[Q&A] Mark HUGHES

http://cdn.fourfourtwo.com/contentimages/interviews/Hughes_Big1.jpg

Why don’t you call yourself Leslie, your actual first name?
Because Mark’s my name, Leslie’s my father’s name. [Looking bemused, then smiling] No one has ever asked me that before! I was always going to be Mark Leslie Hughes, but maybe it sounded better or looked better on the birth certificate as Leslie Mark Hughes. That’s the only reason, but I was always going to be Mark.

Being Welsh and as hard as nails, was rugby ever an option?
I didn’t go to a rugby-playing school so I never played. When I was in South Wales having football trials, people said 'You’d be a good scrum-half' or whatever, but I never knew what they were talking about! I’d sometimes throw a ball around with my mates but I never played an organised game. There wasn’t a lot of rugby played in my part of North Wales.

When did you first hear the name Sparky?
With a group of friends when I was seven or eight. For some reason, we decided we were going to be nicknamed after a comic. I had a mate called Beano, so I had to pick one. There was a comic called Sparky, it rhymed with Mark, so I picked that. It wasn’t because I was a frustrated electrician or anything, although I did have visions of being one.

You were known as ‘Lager Legs’ as a lad in Wrexham. Was there a point when you realised that booze and football didn’t mix?
Yes. I wrote a book and they were trying to sell the serialisation rights to a newspaper. They needed to hang it on something so we came up with this one chapter which I’ve regretted ever since. It’s as cynical as that, I’m afraid. I enjoyed a drink; I was part of a generation that did and I was doing no more, no less than anybody else. It was never a problem for me.

You’re rarely mentioned in tales of Man United’s drinking culture in the 1980s. Did you come a cropper in a session?
We were just doing what everybody else was doing. If the captain said it was captain’s day out on a Tuesday afternoon after training, you made sure you were there because we built team spirit around that. You can’t do that now because to perform in the Premiership, you’ve got to be physically spot on. In those days you didn’t realise what you were doing.

Did you only leave United for the money? Surely, you weren’t badly off there?
I was on something like £250 a week and still living in digs. I couldn’t afford to move out even though I’d been playing in the first team for 18 months. In the September before I left, a new contract put me up to £1,000 a week, but the situation just snowballed. I met the Barcelona people around January of the year I left [1986]; I was talking to one of the greatest clubs in the world and I was thinking 'I really don’t want to be here.' But I was led a certain way and before I knew it, I signed. Even up to getting on the plane to move out there, I was thinking maybe something will change and I won’t actually go. As it was, I ended up on the plane, but it wasn’t for the money.

Gary Lineker joined Barcelona at the same time. He thrived, you struggled. Why?
Gary was a bit older and he was there with his wife. I was on my own. I’d just met the girl that turned out to be my wife, so it was difficult being separated from her. Barcelona signed you, paid you decent money, but that seemed to be their obligation finished with. It’s not like now where you’ve got people to organise your house, the kids’ schools, cars, everything. I didn’t speak the language. I didn’t have a car so I ended up hiring one for three months because I didn’t know where to buy one. It was shambolic.

I probably settled quicker on the football field than Gary – I scored a few goals while he had an injury and was in and out of the team – but Gary’s style of play was more suited to the Spanish game. He was all about movement and getting on the end of things whereas my game was physical and the referees didn’t like it. I was an aggressive player, but by the time I left Barcelona I wasn’t playing as aggressively as I knew I should be, so I was less of a player. I don’t regret it; I just think I didn’t realise what an opportunity it was.

You scored one in three at Bayern Munich. How did you like Germany?
I certainly had the haircut! I enjoyed it. I’d been out of the Barcelona side for six months. I had an eight-year contract so I was looking at another six years of training and going back to my apartment – that’s all I did. But I wanted to play and Bayern was perfect. The comparison between the two clubs was marked. Bayern have football people in charge. Uli Hoeness understood the mentality of players. Straight away your car was sorted, you knew where you lived, what time you had to be in – it was very German in many ways, but because of that I was very comfortable there. The football suited me, it was probably a halfway house between English and Spanish football, and I had a fantastic time. It’s a great club.

