I am so proud the fans sing my name But i Fear tommorow the will stop. I fear it because I love it. And everything you love, you fear you will lose”

aksi nya dilapangan sensasional.. goal - goal nya pun luar biasa

Hail The KING... The KING CANTONA..

Salah satu titik awal gue suka United adalah gol Cantona ke gawang Liverpool waktu final FA Cup 1996 (apa 1997 yah?) kalo ga salah, sayangnya gue ga lama menyaksikan kehebatannya karena ga berapa lama dia malah pensiun huhuhu

Jadi gue cuma liat aksi Cantona sebagian besar lewat vcd/dvd atau siaran ulangan doang hehehe

CANTONA ON CANTONA

THE KING’S THOUGHT

Tahun 1996, setahun sebelum pensiun, Cantona menerbitkan buku berjudul Cantona On Cantona.

So, mereka mencari kesenangan dalam kesedihan.

Tiap orang punya momen-momen buruk.

Brian Kidd pun sama pentingnya.

Keanekaragaman budaya membuat kita kian pintar.

Kita hanya perlu melihat musik kontemporer.

Malah saya tak keberatan berinkarnasi bukan menjadi manusia. Bila diberi sebuah pilihan, saya mau berinkarnasi menjadi seekor elang. Saya suka cara elang bergerak; cara mereka meluncur di udara, cara mereka menatap sekitarnya.

Eric Cantona: I can't understand why Ronaldo left Manchester United for Real Madrid
Last modified 23:08 15/08/09 By Simon Mullock

Eric Cantona has told Cristiano Ronaldo that he left the biggest club in the world when he quit Manchester United to join Real Madrid.

French legend Cantona, now earning a living as an actor 12 years after he shocked United by announcing his retirement, says he could not comprehend Ronaldo’s desire to make an £80million move to the Bernabeu.

The Portuguese international has insisted that Madrid represented a step up from United.

But Cantona believes money now rules the game he loves.

And the man who walked away from United because he felt he was being exploited is typically critical of the billionaire investors who are buying clubs and pricing traditional fans out of the game with exorbitant ticket prices.

“I can’t understand why he [Ronaldo] would want to leave United,” said Cantona.

“For me the biggest club in the world is United. When you are at United, if you don’t have a problem with the club, if they give you the contract and if they really want you to play, then you can’t have any problems. I don’t understand why he’d want to leave.

“All the owners of clubs now are businessmen.

“I’m not sure if football was like this 20 years ago. I’m not sure these people would buy United or Chelsea or Liverpool then.

“When we see these kind of businessmen as owners of the clubs I’m not surprised that they don’t care about working-class fans.”

Cantona also revealed his favourite United goal. He said: “The one I prefer was in the [1996] Cup Final against Liverpool.

“Because it was a new generation of players. It’s not the best goal but it’s the best for all of us. It was the beginning for a great generation.”

@ fredrian.seven : Percayalah, permainan Cantona bagus banget ! He's the best !

di transfer window kemaren, Man Utd kehilangan target utama mereka, Karim Benzema.

PERLUKAH ERIC CANTONA MASUK KE MAN UTD LAGI?

hummm pemikiran bgs jg seh..

And as for Eric.. doi terang2an bilang, the next time he returns to United, it will be to be the manager...

So, kayanya impiannya rada susah deh, untuk buat King Eric jadi Duta Besar...

Instead of Eric why not choose Schmeichel?

"I will not return in the near future," he told MUTV. "If I come back I will need to be involved in football for two or three years because things change.

"I do not want to be a manager like everybody else, playing the same system. I want to create something."

Cantona says that he would like to follow in the footsteps of Johan Cruyff, who was an innovative coach when he led Barcelona to European Cup glory in 1992.

"I remember the 1970s with Ajax and after that Cruyff as a manager at Barcelona," Cantona added. "It was a new system.

Dikutip dr Biography beliau...‘Cantona: The Rebel Who Would Be King

Truth Behind THAT Night At Selhurst – Ferguson Almost Got Rid Of Eric
source: republikofmancunia

The biography documents Cantona’s life from his time in France to his departure from Manchester United, describing the glory, the mistakes, the combat and the inspiration.

Here is just a small out take which describes the events of that night at Selhurst Park, when Cantona kicked a thug in the crowd and almost put an end to his United career:

Palace had set out to disturb United’s usual rhythm, and largely succeeded. Defender RIchard Shaw (who was voted Palace’s ‘player of the year’ at the end of the season) had been given the task of shadowing Eric Cantona, and was acquitting himself well, much to Eric’s annoyance, as the game’s referee, Alan Wilkie, seemed to turn a blind eye to the crafty knocks Shaw was landing on his shins on and off the ball. “No yellow cards then?” he enquired of the official as they walked to the dressing-room at half-time. In the tunnel, just as the game was about to start, Wilkie was asked the question again by a seemingly calm Cantona, and then, in typically more robust language, by an irate Alex Fergusion: “why don’t you do your ****ing job?” The referee ignored them.

In the 61st minute of the game, Shaw took advantage of Wilkie turning his back to kick Eric again. The foul had gone unnoticed by the official, but Cantona’s retaliation – a kick of his own – hadn’t escaped the assistant Eddie Walsh’s attention. Another red card was the anavoidable consequence of his flash of temper, of which there had been so many already in the previous months: it was the fifth time Eric had been dismissed in his three years in England, an astonishingly high figure for an attacking player, especially if one bears in mind that none of these dismissals occurred while he played for Leeds, and that he also collected sixteen cautions during the same period.

The long walk back to the dressing-room was a familiar one to him. He hardly remonstrated. He walked away, turned round after a few steps, looked Wilkie straight in the eye and pulled his collar down, the surest means to indicate he knew he his game was over, and that he did not question the validity of the decision. Steve Lindsell [sports photographer] trained his camera on the player, who was departing from the pitch at an even pace, and now going past the dugout where Alex Ferguson stood, looking the other way.

“I was positioned on the opposite side of the ground,” Lindsell told me, “just following Cantona after his dismissal. Then, all of a sudden, he jumped over the fence and kicked that guy! I snapped, and snapped again. I thought I had a good picture, but couldn’t imagine the impact it would have. I went to my van outside Selhurst Park, printed the roll, which must have taken me 15 to 20 minutes, then sent the pictures. The first paper to receive them was the Daily Mirror. But it was only the day afterwards that all hell broke lose.”

Images of the incident itself have been played and replayed so often that it seems almost pointless to describe it again in detail. A snarling young man rushed down eleven rows to stand to shout abuse at Cantona. He later, and quite ludicrously, claimed (in the Sun, who paid him for his account of the confrontation) to have said something along the lines of “Off you go, Cantona – it’s an early bath for you!” According to the numerous eyewitnesses who enjoyed the tabloid fame after the explosion, the words that came out of his distorted face were closer to: “**** off, you mother****ing French bastard!” according to Luke Beckley, who was eight at the time.

With his cropped hair, pasty skin and tight-fitting black jacket, Matthew Simmons could have come straight from central casting, the archetypal white thug. But Cantona’s victim was no actor. The Mirror soon revealed that ‘Simmons, twenty, of Kynaston Avenue, Thornton Heath, South London, has a conviction for assault with intent to rob. In 1992, he’d been fined £100 and placed on two years’ probation after striking a petrol station cashier.’ The cashier in question was a young Sri Lankan who had escaped serious head injuries when the three-foot spanner wielded by Simmons slipped and struck him on the shoulder instead. Quite amusingly, his aggressor was also a qualified referee and, less amusingly, a BNP and National Front sympathiser.

According to Page [Jim, Palace steward] and Davies [Norman, United's kitman, who was known as 'Vaseline' to United players after his first attempt of getting hold of Cantona failed] Cantona was “bloody angry”. So much so that the latter had to position himself at the door of the dressing-room to avoid another, even more dramatic fracas. “He was furious. He wanted to go out again… I locked the door and told him: ‘If you want to go back on the pitch, you’ll have to go over my body, and break the door down’”. Once Cantona had recovered some of his composure, Davies brewed some tea for him. Cantona sipped his cup and headed for the showers without another word being exchanged between the two men.

By the time the game ended in a 1-1 draw, according to Ryan Giggs’ recollection, “Eric wasn’t agitated”, either in the dressing-room or on the plane that took the team back to Manchester late that night. “Nothing was said because none of us, the gaffer included, realised the seriousness of what had gone on. Word hadn’t got through and Eric was giving nothing away.”

As he confided to Erik Bielderman many years later, Alex Ferguson failed to realise the seriousness of the situation because he had no clear idea of what had happened after the actual sending off. “I wasn’t looking at him when he left the pitch. I was focussing on how to reorganise the team tactically, ten against eleven. Once back at home, my son Jason asked me: ‘Do you want to see the pictures? I’ve recorded the game.’ I refused and went to bed. Sleep wouldn’t come. I got up around 3-4 in the morning and I saw. The shock was huge…”

As he wrote in his diary, ‘My initial feeling was for letting Eric go. I felt that this time the good name of Manchester United demanded strong action. The club is bigger than any individual.’ But Ferguson realised how much Cantona had contributed to making it ‘big’ again. ‘I then thought about a call a friend had given me on our way back from London. We were thinking about what we could do about the media hullabaloo and the punishment that would follow. He told me: “You remember our chat about John McEnroe? I explained to you that Eric and him are the same. John exploded on court, insulted referees, swore against himself. But, off the court, he can be charming. Eric is the same. This guy is fantastic. Don’t give up, Alex!”‘ This friend was a lifelong supporter of United, Sir Richard Greenbury, who held the positions of chief executive and chairman of Marks and Spencer plc from 1988 until 1999. Ferguson reassured the businessman. He wouldn’t let Cantona down.

