ARLINGTON, Texas - Marco Urena scored a goal in each half and Costa Rica opened the Gold Cup with a 5-0 victory over Cuba on Sunday.
Urena gave the Ticos the lead in the seventh minute and then scored the first of two by Costa Rica within two minutes to start the second half. Alvaro Saborio, Heiner Mora and Joel Campbell also scored for Costa Rica, which has won all four matches against Cuba in the Gold Cup.
With the win, Costa Rica improved its record against Caribbean teams at the regional tournament with a 10th win in 16 matches.
Cuba remained winless against Central American teams and also extended its winless skid to eight in the Gold Cup, having lost seven of those since a 2-0 win over Canada 2-0 at the 2003 Gold Cup.
The opening game of the regional tournament began with Cuba controlling possession but Costa Rica, runners-up at the 2002 Gold Cup, struck first on the counter attack with its first opportunity on goal.
Los Ticos played a long ball played over the top of the Cuban defense to a streaking Cristian Bolaños, who settled on the left side before sending a low low cross to Ureña. The 21-year-old striker beat his defender to the ball and deflected it with his right foot, sending it past surprised Cuban goalkeeper Odelin Molina.
Cuba had an opportunity to equalize minutes later but forward Alberto Gomez, alone against Costa Rican goalkeeper Keilor Navas, lobbed his shot over the crossbar.
Afterward, Costa Rica controlled the pace and the possession, building on its lead with a goal just before halftime. Midfielder and captain Celso Borges sent a ball over the top and down that center that Saborio ran onto unopposed, and finished from inside the area past Molina for a 2-0 advantage.
Two more breakaways inside the first two minutes of the second half put the game out of reach. Captilazing on failed offside traps by Cuba, Ureña, a Gold Cup rookie, added to his goal total in the 42 seconds after the second-half kickoff, with Mora converting a similar breakaway one minute later.
The most spectacular goal of the night may have been the last one, as second-half substitute Campbell unleashed a fierce volley that from a tight angle that found the top right corner of the goal in the 71st minute.
Cuba made two substitutions to its forward line but rarely threatened Costa Rican keeper until a header by Dagoberto Quesada went wide with five minutes remaining.
Both teams play next on Thursday at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, North Carolina. Costa Rica plays El Salvador, followed by Cuba taking on Group A favorite Mexico in the second game of the doubleheader.

Mexico erupts for 5-0 win over El Salvador
By Ivan Orozco
ARLINGTON Texas - Efrain Juarez sparked a three-goal outburst in five minutes and Javier "Chicharito" Hernandez converted an injury time penalty to cap his three-goal night, leading Mexico to a 5-0 victory over El Salvador on Sunday.
Delighting a red, white and green flag-waving crowd of 80,108 at Cowboys Stadium, Mexico opened defense of its Gold Cup title with a display from the generation that is supposed to bring prestige to El Tri and join it with the world's elite under new coach Jose Manuel de la Torre.
The explosive attack that Mexico had been lacking in recent years erupted against El Salvador. But it took 55 minutes to arrive after missed opportunities and defensive miscues in the first half.
Mexico erupted after a first half in which El Salvador was able to contain El Tri and create its own scoring opportunities.
"Our rival stood firm and the situación became a bit difficult," de la Torre said. "The situation changed after we scored the first goal. That opened up a few things we could do. "
Juarez opened the scoring in the 55th minute with a bit of luck. His initial close-range diving header off a Giovani dos Santos' cross was blocked by Salvadoran keeper Miguel Montes, but the rebound struck a falling Juarez in the shoulder and bounded back into the goal.
De Nigris, who entered the game for Israel Castro following Juarez's goal, made it 2-0 three minutes later when he back-healed a ball between the legs of El Salvador defender Luis Anaya at the top of the area, ran onto it and beat Montes.
Hernandez, better known as "Chicharito", scored in the 60th, 67th minute and in injury time. His first came on a header off a volleyed pass by Andres Guardado. His second came off a Guardado long floating pass. Chicharito raced past defenders and tapped the ball into the net off the inside of the left post.
Chicharito completed the scoring in the fifth minute of injury time after drawing a foul from Marvin Gonzalez, who was ejected.
Chicharito, the Manchester United striker, played down his performance. He was quick to credit his teammates for making his hat-trick possible.
"The more important thing is the three points," Chicharito said in English when asked about his scoring by a reporter from the United Kingdom. "I don't care if I score or not but the important thing is getting the win. If I score, then I score."
The barrage of scoring sent Mexico fans into a frenzy.
It is what they came to see. The same could be said about fans in Mexico. And it is what de la Torre signed up for when he replaced Javier Aguirre as coach in October.
It is the way de la Torre wanted to start his reign with El Tri in his first competitive match as coach.
Mexico didn't play the part in the first half.
El Tri struggled, at times, to keep possession, and allowed El Salvador to create enough space to develop an attack. The Cuscatletcos had a chance as early as the sixth minute when midfielder Eliseo Quintanilla sent a blast that appeared to be heading into the goal only to have Mexico goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa make the save.
Mexico had its share of chances in the first half, including perhaps it best in the 38th minute when Guardado sent a right-footed shot from about 10 meters over the crossbar and deep into the seats.
Pablo Barrera also put a blast wide of the right post and into the stands in the 16th minute.
Mexico's missed opportunities kept El Salvador in the game.
El Salvador entered the Gold Cup as a better than 200-1 shot to win the title. Manager Ruben Israel spent countless hours studying video of various Mexico matches since he became coach in April. He also watched tape of Chicharito with Manchester United of the English Premiership.
Israel tried to minimize the stardom factor of playing Mexico, trying to shield his player from reporters by training behind closed doors as much as possible.
He didn't have an answer for Mexico's attack in the second half.
"It is very difficult to try and resolve things when three goals are scored in five minutes," Israel said. "It's difficult to find answers in five minutes when you keep a close game for 53 minutes of the game."
El Salvador, who had only played Mexico once in the Gold Cup, was able to contain Mexico for most of the match until Juarez's fortunate goal opened the door.

