On tour with Manchester United: The biggest team in the world? Try telling these guys...

There was no escape from the 90-degree heat and stifling humidity when Sir Alex Ferguson and his Manchester United players flew into Toronto from Chicago and little sign that the first match of their North American tour against Celtic on Friday night is attracting anything more than a ripple of interest locally.

The Toronto Star ignored the game completely despite giving a sizeable show to the reaction Thierry Henry's move to New York Red Bull and Argentina's offer of a four-year contract to Diego Maradona, while The Globe and Mail decided it was worthy of a paltry three paragraphs in the soccer round-up of their sports pull-out.

The local sports network preferred to focus on the Toronto Argonauts and their first home game in the Canadian Football League season, while running a particularly tragic feature about one of the Blue Jays baseball players on a seemingly continuous loop. It was poignant first time around but lost some of its dramatic effect when you saw it for the fourth time before breakfast.

Still, United's tepid welcome to Canada was nothing compared to a colleague out here with us who checked into his room at a very nice hotel in downtown Toronto only to find a rogue pubic hair on the soap in his bathroom. I'm sure that might be considered a complimentary perk elsewhere in the world - indeed, I've stayed in some places where it was expected - but not in Canada.

At least he'd made it here. Another reporter who was due to arrive in Toronto several hours earlier than us last night was still stuck in Philadelphia (the place, not the cheese) as we enjoyed breakfast this morning, some 24 hours after he had left the UK.

It is a reminder of the logistical nightmares of these trips, and with Philly, Kansas City and Houston yet to come on the tour, it would be a miracle if the rest of us weren't beset by similar problems at some point or other.

Anyway, you want to hear about Manchester United not us. Well, I'm pleased to report that chief executive David Gill has flown in to join up with the tour after attending one of his sons' graduation, although too late to see the launch of United's new kit at Niketown in Chicago last night - a retro number that harks back to the 70s and abandons the frankly weird black chevron that dominated the last new United kit when it was launched a year ago.

I could go on about the new strip and quote extensively from Nike about how it's made from recycled plastic bottles and they have put the word 'believe' inside the club crest, bless 'em, but let's see it for what it is: an opportunity to fleece supporters again simply because the club have a new sponsor.

Even with United's global appeal, it remains to be seen if the limited media interest is reflected in ticket sales for tomorrow night's game which is being held at the Rogers Center in the shadow of Toronto's famous CN Tower. With Sir Alex and his players only jetting in a day before the game and holding a Press conference tonight, you have to wonder - particularly with tickets for a game between United's scratch side and Celtic are costing as much as $150.

Even the company promoting the event were going to extreme measures today. Along with an e-mailed invitation to the Press conference was a reminder that we were welcome to go down at 2pm local time to see the astroturf at the Rogers Center being replaced by 'real grass'.

Now I have known journalists do some desperate things in search of a story - many of them involving Sky Sports News reporters standing outside some obscure ground on transfer deadline day trying to talk up a Bosman free - but never, not ever, have they resorted to watching grass grow.

Then again, this trip is going to last more than two weeks so let's not get ahead of ourselves.

It might not have been the white heat of the Premier League – but Dimitar Berbtov showed Sir Alex Ferguson he still knows where the goal is.

The Bulgarian showed flashes of the creative genius that persuaded the United boss to part with the best part of £30m for him, as his team started their North America tour with a victory.

Berbatov, who scored just 12 times last season, helped himself to a well-taken opener, laid one on a plate for second-half substitute Danny Welbeck and claimed an assist for fellow sub Tom Cleverley’s strike.

Spearheading the United attack, the languid striker was at the centre of most of United’s best moments.

Darren Fletcher was handed the United captaincy, with Chris Smalling named in the team for the club’s first friendly following his arrival from Fulham.

He partnered Jonny Evans at the back and they were flanked by the Da Silva twins Rafael and Fabio. Mame Biram Diouf started in attack alongside Berbatov.

United, who had been training in Chicago for four days before the game, made a bright start.

Paul Scholes released Gabriel Obertan in the second minute but his cross was intercepted by defender Andreas Hinkel.

Then Fabio hared away down the left and showed good skill to deliver the ball into the area, only for Darren O’Dea to head clear.

United kept up the pressure and Obertan dragged a shot wide in the 10th minute before Berbatov headed over the bar.

Celtic again found themselves on the back foot 19 minutes later when Rafael scampered forward. He picked out Obertan perfectly but the French winger was wasteful, his cross-cum-shot evading Berbatov.

The Bulgarian striker was further frustrated in the 30th minute when his effort went the wrong side of the post.

However Berbatov got his reward four minutes later – a cool finish after a superb first touch following a cross from Diouf.

Celtic hauled themselves back level in the 64th minute when Smalling got himself in a tangle as Joe Ledley surged into the box, tripping the Celtic man.

Former City striker Georgios Samaras struck the resultant spot-kick past Edwin Van der Sar.

Reds young guns Federico Macheda, Ritchie De Laet, Cleverley and Welbeck came off the bench and the young Mancunian striker was the benificiary of a smart square ball across the box from Berbatov to slot a simple second United goal home.

Cleverley added the third, again thanks to the Bulgarian, with a late deflected effort.

