Fletcher takes a break

On behalf of Darren Fletcher, Manchester United wishes to announce that he is taking an extended break from football for health reasons.

Over the past year he has had several absence periods which we have attributed to a viral illness in order to respect his right to medical confidentiality. Darren has, in fact, been suffering from ulcerative colitis (a chronic inflammatory bowel condition) for some time preceding this.

Whilst he was able to maintain remission of symptoms for a considerable period this has proved more difficult recently and Darren’s continued desire to play and his loyalty to both his club and country has probably compromised the chances of optimising his own health and fitness.

He has therefore accepted medical advice to take an extended break from the demands of training and playing in order to afford the best chance possible of achieving full remission once again.

We request that his privacy is respected and hope that the removal of the additional stress associated with speculation regarding his health will also aid his recovery.

Manchester United's Darren Fletcher takes 'extended break'

Manchester United and Scotland midfielder Darren Fletcher is taking an extended break from football because of a serious stomach illness.

A United statement said the 27-year-old is suffering from ulcerative colitis, a chronic inflammatory bowel condition.

His last game was in the 2-2 Champions League home draw against Benfica on 22 November, in which he scored.

The club said Fletcher had "accepted medical advice to take an extended break".

He is taking a rest "in order to afford the best chance possible of achieving full remission once again".

"He is one of the most inspirational players I have had the pleasure of working with and, on behalf of his Scotland team-mates and my backroom staff, I sincerely hope this time off, allied to the support of his family, will enable him to make a full recovery"

The statement added: "Darren's continued desire to play and his loyalty to both club and country has probably compromised the chances of optimising his own health and fitness.

Fletcher signed a new four-year deal until 2015 with United in March.

United defender Rio Ferdinand said on Twitter: "We are going to miss two big players in Fletcher and [Nemanja] Vidic. I hope they both come back fitter and stronger than ever."

Fletcher made only one start for United last term after 1 March and was an unused substitute for the 3-1 Champions League final defeat by Barcelona. He has made 10 appearances in all competitions for United during the current campaign.

Fletcher's absence is another blow to United, who suffered a huge setback last week when they were eliminated from the Champions League in the group stage for only the third time in 16 years.

It is also a big loss for Scotland, for whom Fletcher is an integral figure. Their next match is a friendly against Slovenia in February.

Fletcher's last appearance in international football came in November's 2-1 friendly win for Scotland in Cyprus. He played for 64 minutes before being replaced by Brighton's Craig Mackail-Smith.

Scotland manager Craig Levein said: "I am obviously absolutely devastated for Darren because I know how hard he has worked to get back to playing regularly for his club and country.

"He is one of the most inspirational players I have had the pleasure of working with and, on behalf of his Scotland team-mates and my backroom staff, I sincerely hope this time off, allied to the support of his family, will enable him to make a full recovery."

Levein hailed Fletcher's on-pitch efforts, adding: "Darren has shown tremendous dedication and fortitude, demonstrated by his ability to overcome this illness and perform at the highest level for Manchester United and Scotland.

"I spoke with Sir Alex Ferguson and Darren this week and the most important thing, at this stage, is for the player to be given time to rest and recuperate. Nobody is more committed to his country's cause than our captain.

"He is a central part of our plans for the World Cup 2014 qualifiers but, at this stage, his health is paramount and I would like to reiterate the best wishes of everyone at involved with the national team and the Scottish FA."

Fletcher's illness, which also afflicts five-time Olympic gold medallist Sir Steve Redgrave and former England rugby union captain Lewis Moody, could result in surgery, according to a leading medical specialist.

"Most patients experience periods of good health and periods of bad health," Professor Alastair J M Watson, Professor of Medicine and consultant gastroenterologist at Royal Liverpool University, told BBC Sport.

"In most people, it is quite mild and no more than a minor inconvenience, but in a proportion of patients it can be severe.

"In some cases, it has to be treated by having the bowel removed, but that is the worst-case scenario.

"It is a disease which gets worse in times of stress so resting along with drugs will help.

"It affects about one in 500 people and if anything is getting more common rather than less common."

Fletcher's absence leaves United manager Sir Alex Ferguson with another selection problem.

The club's only specialist midfielders currently available are Michael Carrick, Park Ji-sung, Darron Gibson and Ryan Giggs, although the United have made use of the versatile Phil Jones. Reserve midfielders Paul Pogba and Ravel Morrison are possible options.

