Charity game excites boss

The boss relishes the return of some Treble heroes to Old Trafford...
United Relief Live next Saturday, 1 May, promises to be a great day out. Are you looking forward to it?
Yes, I am, because many of the players from our 1999 team are going to be there. I think it will be a very special occasion. I’m hoping for a good attendance. We’ve got a great fan base, and the fact we’re not playing until the next day, at Sunderland, may help. We’re staging this charity game for all the right reasons and I’m sure the fans will want to come and remember the great times we had with players like Cole, Yorke, Stam and Johnsen.
It'll be great to see Cole and Yorke at OT again. How good were they in 1999?
They were fantastic, especially that season when they scored 52 goals between them. I think they were the best in Europe at the time, they were unbelievable. It was a partnership that just took off, immediately. I don’t know why, the chemistry or something just clicked between the two of them but it developed into an unbelievable partnership. They were so effective I found difficulty, great difficulty, in keeping Sheringham and Solskjaer happy. I was fortunate to have four great strikers, even if it sometimes created headaches for me!
Are you hoping the event will raise lots of money for charity?
That's the main object. The club does fantastic work through the Foundation and our link-up with UNICEF. I think the event will bring in a lot of money for a good cause.

Jaap relishing Red return

It’s just over nine years since Jaap Stam last trod the hallowed turf at Old Trafford and he’s relishing the opportunity to pull on the red shirt once more at United Relief...
I can't wait to come back to Old Trafford on Saturday - it's something I've really been looking forward to. I loved my time at United and I’m sure I’ll get that same buzz when I pull on the shirt again. I still remember how it felt when you stepped out of the tunnel and saw the crowd and it was always a great feeling.
My time at United was very special, we won a lot of trophies as a team and I grew as a player and a person. It’s difficult to pick out a favourite Old Trafford moment, but winning the league in the three seasons I was here was unbelievable and the days when we were presented with the trophy in front of the fans definitely stand out.
I still play football for a local side in Holland, but the level is very low – I play more for the beers after games rather than the football! I've been coaching at Dutch First Division side FC Zwolle and I sometimes join in with mini games in training.
I just want to go out there on Saturday and do my best, enjoy the experience and help United win of course!

Poll to pull some surprises

Former top-flight referee Graham Poll will be back at his favourite ground on Saturday to take charge of the United Relief game and has promised the crowd a few surprises.
A United XI, featuring no fewer than six Treble winners and a host of famous fans, will run out at Old Trafford against The Rivals, a team made up of ex-opposition players and supporters, including former Liverpool pair Ian Rush and Peter Beardsley and comedian (and City fan) Jason Manford. Poll will be taking charge of proceedings.
"We’ve got a few surprises planned for the day, which the crowd should enjoy," he told the United Relief matchday programme.
"I used to be known for not giving penalties for either team at Old Trafford, but you might see a couple on Saturday!
“Old Trafford was always my favourite ground to referee at and I was lucky enough to cover more than 30 games there. It'll be great to be back this weekend."
As well as watching club legends and famous fans in action, supporters will be treated to performances from a number of chart-toppers during a pre-match concert. Pop princesses The Saturdays will be playing live before kick-off, as will rapper Tinchy Stryder, indie band The Hoosiers and legendary crooner Tony Christie. Britain’s Got Talent dance troop Flawless will also be on hand to entertain the crowd.

McGuinness: Don't laugh at us!

TV funnyman Paddy McGuinness, famed for hit shows Phoenix Nights and Max And Paddy’s Road To Nowhere, shares his hopes and fears for United Relief...
How much are you looking forward to representing The Rivals on Saturday?
It’s a dream come true – it’s just a pity it’s at Old Trafford! No, I’m really looking forward to it. As a football fan, you don’t get the chance to play in a big stadium very often. It’ll be amazing to see it from the players’ point of view, watching the families cheering on.
So is a trip to OT a big day out for a Bolton Wanderers fan?
Yes. Although I’m one of the few Bolton fans who likes to watch United matches. I watch all the big clubs and as a fan you have to appreciate the way they play.
What will be your pre-match snack of choice?
I’ll be too nervous to eat anything! Maybe I’ll eat one of those energy bars so I look like I’m calm and sporty. But I’ll probably just go for a Twix.
What’s your score prediction?
I really would like to say it’s going to be 3-2 to us, but I think it’ll be 5-2 to them. Andrew Cole will score first, I reckon. I wouldn’t put any money on it yet though – I’ll see what the mood is in the dressing room just before the match.
Do you have a message for the United team?
Please don’t laugh at us!

