Nice people. Nice town. Nice team. But how long can Roy Keane be... Mr Nice? :hammer:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Fergie, Clough, Sir Bobby, they all struggled... I still can be one of the best managers - Keane

Mr. Nice Guy ... ???

Roy Keane must not have passed a mirror in his three months in Suffolk with Ipswich Town. As he extolled the beguiling gentility of this corner of England yesterday morning, Keane said: 'I've not bumped into one angry person yet.'

Boom boom. This was the smiling, relaxed version of Keane, any dissatisfaction at the pace of transfer activity, or anything else at Portman Road, well disguised. Enjoy it while it lasts.

Four days before his 38th birthday, Keane said that he has 'settled well' into his new home and in praising the area's civility observed: 'I've not seen anyone have road rage, everyone is dead nice, enjoying life. I'm even getting nice myself.'

Everyone laughed, including Keane. It was that sort of morning. But he would not be the man of legendary impatience if there were not wariness about such niceness, a certain suspicion, and beneath the charm, sure enough, Keane senses danger.

'You can get sucked into a comfort zone in any walk of life,' he said, 'but particularly footballers and particularly at this football club, because it is such a nice area.

'I'm not knocking that but I think the team can be accused of being a nice team. Whenever we go away to places like Sheffield United, we might not have the ball for 60 or 70 per cent of the game - it's no use being nice then.'

A county attribute had swiftly been turned into a potential football fault. It was one reason why the Ipswich squad spent two preseason days at an army barracks, from which one player, Colin Healy, is yet to recover.

'I hope he's still alive somewhere,' Keane joked. 'It was a good idea, tough, a change of scenery. Lack of sleep, lack of food . . . it was good.'

The message to his players is: 'I can be a very demanding person and I don't make any apologies for that. Some of them have lost their way, some of them have fallen into the comfort zone, nice area, decent wages, very nice people and they get sucked into that, just coasting. They won't be coasting with me.'

Keane's concern is understandable. Even though it was a serene morning at Portman Road, where the statue of Sir Bobby Robson continued to attract a steady flow of mourners, the reality for Keane is that this mood will be a memory if Ipswich Town do not start well in their eighth consecutive Championship season, and do not sustain a challenge.

There have been signings, such as Healy and, from Manchester United's reserves, Lee Martin, but there need to be 'two or three more' according to the manager.

He was hopeful that three could arrive in time for Sunday's trip to Coventry. Watford striker Tamas Priskin is on his way after a medical yesterday, and Sunderland forward Daryl Murphy is a target.

But everyone knows Ipswich's biggest name is in the dugout and that is a reflection of the squad.

'I'm under no illusions,' he recognised, 'I'm here to get the team promoted.'

Then, cranking up the pressure on himself and all those around him, just as he did at Sunderland in his first managerial post, Keane spelled out a timetable of achievement.

'I have my own aims and if we don't get promoted this year or by the end of my contract here in two years' time then I would certainly class that as failure, without a shadow of a doubt,' he said.

Inspiration: Robson's success at Ipswich offers hope to Keane

'None of this mid-table business. Any half-decent manager can get a team to mid-table. I want to be one of the best managers around. That will come from experience. Sunderland will stand me in good stead because, despite one or two bad decisions, I think I did some decent stuff up there.'

He did. Even though he did not pick a team at Sunderland until September, in his first season on Wearside, Keane led them to the Championship title and promotion.

A repeat of that with Ipswich would aid the restoration of a reputation that took several hits last autumn as Sunderland declined alarmingly and Keane took to nurturing a beard. Then he walked out.

Does he have a point to prove, he was asked. 'We certainly need more points than we got last year,' he replied.

'Listen, I've come here for the challenge, like I said many times. I'm really looking forward to it.'

Over the past week, Robson has emerged as a source of optimism and consolation. He toiled in his first two years at Ipswich and endured calls from supporters for his head.

Keane attended a club barbecue the other night and said: 'From my point of view it was good to hear stories of Sir Bobby struggling in his first two or three years - it gives you a bit of hope.

'You automatically think these great managers - like Brian Clough at Leeds, Alex Ferguson in his first few years - that it was all about win, win, win. They struggled.

