Republic of Ireland international Darron Gibson is an athletic midfielder who packs a powerful shot.

'Gibbo' has been in and around the first team for several seasons but it was in the 2008/09 campaign that he made a real breakthrough.

He scored his first goal for the seniors in the FA Cup win at Southampton in January 2009 and also played every game of the Reds' triumphant Carling Cup campaign, in which his composure and passing ability drew comparisons with Michael Carrick.

He was rewarded with a three-year contract extension in July 2009 and will be pushing for regular first-team involvement in the coming seasons.

Darron made his first-team debut the day after his 18th birthday, as a second-half substitute in the Carling Cup victory over Barnet in October 2005.

Gibson was a regular fixture in United's reserves that season (2005/06), making 19 appearances and scoring two goals in a campaign that yielded three trophies.

Darron's development was furthered in 2006/07 by a loan spell at Royal Antwerp. Although initially hampered by a knee injury, the midfielder made a big impact in Belgium, helping Antwerp almost to gain promotion.

Promotion to the top flight was also the target for Gibson's next loan period, this time in England with Wolves. The Irish midfielder joined Mick McCarthy's team in October 2007 and stayed for six months, making 24 appearances and scoring one goal, although Wolves just missed out on the play-offs.

Derry-born Gibson represented Northern Ireland at youth level but subsequently opted to play for the Republic of Ireland, making his international debut in August 2007, and is now a regular for his country.

Sir Alex Ferguson is targeting top spot in Group B, but not at the expense of taking the opportunity to give European experience to some of his brightest young talents - with Darron Gibson set to be the main beneficiary.

Gibson is set for a rare starting spot in the centre of midfield, while Gabriel Obertan and Rafael are also almost certain starters when Besiktas visit Old Trafford on Wednesday. The Reds boss even refused to rule out starting Danny Welbeck and Federico Macheda up front.

“I’ve not made my mind up about that yet,” said the boss. “Against Wolfsburg we’ll be playing some of the younger players. But what the formation and the team is on Wednesday we’ve not decided yet.

“Gibson will definitely play, and young Rafa as well. It’s a great challenge for these players. We’re also thinking of starting Gabriel Obertan to see how he does.

“And we’re looking at Ji-sung Park’s fitness because he’s back and has trained very well. We’ve put him on a programme that has brought him to his best level. He played for South Korea last week so he's ready for a game.”

Gibson is very highly rated at Carrington, although the 22-year-old Irishman has been limited to just one start all season. But Sir Alex is keen to push him on to the next stage - challenging regularly for a place in the Reds' engine room.

"He’s not had the amount of football that he'd wish for," said the boss. "I wish I'd been able to give him more games, but he has a lot of competition from Carrick, Anderson, Scholes, Fletcher, and Giggs if I choose to play him there.

"But, credit to Darron, he’s never let it unsettle him. His training performances have been excellent. Every session he comes in knowing that it’s worthwhile. He has a purpose about his training. For quite a few weeks we’ve been saying, you can’t hold a young one back. They tell you that themselves. And I think Darron is approaching that. He has become a very good, powerful midfield player."

For Sir Alex, Wednesday’s Champions League fixture is a balance between doing the job to win the group and an element of experimentation.

“This is a good fixture,” he said. “I can try one or two things. We did in the last game and we were far too open. But it ended up being a fantastic game.

"In the situation we’re in we could have an absolute non-event if we wanted to. But it’s not the way we want it. We want an exciting game and we'll do our best to challenge the younger players that will play.

“It’s difficult to say whether it’s more important to finish first or second in the group stages these days. But we will try to win it because that’s the best thing to do. You always want to finish first.

“We’ve analysed Besiktas and their form has been transformed in the last six matches. They’ve won them all, beating the top-of-the-league team Fenerbahce 3-0 on Saturday. So they’re in very good form and we will need to deal with that.”

Manchester United midfielder Darron Gibson was left disappointed after their Champions League defeat to Besiktas.

United suffered defeat in Europe for the first time in 24 games, despite dominating possession for much of the match.

“I think we played well in the first half,” Gibson told MUTV. “We deserved to score but we were a bit unlucky.

“Kiko [Macheda] and Danny [Welbeck] played well up front but we needed to take our chances.”

Wednesday’s result now means Sir Alex Ferguson’s men need a win or a draw to guarantee top spot when United travel to Wolfsburg next month.

“It’s very important to finish top because you get to play your second leg away from home in the next round,” Gibson said. “But I think we’ll be all right at Wolfsburg. If we go there and play well then we’ll win.”

So you will never win anything with kids, will you? Sir Alex Ferguson resurrected his favourite Alan Hansen line as a defence of his policy of giving his young players much-needed experience in the Champions League and now the Carling Cup and was rewarded when an unlikely member of his junior cast came of age against Tottenham.

At 22 Darron Gibson is far from the youngest of Fergie's latest fledglings, yet he would not have been top of many people's list to repay his manager's faith after his wayward performance last week. Two stunning first-half goals and a tidy shift giving Wilson Palacios and Jermaine Jenas the runaround in midfield amounted to the quickest of turnarounds to give his manager fresh ammunition against the doubters. If Gabriel Obertan was supposed to show he has the potential to become the new Cristiano Ronaldo, he failed. Danny Welbeck had a quiet game and Federico Macheda did not start. It was left to Gibson, who played in last year's Carling Cup final against Spurs but attracted most of the flak last week, to present himself as the new Paul Scholes. Anyone disputing this claim should view not just the immaculate twin strikes from outside the box but the tackle for which he was booked at the end when he dived in on Aaron Lennon without any realistic chance of winning the ball.

"Sometimes you have bad days, today was a good day," Gibson said, modestly. "We tried not to let the criticism affect us. We just played our normal game." His captain attempted to introduce some perspective. "They are not kids, for a start," Gary Neville said. "They are experienced players and they are in the team by right. Some of the criticism is unfair at times but that's just playing for Manchester United. Lose a game and that's what happens."

This was never quite the reserve game that had been promised. Ferguson made a great show of sticking with the kids, arguing that all they needed was experience and a little more composure in front of goal, yet he added Dimitar Berbatov to ensure Manchester United would not be lacking in that department as well as to give him match time after injury. Harry Redknapp, for all his talk about preferring a top-four finish to a day out at Wembley, eventually rested only Niko Kranjcar and Benoît Assou-Ekotto from Saturday's starting line-up. Tom Huddlestone, Peter Crouch and Vedran Corluka were named as substitutes and incoming players of the calibre of Jenas, Robbie Keane and Gareth Bale hardly counted as fringe performers.

