In the wake of Manchester United 3-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur last night, Teddy Sheringham has suggested that Sir Alex Ferguson can stop scouring world football for a world-class playmaker, because he has one at his disposal already in the form of Tom Cleverly.

Ferguson entrusted a number of his youngsters with starting berths last night, including the trio of new signings Ashley Young, David de Gea and Phil Jones, all of whom were very impressive.

However, 22 year-old Clerverly was the pick of the bunch, putting in a performance full of sparky creativity and persistence.

Cleverly in midfield looks like a very accomplished player. He plays a very experienced game, just passing and moving it when he has to.

I am sure he has had years of watching the way Roy Keane and Paul Scholes play. I think he will follow on from that.

Tom Cleverley: Starting for Man United has not made me a big head

Tom Cleverley says starting the season as a regular in the Manchester United side has not changed him.

The 22-year-old midfielder enjoyed a successful loan spell at Wigan last season and is in the England squad for the Euro 2012 qualifiers against Bulgaria and Wales.

But he said: ‘I am still the same player and the same guy. Just because I am playing in United’s first team, that doesn’t all of a sudden make me a great footballer.

‘It is a bit strange when people are talking about you but in my head I am still the same footballer who was sent out on loan to Wigan.’

Cleverley, who is part of a reshaped and younger United squad, insists that despite United’s superb start to the season, including Sunday’s 8-2 hammering of Arsenal, the players are taking nothing for granted.

‘Nobody wants to get too carried away,’ he said. ‘But this is a youthful squad and it is exciting to be part of it.

‘Some of us younger lads don’t know what it is like to win the Premier League yet, but that is where the experience of others comes into it.

‘A few older players left the club in the summer but we have still got experience in abundance.’

Manchester - Tom Cleverley sukses menembus tim inti Manchester United pada awal musim ini. Apakah ada yang berubah dari gelandang 22 tahun ini sehingga dia mulai dipercaya Sir Alex Ferguson? Tidak.

Setelah dalam beberapa musim terakhir menjalani peminjaman di Leicester City, Watford, dan Wigan Athletic, Cleverley berhasil masuk tim utama MU musim ini. Dia selalu jadi starter dalam tiga laga awal yang dilakoni The Red Devils. Sejauh ini, dia bisa membayar kepercayaan Ferguson dengan penampilan apik di lapangan.

Meski namanya mulai mencuri perhatian dan reputasinya makin menanjak, Cleverley merasa tak ada yang berubah dari dirinya.

Yang pasti dia "tertarik" dengan gaya maen Xavi dan Iniesta. Klo ternyata dia meniru gaya Xavi dan Iniesta ya nggak masalah kan? Toh keduanya saat ini 2 gelandang terbaik dunia. Manchester - Tom Cleverley menjadi salah satu pemain muda Manchester United yang tampil menonjol di awal musim ini. Meski begitu, Cleverley menganggap dirinya belum jadi pemain hebat.

Cleverley naik ke permukaan di tengah upaya MU mengejar gelandang-gelandang papan atas seperti Wesley Sneijder atau Samir Nasri. Keberadaan Cleverley membuat 'Setan Merah' akhirnya tidak ngotot memburu nama-nama di atas.

Kepercayaan yang diberikan kepada Cleverley mulai terbayar ketika ia tampil baik sebagai pemain pengganti di laga Community Shield menghadapi Manchester City. Setelahnya, pemuda 22 tahun itu selalu jadi starter dalam tiga laga MU.

"Menembus tim inti selalu jadi target saya dan saya sudah melakukannya sekarang," tutur Cleverley seperti dikutip situs resmi MU.

"Mungkin ini terjadi sedikit lebih cepat ketimbang perkiraan orang, namun saya harus terus bekerja keras jika saya ingin terus masuk dalam tim ini," tambah gelandang yang musim lalu dipinjamkan ke Wigan Athletic itu.

Walau sudah menembus tim inti, Cleverley tidak mau besar kepala. Ia masih terus berusaha meningkatkan kemampuannya karena jadi pemain inti MU tidak serta merta berarti ia sudah jadi pemain hebat.

"Saya berkembang selama pra-musim. Saya masih pemain yang sama dan pribadi yang sama. Hanya karena saya jadi pemain inti MU, tidak berarti tiba-tiba saya sudah jadi pemain hebat," tuntas Cleverley.

