22. JOHN O'SHEA

Birthdate: 30 Apr 1981
Birthplace: Waterford, Ireland
Position: Defender/Midfielder
Appearances: 341
Goals: 14
Joined United: 03 Aug 1998
United Debut: 13 Oct 1999 v Aston Villa (A)
International: Rep of Ireland

Arguably United’s most versatile player, John O'Shea - who has made over 300 appearances - has played everywhere during his time at Old Trafford. But wherever he plays, United’s no.22 is happy to contribute to the team.

What’s more, the Irishman signed a contract in November 2007 that will keep him at the club until 2012. He said of his new deal: “It has never crossed my mind to leave. Luckily the club wanted me to stay and it was sorted out quickly.”

A shining example of selflessness and professionalism, John has been ever-willing in his service for United, ever since his first full season in 2002/03 when he was was a revelation at left-back. He raced up and down the wing, effortlessly picking the pockets of opponents who ran at him and cheekily nutmegging those who tried to stop him (remember Luis Figo?).

O'Shea has always been a footballing defender, blessed with beautiful balance, crisp passing and formidable upper-body strength, which enables him to slip effortlessly into midfield and anywhere across the back four.

In 2004/05 he played in all those positions, and in the following season he began to establish himself in the holding role in midfield – forming an unlikely but extremely effective partnership with Ryan Giggs that was the basis of United’s late-season surge. The Irish international continued where he'd left off at the start of the 2006/07 campaign, but soon had his chances limited by the burgeoning midfield partnership between Paul Scholes and Michael Carrick.

He still went on to make 49 appearances (including a cameo between the posts at White Hart Lane) and chipped in with five goals, the most memorable of which came in dramatic circumstances at Anfield as he swept home an injury-time winner in front of the Kop, a key goal in regaining the Premier League title.

More recently, O'Shea featured prominently as United's defence sent records tumbling during the 2008/09 campaign. The Irishman, started 11 games and made two substitute appearances as the Reds created a Premier League record of 14 successive clean sheets. John's reward for becoming a cornerstone of the defence was a starting berth in the Champions League final against Barcelona.

Tugas Berat nan Istimewa untuk O'Shea
Narayana Mahendra Prastya - detiksport

Manchester - Seiring absennya para pemain bertahan Manchester United, maka tugas berat bakal dijalani John O'Shea.

so... let's chant for o'shea

It was a special day for John O'Shea who headed United's second on his 350th Reds' appearance

26/09/2009 17:30 - ManUtd.com, Gemma Thompson
Joy for John

http://picsrv.manutd.com/?fif=/manu/img_10_31095_1397.jpg&obj=iip,1.0&wid=240&hei=359&rgn=0.324,0.010893246187363835,0.48,0.782135076252 7233&cvt=jpeg

John O'Shea was hugely satisfied with a goal on his 350th United appearance and paid tribute to its creator, Ryan Giggs, whose cameo second half display turned the game in United's favour.

It was the Welshman's right wing free-kick which O'Shea rose to head past Thomas Sorensen in the Stoke goal, having earlier set up Dimitar Berbatov to open the scoring.

"Giggsy's experience of taking up different positions and taking advantage of any gaps proved crucial," O'Shea told MUTV. "The great run he made for the first goal was him all over. The way he used his experience to get on the blind side of the defender was brilliant.

"I was really pleased to score especially against a team who are so strong on set pieces.

"It was a great ball in from Giggsy - I said to him I'd try and get across the keeper - and thankfully I was able to knock it in."

The victory was United's seventh on the trot in all competitions since the shock defeat at Burnley and, alongside Chelsea's loss at the DW Stadium, took them top of table. And O'Shea keeping that fine run going is the only thing on the players' minds.

"We knew we had to put a good run together after the Burnley defeat which was a freak result," he explained.

"We've always responded well to results like that with a great run of victories, but the games keep on coming and we've got to keep that run going."

Interview: John O'Shea

http://i36.tinypic.com/2sb9y8k.jpg

Last term Sir Alex hailed John O’Shea as one of his men of the season. He's now notched 350 Reds appearances, but the Irishman still has plenty he wants to achieve…

On a personal front, was last season your best in a United shirt and perhaps even your career?
Possibly. It’s a close one between the last campaign and my first full season in the team [in 2002/03]. Winning the league for the first time that year was very special, but then winning the league, getting to the Champions League final and playing the majority of the big games last term was fantastic. It probably just edges it.

Having spent a large part of your career at left-back, do you now see right-back as your set position?
At the moment, yes, but it could easily change. If the manager keeps picking you then you know you’re doing the right things. But you can never rest on your laurels at this club because the competition for places is so fierce.

It’s nearly 10 years since your senior debut – what has been the highlight of the last decade and if you could relive a game, which would it be?
[Pauses] Hmmm, that’s a hard one. I feel very fortunate to have played in so many successful squads and picked up so many trophies, and I’d probably say winning my first title medal has been the best moment. In terms of reliving a game, I’d say last season’s Champions League final so we could put things right. Hopefully we’ll be able to make up for it this season.