TORONTO - Manchester United mengawali tur musim panasnya dengan positif. Menghadapi klub Skotlandia Glasgow Celtic di Rogers Center, Sabtu (17/7/2010) pagi WIB, pasukan Setan Merah berhasil meraup kemenangan 3-1.

Untuk pertama kalinya, United memamerkan jersey baru mereka dengan sponsor anyar, Aon. Tidak perlu diragukan lagi besarnya popularitas United di benua Amerika. Jumlah penonton yang mengenakan kostum merah kebanggaan Red Devils jauh mengungguli para suporter Celtic dengan kostum hijau-putih.

Sir Alex Ferguson secara mengejutkan mempercayakan Darren Fletcher sebagai kapten, kendati Ryan Giggs juga tampil sebagai starter. Bek anyar Chris Smailling pun melakoni debutnya bersama United di barisan starting XI.

Dominasi permainan Red Devils sudah terlihat sejak awal laga, dengan Gabriel Obertan dan Mame Biram Diouf bergantian mencetak peluang. Kerjasama itu akhirnya membuahkan hasil di menit 33, ketika kombinasi umpan Obertan dan Diouf berhasil dimaksimalkan bomber Dimitar Berbatov melalui tendangan first time. Kiper Lukasz Zaluska tidak memiliki kesempatan sama sekali untuk mempertahankan gawangnya.

Peluang terbaik Celtic di babak pertama adalah melalui bek Charlie Mulgrew, dua menit sebelum turun minum. Stadium: Lincoln Financial Field is the home of the NFL’s Philadelphia Eagles and has a capacity of 67,594. Sporting icon: Ex-world heavyweight champion boxers Joe Frazier and Sonny Liston are the best-known Philly sportsmen. On the football front, former Reading winger Bobby Convey also calls Philly home. He helped the Berkshire outfit win promotion to the Premier League as Championship winners in 2006. That year he also played three games in the World Cup finals.

Did you know? The famous steps scene from Rocky was filmed at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and a bronze statue of the titular character that featured in Rocky III is situated just outside the building.

Philadelphia Union - Club History

Philadelphia was awarded Major League Soccer's 16th team on February 28th, 2008. Led by the ownership group of Keystone Sports and Entertainment, LLC, the club operated under the name MLS Philadelphia 2010 for most of 2008 and the early portion of 2009. The combination of extensive grassroots support spearheaded by the Sons of Ben and a public/private partnership between Philadelphia Union, the State of Pennsylvania, Delaware County and the City of Chester enabled the construction of a state-of-the-art soccer stadium and convinced MLS that the Philadelphia region deserved a soccer team.

After thorough historical and fan research, the club announced its name,crest and colors on May 11th, 2009 at Philadelphia's City Hall. Philadelphia Union alludes to the Union of the Thirteen Colonies, of which Philadelphia was the first capital. The club’s name and crest incorporate Philadelphia’s rich colonial history and vital role in the creation of our nation – the Union. The team's name was chosen following a 'Fan Vote' held between January 19, 2009 and February 6, 2009.

Philadelphia Union's primary colors are navy blue and gold, representing the Continental Army's uniforms during the American Revolutionary War. The light blue in the middle of the badge is derived from the civic flag of Philadelphia and is a tribute to the Sons of Ben supporters club. The team's primary crest is circular, symbolizing unity. The thirteen gold stars displayed along the base of the crest represent the original Thirteen Colonies, while the shield's contour derives from the Philadelphia coat of arms. Peter Nowak was introduced as the first ever Team Manager of Philadelphia Union on May 29th, 2009. The club's first players were then acquired on November 25th via the MLS Expansion Draft.

On March 25th, 2010, Philadelphia played its first ever match, a 2-0 loss to Seattle Sounders FC. On April 10th, 2010, the club's Inaugural Home Opener, Philadelphia notched the first victory in team history beating D.C. United 3-2 in front of 34,870 fans.

When I played in England [with Portsmouth and Swindon], I always hoped for a big draw in the FA Cup so that I could get a chance to play against teams like United. It’s funny the opportunity has presented itself after having moved back to the US!

Which players are you most looking forward to playing against?
We have lots of respect for all the players and it’s an honour and a privilege to play against them. I can’t wait to see them up close and personal, but we all want to show we can match them if we can, particularly Giggsy and Paul Scholes. I’ve been watching them play for what feels like forever. You still get the sense that Scholes can dictate the pace of a game and it’s clear they both possess great motivation and fitness – there’s a reason they’ve been able to stay at the top for so long.

Are the rest of the Philadelphia squad excited?
Very, but it’s been an exciting time to be a Philadelphia player; we opened our new stadium recently and there’s a great buzz around the city. The new arena only holds about 18,000, so we’ll be playing United at the Lincoln Financial Stadium, where previously we’ve been getting crowds of 35,000. Our fans are very vocal and very knowledgeable about the game, so I think you’ll see a strong following.