Perhaps for that reason Spurs initially looked the slicker going forward. Lennon on the left wing was soon causing problems for Neville and a neat move down the right, when Palacios won the ball and David Bentley carried it into the area, deserved a better finish than the shotfrom Jenas that ended halfway up the Stretford End.

Gibson had spent much of his last outing peppering his home crowd with the same sort of hit-and-hope efforts, yet after 16 minutes of Spurs doing most of the attacking Ferguson's law of patience and perseverance came into play. When Anderson's breakaway down the left was checked he squared the ball inside to see who was keeping up with play. Gibson was and, despite last week's blows to his confidence, he was only ever going to hit it. The ball stayed low and true and Heurelho Gomes was beaten from 25 yards.

Confidence breeds confidence and United never seemed likely to look back after that, even though a timely block by Ritchie de Laet was needed to prevent Jermain Defoe putting his side swiftly back on terms.

Gibson scored his second seven minutes before the interval with an even more impressive finish from a similar distance. This time Berbatov and Welbeck did the setting up, though the message was the same. United have found a successor to Scholes in the art of thumping goals home from just outside the "D". Put the ball into the right area and Gibson's right foot is a hammer.

Considering Spurs had virtually a full team on show, this performance was well below the standard of their recent league form. Redknapp had better be serious about that top-four finish.

Jakarta - Pujian dilontarkan manajer Manchester United Sir Alex Ferguson kepada Darron Gibson. Sir Alex menyebut pemain yang menjadi penentu langkah MU ke semifinal Piala Carling ini sebagai fantastis.

Darron Gibson was delighted with his brace for Manchester United last night.

The Irish midfielder hit both goals in the Carling Cup quarterfinal victory over Tottenham.

“We’ve been working in training all week on getting shots off in and around the box and it worked tonight with the two goals”, Gibson told MUTV.

“For the second, Berba got in on the left and passed it to me. I played a one-two with Welbeck and stroked it in. I didn’t try to hit it hard, I just placed it and luckily it went in.”

The Irish midfielder was pleased with his overall performance, but feels there is still room for improvement.

“I think I played quite well. I gave the ball away a few times so I could have done better in that sense,” he admitted.

“We knew Spurs were going to play a strong team because it’s one of the few competitions they can win this year but we knew if we played well we could get a result.

“They are established Barclays Premier League players and I think there was pressure on the youngsters to prove we are good enough to play at their level.

“I think we showed we’re capable of doing that and overall we deserved the win.”

TWO-goal hero Darron Gibson insisted Manchester United’s youngsters did not have anything to prove when they took to the field against Tottenham.

The second string came in for criticism after a Champions League defeat by Besiktas last week but manager Sir Alex Ferguson kept faith with them for the Carling Cup tie.

And it paid off as Gibson netted twice in a 2-0 success over Spurs at Old Trafford.

The Irishman told Sky Sports: “It was a good team performance following last week. We bounced back and the young lads did well.

“We didn’t go out to try and prove anything. Sometimes you have bad days and today was a good day.”

Ferguson praised Gibson’s performance and revealed the youngsters will get another chance in the semi-finals.

“He did well,” said the Scotsman. “The second goal particularly, the movement and working off the ball was good and a terrific finish.

“Gibson and Anderson did very well in the middle of the park. We’re two games away from Wembley, that’s good. We’ll enjoy the semi-final and these lads will play again.”

Gary Neville, meanwhile, believes the next generation are getting their chance on merit.

“Gibbo scored two great goals and that makes it routine for you,” he said. “They’re playing for their countries and they deserve their place. They can hold their own. They’re quality.”

MANCHESTER - Darron Gibson mengungkapkan kegagalan pemain muda Manchester United bersinar belakangan ini. Menurutnya, harapan yang berlebihan membuat pemain muda Red Devils tertekan. Benarkah?

Seperti diberitakan sebelumnya, United menurunkan sejumlah pemain muda dalam Piala Carling. Hasilnya, tim besutan Sir Alex Ferguson itu berhasil menang dengan skor 2-0 atas Tottenham Hotspur.

Pemain muda Gibson menjadi penyumbang dua gol pada laga perempatfinal tersebut. Kemenangan itu membungkam kritikan manajemen kepada pemain muda Red Devils saat ini.

"Saya harus mengakui tekanan kepada kami sangat besar," kata Gibson dikutip Press Association Sport, Rabu (3/12/2009). "Itu menurut yang saya rasakan, bahkan dengan tim yang kami miliki di lapangan."

Gibson memiliki harapan besar kepada Ferguson. Pemain asal Rep. Irlandia itu berharap pelatih asal Skotlandia itu tetap memberikan kesempatan supaya bisa tampil mengesankan di babak semifinal nanti.

"Piala Liga merupakan kompetisi buat pemain muda. Saya berharap Ferguson tetap mempertahankan tradisi ini dan memberikan kesempatan kepada kami untuk berlaga di semifinal," tegas gelandang 22 tahun itu.

"Kami sudah bekerja keras sepanjang pekan dan berlatih menembak dari kotak penalti. Upaya kami ini terbayar dengan dua gol yang tercipta," tandas pemain yang sempat dipinjamkan ke Wolverhampton Wanderers itu.

Alex Ferguson played four of his promising youngsters in the quarter-final against Tottenham on Tuesday night.

And they made light work of Harry Redknapp's expensively-assembled team.

Midfielder Gibson, 22, stood out with two long-range strikes deciding the tie 2-0.

And the Republic of Ireland international said: "It was a challenge for us to play against a team that is established and playing in the Premier League every week.

"There was pressure on the youngsters to prove we are good enough to play at their level.

"We showed we are capable of playing in the Premier League because overall we deserved the win.

"There are some big teams left in the competition - but I don't see why we can't go and win it again."

DARRON Gibson must now take the Darren Fletcher route to a regular United berth after his two-goal Carling Cup success.

The Republic of Ireland midfielder was the long- distance hero of the Reds' quarter-final victory against Spurs on Tuesday.

And former Republic and United striker Frank Stapleton believes the 22-year-old has the perfect example at United to fire his ambition.

"Darron cannot afford to stand still now or go backwards. He's got good potential and he has given himself a good chance," Frank told M.E.N. Sport.

"He's got ability, there is no doubt about that. But the question has been when is he going to make that step up and compete with the likes of Darren Fletcher, Michael Carrick and Paul Scholes in United's midfield. Fletcher is a great illustration of someone who made that step up to another level.

"He used to be in a similar position to Darron when he was around the same age. He was considered one of the fringe players who got games in the domestic cup competitions.

