We’re surprised that Paul Scholes testimonial was a football match. If the event had truly been in keeping with his well-known reticence to take the spotlight, a celebration of his career should have taken place in the back room of a small pub in Oldham, involved a few close friends and team-mates and possibly a game of darts.

If they were feeling frisky enough.
But Paul Scholes’ reputation as a player would allow for nothing less than an Old Trafford extravaganza featuring some of the biggest names in football, which is exactly what took place on Friday evening. A New York Cosmos invitational team boasting the likes of Fabio Cannavaro, Gary Neville, Patrick Viera and Michel Salgado were battered 6-0 by a surprisingly strong United line-up (considering Sunday’s Community Shield tie vs. Manchester City) at the Theatre of Dreams, the key moment inevitably coming via an edge of the box strike after eight minutes by… Paul Scholes.

It wasn’t necessary. Despite the presence of Pele and Eric Cantona (who received one of the most rapturous receptions of the evening), a suitably humble Scholesy was the centre of the United faithful’s standing ovation. Afterwards he even offered a self-deprecating ‘I hope I gave them a few decent memories’ statement to all his fans, friends and family.

Scholes enters talks over United coaching role

Paul Scholes will determine his new role at Manchester United in talks with manager Sir Alex Ferguson this week.

The former midfielder, who retired from playing at the end of last season and had a testimonial at Old Trafford earlier this month, has already been offered a place on coaching staff.

But the job description will be detailed and finalised on Scholes return from a family holiday.

Ferguson said: “Paul will be back this week and we’ll have talks. But he’ll be coaching with us.”

Ryan Giggs masih mengharapkan eksistensi mantan rekan timnya di Manchester United, Paul Scholes. Giggs mengklaim sosok pria asal Inggris tersebut tak tergantikan di lini tengah ‘Setan Merah’.

Setelah 17 tahun berkiprah di Old Trafford, Scholes memutuskan pensiun usai mengantarkan MU menjuarai Liga Primer musim 2010/2011. Meski seorang pemain baru menempati posisi Scholes, namun menurut Giggs, pribadi dan kemampuan yang dimiliki pria 36 tahun itu tak ada tandingannya.

“Akankah Anda mendapatkan Paul Scholes yang lain? Tidak akan pernah. Tidak dalam sejuta tahun ke depan. Mendapatkan seseorang seperti itu memang mustahil, tapi kami harus tetap berevolusi. Itulah Manchester United,” ujar Giggs seperti dilansir Givemefootball, Kamis 15 September 2011.

Lebih lanjut, Giggs mengakui bahwa Scholes merupakan rekan tim favoritnya. Winger asal Wales tersebut sempat tak percaya dengan keputusan Scholes mengakhiri kariernya begitu cepat.

“Lima tahun lalu, jika Anda berbicara tentang rencana melatih pada Scholesy, dia akan mengatakan ‘tidak ada kesempatan’. Tapi akhirnya saat dia memutuskan pensiun, maka Anda bisa melihat perubahannya,” tutur Giggs.

“Dia adalah pemain cerdas dan dihormati para pemain muda. Bayangkan saja saat Paul mengatakan apa yang harus Anda lakukan? Jika Anda tidak mengerti, maka dia tak segan memperagakannya. Dia bisa melakukan apapun dengan bola,” kenang pria 37 tahun tersebut.

Premier League - Scholes: England stars pampered

Former England midfielder Paul Scholes feels the country's "pampered" players have no chance of winning a major trophy in the near future.

And the ex-Manchester United player also hit out at managers who he believes go for the national team job for the money. Scholes made his comments in an unusually outspoken interview with United fanzine Red News.

"The England team these days are treated like world superstars from what they do at club level," he said. "I don't think that helps when they go to England (duty) because they're all mollycoddled and pampered."

He added: "They're treated like they're world champions before actually being a successful team to do that.

"The England manager changes that often there can never be that stability and I think managers just go out for the England job for the money these days."

England's only major trophy came on home soil in the 1966 World Cup and, asked if he could see any prospect of an end to the drought, Scholes continued: "You would always like to say 'yes' but at the minute, no I can't.

"You can go over the last four or five tournaments - England may have got to a couple of quarter-finals, but there's nothing else to show for it and South Africa was a complete disaster."

In fact, I'd go so far as to say that for a long time now he has been my footballing hero. Even in the last months leading up to his retirement, Paul was a master, a sensational performer, one of the finest in the world.

He always possessed that indefinable, special ingredient that goes into the making of a star. Yet through all the years, with all the success he has enjoyed, he has remained the same lovely, unassuming individual.

Scholes the next United boss but one?

This week, I found myself approaching an assignment with the giddy excitement of a 10-year-old. I was to meet someone who, to my mind, encapsulates all that is admirable about the game of football.

Paul Scholes has just published his autobiography and to launch it the formerly reticent one was required to undertake a round of interviews that redefined the term extensive. If not quite at Hollywood levels - the actress Uma Thurman was once obliged by the terms of her contract to sit through 1800 one-on-one media interviews in a fortnight in order to promote a film - the ginger genius was still in the midst of a punishing schedule when I was granted my 15 minutes with him.

Because of his previous reticence, Scholes was long ago written off by many as inarticulate, boring and lacking a sense of humour. As it transpires, he is none of those things.

Despite being bombarded with interest, despite being dozens of times asked the same questions (about Carlos Tevez and his own refusal to play in a game back in 2001) he was cheerful, sharp-witted and interesting. Funny too. He has a noticeable twinkle of amusement behind his eyes, a sense, no doubt, of the ridiculous circus into which he had unwittingly been plunged. He gave the impression that - given a choice - he would rather stick his head in a bucket of custard and gargle the national anthem than be subjected to six hours in a box at Old Trafford meeting a succession of gibbering fools. But being Scholes, he was prepared to do it to make the book work. And being a decent guy, he was not going to take out his frustrations on any of those asking the said stupid questions.

As it happens, even in a quarter of an hour, even in the midst of being obliged to do precisely what he least likes doing, there were hints that Scholes could be as gifted a commentator and analyst of the game as he was a player. Not that you would necessarily glean it from the pages of Paul Scholes: My Story, as bland and uninspired a volume as ever can have been extracted from a figure as interesting as this. But the fact is Scholes is a fascinating character.

