Manchester United: season player ratings
MEN, Stuart Mathieson - May 17, 2010
Stuart Mathieson sees United just fail to make it four Premier League titles on the trot and pinpoints areas where they failed in his season player ratings...
EDWIN VAN DER SAR: At 39 he still proved agile, cool and dominant. No substitute for experience and the Dutchman steadied the ship superbly 8
BEN FOSTER: Had the world in his hands and he blew his opportunity. Could have been United and England No1 but error-strewn period wrecked it 5
TOMASZ KUSZCZAK: The Pole benefited from Foster's disappointing effort and produced some decent form but still not good enough to keep out Van der Sar 6
GARY NEVILLE: His illustrious Old Trafford career looked set to come to an end. Struggled with injury. Low point against Leeds in FA Cup but hit back strongly to justifiably win new deal 7
RAFAEL: Injury hit right-back position allowed him to develop. Measured progress but the young Brazilian suffered in the Champions League quarter-final at Old Trafford when he looked vulnerable 7
WES BROWN: Late 2009 form won him a place for England and deservedly so but the Mancunian's susceptibility to injury reared ugly head again 6
JOHN O'SHEA: Stared season at right-back commandingly but dead leg injury playing for Ireland in November ruined his campaign 5
RIO FERDINAND: When he has played he has looked the business as one of the world's best but back and groin injuries have cost him dearly. 20 appearances is not a good return 7
NEMANJA VIDIC: Disappointing follow-up to his club Player of Year campaign in the previous term. Constant rumours of an exit. Has recaptured his solid form in the spring 7
JONNY EVANS: Started well then injury knocked him off track. When he returned he picked up decently then had some inconsistent displays 6
PATRICE EVRA: An outstanding consistent season. More appearances than anyone and during traumatic injury time for defence he was a stable factor 8
ANTONIO VALENCIA: The unassuming Ecuadorian had big boots to fill on right but his steady progress has impressed. Not a circus act but a straightforward winger. A solid start to a promising United career 7
DARREN FLETCHER: Has been the mainstay and first choice central midfield selection. The willing worker has been a dominant engine room force for the Reds 8
PAUL SCHOLES: Seven goals from 37 appearances couldn't have asked more from the veteran. Can't do it every week but he had a damn good go at it 8
DARRON GIBSON: A mini breakthrough for the Irishman. Sir Alex Ferguson has given him a few decent chances and he hasn't let him down. Provided a goal threat 6
MICHAEL CARRICK: Had a decent winter but in the spring has been criticised for too many giveaway passes and has slipped from the first choice XI 6
ANDERSON: Disappointing progress from the Brazilian. Eastlands semi-final was a let down and when he finally got back in injury wrecked it 5
JI-SUNG PARK: Cannot fault his effort and had a purple patch scoring goals against Arsenal, Milan and Liverpool but hasn't done enough to make him a regular 6
RYAN GIGGS: Not as good as he was last season but in patches the 36-year-old has justified his selection and you cannot argue with another 12-month contract 7
NANI: Typically frustrating early on but in 2010 he has been transformed. Suddenly we are seeing a dangerous more consistent winger 8
GABRIEL OBERTAN: New recruit last summer and hasn't had a great look in. Hit-and-miss but has the potential to become very useful addition 6
DIMITAR BERBATOV: Divides the Reds support. Occasionally brilliant but too often a peripheral and off-colour figure. Led line well on occasion but still an enigma 6
WAYNE ROONEY: Took up the Ronaldo-Tevez mantle fantastically and United would have been nowhere near runners-up without him and his 34 goals and inspiration. What a pity injury struck against Bayern Munich and his campaign faded 9
MICHAEL OWEN: Nine goals wasn't a bad return from 20 appearances but the gamble hasn't really paid dividends and cannot shake off his injury prone tag 6

sampe pernah terbesit dipikiran gw, kalo evans udah pantes geser posisi rio,..(lebay mode: on),...hohoho

Manchester United player ratings
Soccernet, Richard Jolly - May 18, 2010
With another term coming to end, and a summer holiday dominated by the World Cup fast approaching, it seems an appropriate time to deliver those all-important report cards for the Premier League elite.
So which players excelled themselves, and which were left fearing the hairdryer treatment on a weekly basis? Soccernet's team of writers deliver their marks out of ten.