Is there extra determination to do well in Europe after what happened in Rome?
Definitely. Winning the competition in Moscow in 2008 was an amazing feeling and getting back to the final was something we were determined to repeat. We did that, but fell at the final hurdle. The motivation is there to go one step further this time. With the squad we have we’re definitely capable of doing that. I’d love the opportunity to play in another final and, of course, finish on the winning side. It was an amazing experience to start last season’s final, but you have to do the business on the night and unfortunately we didn’t. Nonetheless, playing in a game of that importance is what you work towards throughout your career and hopefully it’ll happen again.

Are Barcelona the team to beat again this season?
You’d have to say so. The age of their team and their vast experience make them very strong, but we don’t feel like we have anything to fear. We know the result in Rome could easily have gone the other way and it could have been our night. Real Madrid have obviously spent a lot of money and spent well! Internazionale look a better team and I’m sure Chelsea will be there or thereabouts, while Liverpool have great experience in the competition as well. So there are a few teams in with a good chance.

The other question… What’s your favourite Irish sport? A fan of Gaelic football and hurling, we hear…
Yes, I follow both. I used to love playing Gaelic football, but to watch I’d say hurling has the edge. My dad is from Kilkenny and they have the ultimate hurling team – they’ve won the All-Ireland title more times than any other side, including the last four. Myself, my mam and my brother are all from Waterford and we’ve been a bit starved of success! Hurling is a very intense sport and the determination, skill level and bravery the players show are a joy to watch. A good hurling game is as good as any game in the world.

A decade on from his senior debut - 13 October 1999 v Aston Villa - John O’Shea reflects on ten stand-out moments

4.8.99 Pre-season – Wigan Athletic 0 United 2 | A chance to shine
I’d come on as a substitute for David May the day before during a friendly with Omagh Town and I did the same again at Wigan. My competitive debut at Villa in the League Cup was a very proud occasion, but also a real eye-opener. We lost 3-0 and the manager was not very happy – the hairdryer was in overdrive that night!

23.4.03 UCL QF 2, United 4 Real Madrid 3 (Agg 5-6) | The Figo nutmeg
This was just an amazing game to be part of. Madrid had some unbelievable players in their side – Zidane, Figo, Ronaldo, Roberto Carlos – they were the first Galacticos and the holders of the trophy at the time. People always ask me about my nutmeg against Figo – it was just instinctive. The chance arose and I took it!

11.5.03 Barclays Premiership, Everton 1 United 2 | Title glory
The champagne was certainly flowing on this picture – it was a first winners’ medal for all three of us! This was an unbelievable day - probably the stand-out moment of my career so far. What made it even more special was the way we’d come back to win the title after being written off earlier in the season.

22.5.04 FA Cup Final, Millennium Stadium, United 3 Millwall 0 | Up for the Cup
Fletch looks about 10-years-old on this photo! This day means a lot because it’s the only FA Cup final I’ve won. We’d beaten Arsenal in another classic semi-final at Villa Park, but Millwall had been on an unbelievable run to get to the final and we knew we had to perform well. Thankfully we did and Ronaldo - wow, he looks really young on this photo too! - in particular put in a very special performance.

1.2.05 Barclays Premier League, Arsenal 2 United 4 | In chipper mood
The shock on my face stayed there for a while after the final whistle after this goal! I remember the ball being played down the line to Louis [Saha] who flicked it into Scholesy and he spotted my run inside. I had a feeling the keeper was off his line so I went for the chip and thankfully it dropped in.

4.2.2007 Barclays Premier League, Tottenham Hotspur 0 United 4 | In safe hands
I look terrified don’t I! The game was over by the time I was called upon to go in goal after Edwin had gone off injured, so I felt fairly confident. I remember coming out and flapping at a couple of crosses, but I was really pleased with my tackle on Robbie Keane when we were one-on-one - if any of our keepers want advice they don’t just have [goalkeeping coach] Eric Steele to call on, they have me as well!

3.3.2007 Barclays Premier League, Liverpool 0 United 1 | Kop that
Technically this isn’t the best goal I’ve scored, but in terms of importance it’s up there with the one against Arsenal in last season’s Champions League semi-final and is definitely one of the best moments in my career. It was a huge win for us and was a sickener for our rivals given how late we scored. Two months later we were champions.

29.4.09 UCL SF 1, United 1 Arsenal 0 | Gunned down
To score the winner in a Champions League semi-final was an amazing feeling. It was just an instinctive finish. A corner came in and was only half cleared. Michael [Carrick] fired it back into the danger area and when it dropped to me I just smashed it home.

27.5.09 UCL Final, Stadio Olimpico, Barcelona 2 United 0 | Reds in ruins
Personally, this was a bittersweet night. It was an amazing experience to start a Champions League final – playing in a game of that importance is what you work towards throughout your career, but ultimately it ended in disappointment. Barca will definitely be one of the favourites for the trophy this season, but with the squad we have we’re definitely capable of challenging again.

16.8.09 Barclays Premier League, United 1 Birmingham City 0 | Leading the way
Captaining United in the opening game of the season as champions was a huge honour and something I’ll always cherish. The Birmingham win set us on our way to what could turn out to be a very special season. We’ve won three titles on the trot and we’ve got a great chance of getting a fourth.

