United secured the signature of French starlet Gabriel Obertan on 8 July 2009, with the highly-rated forward/winger joining the Reds from Bordeaux following a four-year spell with Les Girondins.

Prior to his arrival at Bordeaux, Obertan began his career with local club Paris-Pantin FC, before making the switch to Paris FC in 2002 and then Paris-Saint Germain. After spending a year at each, he moved to the famed Clairefontaine Academy in order to further his development, before being spotted by Bordeaux scouts.

He joined Les Girondins in 2005 and spent his first year plying his trade in the reserves. After being offered a three-year professional contract in 2006, he was promoted to the first team at the start of the 2006/07 season and made his debut, aged 17, on 30 September 2006 against Valenciennes. He fired his first goal for the club on 22 April 2007, scoring the second in a 2-0 win over Saint-Étienne. By the end of the campaign he had racked up 17 appearances, 16 of them as a substitute.

The following season, he featured in 26 matches and scored two goals, but he was still limited to mostly substitute appearances due to the abundance of strikers at manager Laurent Blanc's disposal. That trend continued into 2008/09 resulting in Obertan being loaned out to fellow Ligue 1 side Lorient for the second half of the campaign, during which time he featured 15 times, scoring once.

On the international front, Obertan has progressed through the ranks for his country receiving caps at Under 16, 17, 18 and 19 levels. He is currently involved in the French under 21 squad.

Now a Red after signing a four-year deal, the versatile Frenchman is looking forward to the challenge that comes with playing at Old Trafford. "I am very happy to join Manchester United," he said. "This is a big opportunity for
me to play at such a great club. I am very excited to be here and I look forward to proving what I can do."

Gabriel Obertan (born 26 February 1989 in Pantin, Paris, France) is a French footballer currently playing for Manchester United of England. He primarily plays as a winger, but can also play in the centre of midfield and as a striker. A former attendee of the famous Clairefontaine academy, Obertan began his professional career playing for Bordeaux in France, before joining Manchester United for an undisclosed fee in July 2009. He is a member of the France U21 football team and was named as France's best player overall at the 2009 Toulon Tournament.

Sir Alex Ferguson may have opted not to further strengthen his squad in the dying embers of the summer transfer season, but there are plenty of reinforcements on the horizon.

As well as the impending return of squad members like Rio Ferdinand, Edwin van der Sar, Rafael and Owen Hargreaves, new signing Gabriel Obertan is recovering well from injury, and young forwards Adem Ljajic and Mame Biram Diouf may both arrive in January.

Speaking to October's edition of Inside United magazine, Sir Alex said: "Gabriel has had a spine problem, but I think he’ll be back in about a month to six weeks’ time. We’re taking our time with him because we want him back and at 100 per cent. He’s very quick, he can play both sides or through the middle and he brings a real versatility to us.

"At 16 he was one of the outstanding young talents in Europe, and he’s said to us that over this last year and a half he’s been playing with this back injury and no-one thought about getting a scan. We expect big things from him. He’s a nice boy, speaks good English and should have no problem settling in."

Ljajic and Diouf were both loaned back to their former clubs – Partizan Belgrade and FK Molde respectively – and have been closely monitored by United staff. Both may be brought to bolster the Reds' ranks during the course of the season.

"Diouf will stay there [Molde] until January, at which point we’ll make a decision over whether to apply for a work permit for him or leave him there for the full season," said Sir Alex.

"He’s a powerful boy, quick as hell, good in the air, 21 years of age and he’s done very well at Molde. Playing in Norway is similar to playing here in terms of climate, so we’ve not got an issue with that either.

"Adem Ljajic is another player who we have on loan, at Partizan Belgrade, and he’ll join us in January. He’s doing very well. He was the star of the tournament for Serbia at the UEFA Under-19 Championships over the summer."

Obertan memang datang ke Old Trafford dengan cedera punggung yang mengganjal. Pria Perancis itu sampai harus naik meja operasi. Namun dengan kepastian pulihnya Obertan, ia kemungkinan mulai bisa membela MU pada pertengahan Oktober mendatang.

Di bulan tersebut, Setan Merah akan menjalani tiga kompetisi sekaligus. Premier League, Piala Carling (bila MU lolos) dan penyisihan grup Liga Champions.

"Gabriel punya masalah punggung tapi saya rasa dia akan kembali satu bulan hingga enam pekan mendatang," ujar Fergie dilansir Eurosport, Kamis 3 September 2009.

"Kami sengaja menunggunya karena kami ingin dia berada dalam kondisi 100 persen," tambahnya.

Obertan didatangkan MU dengan bandrol 3 juta poundsterling (Rp 49,5 miliar). Pembeliannya sendiri diacungi jempol oleh banyak pihak. Pasalnya di usia demikian belia ia sudah jadi langganan timnas junior Perancis.

Fergie juga memberi kepercayan besar pada pria kelahiran Pantin itu. Ia menilai Obertan sebagai pemain cepat dan mampu mengeksplorasi dua sisi lapangan.

Manchester United’s summer signing Gabriel Obertan is finally set to make his Manchester United debut after recovering from a spinal injury.

The French Under-21 international has participated in full training and is expected to be included in Sir Alex Ferguson’s first team squad in the next few weeks.

Obertan signed for the Premier League champions in the summer but has been undergoing rehabilitation for his back injury since joining from Bordeaux.

A likely fixture for his first appearance is the Carling Cup clash away at Burnley on October 27.

The 20-year-old forward can play in all attacking positions but is expected to line-up for United on the right wing.

United fans can finally get a glimpse of summer signing Gabriel Obertan in action tonight, as he lines up for the Reserves in a Manchester Senior Cup tie against Oldham Athletic.

The French winger has been sidelined with spine trouble since his move from Bordeaux, but will start for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side at Hyde United's Ewen Fields as he aims to kickstart his Reds career.

Brazilian full-back Rafael also returns from injury, having sufficiently recovered from shoulder trouble, and he is joined by brother Fabio, Scott Wootton and Oliver Gill in defence. Ben Amos will keep goal.

Matty James, Sam Hewson, Oliver Norwood and Robbie Brady make up the remainder of the midfield with Obertan, while Febian Brandy will lead the line as a lone striker.

Triallist goalkeeper Daniel Lloyd-Weston will be on the substitutes' bench, alongside William Keane, Magnus Eikrem and Joshua King.

The match kicks-off at 19:00 BST, with MUTV's live and exclusive coverage beginning at 18:30 BST.

Winger Gabriel Obertan has made his debut for Manchester United - three months after joining the Premier League champions from Bordeaux.

The former France Under-21 star joined United on a four-year deal in July from the French champions in a £3m transfer but was sidelined by a spinal problem.

The 20-year-old Obertan played 45 minutes in United's 3-0 Manchester Senior Cup win over Oldham at Hyde.

Brazilian full-back Rafael da Silva also returned from injury in the win.

Rafael has been out since undergoing shoulder surgery in the summer.

Obertan spent the second half of last season on loan at Ligue 1 side Lorient, where he made 15 appearances and scored once.

Gabriel Obertan is set to play for the Reds reserves against Clyde this Sunday as he nears a first-team debut.
The French forward impressed United coaches when he saw 45 minutes of action in the Manchester Senior Cup against Oldham on Monday night.

The 20-year-old is in the United team Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is taking north to face Clyde in a game designed to raise vital funds for the cash-strapped Scottish Second Division basement boys.

Broadwood director Frank Dunne said: "He has been on the phone to tell us Obertan and Rafael Da Silva will be in the squad."

