Football Association ban managers from commenting on referees before games
Football managers will be banned from making comments about a referee before a match under rule changes announced by the Football Association on Tuesday.

Any manager who makes derogatory remarks about a match official before a game will face disciplinary action. The FA will also toughen up on the harassment of match officials by players.

In relation to comments about referees, the FA said in a statement: "Clubs are being advised that any media comments by managers, players or any other club officials relating to appointed match officials prior to a fixture will no longer be allowed - such pre-match comments will be deemed improper and dealt with accordingly.

"Post-match comments in relation to match officials and incidents are still permitted provided they are not personal in their nature, imply bias or attack the integrity of the officials in charge of the match, or in any other respect bring the game into disrepute."

Last season, Everton manager David Moyes questioned Mike Riley's appointment as referee for the FA Cup semi-final with Manchester United, saying it had been suggested to him that the official was a United supporter.

After the game, United manager Sir Alex Ferguson said Moyes' remarks may have influenced Riley in a crucial decision when Danny Welbeck appeared to have been fouled in the area by Phil Jagielka. No spot-kick was awarded, and Everton went on to win a penalty shoot-out.

Riley has since been appointed as the new Premier League referees' chief.

Under other rule changes, clubs can now be charged if three or more players surround the referee in a "confrontational manner". Previously the charge required officials to report "harassment or intimidation" by three or more players.

Managers and coaches who are reported for misconduct in the technical area will now be subject to a fast-track disciplinary system taking three or four weeks - much quicker than previously when such cases could drag on for months.

Musim 2009-2010 masih blom bergulir, kurang dikit lagi aja (3 mingguan lagi) but rasanya asyik aja klo dah ngomongin Big 4 ..., secara sapa-sapa wakil Inggris yang akan tampil di Champion League musim berikutnya lagi, apakah masih akan tetep sama seperti tahun-tahun sebelumnya (Man United, Liverpool, Chelsea 'n Arsenal) ataukah akan ada perubahan peta kekuatan.

kalo menyimak setahun lalu, pada awal musim 2008-2009, banyak prediksi2x yang menjagokan, City, Spurs, Villa atau pun Everton mampu untuk menyodok ke 4 besar, tapi kenyataannya malahan Spurs sempat berkutat di zona degradasi sampai dengan setengah musim berjalan sampai akhirnya mampu finish di urutan 8. Rival sekota United, City yang bergelimang poundsterling pun hanya mampu beraksi di awal musim dan mengakhiri kompetisi di posisi 10. Everton (5) dan Villa (6) yang sepertinya akan mampu berbicara lebih, seperti kehabisan bensin dan mengalami inkonsistensi di akhir2x musim, sehingga gagal menggeser Arsenal yang bertahan di posisi 4.

nah bagaimana dengan musim mendatang ini ... :gila :gila

LONDON - Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger expects big-spending Manchester City and much-improved Aston Villa to turn the Premier League's established big four into a Big Six this season.

However, the Frenchman warned it will not be easy for City, like Spanish giants Real Madrid, to turn their newly-recruited group of superstars into a balanced team.

"City look like they have made some great signings and have a high-quality squad, but it can take teams three months or more to find the right balance and to click," Wenger, who lost striker Emmanuel Adebayor and defender Kolo Toure to Abu Dhabi-owned City last month," told reporters on Thursday.

"Don't forget that Real Madrid finished second last season and have already a very strong squad - they are not rising from 10th like City will have to. And history is on the side of Real Madrid as well.

"But I think City will be there and be strong and remember that Aston Villa were challenging for the title (last season) until they faded in the last 12 games.

"When I arrived, Newcastle were there, at the top, and then it was Leeds," he said. "So I think the top four is not something that is set forever."

Speaking at the launch of Arsenal's charity partnership with the world-famous Great Ormond Street children's hospital, Wenger maintained he was confident that his team would again challenge for all the major honours.

He also had a slight dig at Arsenal fans who have become restless at a lack of silverware.

Asked what would be an acceptable level of success for the season, he said: "To win the league championship and to win the Champions League - anything else is a disaster - according to our fans!"

Wenger said his team were over-criticised last season for failing to win a trophy and only reaching the semi-finals of the FA Cup and the Champions League, losing to Chelsea and Manchester United respectively.

"I do not think it was a disastrous season," said Wenger whose side finished fourth in the Premier League and will find out on Friday who they must face to qualify for the Champions League group stage.

"We had a long unbeaten run, we played our football and we had no blips."

Asked about a comment by Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson in which he did not mention Arsenal when talking of title rivals, he said: "Football is not as predictable or scientific as some people think and sometimes people are wrong in what they say."

Wenger is interested in adding one defender and one forward to his squad, at the right price, before the transfer window closes at the end of August.

"Don't forget that most of the business is done between August 26 and 31, at midnight," he said.

London - Pekan pertama Premier League akan didedikasikan untuk almarhum Sir Bobby Robson. Setiap laga di pekan pertama akan dimulai dengan mengheningkan cipta selama satu menit untuknya.

Robson tutup usia pada 31 Juli 2009 silam setelah bertahun-tahun berjuang melawan kanker. Pria yang pernah menukangi timnas Inggris itu wafat dalam usia 76 tahun.

Mengingat dirinya adalah sosok legendaris untuk sepak bola Inggris, penghormatan pun diberikan untuknya. Pekan pertama Liga Inggris yang akan dimulai pada 15 Agustus akan diawali dengan mengheningkan cipta untuknya.

"Bobby Robson telah memberikan banyak kontribusi untuk permainan ini selama karir panjangnya nan sukses," ujar Chairman Premier League Dave Richards di Reuters.

"Dengan demikian, layaklah semua fans di seluruh negeri mengenang hidupnya, dan kontribusi besarnya untuk sepak bola, dengan memberikan aplaus selama satu menit di semua laga pada pekan pertama," lanjutnya.

Selain di Premiership, aksi serupa juga akan dilakukan di Football League--divisi yang berada satu tingkat di bawah Premiership.

Selama berkarir di dunia kepelatihan, Sir Bobby telah banyak membesut tim-tim besar. Selain timnas Inggris, ia juga pernah melatih Barcelona, FC Porto, PSV Eindhoven, dan Newcastle United.

musim lalu mereka dijalur yg benar, 3/4 musim berada di big four tp justru kpleset sendiri, UEFA cup terpaks dilepas krn Arsenal nguber dibelakang, skuad The Villans belum dalem, kalo mau tembus big five lagi harus persiapin tim 1 lagi. Mereka hanya bagus 11 orang aja. 11 orang belum cukup melakoni 38 game semusim

Soal Premiership, Telkom Belum Pasti

Jakarta - Telkom sempat menyatakan keinginan untuk menyiarkan Liga Inggris musim 2009/2010. Meski sudah mengajukan penawaran, kepastian tayangan tersebut muncul belum bisa dipastikan.

"Kita belum berada di tahap yang lebih jauh (terkait upaya mendapat hak siar Liga Inggris). Kami masih fokus pada program bundling dengan YesTV. Masih ada beberapa pertimbangan lain yang sedang kami pikirkan," ungkap jurubicara Telkomvison, Eddy Kurnia, saat dihubungi detiksport.

Telkom, seperti diutarakan Eddy Kurnia, justru tengah mempertimbangkan untuk mengambil siaran langsung kompetisi negara lain. Salah satu hal yang membuat Telkom seakan berpikir ulang untuk menyiarkan Premier League adalah adanya stasiun televisi terestrial yang juga menyiarkan aksi Wyne Rooney cs, apalagi harga siaran Liga Inggris sangatlah mahal.

"Saat ini kami belum sampai pada keputusan. Salah satu pertimbangan adalah hitung-hitungan bisnis. Persaingan dengan televisi free to air membutuhkan perhitungan yang masak, di Indonesia untuk menjadi eksklusif tidak mudah. Tentunya kami harus lebih dulu fokus pada kepuasan konsumen," sambung Eddy.

Saat ditanya soal pesaing yang dihadapi Telkom untuk mendapatkan hak siar tersebut, Eddy mengaku tak tahu. Yang jelas pihaknya tak juga bisa memastikan apakah masih akan menyiarkan Liga Italia, kompetisi yang musim lalu menjadi salah satu andalan tayangan olahraga.

"Semua masih dijajaki. Proses pembelian terhadap sebuah acara ketat sekali. Soal pesaing saya juga tidak tahu," pungkas Eddy.

Musim depan Liga Inggris memang akan disiarkan melalui televisi teristrial yakni di TvOne. Mereka musim depan rencananya akan menayangkan 58 pertandingan live. Sementara untuk laga tunda jumlahnya berkisar antara delapan atau 10.

MANCHESTER - Kompetisi Premier League mungkin bakal kian kompetitif. Meski begitu, pelatih Manchester United Sir Alex Ferguson menegaskan, sulit untuk klub-klub lain mendobrak dominasi empat klub teratas: United, Liverpool, Chelsea, dan Arsenal.

Antusiasme menyambut musim baru Premier League mulai terdengar. 15 Agustus mendatang, liga Eropa paling populer itu bakal menggulirkan musim baru. Ferguson pun tidak ingin ketinggalan turut serta dalam hiruk-pikuk menjelang laga perdana nanti.

Pelatih asal Skotlandia itu rupanya tidak merasakan ancaman besar dari klub-klub papan tengah yang mengincar mahkota juara. Tidak juga dari Manchester City yang sukses melabuhkan beberapa pemain papan atas pada bursa transfer musim panas.

"Sulit untuk tim manapun menembus empat posisi teratas mengingat konsistensi dan kualitas tim-tim (big four) itu," cetus Fergie kepada Sky Sports News, Minggu (9/8/2009).

"Dalam beberapa tahun terakhir, tim-tim itu telah ambil bagian dalam semifinal dan final Liga Champions. Itu menunjukkan konsistensi dan performa tingkat atas," imbuhnya.

Lebih lanjut, Fergie pun masih optimis dengan popularitas Premier League sebagai liga yang paling digemari para pecinta sepakbola. Kendati La Liga kini memiliki pemain-pemain papan atas seperti Cristiano Ronaldo, Ricardo Kaka, dan Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Fergie yakin Premier League masih dominan.

"Saya pikir semua orang di Eropa menyadari bahwa liga di Inggris sangat ketat, meski sejumlah orang membicarakan mengenai Real Madrid dan Barcelona yang akan kembali mendominasi. Saya ragu akan hal itu," tandasnya.

Sir Alex Ferguson believes that, for all the money Manchester City have spent, the top four are likely to remain unchanged this season.

He feels his Manchester United side, Liverpool, Chelsea and Arsenal will again be fighting it out at the top of the table in the new Premier League campaign.

Ferguson, who is preparing to face Chelsea in the Community Shield at Wembley on Sunday, said: "It is difficult for any side to break into the top four with the consistency and the quality of the teams.

"Over the last few years those teams have competed for the semifinals and finals of European Cups. It is great consistency and a great level of performance.

"I think everyone in Europe recognises the league in England is strong, although some people are talking about Real Madrid and Barcelona starting to dominate again. I have my doubts about that."

City have raised the bar in the transfer market by buying Kolo Toure, Emmanuel Adebayor, Carlos Tevez, Roque Santa Cruz and Gareth Barry.

Ferguson added: "Ourselves, Liverpool, Chelsea, Arsenal are looking at what is happening there with great interest in how it will pan out.

"You look at the money that has been spent - every week City are on the back pages.

"None of us have gone into the market in a big way. In fact we sold players. It has been really quiet with the big four."

Empat Besar, Masihkah Abadi atau Berganti?

London - Pembicaraan seputar Liga Primer Inggris hampir selalu tidak jauh dari tim empat besar. Untuk musim depan, masihkah susunan The Big Four tetap seperti waktu-waktu sebelumnya atau justru berganti?

