• The Hamburg Arena stands on the site of two previous stadia in the city, the first of them the Bahrenfelder Stadium which opened in 1925.

• The venue was rebuilt between 1951 and 1953 to become the Volksparkstadion, with many of the building materials coming from the ruins of Eimsbuttel, a Hamburg district ravaged by bombing during the Second World War.

• The 'People's Park' hosted games at the 1974 FIFA World Cup finals and the 1988 UEFA European Championship but was showing its age by the 1990s, when it was decided to demolish it and start again.

• Work began in 1998, with the whole stadium rotated 90 degrees to take full advantage of natural light, while the athletics facilities were abandoned to bring the stands closer to the pitch.

• A concert venue as well as a football stadium, the new arena hosted five games at the 2006 World Cup finals, including eventual winners Italy's 3-0 quarter-final success against Ukraine.

Fulham: The unexpected finalists
PL.com - Sat 01 May 2010

We track Fulham's magnificent rise from near extinction in 1996 to the Europa League final in 2010.

"Stand up if you still believe, stand up if you still believe." It rang out like a mantra from each corner of Craven Cottage, followed by the clatter of plastic chairs as every home supporter sprang to their feet, writes Claire Harmer.

Fulham's hopes of making the Europa League final had been dealt a sickening blow. In any other circumstances, Whites fans might have been able to appreciate the quite beautiful strike from Hamburg's Mladen Petric. But not now. Not with their European final at stake.

Even at 1-0 down, with Hamburg scoring that all important away goal in the semi-final second leg, Fulham fans really did still believe they could get to the final. After all, in a quite incredible season, they had come back from behind to beat the mighty Juventus, seen off holders Shaktar Donetsk and brushed aside Bundesliga champions Wolfsburg. And that was just in the Europa League.

In the Barclays Premier League, they had comfortably beaten champions Manchester United 3-0 and outplayed Liverpool with a 3-1 win.

Dire Straits
Fourteen years ago, the thought of Fulham beating just one of those teams would have been laughable. Not even in the dreams of the most diehard fan. A year before multi-millionaire Mohamed Al Fayed's takeover in 1997, the club was in dire straits.

Bottom of the football league, with home gates averaging only 4000 and just seven full time members of staff, the club faced the prospect of non-league football and even the possibility of extinction.

Just months prior to Harrods owner Al Fayed's arrival, the situation had started to improve, with the team securing promotion for the first time in 15 years. Al Fayed promised top-flight football within five seasons and there was even mention of Fulham becoming the Manchester United of the South.

While comparisons with the Red Devils still remain few and far between, Fulham found themselves in the Premier League in 2001, meeting Al Fayed's pledge to play top flight football with a year to spare.

After a few mid-table finishes under managers Jean Tigana and Chris Coleman, the Cottagers flirted with relegation for two successive seasons. The second of which, the 2007/08 term, saw the departure of Lawrie Sanchez and the arrival of Roy Hodgson.

Ultimate Miracle
Few Fulham fans could have guessed that the former Blackburn Rovers manager could have had such a dramatic impact on the club's success. Despite enjoying a successful career abroad, little was known about Hodgson on English shores.

But after masterminding the club's escape from almost certain relegation in 2008, his reputation grew and grew, and he quickly became the darling of the Fulham faithful. When Fulham stayed up on the last day of the season, after three successive away wins for the first time since their promotion, many fans thought Hodgson had pulled off the ultimate miracle.

Spine-Tingling
However this was quickly bettered the following season. The club recorded their highest ever Premier League finish of seventh, thanks largely to Hodgson's tactical nous, canny ability in the transfer market and excellent man-management skills that saw players low on confidence transformed in to world beaters. That fantastic season ensured Fulham's passage to European football for the first time since they won the now defunct Intertoto Cup in 2003.

Fast forward 18 European matches later, and Fulham, who have never lost at home in the Europa League, are 1-0 down against Hamburg. In a spine-tingling second half, Hodgson's side rallied, with well worked goals from Simon Davies and Zoltan Gera booking their place in the final.

Chants of "Stand up if you still believe" were quickly re-jigged. "Stand up for the Roy Hodgson" bellowed around the ground as Fulham fans saluted their manager and his well drilled team.

Few would have thought that when they lined up against Lithuania's Vetra nine months ago, Fulham would be among the last two of 193 clubs left standing in the competition.

The last team in England left playing European football, Atletico Madrid await the Cottagers in the final at the Hamburg Arena on 12th May.

TRAVEL CHAOS
Hodgson: UEFA should consider postponing final
Soccernet - May 9, 2010

Fulham manager Roy Hodgson has called on UEFA to postpone the Europa League final if the volcanic ash causes more travel chaos ahead of Wednesday's clash with Atletico Madrid in Hamburg.

The Cottagers, who fielded a much-changed side for Sunday's 4-0 defeat in their last Premier League game at Arsenal, faced an arduous journey to get to Germany for the first leg of their semi-final after European airspace was shutdown following eruptions in Iceland.

The latest burst of ash is now drifting across areas of France, Spain, northern Italy and Germany bringing more disruption as several airports - including Munich - have been closed. Forecasts suggest the volcanic cloud could disrupt UK airspace again over the next few days and Fulham are set to fly out on Tuesday morning.

Hodgson maintains if the situation worsens, then Europe's footballing governing body must take a stance.