Of course, there may have been something in his reputation that make his words seem so intriguing. This, after all, is the most technically gifted English footballer of his generation, a superb athlete, whose abilities on the pitch made everyone from Zinedine Zidane to Andres Iniesta look on in envy. This was a player who sang through his feet. Maybe whatever he had to say would be freighted with additional weight. But nonetheless his observations on the psychology of being stuck on the bench, on the selfishness of the top footballer, on the huge difference between trying to influence a result from the middle of the park and from the technical area, spoke of a fresh and different outlook. Take this about the sense of control he experienced when playing at the height of his powers:

"Being at your peak was a feeling that is hard to describe," he said. "Being 28, 29 here [at Old Trafford], going out almost knowing you are going to score goals, play well, you think you're invincible. When you got older, you felt different. It was almost as if anything could happen, you worried you might have a nightmare, that you'd be responsible for a right cock-up, there was no control. At your peak, you think you can do anything. When you get older it drifts from you, you lose that sense of certainty."

He is currently engaged on an apprenticeship as a coach in the United system, watching and learning. It's an informal education, a process taking in the reserves and the youth team, and a seat in the stands for every first-team game. The first problem he has encountered is a gap between the instinctive knowing what to do that he experienced when a player, and the need to articulate what he thinks should be done that is the lot of the coach. That, he says, is the hardest breach to overcome, the transition from the feet to the mouth.

But he is determined to do so. And my sense is, coaching is where his future lies. The media route taken by his old colleague, the increasingly sure-footed Gary Neville, holds little appeal. Besides, unlike some of his former youth team mates at United (mentioning no names, Robbie Savage) the sound of his own voice is not something he finds remotely appealing.

I suspect, given his sharp eye, his innate footballing intelligence and his determination to succeed at whatever he does, a future in a leading dug-out is inevitable.

The next United boss? Probably not. But the one after that is not a ridiculous proposition.

Paul Scholes: Manchester United's quiet man breaks cover
Paul Scholes was never one to court publicity but this week spoke out in support of Carlos Tevez. Retirement is certainly bringing out another side of the former midfielder

The next day Paul Scholes's 85-year-old agent, Harry Swales, picks up the phone to discuss his client's enduring appeal. Swales, who wears extravagant mutton chop whiskers and is known as an "old-school" representative, has enjoyed a quiet life with the deal-phobic Scholes but wouldn't want it any other way.

"He's always been a player who wanted to play and train hard and when he'd finished go home to his family," said Swales, the day after Scholes had launched his memoirs, at Old Trafford. "All he wanted to do was what he did. He just wanted to pick up his kids from school. His satisfaction came from training and being associated with great players and a great manager. The book is the first thing he really did and he's enjoying it because he can express himself. It's not an autobiography, it's a picture story and he likes it that way."

So no commercial tie-ups at all, then? "The offers didn't come because they knew it was Paul."

Just when he thought he was safe, along came a scandal, a talking point Scholes was obliged to comment on. By a cosmic twist the shyest of all great English players ("my hero", Sir Bobby Charlton calls him) is forced to recall the day he refused to play in a Carling Cup game at Arsenal in a brief fit of pique at Sir Alex Ferguson. The context was Carlos Tevez's wildcat industrial action during the Bayern Munich-Manchester City Champions League fixture on Tuesday night.

Scholes says: "As soon as this came up with Tevez I thought: 'Oh ****. It's not that I thought I was going to get asked about it, it's just something I regret doing.'"

But more of that later. Scholes is now two weeks into a loose coaching role with the Manchester United reserves and has news to impart. In a BBC interview last week Ferguson picked out Paul Pogba, Ryan Tunnicliffe and Will Keane as United starlets. Scholes endorses those picks and adds a fourth. "Three excellent players who you'd hope will get a chance in the first team," he says of the manager's selections. "Tunnicliffe's gone down to Peterborough [on loan] and has done OK down there. Pogba has got amazing talent. He's such a big lad for his age. The physique he's got is unbelievable.

"I think Will Keane has the capability to be a top-class centre-forward. He's one of the lads I've been working with. He was always someone I liked when I was watching the youth teams. He's just got a presence about him, he's a strong lad and has great feet – the ability to strike a ball. The kind of things [Ruud] Van Nistelrooy had. The first time I saw him I thought 'Jesus Christ' because he was smashing balls in from anywhere. Keane has the potential to do that.

"Any others? Larnell Cole. He looks a great prospect. He's very small but he's a very clever footballer. He's similar to Shaun Wright-Phillips but a player who can play inside a bit better than Shaun. Shaun's an out and out wide man but Larnell can play in a three in midfield."

For United's youngsters there could be no greater stimulus than being coaxed by the ginger embodiment of the club's ethos. But there is no guarantee he will keep the tracksuit, the warm coat for cold midweek nights at Rochdale and Bury. "There's no particular job I'm doing, I'm just helping out here and there," Scholes says. "I haven't really done any coaching as such, I've just been having individual words with players and going to the reserve games, Warren Joyce [the reserve team coach] is helping me a lot. We've had two games and two wins so I can't complain.

"I'm not sure yet. I want to find out whether I really have the desire to do it. It might be three or four months before I know. If I go into something I want to be good at it. I don't want to be a bit-part in something. It's totally different talking to a group of players."

For Scholes, not playing has painful undertones. He admits to struggling in his later years with a cameo role and knew it was time to escape that torment last May, at 36. Inevitably now he is adjusting to the life of a spectator. "It took three or four months for me to miss playing again. I knew I wasn't going to be playing in the Champions League final [at Wembley, against Barcelona]. You know it's time to go when you're not even under consideration for selection, when you'll do well to get on the bench. You want to think you're good enough to start in a game like that."

Scanning the changes since he, Gary Neville and Edwin van der Sar stepped back, he says: "The club just rolls on." In this phase, to a faster, younger, more attacking style than last season, when United were sometimes more mechanical than the best sides Scholes graced in 552 games, in which he scored 150 times.

"This is such a young and vibrant, quick team. We look like we're going to score goals all the time. We look like we'll concede them a bit too often as well. I like the attitude that we're just going to score more goals than they do. It's not always great for your back lads and your keeper but we go through games looking like we could score five or six. To do that against Arsenal [in the 8-2 game] is just a pleasure to play for a striker or an attacking midfielder."

Scholes says the impact made by Ashley Young and Phil Jones is easily explainable: "The biggest thing is that they're playing with better players – the best in England. We've won the leagues to prove that. I don't think there's any rocket science to the way we play, it's just good attacking football. It's not complicated or difficult to understand. When you get clever players like Ashley or Phil Jones it's no problem for them to slot into the team."

