Premier League outfit Tottenham Hotspur will face Scottish Premier League counterparts Hearts after the Europa League play-off draw was made on Friday.

The draw also pitched two former Spurs bosses together, with Fulham's Martin Jol coming up against Juande Ramos' Dnipro.

Stoke City were handed a trip to Switzerland to take on FC Thun, while League Cup holders Birmingham City, relegated from the Premier League last season, face Portuguese outfit Nacional.

Rangers, eliminated from the Champions League by Malmo in midweek, head to Slovenia to meet Maribor, while last season's runners-up in the Scottish Premier League, Celtic, travel to Switzerland where Sion lie in wait.

Preview: Sporting Lisbon vs Lazio

Lazio berambisi meraih kemenangan perdana di Liga Europa ketika mereka menyambangi markas Sporting Lisbon di matchday 2 dini hari nanti.

Partai pertama dilalui dengan cukup susah payah oleh anak asuh Edy Reja, kendati bermain di Olimpico Roma mereka tak sanggup menang atas kontestan Grup D yang lain, FC Vaslui.

Saat itu mereka hanya bermain imbang 2-2, kini semangat mereka akan coba mereka tinggikan, sebab lawan adalah salah satu rival tersulit di Grup ini.

Ancaman sang tamu akhirnya dipahami benar oleh pihak tuan rumah, salah satunya adalah Valeri Bojinov, penyerang Sporting yang pernah malang melintang di Serie A cukup lama.

"Ini akan menjadi pertandingan sulit bagi kami," kata Bojinov. "Lazio musim ini telah diperkuat oleh para juara hebat seperti striker Djibril Cisse dan juga Miroslav Klose."

"Kami harus terus memasang mata pada pergerakan mereka karena mereka dapat mematikan di daerah tersebut. Saya tahu banyak para pemain Lazio dan saya tahu mereka memiliki banyak kualitas."

"Tapi kami juga memiliki tim yang bagus dan kami ingin melakukannya dengan baik di laga ini. Pelatih kami bekerja dengan sangat baik musim ini,"

"Selama musim panas kemarin kami mendatangkan 19 pemain baru, kami sedang berada pada jalur yang benar. Secara tim kami terus berkembang dan ini harus dijaga," tutup Bojinov.

Sporting menang 2-0 di FC Zurich pada laga perdananya untuk unggul dua poin dari Vaslui dan Lazio di puncak klasemen Grup D setelah putaran pertama Liga Europa.

Sementara pelatih Lazio, Edy Reja, melihat mulai ada hal positif dari permainan anak asuhnya. Hal yang paling ia inginkan adalah perbaikan di lini belakang, ia ingin para bek lebih disiplin.

"Untuk pertama kalinya musim ini kami tidak kebobolan dan itu adalah tanda positif," kata Reja mengomentari hasil terakhir timnya, yang bermain imbang 0-0 dengan Palermo di Serie A.

"Namun, kami menciptakan begitu banyak peluang melawan Palermo dan sayangnya kami tidak memanfaatkan sebagian besar dari itu semua."

"Melawan Sporting, kami perlu untuk mengambil keuntungan dari ruang-ruang yang akan mereka ciptakan. Hal seperti ini memberi kami kesempatan dan harus menjadi lebih agresif di depan."

Liga Europa Grup I
Udinese & Atletico Tertahan


Glasgow - Udinese dan Atletico Madrid sama-sama meraih hasil imbang 1-1 di matchday 2 Liga Europa. Mereka juga sama-sama terhindar dari kekalahan berkat gol pada menit-menit akhir.

Udinese menghadapi tuan rumah Glasgow Celtic di Celtic Park, Jumat (30/9/2011) dinihari WIB. Dalam laga ini, Celtic langsung unggul pada menit ketiga.

Gol Celtic diawali pelanggaran Danilo terhadap Gary Hooper di kotak penalti. Celtic pun mendapat hadiah tendangan 12 pas yang diselesaikan dengan sangat baik oleh Ki Sung-Yueng.