Manchester United, Liverpool, Chelsea, dan Arsenal. Empat tim tersebut mendapatkan status sebagai The Big Four . Status itu diberikan usai mereka merajai Liga Inggris dalam beberapa tahun terakhir ini.

Mulai musim 2005/06, dominasi Empat Besar semakin terasa. The Red Devils, The Reds, The Blues, dan The Gunners itu menjadi langganan pengisi klasemen akhir kompetisi urutan pertama hingga keempat.

Bagaimana dengan musim depan? "Saya tidak pernah berpikir bahwa empat besar akan berlangsung selamanya," demikian dikatakan manajer Arsenal Arsene Wenger seperti dikutip dari situs resmi klub.

Musim lalu, perjalanan Arsenal untuk mengamankan diri di empat besar sempat mendapat ganjalan dari klub "outsider" bernama Aston Villa. Wenger mengakui bahwa terpelesetnya Villa memasuki pertengahan paruh kedua, "menolong" The Gunners kembali ke posisinya.

Berbekal pengalaman itu, Villa tentu sudah memetik pelajaran dan bisa lebih matang pada musim ini.

Kekuatan lain yang harus diwaspadai adalah Manchester City. Berbekal uang berlimpah, City mendatangkan banyak mendatangkan pemain bintang. Roque Santa Cruz, Gareth Barry, Carlos Tevez, Emmanuel Adebayor, dan Kolo Toure didatangkan melengkapi Robinho yang bergabung pada musim lalu.

Sementara itu, belanja tim Empat Besar tidak terlalu jor-joran seperti City. Belum ada pemain 'wah' yang diboyong keempat raksasa itu.

MU mendatangkan Gabriel Obertan, Michael Owen, dan Antonio Valencia dengan harga tak sampai 20 juta poundsterling atau hanya 25 persen dari penjualan Cristiano Ronaldo. Manajer Sir Alex Ferguson bahkan menyatakan kegiatan belanja MU sudah selesai.

Sementara Arsenal meski memiliki dana sekitar 41 juta poundsterling hasil penjualan Adebayor dan Toure, masih belum bergerak aktif di bursa transfer. Bahkan Wenger masih pikir-pikir untuk memboyong Maoruane Chamakh, karena menilai harga yang diminta Bordeaux yang 'cuma' 12 juta poundsterling dinilai terlalu mahal.

Liverpool baru saja melepas pemain andalannya Xabi Alonso, Alvaro Arbeloa, dan Sami Hyypia. The Reds merekrut Alberto Aquilani dan Glen Johnson. Tim yang bermarkas di Anfield itu diberitakan masih mengincar pemain yang berharga 'hanya' sekitar 12 juta poundsterling yakni Michael Turner (Hull City) atau Ryan Shawcross (Stoke City).

Sedangkan Chelsea mendatangkan kiper Ross Turnbull, gelandang Youri Zhirkov dan striker muda Daniel Sturridge. Manajer Carlo Ancelotti juga mengatakan kegiatan The Blues di bursa transfer sudah rampung .

Kehati-hatian The Big Four dalam berbelanja tercermin dari komentar Rafael Benitez. "Kami akan bekerja keras dengan pemain dan uang yang kami miliki. Kami siap untuk mendatangkan pemain, namun itu semua bergantung kepada harganya," ujar manajer Liverpool itu seperti dikutip dari Skysports.

"Yang jelas akan sulit untuk berkompetisi di Liga Primer dengan tim-tim yang punya uang lebih banyak dibanding kami," lanjut manajer asal Spanyol itu.

Pemain Sepakbola Dihukum karena Fans Khayalan

Sunderland - Grant Leadbitter yang bermain untuk Sunderland dibawa ke meja hijau karena kedapatan ngebut. Untuk hal itu, dia beralibi ketakutan karena mengira dikejar fans tim lawan.

Pada sebuah malam, Leadbitter melewati Tyne Bridge yang ada di Timur Laut Inggris. Saat itulah dia tiba-tiba dicekam rasa takut karena merasa diikuti fans pemain Newcastle United yang hendak mencari gara-gara.

Alhasil, ketika mencapai pertigaan terdekat si pemain sepakbola langsung menekan keras-keras pedal gas mobil BMW M6 merah yang dinaikinya untuk meninggalkan "para pengejarnya".

"Hatiku berdegup kencang, aku ketakutan dan aku ingin segera pulang," tutur Leadbitter di pengadilan, seperti dikutip Guardian.

Ketika sedang mendadak ngebut itulah Leadbitter ternyata malah melewati seorang opsir polisi wanita, Sersan Lynee McKevitt. Merasa gaya mengemudinya serampangan, McKevitt pun mengejar dan malah bikin Leadbitter semakin panik.

"Saya akan menyebut gaya mengendaranya sebagai agresif. Dia secara mendadak ngebut dan mengerem dengan kasar," terang McKevitt.

Kecepatan Leadbitter sendiri saat itu tercatat sampai dengan 180 km/jam, kendati dia menunjukkan sikap yang baik dan meminta maaf ketika akhirnya bisa ditepikan oleh si polisi.

Hakim Roger Elsey bersimpati kepada si pemain sepakbola. Elsey percaya bahwa Leadbitter memang cukup terpukul setelah insiden tersebut. Namun, dia tetap menyalahkan Leadbitter yang malah kian ngebut dan tidak menyadari yang ada di belakangnya adalah polisi.

Untuk itu Leadbitter dijatuhi denda total 515 poundsterling (Rp 8,4 juta), plus hukuman tak boleh mengemudi selama 14 hari. Semoga saja semasa belum bisa mengemudi lagi, Leadbitter tidak dikejar fans tim lawan sungguhan.

Banyak penyerang hebat beredar di Liga Inggris. Fernando Torres, yang akan melakoni musim ketiganya di Premier League, dijagokan sebagai pencetak gol tersubur di kompetisi musim 2009/2010.

Hal itu dapat dilihat dari mayoritas bursa taruhan, yang menempatkan striker klub Liverpool itu di urutan teratas bursa top skorer. Dua rumah judi terbesar di Inggris, William Hill dan Ladbrokes, termasuk yang mengunggulkan 'El Nino'.

Di musim debutnya di Inggris Torres langsung mendulang 24 gol, terpaut tujuh dari top skorer Cristiano Ronaldo. Di musim lalu pemain internasional Spanyol itu hanya mengemas 14 gol, antara lain karena cukup sering cedera.

Dua penyerang Chelsea, Nicolas Anelka dan Didier Drogba, ditempatkan di jajaran atas calon top skorer musim ini. Itu berarti fans menaruh ekspektasi supaya pelatih Carlo Ancelotti sering menduetkan kedua pemain tersebut. Anelka adalah top skorer musim lalu dengan koleksi 19 gol.

Yang cukup mengejutkan adalah adanya prediksi Michael Owen bersinar kembali. Penyerang rawan cedera ini akan memulai petualangannya sebagai anggota Manchester United, setelah tim lamanya, Newcastle United, terdegradasi.

Walaupun belum ada jaminan bakal jadi starter reguler, tapi para petaruh berani menempatkannya bahkan di atas Wayne Rooney dan Dimitar Berbatov sebagai calon top skorer ("Setan Merah").

Beberapa striker beken lain yang jadi unggulan di antaranya Robin van Persie dan Andriy Arshavin (Arsenal), Emmanuel Adebayor, Robinho, dan Carlos Tevez (Manchester City), serta Jermain Defoe (Tottenham Hotspur).

Dari kalangan pemain non-penyerang, Steven Gerrard (Liverpool), Frank Lampard (Chelsea), dan Robinho (Manchester City), termasuk yang diperhitungkan dengan serius untuk bisa menjadi top skorer.

Gerrard misalnya, musim lalu menorehkan 16 gol di Premiership, dari total 24 gol di semua kompetisi. Di periode yang sama Lampard mengukir 12 gol, sedangkan Robinho 14 gol. Nama terakhir diperkirakan akan lebih sering dimainkan sebagai gelandang serang karena City punya banyak penyerang lain seperti Tevez, Adebayor dan Craig Bellamy.

Birmingham have signed O’Shea!

Young Irish winger James, that is. The 21-year-old arrived at St Andrews earlier this week. I don’t think he’ll play here on Sunday but I like the idea of O’Shea marking O’Shea. It’s a bit like when Valencia played Valencia… or when Everton came to OT and Neville captained both teams. Sorry, I'm easily amused... :amazed::hammer::hammer: =)) =))

O'SHEA'S BLUES CHALLENGE

New signing James O'Shea can't wait for his Blues adventure to begin.

The Republic of Ireland Under 21 star put pen-to-paper on a two-year deal, with the option of a further two years, earlier this afternoon at St. Andrew's.

The midfielder is already familiar to Blues boss Alex McLeish after being invited for trial in January.

And O'Shea is relishing the challenge that lies ahead.

"I am really excited to be here," he exclusively told bcfc.com.

"I was on trial in January and it didn't work out but thankfully the manager came back for me and I am delighted to be here.

"In January I was so disappointed not to get the move to England but now it's great and I can't wait for the challenge.

Google menempatkannya dalam bentuk satu tim yang tentu saja berisi 11 pemain. Dari tim Google Premier League XI, berisi para pemain yang kebanyakan meramaikan bursa transfer musim panas ini. Baik lewat gosip, spekulasi maupun transfer yang benar-benar terjadi.

Kejutan terjadi di bawah mistar gawang yang menempatkan David James, kiper Portsmouth. Mantan kiper timnas Inggris ini paling banyak dicari karena rutin menulis kolom di beberapa media di Inggris Raya. Hebatnya, James satu-satunya pemain dari tim bukan anggota Bigfour.

Steven Gerrard menyusul di belakang James. Ini karena pengaruh Gerrard sebagai ikon Liverpool yang sampai saat ini masih tak terbantahkan.

Jakarta - Satu lagi stasiun TV yang akhirnya menyiarkan siaran Liga Inggris di Indonesia. Setelah TV One, kini giliran televisi berbayar Indovision yang menyiarkan salah satu liga terakbar Eropa itu.

Sebelumnya siaran Premier League di televisi berbayar menghilang setelah Aora TV memutuskan berhenti menyiarkannya. Sementara TelkomVision/Yes TV yang juga menyatakan tertarik untuk mendapatkan hak siar asih belum juga sampai pada keputusan karena masih melakukan perhitungan.

Minggu (16/8/2009) malam WIB, Indovision melalui channel ESPN menayangkan secara langsung pertandingan antara Tottenham Hotspur melawan Liverpool. Tentunya hal ini cukup mengejutkan karena sebelumnya tak ada pengumuman dari Indovision mereka bakal menyiarkan Premiership musim ini.

Corporate Secretary Indovision Aria Mahendra juga tak mau berkomentar banyak soal ini. Menurutnya, pihak ESPN lebih layak untuk mengeluarkan komentar soal ini. Namun ia mengakui bahwa pihak Indovision telah mengetahui bahwa siaran Premiership ada dalam layanan mereka.

"Ini harusnya pihak ESPN yang memberikan statemen. Kalau soal (tayang di Indovision), itu ya memang sudah," ujarnya ketika dihubungi detiksport.

Sebelum ini, hanya TvOne yang menjadi televisi yang menyiarkan Premier League musim ini. Mereka pun mengklaim memiliki paket lebih baik dari musim lalu, sehingga akan lebih sering menayangkan pertandingan yang melibatkan tim tim besar.

THEO WALCOTT is the Prem's answer to sprint superstar Usain Bolt.

Manchester United fan Bolt hit a top speed of 24.04mph as he won two golds at the World Championships in Berlin.

Arsenal's Walcott clocked 22.72mph and Sol Campbell took a shock second place in the Premier League race with a 22.50mph top speed.

The top speeds have been calculated by Castrol using data captured over two seasons.

Didier Drogba and Fernando Torres would be in a photo finish for third with their joint top speed of 22.27mph.