Manchester - Suporter Manchester United tampaknya harus bersiap-siap menerima kabar buruk soal kondisi Tom Cleverley. Sir Alex Ferguson sudah mengonfirmasi bahwa Cleverley kemungkinan mengalami patah kaki.

Cleverley cuma berada di lapangan selama delapan menit saat MU mengalahkan tuan rumah Bolton Wanderers, Sabtu (10/9/2011). Gelandang berusia 22 tahun ini tak mampu melanjutkan pertandingan setelah ditekel oleh Kevin Davies.

Memang belum ada keterangan lengkap dari pihak klub mengenai kondisi Cleverley. Tapi, Ferguson menduga anak buahnya tersebut mengalami patah kaki.

"Kami pikir itu patah kaki," ucap Ferguson yang dikutip Soccernet.

Dengan performa Cleverley yang sedang bagus-bagusnya, kejadian ini jelas membuat Ferguson kecewa. Pria asal Skotlandia ini juga menyayangkan tekel Davies yang dianggapnya kasar.

"Sangat disayangkan, tapi dugaan kami seperti itu. Itu adalah tekel yang buruk," ujarnya.

Sir Alex Ferguson has confirmed that Tom Cleverley will spend the next four weeks on the sidelines after limping out of United's win at Bolton on Saturday.

It was feared the midfielder, who has started the campaign in fine form, had broken a bone in his foot after feeling the full force of a Kevin Davies tackle just before Javier Hernandez's opener at the Reebok.

But the boss told ManUtd.com on Sunday that Cleverley has suffered ligament damage to his foot rather than a fracture.

The manager also said the club's medical team would assess second half knocks to Patrice Evra and Jonny Evans, ahead of the Reds' Champions League opening group game against Benfica in Lisbon.

"We'll see them on Sunday," he told MUTV. "Jonny is doubtful for Wednesday - he got a knee in the hip in the second half which was pretty painful, while Patrice got a kick on the kneecap. We'll have a look at them on Sunday - it's too early to say [how serious the injuries are]."

MANCHESTER - Pendukung Manchester United bisa bernafas dengan lega. Pasalnya, Pelatih Sir Alex Ferguson sudah memastikan gelandang muda andalan, Tom Cleverley hanya absen sekitar satu pekan.

Seperti diketahui, Cleverley terpaksa ditandu keluar lapangan ketika Setan Merah menyambangi markas Bolton Wanderers di Reebok Stadium, Minggu kemarin. Cleverley mengalami cedera setelah ditekel keras oleh pemain Bolton, Kevin Davies.

Sir Alex kepada MUTV menegaskan, pemain yang sempat dipinjamkan ke Wigan Athletic itu, hanya ada kerusakan ligamen. Praktis, Cleverley hanya absen selama satu bulan saja, atau lebih cepat dua bulan dari perkiraan sebelumnya.

Kabar gembira ini langsung disambut oleh Michael Owen, melalui akun twitternya. Mantan penyerang Liverpool dan Real Madrid itu mengakui lega, Cleverley tidak absen lama dalam membela United nanti.

"Sangat senang mendengar berita yang menyatakan kaki Cleverley tidak patah. Mari berharap Cleverley bisa sembuh dengan cepat," kicau Owen dalam akun twitternya bernama @themichaelowen, Senin (12/9/2011).

Davies Sudah Minta Maaf kepada Cleverley

Bolton - Striker Bolton, Kevin Davies mengaku telah meminta maaf kepada pemain Manchester United, Tom Cleverley yang sudah dibuatnya cedera. Ia merasa lega karena cedera Cleverley tidak serius.

Davies melakukan tekel keras terhadap Cleverley saat kedua tim saling berhadapan di Reebok Stadium, Sabtu (10/9). Pemain berusia 22 tahun itu terpaksa meninggalkan lapangan di menit kedelapan dan melewatkan pesta gol MU yang mengalahkan Bolton 5-0.

Awalnya, Cleverley diduga mengalami patah tulang kaki yang memungkinkan dia absen lama. Namun setelah menjalani pemeriksaan, pemain yang sempat dipinjamkan ke Wigan Athletic itu hanya mengalami masalah pada ligamennya sehingga dia pun hanya akan absen sebulan saja.

Davies mengaku setelah mengetahui cedera Cleverley langsung menghubungi pemain yang ditekelnya tersebut untuk mengungkap penyesalannya.

Sun apologises to player and is to pay damages for falsely accusing him of sending text messages asking for sex

The Sun has apologised and agreed to pay "a substantial sum in damages" to Manchester United footballer Tom Cleverley for falsely accusing him of sending a woman text messages asking for sex.