The hole left by his own retirement is, he says, too often fussed over and inflated. "I think people are too obsessed with the idea of a replacement. They always talk about replacing a player who scored 15 goals a season. For the last five years I was never that type of player, especially for the last two years, when I was probably only playing 25-30 games a year."

Nor does he accept that United could still need a specialist defensive midfielder to support the forward play and protect the marauding Jones: "It's a position clubs have become obsessed with. I always feel that if you've got two in midfield and one goes forward the other one stays, it's as simple as that.

"That's the way we played for a long time. Since [Claude] Makelele made himself famous in that position everyone wants a Makelele. There is a warm word, though, for Tom Cleverley, the young midfielder who has staked the strongest claim to Scholes's jersey: "Going to Wigan last year helped him a lot. At the start of the year the manager just gave him his head, his four or five games, and he's been fantastic, a breath of fresh air. When he came on in the Community Shield he changed the game and he went on from there. It's just a shame he got that injury when he did."

The best reason to connect Tevez and Scholes is not to categorise them both as Bolsheviks but to highlight the one-club devotion of the more modest of the pair. But Scholes understands rejection. He says of the Tevez strike: "When you're playing you think sometimes your manager is messing you about a bit. I got that feeling then [10 years ago]. Wrongly. The next day I wasn't going to Arsenal. The manager probably wasn't messing me about. But there all kinds of things going through your head.

"It was the Liverpool game on the Sunday and we were getting beat 2-0. In the League Cup I knew we would be playing a younger team. He [Sir Alex Ferguson] didn't bring me on against Liverpool until seven or eight minutes to go and I was disappointed not to be playing in the first place. I just got it in my head, maybe as Tevez has now, that I was being messed about.

"The thing with Tevez is that [Roberto] Mancini's definitely messing him about, which, when you're a player, you don't take kindly to. He's definitely trying to punish him for saying he wants to leave, because without doubt he was City's best player last season. To me it looks like he wants to play, but he can't cope with being sub. When you're a player you get the sense that – he's messing me about, I maybe have to show him I can't be messed about."

When it ends the publisher mentions the pictorial nature of the publication and stresses: "This is the only book. There won't be another one." Much as there won't be another Paul Scholes.

Scholes the next United boss but one?

This week, I found myself approaching an assignment with the giddy excitement of a 10-year-old. I was to meet someone who, to my mind, encapsulates all that is admirable about the game of football.

Paul Scholes has just published his autobiography and to launch it the formerly reticent one was required to undertake a round of interviews that redefined the term extensive. If not quite at Hollywood levels - the actress Uma Thurman was once obliged by the terms of her contract to sit through 1800 one-on-one media interviews in a fortnight in order to promote a film - the ginger genius was still in the midst of a punishing schedule when I was granted my 15 minutes with him.

Because of his previous reticence, Scholes was long ago written off by many as inarticulate, boring and lacking a sense of humour. As it transpires, he is none of those things.

Despite being bombarded with interest, despite being dozens of times asked the same questions (about Carlos Tevez and his own refusal to play in a game back in 2001) he was cheerful, sharp-witted and interesting. Funny too. He has a noticeable twinkle of amusement behind his eyes, a sense, no doubt, of the ridiculous circus into which he had unwittingly been plunged. He gave the impression that - given a choice - he would rather stick his head in a bucket of custard and gargle the national anthem than be subjected to six hours in a box at Old Trafford meeting a succession of gibbering fools. But being Scholes, he was prepared to do it to make the book work. And being a decent guy, he was not going to take out his frustrations on any of those asking the said stupid questions.

As it happens, even in a quarter of an hour, even in the midst of being obliged to do precisely what he least likes doing, there were hints that Scholes could be as gifted a commentator and analyst of the game as he was a player. Not that you would necessarily glean it from the pages of Paul Scholes: My Story, as bland and uninspired a volume as ever can have been extracted from a figure as interesting as this. But the fact is Scholes is a fascinating character.

Of course, there may have been something in his reputation that make his words seem so intriguing. This, after all, is the most technically gifted English footballer of his generation, a superb athlete, whose abilities on the pitch made everyone from Zinedine Zidane to Andres Iniesta look on in envy. This was a player who sang through his feet. Maybe whatever he had to say would be freighted with additional weight. But nonetheless his observations on the psychology of being stuck on the bench, on the selfishness of the top footballer, on the huge difference between trying to influence a result from the middle of the park and from the technical area, spoke of a fresh and different outlook. Take this about the sense of control he experienced when playing at the height of his powers:

"Being at your peak was a feeling that is hard to describe," he said. "Being 28, 29 here [at Old Trafford], going out almost knowing you are going to score goals, play well, you think you're invincible. When you got older, you felt different. It was almost as if anything could happen, you worried you might have a nightmare, that you'd be responsible for a right cock-up, there was no control. At your peak, you think you can do anything. When you get older it drifts from you, you lose that sense of certainty."

He is currently engaged on an apprenticeship as a coach in the United system, watching and learning. It's an informal education, a process taking in the reserves and the youth team, and a seat in the stands for every first-team game. The first problem he has encountered is a gap between the instinctive knowing what to do that he experienced when a player, and the need to articulate what he thinks should be done that is the lot of the coach. That, he says, is the hardest breach to overcome, the transition from the feet to the mouth.

But he is determined to do so. And my sense is, coaching is where his future lies. The media route taken by his old colleague, the increasingly sure-footed Gary Neville, holds little appeal. Besides, unlike some of his former youth team mates at United (mentioning no names, Robbie Savage) the sound of his own voice is not something he finds remotely appealing.

I suspect, given his sharp eye, his innate footballing intelligence and his determination to succeed at whatever he does, a future in a leading dug-out is inevitable.

The next United boss? Probably not. But the one after that is not a ridiculous proposition.

Bola.net - Eks gelandang Manchester United (MU) Paul Scholes rupa-rupanya tak ingin meninggalkan kenangan yang buruk dalam karirnya. Ia berusaha membersihkan namanya dari sebutan gelandang dengan tekel buruk.

Pemain yang pensiun di penghujung musim lalu itu memang dikenal sebagai gelandang hebat, tapi kemampuannya dalam urusan tekel sering kali diperdebatkan. Sebab, sering kali tekelnya berujung kartu yang merugikan MU.

"Tentu saja saya bisa melakukan tekel. Ada banyak bukti kalau saya dapat melakukannya dengan baik," tangkis Scholes pada BBC Radio Five Live.

