Rooney delight at Valencia return

Wayne Rooney says the return to action of Antonio Valencia is "fantastic" for Manchester United.

The Ecuador winger's substitute appearance during Saturday's 2-0 FA Cup triumph over Arsenal was his first since sustaining a serious ankle injury against Rangers in September.

Valencia was a major source of goals for Rooney last term but without him, the England star had managed just eight before Saturday's win at Old Trafford.

Although Valencia was only a bit-part player against the Gunners, the pair were on the field together for less than five minutes before the 25-year-old added a ninth.
"I can't tell you how good it is to see him back out there," Rooney said. "It was Antonio's first game back after six months out and he looked like he'd never been away.

"It's fantastic for him and fantastic for us to have him back and playing the way he did."

GREAT HISTORY

Given the gashed leg Nani suffered at Liverpool will keep him out of Tuesday's Champions League encounter with Marseille, if not the Premier League duel against fellow semi-finalists Bolton next weekend, more is likely to be required of Valencia at Old Trafford this week.

Meanwhile Rooney has explained why he is so "desperate" to win the FA Cup this season.

One of his first memories of supporting Everton was heading to Wembley to watch the Toffees overcome United in 1995.

He has had two opportunities to replicate that success as a player, tasting defeat to Arsenal in 2005 and Chelsea two years later in the first final at the new Wembley.

A semi-final defeat to Everton two years after that twisted the knife a little further, so when Rooney heads south in mid-April, he is determined not to end up a loser.

"I am desperate to win the FA Cup," he said. "It's got great history and I remember watching it as a young kid.

"To lose two finals was devastating so it's a great chance now for us to go on and win it this season."

Rooney Senang Valencia Telah Kembali

Antonio Valencia langsung memberi kontribusi dalam debutnya setelah pulih dari cedera engkel.

Striker Manchester United Wayne Rooney menyambut gembira kembalinya Antonio Valencia. Setelah beristirahat selama enam bulan akibat cedera engkel, Valencia kembali beraksi. Pemain asal Ekuador ini mendapat cedera saat tampil menghadapi Rangers di Liga Champions, September tahun lalu.

Meski hanya sebentar dimainkan saat menghadapi Arsenal di Piala FA, Sabtu lalu, Valencia memberi kontribusi berarti.

Kerjasamanya dengan Rooney membuahkan hasil manis. Rooney sukses menuntaskannya yang memantapkan keunggulan 2-0 atas Arsenal. Dan, United lolos ke semi-final. Rooney pun tak segan memuji penampilan rekannya.

"Sulit mengatakan betapa senangnya menyaksikan dia telah kembali. Ini pertandingan pertama Antonio setelah enam bulan absen. Penampilannya sungguh fantastis. Kami senang dia kembali bermain," ujar Rooney.

Menurutnya, Valencia kembali pada saat yang tepat. Pasalnya, United juga kehilangan Nani yang mengalami cedera.

Kehadiran Valencia menjadikan United makin optimistis saat menjamu Marseille di laga kedua babak 16 besar Liga Champions, Selasa besok. Pada pertemuan pertama, mereka bermain imbang 0-0.

Valencia scoops March award

It's a measure of the impact Antonio Valencia has had on his return from injury that he has been voted United's Player of the Month for March.

The winger made his long-awaited comeback at half-time in the FA Cup win over Arsenal on 12 March and looked like he'd never been away, displaying his usual strength, pace, touch and crossing ability.

The Ecuadorian followed that up with an electric half-hour cameo in the victory over Marseille, before completing his first 90 minutes in six months as United overcame Bolton.

Fans are clearly delighted to have the 25-year-old back. He took half the votes in our poll, narrowly beating Javier Hernandez into second place, with Wayne Rooney and Chris Smalling in third and fourth respectively.

Despite only playing 163 of a possible 450 minutes in March, Antonio Valencia was hugely impressive on his return from a serious injury – to the extent that you voted him ManUtd.com's Player of the Month.

Valencia and Javier Hernandez dominated the poll, with more than 90% of nearly 80,000 votes.

Sir Alex Ferguson has hailed the return to fitness of Antonio Valencia in time for the season's run-in.

The shrewd signing from Wigan underwent surgery after suffering a serious ankle injury during the Champions League draw with Rangers last September.