Manchester United's John O'Shea hungry for more success as defender celebrates decade at Old Trafford

http://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2009/10/14/article-1220384-06A5F24A000005DC-71_468x340.jpg

O'Shea made his United debut in October 1999 in a League Cup defeat at Aston Villa.

There have been periods since when he looked destined to leave Old Trafford, but approaching Saturday's Barclays Premier League encounter with Bolton, the Waterford-born defender has amassed 352 appearances for the Red Devils to more than justify his decision to stay.
Manchester United's John O'Shea in action against Wolfsburg

'I don't want to look back on my Manchester United career,' he said. 'Fingers crossed there is lots more to come. I knew if I was going to leave United I would have a great grounding. The education was terrific, not only in terms of football, but maturing as a person.

'But when you look back, I guess everything has worked out okay so far. Long may it continue.'

'It worries me,' joked O'Shea. 'I used to think I was quite young. Obviously you know the years are ticking by because of the age of the lads coming into the squad and the amount of games you have played.

'I have been fortunate enough to be captain as well. You know you are maturing and getting that bit older.'

O'Shea has a growing collection of trophies as tangible reward for his loyal service, as well as a few notable achievements, including playing in more Manchester derbies than Gary Neville.

'That is obviously a good thing,' O'Shea added. 'It means you are playing in the important games. I don't know what my record against City is, although I have missed a few open goals.

'Overall, it is a good achievement for someone to stay 10 years at a club like Manchester United and to be involved in a lot of games and win some great trophies. Now I just want to continue and be a part of the team.'

O'Shea Lupakan Masa Lalu
Hendra Mujiraharja - Okezone

http://bola.okezone.com/images-data/content/2009/10/15/45/265878/OGqZMxihru.jpeg

Defeat will galvanise us

The Reds may have felt a real sense of injustice as they left Stamford Bridge on Sunday night, but John O'Shea believes the defeat will now inspire a long unbeaten run.

O'Shea admitted to feeling 'terrible' after seeing United lose out to a controversial John Terry goal 14 minutes from time despite dominating for long periods of the game.

The Irishman says the Reds can take heart from their solid display against the Blues and insists it's imperative United hit those heights again over the coming weeks.

"We hate losing games and we know that we now have to go on a great run," O'Shea told MUTV.

"The international break comes at a bit of a bad time - you'd prefer to have another game a few days later to help put the defeat out of your mind. There's a bit of a sour taste left, but hopefully we'll get over that.

"Not many teams come to the Stamford Bridge and dominate games. We had great spells in the game where we had Chelsea really pinned back and we caused them problems on the counter-attack as well, but our final ball or shot just didn't go for us and we were lucky at times as well.

"We stuck to our game plan very well and were the better team.

Unfortunately we didn't get what we deserved."

O'Shea was particularly disappointed by the performance of the match officials who failed to spot Didier Drogba's foul on Wes Brown as Terry headed home Lampard's free-kick, which O'Shea feels should never have been awarded.

"We didn't think it was a foul in the first place [Fletcher on Ashley Cole] - Fletch went in and came out with the ball," he declared.

"The ref's angle of it and the Chelsea players' reaction won them the free-kick. And then Wes was clearly fouled by Drogba as the ball came in. The referee's position was terrible - he was stood right behind one of the Chelsea players and was too far away to see it.

"Lots of decisions seemed to go against us - I crossed the ball towards the end and Lampard clearly stuck his arm up [to block it].

"It was just outside the box, but the linesman was ten yards away and surely had to see it. The little things just didn't go for us and we're very disappointed in that sense."

Reds eye unbeaten run

"We hate losing games and we know that we now have to go on a great run. The international break comes at a bit of a bad time - you'd prefer to have another game a few days later to help put the defeat out of your mind. There's a bit of a sour taste left, but hopefully we'll get over that."

An ode to John O’Shea

http://www.unitedrant.co.uk/wp-content/themes/flashnews/thumb.php?src=http://www.unitedrant.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2009/11/john-o-shea.jpg&h=189&w=279&zc=1&q=95

Whilst fans hotly debate the comings and goings of January’s upcoming transfer market, lest we not forget the true heroes of football. John O’Shea comes as no better example. For many the loveable idiot within United’s international set-up, O’Shea is now approaching his tenth season with United. Rant marks O’Shea’s anniversary in all his glory.

A fan’s favourite, O’Shea is also a regular fixture at international level with the Republic of Ireland.O’Shea is probably the most versatile player ever to grace the modern game, having played in goal in United’s famous 2007 win at White Hart Lane. The Irishman also played up-front, scoring the the winner, at Anfield in the same year. A feat that should not be underestimated as the game was pivotal to United finally clinching the title that season.

The 28-year-old has dabbled in central midfield and, though a centre half by trade, seems more accomplished in the right wing-back role. If that was O’Shea’s rite-of-passage he should be relieved to have finished the ordeal. But there seems little in O’Shea’s character to suggest that he minds too much. As long as he is involved, he is happy. The true glory of O’Shea.

Ferguson has rewarded the attitude, with the manager now placing the Irishman as United’s first choice right-back, ahead of the England’s incumbent and teammate Wes Brown.

