Ronaldo set to announce retirement

The Independent

Record-breaking Brazil striker Ronaldo is poised to announce his retirement from football.

The 34-year-old, who has enjoyed a glittering career in Spain, Holland, Italy and Brazil, has of late become a target for Corinthians fans disappointed at their side's exit from the Copa Libertadores.

He told newspaper O Estado de S. Paulo: "I want to stay but I can't. I think of a move, but I can't perform it as I want to. It's time."

He added: "My body aches. The head wants to continue, but the body can't take much more."

Ronaldo first moved to Europe in 1994 when he joined PSV Eindhoven from Cruzeiro.

A prolific scorer in the Eredivisie, he joined Barcelona despite knee problems which blighted him in his second season in Holland, going on to achieve record-breaking success in Spain.

He spent just a year at Barca, scoring 47 goals in 49 games and becoming the youngest player ever to win the FIFA World Player of the Year award, before contract wrangles saw him join Inter Milan for a then world-record fee of £19million.

His success continued at Inter, then Barca's great rivals Real Madrid, though injury problems hindered his time in Italy.

Ronaldo joined AC Milan in 2007 but after suffering a third serious knee injury he returned to Brazil in 2009.

He will perhaps be best remembered for his international exploits, having scored a record 15 World Cup goals.

He scored eight in the 2002 tournament in Japan and South Korea alone, including both goals in the 2-0 final victory over Germany.

He was also the first player to win the FIFA World Player of the Year award three times.

Ronaldo Tutup Karir Sepakbola

Beragam trofi baik bersama klub maupun gelar pribadi berhasil direngkuh.

Cedera lututnya jg yg jd penghalang kariernya dia... Tp biar gmn pun ronaldo tetaplah ronaldo...

Buat gw sih cuma ada seorang ronaldo yaitu ronaldo #9 Brazil... Meski nama aslinya bukan ronaldo kl gw ga salah hehehehe

Aq masih ingat golnya ketika masih memperkuat Barcelona . Sendirian menggiring bola dr garis tengah lapangan , gocek kiri-kanan melewati 3-4 pemain , berhadap2an dgn kiper , dan ... GOOOLLLL !!!

Lututnya sering bermasalah , coz gaya dribble nya termasuk membebani lutut dan hal tsb tidak diobati ketika Ronaldo masih belia . So , udah kayak cedera kambuhan gitu .

Pertama - tama, thx utk bro Agung yg sdh buat thread Ronaldo Retirement.

Terima kasih Ronaldo utk kenangan2 indahnya didunia sepakbola. cheers!!!

As a World Cup legend finally hangs up his boots, Sportsmail pays tribute to... the original Ronaldo
-dailymail.co.uk-

When his career began in the early 1990s there were other players called Ronaldo and two of them, a goalkeeper and a centre half, were in the Brazil squad; now his retirement has been announced in the time of another Ronaldo, the glitzy Cristiano.

Yet Ronaldo Luiz Nazario de Lima was such a footballer, such a global presence, that he became and remains the undisputed Ronaldo. It was just one of many achievements.

He hung up his boots yesterday at the age of 34 and the reaction around the world indicated just how special and important he was.

BARCELONA 1996-1997: APPS................... 49 GOALS................ 47

This space could be filled with the torrent of individual and team honours Ronaldo amassed, but the fact he won the World Cup in 2002, having been part of the Brazil squad - at 17 - that also won it eight years earlier should identify his talent.

Ronaldo was named European Footballer of the Year in 2002 to add to the title he first won aged 21 in 1997.

In 1998 Ronaldo finished third behind Zinedine Zidane and it is with the France star that Ronaldo merits bracketing.

Diego Maradona effectively ended his playing career in 1994 and, in terms of all-time players, Ronaldo and Zidane are the bridge between Maradona and Lionel Messi.

He reached this elite despite defenders, despite his body and sometimes despite himself. On July 12, 1998, he was the most famous man on the planet. A satisfying explanation of the events of the previous evening, when Ronaldo was said to have suffered something akin to an epileptic fit as Brazil prepared to meet France in the World Cup final, has never emerged.

But Ronaldo was initially not on the Brazil team sheet at the Stade de France; then suddenly he was. France triumphed and the Brazilian Football Federation was accused of selling itself to sponsors Nike.

Ronaldo appeared in front of Brazil’s parliament to give his version. He played down the JFK-type intrigue.

But because of that, four years later in Japan, when Ronaldo guided in the goals that defeated Germany in the final, the World Cup was again absorbed by the striker born into poverty in Rio de Janeiro, whose father sold his son’s negotiating rights to three agents.

Ronaldo’s redemption became the theme of the tournament. The agents ensured he moved around, too. But they did OK: Ronaldo retires with Barcelona, Real Madrid, Inter Milan and AC Milan on his cv.

Four years later in Germany, he broke Gerd Muller’s scoring record by reaching 15 World Cup goals. But Brazil were again beaten by France and Ronaldo, 29, never again played for the national side. He had acquired the nickname O Fenomeno and his Brazil scoring record was phenomenal: 62 goals in 97 appearances.

