COME IN NUMBER 2
Meet the man behind the main man, the assistant managers
ARCHIE KNOX (1985-1991)

Archie Knox, who followed Sir Alex to United from Aberdeen, was a big loss for the Gaffer when he departed for Rangers.
“I never dreamt… that Archie would even think about leaving. His decision did make me feel vulnerable for a while,” said Sir Alex in his autobiography, after Knox accepted Walter Smith’s invitation north of the border.
The story goes that Knox received a better offer from Glasgow, so good in fact that he didn’t hang around to see United beat Barcelona in Rotterdam in the 1991 UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup final. However , his loyalty through the early years was influential in seeing Sir Alex emerge the other side of the club’s disappointing start under him, and he played an integral part in United’s first piece of silverware.

BRIAN KIDD (1991-1998)

“Eusebio, we say Kiddo,” goes the tribute from the Stretford End, and drafting in one of the heroes of 1968 was a masterstroke: our Kidd was back.
“Give us a hand with the first team, will you Kiddo?” said Sir Alex on the training ground, before the duo pioneered an era of domestic dominance in the ‘90s. “The promotion of Brian was an instant success,” said Sir Alex. “We forged the strong alliance that was to prove so fruitful over the next seven years.”
“We’re like an old married couple,” Kidd said of his relationship with Sir Alex in 1991. “The Boss is a very honest and loyal man, which means everyone knows where they stand. If he’s got something to say he’ll say it to your face, which I really appreciate.”
STEVE McCLAREN (1999-2001)

“I had instructed Eric Horrison, our former youth coach, and Les Kershaw, Director of the Academy, to scour England for the best candidates in terms of coaching ability and work ethic. They kept coming back to Steve (McClaren) ,” said Sir Alex of McClaren’s appointment in 1999. “I was sure he was the right man.” And McClaren was equally effusive about Sir Alex: “He amazes me, day in, day out, with the utmost respect, and not just players.”

JIM RYAN and MIKE PHELAN (2001-2002)

Steve McClaren’s defection to Middlesbrough in 2001 saw ex-players Jim Ryan and Mike Phelan fill the posts of assistant manager and first team coach respectively. “Jim Ryan’s experience, knowledge of the game and conscientiousness made him a marvelous stand-in,” wrote Sir Alex.
But the manager would soon try and find someone younger, someone with “fresher legs”, and so the appointment, albeit a successful one, was short-term.
CARLOS QUEIROZ (2002-2003, 2004-…)

When Queiroz (first) became Sir Alex’s number two in June 2002, he arrived as a virtual unknown to most United fans. The Gaffer, however, had done his homework.
“I spoke to two or three players who had worked under him, and they said he was fantastic,” said Sir Alex. “Then I spoke to Luis Figo and a few other Portuguese players and they absolutely raved about him. Hiring Carlos was one of the best decisions I ever made.”
“Sir Alex Ferguson is very special,” says Queiroz. “His ability as a leader is unique; not only does he have a wonderful wisdom and experience in the game, but he also shows everyone that he believes in us.”
WALTER SMITH (2003-2004)

In between Queiroz’s two stints at Old Trafford, toward the end of 2003/04 season, Sir Alex’s close friend Walter Smith joined him on a short-term contract. “There are few people in the game with his experience, knowledge and technical ability,” said Sir Alex of Smith, his assistant at the 1986 World Cup.
“There are few bigger challenges in football than helping a successful side sustain their achievements,” said Smith of his brief interlude with M16. “I have huge admiration for what Sir Alex has achieved at United and I was excited to be a part of it.”