Brown, magnificent prior to another recent injury lay-off, has lost his place in the starting eleven to O’Shea. Youngster Rafael, with such raw talent, has been unable to displace Ireland’s key defender, and even the club-Captain Gary Neville must now play second fiddle.

The Waterford-born star is also one of the few United players to rarely be troubled with injury throughout his time at the club. It’s a feature of O’Shea’s make-up that has become extremely useful for Sir Alex Ferguson.

O’Shea recently past 350 appearances for United, and is not far from surpassing the Scot Arthur Albiston, who made 485 appearances. That would, almost unbelievably, place O’Shea 10th on the all-time United appearances list.

Trivial facts that should not be underestimated. Many players have an instant impact at Old Trafford but are just as easily forgotten. Dwight Yorke, for example, was at times a superb player for United but lacked the inherent quality to maintain his level for many years. Performances on the pitch are key for Ferguson, with Yorke’s ‘character’ a point of friction for the Scot.

O’Shea, a model of complete professionalism, deserves significant credit. To have survived at Old Trafford for so long, Sir Alex must must not doubt for a moment his capabilities.

Yet it is obvious that O’Shea is not the most gifted player to have pulled on a United shirt. But that is not to doubt the Irishman’s impact – amid too many Prima Donas, there simply aren’t enough John O’Shea’s.

A successful team is not made up of a few key players, it is not made up of a starting eleven and it is not even made up a starting eleven and substitutes. A successful team involves a full squad. For years now Manchester United have been one of the best, if not the best club in the world. During his time at Old Trafford, there is one thing that Alex Ferguson’s Manchester United sides have always had and that is strength in depth.

The current United side is no different. The Red Devil’s have several quality squad players whom they rely on in times of need, take Park Ji Sung or Johnny Evans for instance. However in my opinion, one of the most important players in the whole of Manchester United’s side is John O’Shea.

Anyone who has read any of my previous articles with know that a skill that I keenly admire in a player is versatility, something that John O’Shea has in abundance. The Irishman is widely regarded as one of the most versatile players in the Premier League and his importance to Alex Ferguson’s side cannot be underestimated. Sure he does not possess the same flair as players such as Wayne Rooney and Dimitar Berbatov, but nevertheless he remains a key member of the team.

O’Shea is a man for every occasion and it is a huge compliment to him that in times of need, no matter where the position, Ferguson will often turn to O’Shea. An example was seen in February 2007 after an injury to goalkeeper Edwin Van Der Sar. With United unable to use any more substitutes, John O’Shea was instructed to deputise in goal and although this may not been seen as significant, it still shows the faith United have in O’Shea to do any job.

Despite not really having a set position, in recent seasons O’Shea has begun to be known as a right back for Manchester United. He has been immensely important in the last few campaigns with injuries to Gary Neville and Wes Brown leaving a gap on the right side of defence. Although there has been the recent emergence of young prospect Rafael Da Silva in the wing back role, I am of the firm belief that in big games O’Shea will still be favoured due to his experience; last year’s Champions League final was evidence of this.

Although he is by no means known for his goal scoring prowess, O’Shea has still scored his fair share of key goals for Man United. An injury time winner against Liverpool helped United regain the 2006-07 title and another in a 1-0 win in the Champions League first leg against Arsenal prove that he can pop up to score a crucial goal for his side.

One of the glamorous names of the Manchester United team John O’Shea is definitely not, yet I believe him to still be one of the more important members of the squad. His ability is backed up by his importance to his national side, the Republic of Ireland. He may be a little overshadowed at times at Old Trafford but the importance of his role at United should not be overlooked.

Fergie confirms O'Shea blow
Irishman set to miss rest of the season

John O'Shea is set to miss the rest of the season, Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has confirmed.

O'Shea has not played since Republic of Ireland's World Cup play-off defeat to France in mid-November.

When O'Shea first returned to Manchester, it was believed he had not suffered anything worse than a dead leg.

But complications have arisen and it now transpires he has a blood clot and will now miss the rest of the campaign.
Terrible

"He's got a terrible injury at the moment," Ferguson said in the Irish Independent.

"It's one of those sorts of injuries that are unusual. It's like a dead leg except a dead leg is usually only three or four days.

"The problem is that the blood clot became all knotted and when it gets knotted you get calcification so therefore it's a long process to clear that up and he'll probably miss the season now.

"It's a bad blow for the boy and for the team because he can play anywhere.

"When you look at all the problems I've had with the back four this season, he could have played every single one."

get well soon John.. United need you...

O'Shea Tuntaskan Musim Lebih Cepat
Mohammad Resha Pratama - detiksport

O'Shea eyeing return
Utility player aiming to be back in March

John O'Shea is targeting a return to action within weeks to bolster Manchester United's campaigns in the Premier League and UEFA Champions League.

The utility player believes he could be back in action in March, which would be a massive bonus for the league leaders given Sir Alex Ferguson once thought the 28-year-old may miss the rest of the season.

The United boss made the prediction after the Republic of Ireland international suffered complications in his recovery following an injury in November's heartbreaking World Cup play-off exit to France in Paris.

Ferguson has since reigned back that statement, instead expressing hope that O'Shea - who was originally diagnosed with a dead leg - might play some part before next term.

