The Ten Best Charity Shield Games

FA Cup winners Chelsea take on league winners Manchester United this Sunday in the traditional season curtain raiser.

Over the years the competition has been played under various names and in different formats, and although it's considered something of a friendly, it's an opportunity to make a statement ahead of the new season.

We take a look at some of the memorable moments and classic matches from the Charity Shield.

1. In 1908 Manchester United (the First Division champions) and Queens Park Rangers (the Southern League champions) contested what is regarded as the first official Charity Shield. The match was drawn 1-1, so the game was replayed with United winning 4-0. The competition was preceded by the Sheriff of London (Dewar) Charity Shield, which saw the best professional and best amateur team come together and since 2002, the competition has been known as the Community Shield.

2. 1950 saw the Charity Shield contested by two non-club teams for the only time in the Cup's history. The England World Cup team took on an FA team that had toured Canada that summer.

3. The format that currently exists, of the league winner taking on the winners of the FA Cup, was established in 1930 - but when teams have won 'the double' it has caused quandaries over who should participate. In 1961 Tottenham became the first team of the 20th century to win the double, and as a result faced a Football Association XI for the Charity Shield.

4. In 1971 it was Arsenal's turn to do the double, but because of previously arranged pre-season friendlies, they couldn't even turn up themselves. The FA pitted Leicester City, who were Division Two champions against FA Cup runners-up Liverpool. Leicester would go on to lift the Shield with a 1-0 win. Pictured is Peter Shilton, who was a part of the winning Leicester side.

5. The highest scoring game was Manchester United's 8-4 victory over Swindon Town in 1911.

6. The Community Shield is now settled by penalties if the scores are level after 90 minutes. In the past, the Shield would be shared between the two sides if they couldn't be divided in normal time. The last time this happened was in 1991, when bitter rivals Arsenal and Tottenham drew 0-0.

7. 1974 saw the fixture played at Wembley for the first time (previously it tended to be played at the ground of one of the competing clubs). This in itself would have been noteworthy, but the on pitch activities of Kevin Keegan and Billy Bremner overshadowed the occasion. The pair were sent off in a fractious match between Leeds United and Liverpool - something that caused outrage and landed both players with a fine of £500 and an 11 match ban.

8. The 2001 fixture between Liverpool and Manchester United was the first Charity Shield match to take place under an enclosed roof. The game took place at Cardiff's Millennium Stadium, which hosted the fixture between 2001 and 2006 while Wembley was rebuilt.

9. The Community Shield has witnessed a hat-trick on four occasions. The last one to have been scored came in 1991 courtesy of Eric Cantona during his time at Leeds United. The match against Liverpool goes down as one of the most entertaining, with Leeds winning the match 4-3. The first ever hat-trick came in the first Charity Shield in 1908 when Jimmy Turnbull scored three for Manchester United in the replay against Queens Park Rangers.

10. The 1967 Charity Shield saw Tottenham goalkeeper Pat Jennings score a goal from his own penalty area against Manchester United at Old Trafford. Alex Stepney was the embarrassed keeper at the other end as the match finished 3-3. :malu:

After waiting 35 years for a trophy, Man City are chasing their second in three months against their neighbours in the Community Shield. Victory would doubtless be heralded as a new (blue) moon rising and evidence of City's title credentials – and indeed on 19 occasions the Shield winners have gone on to win the league, while 1978 winners Nottingham Forest and 1980 winners Liverpool went one better by winning the European Cup. But there's a warning from history: the 1937 League champions won the Shield and promptly got themselves relegated in 1938. The team? Manchester City...

The Shield - A brief history
TheFA.com

The FA Charity Shield, as it was formerly known, was first played for in 1908. It evolved from the “Sheriff of London Shield” fixture that had been played annually between a leading professional club and a leading amateur club.

In 1904, for example, famous amateurs Corinthians (as in “the Corinthian spirit”) took on FA Cup holders Bury…and beat them 10-3!

Manchester United, who had just become Football League champions for the first time, beat Southern League champions Queens Park Rangers to win the first-ever Shield fixture. United won 4-0 after a 1-1 draw, with both matches being played at Stamford Bridge, and no Shield match has ever been replayed since then.

In 1974 FA Secretary Ted Croker proposed that “The FA Charity Shield” (its name from 1908 until 2002) should be played at Wembley as a curtain-raiser to the new season. The match would feature the reigning League champions and FA Cup holders.
Prior to 1974, with the Shield a less prestigious fixture, the match was played at various club grounds and often involved teams who had won nothing at all.

The Shield has become one of the domestic season’s most important occasions and a crowd of 63,317 saw Arsenal beat Manchester United at Cardiff’s Millennium Stadium in August 2004. The match was broadcast right across the globe, with a potential worldwide TV audience of 270 million.

While Wembley acted as host, from 1974 to 2000, well over £5 million was distributed to charities by The FA, most of them nominated by the competing clubs.

The Shield is presented in partnership with The FA's Community partner McDonald's following previous sponsors One2One, AXA, Littlewoods and General Motors.

Shield Trivia

The highest-scoring Shield match took place in 1911 when Manchester United beat Swindon Town 8-4. In the following year, some of the Shield proceeds were donated to the Lord Mayor of London’s “Titanic” disaster fund.

Neither team involved in the Shield match in 1950 was a club side. A “World Cup Team” comprising players from the England squad for the World Cup in Brazil defeated a “Canadian Touring Team” comprising players from an FA party that had toured Canada in the same year – 4-2 at Stamford Bridge.

In 1967 Tottenham goalkeeper Pat Jennings scored a goal from his own penalty area against Manchester United at Old Trafford. Alex Stepney was the embarrassed ‘keeper at the other end and the match finished 3-3.

The Shield was taken to Wembley in 1974 and 67,000 saw Liverpool beat Leeds 6-5 on penalties after a 1-1 draw. On a hot afternoon when tempers became frayed, Billy Bremner and Kevin Keegan were sent off.

In the 1980s and early ‘90s the Shield was shared by the competing clubs for six months each when the match was drawn after ninety minutes. The penalty shoot-out was re-introduced in 1993.

Leeds and Liverpool played a seven-goal thriller in 1992. A rampant Eric Cantona netted a hat-trick for Leeds but was destined to become a Manchester United player during the season that followed.

Manchester United appeared in no fewer than seven Shield matches in the 1990s – winning four, drawing one and losing two. In 2003 they featured in their 22nd Shield match overall.