Namun, tiga menit jelang waktu normal habis, Hooper juga yang menyebabkan kemenangan Celtic yang sudah di depan mata lenyap. Dia melanggar di Neuton di area terlarang dan membuat timnya dihukum penalti. Almen Abdi yang jadi eksekutor menjalankan tugasnya dengan baik.

Atletico Tertahan di Kandang Rennes

Di Route de Lorient, kandang Rennes, Atletico juga meraih hasil imbang 1-1. Mereka tertinggal lebih dulu saat Victor Montano menjebol gawang Thibaut Courtois pada menit ke-56.

Namun, Los Colchoneros akhirnya selamat dari kekalahan. Gol Torres Belen Juanfran pada menit ke-87 membuat wakil Spanyol ini berhasil membawa pulang satu poin.

Hasil dua pertandingan di atas membuat Atletico menduduki posisi teratas klasemen Grup I dengan empat poin dari dua laga. Udinese punya poin sama dengan Atletico, tapi kalah selisih gol. Rennes dan Celtic masing-masing menempati posisi ketiga dan keempat dengan raihan satu poin.

Udinese Bekuk Atletico, Schalke & Maccabi Haifa Pesta Gol

Jakarta - Udinese membutuhkan sepasang gol di menit-menit akhir laga untuk menundukkan Atletico Madrid 2-0. Hasil itu bikin Udinese sendirian memimpin klasemen sementara Grup I.

Di matchday 3 Liga Europa, Jumat (21/10/2011) dinihari WIB, Udinese menjamu Atletico di Friuli. Bermain sengit, laga ini bahkan nyaris terlihat akan berakhir imbang tanpa gol.

Akan tetapi, pada menit 88 sepakan Mehdi Benatia dari jarak sekitar 11 meter ke arah gawang berhasil menjebol gawang Atletico.

Gol lain lahir dua menit berselang. Emmanuel Badu Agyemang mengirim umpan silang dari sayap untuk kemudian disambut dengan sepakan Antonio Floro Flores. Udinese menang 2-0.

Hasil itu membuat Udinese kini berhak memuncaki klasemen grup dengan poin tujuh. Atletico bergeming di posisi dua dengan poin empat.

Partai lain di Grup I ini sendiri berakhir imbang saat Rennes bermain 1-1 lawan Celtic. Kedua tim sama-sama meraih poin dua dari tiga laga.

10 Gol di Grup J

Di Grup J, Schalke dan Maccabi Haifa berpesta gol. Schalke menang 5-0 saat dijamu AEK Larnaca lewat gol Lewis Holtby, Klaas-Jan Huntelaar (dua gol), Benedikt Howedes dan Julian Draxler.

sementara itu Maccabi Haifa menang dengan skor persis sama atas Steaua Bukaresti, yang menyudahi laga dengan sembilan pemain setelah dua pemainnya dikartu merah masing-masing menjelang akhir babak pertama dan pertengahan babak kedua.

Gol Tunggal Pavlyuchenko Menangkan Spurs


London - Tottenham Hotspur meraih kemenangan tipis atas Rubin Kazan di kandang sendiri. Spurs menang dengan skor 1-0 lewat gol penyerang asal Rusia, Roman Pavlyuchenko.

Pada yang berlangsung di White Hart Lane, Jumat (21/10/2011) dinihari WIB, kedua tim sama-sama menampilkan permainan ofensif. Spurs, sebagai tuan rumah, harus mengakui dominasi tim tamu, meski akhirnya meraih kemenangan.

Rubin tercatat melepaskan 16 tembakan sepanjang laga dengan 11 di antaranya on target. Jumlah tersebut lebih banyak dibandingkan Spurs yang melepas 12 tembakan dengan 10 di antaranya tepat sasaran. Secara keseluruhan pun Rubin lebih unggul dalam penguasaan bola.

Spurs yang tampil dengan mengandalkan Pavlyuchenko dan Jermain Defoe, dengan ditopang Giovani dos Santos, di lini depan akhirnya mendapatkan golnya melalui situasi bola mati.