Selama karirnya 1994-2011 ini, tercatat 145 kartu kuning dibukukan oleh Scholes, baik untuk klub ataupun tim nasional Inggris. "Tapi saya pikir, catatan karir saya tidaklah terlalu buruk, tidak terlalu banyak kartu kuning. Well, saya hanya mengumpulkan sedikit kartu kuning dan tak terlalu banyak diusir keluar, kan?" terang mantan pemain yang kini menginjak usia 36 tahun itu.

"Namun, setiap kali saya melakukan sebuah tekel saya malah dapat kartu, itu karena reputasi saya," pungkasnya. (espn/mxm)

Paul Scholes has admitted he tackled players as a form of retribution after being fouled himself.

The former Manchester United and England midfielder, who retired in the summer, was sent off 10 times during a distinguished career.

But the 36-year-old said in an interview with BBC Radio 5 Live that some of his infamous late tackles were made to exact revenge.

Scholes revealed he just wanted to ‘get people back’ after players had fouled him and denied he deserved his reputation for being a poor tackler.

‘Of course I can tackle,’ he said. ‘There’s plenty of evidence of me being able to tackle.

‘I was just getting people back. If someone got me early in the game, it was always in the back of my mind that I needed to get them back. I didn’t always do it on purpose. Some of it was just bad timing.’

Scholes claimed he received more bookings towards the end of his playing days because of his reputation and insisted his record was nothing out of the ordinary.

Trofi besar yang mendarat di Inggris hanyalah Piala Dunia 1966 yang digelar di kandang sendiri, dan Scholes pun tak yakin puasa gelar itu akan segera berakhir dalam waktu dekat.

"Anda bisa melihat empat atau lima turnamen terakhir - Inggris mungkin bisa melangkah sampai pada perempat final, namun tak ada lagi yang bisa ditunjukkan dan Piala Dunia 2010 di Afrika Selatan lalu merupakan musibah besar," sindirnya. (espn/row)

Mantan gelandang Manchester United, Paul Scholes agaknya sudah siap terjun penuh ke dunia kepelatihan. Dia siap naik jabatan menjadi pelatih kepala tim cadangan Man United menggantikan Warren Joyce yang bakal segera cabut ke Hull City.

Joyce sendiri melatih tim cadangan Man United sepeninggal Ole Gunnar Solskjaer ke Norwegia. Sementara, sejak pensiun dari lapangan hijau, Scholes pun sudah didaulat mendampingi dan menimba ilmu dari Joyce.

Kini, Joyce diharap kembali ke Hull, klub yang pernah dihuninya pada periode 1998-2000. Sementara Hull pun akan menunjuk Nick Barmby sebagai pendamping Joyce di Stadion KC.

Seperti dilansir Mirror Football , Hull sendiri tak perlu membayar kompensasi apapun kepada Man United untuk membawa Joyce ke KC. Dan, jika mendapat restu dari Sir Alex Ferguson, Scholes berpeluang naik pangkat guna menggantikan posisi Joyce di tim cadangan Setan Merah. (irawan)

Reds legend Paul Scholes came out of retirement for a charity game at his son’s football club.

The 36-year-old, who last played in May’s Champions League final, took to the field at Stalybridge Celtic where son Aaron plays for the juniors side.

But while the veteran midfielder showed he still had the skills, he needed a little help from his son after forgetting his kit.

He eventually ran out in boots and shinpads borrowed from Aaron who, despite having just turned 12, is already the same shoe size as his dad.

Paul, who retired earlier this year to take up a coaching post at Manchester United, played a half for both teams in a dads versus coaches game at the Bower Fold ground.

Aaron has been involved with Stalybridge juniors since he was five.

Paul, a former England star, said: “I’ve wanted to play for a few years but I’ve never had the chance so it was great to have a game.

“It was good to have a bit of fun with the coaches. It was a nice day out.”

After scoring a crowd-pleasing hat-trick, Paul then signed autographs and gave youngsters tickets for his testimonial match at Old Trafford tomorrow (Friday).

Money raised from Sunday’s match will go to buy new equipment for the club’s soccer school.

Thank goodness young Aaron Scholes is growing fast or there would have been a lot of very disappointed people at Bower Fold on Sunday.

Aaron’s illustrious father Paul had agreed to play in a dads v coaches match at Stalybridge Celtic, where the youngster plays for the under-12s.

It was only on Sunday morning that it dawned on Scholes that he doesn’t have any kit at home ? it’s always been kept at Old Trafford or Carrington.

But a solution was close at hand as, despite having just turned 12, Aaron is already the same shoe size as his dad.

So, as the ex-England star made his first appearance since May’s Champions League final, he ran out in boots and shinpads borrowed off his eldest lad.

This is all new to Scholes for while he was still playing professionally he wasn’t permitted to play in fundraising games such as this.

Aaron has been involved with Stalybridge juniors since he was five and Scholes is pleased he can play a more active role.

INILAH.COM, Manchester - Paul Scholes diminta beberapa pemain kunci Manchester United untuk kembali bermain di lapangan hijau setelah memutuskan pensiun akhir musim lalu.

Scholes memutuskan untuk gantung sepatu akhir musim lalu dan sejak itu menjadi pelatih tim muda dan tim cadangan MU. Badai cedera yang menimpa MU membuat beberapa mantan rekan Scholes memintanya untuk kembali bermain.

Namun, tidak ada pendekatan secara resmi yang dilakukan Sir Alex Ferguson mengenai masalah ini. Fergie sendiri menolak untuk panik meski harus kehilangan delapan pemain utama karena mengalami cedera. Scholes rejoins United

Paul Scholes has rejoined the playing staff at Manchester United for the remainder of the season with immediate effect, after approaching Sir Alex Ferguson to reverse his decision, made at the end of last season, to retire.

He has gone straight onto the bench for this afternoon’s FA Cup third round tie against Manchester City.

Sir Alex Ferguson said: "It’s fantastic that Paul has made this decision. It’s always sad to see great players end their careers, but especially so when they do it early.

"But he has kept himself in great shape and I always felt that he had another season in him. It’s terrific to have him back."

Sir Alex Ferguson believes there are absolutely no negatives about Paul Scholes' decision to reverse his call to retire at the end of last season.

At 37 Scholes decided over the summer that his body could no longer cope with the demands of top class football and closed the curtain on the most decorated of careers.

At the back end of last week rumours began to surface that Scholes had decided he had made a mistake and wanted to make a return to United's first team squad.

And that is precisely what happened on Sunday afternoon as the player made a 30-minute cameo at the Etihad Stadium as Manchester United reached the fourth round of the FA Cup after a 3-2 defeat of neighbours Manchester City.