In a statement read by David Price QC, acting on behalf of Cleverley, the high court in London heard on Wednesday how the Sun had published an articled headed "Man U ace begged me for sex at 5am (even though he's dating)" on 16 August 2011 and on its website.

According to the statement, the article alleged that Cleverley "had met a girl in a Blackpool nightclub and bombarded her with text messages offering her sex".

"Mr Cleverley was then alleged to have taken the girl to a B&B where he introduced her to his bodyguard and did a Google search on his name to demonstrate to her that he was a famous footballer.

"Most seriously, the article then alleged that he repeatedly badgered her for sex, despite her saying no."

It transpired that the man involved was not Cleverley but someone who was impersonating him. Another individual from the same town as the imposter pretended to be Cleverley's bodyguard.

Price said: "The claimant was extremely upset and embarassed by the article. He was not prepared to allow the article to remain unchallenged and therefore brought this claim for libel."

The lawyer added that Cleverley had never met the girl involved and on the night of the alleged incident he was at home with his girlfriend in Manchester.

The amount of damages is still being negotiated with the Sun's publisher, News International subsidiary News Group Newspapers, which will also pay Cleverley's costs.

It is understood that the Sun did not contact Cleverley before publishing the story.

The Sun published an apology in print and online on Wednesday. "An article on 16 August reported that Manchester United footballer Tom Cleverley had begged a girl for sex after meeting her at a nightclub, even though he was dating a Page 3 model.

"In fact, entirely unknown to the girl it now transpires that the man involved, who looked like Tom Cleverley, was impersonating him. We apologise to Mr Cleverley for any embarrassment caused."

It earned him a place in the line-up ahead of Michael Carrick for United's first four Barclays Premier League games as the champions made a 100 per cent start to the season, but he then damaged ligaments in his foot in a challenge with Kevin Davies at Bolton a month ago and has been sidelined since.

It has not gone unnoticed at Old Trafford how much United have missed Cleverley's energy and quick distribution during his absence, with United struggling to beat Norwich and drawing with Benfica, Stoke and Basle.

It looks unlikely that he will recover in time for the trip to Liverpool on Saturday, but he should be fit to face City again in the Manchester derby the following weekend.

Cleverley's new deal is also reward for*his determination*to convince* Ferguson he would make it as a first-team player despite concerns among the coaching staff at United's youth academy that he was too small as a* teenager.


That was reflected in his* decision to go out on loan and gain experience in the Championship with Watford and Leicester rather than sit in United's reserves.

'I was never knocked back but I'd say I was doubted,' Cleverley told Sportsmail in April. 'I've never had it easy in my career. Compared to everyone else in the team I was really small. It was hard for me but I always had the confidence that one day I'd be good enough.

'It was strange to keep going out on loan. I've had four clubs and hopefully this time next year it's still four clubs and I'm playing for United.

'I'd rather the manager didn't buy players because he trusts the youth he's got. Hopefully we can prove him right.'

After handing Cleverley a new deal, United are now expected to focus their efforts on tying England striker Danny Welbeck to a long-term contract.

MU Tambah Kontrak Cleverley

Manchester, detiksport - Penampilan impresif dan menjanjikan Tom Cleveley di awal musim ini membuat Manchester United memutuskan untuk mengikatnya lebih lama. Pemain 22 tahun itu diperpanjang kontraknya di Old Trafford.

Klub berjulukan "Setan Merah" itu memberi tambahan kontrak empat tahun lagi kepada Cleverley, atau berlaku sampai akhir musim 2014/2015.

You must be delighted to be back after spending six weeks on the sidelines?
Definitely. The injury was bad timing. I was in the team, I was playing well and enjoying myself. These things happen in football though and you've just got to work hard on getting yourself fit, listen to what the physios say and stay upbeat.

How good did it feel to be back in action against Aldershot?
It felt great. It helps when you've got fantastic players around you as you can bed yourself in and work your way up to being 100 per cent.

A lot of fans have said how much they feel the team has missed you in recent weeks - that must be nice to hear but does it put extra pressure on you?
It's always nice to hear, but there's a bit of pressure [on everyone] anyway because last weekend's game was a bad result. At the start of the season, the whole team was very fluent and we were playing fantastic football. The games have been harder in recent weeks and it's very flattering to hear fans say they've missed me.