After a period of rehabilitation, he made his comeback in the FA Cup victory against Arsenal and also impressed in the matches with Olympique de Marseille and Bolton - even winning ManUtd.com's latest Player of the Month award for his efforts in those three fixtures.

"He’s showed in the parts of the games he’s played so far why we’ve missed him," enthused Sir Alex during an interview in the latest Inside United.

"He’s a fantastic footballer and he came on at the right time against Marseille because Nani was starting to wilt a bit after his injury.

"I think Antonio’s ability to get to the dead ball line is a big advantage to us. His football brain was there to see when he made Chicharito’s second goal against Marseille, his pass to Ryan was fantastic."So it’s a big plus point. Having both Antonio and Nani is a big boost for us."

Valencia is currently on international duty with Ecuador but is set to return in time for United's trip to West Ham at the weekend.

United’s win over Chelsea was the sort performance The Reds have been threatening for a while now, but had until last night, failed to deliver over a full 90 minutes.

Every single player on the pitch worked their socks off to give Sir Alex’s men a huge advantage to take back to Old Trafford next week.

Most of the plaudits went to the trio of Wayne Rooney, Michael Carrick and Edwin Van Der Sar. Carrick in particular arguably had his best game in a Red shirt since the 7-1 against Roma in this stage of the competition four years ago.

While some may point to Ryan Giggs as another reason United prevailed or perhaps the return of Rio Ferdinand, the shining light in a team full of star performance was for me, Antonio Valencia. It wasn’t Valencia’s wing play which left me in awe-it was his 40 minute stint at right back which truly caught the imagination.

Valencia gave the sort of performance that Gary Neville would’ve been proud of and was not only immense going forward as one would expect from a winger playing in defence, but didn’t shirk his defensive duties, tackling and battling away with whoever came down Chelsea’s left side.

Much of the British press seemed to agree that Valencia didn’t look out of place in Rafael’s position.

The Mail: “Shifted to right back to cover for the injured Rafael and like Giggs at the weekend, looked happy in defence.

The Guardian: “Classy display.”

The Manchester Evening News: “Again got the starting nod over Nani and the Ecuadorian didn’t disappoint, and also deputised ably as stand-in right back.”

The Telegraph: “Gave United extra discipline on the right”

The Sun: “Adapted well to right-back when Rafael was injured.”

Considering he’s not long back from injury Valencia deserves a lot of credit for such a sterling performance.

Manchester United have got into the swing of things just at the right time.

Competing on three fronts, it appears our players have clicked at the right time. Park has been performing, Rio has returned, Hernandez remains a threat and Rooney has gotten over his poor early season form but arguably one of the biggest factors in our recent form is the return of Antonio Valencia .

Having been out since September after horrifically injuring his ankle against Rangers in the Champions League at Old Trafford, Valencia’s return has been a breath of fresh air for the team and whilst it may be a tad presumptuous his return partly coincides with the change in Rooney’s form.

Speaking to FIFA.Com the Ecuadorian winger spoke about joining United, getting over the injury and United in general:

“I feel really good, I’ve been getting in the team for the last few games and I’m pleased about that. I can now say I’m back to 100 per cent. The six months I spent on the sidelines were quite tough, especially to start with. When you start to see progress it encourages you and all you think about is getting back playing again.”

Joining United from Wigan was a massive step up for the winger, the shadow of Ronaldo loomed large but Valencia quickly established himself as his own player and although it wasn’t easy he puts his assimilation into the team down to the support he received:

“It was hard to adapt during my first year here, but I got through it thanks to my team-mates and the manager.”

Whilst he may feel it was hard to adapt, he praised a player that has taken to being a United player like a duck to water, Javier Hernandez:

“He’s doing really well and it’s taken him no time at all to settle in. It’s made a big difference to United that he feels so at home and is scoring so many goals.”

And of course he had something o say about the man of the moment Ryan Giggs,

“I work hard every day to grow and improve as a player.

“I really like the way Giggs goes about his business, I’ve got a lot of admiration for him. He’s a great pro, a great team-mate, and in my view he’ll be able to carry on playing for a long time yet.”

The first game of this year’s UEFA Champions League group stage on 14 September could unequivocally be classed as a bad day at the office for Manchester United. Held to a frustrating 0-0 draw by Scottish champions Rangers, a far heavier blow was the serious injury suffered by Antonio Valencia, with subsequent media reports stating the winger's broken ankle would sideline him for the rest of the season.

