Partizan Belgrade.

While Nani’s place on the left is not directly affected by Ljajić’s arrival, speculation that United is preparing a bid for Benfica’s outstanding Angel di Maria or Valencia’s world-class left-sided forward David Silva will touch a little too close to home for the Portuguese.

Somehow it seems doubtful that Nani will get the message.

When Nani arrived to Manchester United for the fee thought to be around £15 million he was only 20 years old and looked like the player that in couple of year’s time could become a key member of Sir Alex Ferguson’s team. He has shown some glimpses of quality during his first two seasons at Old Trafford but the problem is that instead of getting better by the day, the Portuguese winger’s performances kept deteriorating and in my opinion it’s high time he was shown the door.

Nani was always expected to replace Ronaldo once CR7 left Old Trafford and he finally got his chance last summer. A couple of good performances early into the season hinted he might be able to step up the plate but the fans soon had a reality check. The Portuguese player continued with inconsistent performances that saw the fans eagerly awaiting for the return of Giggs and Park from injuries, and he now looks even on the brink of falling down the pecking order behind Gabriel Obertan, the player who’s amassed just four appearances for Manchester United (Manchester United news). Ferguson’s decision to bring in Obertan for Giggs, while leaving Nani on the bench in the derby game against Chelsea, proved that even the boss had had it enough with Nani.

Even though he is still just 22, Nani had almost three years to show he is a United material and need I say he utterly failed? Yes, the pressure of expectation was high after he was dubbed the man to replace CR7 but that cannot be an excuse. He’s had his chance and failed to take it. It’s simple as that.

This looks like the right time to cash in on Nani since I am sure a lot of Premiership (Premiership odds) managers would be happy to have him in the squad and clubs tend to be desperate in January, especially if they are close to the relegation zone. With Giggs back from injury and Park and even Hargreaves due to return very soon, Ferguson can definitely do without him, especially if Obertan continues to up his game. Nani is the player who can take defenders on and he occasionally unleashes a good shot from distance but he is definitely not a team player and is simply too inconsistent. Yes, I know you will argue that Ronaldo (Cristiano Ronaldo goals) wasn’t a team player either but Ronnie would score 30 odd goals per season and I am sure Ferguson wouldn’t mind Nani’s selfishness if he was to emulate his countryman’s record.

Nani has risked fracturing his relationship with Sir Alex Ferguson after appearing to criticise the Manchester United manager for not investing enough confidence in him and discussing how the Scot loses his temper.

The Portugal international, who is preparing for his country's World Cup play-off against Bosnia-Herzegovina, has lost his place in the United team after failing to live up the expectation which accompanied his £17m move from Sporting Lisbon in the summer of 2007.

"People expect more from me and it's not easy," he was quoted as telling the Portuguese newspaper 'I'. "I could be doing better, scoring more, but just think, I make a huge game today but the next one, I'm not even sure that I will play. Such a situation breaks the confidence.

"I know it is still early and that there are lots of games to play this season but I never got to play the big matches like Liverpool, Manchester City or Tottenham and, if I don't play those matches, I get sadder by the day. I also played through a foot injury so we'll see if things improve from now on."

Nani said that "for now I am not considering" leaving Old Trafford. He also spoke about Ferguson's relationship with the players and displays of anger. He said he had been on the receiving end of the manager's rage.

"Hell, yeah. He goes: 'Nani, how could you miss this or this?' No one is safe in the pitch. He treats all the players as equals. Even Ryan Giggs and Gary Neville get it but it takes longer with them because they are more experienced.

"And it is always with '**** this' and '**** that' back and forth. He is a very complicated guy, very complicated and he is tough. If things are OK, he will be OK. But the £16m winger insists he will fight for his United future – despite revealing the furious bust-ups he has had with his manager.

Italian giants Juventus and AC Milan are leading the chase for out of form Manchester United winger Nani according to reports in Italian publication Tuttosport. Reports suggest that both clubs have enquiried about the possibility of signing the player in the January window.

The portuguese winger has been out of form at Old Trafford this year, struggling with the burden of filling Cristiano Ronaldo's legacy. Furthermore, the winger's comments in Portuguese newspaper (I), criticising his manager Sir Alex Ferguson have fueled suggestions that he will leave in January.

Somebody might want to whisper the words 'Jaap' and 'Stam' to Nani just to remind him what a world of pain he might have unleashed when he gets back to Manchester.

Now I'm sure Nani's agent or representative is going to come out with the old line that everything he's said has been lost in translation.

Yeah, we know. Portuguese player goes back to Portugal, speaks Portuguese to a Portuguese paper, canes his manager and somehow he's been mis-translated by the time it gets back to England.

Perhaps if it had been the odd line, I might have bought that. But Nani's basically written a book where he gives Fergie a cart-load because he doesn't think he's being handled properly.

He reckons that even when he has a brilliant game, he's always likely to be dropped.

Not only is Nani brave, he's also got a brilliant memory because - like most United fans I guess - I can't recall him EVER having a brilliant game.

Yes, I've seen him do his best Cristiano Ronaldo impression, taking all the free-kicks and set-pieces, standing like Ronaldo over the ball.

Then I seem to remember the ball sailing into the crowd behind the goal or well wide of the mark, his team-mates turning away in frustration and Sir Alex chalking up another reason why it's so easy to drop him.

It's a shame because Nani's got everything going for him. Old Trafford loves a winger, from Stevie Coppell, through Lee Sharpe, Andrei Kanchelskis, Ryan Giggs and Ronaldo, the fans all love to see a wideman in full flow.

Nani, though, hasn't cracked it. He's spent two years sitting behind Ronaldo, waiting for his chance but every time Fergie's put faith in him, he's flopped.

I'm betting he's one of those who sulks on the training pitch, too. Every time he's overlooked or left out, the chin will sink further into his chest, the shoulders will droop and it will be obvious he's got the raving hump.