Obertan is being pencilled in for a first-team bow against Barnsley in the Carling Cup on October 28.

Gabriel Obertan is set for his first start since making a shock summer move to Manchester United.

Sir Alex Ferguson raised eyebrows in July when he signed the France Under 21 forward from Bordeaux for £3million.

United don't jump into signings blindly. In fact, Brian McClair - in charge of United’s Academy - told me he’d seen Gabby aged 17, was very impressed and the Reds kept tabs on him from the on. His transfer surprised a few people in France who thought he wasn't ready for a big move. But if his injury problems are now behind him he can really kick on - all the signs are he's ready to step up. He’s still only 20, so it'll take time and he’ll need to learn – fast – about the demands of the Premier League, but physically he looks up to it.

His recent re-emergence is very well-timed because there'll be ample opportunities to impress. Antonio Valencia has shone in recent weeks and is possibly first-choice winger. But he won’t play every week. Nani hasn’t nailed down the other wide position, while Ryan Giggs will be rested and used centrally, while Ji-sung Park is injured.

Obertan has looked good in the Reserves, but his fast-tracking to the first-team indicates he’s too good for that level. With his mostly steady, occasionally eye-catching performance at Oakwell, he’s given the boss plenty to think about. And, personally, the speed and directness of Valencia and Obertan on either flank, to me, has an exciting ring to it.

Barnsley in the Carling Cup is hardly the auspicious start that most Manchester United signings hope for. Injured, questioned and even derided since the France under-21 international’s £3 million move from Bordeaux, for Gabriel Obertan a début has been three long months in coming. Success Tuesday shows that after Ronaldo, life may go on.

Obertan, who has eight caps for France under-21s, suffered a serious spinal injury prior to the move across the channel in the summer. It was a setback – well understood by United manager Sir Alex Ferguson prior to the youngster’s acquisition – that has kept the Clairefontaine graduate out of United’s 15 games this season.

Rated highly by Ferguson’s coaching staff who have watched the youngster for more than two years, the winger has appeared 54 times for Bordeaux in addition to 15 games on loan at Lorient. At 18, Ferguson says, Obertan was among the very best in Europe for his age group.

Yet it’s a career that has stagnated and not just because of injury this season. Obertan, transformed from leading starlet into loanee at Lorient one of Ligue 1’s less-fashionable clubs, is no longer the player Ferguson bought into at 18.

United – somewhat surprisingly for some in French football – provides Obertan with a route towards redemption. In three games for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s reserve team this month Obertan has demonstrated the pace, awareness and outstanding touch that brought Ferguson’s eye two years ago.

“We’ve taken our time with Gabriel as we want him at 100 per cent,” said the United manager following Tuesday’s victory over Barnsley.

“He’s very quick, he can play both sides or through the middle, and he brings a real versatility to us.

“At 16 he was one of the outstanding young talents in Europe, but over this last year-and-a-half, he’s been playing with a back injury. We expect big things from him. He’s a nice boy, he speaks good English and he’s had no problems settling in.”

Indeed, in what turned into a tough night for United at Oakwell Tuesday, Obertan was a stand-out attacking figure on début. While it’s too early to declare the Frenchman the next Thierry Henry – as opposed to the next David Bellion – the early signs are promising.

The attacker’s intelligent use of the ball, creative instincts and obvious teamwork against the Yorkshire side contrast so starkly with the infuriating Nani. Obertan’s ability to hit an early and accurate cross was also eye-opening.

So much so that the Portuguese winger may now come under pressure from United’s new signing. In three years with the club, the former Sporting Lisbon wide player has lurched from the stylish to the ridiculed. Nani’s direct, attacking performance in United’s recent victory over CSKA Moscow last week is one of the winger’s career highlights. Far too often though, Nani is lost in a sea of misplaced passes, blind alleys and wasted stepovers.

Yet width is an area in which United is both strong in numbers and weak on quality. While Antonio Valencia, Ferguson’s £16 million acquisition from Wigan Athletic this summer, is slowly growing in stature there are question marks hanging over the rest of United’s wide men.

Park Ji-Sung, who recently signed a new four-year contract, has long been a favourite of the United manager. So much so that in the really big games Park has tended to play a major role. But as was the case in the 2009 Champions League final, many supporters question Park’s inherent quality at the very top-level.

Then there is Zoran Tosic who, in nearly a year at Old Trafford, is no closer to the first team than on the day of his signature. Considered too lightweight for the Premier League on arrival from Partizan Belgrade, Tosic remained in the reserve team never to return.

Even Ryan Giggs, so majestic this season, cannot go on forever.

Obertan offers not only hope of better quality on United’s left flank but a more consistent approach. On a night when Danny Wellbeck was again excellent, and Michael Owen scored a peach of a goal, Obertan was the highlight.

Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson believes Gabriel Obertan can kick on after making his debut this week.

The winger's bow was delayed because he arrived from Bordeaux in July with a back injury, which United's medical team believe they have now corrected.

The 20-year-old played a full game in the 2-0 Carling Cup victory against Barnsley and Ferguson is expecting more to come from the exciting prospect.

He said: "Gabriel has done very well. He has the ability - there is no doubt about that.

"He has marvellous pace, which is always important in football today. He has overcome his injury, which is the most important thing.

"It means we are not worried about restrictions for the lad. We hope we have corrected the problem."

The player could be handed his UEFA Champions League debut on Tuesday at Old Trafford against CSKA Moscow, with the game being shown live on Sky Sports 2 and Sky Sports HD2 at 7.45pm.

United have rattled up three straight wins in the group and Ferguson believes just a point is now needed for the Red Devils to qualify.

He said: "I have always maintained you need 10 points to qualify.

"We now have a home game - which we hope will take us to the next stage."

MANCHESTER - Gabriel Obertan mengaku senang bisa melakukan debut bersama Manchester United di pentas Premier League. Kendati demikian, winger muda Red Devils itu mengaku kecewa membuang peluang untuk mencetak gol.

Dua gol kemenangan United atas Blackburn Rovers sendiri terjadi pada babak kedua, dimana dicetak dua bomber andalan Dimitar Berbatov dan Wayne Rooney. Obertan baru masuk pada babak kedua menggantikan Nani.

Obertan yang sudah menunggu sekira empat bulan untuk melakukan debut bersama United di pentas Premier League, mengaku lebih memikirkan kebugaran fisik dan kemenangan timnya, ketimbang gagal mencetak gol.

"Saya memang kecewa gagal mencetak gol, tapi saya sangat fit dan semua berjalan dengan lancar karena pada akhirnya kami berhasil menang. Saya sudah berlari dan berjuang dengan keras," jelas Obertan.

"Saya rasa saya hanya perlu mencari ritme permainan, beberapa pertandingan sudah cukup membuat saya fit. Permainan saya akan semakin membaik dan tidak ada alasan melakukan itu. Saya akan semakin membaik setelah beberapa pertandingan," lanjutnya.

Obertan bergabung dengan United dari Bordeaux pada awal musim. Winger asal Prancis tersebut mengaku merasa betah di Old Trafford karena bantuan rekan senegaranya Patrice Evra yang sudah lebih dulu bermain untuk Red Devils.

"Saya memang sempat gugup, tapi setelah beberapa menit kemudian semuanya hilang. Saya benar-benar menikmati pertandingan dan Pat Evra mendukung saya, jadi itu sangat menyenangkan. Keberadaan Pat memudahkan saya," tambah winger 20 tahun itu.