However, both player and club have turned things around in spectacular style since. The Red Devils are clear at the top of the Premier League standings and hold a 1-0 first-leg lead from their Champions League quarter-final against Chelsea, while the Ecuadorian has returned to form and fitness much earlier than first expected.

“I feel really good," Valencia told FIFA.com. "I’ve been getting in the team for the last few games and I’m pleased about that. I can now say I’m back to 100 per cent. The six months I spent on the sidelines were quite tough, especially to start with. When you start to see progress it encourages you and all you think about is getting back playing again.”

His return could scarcely have come at a better time, with United still in the hunt for three major honours in what remains of the campaign. For starters, they are seven points clear of Arsenal at the top of the Premier League, though they have played a game more than the Gunners. “It’s still difficult because we’ve got six tricky games left – they are six finals," Valencia warned. "I just hope that we can keep performing at 100 per cent so that the fans have a title to celebrate."

I’m hoping the final turns out to be United against Real Madrid

In continental competition, meanwhile, last Wednesday’s first-leg win at Chelsea means Sir Alex Ferguson’s charges are a step closer to reaching the last four of the Champions League. “We’re very close but it’s not over yet,” continued the former Wigan Athletic man.

“Chelsea have very good players and they’re always tough opponents. All the teams [still in the competition] are good and anything can happen. But I’m hoping the final turns out to be United against Real Madrid.”

When quizzed on adjusting to life at a Premier League giant, Valencia responded: “It was hard to adapt during my first year here, but I got through it thanks to my team-mates and the manager,” before turning his attention to the swift adaptation of his Mexican colleague Javier Hernandez: “He’s doing really well and it’s taken him no time at all to settle in. It’s made a big difference to United that he feels so at home and is scoring so many goals.”

Valencia also made a point of highlighting the example set by veteran winger Ryan Giggs. “I work hard every day to grow and improve as a player," he said. Tricolor targets
Though still seemingly some way off, given the frenetic finish to the club season ahead, Valencia will have one eye on his next major tournament in Ecuador colours: the Copa America: “It’ll be an important test with a view to Brazil 2014 qualifying.

"We’re starting a new era under coach Reinaldo Rueda, who is introducing a new playing system, which we’re getting used to. In Argentina the favourites will be the usual suspects: the host nation and Brazil. But let’s hope Ecuador can be challengers too. It’d be nice if a different national side could lift the trophy.”

However, La Tricolor face a daunting task from the off on Argentinian soil, having been drawn alongside two teams that featured at the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa™. “All the groups are always difficult in South America," Valencia explained.

"But it seems like this time Ecuador have been handed the trickiest [group], which features Paraguay and Brazil. We won’t be taking Venezuela lightly either, as they’ve been making a lot of progress. It’s a tough section but we’ve been working well recently and we’ve still got two months ahead in which to prepare.”

Mention of La Albirroja and A Seleção, who both made the last eight at South Africa 2010, causes Valencia to wonder what might have been. “It’s a bit annoying not to have qualified when you’ve been there before," he said. "It’s also hard watching the other teams that qualified ahead of you, but that’s football. That was an extra motivation in my career, to help keep me working hard and chasing more success. But I don’t pay it too much heed anymore, because I’m more focused on what’s ahead of me.”

So, does Valencia feel he has now made the journey from promising youngster to established national-team star? “No, I’m not a star," he stated. "But I am seen as an example to follow because I’m at a big club. I just work for the good of the group, to help the national side keep moving forward.

“I really hope we qualify for Brazil [2014]. My dream is to win a lot of titles with United, win a Copa America with Ecuador and make a splash at a World Cup to give my country plenty to cheer about.”

United’s players have been queuing up to pay tribute to Antonio Valencia, who has looked remarkably sharp on his return to the side. The Ecuadorian tells United Review there's still more to come...

How have you enjoyed being back playing?
It’s a great source of pleasure after all the time I’d been out. Training with the lads, playing again and being involved in different competitions with the team at an exciting time of the season – it doesn’t get better than that. I’m back at nearly 100%, happy to be involved again and hope to help us win some silverware.

Was it difficult to keep your spirits up while you were out injured, and were you ever worried about coming back?
All injuries make you feel a little bit down at first, but luckily I had the support of my family and my daughter, the fans and all the people around me, so it was easy to keep my spirits up. I was just determined to recover and that was always at the forefront of my mind. The physio assured me early on that I was going to make a complete recovery, which gave me a lot of heart and confidence.