Fair enough, nobody expects him to be delirious about not playing but there are ways and means of going about it.

Giggsy still believes he can play every game but the manager doesn't. Fair enough, it's Fergie's call, Giggsy just goes about proving to The Boss he might be wrong by his attitude, performance and character.

If that's not enough, then there's little more he can do. Nani, though, seems to think there's some God-given right that he plays whatever - and, if he doesn't, then it's purely Ferguson trying to rile him or mishandling him.

I'm loathe to criticise players because we've all been where Nani is but the moment he broke the code, which says everything stays in-house, he lost any sympathy I might have had.

He should shut his mouth, look around at brilliant professionals like Giggs and the way they handle disappointment and get on with convincing Fergie.

Nani, who turns 23 today, needs to toughen up mentally if he wants to make the grade at United.

When Nani broke into the Sporting CP first-team he was seen as the next big thing to come out of Portugal, after Cristiano Ronaldo that is. After his big move to Manchester United he has lived in the shadow of his more glorified countryman.

His start at new surroundings was good. He scored in the pre-season and it didn’t take very long to get on the score sheet in the Premier League, a beautiful 30 yard strike against Tottenham. Thanks to that and his trademark capoeira styled goal celebrations he quickly found a way into the Red Devis’ faithfuls hearts. It was a good season with a 4 goal return from 41 appearances.

He started his sophomore season at United well enough, but it quickly turned sour with the winger, who’s full name is Luís Carlos Almeida da Cunha, falling behind in the pecking order to his less fashionable team-mates. He improved on his goal tally with 6 goals, but in total he only managed 31 appearances, 13 in the league with only 7 of them from the starting line-up. Sir Alex Ferguson clearly felt Nani wasn’t quite ready for a more active role and that also started to disappoint the fans, as £17m for a substitute is way too much.

A lot of United fans have turned against him as whenever he gets a chance to showcase his skills, he often disappoints. There were hopes that with Cristiano Ronaldo leaving, Nani would be ready to make a step up and fill the FIFA World Player of the Year 2008 boots, but with extra competition arriving in Antonio Valencia and Gabriel Obertan, these hopes are fading fast, as the new signings have looked more ready to play for United, than Nani ever has.

Expectations might a little too high, but only the best is wanted from the players, who wear the famous red shirt. Nani and Ronaldo aren’t as similar players as people make them out to be and it might be a huge reason why Nani will never make it as a Manchester United regular.

Talent wise the players are quite equal, but what’s sets them apart, some might even say worlds apart, is the mental aspects. As we all remember Cristiano Ronaldo also struggled in his first season at United, but he quickly learned and adapted to play in the Premier League. Yeah, he fell to the ground often and complained to the officials, but he always got up in the end and got on with the game.

Determination is what Nani lacks. He doesn’t have that programmed to his mental system, to go and try again and again even if he does end up getting hurt. Sir Alex Ferguson was a avid complainer of the referees on the subject that Cristiano Ronaldo wasn’t getting enough protection from the referees, and with a reason, but the player himself never complained and sucked it up with ease. Nani doesn’t have that. There’s a foolproof way to get Nani out of a game. Just give him a few pops during a football match and you are assured the talented winger won’t cause any trouble for your team.

Well, we lined up thus: Foster - Gary Neville, Brown, Vidic, Rafael - Obertan, Gibson, Anderson, Park - Welbeck, Macheda.

Yes, no place for Nani though he was on the bench. Giggs is preferred for the big games, for league games; Obertan, Park and even Welbeck is preferred for Carling Cup and Champions League games. Where does that leave Nani who, after a good first season, has been steadily disappointing? On the brink of an exit from United, that's where.

I voiced my opinion many times here: Nani is a huge talent but his lack of intelligence is a major handicap. He just does not seem to possess the mental attributes required at the very top so he'll probably end up back in Portugal real soon... More optimist Reds would say he's gonna grab his chance, no reason to worry.

But there is because one question must be asked: where is that chance? Nani got his chance at the start of the season (remember, he started at the Community Shield and against Arsenal!) but after some initial promise he was soon back to square one with all the frustration he usually makes us endure when he's on the pitch. And he's been moving down the pecking order ever since: at Anfield Fergie threw him on to try and save the game; at Stamford Bridge Obertan and Owen were preferred.

He did not play a minute against Besiktas even though we were behind from minute 22 and he's supposed to be one of our more experienced and more penetrative players and it looks like he's not gonna start tonight. When will he, then? It's the Carling Cup after all, there isn't a competition that we could care less about but it looks like Fergie deems him unworthy of selection even for this one.

If Nani does not start tonight, he might as well start packing - because that would clearly mean that Valencia, Giggs, Park and Obertan are all ahead of him in the pecking order. A fifth winger for two places? We do not need that, especially when said winger is unable to produce quality performances when, admittedly rarely, called upon.

NANI is on his way out of Manchester United after being dumped from the first-team.

The winger has not played since SunSport reported his blast at Alex Ferguson over his alleged poor man-management last month.

Boss Fergie tried to play down talk of a rift but has not picked him since.

United will now listen to offers of around £10million for the Portuguese star.

Nani was out of United's squad for their 2-0 Carling Cup quarter-final win against Spurs on Tuesday.

He was also the only first-team squad member not to attend last Sunday's UNICEF dinner at Old Trafford, prior to missing out on Monday's training.

Nani, 23, moved to United from Sporting Lisbon for £17m in June 2007 and has hit 12 goals in 85 games.

He was seen as a natural successor to Cristiano Ronaldo but, after a solid start, he has gone backwards.

This season he has started just half of United's games and last appeared in the first XI on November 3, in the 3-3 draw with CSKA Moscow.

But his performance was so disappointing that Fergie hauled him off - and then dropped him from the squad for the 1-0 defeat at Chelsea five days later.