I seem to recall you playing two games in a day: one for Wales and one for Bayern. Did you? Or am I losing it in my old age?
No, you’re not losing it. I was due to play in a European Championship qualifier against Czechoslovakia which we needed to win to qualify. The week before, I’d signed for Bayern and I had dinner with Uli Hoeness who asked me what time the Wales match was. I told him it was around midday and he said, 'That’s OK then, you can play in the evening as well.' Apparently he’d done it before with Soren Lerby, the Danish international. So we kept quiet about it, Uli went to the Wales game and picked me up and we flew to the Bayern game which was just on the other side of the Czech border.

We actually flew over the ground and missed the first half, but I got there at the start of the second half. We didn’t tell anybody – there was a guy in the Bayern team who had a similar haircut to me and when they saw him warming up everybody thought it was me. Then they put my name up and I came on. We were 2-0 down and I’d like to say I turned it round but I didn’t because I was hopelessly knackered. But the other guy who came on was Rummenigge’s younger brother; he scored two goals and we won.

Your hair: how much of natural curl, how much of a perm?
I had it permed once when I was at school at the height of the Kevin Keegan era. Everyone was having it done, but I soon realised I didn’t really need the help of a perm. It got a little bit too tight so after that I just left it natural. Those days are gone unfortunately – the texture of my hair is completely different now.

After becoming a legend in your first spell at Man United, were you worried about going back to Old Trafford – especially for a club record fee?
It’s in the back of your mind that you should never go back, but it was a different club. Alex Ferguson had replaced Ron Atkinson, there had been a tidying up of discipline and everybody knew which way the club wanted to go. If it had been any other club I probably would have stayed in Munich but United swayed me. It was difficult the first couple of years; I did OK personally, I won the Player of the Year, but the team itself wasn’t as strong as it was going to be. Then we won the FA Cup, and from then on it was fantastic.

You scored in the 1991 Cup Winners’ Cup Final against Barcelona. How tempted were you to give the Barça fans the big one? Is that your finest performance?
No, I didn’t play particularly well. The first goal I pinched off Steve Bruce, who wasn’t too happy. Everybody jumped on him but I looked up at the scoreboard, saw my name in lights and thought, 'Steve can have the lads jump all over him, I’ll just have the goal!' The second goal was decent enough but I never had a problem with the Barcelona fans. They gave me a hard time on a few occasions, but I didn’t play particularly well over there. I had a fantastic opportunity to be a success and I didn’t take it. That wasn’t the fault of the Barcelona fans, it was my own.

You were always a great big-game player. Why?
I enjoyed the big games, the bigger the better. Some players have difficulty with that, which I find strange. If you’re in this sport then surely when you get an opportunity to play in a game of huge significance you should enjoy the experience. I just soaked everything up: the game itself, the fans, I loved it, so more often than not I had an impact.

How much of a regret was it to never reach a major tournament with Wales? Was that part of your motivation for managing the national side?
Yes it was. That was the one thing missing from my career. I played in Europe, I won trophies and international caps, but I never played in a major international tournament. We’d miss out one year and think, 'In two years’ time, the European Championships qualifiers will come around – maybe we’ll have a better chance then.' Then that chance would disappear. In the end we ran out of chances, and it was a big regret. So when I got the opportunity to manage the national team that was the Holy Grail: to get us close to qualifying for a major championship. We did that but we fell at the last hurdle.

What was the most severe hairdryer treatment you received from Sir Alex?
I had a few! In one instance, I nearly got taken off after 15 minutes. I wasn’t aware at the time, but we were playing Leeds in a cup game, and I had a couple of throw-ins thrown to me and I knocked them straight out of play. Apparently Sir Alex came running down the stairs to get me off because he thought I was a bit sloppy. Brian Kidd had to calm him down and say, 'He’ll be alright, he’ll get into the game in a minute'. I ended up scoring a goal and we won the game so I got away with it, but I was definitely coming off after 15 minutes.