What do comments like that say about how far you've come this season?
It's been brilliant. Things went a little better than I expected at the start of the season and then I was disappointed to get injured, but I'm buzzing to be back now and hopefully we can get back to winning ways on Saturday.

Is there a positive feeling in the camp despite the derby result?
Yes definitely. We've got a great team spirit. We'll regroup and go forward from here.

MANCHESTER – Sir Alex Ferguson berusaha menenangkan fans Manchester United dengan memberikan kabar baik mengenai kondisi Tom Cleverley. Seperti diklaim Fergie, cedera Cleverley tidak terlalu serius seperti yang dibayangkan.

Gelandang belia ini terpaksa ditarik keluar di menit 55 karena dia mengeluhkan sakit pada engkel ketika Setan Merah memetik poin tiga atas Everton, kemarin malam. Tak sedikit kalangan mencemaskan kondisi Cleverley, apalagi dia juga baru pulih dari cedera yang beberapa kali membekapnya di awal musim.

Namun, Fergie menegaskan tak perlu mengkhawatirkan kondisi pemain usia 22 tahun ini. “Dia merasakan engkelnya lagi,” ujar Fergie kepada MUTV, Minggu (30/10/2011).

“Tidak ada yang serius, hanya terkilir dan kelelahan. Ini laga pertamanya, meski dia tampil Selasa lalu (di Carling),” imbuh pria yang menukangi United sejak 1986 lalu.

“Dia seharusnya baik pekan depan dan tampil bagus di babak pertama,” puji Ferguson.

Sementara itu, Fergie juga menegaskan Ashley Young kemungkinan akan absen beberapa lama, setelah pemain internasional Inggris ini merasa kesakitan di bagian lutut.

“Ashley mengalami cedera lutut, jadi dia bisa absen beberapa pekan,” pungkas Fergie.

Jade Dawson, 20, admitted being “totally taken in” by the imposter she thought was midfielder Tom Cleverley.

The fraudster even insisted that his “bodyguard”, a pal he had roped in to help him pull off the hoax, watch over them throughout their romp.

He stood guard as they kissed and fondled one another in a Blackpool bed and breakfast.

Jade turned down the seducer’s pleas for full sex but was still horrified when she learned he was not the England rising star.

The real Tom, 22, had been at home in Manchester with his glamour model girlfriend Emily O’Hara, 23.

Jade said when the truth came out she did not leave her house for a week after suffering abuse from fans who accused her of lying about their hero.

Young United goalkeeper Sam Johnstone, 18, then revealed the same faker had also tried to score with his missus.

Last night Jade warned other girls to be on their guard if approached by the lad claiming to be Cleverley.

She said: “I wish I had never met him, I’ve had nothing but trouble ever since. After I found out it wasn’t him I didn’t leave the house for a week as I was getting so much sh** from people.

“They were saying I had made it up. But I genuinely thought he was who he said he was. It’s so embarrassing.

He kissed her without warning and then typed his phone number into hers before whispering: “Text me later if you want a sh*g.”

After a flurry of texts they met up at his hotel, where his “security guard” introduced himself. Jade said: “I asked the guy why he needed a bodyguard and he said it was because he was a footballer.

“He told me his name and I said I had never heard of him.

“Then he got hold of my phone and typed Tom’s name into Google and all these pictures of him came up.

“He was laughing at the fact I didn’t know who he was, and that was a bit awkward.

“I know it wasn’t the real Tom but he looked just like him.

“I spent the night in his room and we kissed and he touched me intimately but that was as far as it went.

“I’m so relieved I didn’t go all the way, particularly since discovering it was all a big lie.

“I have often thought what I would say to him if I saw him again but I don’t want to waste any more time on him.

“I just want to put it down to experience and get on with my life.’’

Danny Welbeck says his Manchester United team-mate Tom Cleverley has what it takes to develop into a world-class player.

Despite some injury setbacks, midfielder Cleverley has made a big impression for United this term after returning from last season's loan spell at Wigan and has been called up to Fabio Capello's senior England squad.

The 22-year-old is not involved with the national squad preparing for Saturday's friendly with Spain due to an ankle problem, but Welbeck is, having also broken through at that level in recent months.

The striker is another United player to have caught the eye following a loan spell elsewhere, notching five goals for the Red Devils this campaign after spending 2010-11 with Sunderland.

Given Welbeck and Cleverley both came through the youth ranks at Old Trafford over the last few years, the former is well aware of what the latter has to offer - and believes there is plenty more to come.

