Wayne Rooney should be fit to lead Manchester United's title challenge at Bolton Wanderers this weekend, despite concerns the striker suffered an injury in the defeat of Liverpool.

The England international limped away from Old Trafford on Sunday having scored his 33rd goal of a remarkable campaign in the 2-1 victory over Rafael Benítez's team. United have not confirmed the nature of Rooney's problem but the 24-year-old, who missed the 1-0 win at Wolverhampton Wanderers this month with a knee injury, was not among those players who reported for treatment at the club's Carrington complex today.

Only United's injured contingent were expected at the training ground, with the rest of the first-team squad given the day off, and Rooney's non-appearance has eased fears that he aggravated or sustained a problem during a typically hard‑fought clash with Liverpool.

Rooney suffered inflamed tendons in a kneecap following England's friendly against Egypt on 3 March, when his 86-minute appearance at Wembley prompted Sir Alex Ferguson to suggest the striker's determination to play had contributed to the injury and subsequent absence at Molineux. Sunday marked the striker's 45th game this season, with the demands of the Premier League title race, Champions League and a World Cup to come.

Michael Owen, meanwhile, has admitted he has no chance of featuring this season but remains committed to his contract despite the frustrations of his first season in Manchester.

Owen, who suffered a detached hamstring in the Carling Cup final victory over Aston Villa, also revealed he has an option for a third season at United as part of his free transfer from Newcastle United last summer.

The 30-year-old said: "I had the operation two weeks ago, so I'm going to be on crutches for six weeks now. I'm not allowed to do anything on it for six weeks, so I am definitely out for the season. I'm just looking to next season now. And I'll be back in a United jersey.

"I've got another year left on my contract here and have the option of a third as well. I've had a great time here and I am really looking forward to being back next season."

Meanwhile, Rio Ferdinand has stressed his side's enthusiasm for the pressure of the Premier League title chase. "This is probably the best title run-in for years," said the England captain. "There are three teams in it, which makes it fantastic for the fans and the neutrals to watch."

The striker limped away from Old Trafford following Sunday's 2-1 victory over Liverpool and is thought to be suffering from an inflamed tendon.

Rooney was initially informed the knee issue would clear up in one month but the irritation persists. Although the problem does not prevent him from playing for United, it is causing discomfort and swelling after matches.

The 33-goal striker is central to United's hopes of winning silverware this season and with a key clash with Premier League title rivals Chelsea and a Champions League quarter-final against Bayern Munich on the horizon, Rooney may well be spared Saturday's trip to the Reebok Stadium.

The knee problem first arose ahead of the Carling Cup final and Ferguson left the 24-year-old on the bench to give him a rest but had to call on his services after Michael Owen got injured just 30 minutes into the match.

Rooney then played again on the heavy Wembley pitch days later for England and was criticised by United boss Sir Alex Ferguson for staying on for 86 minutes of the friendly against Egypt.

United are unable to give their star player much rest during the title run in and with just 80 days to go before the World Cup starts England coach Fabio Capello will be keeping a close eye on his prized asset.

Coyle hoping Rooney misses weekend clash

Bolton manager Owen Coyle admits he’s hoping Wayne Rooney is rested when Bolton take on Manchester United at the weekend.

The champions visit the Reebok Stadium in good form, having won their last 4 league games, with Wayne Rooney scoring in the last 3.

Bolton boss Coyle believes Rooney sits on the same pedestal as the likes of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo and has his fingers crossed that a slight knee injury could rule him out of Saturday’s clash.

“If you’re asking me whether I am glad Wayne Rooney might not be in the team, then of course I am. I’d rather not face him,” Coyle told the Bolton News.

“Along with Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi he’s one of the top three players in the whole world at the moment.

“So any manager would be glad of the chance not to face him, if indeed that proves to be the case.

He won’t be counting his chickens though, and knows that even without Rooney United carry a major goal threat.

“But United have a team full of quality international players, so we know we’ll have to be at our very best, no matter what happens.”

With Chelsea and Arsenal potentially moving ahead of the Reds in their 3 o'clock kick-offs on Saturday, United must keep up the pace in the tea-time start at Bolton...

Form guide: Bolton are now pretty much safe from relegation, and look much more steady under Owen Coyle. Their form overall remains a little erratic. Their last four games have yielded a 2-1 win at West Ham, a 4-0 loss at Sunderland, a 4-0 win against Wigan, and a 2-0 defeat to Everton. But at home they have proved very difficult to beat this year. United, on the other hand, have lost just once in the last 13 in all competitions, scoring 35 goals.

Ins and outs: Wayne Rooney apparently hobbled away from OT on Sunday with a reported knee injury, but he should be fit to play - although could this be a game that Sir Alex decides to rest him, with Chelsea and Bayern Munich ties to follow? The Reds are without long-term absentees Wes Brown (metatarsal), Michael Owen (hamstring), Anderson (knee ligament) and John O'Shea (thigh), while Owen Hargreaves continues his gradual rehabilitation from double knee surgery. MANCHESTER - Manchester United bisa berfas lega. Trio pemain kuncinya Wayne Rooney, Ryan Giggs dan Paul Scholes telah pulih dari cedera dan siap memperkuat United saat mengahdapi Bolton Wanderers, akhir pekan ini.