What was your relationship like with Eric Cantona?
Eric was a fantastic player, a strange guy, his own man. I had a decent enough relationship with him. He rented my house for two years so my wife got friendly with his wife, but we never really socialised together. On the field, it was a really great partnership, I thought. I’m still convinced that if I’d been playing against Crystal Palace what happened wouldn’t have occurred. It’s only my theory but I used to know when Eric had completely lost it. I’d see his eyes go a little bit blacker than usual, and I’d know that for the next five minutes I’d better keep an eye on him. If there was any sorting out to do, I’d say, 'Leave it to me Eric, I’ll boot him for you. Calm down and we’ll be alright.' But I’d been injured against Newcastle and I was out for four or five games so I was listening to it on the radio and I remember thinking, 'You’ve really gone and done it this time'.

You seem like an intelligent, articulate sort of bloke, but as a player you weren’t averse to the red mist. Can you explain what goes through a player’s head in those situations?
I can understand it, but I can’t explain it. If you’re trying to play in a certain way and people try to physically stop you, then on occasions you will react. When I was playing, people were out to stop you affecting the game. The United team of ’93-94 had to be physically and mentally strong because we knew that for the first 20 minutes teams would try to intimidate us. That option is taken away now: people will try to make you believe that Blackburn intimidate teams, but it’s an impossibility. The game today is completely different to when I played. FIFA are doing their best to make it a non-contact sport – which will make it less of spectacle.

Who’s the best player you ever played with? There’s some competition...
Well, Eric is definitely up there. Gianfranco Zola was a great player, a great guy as well. I really enjoyed my time at Chelsea. I went there at the right time, just as they were starting to take off, and I really enjoyed playing alongside Zola, Gianluca Vialli and Ruud Gullit. A lot of those players would be high on the list. 10, 15 years ago British players weren’t particularly professional, so when the top foreign players came over it really struck us. Their attitude to their everyday work, the way they prepared for each game – you’d watch them work, prepare and train correctly and that had a huge impact.

Who was the real guv’nor among the players you played with: Ince, Robson, Keane, Vinnie or yourself?
For me, it was always Robbo because he was my captain. Everything that happened at the club went through Robbo and he was also one of the few players that could change the momentum of the game just by his presence. My experience with Roy Keane was different because I was a senior player when Roy came and in the first year or so he kept himself to himself. It was only when the senior players left that he became the Roy Keane we know now. Incey just thought he was the guv’nor and that will never change in his own mind! One of the great shames of our time together is that, because of the circumstances of his leaving, people forget what a great player he was for United. He was a major player and a major reason why we won league titles.

In 1995, when Alex Ferguson filled the team with kids, what did you and the other senior players who had been discarded think? Surely you agreed with Alan Hansen?
I didn’t agree with him. He didn’t know what I knew because I’d seen them for two years prior to them breaking through. When you’re a senior player and there’s a group of talented young players coming through, you have to take notice because at some point they’ll take your place – and that’s what happened with myself, Paul Ince and Andrei Kanchelskis. The surprise was that we were allowed to go at the same time. I don’t think anyone expected them to win the double that first year, but all the senior players at the club knew there was a young group coming through who were exceptional.

Were you surprised when Fergie sold you to Chelsea?
I wasn’t surprised because I’d already been replaced when the club bought Andy Cole. When Eric jumped into the crowd, I thought there was a chance I’d be able to stay a bit longer, but once he’d made the decision to stay, I knew I wouldn’t play and if I wasn’t playing I wasn’t particularly nice to be around. I’d had a long time being first-choice striker and a big part of my life had been spent at United. I went there when I was 14 and left when I was 31 so I can’t complain. I knew it was right for me to leave and it was right for the club.