Pelanggaran Roman Sharonov terhadap Dany Rose akhirnya berbuah tendangan bebas sedikit di luar kotak penalti Rubin. Pavlyuchenko yang menjadi eksekutornya mengarahkan tendangan tersebut ke pojok kanan atas. Kiper Sergei Rhyzikov tak mampu menjangkaunya dan gawang Rubin pun bobol.

Pavlyuchenko sempat membuat satu peluang lagi di akhir babak pertama. Namun, sepakan melengkungnya masih mengarah tepat ke tangkapan Rhyzikov.

Rubin berusaha membalas di babak kedua. Namun, berbagai usaha serangan yang dibangun Bebars Natcho tak mampu memberikan hasil. Skor 1-0 pun bertahan sampai laga usai.

Hasil ini membawa Spurs untuk sementara memuncaki klasemen Grup A dengan nilai 7. Sedangkan Rubin turun ke urutan kedua dengan nilai 4.

Pada pertandingan yang sama di Grup A, PAOK Saloniki menang 2-1 atas tamunya, Shamrock Rovers. Berkat kemenangan pertama di fase grup itu, PAOK kini mengoleksi nilai 5 dan tetap berada di posisi tiga. Sementara Shamrock yang selalu menelan kekalahan harus puas menjadi juru kunci.

Fulham Tumbang, Stoke & Birmingham Raih Poin Penuh

Krakow - Fulham menjadi satu-satunya tim Inggris yang menelan kekalahan di matchday III Liga Europa. Sementara itu, Stoke City dan Birmingham City sukses meraup tiga poin dari lawan masing-masing.

Bertandang ke markas Wisla Krakow, Stadion Miejski, Jumat (21/10/2011) dinihari WIB, Fulham menelan pil pahit setelah sepakan kaki kanan Dudu Bilton pada menit ke-60 tak mampu dihadang oleh Mark Schwarzer. Bola mengarah ke pojok bawah gawang The Cottagers dan gol tersebut tak mampu disamai mereka sampai akhir laga.

Fulham sendiri bermain dengan 10 orang sejak menit ke-29 setelah Moussa Dembele menerima kartu merah langsung akibat melakukan pelanggaran terhadap Gevasio Nunez. Dengan keunggulan jumlah pemain, Wisla pun lebih leluasa untuk menguasai jalannya pertandingan.

Namun, Wisla juga harus bermain dengan 10 orang pada menit 87 ketika Osmar Chavez juga dikartu merah wasit. Chavez menerima kartu kuning kedua setelah melakukan pelanggaran terhadap Andrew Johnson.

Hasil ini tak mengubah posisi kedua klub di klasemen sementara Grup K. Fulham tetap berada di urutan kedua dengan nilai 4, sementara Wisla ada di posisi keempat dengan nilai 3--sama dengan nilai yang dimiliki Odense.

Posisi puncak Grup K masih dipegang oleh FC Twente yang di saat bersamaan menang 4-1 atas Odense. Twente mantap di puncak klasemen dengan torehan nilai 7.

Pada pertandingan lainnya di Grup E, Stoke melanjutkan tren bagus mereka di kompetisi ini dengan meraih kemenangan kedua. Bermain di kandang sendiri, di Britannia Stadium, Stoke menggulung Maccabi Tel Aviv dengan skor 3-0.

Ketiga gol Stoke diciptakan oleh Kenwyne Jones di menit 12, Cameron Jerome (24), dan Ryan Shotton (32). Hasil ini membawa The Potters memuncaki Grup E dengan nilai 7, unggul dua angka atas Dinamo Kiev yang menempati urutan kedua.

Satu tim Inggris lainnya yang meraih kemenangan adalah Birmingham, yang sukses menundukkan tuan rumah Club Brugge 2-1. Birmingham sempat tertinggal lebih dulu lewat gol Joseph Akpala di menit ketiga. Namun, mereka membalas lewat David Murphy di menit 26 dan akhirnya menang berkat gol Chris Wood di injury time babak kedua.

Birmingham kini memuncaki klasemen Grup H dengan nilai 6, sama dengan yang dimiliki Brugge yang ada di posisi kedua. Ini adalah sebuah kesuksesan tersendiri bagi tim yang berlaga di League Championship--level kedua di bawah Premier League--Inggris tersebut.