Gab: I Was Nervous But Evra Kept Encouraging Me

Gabriel Obertan has made a bright start to his Manchester United career, putting in a good performance against Barnsley in the week and impressing during his half hour run against Blackburn yesterday.

With ten minutes left to play and the game still at 1-0, Obertan had the opportunity to make it a dream start when Valencia presented him with a chance to score from five yards out. Somehow, he managed to miss though, something he is frustrated about.

“I was disappointed to miss my chance, but I was very fit and it all went well because we won in the end,” said Obertan. “It’s been four months now that I have been injured, so it was a good début. I ran hard and tried to do my best. I think I need a bit of rhythm; a few games to be fully fit. It’s going better and better and there’s no reason to end it. I think I’ll be better after a few games.”

Obertan reckons fellow countryman, Patrice Evra, has made his life easier since joining the club and he hopes to get in the first team squad more often.

“I was a bit nervous, but after a few minutes it was gone,” he added. “I really enjoyed the game and Pat Evra was just behind me encouraging me, so it was very good. With Pat it has been easier. I feel like I’m here for many years now so it is good to be here and I’m just enjoying it. I’ll just keep working hard to be in the squad and we’ll see what the manager will do.”

Sir Alex Ferguson has defended Obertan’s miss and reckons the Frenchman settled well in to the team.

“Gabriel was a bit nervous when he came on,” said Ferguson. “It was only his second game in seven months, so you have to put it in perspective. But then he settled down and did well. He is not happy with himself and that is a good thing.”

Gabriel Obertan was relieved to finally make his Premier League debut, even if he was left to rue an embarrassing miss against Blackburn Rovers.

The French winger has had to wait almost four months to get involved with Sir Alex Ferguson's side, so his failure to convert a simple chance at the Stretford End was not at the forefront of his thinking after the Reds' 2-0 win.

"I was disappointed to miss my chance, but I was very fit and it all went well because we won in the end," Obertan told MUTV. "It's been four months now that I have been injured, so it was a good debut. I ran hard and tried to do my best.

"I think I need a bit of rhythm; a few games to be fully fit. It's going better and better and there's no reason to end it. I think I'll be better after a few games."

The 20-year-old admitted to feeling nervous before his introduction against Sam Allardyce's side, but he revealed that the presence of countryman Patrice Evra continues to help his assimilation to life at his new club.

"It was great for him to finally play," said the midfielder. "It was disappointing for him not to take his chance but hopefully he’ll get many more here. I think he might get a little bit of stick for his miss. We can’t let him off for that!"

Minggu dini hari, 1 November 2009, hati ini rada-rada cemas melihat mandeknya serangan Setan Merah saat menjamu Blackburn Rovers di Old Trafford. berkali-kali upaya seolah buntu dan meski Berbatov berhasil membuat unggul 1-0, saya tetap tidak merasa puas. Harus ada perubahan. Dan sepertinya Sir Alex mendengar keinginan saya dan berjuta Mancunian lainnya. Seorang pemain plontos bernomor punggung 26 bersiap masuk dan sepertinya akan menggantikan Nani, yang saat itu memang tampil kurang memuaskan.

Lalu, teman-teman memberikan info bagaimana skill anak muda ini baik ketika di Bordeaux maupun saat di tim cadangan United. Rasa penasaran itu berlanjut ketika seorang teman mengabarkan performa menjanjikan dia saat membantu United mengalahkan Barnsley di Piala Carling.

Akhirnya, pemain ini melakukan debutnya di Liga. Saya tak henti-hentinya meyakini apa yang diomongkan saat ini. Satu solo run dari garis belakang pertahanan United berujung keluarnya bola dari lapangan membuat saya tertawa terpingkal-pingkal, begitu juga teman yang nonton bersama saya. Mungkin ini suatu perkenalan pikir saya saat itu. Dan tak hanya itu, saya seakan tersihir dengan gerak kaki dan visi bermainnya. Dua peluang bersih yang gagal dari dirinya masih membuat saya yakin akan dirinya. Akhirnya memang United menang 2-0 saat itu. Dan saya yakin, calon legenda Old Trafford akan lahir!

Dua hari berselang saat menjamu CSKA, lagi-lagi United dalam posisi sulit yang kali ini tertinggal 2-3. Hampir saja asa ini musnah melihat buruknya Setan Merah tampil saat itu. Sampai satu ketika pemain nomor 26 itu masuk menggantikan Federico Macheda. Sontak, di sisa sekitar 6 menit pertandingan, serangan berubah drastis. Trik-trik, pergerakan, passing anak muda ini dari sisi kiri begitu menyihir. Serangan United pun begitu hidup. Hasilnya, skor sama kuat 3-3! United lolos ke babak knock out Liga Champions.

Pemain United datang dan pergi. Namun tak ada yang benar-benar memberikan kesan pertama yang istimewa bagi saya pribadi seperti anak muda ini, yang bernama GABRIEL OBERTAN. Masih terlalu dini untuk menilai memang. Tapi saya sudah meyakini, masa depan dia adalah Legenda Old Trafford. Jika Giggs pensiun nanti, saya tak ragu untuk memilihnya mewarisi nomor 11 jika tidak dipensiunkan. Namanya akan terus dinyanyikan suporter United, semoga....

Minggu dini hari, 1 November 2009, hati ini rada-rada cemas melihat mandeknya serangan Setan Merah saat menjamu Blackburn Rovers di Old Trafford. berkali-kali upaya seolah buntu dan meski Berbatov berhasil membuat unggul 1-0, saya tetap tidak merasa puas. Harus ada perubahan. Dan sepertinya Sir Alex mendengar keinginan saya dan berjuta Mancunian lainnya. Seorang pemain plontos bernomor punggung 26 bersiap masuk dan sepertinya akan menggantikan Nani, yang saat itu memang tampil kurang memuaskan.

Pikiran lalu langsung melayang saat pemain kurus dan plontos ini diperkenalkan bersama Michael Owen dan Antonio Valencia di Carrington. Speaking to ManUtd.com for the first time since joining from Bordeaux, the French winger discusses his love for the English game, reveals how he's settled at OT, and outlines his plans to become a first-team regular...

It must have been frustrating getting your big move then having to sit on the sidelines. Are you pleased to finally be playing now?
After four months of just waiting and resting, I’ve been really looking forward to starting my career as a Manchester United player. I wanted to feel part of the squad, part of the group, and be involved in the games. So I’m feeling really good right now.

Saying that, did the time out help you to settle in England?
I think there were definitely some positives to it, and even though I was frustrated at not playing I tried to look at it in a positive way. In my disappointment, there were good things I could take from it. I got to know everybody at the club, I could begin to understand how things work here and get settled in England.

What are your early impressions of the club?
Manchester United has made a huge impression on me already. I knew it was a big club, of course. Bordeaux is a big club in France, but you come here and it is totally different. This is a world class club and it’s a totally different organisation. The quality of the players is different as well. Here there are only international players. Everything is quicker and the quality of the football is unbelievable.

Did you see your move to United coming or was it a surprise?
I knew United were interested because Jim Ryan (head of youth development) came to watch me play four years ago. I knew there was interest there but I didn’t expect the move to happen so early in my career. But I felt ready for it, I knew I was ready for the challenge and the change in my life. It was like a new beginning for me and I am just glad to be here and have the opportunity to play for this great club.

What are the main footballing differences between England and France?
The quality at United is higher than I experienced in France. Also the amount of contact, there are a lot more physical challenges than in France, and the speed of the game – it’s so fast. It's much slower in France, where you have time to look for space around you or pick out a pass. Here, everything is in a rush, because if you don’t rush then you will be tackled and lose the ball.