Nani then launched into Ferguson, revealed in SunSport on November 12.

Nani admitted: "Ferguson is very complicated.He can go from complimenting you to plain trashing you in minutes.

"No one escapes. Giggs and Neville suffer most, because they have more experience. It is 'F***' here and 'F***' there."

Ferguson hauled Nani into his office to explain his words.

The last person to talk about Fergie's rages in such a public manner was Jaap Stam and he was sold to Lazio for £16.5m.

UNITED have given striker Federico Macheda, 18, a new four-year contract.

Ferguson said: "We all recognise his fantastic talent and hope to see that develop in the coming years."

Manchester United winger Nani could soon be on his way home to Portugal, with the Red Devils apparently set to offer the player to Benfica as part of a potential deal to bring Angel di Maria to old Trafford.

The Guardian reports that Nani himself has asked his agent to look for clubs in Italy or Spain rather than Portugal, though, as he has no interest in going back to his homeland.

United boss Sir Alex Ferguson is believed to be very concerned about Nani's form and feels that there is little future for the Portuguese at the club.

Benfica are reportedly not keen to lose Argentine international Di Maria, widely viewed as one of the world's most promising forwards, unless one of his suitors coughs up £30 million.

Manchester City are also believed to be courting the 21-year-old Argentine.

Nani's inability to fill the void left by Cristiano Ronaldo at Manchester United has led to the Portugal international exploring the possibilities of a move to Spain or Italy in the January transfer window.

After an encouraging start to the season Nani's form has become such a concern for the United manager Sir Alex Ferguson that the former Sporting Lisbon player has been offered as bait in a possible cash-plus-player exchange with Benfica for the Argentina international Angel Di Maria.

Benfica informed the Premier League champions they did not want to lose their best player midway through the season unless one of his many suitors, Manchester City included, met a release clause of around £30m in his contract.

Nani is also reluctant to move back to Portugal but his agent, Jorges Mendes, has sounded out possible buyers in Spain and Italy.

Last season, when news broke out that Cristiano Ronaldo was leaving Old Trafford, Nani tipped himself as the man to fill the void left by the great no.7. But any chance of doing that has faded away. He is probably United fifth choice winger behind Valencia, Giggs, Obertan and Park. Don’t be surprised if he is out of the door come summer time.

Having said all that, I quite like Nani. I just doubt he’s good enough. He’s talented, but is sometimes a frustrating player to watch as he lacks tactical awareness and he is, well, all over the place. He can shoot, we all know that, and there’s nothing wrong with his passing, yet, unlike Ronaldo or the four other wingers listed he hasn’t ever really established himself.

We’ve seen the good Nani, the skilful and pacy midfielder who can beat defenders and hit the ball with venom but we’ve also seen the bad and the ugly, the lazy Nani who doesn’t track back enough nor does he offer enough support to the forwards when on the flanks and his impact is sometimes minimal. Inconsistency may be the word to describe the Portuguese international.

This may be the reason why Sir Alex has simply lost patience with him. And the fans. I don’t like to see usual first-teamers playing for the reserve side just because of bad performances but for the time being this may benefit him.

He’s been quiet in the last few weeks, not even making the bench in recent matches. He performed well in the Community Shieldugust back in A, but again he was inconsistent in the following matches and was dispatched to the reserves as a result of that. I’d think he still has a future at the club but he just needs to improve his game. Maybe a long, hard spell with the reserves will do him good and maybe he can win over the fans again. I’d advise him not to read the internet forums and messageboards right this moment…

Both Sir Alex and Nani claimed the Portuguese winger produced his best performance in a United shirt on Sunday as United beat Arsenal 3-1 at the Emirates Stadium.

A brilliant piece of skill and a cute, chipped cross led to United’s first (claimed by Nani but credited as an own goal) and it was Nani who laid on the Reds’ spectacular second. In fact, the Reds’ no.17 was at the heart of United’s most penetrating attacks time and time again.

“I played well,” Nani admitted. “I scored one goal, provided an assist and had a few other chances to score. It was a fantastic performance and I’m happy to help my team win this game.”

Whether or not Nani will be credited with the strike will probably be a matter for the Dubious Goals Panel. It will almost certainly rule on the goal, although most pundits on Sunday agreed it should go down as an own goal. Nani – surprise, surprise – had other ideas.

"Of course it's my goal," he said. "I put the ball into the goal so it should be my goal. I did everything to make it happen. I was very confident and the dribble [on the touchline to beat two Arsenal defenders] worked very well. I'm really happy to contribute to today's win."

Meanwhile,Sir Alex was thrilled with the 23-year-old's performance on Sunday and agreed it was his finest yet for the Reds.

“Nani's last three games have been absolutely first class and today was his best,” the United boss said. "He was absolutely outstanding.

“It’s difficult to say why we’re seeing his best form now, but maybe maturity is one reason. He’s a very shy boy and maybe his personality is getting stronger and better for dealing with playing for us every week. Today was an example of that maturity.

"Hopefully games like that will give him the confidence to know he’s a United player. When you talk to the other players, they all want him to play, they all think he’s fantastic."

Nani, who’s now made 50 league appearances for United, is confident he can produce more top performances as the Reds chase a record fourth consecutive league title.

“I’m working hard every day to be fit and ready to play. I’m very happy because I feel the confidence from my team-mates, the manager and the fans. I hope I can continue to show good form. I'm feeling better with every game I play."

Manchester United's breathtaking football, inspired by Nani and Wayne Rooney, left Arsenal with nowhere to hide.

Sometimes there are moments when the football is so exquisite it can have therapeutic qualities. There are so many issues surrounding Manchester United's finances right now that being a supporter of the club almost requires an economics degree to understand what is going on, but then there are the times when, temporarily at least, all that seems to matter is that moment of brilliance on the pitch.