It was usually that way. At his first major club, Cruzeiro, at 16 Ronaldo scored 44 goals in 44 games. When he first came to Europe at PSV Eindhoven there were 54 in 57.

Bobby Robson then persuaded Barcelona to break their transfer record and Robson later recalled: ‘In my year coaching Barcelona I had the world’s best player.’

Robson went as far to say ‘as good as Pele’, adding: ‘Ronaldo could beat opponents
just like George Best. He reminded me of Diego Maradona the way he went past defenders. He was beautifully built, big but not muscle-bound.

‘Romario was lightning-quick over 10 metres but this boy could sustain his pace for 50.’

Marcello Lippi, who managed Ronaldo at Inter, emphasised that Ronaldo was always double-marked.

Real Madrid great Emilio Butragueno said Ronaldo could ‘create a goal opportunity where it does not exist’.

http://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2011/02/14/article-1357044-0052C70800000258-436_634x504.jpg

AND FOR BRAZIL: APPEARANCES..........................97 GOALS.......................................62
HONOURS: World Cup 1994, 2002; Copa America 1997, 1999; Confederations Cup 1997; Olympic bronze medal 1996.

The exceptional, ugly, beautiful, instinctive toepoke (above) summoned from nothing to win the World Cup semi-final against Turkey in 2002 encapsulated Ronaldo.

Older footage shows the slimline physique of the young Ronaldo whom Robson, and Jose Mourinho, adored.

But serious knee injuries took their toll, as did Ronaldo’s verdant lifestyle, and by 2006 he was ‘fat Ronaldo’, to differentiate him from the rising Cristiano.

‘I’ve lost the struggle against my body,’ Ronaldo explained on Monday. His last club were Corinthians.

That name is appropriate. Old Trafford understood the undisputed Ronaldo. The ovation it gave him following his Real hat-trick there against Manchester United in 2003 was stirring. And the memory of it yesterday was also appropriate.

Ronaldo mucul terlebih dahulu. Bersama PSV Eindhoven ia mulai mendapat perhatian dunia sebelum karirnya mencuat bersama Barcelona di akhir era 90an.

Aksi Konyol Anak Ronaldo
Muchamad Syuhada - Okezone

(hmr)

The Superstar at Play

Ronaldo wasn't the greatest of all time, but he made soccer look like unbelievable fun.

http://i682.photobucket.com/albums/vv189/zudomiriku/zudo%20II/110214_SNUT_ronaldoTN.jpg

When you look back on it, 1994 was a transformative year for soccer, one of those moments when the game's history briefly shows its seams. It was the year Maradona was sent home from the World Cup, fuming and wretched after a positive doping test, and began his long slide into freakish post-relevance. David Beckham played his first important match for Manchester United, giving the world a hint of the paparazzi hurricanes to come. Zinedine Zidane, in his first match for France, scored twice off the bench and glowered like something out of Michelangelo. And in the Netherlands, PSV welcomed a 17-year-old Brazilian striker named Ronaldo, who'd played all of 14 matches the previous year for Cruzeiro—he scored 12 goals—and who had spent the entirety of the just-completed World Cup sitting on the seleção bench.

That first season in Dutch football, Ronaldo scored 30 goals in 33 matches and lit up European soccer. It can be hard to remember this now, but Ronaldo, who announced his retirement on Monday at the battered old age of 34, was an absolute joy of a kid. Zidane was more hawk than man from the start, and Beckham was more mannequin. But Ronaldo, with his big, blunt head, his toothy grin, and his improbably soft eyes, looked less like a world-class athlete than a gawky adolescent—which he was. He was impossibly fast, impossibly strong, and scored goals in every way imaginable. He'd barrel right at defenders, throwing whole back lines into confusion, then slip through the gaps he had made like a needle disappearing into cloth
In his second season with PSV, the first of what would be many season-limiting injuries held him to 12 goals in 13 matches. The next year, 1996-97, he moved to Barcelona and turned in one of the great individual seasons in soccer history, scoring 47 in 49 and prompting iron-headed defenders everywhere to declare, generally from on their backs, that he was simply unguardable. At 20, he won his first FIFA World Player of the Year award. It was around then that the "potential to be the greatest of all time" murmurs started, murmurs that laid the groundwork for the future murmurs—you know how sports writing works—that his subsequent career was somehow a disappointment. That's the narrative that's now quietly written all over his retirement eulogies.

As a media figure, Ronaldo was never cool in the ruthless-visionary way of Zidane or in the lost-album-cover manner of Beckham. He seemed affable, funny, a little ingenuous, a little strange. Those qualities made him human, but they also made him a terrible fit for modern sports journalism, which knows how to handle only one kind of superstar—the kind who is entirely focused on being one. (That is, the kind of superstar who uses the media back.) It's impossible to read the details of someone else's experience, of course, but Ronaldo never quite seemed like he knew what to do with the cameras. They didn't bother him, exactly; they were just more or less there.