Have you been surprised by how well you've played since your return?
My comeback has gone pretty well considering how bad the injury was, and how long the recovery process was. But I think I still need to work on a few areas before they are back to how they were: I need to improve my speed, strength and muscle mass. But I guess it’s not going so bad now I’ve been back a couple of months!

Wayne Rooney says he's pleased you're back – do you enjoy playing with him?
Of course – who wouldn’t? We enjoyed some success playing together last season but, more than that, he’s an inspirational leader for the side, a team player who gives everything for the cause.

Was it nice to get a goal against Fulham?
Yeah, it’s always good to score a goal, and especially so after a long period out of action. It was a small moment of relief for me, a milestone in my recovery, but my main aim was on getting back to playing and helping the team, so that’s what I was focusing on at that time.

What's your favourite goal for United so far?
I couldn’t choose a favourite goal – I’ve honestly enjoyed them all. But I’d love to score an important goal for United, in a final or another game that really matters. I suppose I’d like to score a few more in general, but I actually prefer laying goals on for my team-mates. That’s my main job and I enjoy it.

Nemanja says you’re someone everyone can look up to. How does that make you feel, coming from your skipper?
They’re nice words, but there are a lot of players to look up to at this club: Vidic himself, Giggs, Scholes and Rooney – these are all guys to admire and learn from. There’s a high level of professionalism at this club and it can only improve you as a player.

There's a busy schedule ahead, but having been out for so long, do you feel fit and ready to go in every game?
I think so! I’ve played in a handful of games now since my return and believe I’ve performed quite well. I’ve suffered no ill-effects from the injury and feel stronger with every game, so if the manager shows faith in me then I will do my best for the team.

What have you made of Chicharito and Dimitar Berbatov this season?
They’re both great guys, so it’s a privilege to share a changing room and also to be on the same pitch as them. They’ve enjoyed superb seasons, scoring plenty of goals between them and, at the moment, you’d have to say they’re two of the best strikers in the world.

So who would get your vote as United’s player of the year?
That’s a difficult one because there are so many players who’ve played prominent roles in what has been an enjoyable and successful season so far. All the guys have given everything so I wouldn’t like to single one out.

What would a Premier League winners' medal mean to you?
It would be brilliant to win the league, not just for me but for the Ecuadorian people who follow Manchester United as well as Antonio Valencia. On a personal level, it would be the perfect way to cap my recovery from injury to lift the title for the first time, so it’s something I’ve set my sights on.

If you could take one attribute from any of your team-mates, what would it be?
It’d have to be Ryan Giggs’ technique. He’s a phenomenal player with such grace and ease on the ball, and it’s remarkable that he’s maintained such a high level of technical ability throughout his long career.

Valencia Segera Dapat Kontrak Baru

Manchester - Winger Manchester United Antonio Valencia telah tampil impresif sejak kembali dari cedera. Maka tak heran jika sang klub siap memberi dia sebuah kontrak baru kendati kontraknya baru akan habis dua tahun lagi.

Usai melalui musim pertamanya dengan sukses, Valencia yang diboyong dari Wigan Athletic pada 2009 harus menepi lama akibat cedera di musim ini. Setelah pulih pemain Ekuador berusia 25 tahun itu tidak butuh waktu lama untuk menemukan kembali bentuk permainannya.

Penampilan Valencia dikabarkan menarik perhatian klub-klub raksasa seperti Barcelona, Real Madrid, Inter Milan dan AC Milan.

Akan tetapi MU tentu saja tidak ingin kehilangan Valencia. Menurut laporan The Sun, manajemen The Red Devils tengah melakukan pembicaraan dengan sang pemain untuk membicarakan kontrak baru dengan nilai yang disebut-sebut cukup besar.

"Valencia sudah tampil brilian sejak kembali dari cedera dan United ingin memberinya kontrak baru," ujar seorang sumber dalam MU.

"Tapi ada banyak klub lain yang menunjukkan minatnya (terhadap Valencia) dan dia tahu dia berada di dalam kondisi sehat.

MANCHESTER – Antonio Valencia yang bermain apik brsama Manchester United musim ini, akan segera dipanggil negaranya, Ekuador menjelang Copa America 2011.