USA 2-0 Canada
DETROIT -- We were all in dire need of a reminder that the U.S. can still dominate the continent. And on Tuesday night against Canada, we got one.
While it wasn't by any means perfect, the U.S. bagged its first win of 2011 by more than one goal since Oct. 9, running out 2-0 winners.
In the first half, the U.S. was everything it hadn't been against Spain: aggressive, organized, sharp and composed. It sought out possession, moved well and applied high pressure when it lost the ball. Of course, the U.S. was also helped by the (ahem) difference in the quality of the opponent, as well as having its regulars available for an entire match. But the victory also showed a confidence that was completely missing against Spain. That manifested itself in a calmness on the ball that was lacking this past Saturday in Foxborough.
The U.S.'s distribution was clean, and the early pressure it applied led to a series of corners. Although it probably resorted to the long ball a little too often, given how plainly dominant Bob Bradley's men were, it was from one such ball that the opening goal emerged. Landon Donovan played an accurate ball into the box to Jozy Altidore, who trapped it, turned, gave it a good thump and saw it slip under Lars Hirschfeld, who didn't cover himself in glory on the play.
Even considering the opponent, the play was much improved. And that was largely down to Michael Bradley and Jermaine Jones in the middle of the park. They dropped back as far as necessary to ensure the safe passage of the ball through to the other side of the field. This also allowed for the U.S.'s wing backs to slide up and create problems for Canada on the flanks. The pressure Bradley and Jones exerted also kept Canada from getting into a rhythm in midfield for the bulk of the first half, forcing errors and taking the pressure off the U.S.'s defenders almost entirely. In all, the U.S. really conceded only one chance in the first half, when Dwayne De Rosario secured a rare pocket of space outside of the box and curled a shot just wide with his preferred right boot.
But the U.S. took its foot off the gas and failed to put the game away in the first half. And that almost came back to haunt it in the second, when Canada came roaring out of the locker room, putting the Americans on the back foot by approaching the game much the way the U.S. had in the first half -- with vigor, quick passing and savvy runs.
Canada, however, failed to turn its lone spell of dominance into more than a handful of forgettable chances. And by the time Altidore prodded deep into the box in the 62nd minute and earned an assist when Clint Dempsey slipped with the ball, Canada's fate was sealed.
In the end, the U.S. earned a much-needed win, which was a good start to the tournament -- one that left room for improvement.