Zurich-Lazio Imbang, Sporting Masih Sempurna

Jakarta - Sporting Lisbon menjaga catatan sempurna usai menang 2-0 atas FC Vaslui. Di partai lain Grup D, hasil seri 1-1 hadir di laga antara Zurich dengan Lazio.

Di Letzigrund Stadium, Jumat (21/10/2011) dinihari WIB, Lazio yang menjadi tim tamu unggul lebih dulu pada menit 22. Usai menerima umpan Hernanes, Giuseppe Sculli sukses menjebol gawang Zurich.

Akan tetapi, keunggulan hanya bertahan semenit. Sepakan Nikci Adrian tidak tertahan untuk bersarang di dalam gawang Lazio. Skor 1-1 bertahan sampai akhir pertandingan.

Hasil itu membuat Lazio dan Zurich sama-sama mengoleksi poin dua dari tiga pertandingan yang sudah dilakoni.

Di partai lain yang berlangsug di Estadio Jose Alvalade, tuan rumah Sporting berhasil menundukkan Vaslui yang menjadi tamunya.

Gol pertama tuan rumah dicetak oleh Santos Fabiano Evaldo dua menit menjelang turun minum, sebelum kemudian Matías Fernández menutup kemenangan Sporting lewat golnya pada menit 70.

Meski Menang, Guidolin Tetap Tak Puas

Udine - Kemenangan yang diraih Udinese atas Atletico Madrid disambut dengan ketidakpuasan sang pelatih, Francesco Guidolin. Ia menilai, skuadnya tak bermain dengan baik pada laga tersebut.

Bermain di Stadion Friulli, Jumat (21/10/2011) dinihari WIB, Udinese harus menunggu hingga menit ke-89 untuk mendapatkan gol pertama yang dicetak Mehdi Benatia. Semenit kemudian, Antonio Floro Flores menyudahi perlawanan Atletico dan memastikan pertandingan berakhir dengan skor 2-0.

Guidolin menilai, anak-anak asuhnya gagal menampilkan permainan terbaik di babak pertama sehingga harus menunggu sampai penghujung laga untuk bisa memastikan kemenangan.

"Kami bermain buruk di babak pertama dan mungkin dihancurkan oleh rasa takut diri kami sendiri," sebut Guidolin pada Football Italia.

Udinese kemudian tampil lebih baik di babak kedua. Mereka menaikkan tempo permainan dan Guidolin menyebut, ada sedikit keberuntungan menaungi mereka di paruh kedua laga tersebut.

"Di empat puluh lima menit babak kedua kami menaikan tempo dan Anda melihat Udinese yang sebenarnya. Keberhasilan datang di menit-menit terakhir. Mungkin ada sedikit keberuntungan, tapi itu tidak masalah." katanya.

Dengan kemenangan ini Udinese memuncaki klasemen Grup I. Dengan raihan tujuh angka, anak-anak asuhan Guidolin itu unggul tiga poin atas Atletico yang berada di posisi kedua.

Redknapp Sanjung Pavlyuchenko

London - Gol tunggal Roman Palvyuchenko mengantarkan kemenangan Tottenham Hotspur atas Rubin Kazan. Atas penampilan yang bagus, Pavlyuchenko memperoleh pujian dari sang manajer, Harry Redknapp.

Belum lama ini Redknapp mengungkapkan niatnya untuk menjual Palvyuchenko di bursa transfer Januari nanti setelah si pemain kalah bersaing dengan striker Spurs lainnya.

Striker Rusia ini lantas merespon dengan gol tendangan bebas caem untuk memberi kemenangan timnya 1-0 di White Hart Lane, Jumat (21/10) dinihari WIB.

Atas tiga angka tambahan yang diraih, The Lily Whites kini memuncaki klasemen sementara Grup A dengan perolehan tujuh poin hasil tiga kali bertanding.

"Dia (Palvyuchenko) seorang striker fantastis," sanjung Redknapp kepada Channel Five.

"Dia punya dua kaki yang bagus. Secara teknis dia top, pemain yang top - tidak ada keraguan tentang itu. Senang melihat dia mencetak gol."