He never learned to control his own image and never seemed to think doing so was part of his job. And so, since he never shook his injury troubles, never repeated that first season at Barcelona, and never, despite many brilliant seasons, fulfilled his "greatest of all time" potential to the satisfaction of the sort of people who say those things—it was probably inevitable that his eccentricities would someday overshadow his accomplishments. Over the years, Ronaldo somehow contrived to become the leading scorer in World Cup history, to become, with Zidane, the defining player of his generation, and yet, simultaneously, to become a joke. The mystery seizure before the 1998 World Cup final, the weight gain—when Cristiano Ronaldo appeared on the scene, bloggers started calling the Brazilian "Fat Ronaldo" to distinguish him from the young Portuguese star. When he made bizarre headlines for picking up, then fighting with, a group of transvestite prostitutes—"Ronaldo said he is not good in the head," one of them sighed afterward—the sniggering was audible everywhere in the world.

And so, in the retirement stories, you get bizarre summations like this one, from Paul Wilson's oddly half-hearted Guardian write-up: "His career choices may not have been ideal, his lifestyle questionable and his fitness, particularly his knees, suspect throughout, but in spite of all that Ronaldo deserves to be remembered as a remarkable player." In spite of being the person who became a remarkable player, Ronaldo deserves to be remembered as a remarkable player. This is where you can either stay alive to what's wonderful about sports or give up and admit you see players as oil wells. Ronaldo isn't a quantifiable reserve of potential that was never efficiently tapped or a set of character traits that never reliably pumped out his natural talent. He's a person, the interface of whose personality with the world produced some breathtaking moments in a game.

Ronaldo's 1996-97 season with Barcelona was the sort of event in sports that you simply can't count on witnessing. Rather than lamenting that it didn't happen again, we should be marveling that it happened in the first place. Is it worth pointing out, too, that Ronaldo's so-called decline wasn't exactly the stuff of horror? He won a World Cup in 2002, scoring eight goals along the way; won two La Liga titles with Real Madrid; netted hundreds of goals; successfully retooled his game after twice rupturing a tendon in his knee; picked up two more FIFA World Player of the Year awards; and, after moving back to Brazil in the twilight of his career, won two trophies with Corinthians in 2009. I wish more athletes were such comprehensive failures.

What I loved most about watching Ronaldo was that—quite possibly because of the same vague goofiness that made him into a laughingstock—he never stopped playing like the game was just unbelievable fun. Two of my favorite Ronaldo moments came in games that had nothing, or very little, to do with the grim task of beating the competition. The first is the jaw-dropping goal he scored at a charity match in 2002. He and his Real Madrid teammate Raul pirouette in tandem through the entire defense, Raul plays the final pass just behind Ronaldo, and Ronaldo—casually, as if he did this sort of thing all the time—flips the ball up over his body with his heel, controls it with his chest, and slices it into the back of the net past the diving goalkeeper's hands.

My other favorite moment came in 2008. Ronaldo, now very much in his dotage as a high-level player, made a rare start for A.C. Milan after a season of injuries. The game, against Napoli, was notable for marking the debut of the hotly touted 17-year-old Brazilian striker Alexandre Pato. Ronaldo, visibly delighted to be playing in Pato's first match—and can you imagine, say, Michael Jordan being visibly delighted in those circumstances?—scored twice himself, including the match-winning goal, then spent the rest of the game trying to get Pato on the score sheet, urging the kid along, bounding around the pitch like he thought he was 17, too. When Pato finally scored, it wasn't clear which of them was happier.

Remarkably, it's that same feeling of exhilaration that comes across in the astonishing video of all his goals from the miracle year with Barcelona, as if he'd made the competitive aspect of the game secondary to pure play. Beckham made the game feel like a spy movie; Zidane made it feel like a war. Ronaldo made it feel like joy.

Ronaldo: The Phenomenon's Top 10 Moments

http://i682.photobucket.com/albums/vv189/zudomiriku/zudo%20II/891575_display_image.jpg

One of the best footballers of all time is ready to say goodbye.

Ronaldo Luís Nazário de Lima, Il Fenomeno, will announce today his retirement after an 18-year career in which he played for six teams, won two World Cups and was three times the best player of the year, among many other accolades.

Despite being hampered by many injuries, Ronaldo gave us many great moments. Here is a recollection of some of his best.

10. United States, 1994
http://i682.photobucket.com/albums/vv189/zudomiriku/zudo%20II/ronaldo-brazil1994_display_image.gif

Just one year after his professional debut with Cruzeiro, a 17-year-old Ronaldo was included in the Brazilian squad for the 1994 World Cup in the United States.

He didn't play in this tournament, but hey, he was part of a world champion squad as a teenager. That definitely counts as a big moment in his career.

9. His Last Titles with Corinthians
http://i682.photobucket.com/albums/vv189/zudomiriku/zudo%20II/ronaldo-copadobrasil2009_display_image.jpg

After being released by AC Milan due to his recurring injuries, Ronaldo signed with Corinthians in December of 2008, a very controversial move, as in the previous months he had been training with Corinthians rivals Flamengo, the team he had been a fan of as a child.

Anyway, he made the right choice. Just months after his arrival he won the last titles of his career, the Campeonato Paulista and the Copa do Brasil.

8. FIFA World Player of the Year, 1996
Despite an injury-shortened season with PSV, Ronaldo managed to average almost one goal per game with the Dutch team and then with Barcelona in 1996. That year, he won the Dutch Cup before being transferred to the Catalan side for a then-record amount of $17 million.