"I think he can become a world-class player," Welbeck, 20, told United Review.

"Football is such a simple game, it's how hard you make it for yourself. Tom keeps it so simple and it is hard to do that when you're in centre-midfield, but Tom does that.

"He gets the ball, passes it, moves into space and he's just always there as an extra option every time you've got the ball.

"He's really good to play with, I enjoy playing with him so much and he's got the awareness, the vision and the ability to pick out a pass and actually produce a final pass as well.

"He's just going to carry on improving. You can see that every single day in training. He's a really good player."

He added: "We are really good friends off the field and quite a few people come up to us and tell us that it shows on the field.

"We've been through the same training schedule growing up through the academy, the same coaches who have taught us the same things, so we're on the same wavelength and we know each other's games inside out, more or less."

MANCHESTER, KOMPAS.com — Manajer Manchester United (MU) Alex Ferguson mengatakan, cedera pergelangan kaki yang diderita gelandang Tom Cleverley lebih parah dari perkiraan awal dan baru akan pulih pada Desember mendatang.

Cleverley mengalami cedera itu pada pertandingan melawan Everton, Oktober silam. Itu adalah laga perdana Cleverley pada Premier League sejak mengalami cedera kaki, pada pertandingan melawan Bolton, September silam.

Pada laga melawan Everton itu, Cleverley bermain sebagai starter. Cedera membuatnya digantikan Nani pada menit ke-57.

"(Pemulihannya) perlu waktu cukup lama. (Ia akan absen sampai) Natal. Ini sangat disayangkan. (Cederanya) lebih buruk dari yang kami perkirakan sebelumnya," ujar Ferguson.

"Ketika digantikan, Cleverley mengatakan (pergelangan kakinya) tegang dan terasa agak sakit. Kami memeriksanya lagi, dan cedera itu muncul lagi. Kami perlu memberinya istirahat," tambahnya.

Clev sudah berkembang dengan sangat baik kalau melihat track recordnya, dan bukankah seorang pemain pro seperti dia sudah tahu konsekuensinya..?? apalagi jelas dia bermain untuk (salah satu) klub terbaik dunia dimana semua gerak geriknya akan menjadi sorotan baik dari fans maupun dari lawan.

Cleverley Kecewa Dengan Cedera Yang Dialaminya

Bola.net - Tom Cleverley, gelandang muda Manchester United, mengaku sangat kecewa harus mengalami cedera yang membuatnya absen cukup lama, meski dirinya sedikit terhibur dengan performa rekan-rekannya.

Cleverley sebelumnya menjadi salah satu pemain utama United di musim ini, tapi cedera di bulan September ketika menghadapi Bolton membuatnya harus absen hingga kini.

Pergelangan kaki pemain berusia 22 tahun tersebut mengalami cedera yang cukup parah, dan kemungkinan besar bakal bisa kembali bermain setelah natal nanti.

Dan hal itulah yang membuatnya kecewa karena tak bisa ikut serta berjuang untuk meraih trofi juara musim ini.

"Saya sedang berada di bentuk permainan terbaik," ujar Cleverley pada Sky Sport News mengenai performanya sebelum mengalami cedera.

"Saya sangat senang dengan bagaimana tim kami bermain dan bukan saja diri saya. Tapi, saya sangat kecewa karena mengalami cedera," tambahnya.

Sementara itu, ketika ditanya mengenai persaingan meraih trofi Liga Premier Inggris musim ini hanya akan diikuti oleh dua tim, United dan Manchester City, Cleverley tak setuju dengan hal itu, karena masih banyak klub lain yang juga patut diperhitungkan.

Manchester - Cedera yang membekap Tom Cleverley dikabarkan mulai pulih. Meski disebut sudah bisa bermain pada akhir Januari, Manchester United tak mau buru-buru untuk memainkannya lagi.

Tom Cleverley is in line to make his Manchester United comeback in the Premier League encounter with Liverpool on 11 February.

The midfielder was one of the major influences behind United's flying start to the season, earning him England call-ups for the postponed August friendly against Holland and the Euro 2012 qualifiers with Bulgaria and Wales.

Yet almost immediately injury intervened. First the 22-year-old suffered a foot problem during the September win at Bolton Wanderers, then, on his Premier League reappearance at Everton on 29 October, Cleverley sustained a blow to his ankle and has been sidelined ever since.