Secara keseluruhan, Redknapp mengaku puas dengan penampilan skuadnya karena berhasil mengalahkan Rubin yang sempat mengalahkan juara Eropa, Barcelona dua tahun lalu.

"Ini selalu menjadi malam yang berat. Mereka (Rubin) adalah tim yang bagus. Mereka pernah menyambangi Barcelona dan menang. Mereka bukan tim yang buruk. Saya pikir enam atau tujuh di antaranya ada di tim tersebut," sambung dia.

"Saya pikir tadi adalah penampilan yang bagus. Kami sedikit melambat di akhir tapi saya senang dengan tim saya," pungkas Redknapp.

5 Reasons United and City Should Try to Win Europa League

The world is not ending. The skies are not falling. It is not Armageddon. But try telling that to football fans in Manchester.

Both Manchester United and Manchester City crashed out of the Champions League in their final group matches.

Worse still, in the eyes of many, is that they both finished third in their groups, subsequently qualifying for the knockout phase of the Europa League.

The jibes of the Mancunian duo both playing on Thursday nights on channel Five have already begun in earnest.

But the mark of true greatness is recovering from your setbacks and knowing how to turn a negative into a positive.

The temptation may be to simply wave the white flag and all but throw their last 32 ties, but it is after all a trophy that is there to be won.

With that in mind, here are some reasons why both teams should go out to win Europe's secondary competition this season.

A Clean Sweep for Fergie
This just goes to show that even for a manager as successful and experienced as Alex Ferguson, who turns 70 at the end of the month, you are never too old to tread new ground.

The last time United were eliminated at the Champions League group stage six years ago they finished bottom of their group, thereby avoiding the perceived ignominy of dropping into what was then still the UEFA Cup.

As such, Ferguson is presented with a unique opportunity. He is entering a competition he has never guided United through before, and this is his chance to win another competition and complete a clean sweep.

He won the old European Cup Winner's Cup twice, once with Aberdeen and again with United, and has brought two more European Cups to Old Trafford. He has also won league titles and both domestic cup competitions in both England and Scotland, as well as the European Super Cup and Club World Cup.

Should he win the Europa League, he can genuinely lay claim to winning every domestic and European trophy he has ever contested as a manager.

It Is a Competition They May Never Be in Again
As mentioned before, United are very unlikely to be contesting the Europa League again in the near future, but neither are City.

Despite their early exit, City remain the most upwardly mobile team in world football. Even if they do not end the season by winning the Premier League, it looks as though it would take a meltdown of epic proportions for them not the qualify automatically for next season's Champions League.

They already have a squad which looks like it merely needs time together rather than another slew of expensive additions to turn them into true European heavyweights. The Europa League is unlikely to be on the cards for either Manchester clubs this time next year.

City Can Lay Down a Marker in Europe
Last season City ended a wait of more than three decades for a trophy when they won the FA Cup, beating United along the way. Just a few months later, after getting that monkey off their back, they are the form team of England.

Something similar happened at Chelsea once Jose Mourinho arrived there. The Blues' first trophy under the ownership of Roman Abramovich was the Carling Cup, and the following year they were champions.

If City can do something similar on the European stage by winning the continent's secondary trophy, it could help City transfer that winning mentality into UEFA competition.

Game Time for Squad Members
When you can boast as much talent right throughout your squad as the two Manchester clubs can, it is difficult to keep everyone happy.

Several star names have arrived at City pledging their commitment to the Sheikh Mansour 'project', only to leave when it is clear they are not going to be playing every week.

As for United, his latest crop of kids were eliminated from the Carling Cup last week by Championship club Crystal Palace, so the Europa League could provide another opportunity for some of the more promising among them to get another run out in the first team.

That is not to see that either side should field a side full of kids and castoffs in the latter stages of a major competition, but with the rigours of the season run-in on the home front and playing matches on Thursdays and Sundays, it would be useful to give some of the more important players a rest where possible.

They Could Face Each Other in the Final
This one doesn't need much in the way of explanation.

