23. JONNY EVANS
Birthdate: 02 Jan 1988
Birthplace: Belfast, Northern Ireland
Position: Defender
Appearances: 37
Goals: 0
Joined United: 01 Jul 2004
United Debut: 26 Sept 2007 v Coventry City (H)
International N. Ireland
Belfast-born Jonathan Evans is a tall and agile centre-back. An intelligent defender, he combines an uncompromising physical approach with the ability to pass the ball out from the back.
Jonny has risen through the United ranks to become an integral part of the first team squad, with Sir Alex Ferguson admitting: "His United future is assured." The Northern Ireland international - who received his first call-up before he had even made his United debut - has blossomed into one of the most promising young defenders around.
Ever since he was handed a Champions League squad number at the start of the 2005/06 season, aged just 17, Evans has been a burgeoning talent waiting to burst to prominence. Handed his opportunity by the sale of Gerard Pique in the summer of 2008, Jonny did that during the course of the 2008/09 campaign.
Whenever called upon, Jonny's ice-cool calm is immediately apparent, even on huge stages like the San Siro or Stamford Bridge. His capacity for handling pressure is incredible, and stems partially from the extensive experience he gained out on loan.
Roy Keane, Jonny's boyhood hero, enlisted his former team-mate when he took the managerial reins at Sunderland, and Evans played a lead role in helping the Black Cats reach the Premier League. Midway through the 2007/08 campaign, by which time Jonny had made his United debut against Coventry, Keane came calling again and took Evans back to the Stadium of Light for another six months.
After returning from Wearside, he featured in every one of United's 2008/09 pre-season games, a telling precursor of the youngster's growing status in the eyes of Sir Alex Ferguson.
Sure enough, Evans quickly became the Reds' contingency plan for whenever the rock-solid partnership of Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic was broken up, filling the breach in every competition - including the Reds' Club World Cup final and League Cup final victories, while 16 Premier League starts ensured a hat-trick of medals for the young defender.

EVANS RISKS FERGIE FURY
3rd September 2009 - By Kevin Francis, dailystar.com
JONNY Evans could be heading for trouble with his Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson after putting country before club.
Defender Evans has told Northern Ireland manager Nigel Worthington he will be available for his country’s two most important games in a quarter of a century.
He needs an operation on a troublesome ankle but has put the hospital visit on ice until after he plays in two vital World Cup qualifying games against Poland on Saturday and Slovakia next *Wednesday at Windsor Park.
The ankle injury has dogged him for the last nine months and forced him to miss last weekend’s victory over Arsenal.
If Evans, 21, aggravates it while playing for the Irish, it could hamper United who currently have *injured Rio Ferdinand sidelined.
But Evans, who is with the Northern Ireland squad in Belfast, is desperate to help push them into the World Cup finals.
They are currently *second in Group Three, two points behind leaders Slovakia.
Boss Worthington said: “Jonny called me to say that he needs to have an operation. But he wants to try to battle through the next two internationals and see how he copes with that.
“It’s great news for me and the squad that Jonny wants to keep going and make himself available for the games and he *recognises the *importance of the games.”
And Worthington got another boost with the news that West Brom’s Chris Brunt could be available for the Slovakia game.
Brunt, 24, is definitely out on Saturday, but *revealed yesterday he could make a surprise *return on Wednesday.
The midfielder said: “I trained a little bit on *Tuesday and hopefully by the end of the week I will be back in full training.
“I think I’ll be fine for the Plymouth game at home and for the football club that’s my main *priority.
“It would be nice to be fit for Northern Ireland next Wednesday because these are the two biggest games we’ve had for a long time.”

Jonny Evans may be called upon for the rough and tumble of a visit to Stoke this weekend. If so, he’ll likely prove once again why he’s moved so seamlessly into the senior United side. Here he tells us what life is like in the first team…
How pleased were you with last season?
At the start of the season I didn’t expect to be involved as much as I was. To get the Carling Cup, especially the way we won it with a lot of young players playing, was very pleasing.
What are you striving for this year?
To be involved as much as I can. People say you can have a good first season because of the adrenaline that comes with it, but the second season is always harder. So I want to remain consistent, put in good performances and improve as a player.
How did coming through the ranks here prepare you for life in the first team?
I’ve had some great coaches along the way, particularly Paul McGuinness . He’s very intense and you can see how dedicated he is to Manchester United, he absolutely loves the club and puts everything into his coaching. Working with him in the youth team gives you an insight into what it means to work at Manchester United. He developed me as a person and as a player. He makes you realise you’ve got to put the work in for yourself if you’re going to become a better player.
Do you feel like you’re a fully fledged United player now?
You don’t sit down and think ‘I’m a United player now’ – especially not after a handful of games. There are plenty of players who’ve played up to 100 games for United and aren’t well remembered. You want to make your mark on the history of the club and be remembered. Only then can you say ‘I made it at United’.
What are the highlights of your United career to date?
I’d have to say the whole of last season. The Carling Cup and the Club World Cup and winning the Premier League. I don’t think many players get that in their whole career so to get that in one season was unbelievable.
Are we going to see a goal from you this season?
I don’t know why I bother going up for corners any more! I look up to Rio Ferdinand and he’s not scored too many goals, so I’m just following in his footsteps!
Who’s been your toughest opponent on the pitch?
I’ve played against some really good forwards but one of the toughest opponents I’ve played against is Rob Hulse at Derby last year. People wouldn’t class him up there with the likes of Torres and Drogba but he puts himself about, he’s really good in the air and he’s a player I didn’t enjoy playing against.
And what about on the training field?
I have to say Wayne Rooney … because if I don’t he’ll moan!