"We are worried, because they are always talking about changing wind direction, and having to play this game on Sunday does not give us too much alternative," said the Fulham manager. "It is all very well people saying change the flights, but we can only change that till tomorrow.

"We are talking about 40 people and a lot of kit - it is not like someone going on a package holiday, it is a major operation.

"We are training tomorrow morning, and I am not expecting to race around and try to contact the players now to say 'You had better bring your bags for 9 o'clock tomorrow morning.' It could be very problematic and I only hope we have the luck to see the ash cloud disappear from the airspace between England and Germany.

"It is a very, very complicated matter and while our administrative team are working on it as best they can, to some extent we are going to be very much in the hands of the aviation authorities. What we can and can't do will be decided by them, not us."

With the ash closing Spanish airports, Atletico are likely to face similar problems.

Hodgson added: "If Madrid are also in that situation, UEFA should show some transigence, rather than the usual intransigence, and trying to find a solution which helps us both by postponing the game until we both can fly there.

"I do not think it is quite that simple to say 'the game is Wednesday, you have to get there', if Madrid are facing a 20-hour journey and we are facing a 30-hour journey, because I do not think this is what the finals are about - they are a great occasion.

"You would be placing the game with thousands and thousands of English and Spanish fans not able to go, which I would say is another reason for UEFA to reconsider. It would be harsh, especially on a team like ours who have had to do it once already."

Hodgson hopes his injury problems will clear up ahead of the Europa League final. Paul Konchesky (ankle), Brede Hangeland (knee), Aaron Hughes (groin) and Damien Duff (leg) are all expected to train on Monday.

Striker Bobby Zamora, however, faces a race against time to shake off a niggling Achilles problem. Defender John Pantsil and Bjorn Helge Riise were both substituted at Emirates Stadium.

Hodgson said: "Pantsil has felt a slight problem in his thigh, but we do not think it is massive. It might be a slight muscle strain, but the physios did not seem to be terribly disturbed. We will have to re-assess him tomorrow.

"Riise was suffering from stomach cramps at half-time. That could be worse. He has had to go home, and we hope it is not a viral infection."

Hodgson is keeping his fingers cross Zamora can play some part against Atletico.

"Bobby is also making progress and tomorrow will be quite a crucial day to see if he is fit enough to train, or whether he needs more time," he said.

"Of course, though, the more time he needs, the more difficult it makes my team selection because he has not trained or played since coming off against Hamburg.

"Time is working on his behalf, so if Bobby was lucky enough to be involved for England, then by the time that group get together after the FA Cup final, it would not prevent him from taking part in that."

Ferguson Jagokan Fulham Juara Liga Eropa

http://media.vivanews.com/thumbs2/2008/12/21/61375_sir_alex_ferguson_300_225.jpg

Sekali lagi, saya kira mereka mempunyai kesempatan besar," tegas Ferguson.

Zamora misses training ahead of final
Soccernet - May 11, 2010

Fulham manager Roy Hodgson is sweating over the fitness of leading scorer Bobby Zamora ahead of Wednesday's Europa League final after the striker missed training on Tuesday.

Zamora has been suffering with an Achilles injury and required a pain-killing injection to play in the semi-final against Hamburg SV two weeks ago.

The striker, who has netted 19 goals this season, trained on Monday but failed to join his Fulham team-mates for a run-out at the Hamburg Arena on the eve of the biggest match in the club's 131-year history.

Other than Zamora the whole squad participated, including in-form winger Damien Duff, who has been battling with a leg injury.

Earlier, manager Roy Hodgson expressed his hope that Zamora and Duff would be available to face Atletico Madrid but now faces an anxious wait on the former.

"Both players trained yesterday and that was very positive," said the Fulham boss. "I've been given no indication that they're suffering from a reaction so my hope is that they'll be available tomorrow."

Fulham will have to beat Atletico Madrid on Wednesday night to lift the trophy, but Hodgson believes just guiding Fulham to the Europa League final is a massive achievement.

"I was very proud to get to that final with Inter but I'm even prouder to be here with Fulham because we were much less fancied in the tournament than Inter were in 1997," he said.

"Secondly, we've had a tougher passage to the final. When I think back to the teams Inter eliminated along the way, they weren't the big names that we've beaten here.

"I'm hoping the bad memories of 1997 will be expunged by a good victory tomorrow evening."

Final Europa League
Atletico Juara!
Mohammad Resha Pratama - detiksport

Tak sampai lima menit berselang Fulham menyamakan kedudukan.

Susunan pemain

Atletico Madrid: 43-David de Gea; 17-Tomas Ujfalusi, 21-Luis Perea, 18-Alvaro Dominguez, 3-Antonio Lopez; 19-Jose Antonio Reyes (14-Eduardo Salvio 78), 12-Paulo Assuncao, 8-Raul Garcia, 20-Simao Sabrosa (9-Jose Manuel Jurado 68); 7-Diego Forlan, 10-Sergio Aguero (2-Juan Valera 119).

Fulham: 1-Mark Schwarzer; 6-Chris Baird, 18-Aaron Hughes, 5-Brede Hangeland, 3-Paul Konchensky; 16-Damien Duff (10-Erik Nevland 84), 20-Dickson Etuhu, 13-Danny Murphy (27-Jonathan Greening 118), 29-Simon Davies; 11-Zoltan Gera; 25-Bobby Zamora (23-Clint Dempsey 55). ( mrp / arp )

well done Atletico.. superb performance by Kun Aguerro & Diego Forlan... (a Manc.. still)
