MANCHESTER UNITED 2

SUNDERLAND 2

Res: United 2 S'land 2

Joshua King secured a point for United's Reserves in a thrilling encounter with Sunderland, after Bebe's superb opener had been overturned by the impressive visitors.

Warren Joyce’s side were offered a stern examination by the energetic young visitors, but a point was the least United deserved for bossing the second half, and only sterling work from Black Cats goalkeeper Ben Wilson denied Ravel Morrison a late winner.

United should have gone ahead within 30 seconds as Ryan Tunnicliffe released King with a measured lob but, after twice shimmying past defenders, the Norwegian striker blazed his finish over the bar.

With the tone set for a lively first half, Sunderland took just four minutes to spurn a clear chance of their own, as Craig Lynch scuffed a shot past Conor Devlin’s far post after a fortunate ricochet.

Lynch hit the target with his next effort, but could only curl tamely into Devlin’s midriff from another inviting position. Within long, his pair of misses would prove costly as United moved into the lead.

Bebe played in Gabriel Obertan behind the Sunderland defence and, when the Frenchman pulled the ball back to the edge of the area, the Portuguese winger steered an unerring finish into the far corner to put the hosts ahead in style.

Sunderland took just six minutes to level, however, in comparatively unspectacular fashion. A right-wing free-kick was only partially cleared, and in the ensuing passage of play Louis Laing’s volley was cruelly deflected past Devlin by the helpless Scott Wootton.

The equaliser injected confidence into the visitors’ performance, and they dictated play in the following exchanges without forging any clear openings. On the counter, Obertan broke at speed before hammering a shot over from just inside the area, while Bebe dragged another effort wide of the far post.

The game’s equilibrium was restored during the remainder of the first period, but it was United who bossed the opening to the second half. Morrison followed up some neat trickery by firing into the side netting, while Norwood smashed a shot out of the ground when he might well have found the target from the edge of the area.

Against the run of play, however, Sunderland took the lead for the first time. Hesitant defending from United allowed Jordan Cook to release Billy Knott with a gentle flick, and the midfielder hammered a first-time shot past the exposed Devlin from just inside the area.

Having moved ahead, the vibrant young visitors were lifted once more, and finding a route back into the game would be no easy feat for Warren Joyce’s side. Obertan dwelled too long before having a shot blocked in a rare opening, but United’s closest flirtation with an equaliser came when goalkeeper Wilson denied two substitutes in quick succession.

The visiting stopper did well to parry Davide Petrucci’s thunderbolt around the post, and then excelled himself by turning Paul Pogba’s deflected curler past the same upright. That double save prompted a sustained spell of United pressure which culminated in a routine equaliser as Obertan flicked on Norwood’s corner, and King nodded home from close range.

Sniffing blood, United poured forward in numbers. Morrison slalomed through a packed penalty area but Wilson was swiftly off his line to clutch the midfielder’s shot, then the goalkeeper spilled another Morrison effort, only for Petrucci to slide the rebound wide under heavy pressure.

Time ran out before United could make the late momentum count, but a point apiece was ultimately a fair finish to an engaging, high-octane game.

United: Devlin; R Brown (Petrucci 62), Wootton, Gill, Vermijl; Norwood, Tunnicliffe, Morrison; Bebe (Pogba 62), Obertan, King.
Subs not used: Johnstone, Thorpe.

NEWCASTLE UNITED 1
Richardson 86

MANCHESTER UNITED 2
Obertan 68, 85

Res: Newcastle 1 United 2

Gabriel Obertan struck twice in the second half as the Reds claimed a hard-fought away win at Newcastle United on Monday afternoon.

The Frenchman made the breakthrough in the 68th minute, controlling substitute Davide Petrucci's ball over the top before advancing to beat Magpies keeper Tim Krul. Obertan then doubled the Reds' lead five minutes from time after again being picked out by Petrucci.

Newcastle pulled a goal back through Michael Richardson's close-range finish, but the Reds then held firm for the final few moments to end a winless streak of three games.

The three late goals reflected an improvement on the first half, when the most notable action reduced both sides to ten men. The Reds' Ravel Morrison and Newcastle's James Perch were both sent off on the brink of the interval following an off-the-ball incident. Morrison had come closest to opening the scoring just a few minutes before his red card, when a wind-assisted 30-yarder hit the crossbar.

Two goalline clearances prevented further goals, one for each team. Reds defender Oliver Gill thwarted Jeff Henderson's effort from a Newcastle corner when the score was 0-0, while Ryan Tunnicliffe's attempt, shortly before Obertan's second goal, was brilliantly blocked by Magpies sub Patrick Nzuzi.