Jovial Sir Alex Ferguson drops Manchester United's Jonny Evans in a bit of trouble and strife

Young Manchester United central defender Jonny Evans learned one valuable lesson on Tuesday afternoon: never take your girlfriend to a press conference.
Seated alongside Sir Alex Ferguson at the top table at Old Trafford, the 21-year-old Northern Irishman listened attentively as his manager spoke earnestly about the benefits that marriage has brought to Wayne Rooney’s life and football.
http://i281.photobucket.com/albums/kk224/supernan_17/je.jpg
It wasn’t long before the spotlight was on him, though, when he was asked by Sportsmail if maybe it was time for him to tie the knot with his girlfriend, Kate.
Northern Ireland defender Evans replied: ‘I really don’t want to talk about it, especially as my girlfriend is sitting in the middle of you all.
‘She is on a work placement with ITV this week.’
As all eyes turned to pick out an embarrassed-looking Kate, Ferguson seized his chance.
‘Get him tied down, dear,’ Ferguson said with a laugh.
‘Rings are cheap now.’

Jovial Sir Alex Ferguson drops Manchester United's Jonny Evans in a bit of trouble and strife
versi Indonesia :
Fergie: Segeralah Menikah, Evans
Rossi Finza Noor - detiksport
Mau tahu jawaban Evans? "Saya tak mau membicarakan ini. Apalagi pacar saya ada di antara Anda semua. Dia sedang bekerja untuk ITV minggu ini," demikian dia. Ternyata sang kekasih ada di ruangan tersebut dan tengah menjadi reporter untuk sebuah stasiun televisi.
Mendengar jawaban pemainnya, Fergie pun balas berkomentar.
"Menikahlah, nak. Harga cincin sekarang murah," tandas Fergie sembari tersenyum.

Watch out Premier League, Manchester United defender Jonny Evans claims he's now ready to show his true ability
http://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2009/10/20/article-1221746-06DC5183000005DC-3_468x286.jpg
Manchester United defender Jonny Evans has warned the rest of the Premier League that he is now getting confident enough to fully express himself on the pitch.
The Northern Irish centre-back, 21, was a more than able deputy to Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic last season and is staking a claim to be one of Sir Alex Ferguson's first-choice defenders.
But Evans has insisted that he's merely been playing safe so far in his career and is now ready to take his game to the next level by being more influential with the ball at his feet.
Manchester United's Jonny Evans, right, fights for the ball against Bolton Wanderers' Kevin Davies
'I'm still learning and improving all the time,' he told United Review. 'I feel like there's a lot more to come from me. I had a decent season last season, but I was playing within myself a bit.
'I've got to learn how to express myself more on the pitch. Last year, because it was my first real season in the team, I just stuck to the defending side of things. This year I need to try and get on the ball and express myself.
'I was making a conscious decision within myself to play it safe and make sure I wasn't at fault for any goals, and just generally to concentrate on defending above all else.
Jonny Evans
'I'm not saying I'll be trying to dribble all the way through the opposition from now on, just that I need to be a bit more outgoing on the pitch and more commanding.'
The increasingly impressive displays from Evans has led Ferguson to admit he even finds it difficult to leave the Belfast-born centre-back out of the team. But Evans is taking his boss's comments with a pinch of salt.
'I think the gaffer gives the players little boosts sometimes. He's going to have to leave me out at times during the season, and he can say things that make you feel good while he's leaving you out.
'It's nice that he's saying those things, and if he's thinking that way then it shows that I'm doing something right. That's good, because Rio and Nemanja are unbelievable players.'

Manchester United FC: I'm not sure if I'll ever get a goal, Jonny Evans
Manchester United FC: JONNY EVANS is beginning to despair of ever breaking his Manchester United goalscoring duck.
The Northern Ireland international has excelled during the past two seasons at Old Trafford.
In fact, his performances have been so good, Sir Alex Ferguson has wondered out loud whether he is being fair with the 21-year-old when he leaves him out of his Red Devils starting line-up.
Considering the alternatives are Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic, that statement alone says much about Evans’ recent form.
What he cannot do though is score.
Another chance went begging on Saturday when he failed to steer a header past Bolton keeper Jussi Jaaskelainen.
It was another frustrating failure for the Belfast-born youngster, who admits he is now getting irritated by the problem.
“I don’t think I will ever get a goal,” he groaned.
“I saw it on the replay and I should have done better. I should have put it more in the corner but you see the glory and close your eyes.”
Evans will play in Moscow tomorrow when United take on CSKA in the Luzhniki Stadium looking to maintain their 100% record in Group B.
He said: “I am still learning and improving all the time but I feel like there is a lot more to come.
“Last season was a decent one for me but I was playing within myself a bit.
“This year I need to try and get on the ball and express myself a bit more. I am not saying I will be trying to dribble all the way through the opposition from now on, just that I need to be a bit more outgoing on the pitch.