Lima Pemain Timnas Meksiko Positif Memakai Doping

TAMPA -- Panama ended the United States' 26-game unbeaten streak at the Gold Cup, withstanding a second-half charge to upset the Americans 2-1 Saturday and assure itself of a place in the quarterfinals.
Luis Tejada and Gabriel Gomez scored first-half goals to put Panama ahead 2-0 before the United States tried to rally with a 66th-minute tally by Clarence Goodson.
The win, the first by Panama over the United States in nine tries, put "los Canaleros" atop Group C with six points, three more than the Americans and Canada.
The United States faces winless Guadeloupe in its group finale Tuesday in Kansas City, Kansas, while Canada will play Panama. Two teams from each group are assured of qualifying along with two of three second-place teams.
The U.S. walked dejectedly off the field, while the Panamanians celebrated with their small contingent of fans behind one of the goals.
Panamana, which had been outscored 18-4 in their eight previous encounters with the United States, went ahead in the 19th minute, taking advantage of some shoddy American defending in front of 27,731 at Raymond James Stadium.
Armando Cooper sent a diving header off a Gabriel Gomez left-wing feed that goalkeeper Tim Howard knocked away.
But the ball rebounded into the middle of the area, where U.S. defender Clarence Goodson appeared to get a foot on the ball, but Luis Tejada was able to knock over the line for his seventh goal in Gold Cup competition.
The Central Americans doubled their lead in the 36th minute on a penalty by Gomez.
U.S. defender Tim Ream tripped Blas Perez at the right edge of the penalty area and referee Marco Rodriguez of Mexico immediately pointed toward the penalty spot. Gomez shot into the upper left corner for a 2-0 advantage.
The Americans cut the deficit to 2-1 in the 68th minute. Landon Donovan sent in a free kick from the left side that Michael Bradley headed backward to a diving Goodson, who headed it home from four meters.
The Americans replaced Goodson with Chris Wondolowski, Major League Soccer's leading scorer last season, as it shifted to a three-man backline in an attempt to equalize. The move almost paid off in the 81st minute as Wondolowski, off a Jozy Altidore feed, missed an open goal from inside the six.
The Americans almost equalized again in the 90th minute when Bradley volleyed a 16-yard attempt that sailed just wide right of the net.
Panama had early chances, but Tejada could not meet up with a left-wing cross in the fourth minute.
Clint Dempsey had the American's first real chance in the eighth minute, putting a 16-meter volley just wide of the left post in the eighth minute.
Panama's goal appeared to awaken the United States, which began to press Panama not unlike the manner it did in its 2-0 victory over Canada on Tuesday.
Donovan set up Dempsey on a free kick, but the midfielder's shot went directly to goalkeeper Jaime Penedo in the 26th minute.
Two minutes later a Donovan corner kick found Goodson, but his header sailed wide right.
In the 30th minute, Donovan sent a 24-meter attempt toward net that Penedo caught.
The United States continued to send high and long balls into the area, and Panama almost capitalized on a counter in the 42nd minute when Tejada worked himself free but put a six-meter chance from the left side wide right.
Second-half substitute Alejandro Bedoya appealed for a penalty in the 64th minute, claiming he was tripped by Penedo, but Mexican referee Marco Rodriguez instead issued the midfielder a yellow card for diving.

Mexico win again, Cuba hammered
Soccernet - June 13, 2011
Mexico continued to put their off-field problems behind them with a 4-1 Gold Cup win over Group A opponents Costa Rica.
Both teams progress to the quarter-finals, Mexico having enjoyed three handsome wins despite the doping drama that led to suspensions for five squad members, while Costa Rica are through on goal difference from El Salvador.
Andres Guardado scored two of Mexico's goals, which all came in the first half, and Rafael Marquez and Pablo Barrera were also on target. Marcos Urena netted for Costa Rica.
For El Salvador, even a 6-1 win over Cuba was not enough to improve their goal difference beyond zero.
They must now wait on results in groups B and C to see if they qualify as one of two third-placed sides.
Rodolfo Zelaya scored in each half and there were also goals for Osrael Romero, Lester Blanco, Arturo Alvarez and Eliseo Quintanilla. Yenier Marquez claimed the Cuban consolation.

Late goal gives Panama 1-1 draw with Canada

KANSAS CITY, Kansas - Panama scored from a goalmouth scramble in the first minute of injury time and drew 1-1 with Canada on Tuesday to assure itself of the Group C title at the Gold Cup.
The result sent Panama to a quarterfinal against El Salvador while Canada's only hope of reaching the knockout round was for Guadeloupe to beat the United States in the second game of Tuesday's doubleheader.
De Rosario converted a second penalty in as many games to give Canada the lead, but a late scramble in which Anibal Godoy's shot got tangled beneath Canadian keeper Milan Borjan's feet and Luis Tejada was there to help it across the line.