Is it true that Ruud Gullit heard a Liverpool player say, “We’ll be OK as long as they don’t bring Hughes on” when you were losing 2-0 to them at half-time?
I’m not sure about that comment, but I wasn’t happy because I was on the bench and I always liked playing Liverpool. We were 2-0 down, not looking like we were going to have an effect on the game, struggling to be perfectly honest. I came on at half-time and I think Mark Wright didn’t particularly enjoy playing against me. I got a goal quite quickly, the crowd jumped on it and we rode the wave. I scored, then Luca [Vialli] scored a couple, Franco [Zola] scored and it was a great turnaround. We blew them away in the second half and it was a great game. A game of significance. I enjoyed it.

What’s the best goal you ever scored?
The best goals are the ones people remember. Most people remember either the goal against Oldham in the FA Cup semi-final or the Cup Winners’ Cup goal against Barcelona. Over the years I’ve probably scored better goals technically, but because so many people remember those goals and the Wales goal against Spain maybe, those are the ones that stand out.

Unusually, you managed your country first. How did you find the transition from country to club management?
People say I did it the wrong way round, but it was ideal for me. I actually thought Roy Keane would have been perfect for the Irish job because I know how much it helped me to understand what management is all about. You could play a game, have all the pressures leading up to it, then the game would finish and you’d have this time before the next one when you could reflect on what happened, how you approached it, what you could improve.

That space between games really helped. You weren’t in the full glare week in, week out so you have time to build your own philosophy of how games should be played and how to deal with players. So from my point of view it was a great education. When I made the decision to go into club management, I knew I was ready. You see so many examples of top players being given great opportunities but they’re not prepared and they sink rather than swim. Wales was perfect for me.

Were you tempted to give Cesc Fabregas a clip round the ear when he got lippy recently? Kids of today, eh?
At the time, yes, I did. I was waiting for my players to come off and he walked past so I stuck my hand out to shake his and he just said, 'Didn’t you used to play for Barcelona?' I could tell there was a bit of disdain in his voice, so I took exception and said 'Have you got a problem with that?' He said something about your team doesn’t play like Barcelona.

Obviously I haven’t got a £100m budget to get players who will play like Barcelona each week, so I tried to make that point. I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt – I may as well do – I don’t think anyone told him to apologise, and I appreciated that. He could easily have made a token gesture and said, ìCan you tell Mark when he comes back from the press that I’m sorry?î but he wanted to tell me personally, so he waited around for 25 minutes. It was said with sincerity, so I accepted it.

Mark Hughes

Chelsea FC
1995-1998
SEASONAL RECORD: Biography 1995/96-1997/98
Mark Hughes was a legend of British football long before he signed for Chelsea for £1.5 million in the summer of 1995. Having won every domestic honour possible in a superb career with Manchester United, it was typical of the man that he should throw himself so enthusiastically into the challenge of resurrecting the fortunes of the club he had supported as a boy. Quietly spoken and modest by nature, Sparky was an altogether different character once he set foot on a football pitch, harassing defenders and rampaging into challenges with relish. Never a favourite amongst the Chelsea supporters during his time with United, Hughes immediately won over his former detractors as he brought his experience and know-how to bear on a Chelsea attack which had been bereft of inspiration for too long. In a first season littered with suspensions the Welshman scored four times during Chelsea's run to the FA Cup semi-final and capped a fine campaign with a hat-trick against Leeds. Despite starting the following season alongside the legendary Gianluca Vialli, it wasn't until Gianfranco Zola was recruited from Parma that Hughes found top form again, the two men forming one of the Premiership's great striking partnerships. A regular starter in league games, Gullit often preferred to start Sparky on the bench for cup games and he proved his value in this role in the FA Cup 4th round tie with Liverpool when he came on to help The Blues turn a 2-0 half-time deficit into a 4-2 victory. Something of an FA Cup talisman, Hughes went on to collect his fourth winner's medal at the end of the season as Chelsea won their first major trophy for 26 years. A regular starter again in 1997/98, it was ironic that he again made his most memorable impact when coming on as a substitute, first when scoring against Arsenal as Chelsea came from behind to reach the final of the Coca Cola Cup and then with a stunning volley against Vicenza that sealed Chelsea's place in the European Cup Winners Cup final. Chelsea won both trophies and in the summer of 1998, with three more winner's medals to add to his extensive collection and having left behind a wealth of magical memories for the Chelsea supporters to cherish, Mark Hughes packed his bags and headed to Southampton in a £650, 000 deal. Hughes Masuk Balon Manajer Fulham
Dimas Ramadani

Liputan6.com, London: Mark Hughes muncul sebagai kandidat manajer Fulham menggantikan Roy Hodgson. Hughes semakin meramaikan bursa setelah The Cottagers gagal membujuk Martin Jol yang memutuskan tetap bertahan bersama Ajax.