This was the most exhilarating performance of the season from the champions, and it is becoming a habit on this ground when you think back to the devastating way they turned on the style in the Champions League semi-final in April. Sir Alex Ferguson's side played with width and penetration, flair and imagination, and they counter-attacked with a speed that was devastating.

In other words, they took on Arsenal at their own game and on their own manor – and they dismantled them so clinically there was a startling sense of deja vu from that encounter here nine months ago.

Arsenal will plead mitigating circumstances. They will cite the injury problems that have left them with so few attackers and, if they are desperate, they may linger on there being an element of good fortune attached to the opening goal. The Dubious Goals Panel – or maybe the Dubious Goalkeepers' Panel – will have to decide whether it should belong to Nani or be attributed to Manuel Almunia, though it would be harsh in the extreme if the Portuguese finds it chalked off given the way he had danced, shimmied and sidestepped his way past three Arsenal defenders. As flukes go it is difficult to think of one sugar-coated with so much skill, balance and poise.

We have been here before with Nani, of course, and the lesson of history is that nobody should start shouting from the rooftops that, finally, all that potential we have heard about will now be unleashed. What we can say for certain, however, is that when Nani plays like this there is no need for anybody at Old Trafford to continue mourning Cristiano Ronaldo's departure.

The problem is that these kind of performances have become the exception rather than the norm, and his renaissance over the past few weeks has been an unexpected one given the way he has laboured this season and, in the worst moments, been in danger of becoming the player the club's supporters distrust the most.

On this occasion, though, he seemed invigorated by the stardust he had sprinkled over the match with that 33rd-minute goal. It was a demonstration of wing play at its finest and, of all the concerns for Arsène Wenger, it must have been particularly galling to see the way his left-back, Gaël Clichy, could not cope.

Martin O'Neill, the Aston Villa manager, had made a point of identifying how Ashley Young menaced Clichy when the two sides met last week. Now it was Nani's turn to take the baton and he did so with a panache that adds to the lingering frustration that his talents can be so erratic.

The accolades for Nani stand out because of the frequency with which he has bewildered crowds but this was one of those rare days when, for United, everything seemed to click. Wayne Rooney, once again, looked at the point of maximum expression. Paul Scholes and Michael Carrick were spraying passes around as if there was a computer chip in their boots. Darren Fletcher, derided by Wenger as "anti-football" when these sides met at Old Trafford in August, proved his point.

It was football of butterfly-beauty at times, the pièce de résistance delivered in the form of an extraordinary break from one side of the pitch to the other for the second goal – Park Ji-sung to Rooney to Nani and then the first-time finish for a goal of breathtaking speed and quality. Rooney had sprinted 70 metres to take Nani's return pass and, once again, the mind flashed back to April and that superb breakaway goal Ronaldo scored, originating from an Arsenal corner, to make it 3‑0.

There have been plenty of times this season – justifiably – when spectators have watched United and come away thinking how much they miss Ronaldo's wow factor. But not today.

Sir Alex Ferguson has revealed that the rest of his Manchester united players all want to see Nani on the pitch every game.

The Portuguese winger has been in blistering form recently and put in another excellent performance today, contributing to both of Manchester United’s first half goals.

Ferguson told MUTV what the players think of Nani now that he’s matured into a consistent performer.

“It’s amazing, when you talk to the players they all want him to play, they all think he’s fantastic and now we get consistency and maturity out of him I think we’ve got a really good player.

“The boy has come back. He had an injury and he’s been freshened up and his last three games have been first class and today was his best.

Patience has proved to be a virtue for Sir Alex Ferguson following Nani's devastating performances for Manchester United over the past fortnight.

Brought to Old Trafford in 2007 for more money than it took to secure the services of Cristiano Ronaldo from the same Sporting Lisbon source, apart from a few sporadic performances and a couple of eye-catching goals, Nani has failed to convince.

Instead, Ferguson remained faithful to the 23-year-old. His reward has been staggering.

The Scot does think the adjustment to life at Old Trafford, that has been too much for some top quality players - Diego Forlan is a prime example - has just taken a long time for one of United's quiet men.

"I don't think he was overshadowed by Ronaldo. It was just a question of maturity," said Ferguson.

"Nani was young when he came here and he is quite a shy boy.

"Some players can adjust to coming to another country and joining Manchester United very easily.

"In the past, others have taken time. Patrice Evra and Nemanja Vidic came to us in the January but it was nearly a year before they hit the form we see in them now. Nani is much the same."

A recent spell on the sidelines may have caused the penny to drop.

If Nani had seen United labour in attack, he would have known pace, getting defenders onto the back foot and early crosses have been conspicuous by their absence.

He was capable of all three aspects. He just had not delivered them.

"Maybe watching has been the best thing for him," said Ferguson.

"He has shown maturity in his last three games, which we always felt was the key.

"The assets have always been there. What we have looked for is consistency.

"We are pleased for him because when he is in that kind of form he is a great addition for us and everyone saw the influence he had on the game on Sunday."

Birmingham - Manchester United gagal memenuhi targetnya membalas kekalahan dari Aston Villa. Diwarnai kartu merah untuk Nani, laga Villa kontra MU berkesudahan imbang 1-1.

MU datang ke Stadion Villa Park, Kamis (11/2/2010) dinihari WIB, dengan target membalas kekalahan 0-1 yang mereka derita di kandang sendiri, medio Desember tahun lalu.

Namun justru Villa yang unggul terlebih dahulu melalui tandukan Carlos Cuellar. MU akhirnya menyamakan skor menjadi 1-1 lewat gol bunuh diri bek Villa, James Collins.

Hasil ini membuat MU gagal melompati Chelsea di puncak klasemen Liga Inggris. Dengan nilai 57, The Red Devils tertinggal satu angka di belakang Chelsea yang juga tengah bermain menghadapi Everton.