Who should United look out for on the Union team?
We have some very good veterans, of which I’m the oldest! We have Alejandro Moreno, a Venezualan international and a real workhorse, always creating havoc. Sebastien Le Toux is a French lad and a fans’ favourite, he's full of energy and gets among the goals. In midfield with me we have Fred, another Brazilian. He’s very exciting to watch and brings flair and trickery to a game. He finally got on the scoresheet recently and I’m sure he’ll go on to score a few more for us. At the back we have our captain, Danny Califf, formerly with the US national team. Then we have an exciting 19-year-old called Roger Torres, a tiny guy who’s very savvy and makes really difficult passes.

What can United fans expect from Philadelphia the city?
There’s a lot of greenery and countryside close to the city. I love it out here and I’m sure they will, too. I grew up a couple of hours away and it has that same feel as New York.

Gabriel Obertan’s well-taken winner ensured a second successive tour victory for the Reds who ran out 1-0 winners over Philadelphia Union at the Lincoln Financial Field.

Obertan collected a clever pass from the impressive Danny Welbeck and slotted home from close range 14 minutes from time.

Sir Alex made six changes to the side that started against Celtic in Toronto five days earlier. Tomasz Kuszczak started in goal behind a back four of John O’Shea, Wes Brown, Jonny Evans and Fabio. Gabriel Obertan and Ryan Giggs took up the wide positions once more with Tom Cleverley, who claimed United’s third goal in the win over Celtic, given his chance alongside Paul Scholes in the centre of midfield. Danny Welbeck, another scorer against the Bhoys, partnered Federico Macheda in attack.

Just as against Celtic the Reds started brightly and went close to breaking the deadlock on three minutes when Macheda put Obertan in down the right. The Frenchman took a touch before letting fly from a tight angle, but his low shot found the side netting. The winger was involved again six minutes later when he connected with Welbeck’s fine cross, but his well-struck volley flew wide.

Having soaked up United’s early pressure, the home side had their first sight of goal on 12 minutes when Danny Mwanga worked space to find Alejandro Moreno in the area. Thankfully for United the striker couldn’t connect properly with his shot allowing Kuszczak to claim easily.

Proceedings turned somewhat scrappy thereafter with both teams struggling to find their rhythm. Welbeck did his utmost to liven things up just after the half-hour mark. After firing a looping 25-yard volley just wide of Brad Knighton’s goal, he was denied by a fine stop from the Philly goalkeeper from close range after lovely wing play from Fabio.

Sebastien Le Toux was presented with an equally great chance at the other end after being found by the lively Mwanga. But the Frenchman dragged his low effort just wide of Kuszczak’s left-hand post.

Peter Nowak made seven substitutions at the start of the second period and as the new personnel settled in Welbeck almost caught them off guard when he hooked an effort over his left shoulder which dropped just wide of substitute keeper Brian Perk’s far post.

At the other end, two of the Zolos newest introductions almost made an immediate. First, Jack McInerney blasted a low drive inches wide of Kuszczak’s far post after being well found by Mwanga. Soon after Nick Zimmerman stung the palms of the Polish stopper with a well struck effort from 20 yards.

Sir Alex followed his opposite number in making a raft of substitutions just after the hour-mark with Corry Evans – making his first team debut – Darren Fletcher, Rafael, Chris Smalling and Dimitar Berbatov all entering the fray.

A frenzied few minutes followed with the Reds having a penalty shout turned down when Obertan appeared to have his heels clipped by Toni Stahl and Kuszczak brilliantly pushing away Danny Califf’s flicked header from Kyle Nakazawa’s free-kick.

The breakthrough finally arrived on 76 minutes when two of United’s liveliest performers combined. Welbeck picked up possession on the right wing and slotted a lovely pass into the onrushing Obertan who finished neatly from close range.

Three minutes later Berbatov rattled the woodwork after picking up a loose cross and turning and letting fly, while Giggs was denied a stonewall penalty six minutes from time after being blatantly blocked in the area.

The Reds survived a last-minute scare when Zimmerman’s cross was blasted over by Le Toux from three yards out to ensure a second consecutive tour victory.

Sedangkan United masih meraba menata kembali fisik dan kondisi pasca liburan akhir musim.

Philadelphia - Manhcester United kembali meraih kemenangan di tur pra-musim mereka di Amerika Utara. Kali ini Setan Merah mengatasi Philadelphia Union 1-0 lewat gol Gabriel Obertan.

Laga antara MU kontra Philadelphia digelar di Lincoln Financiel Field, Kamis (22/7/2010) pagi WIB. Tiga menit laga berjalan, MU hampir membuka skor lewat kerjasama Federico Macheda dan Gabriel Obertan. Namun eksekusi yang dilepas nama kedua masih melenceng.

Enam menit berselang Obertan kembali mengahdirkan peluang. Tendangan volinya yang menyambut umpan silan Danny Welbeck masih melebar dari sasaran.

Lima menit babak kedua berjalan, peluang Philadelphia lewat JackMcInerney masih melebar. Setelahnya, kiper MU Tomasz Kuszczak berhasil menangkal serangan wakil Negeri Paman Sam yang hadir lewat tandukan Danny Califf usai memanfaatkan tendangan bebas dari Kyle Nakazawa.