United: Johnstone; R Brown, Wootton, Gill, Dudgeon; Vermijl (Petrucci, 53), Norwood, Tunnicliffe, Obertan; King (Blackett, 64), Morrison. Subs not used: M Keane, McGinty.

WEST HAM 0

MANCHESTER UNITED 1

Michael Keane followed his brother Will's lead to earn United's reserves a hard-fought victory at West Ham.

The versatile Irishman poached an 80th minute winner a day after striker Will marked his return to action with a goal for the Under-18s at Carrington.

A bumper crowd of 1,106, swelled by a number of schoolchildren, saw a disappointing first half with few chances created. The Hammers' pace in attack started causing a few problems so the Reds made a tactical change with Reece Brown advancing into midfield, Joe Dudgeon moving to full-back and Keane switching flanks.

Sam Johnstone made one excellent save in the opening 45 minutes following a deflection off Tom Thorpe but wasn't overly busy as a tight match unfolded on a difficult pitch.

The Hammers were able to introduce Jack Collison as a substitute on the hour mark following a lengthy injury lay-off with Davide Petrucci replacing Larnell Cole at the same time for United. Petrucci quickly settled into the pace of the game and was able to help United control proceedings with the hosts beginning to tire.

Joshau King's tireless running in attack started to create openings and he flashed one shot just wide of Marek Stech's goal before forcing the keeper to tip over for a corner.

As the match entered the final 10 minutes, Keane struck the winner. Marnick Vermijl made a burst down the left to win a corner and

Oliver Norwood's near post flag-kick caused havoc. Stech failed to reach it through a crowd of players and Keane volleyed into the ground and over Herita Ilunga on the line to claim his first goal at this level.

Although King was afforded a hard-earned rest, the Reds managed to see out the closing stages with Johnstone denying Freddie Sears in one nervous moment, even if the linesman's flag was already raised for offside.

United move up to third place in the table with a key fixture against Manchester City to follow next Thursday.

United: Johnstone; R Brown, Wootton, Thorpe, Keane; Norwood, Vermijl, Tunnicliffe, Dudgeon, Cole (Petrucci 60); King (Lingard 81). Sub not used: Fettis.

MANCHESTER UNITED 3
Obertan 29, Anderson 71, 79

MANCHESTER CITY 1
Ibrahim 30

Reserves: United 3 City 1
07/04/2011 21:00, Report by Adam Marshall

Anderson's quality shone through as United's reserves won the mini-derby with City's Elite Development Squad to move above our neighbours in the table and go a point behind leaders Wigan.

The Brazilian scored twice in the second half and combined superbly with Gabriel Obertan, who netted the opener. It was a perfect message to Sir Alex Ferguson that he is ready to come back into the first-team fold.

United began brightly with Oliver Norwood setting up openings for Obertan and Joshua King, only for Loris Karius to make two vital blocks. Bebe had a decent crack at goal that flew wide from a King pull-back but there was a blow to Warren Joyce's team when Ben Amos dislocated a finger, with Conor Devlin taking over in goal.

Two goals in the space of 40 seconds illuminated the opening period as Obertan lashed home a sweet low drive from Petrucci's inviting pass after build-up play by Reece Brown and Joe Dudgeon. City's response was instant as the speedy Jeremy Helan burst down the left and Abdisalam Ibrahim converted as the visitors queued up to provide a finish.

In front of 855 fans at Moss Lane, Davide Petrucci and Norwood's passing was a feature of the first half but Petrucci showed his defensive side by bravely getting in the way of a shot by fellow Italian Andrea Mancini.

Devlin made a fine one-handed save to keep out a deflected shot from John Guidetti and Mancini sent an ambitious chip over the top when gifted possession by Norwood's careless pass. Anderson's half-time arrival failed to herald an immediate improvement in United's fortunes as Devlin was forced to make good stops from Guidetti and Shaleum Logan's long-ranger that clipped the bar.

The woodwork was struck again when Mancini's curler hit an upright and bounced off the back of the grounded Devlin but the Reds survived the scare. Ibrahim was fortunate to only receive a yellow card for an X-rated tackle on Brown before Anderson took centre stage in some style.

With 19 minutes left, the Brazilian burst through to exchange passes with Obertan and supply a cool finish with his right foot. It was a move of first-team quality and Ando repeated the feat eight minutes later by playing another one-two with Obertan and tucking a left-footed drive wide of Karius. Anderson showed off his skills, one pass to Bebe was simply outrageous, but his partner in crime Obertan was replaced by debutant Jack Rudge after receiving a yellow card for a flare-up with Logan.