Manchester United will bounce back from Liverpool loss, insists Jonny Evans
Defender Jonny Evans has scoffed at suggestions Manchester United may be on the wane in the Barclays Premier League.
A 2-0 defeat against Liverpool at Anfield saw the champions remain in Chelsea's slipstream.
After helping United defeat Barnsley in the Carling Cup on Wednesday, Evans wants more of the same tomorrow when Blackburn visit Old Trafford.
http://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2009/10/30/article-1224024-06DC5183000005DC-337_468x294.jpg
A long season: Jonny Evans (right) is unfazed by Manchester United's slip up
He said: 'We went to Anfield last season and lost, yet went on to win the league. While Liverpool deserved to win at the weekend, we all know it is a long season.
'It is going to be a good game on Saturday, and a chance for us to get back on track in the league after beating Barnsley in the cup. That's what we aim to do.'
Manager Sir Alex Ferguson is set to shuffle his pack again, after making 11 changes against the Coca-Cola Championship side. But he will be without Gary Neville, who is suspended after being sent off at Oakwell, while Darren Fletcher remains doubtful with a groin injury.
Ferguson was pleased with the way his inexperienced team overcame difficult cup opponents. Evans added: 'The young players in that side all train with the first team. It is the norm for us.
http://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2009/10/30/article-1224024-06F59934000005DC-599_468x286.jpg
Back on track: Evans is targeting victory over Blackburn on Saturday to make up for last week's Fernando Torres-inspired defeat to Liverpool (above)
'We all know what is expected and we all bond well together. No matter who the manager picks, I have never seen anyone sulk. He has a good balance in the squad and tries his best to keep everyone happy.'
United have submitted a claim of mistaken identity to the Football Association, after Fabio da Silva was booked by referee Chris Foy against Barnsley.
Instead the offender - for a challenge on Jamal Campbell-Ryce - was his twin brother Rafael.
The FA confirmed they have been approached by United, and the submission will be heard on Tuesday by a regulatory commission.

For the last two seasons the Rio Ferdinand-Nemanja Vidic axis was rated the strongest partnership in Europe.
They were the foundation for United's 2008 Moscow Champions league success.
Both were shortlisted for UEFA's Defender of the Year award in 2008 and Vidic was again nominated last August.
The Anglo-Serb alliance resisted the threat of Didier Drogba in Russia and then clamped down on Nicolas Anelka in extra-time.
It was the culmination of a strong showing that also brought the Reds the title. They sustained it for the large part of last season again when fit and, on the strength of his form, Vidic became Old Trafford's fans and player's Player of the Year.
Favour
It also brought his name into focus for Barcelona as the Spaniards looked to bolster their European champion defence.
Sir Alex Ferguson had put together a duo that looked to have nailed down United's central defensive positions for years to come.
It left Wes Brown abandoning his original position in favour of the right-back spot.
And for coveted youngster Jonny Evans, on the face of it, it spelt a frustrating time ahead understudying two players at the top of their powers and strength.
But Ferdinand's calf and back problems have contributed to a loss of form and a worrying injury prognosis as the Reds struggle to get to the root of the trouble.
Vidic has had his own calf problems and a dip in his form.
The Serb was on the bench at Chelsea but Fergie wasn't keen on throwing him back into a fight with Drogba and Anelka, having missed three matches with injury and suspension.
Brown and Evans' form against CSKA Moscow had convinced the United boss he needn't risk the 29-year-old.
Against the very same Chelsea attack that Ferdinand and Vidic had brilliantly contained in the Luzhniki Stadium in 2008, the Evans-Brown ticket produced a similarly stubborn resistance. Now the central defensive pecking order is no longer cut and dried.
Ex-Old Trafford defender Kevin Moran says the turnaround is good for the Reds.
"The Rio-Nemanja duo looked a long-term thing. But all of a sudden it is no longer nailed on.
"But nobody should think of writing them off. That is foolish, but now both of them know for sure they have a couple of players breathing seriously down their necks.
"Arguably there isn't a bigger test in Europe at the moment than facing Drogba and Anelka. But Jonny and Wes held their ground. Neither of the Chelsea forwards could get any change out of them. They didn't win the aerial battle and didn't get behind the United pair."
Sir Alex Ferguson has consistently stated that 21-year-old Evans has a sure-fire future at Old Trafford.
And Moran believes he can become the rearguard leader.
"From the very first time I saw Jonny I could see that this was a young man who wasn't going to get fazed by anything," Moran added.
"He is only going to get better and better as he learns about the position and also about bossing others.
"I think he has it in him to do that and organize well. I have no doubt he will be a big central figure in years to come."
Brown burst onto the scene as an 18-year-old in 1998, but a career scattered with long-term injuries has hampered the Mancunian.
Missed
He had to fill in as a right back to ensure he remained a first- team squad member.
He had done just that in the 2007-08 campaign and played more games than any other outfield United player. But last term his injury curse struck again and he missed all but 12 matches.
However, the wobbles and woes of the Ferdinand-Vidic pairing have presented Brown with a new chapter in the centre of defence.
"Wes is looking excellent again," Moran added. "He can play either position and I wouldn't like to say which is his best. Ferdinand and Vidic will get back but they will have tough competition now."

