Gone but not forgotten

The Munich air disaster on 6 February 1958 claimed the lives of 23 passengers and crew. Here, ManUtd.com remembers the eight United players and three officials who died, through the words of those who knew them best.

Roger Byrne - aged 28, full-back. 277 appearances, 19 goals, 33 England caps.

"An aristocratic footballer, majestic in his movement. Roger was so fast but at the same time he controlled his movement beautifully, like Nureyev." - Sir Matt Busby

Geoff Bent - aged 25, full-back. 12 appearances.

"When Geoff matured and reached his twenties there were many clubs after him but he stayed loyal. He could look after himself and was a great tackler. Roger Byrne was a consistent player and very brave, that was the reason Geoff got so few games, but he was good enough to hold a regular place in any team." - Jimmy Murphy

Eddie Colman - aged 21, half-back. 107 appearances, 2 goals.

"Eddie was a chirpy lad and a terrific player. He pushed the ball - never kicked it - and he jinked past players. He was known for his swivel hips." - Wilf McGuinness

David Pegg - aged 22, forward, 148 appearances, 28 goals, 1 England cap.

"David would have been a great asset to any team because he was a natural, left-flank player. David was very, very clever. Our best left-winger by a mile." - Sir Matt Busby

Mark Jones - aged 24, half-back, 120 appearances, 1 goal.

"Yorkshireman Mark was a really lovely fellow, but my word he was a tough nut, and nobody took any liberties with him on or off the field." - Bill Foulkes

Duncan Edwards - aged 21, half-back, 175 apps., 21 goals, 18 England caps, 5 goals.

"When I used to hear Muhammad Ali proclaim to the world he was the greatest, I used to smile. The greatest of them all was a footballer named Duncan Edwards." - Jimmy Murphy

"The only player who ever made me feel inferior." - Sir Bobby Charlton

Tommy Taylor - aged 26, forward, 189 apps., 128 goals, 19 England caps, 16 goals

"I rate him as one of the all-time, best centre-forwards in the game, and he had yet to realise all his potential. He was a typically bluff Yorkshireman in many ways, often acting the clown, and a great team man." - Bill Foulkes

Liam 'Billy' Whelan - aged 22, forward, 96 apps., 52 goals, 4 Republic of Ireland caps

"Billy was a magician with a ball at his feet. I really don't think he knew how good he was and how much better he could have become. A world-class forward. There is no doubt about that. His vision and passing was sheer class." - Albert Scanlon

Walter Crickmer, club secretary / Tom Curry, trainer / Bert Whalley, coach

"Walter Crickmer always reminded me of a little dynamo, nothing was too much trouble. Tom Curry, the trainer, treated us all like boys, and such was his character with a comic sense of humour, that we all looked up to him like a father. Bert Whalley was certainly a tremendous help to me when I was a part-timer." - Bill Foulkes

Ability

According to those who experienced what Duncan Edwards could do on a football field, he was the complete footballer and there wasn`t a single weakness in his game. He could dribble like a winger and pass like an inside forward. He had unrivalled stamina and could have run for days. He could shoot powerfully, with either foot, was dominant in the air and could tackle like a tidal wave, such was the range of ability he possessed in his young body.

Roger Byrne (full back, captain) aged 28. Inspirational captain, fast, overlapping fullback and former winger. An England regular at the time. Died in the crash.

Geoff Bent (fullback) aged 25. Understudy to Byrne. Hard as nails, very good defender. Would have walked into any other side. Preferred to stay in the squad at United. Died at Munich.

Tommy Taylor (centre forward) aged 26. England's centre forward, and a prolific goalscorer. Prodigious heading ability. Incredible scoring record: 112 goals in 166 league games at United. Died at Munich.

Liam Whelan (striker) aged 22. 43 goals in 79 league games for United. Appeared slow, but able to turn defenders inside out and score great goals. Died at Munich.

Eddie Colman (midfield / halfback) aged 21. When I moved to Birmingham in the late 70s I used to talk football with a chap in his sixties who reckoned Eddie Colman was the driving force behind the Busby Babes; the creative spark that fired the whole team. This guy was a Brummie through and through, but he had been so inspired by the Babes that he never stopped referring to them, and still rated Eddie "Snakehips" Colman the best he'd ever seen. Salford's Eddie Colman died at Munich.

David Pegg (winger) aged 22. The best young left winger in England, he was on the verge of a spectacular career when he died at Munich.

Mark Jones (defender) aged 24. Powerful centre half; very hard on the field, and a true gentleman off it. Died at Munich.

Duncan Edwards (halfback) aged 21. Only 16 when he made his United debut, Duncan Edwards is widely regarded as the greatest footballer in history. Big, strong, skillful, fast, hard, fair, great natural ability, thunderous shot with both feet, fiersome tackler. Lived for football. Lived for Manchester United. Refused to sign for any other club. Died 2 weeks after the crash from terrible injuries.

This team had won its last game on English soil 5-4 at Highbury, and drew 3-3 in Belgrade in the European Cup Quarter Final (to go through 5-4 on aggregate). They were lying 4th in the table, with a home game against Wolves - the leaders - coming up the following Saturday. A win would have put them back on top. This Manchester United team was awesome, and an inspiration to football fans all over England - and indeed Europe.

Take a look at the ages of the players who died. Try to imagine the feelings of the survivors when they discovered that so many of their comrades had perished. Now imagine yourself as a youngster, so inspired by these footballers only a few years older than yourself. Then try to feel the shock, pain and anguish and disbelief and utter helplessness of hearing about their sudden demise. This was not just the biggest tragedy in English football, it was the defining moment in the history of Manchester United. The groundswell of passion that followed was unbelievable. Millions of folks - some not even football addicts - wept openly. Schools were closed. Memorial services and tributes proliferated all over Europe. The greatest club side in English football history was wiped out at Munich.

This is what moved Iain Matthews to write "Busby's Babes", a simple yet extremely poignant song:

I'll see you again my Red Devil friends
I'll hear you around my door
Touching my life like so many memories before

I was a child and so easily led
You were the leaders of men
Now I doubt in my life if this ever happens again

Oh, how I cried when my mama said
Busby's Babes, son, they're dead

Oh how I remember that miserable day
When something was taken from me
Out on a snow covered runway in West Germany

Oh, how I cried when my mama said
Busby's Babes, son, they're dead

(Iain Matthews, from the album "Pure & Crooked")

May all those that died Rest in Peace

Thread bagus nich untuk mengenang OUR HEROES!
Benar-benar cerita yang memillukan..

I'll start withh.......

KELAHIRAN BUSBY BABES............

Team :
Gordon Clayton, Fulton, Paddy Kennedy, Eddie Colman, Ron Cope, Duncan Edwards, Noel McFarlane, Billy Whelan, Edward Lewis, David Pegg, Albert Scanlon

Duncan Edwards merupakan pemain yang paling dibicarakan saat itu, karena dia melakukan debutnya di tim utama saat berusia 16 tahun 185 hari sewaktu melawan Cardiff, 4 April 1953...

http://img183.imageshack.us/img183/417/5facupyouthpa7.jpg
Mereka berhasil menjadi Juara setelah menghancurkan Wolves 7-1 saat 2nd Leg.. dan akhirnya menang agregrat 9-3 setelah dipertemuan pertama imbang 2-2...

http://img183.imageshack.us/img183/1087/6jimmymurphyfacupyouthkw1.jpg

http://img176.imageshack.us/img176/8084/13firstdiv5556hy9.jpg
Meskipun sempat terseok-seok diawal musim, UNited berhasil mengambil alih pimpinan klasemen sejak Natal dan akhirnya berhasil unggull 11 point atas Blackpool...

http://img249.imageshack.us/img249/6053/14firsttrophynn6.jpg
Setelah menjuarai liga dengan permainan yang Impresif.. banyak harapan yang tersembul kepada skuad muda penuh potensi ini.. hingga ada istilah saat itu :" TODAY IS ENGLAND, TOMORROW IS THE WORLD...." ya..

Media seantero Inggris menjuluki tim ini sebagi THE GREATEST TEAM IN THE WORLD...

http://img442.imageshack.us/img442/8333/15unitedchampions572lh9.jpg

Jika kita lihat sejarah musim 1956/1957...

http://img509.imageshack.us/img509/1277/17fantasticfourvu1.jpg
EDWARDS, PEGG, BYRNE, VIOLET..

1957/1958.................... to Be COntinued....

di Musim 1957/1958........

MUNICH TRAGEDY.................

Banyak pihak yang menantikan perjalanan Manchester United di musim ini setelah kesuksesan dua tahun sebelumnya, meskipun gagal merah Treble.. Antusiasme yang muncul begitu tinggi.... We can say "WE WERE THE PROUD OF ENGLAND" on that day....

http://img162.imageshack.us/img162/7269/18vsarsenal54yk4.jpg
Sebelum melawat ke Belgrade. untuk mengahdapi pertandingan perempatfinal 2nd Leg. United lebih dulu bertanding melawan Arsenal, dimana saat itu United menang 5-4....

http://img86.imageshack.us/img86/5139/19naikkapalkebegradebn2.jpg

http://img254.imageshack.us/img254/2567/21theteamofcenturyca9.jpg
Team of The Century.....

http://img247.imageshack.us/img247/9058/22mutragedynq0.jpg

================

thebusbybabes.com

This is a history of the events leading up to, including and following the tragedy of Thursday February 6, 1958 in which 23 people connected with the Manchester United British football team lost there lives. Events that molded Manchester United into the football club it is today.

INTRODUCTION

http://www.thebusbybabes.com/main/munich2.jpg
Players, officials and journalists prepare to board the BEA Elizabethan, which was to crash at Munich. The aircraft stopped at the snowbound German airport to refuel as the party made its way back to England from Yugoslavia.

The team Matt Busby had built from the club's successful youth policy seemed destined to dominate football for many years. Such was the power of the Babes that they seemed invincible. The average age of the side which won the Championship in 1955-56 was just 22, the youngest ever to achieve such a feat. A year when they were Champions again, nothing, it seemed, would prevent the young braves of Manchester United from reigning for the next decade.

United had taken their first steps into European football in defiance of the football authorities and it was on foreign soil that the final chapter in the story of the Babes was to be written. The aircraft carrying the United party back from a victorious visit to Yugoslavia crashed in the snow of Munich airport and the Babes were no more.

The young Champions flew out of Manchester to face Red Star Belgrade remembering the cheers of 63,000 intoxicated football fans. Five days before Munich, United had played Arsenal at Highbury and thrilled all those who witnessed that game with a display of the attacking football that they had made their trademark. Nine goals were scored ... four by Arsenal, five by United.

That game, on Saturday, 1 February 1958, had typified the Busby Babes. They played with such flair and enthusiasm that they thought nothing of conceding four goals in their efforts to score five. United were trying to win the League Championship for the third successive season and by then had already reached the fifth round of the FA Cup.

To set the scene for the tragedy, which was to shock football, let us consider how the 1957-58 led up to a symbolic game with Arsenal and the fateful journey to Yugoslavia. For United, the season had started well, victories over Leicester at Filbert Street, then Everton and Manchester City at Old Trafford being the perfect launch towards the title. Their scoring record was remarkable with 22 goals coming in the opening six games. Yet when they lost for the first time it was not by just an odd goal, but by 4:0 at Burnden Park, where Bolton Wanderers ran rampant in front of a crowd of 48,003.

http://www.thebusbybabes.com/main/airplane.jpg

http://www.thebusbybabes.com/main/paper.jpg

As 1957 drew to an end the Babes lost 1-0 to Chelsea at Old Trafford, then picked themselves up to beat luckless Leicester 4-0. On Christmas Day goals from Charlton, Edwards and Taylor secured two points against Luton in Manchester. On Boxing Day they met Luton again at Kenilworth Road and drew 2-2 and two days later the `derby' game with Manchester City ended in the same scoreline at Maine Road. A crowd of 70,483 watched that game as the old rivals battled for pride as well as points.

As the European Cup-tie with Red Star approached, the side also made progress in the FA Cup with a 3-1 win at Workington and a 2-0 victory over Ipswich at Old Trafford to see them through to the fifth round, where they were to meet Sheffield Wednesday.