Football's fliers hit incredible speeds and Walcott's bursts mean he would run 9.9secs for 100m - if he could sustain his top speed of 10.1m per second.

Double Olympic champ Bolt ran 9.58secs to break the 100m world record in Berlin.

Campbell's top speed could see him run 10.1secs for 100m - just a tenth of a second slower than Brit Dwain Chambers ran at the World Championships.

Bolt admits his preparations ahead of his 19.19secs 200m record had been blighted by United's loss to Burnley.

But he said: "They will bounce back and there'll be no worries."

Ditusuk, Bek West Ham Terancam Diamputasi

London - Karir pemain belakang West Ham United Calum Davenport terancam berakhir dini. Kaki pemain berusia 26 tahun itu terancam diamputasi akibat ditusuk oleh penjahat.

Kejadian tersebut berlangsung di luar rumah Davenport di Springfield Avenue, Bedford, Sabtu (22/8/2009) pagi waktu setempat. Davenport yang sedang bersama ibunya, Kim (49 tahun), ditusuk beberapa kali di kedua kakinya.

Tusukan bertubi-tubi itu menyobek arteri utama di kaki kiri Davenport. Ia pun segera dilarikan ke Rumah Sakit dan dokter berjuang menyelamatkan nyawanya karena ia kehilangan banyak darah.

Meski selamat, masih ada kemungkinan Davenport harus merelakan kaki kirinya diamputasi. Tempo 24-48 jam ke depan akan sangat krusial bagi mantan punggawa timnas Inggris U-21 itu.

Situs Goal yang mengutip keterangan anggota keluarga Davenport mengabarkan bahwa eks bek Coventry City dan Tottenham Hotspur itu 'mungkin tidak akan pernah bermain sepakbola lagi'.

Dua orang pria, masing-masing berusia 19 dan 25 tahun, telah ditahan polisi akibat kejadian tersebut. Khusus untuk pria yang berusia 25 tahun, tuduhan yang dikenakan padanya adalah upaya pembunuhan.

Muncul dugaan bahwa tindakan jahat itu memang ditujukan untuk menyudahi karir Davenport. Beberapa waktu sebelumnya, Davenport dilaporkan terlibat dalam persoalan di dalam keluarganya.

Saat ini, Davenport masih dirawat di RS dengan penjagaan ketat. Ibu Davenport juga dirawat dengan luka serius di bagian perut.

Cedera itu didapat Modric saat membela Spurs menghadapi Birmingham City, Sabtu (29/8/2009). Saat itu, terlibat dalam tabrakan keras dengan Lee Bowyer dan harus ditarik keluar.

"Rasanya seperti seluruh dunia saya runtuh karena saya akan absen setidaknya selama enam pekan. Saya sangat sedih," sesal Modric kepada harian Kroasia Jutarnji List yang dikutip Reuters.

"Itu bukan tekel yang sangat keras tetapi itu sangat menyakitkan dan saya sudah tahu ada sesuatu yang salah saat peristiwa itu terjadi," imbuh gelandang berusia 23 tahun itu.

Tottenham Hotspur pair Jermain Defoe and Harry Redknapp have been rewarded for notching four wins out of four to open their Barclays Premier League campaign by being named the Barclays Player and Manager of the Month for August.

Spurs began the season in fine style, defeating Liverpool at White Hart Lane thanks to a Benoit Assou-Ekotto thunderbolt and Sebastien Bassong’s second-half winner.

This was followed by a Jermain Defoe masterclass away at Hull City, where the England forward’s hat-trick was the highlight of a comprehensive 5-1 triumph.

Defoe’s scoring form continued as he grabbed the equaliser in the next game, away at West Ham United, with Redknapp’s side coming from behind to win courtesy of Aaron Lennon’s late winner.

The North London club preserved their 100 percent record in August in dramatic fashion, as a last-gasp Lennon winner saw off newly promoted Birmingham City 2-1.

Peter Crouch’s opener was cancelled out by a close-range Lee Bowyer effort before the diminutive winger’s late clincher.

LONDON, KOMPAS.com - Premier League membuat gebrakan tegas. Mulai musim depan, mereka akan membatasi pemain nonbinaan klubnya sendiri hanya 17 orang saja. Ini dimaksudkan agar pemain binaan klub bisa berkembang dan punya kesempatan berkompetisi.

Premier League memang paling didominasi pemain luar, atau bukan binaan klubnya. Bahkan, Arsenal sering tampil dengan semua pemain dari luar negeri. Ini dinilai merugikan perkembangan pemain lokal.

Sebelumnya, FIFA dan UEFA juga akan menerapkan pembatasan pemain asing dalam format 6-5. Setiap pertandingan, pemain lokal harus minimal 6 orang dan pemain asing maksimal 5 orang. Namun, ide itu ditentang Uni Eropa, karena bertentangan dengan UU ketenagakerjaan kawasan itu.

Namun, Premier League punya ide sendiri dan akan diterapkan musim depan. Setiap klub minimal harus memiliki delapan pemain binaan sendiri. Sedangkan pemain asing atau nonbinaan sendiri maksimal 17 orang.

Aturan ini tak mendiskriminasi kebangsaan pemain. Artinya, pemain binaan itu bisa dari pemain lokal maupun pemain muda dari negara lain.

Ketua Premier League, Richard Scudamore mengatakan, "Ini memberi ruang promosi buat pemain-pemain muda. Kami akan tegas soal ini. Tapi, kami tak membedakan kewarganegaraan." (AP)

Ide yang sangat bagus... tapi sebelumnya musti ditegaskan juga pengertian "pemaen binaan" itu. Apa syarat-syarat pemaen dapat dibilang "pemaen binaan".

Trus FIFA dan UEFA harus segera mempertegas aturan tentang larangan jual-beli pemaen muda usia kurang dari 18 tahun. dengan aturan yang rencananya akan Premier Laegue terapkan itu menurutku berpotensi akan makin banyak bocah-bocah (baik asli inggris ataupun non-inggris) yang diperebutkan klub-klub BPL untuk dimasukkan ke akademi mereka masing-masing agar nantinya dapat diklaim sebagai pemaen binaan. klo itu yang terjadi plus blom ada aturan tegas tentang larangan transfer pemaen muda nggak tertutup kemungkinan akan banyak Kakuta-Kakuta lainnya...

Dengan aturan "pemaen binaan" ini aku yakin klub-klub BPL mau nggak mau bakalan meningkatkan kualitas akademi dan perekrutan pemaen asli inggris karena mereka nggak bisa lagi (susah) impor pemaen muda dari luar yang sering kali bermasalah.

London - FA segera menentukan nasib striker Manchester City Emmanuel Adebayor atas insiden yang ia terjadi akhir pekan lalu. Bila diputus bersalah, Adebayor terancam skorsing minimal tiga pertandingan.

Seperti diberitakan Eurosport, FA akan memutuskan nasib Adebayor pada hari Selasa (15/9/2009) petang waktu setempat.

Ada dua tuduhan yang diberikan kepada striker asal Togo itu yakni perayaan gol yang berbau provokatif dan menginjak Robin Van Persie dalam laga antara Manchester City kontra Arsenal, akhir pekan lalu.

Untuk gol yang berbau provokatif, wasit Mark Clattenburg memberinya peringatan. Namun, ketika terjadi insiden dengan Van Persie, wasit tidak memperingatkan Adebayor.

Bila FA memvonis striker bernomor punggung 25 itu bersalah dalam kasus Van Persie, maka ia terancam absen dalam tiga laga, salah satunya adalah melawan Manchester United akhir pekan ini. Hukuman bagi Adebayor bakal semakin berat bila selebrasi gol-nya juga dinilai sebagai sebuah kesalahan.

Sebelumnya Adebayor sudah meminta maaf atas perayaan gol tersebut. Kapten Manchester City, Kolo Toure , menyebut tindakan rekannya itu merupakan upaya untuk menjaga harga diri.

London - Penyerang Manchester City Emmanuel Adebayor dituntut atas tuduhan melakukan kekerasan dan tindakan yang tidak pantas kala timnya bersua Arsenal, yang notabene merupakan bekas klub pemain asal Togo itu.

Demikian pernyataan yang dikeluarkan oleh Asosiasi Sepakbola Inggris (FA). Sebelumnya dia diduga sudah menginjak pemain lawan dan melakukan selebrasi gol yang berbau provokatif dalam laga antara City kontra Arsenal akhir pekan lalu.

"Adebayor dituntut atas tuduhan melakukan kekerasan menyusul insiden dengan Robin van Persie yang mengakibatkan pemain Arsenal itu mendapat cedera di bagian wajah," terang FA seperti dilansir Reuters.

"Adebayor juga mendapat tuntutan atas tindakan yang tidak sepantasnya menyusul sikapnya ketika berbalik dan berlari di depan pendukung Arsenal untuk merayakan gol yang baru dia buat," lanjut pernyataan tersebut.

Pihak FA menambahkan bahwa wasit Mark Clattenburg yang memimpin pertandingan tidak melihat langsung tindakan Adebayor terhadap Van Persie. "Tapi dia mengonfirmasi bahwa jika dia melihatnya, maka dia pasti mengusir Adebayor atas tindakan kekerasan."

Pihak kepolisian Manchester juga sudah memberikan masukan tertulis kepada FA mengenai pandangan mereka terhadap insiden di stadion City of Manchester itu. Tanggal terpisah nantinya akan diatur untuk sebuah komisi menelaah selebrasi gol Adebayor.

Selebrasi gol Adebayor itu sendiri lantas memicu kericuhan di antara fans Arsenal yang mengakibatkan seorang steward cedera. Dalam hal ini FA juga meminta City dan kepolisian Manchester segera mengidentifikasi pelaku yang terlibat dalam aksi kekerasan itu.

"FA ingin melihat siapa pun yang bersalah atas tindakan itu menghadapi hukuman sesuai sistem yang berlaku dan dijauhkan dari sepakbola," demikian FA.

Adebayor diberi waktu sampai Rabu (16/9/2009) malam waktu setempat untuk memberi respon atas tuntutan melakukan kekerasan yang bisa berbuah ganjaran larangan main tiga partai. Untuk tuntutan tindakan tak pantas, dia diberi tenggat sampai 30 September untuk merespon.

Liverpool - Everton menambah armada barunya di lini belakang, setelah berhasil menggaet bek yang juga kapten timnas Australia, Lucas Neill, dengan status free transfer.

Seperti dilansir dari situs resmi The Toffees, Neill yang belum mendapatkan klub usai kontraknya dengan West Ham United habis musim lalu, akan diikat dengan kontrak berdurasi satu musim.

Bagi Neill, Everton adalah klub ketiganya di kancah Liga Primer. Blackburn Rovers jadi klub pertamanya tahun 2001 dan setelah menghabiskan enam musim di Ewood Park dengan 188 penampilan dan lima gol, ia pun memutuskan hijrah ke West Ham musim panas 2007.

Selama berkostum The Hammers, Neill tampil sebanyak 79 kali dan menyumbang hanya satu gol. Sebenarnya manajemen West Ham berniat memperpanjang kontrak pemain usia 31 tahun itu, namun Neill menolaknya.

LONDON, KOMPAS.com - Pemilik baru Portsmouth, Sulaiman al-Fahim, mulai mengancam klub-klub besar Liga Inggris. Al-Fahim ingin menjiplak pengembangan klub seperti di Arsenal atau Barcelona.

"The Pompey" saat ini masih menjadi klub pesakitan di Premier League karena selalu kalah dalam enam laga yang mereka mainkan. Mereka kini menghuni dasar klasemen sementara.

Hal itu tak membuat Al-Fahim putus asa untuk membangun timnya menjadi calon klub kuat di Liga Inggris. Ia siap mengeluarkan banyak uang untuk menjamin kesuksesan timnya di masa datang.