However, Sir Alex Ferguson confirmed he is back on the comeback trail and should be able to play a part in football training within 10 days. If all goes to plan, Cleverley could be fit for match action within a week, which would put him on target to face Liverpool.

Ferguson said: "I am hopeful in 10 days' time he will be playing football on the training side of it anyway. That is the plan unless there is any recurrence of the injury. Then we can kick on.

"When he plays properly depends how he does in the training. His fitness levels should be fine, so he could cope right away. If he can, you are talking about a week."

Coming in the middle of a crucial period when United face a succession of top six contenders, Cleverly's return could provide a significant lift. "It would be a great boost to us," the manager said.

"The way that Tom started the season was absolutely phenomenal. I have not seen a young player have that impact at our club for a long time. He has been a loss because he has something different from everyone else."

Cleverley back to face Liverpool

Tom Cleverley is set to return to action for the first time since October in Saturday’s crunch Barclays Premier League clash with Liverpool.

The midfielder has been sidelined with an ankle injury since the 1-0 win at Everton on 29 October but is ready to make his comeback against Kenny Dalglish’s side.

Cleverley was due to play in the Reserves’ postponed clash with Chelsea at the start of the week and he was not selected for Thursday’s Manchester Senior Cup defeat to Man City, leading to speculation he would be involved in the first team this weekend.

Sir Alex said at his Friday press conference: "Tom's training well. We were disappointed the Chelsea Reserves game was called off on Monday. The plan was for him to stay over with us [after last Sunday's first-team game at Stamford Bridge] and play in the game on the Monday. That was called off. But he's trained very well and he'll be involved tomorrow."

Chris Smalling could also take his place in defence after missing the Chelsea draw with a knock, but Phil Jones will only be back for the Europa League trip to Ajax next week.

"There’s not much change on the injury front for us," Sir Alex added. "I think Smalling could be available, but all the rest is as it was last Sunday.

"Phil Jones got a knock against Manchester City, which he never quite recovered from. He'll be fit for next week. He'll be fit for the Ajax game."

Sir Alex is expecting another tough encounter with Liverpool and wants his side to cut out the concentration lapses that allowed Chelsea to take a three-goal lead last weekend.

"I think our performance levels in the last few weeks have been good, but we're losing goals in important games and that's a bit of a concern," the boss said. Last week, Juan Mata's goal was a fantastic strike - we couldn't do a thing about that - but an own goal and a deflected goal... we should do better.

"We lost two soft goals against Liveprool in the FA Cup and that shouldn't be happening at our club.

"We expect a hard game tomorrow but I'm just looking for the sort of performance we've been showing recently. That should help us."

England can forget about Paul Scholes, as Sir Alex Ferguson made plain with undisguised Scottish disdain before Manchester United's entry into the strange land of the Europa League, but it will not be long before they call for another precision midfielder who has reappeared at an opportune moment in the champions' season. Tom Cleverley was eased back against Ajax and even in a low-key return he showed why he has attracted more tributes than appearances for United.

The first-leg meeting with Frank de Boer's pragmatic Ajax will not register in the annals at Old Trafford other than for the night Cleverely made his European debut for the club at the age of 22. For a United player of such promise it has been a long time coming, a reflection of the level Ferguson's teams had been operating at in Europe prior to this season but also the injury problems that have curtailed Cleverley's progress and saw him given only 60 minutes against the Dutch club.

This was only the midfielder's eighth appearance in a United shirt in a season that was interrupted for six weeks after a foot injury sustained in a challenge with Kevin Davies at Bolton and then, two matches into his comeback, another four months after suffering ankle ligament damage at Everton. His previous seven outings had also resulted in a United victory, notably that 8-2 destruction of Arsenal and his display against Manchester City in the Community Shield when, for the undoubted promise on show, predictions of the new Scholes or the cheaper alternative to Wesley Sneijder always seemed a little premature.

The game reflected the status of European football's long, winding and overblown second competition rather than that of the two opponents but there were occasional glimpses from Cleverely of the energy and accuracy he brings to the United midfield. A direct confrontation with Ajax's coveted young Dane, Christian Eriksen, a player linked with Old Trafford, offered the glimpse of a potential midfield of the future. That never materialised as caution consumed the two sides.

Twice Cleverley demonstrated vision worthy of Scholes. In the first half he demanded a ball inside from Michael Carrick and instantly swept a superb pass for Wayne Rooney in space down the right. In the second, as Ajax cleared a United free-kick, he picked out Javier Hernández inside a crowded penalty area with a precise volley. Both opportunities were squandered by United and it did not help Cleverley to find so many of his outlets – Nani, Hernández and Ashley Young, irrespective of their goals – enduring nights when a good first touch was often beyond them.