Although he was partly responsible for Sergio Aguero's goal for City, which really made United sweat after Aleksandar Kolarov had reduced the deficit straight after the restart, Scholes helped to bring a measure of composure to United's game near the end.

Terrific addition

Ferguson believes Scholes' presence in the dressing room between now and the campaign's close could prove invaluable.

"The last few weeks, Paul has been training very hard with the reserves and doing a lot of work in the gym," said Ferguson.

"He came to see me and said 'I regret retiring'.

"There are no negatives for me. The players have been delighted. I am delighted. The fans are delighted.

"The last few weeks he has been stepping up his training and been taking part in our training sessions during the week.

"It is a terrific addition to our squad at a very important part of our season."

Paul Scholes: Manchester United Legend Won't Help Red Devils Catch City in EPL

With the biggest English Premier League game to date, Manchester United attempted to solidify their midfield for their derby with Manchester City by signing football legend Paul Scholes, according to ESPNSoccernet.

The signing of Scholes seems to be a desperate move to sure up the midfield for the stretch-run. In the end, Scholes won’t be able to help the Red Devils catch Manchester City in the EPL table.

Scholes does make United better in the midfield, but he won’t be enough for the Red Devils. However, Sir Alex Ferguson is excited to have him back, according to guardian.co.uk.

It's fantastic that Paul has made this decision. It's always sad to see great players end their careers, but especially so when they do it early. But he has kept himself in great shape and I always felt that he had another season in him. It's terrific to have him back."

Manchester United trails Manchester City by three points in the EPL standings and it seems like maybe this isn’t there year to win the Premier League.

There is something special going with Manchester City this season. They have everything going right for them and it’s going to take a monumental effort to knock them off their pedestal.

Sergio Aguero has been unbelievable this season tallying 14 goals. If Robin van Persie wasn’t doing what he has been doing, Aguero would get more recognition for the season he has been having. Edin Dzeko also has double-digit goals.

City has only lost two games all season. Expect their run to continue down the stretch in hopes for a Premier League crown.

Manchester United’s addition is solid, but it won’t help them catch City in the table because of the year they are having.

Bola.net - Striker Manchester United Danny Welbeck mengakui rekan-rekan setimnya termotivasi dengan "comeback" Paul Scholes pada pertandingan lawan Manchester City di Piala FA hari Minggu kemarin.

Bola.net - Mantan kapten Manchester United, Gary Neville, menilai rekannya sesama angkatan 1992 Paul Scholes sebenarnya masih bisa bermain untuk dua tahun lagi.

Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson says the shock re-signing of Paul Scholes is not a backwards step.

Scholes, 37, was a substitute in Manchester United's FA Cup win over Manchester City last Sunday - but some have criticised the move.

"One or two people have been negative and making out it's been a 'regressive step'," said Ferguson.

"How can it be regressive? You're getting a player for nothing who's been part of the club for 20-odd years."

Ferguson: "He's not going to play every game but in terms of composure and passing ability, is there a better player going around? Definitely not."

The veteran manager revealed that United only registered Scholes on the Friday before the game and kept the news a secret - even inside his own dressing room.

"I don't know how we managed it," he said. "We thought somehow it would get out.

"But we didn't let any of the players know simply because of the impact value.

"We were going away from home in a very difficult FA Cup tie against City.

"We had 5,000 fans at that end of the ground and as soon as they knew his name was on the team sheet they were fantastic, there was a great response."

Sir Alex Ferguson has rubbished claims that asking Paul Scholes to come out of retirement is a step backwards for Manchester United.

Ferguson sprang a surprise for Sunday's FA Cup third-round tie at neighbours City by naming Scholes on the substitutes' bench.

United have struggled to find a permanent successor after Scholes quit at the end of last season, with several contenders for the centre-midfield spot having been hit by injury this term.

The Reds therefore approached Scholes in their hour of need, with the former England star agreeing to play until the end of the season.

But some have questioned the wisdom of turning to a 37-year-old, while the decision to sell Darron Gibson, 24, to Everton on Friday has strengthened claims that Ferguson needs to balance the books.

"There were no negatives as far as I was concerned," said the United boss.

Vivanews.Scholes mencatatkan comeback luar biasa bersama Manchester United. Sempat pensiun setengah musim, Scholes masih mampu tampil hebat dengan mencetak gol di laga comeback perdana di Premier League.

"Sudah jelas sejak saya memutuskan berhenti bermain saya merindukan itu. Saya senang manajer merasa saya masih bisa memberikan kontribusi untuk tim dan saya tak sabar untuk memainkan peran saya," ujar Scholes.

Kehadiran Scholes sebagai pemain pengganti MU di kandang Manchester City di Piala FA mengejutkan Wayne Rooney cs. "Itu sedikit mengejutkan, jujur saja. Kami tidak tahu sampai kami berada di ruang ganti," kata Rooney seusai MU menyingkirkan juara Piala FA, City dengan kemenangan 3-2.

Sir Alex pun mempercayai Scholes untuk menjadi starter saat MU menjamu Bolton Wanderers, akhir pekan lalu. Keputusan Ferguson menurunkan pemain asal Inggris ini tepat. Karena Scholes mencetak gol pembuka dari kemenangan MU 3-0 atas Bolton.

Penampilan gemilang Scholes langsung mendapatkan pujian dari sang manajer. "Sangat mengejutkan melihat Scholes bisa mencetak gol lagi," ujar Ferguson.

Paul Scholes' return to action at Old Trafford has been warmly greeted by one of the few men to have made more Manchester United appearances than him - Sir Bobby Charlton.

Writing in his column for United Review, club ambassador Sir Bobby said Scholes' comeback made him "even more upbeat" about the Reds' chances of retaining the title in 2012.

"Paul Scholes returning to the squad is one of the best pieces of news I’ve ever had," said Sir Bobby. "I can imagine he’s been as patient as he could be, but at the end of the day he had to give in because he just wanted to come and play. He’s a fantastic player and we’re so lucky to have him. I was really knocked out when I heard the news and it made last Sunday the best day of my week."

Presumably this weekend was even better for Sir Bobby, with Paul scoring the all-important breakthrough goal against Bolton on Saturday. The way he popped up in the right place at the right time to break Adam Bogdan's resistance on the brink of the interval was classic Scholes.

"He’s a sensational footballer," continued Sir Bobby. "He’s happier now, you can see. I have no idea how long he’ll play - probably just till the end of the season, I don’t know - but it’s fantastic news.