But O'Shea insists his recovery mission is nowhere near so bleak and he is confident it will not be long before he is once again battling to help United land some silverware.

He told the Irish Examiner: "The boss said that I could be out for the rest of this season, but 'could' and 'would' are two very different words.

"To be honest, I am much more hopeful about my injury situation.

"I am improving at a very steady pace and I am very hopeful of being back in the action sometime in March."

O'Shea Berharap Sembuh Lebih Cepat
Okdwitya Karina Sari - detiksport

Manchester United's John O'Shea refuses to set comeback date after three months out

http://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2010/02/19/article-0-0322A240000005DC-974_306x423.jpg

Manchester United defender John O'Shea is refusing to set a comeback date even though he is edging closer to full fitness.

The Irishman has been out since November after suffering complications in his recovery from a dead leg he picked up during the latter stages of his country's controversial World Cup play-off defeat to France in November.

A blood clot caused such a significant setback Sir Alex Ferguson recently revealed O'Shea would be out of action for the remainder of the campaign. Ferguson subsequently pulled back from that stance.

However, while O'Shea is happy with the way things have gone, he is refusing to rush.

'It is progressing very well. I have been doing some running on the water treadmill and the normal treadmill and I have not had any setbacks yet,' he told Key103.

'The strength is improving. It is nearly 85% in my right leg. Once it is over 90 and nudging up towards 95 it is all systems go.

'But I am not going to set myself a target because it just adds to the speculation.'

Throughout his absence, O'Shea has been a frequent visitor to Old Trafford, watching Sir Alex Ferguson's men mount their bid for honours on three fronts.

It has been a frustrating time for the defender and he can't wait for the day it comes to an end.

'I am itching to get back,' he admitted. 'Once you see the Champions League starting back up you know that is the business end of the season starting up.

'You have to be careful when you are injured not to force yourself to come back too soon and get injured again.

'It is hugely frustrating.'

Wag of honour: Coleen Rooney attends wedding of Manchester United defender John O'Shea

She may have been banned from the World Cup - but Coleen Rooney is determined to have fun while husband Wayne is in South Africa.

The ''wag of honour' was pictured smiling broadly as she attended the wedding of Wayne's team-mate John O'Shea in Ireland yesterday.

The 29-year-old Manchester United and Ireland defender married Yvonne Manning, 27, in the small surrounds of the Lady Chapel in Maynooth, County Kildare.

Wag at the wedding: Coleen Rooney with her husband Wayne's cousin Claire, left, and similing broadly, right, at the wedding of John O'Shea and Yvonne Manning

A low-key couple, the duo steered clear of signing on the dotted line for a glossy magazine deal for their wedding - and instead opted to enjoy a small, tasteful ceremony with their friends and family.

But given the nature of the occasion, familiar faces were ten-a-penny.

Coleen, who attended with Wayne's cousin, Claire, lent a dash of glamour to the occasion when she arrived in a flowing purple maxi-dress, matched with a pair of eye-catching statement earrings.

And Coleen’s presence at the nuptials was a fitting one, as whispers of the duo’s wedding began when Yvonne beat off stiff competition from her fellow guests on the day, to catch the bouquet at the Rooney’s glitzy wedding in Italy in 2008.

Along with Coleen, the world of football was well-represented with Wolverhampton Wanderers and Ireland player, Kevin Doyle and Manchester United’s Wes Brown – wearing an ill-judged striped suit - and Darron Gibson also in attendance.

While the defender’s Republic of Ireland team-mates Stephen Hunt, Andy Keogh and Daryl Murphy were also on hand to cheer on the happy couple,

Wedded bliss: John O'Shea, 29, with new wife Yvonne Manning, 27. Yvonne caught the bouquet at Coleen's wedding to Wayne two years ago

The long-term partner of the defender, Yvonne arrived at the church promptly yesterday afternoon, before the 2pm start time.

And the petite brunette looked every inch the blushing bride, in a demure, sleeveless white wedding-gown.

A stalwart source of support for the footballer over the years, one on-looker said that the bride looked ‘nervous but happy’ as she arrived at the church.

And the duo were happy to share their glad tidings with on-lookers after the ceremony, as they took time to pose for the waiting photographers before heading back to their lavish wedding reception at the exclusive Carton House Hotel.

Regarded as one of the most talented footballers to emerge from Ireland in the last decade, the defender has shied from the spotlight over the years.

But in 2008, he spoke of his years of enduring taunts from fans of rival football teams about his sexuality.

Speaking in an interview at the time, he said, ‘I’ve been gay for about five years, according to them. The Man City fans think I’m gay.’

‘It’s ridiculous,’ he added, ‘it’s just a bit of banter really.’

‘I just brush it off. It doesn't annoy me. I'm always ready for the sing-song when we play City.’

Glamorous guests: Coleen with Manchester United player Wes Brown, right, and his wife Leanne. Wayne Rooney is in South Africa preparing for the World Cup

Originally from Waterford, the duo now live in Cheshire – with Yvonne making the move to be close to the footballer a number of years ago.

Seldom spotted on the high-profile social scene, which surrounds the premiere league footballers, Yvonne made a rare public appearance in join in the rowdy celebrations after Manchester United scored their European Cup victory over Chelsea in Moscow a number of years ago.