He became the youngest player ever to win the FIFA World Player of the Year award and was runner-up in the voting for the Ballon d'Or

7. FIFA World Player of the Year, 1997
http://i682.photobucket.com/albums/vv189/zudomiriku/zudo%20II/1620494_display_image.jpg

If anybody had doubts about Ronaldo being the best player in the world in the previous year, the Brazilian striker made sure nobody would question him in 1997.

He finished his one-year stint with Barcelona scoring 47 goals in 49 official games, helping Los Culés to win the UEFA Cup Winners Cup and the Copa del Rey before leaving for Internazionale Milano.

6. Intercontinental Champion in 2002
http://i682.photobucket.com/albums/vv189/zudomiriku/zudo%20II/1672990_display_image.jpg

Ronaldo never won the UEFA Champions League, but he did won one Intercontinental Cup with Real Madrid, also in that marvelous 2002 year.

He scored the first goal in the 2-0 victory over Paraguayan Olimpia and was named Man of the Match. A few days later he got his third FIFA World Player of the Year award.

5. Magical Debut with Real Madrid
After five years in the Serie A, Ronaldo signed with Real Madrid for the 2002-03 season, but he had to wait almost two months to make his debut due to an injury.

He made up for the time lost in his first appearance in La Liga, coming off the bench against Alavés on Oct. 6. He scored his first goal just 60 seconds after entering the field and added a second 14 minutes later. Real Madrid won 5-2.

At the final whistle, the striker walked off to a standing ovation from the crowd of 75,000 at Santiago Bernabéu Stadium.

4. League Champion for the First Time
http://i682.photobucket.com/albums/vv189/zudomiriku/zudo%20II/2000683_display_image.jpg

It's hard to believe it, but Ronaldo had to wait 10 years since his debut to win his first league championship.

Real Madrid had chased Real Sociedad for most of the season, finally taking over the lead in Week 37 thanks to a 4-0 victory against Atlético Madrid in the Vicente Calderón stadium combined with Real Sociedad's 3-2 defeat at Celta de Vigo.

In the last round of the league, Ronaldo scored two goals to lead Real Madrid's 3-1 victory over Athletic Bilbao, good for Los Merengues' 29th league title.

Technically, Ronaldo was part of the 2006-07 Real Madrid squad that won the league, but he had left to sign with AC Milan in the winter transfer market.

3. 15th Goal in World Cups
With this goal against Ghana in the Germany 2006 Round of 16, Ronaldo reached 15 in World Cups to break Gerd Muller's record.

It was also the last goal for Ronaldo with the verdeamarelha. Four days later, Brazil lost against France in the quarterfinals, and Il Fenomeno never played for his national team again. He finished his international career with 62 goals in 97 caps.

2. That Goal Against Compostela
E774yQX6uQ

Oct. 2, 1996. That was probably the day the world became aware Ronaldo was already the best player in the world.

He had an excellent performance against Compostela, scoring three and giving one assist, but the highlight of the night was his second goal of the night, probably the most iconic image of him on the field.

1. Korea-Japan, 2002
http://i682.photobucket.com/albums/vv189/zudomiriku/zudo%20II/891938_display_image.jpg

Four years after his collapse in the final of France 1998, Ronaldo and Brazil returned for payback against Germany in Yokohama.

This time there was no backstage drama. Ronaldo played at his best, scoring twice to lead Brazil to their fifth world title.

Ronaldo will definitely be remembered as one of the best of all time. All we can say is thank you, goodbye and good luck in whatever you decide to do after football.

(foti/mac)

Ronaldo Bantu Penyelenggaraan Piala Dunia 2014

Ronaldo Kenakan Popok Saat Bermain

Namun meski memendam rasa malu, kualitas Ronaldo tidaklah sanggup dibendung.

(arp/krs)

Ronaldo Pensiun, Presiden Brasil Ikut Berkomentar

Karir Ronaldo semasa masih aktif terbilang penuh warna.

Ronaldo Bicara Tentang Rivalitas Madrid-Barca

(ant/row)

Ronaldo hangs up boots, puts on suit
by Vincent Bevins

What should super-star athletes do after they retire? That depends on their personal interests but also the economic opportunities available to them.

Brazilian footballer Ronaldo, who explains his decision to found a sports marketing company in an interview in today’s FT, has chosen one of the fastest-growing sectors in his country’s booming economy.

Brazil’s growth is being powered by consumer spending and the advertising market is hot. WPP Group – which holds a 45 per cent stake in Ronaldo’s São Paulo-based company, 9ine – expects growth of 9.5 per cent this year for marketing revenues. Brazilian agencies have a reputation for excellence, and a scramble last year among foreign groups for those agencies still available for takeover led them to pay very steep prices.

And with Brazil set to host the World Cup in 2014 and the Olympics in 2016, sports may be one of the sweetest corners of the industry.

“We’re very excited. We’re going to do planning and marketing for big companies and manage the images of athletes,” says Ronaldo, whose agency will deal with a range of sports. “In the next few years all companies will be doing campaigns with football. We already have relationships with the brands that invest the most, and with lots of potential clients. And those who are outside this world right now, we can create content for them.”