Kebuntuan dalam laga ini hadir di menit ke-76. Gol ini menjadi milik Manchester United. Memanfaatkan kesalahan dari pemain Philadelphia, Welbeck berhasil merebut bola dan melepaskan umpan matang yang gagal dicegah tiga pemain belakang tuan rumah. Bola selanjutnya diterima Obertan dan pemain Prancis itu melepaskan ekeskusi yang gagal dicegah kiper Brian Perk.

Empat menit berselang, Dimitar Berbatov hampir membawa MU memimpin. Namun usaha yang dilakukan striker Bulgaria itu masih membentur mistar gawang.

Setelah ini, The Red Devils dijadwalkan akan melakoni kontra Kansas City Wizards (25/7/2010), MLS All-Stars (28/7/2010), dan Chivas Guadalajara (30/7/2010).

MEN - July 26, 2010

United slipped to surprise defeat against the Kansas City Wizards in the latest stop on their North American tour.

The result was a major scalp for the Major League Soccer side who are currently lying eighth in their Conference and played most of the game with 10 men.

The one consolation for manager United Sir Alex Ferguson was the return of Nani, who played 68 minutes at Arrowhead Stadium in his first outing since suffering a dislocated collarbone before the World Cup.

However, the winger made little impact as United went down to their first tour defeat following wins over Celtic and Philadelphia Union.

Davy Arnaud opened the scoring for the hosts before Dimitar Berbatov levelled from the penalty spot after a challenge which saw the Wizards' Jimmy Conrad sent off.

The hosts quickly responded with Kei Kamara restoring their lead before the break.

United raised the tempo in the second half but they were unable to breach the determined home defence.

United almost went ahead the eighth minute when they were awarded a free-kick following Shavar Thomas' challenge on Berbatov.

After Nani saw his initial effort come back off the wall, Paul Scholes reacted quickest to the loose ball but his effort was kept out by Jimmy Nielsen's superb parry.

United goalkeeper Ben Amos was making his first appearance of the tour but found himself picking the ball out of the net after 11 minutes.

Arnaud latched on to a through ball from Kamara after being played onside by Rafael and kept a cool head to drill home into the corner.

United's defence was almost breached again in the 23rd minute when Michael Harrington delivered a cross from the right but former Crystal Palace midfielder Ryan Smith scuffed his effort with just Amos to beat.

Nani then went on a surging run but Nielsen blocked his shot, before Ryan Giggs was booked after a shoving match with Harrington.

United drew level in the 41st minute when Berbatov equalised from the spot with a cheeky finish. The Bulgarian won the kick himself after being bundled over by Conrad, who saw red for the challenge.

The 10-man Wizards were not deterred and regained the lead a minute later when Kamara got on the end of a cross from Smith to head home, although replays could not conclusively prove that the whole ball had crossed the line.

United set the tempo in the second half and Mame Biram Diouf saw a shot saved by substitute goalkeeper Eric Kronberg in the 46th minute.

Darron Gibson then sent an effort high over the bar following a Giggs free-kick.

It was a frustrating time for United and Scholes went close in the 61st minute but again the Wizards held firm.

United stepped up the pressure in the final minutes and the last chance came and went when Tom Cleverley released fellow substitute Danny Welbeck but he fired just wide.

Kl baca dr timeline mereka yg nonton macthnya td pagi, refnya "amatir + lebay", dan kekalahan United memang karna performa para pemain terutama youngster yaitu Rafael, Macheda, CLeverly, Gibso, Smailling jeblok. Giggs n Scholes pun yg berpengalaman harus bekerja keras dan terkena provokasi lawan yg bermain terlalu serius padahal ini hanya friendly match...

SAF nampaknya meski kecewa dgn hasil, namun tidak mempermasalahkannya karna ini hanya friendly match yg tujuannya untuk meningkatkan fitness para pemainnya. Namun perlu dpt perhatian adalah para youngster yg nampakanya msh blm maksimal. Rafael-Fabio msh sering tdk fokus n cpt kembali menjaga pertahanan, Cleverly-Gibson terlihat msh sdkt kurang jam terbang, Smailling msh perlu adaptasi dan digembleng lbh keras lg, Welbeck-Macheda msh blm maksimal dlm kreatifitas dan mencetak goalnya, but mereka msh muda dan akan terus berkembang lbh baik nantinya. Namun Amos terlihat menjanjikan di bawah mistar dan De Leat sepertinya makin berkembang...

Namun diluar youngster, nampaknya permaian senior terutama Nani dan Berba makin berkembang SEMOGA mereka dpt terus meningkat dan konsisten terutam Berba...

Kekalahan yang semoga membuka mata GLAZER klo United butuh tambahan pemaen,he... Fergie dah lakuin yang terbaik yang dia bisa. Emang kekalahan ini tidak berarti United tidak bisa kompetitif musim depan tapi bisa jadi tanda United butuh tambahan kekuatan.

Semoga United bisa ambil pelajaran dari kekalahan ini. Mending kalah di awal (pre-season) dan konsisten menang di BPL nanti dari pada sukses di pre-season tapi jadi lengah di liga.

Sir Alex Ferguson admits his young defenders struggled to cope with the Kansas City Wizards' attacking threat during the pre-season tour defeat.

A youthful United backline of Ben Amos (in goal), Rafael, Chris Smalling, Jonny Evans and Ritchie De Laet were given a somewhat torrid time by the Wizards' energetic front men, particularly the lively Teal Bunbury and matchwinner Kei Kamara.