Pilih mana Fulham?(DIM/Daily Mail)

Mark Hughes Merapat ke Fulham
Kris Fathoni W - detiksport

Fulham - Fulham masih mencari manajer baru sepeninggal Roy Hodgson.

Setelah Eriksson tercoret, sejumlah nama masih diincar Al-Fayed kendati Hughes tampaknya menjadi favorit.

Hughes Sepakat Tangani Fulham
Muhayati Faridatun - Okezone

LONDON - Status pengangguran Mark Hughes segera berakhir.

Pelatih Ajax Amsterdam Martin Jol sempat menjadi favorit, namun klub asal Belanda enggan melepasnya.

Nama pelatih Timnas Amerika Serikat Bob Bradley juga turut meramaikan bursa ‘kursi panas’ The Cottagers.

(far)

Fulham appoint Mark Hughes on two-year deal
Soccernet - July 29, 2010

Former Manchester City boss Mark Hughes has been appointed on a two-year contract to become the successor to Roy Hodgson at Fulham.

Hughes, sacked by City last December, has been weighing up his options after being linked with a number of jobs both in England and abroad, while Fulham chairman Mohammed Al-Fayed has moved quickly to find a new manager after his failed attempts to lure Martin Jol away from Ajax.

''I would like to welcome Mark Hughes to Fulham. I know that he understands my vision for the Club, and believes in what we want achieve,'' Al-Fayed told the Fulham website.

''We have enjoyed two incredibly successful years, and my hopes and dreams for this club are for that journey to continue. I am confident that with his Premier League and National Team successes, Mark will be a great guy for the job.''

Hughes also revealed his joy at getting the job, telling the site: ''I am happy to have joined Fulham following much speculation regarding the appointment of a new Manager. I have discussed my aspirations with both the Chairman and Alistair Mackintosh and believe that we are aligned in our aims for what can realistically be achieved here.

''I am joining on the back of two of the most successful seasons in the Club's history, and that in itself brings with it the challenges of expectation and ambition. I am confident that with some additions to the squad, hard work and commitment, we can move this Club forward in the right direction.

''I hope the Fulham fans will enjoy some special times during this season's campaign and we will work hard to achieve that. I'm looking forward to working with the squad as soon as possible, and in making sure the on-pitch preparations are complete before the first competitive ball is kicked in August.''

Speaking after the Reds' Europa League qualifier against FK Rabotnicki in Macedonia new Liverpool boss Hodgson said: ''It is a good appointment. I am very pleased for him and Fulham Football Club.

''I think Mark is a very good manager and he has proved his worth many times. It is good Fulham have got such an experienced man to take over. I think he will enjoy working at Fulham because it is a fantastic club with fantastic people and magnificent players. I wish him well, but not too well when he plays against us - but I know he will do well.''

FACT OF THE DAY (30 Juli 2010)

Praktis, armada The Cottagers meraih satu tiket berlaga di Europa League.

(far)

Mark Hughes Serang Mancio

Sebagai manajer, Anda katakan, 'Well, ya, saya suka'."

(espn/row)

Hughes: Ferguson Menghormati Saya

http://stat.k.kidsklik.com/data/photo/2010/08/21/0645184p.jpg

LONDON, KOMPAS.com - Pelatih Fulham, Mark Hughes, mengatakan, Manchester United (MU), selalu bermain bagus bila menghadapi tim besutannya.

"Ia memilij tim terkuat melawan saya.