But the third target for Matt Busby, success in Europe, was perhaps the greatest. In 1956 United had become the first English club to compete in the European Champions' Cup, falling at the semi-final to the might of Real Madrid, winners of the trophy in the competition's first five years.

That year, the European seed had been sown. Manchester had witnessed the skills of di Stefano, Kopa and Gento, had seen United score ten times against Belgian club Anderlecht, then hang on against Borussia Dortmund before a remarkable quarter-final against Atletico Bilbao. In this match the Babes defied the odds by turning a 5-3 deficit from the first leg into a 6-5 victory, with goals from Taylor, Viollet and Johnny Berry, to win the right to challenge Real Madrid in the penultimate round.

That was where the run ended, but when United qualified to enter the European competition again in the 1957-58 season it was clear where the club's priorities lay. Matt Busby wanted a side that was good enough to win everything. The FA Cup had been snatched out of his grasp because of an injury to goalkeeper Ray Wood in the 1957 final, but his Babes were capable of reaching Wembley once again. Having secured the League Championship in 1956 and 1957 they could certainly emulate the great side of pre-war Huddersfield Town and Arsenal and win it for a third successive time.

United's second European campaign saw them stride over Irish champions Shamrock Rovers before beating Dukla Prague 3:1 on aggregate to reach the quarter-final against Red Star. The Yugoslavs came to Manchester on 14 January 1958, and played a United side which smarting from a 1:1 draw at Elland Road against Leeds United, who had been beaten 5:0 at Old Trafford earlier in the season.

Bobby Charlton and Eddie Colman scored the goals that gave United the edge in a 2:1 first leg victory over Red Star, but it would be close in Belgrade. The run-up to the second leg was encouraging. A 7:2 win over Bolton, with goals from Bobby Charlton (3), Dennis Viollet (2), Duncan Edwards and Albert Scanlon, was just the result United needed before visiting Highbury, then leaving on the tiring journey behind the Iron Curtain.

United's flag is deepest red,
It shrouded all our Munich dead,
Before their limbs grew stiff and cold,
Their heart's blood dyed it's every fold.

Then raise United's banner high,
Beneath it's shade we'll live and die,
So keep the faith and never fear,
We'll keep the Red Flag flying here.

We'll never die, we'll never die,
We'll never die, we'll never die,
We'll keep the Red flag flying high,
'Cos Man United will never die

Munich 1958

Munich '58: TV drama

For 50 years, Manchester felt the pain of the Munich air crash. United’s legendary Busby Babes team was torn apart one snowy February night in 1958. The first dramatic portrayal of the disaster was shown on BBC One in 2006.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/manchester/content/images/2005/12/16/munich_plane_203_203x152.jpg
February 6th 1958 is etched into the consciousness of every Mancunian of a certain age. No single tragedy in Manchester’s modern history – bar the IRA bomb – has been so keenly felt and at the time, the entire city went into mourning.

A BBC series – Surviving Disaster – recreated the events in a drama documentary broadcast on 10 January 2006.

The first episode - Munich Air Crash - featured actors playing the roles of players and reporters celebrating on the plane journey home after winning a second leg tie against Red Star Belgrade in the European Cup.

On board was the finest collection of young talent ever assembled in one team: Bobby Charlton, Dennis Violet, Tommy Taylor and the legendary Duncan Edwards are all shown joking nervously as the plane stopped to refuel in Munich.

But after two aborted take-offs, cold fear replaced the teammates’ laughter as the plane mad its third - and ill-fated - attempt to take-off in a blizzard.

Munich remembered

Series Producer Greg Lanning remembered Munich as a boy and said he was all too aware of emotions it could still evoked.

"I’m old enough to remember the actual event and I remember the impact it had on Manchester and the rest of the world so it’s part of my growing up to appreciate the impact of it. And it’s part of the myth of Manchester United."

Twenty-three people died in the crash including eight United players - Roger Byrne, Eddie Colman, Mark Jones, David Pegg, Tommy Taylor, Geoff Bent, Liam Whelan and Duncan Edwards.

Many Manchester press journalists also perished in the crash. Manager Sir Matt Busby was seriously injured. So was Bobby Charlton.

Eye witnesses
The programme makers spoke to eye witnesses, former players, airport and medical staff who are still living to help recreate the exact mood on board. The result is very powerful indeed.

"I wouldn’t say that every line and every word is true to life," says Greg Lanning.

"But we were told by the people on the plane that the atmosphere was very relaxed for the first two take-offs. Nobody thought anything of it. It was only on the third take off when there was a little bit more worry."

"But I think when you’re travelling as a team there is a camaraderie even in a moment of tension when you might crack jokes. We weren’t there, we can’t say for sure, but we understand this is true to the spirit of what went on."
The programme also examined the subsequent air accident investigation which eventually showed that it was slush on the runway slowing the aircraft down, rather than ice on the wings, which caused the crash.
Drama v documentary

The producer also defended the decision to make the first dramatic portrayal of the crash – even though Manchester United and Bobby Charlton refused to be part of it.

"It’s clearly a drama, it isn’t a documentary. And the moment we reconstruct events and put actors and actresses in them, means that it isn’t an absolutely faithful reproduction of the actual event because that’s not possible.

"What I think the archive does is to remind you that it’s actually based on fact. So the fact that you see the real Duncan Edwards, the real Matt Busby and so on in the course of the film is to remind you that the story we’re telling you is based on a true event."

Busby Babes film to be shot in North East
A film telling the story of the “Busby Babes”, the Manchester United team torn apart by the Munich air crash in 1958, is to be filmed in the North East.

http://i.telegraph.co.uk/telegraph/multimedia/archive/01760/busbylineup_1760919b.jpg

Eight members of the squad died when the plane carrying them back from a European Cup match in Belgrade crashed after stopping to refuel in Munich.

The deaths of half the 44 passengers on the plane – including players, club staff, journalists, supporters and crew – were one of the defining moments in the club’s history.

But despite the emotion still stirred in Manchester by the memory of the tragedy, the BBC has taken the decision to shoot the film in the North East.

United will bring to life the disaster that befell the team, who had become the youngest side to win the football league, and their battle to overcome the devastation.

David Tennant, the former Doctor Who actor, will play coach Jimmy Murphy, who led the side as manager Sir Matt Busby recovered from his injuries.

Jack O'Connell, who has appeared in Skins, will play Bobby Charlton and Sam Claflin, from Any Human Heart, will play Duncan Edwards, who died 15 days after the crash.

The actor playing Busby is yet to be named. Film-makers have drawn on first-hand accounts to piece the story together.

The BBC said it had chosen to film in the North East because it was important to find authentic settings reflective of the 1950s.

A spokeswoman for the corporation said: “You have to find the right location to suit the period.

“It is easier to find that in the North East because in modern day Manchester it is very hard to find that sort of thing.”

She added that the decision was also due to the role of North East screen agency Northern Film and Media, which part-funded the production.

David Tennant to star in Busby Babes BBC drama

http://news.bbcimg.co.uk/media/images/49932000/jpg/_49932284_010360366-1.jpg
David Tennant will play Jimmy Murphy who helped piece together the team after the accident.

David Tennant is to star in a new BBC drama about Manchester United and a plane crash that killed eight of the team's players in 1958.

United will bring to life the disaster using first-hand interviews with the survivors and their families.

The players, who became known as the Busby Babes - after manager Sir Matt Busby, became the youngest side to win the football league.

Tennant, best known as Doctor Who, will play Welsh-born coach Jimmy Murphy.

Murphy, from Rhondda, was not involved in the fatal crash but helped to piece together the team as Busby recovered from his injuries.

He managed to steer United to that season's FA Cup final and in the same year, as Wales coach, guided his country to the World Cup quarter-finals, where they lost to eventual winners Brazil.

At the time of the accident the team were on their way home from a European Cup match against Red Star Belgrade.

During a stop-off in Munich to refuel, the Ambassador prop-plane skidded off the runway on the third attempt to get airborne for the onward flight.

Half of the 44 passengers - including players, United staff, journalists, supporters and crew - were killed.

Actor Jack O'Connell, who has appeared in Skins, will play Bobby Charlton and Sam Claflin from Any Human Heart will play Duncan Edwards :((, who died 15 days after the crash.

The actor playing Busby is yet to be named.

Chris Chibnall, whose credits include Torchwood, has written the series.

Dougray Scott will play Sir Matt Busby in United

Dougray Scott is to star as Manchester United manager Sir Matt Busby in new BBC film United.

The Mission: Impossible II star will appear alongside David Tennant in the new drama about how the 'Busby Babes' became the youngest side to win the football league, before the squad was ripped apart when eight perished in the Munich air crash in 1958.

David will play coach Jimmy Murphy. Murphy was not involved in the fatal crash but helped to piece together the team as Busby recovered from his injuries.

The film draws on first-hand interviews with the survivors and their families to tell the story of the disaster which virtually wiped out the team, and the battle to overcome the devastation.

The team was returning from a European Cup match against Red Star Belgrade and had stopped to refuel in Munich. But the Ambassador prop-plane, operated by BEA, skidded off the runway on the third attempt to get airborne for the onward flight.

Half of the 44 passengers - including players, United staff, journalists, supporters and crew - were killed.

Jack O'Connell, who has appeared in Skins, will play Bobby Charlton and Sam Claflin from Any Human Heart will play Duncan Edwards, who died 15 days after the crash.

Executive producer Simon Heath said: "Chris Chibnall has written an authentic and moving version of this heartbreaking story, which with the help of a great cast, we hope will be a fitting tribute to those who survived and those who lost their lives at Munich."

Munich air tragedy remembered in TV drama

By Neil Smith
Entertainment reporter, BBC News

David Tennant (far left) and Dougray Scott (far right) head up the United cast

The true story of Manchester United's famous 'Busby Babes' and the 1958 plane crash in Munich that claimed eight of their lives is recreated in new BBC film United.

We report from the set of the TV drama, in which Dougray Scott appears as manager Matt Busby and David Tennant plays coach Jimmy Murphy.

On a park in east London, a group of young men are spending a very chilly Monday morning playing football.

It might be any friendly kickabout, were it not for the heavy leather ball, their old-fashioned kits and the cameras filming them do it.

"The ball is not yours, it's the team's!" exhorts a tall onlooker in a blue tracksuit. "The ball is round to go around!"

The accent might sound Welsh but the features are unmistakably Gallifreyan, belonging as they do to former Doctor Who star David Tennant.

http://news.bbcimg.co.uk/media/images/52000000/jpg/_52000213_united5_304.jpg
Scott plays Matt Busby to Tennant's Jimmy Murphy in the drama

On the touchline stands another figure in a brown Trilby and tan overcoat. On closer inspection, he is revealed to be the Scottish actor Dougray Scott.

For the purposes of today, though, he is Matt Busby - the legendary Manchester United manager who will be forever synonymous with the players who perished in the Munich air disaster of February 1958.

At the time of the accident his team were on their way home from a European Cup match against Red Star Belgrade.

After a stop-off in Munich to refuel, the Ambassador prop-plane skidded off the runway on its third attempt to get airborne for the onward flight.

The crash, which resulted in 23 fatalities, remains the most tragic and emotive episode in the club's history.

Small wonder, then, that the makers of United insist they took pains to depict the event both tactfully and sensitively in their 90-minute drama.

"We've made every endeavour to be as accurate and truthful as possible in spirit and intention," says director James Strong.

'Respectful'

"We want this to be a fitting and appropriate memory of these amazing players, this amazing team and this amazing story that a lot of people are aware of."

"It's a fascinating period of Manchester United's history and a fascinating period of football in general," Scott agrees.

"It's an interesting and important story. The film-makers want to pay homage to that and be respectful to all the people involved."

http://news.bbcimg.co.uk/media/images/52000000/jpg/_52000211_united7_304.jpg
Bad weather in the north of England necessitated an extra day of shooting in London

Among those people is Bobby Charlton, who walked away from a disaster in which seven of his team-mates died.