"I thought the inexperience of the defenders showed in the first 15 minutes," the boss told reporters at his post-match press conference. "That was a bit of a handicap and we never quite recovered from that.

"Bunbury was a handful physically - he gave us a hard time that way. But I felt young Ben Amos organised the defenders and calmed them down.

"The things we are looking for from the players are coming, but our possession of the ball today was ragged at times. Normally we are much better. Hopefully that will come with the games.

"It was a competitive match in a good atmosphere," he added. "And despite the result I am satisfied with the progress we are making."

Sir Alex also revealed that Darren Fletcher and John O'Shea are likely to miss Wednesday's match in Houston against the MLS All-Stars after picking up niggling injuries.

Giggs: Young lads will learn

Ryan Giggs has played in too many pre-season games to be too downhearted about United's surprise 2-1 loss to Kansas City Wizards.

Although disappointed by the defeat - the first of Tour 2010 after two victories over Celtic and Philadelphia Union - the Reds' longest-serving player will dwell more on the positive aspects of the encounter.

The Welshman told ManUtd.com's Gemma Thompson: "It's always disappointing when you lose. While credit must go to the Wizards, we didn't play well and their second goal was a killer, especially as it came so quickly after we'd got ourselves back into the game.

"But the big thing about pre-season is getting your fitness right and this was a good run-out for us. It was hard work in the heat, especially when we were a goal down chasing the game."

The Reds' starting line-up was the least experienced of the tour so far - goalkeeper Ben Amos is 19 years younger than the man he deputised for, Edwin van der Sar, while the back four have a little over a century of United appearances between them. Giggs feels the younger members of the side will benefit from this outing in America.

"It's always an experience when you're playing at a great stadium, in front of a good crowd against good opposition," said Giggs.

"You learn something from every game you play when you're younger and you always try to take something from it even when you lose. Hopefully the young lads will be better for the experience today."

KANSAS - Sir Alex Ferguson sepertinya tidak terlalu kaget dengan kekalahan Manchester United dari Kansas City Wizards, Senin (26/7/2010) pagi WIB. Pelatih Skotlandia mengklaim, kurangnya pengalaman barisan defender United memungkinkan klub MLS mencuri keunggulan.

Wizards membuka keunggulan ketika laga baru berjalan 11 menit melalui Davy Arnaud. Dimitar Berbatov sempat menyamakan kedudukan melalui titik 12 pas, empat menit sebelum babak pertama berakhir. Namun, header Kei Kamara satu menit berselang menyegel kemenangan tuan rumah 2-1 atas Red Devils.

Ini merupakan kekalahan pertama United dalam tur pra-musim mereka di benua Amerika. Sebelumnya, runner-up Premier League mencatat hasil sempurna kontra Glasgow Celtic (3-1) dan Philadelphia Union (1-0).

Kendati demikian, Fergie tampaknya tidak terlalu terkejut melihat hasil yang diraih anak-anak asuhnya. Dia berkeras, kurangnya pengalaman para bek muda United sudah terlihat sejak laga dimulai.

Houston bow for Chicharito?

Sir Alex has confirmed Javier 'Chicharito' Hernandez could play a part in Wednesday's friendly against the MLS All-Stars.

The Mexican striker will link up with his new team-mates on Monday in Houston following some time off after an impressive display for his country at the World Cup.

Sir Alex is looking forward to working with the 22-year-old, who was snapped up by the club towards the end of last season.

"We were lucky that we identified him before the World Cup and got the deal the done," explained the boss.

"If we'd have waited until after the tournament he could have cost us maybe two to three times the money. It was good work by our scouting department - they did a really good job.

"It depends on his condition when he joins us in Houston but we hope to give him a bit of football on Wednesday night."

Sir Alex also revealed the plans for Friday night's match against Hernandez's former club Chivas in Guadalajara.

"He'll play against his old club in the first half and then play for them against us in the second. It'll be a nice tribute to his old club."

Team spokesman Rob Thomson said Monday the new tickets were sold as the team opened the first 2,011 season tickets for next year to sales following the victory over the Red Devils.

Kansas City is scheduled to move next June to a $200 million, 18,500-seat stadium under construction at Village West.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- In the aftermath of the Kansas City Wizards' 2-1 win over mighty Manchester United, coach Peter Vermes tried to be humble. Central defender Jimmy Conrad did not.

"MLS owns the city of Manchester right now," crowed Conrad, who was sent off in the 39th minute.

A crowd of 52,342 -- largest ever to see a soccer match in Kansas City -- watched Davy Arnaud and Kei Kamara score first-half goals and then fend off repeated shots on goal in the second half as the Wizards of the MLS handed the Red Devils their first loss in a four-city tour of the United States.

Manchester City lost to the New York Red Bulls earlier Sunday.

United played without several of its biggest stars, though the Wizards were down to 10 men after Conrad was shown a straight red card for a sliding tackle on Dimitar Berbatov.

"It's a great accomplishment for our team, for our organization," Vermes said. "But in the end, it's an exhibition. And what matters most for us is the league, and trying to win an MLS championship. Look, they've played in Champions League finals. We're not there yet. By any means."

