Kevin Keegan’s Newcastle United defeat Manchester United 5-0. United had won the Premier League and FA Cup double the previous season and hadn’t lost 5-0 since October 1984, while United keeper Peter Schmeichel had gone over nine hours without conceding a goal.

That was all to change in dramatic fashion. Darren Peacock opens the scoring the thirteenth minute and David Ginola adds a second before half-time. After the break, Les Ferdinand adds a third, Shearer a fourth but the best is saved until the last.

Defender Phillipe Albert, gliding through United's half, climaxes his progress with the deftest of left-footed chips over the Big Dane from 25 yards, sending the 36,500 St James’ fans into seventh heaven!

Toon manager Kevin Keegan says afterwards: “Undoubtedly, the most enjoyable day I have had as a manager.”

Sir Alex Ferguson is appointed manager of Manchester United, who are second from bottom in the First Division and were last night eliminated from the League Cup via a 4-1 defeat at Southampton in the Third Round.

Alex declares that it’s his life's mission to ‘knock the Liver bird off its perch’. In fact, United’s only away win in the league in his first season in charge is a 1-0 victory over the Reds at Anfield - Liverpool's only home defeat of the season.

As United drew level with Liverpool last season, notching up an 18th league title, Ferguson, with 21 major trophies to his credit, is affirmed as the most successful club manager in the history of the British game.

Ominously, he then went on to talk about the ‘special moment’ when United managed one more league title than Liverpool!

On This Day: 19 February 1910

One hundred years ago today, Old Trafford opened its gates for the first time as United faced Liverpool in the top flight of English football. And although fortunes on the field may have favoured the visitors, there were still celebrations in Manchester at the birth of an impressive new stadium...

The background: United chairman John Henry Davies stumped up Ł60,000 of his own money for the construction of a new ground in 1909, enlisting Scottish architect Archibald Leitch, the mastermind behind Hampden Park, to design it. After months of construction by Messrs Brameld and Smith of Manchester, Old Trafford was ready to host its first game.

The occasion: A crowd of circa 45,000 witnessed a seven-goal thriller on a pitch "as spick and span, as smooth, and as green as a billiard table" (The Manchester Guardian). United roared into a 3-0 lead through Sandy Turnbull's diving header plus strikes from Tom Homer and George Wall. However, Liverpool hit back through Arthur Goddard (2) and James Stewart (2) to win 4-3.

The team: United's first-ever line-up at Old Trafford was as follows - Harry Moger; George Stacey, Vince Hayes; Dick Duckworth, Charlie Roberts, Sam Blott; Billy Meredith, Harold Halse, Tom Homer, Sandy Turnbull, George Wall.

The aftermath: The inaugural defeat to Liverpool was the Reds' only setback at Old Trafford during 1909/10. Ernest Mangnall's men won their last seven home games and finished fifth in the First Division - eight places higher than the previous season. The Theatre of Dreams was already starting to work its magic on Manchester United...

Poor Owen ... :nohope:

Fifty years ago...

Old Trafford hosted its first-ever League Cup tie on Wednesday 26 October 1960…

The Football League Cup - then a brand new competition - failed to capture the imagination of the Manchester public in 1960.

Only 15,662 turned up to Old Trafford to see the Reds play Exeter City, paltry compared to the 33,695 crowd for the previous midweek match, United’s 6-1 thrashing of West Ham in the league.

Negative press for the League Cup might have explained the poor turn-out. The Times complained, "Our game is now further to be saddled by a pointless, prosaic, parochial new tournament" while the chairman of Wolves declared its introduction "not in the best interests of the game."

Or perhaps the Mancunian punters were privy to United's team sheet – in a move that would be mirrored by Alex Ferguson three decades later, Matt Busby used the League Cup to give his fringe players a run-out and rested some of the stars of his 1960/61 side.

His gamble paid off – even though Bobby Charlton, Bill Foulkes, Harry Gregg and Dennis Viollet all had their feet up, United still strode into the second round with a convincing 4-1 win over the visitors. It was at the second time of asking, mind you – the Reds had been held 1-1 in the original tie, down in Devon, when Alex Dawson claimed the distinction of scoring the club's first-ever goal in the League Cup.