Petrucci shot wide and King was unlucky not to get a penalty after being barged in the box although City should have pulled one back when Guidetti skied a chance from close range.

United: Amos (Devlin 25); Vermijl (Anderson 46), Dudgeon, Wootton, Gill; R.Brown, Norwood, Petrucci; Bebe, King, Obertan (Rudge 85). Sub not used: Rothwell.

MANCHESTER UNITED 4
King 28 30, Obertan 60, Bebe 81

CHELSEA 1
Nkumu 37

Res: United 4 Chelsea 1
18/04/2011 21:00, Report by Adam Marshall

United closed in on the Northern Group A reserves title with a convincing 4-1 success against Chelsea.

Joshua King scored twice inside two minutes and second half strikes by Gabriel Obertan and Bebe, both created by outstanding playmaker Oliver Norwood, took the second string to the brink of clinching top spot. However, Manchester City's win over Liverpool means United still need one point from our last two matches to make mathematically certain.

The Reds' speedy front trio immediately caused problems for the visiting rearguard with King almost pouncing on a sloppy backpass by Armin Affane in the third minute. Norwood released Obertan with a splendid through ball but the Frenchman could only loft his shot onto the top of the goal as the Blues struggled in defence.

Obertan headed over a Bebe cross and then saw his centre somehow evade King in the middle before two goals in two minutes painted a fairer reflection of United's dominance. Robbie Brady won the ball on a break from a Blues corner to feed Norwood and King was able to sprint forward, play a one-two with Marnick Vermijl, and place a cool finish wide of Jan Sebek.

Two minutes later, Norwood was at the root of another devastating move which saw Brady feed the overlapping King, who cut in from the left to bury a confident drive into the net from an acute angle.

Although Brady was booked for a rash challenge on Adam Phillip, Warren Joyce's side looked in control until a free-kick by Gokhan Tore was headed past Ben Amos by Archange Nkumu. King looked for a hat-trick as United responded but his shot was comfortably saved and, instead, Amos looked on nervously when Carl Magnay's effort flew over in first-half stoppage time.

There was more Reds pressure after the break with Bebe using his pace to get past Armin Affane, only to fire against Sebek's legs, and Obertan forcing the keeper into a decent stop with a stabbed attempt.

Seconds after Blues boss Steve Holland threw on fitness coach Chris Jones, Norwood supplied an exquisite through ball with back-spin that allowed Obertan to nudge it past the on-rushing Sebek before tapping home.

It should have given Joyce's side some breathing space but there was a fortunate escape when Chelsea had a goal wrongly chalked off for offside against Phillip following a ricochet off Amos and into the net via Vermijl. The keeper, returning after a dislocated finger, then pushed over a Tore drive as United were unable to rest on their laurels.

But the hosts remained a threat as Obertan's pace almost got him in for his second, only to clip just wide, and youngster Jack Rudge should have profited from a fine pass by fellow substitute Davide Petrucci but shot off target.

With Norwood still in quarterback mode, the Northern Irishman pinged a delightful pass into the path of Bebe who slammed past Sebek from close range for number four.

Bebe lashed over the top in the 89th minute and Norwood tried an audacious chip with the last kick as United showed why it's now only one defeat in the last 21 matches at this level.

United: Amos; Vermijl, Dudgeon, Wootton, Gill; R.Brown, Norwood, Brady (Petrucci 68); Bebe, King (Rudge 80), Obertan. Subs not used: Devlin, Wilkinson, Rowley.

LIVERPOOL 2
(Shelvey 32, Cole 84)

MANCHESTER UNITED 2
(Ajose 18, Obertan 87)

Res: Liverpool 2 United 2
06/05/2011 06:03, Report by Adam Marshall

United's reserves forced a 2-2 draw with a Liverpool side containing several players with first-team experience.

Nicky Ajose, who returned for a run-out with the Reds before ending his loan spell at Bury, saw his early goal overturned by Jonjo Shelvey and Joe Cole's drive that deflected off team-mate Nikola Saric. However, Warren Joyce's men secured a point when Gabriel Obertan hit a late equaliser and there were plenty of positives to take from the game - including Matty James' comeback from injury.

A keenly-contested affair unfolded with United clearly not going through the motions despite already having the group title in the bag. Ajose was a constant threat with his pace and was twice almost played through in quick succession before opening the scoring after 18 minutes. Marnick Vermijl's forceful run took him past Steve Irwin and his cross was tucked home by the Bury loanee.

There was a scare for the visitors when Davide Petrucci diverted an Irwin cross towards Ben Amos, before Obertan forced a block out of Danny Wilson at the other end and then snatched at a chance following a fine one-two with Ajose.