Wayne Rooney - 9.5. Apart from getting injured at a rather inconvenient moment, he could do no wrong. Scored 34 goals and, at times, seemed more significant than that haul indicated. Led the line with bullish determination, sometimes without sufficient support, and became the talisman of the side. Nothing symbolised his new-found ruthlessness quite like his return in the air, scoring more headed goals in a month than he had in the rest of his career. It was a brilliant response to the loss of Cristiano Ronaldo.
Patrice Evra - 8. One error in the Allianz Arena, leading to Ivica Olic's goal, aside, he had an almost flawless campaign. Evra's consistency goes unremarked these days; it is simply taken for granted. It extended, vitally, to his fitness in a season when all other defenders fell by the wayside. It was a sign of the Frenchman's status at Old Trafford that he captained United at times, including in the Carling Cup final.
Darren Fletcher - 8. The most improved player in the Premier League last season merely maintained his standards. But that, in turn, elevated his reputation; last year was no one-off. Influential displays against Arsenal, Manchester City, AC Milan and Liverpool cemented his standing as a big-game player.
Paul Scholes - 8. To think that Sir Alex Ferguson had to talk him out of retirement. Scholes had a superlative second half of the season, delivering crucial goals - two against Manchester City alone - and showing that few can pass the ball with such accuracy or penetration. He still can't tackle, but he still can play.
Antonio Valencia - 7.5. An encouraging first year at Old Trafford. Ignore the obvious Ronaldo comparisons and Valencia showed himself to be a highly accomplished right winger. Sheer speed, accurate delivery and considerable consistency made him a fine signing.
Nani - 7.5. Initially a cause of exasperation and then one of encouragement. He began badly, vanished, seemingly for good, mid-season and returned to finish the year terrifically well. Vital end-of-season goals, against Tottenham and Sunderland, and some hugely impressive displays in crucial games against Arsenal and Bayern Munich suggested a player finally turning potential into potent performances.
Ryan Giggs - 7. He still has the turn of pace and influence of a younger man. Started the season well, with a trio of outstanding displays against Arsenal, Tottenham and Manchester City, and, after a mid-season dip in form, ended it excellently; witness the nerveless penalties against Spurs. Like Paul Scholes, certainly merits his new one-year deal.
Edwin van der Sar - 7. His appearances were limited by injury and his wife's illness, but Van der Sar's 21 games brought 12 clean sheets, some fine saves and the reminder that he is a marked improvement on Tomasz Kuszczak and Ben Foster. Turns 40 this year, but there were few signs of decline.
Nemanja Vidic - 6.5. The United Players' Player of the Year in 2009 couldn't retain his title. Vidic was uncharacteristically uncertain in autumn, picking up his now habitual red card against Fernando Torres, and was among the umpteen absentees in December. But the final ten weeks of the campaign brought a return to his redoubtable best.
Jonny Evans - 6. Reasonable rather than remarkable. He didn't have the impact of the previous campaign but being Rio Ferdinand's deputy seems a guarantee of fairly regular first-team football. A new contract means he should be United's future, but Evans doesn't always impose himself now and tends to look more comfortable with Nemanja Vidic alongside him.
Darron Gibson - 6. Featured more often, but not quite a breakthrough year. Five goals from 12 starts is testament to Gibson's shooting power, but even with Owen Hargreaves missing for all bar 36 seconds of the season and Anderson often unavailable, he didn't force himself into the starting XI too often. And when he did, he was often back on the bench soon.
Gary Neville - 6. Fared better than many feared against Ronaldinho and Craig Bellamy but his supposed renaissance was rather exaggerated, as Florent Malouda showed, and some of Sir Alex Ferguson's more flowing tributes rather unnecessary. But with John O'Shea and Wes Brown often injured, he figured more than might have been predicted and probably deserved a new contract. Just.
Wes Brown - 5.5. A frustrating, stop-start season which, like many in his career, was disrupted by injuries. Called "the best natural defender in the country" by Sir Alex Ferguson, he is nonetheless the fourth-choice centre back and, seemingly, in a four-horse race for the right back spot.
John O'Shea - 5.5. Captained United in their opening league game against Birmingham but, in another unusual development, sat out most of the season. The thigh injury incurred on international duty in November was the most serious of his United career. A first choice last season, it may have reduced him to the rank of odd-job man again.