Six Treble-winning heroes will return to the Old Trafford turf on Saturday 1 May 2010, to play in a charity match for Sport Relief and MU Foundation.
Andrew Cole, Denis Irwin, Ronny Johnsen, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Jaap Stam and Dwight Yorke will form the nucleus of the Manchester United XI, coached by fellow Reds legend and ex-Reading boss Steve Coppell. The opposition will be provided by The Rivals, another pro/celebrity XI guided by former Oldham, Everton and Man City manager Joe Royle.
Kicking off at 15:30, the match will form the centrepiece of United Relief Live - a fun day out for the family that will also feature live music from The Saturdays, The Hoosiers and Tinchy Stryder.
Solskjaer said: “It’s amazing to think that great night at the Nou Camp was over 10 years ago. United Relief Live is a great chance for a generation of fans too young to remember 1999 to come to Old Trafford and see us play.
"Also, the quality of the acts performing and the fact it’s a Bank Holiday weekend should make it a fantastic family occasion.”

Zidane on his way to Old Trafford
APRIL 22, 2010
Zinedine Zidane is coming to Old Trafford.
The legendary French international will top the bill at a star-studded match in June for Soccer Aid.
Zidane retired in 2006 but the former three times World Player of the Year will return for his first visit to Old Trafford since 2003.
Seven years ago next week the 1998 World Cup and 2000 European Championship winner was part of the Galactico Real Madrid side who, though losing a sensational 4-3 semi final, knocked United out of the Champions League on aggregate.
Zidane, who also played at Old Trafford for Juventus, will be part of an illustrious celebrity line-up for Soccer Aid including Robbie Williams, Gordon Ramsay, Ricky Hatton and ex-United stars Teddy Sheringham and Henrik Larsson.
The match will take place at Old Trafford on Sunday June 6.

One of the club's most decorated servants will lead a Reds XI out on Saturday at United Relief to take on a team of rivals players and fans...
So Denis, how much are you looking forward to playing alongside some old friends on Saturday?
It’ll be great to be back amongst the lads. I see Coley [Andy Cole] quite a bit because we both do work for the club together and I bump into Yorkie [Dwight Yorke] once a year on the golf course! I haven’t seen Jaap [Stam] since he left and it’s been a while since I last saw Ronny [Johnsen] and Quinton [Fortune] so it’ll be great to catch up.
And you’re captain for the day…I know I can’t believe it! I’m not sure who nominated me, but it’s always great to captain a United side. The most important thing is we’re all here to support a great cause and hopefully everyone will have a really enjoyable day.
Do you expect there to be any nerves amongst the celebrities?
Nah, they should be okay. It’s a great opportunity for them to play on the hallowed turf, but the one thing the celebs on both teams will find out pretty quickly is just how big the Old Trafford pitch really is. It’s therefore important not to use up too much energy too soon.
It might be friendly, but it’s all about winning isn’t it?!
Of course! Whenever footballers get together that competitive edge always comes out and we definitely want to win. We’ve got great experience and the lads are still in good shape. Hopefully home advantage and the pace we have will see us through.

Celebrity Rivals Win United Relief

Over 35,000 Manchester United fans raised money for Sports Relief at Old Trafford on Saturday afternoon, as past and celebrity Reds took to the field in aid of charity, playing past and present rivals. Music and entertainment was an eye-catcher before the game, as the rivals ran-out winners on penalties in a thrilling game !
Rapper and more importantly United supporter, Tinchy Stryder, kick-started the day, and also played for The Reds in the game. London band The Hoosiers, girl group sensation The Saturdays and legendary crooner Tony Christie all entertained the crowd in the pre-match concert.
Soon after, the game kicked-off with names such as Jaap Stam, Ronny Johnsen, Andy Cole and Dwight Yorke back in the colours of Red, joined by celebrity United fans Ronan Keating, X-Factor finalist Olly Murs and Max Beesley to take on a team made-up of rival ex-players and fans - which included Ian Rush, Peter Beardsley and comedian Jason Manford.
The United side were very unlucky not to go into the interval leading by a few goals, as ex-Chelsea keeper Dave Beasant denied the likes of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Dwight Yorke. Unfortunately The Reds couldn't sustain the pressure in the second half, as the Rivals scored twice in quick succession through Ralf Little and Ugo Ehiogu, both firing past goalie, yes goalie, Clayton Blackmore !
But Ehiogu then scored an own goal to give the home side renewed hope, and Quinton Fortune struck in 'Fergie time' to send the tie into penalties. However, Ricky Whittle could not complete the stunning comeback, as he missed the crucial penalty for United, the rivals won 5-4 on peno's... a fantastic day nonetheless.

Jaap Stam, Ronny Johnsen, Andy Cole, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Clayton Blackmore, Quinton Fortune and Dwight Yorke played for United in a Charity game for United Relief today.
Ralf Little put the Rivals 1-0 up after scoring past Blackmore, who bizarrely was playing in goal. Former Villa and Boro defender, Ugo Ehiogu, made it 2-0.
However, Ehiogu scored an own goal before Quinton Fortune scored an injury time equaliser to make it 2-2.
A penalty shoot-out ensued, after Sir Bobby Charlton had set the tone with a half-time penalty kick, but the Rivals won 5-4 in the end, with Ricky Whittle missing the crucial penalty for United.
Other players present included Ian Rush, Peter Beardsley, Dave Beasant, John Beresford, Austin Healy, Max Beasley, Ronan Keating, Jason Manford and Tim Lovejoy.