“The next day,” he went on to tell L’Equipe Magazine, “at breakfast, I told everybody: ‘We’re backing Eric. He’s our player. The FA mustn’t have his skin. He made a mistake. We all make mistakes.’ Eric knew I was on his side. He knew he could count on me. He needed someone to help him, someone whom he could trust, who’d support him. I fulfilled this mission.”

And how. As Roy Keane later told Eamon Dunphy: “I don’t think any other football man would have demonstrated the skill, resolve and strength that Ferguson did managing the Cantona affair.”

What Ferguson didn’t say is that, shortly after the final whistle, referee Wilkie saw an apoplectic Manchester United manager storm in to his dressing-room. “It’s all your ****ing fault! If you’d done your ****ing job this wouldn’t have happened!” According to Ferguson’s biographer, Michal Crick, a policeman had to intervene to stop the stream of abuse and drag the incensed Scot out of the referee’s quarters.

Man Utd legend Cantona: I would have clobbered Henry!
-tribalfootball.com-

Manchester United legend Eric Cantona would have clobbered Thierry Henry if he had been on the Republic of Ireland side on Wednesday night.

The former France and Manchester United star told The Sun: "What shocks me the most quite frankly, is not the hand-ball.

"What shocks me the most is that this player, at the end of the game, in front of the TV cameras, went to sit down next to an Ireland player to comfort him - when he had just screwed him."

Cantona could not believe Henry chose to sit and chat with Republic of Ireland defender Richard Dunne after his handball set up William Gallas for the goal which ended Ireland's World Cup dream in Paris.

Cantona, infamous for his kung-fu kick at a fan, added: "If I had been an Irishman, he wouldn't have lasted three seconds."

Cantona: Domenech’s the worst coach since Louis XVI

“I think that Raymond Domenech is the worst coach in French football since Louis XVI. If it was up to me, I’d put (Bordeaux coach) Laurent Blanc in charge of the France team,” the former Manchester United hero continued.

“He continues the season with Bordeaux, he wins the league with Bordeaux and he wins the World Cup! I’m not the only one who thinks that… What shocked me most wasn’t the handball, honestly,” said Cantona.

“What shocked me most was that at the end of the match, in front of the television cameras, this player (Henry) went and sat down next to an Irish player to console him, even though he’d screwed them three minutes earlier.

“If I’d been Irish, he wouldn’t have lasted three seconds.”

Thierry Henry should have been punched by cheated Irish, suggests shocked Manchester United legend Eric Cantona
-dailymail.co.uk-

Manchester United hero Eric Cantona has sensationally suggested he would have punched Thierry Henry if he was Irish, after the striker's infamous handball set up France's winning goal in their 2-1 aggregate play-off win over the Republic of Ireland.

The Old Trafford idol lambasted the ex-Arsenal ace over his attitude following the controversial World Cup victory in Paris.

'What shocked me most wasn't the handball, honestly,' said Cantona.

Shock therapy: Handball cheat Thierry Henry attempts to console Richard Dunne but Eric Cantona says if he was Irish, the striker wouldn't have last three seconds

'What shocked me most was that at the end of the match, in front of the television cameras, this player (Henry) went and sat down next to an Irish player (Aston Villa's Richard Dunne) to console him, even though he'd screwed them three minutes earlier.

'If I'd been Irish, he wouldn't have lasted three seconds.'

The former French international slammed national coach Raymond Domenech on Friday following France's controversial qualification for the 2010 finals in South Africa.

'I think that Raymond Domenech is the worst coach in French football since Louis XVI,' added Cantona, referring to the French king who was executed by revolutionaries in 1793 and is commonly depicted as an indecisive, dithering monarch.

Cantona: Pukuli Henry sampai Pingsan

http://www.kompas.com/data/photo/2009/11/21/0932004p.jpg

(SUN)

Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson will honour his former player Eric Cantona with the prestigious Legend of Football Award at the annual Football Extravaganza, which this year will be held at the Hilton Park Lane, on Monday 12th April 2010.

Signed from Leeds United in December 1992 for just £1.2 million, Cantona was voted Manchester United’s player of the century and is still revered at Old Trafford where fans still sing his name. He was voted PFA Player of the year in 1994 and the FWA Footballer of the Year in 1996.

Previous recipients of the Legend of Football Award at the annual Football Extravaganza include Sir Stanley Matthews, Sir Bobby Robson, Sir Bobby Charlton and indeed Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson. Suksesnya Debut Teater Cantona
Okdwitya Karina Sari - detiksport

http://www.detiksport.com/images/content/2010/01/27/424/Cantona-isi.jpg

PICTURE SPECIAL: Eric Cantona picks up 'Legend of Football' award from Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson

Sir Alex Ferguson, meeting up with a high-profile French footballer in a swanky London hotel. Surely Manchester United’s big summer signing has been revealed?

Unfortunately, it’s nothing as dramatic as that, but you would forgive Fergie a moment to reminisce about a player he could do with so badly right now.

The United boss was in London to award Old Trafford hero Eric Cantona with the Legend of Football Award at the annual Football Extravaganza, which took place on Monday night at the Hilton Park Lane.

King Eric: Sir Alex Ferguson hands former Manchester United hero Cantona his award in London on Monday night

Cantona spent five years under Sir Alex, helping inspire the club to four Premier League titles and two FA Cups. He was also voted Players’ Player and Writers’ Player of the Year during time with the Reds.

Previous recipients of the prestigious award include Sir Stanley Matthews, Sir Bobby Robson, Sir Bobby Charlton and the United boss himself.

Fergie attended the event in aid of Nordoff Robbins, just 24 hours after conceding that the club’s title ambitions were slipping away.

Holding back the years: United legends past and present - and Mick Hucknall - in attendance to honour Eric Cantona

United’s hopes of winning a record 19th league title were looking increasingly unlikely after a scoreless draw at Blackburn which leaves rivals Chelsea with a lead of one point and a game in hand.

The United boss said: 'I think it has slipped away from us today. It is going to be very difficult to win this league. We have only a lifeline if Chelsea blow it.'

"Of all the players that could have come in, I mean what's the point in challenging for your place! He's got his collar up, he's cool and he was one of the best players in the world."

Dion Dublin on Eric the King
SkySport

http://images.icnetwork.co.uk/upl/birmmail/apr2009/3/8/dion-dublin-910397425.jpg

Dion Dublin told Soccer AM he was grateful for his time at Man Utd, despite being overshadowed by a certain Eric Cantona!

The former United, Coventry City and Aston Villa striker was happy to reminisce about his playing days after hanging up his boots at the end of last season.

After beginning his career with Norwich City Dublin quickly moved onto Cambridge United where he spent four seasons and scored 52 goals in 156 games.

His personal success on the pitch was mirrored by the clubs as John Beck took Cambridge from division four into division two in the space of just two seasons between 1990 and 1992, while also guiding them into the quarter-finals of the FA Cup twice in same period.

United's success and Dublin's performances caught the eye of several top managers and in 1992 he moved to Manchester United after Beck sent a montage of Dublin's goals to Sir Alex Ferguson.

"I don't think Alex Ferguson had ever seen me play live, but I think he just had a look at (the montage) and liked what he saw," he said.

"I got a phone call from John Beck that said 'Dion Man Utd want to buy you' and it just didn't register for a good week!"

However, shortly after arriving at Old Trafford Dublin suffered a broken leg - forcing him to miss the majority of his first season in the top flight.

A certain Frenchman by the name of Eric Cantona later came in to replace him and Dublin revealed that he may as well have just given up on his chances to get back in the team there and then!

"There was just no way back, no way back! He changed Man Utd as a football club as well, it was incredible," he told Soccer AM.

"Of all the players that could have come in, I mean what's the point in challenging for your place! He's got his collar up, he's cool and he was one of the best players in the world."

Despite this blow Dublin, who later went on to forge a successful career with Aston Villa and Coventry City as well as represent England, admitted that he didn't regret his time with the Red Devils.

"In some ways it was a bit of a kick in the teeth," he said. "But in other ways I got to train with him and meet him so I got to learn off him."

"The players I played with at United were incredible. Bryan Robson for instance was probably the best midfield player that's ever lived in an England shirt."

Since bringing the curtain down on his career Dublin has joined the Sky Sports team as an expert pundit on the Premier League.

His last piece of action as a professional footballer took place at Hillsborough during Norwich City's match with Sheffield Wednesday and he revealed it was an emotional affair.

"I didn't expect it, but the Norwich fans were going to give me a good ovation," he said. "But 42,000 people stood up, the referee stopped the game, the press box stood up, the director's box stood up and it was just incredible.

"I'm just waiting for the DVD now to put in my collection!"

[Q&A] Eric Cantona

http://cdn.fourfourtwo.com/contentimages/interviews/cantonaimg.jpg

What stands out most from your time growing up in Marseille? Were you a happy child or were you always frowning then too?
I was a happy child. We had a strong, close family, which gives you the best education you can get. We were working class and satisfied with the small things in life. We were polite and always said please and thank you. We were respectful to others and enjoyed life. We sang, smiled and loved. We were immigrants, Mediterranean people. My father came from Italy, my mother from Barcelona.

I was there when I was a child to see my grandfather. I was 10 and liked it very much. He came to France after the Spanish Civil War. He was not allowed to return for 15 years under the Franco regime. When I finished in Manchester I went to live in Barcelona for three years, to relive those childhood memories. To read and live. I liked Barcelona. [FFT: Have you read Homage to Catalonia by George Orwell?] No, but I would like to. Can you send it to me? Now, I am in Marseille, a football city where OM [Olympique Marseille, another of Cantona’s former teams] is like a religion. It’s a cosmopolitan, passionate city and the people live for football.

