McClaren favourite to be named new Wolfsburg boss

Wolfsburg hope to name their new coach this week with Steve McClaren reportedly the preferred choice following his title triumph in the Netherlands with FC Twente.

McClaren guided Twente to their first ever Eredivisie title with a 2-0 success at NAC Brada on Sunday and Wolfsburg are thought to want the former England coach to take the reins at the Volkswagen Arena.

Lorenz-Gunther Kostner is currently the interim manager of the reigning German champions, having taken over from Armin Veh when it became apparent that he wouldn't be able to repeat last season's Bundesliga title success.

The Wolves were reportedly close to recruiting former Liverpool boss Gerard Houllier only for the deal to fall through, but Wolfsburg general manager Dieter Hoeness told Kicker: "It is planned that we will present the new man this week.''

Hoeness insisted, though, they would not be rushed into revealing his identity.

"If it's Friday, Saturday or Sunday, we don't care. Only when everything is cleanly concluded will we make the name known,'' he added in the Bild newspaper.

Wolfsburg have endured a disappointing season and can finish no higher than eighth, meaning McClaren, who extended his contract with FC Twente only last October, would be sacrificing the chance of Champions League football were he to join them.

McClaren's predecessor as Twente coach, Fred Rutten, left the club for the Bundesliga, joining Schalke in 2008, only to be sacked before the end of his first season. Twente, though, will do all they can to keep hold of their man.

"We hope he stays for a long time,'' chairman Joop Munsterman said on Sky Sports News.

Steve McClaren's agent has confirmed that he will make a decision on his future this weekend, amid reports Wolfsburg have firmed up their interest in him.

McClaren has just led Twente to the Dutch title and a host of clubs are now tracking him.

Former German champions Wolfsburg are understood to be keen on securing his services, and sources claim that he has met with Bundesliga club.

However, another German side Hamburg are known to also be keen - whilst it is believed the likes of Liverpool, Aston Villa, West Ham and Celtic are keeping abreast of the former England coach's situation.

McClaren's agent Colin Gordon has now been quoted by the Dutch media, suggesting a decision on his future will be made over the weekend.

"There are many interested clubs," Gordon told De Telegraaf.

"He will use this weekend to think about his future.

"He is home in England with his wife and sons, and they will be involved in any situations he makes."

VIVAnews - Manajer Manchester United Sir Alex Ferguson menilai salahnya langkah Steve McLaren saat menjadi pelatih timnas Inggris. Fergie -sapaan Ferguson- menyatakan kesalahan itu bersumber dari usia McLaren yang masih terlalu muda.

Kesalahan itu mengakibatkan jatuhnya kredibilitas McLaren di Inggris. Sebab mantan asisten Fergie itu membawa Inggris ke puncak keterpurukan saat gagal lolos ke Euro 2008. Atas hal itu, McLaren yang kini melatih di klub Jerman, Wolfsburg, mendapat julukan ‘Wally with the Brolly’. Kata-kata olokan yang berati 'orang bodoh yang memegang payung'.

"Ketika negara Anda memanggil, mudah sekali kita dibujuk karena panggilan seperti itu mungkin tidak akan datang lagi," kata Fergie dikutip dari Sport UK, Senin 17 Mei 2010.

McLaren kini memperbaiki reputasinya di luar Inggris dengan membawa FC Twente juara Eredivisie -Liga Belanda- untuk pertama kalinya di musim 2009-10. Semusim sebelumnya, Twente sukses berada di posisi Runner Up serta melangkah ke final Piala Belanda.

Atas prestasinya itu, McLaren dianugerahi Rinus Michels Award. Sebuah penghargaan yang berasal dari nama mantan pelatih dan pemain nasional Belanda yang kemudian diabadikan dalam bentuk penghargaan pada pelatih berprestasi.

Kini, McLaren bertualang ke Jerman bersama Wolfsburg. Ia adalah pelatih Inggris pertama yang melatih klub Jerman.

Former England manager Steve McClaren has been sacked by German side VfL Wolfsburg following a string of poor results.

McClaren joined Wolfsburg after winning the Dutch Eredivisie title with Twente Enschede in 2010 but was sacked following Saturday's 1-0 defeat at Hannover 96.

The result leaves the club 12th in the Bundesliga, just one point above the relegation zone, but McClaren has been left with "a bad taste in the mouth" as player power may have contributed to his dismissal.

McClaren instructed Wolfsburg striker Patrick Helmes, who came off the bench against Hannover, to take penalties but his orders were ignored by Brazilian playmaker Diego, who demanded the ball and then slammed the 78th-minute spot-kick against the crossbar.

After his side failed to score from the spot, McClaren said: "A decision had been made, the team knew, Helmes knew, everybody knew. Everyone knew the situation the moment it was given. We were sure Helmes would take the penalty. The result and how it happened has left a bad taste in the mouth."

Diego remained unrepentant: "I don't know what is wrong, I have taken penalties before. I don't see any problem."

McClaren managed five wins, eight draws and eight defeats in his 21 games at the helm, but had secured just one win in the last 11 games.

The former Middlesbrough manager almost lost his job before Christmas but was allowed to reinvest part of the £27 million received from Manchester City for Edin Dzeko on six reinforcements. They include Helmes, bought from Bayer Leverkusen last week for £7.5 million and who is seen as a replacement for the Bosnian striker, and Tuncay Sanli, bought from Stoke City.

Pierre Littbarski, McClaren's former assistant, has been named as his replacement.


Wolfsburg chief executive Dieter Hoeness said: "We were not convinced that we could have a stable collaboration with Steve McClaren until the end of the season. We tried it, but unfortunately we have now lost the belief.