Jonny Evans Rusak Konsolidasi Pantai Gading
http://www.kompas.com/data/photo/2009/11/12/0227395p.jpg
(SKY)

United defender determined to not get carried away
Manchester United defender Jonny Evans insists he has no intention of resting on his laurels as he bids to cement his place as a regular in Sir Alex Ferguson's first team.
The Northern Ireland international has made substancial strides this season as he has been relied on heavily in the absence of Rio Ferdinand through injury.
Evans, 21, impressed last term as he clocked up over 30 appearances in a campaign that saw United win the Premier League and Carling Cup.
While he looks to be more and more comfortable as a regular starter, Evans
is also fully aware Ferguson is constantly looking for young players to improve and not be distracted by off-field activities.
He said: "It is very rare for him to say anything bad about his players. He always gives them 100 per cent backing. It is great to have that from a manager.
"You have to be on your toes as well as you cannot upset him. You have seen what he has done in the past. If you you are taking your eye off the ball, he will get rid of you.
"He treats everyone as men. Everyone has got to deal with certain situations but if you need to go to him, he is there for you. He just wants you to enjoy your football.
"I played over 30 games last season, which was more than I expected. It is great to get those games under your belt. But I know I still need to improve as there are some fantastic players here."

Manchester United management are confident Jonny Evans can handle the success that is now coming his way.
Reserve team coach Ole Gunnar Solskjaer does not think Evans will get big-headed.
"He is a great lad who has come through the ranks and the system," said the former United striker.
"He realises that when you go into the first team you don't suddenly change your character. He knows where he comes from."

Man Utd ace Giggs: Evans looks a natural

Ryan Giggs is convinced Jonny Evans will be a bedrock of future Manchester United teams for many years to come.
Giggs, the most decorated player in United's history, is convinced Evans has a glittering future in the game.
"The performances he has put in, he looks as though he has played there 10 years," the Welsh veteran told BBC Northern Ireland.
"He has come into a team that has a centre-half partnership of Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic.
"If one of them is not playing and Jonny comes in, to say you don't miss one of those players, is a great compliment to him and it is true as well."

Alex Ferguson Keeps Me Grounded At Manchester United - Jonny Evans
Ulsterman refuses to get carried away with success…
Manchester United defender Jonny Evans may have enjoyed a meteoric rise to the ranks of the Old Trafford first team over the past couple of seasons but he is not letting it go to his head.
There is a good reason for that too – United manager Sir Alex Ferguson won't tolerate anything less than the highest standards from his players.
"It is very rare for him to say anything bad about his players. He always gives them 100 per cent backing. It is great to have that from a manager," Evans told BBC Northern Ireland.
"You have to be on your toes as well, as you cannot upset him. You have seen what he has done in the past. If you are taking your eye off the ball, he will get rid of you.
And it is not just his manager keeping an eye on the Northern Ireland international. The player's family have moved across from Belfast to Manchester and he enjoys their close support.
"If I am at not at my house, I go around to their house, maybe having dinner and spending the day with them," Evans added.
"They tell me I don't have to be flash. People see footballers and have this perception they are all flash and throwing money around. They have always encouraged me not to be like that."

Manchester United defender Jonny Evans intends to remain grounded - as he wants to stay on the right side of Sir Alex Ferguson.
At 21 Evans is making giant strides at Old Trafford but the Northern Ireland international will not rest on his laurels. The Northern Ireland international is fully aware Ferguson is constantly looking for young players to improve and not be distracted by off-field activities.