Who was crazier: you or Guy Roux? And what’s your favourite memory of your old manager?
I left my family in Marseille to go to Auxerre, which was 600 kilometres away. I was just 15. For us young players, Guy Roux was like a father. I liked him and respected him. In some clubs it is not so close, some coaches are not so close to their players, but Guy Roux made sure that Auxerre was like a big family. If I had moved to another club it may have been difficult. But at Auxerre I found my family.

What motivated you as a player? Money? Success? Glory?
Success and glory: what’s the difference? [Long pause] I think I retired so young because I wanted to improve every time, to be a better player. For myself and the team. To win trophies. To have a feeling of improving. When I retired, I felt that I couldn’t improve any more. And I lost the passion at the same time. The passion comes with the motivation of improving. If you lose the passion, you lose the motivation.

Money? No. If someone asked you to pay £100 to play in an FA Cup final would you pay or not? So it was a dream for me to play because I did not have to pay. We were paid, but I would have played for nothing. There is lots of money involved in football and the players take their share, which is normal. But it is not money that motivates, it is a dream. The atmosphere is special for the players because we can feel that the fans make the sacrifices to be in the stadium. We can feel that football is in the blood of the fans.

In 1993, against Bulgaria, David Ginola’s misplaced pass to you gave the ball away and Kostadinov’s goal stopped France qualifying for USA 94. How far do you think you would have progressed at the World Cup had you made it?
It’s a very bad memory because we did not lose a game until we had three to go. First, we played in Sweden; if we’d won, we would have qualified, but we drew after leading 1-0 – they equalised 10 minutes from the end. So we had two more games, against Israel and Bulgaria. We beat Israel 4-0 away, but lost 3-2 to Bulgaria at home. If we had drawn, we would have gone through. We were 1-0 up and I scored the goal. They scored the winning goal in the last seconds.

Bulgaria and Sweden qualified, and both of them reached the semi-finals of the World Cup. France could have done at least as well as they did. We had the best team, but we didn’t really handle the situation well, despite our players having a lot of experience – because even with experience, you can make a mistake. But you have to learn from mistakes to improve, both in football and in your life.

Do you prefer a nice glass of French wine or a cold British pint? What about snails or roast beef?
Snail? Ah, escargot. I like to taste local things, to test them. When I go to Spain I take a Spanish beer or wine. When I go to Brazil I take a Brazilian beer or wine. When I was in England I took an English beer. But with the French, wine. Here in the south of France I take a rosé, especially in the summer. It’s cold [smiles].

What was your reaction to Trevor Francis offering you only a trial at Sheffield Wednesday?
He didn’t invite me for a trial. I was there for a week and I thought I was there to sign. My lawyer was there and he spoke to try and find a way with the contract. I trained and played in a friendly game. We won 4-3. I scored three goals. After one week, he asked me to spend one more week on trial. There weren’t a lot of foreigners in England then, maybe some from the north of Europe but not many from the south. Maybe they were suspicious, but I was a France international and Sheffield Wednesday wanted more time to decide about me. That was not a very good way to go about things.

We’ve heard the rumours but it’s never really been answered properly – why did you leave Leeds? Did you fall out with any players or just Wilkinson? Were you looking for a move before the fabled phone call between Fergie and Wilko?
I had a bad relationship with the manager, Wilkinson. We didn’t have the same views on football. I am more like a Manchester footballer. At Leeds, football was played the old way – I think you say kick and then rush. But it was very important to play for Leeds at first because I learned a lot with this kind of football. And we had success. But if I don’t feel the environment is good, I don’t want to be there. I need to feel good.

Maybe that’s why I had problems before. Maybe the atmosphere at a club wasn’t how I dreamed it would be. I needed time or I gave up or I tried to find words to explain what I wanted. It’s like with a woman. Sometimes you can’t find love. Sometimes you can, but it’s still not right. It’s good to be in love, but you want more, you want to give, you want to receive. Sometimes that doesn’t happen. I’m not sure that I would like to be with a woman who is like some of the chairmen I met. They didn’t deserve to be loved.

Six months before you joined Manchester United, you played in a 0-0 draw at Old Trafford. You nearly scored with an overhead kick. The whole of the K Stand applauded you – unheard of for a Leeds player. Did that seem weird?
You dream about these things so if they happen you feel you lived them before.

Who would have won a verbal joust: Camus or Sartre? And on the pitch?
[Looks totally perplexed] What!? [FFT: The philosophers.] Ah, Camus! Or Sartre! [Laughs] I didn’t understand. I thought you meant a camel or a sauterelle [grasshopper]. You know, the little thing which moves a little bit then jumps [makes his hands like a grasshopper as he laughs out loud]. I liked this comparison... But the philosophers? There would be no winner with these kind of people.

They were open people with their own ideas, but they would listen to the ideas of others. Truth was not everything. You argue to improve or change your point of view. If you think you know the truth about everything then you become very closed. You stay in your own world and go crazy. And then after 10 years you kill yourself. It is important to be open and to have your own point of view, but be open to change.

How much Mancunian culture did you absorb? Did you watch Corrie and listen to The Smiths, Stone Roses or Oasis? Do you miss Manchester?
I didn’t watch this kind of programme, but I liked Oasis. And the others... The Stone Roses. I liked The Smiths before I moved to Manchester. Morrissey, I liked the things he did and the way he did them. Very much. A lot of people in France liked him. I do miss Manchester, a lot. Manchester United is so strong and you can feel that in the city. There’s a lot of energy in Manchester in football, music and culture. Maybe it’s because of the rain. I only lived there when I was a player.

I went back to live there recently for a month [to shoot Finding Eric, a Ken Loach film about a Mancunian postman]. Some cities you have beautiful things to see and visit; in Manchester they have energy. I could feel something, the energy from the history of the city. People try to find things in Manchester, to create things. My friend Claude Boli lived in Manchester at the same time as me. His girlfriend moved there to study the textiles of Africa, the fabrics and the cloth. That was her passion. I thought that they were all the same, but the different tribes have different cloth, different textiles. All of the cloth travelled from Manchester to Liverpool and then by a boat from Liverpool.

When did you come up with the idea of turning your collar up? Were you copying somebody else?
It wasn’t an idea. I put my shirt on. It was a cold day. The collar stayed up so I kept it like that. We won, so it became a habit to play with my collar up.

What was going through your mind when you kung-fu kicked that Palace fan? If you’d landed on your feet instead of your backside, what would you have done next?
[Long pause] I did land on my feet, not where you say. That’s why I went to punch him again. But I didn’t punch him strong enough. I should have punched him harder.

What did you feel the first time you saw TV footage of you jumping in the crowd at Selhurst Park?
I didn’t watch it. Because I knew. All I had was journalists around my house. That’s all I could see. My house was small. They blocked the light. But I played that moment, at Selhurst Park. It was a drama and I was an actor. I do things seriously without taking myself seriously. I think Nike found that side of my character and used it very well. Even when I kicked the fan, it’s because I don’t take myself seriously.

I didn’t think that I had a responsibility not to do it because of who I was. No, I was just a footballer and a man. I don’t care about being some sort of superior person. I just wanted to do whatever I wanted to do. If I want to kick a fan, I do it. I’m not a role model. I’m not a superior teacher, telling you how to behave. I think the more you see, the more you realise that life is a circus.

Did you see the billboard outside Old Trafford when you came back from the ban, saying: ‘We’ll never forget that night at Selhurst… when you buried that 30-yard screamer’?
Of course I remember it. And I remember the goal – it was against Wimbledon, they played at Selhurst Park too. I liked the words on the poster. And I liked it when I was in court and the fans supported me. They travelled from Manchester, in the middle of the week, to Croydon. I could feel that support and it helped me a lot. The club, also, supported me. So I stayed.

Some say you didn’t perform as well or score goals in big European games. Why do you think that was? Was it just that the Premier League was easier?
I scored goals in the European Cup. Like I scored goals for France: I played 45 times for France and scored 20 goals. I scored one goal in every two games in Europe. That’s not bad. [Smiles] When you are a striker you can prove yourself with numbers. You can play 10 games, score five goals and assist five goals. You can give an answer very quickly if the press are against you by scoring goals. When you’re a midfielder or defender you can’t do that. If they don’t want to see that you’re a good player, they won’t see it. That’s why I was a striker.

Roy Keane has described you as the best finisher he’s seen in one-on-one situations. Why were you so successful in those situations?
I worked a lot and I was relaxed. You have to find the timing when the goalkeeper comes towards you. If he’s too close, you don’t have the angle to score a goal. If he’s too far, then you are too far and you won’t be strong enough to be precise. When the goalkeeper is three metres away is good. That’s when you score the goal. When I was young I used to miss. I tried to understand why I scored in training but not in the game. It was about timing. It’s the same for the dribble. If a defender is too close you can’t dribble; if he is too far away then he can anticipate.

If you’d had an offer to play one more season at any club in the world after you left Manchester United, where would you have chosen?
I didn’t want to play anymore. I had lost the passion.

How do you feel when you see what’s happened to Leeds United? What’s gone wrong there?
When O’Leary was there he did a very good job for three or four years – they played in the European Cup semi-final with a very good generation of young players. I couldn’t understand why they sacked him. Since then, the crowd has gone down and down and down. Leeds is a big club. The crowd have the energy for it to be a big club again. But they saw everything destroyed. Leeds will come back.

Since the Glazers took over, United have won two League titles and a European Cup. Would you still agree with those who say the Glazers will do more harm than good?
I can understand why the supporters are concerned. The philosophy of the club will never change while Alex Ferguson is at the club. After he leaves... that’s what makes me worry. Ferguson is so strong, so popular. He can control everything. For the moment nothing has changed there – apart from in an economic way, and Ferguson does not control the price of the tickets for the fans.

I’m worried about the future. I hope that things will not change. I met the people from FC United when I was in Manchester. They have a great idea. I hope they will become a great club and win the European Cup in 50 years’ time. Every club has to be created at one point. Now, I am interested in the people who create clubs. Which type of people created Manchester United or Manchester City? I’m sure it’s about class.