"But Fletcher has taken the challenge by the scruff of the neck and is now one of the best midfield players in the country.

"Gibson has to start thinking the same way. The penny has to drop with him and he has to improve to a level where he is considered for Premier League and Champions League matches.

"He did his case no harm whatsoever against Tottenham on Tuesday night but that cannot be it. Does he want to be one of those only considered really for the Carling Cup or FA Cup, or does he want to be consistently in the running and selected for the league and Europe?

"There should be no going back for him now. He has set a standard with his overall play and goals against Spurs.

"After losing Cristiano Ronaldo's goals much has been said about more coming from midfield and he has proved he has it as a weapon. He's got to build on it.

"As a one-off match he has to be delighted with his performance. But the next question is can he force the manager to consider him ever week and can he do it regularly in the Premier League.

"I am sure he has the ambition and it is within his capabilities.

"He now has to make the manager sit up and take notice."

From his crisp strike at Southampton in the FA Cup third round last January that gave him his first senior goal, to his 20-yard volley at Derby County, his sensational long-range screamer at Hull on the final day of the season, to his two brilliant finishes against Spurs, Gibson has proved that he has an eye-catching technique for ball- striking.

Shooting skill

"It is something of a lost art but Darron is reviving it," added Stapleton.

"He can strike a ball well and can hit it hard. It's a mixture of craft, control, placement and blockbusting power. It is a terrific weapon. Not many have that ability.

"But that is not all Darron has got. He's also a prompter in midfield as well.

"He's got to be encouraged by what he did against Spurs and now look to build on it."

Gibson, who was born in Derry but invoked the Good Friday Agreement to pursue his preference to play for the Republic of Ireland, should have more opportunities in the weeks to come to press his claim for a regular first-team berth.

Next week's Champions League trip to Wolfsburg is an obvious one, while Ferguson has already pledged to stick with Tuesday night's squad for the two-legged semi-final next month.

But once the Carling Cup campaign is over, Ferguson will have limited scope for experiment until the destination of this season's title is determined.

Little wonder, therefore, Gibson is putting everything into his work on the training ground, especially in the shooting department.

"We have been working all week in training on quick play and getting shots off around the box," he revealed.

"It paid off with those two goals."

Gibson hails strong squad

United may be losing players left, right and centre, but Darron Gibson praised the strength of the Reds' squad after Saturday's 4-0 win over West Ham.

Sir Alex had defensive selection problems before the game, with Rio Ferdinand, Nemanja Vidic, Jonny Evans, John O'Shea, Fabio and Rafael all unavaliable. By the time the final whistle sounded, Gary Neville and Wes Brown had joined the walking wounded.

It meant United began the match with Darren Fletcher at right back... and ended it with Michael Carrick and Evra in the heart of defence, with Ryan Giggs on the left.

"It was a massive win for us and shows how good our squad is," Gibson told MUTV. "We have players who can step in and do a good job. I’ve not seen Michael play at centre half before... and Fletch was playing out of position too."

Gibson netted his third goal of the week (and United's second at Upton Park) with a stunning strike from outside the box.

"I was buzzing after the Spurs game on Tuesday and ready to play again. It was a massive boost for me [to start against West Ham]. My two goals during the week got my confidence up and the gaffer’s stuck with me, which is great.

"For my goal, Patrice gave me the ball, I gave it to Giggsy… the manager and Mick Phelan had been telling me and Anderson to get forward so I ran forward and Giggsy gave me the ball back and I just stroked it home. I think it was better than the goals against Spurs. It was a better celebration so I’m happy with that!

"Overall, we’re very happy with the performance and I think we're starting to hit our stride. Hopefully we can kick on from here and keep winning."

Darron Gibson has admitted the last week has been a tough physical test.

After not being involved in a first-team game for two months, the Manchester United midfielder started three times in eight days as the Red Devils' injury problems began to take their toll.

Gibson has responded to the challenge, scoring both goals to overcome Tottenham in the Carling Cup, adding another in the weekend rout of West Ham at Upton Park and then producing a towering midfield display in Germany as United topped their Champions League group by beating Wolfsburg.

Although the 22-year-old is likely to find himself back on the substitutes' bench for Saturday's Premier League clash with Aston Villa at Old Trafford, with Wolves also heading up the M6 on Tuesday, Gibson is guaranteed more action before the hectic Christmas period begins.

'From not playing at all to playing three games in a week is tough going,' said Gibson. 'But the manager has shown enough trust in me and I feel I have taken my opportunities so far. Hopefully they keep coming.

'It is a difficult time for United at present. Obviously I don't like players being injured but it has given me a chance to prove myself.'

Of the 14 players who missed the trip to Germany, only Nemanja Vidic, Ryan Giggs, Wayne Rooney and Dimitar Berbatov will definitely be available to face Villa, which does little to ease a defensive injury crisis.

Michael Carrick is set to partner Vidic, with Darren Fletcher occupying the right-back berth as United look to keep the pressure on Chelsea, whose lead at the top was cut to two points last weekend.

After collecting his first winners' medal with United last season, when Sir Alex Ferguson's men won the Carling Cup, Gibson is eager to play a significant role in more success as he tries to establish himself at Old Trafford.

'Manchester United is the best club in the world,' he said. 'When you leave here there is only one way to go and that is down.

Darron Gibson is loving life at United, and he hopes it will only get better.

The youngster has been a starter in the Reds' last three games, scoring three scorchers in the process, and has shone in the centre of midfield.

Whilst admitting that recent injuries have opened the door for him, Gibson is grateful for the chance to show what he can do. With first team opportunities sometimes limited, he knows it’s important to take every chance that comes his way, and he is pleased with his progress so far.

“It is difficult for United but it has given me a chance to prove myself," he said. "Obviously I don't like players being injured but it has given me a chance. I feel I have taken my opportunities so far and hopefully they keep coming.

“I think I have done well in the games I have stepped into. From not playing at all to playing three games in a week is tough going. The manager trusts me to put me in the team and I feel I have done alright.”

The Irishman has made massive strides in the last 18 months, with a couple of Premier League games under his belt to add to his cup appearances. He just wants to push on now and try and establish himself as more of a regular starter.

If he can achieve this, he can’t envisage being anywhere else other than at United. “Last season was my first real one at getting games so hopefully this season I will get a lot more. I am pushing a lot harder this season. We will see what happens. I have not really got a timescale worked out.

“Manchester United is the best club in the world. There is only one way when you leave here. It is very difficult to make it at United but if you do you reap the rewards.