Diketahui, beberapa waktu lalu ketiga pemain di atas memang diragukan tampil dalam waktu dekat. Rooney mengalami cedera lutut, Giggs menderita cedera pada pergelanangan tangan, sementara Scholes berkutat dengan cedera engkel. Ketiganya pun sempat diprediksi bakal absen saat United bertandang ke markas Bayern Munich pada leg pertama babak perempat final Liga Champions, akhir bulan ini.

Namun kini, ketiganya dikabarkan telah pulih. Pelatih United Sir Alex Ferguson bahkan mengkonfirmasi bahwa Rooney, Giggs dan Scholes sudah bisa tampil saat United melawat ke Reebok Stadium, markas Bolton Wanderers pada lanjutan Premier League, Minggu (28/3/2010).

“Wayne (Rooney) telah fit dan tak ada masalah dengan lututnya,” papar Ferguson sebagaimana dikutip Goal, Sabtu (27/3/2010).

Rooney, Scholes and Giggs fit

Wayne Rooney is fit and available to play at Bolton if selected, despite press reports earlier in the week claiming that he was struggling with a knee injury.

The United striker is in flying form, with 18 goals in his last 15 games, and he could again lead the line for the Reds at the Reebok Stadium. Also available to play on Saturday tea-time are experienced pair Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs.

"Wayne is fit and there's nothing wrong with his knee," Sir Alex told reporters at Carrington on Friday morning, responding to questions about the 24-year-old's fitness.

"Scholes is okay again after an ankle knock and Ryan is a further week on with his training. Whether I start him or not is another matter. But his and Scholes' experience is invaluable at this time of year.

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has confirmed Wayne Rooney has no injury problems.

Rooney had a knee injury earlier this month and looked to be limping heavily as he left Old Trafford following Sunday's win over Liverpool.

But Ferguson said: "He's OK, there's no problem. He had some bad bruising for a couple of weeks but he's played [since then] and there's no problems with the knee."

Ferguson may start with Ryan Giggs, who came on as a substitute against Liverpool after five weeks out with a broken arm. John O'Shea is back in training and should be available from the beginning of April.

Lawan Bolton, Ferguson Tak Cuma Ingin Menang

The 21 year-old unashamedly admits to enjoying the 'boring' lifestyle shunned by most footballers of a similar age. While many of his contemporaries collect Hummers and bling as gratuitous symbols of their wealth, Lee is content to amass points on his Tesco Clubcard as he wanders anonymously around his local store in Horwich.

Yet when he lines up against Manchester United's Ji-Sung Park, his fellow South Korean, at the Reebok on Saturday, Lee will be one half of the double act that will cause bouts of insomnia in Seoul, Suwon and Busan.

In football terms, Lee versus Park is Korea's equivalent of Rooney versus Gerrard, but bigger. Park is the megastar of Asian football and Lee, his international room-mate, is viewed as the emerging force who will eventually assume No 1 status.

In the north-west of England, however, the two men live life beneath the radar. Boring it may be, but that is just how Lee likes it.

He said: "When I knew I was coming to Bolton, I got in touch with Ji-Sung to ask about how life is around Manchester and he gave me lots of really good advice.

"He told me it was going to be a really boring lifestyle here, but I love the boring life. In Korea, we are chased by fans because we are two of the bigger stars back there. We get mobbed, so it's nice that we can live the quiet life over here. It's a more comfortable life for us in England.

"I like living in Bolton. It's a quiet place, but it's really convenient because it means I don't need to drive very far. I go in Tesco and I have my Clubcard, so I am very happy here."

While Park's reputation has grown steadily at United in the five years he has spent at Old Trafford since arriving from PSV Eindhoven, Lee remains a comparative unknown outside Bolton. His unfettered attacking talents have caught the eye, however, with United one of a host of clubs to have noted his pace, bravery and work-rate.

Park has admitted in Korea that he views Lee as the player who will become the country's next big star, but while Lee admits that the two men have become close friends, Park's celebrity initially made him fearful of the United midfielder.

Lee said: "Before we became friends, I was a bit afraid of Ji because he's such a big star in Korea. I was in awe of him. We are room-mates with the national team, but I always did whatever I had to do to make sure he was comfortable.

"But now we are like brothers. We go out together to have meals quite a lot and enjoy eating together. I prefer it when Ji Sung cooks at his apartment to any of the restaurants we go to. He is a really good cook and does a very good Korean spicy chicken.

"He hasn't come to my house yet, though, because he has a PlayStation 3 and I only have a PlayStation 2, so that might be the reason!

"Sometimes we play as United against Bolton, playing for our own teams. But I must admit that in all the United v Bolton games we've had, I have never won."

Victory for Bolton at the Reebok will all but banish any lingering relegation fears, but such a result would inflict a dent in United's title ambitions.

Having witnessed the countless Park billboards throughout Korea prior to his £2.2 million transfer from FC Seoul to Bolton last summer, however, Lee knows that the huge Korean TV audience for Saturday's game will be rooting for a United victory.