Federasi Sepakbola Ekuador akan tetap memanggil winger kelahiran Lago Agrio tersebut, meskipun nantinya keikutsertaannya akan ditentang United. Padahal, Presiden Ekuador, Luis Chiriboga menghimbau para pemain yang dipanggil masuk tim nasional harus sudah melapor pada Federasi, 15 hari sebelum pembukaan Copa, seperti lansiran yang dirilis Supersport.com, Kamis (12/5/2011).

Chiriboga juga ,menyatakan, bahwa setiap pemain yang dipanggil harus datang mewakili Ekuador, karena Copa America merupakan salah satu turnamen yang masuk dalam jadwal acara FIFA.

Namun setelah pembicaraan antara utusan Federasi Ekuador dan manajemen United, Valencia diperbolehkan membela negaranya.

Namun diizinkannya Valencia, hanya berlaku untuk putaran final kejuaraan itu. Valencia tidak akan turun berlaga dalam dua pertandingan persahabatan, pada 28 Mei dan 1 Juni menghadapi Mexico dan Kanada. Karena Valencia masih dibutuhkan United dalam partai final Liga Champions di Wembley akhir bulan ini kontra Barcelona. (msy)

Manchester United winger Antonio Valencia has insisted he does not feel threatened by the £16 million arrival of Ashley Young.

Young signed a five-year deal with United on Thursday afternoon, agreeing a £120,000-a-week contract.

It means competition for places in the United squad will be fierce, especially on the flanks, with Young going head-to-head with Valencia and Nani.

"I heard about this on the news - I do not fear his arrival," Young said.

"The season is long, and under Alex Ferguson everyone will get their chance in United's key matches.

"Ashley is a good footballer and I believe that he will help us towards even more success next season.

"As for myself, I have two seasons left at United and I am convinced I will fulfil those. And maybe a few more years, too."

Nani has been linked with a move to Inter Milan, potentially as part of a player-plus-cash deal for Wesley Sneijder, while Valencia is reportedly a target for Real Madrid and Juventus.

However, the Ecuador international said: "There are rumours about other clubs but I have no news about that. I am focused on the Copa America and performing with Ecuador.

"I have recovered from the injury problems of last season."

Valencia injures ankle

Antonio Valencia limped out of Ecuador’s opening Copa America game against Paraguay on Sunday.

The Reds winger suffered a sprained left ankle (the same one he seriously injured last season) and was forced off at half-time in a match that ended 0-0 despite featuring plenty of goalmouth action.

Ecuador manager Reinaldo Rueda felt his players had come in for some rough treatment and called for greater protection from referees.

"The referees must take care of this situation because it [the injury] happened in the first half and [Antonio] was no longer the same," Rueda said. "He could not stand or walk on it and we had to make a change.

“It's a shame because we all know the process he went through to be here.”

Valencia, who missed almost six months of the 2010/11 campaign with an ankle injury sustained in September, is now a doubt for Ecuador’s next Copa America fixture, against Venezuela on Saturday 9 July.

Antonio Valencia has returned to Manchester to recuperate after his Copa America was cut short after just 45 minutes.

The winger picked up an ankle injury in Ecuador's first game against Paraguay, although was expected to return for El Tricolor's third group-stage game.

The knock has proved more troublesome, however, and Sir Alex revealed Valencia has left the Ecuador's Argentina base to continue treatment at United's training complex.

“Antonio's gone back to Manchester,” he said. “He got an injury playing in the first game for Ecuador so he's back in Manchester.

"It's nothing serious but he wasn't going to be taking part in the rest of the Copa America, so there's no point in him coming out here [to the USA to join us on the pre-season tour] if he's injured. We've got the facilities back at Carrington – that's the best place for him.”

Antonio Valencia will sign a new long-term contract at Old Trafford next week, chief executive David Gill confirmed.

The Ecuador winger is only halfway through the four-year deal he signed when joining from Wigan for £16million in 2009, but the 25-year-old has agreed new terms in the region of £80,000-a-week.

Gill said: 'We're in the process of finalising that. He's been to the Copa America and we've been away but that will be sorted out next week. It's a long-term contract.'

Gill also revealed that United are looking at offering Javier Hernandez improved terms to reward him for an outstanding first season at Old Trafford.

Even though the Mexico striker signed a five-year contract when Sir Alex Ferguson bought him from Chivas Guadalajara for £7m last summer.