Has acting replaced the buzz you felt while playing football? Will you ever get involved with the game again?
For me, football and acting are very similar because they are passionate. You get a similar feeling when you are on the pitch and on a set. But the feeling is stronger on a pitch. When I lost that feeling, I stopped playing. I felt like I could not improve. In acting, I work hard to try and improve. I don’t like it when a football coach tells you which way to play. I like to improve myself as a person. Often there are players who have only football as a way of expressing themselves and never develop other interests. And when they no longer play football, they no longer do anything; they no longer exist, or rather they have the sensation of no longer existing.

Did you have as short a temper off the pitch as you did on it?
There’s a fine line between freedom and chaos. To some extent I am an anarchist in that I try for a kind of anarchy. But this is an anarchy of thought, you could say, a liberation of the mind from conventional ways of being and of doing.

Where were you when United won the Champions League in 1999? Was there a tinge of regret that you weren’t out there?
When you see teams win things you want to be involved. But I had been away from football for two years. I was proud and happy. I knew 10 of the players, and Ferguson. I was very happy for him. I would have loved to have been on the pitch in Barcelona, of course.

[B]Who was the greatest French footballer ever – Michel Platini or Zinedine Zidane? Or someone else?
Somebody else. Me. (Like This )

Who’s better as your No.7 successor: Beckham or Ronaldo?
They are different players, but the influence they have on the game is the same. Beckham can help a team win a game. Ronaldo does the same. He scores more goals than Beckham, but their influence is the same.

George Best once said: “I would give all the champagne I’ve ever drunk to be playing alongside him [Cantona] in a big European match at Old Trafford.” What would you have given to play alongside George Best?
Football is art and Best was an artist. Not every picture is a good one; all art is about trying to explain yourself. Everyone can do that, the man behind the bar, the man sweeping the streets. It is up to those watching to decide if you are successful at your art. But it is all art. You are an artist if you explain yourself with beauty, with particularity.

It is about giving something for people to think about, not to provide answers. It is why I don’t want to say what I would give up. Me, I like artists who make me think. I don’t want to be told what to think. I like to have my own interpretation. If you say to me “Look, this piano is black”, then for me the conversation is over.

Cantona Bakal Jadi Alien Jahat di Serial 'Doctor Who'

Marco Tampubolon

VIVAnews - Sudah 13 tahun Eric Cantona meninggalkan Manchester United.

Selama membela MU, Cantona kerap merepotkan Manchester City.

Arsenal, mungkin," tandasnya.

Cantona: Batasi Pemain Asing

"Ya, pembatasan itu penting," ujar Cantona seperti dikutip The Telegraph.

Sarah Crompton: Premier League is desperately lacking an icon to rival Eric Cantona
Most girls get a piece of jewellery as their first gift from a serious boyfriend. I knew my husband was the man for me when he turned up with a billboard-sized advertising poster.

http://i.telegraph.co.uk/telegraph/multimedia/archive/01694/eric_cantona2_1694320c.jpg

On it were blazoned the words: “66 was a great year for English football. Eric was born” over the top of the photograph of Eric Cantona, gaze imperious, collar magisterially turned up.

At something like 8ft by 15ft, it dominated one wall of our tiny flat; whenever I was feeling doubtful or depressed, that confident stare made me feel a bit better. When he was banned from the pitch for eight months for his infamous kung-fu kick, I thought about taking it down. But that felt like a betrayal: it stayed on the wall until we moved, a tribute both to my husband’s love for me – and mine for Cantona.

I know that as a Manchester United fan I am biased, but I don’t think anyone has ever been quite as cool. Love him or loathe him, there’s something about the man. Most people play football because they can and because it makes them rich and famous; Cantona always had a hinterland which suggested that he played football because he wanted to, because he was full of a desire to make it an art, to create something beautiful.

His pronouncements, whether on scoring or on seagulls, were not necessarily as profound as they attempted to appear. But at least they gave the impression that he was actually thinking of something more than the latest fast car or pretty girl. He had a presence and a personality that was instantly identifiable, completely sui generis.

I can’t think of a single player in the current Premier League who comes anywhere near to that description. Sky Sports have obviously reached a similar conclusion. When they wanted to build a billboard campaign there was only one face “big” enough to turn to, only one man who could announce “In uncertainty lies the drama of life” and not provoke derisive jeers.

To some extent they took a gamble: the Frenchman remains a divisive figure. When Ken Loach released Looking for Eric in 2009, everyone anticipated that it would become one of the biggest commercial successes of his career. Its story of a depressed postman called Eric who turns his life around with the help of imaginary visits from his footballing hero – played by Cantona himself – was full of charm and humour.

It screened at the Cannes Film Festival to affectionate cheers, was backed by a huge publicity campaign and received almost entirely favourable reviews. It was indeed Loach’s second most commercially successful film but its cinematic gross of around £1.5 million was still only a third of the amount taken by Loach’s hard-hitting IRA drama The Wind that Shakes the Barley three years before.

Some industry figures wondered if that was partly down to the Cantona effect. No one could fault his performance or the joy he brought to the movie and its admirers, but football supporters are a tribal lot and a film starring a man so closely identified with Manchester United wasn’t going to attract too many Chelsea fans.

Yet the persona he presents to the world is beginning to change. In Looking for Eric, he gently sent himself up, rambling on about prickles and thistles and goodness knows what else. In the Sky advertisements, there is a self-deprecating smile sitting above the puffed-out chest.

Cantona knows he has become a paradigm of the philosopher sportsman, the poet actor. He can even, in the television advertisements, make a joke about “seagulls!” referring to his own gnomic utterance at the end of his ban while looking at a gull snatching a golf ball. He is having fun with his public image.

Last year I broke my own rule – never meet your heroes – and went along to the Looking for Eric junket to conduct a filmed interview for Telegraph online. Once I got over my excitement at actually being in the same room as the man who once filled my wall, I was relieved to discover he really was smart, courteous and funny. But he did seem a little smaller than he used to.

I feel a bit the same way about the Sky advertisements. I am glad to see Cantona back on the billboards, but once an image becomes a brand, it loses some of its mystique.

Cantona's bank protest would be an own goal, warns thinktank
Bank customers urged not to heed former footballer's call to withdraw their money from banks

http://static.guim.co.uk/sys-images/guardian/Pix/cartoons/2010/12/3/1291399835973/Eric-Cantona-006.jpg

Campaigners for an overhaul of the banking system are urging customers not to take their cash out of banks during next week's protests led by former Manchester United footballer Eric Cantona.

While Andrew Simms, policy director at nef, the new economics foundation thinktank, has sympathy with the public's frustration over the banks, he said that mass withdrawals of cash from the system were not the answer.

"I don't think people should take their money out of the bank and stuff it under the mattress. But I would endorse anyone who has concerns about their bank taking the money out and putting it into one more closely aligned with their views."

Tuesday has been earmarked as the day for bank customers to heed a call by Cantona, left, to withdraw money from banks. In an interview with a local newspaper in France, Cantona said: "We must go to the bank. In this case there would be a real revolution. It's not complicated.

"Instead of going on the streets you simply go to the bank in your country and withdraw your money, and if there are a lot of people withdrawing their money the system collapses. No weapons, no blood, or anything like that."

While their is little evidence that mass withdrawals will take place, French minister Christine Lagarde suggested that the Frenchman was better off sticking to football than dabbling in finance.

"Mr Cantona is no stranger to controversy. He is a great footballer, but I'm not sure we need to pay heed to all his suggestions. There are those who play football magnificently, and I would not dare to try. I think it's best for everyone to stick to their own speciality," Lagarde said.

Simms said nef was among a handful of organisations which on Monday would launch a campaign to urge the public to put pressure on the government to take action against the banks. A one-minute animation portraying investment banks as a giant vampire squid wrapped around the face of humanity – as Goldman Sachs was once described – will be used to urge the public to lobby their MPs to ask the coalition if it has a plan to tame the banks."We want to know if whether behind the scenes a deal has been struck to let the banks off the hook," said Simms.

Top bankers are thought to be promising to cut their bonuses and pay billions into David Cameron's Big Society Bank in return for truce on taxes and hostility over bonues.

Eric Cantona: his best quotes
Eric Cantona has always mixed his unique brand of football with philosophy. Here are some of his more memorable quotes

http://i.telegraph.co.uk/telegraph/multimedia/archive/01777/cantona_1777763b.jpg

If you have only one passion in life – football – and you pursue it to the exclusion of everything else, it becomes very dangerous. When you stop doing this activity it is as though you are dying. The death of that activity is a death in itself.

I didn't study; I live.

I prefer to play and lose rather than win, because I know in advance I'm going to win.

When the seagulls follow the trawler, it is because they think sardines will be thrown into the sea.

I stopped playing football because I'd done as much as I could. I needed something which was going to excite me as much as football had excited me.

Sometimes in life one experiences an emotion which is so strong that it is difficult to think, or to reason.

I try to find different ways of expressing myself. Without that I will die.

In football you have an adversary; in cinema that adversary is yourself

Often there are players who have only football as a way of expressing themselves and never develop other interests. And when they no longer play football, they no longer do anything; they no longer exist, or rather they have the sensation of no longer existing.

The pressure people put on themselves and the rivalry between the teams is much more marked. And I think that's a good thing. As long as that rivalry remains within the spirit of competition, it con only spur everyone on.

My best moment? I have a lot of good moments but the one I prefer is when I kicked the hooligan.

We knew that you don't get to be world champions without a struggle.

I'm proud of what I achieved there, but a life built on memories is not much of a life.

Sometimes in life one experiences an emotion which is so strong that it is difficult to think, or to reason.

