Facebook.com/manchesterunited has now registered over three million fans since its launch, making the Reds the most followed English football team on the social networking website (source: sportingintelligence.com).

The community continues to grow, with over 500,000 fans per month choosing to engage with the club on Facebook.

“This underlines our global fanbase,” said a club spokesman. “Any look at the extent of our support reveals we have fans everywhere from Stretford to Singapore to Santiago, showing the strength of United’s appeal.”

Manchester United have fastest growing Facebook team page ever

Manchester United’s official Facebook fan page has become the fastest growing of any sports team in the world, registering almost 2.4m fans within two months of being set up.

The club, relatively slow to embrace Facebook as a platform for interaction with supporters compared to some of their major rivals in England and Europe, opened their Facebook page on 14 July.

At some stage later today (Tuesday 14 September), and almost certainly within 24 hours, United’s Facebook page will overtake Liverpool’s in global popularity, making United the most followed Premier League on the web.

At 9.30am this morning, Liverpool’s page had 2,383,038 fans, compared to United’s 2,377,055, leaving United 6,000 fans behind.

At the time of writing (just after 2pm on 14 September), United have 2,383,745 fans, and Liverpool 2,387,661, leaving United fewer than 4,000 fans behind.

The real time updated totals at any time can be checked at the Facebook pages themselves, with United’s linked here, and Liverpool’s linked here.

Liverpool, pioneers in a lot of new technologies over the decades, including web-based interaction, set up their page in March 2009, reaching 300,000 fans within four months.

United’s Facebook fanbase is still growing at approaching 1m fans per month. “This underlines our global fanbase,” said a spokesman for the club. “Any look at the extent of our support reveals there are United fans everywhere from Stretford to Shanghai, showing the strength of United’s appeal.”

Sportingintelligence has undertaken various pieces of research into Facebook popularity in sports since early August, to mark Facebook reaching 500 million users, equivalent to one in nine of all adults in the world.

We first looked at sports teams’ popularity on Facebook at the start of August. That research is linked here, but please note that this market is dynamic and huge changes can and do occur over short periods. Regularly updated figures on the world’s most popular sports teams on Facebook (and other social networks) can be found here at famecount.com, the social media statistics specialists (tallies updated daily).

10pm update: United overtook Liverpool this evening and are now, and will probably remain, the most popular Premier League team on Facebook.

In truth, Manchester United's balance sheet could have been a lot worse than an overall loss of £83.6 Million. What kept The Red Devils as the World's largest sports organisation in terms of money was our fantastic marketing team - who have even demonstrated their worth on Facebook...
The club posted an overall loss of £83 Million on Friday, despite making over £100 Million operating profit thanks to a turnover of £286 Million last year. United's team of expert sales and marketing people have already secured over £200 Million in sponsorship payments since the summer of 2009.

In the last three months, a war has been ongoing between Manchester United and Liverpool's online presence via the World's largest Social Networking site, Facebook. In the first three months that Liverpool's Facebook page went live (March 2009), they generated 300,000 fans... impressive ? - well not compared to United, who have attracted well over 3 Million fans in the same amount of time.

United's page has now over 400,000 more fans than the Scousers. While Barcelona remain ahead on over 5 Million, and Real Madrid in second on 4 Million, United have yet to pass out the two Spanish giants - who have had a couple of years advantage. But with The Reds catching-up, it is another attribute to United's 350 Million worldwide fans and a great memento to our marketing staff back at Old Trafford.

United's official page on Facebook passed another landmark figure this week when its number of fans broke through the 11million barrier.

Launched only last July, Facebook.com/manchesterunited is the fastest growing page of any sports team on the planet (source: sportingintelligence.com).

The Reds are the most followed English football team on the social networking website, with over 500,000 fans per month choosing to engage with the club on Facebook.

In addition, the United page now has a higher number of active fans than any other page in world football - a distinction identified by FanGager.com, which has compiled a list of the 100 most active fan pages in social media. It defines an active fan as someone who engages with the Facebook page by ‘liking’ posts or making comments. At the last count, FanGager.com had United’s table-topping number of active fans at 256,000 (source: mashable.com).

A spokesman for United said, “The fan growth and engagement with our page demonstrates the passion and depth of support the club enjoys around the world. We’re constantly reviewing the publishing strategy to keep the content fresh and compelling.”

Recent exclusive content on United’s Facebook page included a video of Wes Brown and Wayne Rooney competing against each other across 10 different sporting tasks.