United staff, sports journalists and crew members were also killed. An eighth player, Duncan Edwards, survived the crash but died in hospital later.

United stops just short of recreating the crash, limiting itself to dramatising events immediately preceding and following it.

Yet its scenes of burning debris, dead bodies and wounded victims makes it a harrowing watch every Manchester United fan is sure to have an opinion about.

The drama goes on to show Murphy, who was not involved in the accident, rebuilding the decimated team as Busby recovers from his injuries and Charlton grapples with his grief.

For all the tragedy, though, United is not without humour, scenes in which alcohol is swigged before matches and pipes are puffed in the changing room offering a light-hearted commentary on how the beautiful game has changed over the years.

'Long overdue'

"On a very basic level it's a true story," says Tennant. "But it also looks at the arbitrary nature of fate, the capriciousness of life and the triumph of the human spirit.

"It's extraordinary that the story hasn't been dramatised before. There's never been a straightforward film or TV drama about this extraordinary dramatic story and it's long overdue."

http://news.bbcimg.co.uk/media/images/52000000/jpg/_52000215_united3_224.jpg
Bobby Charlton (Jack O'Connell, held aloft) is a key figure in the story

Most of United was shot before Christmas in and around the North East of England. Because of heavy snow, though, Strong was unable to get footage of his players actually playing.

"Unfortunately we picked the worst winter in living memory so we didn't manage to shoot any football stuff," he explains. "There was literally snow on every single pitch."

"It's a bit tricky when you're making a film about football which, inevitably, has to be shot outside now and again," says Tennant.

"There were a few scenes that had to hang over so we could find a patch of grass to shoot them on."

The scenes in question feature in a training montage that shows Murphy putting his charges through their paces.

The footage is also included in a cinema newsreel about Busby's fresh-faced team shown prior to their European trip - the calm before a storm that to some is as raw today as it was more than five decades ago.

Yet if there is any pressure on Scott's shoulders, the 45-year-old is wearing it well as we take refuge from the cold in his well-heated trailer.

"The only responsibility I feel is to portray Matt Busby as truthfully as possible with all the tools I have available to me," he says in his low Scottish burr.

"I'm not the writer; I'm just an actor. My job as an actor is to try and bring this character to life."

United can be seen on BBC Two on Sunday 24 April at 2100 BST.

United on BBC2

The bare facts are familiar to football fans the world over. On February 6, 1958, BEA Flight 609 carrying the Manchester United team back from their European Cup quarter-final against Red Star Belgrade crashed on take-off at Munich airport, killing 23 passengers, among them eight of the so-called Busby Babes.

The stories of tragedy and heroism behind these headlines are perhaps less familiar. How the team’s 21-year-old star, Duncan Edwards sent a telegram to his landlady after the aborted second take-off telling her of the flight’s cancellation and assuring her he’d be home the following day. How goalkeeper, Harry Gregg battled to drag his fellow passengers from the flaming wreckage to safety. How manager Matt Busby and others found themselves overwhelmed with guilt simply for surviving. And how an unsung coach, Jimmy Murphy, kept the club together as Busby lay close to death in his Munich hospital bed. These tales among others inform United, the first feature film to tell the human story of this landmark in football history.

“It’s the story of the first superstar football club, how boys with so much promise were destroyed by such a random and tragic accident,” explains United’s producer, Julia Stannard. “It’s the human story about what that does to the people involved and their relatives and the community and how you rebuild a team when something like that’s happened.”

It shows the strength of character and the belief this manager has in the quality of this team. You get confidence when you get on a roll. You are not struggling and you get your players back. There are goals in the team and, defensively, you are sound. It is a good feeling. - Edwin van der Sar

Munich Air Disaster: 54 Years Later, Pause and Remember

http://i682.photobucket.com/albums/vv189/zudomiriku/zudo%20II/zudo%20III/79581148_crop_650x440.jpg

Today is one of those days when football fans should put aside their differences, rise above their hatred for other clubs and take time from their day to remember the 1958 Munich Air Disaster that claimed the lives of 23 people, including nine Manchester United players and three Manchester United staff members.

Sir Matt Busby had assembled a team of young players who had taken the English league by storm and won league titles in 1956 and 1957 with an average age of 21 and 22, respectively. They were nicknamed "The Busby Babes" and looked set to dominate English, and possibly European, football for many years to come. Until that fateful night.

United had been in Belgrade to play a European Cup match against Red Star Belgrade, the champions of the country then known as Yugoslavia. Following a 3-3 draw, a result which sent United through to the semifinals of the competition on an aggregate score of 5-4, the team were to return to England to continue their fight for a third successive First Division crown, a feat only two teams had managed previously.

Due to the small size of their aircraft, it was not possible for the team to fly directly from Belgrade to the UK, so a refuelling stopover in Munich was part of the itinerary. That first leg of the trip was carried out free of incident, save for a one-hour delay in take-off due to United's Johnny Berry losing his passport, which was then located.

After refuelling, the plane prepared for take-off, but due to issues with one of the engines, the crew were forced to abandon their first two attempts to get airborne. As the crew prepared for a third attempt, heavy snow began to fall on the runway, and with the addition of rain and strong winds, things became precarious.

The third take-off attempt would prove to be disastrous. A build-up of slush at the end of the runway that prevented the plane from reaching the required speed for take-off, combined with a lack of room to abort the attempt led to one of the heart-wrenching occurrences in the history of English football.

http://i682.photobucket.com/albums/vv189/zudomiriku/zudo%20II/zudo%20III/79687947_crop_340x234.jpg

Twenty-three people lost their lives in the crash that occurred when that third take-off attempt failed and ended in disaster. All told, eight players, three members of staff, two crew members, eight members of the press and two others who were along for the trip died.

The players whose lives were lost were Geoff Bent, Roger Byrne, Eddie Coleman, Mark Jones, David Pegg, Tommy Taylor and Liam Whelan. The eighth player lost as a result of the accident was Duncan Edwards, who survived the accident but died 15 days later from his injuries.

The staff members who passed away were Walter Crickmer, who served as a the club secretary, and two members of Sir Matt Busby's coaching staff, Tom Curry and Bert Whalley.

The crew members lost in the accident were Tom Cable, a cabin steward, and the co-pilot Kenneth Rayment. Rayment was the last person to die. He survived for three weeks but died in the hospital as a result of brain damage stemming from the accident.

The media corps were also strongly affected with the deaths of Alf Clarke of the Manchester Evening Chronicle, Donny Davies of the Manchester Guardian, George Follows of the Daily Herald, Tom Jackson of the Manchester Evening News, Archie Ledbrooke of the Daily Mirror, Henry Rose of the Daily Express, Eric Thompson of the Daily Mail and former England goalkeeper Frank Swift, who was working for the News of The World. Swift died in an ambulance on the way to hospital.

The accident also claimed the lives of Bela Miklos, who was the travel agent who had made the arrangements for the trip, and Willie Satinoff, who was a close personal friend of Sir Matt Busby's and was along for the trip on the invitation of Sir Matt.

http://i682.photobucket.com/albums/vv189/zudomiriku/zudo%20II/zudo%20III/79687223_crop_340x234.jpg

These 23 people lost their lives as a result of that accident, while 21 others managed to survive. Of those 21, only eight survive to this day.

While we should obviously remember the 23 first and foremost, it is also important to spare a thought for the 21 survivors and especially for the eight who remain with us today.

This must surely be the hardest day of the year for them as they remember their friends. Spare a thought also for the families and friends of all 44 people on board who suffered the agony of waiting to hear news of their loved ones, and for those left to grieve and mourn in the aftermath of this horrific accident.

As I said at the beginning, today is a day to put aside your differences with regards to football and unite as football fans to remember those who died. Regardless of your affiliation with a club, regardless of what religion you practice or what God you pray to, today is a day to take a moment and pay tribute to those who died.

Today is a day to remember that there are some things in life that are simply more important than football.

Munich air tragedy remembered in TV drama

By Neil Smith

Ferguson, tentang tragedi Munich yg terjadi saat sang gaffer masih berusia 16 tahun...

Sir Alex Ferguson speaks of hurt over Munich air disaster

BBC - Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has described how he is still affected by the Munich air crash.

Ferguson was 16 and unconnected to the club when eight United players and 15 others died, 55 years ago on Wednesday, as a result of a failed take-off on a slush-covered runway.

"I've been affected since a young boy. It was a sad time," said Ferguson, 71.

"For many it's probably long forgotten but for someone like me who remembers the day, you won't forget it."

Players who died

Geoff Bent: Full-back, aged 25

Roger Byrne: Full-back, aged 28

Eddie Colman: Wing-half, aged 21

Duncan Edwards: Wing-half, aged 21

Mark Jones: Centre-half, aged 24

David Pegg: Outside-left, aged 22

Tommy Taylor: Centre-forward, aged 26

Liam "Billy" Whelan: Inside-forward, aged 22

The British European Airways (BEA) plane crashed during take-off as the Manchester United side returned from a European Cup match against Red Star Belgrade.

The team's plane had stopped to refuel in Munich before completing the journey from the former Yugoslavia back to England.

It had been snowing in Munich and when the pilot attempted to take off for a third time the plane over-shot the runway. A wing hit a house and the plane then struck another building, causing it to catch fire.

Twenty-one people died instantly. Co-pilot Captain Kenneth Rayment died later from the injuries he sustained while Duncan Edwards - described by former United assistant manager/temporary manager Jimmy Murphy as the "greatest of them all" - passed away 15 days after the crash.

At the time, the "Busby Babes" were attempting to become only the third club to win three successive English league titles.

Former Aberdeen and St Mirren boss Ferguson paid tribute to those who helped rebuild the club, which went on to win the European Cup 10 years later.

"How we rose to get over that is remarkable in terms of [manager] Sir Matt [Busby] and Jimmy Murphy and all the staff at the time," he told Football Focus.

"It was a fantastic group of young men who were destined to be great and that was the tragedy of it in how it was taken away from them."

Just 13 days after the crash, the rescheduled fifth-round FA Cup tie with Sheffield Wednesday went ahead at Old Trafford.

The team sheet in the game's programme was poignantly blank but crash survivors Harry Gregg and Bill Foulkes both played, alongside new signings and a mix of junior and reserve players.

The club were given special dispensation to play Stan Crowther, a new signing from Aston Villa, despite the fact he had previously played in that season's competition.

United went on to win 3-0 but were eventually beaten in the FA Cup final by Bolton Wanderers.

Despite the tragedy, the club returned to European action and beat AC Milan 2-1 at Old Trafford in the semi-finals, before a 4-0 defeat in the San Siro.

Ferguson believes the event is one that should not be forgotten.

"When you were caught up in the aftermath of it and the publicity, and when the papers detailed what had happened, you couldn't help but feel that enormous loss for anyone football-minded," he added.

"That has carried on for a long, long time and every year you have to remember that."

How Real Madrid helped to rebuild Manchester United after Munich air disaster

The Madrid president raised funds and staged friendlies in 1958 out of respect for Matt Busby

They are supposed to be the best of enemies: the socialists revered by the Stretford End and the club who were supported by Franco and have raided Manchester United’s academy.

Who can forget the hatred in the words of Sir Alex Ferguson just five years ago when he said, as Real Madrid pursued Cristiano Ronaldo, they were a “mob” to whom he would not sell “a virus”.

But relations between the clubs, which have thawed a little since Jose Mourinho’s arrival in Spain, have a much happier history. Not least in the famous friendship between Santiago Bernabeu, the old Madrid president, whose name was given to the ground United will play in, and Sir Matt Busby 50 years ago.

The story of it is revealed in John Ludden’s book A Tale of Two Cities: Manchester and Madrid 1957-1968 and Ludden told The Independent he was surprised there is some modern animosity between the clubs. “When you look back on the history and you see what Real Madrid did for United after Munich.” he said, “It’s incredible.”

This warmth between Bernabeu and Busby grew out of mutual respect for each other’s teams, and led to some remarkable displays of generosity and charity when United were at their lowest. It grew out of the European Cup semi-final of April 1957, which Madrid won 5-3 on aggregate but were held to a stirring 2-2 draw in the second leg at Old Trafford.