Engaged since 2008, the footballer said at the time, ‘My girlfriend has always been there for me. It is a fantastic feeling.’

The duo are expected to enjoy a honeymoon in the sun, before the footballer has to report back to Old Trafford for pre-season training.

FLASHBACK: John O’Shea
-therepublikofmancunia.com-

http://therepublikofmancunia.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/OShea-2001.jpg

May 11th 2001 : “We`ve had a dry spell for a couple of years,” said Ferguson. “At some stage you have to let the system unchoke and allow it to breathe again. Now we are looking not bad again, we are very pleased at the standard that is coming through, we are back on track a little bit. You can’t always have it perfect, but there are signs now that we are getting there again, the likes of the Stewarts, O’Sheas, Roches and Fletchers look like they could get into the first team eventually. It is always a part of our club to produce our own players. That creates the spirit at our club and I am pleased things are looking good again.”

http://therepublikofmancunia.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/OShea-2002.jpg

March 10th 2002 : “My performances have been up and down,” O’Shea admitted of his time so far in Antwerp. “Some matches I was content, some weren’t that bad. I am looking forward to playing in the next few matches and developing further. It is a fantastic experience to play here but I am the first to say that my performances in some matches were not good enough. I shouldn’t have any problems. It`s just that everything is new and you have to accustom to things. I have moved to a foreign country and play in a team whose players I don’t know. I came into contact with an new style of living and had to acclimatise to the new surroundings. You cannot underestimate that. My girlfriend came over but it is a pity she will stay living in England because she is studying. But I have got a lot of work to do with training and playing matches. I haven’t got any problems with being homesick.”

July 16th 2002 : “We’ve got some terrific prospects at Old Trafford,” said Ferguson. “Michael Stewart and Luke Chadwick are doing very well, and John O’Shea’s doing well too. And there’s a young boy who has started now, he’s 16, called Kieran Richardson. He’s going to be a fantastic player.”

September 29th 2002 : “John has done fantastically well,” said Ferguson. “I look at him and Rio, think of next season and think to myself – there’s your partnership. I remember saying it right from the first time I saw him, he could read the game superbly. But now he has size, now he has the shoulders. He looks like a centre half now. Last year he was a big beanpole.”

http://therepublikofmancunia.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/OShea-2003.jpg

February 27th 2003 : “I definitely learned from Paul,” said O’Shea of compatriot McGrath. “He was so relaxed but he completely controlled games. In many ways, it was like Roy Keane did for Ireland. Paul never trained, he just played the games. That’s how good he was. I try to be composed and be a big figure on the pitch and impose myself. That’s what Paul used to do and I try to copy that.”

March 12th 2003 : “It has gone well for me,” said O’Shea of playing at full-back. “But I have not really played there since I was 10 or 12 years old. I never believed I would be a full back in the United team, but I am happy to continue if it gets me into the side.”

March 20th 2003 : “I have made a breakthrough by playing so many games this season and maybe that will encourage the other young lads,” said O’Shea. “Even though we lost, they gained invaluable experience by playing against Deportivo. You could tell it was new to our boys from the way they were breathing so hard. The pace of the game was something they weren’t used to. It was a world away from playing for the reserves down at Altrincham. It was a big step up for them and the lads with a bit more experience like myself tried our best to help them. I enjoyed the extra responsibility and it’s easy to see the advantages of putting out the team we did. The bonus from playing that game with nothing to lose was that it let the new players trying to break through know what they have to achieve.”

April 4th 2003 : “When I was 15, I had all but dotted the i’s and crossed the t’s on the dotted line to go to Celtic,” said O’Shea. “But then United came in for me and I changed my mind. Everyone kept asking ‘How are you going to get into that team?’ But I decided the education I could get football-wise at United would do me the world of good and I couldn’t turn down the chance.”

May 4th 2003 : “Over the summer I was listening to all the talk of a new central defender coming,” said O’Shea. “I knew it was going to happen and I knew it was going to be someone big. First it was Nesta, then Ayala and, eventually, Rio came. He showed in the World Cup what a great player he is. People were saying to me ‘What are you going to do? Are you going to move?’ But I kept saying ‘No’ and took the attitude that he’s a player who I can learn from. With Laurent Blanc and Rio, I knew it was going to be good for me. It has been a dream season for me. Yet I want to make sure we get something out of it. It has been great for me to look back on but it is even better if you have a medal to prove it. The Premiership is our only target now and we are determined that we won’t throw that away. We know we have a great chance of winning the league. If someone had said to me at the start of the season that I’d have played a part in nearly every game I’d have found it a little bit hard to believe. Now I want a Premiership winner’s medal.”