Dawson stayed in the side for the replay but this was to be Albert Quixall’s night. A record British buy in September 1958, the Ł45,000 forward netted twice for only the second time in his United career. He was joined on the scoresheet by two players several years his junior – 19 year-old Johnny Giles and 20 year-old Mark Pearson.

However, any hopes of Busby's men winning the inaugural League Cup were dashed in the next round, even though goalkeeper Gregg and centre-back Foulkes returned to bolster the ranks. The Reds lost 2-1 at Bradford City, and didn’t play again in the competition for five seasons – in fact, United only became annual entrants from 1969/70 onwards.

February 6th will forever be circled on the calendars of everyone connected with Manchester United.

On that day in 1958, the darkest day in United's history, 23 people - including eight players and three members of the club's staff - suffered fatal injuries in the Munich air crash.

Flying back from a European Cup tie against Red Star Belgrade, the team plane stopped in Germany to refuel. The first two attempts to take off from Munich airport were aborted; following a third attempt, the plane crashed.

Twenty-one of the people on board died instantly. Aeroplane captain Kenneth Rayment died a few weeks later from the injuries he sustained while Duncan Edwards - one of the eight victims from the team - passed away 15 days after the crash. The tragedy is an indelible part of United's history, as is Sir Matt Busby overcoming his injuries to build another great team which won the European Cup 10 years later.

Roger Byrne (28), Eddie Colman (21), Mark Jones (24), David Pegg (22), Tommy Taylor (26), Geoff Bent (25), Liam Whelan (22) and Duncan Edwards (21) all died, along with club secretary Walter Crickmer, trainer Tom Curry and coach Bert Whalley.

Eight journalists died - Alf Clarke, Tom Jackson, Don Davies, George Fellows, Archie Ledbrook, Eric Thompson, Henry Rose, and Frank Swift who was a former Manchester City player. Plane captain Ken Rayment perished, as did Sir Matt's friend Willie Satinoff. Travel agent Bela Miklos and crew member Tom Cable also died.

We will never forget.

On 12 September 1956, United*set an example for other English clubs to follow - by becoming the country's first representatives in European competition.

The Reds travelled to Belgium to take on Anderlecht and fulfill an ambition of manager Sir Matt Busby. The Scot was passionate about the opportunity to extend the reach of the game but the domestic ruling bodies -*the FA and*Football League Management Committee - opposed the notion of the European Cup.

"Football has become a world game," explained Busby at the time. "It no longer belongs exclusively to England, Scotland and the British Isles. This is where the future of the game lies."

Busby pushed for United's inclusion and, after it was discovered that the authorities could not legally block entry, the team were able to show their skills to a wider audience on the continent.

The journey to Brussels resulted in a 2-0 win for the Reds, ahead of a thumping 10-0 success in the second leg at City's Maine Road with the floodlights not yet ready to function at Old Trafford.

The first leg at Astrid Park proved to be a tough examination as the match unfolded*in an exciting new environment. The Guardian wrote: "It was a scene of unforgettable beauty as the game started with the pitch flooded in cool silvery light and the dark, beady eyes of the pink-faced hosts peering out from the stands and terraces. It all gave a peculiar sense of theatre."

Dennis Viollet opened the scoring*in the first half*with a powerful drive and Tommy Taylor doubled the lead by heading in a David Pegg cross after previously having a goal disallowed. Martin Lippens missed a penalty when hitting the woodwork and United, with keeper Ray Wood in excellent form, were able to take a two-goal lead back to Manchester.

With United facing Benfica this week in the first assignment of the 2011/2012 Champions League, it will be the 295th European game the club has participated in.

On this day: Reds' record win

United*could have been forgiven for thinking that*European football was going to be a breeze after a sensational 10-0 annihilation of Anderlecht, a result that remains the Reds' biggest of all-time.

Sir Matt Busby's side triumphed 2-0 in the first leg in Brussels but were still anticipating a tough road to the next round of the 1956 European Cup, the first time an English team had entered the competition.