United's injured midfielders include Anderson, expected back in February, and Tom Cleverley, who is aiming to return for some Christmas fixtures.

Former Scotland star Pat Nevin said: "It is really bad news but the good thing for Darren is that Manchester United will ensure he gets the best possible treatment and his good health is paramount.

"I watch him regularly for Scotland and they have not just built a team around him as a player, they have built it around his ethics and approach to the game.

"He is honest and incredibly hard-working, so when you examine those qualities it is no surprise he has tried to play through his illness time and time again until he was no longer able to do so."

Manchester United striker Michael Owen said on Twitter: "Wishing Fletch all the best in his recovery.

Profesor Jonathan Rhodes, seorang ahli penyakit inflamasi usus (IBD), telah menangani sejumlah kasus kolitis ulserativa (UC). UC adalah penyakit pada usus besar, suatu penyakit yang mempengaruhi satu dari 500 orang di Inggris, dengan jejak pertama umumnya muncul antara usia 15 dan 30.

Gejalanya seperti, diare & sakit perut yang memiliki efek samping menurunya berat badan. Penyebabnya tidak pernah bisa dipahami dengan baik, tetapi bisa karena bakteri, virus bahkan stres.

Dalam kondisi yang sudah sangat buruk Rhodes mengatakan seseorang yang menderita penyakit tersebut akan sulit utnuk melakukan pekerjaan, jangankan bermain sepakbola, pekerjaan yang lain pun akan sulit. Oleh karena itu, sangat dimengerti mengapa Fletcher harus istirahat dulu dari dunia sepakbola.

Rhodes mengatakan dari dua pertiga kasus, kondisi tersebut bisa pulih kembali dengan sangat baik dan Mereka bisa kembali ke kehidupan normal dan berolahraga. Lalu 1 dari 4 orang harus menjalani operasi besar.

Manchester - Disaat tenaganya sedang dibutuhkan, Darren Fletcher harus absen untuk waktu lama karena terserang virus. Tak tahu kapan Fletcher pulihnya, Sir Alex Ferguson cuma bisa mendoakan kesembuhan untuk anak asuhnya itu.

Musim ini Fletcher sudah harus absen di sejumlah pertandingan, diduga karena masalah kesehatan akibat virus. Dijelaskan Manchester United, absennya Fletcher sebenarnya disebabkan karena masalah usus yang kronis.

Maka saat ini Fletcher pun sedang dalam pengawasan ketat tim medis MU demi memulihkan kondisinya itu. Kapan gelandang asal Skotlandia itu akan pulih belum bisa diketahui.

Kepala Fergie pun kian pusing karena Fletcher sebenarnya dibutuhkan, di tengah hantaman cendera yang menghampiri beberapa pemain tengahnya macam Anderson dan Tom Cleverley. Padahal Flecther sempat bermain saat menahan imbang Benfica 22 November lalu dan mencetak satu gol.

Meski begitu manajer usia 70 tahun tersebut merasa keputusan mengistirahatkan Flecther sudah tepat. Alhasil Fergie pun hanya bisa menunggu dan berdoa untuk kesembuhan pesepakbola 27 tahun yang baru tampil sebanyak 10 kali musim ini.

"Tim medis sudah membuat keputusan yang tepat. Mereka menilai kesehatan Darren adalah hal yang terpenting dan kami sebagai klub sepakat dengan hal itu," aku Fergie di Sky Sports.

"Dia sudah tidak menjalani latihan - dia sedang berada di rumah sakit beberapa hari terakhir. Dia akan istirahat saat ini," lanjutnya.

"Kami kehilangan dia - dia adalah profesional yang hebat dan tidak mudah menggantikannya, namun kami akan memikirkan soal itu. Mudah-mudahan dia bisa pulih sepenuhnya," kata Fergie.

"Jelas ini akan sedikit memakan waktu dan istirahat adalah hal terpenting saat ini. Saya tidak bisa memperkirakan berapa lamanya," tandas Fergie.

Scotland hope Darren Fletcher can return for 2014 World Cup qualifiers

The Scotland manager Craig Levein hopes his captain Darren Fletcher will be available for the start of the 2014 World Cup qualifying campaign in September, despite the Manchester United midfielder taking an extended break from the game with no timescale given on a comeback.