You seem to have the right attributes to cope with that…
I’ve always liked English football. When I was in France I would watch English football every weekend. And I think you're right, for my qualities I believe this is the best league in Europe for me. I’m quite fast and I like to attack and be in one v one situations with defenders.

What was it like making your debut at Old Trafford? What was going through your mind as you were about to come on?
I felt proud to be here and glad to get my first real injury out of the way. Obviously I’d played in the Reserves and enjoyed playing against Barnsley in the cup, but stepping out at Old Trafford is something else because I’ve never played in a stadium like that before. I was so excited and just couldn’t way to play and get on the pitch. It felt like the first step. I was a bit nervous at first, but after five minutes it felt like I’d been playing here for three years or something. The fans really get behind you and it’s a great sensation.

The fans have taken to you really quickly, chanting your name at matches…
I am very proud of that. It gives you a huge push when you are playing and you hear people singing your name. It’s like you have other forces behind you. It’s also made me feel very welcome here, and if I hear the fans singing my name I just want to give them something back by playing well and keep working hard for them.

And what do you hope to achieve at United?
At first I just want to be part of the squad, be in the group that travels to all the games, and get a few minutes in each game to begin with. Then, if I keep working hard and show what I can do, I have ambition. So, why not aim to be a regular in the team? I might need a year to achieve that, but I hope I can do it.

RISING French star Gabriel Obertan is putting Nani's United future under threat.
The surprise summer capture from Bordeauxcould prove to be a £3m Sir Alex Ferguson bargain buy.

Nani has struggled to convince Reds fans and critics that he can be an Old Trafford fixture since his £18m move from Sporting Lisbon in 2007.

The Portuguese winger was hoping Cristiano Ronaldo's exit might open the door for him but, despite 10 starts, he has not grasped his chance.

Now 20-year-old Obertan aims to leapfrog him after overcoming the back injury he arrived from France with.

Though former United defender and French legend Laurent Blanc was shocked that Fergie decided to take a punt on the Under-21 international, who was under him at Bordeaux, Obertan is starting to excite United supporters.

And, while Nani started against Blackburn and CSKA Moscow, he wasn't in the 18 on duty at Chelsea on Sunday and Obertan came on at Stamford Bridge with another impressive substitute cameo to add to his late show against CSKA last Tuesday.

"After four months of just waiting and resting, I've been really looking forward to starting my career as a Manchester United player," said Obertan.

Dibanding Nani, Obertan lebih disukai pelatih Alex Ferguson. Ia turun ketika MU dikalahkan Chelsea di Stamford Bridge.

Bahkan Obertan disebut-sebut sebagai pengganti Cristiano Ronaldo di masa depan.

GABRIEL OBERTAN has begged for the chance to become Cristiano Ronaldo's long-term successor at Manchester United.

The French starlet, 20, has impressed as a sub against the likes of CSKA Moscow, Blackburn and Chelsea this season.

Portuguese winger Nani has failed to prove he can fill the gap left by £80million countryman Ronaldo.

And the jury is still out on Antonio Valencia, who has produced a mixed bag since his £16m summer switch to Old Trafford from Wigan.

But having had a taste of first-team action, £3m buy Obertan is planning to make the wide role once occupied by Ronaldo his own within 12 months.

The former Bordeaux flier said: "Why not aim to be a regular in the team? I might need a year to achieve that but I hope I can do it.

"At first, I just want to be part of the squad and get a few minutes in each game.

"Then, if I keep working hard and show what I can do, I have ambition.

"I didn't expect this move to happen so early in my career. But I feel ready for it."

Obertan arrived at United with a long-term back injury which meant he did not feature in his first four months at the club.

But he is now itching to get going and, as a keen student of the English game back in his homeland, he believes he is perfectly suited to be a success over here.

When Gabriel Obertan joined Mancheser United in July, Laurent Blanc, his manager at Bordeaux, admitted his surprise that the Premier League champions had moved to secure his services.

After all, Obertan had spent the last few weeks of last season on loan at Lorient after failing to nail down a regular first team spot.

Yet four months into his Premier League career, the only surprise is that Obertan has not featured more after emerging as the most promising of the Old Trafford undercard during Wednesday's surprise Champions League reverse to Besiktas.

After David Bellion came and went without setting Old Trafford on fire, United fans had every right to be sceptical about the arrival of another young Frenchman.

While Danny Welbeck, Federico Macheda, Rafael da Silva and Darron Gibson failed to shine as United surrendered their 23-game unbeaten home run in Europe, Obertan's pace and trickery down the right delighted Sir Alex Ferguson on an otherwise night to forget for the United manager.

The Frenchman is only 20 yet possesses confidence beyond his tender years that bodes well for his future at the club.

Obertan covered just about every blade of grass and his delivery from the right was as impressive as his powerful bursts into the Besiktas danger area.

Having arrived in Manchester from Bordeaux just days after Cristiano Ronaldo had departed for Madrid, Obertan was touted, unfairly, as a replacement for the Portuguese superstar.

Although he shone on the right, he has also been used on the left but Obertan is keen to distance himself from comparisons with Ronaldo.

"I'm not Ronaldo's successor," said Obertan, who insists he has more to much offer. "I just try to be Gabriel Obertan and just work hard. There's no comparison possible for now.

"I tried to and want to do more. I've not scored yet or made an assist. I've had some good performances when I've come on, but I want to do more than that. I think I could do more. I really wish I could do more."

So, we get the message that Gabriel wants to do more - and Ferguson may be in the mood to give him the opportunity ot fulfil his wish and prove he is equipped for the English game.

Naturally, as a player schooled on the continent and another graduate from the impressive Clairefontaine finishing school outside Paris, questions have been asked as to whether Obertan can cut it in the hustle and bustle of the Premier League.

"I think it is better for me to play in England than France," added Obertan. "There is more space and the game is quicker."

Clearly, the player is in no doubt he can become a permanent fixture on the top-flight stage. So far, the evidence suggests he will be proved right.

ALEX FERGUSON heaped praise on his youngsters — despite their defeat to Besiktas last night.

The Manchester United boss put faith in the likes of Danny Welbeck, Federico Macheda and Gabriel Obertan for the Champions League clash.

But his experiment backfired as United crashed to a 1-0 loss, ending their 23-match unbeaten record at Old Trafford.

Ferguson insists the starlets should not be criticised for the performance.

He said: "I think that the values and trust we put in them by playing them, tells them how high we regard them — they're potentially top players.

"You can only judge them by the level of their improvement over the next few years.

"We know about their temprament — we certainly know about Welbeck and Macheda.

"Obertan has only just started at the club. He's had a long spell out with injury but the signs are good with him.

"The one thing we can't give them is experience, which is why they played in the match with Besiktas.

"Hopefully that will bring them on."

Gabriel Obertan insists he is not looking to become a replacement for Cristiano Ronaldo even though he is desperate to fill the same right-wing berth for Manchester United.

The France Under 21 international was handed his first Champions League start by Sir Alex Ferguson last night and was one of the few United players to emerge with any credit from the 1-0 defeat by Besiktas.

Obertan showed some neat touches at Old Trafford, and was not afraid to try a step-over or two either as he tried to put Besiktas on the back foot.

It was something of a throwback to Ronaldo's early days, even if some of the more outrageous tricks were missing.