'When Sir Bobby was first here they were trying to get him out, a few supporters. When I say a few, I think there were about 10 - the biggest demo they ever had.

'And he was rewarded with a 10-year deal! So I think I need to lose a few games, I might get a 10-year contract. But great stories, that's what makes your football club.'

Keane blasts sloppy Ipswich

AFP - 9 August 2009 17:55

LONDON (AFP) - Ipswich manager Roy Keane slammed his side for sloppy defending after they lost their Championship opener 2-1 at Coventry City on Sunday.

Clinton Morrison bagged a brace for the Sky Blues but although Jon Walters sparked a mini-recovery by Ipswich the Suffolk side could not pinch an equaliser with home keeper Keiren Westwood making a number of fine stops.

Keane was furious as his side ensured that he will spend his 38th birthday on Monday brooding.

"We gave two very poor goals away and lacked sharpness in the final third but that will come in the coming weeks and months," said the former Manchester United firebrand.

"The first goal came from a goal-kick and the starting position of everyone was very poor.

"And the second one, Clinton has headed it at knee height. If you're a defender and he heads it that low you take his head off, it's as simple as that.

"I'll be down tonight but the day my appetite isn't affected by defeat I'll be out of the game. I am trying to learn from my experiences at Sunderland and not get too downhearted."

Coventry boss Chris Coleman said the win would lift some of the 'negativity' hanging over the club who were relegated from the Premiership back in 2001.

"Throughout pre-season there has been a lot of negativity around us," he said.

"I'm sure Roy will go back home and kick his cat because he hates losing but that's a feather in our cap," Coleman concluded.

On Saturday, Newcastle made a spluttering start to life in the Championship as the fallen giants scraped a 1-1 draw at fellow-relegated side West Bromwich Albion, Damien Duff levelling after Shelton Martis had put the Baggies ahead.

Cardiff City slammed promoted Scunthorpe 4-0 to celebrate moving to the new Cardiff City Stadium.

At Derby, Nigel Clough won the battle of the famous managerial sons as the Rams defeated Peterborough 2-1.

Clough, the son of former Nottingham Forest and Derby boss Brian, is in his first full season at Pride Park, while Peterborough are led by Darren Ferguson, son of Manchester United chief Sir Alex.

Gary Teale netted Derby's late winner after George Boyd's penalty for Peterborough had cancelled out Miles Addison's early opener.

Barnsley came from behind to draw 2-2 with Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough while Blackpool boss Ian Holloway's return to Loftus Road was spoiled by a late QPR equaliser in a 1-1 draw.

League One champions Leicester got their return to the Championship off to a great start as they beat Swansea 2-1 and Preston scored twice in the last eight minutes to draw 2-2 with Bristol City.

Reading were held to a goalless draw at the Madejski Stadium by Nottingham Forest who had Luke Chambers sent off.

Watford shared a 1-1 draw with Doncaster and Crystal Palace drew 1-1 with Plymouth.

10 classic Roy Keane rants

1) THE ONE THAT GOT ROY THROWN OUT OF WORLD CUP:
Keane temporarily quits international football after a monumental slanging match with Republic of Ireland boss Mick McCarthy, in front of his team-mates in Saipan. Keane had expressed his frustrations with the side's preparations for the 2002 World Cup to the Irish Times, telling them: "You've seen the training pitch and I'm not being a prima donna. Training pitch, travel arrangements, getting through the bloody airport when we were leaving, it's the combination of things. I would never say 'that's the reason or this is the reason', but enough is enough."

That interview led to a furious row, during which Keane told McCarthy. "Mick, you're a liar... you're a ****ing wanker. I didn't rate you as a player, I don't rate you as a manager, and I don't rate you as a person. You're a ****ing wanker and you can stick your World Cup up your arse. The only reason I have any dealings with you is that somehow you are the manager of my country! You can stick it up your bollocks."