“People know the gaffer gives young lads chances. If you take your chance he sticks with you. Hopefully I will keep getting a few more games.”

The Carling Cup semi-final with Manchester City in January will give Darron two more opportunities to prove his first team mettle. He intends to grasp that chance with both hands and keep showing his manager that he has what it takes to be a United player.

“The cup-ties are massive games. It is another chance to prove myself. It is tough to get into the team regularly when you are only young. Hopefully I can keep going the way I have by scoring a few goals.”

Despite being heralded this season, Darron Gibson has been around for a while. Joining United in 2004, he made his debut in the Carling Cup against Barnet and was a part of the 05/06 United reserve side that did the treble.

He has spent spells on loan at Royal Antwerp and Wolves but really made his name on the final day of last season when he scored the only goal as an a massively understrength United team beat a Hull team needing a win to ensure their safety. The goal, a thunderous long range effort, was a precursor as to what would follow as this season he has blasted away both Spurs and West Ham with long range goals but is there more to his game than that?

As a central midfielder he lacks mobility and apart from his long range shooting which in itself can be wayward at times has no other discernible talents, a jack of all trades if you will. Many have complained he is not United quality but he has improved every season and is improving with every game he plays this season too thus it is no surprise that of all the youngsters at Old Trafford, Sir Alex Ferguson claims he is the closest to making the jump to the first team.

At 22, Gibson will be pleased that he is making first team appearances but he has not won over all of Old Trafford as it is more than obvious that he is still learning. Some feel he is but a squad player or that he could do well at a lesser club but he is not United quality but Gibson has hardly been given a fair chance to show what he can do.

The problem facing Gibson is that he is so far down the pecking order, when will he ever get a chance to prove himself? Fletcher, Carrick, Scholes, Giggs and arguably Anderson are all ahead of him and I presume that upon his return (when ever that is!) Hargreaves will be too. It is easy to forget that he has only appeared 6 times for United this term and only 1 of those being a Premier League start.

United have faced this problem before with the likes of Darren Fletcher, who now looks the part afterbeing given first team experience as United went through a transitional period in the middle of the decade. But the difference is the competition Gibson faces is a lot stronger than the players Fletcher had to compete with, so where Fletcher had was bled into the team and United are reaping the rewards now, Gibson it appears will not have the same luxury.

A central midfielder is the fulcrum of the game, it is a not a position easily mastered so the fact that Gibson does not look the part now at 22 with just 21 first team appearances to his name should not worry us. One can easily point to a player like Lampard who did not look anything like the player his is now at the age of 22.

Midfielders don’t reach their peaks well into their 20s whilst Gibson is just 22. Fletcher is an example of a player that has come into his own after questions were raised about his ability so I wouldn’t be too quick to judge Gibson yet. Although talk of him as the replacement for this player or that player may be premature with more games under his belt, who knows what he could develop into.

Cardiff City boss Dave Jones admits he will make an enquiry for Darron Gibson, but does not expect to sign the Manchester United midfielder.

Jones is keen to improve his squad when the transfer window reopens and wants Gibson to aid Cardiff's push for promotion to the Premier League.

He has previously tried to sign the Republic of Ireland man on loan and will again ask Sir Alex Ferguson if he can take Gibson for the rest of the season.

However, with the 22-year-old having featured regularly for United in recent weeks due to the club's injury crisis, Jones doubts he will receive a positive answer from Ferguson.

"Why would Darron Gibson come here when he's playing for United?" said Jones in the News of the World.

"We've enquired about him in the past. I will go back to Sir Alex and ask him again about Darron.

"I will probably get the same answer as I did last time. He will chuckle down the phone and say 'Get lost!'

"Darron is in United's team at the moment and he has scored a few goals for them this season.

"I've got a good relationship with Sir Alex but I can't see him saying, 'Okay Dave, I've got no players but I'll let you have him'.

"But I'll ask because Darron is on my list.

"January is the halfway stage and we need to kick on for the rest of the season."

How much are you looking forward to Sunday’s final and what kind of game are you expecting?
It’s going to be a very tough match for us because Aston Villa are playing very well at the moment. We’re all really looking forward to it - I think it’ll be a good cup final and hopefully we can win it.

After starting last season’s final, you must be hoping for another chance this time round…
I always hope to be involved. I’m not sure what the team will be, but hopefully I’ll be involved at some stage of the game.

If you are involved, how much will the experience of playing at Wembley in the final last year help?
It’ll be a big help. Last season’s final was probably the biggest game of my career and there was a lot of pressure on, but having played there last year I don’t think I’ll be as nervous this time. Last year was a great experience and hopefully that will help me if I’m involved on Sunday.

You must have been pleased to get a full game under your belt against West Ham having only made a couple of substitute appearances in the last few weeks…
Yes I was very pleased to get a run-out especially as I haven’t played too much recently. It’s always nice to get a start and playing alongside Paul Scholes was great. He’s been in really good form recently and you learn so much from him. It’s great to play alongside all the midfielders, but Scholesy has got so much experience and you pick up so many little things from him.

Is there an extra determination to win on Sunday as it would be the first time in the club’s history that United have retained a cup?
Everyone wants to win trophies and the Carling Cup has become a better competition in the last few years. The lads are all in good spirits and raring to go, and if we play well I think we’ll win.

Aside from the defeat at Everton, United have been in great form of late. Why is it that the team always seems to come into form after Christmas?
I’m not really sure and I guess if we knew why then we’d come into form before Christmas! It just seems to be what happens and it’s been the same this season - we’ve kicked on again and picked up some decent results. Hopefully we can keep that going.

Villa have taken four points off United this season. Do you feel like you owe them one at Wembley?
I wouldn’t say so. We’re just concentrating on getting the job done on Sunday and if we play the way we know we can I think we’ll be okay.

Which Villa players will you be keeping a particularly close eye on?
They’ve got some very quick players in Ashley Young and Gabby Agbonlahor, while someone like John Carew gives them a different dimension up front. He’s big and strong and a real handful. They’ve got some great young players and as a team they’re a very good unit. So they are dangerous, but I think we’re equally as dangerous, if not more so.

Some people believe the new Wembley doesn’t have the same feel and magic about it as the old stadium. Do you agree?
No, the magic hasn’t gone at all. It’s a great place to play and a cup final is always a great occasion and a great day out. Winning it obviously makes it even better and hopefully we can do the business on Sunday.

Stunned Manchester United are ready to get their campaign back on track against Blackburn Rovers at Ewood Park on Sunday.