The United chief said: 'Hernandez came on a five-year deal, as did Chris Smalling. We did Chris because there was a re-negotiation clause in his contract, which we would have done anyway, if he met a certain number of appearances.

'There's no such clause in Javier's contract. Having said that, we intend to address it. But we want to address it when there is no pressure with regards to that issue, so we intend to do it in the autumn.'

Less clear is Dimitar Berbatov's future at Old Trafford. The Bulgarian striker signed a four year deal when he moved from Tottenham for £30.75m in 2008.

And even though United have the option to extend it by another year, the club's relaxed attitude to the situation and Ferguson's decision to leave him out of his squad for the Champions League Final in May, has placed a question mark over whether the English champions will exercise that option.

'He's not in the final year of his contract. People keep telling me that but there is an option to extend Dimitar's contract by another year, on the club's side.

'We can do it whenever we want to do it. There are no conditions around it. Everyone has been talking about Berbatov from the outside, saying he wants to leave or that we want want him to leave, but we don't want him to go. We want him to stay.

'He scored over 20 goals last season, so there is no desire on our behalf to see him go. From our perspective he has, effectively, two years to go.

'There's no point in extending that option. We have until the end of the season, so we can assess how it goes, talk to him, see how he performs and see what happens.

'I've not had one conversation with Dimitar (about his future). There has been no correspondence in that respect.

'The decision Alex took was a decision he took for that particular game. It wasn't a decision taken with a view that we want Dimitar to go, because we don't.'

The Ecuadorian left the DW Stadium in the summer of 2009 in order to move to Old Trafford, but still keeps an eye out for the fortunes of the Latics, who brought him to England from Spain's Villarreal.

"They'll always have a special place in my heart," Antonio told United Review. "I came here from abroad and I was taken in as one of the family from the first day.

"It was a real special group of players that we had in those few seasons there, and it was great to be a part of. I have only have gratitude and fond memories of my time there. I still speak regularly with Maynor Figueroa, who is a close friend of mine.

"I do look out for their scores. I know at the minute they’re by no means out of danger, but they’re working hard and they’ve picked up some decent results recently and let’s hope they can get up there and be fighting for ninth or tenth place."

However, Valencia scored in his only previous Old Trafford meeting with his former employers in 2010, and recognises that there is no room for sentiment as United bid to retain the Barclays Premier League title.

"Of course not," he said. "We’re professionals and we know that all that goes out of the window and the result is the main thing. The main thing is that United keep on picking up points and building momentum."

Di partai terakhir MU kontra Wigan, Senin (26/12/2011), Valencia memulai pertandingan sebagai full-back. Ini bukanlah kali pertama ia bermain di sektor itu.

The Ecuadorian, who has been playing at right-back in recent weeks, returned to his natural position on the right side of midfield to put in an excellent performance against Trotters defender Sam Ricketts.

"I think he ate a motor," Evra joked to the club’s official website. "He was unbelievable.

"I don't know the left-back of Bolton, but I'm sure he had muscle problems after the game. Antonio's so powerful.

The Ecuadorian, who has been playing at right-back in recent weeks, returned to his natural position on the right side of midfield to put in an excellent performance against Trotters defender Sam Ricketts.

"I think he ate a motor," Evra joked to the club’s official website. "He was unbelievable.

"I don't know the left-back of Bolton, but I'm sure he had muscle problems after the game. Antonio's so powerful.

"It's just great to see Antonio back [on the wing] and in great form."

Midfielder Michael Carrick also had praise for the winger, insisting opposition full-backs must find it difficult to defend against him.

He said: "He's really on his game at the moment, and has been for a good number of matches. We just keep giving him the ball and he carries it up the pitch and creates opportunities for us. It’s great to see him playing like that and it must be horrible to play against."

Wayne Rooney has hailed Antonio Valencia's return to top form.
Valencia had endured a difficult start to the campaign, missing the entire pre-season and the first month of competitive action after suffering an ankle injury during the Copa America.

The winger then ended up playing right-back to cover for Manchester United's defensive injury problems.

However, ahead of Sunday's crucial trip to Arsenal, the 26-year-old is hitting the mark again. And Rooney is delighted.

'Antonio has been playing brilliantly,' said the United striker. 'He is back to his best and when he is like that he is so difficult to defend against.
'It is great for the forwards because he is so good at delivering the ball into the box quickly.'