United's young players require European experience as the team's feeble exit from the Champions League in Basel, and the analysis from Roy Keane that so irked Ferguson, underlined. Injury absolved Cleverley from any culpability for the Champions League campaign and here he showed the pace and movement to support the United attack as Scholes once did but no one could in their absence in Switzerland.

To the United manager, who recently salivated at the prospect of his midfield being improved by two players at opposite ends of the age scale, Cleverely's comeback is perfectly timed for the business end of the season and allows him an alternative to playing Scholes for 90 minutes, regardless of how exemplary those 90 minutes were against Liverpool on Saturday. "It will be great to get the boy back because I think he's special," said Ferguson as Cleverley completed his latest rehabilitation. "He will be desperate to play with Scholes. We have a great collection of midfield players."

The master replaced the apprentice in Amsterdam and the expectation upon Cleverley is immense. As Eric Harrison, the former United youth coach synonymous with the best of the club's production line, said: "Tom for me is, without question, so good that he is the best young player at United since Paul Scholes, Ryan Giggs and David Beckham came on to the scene."

Cleverley has new goal as United star unveils football for 2012 Games

Manchester United midfielder Tom Cleverley has set himself a 20-game target to force his way into England's Euro 2012 plans.
A series of ankle injuries have delayed the 22-year-old's promotion to the senior England squad.

He would probably have made his debut against Holland but is now relying on two pre-tournament friendlies against Belgium and Norway to stake his claim.
Cleverley, speaking at the launch of adidas' official ball for the 2012 Olympics, said: 'If I get into the form like at the start of the season, then I can be part of the squad.'

Cleverley adopted the team's colours as he joined former Olympic gold medalist Jonathan Edwards at Coventry City's Ricoh Arena - one of the Games football venues - the launch new adidas ball, The Albert.

The colourful design was the brains of Bob Ashcroft, from Derby, who used the cockney rhyming slang 'Albert Hall' as his inspiration behind the name for the ball and he joined Cleverley at Thursday's launch.

Tom Cleverley Good Enough to Rule at Old Trafford?

Everybody thinks Manchester United need to replace Paul Scholes, but most believe he is irreplaceable.

Long before the "Ginger Prince" announced his retirement, desperate fans were demanding a high-profile signing. Wesley Sneijder has been the most commonly mentioned player. Luka Modric is not far behind.

But as the departures of Roy Keane, David Beckham, Ruud van Nistelrooy and Cristiano Ronaldo have shown, you don't have to replace like with like.

Some think you need a midfield destroyer, others a holding midfielder and most cite the need for a creative midfield general, i.e. a "quarterback."

The thing is, you can no longer afford to be predictable, as lesser teams have shown. When you field the same personnel every week, the pattern falls into place and makes it easier for opposing coaches to plan accordingly.

Twenty-First Century Squad Game

Today's game is a squad game at the top. Look at Nuri Sahin at Real Madrid; hardly an appearance. Paul Pogba should consider that, before he moves to Juventus.

Players coming to United accept that, as well as those that are there already.

In another column elsewhere, four years ago, I opined that Sir Alex Ferguson was moving towards "total football." Now everybody is looking at how Barcelona play—otherwise known as "ticky tacky" football. They have no traditional "No. 9" and Messi is allowed to play where he wants, as is Ronaldo at Real Madrid.

United have traditionally played 4-4-2, with attacking wingers and full-backs. Latterly, Ferguson has used 4-5-1 more frequently, especially away in Europe—to United's cost.

So you can't run on just one creative or just one defensive midfielder.

Maximum Flexibility

As Sir Alex has shown, the Premier League game has to be substantially adapted for the Champions League.

Once upon a time it wasn't so. Liverpool were a strong team playing a physical English game and imposed themselves on continental sides who had a more laid-back style and were more vulnerable at the back to an "English" centre forward.

Now, as Barcelona and indeed Athletic Bilbao have shown, things are different.

Barcelona play the nearest thing to modern total football from midfield forward; they impose their game on the opposition, harry to win the ball back and hardly ever give it away. The defence is under less pressure.

Bilbao seem to have brought us full circle. They play tight, passing football and have an old-fashioned No. 9 in Fernando Llorente to finish things off.