Yet the £3million summer arrival from Bordeaux has no wish to be bracketed in the same company as Ronaldo, who went on to become the world's best player in 2008, scoring 42 goals as United won a Champions League and Barclays Premier League double, before moving to Real Madrid last summer for £80m.

'I am not Ronaldo's successor,' stated Obertan firmly. 'For now there is no comparison, I am just trying to be Gabriel Obertan. I have only been here for six months and I cannot do what he did in that time.'

Obertan is showing a pleasing willingness to learn. Towards the end of the first half last night his confidence did appear to suffer as a couple of intended moves broke down.

But as the game wore on, he looked the most likely United player to break Besiktas down and his direct running and ability to commit defenders is something Ferguson's team lacks when Ryan Giggs is not playing or Nani is having one of his frequent inconsistent days.

'I want to do more,' he said. 'I have not scored yet and I have not made an assist. I have put in some good performances but they have only been short appearances when I came on as a substitute.

'I want to do more than that and I think I could. That is what I am wishing for. If I get another chance, I know I will take it.'

In all probability, Obertan's next opportunity will come against Tottenham on Tuesday as last season's finalists meet for a place in the semi-finals of this year's Carling Cup.

It represents the first opportunity Obertan has to win a trophy since his arrival from France as a relative unknown on these shores. Even fellow countryman Patrice Evra needed to ask friends back home for some information on the 20-year-old.

The lack of knowledge was mainly due to a succession of injuries that hampered the youngster's progress. Indeed, he was forced to wait three months for his United debut as he needed intensive treatment on a long-standing back complaint.

Obertan admits he has some way to go before he can regard himself as being fully fit. But he insists he can make a bigger impact in the Premier League than he did in France.

'I am not fully match fit yet,' he revealed. 'I worked hard for four months and did weights and running, so I think I will be 100 per cent very soon. I just need some more match rhythm. The more I play the more that will come. I am just looking forward to getting a chance.

'It is certainly better for me to play in England than France because the game is quicker. I prefer it like that.'

French fledgling Gabriel Obertan is emerging as a candidate to take up the mantle of Old Trafford midfield maestro – from his role model Paul Scholes.

Obertan has given glimpses of his dazzling potential but Sir Alex Ferguson is excited by his potential in a central position.

GABRIEL Obertan might shy away from comparisons with Cristiano Ronaldo - but he is pretty keen on the Portuguese superstar's stepover routine.

With Ronaldo now at Real Madrid, Manchester United supporters are looking for a new hero to cheer.

After a delayed start to his Old Trafford career following a cut-price £3million summer move from Bordeaux, Obertan is now showing the Red Devils faithful the skills that made him one of Europe's most sought-after young players before his career was halted by injury.

The 20-year-old went on a few mazy runs last night after making his first Premier League start against Wolves.

And don't be surprised if the stepover routine Ronaldo carried out so mesmerically returns to the United menu in the months ahead.

"I learned to play football in the street with my friends," Obertan said.

"And when you play street football, the things you want to do are all the tricks, like nutmegs. My favourite is probably the stepover.

Obertan has now made nine appearances. Given his ability to get round defenders and force his way into the box, the chances are he will make a lot more before the season is over.

The France Under-21 star is yet to score, having infamously failed to convert a simple tap-in on his debut against Blackburn at the end of October.

"I hope I will score soon," he said.

"It is possible. I had those chances against Blackburn.

"I do have to work more on my finishing but I am confident it will come."

Gabriel Obertan has hit the ground running since making his long-awaited United debut in late October. The Frenchman is now hoping to make further progress, following his first Barclays Premier League start against Wolves...

So Gabriel, were you pleased with your first league start?
Yes, I'm quite happy. I just wanted to play my game and show my qualities, hopefully I did that. I felt I was better in the first half when I slowed down a bit.

Were you nervous?
Not really, because Pat [Evra] was behind me. He knows how I play so it's easier for me. He can place me when we're defending, it's very helpful. But really everyone was encouraging me.

Is English football what you expected?
Yes. It’s quick – there’s a lot of space behind defenders. And every team wants to win the game when they play. In France, sometimes the first thing the team wants to do is not lose. But here, they all want to win. That makes the game more open and you have more chances. Every game is difficult. Even in the [4-1] win against Portsmouth it was difficult. Every game is different, and each one is like a combat, it’s a fight.

Have you had to adapt your game?
Maybe a bit, but I think my qualities were made for this type of football. So it was quite easy to fit in here. I was built for English football.

Are there any players you’ve modelled your game on?
When I was younger I liked Thierry Henry… then I liked Kaka and Cristiano Ronaldo.

What's your favourite bit of trickery?

United have a tradition of wingers – are you an out-and-out winger?
I think for now I am a true winger. But maybe in the future I could play forward or striker. I like one-v-one – I’m quick and I like to run in behind defenders and create opportunities.

When teams put a lot of people behind the ball, does that make the winger’s job even more important?
Yes. I think wingers are very important in modern football. In the game against Besiktas [at OT in late November] it was quite difficult because all the players were like defenders. I think the winger’s role is important in that type of game.

You've already built up a good rapport with the fans...
I’m very pleased by the way they have supported me. When I hear them singing my name, the only thing I want to do is give them something back. It’s like a big boost behind you, like someone pushing you on to make that pass or score that goal. It’s inspiring.

You usually switch wings during the game. Is that something you’ve been told to do, or does it come naturally?
I just do it. If I have an opportunity to be efficient or help someone, I’ll do it. As long as the other winger wants to, I like to test the other full-back.

Will we see a first United goal soon?
I hope so! I think it’s possible. I had chances against Blackburn. I just have to work more on my finishing. I’m confident it will come though.

How will you celebrate when it does come?

What is it like training with the great players at United?
Very different than in France, because the quality is much higher and you have to adapt yourself to that. The game’s quicker, the passes are always good, so there’s no excuse or reason to complain. You just have to adapt yourself and be focused.

What are your goals between now and the end of the season?
Just to improve and do the best for the club. And score some goals, also.

What do you think United can achieve this season?
I think we have the team to win everything. I think we can challenge in every competition. We’re already in the semi-finals of the Carling Cup…

Any thoughts about making the French World Cup squad?
Not really. I’m in the Under-21s now, and I’m just focused on that and the club. But if I play well, you never know.

And your goals for the next 10 years?
I’ve not thought that far ahead so I don’t know yet. It seems like such a long time away, but Jim Ryan has said to me that a career goes so fast. My goals are just to win titles with Manchester United and play well here.

Agent denies reports bit-part Gabriel Oberton wants out of Manchester United

Gabriel Obertan's agent has dismissed reports the Manchester United winger is set to leave Old Trafford.

Reports have suggested Obertan, who has struggled for playing time since his summer arrival from Bordeaux, is set for a loan move with Turkish outfit Fenerbahce said to be interested.

However, his agent insists the 20-year-old is staying put.

'He's staying at Manchester United,' Karim Djaziri told L'Equipe.

Obertan moved to the Barclays Premier League for a reported £3million last summer, signing a four-year deal with the English champions.

The France Under-21 international has made just one league start and has not featured for United since the FA Cup defeat to Leeds on January 3.

Gabriel Obertan is hoping his hard work in training will lead to a recall to the Manchester United team for the final games of the season.

The French winger joined United on a four-year contract from Bordeaux last summer, although his debut was delayed until October due to a back injury.

He has made a total of 12 appearances for the Red Devils, but has started only once in the Premier League and has yet to score for the club.

Obertan has not figured for the first team since the 3-1 defeat at Everton in February, but was on the bench for Sunday's 0-0 draw at Blackburn Rovers.