Madrid Terpikat Jonny Evans
Muchamad Syuhada - Okezone
http://bola.okezone.com/images-data/content/2009/12/21/46/286843/kKP0oDZ2y8.jpg
MADRID - Satu lagi punggawa Manchester United yang dilirik Real Madrid. Setelah terakhir sukses dengan transfer Cristiano Ronaldo, kini mereka dikabarkan ingin meminang bek muda Jonny Evans.
Seperti dilaporkan The People, Senin (21/12/2009) Madrid terus memantau perkembangan Evans.
Fergie in Real Madrid war for Jonny Evans
Sir Alex Ferguson has been dealt another defensive body-blow with old-boy Cristiano Ronaldo telling Real Madrid - get Jonny Evans.
The Spanish giants are scouring the world for the best young central defenders - and Ronaldo has told his Madrid bosses to look no further than United's Irish star (above).
Ronaldo believes Evans has the talent and stature to make a big career for himself at The Bernabeu and he's not been shy in telling Real's coaches that Evans is a class act.
That news won't thrill Old Trafford chief Ferguson who is currently battling a chronic defensive crisis that undermining United's season - as seen in the 3-0 defeat at Fulham yesterday.
Rio Ferdinand has been out for weeks with back problems, while Gary Neville, John O'Shea, Rafael da Silva and even Evans himself are all struggling with injuries.
It was the emergence of Northern Ireland international Evans, 21, that persuaded Ferguson to allow Spanish youngster Gerard Pique to return to Barcelona 18 months ago.
Fergie won't be happy to discover that one of his own former stars is trying to talk Madrid into a move for Evans.
The Irish star has two years left on his present contract but there's no way Ferguson would allow the up-and-coming defender to join one of United's major Champions League rivals.

Evans delighted to be back
United defender looks to forget Leeds display with win at City
By Richard Bailey Last updated: 4th January 2010 - skysports
Jonny Evans is looking to put an injury-plagued two months behind him and help Manchester United recover from their dismal defeat to Leeds.
The defender made his first start since November on Sunday, having suffered with a calf injury, when the Red Devils welcomed their fierce rivals to Old Trafford in the third round of the FA Cup.
The Northern Ireland defender, who turned 22 on Sunday, had his birthday celebrations dampened as the League One leaders claimed a famous 1-0 win thanks to Jermaine Beckford's first-half strike.
However, Evans is just pleased to be back playing after a frustrating time on the sidelines along with a host of other first-team defenders.
"It's frustrating to have an injury at any time during the season but it was especially disappointing in the last two months to have missed so many games," he told the club's official website.
Injury problems
"With a lot of other defenders injured, you know that if you were fit you could get a good run in the side.
"All the other lads that have been on the treatment table recently have been thinking the same thing. So hopefully it won't be too long before we're all back."
Meanwhile Evans admits the only way to put the Leeds upset behind them is to win at Manchester City in the Carling Cup semi-final first-leg on Wednesday.
"We're right in the middle of a really busy time of the season, but as a player it's one you really enjoy because there are lots of big games," he added.
"As well as the league, we've got two big Carling Cup matches against Manchester City. So it's an exciting time, and now I just want to play as big a part as I possibly can."

Manchester United fans judging me more than ever, says Evans
Jonny Evans has admitted he still has plenty to prove as he fears the axe at Old Trafford.
Evans may have slipped seamlessly into the heart of the Manchester United defence but the Northern Ireland international knows his Red Devils dream could turn sour.
There is an intense spotlight on young players at the Theatre of Dreams and Evans did fear succumbing to ‘second season syndrome'. Despite his assured and composed performances, Evans’ progress has been disrupted by injury and a fear his early-season form would not be recaptured.
“I was really disappointed when I got my injury because I was having a really good run in the side and I thought I was doing well,” he said. “It came at an unfortunate time for me.
“It took a lot longer to get back than I thought. I thought it was going to be a couple of days but it turned out to be six weeks before I could get rid of the calf problem.
“At the time I felt really good about myself and my game and I felt everything was clicking.
“I had a really decent first season last year and what I didn't want was for anyone to think that I had this so-called second season syndrome.
“People judge you more in your second year. You are given the benefit of the doubt in your first season.
“I didn't want to be one of those players who dipped in their second season.”
The Newtonabbey man insisted his best football was yet to come.
He added: “I wanted to live up to my standards and progress. You always need to improve. There were probably things last season I wouldn't get away with this year. People expect a lot more of you.”

Evans: Saya Ingin Tampil Maksimal!

“Saya memang tampil cukup lumayan tahun lalu. Tapi, saya tidak mau orang berpikir yang sama pada musim kedua ini,” tegas Evans kepada Manchester Evening News, Jumat (5/2/2010).
“Orang menilai Anda lebih pada tahun kedua. Anda mendapatkan keuntungan dengan keraguan terjadi pada musim perdana. Oleh sebab itu, saya tidak ingin penampilan saya di musim kedua mengecewakan,” tambah bek tengah 22 tahun itu.
“Saya ingin meningkatkan standar mutu permainan. Anda memang harus bisa meningkatkan permainan. Mungkin banyak kalangan berpikir saya tidak akan tampil gemilang musim ini. Orang berharap banyak kepada Anda,” tukasnya.