Mark Hughes backing Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson to get one over Barcelona

Mark Hughes believes if any manager can find a way to beat Barcelona it is Sir Alex Ferguson.

By John Ley

Hughes was there at the beginning, so is well placed to pass judgment on Manchester United’s chances of winning the Champions League. And a man who has played for both clubs warned the Spaniards that the shrewd and experienced Ferguson will find a way of upsetting them.

Hughes helped United win their first European trophy under Ferguson 20 years ago — against Barcelona — and believes that while they are the best team in the world with the best player, his old mentor can find a formula and method to topple the favourites at Wembley Stadium.

Hughes, now the Fulham manager, scored both goals in United’s 2-1 win over Johan Cruyff’s Barcelona on a wet Cup Winner’s Cup night in Rotterdam, a triumph which formed the early foundations for the dynasty built by Ferguson.

Hughes said of the current team: “It is a huge achievement as people are trying to say that this United team is not as strong as those that they have had in the past. To overcome arguably the best team that has ever played the game, that is a huge challenge for anyone. But if anyone can do it, it is Manchester United. Sir Alex will find a way if there is a way possible. It is a big ask. Sir Alex knows that you need luck at the right time and if he gets that anything is possible.

“He’s always looked very closely at the opposition, he’s very conscientious, very particular, and he puts the hours in, looking at videos and going to see the opposition.

“He always has a view and an idea in his mind, not only about the tactical side of it, but the personnel as well. He will have a tactical awareness, but it will be about the players that he puts on the field as well.”

Hughes, 47, remembers that first taste of European glory in Holland well, when United were flying the flag for English football at a difficult time.

“We had been out of Europe as a country, not just as a club, for five years after Heysel so we very much thought we were the flag bearers for English football.

“I remember it was a bit drizzly and the rain was coming down and I recall looking over at the Barca players as we lined up and saw a few shivering, looking at the rain and I thought ‘this might suit us better than them’. I think it did.”

The prospect of Wayne Rooney facing Lionel Messi is the one that fans and neutrals alike will be looking forward to.

“They are completely different players,” added Hughes. “They can win games on their own with a flash of brilliance even if the team isn’t playing particularly well, as we saw with Wayne’s goal against Man City.

“Messi is an outstanding player. We’re fortunate that we’re able to see him at his pomp and hopefully we’ll have more years to enjoy what he can produce. He has a great attitude to the game and is playing in a great side.

“We haven’t seen a player like him. I know it’s difficult to compare players from different generations but what he’s doing now in the modern game is outstanding.”

Hughes quits Fulham, no Villa contact
ESPNsoccernet - June 2, 2011

Mark Hughes has left Fulham after less than a year at Craven Cottage, but ESPNsoccernet understands that he is not Aston Villa's first choice to replace Gerard Houllier.

Hughes, 47, walked out on Fulham on Wednesday night after exercising a clause in his contract that allowed him to quit after his first season, though he is officially still contracted to the Cottagers until June 30.

The Welshman had been linked with a move to Villa before leaving Fulham and his departure led to heightened speculation that he would replace Houllier - who himself left Villa Park on Wednesday.

But former Blackburn and Manchester City manager Hughes was keen to insist that an approach from Villa was not behind his Fulham exit and ESPNsoccernet understands he does not even top the midlands club's shortlist.

"I hope the supporters will understand that as a young, ambitious manager I wish to move on to further my experiences," Hughes said.

"I would also like to take this opportunity to clarify that neither myself nor my representative have approached or have been approached by another club."

"I would like to thank the chairman, directors, players and fans of Fulham Football Club for their support over the last 12 months and wish them every success in the future. I believe my management team and I have done a good job and the club has a strong foundation from which they can go forward.

"I have especially enjoyed our excellent relationship with the chairman and chief executive (Alastair Mackintosh). I sincerely wish Fulham a successful campaign in the Europa League next season and for their continued progress on and off the field.''

A Fulham statement confirmed: "Fulham Football Club can confirm that Mark Hughes has provided notice, under the terms of his contract, to leave the club at the end of June. After discussions with Mark the club has agreed to accept this notice."