The Reds are reeling from their Premier League title setback against Chelsea and the European Cup quarter final KO against Bayern Munich.

But goalscorer Darron Gibson insists the champions will not let the season collapse with five games to go.

Although Chelsea are in the title box seat Gibson says United still have the stomach for a scrap.

"I cannot describe the disappointment but we have to pick ourselves up for Blackburn Rovers on Sunday. We are still in the race for the title," he said.

"We cannot lie down and let the whole season go. It is either that or we stand up and fight and go for the championship.

"We have the experience in the dressing room to stand up and fight back. There are lads in there who have been in this position before and done it before.

"We have the characters and experienced players to pick ourselves up. I think we will be all right."

Gibson's third minute opener set United up for a sensational 3-0 lead against Bayern.

But an Ivica Olic goal minutes before half time gave the Germans heart and Rafael's second half sending off wrecked the Reds game plan.

Manchester United midfielder Darron Gibson has briefly returned home from the club's tour of North America after the death of his grandmother.

The club confirmed he has been given permission to leave their base in Philadelphia.

The 22-year-old is scheduled to arrive back tomorrow from the family home in Londonderry with United set to play the second match of their tour against Philadelphia Union at Lincoln Financial Field.

Gibson played a part in the team's 3-1 victory against Celtic in Toronto on Friday.

Two games in the capital in the space of a week could define the season for Manchester United man Darron Gibson.

The Derry native is part of the United squad which flew into Dublin this morning ahead of tonight's friendly at the new Lansdowne Road, the first soccer game to be played at the Dublin 4 venue, and while it's uncertain if Wayne Rooney -- fresh from his Smokegate scandal -- will start, United boss Alex Ferguson has already stated that Ireland internationals Gibson and John O'Shea will both start against an Airtricity League XI.

Gibson is praying that another good display in the red shirt in Dublin tonight will see him earn a place in United's starting team for the coming season.

Just a week later Gibson will be back in the capital, part of the Ireland squad which takes on Argentina in a friendly next Wednesday. Now that Glenn Whelan - who has almost been an ever-present in the Irish side under Giovanni Trapattoni - will miss that game due to injury, it's a chance for Gibson to stake a claim in the Ireland XI for the opening bout of the Euro 2012 qualifiers against Armenia next month.

"It's a big week for me and I am desperate to do well," Gibson told the Herald. "Tonight's game against the League of Ireland team is only a friendly but it's our last friendly of the pre-season and it's a great chance for me to show the manager here at United what I can do.

"I had a decent run with United last season but I want to play more this year," added Gibson, who scored five goals in 23 appearances for the Red Devils last term.

"Every pre-season my aim is to establish myself in the United team and play every week and this year is no different. I had a good pre-season, I played well in the friendly games and scored a goal, so I hope I can carry that into the game in Dublin tonight and then into the Premier League season.

"We'll have a tough game against the League of Ireland lads and it's a chance to show the manager at United what I can do for the team."

Sir Alex Ferguson gave a glowing assessment of Republic of Ireland international Darron Gibson during his post-match press conference in the wake of Manchester United's 7-1 Airtricity Challenge victory on Wednesday.

The 22-year-old has gradually broken into the first-team at Old Trafford in recent years, most notably last season when he scored in the UEFA Champions League tie against Bayern Munich.

Stoke are closing in on Republic of Ireland international midfielder Darron Gibson from Manchester United.

Gibson, who is one of the most highly rated players to come out of Old Trafford famed academy in the last couple of years, has Champions League experience and has played 38 games for Man Utd, scoring eight times.

The midfielder has also had loan spells at Royal Antwerp, one goal in thirty three games, and Wolves, one goal in twenty four games, but was a mainstay in the match day squad last season, scoring five goals in twenty three games.

The Potters are finalising a deal to bring the 22-year-old to the Britannia Stadium on a six-month loan, with the option of an extension in January should both parties agree. Gibson was on the bench throughout Ireland’s 1-0 win over Armenia and his manager implied this would the way it would stay until he started getting regular first team football, to give him more “hunger”.

Giovanni Trapattoni has denied reports that he claimed Darron Gibson would have to leave Manchester United in order to further his international career.

Reports claimed over the weekend that Gibson might have to quit Old Trafford to become a regular in Trapattoni's Republic of Ireland side.

The suggestions earned an angry rebuke from Gibson with the midfielder unhappy that Trapattoni was advising him to leave United, stating the Italian 'must have been having a laugh'.

"If Trapattoni wants me to move on from a club like Manchester United to better my game, move to somewhere like Stoke where I'll get more games but have little chance of winning anything, then I just don't know," Gibson told the Derry Journal.

"At what club, other than Manchester United, could I go to improve my game? However, after Ireland's 3-1 win over Andorra, Trapattoni moved to clear up the confusion insisting he never suggested for Gibson to find pastures new, but to work harder to establish himself at United.

"What I told him was that, for him, the action is not finished when he does not have the ball," said Trapattoni.

"I told him that in this great team (United) it is not easy to play in this situation because he plays with ten great players and when these great players have the ball they play.

"He must ask for the ball, he must want the ball. That is important.

"He has to work to get the ball. He has fantastic vision and the long ball and he has a good personality with the ball."

Darron Gibson has a sledgehammer of a right foot and Sir Alex Ferguson wants him to use it to its most devastating effect, but the Irish midfielder is determined not to become typecast as a one-dimensional player.

The 22-year-old has always been known for his strength. Even in the youth team his explosive shots and ability to hit long-distance passes set him apart from team-mates and opponents.

He has progressed gradually through the ranks at United and is now on the periphery of the Reds' first eleven, charged chiefly with getting goals from central midfield – a valuable commodity in the modern game - and something he highlighted with a delightful chipped effort against Scunthorpe on Wednesday.

“The manager hasn’t sat me down to talk to me specifically about what he wants from me this season but on a simplistic level he wants me to get forward and score goals,” Darron told ManUtd.com.

Shouts of ‘shoot’ from fans whenever he gets the ball in sight of goal show how dangerous he can be, but Gibson hopes those calls don't drown out his other qualities.

“Sometimes when I get the ball I laugh because I hear the crowd yelling ‘shoot’, but I’m miles away from goal. It’s nice that fans think I can score from distance, though.

"When I get the ball in my own half and I hear someone yelling for me to shoot it’s strange and I hope people don’t think that’s all I can do. But shooting is a big part of my game so I can understand why people yell it out.”

Last season was the breakthrough season for Gibson; Sir Alex is fond of his abilities and he put them into practice with eight goals in 38 appearances. “At the start of last season the gaffer asked me if I wanted to go out on loan and I said no,” Darron explains.