United starlet ahead of Song, Hart & Ramsey in Young Player of the year poll
http://www.sport.co.uk/public/images_news/Evans%20Rio.jpg
According to Sport.co.uk’s latest poll ‘Who has been the Premier League's Young Player of the Year?’ Manchester United starlet Jonny Evans is leading the way. The 21-year-old Old Trafford defender has 18% of the vote ahead of second placed Arsenal midfielder Alexandre Song. Also in the running is Song’s Emirates teammate and former Manchester United target Aaron Ramsey and Manchester City’s Joe Hart who is currently on loan at high-flying Birmingham City. Others getting a mention are Tottenham’s Aaron Lennon, Everton’s Marouane Fellaini, West Ham United’s Jack Collison, Liverpool FC’s Emiliano Insua and Burnley’s Steven Fletcher.
The current leader has built on his excellent first season at Old Trafford by more than compensating for the loss of Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic for large parts of the campaign for Manchester United, while the current runner-up has been one of Arsenal and Arsene Wenger’s most consistent players this year. Manchester City and on loan Birmingham City keeper Joe Hart is really staking a claim for the England number one jersey, while Tottenham’s Aaron Lennon was lighting up White Hart Lane prior to his untimely injury. Arsenal youngster Aaron Ramsey is beginning to show his true potential, while Everton’s Marouane Fellaini is earning rave reviews from David Moyes. West Ham United are struggling but are thankful to Collison and Liverpool’s Insua continues to impress much like Burnley FC’s Steven Fletcher, but who do you think should win it?
Is the Manchester United starlet the outstanding candidate because of his form for Sir Alex Ferguson in difficult circumstances or is he being outshone by Arsenal’s competitive ball winner at the Emirates? Where does Everton’s gangly Fellaini fit it to the mix given his form at Goodison Park, and what about Joe Hart at Birmingham City or Insua at Liverpool? Is Aaron Lennon’s form for Harry Redknapp’s Tottenham made him a shoe-in for Capello’s England, or has Burnley FC’s Fletcher done more than his Premier League counterparts? Sport.co.uk wants to know your views.
Jonny Evans (Manchester United) 18%, Alexandre Song (Arsenal) 18%, Joe Hart (Manchester City / Birmingham City) 13%, Aaron Lennon (Tottenham) 12%, Aaron Ramsey (Arsenal) 9%, Marouane Fellaini (Everton) 7%, Emiliano Insua (Liverpool) 6%, Jack Collison (West Ham) 6%, Steven Fletcher (Burnley) 2%.

Ferguson: Salah Posisi, Evans Kena Getah
http://www.kompas.com/data/photo/2010/02/20/0438182p.jpg
(SKY)

Evans reveals captaincy dream
Jonny Evans intends to collect another winner's medal on Sunday, but he will not feel really satisfied until he is lifting a trophy as captain.
Evans has always been regarded as one of the brightest home-grown Manchester United prospects.
At 22, the Northern Ireland international has already sailed past 50 first-team appearances for the Old Trafford outfit, picked up a Premier League title and a Carling Cup winner's medal, as well as sitting on the bench during last season's Champions League final defeat to Barcelona in Rome.
It is anticipated he will be rewarded for helping out in a crisis by being named in Sir Alex Ferguson's starting line-up to face Aston Villa at Wembley.
So far, so good then. But the man who drives his girlfriend Kate Wathall to distraction because of his lack of forward planning has one major goal. One day he wants to wear the captain's armband himself.
"My girlfriend absolutely hates it because I don't plan anything," laughed Evans, before turning deadly serious.
"But there are goals in my life that I have set since I was a youngster and being captain of Manchester United is one of them.
"It is something I dream of being and I will give my all to get to that level because if I didn't make it I would feel I let myself down."
Ferguson would doubtless approve of Evans' raising his own personal achievement bar so high.
Yet there is evidence to suggest the Belfast-born youngster is capable of realising such lofty aims.
Quite apart from his enormous talent, Evans has demonstrated that he is not fazed by attention after he became embroiled in allegations that arose out of an ill-advised club Christmas party which were subsequently proved to be unfounded.
It is a curious situation. In Manchester, the city he has made home along with both parents and brother Corry, who is making his own way in the United academy, Evans, whilst recognisable, does not command the attention of more illustrious team-mates.
Back in Belfast, where the desperation for a hero grows annually, it is an entirely different story.
"A lot of kids in Northern Ireland look up to me," he said.
"I would look up to someone who played for Manchester United if I was a young kid now.
"I don't think I would ever get bothered because that is the nature of the place.
"But they are crying out for people they can look up to. David Healy, for instance, is idolised.
"For a small country we have produced outstanding talent and it would be nice to get to that level where people feel like that about me."
Having done documentaries about his background for BBC Northern Ireland, Evans understands a little of what Wayne Rooney has to go through on a daily basis.
As one of the best players in the world, Evans knows Rooney is rarely left alone.
"It is so strange for me," said Evans.
"I have only got to know him over the last year or two but I can see the profile on his life is amazing.
"He is obviously a brilliant footballer, who earns lots of money and scores goals every week.
"But he is also constantly followed. It is surreal and quite hard to understand how someone can deal with that from such a young age."
Evans will partner either Nemanja Vidic or Wes Brown at the heart of United's back four, as he has done for most of the season.
Not that he buys into the argument that the fitness problems which have affected Vidic and Rio Ferdinand for so much of the campaign are automatically good news for him.
Experience comes in many forms, and after below-par displays against AC Milan and Everton recently, this most articulate of footballers was in total agreement with Ferguson's decision to leave him on the bench for Tuesday's victory over West Ham.
"You can't wait for other people to tell you what is wrong with your game," he said.
"I didn't have to criticise myself after Milan or Everton. I know those performances were not up to scratch."
So there you are. Intelligent, self-deprecating, talented, considered. A captain in the making.
In fact, there is only one small reminder of Evans' callowness.
Look at the pictures of United celebrating last year's Carling Cup. A smiling Belfast boy is in the lot.
"Usually the keeper goes second but Ben Foster is so superstitious. He had to go third," he laughed.
"The officials were trying to persuade him to go up the steps second when we collected the trophy but he was having none of it.
"While all this was going on I nipped into the number two position to make sure I was on TV when Rio lifted the trophy.
"It was my first big trophy and I wanted to make sure I was on all the footage. It worked. I am always there."