If United and City manage to avoid each other and make their way to the final in on May 9, tickets won't come much hotter than those for the showpiece at the Stadionul National in Bucharest.

It would also be an excellent advertisement for the Europa League as a competition, so often maligned as the poor relation to the Champions League, when in fact it is capable of delivering some great matches in its own right once the hard slog of the group stage is out of the way.

If one Manchester club won the Europa League by beating their local rival in the final, then perhaps they won't view the trophy as such a booby prize after all.

No Uefa action against Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp

Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp has not been charged by Uefa over the gesture he made to Shamrock Rovers fans.

Redknapp was barracked for much of his side's 4-0 Europa League win in Dublin on Thursday.

He appeared to aim a clenched fist at the home supporters midway through the second half.

But a Uefa spokesman said: "Nothing was mentioned in the official reports about this and Uefa has not opened any disciplinary proceedings."

Redknapp denied making an obscene gesture and TV cameras failed to pick up the incident.

"If you go and meet them afterwards they are probably lovely people. But they get together and shout a load of nonsense and that is football. That's life. I don't hold any grudges."

Spurs failed to qualify for the knockout stages after Rubin Kazan's 1-1 draw with PAOK Salonika.

Manchester City have complained to Uefa after their 2-1 Europa League win at Porto was marred by Yaya Touré and Mario Balotelli having racist abuse directed at them by the home support. Balotelli confirmed he heard what sounded like monkey noises aimed at him and Touré said he had picked up similar sounds.

City's complaint to Uefa's match delegate came after Balotelli was subjected to racist abuse when replaced by Sergio Agüero in the 77th minute. The striker told club officials that he had heard monkey noises.

Balotelli had been the apparent target of similar abuse in the first half, not long after Touré seemed to draw identical behaviour from the crowd when disputing a decision made by the referee, Cuneyt Cakir. His brother Kolo, an unused member of City's playing staff here, was said to have heard, and been shocked by, the abuse.

"That's why we all like the Premier League, because it never happens there," Yaya Touré told Sky, perhaps forgetting incidents this season. "Maybe in foreign countries they don't expect black players. I think in future it will be OK, they will change their minds and the game will become more open. Football is football and the fans come to enjoy the game, and we don't want things like this to happen."

Regarding Balotelli's abuse the midfielder said: "Mario is now able to control things like this and that is very important for the club."

Roberto Mancini, the City manager, said he had not heard the noises: "I didn't hear this because I was concentrating on the game, but I don't know. I think Mario and Yaya are strong. Nobody has spoken to me about it."

Mancini flies home to Italy for a break and so will leave his showdown talks with Carlos Tevez, the troubled Argentine striker who recently returned to the club to regain fitness, until the Italian is back in England.

Dutch police say they have arrested 76 Ajax supporters suspected of seeking a confrontation with Manchester United supporters the night before the clubs meet in the Europa League.

Police said that on Thursday the men were detained a day earlier under heightened security rules imposed by the Amsterdam mayor. Spokesman Ad Smit said the men were found to have a pair of brass knuckles, teargas, a club "and a large amount of narcotics". They were held overnight and will face varying fines of up to €600 (£500).

Another 54 supporters of the Belgian club Anderlecht, who were also thought to be seeking confrontation with United supporters, were detained and sent home. On Wednesday, 12 people were arrested for "football-related incidents".

Manchester City pounded Europa League defending champions Porto 4-0 on Wednesday to advance on a 6-1 aggregate score. Porto defender Nicolas Otamendi got the worst of the team's misfortunes on the day when teammate Maicon went to kick a high ball that Otamendi was trying to head away in the 63rd minute, resulting in a boot to the face for Otamendi.

The bloodied Argentine received treatment on the pitch before he had to be subbed off. Man City then added three unnecessary goals in the final 15 minutes. So at least Otamendi wasn't around for that.

While Milan fans already won for most visually wonderful display of the week, Schalke fans take the award for best expression of displeasure.

Schalke played Athletic Bilbao at the Veltins Arena for the first leg of its Europa League quarterfinal after it had been announced that tickets for the second leg in Bilbao, Spain would cost Schalke fans €90 per ticket. So the German fans unfurled banners during the match that read (in Spanish): "€90 per ticket = one euro per minute? Football is not phone sex!"