2) THE ONE THAT LED TO ROY LEAVING MANCHESTER UNITED
Keane leaves Manchester United after attacking seven of his team-mates on the club's TV channel, MUTV. Keane's most stinging vitriol was reserved for Ferguson's record signing, Rio Ferdinand. "Just because you are paid £120,000-a-week and play well for 20 minutes against Tottenham, you think you are a superstar," Keane said. "The younger players have been let down by some of the more experienced players. They are just not leading. There is a shortage of characters in this team. It seems to be in this club that you have to play badly to be rewarded. Maybe that is what I should do when I come back. Play badly." Not surprisingly the video, originally scheduled as part of the Roy Keane Plays the Pundit slot on MUTV, was pulled at the insistence of manager Sir Alex Ferguson.

3) THE ONE WITH THE SNAPPED LIGAMENT
After Keane suffered a season-ending knee injury while trying to trip up Alf Inge Halaand in September 1997, the Irishman stewed for three years before exacting his revenge in the Manchester derby. "I'd waited long enough. I ****ing hit him hard. The ball was there (I think). Take that you cunt," he recalled in his autobiography in 2002. "And don't ever stand over me again sneering about fake injuries. And tell your pal [David] Wetherall there's some for him as well. I didn't wait for Mr Elleray to show the red card. I turned and walked to the dressing room."

4) THE ONE WITH THE PRAWN SANDWICH:
Keane hits out at sections of United's support in the wake of what he felt was a dire atmosphere in the club's Champions League clash with Dynamo Kiev in 2000. "Sometimes you wonder, do they understand the game of football?" he splutters. "We're 1-0 up, then there are one or two stray passes and they're getting on players' backs. It's just not on. At the end of the day they need to get behind the team. Away from home our fans are fantastic, I'd call them the hardcore fans. But at home they have a few drinks and probably the prawn sandwiches, and they don't realise what's going on out on the pitch. I don't think some of the people who come to Old Trafford can spell 'football', never mind understand it."

5) THE ONE WITH THE RUN-IN WITH BIG JACK:
Even as a teenager, Keane is not afraid to stand up to authority. Following a friendly against the United States in Boston in 1991, the Republic of Ireland team are allowed a night out. The next morning, with departure set for 7.30am, the team are kept waiting until 8am by Keane. A furious Jack Charlton says: "Nineteen years old, your first trip, do you have any idea how long we have been waiting?" Keane replies, without a hint of fear: "I didn't ask you to wait, did I?"

6) THE ONE WITH THE LETTER:
In 2000, Manchester United write a letter to fans blaming Roy Keane's new £52,000-a-week contract for the hike in season ticket prices. Roy, unsurprisingly, isn't happy. "I'm not one for holding grudges but this was a stupid mistake, a bad public relations exercise and something that should never have happened," he thunders. "I'm still waiting for my apology but I could be waiting a long time. The board have tried to explain what they meant, that it was part of a wider picture of trying to keep the fans informed, telling them the club wanted to rebuild and strengthen, which is why prices were going up. The fact is nobody should be singled out in a letter. It wasn't right. I felt everything was being laid at my door."

7) THE ONE WHERE PLAYERS ARE "PIECES OF MEAT"
It's 2002, and Jaap Stam's £16.5m departure to Lazio finds Roy unhappy. Again. "His transfer to Lazio illustrates how little power footballers have in the game. Contracts mean nothing," he fumes. "He has discovered that, to football clubs, players are just expensive pieces of meat. The harsh realities remain and when a club decide they want to sell there is little you can do once the wheels are in motion."

8) THE ONE WHERE ROY PROVES TO BE A FORTUNE TELLER:
Just prior to United's make-or-break Premiership showdown with Arsenal in 2002, Keane questions the desire of some of his team-mates and warns - prophetically as it turns out - the Red Devils could end the season without a trophy. "There are a lot of cover-ups sometimes and players need to stand up and be counted," he admits. "I'm not sure that happens a lot at this club. That's the least we should do. We shouldn't have to demand it from the players - they should be proud to play and give 100%. We're not asking for miracles. We're asking them to do what they should be doing. When players don't do that it's bloody frustrating. We're going to find it hard to win the league and if we end up with no trophies there's something wrong."