Jonny Evans set to sign new Manchester United deal, says Ferguson
• Northern Ireland international has 'proved himself'
• Evans has made 64 first-team appearances for United

Sir Alex Ferguson has confirmed Jonny Evans is on the verge of signing a new long-term contract with Manchester United.
After spending a couple of spells on loan at Sunderland, Evans has made real progress in the last two seasons.
The Northern Ireland international has now made 64 first-team appearances for United, the latest coming in Sunday's victory at the Stadium of Light, and has proved himself good enough to stand in for Rio Ferdinand during the defender's increasingly frequent injury absences.
Although there has been no formal announcement from Old Trafford, Ferguson let slip at last night's player-of-the-year awards that Evans has agreed a new deal, which is expected to be confirmed in the coming days.
"Jonny has proved himself," said the United manager. "He has a new contract which helps to provide a good foundation for the club for a long time."

Evans pens new four-year United deal
By Soccernet staff
May 7, 2010
Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has confirmed defender Jonny Evans has signed a new four-year contract with the club.
Evans, 22, has firmly established himself as first-choice back-up to Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic since making his first-team breakthrough at United in 2007.
Ferguson demonstrated his belief in the Northern Ireland international's ability when he allowed Gerard Pique to leave for Barcelona in 2008, and Evans has repaid his manager's faith by performing consistently when called upon to replace Ferdinand or Vidic.
"Jonny has signed a new deal,'' Ferguson said. "We have been working on it for a few months now and I am happy that he has signed.''
Evans has played 28 times for United this season, all of them starts, and has featured in the last three games - victories over Manchester City, Spurs and Sunderland.

Evans: I’ve Supported United All My Life – It’s An Honour to be able to continue To Wear The Badge
-therepublikofmancunia.com-

Jonny Evans has put pen to paper on a contract which will keep him at the club until 2014. Sir Alex Ferguson announced the deal at the Player of the Year awards this week and Evans has today signed.
“I am delighted to have signed a new contract,” Evans said. “I’ve supported Manchester United all my life and it’s a great honour to be able to continue to wear the badge of this great club. I’d like to thank the staff, players and fans for their continued support in my development.”
You can never underestimate the positive effect that having the likes of Paul Scholes, Ryan Giggs and Gary Neville has on our squad. Evans’ attitude is testament to that, with him joining several players in aspiring to spend as long with the club as they have.
“Negotiations started a couple of months ago and went pretty smoothly and I’m glad to have finally signed,” he contined. “It’s nice to have a bit of security. It means I can start planning – little things like that are good. They help you settle and put your mind at ease. It would be nice to stick around as long as the older guys who are signing extensions. They just keep going. The contract is there but you still have to perform for the manager. If your performance levels dropped you could be sold in January. Playing at a club like Manchester United you are always going to be involved in big matches and it’s something I relish. I have really enjoyed the last two seasons. It has been a great experience for me and I have learnt a lot.”