City officials were hoping a big, enthusiastic crowd, drawn partly to get their first glimpse at Arrowhead Stadium following a $375 million makeover, might also boost chances of hosting World Cup games in 2018 or 2022 -- if the U.S gets to host.

"Events like tonight's where we're going to have over 50,000 people in the building for a soccer game I think will be a big selling point for both FIFA and U.S. Soccer when it comes time to make the decision on which stadium to bring the World Cup to," said Kansas City Chiefs owner Clark Hunt, who lobbied to bring Manchester United to Arrowhead.

With the unexpected win, Hunt and the others got all they wanted and more.

Backup goalkeeper Eric Kronberg replaced Jimmy Nielsen at halftime and made five saves for the Wizards, who have not won an MLS title since 2000 and are 4-8-4 this season.

In the 11th minute, Arnaud beat United's offside trap and took a well-placed through ball from Kamara. Given the one-on-one against backup keeper Ben Amos, Arnaud dribbled into the penalty area and calmly slotted the ball into the lower left corner.

Berbatov equalized from the penalty spot in the 41st minute after Conrad was ejected for a sliding tackle on him.

Replays appeared to show Conrad made contact with the ball before Berbatov went down, but referee Terry Vaughn went straight for the red card and Berbatov converted with a roller into the lower right corner.

"I know I ended up with every piece of the ball," Conrad said. "I know I had to go through him a little bit. I tried to sweep it, but I'd have to see it on replay before I could say with 100 percent certainty."

Manchester Union captain Ryan Giggs said the final score only confirmed what was already evident, that American soccer is on the rise.

"You can see it in the standard of the teams, the standard of the national team, the interest within the crowd and the fans," he said.

Kamara put the Wizards up in the 42nd minute. He headed Ryan Smith's corner kick over Amos and off the underside of the crossbar, and the ball landed just over the goal line.

"They're a big, strong team," said Red Devils coach Sir Alex Ferguson. "Athletic. Very powerful. I thought once we scored the goal we'd be all right. Too many of our shots were off target."

Manchester United's next stop will be a match against the MLS All-Stars on Wednesday in Houston.

"The game is improving in the general play of the players," said Ferguson. "Some United States players are doing well in Europe and in England, and that's the best barometer."

Four Galaxy players selected

NEW YORK -- Landon Donovan and Edson Buddle, who helped the U.S. reach the second round of the World Cup, were selected to the MLS All-Star Game on Tuesday.

The forwards were among four members of the Los Angeles Galaxy chosen for the match. Goalkeeper Donovan Ricketts and defender Omar Gonzalez were also selected. It will be Donovan's 10th appearance.

Defending champion Real Salt Lake had three players picked: defender Jamison Olave and midfielders Javier Morales and Kyle Beckerman. The All-Stars will play the 2009 English Premier League champions Manchester United on July 28 in Houston.

The MLS All-Stars were chosen in balloting by fans, players, media, coaches and general managers.

NEW YORK -- MLS All-Star coach Bruce Arena has selected San Jose Earthquakes midfielder Bobby Convey as an All-Star to replace injured Chivas USA defender Jonathan Bornstein.

Convey will be a member of the 23-man roster that will take on 2009 English Premier League champion Manchester United July 28 in Houston.

Bornstein injured his right knee Sunday in the 23rd minute of Chivas USA's SuperLiga match against the Houston Dynamo. He is expected to miss two to three weeks.

Convey has appeared in all 14 of the Earthquakes' matches and has assists on eight of the team's 18 goals this season. This is Convey's third career All-Star selection (2001, 2004).

Smalling eyes big test

New boy Chris Smalling is relishing the opportunity to test himself against the biggest stars in Major League Soccer.

United play an MLS All-Star XI in Houston on Wednesday 29 July (19:30 CDT, Thursday 30 July 01:30 BST) and the former Fulham defender is keen to make his mark.

“The first three games [on the tour] have provided us with a good challenge and to be up against the best players in the MLS will be an even bigger task for us," Smalling told media at a press conference in Houston. "I’m really looking forward to it.”

So far on tour, the Reds have beaten Celtic (3-1) and Philadelphia Eagles (1-0) before losing last Sunday against Kansas City Wizards (0-1):(. Now Sir Alex’s men face the cream of the American league, including World Cup star Landon Donovan.

“The main aim with pre-season is getting your fitness levels right,” Smalling said, “but we want to win every game and we hope we can do that on Wednesday.”

The 20-year-old officially became a Manchester United player on 1 July. Eleven days later he jetted off on pre-season tour and, along with his new team-mates, has enjoyed sampling Americans’ healthy appetite for the beautiful game.

“Every year you’ve seen soccer getting even bigger in America so it’s not surprising to see the following we’ve had on this tour,” he said. “It’s been fantastic for the players to experience.

“I’ve enjoyed everything about playing in front of big crowds and getting to know the other players. It’s been great.”

Smalling isn't the only fresh face in the Reds' camp. Mexico forward Javier Hernandez has now joined the squad following his holiday and is expected to play a small role in Houston before playing 45 minutes for both his former club, Chivas, and United in Guadalajara on Saturday.