Sometimes you get submerged by emotion. I think it's very important to express it – which doesn't necessarily mean hitting someone.

Brewokan, Eric Cantona Jadi Penjahat

http://preview.shareapic.net/preview7/024068804.jpg (http://www.shareapic.net/View-24068804-Gallery-1.html)*

Eric Cantona Kembali Ke Dunia Sepakbola

Eagles fan karate kicked by Cantona in court over assault allegations

An Eagles fan who was famously karate kicked by French striker Eric Cantona, has been charged with assault at a children's football match.

Matthew Simmons, 36, from Thornton Heath appeared in Kingston Crown Court on Friday and denied allegations of assault.

He is alleged to have become involved in a fight while watching his 13-year-old son play a match in August last year.

Mr Simmons was famously attacked by Cantona in January 1995 after he was sent off the pitch during a Manchester United vs Crystal Palace match at Selhurst Park.

The striker leapt over an advertising board to kick the football fan, a bricklayer, in the chest then punch him.

Cantona, who is now an actor and manager of the French beach football team, was suspended for nine months and ordered to serve 120 hours of community service.

Cantona Desak Fergie Boyong Valbuena
Mathieu Valbuena ditaksir berharga £10 juta.
Oleh Aditya Ramadhan

Eric Cantona, salah satu legenda Manchester United (MU), mendesak Sir Alex Ferguson memboyong playmaker Mathieu Valbuena.

Sejumlah klub diam-diam menjajagi kemungkinan memboyongnya.

Valbuena ditaksir berharga £10 juta.

Kabar lain menyebutkan Fergie lebih menyukai Daniele De Rossi, gelandang AS Roma.

MUST READ: Cantona on Pele, Cruyff and Sir Alex

By: Frank Scicluna on 19 February 2011
TrulyReds

First thing first. I must confess that I’m an unashamed Eric Cantona disciple hanging onto his every word – yes, even after 14 years of him departing Old Trafford at the relatively young age of 30. I have little doubt that the vast majority of Manchester United fans feel precisely the same so when The Kings latest interview was published on the ESPN.com website on Friday, it simply had to appear on Truly Reds just in case anyone missed it.

It’s long and it’s detailed but I’m not about to apologise for refusing to edit it. Cantona was asked some difficult questions by David Hirshey who has been covering football for more than 30 years and has written about the game for The New York Times, Time Magazine and ESPN amongst other publications. If you don’t have the time to read it in one sitting, come back to it because it’s an interview not to be missed by any United fan.

The Gospel of Eric Cantona by David Hirshey ESPN.com, February 18, 2011 “The first thing you notice about Eric Cantona is that his collar is still up, 14 years after he bestrode Old Trafford as if it were his personal kingdom. Granted, he’s wearing an Army-green sweater and not a red Manchester United jersey, but time hasn’t diminished the swagger that saw him score some of the most memorable goals in the history of soccer — and execute a leaping kung-fu kick on a fan that would have put Nigel de Jong to shame.

No wonder the British consortium that owns the new New York Cosmos anointed Le Roi as the man to bring the fabled franchise back to life. After all, Cantona spent his career making something out of nothing on the soccer field. And let’s face it: Right now the Cosmos have no players, no stadium, no league.

But they do possess two priceless assets – the name of the last professional American team the rest of the world took seriously and a charismatic Frenchman as their director of soccer.

http://www.trulyreds.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/Eric-Cantona-Manchester-United-Liverpool-FA-C_1191194-e1290974375671.jpg

Apart from his grey-flecked beard, the 44-year-old Cantona looks remarkably like the virtuoso who helped transform United from a club with massive support but minimal silverware into a juggernaut that won four league titles and played the kind of swashbuckling soccer that has since become its trademark.

He was voted United’s player of the century when he retired in 1997. Even today, it is not uncommon to hear the Old Trafford faithful burst into rapturous chants of “Ooh-ah, Cantona” or songs like “On the first day of Christmas my true love sent to me, Eric Cantona …” Equal parts philosopher, provocateur and performance artist, Cantona still retains the mad glint of a man who doesn’t care if the rest of the world is in on the joke.

When we met in his suite at an uber-trendy hotel in SoHo, I told him that in 1996 he had broken my Gooner heart with two thunderbolts of such ferocity that Arsenal goalkeeper David Seaman, then England’s No. 1, could only admire them as they flew by him.

“Which one hurt more?” he asked with an impish grin “The free kick or the volley?”

“Actually” I said “I was hoping you’d apologize for both.”

“I apologize for nothing” he fired back.

The conversation then swerved back and forth from Cantona’s mythic career to his romantic vision for the Cosmos to his love for Johan Cruyff. His English is heavily accented, and he often speaks in half-baked Cantona-isms that sound more profound than they really are. A decade later, philosophers are still trying to deconstruct his most celebrated koan: “When the seagulls follow the trawler, it’s because they think sardines will be thrown in the sea.”

Only one subject was off the table: the French national team. Though he scored 20 goals in 45 appearances for Les Bleus, Cantona was famously dropped from the squad in 1988 for calling the manager Henri Michel “a bag of s—” on television. So I thought he would have at least been amused by the French team’s mutiny at the 2010 World Cup when Nicolas Anelka was sent home for criticizing coach Raymond Domenech.

“Plus ca change …” I said, trotting out the extent of my high school French. “What did you think of the World Cup farce?” Suddenly, a “red mist” descended on Cantona and he glared at me with the slightly menacing look of a man who was still capable of leaping over the table between us and implanting his shoe in my sternum. “I don’t know about the French team,” he snarled. “Maybe I don’t know because I don’t care.” I took the hint and moved on.

http://www.trulyreds.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/cantona1use.jpg

DH: I don’t know if you saw the Champions League match Wednesday between Arsenal and Barcelona, but Robin van Persie scored a Cantona-like goal that was so outrageously cocky the keeper never saw it coming.

EC: I was traveling to New York so I didn’t get to watch the game but I saw the highlights later. No one expected Van Persie to shoot from that angle, but that is the beauty of football. Sometimes you surprise the goalkeeper and sometimes the goalkeeper surprises you. In my career, I tried to do more of the first than the second.

DH: What do you think of the way Barca plays with all their tippy-tappy passing? Is that a style you admire and hope to emulate with the Cosmos?

EC: This is nothing new. It goes back to Cruyff and Total Football. He brought it to Barcelona when he was the manager in the early ’90s, and they have perfected it. It’s all about knowing what you’re going to do when you receive the ball. Who is free, where is the space, always with one touch. But not everyone can play that way. At Manchester United, there were very good players who did other things. Roy Keane, Paul Ince, they were not going to pass you to death.

DH: How do you think those United teams would fare against the Barcelona of today?

EC: When I played, you could only use a few non-English players in European competition. But if we could use all our foreign players, then we would have the same chance against Barcelona that Arsenal has. I always wanted to play against the best. All my life, I need to test myself, to risk the art inside me.

DH: Is that why you were always getting in trouble as a player — because you were risking your art?

EC: I think life is a big game we play. It’s a circus, but the press wants to treat everything so seriously. They try to analyze the money, the power, the player. I enjoy watching them trying to analyze me. So when I go to a press conference, I don’t play their game. I play my own game. I talk about seagulls. It’s not about what I say. It’s the action that means something, not the words.

DH: But the action you’re most famous for is jumping into the stands and kicking a fan who called you names. If the words mean nothing …

EC: I never said I was an example. I don’t want to be a role model. I don’t think I’m more important than somebody trying to insult me. I’m a human being. He’s a human being. We’re equals and if I want to kick another human being, I do it. Who is wrong? Me for acting like a man or the press for making me into a superior person who comes from another planet?

DH: Is it just a coincidence that the other most famous incident of a player losing his sangfroid also involved a Frenchman? Is there something in the water in Marseille, where you and Zidane grew up, that turned you both into excitable boys?

EC: There is nothing wrong with Marseille. We both came from immigrant families who worked very hard so we could play football. Marseille gave us a good education about life.

DH: Have you ever talked to Zizou about his head-butt in the 2006 World Cup final?

EC: No, we don’t speak about these things. He’s younger than me, so I have not spent much time with him. I think the craziest thing he did in the World Cup final was the way he took the penalty kick. That is what I prefer to remember, not the head-butt.

DH: Zidane has since said that he’s sorry for his cheap shot. Do you have any regrets about what you did at Selhurst Park?

EC: Yes, I regret not kicking him harder. We are not all saints. I know there are some players who take their image very seriously.

DH: Yes, I believe you’ll be working with one on the Cosmos. Fellow by the name of Pele. He’s the honorary chairman of the club, and he takes this role-model business very seriously. On the other hand, the Cosmos’ “international ambassador” Giorgio Chinaglia is more like you. He doesn’t care what people think of him as long as he’s winning trophies.

EC: Pele and I are very different personalities. And I know about Giorgio from watching the film about the Cosmos, “Once In A Lifetime” I am not worried. I don’t think we all have to be the same person. One of the great things that Ferguson did at Manchester United and still does is to make sure not everyone is the same. He wants to have strong personalities, which is important to win games, but look at the difference between Beckham and Keane or Neville and Solskjaer.

I know many managers who want everyone to be the same because that is easier, but I like players who are not afraid to be themselves. What is most important is to make them feel comfortable, to give them the confidence so they feel free to express themselves. It works not just in football, but in life.

DH: What happens, though, when players become so confident they feel they are bigger than the team? Ferguson let Keane and Beckham go when he thought they had crossed the line.

EC: If you feel they are no longer right for the personality of the team, then you get rid of them and find others. But if I had a choice between strong personalities and someone who never says anything to upset the manager, I take the one who thinks for himself.

DH: There is so much money in the game today that there are far more players who are motivated by their bank accounts than in your day. What did you think, for instance, of Wayne Rooney threatening to leave United if he didn’t get a pay raise to $300,000 a week?