Bernabeu was so impressed by the spirit and quality of United’s young side that he offered Busby a job. The Scot, though, was desperate to win in Europe with United, and said no.

Ten months later, United’s young team was devastated by tragedy. An air crash in Munich, 55 years ago last week, killed eight players, three staff and 10 others. They had just won a European Cup quarter-final. The dream of Busby’s side conquering Europe looked over.

United lost their semi-final to Milan three months after the crash but Milan were beaten 3-2 by Real Madrid in the final. Bernabeu, dedicated the win to his fallen friends from Manchester and even offered United the trophy, though it was turned down.

If that offer was purely symbolic there were material pledges too, most significantly the offer to loan United the world’s finest footballer, Alfredo di Stefano, “the Blond Arrow”, for the 1958-59 season. “Bernabeu went to see Di Stefano about this,” Ludden said. “He was willing to go until the end of the season, United paying half his wages and Madrid the other half. But the Football Association blocked it as he would be taking the place of a potential British player.”

So Madrid helped in different ways. They made a memorial pennant with the names of the Munich dead, called “Champions of Honour”, which was sold in Spain to raise money for United. There were offers to the injured and bereaved to recuperate at Madrid’s luxurious facilities in Spain at no cost.

There was also a series of fund-raising friendlies between the two teams. As well as the human and sporting cost, the Munich disaster had hit United’s finances. Real Madrid usually charged £12,000 for such games, but Bernabeu told United “pay what you can afford”.

These games were not just fund-raisers, though. “United could not even dream of Europe, it was more a case of staying up [in the First Division],” said Ludden. “So Busby’s idea was to keep the idea of Europe alive for the fans and players. It gave the players a level – of Ferenc Puskas and Di Stefano – they had to get to if United were to get back in Europe.”

In October 1959 Madrid won the first friendly 6-1 in front of 63,000 at Old Trafford, with Di Stefano, Puskas and Francisco Gento outstanding.

Madrid won the re-match the following month 6-5, a remarkable game watched by 80,000 entranced fans, who applauded both teams off. That evening Madrid organised a fund-raising banquet for the bereaved families of Munich in which Bernabeu said Busby was “not only the bravest, but the greatest man I have ever met in football”.

For the next friendly, in October 1960, Puskas and Di Stefano were injury doubts. Bernabeu asked Busby if he wanted to postpone the game but United’s manager insisted, saying that Madrid “had become like family”. Puskas and Di Stefano were so impressed they played anyway and helped produce another classic, which Madrid won 3-2.

United were getting closer and in the next friendly in December 1961 they beat Madrid 3-1, and the following September won 2-0 in the Bernabeu. United won the FA Cup that season, the first trophy after Munich, and the title followed before the European Cup in 1968, United overcoming Madrid in the semi-finals on their way to the prize Busby had driven his rebuilt team towards for 10 years.

“If it had to be anyone, then I am glad it was them,” said a gracious Bernabeu afterwards. He had played his own part in their resurrection.

Manchester United Redesign Website, Twitter Feeds to Remember Munich Tragedy

Manchester United are commemorating the anniversary of the Munich air disaster by changing the design of their website and social media feeds for the day.

On 6 February 1958, a plane taking the team back to Manchester after a European match in Belgrade crashed in atrocious conditions after a fuel stop in Munich.

Of the 38 passengers and six crew members, there were 23 fatalities, ripping the heart out of the Manchester United team of the time.

Now, 56 years on, the tragedy is still entwined with the history of the club.

The United Twitter page sounded the start of the remembrance:

Gone for the day, too, were the club crest and colours—replaced instead by the Munich clock, with its hands here fixed to 3:04, the time of the crash:

http://i682.photobucket.com/albums/vv189/zudomiriku/forum/108f7923eac96a41ecc6561c53b92d9f_crop_exact-.png (http://s682.photobucket.com/user/zudomiriku/media/forum/108f7923eac96a41ecc6561c53b92d9f_crop_exact-.png.html)

The Manchester United homepage had a similar look:

http://i682.photobucket.com/albums/vv189/zudomiriku/forum/0e89970aa6a74ae244f23fbf3d6c6cba_crop_exact-.png (http://s682.photobucket.com/user/zudomiriku/media/forum/0e89970aa6a74ae244f23fbf3d6c6cba_crop_exact-.png.html)

United are tweeting about each player to lose their lives in the tragedy, giving a sobering reminder of how many young men lost their lives on that day:

Redknapp recalls the Busby Babes

http://www.manutd.com/~/media/3D49688D042E4A0C94AEFA7F71AF91E9.ashx

Harry Redknapp has recalled watching the Busby Babes' last-ever game together in England as Manchester United defeated Arsenal 5-4 in one of the greatest domestic matches of all time.

The Queens Park Rangers boss was at Highbury to see the memorable fixture and remembers being devastated when news of the air crash in Munich filtered through days later, following the midweek European Cup tie against Red Star Belgrade.

In an exclusive interview with ManUtd.com, the popular manager spoke with real affection for the players he admired as a schoolboy and the team that many tipped to become the finest in the world.

"I think I was 10 at the time and my Dad and I were big Arsenal fans," recalled Redknapp. "We used to stand on the same spot every week and Manchester United coming to Arsenal was the big game.

"United were such a fantastic team with the Busby Babes and it was an amazing game. United came out and just murdered Arsenal, going 3-0 up, but Arsenal came back and it ended up 5-4 and a fantastic game.

"It was a great team. It was amazing to be so young and play for England like Duncan Edwards did and he could have been one of the best players in the world. Eddie Colman, they used to call him 'swivel-hips', what a footballer he was, and Roger Byrne. Harry Gregg is a great character, I still talk to him sometimes, and he was as brave as a lion in goal.

"There were suddenly a lot of kids that came out of the youth team. I think Kenny Morgans played on one wing and Albert Scanlon on the other. Tommy Taylor was an amazing centre-forward - great in the air and strong. There were people like Mark Jones and Bill Foulkes too. It was a great team - they were the best team."

The Munich disaster was to rob football of some of its brightest young talents and the country went into a state of mourning for the tragic loss.

"The whole country was united at that time," explained Redknapp. "There was no viciousness in football then. We'd go to school every day and say prayers for all the people involved in the air crash. It was a very, very sad time in the country. Everybody just followed it on the radio. In those days, you were quite lucky if you had a television. I was just waiting to see whether the players were recovering and also the other people involved. Frank Swift also died and he was one of the greatest goalkeepers in history.

"When I lost my Mum and Dad, a good few years ago, I found a book I'd kept with the pictures every day of Sir Matt Busby and Duncan Edwards, all the boys in the hospital recovering. I've still got it because I took it home with me. They said Duncan was getting better and improving and then, suddenly, he was gone.

"It was a real tragedy, the loss of so many lives and so many great, young footballers in the prime of their lives. It was so sad."

CLUB TO MARK MUNICH ANNIVERSARY

Manchester United will continue to pay tributes to those who lost their lives in the Munich Air Disaster in 1958.

This Monday (6 February) will be the 59th anniversary of the tragedy which claimed the lives of 23 people on the way back to Manchester from Belgrade.

Fans will gather outside Old Trafford from 14:45 GMT on Monday by the Munich memorial, where poems will be cited before a minute's silence at 15:04 - the time of the fatal accident which claimed the lives of eight Busby Babes.

The club have worked with fan groups on the commemorations, which will also include readings from United’s club chaplain, The Pride of Football song and a traditional rendition of The Flowers of Manchester.

Along with the plans to mark the exact anniversary of the tragedy, there will also be a ceremony on Saturday 11 February at Old Trafford, before United take on Watford. Fans can meet for the tribute at the South East corner of the stadium from 13:45, before the 15:00 kick-off.

Players will wear black armbands at the home game against Watford, while the families of those who died in the disaster will be welcomed as special guests of the club.

Supporters who cannot attend either of the ceremonies at Old Trafford, can pay tribute via social media, using the hashtags #BusbyBabes (http://www.unitedindonesia.org/forum/usertag.php?do=list&action=hash&hash=BusbyBabes) and #FlowersOfManchester (http://www.unitedindonesia.org/forum/usertag.php?do=list&action=hash&hash=FlowersOfManchester)

THE DARKEST DAY IN UNITED'S HISTORY

The date of 6 February will forever be circled on the calendars of everyone connected with Manchester United.

On that day in 1958, the darkest day in United's history, 23 people - including eight players and three members of the club's staff - suffered fatal injuries in the Munich air crash.

Flying back from a European Cup tie against Red Star Belgrade, the team plane stopped in Germany to refuel. The first two attempts to take off from Munich airport were aborted; following a third attempt, the plane crashed.

Twenty-one of the people on board died instantly. Aeroplane captain Kenneth Rayment died a few weeks later from the injuries he sustained while Duncan Edwards - one of the eight victims from the team - passed away 15 days after the crash. The tragedy is an indelible part of United's history, as is Sir Matt Busby overcoming his injuries to build another great team which won the European Cup 10 years later.

Roger Byrne (28), Eddie Colman (21), Mark Jones (24), David Pegg (22), Tommy Taylor (26), Geoff Bent (25), Liam Whelan (22) and Duncan Edwards (21) all died, along with club secretary Walter Crickmer, trainer Tom Curry and coach Bert Whalley.

Eight journalists died - Alf Clarke, Tom Jackson, Don Davies, George Fellows, Archie Ledbrook, Eric Thompson, Henry Rose, and Frank Swift who was a former Manchester City player. Plane captain Ken Rayment perished, as did Sir Matt's friend Willie Satinoff. Travel agent Bela Miklos and crew member Tom Cable also died.

We will never forget.

MATA: WE'LL ALWAYS REMEMBER MUNICH

In his latest weekly blog entry, posted on the 59th anniversary of the Munich Air Disaster, Juan Mata pauses to remember those who lost their lives in the tragedy, and he also reflects on the Reds' win at Leicester City on Sunday...

Hi everyone,

First of all, I’d like to remind you that this Monday, 6 February, is a special date for this club and the history of football. It marks the 59th anniversary of the Munich Air Disaster, which claimed the lives of 23 members of the Manchester United expedition on their way back after a European Cup game.

This is always a very emotional day, a date to remember and to honour all of them, and also those who strove to respect and praise that legacy. This is one of the reasons that makes this club so special. There’s no day that you don’t remember that 6 February when walking by Old Trafford. It’s always in our memories.

Talking now about the present, obviously it’s been a good weekend for us. The win in Leicester allows us to look into the future with optimism. The 3-0 score on Sunday confirms many positive things that the team has been doing, and it also improves our efficiency inside the opponent’s box.

It was a very complete game from the whole team. This weekend we have taken the opportunity to reduce the gap with some of our main rivals, and we will try to maintain the same mentality to keep moving up the table.

This week is going to be a bit more quiet than usual, since we only have one game. We were used to a very busy schedule, so having the entire week to prepare a game is going to be different. In this case we will be facing Watford; they are in good moment, but we play at Old Trafford and we are aware of the importance of getting the three points again.

I’m signing off now. Have a nice week, and thank you for all your congratulations after my goal!

Hugs,

Juan

FANS GATHER TO REMEMBER MUNICH

Manchester United supporters congregated at Old Trafford on Monday afternoon as the club staged the first of its events marking the 59th anniversary of the Munich Air Disaster.

Club chaplain Reverend John Boyers led a short but poignant service in memory of the 23 people, including eight United players and three officials, who died after a plane carrying the team home from a European Cup match in Belgrade crashed at Munich on 6 February 1958.

Day-to-day operations at the club ceased for a few minutes as staff joined supporters in observing a minute's silence at four minutes past three - the time of the crash - and in listening to renditions of The Flowers of Manchester and The Pride Of Football, tributes sung by local folk singer and United season-ticket holder Pete Martin.

A further ceremony at Old Trafford will take place on Saturday 11 February, with fans invited to assemble at the South East corner of the stadium from 13:45 GMT, prior to the home match against Watford. The United players will wear black armbands during the Premier League fixture and the families of those who died in the disaster will be welcomed as special guests of the club.

