Barcelona centre-back Gerard Pique has spoken gratefully about the treatment afforded to him during his time at Manchester United by Sir Alex Ferguson, calling his former boss a "second father."

"When I came to Manchester United I was only 17 years old and it was hard for me to leave my family and friends and change clubs," Pique told STV Sports Centre. "And he helped me in every way, not only in football but also to find a home and in all my relationships outside of football. He was a person who helped me a lot. And for me he will always be like a second father."

The Catalan man failed to break into the first-team at Old Trafford, making just nine appearances in the 2007/08 season after his transfer from Real Zaragoza , and moved to Barcelona the next season for a relatively cheap 5 million euros.

But Pique said Ferguson wanted him to stay and regretted his departure.

"I remember when I went to his office to tell him that I wanted to go because Barcelona wanted me. It was my city, the club where I had grown up and I wanted to return. He did not want me to leave, and said I had a future at the club and had high expectations of me," he said. "I wanted to go, but he sent me a letter telling me that for him it was difficult to let me go to Barcelona."

The move didn't work out too badly for Pique, though, who soon cemented his place at the heart of the Barcelona defence, winning eight titles, including the Champions League.

Kepindahan Pique bukan lantaran Ferguson tidak menginginkannya lagi, Fergie bahkan sempat menahannya untuk tetap di Manchester karena yakin Pique memiliki masa depan di Old Trafford.

Panggilan sayang ini 'dituturkan' Shakira lewat akun Twitternya. Dalam akun pribadi jejaring sosial ini, Shakira 'mempersembahkan' kekasih barunya yang tak lain adalah Pique dengan sebuah foto mesra. Dalam foto ini, Shakira terlihat berpose bersama sang kekasih yang tak lain adalah pemain sepakbola asal Spanyol yang sedang memeluknya dari belakang.

Manchester - Usai cuma jadi pemain pelapis di Manchester United, Gerard Pique mampu membuktikan kualitasnya bersama Barcelona. Dia kini telah berhasil meraih segala yang diimpikan seorang pesepakbola.

Gerard Pique was fighting back tears and almost threw in the towel during an unsuccessful spell at Manchester United - but on Saturday he will be reunited with
the club he says helped him to win nine trophies and a World Cup.
United remain an important part of his career, despite playing only a handful of matches for Sir Alex Ferguson, a man to whom he says he owes a debt of thanks.
‘I went to England at 17 and it was tough,’ said Barcelona defender Pique. ‘I had always been used to being in the team every week — and then suddenly I was at home on match days. It was very difficult and there were days when I thought, “This is not worth it”. But I would not have been the same had I not gone to Manchester United.

‘I learned how to live through the bad times on my own. I would call my mother and tell her everything was fine when I was really holding back the tears.’
Saturday will also re-unite Pique with his former manager Ferguson and he said: ‘I will always owe him a massive debt for the way he treated me.’
And his former team-mate Wayne Rooney, with whom Pique has already shared two
Champions League finals, will come in much closer proximity in Saturday’s final at Wembley.
In Moscow in 2008, Pique was in the stands as a United reserve as Rooney helped Ferguson’s side beat Chelsea on penalties.

And although the two came face to face a year later, it was Cristiano Ronaldo playing at centre-forward for United and not Rooney as Pique and Barcelona came out on top.
Pique sat out the Moscow final having already agreed to go back to Spain at the end of the season. ‘It’s incredible how much more you suffer when watching from the stands than on the pitch,’ he said of the final United appeared to have lost until John Terry’s penalty slip.
The Rome final a year later cast Pique as one of the lead actors. ‘To find myself up against the players who, just a year earlier, I had shared a piece of history with [in a

Musim lalu tensi duel El Clasico benar-benar memanas. Bertemu lima kali sepanjang musim lalu, pertemuan Madrid dengan Barcelona di semifinal Liga Champions berakhir dengan panas.