June 13th 2003 : “I’m in talks with United at the moment about a new contract,” said O’Shea. “I’ve played almost 60 games this season and I’ve never done that before, but I’m looking forward to doing it next season. Everyone seems to be quite happy with me. It was Alex Ferguson’s decision to play me in all those games so he must have been happy with me. I’ve played some internationals in the middle of that and I think Brian Kerr was happy so it was a case of being a very satisfying season for me. Normally the manager might give me a game or two followed by a rest but he felt he needed to keep putting me back in. I think I played 12 games last season and I was hoping that if I got around the mid-20s in games the next term I would have been happy because that would have been a good progression, so to quadruple that figure from the season before and to have a championship medal at the end of it all has just been fantastic.”

http://therepublikofmancunia.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/OShea-2004.jpg

March 2nd 2004 : “My first season went well and my second hasn’t been as good, so it’s natural people will comment on it,” O’Shea conceded. “All I can do is keep my head down, work hard, believe in my own ability and make sure it’s tough for the manager to leave me out. I can’t do anything about the attention. The spotlight has only been on me for a couple of years so I can only imagine what some of the others have had to put up with.”

July 22nd 2004 : “I’ve had a few chats with the boy, he knows himself,” Ferguson said. “He’s still only 23, very young for a defender. He has to maybe look at another position. He’s a naturally right-footed player and could play centre midfield, centre back or right back maybe. He’s very versatile, but he’s suffered because of that. But he’s a good type, and you always think with guys of decent character is that they find their way back. He’s got years ahead of him.”

November 29th 2004 : “There is no way I am leaving Old Trafford,” O’Shea said. “I am definitely staying, without a doubt, and, fingers crossed, I will be here for a long time to come. When you are playing for Manchester United, you are going to face pressure. I have faced it before, no doubt I will face it again in the future. What you have to do is make sure when you get a chance, you put the manager under pressure not to leave you out.”

December 12th 2004 : “When you see the improvement he has made in training, and strength-wise, it is remarkable,” said Ferguson. “For two-and-a-half years we played him all the time in different positions, sometimes with injuries, simply because we had to. Now having given him that break he looks a different player completely. He is fresh and strong and he has been terrific in training.”

http://therepublikofmancunia.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/OShea-2005.jpg

February 1st 2005 : O’Shea scores that goal at Highbury.

August 7th 2005 : “I’m aware of the speculation but I’m very happy here,” said O’Shea. “I’m getting plenty of football and know I can get a lot more. That’s my aim. Old Trafford is the best place to learn your football but that isn’t the reason I am staying. I want to get into the first XI – that’s the most important thing – and I believe I have a future here.”

August 10th 2005 : “I am very close to signing a new four-year deal and, fingers crossed, that will be done and dusted before the start of the season,” said O’Shea. “That will take me to around 27 or 28-years-old which people say is around the time you reach your prime. Overall, I am looking forward to spending a lot more time at United and enjoying lots more success.”

Novermber 1st 2005 : “He’s just strolling around when he should have been busting a gut to get back,” said Roy Keane.

http://therepublikofmancunia.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/OShea-2006.jpg

March 16th 2006 : “I just think he needs to be tougher for the big, crunch games,” said Roy Keane. “I saw the highlights of the United and Newcastle game, and I thought he played quite well. If he gets tougher, he can do more than a job there. But you have to bear in mind, he’s still young and he’s still improving. He just needs to get tougher, both physically and mentally.”

July 14th 2006: “I want to play as many games as possible for the club in whatever position that they want,” said O’Shea. “I’ve really enjoyed playing midfield and if the opportunity comes up again I’m more than happy to do it.”

March 5th 2007 : “The 90th minute at Anfield, in front of the Kop – Gary Neville’s just told me that is his dream and I’ve just gone and done it!” said O’Shea. “Without a doubt, it’s the most important goal I’ve ever scored. To score a goal in such circumstances in front of the Kop is so special.”

http://therepublikofmancunia.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/OShea-2007.jpg

November 18th 2007 : “I have this season and the next on my current contract, but I am very close to signing a new deal that will keep me at United into my 30s,” said O’Shea. “It is something I want to do. I want to stay here, everything is good and this is where I want to be. I have never looked to go elsewhere.”

November 27th 2007 : “I feel like I am going to be part of something special,” said O’Shea. “Signing the new contract was not a particularly hard decision but it was an important one. I know it is going to be difficult to get into the team and stay there but I also know I will get my chance. I feel that if you look at the club, the team, my age and the age of the squad, there are good times ahead. And I want to be part of it.”

May 27th 2008 : “That is crossing my mind a lot of the time, but then I think ‘where do you go when you leave a team like that?’” said O’Shea. “That’s an even bigger question. For the time being, I will stay where I am. You just have to get on with it. The club has so many players and in the build-up to the final, he [Ferguson] had every player fit.”

August 15th 2008 : “You could say a game here is worth two elsewhere but it is more than that,” said O’Shea. “I want to challenge myself, both in matches and in training every day and I want to improve my game. That is why I am here. As long as the manager keeps me as part of the team that will do for me. At this club all you have to do is look across at Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes and see the way they train. It is such an example they set. Despite the success they have had and the rewards they have received, they still want more and more. It is what the manager prides himself on too. You have to learn from these players and want to be like them. That is what this place is all about.”

March 17th 2009 : “The attitude of the players has been marvellous, especially when it comes to the business of being left out,” said Ferguson. “There have been no dummies flying out of the pram. I hate telling a player that, although he has perhaps just delivered a top-class performance, I will not be using him in the next match. It’s not nice, but it helps that the players understand. I feel blessed that we have players like John O’Shea, who has stepped in to play out of his skin. John has thrived on playing regularly and I’m sure that if I asked him to play at centre-forward he would get us a goal. It’s great to have such adaptable players and it’s one of our strengths as we enter the last lap of the title race.”