Hughes joined Fulham last July, seven months after being sacked by Manchester City, and guided the Cottagers to an eighth-place finish - the second highest in the club's history.

Villa announced on Wednesday that they had parted company with Houllier because of the health problems he suffered towards the end of the season and the likes of Steve McClaren, David Moyes and Rafa Benitez have been linked to the post, with former Chelsea boss Carlo Ancelotti emerging as a favourite among the bookies.

Mark Hughes: Everyone of United's players understands what the club is about...I don't think City have that yet

http://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2011/10/21/article-2052010-0E76002A00000578-839_468x370.jpg

What better way to ignite a Manchester derby than with a Sparky. Mark Hughes, once of United but more recently City, thinks the team he started to build before Roberto Mancini took over might now have the measure of their Manchester neighbours.
He questions Mancini's 'autocratic' style and suggests it might not necessarily have helped matters in the mess that is the latest Carlos Tevez affair. A situation he says would never have arisen had he still been in charge.

But does he consider City capable of matching United, stride for stride, in what promises to be a fascinating Barclays Premier League title race? 'Without a shadow of a doubt,' he says.
'City have incredible depth. In Europe, in the Champions League, I don't think they can get to where they want to be either this season or the next. Because you have to build that knowledge and United improved year on year by playing in the competition.
'But in the Premier League it can happen much more quickly. They have players who understand the Premier League. They have foreign players who have been there for a few seasons; top players like Vincent Kompany and Nigel de Jong. They understand what's required. In terms of what they have, it stands comparison with any team in the league.'

Hughes is holding court in a smart Italian restaurant in Mayfair, and giving his first proper interview since leaving Fulham in the summer.
He explains what seemed a strange decision and why he would like to return to football the moment the right challenge presents itself.
To do so, he has even been improving his Spanish, while those who would hope to assist him in a new role have been studying other languages to increase the options of Team Hughes.
He also reflects on his time at City, articulating his thoughts on the man who succeeded him as well as the Argentina striker he chose to defend over that recent touchline controversy in Munich. He does share an adviser with Tevez but he thinks it must be difficult for any player to operate under Mancini's strict regime.

First, though, he looks forward rather than back, to what promises to be a momentous encounter at Old Trafford on Sunday.
If he can see a significant difference between the teams, it is something in United that might not yet exist at the Etihad Stadium: the mentality of the team, a collective spirit that has provided the foundation on which United's success has been built under Sir Alex Ferguson.
'Whether or not the group at City, as a whole, work as diligently and with the same mantra as United, I don't know,' he says. 'I'd suggest maybe not.
'Every Manchester United player understands what United is about. The players understand it is a privilege to play for United. They show the club that deference.
'I'm not sure the group of players at City understand that yet. A lot of people have come together very quickly. At United there has been continuity, with the manager, with the success they have had. It gives them a different dynamic.'

So how does he feel about the man City brought in to replace him 22 months ago? 'I don't know the guy personally,' he says. 'But looking at him from the outside, he comes across as autocratic. It's either his way or the highway and I think it's more difficult to be like that in the modern age with modern footballers.
'You have to understand that your decisions can have an impact on players. I'm not sure he indulges players, tries to get to know them or understand them. I'm not sure he's that type of manager.
'To be honest, there's not a wrong or right way of doing things and, at the end of the day, it comes down to results.
'He looks very focused and very driven in terms of what he gets from his players. But will they all love him when he leaves? I would think probably not. And only time will tell if the potential of the group he has is realised.'
But what about Tevez? In the television studio that night Hughes took the opposing view to Graeme Souness, who condemned the City striker for allegedly refusing to come on as a second-half substitute against Bayern Munich.
'You judge people on how you find them, and the relationship you have with them, and during the time I had him as a player he was fantastic,' says Hughes.