Although United beat Fulham, Sir Alex was angry at the amount of possession given away. In practice, United play the Barcelona way, but at pace. The idea is to press and press until an opening is made, with goals still often coming from wing crosses into a striker.

So the modern midfielder of course has to pass the ball well—ideally exceptionally well—both short and long. Paul Scholes started life as a No. 10, coming into the box late to finish. As his career has gone on, he has dropped farther back, until he is now more of a holding midfielder who can pass.

is reputation is now built on his passing ability. Very few have surpassed him. Although Tom Cleverley can pass effectively, he is not that type of player.

Tom Cleverley's Role

United's game is now based more on close passing, played at pace. From the Academy right through to the first team, close ball skills and the ability to trap and pass a ball in an instant are paramount.

Cleverley can play that game and has terrific energy levels. He can also score with either foot and is often seen in and around the box.

In the Community Shield, his combination with Anderson—a skillful ball-player—won the match against City.

He is a clever player who makes intelligent moves, can see the game and change it—sometimes with an incisive pass, sometimes with a one-two or with a shot at goal. Players like Rooney know where he is and where he is going to be and vice versa.

He was impressive at Wigan and unfairly dubbed the "new Paul Scholes" when actually, he is more like the old Paul Scholes. Although he can hit a long pass, he doesn't often and will never be in Scholes' league in that respect.

If he's going to play higher than Scholes, he will need another creative midfielder like Anderson (or Eden Hazard) alongside him against lesser teams, and a holding midfielder like Carrick, Fletcher (or Javi Martinez) against the better ones.

He must also be able to interchange roles with his wingers and his fellow midfielder as appropriate. At least he reads the game well and as his confidence returns post-injury, he could be a significant influence on the title race both this season and next.

Another Midfield Signing?

Tom Cleverley is United through and through. He will not feel threatened by another midfielder being signed. He will see it as a challenge: first to fight for his place; later to form a winning combination with a new player and/or existing colleagues, like Carrick.

This season's extraordinary injury problems have shown the need for a breadth and depth of squad, but also interchangeability—especially for Michael Carrick.

If United win the title, it may well be one of Ferguson's greatest achievements, but there have been some close calls and a shambles in Europe, so it won't stop the "gaffer" from signing new players.

He is building for the future, so Martinez, Hazard and Ericksson are all possibilities. He could accommodate all three in his developing squad.

Fletcher may retire or go on a free. Carrick will remain as Ferguson's go-to player. Anderson could well move because of his perennial injury problems. Giggs and Scholes will become more peripheral, called in on demand—especially against lesser teams—to coach and encourage the younger players.

Let's hope Pogba stays. Irrespective of possible signings, he and Cleverley are the future of United. They understand each other's game, have energy and industry, complement each other and, above all, can both score goals, of which Carrick has fallen short.

Is Tom Cleverley Good Enough to Rule?

Only time will tell. He was very talented very young, but still seems to have developing to do at 23. There is no knowing how good he can become, but all the signs are very positive. His injuries will have knocked his confidence and that has shown in his recent performances.

He was in the squad on Monday, but didn't make the pitch; nor did Pogba. Sir Alex will rely on his experienced players until the title is secure, or a match is well won.

Cleverley is good enough to be around for many years, however—even into his 30s. He's the sort of player Sir Alex likes: homegrown; a committed one-team man; willing to do anything the manager asks, with an unusual humility, but not lacking self-belief.

At present, he doesn't look anything like a holding player and he's not Xavi or Iniesta, but he is good enough to be considered as a long-term England fixture.

The simple truth is that, while there are players around as good as Wesley Sneijder who can run a team from midfield, not even Luka Modric has that dominance. Roy Keane was the last player to be able to combine both attacking and defensive roles and he, like Cleverly, had a great engine. The nearest player to Keane at the moment may be Phil Jones, who was excellent in defence and attack on Monday until substituted.

Paul Scholes has dominated in a very different way. He is the orchestra leader like Sneijder, but he dictates by spraying passes all over the pitch and opening defences like a surgeon. He is also a calming influence, rather than the hustle and bustle of Cleverley.

Cleverley has developed steadily since he arrived at United and Roberto Martinez raved about him at Wigan. Paul Pogba also has the makings of a good player. Hazard, Ericksson or Martinez would bring different qualities with great close ball skills and, in Martinez's case, the ability to break up play.

In five years' time, the United first team will be very different from now and many of the elements are in place. You can expect Tom Cleverley to be playing a key role in the squad, whoever the manager is.