The 21-year-old scored the winner for the reserves against Liverpool on Tuesday night in front of Sir Alex Ferguson and hopes that will boost his prospects of featuring in the remaining four matches of the campaign.

"It is good for the confidence to score some goals and good when the manager is watching the game," Obertan told MUTV.

"There are four matches left in the Premier League so it would be nice to be able to have a few minutes on the pitch.

"It's been a bit difficult the last couple of months, but I've worked hard with the reserves and in training, and it is paying off."

Meanwhile, reports in France have claimed Obertan could be loaned back to a Ligue 1 club next season, with St Etienne leading the hunt ahead of Nancy, Paris St Germain and Rennes.

Obertan’s agent, Karim Djaziri, revealed: “Gabriel is going to stay with Manchester United next season.

Meanwhile, Portuguese side Sporting Lisbon hope to trump rivals Benfica in the race to sign Rangers keeper Allan McGregor.

And they could try to use defender Tonel – a long-time target of Smith – as part of a deal.

Champions Benfica are keen on 28-year-old McGregor, however Sporting have also made contact with the keeper’s agent Scott Hume via a third party.

Now the battle for the £5m-rated Scotland international could intensify before the player returns to Murray Park for pre-season training on July 5.

Hume said: “I was contacted by an agent who wanted to know the terms for an eventual transfer. He told me a lot about Sporting’s interest, but he told me that Benfica may also have an eye on Allan.

“It would be a great challenge in his career.”

The France U21 international has struggled to break into United's first team since his £3m arrival from Bordeaux.

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson heaped praise on Gabriel Obertan after the French winger steered his side to their second successive pre-season tour victory.

The 21-year-old capped an impressive all-round display by hitting the winner against Philadelphia Union in the 76th minute of the pre-season warm-up at Lincoln Financial Field.

The strike was Obertan's first in United's colours since joining from Bordeaux last year.

Obertan's debut season at Old Trafford was marred by injury but he looked full of running against the Union and broke the stiff resistance of the Major League Soccer outfit with a neat finish after being played in by teenage striker Danny Welbeck.

Ferguson said: "Goals always help players of course, and when they are forwards in particular. There is a goal in Gabby, there is no question of that.

"The best aspect of his goal was his run, the timing of his run and the timing of the pass and the weight of the pass. It made it a really good goal. He has taken it well."

Ferguson started the match with a youthful line-up. In addition to both Welbeck and Obertan, the United boss put his faith in Jonny Evans, Fabio, Federico Macheda and Tom Cleverley.

Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes added some experience to proceedings, and Ferguson called on Dimitar Berbatov and Darren Fletcher in the second half in a bid to break down a stubborn Union side.

The inclusion of Berbatov almost brought a second goal but the Bulgarian was unfortunate to see his late effort smack the underside of the crossbar.

Ferguson was nevertheless pleased that his side were able to build on their 3-1 victory against Celtic in their opening tour match on Friday.

He said: "You need pre-season games, they are absolutely essential. You need them to get your timing and rhythm and your breathing right.

"It was the sort of game we probably needed. The Union were really powerful and aggressive, got to the ball quickly and made it difficult for us. They had a few shots on goal. They were better than I expected.

"We increased the tempo in the second half and did a little better then. It was a good game for us. They were very good opponents, I thought they did really well."

It was United's first visit to the stadium since 2004 and the match had the feel of a cup tie thanks to an enthusiastic crowd of 44,213.

Ferguson said: "There was a more United atmosphere for us tonight.

"In the six years since we we were last here there is more appreciation of the game from the fans in what is happening on the field.

"It is an indication of the progress there is in American football."

Philadelphia - Winger Manchester United, Gabriel Obertan berhasil menampilkan permainan impresif dalam laga pra musim melawan Philadelphia Union. Sir Alex Ferguson pun melayangkan pujian buat pemain mudanya itu.

MU kembali meraih kemenangan di laga tur pra-musim. Menghadapi Philadelphia dalam laga yang dihelat Kamis (22/7/2010) pagi WIB, skuad 'Setan Merah' sukses menumbangkan lawannya 1-0 lewat gol tunggal Obertan.

Di dalam laga itu, pemain berpaspor Prancis ini tampil memukau. Obertan sempat beberapa kali melancarkan serangan yang mengancam gawang tim asal Amerika Serikat tersebut kendati golnya baru lahir pada menit 76 berkat kerjasamanya dengan Danny Welbeck.

Gol ini bukan hanya gol kemenangan buat MU. Namun, ini juga gol pertama Obertan di skuad senior Red Devils mengingat sejak dibeli dari Bordeaux pada 2009 ia baru tampil tujuh kali dan lebih banyak dimainkan di skuad reserve.

"Ada naluri pencetak gol di dalam diri Gabby, tidak perlu diragukan," puji Fergie yang dikutip dari situs resmi MU.

"Aspek terbaik dalam cara menyerang dia adalah kecepatan larinya, timing dan penyelesaian dari operan (Welbeck). Itu pergerakan yang baik dan dia menyelesaikan dengan baik."

Meskipun akhirnya memenangkan pertandingan tapi secara keseluruhan MU cukup mengalami kesulitan menghadapi Philadelphia. Fergie percaya laga ujicoba ini akan memberi manfaatkan timnya yang berhasrat merebut gelar juara liga dari tangan Chelsea musim depan.

"Ini adalah pertandingan yang mungkin kami perlukan. Mereka terlihat kuat dan agresif dan memperoleh bola secara cepat dan menyulitkan kami," imbuh manajer Skotlandia itu.

"Kami meningkatkan tempo permainan di babak kedua dan bermain lebih baik dari mereka. Ini adalah game yang bagus dan mereka (tim saya) sudah melakukan yang terbaik," tuntas dia.

Manchester United winger Gabriel Obertan's ankle injury isn't serious.

Obertan was forced from the field during United's thumping of the MLS Allstars last night. He is expected to be out for two weeks.

On the performance, United manager Sir Alex Ferguson said: "The thing I was looking for was our possession of the ball. We were much better at that.

"Through that we had a good tempo to our game, good rhythm to our play. It was a really good performance by us. We got a good start to the match and the team were confident for this challenge."

Gabriel Obertan is going green in a bid to become a regular Red. Manchester United’s £3m summer 2009 buy from Bordeaux isn’t taking the environmentally friendly route to establish himself at Old Trafford – he’s eating more vegetables!

The 21-year-old French winger is devouring his legumes and working out to put some muscle in his quest to make his Old Trafford breakthrough.

Just 12 months ago, Obertan was the unknown purchase in Sir Alex Ferguson’s summer package.

But a back injury hindered his progress and he ended up with just five starts and eight first team sub appearances on his CV. Now he’s ready to make a fight of it.

“I was quite pleased with my first season in the end. I started some games and came on as a substitute as well in a few matches,” says Gabby.

“But the difficult thing for me was that I arrived at the club with an injury. I had the back problem so was out really for five months.

“That is not an ideal situation when you come to a new club. I was just waiting and watching other players get their chances.

“I don’t have any problems with the back now so it is an important season for me. I want to really prove I can be a part of this team. I want to play as much as possible.

“I have had a pre-season behind me unlike last summer and I feel right now. I feel I am ready for this challenge ahead of me.

“The second season is always when you really have to prove what you can do. I have shown a little bit in games but I don’t think it is anywhere near enough. I aim to prove myself now this campaign.

Obertan efficiency

“I have to be more efficient in the last third. The gaffer has spoken to me about that. I know what my weakness is and I have to work on it. It is all about the accuracy of my service. I need to get my season started now.”