EC: I have no problem with players taking their share, because without players you have no game. But money cannot be your motivation. If the money is crazy, you can go play for another team. But the demands don’t always come from the player. There are people around him who are trying to manipulate him.

I think the question we have to ask the players at the Cosmos Academy is “Why do you want to play professional football?” Do you want to be a great player, or do you want to become rich and famous? What is your dream? If you just want to become a professional and make money, I don’t want you on my team. But if you want to become the best player in the world and score a goal in the last minute to win the game, then I will help you become that. Me, when I was 4 years old, it was my dream to play with the best. When I got older, they paid me to play, but I would have played for nothing. I didn’t become a football player to become rich. Yes, rich as a person. Trophies. Memories.

DH: With so many of the world’s big clubs, including Manchester United, piling up massive debt, are you concerned about the future of the game?

EC: What I think is a shame is that people from lower backgrounds can’t afford to go to the stadium anymore. These are the real fans of football. The game is in their blood. Football is not for rich people. Sure, rich people love football, but it is not such a big part of their life like it is for the working class. I think clubs should make a quarter or half of the stadium where the tickets are not expensive, where these people don’t have to make a big sacrifice to go to the game. It’s their children who will grow up to be the great professional players, not the children of rich people.

DH: What kind of game do you envision the Cosmos playing?

EC: When Johan Cruyff was coaching Barcelona, one of his players was Pep Guardiola who now manages the team. Guardiola was not big and strong and when Barcelona was playing Mallorca, he went up against Miguel Angel Nadal, Rafael’s uncle who was tall and powerful. Cruyff said to Guardiola, “Don’t jump with him, because you will have no chance to win the ball. Try to realize where the ball will be going and be there. Think ahead. Anticipate.” Clever tactics like that. Cruyff is an inspiration to me. When I was a kid and he was a player at Ajax, I wanted to play like him. Controlling the game. It’s all about Johan Cruyff.

DH: If it’s all about Cruyff, why don’t you add him to your stable of legends in the Cosmos front office?

EC: Because now we have Eric Cantona.

No wonder I love the man, think about it. Six seasons in England brought him five championship winning medals and would have almost certainly been a perfect six out of six if not for THAT kick at Selhurst Park! Eric Cantona is not simply a Manchester United legend, he remains a Premier League icon.

Cantona: Ferguson Sulit Digantikan

"Ia mengalami begitu banyak pergantian generasi pemain.

(DM)

Cantona Pernah Tak Dianggap di Inggris
Fitra Iskandar - Okezone

(fit)

Cantona Tidak Sesali Tendangan Kung-fu-nya
Arya Perdhana - detiksport

http://images.detik.com/content/2011/03/05/73/Cantona-Roslan-isi.jpg

http://stat.k.kidsklik.com/data/photo/2009/11/21/0932004p.jpg

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson is a human cyclone, says Eric Cantona
Eric Cantona has attributed Sir Alex Ferguson’s longevity and success to the fact that he resembles “a great cyclone”.

http://i.telegraph.co.uk/multimedia/archive/01839/cantona_1832740a_1839971c.jpg

It should be no surprise that the man who brought seagulls and trawlers into English football’s lexicon has a slightly unorthodox explanation for why Ferguson has survived for so long, and with such success.

According to Cantona, speaking exclusively to ESPN, the secret of the Manchester United manager’s longevity in a career that has seen him earn 11 Premier League titles and two European Cups is not his tactical wizardry, his drive and his determination or his man-management.

“Maybe because he has a lot of humility, a lot of humanity,” said the Frenchman, when asked why his former manager has thrived for 25 years at Old Trafford.

“He is a great psychologist. He is very passionate [about] the game. But maybe sometimes he can take [his] distance. Of course he is a great tactician, a great manager. But he is a great cyclone.”

Like so many of the Frenchman’s abstract aphorisms, comparing Ferguson to a weather system seems to make rather more sense after a moment’s thought than at first glance.

Martin Atkinson was simply the most recent victim of the thunderstorms which exist on Ferguson’s extremities. Kenny Dalglish, who the United manager faces on Sunday, appeared to acknowledge yesterday that at his core, all is calm, suggesting that the noise which invariably emanates from Old Trafford before significant fixtures is “all part of the game”.

For Cantona, though, such an obvious, logical explanation would rather ruin the fun. “I think he is a great cyclone,” said the Frenchman, now helping oversee the development of the second incarnation of the New York Cosmos MLS franchise.

“Because he can deal with all generations of players. Now he is nearly 70, but he can deal with players who are 18.

“And in this generation, it is even more different than in others, because the world has changed. It is a virtual world. Some young ones, at 18 years old, sometimes live in a virtual world.

“So it is even more difficult for managers but he can do it very well. It is not so easy to adapt to all generations every time, but he can see them because he works with all generations. He is a kind of genius.

“I admire him because there are so many differences between generations and he has adapted and at the same time tried to help players develop their own personalities.

“He does not want to have all the same players with the same personalities. He tries to help people develop their own. And then they find the freedom and the energies to be even more competitive.”

That principle unquestionably applied to Cantona, a lost soul at Auxerre and Marseille before Ferguson somehow persuaded Howard Wilkinson to allow the Frenchman to leave Leeds.

Now 44, he remains arguably the most successful foreign player ever to grace these shores – four Premier League titles at Old Trafford, as well as one at Elland Road, suggest as much – but, typically counter-intuitively, he feels the trail he blazed may have damaged the English game.

“Maybe there are too many foreign players in England,” he said. “It is not good for the national team. Now Liverpool and Arsenal have more than 10 foreign players, so you have less and less English players. Even in the academies, where they are very young, there are too many foreign players, which is not good for the national team.”

Former Manchester Utd Star Cantona Will Succeed In USA Where Beckham Failed
By Matt Weiner

New York Cosmos CEO Carl Johnson reveals why new Director of Football Eric Cantona will help them crack America.

http://i56.tinypic.com/nf4g91.jpg

“I am very honoured to join the legendary New York Cosmos. It’s a big project, a wonderful project. The Cosmos are very strong, beautifully made, with a great past. It’s kind of a mix between football and art.”

And with that characteristically elegant statement, the King was back in the game. Eric Cantona, formerly of Manchester United and Leeds United, perhaps the most charismatic player ever to grace a football pitch was unveiled as the Director of Football for the New York Cosmos.

The Cantona announcement is the start of an ambitious bid by three Brits, former Tottenham vice-chairman Paul Kemsley, Beckham’s former manager Terry Byrne and Carl Johnson to to make football really matter to Americans. The Beckham experiment at LA Galaxy may have sold a few shirts and gossip magazines in the states but the team failed to win silverware and nobody’s going to worship losers.

The announcement, which came close on the heels of the news that Pele was to be the club’s President stunned a football world which had assumed that when the Frenchman left Man Utd for Hollywood, the transfer was permanent. The Cosmos may be yet to build a stadium, recruit a manager or even employ any players but if there’s one thing it has in spades, it’s our attention.

Who will be next, every football fan across the planet is now asking. Maradona as manager? Cruyff as assistant coach? Maldini and Romario as ball boys? This is a living fantasy football and the man living it is New York Cosmos CEO Carl Johnston. The 42 year old Londoner grew up supporting Tottenham – “I saw Martin Peters make his debut in the Seventies”, he says, visibly still thrilled about the experience of witnessing his footballing heroes. Now he is signing them.

Despite the years Cantona has spent out of professional football, appointing Cantona for Johnson was a no-brainer. “A legendary visionary like him will have a tremendous number of opinions and beliefs. He was a phenomenal player, so how can you not get emotionally engaged at the prospect of working with someone like him.”

Spotting legendary visionaries isn’t a problem for Johnson. As head of New York and London based marketing agency Anomaly – named in 2008 as #24 in the “World’s Most Innovative Companies” by Fast Company magazine – he has pioneered an entirely new approach to his business. Rather than just create brands for clients, they prefer to build the products from scratch themselves. “We would rather invent the next VitaminWater than do the ads for VitaminWater,” he explains.

The Cosmos experiment began a year ago when former Tottenham vice-chairman Paul Kemsley bought the rights to the club from former general manager Peppe Pinton and approached Johnson whose clients already included Umbro and Manchester City Football Club.

Instead of being paid a fee for marketing the Cosmos brand, Johnson has taken a share of the club – a business model he calls “skin in the game”. “Sometimes professional companies get paid whether it succeeds of it fails,” he explains. “When you do it this way you could end up with nothing or you could end up doing well but either way you are absolutely committed. Your skin is on the line. This way means it ****ing matters.”

So what next for Johnson, Cantona and the Cosmos? Unable to join the MLS until 2013 because the Red Bulls franchise in New Jersey has exclusive rights to the region for another two years, the club has big plans for this summer. A series of ‘Inspiration’ games are planned. These, Johnson bills as ultra-competitive exhibitions games in which two teams of global superstars will play alongside and against players from the Cosmos’s budding youth set-up. By 2013, the Cosmos hope to be ensconced in a 30-40,000 capacity stadium in Queens and will then be ready to take on America.

“The really big win will be if we break football through its current fan base in the US. Kids love it and the national team is getting better but there’s no Manchester United of the MLS,” says Johnson. “The New York Cosmos could be that domestic powerhouse.”

The New York Cosmos, after all, does have a history of success. They were five-time champions of the North American Soccer League in a 10-year period between 1972 and 1982 before the competition folded in 1985. Cantona, too, is not the type to settle for anything less than victory. “I will do everything that I can to help the New York Cosmos find our way to regain the number one position in the United States and then for us to become one of the best clubs in the world over the coming years,” the Premier League legend told the press on his appointment.