WPP Group is already the market leader in Brazil, and Sir Martin Sorrell, WPP’s CEO, thinks Ronaldo gives the agency a personal connection which is important in Brazil. “You’re going to do great things,” Sorrell told Ronaldo at his hotel in London, seemingly just as excited about being able to hang out with the football star for a day as he was about explaining the business venture.

Since Ronaldo is new to this side of the business, his star power is probably his biggest gift to the newest ad house on the block – so far, at least, some of Brazil’s most powerful business people have jumped at the chance to meet a national sporting idol.

But Marcus Buaiz, 9ine’s executive director, says the company is also benefiting from getting a head start and going straight for the sports market.

“We have confidence in Ronaldo’s work and his image, and we’re talking now about what should happen for the World Cup, what we can do,” he says. “No one here has spent enough time yet worrying about marketing in sports. People have just been investing where they thought they had to. No one was doing enough planning. We’re going to companies now trying to get ready for 2014.”

Contracts have been signed with athletes and GlaxoSmithKline, and Buaiz says Sony has approached them for meetings, and that they seek to work with Nestlé, too.

“There are very few live events that have audiences of significant size,” says Sorrell. There’s a pool of money that chases these live events, despite difficulties. Why are ad costs going up at the Super Bowl despite economic problems in the US? For this reason.”

Of course, it may or may not turn out that Ronaldo is good in his new role. Athletes taking on new ventures have no guarantee of success. But he couldn’t have chosen a much better place to move into marketing.

Robinho: Ronaldo Selalu Idola Saya

"Ia selalu menjadi idola saya.

Ronaldo Mainkan Laga Terakhir Tanpa Gol
Doni Wahyudi - detiksport

Yes, he may be carrying a bit of extra lumber around with him these days but, as far as we’re concerned, Senhor Luis Nazario de Lima has just about earned himself the right to do anything he damn well likes over the years – and we’re happily including perjury, high-treason and murder in that.

Anyway, we defy you to argue that those shorts aren’t the most distressing thing about these photos….

Ronaldo: Bercinta Sebelum Bertanding Tak Pengaruhi Performa

(sprt/mac)

Retired Ronaldo warns self pleasure more tiring than sex

http://i682.photobucket.com/albums/vv189/zudomiriku/zudo%20II/retired_ronaldo_warns_self_pleasure_more_tiring_th an_sex.jpg

For as long as people want to talk about athletes having sex, there will be debate as to whether having it before a game is good or bad. During the last World Cup, Argentina's team doctor made it clear that sex in itself isn't harmful and wasn't a big deal during the tournament. But now, one of the world's experts on such matters, Ronaldo, has offered his opinion on the matter and highlighted a problem with the alternative to sex (with another person) that few seem to consider.

Said the retired legend (via Mundo Deportivo):

"It's not true that sex is detrimental to performance [on the pitch]. Masturbation is more tiring."

I guess that depends on technique in both fields (or lack thereof), but maybe this was a key to Ronaldo's greatness on the pitch. Instead of exerting himself, he would just have someone else come by and do sex to him. Of course, that strategy can lead to a whole different set of problems and surprises.

Ronaldo ke Paris Saint-Germain

http://klimg.com/bola.net/library/p/headline/0000065540.jpg

Ronaldo vs. Cristiano Ronaldo: Why the Brazilian Wins Every Time

http://i682.photobucket.com/albums/vv189/zudomiriku/zudo%20II/zudo%20III/52740155_crop_650x440.jpg

When Cristiano Ronaldo walked out onto the field of the Santiago Bernabeu on July 6th, it was difficult to differentiate between him and the Brazilian who once wore the famous white of Real Madrid.

Both players were identical on paper: the name 'Ronaldo' supported by the No. 9, and, of course, the expectation that spawned from the enormous transfer fees that brought them to Madrid.

There can be no denying the Brazilian's extraordinary playing ability. Perhaps the finest goal scorer of his generation; one which included Thierry Henry, Andriy Shevchenko and Raul Gonzalez. His phenomenal adaptability to continue his exploits in front of goal no matter which league he played in should be endlessly admired.

While Cristiano Ronaldo possesses an equally impressive list of personal and club achievements, he may never have that same effect that the Brazilian had on the international stage. A leading scorer in World Cup finals and one who has scored in three World Cup competitions, he set an extremely high bar if the Portuguese is ever to emulate that record.

What is interesting to note about Ronaldo's playing career is the injuries he picked up. There's every reason to believe that Ronaldo was not performing at his maximum ability due to the injuries he had in his career.

Yet, judging by his records prior to his move to Inter Milan, he could have further enhanced his glowing reputation had he been able to avoid these injuries. Had it not been for the lengthy spell on the sidelines in Italy, could we be looking at perhaps the greatest footballer of all time?

The Portuguese flyer still has many years of playing at the top level ahead of him. He has been at the centre of the football world's focus for a number of years due to his duelling with Lionel Messi for top spot amongst footballers.

He was brought into Florentino Perez' second assembly of The Galacticos as the foremost star, one who would propel Madrid into first place in Spain and Europe and, in turn, above fierce rivals Barcelona.