"I’m really looking forward to playing alongside him," Smalling said. "Like him, I’m new to the club, but I’ve settled in really well over the last two weeks and I’m sure he will do, too. Everyone will make him feel welcome and hopefully he’ll have a great start to his United career."

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson believes Javier Hernandez's pace could be a crucial weapon after the Mexico striker scored in his opening game for the club.

Hernandez, who linked up with the squad for the first time this week after arriving from Chivas Guadalajara, made an instant impact in the 5-2 victory against the MLS All-Stars

The 22-year-old stepped off the bench in the second half at the Reliant Stadium and was given a rousing reception by both United and Mexican fans. With Federico Macheda getting a brace - the first after 24 seconds - and substitutes Darron Gibson and Tom Cleverley also on target, it was just the performance Ferguson was looking for.

"The one thing defenders worry about is players with speed, who get into the space behind them,'' he said of Hernandez. "When you see his goal it is an indication of that speed. The timing of his run, coming towards the ball spinning, he is going to be a threat to defenders, no question.''

Macheda made the breakthrough after being mistakenly set up by All-Stars defender Kevin Alston and he took full advantage.

Ferguson said: "We always think about Macheda that going through on the goalkeeper he is probably the best we have. He is outstanding in those positions. You always feel very confident. When he went through I expected him to score. It was a well-taken goal.''

Gibson's goal came from a free-kick after a challenge on Hernandez and he found the net with a superb effort over the wall and into the corner. Cleverley's strike was equally impressive - a cheeky flick over Wilman Conde and a cool finish that had Ferguson applauding.

"The confidence to do what he did, then the composure, it was an outstanding goal,'' said the United boss.

United showed no ill-effects following the surprise defeat by Kansas City Wizards on Sunday and Ferguson added: "The thing I was looking for was our possession of the ball. (Reuters) - Manchester United's status as a global brand has long been recognized but Wednesday it was demonstrated in vivid fashion when more than 70,000 turned out to watch them play a pre-season friendly in Texas.

There was a healthy turn-out of fans of local team Houston Dynamo among the crowd but many more in United's famous red shirts, watching Alex Ferguson's team beat a Major League Soccer 'All Star' team 5-2.

Outside the domed Reliant Stadium, Peter Holland, a Mancunian who has been resident in New York City for 33 years, was signing up some of those American 'Red Devils' to the club's USA Supporters Club which is 5,000-strong.

"United were first in the marketplace over here, the first team to make an impact on television," Holland told Reuters as fans queued up in the heat to add their names to the membership list.

"The American public are very, very knowledgeable about football, a lot of Europeans might not think that but they are smart and they saw United on television, playing fantastic football and people decided to follow them."

Andrew Wise, a 19 year old from New Orleans, was among those proudly wearing the colours, even though he has never seen the club's Old Trafford home.

"My first ever jersey was a United jersey when I was five and since then it has been United all the way. We went to England once but the only game we could go to was at Millwall," he said, referring to the London club.

ETHNIC LINES

Like many Americans, Wise rates England's Premier League as a far superior product than the domestic Major League Soccer.

"I prefer watching the English Premier League but MLS is getting better. It is still not quite there, I guess continued support for the game will help," he said.

United's support also crosses ethnic lines with the presence of new Mexican signing Javier Hernandez likely to have added more Spanish-speaking fans to the masses that had longer attachments to the team.

"I've always been a United fan, ever since I started watching them on television about five years ago. I watch more United than I do Houston Dynamo. English football is more intense and better soccer," Jose Jimenez said.

While there is such admiration for English football in general, United attracts a particular following and manager Ferguson credited that on the 'romance' attached to the club.

"We're never surprised. Everywhere our club goes they have support, as you saw it here. It's an unusual club," he said.

"Apart from its history, it's got a romance about it. I think also, credit to the club, they play the right way. We're good at developing young players with spirit, it's always been a strong part of our club.

"We were really delighted. When you go and play in the stadium tonight, the size of the crowd and the atmosphere, you're motivated by that. To come out, see the stadium, good pitch, big crowd, perfect for them."

Less than 24 hours after being appointed interim manager of the Mexico national team, Chivas vice president Efrain Flores spoke exclusively to ManUtd.com...

So Manchester United will be the first visitors to Chivas’ new stadium?
That’s right. Everybody at Chivas is delighted to have Manchester United in town for our opening ceremony. We’re looking forward to meeting everybody involved with the club and we hope the game is a big success.

What prompted the change of ground?
It’s a way of saying thank you to the fans. The owners recognise the huge support that the Chivas fans give the team so they wanted to build a new stadium for them. It’s probably the best ground in Latin America. In my mind it’s similar to a lot of the stadiums in Europe – it’s very modern and very comfortable. For the players and the fans, I hope it will be like a party every game.

How popular are United in Mexico?
Manchester United are certainly one of the three or four most popular teams in the world. There are many fans here in Mexico – it’s fair to say United is on a par with Barcelona, Real Madrid and Inter Milan.

And now there’ll be even more Mexicans taking an interest in United…Yes, definitely. When I mentioned Barcelona as one of the most popular clubs outside of Mexico that is largely because of [Mexican players] Rafael Marquez and Giovani dos Santos. But now, with Javier Hernandez playing at Old Trafford, you can bet United will pick up many, many new fans from Mexico.