"He’s a great player and we’re very lucky, because maybe the one thing Sir Alex had given a bit of thought to was that we needed a creative player in midfield. Bek Manchester United Patrice Evra mengungkapkan Sir Alex Ferguson menyamakan Paul Scholes dengan dinosaurus.

Rio Ferdinand menyebutkan sebuah perbandingan yang sangat luar biasa terhadap rekan setimnya yang baru saja kembali dari masa pensiunnya, Paul Scholes. Menurut bek Timnas Inggris ini, Scholes layaknya seorang Messi dan Xavi di Barcelona.

Paul Scholes could be in line for a sensational recall to the England squad after coming out of retirement to re-join Manchester United.
Fabio Capello is considering asking Scholes to end his international exile and join the Three Lions squad for the forthcoming European Championships.
The showpiece event in Poland and the Ukraine starts in June and with Scholes featuring regularly at the heart of the United midfield since his return, the Italian could be persuaded to make the call.

Capello attempted to pry Scholes out of retirement for the debacle that was the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.
However he declined the offer as Capello failed to contact him personally, rather leaving it up to his No 2 Franco Baldini take make the call.

But Scholes could now be back in Capello’s plans as the England boss focuses on his final tournament in charge of the Three Lions, according to the People.
Capello has begun the process of injecting youth into the ageing England team with the likes of Jack Wilshere, Jack Rodwell, Jordan Henderson, Theo Walcott and Adam Johnson featuring regularly.
But Scholes could add vital experience in the cut-throat business of tournament football.

Scholes Memang Kangen Main Lagi

Manchester, detiksport - Kembalinya Paul Scholes ke skuad Manchester United tak semata-mata karena 'Setan Merah' tengah dilanda krisis pemain tengah. Scholes sendiri mengaku memang kangen bersepakbola lagi.

Scholes sempat memutuskan gantung sepatu pada akhir musim lalu. Bahkan, sebagai bentuk penghormatan, MU sudah menggelar sebuah laga perpisahan untuk The Ginger Prince, yakni melawan New York Cosmos pada Agustus tahun lalu.

Setelah pensiun, Scholes kemudian mencoba belajar ilmu kepelatihan dengan membantu pelatih tim cadangan MU, Warren Joyce. Tapi, tiap hari melihat para pemain berlatih di Carrington membuat Scholes merasa ada sesuatu yang hilang dari dirinya.

"Pada akhir musim lalu, saya pikir inilah saat yang tepat untuk pensiun," ucap Scholes kepada MUTV.

"Tapi, setelah datang ke sini (Carrington) selama tiga atau empat bulan, melihat orang-orang dan sedikit berlatih bersama tim cadangan, ternyata saya benar-benar kangen lebih daripada yang saya kira," jelasnya.

Karena rindu yang sudah tak terbendung itu, Scholes akhirnya memberanikan diri menemui Sir Alex Ferguson dan mengutarakan hasratnya untuk memakai lagi sepatu yang sempat dia gantung. Ferguson merestuinya dan mengembalikan Scholes ke lapangan hijau dalam laga babak ketiga Piala FA kontra Manchester City.

"Saya kemudian menemui manajer dan bilang saya ingin kembali bermain," tambah Scholes.

"Saya tak tahu apa yang akan dia katakan. Saya tak tahu apa reaksinya. Untungnya, itu adalah positif," tandas pria 37 tahun ini.

Harry Redknapp would call on Paul Scholes if he gets England job

Harry Redknapp would attempt to entice Paul Scholes out of international retirement in order for him to start at Euro 2012 if, as expected, the 64-year-old becomes the England manager at the end of the domestic season. Redknapp also suggested that Steven Gerrard would be his England captain.

The Tottenham Hotspur manager will remain in his post until 13 May, when his club play their final fixture of the Premier League season, but he is then set to assume the England reins on a full-time basis, in time for Euro 2012 in Poland and Ukraine, which kicks off on 8 June, with an approach from the Football Association imminent.

The Tottenham chairman, Daniel Levy, will demand a high price in compensation for Redknapp, whom he does not want to lose, and there is the prospect of a lengthy wrangle, but the chairman must begin to plan for the longer-term without Redknapp. Everton's David Moyes features prominently on Levy's list of potential successors, and he may seek to talk to José Mourinho, Guus Hiddink and Didier Deschamps.

England have only one game before the end of the domestic season – the Wembley friendly against Holland on 29 February – and Stuart Pearce, the Under-21 manager, will take caretaker charge of the team.

Redknapp has continued to stress that his focus is on Tottenham's push for Champions League qualification and FA Cup success – they remain an outside bet for the Premier League title after Saturday's 5-0 home win over Newcastle United – but it is clear that he has begun to consider how he may do things as Fabio Capello's permanent successor in the England job.

Capello resigned on Wednesday, having felt undermined by the FA's decision to remove the England captaincy from John Terry. Hours earlier, Redknapp had been acquitted of tax evasion at Southwark crown court.

Redknapp has never hidden his admiration for Scholes, the Manchester United midfielder, who retired from international football in 2004. Capello offered him the opportunity to return for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa but Scholes declined, although he said that if Capello had asked him earlier and given him more time, he would probably have accepted. He admitted that saying no may have been a mistake.

Scholes retired altogether at the end of last season but he made a surprise comeback for United in the FA Cup win at Manchester City on 8 January and he has since appeared in every match for the club, winning praise for his performances. Redknapp would now like to see him go back on another retirement decision.

"Let's be honest, you would love to have Paul Scholes in the Euros this year," he said. "He'd be in your team, he's that good. Whoever's there would love to take him, I'm sure. You'd love him to play. He plays like the Spaniards, like Xavi [Hernández] or [Andrés] Iniesta. He does not give the ball away."

Redknapp could be expected to dismiss age as a concern in his England squad, having always seen the value in experienced players, and not only in relation to Scholes, who is 37. Redknapp was also praised Chelsea's Frank Lampard, 33, and Liverpool's Gerrard, 31.

"You need men in your side, you need characters if you are going to win anything," Redknapp said. "Frank is still a top player. You write Frank off at your peril. He's still a top player in my opinion. Stevie Gerrard is still a top-class player. We have got some good players in our midfield."

It was put to Redknapp that Scott Parker, his midfield general at Tottenham, could make an England captain, which he agreed with, but it sounded as though Gerrard would be his preference.

"I think there are some good candidates," Redknapp said. "Gerrard is a good candidate. Stevie Gerrard is a fantastic player. There are one or two who could do it. Scottie could do it, for sure, but so could Steve."