The 21 survivors included Sir Bobby Charlton, who was 20 at the time and went on to become one of England's finest players - winning the 1966 World Cup - and manager Matt Busby.

Current United captain Wayne Rooney led the tributes on social media as club heroes past and present paid their respects.

Fans can pay their respects outside the ground on the same day, from 1.30pm, with the event consisting of readings and prayers, along with a rendition of the Flowers of Manchester song under the Munich plaque at Old Trafford.

Munich hero Harry Gregg is to return to Manchester United for the first time in almost a decade for next week's 60th anniversary of the disaster.

Gregg, 85, is one of only two living survivors of the crash. The other is current United ambassador Sir Bobby Charlton.

The former United goalkeeper lives near Coleraine in his native Northern Ireland but will make the journey for a memorial service at Old Trafford next Tuesday.

The former Northern Ireland international was a hero the night the plane, bringing Sir Matt Busby's team home from a European Cup tie in Belgrade, crashed after a refuelling stop in Munich on February 6, 1958.

Gregg escaped from the wreckage but returned to drag Dennis Viollet and Charlton free.

He also saved the lives of Czech passenger Verena Lukic and her baby, Vesna.

He returned to action 13 days later, although was subsequently diagnosed with a fractured skull.

Sir Bobby Charlton has never shaken off the sense of guilt of surviving the Munich air disaster... the Manchester United legend still pauses by pictures of his team-mates at Old Trafford

* Tuesday, February 6 will mark the 60th anniversary of the 1958 air disaster
* Sir Bobby Charlton was one of only nine Manchester United players to survive
* The United legend still lives with the guilt of having seen team-mates perish

For Sir Bobby Charlton these anniversaries come and go like leaves falling from trees as the nights grow longer.

Like the bodies of his soul mates in the brotherhood of Sir Matt Busby’s Babes lying scattered in the snows of Munich, beside the wreckage of their shattered aircraft.

To dare to paraphrase Shakespeare: Like football glorious as summer made the winter of their destruction.

Once again, Sir Bobby will be standing in memory of those in his dazzling Manchester United team who did not come all the way home from thrilling European Cup success in Belgrade.

Not that he ever forgets.

https://s9.postimg.org/jx6q8jji7/0045_AE3400000578-0-image-a-2_1517534804387.jpg (https://postimages.org/)
Once again, Sir Bobby will be standing in memory of his former team-mates on Tuesday

On the days he goes to Old Trafford, as a club ambassador now, he pauses beside the photograph of the young men whose lives were lost in a disaster which struck the world of football silent.

On Tuesday, 60 years on from the dark day of February 6, 1958, a service inside the ground will include a minute’s silence beginning at 3.04pm, the exact time of the crash.

Still, Sir Bobby has not fully shaken off his sense of guilt at going on to achieve so much while the dreams of so many friends and team-mates perished so tragically.

‘Why me?’ he always asks himself. ‘Why did I survive?’

The practical reason was that the lucky ones were occupying the rearward facing seats as Airspeed Ambassador Flight 609 ploughed into slush at the end of the runway at its third attempt to take off and crashed through a perimeter fence.

The emotional answer is that those who perished could not have asked for anyone better to carry the torch of their memory down the years.

Charlton, 80 now, keeps that poignant flame alive for the seven who died on impact: Geoff Bent, Roger Byrne, Eddie Colman, Mark Jones, David Pegg, Tommy Taylor, Billy Whelan.

And for the youngest Babe of all, whose fight for life ended in a Bavarian hospital 15 days later.

In terms of magnitude weighed by loss of talent, the deepest of those aches in his heart belongs to the most phenomenal prodigy of them all.

Duncan Edwards is described by Sir Bobby as ‘a colossus.’

At 21, Edwards had already made 177 appearances for United, winning two Football League titles, and played 18 times for England.

Charlton says: ‘Just a boy. But what a boy. Look at our team pictures when he was only 16 and he was already the giant on the end of the row.

‘When we became England’s pioneers in the European Cup he was already the complete footballer. Mighty in the air. Unbreakable in the tackle. Rampaging tirelessly across the pitch. Perfect first touch followed by raking 40-50 yard passes with either foot. Deadly in front of goal. I would look at him in awe.

‘Ask me who is the greatest footballer I ever played with. Ask me who is the greatest footballer I ever played against. Ask me who is the greatest footballer the world has ever seen.

Bill Foulkes (left) and Harry Gregg (right) survey the crash scene following the disaster

‘Same answer: Duncan Edwards. Think about that. Think that I played with Bobby Moore, George Best and Denis Law. Then remember that I played against Pele.’

So profound was his sense of loss that Charlton felt he could never play again.

Sir Matt Busby, the legendary manager and another survivor, was struggling to dissuade him from premature retirement. The members of the team patched up by Busby had no more effect when the recovering Charlton visited them in the dressing room before matches during his recovery from the head wounds and trauma suffered when his seat with him strapped in it was thrown from the plane onto the ice.

Not until he went to visit the humble but loving family home in Ashburton, Northumberland where he and his brother Jack grew into footballers did he find his reason to lace up the boots again.

When he stepped out into the gritty alleyway behind the house he saw a boy kicking a ball against a wall. The lad looked up, recognised his local hero and tapped the ball towards him. Charlton felt obliged to return the pass.

It was the first emotional step on the road back to winning the 1966 World Cup with England then helping United become the first English club to win the European Cup, 10 years to the season after he and the rest of the Babes had that destiny torn from them.

Eight never completed the return journey from Belgrade where, having beaten Red Star at Old Trafford in the first leg of the quarter-final, they drew a thriller 3-3.

Manchester United's 'Busby Babes' squad lost eight players due to the tragedy in Munich

Of the players who lived, only two are left standing. Sir Bobby and the heroic goalkeeper whose safe hands dragged Charlton and Dennis Viollet further away from the wreckage, seats and all, for fear the broken aircraft would explode. Then went back into those smouldering remains to save others.

Harry Gregg, at 85, is making Tuesday’s anniversary pilgrimage from his home in Northern Ireland.

There will be tears and tender memories for the families of the fallen – legendary football writers like the Mail’s own Eric Thompson and Henry Rose of the Express among them - and the heirs to Old Trafford dynasty.

JOSE: MUNICH IS PART OF MY LIFE

Jose Mourinho has revealed how the Munich Air Disaster has always been part of his life, acknowledging that it has become even more important and poignant since he became Manchester United manager.

There will be a minute's silence before Saturday's match at home to Huddersfield Town as the club pays tribute to those that perished on that fateful day 60 years ago.

Mourinho admits it will be an emotional occasion for everyone connected to United, but he hopes the players can honour those who lost their lives in the most fitting way possible - with a victory.

"I think it should affect [the players] in a positive way," he told MUTV. "If we believe they are watching the match I think it's one more reason for a happy day and for a good performance and a manifestation of United colours. So yes, of course a minute of silence for them and for the families, but I think they would love happiness, joy, a Manchester United victory, points, goals... I think they would love that.

"Even before I became Manchester United manager it was part of my life as a sportsman. Obviously I wasn't even born but I knew everything about it and the amazing reaction Manchester United had after that and to honour the people's memory always. So as Manchester United manager it obviously becomes more important and for me and for every player tomorrow is a special day."

Mourinho added in his pre-match press conference: "It's one of the biggest tragedies but also, at the same time, it's a crucial point in Manchester United's history - the reaction, the strength, the union after that situation.

"I think tomorrow is an amazing day to show the respect, to show the passion for the club, the respect for them [the victims], the respect for their families and I think it's a day to play well. I think it's a day to bring happiness, to bring joy, for people to be together enjoying the game and at the same time showing all the respect for the people and their families."

Manchester United paid tribute to those affected by the Munich Air Disaster 60 years ago during emotional scenes at Old Trafford.

The fans held their annual service by the Munich clock, singing the 'Flowers of Manchester' and taking time to remember those who lost their lives in the tragic event.

Supporters inside the ground received a complimentary copy of United Review and a special hardback book, before a surfer banner was unveiled at the Stretford End in tribute to the legendary Busby Babes.

Everybody inside the stadium, including both sets of players, then observed a poignant minute's silence ahead of kick-off against Huddersfield Town.

A special ceremony is being held at the ground on Tuesday, while commemorative events are also taking place in Munich and Belgrade, where the Under-19s are on UEFA Youth League duty against Brodarac.

MATA: MUNICH IS ALWAYS IN OUR MEMORY

Each and every Monday during the season, Manchester United star Juan Mata pens a personal blog. In his latest entry, the Spanish maestro reflects on an emotional day at Old Trafford on Saturday…

Hi everyone,

When you have a painful defeat like the one we had in midweek against Tottenham, all you want is for the next game to start as soon as possible. We needed to show the character of the team and to react in front of our fans in order to go back to the winning path. And so we did.

I think it was a complete performance, one of those days when the game is under your control, and we managed to close it in time to add the three points. I hope we can do the same against Newcastle this coming weekend. We really enjoyed ourselves on the pitch, especially during the second half, and eventually we could dedicate the victory to the victims (and their families) of that fateful day in Munich.

But the day that is absolutely shown in red on this week's calendar is on Tuesday, a day that marks the 60th anniversary of the air disaster. The victims will never be forgotten, they will always be remembered and will be a part of United's history forever. The passion, determination and courage shown by the club to carry on in those horrible moments have left an indelible mark forever.

The “Flowers of Manchester” will always be with us. By the way, the minute of silence before our game was simply spectacular… it is because of this kind of thing that this club is so special.

Hugs,

Juan

RASHFORD: WHAT MUNICH MEANS TO ME

Manchester United will pay its respects to those affected by the Munich Air Disaster on Tuesday, 60 years to the day since the tragedy.

On 6 February 1958, the darkest day in United’s history, 23 people – including eight players and three members of the club’s staff – suffered fatal injuries in the Munich air crash.

Ahead of this year’s significant anniversary, Marcus Rashford spoke exclusively to United Review to discuss when he first became aware of the tragedy and how the legacy of the Busby Babes lives on in players like him.

It promises to be an emotional occasion as the club marks Tuesday’s 60th anniversary of the Munich Air Disaster. When were you first told about the Busby Babes and the air crash?
It was when I was about seven or eight. There were already little things about it around [the club] at that age, but then you start to learn more about it, and when you got to 15 or 16, that was when [former Academy coach] Paul McGuinness really started to bring it to our attention. We used to watch a lot of the videos of games, especially from their FA Youth Cup runs, so we could see footage of what these players were like when they were young. It’s so close to home, it touches your heart and helps you understand it, even though you weren’t there.

Duncan Edwards and Eddie Colman were among the players who lost their lives, and at the age of 21, barely older than you are. Does that make it possible to truly understand what a tragic event it was?
It was a very sad event and nobody deserves that type of thing to happen to them. But it happened, unfortunately, and the club has been amazing in the way it has bred players ever since in that same manner, like we produced the Busby Babes.

We know United do give chances to homegrown youngsters. The newly refurbished area in the Academy building shows off images of current first-teamers Paul Pogba, Jesse Lingard and yourself as evidence of this...
I think it’s good for us. It’s a proud moment to know you are going to be pictured on the wall but I believe it’s more for the younger players. When they come into training here, they can see us on the wall and they know playing for the first team is possible. It’s a difficult thing to do – if you don’t have people telling you the right things, you can fall off course, so it’s just little things like that. Also, you can see coverage of the Busby Babes and older players. When you’re younger, you can come up to your parents afterwards and see these types of graphics and photos on the wall and it helps gives you the confidence that it can be done.

On days like this, do you think it’s fair to say you’re the sort of player who embodies Sir Matt Busby’s legacy because you seem to play with such freedom?
Yeah, I think you can play here with freedom but it is within a structure. It has always been like that, since when I was young. Yes, you can do what you want but it has to be in the right areas. You have always been given that freedom and responsibility to go out and express yourself on the pitch.

SIR ALEX'S TRIBUTE TO THE BUSBY BABES

Manchester United will come together on Tuesday afternoon to pay tribute to those affected by the Munich Air Disaster on the 60th anniversary of the tragedy.