Obertan believes he can now cope with the extra physical game this side of the Channel.

“The English game is so much more physical and quicker. I was used to having time on the ball in France,” he added.

“I have become bigger physically in order to cope with it. I have been working out. I felt I needed to be stronger to face up to the contact.

“Gym work and the way I eat has given me better body strength. The nutritionist and the work in the gym has really helped me.

“I eat even more pasta now than ever. I never used to be fond of vegetables but now I eat a lot of them. I needed to eat more greens.

“It has helped put on extra muscle. We do a fat count and that hasn’t gone up but I am bigger so it must be all muscle I’ve added.

“I did boxing work and speed work in the gym as well. It has all made me better equipped to push myself forward at United.

“There are lot of players at the club and new players have arrived this summer.

“But the competition isn’t a problem for me. I will work harder and harder to make sure I am on the pitch.

“When the coach is ready to use me I will be ready.”

Preston North End manager Darren Ferguson has dismissed reports he could bring in Manchester United winger Gabriel Obertan on loan.

Ferguson currently has Matt James and Josh King on loan from his father's club and has also been linked with a move for Obertan.

The Frenchman was in attendance at Preston's 1-0 win over Portsmouth at the weekend and has yet to feature for United this term.

However, Ferguson has not even discussed the possibility of signing the 21-year-old and doubts the former Bordeaux youngster is available for loan.

"That's one we've not even spoken about," said Ferguson in the Lancashire Evening Post.

"He's in their first-team squad, there's no chance."

Meanwhile, United youngster King is unsure if he will extend his loan spell at Deepdale beyond the initial three-month agreement after scoring once in four appearances so far for Preston.

King told the club's official website: "It has been going good and I've enjoyed it. I've only been here three weeks, but I have enjoyed it.

"It's too early to say whether or not I would extend the loan I will just have to see how it goes, but I'm enjoying it at the moment so we will wait and see."

MANCHESTER - Cedera parah yang membekap Antonio Valencia nampaknya tak akan terlalu mengganggu performa Manchester Unietd. Sebab, mereka telah memiliki pemain pengganti yang tak kalah tangguh, yakni Gabriel Obertan.

United diprediksi tak akan diperkuat Valencia hingga Februari tahun depan menyusul patah tibia dan fibula pada pergelangan kaki kirinya saat United ditahan Glasgow Ranger di Liga Champions, 15 September silam. “Berlatih dengan pemain seperti Ryan Giggs, Scholes dan sejumlah superstar lain yang ada dalam skuad, banyak membantu saya mengembangkan permainan. After scoring in Champions League confidence returns to winger

Gabriel Obertan believes he is ready to unleash his best form for club and country after he was recalled to the France Under 21 squad.

Obertan, 21, was plucked from obscurity when Manchester United signed him from Bordeaux in 2009, following a loan spell at Lorient.

A serious back injury restricted his impact at Old Trafford and he was plagued by self-doubt while sidelined.

Yet, the player has enjoyed a surge in confidence after scoring in the Champions League against Bursaspor early this month.

United

"When I came to United I knew that it would be very difficult, I didn't join an average Premier League club," Obertan told L'Equipe.

"I came from nowhere, from a loan at Lorient that didn't really go that smoothly, so I could not expect to come here and replace key members of the team straight away.

"After my injury, I had a lot of talks with the coaches and Ole Gunner Solskjaer (former reserve team manager). They told me to relax as I have the quality needed to be a success here and that I shouldn't doubt myself.

"When you see players like Scholes or Giggs working hard in training and competing with the young players, it spurs you on.

"And when Giggs, who plays in the same position as me, gives you advice, you know you will improve."

Goal

The strike against Bursaspor has also been noted by Sir Alex Ferguson, who along with the rest of the squad and coaches, is beginning to see the confidence of Obertan blossom.

And the young winger, who felt a bit like the forgotten man at Old Trafford, is determined to get them all talking about him again.

"After my goal against Bursaspor, things are really starting to look up for me. Sir Alex Ferguson has been talking to me a lot more too and giving me more advice," he added.

"All that I went through has helped me to build and develop my character. Two months ago I was down in the dumps because I was injured and thought no-one cared about me anymore.

"I don't want to feel like that anymore and I want to repay the people that had the faith to bring me here.":thumbup:

You’ve had more opportunities in the first team this season. Are you pleased with how it’s going?
I am because I’ve worked hard since the summer. I was injured in pre-season but now I feel really good. I’ve worked in training and I’m seeing the results on the pitch. Last year I was in the Reserves more, and it was a case of adapting to the English game and life in England, and getting over injuries. It was frustrating at times, but I learnt a lot, with Ole Solskjaer and Warren Joyce giving me good advice.

Did not being regularly involved in the first team make you more determined to get there?
That’s exactly right. Without being disrespectful, it was tough in the Reserves because my target has always been to play in the first team. When I look back, it makes me work even harder to get in the team more often.

You’re physically much stronger this season…
After pre-season I got injured and I wanted to make the most of my absence. I worked really hard in the gym because it’s a really important attribute to be physical in the English league. I had six weeks away from the pitch and I wanted to get some benefit out of it. Now I feel stronger, I can handle myself much better. My legs feel stronger, I feel faster, everything seems to be coming together. It definitely helped.

What else have you learnt at United?
The biggest improvement I’ve made is on the mental side. It was frustrating at times in my first year if I was out injured, unable to train or in the Reserves. There were lots of obstacles and it can be easy to let that get you down if you aren’t mentally strong. I’ve progressed a lot in that sense. Now I approach disappointments with a much more positive attitude. The game against West Ham is a good example. Before coming to Manchester I might have let that really get to me, but now I am just focused on my next game.

Has Patrice Evra been a big influence on you?
He has been absolutely key in my adaptation to life in England and at Manchester United. He is like a big brother to me. He is always around if I have a problem – I just have to call him – or if it’s on the pitch I can speak to him. We talk all the time. As well as the coaches and the manager, he’s the most important person to me at the club. He always gives advice after games, he is objective and if I’ve not played well he’ll tell me straight, which helps in aspects of my game that I need to improve. Even if I had a problem with something in life in general, he’s always willing to help. That’s important for a young player.

You’re one of a number of young players at the club, is there are a lot of camaraderie and togetherness with the young players?

Do you feel part of a new generation of young players emerging at United?
Definitely. I think so. There are a lot of talented young players here with very good qualities. We just need a bit more time and a bit more experience, it’s just a matter of getting minutes on the pitch.

At the same time, do you think the current blend of young players and older, more experienced, players can be successful now, not just in the future?
I think it’s the perfect mix in a lot of ways because on one side we’ve got the experience of Giggsy and Scholesy, even players like Rio, Vidic, Evra, and then on the other side there are the young players, who give 100 per cent on the pitch and bring lots of enthusiasm. Hopefully we have the balance right to be successful now and in the future.

You’ve played as a second striker and as a winger. Do you have a preference for either position?
I’ve always liked playing on the wing – left or right, it doesn’t matter. Playing behind the striker is a new position for me, but I like it because you have more liberty to move around than you do on the wing. You can get involved in the game a lot more. That might end up being my final position, but right now I am happy playing out wide… or anywhere, I just want to play!

When I was young it was Rivaldo and Thierry Henry. I watched him for the national team and when he was here in England. He scored a lot of goals and he was a very modern attacking player. I am trying to take something from his game. Like me, when Henry started out he was a winger. Then he became a striker because he loved scoring goals. I am trying to score more and be more efficient in front of goal.