He is equally able to capture the magic of his namesake; stunning strikes in both the English league as well as the Spanish have earned him rightful praise as one of the most complete forwards in football. His stunning ability in the air, from set pieces and as one to assist others have been trademarks of his ability as one of the world's elite athletes, and yet, sadly for him, he still manages to fall short against his closest rival, Lionel Messi.

Is a comparison of the two Ronaldos a fair one?

They have both been icons for their generation as footballers. They, whilst playing at the top of their game, won almost everything there is to win in football—the Champions League being the only title that has eluded the Brazilian, just as the World Cup may be out of reach for the Portuguese.

However, for now, Ronaldo Luis Nazario de Lima remains the standout figure among the two.

Maybe in time, Cristiano Ronaldo will equal that of the Brazilian and we can look back and assess both players' careers once Ronaldo's time has come to an end. But at this moment, we can, and should, look to one of the greatest footballers to ever emerge from the breathtaking factory that is Brazilian football.

Ronaldo Ingin Jadi Ketua CBF

Bola.net - Mantan pemain bintang sepak bola Brasil, Ronaldo, anggota panitia pelaksana Piala Dunia 2014, Senin menyatakan keinginannya menjadi ketua federasi sepak bola Brasil (CBF).

(afp/lex)

Ronaldo: Madrid atau Barca Juara Liga Champions
Hery Prasetyo

http://assets.kompas.com/data/photo/2012/04/06/1016033620X310.jpg

Ronaldo, a phenomenon in every sense

The 24-year wait was over. In the final act of the 1994 FIFA World Cup USA™, Brazil overcame Italy in a typically nerve-wracking penalty shoot-out in Pasadena to become world champions for the first time since Mexico 1970.

The celebrating Brazilians carried flags as they ran around the pitch, one of them in tribute to Formula One driver Ayrton Senna, killed at Imola just a few weeks earlier. Photographers massed around them as the famous Trophy was passed from player to player, with Romario, captain Dunga and goalkeeper Taffarel among those attracting most of the attention.

In the midst of the celebrations was a 17-year-old with a gap-toothed grin, a mere onlooker in the winning of Brazil’s fourth world crown but who would go on to have a brilliant career and become, despite the injuries that would plague him, one of the most feared finishers in the business, fully justifying his nickname of O Fenômeno.

That wide-eyed teenager went by the name of Ronaldo Luis Nazario de Lima, and by the time he retired from the game in 2011, 17 years after that sun-kissed Californian afternoon, he had helped his country win another FIFA World Cup and secured an individual goalscoring record for the competition, just two of his many career achievements.

A global sensation
Unlike fellow Brazilian legends such as Pele, Ronaldo played in an age where every dribble and wonder goal was recorded for posterity, few more wondrous than the solo effort he scored for Barcelona against Santiago de Compostela in a La Liga game in October 1996. Picking up the ball on the halfway line, he weaved his way past several Compostela defenders and surged into the box to slot home from 12 yards.

Beginning his career as an amateur with Sao Cristovao in Rio de Janeiro, Ronaldo signed professional forms with Cruzeiro at the age of 16 and then made the switch to PSV Eindhoven, shortly before USA 1994. Instant international stardom would follow when he joined Barça, where he kept up the remarkable scoring record of nearly a goal a game that he had achieved with both PSV and A Raposa.

It was around the time that he won his first FIFA World Player award in 1996 that the nickname O Fenômeno was coined, one that would stick with him for the rest of his playing days. When relations with Barcelona soured he joined Internazionale, where he continued to star, winning his second consecutive FIFA World Player title and following up with success in the UEFA Cup in 1998.

The stage seemed set for the 21-year-old at France 1998. But after opening his FIFA World Cup account with four goals on Brazil’s march to the Final, he suffered convulsions in the build-up to the showpiece game against the French and was a shadow of himself as Zinedine Zidane inspired the hosts to glory.

That ailment was only the first in a series of physical problems that befell the thoroughbred striker in the years that followed. Those setbacks included two serious knee injuries, the second of them coming in a fateful Coppa Italia match against Lazio. The sight of a stricken Ronaldo clutching his leg after crumpling to the ground in agony would unfortunately prove one of the enduring images of his career.

The comeback trail
Out of the game for 15 months after undergoing surgery, Ronaldo made a remarkable return, arriving at Korea/Japan 2002 determined to make up for that catastrophic night in Paris four years earlier. Forming part of a formidable frontline with Ronaldinho and Rivaldo, he added eight goals to his overall tournament tally as Brazil stormed to world title number five. His reward for his staggering personal contribution was a third FIFA World Player award.

Though his injury woes made it seem like more, Ronaldo was still only 26 when he signed for Real Madrid in the wake of his oriental triumph. He spent the next five years at the Bernabeu, teaming up to great effect alongside fellow galácticos such as Roberto Carlos, Zidane, Raul and Luis Figo.

His final FIFA World Cup appearance came at Germany 2006, where he took his competition haul to a record-breaking 15 goals before Zizou’s France undid Brazil once again, this time in the quarter-finals.

