Reds to contest Community Shield


The FA has announced that United will take on Chelsea in the 2010 Community Shield match on Sunday 8 August.

The annual curtain-raiser to the domestic season is traditionally contested by the league champions and the FA Cup winners but with Carlo Ancelotti's side claiming the double last term, the Reds will take them on at Wembley as Barclays Premier League runners-up.

The fixture is a repeat of last year’s Community Shield which ended 2-2 draw in normal time, with Nani and Wayne Rooney scoring for United. Chelsea then won the resulting penalty shoot-out to deny the Reds a third consecutive Shield success.

United have won the Shield 14 times outright, dating back to 1908. The most recent triumph was in 2008 when Sir Alex Ferguson's then English and European champions beat FA Cup winners Portsmouth 3-1 on penalties. The Reds have shared the Shield four times - prior to the rule change when draws were then settled via spot-kicks.

Almost 86,000 fans attended the 2009 Community Shield with The FA distributing all proceeds to nominated community and charitable projects across the country.

London - Laga Community Shield yang menandai pembukaan Premier League musim 2010/2011 telah ditetapkan. Pertandingan digelar pada awal Agustus 2010, mempertemukan Chelsea dan Manchester United.

"FA Community Shield tahun ini akan memeprtemukan double winners Chelsea melawan runner-up Premier League Manchester Untied di Stadion Wembley dan laga tersebut digelar pada hari Minggu 8 Agustus," demikian keterangan yang disampaikan FA melalui situs resminya, Kamis (10/6/2010) petang WIB.

MU merupakan pemegang gelar Community Shield terbanyak dengan 17 trofi. Sementara Chelsea sejauh ini baru memiliki empat gelar.

Duel "London Biru" versus "Manchester Merah" Agustus mendatang sekaligus menjadi yang ketiga dalam kurun waktu empat tahun terakhir.

Tahun 2007, MU menjadi juara denagn menekuk Chelsea 3-0 di babak adu penalti. Sedangkan di waktu reguler, kedua tim bermain imbang 1-1.

Si Biru berhasil melakukan revans pada tahun lalu, dengan mengatasi Setan Merah 4-1 juga melalui penalty shoot out setelah di waktu normal keduanya berbagi angka 2-2.

Shield Trivia

The highest-scoring Shield match took place in 1911 when Manchester United beat Swindon Town 8-4. In the following year, some of the Shield proceeds were donated to the Lord Mayor of London’s “Titanic” disaster fund.

Neither team involved in the Shield match in 1950 was a club side. A “World Cup Team” comprising players from the England squad for the World Cup in Brazil defeated a “Canadian Touring Team” comprising players from an FA party that had toured Canada in the same year – 4-2 at Stamford Bridge.

In 1967 Tottenham goalkeeper Pat Jennings scored a goal from his own penalty area against Manchester United at Old Trafford :D. Alex Stepney was the embarrassed ‘keeper at the other end and the match finished 3-3.

The Shield was taken to Wembley in 1974 and 67,000 saw Liverpool beat Leeds 6-5 on penalties after a 1-1 draw. On a hot afternoon when tempers became frayed, Billy Bremner and Kevin Keegan were sent off.

In the 1980s and early ‘90s the Shield was shared by the competing clubs for six months each when the match was drawn after ninety minutes. The penalty shoot-out was re-introduced in 1993. (Jadi semoga ngga ada yg bingung lagi apa itu Shared Title :D)

Leeds and Liverpool played a seven-goal thriller in 1992. A rampant Eric Cantona netted a hat-trick for Leeds but was destined to become a Manchester United player during the season that followed.

Manchester United appeared in no fewer than seven Shield matches in the 1990s – winning four, drawing one and losing two. In 2003 they featured in their 22nd Shield match overall.