Dennis Viollet led the way with four of the goals and Tommy Taylor also bagged a hat-trick. Liam Whelan (2) and Johnny Berry added their names to the scoresheet*but David Pegg also deserves a mention after setting up many of the 10 goals.

"We were all keyed up for the return match and also a little anxious because we too were playing away from home," said Busby.

"We had to stage the tie at Maine Road because Old Trafford did not then have floodlighting. The conditions were also a little unsettling. It had rained heavily and the pitch was covered in pools of water. We needn't have worried though. The boys won 10-0, an incredible score which possibly had some people assuming that Anderlecht were a poor side.

"But this was no little team from Malta or Iceland. Belgium was a strong soccer nation and Anderlecht were its champions.

"I have just got to say that we ran up what has to be regarded in football circles as a cricket score because we played darned well! I was becoming accustomed to see the great team of those days playing well, but they excelled themselves that night.

"It was, in fact, the finest exhibition of teamwork I had ever seen from any side either at club or international level."

Wayne Rooney crowned his eagerly-awaited United debut with three goals on this day in 2004.

There was great anticipation around Old Trafford when the Reds' deadline-day signing from Everton was fit enough to start against Fenerbahce after being injured at the European Championship with England.

Taking to the Champions League like a duck to water, the teenager added to Ryan Giggs' early header with two crisp strikes before curling a free-kick past Rustu Recber in front of the Stretford End to complete his hat-trick.

Ruud van Nistelrooy, inevitably, and David Bellion also got in on the act on a memorable night in Manchester.

On this Day: Spurs sunk

One of United's most amazing comebacks came at White Hart Lane on this day a decade ago.

The Reds were reeling at the break as goals from Dean Richards, Les Ferdinand and Christian Ziege handed Glenn Hoddle's Spurs a commanding three-goal lead.

Andrew Cole's header from a Gary Neville cross had the hosts quaking a minute after the restart and a famous fightback continued when Laurent Blanc converted a David Beckham corner. With 18 minutes left, Ruud van Nistelrooy levelled the scores and a wonderful move culminated in Juan Sebastian Veron edging United ahead soon afterwards.

Beckham added the coup de grace with a beautiful piece of chest control before despatching his shot past Neil Sullivan, the keeper he beat from the halfway line at Selhurst Park.

Gaskell's remarkable story

.

It's a dream we have all had. You're attending a United match and, due to some unforeseen emergency, you're plunged into action as the call comes out for your services.

It became a reality for 16-year-old goalkeeper David Gaskell when he attended the Charity Shield fixture against City at Maine Road in 1956.

Tired after working with the Old Trafford groundstaff during the day, the teenager was called into action when Ray Wood was forced off due to injury. Duncan Edwards had temporarily taken over the gloves but Gaskell left the stands to leap into the limelight.

"I'd done my jobs as usual * cleaning boots and the baths," he said. "I was in two minds about whether to go to the game as it would be such a rush. My landlady had no idea I had played. Kenneth Wolstenholme never referred to me on the radio commentary. He kept saying Ray Wood was showing his international form!"

Wood at least got the winner's medal sportingly handed over by Gaskell after Dennis Viollet's winner settled the match and the youngster kept a clean sheet. Gaskell's place in United's history was forever secured however, as he remains the youngest-ever post-War player for the Reds. He went on to make 118 appearances for the club and was in goal when Sir Matt Busby won his first trophy after Munich, the FA Cup in 1963.

On this day in 1985,
a Mark Hughes goal wasn't enough to extend United's winning run at the start of the Division One season to 11 games as Luton managed a 1-1 draw at Kenilworth Road. Ron Atkinson's Reds still won four of the next five league games but ended the season in fourth after a major loss of form. We've been discussing in the office how things could have been very different had Big Ron ended the long wait for the title in 1985/86 and, consequently, not been*shown the door the following season. Would that have meant Sir Alex never coming to Old Trafford? It doesn't bear thinking about.

On this day... Exactly 6th October 1956, Our Legend Sir Bobby Charlton, made his debut against Charlton...