Jalannya pertandingan
MU mengawali pertandingan dengan cukup apik. Di menit kedelapan, satu tendangan bebas Nani berbelok arah karena membentur bek Villa dan itu memaksa kiper Brad Friedel beraksi menepis bola keluar.

Lima menit kemudian, giliran Villa yang memetik peluang. Dari tendangan bebas, Cuellar menanduk bola sembari membelakangi gawang, tapi bola melayang di atas mistar MU.

Villa lalu memecah kebuntuan di menit 19. Tandukan Cuellar dari dalam kotak penalti menembus sudut kanan atas jala gawang MU yang dikiperi Edwin van der Sar, 1-0 buat Villa.

Friedel menyelamatkan gawang Villa dari serbuan Rooney di menit 75. Tendangan voli Roo dari luar kotak penalti hampir saja masuk andai Friedel tidak melompat dan men-tip bola ke udara.

Di menit terakhir pertandingan, Villa hampir saja bisa mencetak gol kemenangan. Sebuah tendangan bebas Gabriel Agbonlahor tidak dapat ditangkap dengan sempurna oleh Van Der Sar, tapi sebelum pemain Villa merebut bola, Van Der Sar sigap merebut bola lagi.

Skor 1-1 ini pun akhirnya bertahan hingga wasit meniup peluit panjang tanda berakhirnya pertandingan.

Melawat ke Villa Park, Kamis (11/2/2010) dinihari WIB, MU yang sangat mengagendakan tiga angka untuk dapat mencuri peluang menggeser Chelsea di puncak klasemen harus menerima kenyataan hasil seri 1-1.

Masing-masing satu gol bagi kedua kubu tersebut memang sudah tercipta ketika Nani dikeluarkan ketika saat berjalan belum genap setengah jam. Namun insiden itu tetap saja dituding menjadi kambing hitam dari tertahannya 'Setan Merah' yang sebelumnya membukukan empat kemenangan meyakinkan secara beruntun.

Hal tersebut tidak lepas dari dininya waktu kartu merah dikeluarkan. Selama satu jam lebih bermain dengan 10 pemain jelas sangat menyulitkan MU.

Manchester United winger Nani has sets his sights on the Premier League and Champions League double after missing out at Wembley.

The Portugal international was forced to sit out United's Carling Cup final triumph against Aston Villa after being sent off in the Premier League match against Martin O'Neill's side.

The 23-year-old returned to the side in the win over Wolves and was in fine form in the rout of AC Milan in midweek.

'It could be a fantastic season for me and I am working hard for that,' he told the Manchester Evening News.

'Villa was a big disappointment for me. I was a bit down after that. But I am working hard again and I hope I can get more experience every game and help the team like I did.

'I want to get my form back quickly and consistently. That is the most important thing for me at the moment.

Middlesbrough rejected the chance to sign Nani for £3.5million before he signed for Manchester United.

Football agent Barry Silkman has revealed that Boro could have signed the winger eight months before he went to Old Trafford.

Silkman offered the Sporting Lisbon winger to then Boro boss Gareth Southgate, but he turned down the proposal.

Nani then signed for United the following summer, for a fee believed to be in the region of £17m.

Silkman told Sport.co.uk: 'Recently, the biggest one I have missed out on, I saw a player in Portugal a few years ago called Nani.

'I tried to do a deal with Middlesbrough who I was very close to at the time; I did a lot of deals when Steve McClaren was manager.

'I offered Nani to Middlesbrough and Gareth Southgate didn’t fancy him. He was £3.5million.'

'He went to Manchester United for £17m and it was only eight or nine months later, that’s all it was.

'Manchester United’s chief executive David Gill actually phoned Middlesbrough chief executive Keith Lamb to ask him if that story was true! And Keith Lamb said yeah it is.'

Nani has struggled badly at times while at United, but has improved greatly in recent months.

He was brilliant during United's 3-1 victory over fellow title chasers Arsenal in January.

The 24 year-old appeared to have committed the cardinal sin at United of publicly challenging Sir Alex Ferguson's authority when he criticised his manager for "breaking my confidence" in an interview with a Portuguese magazine last November.

A period out of the team was the result of Nani voicing his frustrations and, with injury then restricting his availability, combined with the emergence of Antonio Valencia and Gabriel Obertan, his days at United seemed numbered.

But Nani has enjoyed a renaissance in recent weeks. His confidence has returned and Old Trafford no longer rings out to groans when he receives the ball with his luminous yellow boots.

He is now realising the potential that prompted Ferguson to invest £17 million in his talents three years ago and, finally, as assistant manager Mike Phelan suggested last month, the penny has dropped.

Nani said: "When you come to Manchester United, you have to learn about what it means and what it takes to succeed here.

"A couple of years ago, I was only thinking about playing for myself and just playing to enjoy my football.

"But now, I know that I can't play like that because it is all about winning trophies for the team rather than individual success.

"At United, you have to play together, you have to think together, you have to do everything together. I have learned a lot about that and that's why I have changed.

"This club is good at making players grow up and learn to be a man, to be a player.

"That happened to me a couple of months ago, when I began to think more about the team and what it means to play for United. Now, I'm feeling very happy and strong."

Juventus were keen to lure Nani away from United in January and the Italians are expected to follow up their interest in the player in the summer.

The prospects of Ferguson allowing Nani to leave, however, are receding with each game. He is expected to start for the fourth successive game against Liverpool ton Sunday and the former Sporting Lisbon youngster admits he has no desire to leave Old Trafford.

Nani, speaking at the launch of United's partnership with Turkish Airlines, said: "This is my third year here and I believe I am doing well now. I want to do more and more and show that I am deserving of my place at this club.

"Did I want to leave? No, I never thought like that. I have always been strong in my head and confident in my ability as a player and I have always had confidence about being a United player, ever since I came to the club."