May 21st 2009 : “I would never stay at a club just for the sake of winning a medal,” said O’Shea. “If I felt I wasn’t playing a part I would leave. That has always been the case. I know Roy Keane’s said that 20 games for United is better than 40 anywhere else but I don’t buy into that idea. As a footballer, you want to play as often as you can, no matter what club you are at. You could say I have been rewarded for my patience. But whether you are playing a bit part or a bigger part I was always confident, if I got a run in the team, I could show I could stay in it. I have always had a good relationship with the manager. It is difficult to keep everyone happy but being successful is a key. If you are winning things it makes it slightly easier when you are left out at certain stages. Look at the size of squads at big clubs in Europe now. You can’t win things with 11 players. The teams who will be successful will have between 18 and 22. It’s the man-management side that does it. He makes you feel involved. He might come around and say ‘You are not playing tomorrow but you are playing on Wednesday week and I want you ready for that game’. It is those little things that make him the best in the business.”

October 14th 2009 : “I don’t want to look back on my Manchester United career,” said O’Shea. “Fingers crossed there is lots more to come. I knew if I was going to leave United I would have a great grounding. The education was terrific, not only in terms of football, but maturing as a person. But when you look back, I guess everything has worked out okay so far. Long may it continue. I know I am maturing and getting that bit older. I used to think I was quite young. Obviously you know the years are ticking by because of the age of the lads coming into the squad and the amount of games you have played. Overall, it is a good achievement for someone to stay 10 years at a club like Manchester United and to be involved in a lot of games and win some great trophies. Now I just want to continue and be a part of the team.”

April 20th 2010 : “Normally, when most teams lose a game it’s not really spoken about but when we lose a game it’s a guaranteed crisis,” said O’Shea. “I remember the first time I won the league back in 2003 the headlines for about a month were ‘The Empire’s Crumbling’. It’s just always been the way – they can’t wait to shoot down the best, and we’ll keep proving them wrong.”

April 23rd 2010 : “That’s where the club has been so successful and maintained a structure all the way through, giving the youngsters a chance,” said O’Shea. “Like I’m 28, just about to be 29, and you look at Giggsy and Scholesy – it’s a credit to the club that they keep the consistency going and it’s worked because the team keeps being successful.”

O'Shea hopes to evade injuries

Stopper says shortage hindered title tilt.

Manchester United defender John O'Shea is hoping his team avoid a defensive injury crisis this season.

United suffered from a shortage of stoppers throughout the last campaign which saw them lose their grip on the Premier League title.

Chelsea ran out the eventual winners of the championship and Sir Alex Ferguson's team were left to reflect on a winter of discontent in December.

Ferguson saw his team lose twice in the league as O'Shea and fellow defenders Rio Ferdinand, Gary Neville, Jonny Evans, Rafael, Wes Brown and Fabio spent time on the sidelines.

Nemanja Vidic and goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar were also conspicuous absentees and O'Shea - felled by a thigh problem - believes the injuries affected their hopes of the retaining the title.

The Irish international said: "Injuries were a key factor last season and we hope to avoid them this time around. I can never remember so many defenders being injured.

"But we still got so close to retaining the title - only a few lapses of concentration let us down in the end. Now we are all hungry to succeed again."

United are currently preparing for the new Premier League campaign by holding their pre-season preparations in the United States.

It means the Red Devils have been training in sweltering temperatures in the region of 30 degrees Celcius but O'Shea recognises preparations are vital in starting the season strongly.

"It is hard but not as hard as it was in years gone by, mind you," added the 29-year-old.

"It is more personalised now, which is down to the sports science staff. A good pre-season is so important."

Such a perfect day for O'Shea

STAND-IN captain John O'Shea reckons that last night's friendly game against a League of Ireland XI at Lansdowne Road was the ideal way for Manchester United to warm up for the new season.

The Old Trafford club picked up the trophy after a 7-1 win over their Irish opponenets and O'Shea says he was honoured to captain the United side for the first soccer game at the revamped Lansdowne.

But the big bonus, he says, was the sight of Wayne Rooney, Nemanja Vidic and Ji-Park Sung making their first appearances since the World Cup finals, ahead of Sunday's Community Shield meeting with Chelsea, though there was a concern for United as Michael Carrick limped out of the game early in the first half and was later seen boarding the United team bus with a protective boot on his left foot.

Rooney, eager to impress United boss Alex Ferguson after some less than flattering pictures of a night out emerged this week, failed to score before his substitution at half time but O'Shea was delighted to see the England man back in action.

"It was good for the World Cup lads to get some minutes on the pitch. We now have the Community Shield game to come and that's a game we want to win," said O'Shea.

"It's going to be an important season for us. We want to get the Premier League title back and challenge for all the honours. It was a fantastic night and I was glad we could give some entertainment to the crowd. We got some fantastic goals and some great fitness work in as well."

"Tahun lalu kami kehilangan Shield lewat adu penalti.

(Man Utd)