Valencia's contribution helped United make a speedy return to winning ways after their unexpected setbacks against Blackburn and Newcastle over Christmas.

Before that, the Red Devils had been breathing heavily down the necks of leaders Manchester City after recovering from the 6-1 derby defeat by taking 25 points from a possible 27.

They are now in the tricky position of playing catch-up, right at the start of a run of fixtures that sees them tackle four major rivals in their next six league games, in addition to next weekend's FA Cup fourth round clash with Liverpool.

Even Sir Alex Ferguson concedes it will be the period that will define United's season. And Rooney is just glad the Red Devils have thrown off the mid-season shackles attached to prevent a repeat of their derby debacle.

'The chances are coming again now,' he said. 'Those games when we were winning 1-0 were really important. We had to defend and be solid as a team.
'Now we are starting to score a few more goals again.'

Injuries are starting to ease too. Chris Smalling and Phil Jones are due to return for the Arsenal encounter, whilst Tom Cleverley and Ashley Young should be back in a matter of weeks from their long-term problems.

The returns are being welcomed, as is news of a potential bid for Crystal Palace's England Under 21 full-back Nathanial Clyne, who is out of contract in the summer, because Nemanja Vidic and Darren Fletcher have both been ruled out for the season. But Smalling concedes the constant changing has been disruptive.

'Nobody could have foreseen all the injuries we have had,' said the England defender. 'At the start of the season we had good numbers and good quality.

'With so many injuries, the form was bound to dip once or twice. But we are all pulling together and there have been plenty of good results.'
It is the bad ones that attract the attention though. Should United suffer their fourth defeat of the season this weekend and find themselves six points adrift of Manchester City, who take on Tottenham a couple of hours earlier, the critics will be out again.

Such criticism is a new experience for Smalling, who won a Premier League winners' medal in his first season with the Old Trafford outfit.
However, he understands the demands of playing for such a huge club and the reaction that comes with failure.

'I can understand the criticism because we are behind City in the league, and the expectations of this club - from both inside and out - are massive,' he said. 'If we are not on top, everyone is asking why, and rightly so.
'Finishing second with more points that we collected last season won't make us feel any better about ourselves. The only objective is to win the league.'

"Memang ini sebuah kerugian yang sangat besar. Apalagi, permainan Valencia pada musim ini sangat fantastis buat kami," demikian pendapat Ferdinand kepada situs resmi United, Sabtu (18/2/2012), mengenai cedera Valencia.

"Namun, ketika seorang pemain mendapatkan cedera atau penampilannya sedikit menurun, sang pelatih selalu bisa memainkan pemain lain yang sedang dalam performa terbaik," tandas bek 33 tahun tersebut.

Ferdinand memang bukan tanpa alasan berkata seperti itu. Sebab, banyak pemain United yang bisa bermain di posisi sayap. Mereka adalah Park Ji-Sung, Ryan Giggs dan juga Luis Nani, yang baru sembuh dari cedera.

Manchester - Pemain sayap Manchester United, Antonio Valencia, mengaku sempat khawatir dirinya mengalami cedera parah. Tapi, dia lega karena cuma harus beristirahat selama sebulan.

Valencia tak bisa menyelesaikan pertandingan saat MU bertemu Ajax Amsterdam di Liga Europa, Jumat (17/2/2012) dinihari WIB. Hamstring winger asal Ekuador ini bermasalah dan dia terpaksa ditarik keluar.

Cedera itu sempat membuat Valencia takut. Maklum, dia pernah cedera parah pada musim lalu saat engkelnya retak dan ligamennya mengalami kerusakan.

"Setelah pengalaman cedera terakhir saya, saya mengkhawatorkan yang terburuk," aku Valencia kepada The Sun.

Namun, hasil pemeriksaan membuat Valencia lega. Cederanya ternyata tak terlalu parah.

"Saya sedih, tapi setelah tes staf medis menginformasikan bahwa saya mengalami masalah otot di hamstring. Itu penting tapi tidak parah. Saya akan kembali dalam sebulan," kata Valencia.

"Saya marah karena ini terjadi di momen kunci seperti ini. Saya sudah berkembang dan memainkan sejumlah pertandingan yang bagus dan ini adalah konsekuensi terburuk dari semua itu," tambah eks pemain Wigan Athletic ini.