There followed a brief spell with AC Milan, which ended with yet another serious knee injury and a return to Brazil. Sparing no effort after working his way back to fitness, with several major European clubs keeping tabs on his progress, he surprised everyone by making a last-minute decision to sign for Corinthians. Welcomed with open arms by the Timão faithful, he proceeded to do what he did best, scoring more great goals and getting his hands on yet more silverware.

By this stage, however, the demands and sacrifices of the past had caught up with him. Finally calling time on his career in February 2011, O Fenômeno announced: “My body’s beaten me. It’s been a wonderful, successful and exciting career. I’ve suffered a lot of defeats and won countless victories.”

Aside from all the goals and the accolades, that ability to face and overcome adversity time and again is perhaps the greatest achievement of a player who was truly a phenomenon.

Ronaldo: Brazil can be world champions

Now 35 years of age, there is little that has not already been said about Brazilian superstar Ronaldo. Indeed, the lethal goalgetter’s achievements speak volumes, with O Fenômeno the all-time leading scorer in FIFA World Cup™ history, the proud owner of two FIFA World Cup winners’ medals, a three-time FIFA World Player and two-time Ballon d’Or winner.

Having overcome adversity aplenty - particularly in the form of a series of long-term knee injuries - in order to write his name large in the annals of world football, the prolific former front-man is currently a member of the Management Board of the 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil Local Organising Committee (LOC).

Taking time out from his busy role, the man who plundered goals aplenty for the likes of PSV Eindhoven, Barcelona, Inter Milan and Real Madrid spoke to FIFA.com on issues including his glittering career, the pressure on today’s Seleção and their chances of success in 2014.

FIFA.com: As part of the Brazil 2014 LOC, what are your expectations for the tournament?
Ronaldo: We’re very proud to be hosting the World Cup in Brazil. We’re going to have a great opportunity for growth, which is what’s most important for the population as a whole, because there’ll be huge investment in infrastructure, airports, motorways, hospitals and hotels. There’ll be a legacy that will remain for the rest of our lives, one that only a World Cup can provide.

How ready do you think A Seleção are for the tournament?
There’s been a generational overhaul in the national squad, which definitely isn’t playing its best football yet. And I think it’s going to take more time still for it to peak. But between now and 2014 there’s time to find a good level of consistency, competitiveness and become capable of being crowned champions.

Neymar, Alexandre Pato and Ganso would appear to be the standout players of this new Brazilian generation. What’s your verdict on this trio?
They’re three very young and very talented Brazilians who are shining for their clubs. I think Neymar is the most gifted and, at just 19 years of age, he’s already got incredible ability. He scores loads of goals and has won Brazil over. The international experience he had against Barcelona wasn’t a good one, but I’m sure it’ll have taught him a lot. Pato, for his part, has already proven his talent in Europe, while Ganso is also very good – he just needs better luck with injuries.

"Leandro Damiao [would be 'the new Ronaldo']. He’s tall, strong, a very good goalscorer, a threat in the air and skilful with both feet."
[I]Brazilian legend Ronaldo names his successor

Do you think there’s still room for experienced performers such as Ronaldinho or Kaka?
They’re important players, of course. In terms of their role out on the pitch, it’ll depend on their form and if they’re playing their best football once the World Cup comes around. But they’ve also got an important role off the pitch, and their experience will be vital in a squad of such young players.

Where would you rank the current Brazil side in global terms?
We’re not in the top three right now, but I do think we’re among the world’s top five national teams, even though we’re not on fire at the moment. Making changes is never easy and these new young players need time to mature. There’s no need to panic, they must be given time to get good results.

If you had to pick out one player to tag as ‘the new Ronaldo’, who would it be?
Leandro Damiao, from Internacional de Porto Alegre. He’s tall, strong, a very good goalscorer, a threat in the air and skilful with both feet. He’ll play a big part in 2014.

Let's look back at your own playing days. You played in Brazil, Spain and Italy, so where would you say are the fans most passionate?
I think that they’re all football-mad countries, though they enjoy the game in different ways. In Brazil the stadiums are very old and in a lot of them the fans have to stand, and support their team by jumping up and down and breaking a sweat. Aside from the heat, it’s not as formal as in Europe and the atmosphere’s more passionate. In Europe, even though it’s colder, the spectators also really make their presence felt, particularly in big derbies, which are a great spectacle.

Based on your own experience, how would you compare European and Brazilian club football?
The European game continues to be faster, more competitive and harder-fought than in Brazil, where it’s still in our culture to play a slower and more controlled style of football. The game has changed everywhere and that’s something we’ve got to get to grips with. I think that the standard in Europe is better than anywhere else. However, I think that once the World Cup is over, and thanks to the new stadiums and improved infrastructure, this change will take place in Brazil too.

Of all the teams you’ve played for, which have remained closest to your heart?
I look back at my time at Real Madrid with a lot of affection, I think it was the best period of my career. I also really enjoyed it at Inter, I fell in love with the team and the city of Milan. But wherever I played I made a lot of friends and had a great time.