"Kami tidak buru-buru mengontrak pemain bintang dan kami tidak ingin masuk bursa transfer sekarang. Kami mungkin mulai mengontrak pemain musim panas mendatang," kata Al-Fahim.

"Arsenal merupakan contoh klub bagi saya. Filosofi mereka adalah mengontrak pemain muda sehingga mereka dapat bertumbuh bersama dalam klub dan itu ideal. Barcelona juga contoh sempurna. Mereka mengontrak Lionel Messi pada usia 13 tahun dan membangunnya dari awal," tambahnya.

Al-Fahim resmi menjadi pemilik "The Pompey" setelah ia mengambil alih saham dari pemilik sebelumnya, Alexandre Gaydamak, pada Agustus 2009. Pembelian itu mendatangkan harapan baru bagi penggemar Portsmouth karena mereka ingin klub tersebut kaya dan siap mendobrak kemapanan Liga Inggris seperti dilakukan oleh Manchester City. Gunners boss wary of new rules

Arsene Wenger fears it will be "impossible" to continue his youth policy at Arsenal if new rules regarding home-grown players are implemented.

During his time in charge of the Gunners, Wenger has made bringing through gifted youngsters from both home and abroad his priority, but he feels his plans for the future are being threatened.

From next season, the Premier League are to introduce a ruling that eight members of a 25-man squad must be home-grown, while the Football Association also have the 90-minute-from-home regulation.

FIFA and UEFA are also keen to restrict the movement between countries of players under the age of 18, leaving Wenger concerned it will drastically alter his youth policy.

"It will make that policy virtually impossible," said Wenger. "If you cannot add any players under 18, and you have the home-grown rule, and on top of that English clubs are limited to bringing in young players who live less than 90 minutes from the training ground, how can we produce home-grown players?

"Personally, I don't know. So it's vital that this under-18 transfer rule is not implemented because English clubs would have a domestic limitation and a foreign limitation, making it harder to produce home-grown players.

"In England we accumulate disadvantages. We cannot buy [an academy player] outside our 90-minute radius.

"So already we cannot take a player from Manchester or Southampton. We cannot take a player from Asia, North or South America, Africa.

"What can we do? We can only pray that somebody next to London Colney is as gifted as Maradona and says, 'Please can I play for you'.

"We want to be the best league in the world and that is why we have to open the doors to the best players in the world.

"The first signs, with Cristiano Ronaldo and Kaka going to Spain, are not very good for us. You have to accept that the best have to play with the best."

David O'Leary has emerged as firm favourite to succeed manager Paul Hart at Portsmouth, according to informed sources on the south coast, ESPN Soccernet has been told.

Hart faces the axe if rock-bottom Pompey fail to win at home to Everton on Saturday but insists he does not fear becoming the first Premier League manager to be sacked this season despite losing his first six games.

His record of 11 defeats from 22 matches is identical to that of predecessor Tony Adams when he was fired last season. Hart stormed out of a press conference after being quizzed on his future - before what could be his final game as Portsmouth boss.

ESPN Soccernet broke the story earlier this week that the under-pressure manager had two games to save his job, the Carling Cup tie which Pompey won in midweek and now the Everton game, and that O'Leary and Glenn Hoddle would immediately leap to the top of Pompey's wanted list if Hart was sacked.

Hoddle, though, has told ESPN soccernet, that he has turned down yet another job this week, this time in Holland, to concentrate on his Academy in Spain.

A defiant Hart said: "I don't feel under pressure. Pressure from what? I want to get results, that's what I'm looking for. What have I got to fear? It's not me who is going to make decisions like that. It's not something I think about every waking hour."

Hart kept Pompey up last season but has overseen the worst start to a campaign in the club's 111-year history. Defender Younes Kaboul has scored two of Pompey's three Premier League goals.

Hart said: "We came back in pre-season with 14 players and played Benfica with eight kids. There were kids on the bench for the first few games. Then we had to do our signings 48 hours before the window closed.

"You draw your own conclusions if it's been tough or not. The team are getting used to each other and in the last two games we have shown our quality. A lot of good things have happened, we have to concentrate on them."

Former Chelsea boss Avram Grant has been appointed the new director of football at Portsmouth, the club have confirmed, after billionaire Saudi businessman Ali Al Faraj bought the club from Sulaiman Al-Fahim earlier this week.

Grant led Chelsea to a Champions League final defeat against Manchester United in 2008, but had become technical director at Fratton Park when he arrived in England in 2006, before moving on to Stamford Bridge. The Israeli's return to Portsmouth will be his first job in football since leaving Chelsea.

"I am happy to return to the best league in the world, the English league," Grant told Israeli sports website One, adding he had signed a three-year contract.

Pompey keeper David James has backed the appointment of Grant. ''I love Avram, he's a great guy,'' said James at a press conference ahead of England's World Cup qualifier in Ukraine on Saturday. ''When I first joined the club he was there and he was very active in preparation for matches. He's a very wise man; his football knowledge is immense. It's a very good move.''

James is hopeful Grant's arrival and the takeover by Al Faraj will bring some much needed stability to the club.

''The non-pay issue was not good,'' he added. ''The people who needed to get paid got paid but it was more the bigger picture. Now we've got our first win and our first clean sheet, it's a much happier place.''

The news of talks with Grant emerged as chief executive Peter Storrie moved to deny claims that Paul Hart was to be replaced as manager.

"Paul is going nowhere. He has done a tremendous job throughout and been an absolute brick," Storrie told The News. "Now people are starting to see what a shrewd manager he really is. Tactically he is getting it right and is nurturing the team. I think everyone involved in the club saw the victory against Wolves coming."

Storrie is also adamant that Grant's arrival will not impact on the job Hart is doing at Fratton Park, adding: "People can construe it how they like - the fact is he (Grant) has been brought in as a director of football and that has been made abundantly clear. He will work with Paul and do exactly the same as what he did with Harry. He will be involved in the coaching. Paul selects the team but he is missing an experienced man alongside him at the moment.''

Manchester United went back to the top of the Barclays Premier League by holding off a brave second-half fightback to beat Bolton 2-1 at Old Trafford on Saturday.

Buoyed before kick-off by news of Chelsea's 2-1 defeat at Aston Villa, the champions took the lead after only five minutes when Michael Owen's header rebounded into the net off the body of centre back Zat Knight.

Owen was also involved in the move that enabled winger Antonio Valencia to double United's lead on 33 minutes.

But United were forced to endure a nervous finale after midfielder Matthew Taylor pulled a goal back for Bolton on 75 minutes.

Chelsea manager Carlo Ancelotti admits his team have work to do on set plays after they twice conceded from corners to go down 2-1 at Villa Park.

Ancelotti's men led 1-0 thanks to Didier Drogba's 15th-minute goal but defenders Richard Dunne and James Collins replied for the home side to condemn them to a second consecutive defeat away from home.

"We lost the game because we had two set plays," Ancelotti told Sky Sports 1. "We need to be more focused on the situation.

"Chelsea played a good game and we don't want to lose the game in that situation, only if the other team play better than us. Aston Villa were very able on the set plays.

"We want to do better for sure. We need more concentration."

A rare error from Villa goalkeeper Brad Friedel had allowed Drogba to put Chelsea ahead but he atoned with a string of fine saves.

Dunne then struck for the second successive match to put his side back on level terms, heading home a 32nd-minute corner from Ashley Young.

And the winner came after 52 minutes when Collins found himself unmarked at the far post and powered his header past Petr Cech from Young's inswinging corner for his first goal for the midlands club.

Arsenal climbed to fourth place in the table thanks to a 3-1 win over Birmingham while Sunderland leapfrogged Liverpool into seventh after to a 1-0 win at the Stadium of Light.

Two goals in three minutes from Robin van Persie and Abou Diaby put the Gunners 2-0 up at the Emirates Stadium but Lee Bowyer pulled a goal back for the visitors seven minutes before the break.

Andrey Arshavin then settled fraying nerves with the winner after 84 minutes with his fifth goal of the season.

Ledley King broke the deadlock with his first goal of 2009 after 29 minutes and Defoe, one of three ex-Portsmouth players in the Spurs line-up, added a second on the stroke of half-time.

Former Spurs midfielder Kevin Prince Boateng pulled a goal back for Pompey after 59 minutes and Defoe was then shown a red card by referee Phil Dowd after reacting to a challenge from Aaron Mokoena and stamping on his opponent.

London - Premier League menjatuhkan sanksi larangan transfer kepada Portsmouth dalam batas waktu yang tidak ditentukan. Sanksi dicabut bila The Pompey telah melunasi seluruh pembayaran atas transfer pemain yang mereka lakukan.

Pengumuman larangan transfer itu disampaikan oleh otoritas Premier League Rabu (28/10/2009) malam WIB.

"Kami mengonfirmasi adanya embargo untuk Portsmouth mendaftarkan pemain-pemain baru," demikian keterangan yang disampaikan oleh juru bicara Premier League Dan Johnson, seperti dikutip dari AFP.

Sanksi ini dijatukan karena Portsmouth belum menyelesaikan masalah pembayaran transfer pemain yang mereka lakukan. Beberapa di antaranya adalah pembelian Glen Johnson dari Chelsea Agustus 2007 dan Lassana Diarra dari Arsenal Januari 2008.

The Pompey mengaku optimistis pihaknya bisa menyelesaikan permasalahan ini. "Proses pembayaran transfer yang belum lunas tengah berlangsung. Kami yakin situasi ini akan segera kembali membaik akhir pekan ini," demikian kata direktur komunikasi Gary Double.

Portsmouth menjadi klub kedua di Liga Primer yang terkena sanksi larangan transfer setelah sebelumnya Chelsea. Bedanya, sanksi untuk The Blues dijatuhkan oleh otoritas sepakbola dunia FIFA. Chelsea dikenai larangan melakukan aktifitas di dua periode transfer mendatang.

Curbs wins Hammers case

ALAN CURBISHLEY has won his case for wrongful dismissal against West Ham after claiming he had no option but to resign.

A tribunal upheld Curbishley's argument after he resigned last season following the club's decision to sell Anton Ferdinand and George McCartney to Sunderland against his wishes.

The Premier League panel, which dismissed a counter claim from West Ham, will now assess how much compensation the club will have to pay.

Curbishley said: "I am obviously delighted with this result. I very much enjoyed my time at West Ham and never wanted to leave.

"But on joining the club I insisted that my contract contained a clause confirming that I would have final say on the selection of players to be transferred to and from the club.

"The club completely ignored my contract when selling Ferdinand, and when McCartney was then sold, the club having given me assurances that no players would be leaving the club after the sale of Ferdinand, I had no alternative but to resign.

"My authority and integrity were undermined and my position was made untenable. I now wish to put this entire matter behind me."

West Ham's counter claim related to the cost of employing his successor Gianfranco Zola and his assistant Steve Clarke.

Richard Bevan, chief executive of the League Managers' Association, said the outcome demonstrated the need for clubs to honour contracts.

Bevan said: "Naturally we are delighted with the outcome for Alan but, at the same time, sorry that he wasn't able to continue at West Ham United, a club that has played such a prominent part in his professional career both as a player and manager.

"The findings of the tribunal demonstrate the critical importance of respecting contracts which need to set out the roles and responsibilities of the parties in clear and unequivocal terms."

Dutch hitman was rewarded with the Barclays accolade after scintillating month that saw the 26-year old score five goals and set up another two as the Gunners went through the month unbeaten.

Van Persie notched up his first goal in the 6-2 win over Blackburn Rovers at the Emirates Stadium, drilling a low shot beyond Paul Robinson after fine work from Cesc Fabregas.

Fulham manager Roy Hodgson has landed the Barclays Manager of the Month award for October.

Hodgson guided the Cottagers through an unbeaten month despite a tricky Barclays Premier League fixture list.