"Tapi, sekarang dokter sudah menenangkan saya dan saya harus memulihkan diri dan kemudian membantu tim dalam perebutan titel Premier League dan Liga Europa," tandasnya.

Manchester - Kabar baik datang dari Antonio Valencia. Awalnya winger Manchester United itu diperkirakan akan absen selama sebulan namun Sir Alex Ferguson mengatakan bahwa pemainnya itu bisa kembali lebih cepat.

Valencia menderita cedera hamstring di leg pertama Liga Europa melawan Ajax usai tampil sebagai pemain pengganti dalam laga yang dimenangkan oleh MU 2-0 itu.

Sesungguhnya Valencia diperkrakan akan absen paling tidak empat pekan, tapi pemain berusia 26 tahun ini tampaknya bisa kembali beraksi lebih awal.

Ferguson optimistis pemain internasional Ekuador itu akan siap untuk masuk skuad 'Setan Merah' di laga tandang melawan Tottenham Hotspur pada 4 Maret mendatang.

"Adanya Ashley Young dan Nani sebagai pemain sayap natural akan memperkuat penyerangan kami," tulis manajer MU ini dalam program pertandingan resmi saat menghadapi Ajax di leg kedua yang dikutip Sky Sports.

Antonio Valencia is to ask Manchester United for permission to postpone an end-of-season ankle operation in an effort to boost Ecuador’s World Cup qualification hopes.

The 26-year-old winger, who scored one goal and created another for Ashley Young during United’s 2-0 victory at Blackburn on Monday evening, is due to undergo surgery to remove a metal plate in his left ankle, which suffered a double fracture during a Champions League clash against Rangers at Old Trafford in September 2010.

United's medical team had planned for Valencia to undergo the procedure following the final game of the season against Sunderland next month.
But with Ecuador due to play Argentina on June 2, followed by another World Cup qualifier against Colombia seven days later, the former Wigan player is keen to delay surgery to represent his country.
Ecuador coach Reinaldo Rueda said: “I raised this situation with Antonio in January and we agreed to wait and see how things evolved.
“I spoke to Antonio before the game against Blackburn and the most important issue is his physical situation, but we hope that they [United] are happy not to get involved.

“Hopefully, the plate will not disturb Antonio and everything will continue to be good over the final month of the season so that he can be with us for the World Cup qualifiers.”

He said the performances of Valencia for United “are very important for Ecuadorean football and we hope we can enjoy that with the international team too”.
An injury to the same ankle, sustained while playing for Ecuador at the Copa America last summer, forced the £18 million signing to miss the opening the month of this season.
And with Valencia potentially delaying surgery for a month, the issue for United will be whether he will have recovered from the operation in time to begin pre-season training in early July.

Valencia’s form for United in recent weeks since returning from a hamstring injury has seen him emerge as a key figure in the club’s surge to the top of the Premier League and, with Nani still short of match fitness following a foot injury, he is set to remain in the starting line-up for Sunday’s Old Trafford clash with Queens Park Rangers.
Rio Ferdinand warned his team-mates not to think the title is already destined to go to United.

“There is still a lot of football to be played between now and the end of the season, when the trophies are handed out,” he said.
“We have to make sure we apply ourselves in the right way for every game. We know it can change very quickly as well, from being on a great run to having a dip. We have been there before.
Meanwhile, United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has confirmed he will send a full-strength squad to Belfast for a testimonial for former goalkeeper and Munich survivor Harry Gregg at Windsor Park on May 15, two days after the final game of the season.

Ashley Young reckons his Manchester United team-mate Antonio Valencia is the best winger in the league.

The Ecuadorian, who has come back strongly after a serious ankly injury sustained in 2010, has been a key part of the Reds' title drive this season.

And Young, speaking to www.manutd.com, said: "I don’t think there’s been a better winger this season. He’s like a steam train when he’s running at defenders. He’s so strong and his delivery is brilliant. His goal at Blackburn typified the kind of form he’s been in week-in, week-out since he came back."

Wingers have traditionally been a key part of United's football philosphy and Young reckons the club has a strong selection to pick from at present.

He said: "To have that competition for places is great for the team although it creates a bit of a headache for the manager! When you’ve got Giggsy, Antonio, Nani and Ji around, you know you need to be on your toes, training well and, when you get your chance, delivering for the team."