Nobody embodies the values of Manchester United better than Sir Bobby Charlton. Having survived the trauma of Munich aged just 20, he played as if every game was for his fallen colleagues, recovering from his injuries to reach the pinnacle for both club and country.

In a 17-year playing career with United, he played a record 754 games, scoring 247 goals. It is unlikely his deeds will ever be matched. Although highly coveted by clubs across the country, the young Charlton, nephew of the great Newcastle striker Jackie Milburn, turned professional with United in October 1954, winning the FA Youth Cup in 1954, 1955 and 1956.

His league debut came on 6 October 1956 against Charlton at Old Trafford and the youngster made an immediate impact, scoring twice despite carrying an injury. “Mr Busby asked me if I was ok,” recalled Sir Bobby. “I actually had a sprained ankle, but I wasn’t going to admit to it and I crossed my fingers and said ‘yes’.”

Despite his dramatic bow, Charlton didn’t command a relatively regular place until the latter stages of the 1956/57 season, notching 10 goals as the Busby Babes won a first title. Competition for a first-team spot was intense, but a hat-trick against Bolton Wanderers in January 1958 certainly helped his cause, and Busby

It seems strangely apt to ape the words of one of Liverpool’s most iconic exports to start a blog about Sir Alex Ferguson because back then Liverpool Football Club were the undisputed top dogs of English and European football. If anyone was going to challenge them for that honour it was thought to be city rivals Everton.

Nowadays, Manchester United are supreme and Manchester City are currently their chief foes for domestic silverware.

So many kind words have been said about Sir Alex that I’m not sure any tribute by a lowly blogger could add much, but I thought a retrospective on what the First Division (yes, First Division) looked like on November 6 1986 and who was managing its 22 clubs. It might help put his longevity at least into perspective. All teams had played 13 games.

1. Nottingham Forest (26 points) managed by Brian Clough

What can be said about Cloughie that hasn’t already been said. His 1986-7 side started well but couldn’t maintain the challenge eventually finishing in eighth place in the table. Clough died in 2004.

2. Arsenal (24 points) managed by George Graham

After sacking Don Howe in March 1986, Arsenal were interested in appointing Ferguson who was in temporary charge of the Scottish national team. The story goes that Alex insisted on waiting till after the World Cup and Arsenal instead opted for its former star player and then Millwall manager Graham. Graham would lead Arsenal to two League Championships, an FA Cup, two League Cups and a European Cup Winners Cup. Graham is now a pundit

3. Liverpool (23 points) player-managed by Kenny Dalglish

Dalglish had been Liverpool’s manager for just one season but what a season it was, securing the first double in the club’s history, scoring the goal that clinched the League title and beating Everton in the first all Merseyside FA Cup Final. Dalglish would manage Liverpool to two more championships and one more FA Cup victory before resigning in 1991. Twenty years later of course he would return to Anfield.

4. West Ham United (22 points) managed by John Lyall

Lyall was only West Ham’s fifth ever manager stretching back to 1901. He won two FA Cups and secured a club record best finish of 3rd the previous season. Lyall was sacked in 1989 and West Ham have had no major trophies and 13 managers since. Lyall died in 2006.

5. Norwich (22 points) managed by Ken Brown

Brown was Norwich manager for seven years, he won the League Cup in 1985 with pl as well as relegating the team from the top flight. Given the chance he piloted a return to the First Division at the first time of asking and ended the 1986/7 season in 5th place (a then record for the Canaries)

6. Everton (21 points) managed by Howard Kendall

Kendall was in his first, and by far the most successful of his three spells managing Everton. The Toffees would end up champions of England this season and Kendall remains the last English manager to win a European competition with an English club.

7. Luton Town (20 points) managed by John Moore

Moore was David Pleat’s assistant before taking his one and only managerial post in English football. The club finished 7th but he quit as he didn’t think that football management was the right career for him. Luton Town are in the Conference and play Fleetwood Town this weekend.

8. Coventry City (20 points) managed by George Curtis

Curtis retired as Coventry City’s then record appearance holder, he became the club’s Commercial Manager in 1974, Managing Director in 1983 before being made manager in 1986. He was the manager who led Coventry to FA Cup glory in 1987, alongside first team coach John Sillett.