Hodgson's charges kicked off the month with a 2-2 draw at West Ham United and were only denied three points by Hammers' striker Junior Stanislas' last-gasp equaliser.

This was followed by a comfortable 2-0 win at home to Hull City before the team came back from two goals down to secure an excellent draw away at Manchester City.

Fulham completed the month with a fine 3-1 victory over Liverpool, a win that saw the club move into mid-table and away from the relegation danzer zone.

This is the third time that Roy Hodgson has won the Barclays Manager of the Month award and comes almost 12 years since he last scooped the prize in December 1997, while manager of Blackburn Rovers. He also won the award in August 1997.

Liga Inggris Tolak Rangers & Celtic

London - Wacana bergabungnya dua tim besar Skotlandia, Glasgow Rangers dan Glasgow Celtic, ke Liga Utama Inggris kembali mengemuka. Namun proposal itu langsung ditolak.

Proposal untuk menyertakan duo Glasgow yang juga sering dikenal sebagai Old Firm itu diajukan oleh Chairman Bolton Wanderers Phil Gartside. Namun proposal itu gagal mendapat dukungan minimal 14 dari 20 chairman klub.

Penolakan itu ditegaskan ulang oleh Chief Executive Premier League Richard Scudamore. Premier League mengatakan bahwa proposal itu 'tidak diinginkan dan tidak dimungkinkan'.

"Klub-klub sudah mendiskusikannya dan mereka pada dasarnya mengatakan bahwa merek lebih memilih untuk membahas hal-hal lain sebagai bagian dari pengembangan strategis. Dengan rasa hormat ke Celtic dan Rangers, ide itu tidak bisa jalan," kata Scudamore di Reuters.

Beberapa waktu lalu, ide untuk memasukkan Rangers dan Celtic ke Premier League pernah mengemuka. Liga Skotlandia dianggap sebagai 'kolam' yang terlalu kecil bagi dua 'ikan besar' itu.

"Kami telah membuat pernyataan yang jelas dan tegas, dan kita akan meninggalkan masalah itu. Tidak berarti tidak," lugas Scudamore lagi.

"Klub-klub secara sah telah memberikan suara mereka bahwa kami tidak akan membahas soal ini lagi. Celtic dan Rengers tidak akan bergabung," papar Scudamore.

Keputusan untuk tidak menerima Celtic dan Rangers disambut gembira oleh klub Liga Skotlandia.

"Dengan cara pandang yang egois, saya ingin membawa tim saya ke Ibrox (kandang Rangers) dan Parkhead (kandang Celtic). Saya ingin datang ke arena itu di depan pendukung mereka," kata manajer Hibernian, John Hughes.

"Sebagai manajer di Liga Skotlandia, saya pikir mereka adalah daya tarik utama bagi kami. Saya mengerti perasaan mereka, tapi saya senang mereka masih jadi bagian dari sepakbola Skotlandia," pungkas Hughes.

"Itu mencuatkan harapan bahwa liga akan jadi sangat kompetitif. Tapi pengalaman saya bilang bahwa hanya akan ada dua tim yang bisa terus bertahan sampai akhir musim," tegas dia.

Keyakinan Fergie berbeda saat diminta menyebutkan empat tim yang akan mengisi jatah Liga Champions musim depan. Alhasil, dia pun hanya menyebutkan nama-nama tim yang dia yakini sebagai kandidat kuat.

"Saya bisa melemparkan koin dan itu bisa menjadi peluang terbaik saya dalam menentukan siapa yang bisa mendobrak masuk ke empat besar di antara Tottenham, Aston Villa, Everton dan Manchester City. Ini adalah kompetisi yang ketat dan mereka semua mampu melakukannya," nilai Fergie.

London - Tottenham Hotspur baru saja berpesta sembilan gol ke gawang Wigan Athletic, Minggu (22/11/2009) malam WIB. Lima gol Jermain Defoe menjadikannya pemain ketiga dalam sejarah Premier League yang bisa melakukannya.

Laga melawan Wigan di White Hart Lane seperti akan berjalan biasa-biasa saja, ketika sampai babak pertama berakhir hanya satu gol yang tercipta, yaitu melalui Peter Crouch.

Namun lain ceritanya di babak kedua ketika gelontoran delapan gol ke jala Chris Kirkland, di mana lima gol Defoe ditegaskan lagi oleh Aaron Lennon, bunuh diri Kirkland dan Niko Krancjar. Wigan hanya bisa mencetak gol hiburan melalui Paul Scharner. Skor 9-1 pun menjadi hasil yang mencolok.

"Ini seperti mimpi. Brilian. Para pemain tidak dapat mempercayainya. Jika Anda meilhat penyelesaiannya, semua gol tersebut tidak dapat dipercaya. Aku melihat ke arah manajer dan ia pun merasa terkejut," ungkap Defoe usai laga yang dikutip Reuters.

Tak hanya itu saja, Defoe pun menjadi pemain ketiga dalam sejarah Premier League yang mampu mencetak lima gol dalam satu pertandingan. Dua pemain sebelumnya adalah senior Defoe yaitu Andy Cole dan Alan Shearer.

Cole melakukannya saat Manchester United mengalahkan Ipswich Town 9-0, 4 Maret 1995. Rekor kedua dicetak Alan Shearer ketika membela Newcastle United kontra Sheffield Wednesday, 19 September 1999, yang berakhir 8-0.

Hebatnya Defoe melakukannya di era millenium kedua alias di tahun 2000-an ketika sepakbola Inggris berjalan lebih ketat dan bertaburan banyak pemain berkualitas di sana.

Musim ini Defoe memang sedang tajam-tajamnya. Ia menjadi pemain pertama yang mencetak hat-trick di Liga Inggris saat Spurs membantai Hull City 5-1 di pekan kedua. Defoe pun kini berada di puncak topskorer dengan 11 gol mengungguli Fernando Torres (Liverpool) dengan 10 gol.

Tak hanya di level klub, Defoe pun garang bila sudah berganti kostum timnas Inggris. Dipasang dalam tiga laganya tahun ini, Defoe total menceploskan lima gol.

London - Bukan hanya tiga angka yang bisa didapat Tottenham Hotspur dari kemenangan 9-1 atas Wigan. The Lilywhites juga berhak menempel Manchester United untuk urusan rekor kemenangan terbesar.

White Hart Lane, Minggu (22/11/2009) malam WIB, menjadi saksi sejarah Spurs. Sembilan gol yang berhasil mereka lesakkan dan kecolongan satu kali membuat Robbie Keane dkk mengisi sejumlah lembaran baru catatan rekor.

Skor tersebut menduduki posisi dua untuk urusan kemenangan terbesar sebuah tim yang melakoni laga kandang sepanjang sejarah Liga Primer. Pemilik catatan tertinggi adalah MU yang menggelontor Ipswich Town 9-0 pada 4 Maret 1995.

Rekor lain untuk Spurs secara interen adalah, kemenangan telak tersebut merupakan yang terbesar sepanjang klub ini mengarungi ketatnya kompetisi dengan kasta tertinggi di tanah Inggris.

Spurs sebenarnya pernah meraih kemenangan dengan margin yang lebih besar, yakni pada saat mereka menenggelamkan Bristol 9-0 di tahun 1977, akan tetapi hasil itu mereka dapat saat berlaga di divisi dua.

Menanggapi kemenangan bersejarahnya tersebut, Manajer Spurs, Harry Redknapp memuji habis anak asuhnya terutama Jermain Defoe yang juga berhasil masuk dalam buku rekor dengan lima golnya dalam satu laga.

"Keseluruhan tim, setiap orang bekerja dengan cukup baik dan bermain dengan bagus. Untuk Jermain, dapat mengemas lima gol merupakan penampilan yang luar biasa," tuturnya di Sky Sports.

Tottenham Hotspur's remarkable 9-1 victory over Wigan Athletic was the second biggest victory since the formation of the Premier League in 1992/93.

Only Manchester United have bettered that score with their 9-0 thrashing of Ipswich Town in March 1995.

Spurs' result was all the more remarkable as they were only 1-0 up at half-time, making them the first team to score eight goals in one half.

Jermain Defoe joined Andy Cole and Alan Shearer as the only players to score five goals in a Premier League match.

However the Tottenham Hotspur striker is out on his own as the only man to net five in one half.

Shearer was the last man to hit five in one match. He achieved the feat in Newcastle United's 8-0 win at home to Sheffield Wednesday in September 1999.

Cole became the first player to register five goals in a Premier League fixture when he enjoyed a field day against Ipswich Town in March 1995.

That 9-0 scoreline at Old Trafford remains the biggest win in Premier League history.

This Old Trafford fixture in March 1995 looked an obvious home win - but no-one could have foreseen the Premier League record scoreline.

Manchester United went into the match three points behind leaders Blackburn Rovers while George Burley's Ipswich Town side were second from bottom and eight points adrift of safety.

Roy Keane opened the scoring on 15 minutes before Andy Cole hit a classic hat-trick, netting three in succession after 19, 37 and 53 minutes.

With the score 1-0 at half time at White Hart Lane, you would have been forgiven for thinking this match was going to be decided by the odd goal.

But after the break, a rampant Spurs side emerged from the dressing room, putting a further eight goals past Wigan goalkeeper Chris Kirkland, who would later be praised for making a string of fine saves that prevented the scoreline from being even greater.

After Peter Crouch netted the opener in the first half, his strike partner Jermain Defoe scored five goals in the second period, the only player to do that in a match since Alan Shearer for Newcastle United in 1999. The former West Ham man scored his first three goals in seven minutes the second fastest hat-trick in Premier League history, as Harry Redknapp's side cruised to their biggest win for 32 years.

The victory sent ambitious Spurs fourth, to the Champions League qualification places and level on points with local rivals Arsenal.

The returning Aaron Lennon was to prove majorly influential, setting up three of the home side's goals and netting one of his own, with Kirkland also on the score-sheet for an own goal, and Niko Kranjcar putting the icing on the cake with a ninth on 90 minutes.

Paul Scharner had pulled one back for the Latics near the hour mark, but it was little more than a consolation.

Mark Hughes made it 5-0 two minutes later and quickly added his second before Cole got his fourth on 65 minutes.

Paul Ince made it 8-0 with 18 minutes remaining and Cole rounded off an astonishing afternoon with his fifth three minutes from time.

Bobby Robson could not have wished for a better first home match as Newcastle United manager as his rampant side rattled in eight without reply at home to Sheffield Wednesday in September 1999.

With his side out to impress the new manager, they ended a run of 14 successive Premiership matches without victory in emphatic style.

Talismanic captain Alan Shearer scored a first-half hat-trick in 11 minutes, before adding two more in the second half.

Defender Aaron Hughes scored the opener at St James' Park after just 12 minutes, to get Robson's return to the club off to a flyer.

Shearer had the impressive Kieron Dyer to thank for his super quick hat-trick, with the England man proving the creative force in the Magpies' midfield.

And as the second half started in much the same vein as the first, Dyer was rewarded for his troubles, getting a fifth goal early on, with Gary Speed making it six 12 minutes from time.

But there was still so much more to come from the home side, with Shearer adding another two to his tally in the last nine minutes to complete a remarkable afternoon on Tyneside.

Had it not have been for the introduction of super-sub Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, this match may well have ended a mere 4-1 to the away side.

After first-choice strike pair Dwight Yorke and Andy Cole had each netted a brace, Solskjaer came on to put his own stamp on the match, scoring four times as Manchester United produced a magnificent Premiership record away win.

Yorke had put the visitors ahead after just 85 seconds, before Alan Rogers had equalised for Nottingham Forest on six minutes.

But Ron Atkinson's men were shown what life in the top-flight is all about when Andy Cole first restored the Red Devils' lead straight from the restart, and then extended it just minutes after the break, netting the rebound after Forest keeper' Dave Besant had saved a shot from Yorke.