He said: "There are a lot of United fans in Korea, so they will be expecting them to beat Bolton. Maybe I can disappoint them. If both me and Ji-Sung can score, we will all be happy but I want to beat him for once."

Bolton - Manchester United tak membiarkan Chelsea berlama-lama duduk di puncak klasemen. 'Setan Merah' kembali menempati posisi itu setelah melumat Bolton Wanderers 4-0.

Di Reebok Stadium, Minggu (28/3/2010) dinihari WIB, MU yang dapat perlawanan alot membuka kemenangan lewat gol bunuh diri Jlloyd Samuel tujuh menit sebelum turun minum.

Sempat membuang peluang emas bikin gol, Dimitar Berbatov kemudian malah mencetak sepasang gol pada menit 69 dan kemudian 78. Darron Gibson yang masuk menggantikan Darren Fletcher melengkapi kemenangan dengan gol pada menit 82.

Hasil ini membuat MU kembali memuncaki klasemen yang selama beberapa saat dijejak Chelsea. MU dengan poin 72 kini hanya berjarak satu angka saja dari Chelsea dan empat angka dari Arsenal yang ada di posisi tiga.

Jalannya Pertandingan

Di awal pertandingan, MU masih sulit mengembangkan permainan karena ketatnya kawalan pemain-pemain Bolton. Akibatnya, MU pun mencoba menggedor lewat lini kedua seperti tendangan jarak jauh Paul Scholes pada menit 17.

Dua menit kemudian, Dimitar Berbatov menghentak setelah menyambar umpan silang Darren Fletcher dari kanan. Datang dari sudut sempit dan tak terduga, Jussi Jaaskelainen masih bisa mengamankan gawang untuk menghasilkan sepak pojok.

Dari tendangan penjuru, MU membuat kemelut di muka gawang Bolton. Di akhir kemelut itu, Fletcher mengoper ke arah Jonny Evans yang membuang peluang emas setelah sepakannya jauh melambung di atas mistar gawang.

Johan Elmander menerima umpan terobosan pada menit 27. Kesempatan itu dimanfaatkan benar oleh Elmander dengan menembakkan bola tepat ke arah gawang meski Edwin van der Sar sigap menghalau. Serangan apik dari tuan rumah.

Enam menit kemudian MU membangun serangan dengan Berbatov di akhir serangan tersebut. Namun, usai menerima bola dari Nani lagi-lagi Berbatov belum mampu mengubah skor.

MU akhirnya unggul juga pada menit 38. Dari umpan silang Ryan Giggs di sisi kiri bola malah disambar Jlloyd Samuel untuk diteruskan ke gawang sendiri, dengan Fletcher membayangi.

Van der Sar kembali melakukan penyelamatan gemilang pada menit 40. Dia meregangkan tubuh untuk menepis bola hasil tendangan Fabrice Muamba yang mengarah ke gawangnya.

Bolton memiliki peluang menyamakan skor di menit akhir babak pertama setelah mendapat tendangan bebas di tepi kotak penalti. Tapi skor 1-0 tak berubah di paruh pertama ini.

Dua menit memasuki babak kedua, Berbatov melakukan penetrasi ke pertahanan Bolton dan bekerja sama satu-dua untuk memasuki area penalti. Sialnya, dia malah terpeleset alih-alih menyepak bola.

Berbatov ganti memberi umpan pada menit 52. Dari sebuah rancangan serangan, Berbatov menyontek bola ke arah Fletcher yang langsung meneruskan dengan sepakan meski masih luput dari gawang.

MU akhirnya menggandakan keunggulan pada menit 69. Dari sisi kanan, bola digulirkan dari Valencia, Giggs dan kemudian Fletcher yang menyambut dengan sepakan keras dari luar kotak penalti. Jaaskelainen masih bisa menghalau tapi bola tak lekat ditangkap dan Berbatov pun meneruskan bola muntah.

Berbatov beraksi lagi untuk membuat MU unggul 3-0. Dari penetrasi Nani mengecoh pemain lawan di sayap kiri, bola lantas disepaknya ke depan gawang. Berbatov yang sudah menanti pun tinggal menyonteknya saja ke dalam gawang.

Darron Gibson ikut sumbang gol tak lama setelah masuk menggantikan Fletcher. Menyambut umpan Nani dari sayap kiri, sepakan keras Gibson dari dalam kotak penalti tak kuasa ditahan Jaaskelainen pada menit 83.

MANCHESTER, KOMPAS.com — Kemenangan Manchester United atas Bolton Wanderers tak lepas dari kerja tim yang solid selama 90 menit. Semua pemain berjasa. Namun, Pelatih Sir Alex Ferguson menunjuk beberapa orang yang paling menonjol.

Di lini belakang, kiper Edwin van der Sar patut mendapat acungan jempol. Kiper asal Belanda itu dua kali melakukan penyelamatan gemilang, yakni saat menepis tendangan dari sudut sempit oleh Johan Elmander dan sepakan jarak dekat Fabrice Muamba.