“It took a while for me to get a game and at times I wondered if I’d made the right decision but when I did play I felt I played well.

"Getting picked for the Champions League quarter-final against Bayern Munich – and scoring – was a big boost so from there I never thought about going out on loan this season. This is where I want to play my football for the rest of my career.”

Darron Gibson has revealed he is desperate to secure a regular Manchester United starting spot in the near future.

Gibson, 23, has scored once in three games this season but has failed to begin a single Premier League game. With evergreen veteran Paul Scholes still pulling the strings in midfield, as well as increased competition from the returning Michael Carrick and Anderson, the Republic of Ireland international is aware he has a fight on his hands.

He said: "I'm nearly 23 and I need to be playing games.

"There is a lot of pressure at Manchester United. The manager can't really afford to throw me in; if we lose I'll get the blame for it.

"Well I don't think I'd get the blame totally. But if you start to play young players for experience when you've got the likes of [Ryan] Giggs and [Paul] Scholes, people start to ask questions.

"You can only get so much experience from sitting on the bench. You need to play eventually.

"But the way I see it, if I go in there and play as well as I can every time I play, I think I'll be a valuable asset.

"I'd rather be first choice every week. It's going to take me a while to get there, so I'm not going to give up on it.

"I think I'll win more medals at Manchester United than anywhere else and, obviously, if I'm playing for Manchester United then I'll play for Ireland as well."

Manchester United midfielder Darron Gibson has warned the club's critics not to write them off.

The Red Devils are still unbeaten in all competitions this season, but have been guilty of some patchy form and have ended up drawing games they looked like winning.

Their goalless stalemate with Manchester City on Wednesday evening kept them in second place, but they now trail leaders Chelsea by four points.

Gibson knows that they are not of the race by any means at this stage of the season and believes that Sir Alex Ferguson's side will only improve.

"Everyone's saying we're not playing that well and there's no way we'll win the title this year, but we haven't lost yet and we're still up there," Gibson told the club's official website..

"It was a frustrating result," he added. "I think we deserved to win. We played the better football but we didn't penetrate enough in the final third.

"In a way it's frustrating to come away with only a draw but when you consider we didn't really work the goalkeeper very much I think we also have to hold up our hands and accept a point. We were pleased with how we played, though."

After Gibson opened his international account with a 30-yard screamer against Wales last night, Republic of Ireland coach Giovanni Trapattoni repeated his comments of last September when he suggested the Old Trafford starlet should seek a new club.
However, when it was put to Gibson that a move to a smaller club such as Stoke could benefit certain aspects of his game, he was unimpressed.

Sir Alex Ferguson has refused to get involved in a war of words with Republic of Ireland boss Giovanni Trapattoni over the future of Manchester United midfielder Darron Gibson.

The Derry-born star excelled for his country in midweek, scoring a fine goal in their 3-0 win over Wales in Dublin on Tuesday evening. It prompted Trapattoni to repeat his call for Gibson to look elsewhere as he struggles to make an impact at Old Trafford.

"I don't know in what context he said it," said Ferguson. "The media today can exaggerate anything now. It may have been a simple message for Darron. Who knows?"

So far this season, Gibson has made just 12 appearances in all competitions, and started only three Premier League games.

The Italian has said similar things before, which prompted Gibson to claim he would prefer to make a limited contribution at United than play more games at a lesser club.

Not one normally to encourage other managers to speak about his players, Ferguson might be expected to respond to Trapattoni's latest musings.

However, ahead of Saturday's Premier League encounter with Manchester City, when Gibson may struggle even to make the bench, Ferguson has stayed out of the argument.

He added: "I only picked up the headline of it on Thursday and didn't really bother about the content.

"I know Trapattoni. He is a sensible, experienced man. I don't really give much credence to it. I don't think he would say it to cause mischief."

Manchester United star Darron Gibson is confident they will be able to handle Liverpool new boy Andy Carroll in Sunday's showdown at Anfield.

Carroll, who joined Liverpool from Newcastle on transfer deadline day in a club record £35million deal, is tipped to make his long-awaited debut against United after finally recovering from injury.

United have a number of problems in defence ahead of the game with skipper Nemanja Vidic suspended following his red card against Chelsea and Rio Ferdinand expected to miss out through injury.

Gibson admits it is a big blow to lose Vidic for the trip to Anfield, but he believes they have enough quality in their squad to cope with Liverpool's attacking threat.

"It is a big blow to lose Vidic, but we have got players capable of stepping in and doing a job," Gibson told skysports.com at an event promoting EA SPORTS FIFA 11 Ultimate Team.

"Jonny Evans is back, Wes Brown is there and John O'Shea can play at centre-back so I think we have got players capable of stepping in and covering."

Gibson is aware of the threat posed by Carroll having come up against him earlier in the season while the striker was at Newcastle, but he is confident United can shackle the powerful forward if he plays on Sunday.

"He [Carroll] has played against us this season already and I think the lads will know what to expect having watched him on TV as well," he added.

"Obviously he is a good player, but I think the lads can step in and deal with him."

Republic of Ireland international Gibson insists facing arch-rivals Liverpool remains the biggest game on the calendar for United despite the increased rivalry with local foes Manchester City.

"It has to be the biggest game still for us," he said.

"Obviously City's rivalry is going up because they are pushing up and challenging us, but Liverpool is still the biggest one for us."

Improved

United have already beaten Liverpool twice this season in the Premier League and FA Cup, but Gibson knows they are now a different proposition under Kenny Dalglish.

"Well obviously they have improved under him and they are playing well at the minute so they will be a different proposition, but I think if we go and do what we have been doing and play well I think we will be alright," noted Gibson.

Gibson believes Sunday's clash is the perfect game for United to bounce back from their midweek defeat at Chelsea.

"The mood in the camp is good," added Gibson. "Obviously everybody was disappointed at losing the game, but we just need to pick ourselves up and be ready for Sunday

"It's a tough game but I think it is the perfect one for us to go in to and if we win it, it will be a great result."

It would be unfair to single him out though, as many United fans have, given the poor displays we’ve watched so often from the likes of Darren Fletcher, Michael and Carrick and even Paul Scholes this season.

Plenty of reds would be more than happy if we could swap Gibson, plus money, for someone like Jack Rodwell this summer, including his International manager, Giovanni Trapattoni, who believes he needs to move to a club where he can play regularly. Gibson has other ideas though.

“I want to stay at Manchester United,” said Gibson.