Jonny Evans is armed with a new four-year Old Trafford contract as he prepares to tackle his biggest United challenge.
The 22-year-old Northern Ireland international defender believes his Reds new deal has upped the ante and with Chris Smalling joining United from Fulham the task ahead will become an even bigger test.
“The contract was a great bonus and I was delighted to sign,” Jonny told M.E.N. Sport.
“By the end of the four years, I would like to be a regular and one of the first names on the team sheet.
“It is a big year for me next season because having just signed a new contract the expectations will go up even higher.
“I am 22 and, having signed that new long term deal, I will no longer be classed as the young lad just coming into the squad. I will have been in the squad for two years and people will be expecting a lot of me. There will also be more competition with Chris Smalling coming to the club. But that is all good.
“The extra pressure won’t worry me. I put pressure on myself as much as anyone else will.
"I want to improve and become better so you have to put more pressure on yourself to perform consistently and be a more important figure in the team.”
This season Evans played 28 times in Sir Alex Ferguson’s starting XI. In his breakthrough term last year he started 29 times. But the central defender ended up with regrets.
“It was a bit of a frustrating season both personally and in terms of the club being successful,” he added.
Evans frustration
“It was so frustrating for me because I picked up a few niggly injuries. What was so annoying was that with other players being out injured as well, like Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic, there were chances to get in and get a few games under your belt.
“There were windows of opportunities that I couldn’t take because I was sidelined.
“But I still think I made progress from my first season. I am still maturing but think I am getting better and learning more about myself and the game every week. I think my defending has improved all round.”
Evans was a Premier League title winner in his breakthrough term in 2008-09 and was on the bench in the Champions League final in Rome against Barcelona.
But a quarter-final Euro exit and losing the title to Chelsea has sharpened appetites at Old Trafford.
“It is not nice seeing Chelsea winning the double or watching the Champions League final so it has made us hungrier for success. We will do everything we can to get the trophies back,” said Jonny.
Evans spoke to M.E.N. Sport at the presentation of the Charter Standard plaque to Brooklands Dragons who have seven youngsters at United’s Academy. The fledgling junior club for Under-8s has just completed its inaugural season and has been awarded Charter status by the Cheshire FA.
Head coach Steve Deighan said: “The Charter Standard is the way forward for junior clubs because it proves that all the standards are achieved with the supervision of the County FA.
“It tells the community that you have achieved the standards with regards to child welfare.
That is what is driving it. We have worked with the Cheshire FA and we are delighted to have been granted Charter status.
“It will attract more people to the club. It will open up opportunities for the club to go forward.
“It is important for parents to know that we have qualified coaches, qualified welfare officers and their children are in a safe and disciplined environment.”

There were questions asked of Jonny Evans’ attitude at one point, with him liking the booze and getting a bit too big for his boots (I can only assume this is around the time he had returned from Sunderland on loan after being well-loved and was seeking a permanent move there for first team football). Someone on the staff had a word with his dad, letting him know that Evans’ attitude had been noted, and since then, he’s gone from strength to strength.

Evans eyes goal rush
Jonny Evans underlines the importance of Nemanja Vidic’s new contract and says he expects the goals to flow this season...
How important is it for United to make a strong start?
Last season we were chasing for a long time, but you have to look at our results at the end of the season as ones that proved costly. Chelsea at home and Blackburn away are the games that stick in our minds as the ones that cost us the title. We’re probably renowned for not getting off to good starts, and we’re three games in and two points behind. But things will always change, up and down, during the season.
There have been some hidings dished out so far this season; is someone going to take a hammering from United when everything clicks into place?
That’s something we’re aware of this year; that we should maybe score more goals and give some teams a good thrashing. That’s something we’ll look to do, but in terms of the big scorelines in the first two weeks of the season, I think a few teams were just caught unawares.
We’ve used 4-4-2 in our opening three games – has it been outlined to the players that that will be the more common formation this season?
No, not at all. The manager is very versatile in the way he approaches games. He’s not one to sit there, be stubborn and say ‘we’re playing 4-4-2 this season’. It’ll change from game to game and often within games, because that’s the tactical edge he’s had over the years and it’s made him successful.
How big a boost is it that Nemanja Vidic has signed a new contract?
I’m sure he’s delighted and the fans are delighted that he’s signed; we certainly are. He’s one of the best defenders in the world. He’s just an all-round natural defender who’s very strong in the air. He’s a good reader of the game, he’s quick and a real athlete. Playing alongside people like him, young players like myself can’t help but learn. It’s great to have players like that around the club.
How fierce is the competition for defensive berths now?
That’s what this club’s all about. There’s always a lot of competition for places all over the pitch. Michael Carrick’s been on the bench, Ryan Giggs only started his first game on Saturday, while Michael Owen hasn’t started yet. It’s quite frightening that big names like that aren’t starting, but this club is meant to have quality players pushing for a limited number of positions.
How do you feel your game’s developing?
I’m taking each game as it comes. You do set yourself targets throughout the year and I do want to improve a lot more. Admittedly against Fulham I wasn’t up to my usual standards and I didn’t have the best of games, but sometimes you have to accept that and look forward to rectifying your mistakes in the next game and keep improving with each performance.
The fan’s question...
Is it true that your family missed some of your games when you were on loan at Sunderland because they were at Old Trafford watching United? - Scott the Red, Manchester
If it was a big game then they would have come up to watch me, but we’re a proper United family! We’ve been living over here in Manchester for seven years now and my Dad has probably only missed a handful of United games in that time, and those would have been to watch me or my brother playing.
Are you involved in the predictions league at Carrington?
Yeah, and I’m currently fourth bottom so that’s not going well for me (laughs). I started well last season, gradually got worse during the year and I’ve carried that on this year.
Your brother fancies himself as a Playstation whizz – can you dispute that claim?
No. Corry and I have always been total opposites in terms of computer games. He was this computer geek who would always beat me whenever I played, so we’d end up fighting or I’d break his Playstation controller! It’s not my scene.
What are your other interests?
I try to play a bit of golf, but I’m useless at that too! As footballers we’re meant to be good at golf, but we just pretend we are. People like John O’Shea and Wayne Rooney talk good games, but I’ve not seen evidence on the course to back it up.