The shyness that Ferguson claimed was a factor in Nani's delayed progress is no longer an issue in the player's mind.

He said: "I don't think I'm a shy person. Maybe I am shy with the manager because I respect him a lot."

The Champions League is an accurate barometer of Nani's emergence as a force for United.

This season, the 22-year-old has a 100 per cent appearance record in the knockout rounds.

The Portuguese international was a starting cert in Sir Alex Ferguson's XI for the ties against AC Milan.

He followed that up with a place in Fergie's line-up in Germany last Tuesday against Bayern Munich.

Having missed out on a place against Chelsea on Saturday but impressing as a sub when he came on, he will almost certainly start against the Germans tomorrow night as the Reds bid to overturn a 2-1 first leg deficit book their place in the last four.

Last season as the European campaign reached the key knockout stages, Nani was little more than a fringe player.

Of the seven Champions League matches from February 2009 onwards - against Inter Milan, Porto, Arsenal and Barcelona - he didn't start a single game.

His only appearance in those matches was a 22-minute cameo as a sub for Dimitar Berbatov in Portugal against Porto. That pointer to his status in the Reds squad this season improved with the departure of Cristiano Ronaldo, but injury set him back.

Now Nani is a key figure in Fergie's plans, a fact rubber-stamped by his new four-year Old Trafford contract.

And now the winger is looking further ahead and has plans to become a member of football's world elite.

"I'm very pleased with how things have gone. When you are doing well you wake up every day for training feeling happy and confident and that's what has happened in the last few months, and I'm working hard every day to keep improving," said the winger.

"The first half of the season was frustrating. I didn't feel good during that time because I had a couple of injuries and wasn't playing a lot.

"But the manager and my team-mates helped me and I'm enjoying things now and want to stay here for many years.

"I feel I have changed a lot. I have a better understanding of a lot of things - opposition teams, the way the game is played over here, the ambitions we have and my quality is better on the pitch.

"The team have helped me a lot, particularly the experienced players and now I am a bit older I have more experience myself, which has given me confidence.

"I always thought things would come good for me. I'm confident in my ability, I had a chat with the manager, and he told me he believed in my quality and that I am an important part of the team. He gave me my chance and since then I have done well.

"I want to become one of the best players in the world and I will keep working hard to achieve that.

"I want to keep working hard to improve everything. I have many ambitions to do more and more for this great club and for myself. I hope to score more goals, provide more assists and help us win trophies. It's great to know the club have confidence in me and I am delighted to have signed for another four years," he said.

EXCLUSIVE Interview With Nani… Shirt Number, The Future and Winning The League

The Republik of Mancunia teamed up with Nike last week in support of their Tear Up The Pitch event and got to spend some time with Manchester United winger Nani.

Nani had just been doing a photoshoot for Nike for the hour or so previous to our chat and probably the last thing he wanted to do was sit down with a fan. You don’t often see him in the press giving interviews so I was intrigued to see what he was all about. Having known little about him beforehand, it would be easy to assume that, being a young fella playing for Manchester United, he might be a bit arrogant. But he came across as very shy and even nervous. The longer we spoke, the more he opened up and relaxed he became, with him speaking much better English than I had imagined.

The fans appreciation of Nani is increasing and that is down to a change in attitude in the winger. His potential has always been there for us to see but now we are seeing a big change in his performances on the pitch. Last month, Nani acknowledged the change in himself, with him claiming he now understands what it means to be a United player.

So in Salford, with a load of questions from RoM readers, a conversation with Nani took place.

RoM: Before we start, I would just like to commend you on your great recent form. The fans have noticed a real turn around in your performances and that’s great to see. How do you feel now that you have claimed a place in our starting XI?

Nani: It makes me feel very proud. This is my job and I work hard every day. I’m playing well on the training ground and that’s why I play every week in the games. Of course, I am so happy with playing and I want to improve every week.

RoM: Some might say how well you play can be effected by which position you are playing, given that you are able to play on the left and the right wing. Antonio Valencia always plays on the right but is that a position you would prefer?

Nani: It doesn’t matter to me. I have to play on both sides and all I want to do is help my team to win.

RoM: Is there any particular aspect of your game you feel like you need to focus on improving?

Nani: I want to score more goals. We need more players to score goals because if you’ve got just one player scoring and he doesn’t score then that is bad for the team.

RoM: Michael Owen currently wears our number seven shirt and it is something associated with some of the best players to have ever played for United. Is this a shirt you would one day like to have?

Nani: I’m so happy with my shirt. I’ve got seven as well but I have two numbers! I am happy with my shirt number though, I think it brings me luck.

RoM: So you’ll stick it out with number seventeen for the rest of your United career then? How long do you see yourself staying at the club for?

Nani: I’m so happy at this club. Of course, when you play and everything is going right it makes you want to stay for many years. I want to become part of a history of this club.

RoM: Talking about the history of the club, is it something you are made aware of or take much interest in when signing for United?

Nani: Of course. I think the history of this club is very important. It can help players make the decision to come here. You hear a lot about the old players and people want to play for us to become like them.

RoM: Can you remember much about your first day at United?

Nani: I didn’t see a lot. I went for my medical tests and that was fine. It was very exciting though.

RoM: Which players are your closest friends at the club?

Nani: There are a few players I’m closer to but everyone gets on well and has a nice relationship with each other. We like to have a joke with each other and we’re a happy team. Every day we joke around with each other. We are very much together.

RoM: Are there any players in particular you would like to see United bring in this summer?

Nani: Just one player? It would be nice if the manager brought one friend from Sporting Lisbon. That would be fantastic for me. Maybe Miguel Veloso. He would be good.

RoM: Are you looking forward to the World Cup?

Nani: Very much.

RoM: Do you fancy your chances?