“I can see where Trapattoni’s coming from. If I’m playing every week he’s going to get the best out of me when I play for Ireland but at the moment I’ve got no ideas of moving anywhere else. But I’ve got a long way to go yet to establish myself so I’m going to keep my head down and keep working hard. There is a lot more pressure for me because I’ve got to prove I can go in there and play every week. When I do go in there I can’t afford to play badly. Gibson has played 53 games for United, scoring 9 goals over 3 seasons. However, Sir Alex Ferguson hasn't selected the midfielder on a regular basis. 'Gibbo' was publicly told by Ireland boss Giovanni Trapattoni to leave The Reds to fulfil his potential elsewhere, but he has reacted by saying he does not want to move to another club. Speaking at an EA Sports FIFA 11 launch, Gibson vowed to fight for a spot in the team.

"My contract ends in 2012 and although there have been no talks at the minute, I am not too worried about it. I think they will maybe in the summer sit down and have a chat about a new deal and I am confident I can get one. I have no plans to leave Manchester United." he said, adamantly. "My main goal is to try and get to play every week and be in there as a regular, but I think things are going well for me at the minute."

"Obviously I want to kick on and get in the team, but I am happy enough. I am happy enough with my form, I have got no complaints," Gibson added. Gibson became the first player to be cyber-bullied off Twitter following a stream of abusive messages from United fans claiming he was not fit to play for the club.

Ireland international Gibson was the latest United player to join Twitter after team-mates Rio Ferdinand, Michael Owen, Nani, Nemanja Vidic and Wayne Rooney.

But the 23-year-old, who only opened his account yesterday lunchtime, had deleted it within a couple of hours after attracting so many negative comments.

And, less than two hours after Gibson set up his @dgibbo28 account and had it promoted by Rio Ferdinand to his nearly 850,000 followers, the midfielder apparently realized he didn't like reading a continuous stream of insults and deleted the account.

UPDATE: After Gibson's name became a worldwide trending topic on Twitter, he has come up with a story and issued a statement to intrepid Twitter reporter Rio Ferdinand. Rio tweets:

So it was the abuse that drove him away, then. Going to the trouble of creating and then deleting an account just to "see what the lads were up to" for two hours doesn't make sense. “Technique is everything and body position is crucial. Plant your standing foot beside the ball to give you a solid base. Keep your head over the ball so you don’t sky it and keep your head down.

In training, it helps if you recreate match conditions for shooting. At Carrington we do drills at the end of training when we are tired.

The coach stands on the byline knocking the ball to the edge of the box and we finish it first time past the keeper or on the run.

We vary the angle and introduce a defender rushing out to add to the pressure. We also do core exercises to improve balance, giving us more stability: one- and two-leg squats, press-ups and sit-ups on Swiss balls and, holding medicine balls, we introduce twisting and rotation.

Most importantly, don’t try and smash the ball. Every time I shoot I think about making a smooth controlled connection. And it works.”

VIVAnews - Tidak menjadi pilihan pertama di Manchester United membuat gelandang Darron Gibson harus rela terancam dibuang ke klub lain. Saat ini Gibson bersama dua rekannya di MU, Wes Brown dan John O’Shea, sudah diminati Sunderland.

Gibson beralasan jika memang dia harus pergi dari MU, itu demi kepentingan karirnya. "Kalau yang terbaik buat saya adalah pergi ke klub yang akan memainkan saya tiap pekan, maka biarlah begitu," kata Gibson seperti dilansir The Daily Mail, Sabtu 11 Juni 2011.

Gibson sendiri mengaku belum membicarakan keputusannya ini dengan manajer MU Sir Alex Ferguson. Namun, jika keputusan harus diambilnya sendiri, maka Gibson dengan mantap memilih untuk pindah.

"Saya hampir (berusia) 24. Sudah saatnya saya pergi ke tempat lain jika memang saya tidak dimainkan secara reguler," kata Gibson lagi.

Sunderland sebagai calon klub baru Gibson sengaja menjual Jordan Henderson ke Liverpool. Uang penjualan Henderson akan digunakan untuk membawa Gibson, Brown dan O’Shea ke Stadium of Light --kandang Sunderland.

"Jika memang Sunderland bisa mendapatkan kami bertiga, maka itu akan jadi (kesepakatan) bisnis yang luar biasa," ujar Gibson. (umi)

Manchester - Manchester United dikabarkan segera melepas Darron Gibson di bursa transfer Januari ini. Everton santer disebut-sebut sebagai klub tujuan selanjutnya dari pemain internasional Republik Irlandia itu.

Seperti diwartakan oleh Mirror Football, Gibson telah dipersilakan untuk meninggalkan Old Trafford oleh Sir Alex Ferguson. Kini, pemain kelahiran 25 Oktober 1987 itu dikabarkan telah menggelar pembicaraan dengan The Toffees.

Musim panas lalu, Gibson nyaris bergabung dengan Sunderland. Namun, transfer urung terjadi karena tidak terjalinnya kesepakatan kontrak personal.

Darron Gibson joins Everton

Midfielder Darron Gibson has signed a four-and-a-half-year deal with Everton for an undisclosed fee.

The Republic of Ireland international, now 24, made his Manchester United debut a day after his 18th birthday, in a League Cup third round tie against Barnet in October 2005.

Gibson went on to play 60 times for the Reds, netting 10 goals during his Old Trafford career. Those strikes included goals against German opposition in Champions League quarter (Bayern Munich, 2010) and semi-final ties (Schalke, 2011).

A foot injury sustained last summer during pre-season kept Gibson out of first-team action until the Reds’ Carling Cup fifth round fixture against Crystal Palace on 30 November. His only other appearance in 2011/12 came on Boxing Day when Wigan Athletic visited Old Trafford.

Everybody at Manchester United wishes Gibson all the best for the future. He will wear the no.4 shirt at Goodison Park.

Sir Alex Ferguson has wished Darron Gibson all the best following his switch to Everton, a club where the United manager feels his former midfielder will thrive.

The Republic of Ireland international put pen to paper on a four-and-a-half-year deal with the Toffees on Friday morning. His old boss believes Gibson regretted not joining Sunderland when he had the chance in the summer and now expects him to do well at Goodison Park.

“It's a good move for Darron,” Sir Alex told reporters on Friday. “He has to get on with his career.

"He played some terrific games for us and he has terrific ability, but in terms of the pecking order here he knew he wouldn't be a first-team regular all the time.

“Unfortunately he got an injury earlier in the season which kept him out for ten weeks, but he’s fit again and it’s a good opportunity for him.

“He missed the chance to go to Sunderland and I think he regretted that. He's taken the opportunity to go to Everton and I think they really need a player like him.