9. Tottenham Hotspur (19 points) managed by David Pleat

Pleat’s only full season in charge of Spurs was relatively successful they finished 3rd in the League and got to the FA Cup Final, but Pleat was sacked to make way for Terry Venables. Pleat has the best record in terms of winning percentage of any post war Tottenham manager.

10. Wimbledon (19 points) managed by Dave Bassett

Harry Bassett had guided Wimbledon from the fourth tier of English football to the the First Division in just four seasons and in August the briefly topped the table. Bassett’s last job in football management was as Dennis Wise’s assistant at Leeds United in 2008.

11. Sheffield Wednesday (18 points) managed by Howard Wilkison

The last English manager to finish ahead of Sir Alex Ferguson in the league. Wilkinson is still involved in the game at Sheffield Wednesday as a director and with the League Managers Association.

12. Southampton (17 points) managed by Chris Nicholl

Southampton manager for a pretty no descript six years Nicholl currently manages the Aston Villa Old Stars charity team.

13. Queens Park Rangers (17 points) managed by Jim Smith

Jim Smith was already a journeyman manager when he joined QPR, it was his sixth club of his eventual nine club managerial career.

14. Charlton Athletic (17 points) managed by Lennie Lawrence

Lawrence had secured Charlton’s return to the top flight after a 29 year absence, despite being locked out of their home ground The Valley. Charlton would stay in the top flight until the end of the 1989-90 season.

15. Oxford United (17 points) managed by Maurice Evans

Maurice Evans and Mark Lawrenson hold the distinction of being the only two people to manage Oxford in the top flight. Evans did it for the best part of three seasons and won the League Cup, Lawrenson did it for nine games and failed to register a win. Evans died in 2000, aged 63.

16. Aston Villa (16 points) managed by Billy McNeill

McNeill achieved a rare feat in the 1986-7 season managing two sides that were relegated. He started the season at Manchester City but left to join Villa in September, come the final day of the season both were relegated.

17. Watford (15 points) managed by Graham Taylor

Taylor was approaching the end of ten years distinguished service to the Hornets after leading the club from the Fourth Division to the First in five seasons, then finishing runners up in both League and FA Cup. Watford would recover to finish ninth and Taylor would replace McNeill at Aston Villa at the end of the season. His last job in management was in 2003, again at Villa Park.

18. Leicester City (15 points) managed jointly by Gordon Milne and Bryan Hamilton

In a forerunner to the Roy Evans/Gerard Houlier debacle at Anfield, the Filbert Street board supplemented existing manager Milne with Wigan’s Bryan Hamilton. Milne as General Manager and Hamilton as Team Manager. It didn’t work. Leicester were relegated.

19. Manchester United (13 points)

20. Chelsea (13 points) managed by John Hollins

Hollins is a true Chelsea legend playing over 450 league games for club, he’d threatened to win the Championship the season before topping the table in February before a poor run of form saw the Blues finish sixth. Now Hollins is more famous as the father of BBC Breakfast sports reporter and Strictly Come Dancing champion, Chris.

21. Manchester City (9 points) managed by Jimmy Frizzell

Frizzell became the first City manager to lose a Manchester derby to Sir Alex Ferguson in March 1987 and resigned after the club were relegated.

22. Newcastle United (9 points) managed by Willie McFaul

Northern Irishman McFaull was one of the rare bread of goalkeepers turned managers and he was able to rely on the talents of a young Paul Gascoigne to drag the Toon off the foot of the table to escape the clutches of relegations.

Only one of those managers is managing at any level now, at that was Kenny Dalglish who was young enough to be a player-manager at the time. It’s a remarkable testament to Sir Alex’s longevity that he’s managing at all – let alone at the very top of his profession.

It’s also a nice quirk of fate that the current incumbents of the top four places in the Premier League were the bottom four teams in November 1986. They’ve all travelled very different paths to where they are now, between them Manchester City, Chelsea and Newcastle have used 52 different managers (including caretakers) in the 25 years that Sir Alex Ferguson has been in charge at Old Trafford.