Park Ji-sung - 5.5. The scorer of United's final goal of the season, the South Korean's only other strikes came in the marquee games against Arsenal, AC Milan and Liverpool. It marked a golden two-month spell in an otherwise undistinguished campaign for a player who reiterated his usefulness on the big stage but, by being ineffectual at the start and end of the year, was still overtaken by Nani and Antonio Valencia.
Dimitar Berbatov - 5. The great enigma managed some delightful touches and a goal every other league start, but failed to score in Europe or against a side in the top seven. Consigned to the bench against most of the more demanding opponents and selected from the start against the lesser sides, he remains more of a problem than a solution.
Rafael da Silva - 5. A year that will probably be remembered for his red card against Bayern Munich. Like the dismissal, that is a shame for Rafael, whose sense of adventure means he can offer much, but a greater sense of judgment is required.
Rio Ferdinand - 5. Chronic back and calf problems limited him to just 12 league starts but, in an awful autumn, his form was as much of a concern as his fitness. Got the England captaincy by default, but the last couple of months have shown glimpses why he and Nemanja Vidic came to be regarded as the finest defensive partnership in the Premier League.
Michael Owen - 5. A season of three highs - against Manchester City, Wolfsburg and Aston Villa - in an otherwise demoralising campaign, where excellent finishes were sandwiched by mediocrity and anonymity. The fact he started so few league games - just five - told a tale in itself. Only really looks a back-up now.
Anderson - 4.5. It can be easy to forget Anderson ended last season as an integral part of the midfield. This year has contained a cruciate knee ligament injury, a reported falling-out with Sir Alex Ferguson and too few influential displays. A belated first United goal, at Tottenham, may be the only highlight.
Michael Carrick - 4.5. Started slowly, as has become his tradition, but ended terribly, which has not. Obviously lost Sir Alex Ferguson's trust as well as his place after erring in both legs of the Champions League quarter-final against Bayern Munich. Never seemed more important than when he was bringing a stately elegance to his time as an emergency centre back, but seems to have regressed as a midfielder.
Ben Foster - 3. An abject year. He could have been first choice for Manchester United and England; instead, Foster ranks well behind Edwin van der Sar and Tomasz Kuszczak at Old Trafford now after he made a series of mistakes in his run in the team. Will leave this summer.

Rooney and Berbatov rated best players at United
Posted on 29 May 2010
If anyone ever wants to open a can of worms amongst Manchester United fans all he has to do is say the word BERBATOV and you can be guaranteed that heated discussions will immediately follow. The Bulgarian will either be described as having the best football brain at Old Trafford OR that he’s a lazy, useless, overpriced flop. You rarely get anything in between except perhaps a grudging admission that yes, Berba’s not a bad player BUT he’s not suited to United.
It was therefore interesting to come across a unique method of identifying the “Player of the Season” in The Times which was impossible to resist writing about. Why? Because according to this method, Berbatov was ranked in an overall 8 position, one ahead of Liverpools Fernando Torres and the second highest United player after Wayne Rooney.
The method emphasised the point that fans cannot possibly watch every player at the same time, compare them, and then produce a consistent ranking. Data and computer modeling were required to distinguish between the contributions players make on the pitch. The method was used by Dr Henry Stott, Dr Mark Latham, Dr Ian Graham and The Times author of the article Daniel Finkelstein.
This years Castrol’s commitment to football performance data has allowed for a big step forward in accurately assessing players. It provided a lot more data to base the measurement upon which to build a sophisticated model of the moves that players make on the pitch and how they build towards a goal. Basically a player is rewarded or penalised for his role in making a goal more or less likely.
The method divided the total contribution of each player by the number of minutes he played. If a player played fewer than 2,000 minutes however (a shade more than 22 matches), the total was still divided by the same 2,000 minutes. This awarded players who featured for more than half the season which was deemed to be a justifiable compromise.
The measure ends up giving high placings for Wayne Rooney, Marcus Hahnemann, Frank Lampard, Florent Malouda and Dimitar Berbatov but this method found that the player of the season for 2009-10 was Chelsea’s Didier Drogba. Now let the arguments begin.

Will leave this summer.
carrick jgn di lego dulu, kontribusinya emang agak kurang musim ini but he's good midfielder.....

[SEASON RATINGS] Manchester United’s Midfielders
By The United Religion Published: 19th June 2011
Football-Talk
In the third installment of a four-part series, The United Religion rates how each of Manchester United midfielders's contributed to the success of the club during the 2010/11 season.