Premier League and that was their ambition. But it was not my ambition for them.
'Conversations I was having about players I wanted to bring in were not going well. I read that as them maybe not wanting to keep Fulham in the top half of the Premier League.
'There was the date of June 1 (when his contract needed to be renewed) and the closer it got, the less inclined I was to sign it because it would have meant me committing further than the one year I had left.
'I had real concerns about the age of certain players and I came to the conclusion that it would be better just to shake hands and walk away. Fulham were probably a bit too honest with me. They were saying, "We know exactly what you're about, Mark, but really we are just quite happy to stay in the Premier League".'
But Hughes says he will be back. 'I regret not being in a job at this time of year,' he says. 'That's the animal I am.
'I am comfortable with the decision I made and I am fortunate to be in a position where I can just walk away. I said when I left Man City that I didn't want to compromise myself in terms of decisions that I made.
'I'm a manager and that's what I feel I should be doing. I shouldn't be in the house cleaning the kitchen floor.'
Presumably he'll put his mop down come 1.30pm on Sunday.

Mark Hughes to have more talks with QPR

MARK Hughes will have more talks with Queens Park Rangers before he decides whether to succeed Neil Warnock as manager of the Premier League club.

Hughes went to the club's Loftus Rd ground with adviser Kia Joorabchian for talks with chief executive Philip Beard about taking over at the west London club, who sacked Warnock on Sunday.

He said later the talks had gone well but he had not yet agreed to become the club's next manager.

The former Wales, Manchester City, Blackburn Rovers and Fulham manager has been out of work since his departure from Craven Cottage in June.

Although Gianfranco Zola, Rafael Benitez, Roberto Di Matteo, Sven-Goran Eriksson and Steve Bruce have been linked with the position, Hughes has been the leading candidate from the off.

When asked if he had agreed to become the manager, Hughes said: "We're not at that point at this moment. We are still discussing the ideas the club have and I have to think very carefully about what's been said today and overnight and then we will come back in the morning.

'I'm pleased with how it's gone but nothing is confirmed yet. We still have a lot to discuss but it went really well today. We will see what happens.

'There's a will to get to where we both feel comfortable with what's ahead. I have to be clear in my mind this is the right decision for me and QPR have to be confident in their own mind.'

Meanwhile QPR owner Tony Fernandes has defended himself on Twitter after fans attacked him for sacking Warnock.

The Malaysian businessman dismissed Warnock with the west London side just a point above the Premier League relegation zone and without a win in their last eight league matches.

But many supporters felt veteran English manager Warnock should have had more time to turn the club around especially as last season he led them back to the top flight after a 15-year absence.

Responding to one angry post, Fernandes said: "Easy to call me an idiot. But its (it's) harder to make decisions. (It) may be the wrong one and ill (I'll) be the idiot and ill (I'll) go but at least ill (I'll) stand up and be counted."

And in another Twitter message, Fernandes, also the owner of Formula One's Team Lotus, said: "Not expecting all to be pleased but as a leader I have to make decisions.

"Indecision will kill everything. Time will tell if its (it's) the right decision," said Fernandes, who made his name by buying and then reviving the fortunes of airline Air Asia.

Not all the Twitter traffic directed Fernandes's way since Warnock's sacking has been critical and, responding to a message of support, he said: "Thank you. I apologise to the fans I have upset by this decision and I thank all of those who are keeping the faith."

Akhirnya Hughes kembali melatih :)

Hughes Resmi Gantikan Warnock di QPR

http://klimg.com/bola.net/library/p/headline/0000065492.jpg

(fmd/mxm)

QPR: Hughes Salah Satu Manajer Terbaik Dunia

http://klimg.com/bola.net/library/p/headline/0000065641.jpg

Kamis, 12 Januari 2012 | 14:58

http://www.beritasatu.com/media/images/medium/12012012145933.jpg

Tapi, apakah Hughes mampu?

Review: Debut Hughes Bersama QPR Berujung Kekalahan

Alan Pardew (kiri) menyalami Mark Hughes © AFP

Mark Hughes Kecam Mundurnya Jadwal Sidang Terry

http://klimg.com/bola.net/library/p/headline/0000067773.jpg

(espn/row)