"Following the recent negative results we cannot underestimate our situation in the table. Being only one point clear of the relegation places, we are alarmed. Now it's just a question of increasing the gap to the relegation places as soon as possible."

Explaining Littbarski's elevation to the hot seat, Hoeness added: "We talked at great length with him. He has convinced us that he will take the necessary measures in our situation."

Wolfsburg chairman Dr Francisco Javier Garcia Sanz claimed the club gave McClaren every opportunity to turn their season around, but in the end were forced to act with the Yorkshireman just nine months into a two-year contract.

"We have not seen any alternative," he said. "Of course we all want to see continuity, particularly in the coaching position. Therefore, we have been waiting a long time with the decision.

"The supervisory board and management now believes, however, that the team cannot continue under Steve McClaren."

Nottingham Forest have given Steve McClaren a route back into English football since his spell in charge of the national team ended in failure and ridicule after they terminated the contract of manager Billy Davies with immediate effect.

Forest were unable to secure promotion to the Premier League in last season's Championship play-offs, falling to a 3-1 aggregate defeat to eventual winners Swansea and have now turned to the former FC Twente, Wolfsburg and England boss.

McClaren has signed a three-year contract and said: ''I'm fully aware of the fans' expectations, we are going to do everything in our power to get back into the Premier League.''

Forest were relegated in 1999 and have been unable to claw their way back, with their spell in the Football League including three seasons in League One from 2005 to 2008.

But chief executive Mark Arthur said: "The club moved quickly to secure his services as it is rare for a manager and coach of his undoubted calibre to be available.

"Steve has a proven track record of coaching and managing at club level, having played a key role in helping Manchester United secure the Champions League trophy, three Premier League titles and an FA Cup; guided Middlesbrough to the League Cup and also to the final of the UEFA Cup and led FC Twente to their first ever Dutch title. We are delighted to have him on board at The City Ground."

McClaren has also been assured his mission to end the club's 13-year exile from the Premier League will be supported financially by the board.

Arthur said: ''Money has been available in the past. Nigel Doughty has put £25 million into the club in the last two seasons, so I think it's a bit of a fallacy to suggest that no money has been made available.

''Steve will have similar funds available to him if he can identify a player of the quality who will enhance the quality of the current squad.

''We have a very good squad, but he will be looking to improve it in certain positions. I think we all know that the first position we must try and sort out is left-back.''

Balik ke Inggris, Steve McClaren Besut Forest

London, detiksport - Setelah merantau ke Belanda dan Jerman, Steve McClaren dipastikan pulang ke Inggris musim panas ini. Eks pelatih timnas Inggris itu menandatangani kontrak untuk menjadi pelatih klub Divisi Championship, Nottingham Forest.

"Klub bertindak cepat untuk mengamankan jasanya, dan ini kondisi yang jarang terjadi saat seorang pelatih yang tak diragukan kemampuannya seperti dia bisa tersedia," ungkap Presiden Eksekutif Forest, Mark Arthur, usai secara resmi mengontrak McClaren.

Sebelum dipinang Forest, McClaren dalam posisi menganggur. Wolfsburg yang terakhir memperkerjakannya memutus kontrak kerjasama pada Februari lalu menyusul serangkaian hasil buruk yang didapat di Liga Jerman.

"Steve sudah membuktikan trek rekornya sebagai pelatih dan saat menangani klub, memainkan peran penting saat membantu Manchester United memenangi trofi Liga Champions, tiga gelar Premier League dan Piala FA, mengantar Middlesbrough memenangi Piala Liga dan juga masuk final Piala UEFA dan mengantar FC Twente memenangi Liga Belanda," lanjut Arthur di Skysports.

Sebagai pelatih perjalanan karir McClaren terbilang sudah sangat panjang. Dia mengawalinya sebagai asisten pelatih di Derby County tahun 1995 dan berlanjut di Manchester United, baru di tahun 2001 dia menjadi manajer dan memberi sukses buat The Boro saat menjuarai Piala Liga tahun 2003/2004.

Dianggap suskses bersama Middlesbrough, McClaren kemudian ditunjuk jadi pelatih timnas Inggris. Namun dia gagal mengantar The Three Lions masuk putaran final Piala Eropa 2008, yang berbuntut keluarnya surat pemecatan.

Pelatih 50 tahun itu kemudian hijrah ke Belanda untuk membesut Twente. Di sana dia kembali meraih keberhasilan dengan mengantar klub tersebut jadi kampiun Liga Belanda. McClaren kemudian memutuskan melatih Wolfsburg pada musim 2010/2011.

Bola.net - Steve McClaren tidak perlu waktu lama untuk memutuskan akan kembali melatih Twente. Mantan pelatih timnas Inggris ini mengatakan jika kembali menangani klub peserta Eredivisie itu adalah keputusan termudah yang pernah dibuatnya.

McClaren sebelumnya pernah menangani Twente dari tahun 2008 hingga 2010 dan berhasil mempersembahkan satu-satunya trofi Eredivisie dalam sejarah klub. Dan McClaren mengungkapkan alasannya untuk menerima tawaran dari Twente menggantikan Co Adriaanse sebagai pelatih.

"Ini adalah keputusan yang mudah. Saya mempunyai 3 alasan untuk kembali, Klub ini dipimpin dengan baik oleh Presiden klub, Joop Munsterman. Klub ini mempunyai visi yang baik, Twente masih terus berkembang. Dan terakhir kali saya butuh satu tahun setengah untuk bisa menyesuaikan diri, namun kami ini bakal lebih cepat," ucap McClaren saat jumpa pers.

"Yang kedua, tim ini dalam kondisi bagus dan seimbang. Dengan diperkuat oleh beberapa pemain berpengalaman seperti Sander Boschker, Wout Brama dan Peter Wisgerhof."