Looking back at your early career, how important was it for you to travel to USA 1994 at just 17 years of age?
It was very important. Seeing players of the calibre of Romario and Bebeto up close had a real impact on my future. I was able to learn from them, look out for the small details, how they trained, how they found their focus. Romario used to boss me about, getting me to fetch his boots and his coffee, as if I was a youth-team player! But he’d always treat me with respect, that was just the pecking order in the side.

"I’d go with Taffarel; Cafu, Aldair, Lucio, Roberto Carlos; Junior, Zico, Rivelino; Pele, Romario and me, of course!"
Ronaldo names his all-time Brazil XI

By France 1998 you had made a starting berth your own, though the team went on to lose in the Final against the hosts. What feelings does that experience stir in you?
I’ve got very good memories of 1998. We had a spectacular World Cup until the Final, when we played really poorly against France. But I prefer to remember the atmosphere that day. I tried to play well in that match, we all did, but it’s very tough to play a World Cup Final against the host nation, particularly when [Zinedine] Zidane is enjoying an inspired evening. Later on when we were team-mates he’d wind me up about that, but of course I got my own back in 2002, when we won the title and they went home after the first round.

Tell us more about your experiences at Korea/Japan 2002…
I got injured and there were doubts as to whether I’d be ready in time. But as soon as I started playing our warm-up friendlies I knew we were going to have a great World Cup. We had a really top side, which was very solid, very united and ended up being very effective. That was the best Brazil team I played in; we had quality to spare in every area. Moreover, it’s my greatest memory, because you simply can’t describe what it’s like to win a World Cup.

Coming back to the present day, which team do you like most at the moment?
I’m Merengue and I really like the way Madrid are playing, but you can’t ignore Barcelona, who have a fantastic team. They may not be the most spectacular, but they make everything look so simple. Every single player in every area of the side knows what they have to do at any given time, then you’ve got their ability to keep hold of the ball and the way they patiently work their way towards the opposition goal. The great job that [Pep] Guardiola’s done shines through: it’s one of the best teams I’ve seen in my 35 years on the planet. It hurts to say that, since I’m Madridista, but I still think we can pip them to some titles this year.

When you see them play, does it make you want to slip your boots on once more?
No, no! (laughs) I enjoyed my time as a player and now I’m enjoying myself as a fan.

Finally, which players would be included in your all-time Brazil XI?
That’s a tough one, but I’d go with Taffarel; Cafu, Aldair, Lucio, Roberto Carlos; Junior, Zico, Rivelino; Pele, Romario and me, of course! It’s a very attacking team! Everyone would be bombing forward! (laughs)

Ronaldo: Ronaldinho dan Flamengo Pecundang
Hery Prasetyo

Diminta tanggapannya soal kasus Ronaldinho, Ronaldo mengatakan, "Ini sangat buruk buat kedua pihak.

Namun, bukannya menegur, Nunez justru mengatakan, "Dia (Ronaldo) hanya berumur 20 tahun. Apakah dia tidak boleh bersenang-senang?"

Ronaldo pernah melanglang Eropa.

'Real Madrid shut his mouth for me': Ronaldo has hit back at Fergie's 'fat' jibe

"A professional of his age, an English Sir, should not be so disrespectful. It was not classy," says the Brazilian

Ronaldo has hit back at Sir Alex Ferguson for his "lack of respect" after his fat jibe.

And the Brazilian said he hoped Manchester United now lose every match.

The Scot made a jokey reference to "the fat, old one" when asked to compare the two Ronaldos before United's Champions League tie with Real Madrid.

But the former World Player of the Year, now 36 and retired, was not amused.

"Real Madrid shut his mouth for me," Ronaldo said. "It was a lack of respect. A professional of his age, an English Sir, should not be so disrespectful. It was not classy."

The former Real Madrid star, who had to retire in 2011 because of injury and weight problems, has since lost over two stones on a Brazilian reality TV show.

Ronaldo, now an ambassador for the 2014 World Cup, added: "I have no words for this gentleman, except that I hope the team he manages always loses."

Brazilian football hero Ronaldo has decided that after getting back to fitness he needs a new challenge - and quite fancies himself battling the world's best-ranked pound-for-pound boxer Floyd Mayweather or MMA legend Anderson Silva,

Ronaldo, a three-time FIFA World Player of the Year, retired from playing back in 2011 following an illustrious career during which time he had battled a number of serious injuries.

He has since battled hypothyroidism and subsequent weight gain - something which he also battled during his career.

But the 37-year-old has recently been hitting the ring in a bid to shed the pounds once again - while he's also been spotted out and about shopping in the healthy aisles.

And apparently the ex-Barcelona, Inter Milan and Real Madrid star has developed the taste for scrapping - taking to Instagram to challenge Mayweather, Silva and former UFC Heavyweight champion Junior dos Santos.

He commented: "Me preparando pra vcs , @spiderandersonsilva @jdscigano @floydmayweather get ready!"

“I’m preparing for Anderson Silva, Junior dos Santos and Floyd Mayweather – get ready!”

Akhirnya rekor Ronaldo terpecahkan :)

Ronaldo Rela Rekor Direbut Klose

"Ketika ia menyeimbangkan rekor saya melawan Ghana, saya memberikan selamat melalui Twitter.

(gl/rer)