Gabriel Obertan telah mengajukan permohonan transfer kepada kubu Manchester United pada Senin (31/1) kemarin.

Daily Mail menyebut Obertan, yang didatangkan dengan harga £3 juta dari Girondins Bordeaux satu setengah tahun lalu, mulai ragu dengan peluangnya mendapatkan posisi reguler di tim inti The Red Devils.

"Gabriel Obertan's agent has rejected reports that the player has handed in a transfer request at Manchester United.

Reports emerged on Tuesday that French winger Obertan had handed in a written transfer request because he doubted he could make the grade at Old Trafford.

The 21-year-old has struggled to make an impact at United since arriving from Bordeaux in the summer of 2009.

The France Under 21 international has made just 14 appearances for United this season and he started last weekend's FA Cup clash at Southampton.

Gabriel Obertan has stunned Manchester United by handing in a transfer request.

Obertan, a £3million signing from Bordeaux 18 months ago, is said to doubt whether he can make the grade at Old Trafford.

Manchester United midfielder Gabriel Obertan admits he is still in the dark about a loan move to Lille for next season.

Talk in France has suggested that the 22-year-old will soon join up with Rudi Garcia’s men on a season-long loan deal having failed to yet make the breakthrough at Old Trafford.

But Obertan himself can neither confirm or deny the reports and is unsure where his future lies.

"I will not be loaned to Lille, for now", Obertan told France Football.

"I should know if Manchester wants to loan me, and if they want to [loan me] to Lille. For now, I do not know."

Obertan featured just ten times for United last season and has struggled to force his way into Sir Alex Ferguson’s first team since joining from Bordeaux in 2009.

The Frenchman is under contract at Old Trafford until 2013.

Keyakinan itu disampaikan agennya, Karim Djaziri. Hal tersebut sekaligus membantah rumor terkait pemain asal Prancis. Pasalnya, Obertan sudah diincar sejumlah klub Ligue 1 Prancis karena jarang dimainkan oleh Sir Alex Ferguson. Musm lalu, dia hanya tiga kali dimainkan.

Juara Ligue 1 Lille sudah menyatakan ketertarikannya merekrut Oberton. Pemain berusia 22 ini diproyeksikan menggantikan Gervinho yang dikabarkan pindah ke Arsenal.

Klub lain, Saint Etienne, juga berharap bisa mendapatkan mantan pemain Bordeaux ini. Hanya, Djaziri menegaskan belum ada satu pun tawaran dari klub Prancis.

Ya emang sudah waktunya cabut. Umur 22 tahun tapi masih sering tampil di reserve. Musim ini (dan mungkin musim depan juga) kesempatannya tipis klo ngelihat isi skuad United baik di winger atau striker. Lebih baik posisinya diberikan ke morrison atau will keane aja yang lebih muda dan rasanya lebih potensial.

Sukses buat obertan. Jangan lupa, jangan maen bagus klo lawan United, tapi menggila klo lawan yang laen ya :P

Ya mungkin kemampuan dia lumayan. Mungkin bisa aja Fergie pake opsi meminjamkan dia tapi perlu juga dipertimbangkan keinginan obertan-nya. Januari kemaren dia disebutkan ingin dijual kan. Buat aku itu dah cukup indikasi dia nggak betah hanya jadi pelapis. Klo dia hanya dipinjamkan kan sama aja nggantung dia dan mungkin dia juga kurang sreg. GABRIEL Obertan says he has a new lease of life since swapping Old Trafford for St James’ Park – as he revels in the knowledge that he will be one of Newcastle United’s key men this campaign.

On a day of more good news on Tyneside, Jonás Gutiérrez penned a new four-year contract – while wing colleague Obertan spoke of his delight at finally getting a chance to showcase his ability consistently.

Pegged as an under-achiever at Manchester United after failing to consolidate early promise for the Red Devils, Obertan admits that the pressure on him was “unbelievable” at times during an up and down spell in the North West.

Barely able to put a foot wrong for fear of slipping down Sir Alex Ferguson’s midfield pecking order, the former France Under-21 international felt that his career was in danger of stalling.

He jumped at the chance to join Newcastle in the summer, though, and is benefiting from playing under a manager who will persevere with him through a few fluctuations in form.

Obertan was devastating at times during the comfortable 3-1 defeat of Blackburn on Saturday, posting his best display since his £3.25million move from Manchester United in the summer.

His confident running at the Rovers defence was a far cry from a timid display at QPR earlier in the month, a performance that betrayed his lack of sharpness and confidence in those early weeks of the season.

Obertan admits it has taken him a few weeks to get up to peak condition – but feels there is much more to come from him as the season progresses.

“I knew I might not be great in the first couple of games because you are getting your fitness back up and still learning a new way of playing with new team-mates,” he said.

“I thought it would take four or five games to get into the rhythm of a new team and also to get physically fit too. Saturday was my best game so far against Blackburn – if I can influence any game then that is great.

“The way I am approaching things here is totally different. If you don’t play that well here, you know there may be another chance for you. It won’t be like Manchester where the pressure is unbelievable, you’re battling every week just to get on the bench and one bad performance may see you out of the team for a month or two months.

“There is pressure here, of course, but to have a manager who sees you as an important first-team player is a big thing. It is a big difference for me and it will help my game.

United head to Wolves on Saturday with morale soaring following their flying start to the season – but Obertan is singing from the same hymn sheet as Alan Pardew when it comes to complacency.

Newcastle have enjoyed their best start to the season since 1994 but Mick McCarthy’s side are cut from a similar cloth to Pardew’s team and any drop in concentration or intensity will cost United in the Black Country.

Obertan insists United cannot be lured into a false sense of security by results so far.

“The team is doing well but it is important that we continue to focus and we don’t allow ourselves to look at the league and think we have arrived Wolves is the next game and we must concentrate on that,” he said.

While Obertan looks forward, so too does Argentina international Gutiérrez – who is now contracted to United until 2016.

Boss Pardew hailed his consistency as a key reason for his new deal reward, which left Gutiérrez feeling “proud”.

“Jonás is an integral part of the future of Newcastle United and we are delighted to have signed a new contract with him,” the Newcastle boss said.

“As a seasoned international player, he adds a different dimension to our play when he is on the field and is a huge asset to us.

“Jonás can turn a game in an instant, he has marvellous ball skills, a terrific work rate and in my time here, has hardly missed a game.

“That’s the sort of consistency, fitness and performance wise, that a manager looks for in a player.”

Newcastle winger Gabriel Obertan is relishing going back to Manchester United this weekend with his new club.

Obertan left Old Trafford for St James' Park in the summer after a disappointing spell with Sir Alex Ferguson's troops.

The Frenchman, who has missed Newcastle's last two games with a toe injury, is hopeful of being fit to feature against his old club on Saturday

"It'll be a great feeling to be back at Old Trafford - hopefully we'll win there," Obertan told the Evening Chronicle.

"I spent two amazing years there, so it'll be great to be on the pitch at Old Trafford again, to go back there and see friends I was with for two years.

"Hopefully, we'll get a good result there - it would be really, really good.

"It's all about Newcastle getting a good result now."

Confident

Newcastle suffered their first Premier League defeat of the season at Manchester City last weekend, but Obertan believes they can bounce back by getting a positive result at Old Trafford.

"So far, we have played some great football," added Obertan.

"Our confidence is really high, and there's no reason why we can't go there and get a point, or even three, if we play like we have before."