Shelvey levelled matters for Liverpool when Cole touched a short free-kick into his path as the former Charlton midfielder's powerful drive flew past a motionless Amos.

Ajose almost restored United's lead when forcing Deale Chamberlain to beat the ball away and the youngster was unable to convert after the break from a brilliant move involving Oliver Norwood and Vermijl.

The impressive Shelvey chipped a decent attempt over the top but there was a let-off for the hosts when Joshua King burst clear and appeared to be held back by Wilson. The Norwegian still scrambled the ball past Chamberlain but the keeper recovered to pounce on the loose ball.

With Oliver Gill and Scott Wootton outstanding in defence, the match was drifting towards a draw when King and Cole passed up decent openings.

However, there was late drama with the Merseysiders building up a head of steam. Shelvey's shot flicked off Norwood to force a diving save out of Amos but the keeper had no chance when another deflected effort, from the off-colour Cole, bounced off Saric's back and into the net.

It looked certain to prove the winner with only six minutes left but United's never-say-die ethos runs through the club and, when Norwood's free-kick thudded off a post, Obertan kept his composure to side-foot the rebound into the unguarded net.

United: Amos; Vermijl, Wootton, Gill, Brady; James (Blackett 46), Norwood, Petrucci; King (Ekangamene 80), Obertan, Ajose (Morrison 60). Subs not used: Devlin, Lawrence.

MANCHESTER UNITED 1
(Petrucci 65 (pen))

BLACKBURN ROVERS 2
(Rochina 21, 31)

Reserves: United 1 Blackburn 2

Darren Fletcher and Rafael couldn't help prevent a play-off defeat for United's Reserves against Blackburn Rovers at Old Trafford on Wednesday night.

The senior stars injected a healthy dose of experience into the Reds' starting line-up, but two Ruben Rochina strikes in the first period gave Rovers the platform to seal victory. A Davide Petrucci penalty midway through the second half redcued the arrears but Warren Joyce's men failed to find another goal to force the game into a penalty shootout. Blackburn will now meet Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Monday in the national play-off.

Despite the result, there was some good to come out of Wednesday's game. Darren Fletcher, who's played just 17 minutes of first-team football since 6 March, was handed an opportunity to gain some much-needed match fitness and played 65 minutes in the centre of midfield. Sir Alex Ferguson has made it clear he wants Fletcher to play in the Champions League final later this month and the Scot showed enough against Blackburn's second-string to suggest he's well on the road to full fitness.

There was also a place in the starting XI for young Brazilian Rafael, who played 45 minutes on the right side of midfield and almost forced a chance in the opening minute. Rovers stopper Mark Bunn did well to snuff out the danger. Fletcher was also involved early on, teeing up Oliver Norwood to blast just over from 20 yards before dragging a shot of his own just past the post a minute later.

More sound goalkeeping then kept Blackburn in the game, as Bunn produced a splendid stop to tip over Gabriel Obertan's powerful volley. The Frenchman was a constant menace down the left flank in the first period, his pace and power proving a real headache for Rovers right-back Josh Morris.

The visitors hung on, though, and took the lead against the run of play when Rochina unleashed an unstoppable effort from 22 yards that flew past Ben Amos in the United goal. But while the strike was out of the top drawer, Rochina will have been surprised by the amount of space he was afforded in the final third.

Rafael hit the base of the post less than 60 seconds after the restart with a smart volley but it was as close as the Reds came to drawing level before Blackburn struck again just on the half-hour. Rochina nabbed his second with a strong finish into the roof of the net from 12 yards after a smart backheel from Michael Potts had played in the Spaniard.

Neither side fashioned a further chance in the first period and the Reds made a double change at the start of the second. Rafael made way for Davide Petrucci, while Nicky Ajose replaced Oliver Norwood.

That prompted a switch in formation, too, as United went from 4-5-1 to a loose 4-3-3, with Ajose flanked by King and Obertan. It almost paid immediate dividends when Bunn spilled a stinging Petrucci shot before doing well to block Ajose's close-range rebound.

The game then threatened to boil over when Robbie Brady and Reece Brown were booked in quick succession for full-blooded challenges (Brown's ended Rochina's involvement in the game), but referee Dean Mohareb did well to diffuse the situation.

United continued to probe for a way back into the game and were duly rewarded on 65 minutes when King's driving run was halted inside the penalty area. Substitue Petrucci stepped up to tuck away the spot-kick and reduce the arrears.