Scholes may extend his comeback into next season, says Ferguson

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson expects midfielder Paul Scholes to stay on with the Old Trafford outfit.

Scholes quit last summer believing he was no longer making the kind of contribution he wanted, and it was envisaged he would go into a coaching role with the United reserves.

However, the job did not turn out to be quite what Scholes wanted and he asked Ferguson whether there was any possibility of being allowed to resume his playing career.

The 37-year-old returned for the FA Cup third-round tie at Manchester City in January and has now made 10 appearances and scored two vital goals for the Red Devils, more than he managed in the whole of last season.

Scholes may never reach the staggering statistics of Ryan Giggs, who marked 900 appearances at Norwich last weekend.

But the Welshman's continued presence should help to persuade Scholes he can go on as well.

'I haven't discussed Paul's future with him but on the evidence we have seen at the moment there is no reason why he shouldn't (stay another year),' said Ferguson.

'When I said to him last year you'll give me 25 to 30 games it wasn't enough for him.

But I think he may look at it differently now.

'He knew right away when he went coaching with the reserves and took part in the sessions he could hack it.

'He came to me and said he'd made a mistake.

'The evidence we are seeing now is he is right. His form has been fantastic.'

Giggs is something else entirely, though, with Ferguson confirming the records now being set by the Welshman will never be equalled.

'To get to 900 games is beyond anyone now,' he said.

'In the modern day, nobody will do that for one club.'

Former Manchester United defender Gary Pallister believes Harry Redknapp is the only manager who could tempt Paul Scholes to play for England again.

Scholes, 37, quit playing for his country in 2004 but, having retired at the end of last season, returned for Manchester United in January.

"Harry's got great powers of persuasion," Pallister told BBC Sport.

"He could be the only man, apart from Sir Alex Ferguson, that could do that but my feeling is it won't happen."

Tottenham boss Redknapp has been tipped by several England players to be the next manager after Fabio Capello resigned over the handling of John Terry being stripped of the captaincy in February.

And, although he has distanced himself from the job, the Spurs manager said Scholes should go to the 2012 European Championship in Poland and Ukraine this summer.

Scholes, who won 66 caps playing for England and scored 14 goals, retired from international football following Euro 2004 after being frustrated at being played out of position - and because he wanted to spend more time with his family.

And Pallister, who was also capped 22 times, said: "Harry knows how good a player he is. Unfortunately, when he was playing for England, he got messed about.

Manchester United boss Ferguson said it would be a "big step" for Scholes to return for England.

But the midfielder surprised the football world when he came out of retirement to play for his club against Manchester City in their FA Cup third-round tie on 8 January.

And he almost completed a shock return for England to play in the 2010 World Cup.

He was contacted by Capello's assistant Franco Baldini at short notice, but said he was not given enough time to make a decision and did not want to replace players who had secured England's qualification to South Africa. He has since said that was a cause of regret.

"International football suits Scholes down to a tee," Pallister added. "If you give the ball away in international football you can wait a hell of a long time to get it back.

"The one thing he does give you is control of the ball and doesn't give it away too often. I'm sure he would be a plus but I don't think that's going to happen.

"If Harry Redknapp went to him and said, 'Listen Scholesy I want you to be a pivotal part of this European Championship', then it might sway him.

"But Capello sent his second in command to speak to him last time and I think he felt that, if you were desperate for him to go to a major championship, then the manager would have come and asked Scholes himself."

Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes is considering extending his comeback from retirement.

The veteran playmaker retired at the end of last season, but made an unlikely return in the 3-2 FA Cup win over rivals Manchester City on January 8.

Scholes, 37, has been in fine fettle since getting back to business, starting eight times in 13 appearances, and netting two goals.

Now he is tempted to sign a one-year contract extension, like his colleague Ryan Giggs did in February.

Sir Alex Ferguson said of Scholes: 'His form has been fantastic.'

Ferguson for one would be delighted if the midfielder prolonged his return, with Manchester United's midfield already in need of reinforcement.

Both Scholes and Giggs scored in United's 2-1 win over Norwich at Carrow Road, securing a vital victory.

Scholes made his debut for Manchester United in September 1994, against Port Vale, a 2-1 victory in which he scored both goals for his side.

It is astonishing that over 17 years later he is still an influential part of the United team.

And it could be that Scholes' input is what it takes to secure the title for the Red Devils.

Manchester - Saat Sir Alex Ferguson memutuskan menerima kembali Paul Scholes dari periode pensiun, banyak pihak melontarkan kritik. Kenyataannya, Scholes malah punya peran besar dalam sukses Manchester United bertengger di puncak.

Sekitar enam bulan setelah menyatakan mundur dari dunia sepakbola, Scholes memutuskan kembali memperkuat MU. Di awal tahun 2012 lalu dia memakai lagi seragam The Red Devils, membantu lapangan tengah klub tersebut yang terganggu akibat banyak pemain cedera.

Kembalinya Scholes sempat mendatangkan kritik, salah satunya dari Patrick Vieira, yang tak lain merupakan duta Manchester City. Memanggil kembali pemain senior yang sudah pensiun juga dianggap sebagai bentuk rasa frustrasi Fergie, yang ketika itu merasakan tekanan hebat dari City dan tengah tertinggal di posisi kedua.

Tapi Scholes kemudian membuktikan kalau kembalinya dia ke lapangan hijau benar-benar punya pengaruh buat MU. Dalam kurun tiga bulan dia dimainkan 12 kali oleh Fergie, dan dalam kesempatan tersebut dia mencetak tiga gol. Sejak Scholes kembali, MU sukses memenangi 11 dari 12 pertandingan di Premier League.

"Paul punya pengaruh yang besar. Kami semua tahu seberapa baik dia dan apa yang dia bawa ke tim ini, di lapangan dan luar lapangan. Untuk kembali lagi dan langsung bermain seperti dia sungguh luar biasa. Dia masih bisa menjalani banyak pertandingan lagi," sahut Michael Carrick di Sportinglife.

Pernyataan senada dilontarkan Rio Ferdinand. Meski awalnya sempat diragukan, Scholes membuktikan kalau kembalinya dia kelapangan malah memberi kontribusi positif buat 'Setan Merah'.

"Banyak hal diucapkan terkait kembalinya dia, apakah baik atau buruk buat kami. Tapi Anda bisa lihat hasil yang kami dapat setelah dia kembali. Dia pemain yang fantastis. Tak cuma pertandingan yang Anda lihat, tapi juga di latihan. Dia adalah contoh buat semua pemain muda di klub," sahut Ferdinand di Skysport.

Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes is set to accept an offer from Sir Alex Ferguson to play on for another season at Old Trafford, according to The Times.

The 37-year-old scored the second goal in a 2-0 win over QPR on Sunday to cap an excellent all-round performance which was praised by his manager and team-mates alike.

United have only dropped two points in 12 games since Scholes returned in January – a run which has seen them overhaul Manchester City and open up an eight-point gap at the top of the table.

The report states that the former England star is now ready to accept an offer from Sir Alex to continue playing next season, while midfield partner Michael Carrick is convinced he can carry on.

Carrick said: "His performances, having come straight back into the team, have been amazing. He has just carried on and I’m sure he has got a lot more games left in him yet."

It was no coincidence that Scholes was in the stands for United's first loss in 13 Premier League matches since the 37-year-old midfielder came out of retirement.
Scholes has become a key figure under Sir Alex Ferguson again and after calling time on his career following the promise of 15 to 20 games, the 12 consecutive league appearances the veteran had managed since coming back had yielded 34 points.

With Manchester City capitalising on United’s defeat by moving within five points of the leaders with a 4-0 win over West Bromwich Albion, Scholes is sure to be prominent again in back-to-back home games against Aston Villa and Everton that Ferguson claims will be crucial in deciding the destination of the title.

Jones thinks the midfielder, who retired from international football in 2004 and rejected the chance to go to the World Cup two years ago, could have a similarly galvanising effect on England at the European Championship this summer.

“I don’t see why not,” Jones, speaking at the England Footballers Foundation Charity Golf Cup, said. “I think as long as you are [mentally] one or two steps ahead of people on the field, although they do say these days you have to have a lot of pace. But I think if you’re clever enough and you read the game well enough, I don’t think age will be a problem.

“He’s a terrific player. I remember playing in his testimonial at the start of the season. It was the first time I had played with him and I thought he was just unbelievable.

“When you see him in training and the things he does it’s just a joke.”
He added that it “wouldn’t surprise me” if he went to the Euros. It is a view echoed by Smalling, who feels that whoever replaces Fabio Capello will be keen to utilise the experience and ability of Scholes.

“He is unique,” Smalling said. “You can see when there are moments in the game when it is all rushed and he settles it down when he gets the ball.
“He has the ability to dictate. Come the summer there may well be calls for him to be included in the squad and it will be because he is a player in great form and I’m sure any England manager would want.”

Ferguson acknowledged that his team were beaten by the better side at Wigan but Ryan Giggs has called for the kind of response that has characterised the manager’s time at Old Trafford to ensure that City are given no more encouragement.

The Welshman, 38, feels that six points from the Villa and Everton games will give United a significant platform to take into the trip to City on April 30.
“We’ve got to not get too down at what’s happened,” Giggs said. “It’s happened quite a bit this season, there’s been an odd sort of display where we’ve just not performed but the main thing is we’ve recovered from it and that’s what we’ve got to do.”
Giggs says it is important to beat Villa and Everton. “We’re at Old Trafford and at home and we’ll be looking to win both games and put the pressure on.”

The Premier League—now in its 20th season—is encouraging fans to vote on who they think are the best players to have graced England's top-flight since it was reformed in 1992.

On the shortlist—drawn up by a panel of expert judges—for "best midfielder" is Paul Scholes, amongst others.

Whilst the other candidates, such as his teammates Keane and Paul Ince, as well as Fabregas, Gerrard, Lampard, Makelele, Matt Le Tissier and Emmanuel Petit, were brilliant midfield maestros, none had the impact of Scholes.

For this is a player who should rightfully be called the greatest midfielder of the Premier League era.

And whilst he shies away from the media, those who have played with or against him haven't when speaking of his talent.

Only AC Milan midfield enforcer Mark van Bommel (11 accurate long balls hit per game on average) and Juventus star Andrea Pirlo (11.1 per match) are statistically better, but what Scholes has on them is a significantly higher pass success rate.

And besides his passing, Scholes has also made a big goalscoring impact to United, still justifying his chant "Paul Scholes, he scores goals" from the Old Trafford faithful.

And that is why Paul Scholes deserved to be labelled as the greatest midfielder of the Premier League era.

He's a player who has lasted at the top longer than almost all others in world football, especially those in the Premier League, and is one of the sport's greatest role models.

Sir Alex Ferguson admits the potentially decisive return of Paul Scholes was a lucky break in Manchester United’s title bid.

The balance of power in their Premier League duel with *neighbours City tilted United’s way when Scholes came out of retirement at the beginning of the year.

During the Scholes-inspired surge, they suffered their only defeat at Wigan 11 days ago – when the 36-year-old midfield maestro was rested.

United take a five-point *advantage into today’s home match against Everton and know that victory would set up the prospect of clinching the crown at the Etihad tomorrow week.

The catalyst for that turn-around has been the influence of a rejuvenated *Scholes.

And Ferguson acknowledges the fates have played into his hands.

“We don’t play him every match. We rested him at Wigan and *although the result didn’t show it, that was the right thing to do. That’s the way we’ll structure his career here now. It’s exactly the same with Ryan Giggs. When he takes a rest he comes back *flying.”

Ferguson is anxious to keep Scholes’ mind clear for the climax to the *campaign and avoid all talk of a possible new contract for next season.

He said: “I’m not *going to ask him until the end of the *season. I don’t want to put *anything in his mind at all.”

Ferguson is bracing himself for another tricky fixture against an Everton side that has been *bolstered by contributions from ex-United players Phil *Neville, Tim Howard and *Darron Gibson.

He said: “Phil and Tim have done exceptionally well. Phil is captain and he uses his experience well for them. He was an outstanding *professional here and he has continued that there.

“It’s not easy to leave here and many have left with varying degrees of success.

“Darron’s adjusting. He needed the games and that will help his Irish career too.”

Sir Alex Ferguson has confirmed veteran midfielder Paul Scholes has signed a one-year contract extension with Manchester United.

After abandoning his retirement in January, there had been some speculation that the 37-year-old was deliberating whether to extend his career by an additional season.


However, speaking at this evening's Manchester United Player of the Year dinner, Ferguson told MUTV: "It has been done. He is staying."


Ferguson does believe this will be Scholes' last season in a United shirt and will be wary of the midfielder being selected in Roy Hodgson's Euro 2012 squad, as has been suggested.


However, the United manager is convinced the midfielder can have a similar impact next season after he almost managed to guide the club to the title following his comeback.


"I am delighted," said Ferguson.