Nani: I don’t know if we’ll win but I have a lot of confidence that we’ll do well. We’ve got a very good team and players who can do something special for us.

RoM: And finally, do you think we’re going to win the league this year?

Nani: I really hope so, yeh.

RoM: Let’s keep it going with a win against Spurs, eh? Thanks for your time.

Nani came across as a genuinely nice guy. There was none of the flashy stuff where he was concerned. His ‘entourage’ consisted of his bird and a mate, he was happy to talk and was earnest in his answers.

MU sampai pekan ini masih menempati posisi 2 klasemen sementara dengan 76 poin. Sedangkan Chelsea yang menempati posisi puncak klasemen mengoleksi 77 poin.

Dengan selisih satu poin, masih terbuka lebar kesempatan bagi Nani cs untuk menggusur Chelsea di puncak klasemen. Apalagi, Chelsea dan MU sama-sama menyisakan tiga pertandingan.

Manchester - Kemenangan 3-1 yang diraih Manchester United atas Tottenham Hotspur diwarnai oleh penampilan gemilang Nani. Winger asal Portugal itu pun mendapatkan pujian dari pelatih dan rekan setim.

Ia kemudian mengawali lahirnya gol ketiga MU. Tusukannya dari sisi kiri terpaksa diberhentikan oleh Wilson Palacios dengan adu badan di dalam kotak penalti. Nani terjatuh dan wasit memberikan tendangan titik putih untuk 'Setan Merah'

Eksekusi yang dilakukan Ryan Giggs pun tanpa cela. Gelandang asal Wales ini menyempurnakan kemenangan MU menjadi 3-1. Sir Alex Ferguson jelas senang dengan kemenangan ini dan secara khusus ia menggarisbawahi penampilan Nani.

"Saya harus bilang penyelesaian akhirnya sungguh brilian. Keputusannya untuk mencoba melakukan hal tersebut, dan pada saat-saat pertandingan memasuki waktu seperti itu, menunjukkan betapa beraninya dia," ujar Sir Alex di situs resmi klub.

"Tak banyak pemain biasanya mencoba melakukan hal itu, apalagi dari sudut sempit. Fantastis, nilai 10 dari 10 karena melakukannya," lanjutnya lagi.

Wayne Rooney isn't the only player who's enjoyed his best season in a United shirt in 2009/10.

Nani, instrumental in the Reds' win over Tottenham last weekend, has been in tip-top form this term, particularly since the turn of the year.

He's found the net three times in his last two Old Trafford outings, but did you know those goals (one against Tottenham, two against Bayern Munich) were the winger’s first for United since August? Probably not. But it’s precisely because Nani’s all-round contribution was so significant that his lack of goals went largely unnoticed.

The well-held view that he's producing his best form since signing from Sporting Lisbon in 2007 is borne out in the statistics above, which show the impact the winger has had when he's taken to the pitch (and, perhaps more tellingly, when he doesn’t). For instance, United in 2009/10 win more often, score more goals and lose far fewer games when Nani plays. And of the 11 defeats United have suffered this season, only one has come when Nani started. Even then – away to Bayern Munich – he won the free-kick and whipped in the resulting cross from which Wayne Rooney scored.

His service from wide areas has improved markedly in 2009/10. In the Premier League alone he has 10 assists to his name, a figure that ignores the part he played in forcing own goals against Arsenal and Portsmouth (two). Add those to the tally and then only Cesc Fabregas and Frank Lampard have created more goals in the league this season.

In Europe, too, Nani was inspirational, playing key roles in goals scored away from home at Besiktas, CSKA Moscow, Wolfsburg and Bayern Munich... and then there was the Bayern brace he bagged at Old Trafford. So, although goals may not have flown from his boots at regular intervals across the season, the sparks certainly have.

United’s match-winner at Sunderland insists the Reds can still lift the Barclays Premier League trophy, even though Chelsea have a huge advantage heading into the final day of the season.

Nani admitted United felt desperately disappointed after so narrowly missing out on the Barclays Premier League title, but he is adamant that the Reds will be back stronger and even more determined to win the trophy back in 2010/11.

We did so well and it was quite equal between ourselves and Chelsea. You could say we deserved to win the title as well. But we have to forget about this and think about next season.

Hmm.. Musim ini nani mengawalinya dengan sangat buruk, tapi dia tampaknya belajar dari kesalahan dan berjuang mati-matian. Portugal winger Nani believes he has developed as a player going into the summer's World Cup finals in South Africa.

The former Sporting Lisbon star arrived at Manchester United in 2007 but had struggled to make a regular impact, often finding himself on the fringes of Sir Alex Ferguson's starting XI.

But the 23-year-old believes that has changed this season after making 19 starts and four substitute appearances during his side's unsuccessful Premier League title challenge.

And Nani says missing out on the Premier League crown on the final day of the season means he is in a good position to overcome that heartbreak by helping his Portugal team instead.
Mature and experienced

He said: "It was a pain not to win the Premier League with United but personally I am satisfied with the level of my season.

"I arrive like a more mature player and more experienced. This could be important for my work with Portugal in the World Cup.

"The World Cup is not easy but we are obliged to improve our performance in comparison with Euro 2008.

"I have much more morale and I am prepared for any challenge in South Africa. My dreams passed me by but it is important to be men in this team."

Nani's place in the Portugal XI is by no means guaranteed, with the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Deco and Simao all vying for places on the flanks.

The United man hopes he can force his way into Carlos Queiroz's plans, though, and believes that the quality of his team extends beyond the realms of former Old Trafford team-mate Ronaldo.

Queiroz's side face a difficult task in progressing to the knockout stages, with Brazil, North Korea and first Ivory Coast their opposition in Group G.

Winger ruled out of finals with shoulder problem.

Portugal have suffered a blow with the news that Nani has been ruled out of the World Cup finals through injury.