Blackburn's two-goal lead would have been restored a minute later had Ben Amos not stood firm as Rovers substitute Tom Hitchock bore down on him. The Reds goalkeeper was then relieved to see Mauro Formica miss the target after Amos' heavy touch gifted the midfielder a sight of goal.

With a place in the national play-off at stake, United threw men forward in search of a second goal. Petrucci hit the target from distance and Obertan rippled the side-netting, but Blackburn stood firm to see off the Reds' late rally and book a date with Chelsea at Stamford Bridge next week.

Remember, though: United's league challenge may be over but there's still a Lancashire Senior Cup semi-final (v Blackburn) and a Manchester Senior Cup final (v Bolton) to look forward to.

United won the Manchester Senior Cup for the 30th time in the club's history on Monday night as the Reds' reserve team - bolstered by Darren Fletcher, Anders Lindegaard and Rafael - turned over Bolton Wanderers at Old Trafford.

This was the Reds' seventh win out of seven games in this season's competition - the group-stage successes including a 4-0 victory over the same opponents last September. Nick Ajose - who netted a 16-minute hat-trick in that earlier meeting - also struck first in the final, five minutes before the break, and was swiftly followed onto the scoresheet by Reece Brown. And although Bolton's Tom Eaves pulled a goal back in the 80th minute, Italian substitute Davide Petrucci sealed the silverware for United with a penalty moments later.

United’s best chance inside the first 10 minutes was carved out by Gabriel Obertan cutting the ball back from the right-hand byline, only for Ajose to misfire in the middle. Ajose was also off-target when Norwood played on after Obertan's penalty shout was ignored. The Reds' number nine met the midfielder's fine cross at the far post but nodded the ball onto the roof of Lainton's net.

Bolton spurned an opportunity to capitalise on some early counter-attacks when centre-back Ben Dennis planted a free header wide from Josh Vela’s left-wing corner. Lindegaard was called into his first real action moments later, diving right to clutch a powerful drive from Tom Eaves at the spearhead of Wanderers’ attack.

Brady tried his luck from both flanks as the Reds began to dominate, his first strike from the left spinning off a defender for a corner while his right-wing shot fizzed wide of the far post. Width was also key to Bolton’s attack with Obadeyi’s strength and pace on the left giving Rafael a rigorous work-out. At one point the Wanderers winger blazed a trail along the left-hand byline, with the Brazilian full-back in his wake, but Obadeyi’s final ball left his coach exasperated – perhaps because nobody in white could supply the merest touch required to put Bolton in front.

The visitors’ frustration was compounded moments later when United took the lead instead, Ajose latching onto Fletcher’s pass to rifle past Lainton. Fletcher, a Senior Cup winner with the Reds way back in 2000, was also involved in the second goal, when Josh Vela fouled him 25 yards from goal. The resulting free-kick seemed ripe for an attacking player like Obertan, Norwood or Brady to strike it – instead Reece Brown stepped up from centre-back to beat Lainton with a low shot into the bottom left-hand corner.

The two-goal lead gleaned just before the break sent the Reds striding into the second half and Ajose almost added a third goal when his first-time stab from Brady's low cross was swept away by Lainton's right leg. Brady rode a couple of challenges before supplying the ball and he had the beating of Bolton right-back Riley again when he forced a good save from Lainton himself.

Brady made way just before the hour mark, as did Matty James, as the Reds responded to Bolton's double change of personnel by sending on Josh King and Marnick Vermijl. Both substitutes were quickly into the thick of it to work Lainton from either side of his area.

Rafael and Odebeyi reprised their first-half battle to the delight of a small crowd in the North Stand's lower tier, trading tricks and tackles in a skirmish as the game entered the latter stages. Fans of both clubs audibly enjoyed their duel but it was the visitors who were cheering next when Eaves received a pass from Vela and buried a shot beyond Lindegaard in the 80th minute.

If Bolton's goal put the final in the balance again, this lasted just six minutes until the Reds regained a two-goal cushion. Oliver Gill's marauding run into the area was halted illegally by Dennis' sliding challenge and referee Trevor Massey rightly pointed to the spot. Davide Petrucci, fresh onto the pitch as Obertan's replacement, put away the penalty to make it 3-1 to United and ensure Warren Joyce's team have a tangible reward for a long and largely successful season.

United: Lindegaard; Rafael, R Brown, Wootton, Gill; Norwood, James (Vermijl, 58), Fletcher, Brady (King, 58); Ajose, Obertan (Petrucci, 82). Subs not used: Devlin, Barmby.

Bolton: Lainton; Riley, Dennis, Connolly, McQuade; McGeechan (Kellett, 54), Vela, Blakeman, Obadeyi; O'Halloran (Odelusi, 54), Eaves.