Yorke's second came midway through the second half, slotting home into an empty net after Jon Olav Hjelde had inadvertently diverted Jesper Blomqvist's low cross onto his own post.

Solskjaer replaced Yorke on 71 minutes and an already one-sided match became a rout. By the first minute of stoppage time, the Norwegian had sealed his hat-trick, before adding a fourth with just seconds remaining.

The result left Forest rooted to the bottom of the league, while Sir Alex Ferguson's United marched on to win the Premier League title among an historic treble of trophies.

Middlesbrough ended the 2007/08 season in some style, putting eight goals past Manchester City on what was to be the Blues' manager Sven-Goran Eriksson's last match in charge.

Neither side had much to play for, with Middlesbrough already safe from relegation and City unable to reach the UEFA Cup qualifying places.

But that did not stop Gareth Southgate's men from giving their home fans a delightful memory to help get them through the long, football-free summer months.

Riverside hero Stewart Downing fired home a 16th-minute penalty after Richard Dunne was sent off for bringing down Tuncay Sanli, with Afonso Alves slotting home the second from 14 yards eight minutes before the break.

A superb volley with the outside of his left foot from Downing, another strike from Alves, a deflected long-range effort from Adam Johnson, Fabio Rochemback's 30-yard free-kick and a goal from Jeremie Aliadiere were followed by a consolation for Elano before Alves completed his hat-trick.

Tottenham's 9-1 defeat of Wigan was the second-biggest Premier League win in history and a real throwback to yesteryear when such results were commonplace on muddy pitches during the nine-match Christmas/New Year programme.

But before Wigan's critics start consigning them to tiers two or three of football or suggest they should return to Rugby League, history suggests it's more likely just a blip for the side who hammered Chelsea last month.

There have been just seven other top-flight seven-goal performances since football began in this country (1992 according to the TV) and only four of those beaten teams have been relegated.

Indeed one - Everton - finished fourth and stole a Champions League place from deadly rivals Liverpool - before UEFA allowed the Reds in because they had won it then breathed a sigh of relief as the Toffees slipped out of all European competition by the end of August.

Whatever happens to Wigan this season, they'll want revenge when Spurs swank into the DW Stadium later this season - and don't forget they lost 8-2 at Derby in 1976 - the season White Hart Lane tasted relegation so anything's possible.

Wigan Athletic's playing staff have offered to reimburse the entrance fees for all supporters who travelled to White Hart Lane to witness their 9-1 destruction at the hands of Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday.

Spurs equalled the record for goals scored in a Premier League game when producing a ruthless second-half performance, with Jermain Defoe scoring five goals to equal the record jointly held by Andy Cole and Alan Shearer.

After suffering such acute embarrassment, Wigan's players will now personally refund the admission price paid by every Latics supporter who attended the game in North London.

"We feel that as a group of players we badly let down our supporters yesterday (Sunday), and this is a gesture we have to make and pay them back for their tremendous loyalty," Melchiot told the club's official website.

"There's not a lot else to say, just that as a group of professionals we were embarrassed by the way we performed. We feel it was below our standard and this is something we feel we owe to the fans.

"Now we have to draw a line under the game, focus completely on training this week and bounce back on Saturday. We are professionals, we will take it on the chin and move on, but it's important that we do not take our supporters for granted."

Wigan manager Roberto Martinez said after the game: "It was unacceptable and unexpected. The way we defended in key moments was not good enough. I am embarrassed as it's a result we don't want to be associated with. We need to move on quickly and give a good reaction in the next game."

Grant gets Pompey job

AVRAM GRANT has been confirmed as the new boss of Portsmouth.

The ex-Chelsea manager replaces Paul Hart who was sacked earlier this week after a dreadful run of results.

Pompey chief executive officer Peter Storrie said: "Avram is a very experienced and respected manager who has managed at the highest level.

"The board believes he is the man to help steer the club out of the relegation zone.

"He knows the club, the players and the set-up at Fratton Park, so it was the logical move to make him the next manager, once the board had decided to relieve Paul Hart of the role.

"He will take charge of training on Friday alongside first-team coaches Paul Groves and Ian Woan."

Grant was the favourite for the position having returned to Pompey as director of football in October.

His first match in charge will be against Manchester United at Fratton Park on Saturday.

It is what every team craves, a player who somehow manages to find himself in the right place at the right time. When that one chance you have been waiting 90 minutes for finally comes, these are the guys you want the ball to fall to. Sport.co.uk looks at the Top Ten Fantastic Foxes in the box.

Alan Shearer

A good old fashioned centre forward; strong, physical, good in the air and in possession of a ferocious shot, Alan Shearer had it all. His dedication and work ethic made him a fan favourite at Southampton, Blackburn Rovers and of course Newcastle United. Forever remembered for rediscovering his form during England’s Euro 96 run, Shearer led the line at St James Park for ten years scoring 206 goals, a club record which will take some beating.

Gary Lineker

Arguably England’s greatest ever forward, Lineker consistently scored goals throughout his career. Starting at Leicester City, to whom he returned recently to lend financial backing, Lineker went on to ply his trade for Everton, Barcelona and Tottenham Hotspur before winding down his career with Grampus Eight in Japan. Better known these days for his crisp selling, Match of the Day anchoring, arm-candy girlfriend and rivaling Alan Titchmarsh as the country’s housewife favourite, his eye for goal should never be forgotten.

Robbie Fowler

An icon on Merseyside, Robbie Fowler is probably one of the best natural finishers the English game has ever seen. Fowler bagged an impressive 191 goals in 369 appearances for Liverpool and is still scoring goals for fun today in the Australian A-League, where he plays for North Queensland Fury. Never blessed with blistering pace, Fowler used his movement and natural instinct in front of goal to terrorise defenders. Just ask Arsenal fans who watched the cheeky Scouser skewer the Gunners in 1995 with the fastest hat-trick in EPL history; four minutes and 33 seconds of pure class.

Ian Rush

Always alive and alert, Rush thrived off activity in an around the 18-yard box. An Anfield legend, the Welshman scored 229 league goals during his two spells at Liverpool. Goals followed him to Italy for his time in Turin at Juventus and before returning to England a more complete player. Playing more with his back to goal in his later playing days, Rush not only continued to score goals but provided countless opportunities for others as well.

Andrew Cole

Andy or Andrew, no matter what name he goes by there is no getting away from the fact that Cole was a goal machine. Prolific at Newcastle United, Cole earned himself a move to Old Trafford where he would form one of the deadliest partnerships, alongside Dwight Yorke, in the history of the EPL. Although his international career never really got going, Cole had an outstanding career at the top of the game. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said for his woeful attempts at conquering the pop chart back in 1999.

Ruud Van Nistelrooy

Van Nistelrooy isn’t your stereotypical Dutch forward, his game isn’t about total football, it’s simply about hitting the back of the net; luckily he is very good at it. After moving to Manchester United in 2001, Van Nistelrooy became an instant hit at Old Trafford, netting 23 goals in his first season. With Giggs and Beckham on the flanks, Van Nistelrooy thrived on the service and went onto score 95 league goals in just 150 appearances for the Red Devils. Not the first man to fall out with Sir Alex Ferguson, the hitman departed for Spain in 2006 where he continues to score goals for Real Madrid.

Michael Owen

Owen burst onto the scene in 1997 as a fresh faced 17-year-old demonstrating his quality right from the outset. Blistering pace and a cool head in front of goal, Owen became an instant hero with the Anfield faithful. That wonder goal against Argentina at the 1998 FIFA World Cup still makes the hairs on the back of your neck stand to this day and catapulted Owen onto the world stage. Although injuries have disrupted the latter stages of his career, there is no questioning his predatory instinct inside the twelve yard box. A stoppage time winner in this season’s Manchester derby was another glimpse of why he should be on a plane to South Africa next summer.

Ian Wright

If you have been unfortunate enough to see Wright’s latest TV venture ‘live from studio five’ forgive him, simply watch some of his classic goals and remember him the way he deserves to be remembered. A Highbury hero, Wright always wore his heart on his sleeve and was involved in some classic battles over the years. Defenders could not cope with his movement and determination and there is no doubt he earned every single goal he ever scored. Deposed by Thierry Henry as the north London club’s greatest ever scorer, Ian Wright, Wright, Wright (so good they named him thrice) will never be forgotten.

Jermain Defoe

Defoe has been scoring goals for fun in 2009 for both club and country displaying all the qualities of a top class forward. It should come as no surprise really, as Defoe made everyone aware of his talents during a loan spell at AFC Bournemouth back in 2001, where he broke a post-war record set by John Aldridge, by netting in ten consecutive league games. With pace to burn, great movement and a cool head, Defoe has all but certainly secured himself a place in Fabio Capello’s World Cup squad. It will surely only be a matter of time until you see him pictured with more z-list celebrity totty on his arm too.

Henrik Larsson

Larsson is often unfairly overlooked when it comes to these types of lists as he spent long periods of his career in Scotland. Yes, the standard of the SPL isn’t the best but 175 goals in 221 league appearances is nothing to be frowned upon. The impact he made late on his career at Manchester United and Barcelona, plus his 37 international goals for Sweden is more than enough justification for his inclusion in this list.

The Blues ended the month with three wins and three clean sheets to stay top of the Barclays Premier League.

Ancelotti's side started November with the visit of current champions Manchester United to Stamford Bridge. A late goal from captain John Terry was enough to seal the win for Chelsea in what proved to be a closely fought contest between the two title rivals.

A potentially tricky home match with newly-promoted Wolverhampton Wanderers followed but three goals in the first 22 minutes, two from Michael Essien and one from Florent Malouda, set Ancelotti's men on their way. The Blues eventually won 4-0.

Debut Season

Chelsea completed the month with a stunning 3-0 win away to an Arsenal side that have impressed in the Barclays Premier League this season. Two goals from the in-form Didier Drogba, and an own goal from Gunners' defender Thomas Vermaelen ensured the Blues ended November with a 100 per cent record.

This is the first time Ancelotti has won the Barclays Manager of the Month in his debut season in the Barclays Premier League. He joins compatriot Claudio Ranieri, who also won the award as Chelsea manager in March 2004, as only the second Italian to scoop the prize.

Hull City midfielder Jimmy Bullard has clinched the Barclays Player of the Month award for November.

Bullard put in a string of impressive displays, contributing both valuable goals and assists which saw the Tigers remain unbeaten throughout the month.

His side started November with a home fixture against Stoke City. The visitors were 1-0 up at half-time but a Bullard-inspired Hull came back in the second half, with the former Wigan Athletic man setting up Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink for a 91st minute winner.

Late Penalty

A crucial six-pointer with West Ham United followed as Bullard was again in the thick of the action, scoring a deflected free kick and penalty in a 3-3 thriller. Bullard completed the month by being instrumental in a strong Hull second half performance at Manchester City, slotting home a late penalty to earn a valuable away point.

This is the first time that Bullard has won the Barclays Player of the Month award, after bursting onto the Barclays Premier League scene with Wigan in the 2005-06 season.

London - Dibekap cedera engkel parah sejak tiga tahun lalu, Dean Ashton akhirnya menyerah. Bomber West Ham United itu memutuskan untuk mengakhiri karir sepakbolanya di usia yang masih 26 tahun.

Ashton mendapat cedera tersebut pada saat latihan bersama timnas Inggris pada Agustus 2006. Saat itu pemain yang berposisi sebagai penyerang tengah itu mendapat tekel agresif dari Shaun Wright Philllips yang membuat engkelnya patah.

Setelah menjalani masa istirahat pemulihan, ternyata diketahui bahwa cedera yang diderita Ashton tersebut lebih parah dari yang diperkirakan. Dia pun bolak-balik menepi karena engkelnya berulangkali kambuh.

Setelah 14 bulan tidak bermain di tim utama dan kelanjutan karirnya berulang kali dispekulasikan, Aston akhirnya mengumumkan pengunduran dirinya pada Jumat (11/12/2009).