In December United confirmed that the 27-year-old would take a full break from the game in an attempt to overcome the debilitating effects of ulcerative colitis, a chronic inflammatory bowel condition. Fletcher is certain to miss February's international friendly with Slovenia but could return for the start of the World Cup qualifying campaign against Serbia in September.

Levein told the BBC: "He's out for four months complete rest, and then we can reassess things. I'd be desperately hoping [to have him for the qualifiers]. He becomes such an important player for us, not just on the field, but as an example by the way he behaves himself on and off the park and his attitude. So him being out is a huge loss in terms of both his performances and the influence he has on the rest of the group."

Levein also shed some light on Fletcher's battle with the condition, saying: "He's had this for nearly four years now, he's been pushing himself, and he's really suffering it this time. It's just quite remarkable how he's managed. He desperately wants to play every single match – probably to the detriment of his health. He's just a fantastic example of fortitude and desire to his team-mates."

Bola.net - Sir Alex Ferguson mengakui kalau ia dan tim dokter Manchester United (MU) belum bisa memastikan kapan Darren Fletcher benar-benar bisa bermain lagi.

Gelandang Skotlandia ini sudah tidak membela The Red Devils sejak penghujung November tahun lalu. Ia harus beristirahat panjang dalam batas waktu yang belum diketahui, sambil menanti iritasi dalam usus besarnya itu sembuh.

Walau demikian, seperti yang diungkapkan sang manajer, Fletcher ternyata sudah bergabung bersama rekan-rekannya ke camp pelatihan MU di Carrington. Meski ia tak tahu kapan kepastian gelandangnya itu akan comeback.

"Ia sudah berada di pelatihan dalam beberapa hari ini, ia hanya harus keluar rumah itu saja," kata Sir Alex.

"Sulit untuk menentukan kapannya, karena tak ada seorang pun yang bisa menebaknya secara akurat."

The Scotland captain is taking an extended break from football after a chronic bowel complaint and would now appear to be out of action until next season

Manchester United midfielder Darren Fletcher will not play again this season after Sir Alex Ferguson confirmed the news at his press conference yesterday.

Fletcher has not featured for United since November and, although he was an unused substitute against Basle in December, it later emerged that he was suffering from a chronic bowel complaint.

The Scottish midfielder subsequently took an extended break from the game as he wanted to ensure he was fighting fit for next season.

It was therefore generally assumed that the 27-year-old would not be involved again this season, but when Fletcher was spotted at the Etihad Stadium to see United’s 3-2 win over neighbours Manchester City, rumours emerged that he could yet feature again this term.

Other recent reports revealed that Fletcher could be well on the road to recovery faster than United had expected, but speaking before his side’s trip to the Emirates Stadium on Sunday, Sir Alex moved to dismiss such talk.

"I don't expect Fletcher to come back," said the Red Devils' boss.

"Darren will be out for the season."

Sudah lebih dari dua bulan Darren Fletcher hilang dari pertandingan yang dijalani Manchester United. Fletcher dikabarkan masih dalam proses penyembuhan penyakit yang menjangkit ususnya.

Fletcher diperkirakan akan absen sampai musim ini berakhir. Kubu Man. United sebdiri tidak menekan Fletcher untuk sembuh dengan cepat. Red Devils ingin memastikan Fletcher benar-benar dalam kondisi bugar saat kembali bermain.

The Most Underrated player di skuad utama Man United. Kalau lg on fire seperti di musim 09/10, Fletcherinho adl CM terbaik United. Terbukti dng terpilihnya Fletcher di tim terbaik EPL musim 2009/2010 , mengalahkan gelandang bertahan kelas wahid macam Michael Essien , atau Javier Mascherano.

Baca wawancara si Fletch , dia bilang , "Penyakit yg dideritanya akan terus hinggap di tubuhnya, dan dia harus mencari cara supaya bisa terus berkarir sbg pesepakbola profesional dng kondisi tsb."

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has confirmed Darren Fletcher remains on the comeback trail despite midweek rumours that he was about to announce his retirement.

Speculation surfaced in the aftermath of United's defeat at Manchester City on Monday that the Scotland skipper had lost his battle against a chronic bowel condition, that forced him to take a break from the game in December.

Club sources quickly rejected that notion, which Ferguson has now backed up. It is still hoped Fletcher will play some part in United's pre-season programme.

However, as Ferguson acknowledged, an accurate assessment of Fletcher's condition is not easy because the Scotland captain is still being treated by his own medical people.