USA progress to Gold Cup semis
ESPNsoccernet - June 20, 2011
The USA claimed a comfortable 2-0 win over Jamaica in their CONCACAF Gold Cup quarter-final amid muggy conditions in Washington D.C. on Sunday.
Second-half goals from Jermaine Jones and Clint Dempsey enabled the USA to secure their passage to Wednesday's semi-final, and put behind them much of the criticism received early in the tournament.
Star forward Landon Donovan started the game on the bench, but the USA looked dangerous in attack from the outset with Dempsey and Alejandro Bedova in particular causing problems for the Jamaican rearguard. But for some splendid goalkeeping by Donovan Ricketts, the home side surely would have made their dominance, in terms of possession, count on the scoreboard in the opening stanza.
The Americans didn't create as many chances in the second half, but they got the business done by scoring twice. The first came when Jones' shot from outside the box took a wicked deflection off a defender before landing in the back of the net in the 49th minute.
After that, although Jamaica pulled back its midfield, the USA got a little more comfortable on the ball as it was being pressed less, with the Reggae Boyz now overtly playing on the counter. This made for a much more low-key finish to the game. At least until Jones' thespian flop in the 68th minute. After he lost any hope of chasing down a through ball and decided the best remaining option was to go to ground, and Jermaine Taylor was subsequently sent off.
The USA then put the game to bed in the 79th minute when Donovan, who had bailed out of a promising run on goal moments earlier, played a nice ball wide to Juan Agudelo. He, in turn, played the ball square to the wide-open Dempsey, who made up for his lackluster finishing against Guadeloupe with a cool-as-you-like goal.

5 Reasons To Watch the Gold Cup
http://i682.photobucket.com/albums/vv189/zudomiriku/zudo%20II/115753698_crop_650x440.jpg
As the Gold Cup enters the semifinals, there are many reasons to watch the North American tournament. The winner will play in the 2013 Confederation's Cup, an invaluable experience before the 2014 World Cup.
There were many storylines entering the tournament, and so far, fans have not been supported. The early favorites (Mexico and the United States) are still alive, and they are hoping for another meeting in the final.
Although it isn't a foregone conclusion, the North American juggernauts are looking to assert their dominance once again. However, Honduras and Panama stand in the way. With only two rounds left, I have compiled a list of why you can't miss the remaining matches in the Gold Cup.
United States Continues to Improve

After disappointing showings in the World Cup and recent international friendlies, the United States are slowly coming together.
Bob Bradley continues to tinker with his lineup, and the players are slowly responding. They started the tournament off well, but after a defeat to Panama and an ugly win against Guadelupe, doubt surrounded the Americans.
Now, after a convincing win over Jamaica, Bradley's side has regained its confidence. The Americans will hope to get revenge against Panama, and hopefully, reclaim the Gold Cup title.
Mexico Continues To Overcome Suspensions

Even though Mexico is missing five players, the squad continues to dominate. The team advanced from group play with an astounding plus-13 goal differential in three matches. While it took a little more resilience to defeat Guatemala, the Mexicans have looked spectacular.
Honduras is a solid squad, but they don't stand much of a chance against Mexico. Mexico should take care of business once again, hopefully setting up a rematch in the final against the United States.
According to the most recent report, however, the suspended players tested negative on a different drug test. Now, the players' "B" samples (from the original test) will be examined, which could turn back negative.
If these players can return for the Gold Cup, Mexico will be sitting pretty.
Panama Is Looking To Defeat the United States a 2nd Time
http://i682.photobucket.com/albums/vv189/zudomiriku/zudo%20II/117036356_display_image.jpg
Even though Panama is ranked 67th in the world, they defeated the United States just over a week ago. Now, they are hoping to do it again.
For a team that hadn't played a match for over two months, Panama has looked good in the Gold Cup. After defeating El Salvador in penalty kicks, they will look to beat the United States (again) in order to reach the final.
While it seems unlikely, Panama has played well, and I expect them to give the Americans all they can handle.
Chicharito Is Emerging as North America's Best Player

Javier "Chicharito" Hernandez had a great season for Manchester United. In his first Premier League season, the Mexican striker scored 13 goals for Sir Alex Ferguson's side.
Now, he is becoming a superstar for his home country. Hernandez leads the Gold Cup with six goals, and he will (almost) surely add to that tally. The striker finds ways to score goals, and his knack for finding the net is addicting to watch.
While he has not earned the title yet, Chicharito is slowly emerging as the best player in North America, and it won't be long until he has that title completely.
United States Is Looking for Revenge from 2009

In the 2009 Gold Cup final, Mexico embarrassed the United States. Due to the Confederation's Cup, most American starters did not play in the match, but they were still shellacked by their southern rivals.
The United States has not forgotten the 5-0 drubbing. This Gold Cup has been dedicated for avenging that defeat, and the United States is hoping to beat their Mexican rivals in order to obtain the title.
While the title will be sweet enough, the Americans will feel even better if they are able to defeat Mexico for the crown. As for Mexico, they want to prove they can defeat a United States squad at full strength.
This bad blood is exactly why the remaining matches will be worth watching