West Ham mengaku cukup berat melepas pemain yang mereka gaet dari Norwich City pada Januari 2006 tersebut. Pihak klub kemungkinan akan meminta ganti rugi kepada Asosiasi Sepakbola Inggris (FA) yang telah 'merusak' Ashton dengan biaya tujuh juta poundsterling.

"Ini merupakan hari yang sedih dan berat bagi kami dan Dean. Saya ingin mengucapkan terimakasih atas semua upayanya dan kami berharap yang terbaik untukknya," ujar Chief Executif West Ham, Scott Duxbury di situs resmi klub.

"Saya juga mengucakan terimakasih kepada fans atas kesabaran mereka selama ini dan atas pengertian bahwa ini merupakan periode yang sulit," sambungnya.

DEAN ASHTON has officially retired from football today.

The West Ham and England striker has been fighting an ankle injury he first sustained on international duty in 2006.

Ashton, 26, was warned by doctors he risked being unable to walk properly if he continued his desperate bid to remain in the game.

The £7.2million signing from Norwich in January 2006 last played in the Premier League for West Ham 15 months ago.

His retirement is not a surprise but it is still a massive blow for West Ham, who badly need a player of his quality up front.

Equally Ashton, while having prepared for this day for several months, is devastated because at, at one stage, he was convinced he would return to full fitness.

He was hopeful of not only being a success at West Ham but also a part of Fabio Capello's World Cup squad for South Africa.

Capello often admitted he was a big fan of the player.

Ashton, who started at Crewe, made just 56 appearances at West Ham, bagging 19 goals.

His problems started in August 2006 when he was called up by England coach Steve McClaren for a friendly against Greece.

He broke his ankle in the first training session following a collision with Shaun Wright-Phillips.

West Ham are pursuing a claim against the FA but as Ashton eventually returned to action, they could well be unsuccessful.

After missing a full season, he came back in 2007-08, playing 35 games and hitting 11 goals.

It earned him a new five-year contract at Upton Park, with wages of about £50,000.

He also won an England cap under Capello, playing against Trinidad & Tobago in June last year but he broke down again last September.

In May this year, Ashton was hopeful he would be in good shape for the start of the season but he started to suffer continued problems with the ankle.

He is likely to take a break from the game before deciding whether to go for a career in coaching.

He scored 18 goals in 46 appearances for the Canaries, earning him a then club-record 7.25 million pound move to West Ham.

And despite several surgeries and intense rehabilitation programmes, Ashton has decided to act on medical advice and quit the professional game amid warnings over his long-term fitness and mobility.

“We want to have a word with him about his future, to see if he wants to stay in the game. We will offer him various courses - coaching, media - there’s a whole host of opportunities really if he wants to stay connected with the game.”

West Ham manager Gianfranco Zola admits his struggling side's attacking plans have been left in tatters following Dean Ashton's decision to retire from football because of injury.

Ashton, 26, announced on Friday he would be hanging up his boots after failing in his bid to fully recover from an ankle problem sustained while training with England in August 2006. That means Zola is now left short up front - especially with Carlton Cole set to be out for at least another month with a knee-ligament injury - and has the wrong kind a selection headache in terms of attacking options for tomorrow's trip to Birmingham.

"I always hoped he would be playing for me since the summer," said the Italian, who now has just one fit out-and-out striker in his squad in Guillermo Franco. "All our campaign during the summer was conditioned to the fact that we were waiting for him. We left a place for him as we strongly hoped he would be back."

He added: "I feel for him and I feel for me as well as I wonder what it would have been like to have a player like him in my squad, as he would have made a big difference for us. That is my sorrow.

"I would have wanted to see him training with me all of the time but I only had him for one day and that is sad for me."

Zola hailed Ashton as a "skilful and talented" striker who he reckons would have represented England at next summer's World Cup finals in South Africa, had he been fit.

Zola added: "It was painful for me when I retired when I was 39 - he is only 26. To see such a player having to retire is very sad.

"Football is something you do with all your heart and passion so I leave it to you to imagine how he is feeling right now.

"West Ham will miss his talent and goals and the confidence the whole team gets with having players like him in your side. He could get a goal at any time."

DEAN ASHTON quit football yesterday and admitted: I'll never be able to run again.

The former West Ham and England striker opened his heart to SunSport in an exclusive emotion-charged interview.

Ashton, 26, said: "It's a rubbish situation. I just want to be able to walk properly and, at the moment, I cannot.

"My health is obviously more important than football. I was told if I kept trying to play football, I might never walk again.

"I am going to hospital on Tuesday for a fifth operation.

"It's unlikely I will ever be able to jog again but right now, I can't walk properly.

"My left ankle is still very sore. It will be a while before I feel OK and get over this disappointment.

"There is a bit of bitterness and I think 'Why me?'. It's a sad part of football."

Ashton gave up his fight to play again after failing to recover from an ankle injury caused by Shaun Wright- Phillips on England duty in August 2006.

Ashton, a £7.25million signing from Norwich in January 2006, realised his career was over when he broke down again in training last August.

He added: "I was never the same, I was always in pain."

West Ham are now looking to claim off the FA's insurers.

Ashton is looking at other avenues of compensation from the FA's insurers as they, along with Chelsea, who Wright-Phillips played for at the time, could be liable.

apa mungkin doi tidak mendapatkan perawatan yang memadai yaa selama cedera ..., jadi akhirnya harus pensiun dini ...
poor Ashton ..., sempet setuju aja sih waktu Opa mo rekrut doi ..., but mungkin cuman rumors yaa waktu itu ..., who knows :-/:-?:-??

Rasanya emang dah dari sononya opa. maksudnya mungkin dia nggak punya engkel yang kuat dan kemampuan recovery yang bagus. jadi pas kena cedera parah ya jadinya parah banget. klo perawatan sih sepertinya dah maksimum.

Moga Hargo nggak jadi seperti ini.

Mungkin dah jalannya Ashton nggak jadi pemaen top. mungkin saja dia bakalan jadi pelatih jempolan. yang sabar aja... tiap orang dah punya jalannya sendiri2. mungkin pemaen sepak bola bukan merupakan karir puncak dia.

Ashton menurut gw salah satu striker di EPL yang bisa dibilang masuk jajaran papan atas.. dia punya naluri dan skill yang tajam.. selalu jadi ancaman buat bek2 lawan.. sangat sedih liat berita ini...

Former Manchester United players are typically the only players to get a warm reception at Old Trafford. If a previously unheard of sub makes an appearance, they will get a chorus of “who the ****in ell are you?”. If they’ve mouthed off at the ref over an incident or made a particularly nasty challenge on one of ours they will get booed every time they go near the ball. And God help them if they’ve ever played for Liverpool!

However, on a rare few occasions, our fans can be appreciative of the opposition.

The most obvious example is when Ronaldo (the real/fat/Brazilian one) came to Old Trafford for the European Cup quarter-final in 2003. We’d been batted at their place, with them going 3-0 up with less than 50 minutes played, Ruud van Nistelrooy face with a consolation goal to make it 3-1. We were up against it if we were going to progress to the semis, but it’s never say die at United.

Ronaldo got an away goal to cancel out Ruud’s with just 12 minutes played. Van Nistelrooy equalised just before half time, only for Ronaldo to put them 2-1 up on 50 minutes. An own goal put us back on a level playing field a couple of minutes later, but with less than an hour played, Ronaldo got his hattrick. David Beckham then came off the bench, obviously easy to impress against the club he was planning on leaving us for, and scored two goals to give us the 4-3 lead. It wasn’t enough to see us through but we’d just witnessed a bloody brilliant game of football and had to gracefully acknowledge we’d been knocked out by the better team.

In contrast to Steve McManaman, who’d received abuse all match, the crowd stood and applauded Ronaldo off the field when he was subbed with over 20 minutes to go, having done the job. A truly marvellous display.

Whilst not on the same level, Dean Ashton is a player who got a good reaction by our fans. We were drawing close to the end of the 2007-2008 season. In our last league game we’d lost to Chelsea and in our last match we’d beaten Barcelona to book our place in the Champions League final. Our nerves were in tatters.

West Ham, who had denied us the title in 1995 after miraculously keeping the ball out of the net, were coming to Old Trafford and they were going to be up for it.

Thankfully, before we even really had any time to worry, we were 3-0 up. Cristiano Ronaldo grabbed two whilst Tevez bagged the third with just over 25 minutes played. We were now surely just one game away from confirming the title with a win against Wigan.

However, the ball came to Dean Ashton in front of the Stretford End and with a superb over head kick he rifled the ball in to the back of Van der Sar’s net. So we shrugged and applauded him. That wasn’t much else we could do. It was a great goal.

He was linked to United at the time with us looking to bulk up our strikeforce. He seemed a likeable fella, was a United fan as a kid, and the manager liked him. When he signed a five year extension with West Ham a couple of months later, I was a little disappointed if I’m honest. I wasn’t desperate for us to sign him, but I liked him, and had wondered if we could have got him for a good price.

Regardless, the sad news is that, aged just 26-years-old, Ashton has been forced in to retirement. His initial ankle injury came three years ago and he’s never been able to properly shake it off.

“It’s a rubbish situation,” Ashton said yesterday. “I just want to be able to walk properly and, at the moment, I cannot. My health is obviously more important than football. I went to the side and was crying on the floor. This was the second time I’d broken down in tears. I knew this was it. Definitely. My last chance had gone. I was finished. The lads were all shocked and saddened to see me like that. Generally, I don’t show a lot of emotion so it was probably strange to see a big lad like me crying. But I knew that was it.”

Liverpool - Buruknya kondisi cuaca di Inggris memaksa beberapa pertandingan diputuskan untuk ditunda. Salah satu laga yang ditunda tersebut adalah partai antara Liverpool melawan Tottenham Hotspur.

Sedianya kedua tim akan bermain di Anfield pada hari Minggu (10/1/2010) mendatang. Namun, cuaca dingin yang mendera Inggris sejak beberapa pekan terakhir memaksa pertandingan itu mencari tanggal lain.

Liverpool secara resmi menyatakan bahwa tak ada masalah dengan lapangan Anfield. Yang menjadi masalah akses jalanan menuju stadion kebanggaan The Reds tersebut. Banyak jalan menjadi licin akibat tertutup salju yang terus turun.

"Meski lapangan Anfield memadai untuk menggelar pertandingan, masalah yang kita hadapi adalah kondisi jalanan di sekitar dan menuju stadion yang licin," demikian statemen Liverpool di situs resmi klub.

"Keselamatan suporter suporter kami adalah yang utama. Setelah mengikuti ramalan cuaca untuk 48 jam ke depan, maka kami memutuskan untuk menunda pertandingan tersebut."

Selain laga antara Liverpool vs Tottenham, ada beberapa laga lainnya yang juga ditunda pada akhir pekan ini. Laga-laga tersebut adalah Burnley vs Stoke City, Fulham vs Portsmouth dan Sunderland vs Bolton Wanderers.

Sebelum ini, laga antara Arsenal melawan Bolton pada hari Rabu lalu juga ditunda akibat alasan yang sama.

London - Cuaca dingin tak hanya menunda pertandingan di Liverpool dan London, tetapi juga di Hull. Laga antara tuan rumah Hull City melawan Chelsea juga ikut ditunda.

Seperti diberitakan sebelumnya, pada akhir pekan ini ada beberapa pertandingan yang harus ditunda terkait cuaca yang kurang kondusif di Inggris. Beberapa pertandingan terpaksa mencari tanggal lain akibat lapangan tak bisa digunakan.

Sementara Liverpool mengakui bahwa Stadion Anfield bisa-bisa saja digunakan untuk pertandingan. Namun masalahnya, akses menuju stadion kebanggaan The Kop itu terkendala oleh jalan licin dan bersalju.