Ultimately for Johnson, Cantona and The Cosmos, mere silverware is not enough though. “In order to continue the path the original Cosmos set out, we aim to be bigger than just a team, we want a place in popular culture, in media, in entertainment, in celebrity and in fashion. The goal is to make a real dent on the culture of the United States.”

Eric Cantona excited by New York Cosmos adventure: It's a rock 'n' roll club

Former Manchester United star believes new MLS franchise have the opportunity to dominate American football and names Barcelona as his inspiration.
By Salvatore Landolina

New York Cosmos director of sport Eric Cantona believes the club can push forward with their objectives of returning to the big time in MLS.

The former Manchester United forward took up the role at the club in January to join forces with honorary president Pele, who played for the club during their heyday in the late 1970s, following investment by English businessman Paul Kemsley.

Cantona knows the road back to top-flight football in the United States is a long one, but he is confident of doing a good job, as the Cosmos - named after the team that played in the North American Soccer League in the 1970s - plan to add to the ever growing MLS.

"The Cosmos have a great past and a strong history," Cantona told France Soir.

"It was created by the people of Warner. It is a mixture of football and art, a rock 'n' roll club. New York and me are a perfect match.

"This country is changing football wise. It's evolving and they have plenty to build."

The Frenchman is looking well ahead, and said the model to follow is the Barcelona of Johan Cruyff.

"The plan is to win trophies but also to train, build automation. The model is Barcelona under Cruyff. This is not a job but a passion," he concluded.

Eric Cantona - Legend or Beast?
Author: Jack Richardson

Eric Cantona - a typical Frenchman? His mystical style has won over many during his playing career, both on and off the pitch, but is there a darker side to 'The King'?

Eric was born in Marseilles, and eventually joined his boyhood club in 1988, for a fee of 22 million francs, comfortably breaking the previous transfer record in French football. It was a short while after this transfer, from Auxerre, that he showed the first time of another side to him. After a rather public disagreement with the national selector, Henri Michel, he called him 'de sac a merde', which translates to a bag of...I'm sure you can guess. The outburst earned him a one year ban from national selection.

Indeed, with only 45 appearances made for France 'A', scoring 20 goals, one could say he never really realized his potential in the world of national football. He has only one international title his name, winning the 'Championnat D'Europe Espoirs' in 1988. He disagreed with the French system, and his move to England was far from surprising. After a trial at Sheffield Wednesday, and a short stint at Leeds United, he was transferred to Manchester United, for a fee of £1.2m. It was at Manchester United that he quickly earned his nickname 'Eric the King', and any football watcher, young or old, can only admire his chipped goal into the Stretford End net, and the celebration of his raised arms, responding to the rapturous home crowd.

However, his worst moment also occurred in a Man Utd shirt. In January 1995, after a red card in a match against Crystal Palace, he snapped when a supporter insulted him. Call it red flag to a bull. Call it the dark Cantona. Call it a human reaction to being called unspeakable things. Something clicked. It happens to the best, just ask David Beckham, or even more famously, Zinedine Zidane. In Cantona's case, he kung-fu kicked the supporter, or, as in the far more elegant French language 'il a fait son fameux coup de pied circulaire'.

Cantona has never apologized for the incident, and he recently called it 'the best memory in his career'. Others have a far dimmer view on it, and it was recently names one of the worst seven moments of football. He was condemned to 120 hours of community service.

During a memorable press conference shortly afterwards, he said in English "When the seagulls follow the trawler, it is because they think the sardines will be thrown back into the sea" and walked out. Only a French player could do such a thing. Call it poetic, call it madness, one couldn't imagine Wayne Rooney coming out with a similar statement (in fact, any comprehensible statement from Rooney would be appreciated...)

So is Cantona a bigger success in England than in France? The man certainly believes so, and it's clear that he revels in being adored by the English public. In one advert of his sponsors, he was stood behind the English flag, and said "66 was a great year for English football....Eric was born". He loved the derision he caused, and did nothing to stop it. He was unique, and he needed to be adored, and adored he was. To be anything but the center of attention wouldn't do for Cantona. His football skills were awesome, but his personality dwarfs those by a considerable distance.

He has recently become the manager of the American football team the New York Cosmos, and stated his ambition to make them the best team in the world. His vision was outstanding in his first press conference, and furthermore totally outrageous. But that's Cantona. The English Frenchman. A darker side? Perhaps. But then, aren't all geniuses flawed in some way?

Eric Cantona's kick victim spared jail for assault on football coach

The Crystal Palace fan who was famously kicked by Eric Cantona at a Manchester United match in 1995 has been spared jail for punching another man at a children's football game.

http://static.guim.co.uk/sys-images/Guardian/Pix/pictures/2009/5/15/1242407951366/Eric-Cantonas-infamous-ku-001.jpg

Matthew Simmons, 36, who was kicked by Cantona during United’s game with Palace on January 25 1995, was handed a six-month jail sentence, suspended for two years, plus ordered to undertake 150 hours of community service for attacking Stuart Cooper – the former manager of his son's football team.

Last month, a jury found Simmons guilty of assault causing actual bodily harm after hearing the 36-year-old clashed with Mr Cooper at a pre-season match following his the latter’s decision to drop his son from his under-8s side, allegedly after learning of the Cantona incident.

On sentencing Simmons at Kingston crown court, Judge Michael Hopmeier said: ‘On August 7 2010, families came to watch a football match. Your own son was playing as well as the son of your victim.

‘For reasons that remain unclear, you decided to assault your victim by punching him repeatedly in the face, arms and body. It seems there been some antagonism between you and him as a result of events that had taken place some years previously.’

As well as the suspended sentence and community service, Simmons was also ordered to pay £1,000 in compensation to his victim and £2,000 in prosecution costs.

Samir Nasri Bisa Jadi Penerus Eric Cantona Di Manchester United
7 Jun 2011 15:52:00

Spekulasi transfer Samir Nasri terus berkembang.

Justru kalo menurut pendapat ane malah Benzema yang cocok jadi penerus Cantona, jarang gocek tapi akurasi tendangannya bagus, yaa walaupun Benzema agak kurang "galak" dibanding King Cantona hehehe :peace:

Hehehe Utk benzema sayang sekali tidak sempat dilatih oleh OPA ALEX padahal punya talent yg lumayan hebat. Tak perlu ada yg diragukan utk seorang benzema. Sangat sangat mirip king eric.

Return of the King! Cantona set for Old Trafford return in Scholes' testimonial

Manchester United icon Eric Cantona is set for a sensational return back to Old Trafford.

Cantona's comeback has been confirmed as part of Paul Scholes' testimonial game on August 5, when the Frenchman will coach the legendary New York Cosmos side, currently bidding to gain admittance to Major League Soccer.

Welcome back, Eric: The United legend will be at Old Trafford for Scholes' testimonial

Although a decent crowd could have been anticipated anyway to mark Scholes' retirement, which was announced in the wake of Manchester United's Champions League final defeat to Barcelona last month, Cantona's presence will only fuel interest further.

The charismatic striker is regarded as one of the most significant figures in the club's history, proving to be the catalyst for United's emergence as the dominant side of the Premier League era.

Legend: Cantona is revered at Old Trafford

He quit suddenly in 1997, having won four titles and two domestic doubles in his five seasons at Old Trafford.

'I wish to congratulate Paul for such an incredible career at Manchester United and I am looking forward to returning to Old Trafford in my new role with the New York Cosmos,' said Cantona, who recently celebrated his 45th birthday.

Following David Beckham's return for Gary Neville's testimonial last month, it marks another significant day for United, and Scholes in particular.

'This is going to be a big night for me and my family but one which I intend to enjoy and I will savour every moment,' said Scholes.

'I have spent my whole footballing life at Manchester United, so this will be an emotional farewell.

'This club is special in many ways but the fans are the best and I have always appreciated their support throughout my career.

'I hope they enjoy the night, especially seeing the Boss and Eric battling it out in front of the dug outs.'

Scholes has committed himself to a coaching career at Old Trafford, having marked the end of his playing days, during which he secured 10 league titles, a figure second only to Ryan Giggs.

He is widely acknowledged to be one of the finest players of his generation, with Sir Alex Ferguson all the more appreciative because Scholes turned his back on the celebrity lifestyle so many of his contemporaries revel in.

The Big Apple: Cantona (right) pictured in New York last month

'Paul's retirement was typical of the man, low key, he was safe on holiday just so he could avoid any media interviews,' said Ferguson.

'However he won't be able to hide away this time and it will be fantastic for the fans to be able to bid farewell to this exceptional footballer.

'The accolades he's received have been well deserved but for me Paul is one of those players who turns up, plays his football and it is that natural ability that makes Paul unique and revered by many, including myself.

'Now from one great player to another, Eric Cantona. I am going to relish this touchline showdown, one Gaelic mind to another.

Waving goodbye: Scholes announced his retirement shortly after the Champions League final defeat to Barca

'Neither of us will want to lose this one, it is sure to be a great night and a well deserved recognition for Paul.'

Brazilian superstar Pele will be in attendance too in his role as Cosos honorary president. He played for the team during their previous incarnation, when they attracted superstar names from all over the world.

The club eventually crumbled, along with the demise of the North American Soccer League in 1984.

Former Tottenham vice-chairman Paul Kemsley acquired the rights to the Cosmos name in 2009.

He is aiming to secure an MLS franchise by 2013 and is using guest players to fulfil friendlies in order to revive interest in the Cosmos name.

OT 100 #66: Munich tribute

http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u143/alexmanutd/newalbum3/img_10_32779_3892.jpg

The 40th anniversary of the Munich disaster and Eric Cantona's return to Old Trafford mingled on an electric evening in August 1998...