On 6 February 1958, 23 people – including eight United players and three club officials – were fatally injured when the plane taking them home from Belgrade crashed after refuelling in Germany.

Six decades on, Sir Alex Ferguson will be among those in attendance at a commemorative service inside Old Trafford to remember the victims.

Ahead of this year's significant anniversary, the former manager spoke exclusively to United Review to give a heartfelt personal account of how the tragedy affected him and to share his thoughts on the legacy of Sir Matt Busby's great young team, the Busby Babes.

“On the day of the Munich Air Disaster, I was in the library studying for my exams," recalled Sir Alex. "I used to train two or three nights a week with Queen’s Park, so after I’d finished my work I went along to the training ground, but when I arrived, people were crying. These were grown men. There was a lot of sorrow in the dressing room, so much so that they cancelled training that night. It was a really emotional time for anybody who was a football fan. I’m sure the whole public in Manchester felt that way, and Matt Busby carried great resonance for the people in Scotland, so it was keenly felt up there, too.

"I’d seen Manchester United play in the Coronation Cup in 1953. It was held in Glasgow to mark the Queen’s coronation, and it featured four English teams and four Scottish teams. I went to watch United against Rangers. The bulk of the United side was made of the remnants of the 1948 FA Cup-winning team – the likes of Jack Rowley, Stan Pearson, Jack Crompton – but at outside-left there was Roger Byrne, and soon the team was full of young players like Roger.

"Not long after that, not only were you drawn to the fact that Matt Busby was manager, you were attracted to the fact that the Busby Babes were suddenly in the semi-finals of the European Cup against Real Madrid. They didn’t disgrace themselves at all, either; they were absolutely brilliant, and that was their first experience of Europe.

"The philosophy and belief of producing young players to play for Manchester United was a big thing at the time. The team which won the 1948 FA Cup final was mature, there were no kids in there, but seven years later Matt and Jimmy Murphy had a formation of all these young players playing together. It takes a brave person to do that. You’re in an industry where it’s all about the results, and that’s why most managers have to rely on their first team to keep them in a job, and there’s absolutely no compunction about that; it’s a fact of life. To build a football club through young people is the braver thing to do, and actually it’s the correct thing to do because once you’ve got a foundation, then you can rely on that for a few years.

"Matt never spoke to me about Munich, but he spoke about Duncan Edwards, David Pegg, Eddie Colman and all the boys who passed away. The one who did speak a lot about it was Jimmy Murphy. Jimmy did a bit of scouting for me and he always spoke very openly about the Babes. He always had a tear in his eye by the end of the discussion because he was a very emotional guy.

"While I was Manchester United manager, the Babes were always a reference point for us, in terms of having belief and trust in what young players can do and building a loyalty base from there. Not only that, the Babes made the history of Manchester United, without question. Okay, there had been the 1948 FA Cup and some success in the distant past, but actually the history which was made through that particular period of Matt playing those young players is really the history of Manchester United. A decade on, Matt won the European Cup while playing the same philosophy, using players who had been produced by the club, apart from Paddy Crerand and Alex Stepney [who had been transferred into the club]. It’s incredible.

"The Babes are what gives this club such a fantastic romance, in terms of how they played the game and how they generated this thread of youth throughout the club. The spirit of the club is created by all these young players, and that began back then."

TELLING THE STORY OF MUNICH

Old Trafford will fall silent again on Tuesday afternoon to mark 60 years to the day since the Munich Air Disaster, a tragedy that eventually claimed the lives of 23 people including eight Manchester United players and three club officials.

The legacy of 6 February 1958 is still as strong and raw today as it was in the aftermath of the aviation accident. John Howson was a young United supporter at the time and long before the days of rolling 24-hour television news, he found himself being drawn to the stadium in search of more information after hearing initial reports of the crash on the radio.

Six decades later, the need to educate the next generation of United fans about Munich and its impact is as strong as ever. For his part in this, John took his great grandson Jayden on a tour of Old Trafford so the 11-year-old could learn more about the tragic events which have shaped the club’s modern history.

THE DARKEST DAY IN UNITED'S HISTORY

The date of 6 February will forever be circled on the calendars of everyone connected with Manchester United.

On that day in 1958, the darkest day in United's history, 23 people - including eight players and three members of the club's staff - suffered fatal injuries in the Munich Air Disaster.

The team had been travelling back from a European Cup tie against Red Star Belgrade when their aircraft stopped in Germany to refuel. The first two attempts to take off from Munich airport were aborted; following a third attempt, the plane crashed.

The eight players who perished were Geoff Bent (25), Roger Byrne (aged 28), Eddie Colman (21), Duncan Edwards (21), Mark Jones (24), David Pegg (22), Tommy Taylor (26) and Liam Whelan (22). Edwards, considered by many to be the finest player of his generation, died 15 days after the accident.

The three club officials who were killed were secretary Walter Crickmer, trainer Tom Curry and coach Bert Whalley. Eight journalists died - Alf Clarke, Donny Davies, George Follows, Tom Jackson, Archie Ledbrooke, Henry Rose, Eric Thompson and former Manchester City goalkeeper Frank Swift.

Aircraft captain Ken Rayment, fellow crew member Tom Cable, travel agent Bela Miklos and supporter Willie Satinoff, a friend of United manager Sir Matt Busby, were also victims of the terrible tragedy.

The Munich Air Disaster is an indelible part of United's history, as is Sir Matt overcoming his crash injuries to work alongside his assistant Jimmy Murphy and build another great team which won the European Cup 10 years later.

We will never forget.

HOW THE BUSBY BABES THRILLED US

The Manchester United team decimated in Munich on that fateful day in 1958 has become the subject of football folklore.

Here, on the 60th anniversary of the tragedy, we present the personal memories of three men who saw what made the Busby Babes so unique…

Ken Merrett, Manchester United club secretary from 1988 to 2007

"United were unquestionably the glamour team of the 1950s. Everyone knew all about them. I remember going to watch the European Cup tie against Athletic Bilbao at Maine Road in 1957, and that was just an incredible evening. United were 5-3 down from the first leg but won 3-0 in the second leg to go through. The atmosphere that night was unbelievable. The only thing I can compare it to was the famous Cup Winners' Cup tie at Old Trafford against Barcelona in 1984, when Bryan Robson scored twice and we came from behind to win 3-2 on aggregate.

"That night at Maine Road against Bilbao was on the same level. There were so many superb players in Sir Matt Busby’s team, it was a thrill to watch them. Tommy Taylor, Roger Byrne and Duncan Edwards were all England internationals, but there was an enormous buzz around the whole club at the time, not just the first team.

"I had a part-time job selling tea, coffee, Oxo, pies and so on at Old Trafford, and that wasn’t just for senior games; the club would ask me to come in for the Reserve team games as well, because there were so many fans coming along to watch, trying to spot the next stars coming through. I remember watching Alex Dawson, Mark Pearson and other lads in the Reserves, and then suddenly they were in the first team, replacing some of the players we had lost at Munich."

David Meek, Manchester Evening News football reporter from 1958 to 1995

"I remember going along to watch the Babes play and it was such a thrill, both in terms of the atmosphere and in terms of the football on show. We take floodlit football for granted nowadays, but back then it was new and exciting, and the players reflected this in the way they played the game. I think the crowd reflected it as well because they were eager to get involved in the match. It wasn’t just a group of bystanders; the United fans at this stage became quite passionate.

"I think the fans recognised that it was a special time. They possibly didn’t realise the depth of the revolution, but they certainly knew it was something new, and that all started with Manchester United. It was reflected by the fans who regarded it as a journey. It was the same for the players. I remember Bobby Charlton telling me: ‘You’ve got to remember that European football was a big adventure for the players. It was something new, that’s why we got so excited about it.’

"For me, Duncan Edwards was the face of the Babes. He was the outstanding individual player who really looked the part. He had a physique that was like a superman. He played like a superman. He was so young when all this was happening to him, but he took it in his stride. It’s unfair to just single out one player, though, because it wasn’t just Duncan. That Busby Babes team was symbolic of what Matt Busby was doing at Manchester United, creating his own players in the image of himself, to play as he wanted them to play. The whole team was brilliant. Bobby Charlton was just coming into prominence, Dennis Viollet was a key part of it, Eddie Colman – snakehips – was brilliant, and the whole team was fantastic.

"Apart from Berry, Gregg and Taylor, it was almost entirely a homegrown team and it had the kind of loyalty and dedication that you often get with homegrown teams. I think that was one of the factors that made Matt build his career around developing his own players. He spotted them, signed them, brought them up and he made them into footballers. It was just thrilling to witness that."

Ken Ramsden, Manchester United club secretary from 2007 to 2010

"The Busby Babes signified something new in football, because up to that point, football had been played by men who were older. Roger Byrne and Johnny Berry were slightly senior, but for the most part this was a very young team, full of of local boys, so you could identify with them. You also saw more of them around Manchester. They’d travel to matches by bus or even on bikes, they went into local shops, so you felt as if you knew them. My mother worked in the laundry room at the stadium, so during school holidays I’d go down to the ground to see if she was about so I could get in and get a drink. I’d often see the players because they trained there in those days. They were always around, just so full of life and full of football.

"The world we live in now, we’d be looking ahead to the end of this season, next season, two years on and so on, but back then you really did live for the moment and you just enjoyed what you saw. Of course, we might have enjoyed it even more if we knew it was going to be so short-lived, but it was widely recognised that it was the start of something new and unique."

UNITED ACADEMY PAY RESPECTS IN BELGRADE

Manchester United Academy staff are in Belgrade for Wednesday's UEFA Youth League tie against Brodarac and have visited the Hotel Majestic, where the Busby Babes stayed after their final match together against Red Star six decades ago.

Distinguished guests attended a reception on Monday evening, in the same room where Sir Matt Busby and his side had dinner after securing progress in the European Cup with a thrilling 3-3 draw.

The United squad signed the hotel menu on that fateful night in February 1958 and it is clear the venue still mourns their loss, 60 years after 23 people, including eight players, suffered fatal injuries when the plane taking them home crashed in Munich.

Vladica Popovic, now 82, played for Red Star in that historic match against United and was one of the VIPs at Monday's event, which featured emotional speeches from United Academy staff Tony Whelan and Dave Bushell. Another ex-Red Star man, Dan Tana, also a former owner of Brentford Football Club in London, spoke about his remarkable careers in football and the film industry. He chatted with the widow of the late United goalkeeper and coach Jack Crompton - Sheila is a special guest of the party that travelled from Manchester.

The Brodarac and United Under-19 squads were shown video footage of the Busby Babes in action and the youngsters learned more about the Munich Air Disaster by watching MUTV's acclaimed documentary. The Serbian players then handed gifts to their English counterparts, while Nicky Butt, the Reds' Head of Academy, presented framed photographs to Popovic and the club's hosts.

With club statistician Cliff Butler on hand to impart his remarkable knowledge, it was a special occasion and one that illustrated the great respect in which the Reds are held in his particular part of the world, with more events planned on Tuesday.

CARRICK: A FITTING AND BEAUTIFUL SERVICE

Manchester United club captain Michael Carrick has described the ceremony at Old Trafford to mark 60 years since the Munich Air Disaster as a "very fitting and beautiful service".

The Reds skipper joined manager Jose Mourinho in laying a wreath on stage following readings from Sir Alex Ferguson, executive vice chairman Ed Woodward and club director Michael Edelson.

Carrick spoke to MUTV after a highly emotional event and talked about how special it was for everyone concerned.

"It was very fitting, a beautiful service - powerful and emotional," he admitted. "For me, it was emotional sitting next to Sir Bobby [Charlton] and trying to come to terms with what he's been through and what was going through his mind. It was tough but a pleasure to be part of it and as I said I thought it was very fitting.

"When I came to the club I was aware of it [the disaster], I'd heard the stories and my Dad had told me about it, but it wasn't until I came to the club that you have that feeling of what it means to everyone here and how important it is.

"Today was very powerful and for the younger lads and for the lads who haven't been at the club too long it's huge," he added. "It's great that everyone could be here together today because we're all in it together, it's what makes this great club so special. It was such a tragic event and a very sad event, but it's commemorated in such a great way and that carries on year after year and always will."