Kini giliran KC Stadium, yang menjadi laga tempat digelarnya laga antara Hull vs Chelsea, juga tak bisa menyelenggarakan pertandingan. Sedianya laga ini akan digelar pada hari Sabtu waktu setempat.

"Pertandingan pada hari Sabtu (9/1/2010) melawan Hull City ditunda karena masalah cuaca. Pertandingan akan diatur ulang, seperti halnya beberapa pertandingan lain yang tak bisa digelar karena masalah cuaca," demikian statemen di situs resmi Chelsea.

Away Win

Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney has won the Barclays Player of the Month award for January.

Rooney produced a series of outstanding performances to help maintain the Red Devils' Barclays Premier League title push.

The England striker scored six goals during the month and in doing so soared to the top of the Barclays Race for the Golden Boot, becoming the first player to reach 20 goals this season.

Rooney was on the score sheet against Burnley and was again in outstanding form in last weekend's victory against Arsenal, scoring an excellent goal to put the match out of Arsenal's reach.

However, it was United's encounter against Hull City that was the highlight of the month with Rooney scoring all four goals in United's comfortable 4-0 win. Rooney has now scored 20 times in just 23 Barclays Premier League matches this season.

This is the fifth time that Wayne Rooney has won the Barclays Player of the Month award, placing him level with Steven Gerrard as the player with the highest number of individual monthly awards.

The decision was made by the Barclays Awards Panel, which includes representatives from football's governing bodies, the media and fans.

Berikut adalah daftar pemain bola dgn speed tercepat pada tahun 2009 ini. Berdasarkan penelitian yang dilakukan oleh majalah Jerman Der Spiegel.

So, ada beberapa pemain cepat yg ga masuk spt Messi, Pato, dll mungkin posisinya ada di nomer 6 dst.

London - Laga Chelsea kontra Manchester City di Stamford Bridge akhir pekan ini juga akan mempertemukan John Terry dan Wayne Bridge, dua sosok yang belakangan acap disebut dalam halaman gosip di Inggris sana terkait dengan skandal perselingkuhan.

Terungkapnya perselingkuhan Terry dengan seorang gadis bernama Vanessa Perroncel bukan hanya berimbas pada pernikahan kapten Chelsea tersebut dengan istrinya, Toni Poole. Nama Bridge ikut terseret dalam kisah tersebut.

Masalahnya, Vanessa yang jadi Wanita Idaman Lain (WIL) Terry adalah mantan kekasih Bridge. Saat Terry dan Vanessa menjalin hubungan rahasia, Bridge bahkan masih resmi menjadi pacar dari sang gadis.

Itu mengapa Bridge pun dikabarkan sangat terpukul dengan terkuaknya hubungan sang mantan kekasih dengan eks-rekan satu klubnya di Chelsea tersebut. Meski dikenal bukan orang yang suka berkonfrontasi, Bridge diyakini sama sekali belum menghubungi Terry pasca terbukanya skandal tersebut karena sudah kadung terluka hatinya.

Saking sebalnya dengan Terry, Bridge yang membela Chelsea dari tahun 2003 sampai 2009 --sempat dipinjamkan ke Fulham-- tersebut pun santer disebut-sebut tak bakal menyalami Terry saat City bertamu ke markas Chelsea dalam lanjutan partai Liga Inggris akhir pekan ini.

"Orang-orang sudah berusaha membujuknya untuk menyalami Terry, bahkan jika dia tak ingin, karena jika tak begitu dia akan kehilangan simpati," ceplos seorang rekan dekat dari Bridge seperti dikutip Guardian.

Namun begitu, tampaknya takkan ada adegan bersalaman antara Bridge dengan Terry dalam laga di Stamford Bridge nanti. "Tapi faktanya dia tetap berpikir tak bisa menjalani hal itu atau berdusta kepada dirinya sendiri bahwa semuanya baik-baik saja," imbuh sang sumber.

Bridge boleh jadi takkan menyalami Terry nanti karena masih merasa sakit hati. Namun, saat pertandingan berjalan keduanya tentu diharapkan bakal tetap bersikap sportif layaknya olahragawan.

Pertengahan tahun 1990an bisa dibilang adalah tahun kebangkitan Liga Inggris, dimana jika sebelumnya Serie-A Liga Italia begitu terkenal, kini Liga Inggris mulai diminati. Saya sendiri mulai mengikuti Liga Inggris sejak tahun 1995.

Berikut adalah beberapa pemain non Manchester United yang memiliki peranan cukup signifikan di Liga Inggris saat itu. Bahkan mereka juga bisa dibilang sebagai pemain yang harus “diwaspadai” oleh skuad Sir Alex Ferguson saat itu. Beberapa nama terkenal seperti Teddy Sheringham dan Michael Owen tidak saya cantumkan karena mereka kemudian bergabung di Manchester United.

Legenda timnas Inggris ini pernah menjadi pelatih yang cukup disegani saat melatih Newcastle United terutama di tahun 1996-1997 dimana persaingan MU dengan Newcastle berjalan cukup ketat. "King Kev" begitu biasa ia disapa, dianggap sebagai salah satu pelatih berkharisma di Liga Inggris sehingga sempat dipercaya menjadi pelatih timnas Inggris untuk Piala Eropa 2000.

Sebelumnya Ruud Gullit sering tampil reguler di tim utama, tapi belakangan ketika sudah ditunjuk sebagai manajer merangkap pemain Chelsea, cederanya malah sering kambuh sehingga akhirnya Gullit lebih memilih menjadi manager ketimbang merangkap jabatannya sekaligus.

Yang patut dikagumi dari sosok Gullit saat menjadi pelatih Chelsea adalah dirinya tidak pernah terlibat perang mulut dengan manajer klub lain sehingga hubungannya dengan sesama pelatih lainnya berjalan cukup baik. Berbeda dengan saat ini dimana perang mulut antar pelatih kerap terjadi.

Pierlugi Casiraghi merupakan salah satu dari 3 trio Italia yang khusus didatangkan Ruud Gullit ke Chelsea bersama dengan Giafranco Zola dan Gianluca Vialli. Ini juga sebagai titik awal mulai berdatangannya bintang-bintang sepakbola asing dalam Liga Inggris saat itu. Sebelumnya Liga Inggris lebih banyak didominasi pemain dari Inggris Raya. Berkat Gullit, semua klub mulai meniru mengontrak banyak pemain asing dari berbagai negara.

Casiraghi memang pemain berbakat dan terkenal baik dalam menyerang, sayang cidera parah membuatnya harus pensiun muda. Padahal pelatih timnas Italia saat itu, Cesare Maldini sering memberi kepercayaan padanya. Ironis memang banyak pemain bagus harus pensiun muda karena cedera yang tidak kunjung sembuh. LONDON, KOMPAS.com - Premier League merambah bisnis. Mulai musim depan, otoritas sepak bola divisi tertinggi di Inggris itu akan memproduksi sendiri pertandingan sepak bola. Mereka juga akan menyiarkan pertandingan dengan saluran telivisi baru ke seluruh dunia.

Televisi milik Premier League itu akan siaran tujuh hari seminggu dan 24 jam sehari. Tapi, siaran itu hanya untuk luar Inggris.

Perusahaan milik Premier League itu nantinya menyiarkan berita, sepak bola klasik, diskusi stadion, dan program individu. Premier League juga akan mengeluarkan aturan baru agar pelatih tidak menghindari media dan temu pers setelah pertandingan.

Aturan baru itu bernama Q17 yang mengatakan, "Mulai musim 2010-11, semua pelatih harus menghadiri sendiri dan berpartisipasi dalam wawancara setelah pertandingan demi kepentingan penyiaran televisi dan radio. Penolakan tanpa alasan yang tepat dianggap melanggar aturan dan akan dikenai sanksi."

Sebagai contoh, pelatih Manchester United, Sir Alex Ferguson, menolak berbicara dengan BBC, media yang memegang hak siar Premier League, sejak 2004. MU juga tak mengirimkan perwakilannya dalam temu pers seusai pertandingan. (AP)

Pemain Arsenal Aaron Ramsey mengalami cedera patah kaki saat timnya menghadapi Stoke City.

Insiden patah kaki pada pemain saat pertandingan berlangsung kembali terjadi. Korbannya kali ini adalah Aaron Ramsey, pemain tengah Arsenal.

Insiden itu terjadi kala Arsenal dijamu Stoke City di Britannia Stadium, Minggu (28/2) dinihari WIB, tepatnya di menit 66.

Aaron Ramsey yang menguasai bola di daerah pertahan Arsenal mendapat tekel keras dari Ryan Shawcross. Ia langsung terjatuh dan memegangi kaki kanannya yang terlihat patah.

Karena insiden itu, pertandingan sempat dihentikan beberapa menit. Para pemain dari kedua tim juga menunjukkan raut wajah yang terpukul atas insiden tersebut. Shawcross sendiri langsung mendapat kartu merah atas pelanggaran yang dilakukannya itu.

Pertandingan antara Chelsea kontra City di Stamford Bridge, Sabtu (27/2/2010), tak hanya mengetengahkan kisah perebutan tiga angka di antara kedua klub. Juga ada cerita mengenai Bridge dan Terry. Keduanya terlibat di dalam jalinan sebuah skandal.

Adalah perselingkuhan Terry dengan seorang gadis bernama Vanessa Perroncel yang melatarbelakangi hal itu. Masalahnya, bukan hanya Terry sudah memiliki istri tetapi perempuan selingkuhannya tersebut juga adalah kekasih Bridge ketika itu.

Bridge kini memang sudah putus dengan Perroncel, tapi terkuaknya kisah tadi tak ayal bikin pemain City tersebut sakit hati dengan Terry yang adalah mantan rekan satu klubnya di Chelsea.

Stoke - Tekel horor yang pernah membuat Eduardo da Silva patah kaki kembali terulang. Kali ini tekel semacam itu mendera gelandang muda Arsenal, Aaron Ramsey.

Laga di Britannia Stadium, Minggu (28/2/2010) dinihari WIB, memasuki menit 67 ketika Ryan Shawcross melakukan tekel terhadap gelandang berusia 19 tahun itu. Ramsey pun mengerang kesakitan dan terkapar di lapangan.

Para pemain Arsenal dan Stoke City yang menyaksikan kejadian tersebut terkejut dan buru-buru meminta petugas medis untuk memberikan pertolongan. Sementara Shawcross, yang merupakan kapten Stoke, dikartu merah wasit. Dalam perjalanannya meninggalkan lapangan, ia menangis lantaran tahu akibat dari tekelnya.

Tak ada siaran ulang dari televisi atas tekel horor Shawcross. Dan Ramsey pun menerima perawatan dari petugas medis selama beberapa menit di lapangan. Gelandang asal Wales ini kemudian ditandu meninggalkan lapangan dengan masker oksigen di wajahnya. Seperdi diberitakan Sky Sports, ia langsung dibawa ke rumah sakit.

"Kami harus segera menerbangkannya ke London untuk melihat apakah dia butuh dioperasi. Kami tak tahu berapa lama dia akan absen, tapi yang jelas akan sangat lama," ujar Arsene Wenger.

Dari foto yang dilansir oleh Reuters, terlihat bahwa kaki kanan Ramsey patah. Hal ini mengingatkan orang-orang akan kejadian yang menimpa Eduardo dua tahun lalu.

Kala itu, pada 23 Februari 2008, penyerang berpaspor Kroasia tersebut menderita cedera serius akibat ditekel oleh pemain Birmingham City, Martin Taylor. Tekel Taylor mengenai engkel kaki kiri, membuat Eduardo langsung terkapar di lapangan dan kemudian absen selama berbulan-bulan.

Eduardo nyaris tak merumput selama setahun akibat tekel tersebut. Ia barus bisa bermain lagi pada 16 Februari 2009 kala Arsenal berlaga di Piala FA melawan Cardiff City.