The Manchester United winger has been forced to miss the showpiece event in South Africa after picking up a shoulder injury in training last week.

It was thought the injury was not too serious, but scans have shown the problem to be worse than first feared.

"After tests we conclude he is unfit to participate in the World Cup," read a statement from the Portuguese Football Federation.

Nani is the second United player forced to miss the finals after England defender Rio Ferdinand picked up a knee ligament problem in training.

Nani admits he is feeling 'rage and bitterness' after being ruled out of Portugal's World Cup campaign with a shoulder injury.

The Manchester United winger had been struggling with the problem in the build-up to the tournament, but was expected to be fit for Portugal's Group G fixtures.

However, scans showed the injury to be worse than previously expected, leaving Nani to be replaced by Ruben Amorim in Carlos Queiroz's squad.

The 23-year-old has returned to Portugal to recover from the setback and he expressed his devastation at being forced to sit out the World Cup finals.
Big nightmare

"I have left the Portugal squad in South Africa because I am no longer necessary there," Nani told Gestifute.

"I do not have words to explain my feelings at the moment I learned of the injury.

"For me, it was an unexpected situation and a big nightmare that I will never forget.

"After the injury, my team-mates asked me to stay, but I am a footballer and if I could not help the squad then the best solution is to return to Portugal to start my physical recuperation.

"My feelings are those of pain, rage, sadness and bitterness, but this is football."

What’s Going On With Nani Then? – Drugs? Fall Out? Injury?

On June 6th, Nani picked up a shoulder injury in training which wasn’t believed to be serious. “I feel better already,” the player said before setting off for South Africa. His only concern was whether he would be ready to play in the friendly against Mozambique.

However, two days later, it was confirmed that the injury was in fact so bad that he was no longer able to compete in the World Cup. Bear in mind this was a whole week before Portugal’s opening game, two weeks before Portugal’s second game and 17 days before their final group stage match. It was therefore assumed in the press that the injury had to be really serious, otherwise the manager would take a gamble on his returning fitness. Nani had a great second half to the season for United so this World Cup had come just at the right time for him.

Nani was replaced by Benfica’s Ruben Amorim, a 25-year-old central midfielder who started just 10 of his 24 league appearances last season as he struggles to hold down a first team place, who has never represented his country:thumbdown:. Considering Portugal were so severely lacking in options, it seemed to point to the fact Nani must have really hurt himself and be out for the long term for him to be removed from the squad.

However, upon returning from South Africa, our winger claimed: “I will be fine in a week.” If that really is the case, Nani would have only missed Portugal’s opening game against the Ivory Coast and would have been available for the remaining two group stage games, as well as any possible further matches in the competition.

Unsurprisingly, tongues started wagging, with the media and fans trying to explain why on earth one of Portugal’s best players had been sent home when apparently not very injured at all. Nani had spoken of his “bitterness” and “rage” at having to leave South Africa, which only added to the speculation. Some rumours claimed he had failed a random drugs test whilst others claimed he had fallen out with Carlos Queiroz, although both whispers have been denied today.

“The rumours going around are without foundation,” said Luis Horta, the head of anti-doping authority in Portugal.

The vice-president of the Portuguese federation was equally as baffled as to where the talk had originated from.

“There is no attempting to hide anything, there was only the hope that he could have recovered,” said Amandio de Carvalho.

Carlos Queiroz has today talked about the fuss surrounding Nani, claiming that quite frankly, Portugal have more important things to worry about.

“Tomorrow, we are going to be playing the Ivory Coast in our first game in the World Cup,” said Queiroz. “If Nani is ready in four days, that’s wonderful, but the most important thing is for us to focus on our goal tomorrow. So, with all due respect to Nani, that is what we are focusing on.”:-??

So, what’s gone on here? My interpretation would be something like this: Nani is massively pissed off at being replaced by a nobody in the World Cup team, particularly given how hard he has worked to get there and how confident he is in his own ability to shine. He will have believed he could recover faster than the doctors were telling him would, so upon returning from his 16 hour journey, thoroughly pissed off, claimed he would be available in a week. This of course lead to sensationalised rumours because people were trying to make sense of a situation that didn’t make much sense at all.

It’s a desperately disappointing situation for him and we of course do wish him a speedy recovery. Although, it is good to note that he’s got his club head on him now.

“I want to recover well and start the season with my club, have a good pre-season and be in good form for the start of the season in England,” Nani said today. Good lad.

Sama Iz... Begitu baca berita di atas aku juga mikir apakah alasan takut ketahuan gagal tes narkoba (entah bener atau nggak) yang jadi alasannya. Awalnya aku pikir kenapa dia nggak mau balik ke MU gara2 masih ingin nemeni timnas portugal selama piala dunia dan itu bisa diterima juga. Tapi saat muncul penyataan dari dia klo dia bisa pulih "hanya" dalam 1 minggu jadi curiga juga kenapa hanya cedera ringan kok nggak dibawa ke afsel, dan saat berita gagal tes doping ini muncul rasanya semua alurnya jadi nyambung.

Nggak mau berprasangka buruk tapi Nani emang musti njelasin. Klo perlu dia ngajuin buat di tes doping, klo dia bersih pasti nggak takut.

Nani caused quite a stir this week after claiming that he would be fit in a week, despite being sent home from the World Cup. If he was to return to fitness so soon, it would be he only missed one group stage game, therefore begging the question why Portugal had replaced him in the squad.

Ga lolos tes doping bukan berati dia pake obat" penambah stamina. Banyak hal yg bisa buat seorang atlit gagal test doping.

Contoh : Dia lagi flu/batuk/sakit ga enak badan trus minum obat sembarangan, bisa jd itu nimbulin semcam kadar (bs testoteron/steroid lah) di dalam tubuh atlit naik..dan pas dia test doping dinyatakan positif...gt cuma ambil contoh yg simpel aja sih ini....hehehe