HOW WE REMEMBERED MUNICH

It was an emotional day for everyone connected to Manchester United on Tuesday as the club marked the 60th anniversary of the Munich Air Disaster.

Old Trafford staged a special ceremony which was attended by Reds legends including Sir Bobby Charlton, Harry Gregg and former manager Sir Alex Ferguson as well as Jose Mourinho and his first-team squad, United staff and thousands of supporters who gathered in the East Stand.

The service led by club chaplain Reverend John Boyers featured a performance by the Manchester United Foundation choir, readings and prayers and a minute's silence in memory of the 23 people who lost their lives in the 1958 tragedy.

HOW MUNICH WILL BE REMEMBERED TONIGHT

The Munich Air Disaster, the darkest day in the history of Manchester United, will be commemorated before this evening's Premier League game against Burnley at Old Trafford - the home fixture that falls closest to the anniversary, 6 February.

Tributes to the 23 people who suffered fatal injuries in the 1958 plane crash will include the United players wearing black armbands, while a giant banner showing the 'Busby Babes' side lining up for their final match before the tragedy will be passed across the Stretford End as tonight's teams take to the field.

Families of the victims, who included eight United players and three officials, will attend the game as guests of the club.

Meanwhile, supporters will gather under the Munich memorial plaque and clock on the stadium's main forecourt, for a ceremony led by Rev. John Boyers that will be a mixture of poems, songs and prayers, including the famous folk song, The Flowers of Manchester. The ceremony is led by the fans behind the munich58.co.uk website and is due to start at 18:30 GMT this evening.

A moment of reflection will be observed shortly before kick-off at 20:00 GMT, not only in remembrance for Munich but also as a mark of respect for the Cardiff City player Emiliano Sala and pilot David Ibbotson, whose plane went missing while en route from Nantes to South Wales last week.

MUNICH STREET SIGN ADDED TO UNITED MUSEUM

There is a corner of Munich that will forever be Manchester. It’s a small square in the Trudering area of the Bavarian city, close to where flight BEA 609 crashed and came to rest that fateful afternoon of 6 February 1958, a place known as Manchesterplatz.

The small square was given the name when a permanent memorial was placed on the site in September 2004, unveiled in a ceremony attended by Sir Bobby Charlton and other Manchester United officials, plus Karl-Heinz Rummenigge and representatives of Bayern Munich.

The monument is a football pitch etched with the names of the 23 people who lost their lives – including eight players and three United staff – and has a plaque thanking the people of Munich for their care and support in the immediate aftermath and years since the tragic accident.

Earlier this month, members of the Manchester Munich Memorial Foundation, a supporter-run charity dedicated to preserving the memory of the Busby Babes, presented the original Manchesterplatz street sign to the club. Given to them by the Bayern fan group, the Munich Red Docs, at a fundraising event last year, the decision was taken that the gift, being for all United fans, be passed on to the club.

MMMF directors Pat Burns and Tony Crook handed the sign over to curator of the club’s museum, Mark Wylie (pictured), and it is now on display in the club museum.

A new sign is in place in the square in Trudering, where many supporters are expected to visit once again today on the 61st anniversary of the crash.

CLUB REMEMBERS MUNICH AIR DISASTER IN BELGRADE

A commemoration ceremony was held in Belgrade, Serbia, on Thursday morning to remember those who were lost in the 1958 Munich Air Disaster.

The event was held at Partizan Stadium ahead of Manchester United contesting a fixture in the city for only the second time since tragedy struck 61 years ago.

Attendees from the club, the Manchester Munich Memorial Foundation and Sian MacLeod, UK Ambassador to Serbia, gathered in the centre circle to hear a short address from executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward.

Club legends Bryan Robson and Mickey Thomas then laid down a wreath, before a minute’s silence was held to remember the 23 people who were killed as a result of the disaster.

Executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward said:

“It was incredibly important to come here and mark the occasion. As soon as the draw happened, our attention turned to wanting to remember those who lost their lives in 1958. This was the last place, on this very ground, against Red Star Belgrade, when they played as a team together before they got on that fateful plane to stop over in Munich and tragedy struck. So for us as a club, there is a game tonight but for us the trip is also important for remembering those who lost their lives and paying respects, which we have just done by laying the wreath.”

Bryan Robson also said:

“You can feel the emotion. When you have been at the club for as long as we have, you get that history and you have met a lot of the families who have lost people in the Munich Air Disaster. I have even heard Bobby Charlton talk about the game when they were over here in 1958. It was supposed to be a great performance by the team and you can sense that when you come into the stadium.”

WE WILL REMEMBER THEM

On Wednesday 5 February 1958, Matt Busby’s United drew 3-3 against Red Star Belgrade to go through to the European Cup semi-finals. The next day, they set off from Belgrade back to Manchester. After stopping to refuel in Munich, in snowy conditions, tragedy occurred.

Twenty-three people were killed as a result of the Munich Air Disaster, including eight players, three other employees and a supporter of this great club.

The club thanks its friends at Partizan and UEFA for facilitating this ceremony and welcoming representatives from the Manchester Munich Memorial Foundation, as well as the UK Embassy. Today, we remember:

The eight journalists – Alf Clarke, Don Davies, George Follows, Tom Jackson, Archie Ledbrooke, Henry Rose, Eric Thompson and Frank Swift.

We remember Captain Ken Rayment the co-pilot, Tommy Cable, one of the stewards, and Bela Miklos, the travel agent. And those who were part of United - club secretary Walter Crickmer, chief coach Bert Wally, trainer Tom Curry and Willie Satinoff, a close friend and supporter of United.

We especially remember the eight Busby Babes who so tragically died - Geoff Bent, Roger Byrne, Eddie Colman, Duncan Edwards, Mark Jones, David Pegg, Tommy Taylor and Liam ‘Billy’ Whelan.

FOREVER REMEMBERED

The date of 6 February will forever be circled on the calendars of everyone connected with Manchester United.

On that day in 1958, the darkest day in United's history, 23 people - including eight players and three members of the club's staff - suffered fatal injuries in the Munich Air Disaster.

The team had been travelling back from a European Cup tie against Red Star Belgrade when their aircraft stopped in Germany to refuel. The first two attempts to take off from Munich airport were aborted; following a third attempt, the plane crashed.

The eight players who perished were Geoff Bent (aged 25), Roger Byrne (28), Eddie Colman (21), Duncan Edwards (21), Mark Jones (24), David Pegg (22), Tommy Taylor (26) and Liam Whelan (22).

OLD TRAFFORD PAYS TRIBUTE

A short commemorative service will be held on the stadium forecourt this afternoon (Thursday), enabling supporters and club staff to gather and pay their respects under the Munich memorial clock.

The service, which has been organised by the fans behind the munich58.co.uk website, will be led by Reverend John Boyers and will feature poems, prayers and songs including the famous folk anthem, The Flowers of Manchester.

The ceremony is due to start at 14:45 GMT and will be shown live on MUTV and in our free Official App.

HOW UNITED FANS ARE PRESERVING THE BABES’ LEGACY

Two years ago, the 60th anniversary of the Munich Air Disaster drew the biggest ever gathering of Manchester United supporters to the site of the tragedy in Trudering, underlining just how vividly the Busby Babes remain alive in the hearts and minds of our fan base.

The ceremony at Manchesterplatz that year was organised and led by the Manchester Munich Memorial Foundation, a not-for-profit company set up by longstanding Reds. Their aim? Simply to preserve the Babes’ legacy for future generations, while raising money to help charities in Manchester, Munich and Belgrade.

“We’re just a group of diehard United fans,” explains chairman Pat Burns. “We wanted to do something really special for the 60th anniversary, because we know that in another 10 years we might not be here.

“From that, we decided to do something; to build a legacy to hand on to future generations. Because, for us, United and the Babes go hand in glove. They’re part of our DNA. They’re the reason why virtually every fan I know supports United. It’s the story we were brought up on.”

For this year’s 62nd anniversary, MMMF representatives travelled to Belgrade to present a brass plaque to the Majestic Hotel – where the Babes spent their final night – to go on permanent display in the hotel’s foyer.

The delegation then headed to Munich, where around 100-200 Reds were expected to attend the MMMF-led ceremony and watch the foundation stone for a new memorabilia showcase being laid, ahead of a two minutes’ silence and the traditional singing of The Flowers of Manchester.

But the group’s primary concern is the future. The foundation has applied for charity status and wants to spread awareness of their work.

“We raise money simply from asking United fans to support us,” says Burns. “We run an annual JustGiving appeal in January and February, raise money on the away-day coaches, and run an annual dinner.

“The support for the last dinner was amazing. We had 170 people and raised over £9,000, which is brilliant. We had Lou Macari, Arthur Albiston, Paddy Crerand, plus Harry Gregg’s daughter and Jimmy Murphy’s son – who are going to be our patrons. That’s how close-knit we want it. This whole thing is built around the Babes, the Babes’ families and United fans.”

So far, money has gone to the Depaul charity in Manchester — which helps homeless young people – and football charities in both Munich and Belgrade. The work in Serbia was undertaken at the personal behest of Harry Gregg.

“It’s great if you’re a United supporter,” enthuses Burns. “It’s even better if you know our history, where we came from, and what a pioneer Matt Busby was.

“So go to our website – see what we do to preserve that legacy. It’s part of your family; it’s part of the United family. If you like it, if you’ve got a passion for this, we are looking for the people who might follow us, who might be in their teens, twenties and thirties. We would happily talk to anybody that would like to get involved.

“Personally, I would love every United fan to know about us and for those who can to show a little bit of support. So get in touch, come to one of our dinners, donate to our JustGiving appeal. But, more importantly, learn about us and share your thoughts and ideas.”

HOW ARSENAL PAID TRIBUTE TO UNITED IN 1958

In the immediate aftermath of the tragic events of 6 February 1958, the entire footballing community came together in mourning for those lost, and in support of Manchester United in the club's darkest hour.

One of the most poignant tributes came from Arsenal, our age-old rivals who had provided the final opposition on English soil for Matt Busby’s brilliant young team just five days before their plane crashed in Munich.

The Gunners set aside two pages in the match programme for their next home game against Bolton Wanderers on 18 February, to echo the thoughts being shared across the sporting world.

Entitled 'Tribute to Manchester United', it read: “The air disaster which struck Manchester United on their way home from Yugoslavia on Thursday 6th February, 1958, is a shattering blow to English football. Seldom, if ever, has such a shock hit British sport as did this tragedy.

“Famous players and well-known sporting personalities are dead and others are injured. That much-admired and well-known team, variously known as ‘Busby’s Babes’ and ‘Red Devils’ has been shattered. Seven fine athletes in the prime of their careers have been killed and ten others have been injured, some so seriously that it will be a long time before we shall know whether or not we shall see them on the field of play ever again.”

“The Club’s Secretary and Chairman of the Secretaries’ and Managers’ Association – that fine fellow Walter Crickmer – has lost his life as have Tom Curry, the Trainer, Bert Whalley, the Coach, and eight much respected sporting journalists. Friends of the team and a member of the aircraft’s crew are also dead.

“As the days have come and slowly gone since that fateful day, we in football and the millions of English football supporters have anxiously awaited the news about Manager Matt Busby and those of the party who were injured and as the time passes we take some small consolation, at this tragic time, in the news that those who survived are slowly gaining ground in their fight for recovery.

“The Manchester United team was not just a football team, it was an institution which stood for all that was fine in the skill of the game, for all that was good in youthful athletics and for all that was commendable in British Sportsmanship. An inspiration to every young Englishman. Under the leadership of Matt Busby, whose fight for life has been just as inspiring as many of his football triumphs, the United team has acquired during the past few years that sparkling mantle of the greatest team of modern times, star-studded with brilliant young players, most of whom had barely reached their prime. To Matt must go most of the credit for the Club’s achievements since the end of the war.

“Arriving at Old Trafford in 1945, where there was little but bomb-damage rubble and precious little material upon which to work, he adopted the policy which has been paramount in all his dealings; to depend on youth first, second and always, but he has never ignored the transfer market when the necessity has arisen to keep his team in the forefront of the battle.