Rooney dan Scholes Ada di Balik Hengkangnya Gibson

Bola.net - Darron Gibson mengakui kalau keputusannya untuk hijrah dari dari Manchester United (MU) ke Everton tak lepas dari dua nama yakni Paul Scholes dan Wayne Rooney.

Sebuah keputusan mengejutkan memang, sebab gelandang berusia 24 tahun ini merupakan lulusan dari akademi MU. Apalagi The Red Devils kini sedang krisis lini tengah, namun ia malah meninggalkan Sir Alex Ferguson.

Namun, pemain tim nasional Irlandia ini mengakui kalau kembalinya Paul Scholes lah yang membuatnya ingin hengkang. Sebab, sebelum datangnya pemain veteran tersebut, ia sudah merasa yakin akan selalu menjadi starter karena beberapa gelandang seperti Tom Cleverley, Darren Fletcher juga tengah cedera.

"Saya sangat frustrasi (di MU). Ketika Scholesy kembali, manajer mengatakan padaku kalau aku bebas untuk pergi," ujar Gibson. "Everton telah memperlihatkan ketertarikan sejak sebulan lalu, dan sang pelatih (David Moyes) menginginkanku, maka aku pun pergi ke sini."

"Aku pikir ini adalah saat yang tepat bagiku untuk pergi, dan aku melihat ke depan untuk waktuku di sini," paparnya.

Gibson juga mengakui kalau Rooney juga sempat menyarankannya untuk menerima pinangan Everton, yang merupakan mantan klub dari striker tim nasional Inggris itu. Bukan hanya Rooney saja, ia sempat berdiskusi dengan Tim Cahill, serta mantan pemain United yang sekarang telah menjadi kapten The Toffees, Phil Neville, sebelum memutuskan pindah.

"Aku telah berbicara dengan Wayne mengenai hal ini, dan setelah melihat fasilitas-fasilitas (Everton), maka ini adalah keputusan yang mudah," ungkapnya, "Ia (Rooney) berkata padaku, kalau itu adalah klub besar dan ia benar-benar menikmati waktunya di sana dan orang-orangnya."

sebenarnya gw suka dengan gaya permainan gibson..

pertama kali ngeliat dia main di first team....gw liat ada sedikit kesamaan dari gaya dan passingnya carrick dan dan skill tendangan geledek nya scholes....
dan dia tipikal playmaker banget menurut gw....

ngambil bola dari bawah....distribusikan ke depan atau samping....
lalu klo ada kesempatan shooting di luar kotak penalti....
tendangan keras nya di atas rata2 pemain united menurut gw....

cuma memang jarang dapat kesempatan dan tidak konsisten.....

good luck deh gibbo....semoga cemerlang karir nya di everton

MANCHESTER, KOMPAS.com - Pelatih Manchester United (MU), Sir Alex Ferguson, mengatakan, keputusan Darron Gibson pindah ke Everton sudah tepat. Fergie menilai, karier pemain muda asal Republik Irlandia itu akan berkembang pesat bersama "The Toffees".

"Ini adalah langkah yang baik dari Darron. Dia harus melakukan ini untuk kariernya," ujar Fergie tentang mantan pemainnya itu seperti dilansir dalam situs resmi MU.

MU akhirnya melepaskan Gibson ke Everton, Jumat (13/1/2012). Pemain bernama lengkap Darron Thomas Daniel Gibson itu pindah ke Everton dengan kontrak selama empat setengah tahun hingga musim 2015-2016.

Gibson selama ini kesulitan mendapatkan tempat di tim utama MU. Cedera kaki yang dialaminya sebelum Primer League bergulir musim ini membuat kesempatan mainnya meredup. Selama separuh musim ini, membuat "Gibbo" hanya menjalani dua pertandingan.

"Sangat disayangkan dia (Gibson) cedera di awal musim yang membuatnya absen hinnga 10 pekan. Tapi, sekarang dia sudah pulih dan kepindahan ini adalah kesempatan yang baik untuknya," ujar Fergie.

"Dia sempat mengalami kegagalan saat ingin ke Sunderland akhir musim lalu, dan saya rasa ia menyesal. Jadi, sekarang dia mendapatkan kesempatan bersama Everton. Saya rasa mereka (Everton) membutuhkan pemain seperti dia," kata Fergie lagi.

Sejak bergabung ke Old Trafford pada 1 Juli 2004, Gibson telah menjalani 60 pertandingan bersama "Setan Merah". Pemain kelahiran 25 Oktober 1987 itu mengawali debutnya ketika MU menjamu Barnet di Old Trafford pada laga Piala Carling, 26 Oktober 2005. Selama berkostum MU, Gibson sudah menyumbangkan 10 gol untuk timnya.

Mungkin karena Steve Bruce sudah tidak menjadi pelatih Sunderland jadi Sir Alex mempertimbangkan melepas Gibbo kesana. Yach minimal di Everton ada mantan pemain United lainnya, yakni Phil Neville :D

The Republic of Ireland international, who scored 10 goals in 50 appearances before swapping Old Trafford for Goodison Park in early January, struck the only goal of the game to seal a dramatic and invaluable win for the Toffees, who move up to ninth in the table.

The defeat for City was their second in five league games and their third defeat in all competitions in January. With United beating Stoke City 2-0, only a better goal difference (+41 to the Reds' +35) is keeping the Blues on top.

Bola.net - Darron Gibson menjadi bintang Everton saat mencetak gol tunggal kemenangan The Toffees atas Manchester City, Rabu (1/2) kemarin.

Tak hanya memberi tiga poin untuk timnya, Gibson juga memberi "berkah" untuk mantan klubnya, Manchester United, yang kini menyamai poin City di puncak klasemen.

Gol Gibson ke gawang Joe Hart tersebut merupakan gol pertama Gibson untuk Everton sejak pindah dari Old Trafford Januari lalu.

Bek Setan Merah, Rio Ferdinand, rupanya juga ingin "berterima kasih" atas gol mantan rekan setimnya tersebut. Rio pun berjanji untuk mentraktir Gibson di restoran Italia miliknya.

"Sedang menyiapkan makanan gratis di Rosso Restoran punya saya untuk Darron Gibson!," tulis Ferdinand pada akun Twitter-nya.

Namun Ferdinand tak menyebut apakah ia juga akan mentraktir Louis Saha, John O'Shea, Kiko Macheda, atau Gabriel Obertan bila juga mencetak gol kemenangan masing-masing timnya ketika menghadapi City. (tw/zul)