Tudingan curang yang dilontarkan pelatih Madrid Jose Mourinho terhadap Barcelona membuat para pemain klub asal Katalan itu geram. Salah satunya adalah bek Gerard Pique.

Pique merasa Madrid seharusnya mengambil sikap sedikit berbicara dan lebih fokus meningkatkan level permainan. Pique merujuk pada situasi berlebihan di semifinal Liga Champions yang mendapat sorotan dari UEFA.

"Pada akhirnya sepakbola yang menang. Real Madrid harusnya jangan terlalu banyak bicara dan fokus ke soal lain," ujar Pique seperti yang dilansir Goal.

Gerard Pique admits he is flabbergasted at how long Sir Alex Ferguson has remained at the top with Manchester United.

Ferguson will celebrate an incredible 25 years as Old Trafford chief in November.

During that time he has taken a club forever languishing in Liverpool's shadow to the pinnacle of the English game.

Last term, they finally knocked Liverpool 'off their perch' by lifting a record 19th league championship and now Ferguson is aiming to fend off new challengers in a bid to make in 20.

Pique spent four seasons at United, having been snapped up from Barcelona as a 17-year-old and made 20 appearances for the club before returning to Catalonia and beginning an unprecedented period of success, which includes a World Cup triumph and two Champions League final wins against his old club.

But Pique has nothing but admiration for Ferguson.

And as they prepare to square up in Washington for the final match of United's five-game pre-season tour, Pique spoke of his high regard for the man he used to call boss.

"I have never seen anything like this in Spain," he said. "It is unbelievable.

"I was with him for a few years and know why he is there.

"He is a great coach but he also treats the players really well. It is not only in terms of football. No matter what it is, he will be there for you.

"He has won so many titles and so many important things.

"All the Manchester United fans are really happy that he has stayed because they never won as much as they do now.

"Most of the is because of him and I hope he stays for many years yet."

Barcelona defender Gerard Pique has accused Real Madrid coach Jose Mourinho of "wrecking Spanish football" following the European champions' stormy Spanish Super Cup win on Wednesday.

Lionel Messi scored a late volley to seal a 5-4 aggregate victory over Real in a pulsating encounter that saw red cards shown to three players after tempers boiled over at the end resulting in a mass brawl.

"Mourinho is wrecking Spanish football," Pique told reporters. "People are looking for culprits but they are in Madrid. Someone needs to get the video, analyze it and say who is to blame."

A bad-tempered run of five 'clasicos' last season has seen the heated rivalry between the clubs grew ever more acrimonious.

Mourinho, who was punished by UEFA following his actions after the Champions League semi-final against Barca, accused Barcelona of play-acting to influence referees while their arch-rivals countered that Real were overly aggressive.

"We hope that on Thursday everyone will be talking about a great game of football and not the melee," added Pique, a World Cup winner with Spain.

"It isn't the first time this has happened ... it is always the same people. Someone needs to sort this out."

Real defender Marcelo's lunging tackle on substitute Cesc Fabregas in the final minute of the game had players and both benches jostling and arguing.

Marcelo and Real team mate Mesut Ozil were sent off, as was Barca's David Villa.

HIDING THE BALLS?

In the post-match news conference, Mourinho accused Barca players of going to ground easily.

"Marcelo got a red card because we all know what happens after tackles in certain areas of the pitch," the Portuguese said.

"It was a spectacular game from the first to last minute. But from the first minute of the second half, and I don't criticise it because I know people do it, the ballboys hid the balls. (Barca were winning 2-1 at this point).

"It happens with small teams when they find themselves in difficulties."

During the melee of players and management staff, television pictures appeared to show Mourinho sneak up behind Barcelona assistant coach Tito Vilanova and poke him in the eye.

When asked about the incident, Mourinho replied: "I have been polite and played like a man and not fallen to the ground at the first touch. I don't know who Vilanova is."

Barca coach Pep Guardiola told reporters: "The images will speak for themselves. This is going to end up badly if it isn't stopped soon."