Munich Testimonial, 18 August 1998
MANCHESTER UNITED 8
Giggs, Scholes, Cruyff, Notman (2), Butt, Cantona

ERIC CANTONA EUROPEAN XI 4
Papin, Blanc, Wilson OG, Dahlin

Attendance: 55,121

The Background: As United sought opposition for a testimonial to fittingly and financially honour the victims and survivors of Munich, four decades after the crash, Eric Cantona wrote to chairman Martin Edwards revealing his desire to make a one-off playing return at his beloved Old Trafford. The Frenchman, who had retired in May 1997, had unwittingly given the Reds a chance to combine the two events. Cantona's schedule - he had just signed up to play a boxer in the film Mookie - meant that the match had to take place six months after the anniversary, on 18 August 1998.

The Occasion: Simply Red singer Mick Hucknall crooned an acapella version of 'Every Time We Say Goodbye', before the two teams took to the field and formed a guard of honour. On one side, United; the other, a blend of talents from across Europe including Paul Gascoigne, Laurent Blanc and Jean-Pierre Papin who comprised the Eric Cantona European XI. Then out strode Cantona, flanked by his son Raphael, to a rapturous reception from a crowd of 55,121 baying supporters.

As a spectacle, the 90 minutes were typically light-hearted, entertaining testimonial fare, with the show stolen by opposition goalkeeper Pascal Olmeta, who regularly embarked on mazy runs. When he wasn't creating chaos outfield, the Frenchman was conducting the supporters behind the goal and dancing to an increasingly-hectic rendition of 'Fergie, sign him up.' Cantona was Olmeta's team-mate until half-time, when the star of the show switched sides with the score locked at 2-2.

A somewhat busier second period ended 8-4 in United's favour, with the Reds' seventh fittingly scored by the abdicated King. While the defending left much to be desired, the Frenchman's winding run and chipped finish brought the loudest cheer of the evening.

The Aftermath: Cantona took the chance to say a belated goodbye to the supporters with whom he had forged such a tight bond in his five years at Old Trafford. As he struggled with his emotions, he simply said: "I am sorry. I just lost my passion for the game. I gave everything for 10 years. I had five wonderful years here - the best of my career. I love you all. You have given me such a wonderful feeling. Thank you for coming. I hope to see you soon." While the Frenchman had hogged the limelight during ticket sales, the match itself and immediate aftermath, his presence had guaranteed a sell-out crowd and a £1million boost for the testimonial fund which, after deductions, was divided up between those who survived the crash and the dependants of those who died.

TAHUKAH ANDA??

Eric Cantona: Leaving Manchester United was like quitting heroin

Eric Cantona has likened leaving Manchester United to ‘quitting’ a heroin habit.

The Frenchman said he had rarely returned to Old Trafford because he found it so hard to leave in the first place.

He said: "If you are a heroin addict, and you’ve gone through the agonies of withdrawal, you don’t go back and start hanging out with your dealer. I found leaving Manchester United very, very hard.

"It was, as I say, like quitting a class A drug. Psychiatrists have demonstrated that the body of a retired professional footballer can replicate the kind of symptoms that you get with abrupt opiate withdrawal. And that’s why I’ve avoided going back."

The star, who scored 82 goals in 185 games for the Reds, said he even struggled to watch them on television, but added that he was lucky to have other ‘consuming’ interests.

He told GQ magazine: "You retire, but you’re still aching to play.

"But in order to play, you have to resist certain temptations, and train hard.

"And I just didn’t have the desire to do that any more."

Cantona: City need young stars

Manchester United legend Eric Cantona has warned Manchester City they will never match his former club until they start to spend on their academy as they have done on their first-team squad.

Once again City owner Sheikh Mansour has splashed the cash this summer, investing heavily on Sergio Aguero, Gael Clichy and Stefan Savic, with the prospect of a hefty bid for Samir Nasri likely to be lodged before the Premier League gets under way in 10 days' time.

But Cantona, believes it will become a massive handicap unless City's once famed youth policy is restored to its former glory, and said: "United are the best team. I don't know how City work, maybe they are working on the academy, but they want to spend millions to buy players to build a team."

He continued: "They have been successful because they won the FA Cup but if they only want to do that, they will not be as strong as Manchester United. United work on the long term, with young talent."

Cantona also launched a broadside at Carlos Tevez and Mario Balotelli, who have this summer both criticised the lifestyle in Manchester.

"They don't like the place?" he laughed.

"It depends upon where they come from. If they come from Milan, maybe. Also it depends why they have come.

"I had a great time here and a great time in the city but the most important thing for me was to play for the best club in the world, with the best players in the world.

"I was a professional player. I didn't try to find a city to enjoy it.

"The greatest time you can have is on the pitch."

Cantona: Masa Fergie Masih Bakal Panjang

http://klimg.com/bola.net/library/p/headline/0000059148.jpg

(sun/lex)

Schweinsteiger: Zidane Adalah Sesuatu Yang Istimewa

Eric Cantona Ingin Jadi Presiden Prancis

http://www.metrotvnews.com/image.php?image=bank_images/actual/78032.jpg

Eric Cantona is running for the French presidency (or not)

http://images.detik.com/content/2012/01/10/73/Cantona-isi.jpg

Following his unsuccessful attempt to start a financial revolution in France by calling for people to take their money out of the corrupt and failing banks, Eric Cantona has decided that the only way to create change is to do it yourself. So, he's decided to run for the French presidency.

Before the 45-year-old Manchester United legend, former French national team captain and kung-fu fan kicker can begin his campaign, he needs the signatures of 500 mayors before the end of February. So to begin his signature collecting efforts, he wrote an impassioned letter.

From the AP:

Newspaper Liberation printed a copy of the letter Cantona sent to mayors around France on its website Monday. In it, Cantona pledges to fight against social inequality if given the chance to do so.

"I am an attentive citizen of our era, of the opportunities it offers to young people—(which are) too limited—of the injustices it generates—too many, too violent, too systematic," Cantona wrote in the letter.

"I am a committed citizen," he continued. "This engagement obliges me to speak up, more seriously than usual, but also with a keen sense of my responsibility, at a time when our country is faced with difficult choices."

This obviously needs to happen. Eric Cantona must become the next French president. If only so he can deliver a few flying kicks to the mouthiest members of the UN.

UPDATE: Well, we should've known this was too good to be true. It turns out this is just a publicity stunt to gain support for the country's homeless crisis. Cantona is looking for signatures and will hold a series of presidential type rallies, but only to raise awareness of the issue.

How would you feel if you saw on television that someone you used to work with was planning to become president of their country?

Surprised, maybe, but then maybe you didn't work with Eric Cantona like me.

I saw his stunt this week and thought, 'That's Eric'. He's his own man and always has been.

Nobody had a clue what he was going to do next, from jumping in the crowd to kick a fan, to retiring from football at the peak of his fame.

Most of the United team lived in big houses in south Manchester, Cantona lived in a rented three bedroomed semi-detached house in an area none of us had heard of.

Cantona is from Marseille and is not afraid to fight against what he sees as injustice. He grew up in a cave.

Read that last sentence again. A cave. So it is not surprising that poor housing has always been close to his heart and that was his publicity gimmick when he announced he was running for president this week.

Cantona was a mass of contradictions.

He was usually a quiet, private man, on the outside of the dressing room looking in. Yet he was a happy man, always looking to socialise, always polite and friendly.

He was not aloof, nor arrogant. He pretended that he could not speak English when it suited, but spoke it near perfectly at other times.

David May, our teammate, used to adopt a French accent and say: "Today you iz speak Engleesh. Eric? Or no speak Engleesh today?"

Cantona would smile at that one. He loved the crack in the dressing room and did not mind somebody having a joke at his expense.

The same May was completely in awe of him, however.

He used to share a room with Cantona and felt like he was in the company of the king.

May was frightened of snoring and felt it was rude to keep the light on when the king decided it was time to sleep.

If Cantona wanted to sleep at eight, then May slept at eight without any complaints.

We all respected Cantona because of his ability as a footballer. He was probably the best in England at the time, with an aura that only grew over the years.

When he had finished his ban for the kung fu kick at a fan in 1995, he was one of the most famous men in the country.

That meant opponents afforded him more respect in England, an extra yard that allowed him space to exploit.

He did not get the same respect in Europe and was less effective.

Everyone was very fond of Cantona and happy for him to be the club captain, a role he took on with enthusiasm when it came to organising social events.

We used to have a team get together when things were not running smoothly and heads needed to be banged together.

Cantona would be the first one there.

If there was a dress code then he ignored it. At one club function we all turned up dressed like penguins in suits. Eric arrived in a cream jacket with red trainers.

We thought Sir Alex Ferguson, the manager, would go crazy at him. Instead he told him that he looked wonderful.

One rule for us, one for Eric! Nobody objected.

Nobody shouted at Cantona on the field either. We let him work his magic and it was a privilege to play with him. Nobody, that is, except for Roy Keane.

I think Keane decided he'd had enough of the reverence and he would treat Cantona the same as he treated everyone else - by moaning at them if they gave the ball away.

On the rare occasion that Cantona misplaced the ball, he had Keane shouting down his ear. He didn't seem to mind because it showed Keane's absolute will to win.

Cantona had a reputation for losing his temper and we had all seen the television images where he clashed with officials, opponents and fans, but I only saw him lose his temper with a teammate once.

Peter Schmeichel, our goalkeeper, slid into him in training. Cantona was not happy, lofted up his 6ft 2ins, barrel-chested frame and pointed his index finger at the big Dane. "You!" he said. "Why always you? Why? Why?"

Schmeichel did not reply. He would not normally shirk confrontation, but I think he decided that he would not slide in on Cantona again.

Cantona may not become French president, but he has got people talking about an issue close to his heart.

I have no idea what he will do next and I expect the unexpected.

It seems to be that he is enjoying life, whether it's playing beach soccer or acting, working for the New York Cosmos or causing a stir in French politics.

I don't think you can knock anyone for that.