“Since Matt Busby settled down at Old Trafford it has been just one success story after another. For three years in succession United were Runners-up in the League, then they were 4th; then Runners-up again and eventually Champions in 1952. In 1953 they were 8th, and 4th again a year later. In 1955 they were 5th and the last two seasons they have been Champions. In addition, during this post-War period, they have been in the Cup Final twice.

“Whenever the necessity has arisen there has usually been a man in the Reserve team ready and able to take his place in the senior XI, and this goes down the scale until we find that the Junior team has won the F.A. Youth Cup five years in succession.

“That a new ‘United’ will arise out of the shattered remnants of that once great team is the one certainty about football’s future for the Busby policy has proved itself one-hundred-per-cent and the man who has helped Matt achieve all these successes – Jimmy Murphy – who was not with the party owing to the calls of his native Wales, will undoubtedly continue the good work until Matt is fit and well enough to take over the direction again.

“Every club in this country will be ready and willing to co-operate to the full in helping United in their troubles but it is unlikely that the club will avail itself of such offers of players as may be made (with perhaps an isolated exception) for the true answer is in the development of a new set of ‘Babes’. To them will be given an opportunity earlier than anyone could have expected but, being members of a great club they will know how much depends upon them and we feel sure they can be relied upon to give everything they have got in the building of a new Championship team.

“And so, whilst we remember with affection those fine fellows Tommy Taylor, Roger Byrne, Eddie Colman, Billy Whelan, David Pegg, Mark Jones and Geoff Bent – who lost their lives – and all the injured players who are struggling back to fitness let us all join in the hope that the time will not be far distant when Matt Busby returns to the managerial chair; when the injured boys are back playing again, and that team – respected throughout the land for their mastery of our great game – will again become our most beloved and most feared opponents.”

The tragic postscript to this beautiful tribute came three days later, when the cautiously optimistic note sounded about the recovery of those injured was shattered with the news that Duncan Edwards had lost his battle for survival. He joined his seven team-mates among those mourned by the footballing world and beyond.

OLE AND CASEY JOIN FANS AT MUNICH MEMORIAL SERVICE

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and women's head coach Casey Stoney attended the Munich memorial service at Old Trafford on Thursday afternoon, alongside other club staff and supporters.

Solskjaer and Stoney joined former United captain Bryan Robson in laying a wreath, as the Reds marked the anniversary of the air disaster that claimed 23 lives in 1958.

“It’s a dark day in our history and we’ll always remember the ones who sadly passed away in the accident and what it did to the club,” Solskjaer told us.

“Of course these days are very important for us.”

Also present at the event was Jimmy Murphy Jnr, who recalled how his father helped to rebuild United in his role as Matt Busby's assistant.

Songs were sung and poems read out in front of the Munich plaque in the south-east corner of the Old Trafford forecourt, before the congregation observed a two-minute silence at 15:04 GMT, the exact time the plane crashed on 6 February 1958.

We will never forget.

On-pitch rivals Liverpool paid tribute to the Flowers of Manchester on their Twitter account

On-pitch rivals Liverpool also uploaded a tribute to their Twitter. They posted: 'The thoughts of #LFC (http://www.unitedindonesia.org/forum/usertag.php?do=list&action=hash&hash=LFC) are with all those affected by the Munich air disaster. 62 years ago today, but never forgotten.'

Along with the players, three club officials were killed in the disaster — secretary Walter Crickmer, trainer Tom Curry and coach Bert Whalley. There were also eight journalists who died, along with members of the public who were travelling with the team.

A service will be held on Thursday afternoon at 2.45pm, with supporters and staff to gather at the Munich memorial clock.

It will be led by reverend John Boyers and there will be poems, prayers and songs, including anthem The Flowers of Manchester.

The Munich air disaster involved British European Airways flight 609 crashing on its third attempt to take off from a slush-covered runway at Munich-Reim Airport. In total, there were 23 fatalities and 21 survivors from those who were on board.

United were on the way back from a European Cup match against Red Star Belgrade, which saw them reach the semi-final stages of the competition. They needed to refuel in Munich.

There were two failed attempts to take off and on the third the plane crashed into slush at the end of the runway before going through a fence. The left wing was torn off after a house was hit.

The plane was then evacuated over fears that the aircraft might explode while goalkeeper Harry Gregg helped pull survivors out of the wreckage. Nine members of the team survived, as did manager Matt Busby, four members of the crew, three journalists and three other passengers.

* Ole Gunnar Solskjaer laid a wreath at Old Trafford to mark the 63rd anniversary
* Solskjaer urged his players to deliver a 'fitting performance' against Everton

Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer paid a poignant tribute on the 63rd anniversary of the Munich Air Disaster by laying a wreath outside Old Trafford.

Solskjaer was filmed paying his respects to the 23 people who tragically lost their lives on February 6, 1958. The club solemnly mark each anniversary of the crash and usually hold a yearly service at the stadium.

Supporters were not able to attend this year, however, with Solskjaer undertaking the emotional gesture alone before holding a moment of silence.

United took on Everton on Saturday night - and it is a rare occasion when the anniversary of the disaster coincides with a fixture.

Solskjaer urged his squad to deliver a 'fitting performance' in tribute to the fallen.

'It's a big day for everyone and always an emotional one,' he said.

'It's only the fourth time the game is played on the actual anniversary and it's important we put on a fitting performance and hopefully we can honour them with the result.'

Everton captain Lucas Digne and United skipper Harry Maguire both carried wreaths of their own as they lead their sides out of the tunnel before kick-off.

Players and staff marked the anniversary before the game got underway, in which proved to be a dramatic affair which saw Everton grab a point with the last kick of the game in the 95th minute.

United Women manager Casey Stoney also laid a wreath of her own at the memorial outside of the stand.

Eight United players were among those killed when their plane crashed on take-off in Munich.

The disaster happened while Sir Matt Busby's team were travelling back from Belgrade after reaching the semi-finals of the European Cup.

Sir Bobby Charlton is now the only living member of the group of players who survived the crash.

A service for supporters typically takes place on each anniversary under the Munich clock outside Old Trafford.

This year, a pre-recorded service was shown instead, beginning at 2:55pm.

At 3:04, the precise time of the disaster, another minute's silence was undertaken.

Another minute's silence will be held before kick-off and both teams will also wear black armbands. The two captains will lay wreaths.

Harry Maguire, who will lead United out on Saturday evening, posted a touching tribute and wrote: 'We will remember them always.'

Manchester City and Liverpool were among a number of clubs to have also paid their respects this morning.

HOW THE MUNICH AIR DISASTER WILL BE REMEMBERED

Manchester United are pleased to confirm that the 64th anniversary of the Munich Air Disaster will be marked with a fan-led ceremony at Old Trafford on Sunday.

This will be the first time since 2020 that the traditional ceremony has been held on the 6 February anniversary, after pandemic-related restrictions made it impossible to hold the event last year.

As usual, the service will be led “by the fans, for the fans”, with supporters’ group Munich58 co-ordinating and former club chaplain Rev John Boyers acting as master of ceremonies.

The ceremony will begin at 14:40 GMT on Sunday beneath the Munich memorial plaque on the East Stand forecourt of Old Trafford, and will consist of poems and songs, including a rendition of The Flowers of Manchester. The names of all those who lost their lives in the tragedy will be read out, prior to a two-minute silence at 15:04 GMT, marking the time the plane crash occurred 64 years ago.

Fans who wish to pay their respects but cannot be at Old Trafford, can still do so by watching the service live on MUTV, ManUtd.com and our United App.

Tributes will also be paid at our FA Cup fourth-round tie against Middlesbrough at Old Trafford on Friday, with interim manager Ralf Rangnick placing a wreath on the pitch ahead of kick off and the team wearing black armbands during the game.

A giant banner will be unfurled by fans ahead of kick-off in the Stretford End proclaiming the powerful words, ‘We’ll never die’.

Flags at Old Trafford will fly at half-mast from Friday until after the U18’s match on Wednesday evening as a gesture of our everlasting respect.

Writing in his manager’s notes for United Review, Rangnick highlights the importance of these tributes: “This is our closest game to the anniversary of the Munich Air Disaster and, as is customary, the club will be marking the occasion ahead of kick-off.

“I have always admired how this club pays tribute every year to such a major incident in its history, and it is important that this tradition always continues because it is such a big part of the Manchester United story. I hope that we are also able to mark the occasion with an important victory this evening.”

Harry Maguire also understands how significant the Munich anniversary is and our club captain expects a unique atmosphere on Friday. “I think it is a really important day, the anniversary of the air disaster, a huge tragedy, but a tragedy where the club has built a lot of traditions and foundations to show togetherness with the fans,” says Harry. “And the club in general has shown a huge togetherness and that is what it has showed over the years, to rise again and show that spirit.

“Every game that you play for Manchester United, you always hope to play your best performance, but you know that when this anniversary comes around, the atmosphere will be really special, the occasion will be special, so we want to put on a performance and get a result that the club deserves. When you join this club, you learn about the traditions and lot does stem from that day.”

The tragic events at Munich will also be marked by our other teams this weekend. Manchester United Women will wear black arm bands in their away game against Arsenal on Sunday, and Academy players will place remembrance flowers and wear black armbands across their matches.

The anniversary will also be marked in Munich, with members of the Manchester Munich Memorial Foundation resuming their annual service at the crash site, now known as Manchesterplatz. Wreaths will be placed on behalf of the club, the Association of Former Manchester United Players and the fans. Two minutes’ silence will be observed and followed by the traditional singing of The Flowers of Manchester.

HOW WE WILL MARK THE 65TH ANNIVERSARY OF MUNICH

Manchester United will mark the 65th anniversary of the Munich Air Disaster at fixtures this weekend and memorial services next week.

Ahead of the annual fan-led memorial services in Munich and at Old Trafford, United players, staff and fans at this weekend’s fixtures will pay their respects to those who lost their lives as a result of the darkest day in the history of the club, on 6 February 1958.

Erik ten Hag and Marc Skinner will lead Manchester United’s tributes at league fixtures at Old Trafford and Leigh Sports Village by laying commemorative wreathes on behalf of the club ahead of kick off.

All United players in action this weekend will wear black armbands and a minute’s silence will be held to mark the occasion.

At Old Trafford on Saturday, the families of those we lost as well as those affected will be guests of the club, the flags will fly at half-mast as a gesture of respect, a rendition of The Flowers of Manchester will play as the team’s walkout and a giant surfer banner will be unfurled in the Stretford End proclaiming the powerful words, ‘We’ll never die’.

On Monday the memorial services delivered ‘for the fans by the fans’, led by fan group Munich58 and charity Manchester Munich Memorial Foundation (MMMF), will take place at Old Trafford and Manchesterplatz, Munich.

The service underneath the Munich Memorial Plaque at Old Trafford will begin at 14:40 GMT and will consist of poems and songs. The names of all those who lost their lives in the tragedy will be read out, prior to a one-minute silence at 15:04 GMT, marking the time of the tragic plane crash.

Manchester United will again play a leading role in the acts of remembrance with club representatives laying a wreath during the service. In addition, the full U18 and U21 squads will also be at Old Trafford and will lay a wreath on behalf of United’s Academy sides.

Former United captain and legend Bryan Robson and Head of Academy Nick Cox, who is a patron of the MMMF, will attend the service alongside senior leaders from the club. Robson will lay a wreath ahead of the one-minute silence on behalf of everyone at Manchester United.

In addition, members of United’s U13s will also take part in the service with Joe Williams reading a poem written by the squad and teammate Oliver Meredith will lay a wreath on behalf of the academy teams. The involvement of the U13s is part of the education work the club does with its youth sides on the history of Manchester United.

Senior representatives from FC Bayern Munich are also expected to be in attendance as well as the Lord Mayor of Munich, Dieter Reiter, who will deliver the opening address.

Ahead of the service a new memorial showcase will be unveiled at the crash site for fans to visit and pay their respects. The tribute has been funded by donations from fans as well as Red Docs Munich and FC Bayern Munich.