Can Chicharito be successful in England?
Of course. He’s a very good player and he’s very young so he can still learn a lot. He has a very good character, is very skilful and his speed is always a problem for defenders. I think he has everything he needs to be a success in England.

He’s certainly different to a lot of English strikers…Yes, but I think that’s why Sir Alex Ferguson was interested in him. He wanted something different and he liked what he saw in Chicharito. He’s not too strong and he’s not too tall, but he’s very quick and he’s very clever.

How did the Chivas fans react to the transfer?
Well, at first they were not too happy because he was our best striker. But when they realised we had sold him to United people understood this was a good move for Javier. We didn’t sell him to any old club in Europe – we sold him to one of the best clubs in the world.

What sort of welcome will he get from Chivas fans?
It will be a good welcome. All the Chivas fans are happy to have him back and they’ll get to see him in our wonderful new stadium, playing for both Chivas and United. Everybody is looking forward to seeing him again.

Which Chivas players should United keep an eye on?
Many of our players are young, only 21 or 22, so we’ll see the best from them in a few more years. For now, Michel Vasquez is a tall, strong striker. Another star is Alberto Medina, we rate him very highly. Omar Arellano, quick and strong, is also one to watch.

English football is fast and physical. What about Mexican football?
In Mexico it’s very technical and there’s a lot of emphasis on skill. We also have a lot of homegrown players, which I think is very important. Perhaps in Europe the players tend to be a bit more patient with possession, whereas in Mexico we always like to get the ball forward quickly. That’s particularly true at Chivas – we always try to win.

Only Mexicans can play for Chivas. What are the advantages of this?
It’s a policy that’s been in place for 105 years and it’s worked quite well. We have almost 35million fans and we don’t get any complaints – they like this policy, so we continue it. Mexicans feel very proud of this fact and it's one of the reasons Chivas is the most popular club in this country.

The Mexican season has started already, while United are still in pre-season. Will that make Chivas favourites?
I’m not sure. United have some of the best players in the world and we’ve only just begun our season here – we’ve only played one league game. We have a Copa Libertadores semi-final next Friday so we want to make sure we’re in good shape for that. I’m aware United are only in pre-season but I’m predicting a very good game. Most importantly, I predict a good party!

Menariknya, bintang baru United, Javier "Chicharito" Hernandez lah yang membawa Chivas unggul di babak pertama. Ya, Hernandez memang baru saja meninggalkan Chivas pada bursa transfer awal musim, dan menjadi tamu istimewa pada laga ini.

Bintang internasional Meksiko tampil membela klub lamanya di babak pertama dan mencetak gol ke gawang rekan setimnya, Tomasz Kuszczak ketika laga baru berjalan sembilan menit. Jelas, ini menjadi salam perpisahan manis Hernandez untuk klub yang membesarkan namanya.

Satu menit setelah gol Hernandez, United menyamakan kedudukan melalui rekrutan barunya, Chris Smailing. Mantan punggawa Fulham memaksimalkan sepak pojok United dan menyambar bola dengan tandukan kepala.

Namun, di penghujung babak pertama, Chivas kembali unggul setelah tendangan bebas Adolfo Bautista tidak berhasil dihadang Kuszczak. Chivas pun mengakhiri 45 menit pertama dengan keunggulan 2-1.

Di babak kedua, Hernandez berganti kostum untuk memperkuat Red Devils. Sayang, striker 22 tahun tidak berhasil mengulangi performa apiknya di babak pertama.

Raksasa Premier League sempat tertinggal 1-3 di menit 59 setelah Hector Reynoso menanduk bola ke gawang United. Namun, bintang Portugal Luis Nani berhasil memperkecil ketinggalan di menit 80.

Kendati demikian, pertahanan solid Chivas akhirnya memaksa United menelan kekalahan 2-3.

Wayne Rooney will play for the first time since England crashed out of the World Cup against Germany five weeks ago when Manchester United face an Irish League XI in Dublin on Wednesday.

Sir Alex Ferguson had earmarked the friendly, which opens the city's new Aviva Stadium, as a chance to give his World Cup contingent their first pre-season run-out.

And Ferguson confirmed on Sunday that Rooney will be in the squad alongside Javier Hernandez, Michael Carrick, Nemanja Vidic and Ji-sung Park, while Antonio Valencia is also expected to return after an ankle injury.

'Rooney, Park, Carrick and Vidic are back in training and are doing well,' said the United boss.

'Valencia is also training well and needs a game. All of them will be involved and Chicharito (Hernandez) will be part of the squad.'

United chief executive David Gill has again played down the possibility of Ferguson adding to his squad before the start of the season, even though he does not expect the market to stay quiet.

'Well, there's been one exception obviously,' said Gill, referring to big-spending neighbours Manchester City. 'With the World Cup being on, not a lot went on in June but I think there will be more movement in August as clubs look at their squads.

'I think there will be some trimming because of the squad limits being introduced in the Premier League. 'We're always looking at things and I'm not saying we won't do any business before the transfer window closes but, at the moment, there's nothing imminent at United.'