Despite losing their final game of the season, it was a very successful campaign as the Reds won the FA Community Shield; Quarterfinalists of the Carling Cup; Semifinalists of the FA Cup; Runners-up in the UEFA Champions League and, most importantly, they became Champions of the Barclays Premier League for the 19th time.
Throughout the entire season, a tremendous amount of criticism was shelled at the players in the United engine room, but let's see how each midfielder rated.
Anderson - 7
Ended the 2010/11 with the best statistical month of his United career with three goals and two assists from his three games in May. Even though that was his best month, his best game came in the Reds' 7-1 demolition of Blackburn back in November. Altogether, Anderson made 30 appearances for United and scored four goals in the process - three more than his previous three seasons combined.
Michael Carrick - 7
The one player that receives more than his fair share of criticism for not being the robust, box-to-box midfielder that the Old Trafford faithful is accustom to, but Michael had a decent season. Even though it was his first season that he did not score a goal, Carrick was not in this side to do that, because Ferguson converted him into a quarterback, holding midfielder. His 43 appearances were tied for the least amount of times he has featured for United, but he was on every team sheet in every big game that the club had.
Darren Fletcher - 6
Failed to reach the heights of the previous two seasons, Darren had to exert all of a fair share of his energy trying to fight off a virus that kept him out of the last part of the season. With that said, Fletch still managed to make 37 appearances for United, which was third most amongst the Reds' midfielders.
Darron Gibson - 6
Like Carrick, Darron gets a lot of criticism that he is not United quality, but for the second year in a row, he scored a vital goal at Old Trafford in the Champions League knockout stages. Gibson is approaching his prime years, and 20 appearances a season is not something a player should aspire to. Gibbo is certainly a loyal servant to the club, because he has been able to leave on a few occasions, especially with his national team manager chiming in, but he still remains a valuable squad player in Sir Alex' eyes.
Ryan Giggs - 7
Turned 37-years old this year, and Ryan has not shown any signs of slowing down as he total 38 appearances. Being rested at the right times by Sir Alex Ferguson, the Welshman provided some key assists and a goal late in the season, which underlines his ability to still dictate results at his tender age. Giggs is the only player to have scored and played in every season of the Barclays Premier League since it originate in 1992/93 season - a 19 years running. Impressively, Giggs still has the energy to prolong his United career at least another season, which will increase his club-leading appearance total of 876.
Nani - 8.5
After struggling to make a name for himself at Old Trafford, Nani had a breakout season for United as he registered a Premier League-high 18 assists during his personal-best 48 matches for the club. Nani used his trickery and ability to beat his marker with both feet to not only create a chance for his teammates, but to also total his best goal total, 10, in a Red shirt. However, a disgusting challenge by Jamie Carragher saw Nani lose that killer edge, but he was still honored with Players' Player of the Year award, which is the ultimate honor that he could receive.
Gabriel Obertan - 4
Suffered an unfortunate ankle injury during the pre-season, which kept Gabriel on the sidelines to start the season. However, even when he had the chance to make something of this season, Obertan failed to put in a performance to demand a first team shot, which saw him only make 15 appearances including just two after January 1.
Ji-Sung Park - 7.5
There might not be a better player in a big game that does not have the name as Ji-Sung. The South Korean has earned the nickname, "Three Lung" for many reasons and he showed that with some vital goals and displays at different times of the season. Park missed a big chunk of the season through international duty and injury, but he still amassed 27 appearances in 2010/11 and scored eight goals - his best total since joining the club six years ago.
Paul Scholes - 7
Paul's season started off with a bang with him winning August's Barclays Premier League Player of the Month after some fine performances.Injuries and form limited him to just 32 appearances, which was the third lowest of his fourth career at Old Trafford. One disappointing aspect of Scholesy's was that he only registered one goal - a trademark long range thunderbolt - that took him to 150 goals in his United career. After the season, Scholes, who is a very proud, but humble professional, saw his numbers dipping, so he called it a day on his unparalleled career.
Antonio Valencia - 7
Suffered a horrific leg break against Rangers early in the season, but Antonio came back from that just as strong, which was symbolic of his attitude. After coming back from the injury, the mild mannered traditional winger allowed his football do his talking and was a constant fixture in the side. He became the first Ecuadorian to feature in a UEFA Champions League final, but, altogether, Antonio featured 19 times for United and scored three goals in all competitions.