Athletic went on to win 4-2, which means any Schalke fans who pay such a high price to attend the second leg might be better off calling an S&M line.

Uefa has fined Porto £16,700 after their supporters racially abused the Manchester City striker Mario Balotelli in February.

City lodged a complaint after Balotelli was subjected to monkey taunts during the first leg of their Europa League last-32 tie at the Estádio do Dragão on 16 February. Porto have three days to appeal against the verdict.

There were outbreaks of monkey chanting throughout the game, which City won 2-1, but it appeared most noticeable when Balotelli was substituted 12 minutes from time.

The Porto coach, Vitor Pereira, claimed there may have been a misunderstanding and that fans were chanting "Hulk, Hulk, Hulk" at the Portuguese club's striker.

The European governing body imposed the punishment after a meeting of its control and disciplinary body. A Uefa statement read: "The Uefa control and disciplinary body has imposed a fine of €20,000 on FC Porto for racist conduct of their supporters at their first-leg round of 32 Uefa Europa League match against Manchester City FC on 16 February in Porto."

PRESIDEN UEFA Michel Platini melontarkan ide buat menghapus kompetisi Liga Europa. Sebagai gantinya, jumlah kontestan Liga Champions di fase grup ditambah menjadi 64 tim.

Bild melansir, di samping membentuk turnamen tunggal buat klub-klub Eropa, kabarnya ide Platini itu juga bertujuan mengurangi kerugian finansial. Pasalnya, pendapatan Liga Europa, yang notabene merupakan kompetisi kelas dua Benua Biru, jauh lebih kecil dibandingkan Liga Champions.

Bukan hanya itu, kompetisi ini juga kian mengundang banyak kritik sejak evolusinya dari UEFA Cup pada 2009.

Nah, lewat fakta itu, Platini berniat menambah jumlah tim yang berlaga di fase grup Liga Champions menjadi 64 tim pada 2016. Spanyol, Inggris dan Jerman masing-masing akan mendapat jatah enam tim.

Sementara klub-klub dari negara yang jarang tampil di kompetisi Eropa, seperti Latvia, Belarusia, dan Slovakia, akan memperoleh kesempatan lebih besar.(goal/ICH)

Police negligence may have caused death of Athletic Bilbao fan, Basque chief confirms

Rodolfo Ares, the Basque regional interior chief, has conceded that the area's police force may have acted negligently after it was confirmed that a football fan died due to injuries caused by a rubber bullet in the wake of Athletic Bilbao's 2-2 draw with Schalke last week.

The San Mames clash was followed by disturbances in the streets, and Inigo Cabacas, a 28-year-old fan was shot in the head before being rushed to hospital, and passing away four days later.

An autopsy revealed that Cabacas' death was caused by a rubber bullet, and Ares has promised an inquest into whether police acted properly in dealing with the crowd trouble.

"The autopsy shows that a rubber bullet was the cause [of death]. Therefore we have to establish whether protocols were adhered to or not," Ares told a press conference.

"It is unacceptable that something like this should happen in a democracy in 2012. It is essential to establish what happened and assume the consequences," Antonio Basagoiti, the regional Popular Party (PP) leader added.

Athletic Bilbao overcame the German side 6-4 on aggregate and will face Sporting Lisbon in the Europa League semi-final.

Valencia giving away Europa League semifinal tickets for free

The Europa League has been very entertaining at times this season, but it is still an overpriced consolation tournament. And so Valencia have decided to give season ticket holders free entry to the second leg of their Europa League semifinal against Atletico Madrid in an effort to ensure they have a full stadium as they trail 4-2 (thanks in part to the lovely Falcao goal above) after the first leg.

"It is an absolute necessity that there is an extraordinary atmosphere at the Mestalla that helps push the side towards the achievable aim of a place in the final in Bucharest," the 2004 UEFA Cup winners said in a statement on Friday.

Valencia fans, who will be reimbursed if they have already purchased a ticket, have whistled their team and under-fire coach Unai Emery after some inconsistent results in recent weeks.