9) THE ONE WHERE HE BLAMES THE YOUNGSTERS
As United lose their grip on their Premiership title in 2004, Keane rounds on unidentified younger players, accusing them of not pulling their weight. "We have one or two young players who have done very little in the game," he spits. "They need to remember that and not slack off. They need to remember just how lucky we all are to play for Manchester United and show that out on the pitch."

10) THE ONE WITH THE IRISH BLAZERS:
In 2001, Keane hints he might quit the international stage if Republic of Ireland officials continue to treat the squad like second-class citizens. Fresh from a brilliant performance in a 4-0 thrashing of Cyprus, Keane blasts the FAI. "Where we trained last Monday, in Clonshaugh, was abysmal and it has been for as long as I've known it," he says. "I was fairly critical about our seating arrangements on the flight out here, when the officials were sitting in the first-class seats and the players were sitting behind. For me that's simply not right and it's not just because I'm playing for Manchester United. The priority has to be the team - and I don't think that has always been the case here."

Vieira totally bottles it in the match.

Roy Keane: Stars now want big money, a Bentley and a blonde, not to play for their country

http://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2010/02/26/article-1254117-085EA0FD000005DC-369_468x286.jpg

Roy Keane has backed Wayne Bridge’s decision to quit England and claimed: ‘International football is no longer the pinnacle for players.’

The former Manchester United and Republic of Ireland captain believes today’s stars are more interested in perks than caps.

Ipswich manager Keane said: ‘The pinnacle now is getting the big contract, the Bentley and the blonde.’

Keane famously stormed out of the Republic of Ireland squad on the eve of the World Cup finals in the Far East eight years ago after a bust-up with boss Mick McCarthy.

He admitted: ‘I have some identity with players who aren’t happy with the set-up.

‘The easiest thing would be to do what everyone is telling you to do and just sit there with your mouth shut.

‘They will say “Keep your head down, say nothing and keep the peace”. Do I sound like a man of experience?

‘But if you’re not happy you’re not going to perform to the best of your ability and ultimately you will let your team-mates down.’

Keane recalled his own dramatic walk-out and insisted players have to be content with their surroundings in order to perform at their best.

He went on: ‘The most important thing for any footballer is what goes on between the ears and people tend to forget that.

‘Do you want to go away for six weeks with other players you are not comfortable with and who are maybe showing you a lack of respect?

‘In my case it was the principle of working with people who questioned me and I said “I’m not putting up with it” — simple as that.

‘It chipped away at me. People say “Go with the flow” but you know what goes with the flow? Dead fish.

‘A player’s mindset is sometimes more important than winning the World Cup. You might think that’s crazy but if a player is not happy I would call it a brave decision to pull out.’

Keane is adamant Bridge’s withdrawal will not weaken Fabio Capello’s chances of
lifting the famous trophy in South Africa.

He added: ‘Let’s not kid ourselves — England are not short of left backs.’

Solskjaer : He's got the mentality for the United job
-sport.co.uk-

http://cache.daylife.com/imageserve/000me5yfFBeVc/610x.jpg

Although thus far at least Manchester United legend Roy Keane has fallen below his peerless standards set as a player in the management world, his old teammate Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, believes the tough-tackling former Old Trafford talisman has the mentality to succeed as a top manager.

The Norwegian hero and current reserve team coach at Manchester United, acknowledges that he and Keane “are close friends”, but were he a young player now, he would want to work under Roy Keane because “all he ever asks is 100% commitment”.

Prior to moving into management, initially with Sunderland and now with Ipswich Town, the notoriously competitive Keane was long tipped as Sir Alex Ferguson’s natural successor, and although he has not necessarily had everything his own way in the dugout, Solskjaer believes Keane has what it takes to manage at the very top of the game.

Speaking about his former captain, the Manchester United legend told the Independent: "He was an inspiring, motivating figure and a leader of the group.

"If I was a young player, I'd want to work under Roy Keane,

"Roy and I are close friends. He's a top human being.

"You know that picture people have of Roy as a ranter and a raver? Well, all he ever asks is 100% commitment. If you give that, you're one of Roy's favourites.

"I think he made a good move going to Ipswich, where he can work more on the quiet. If you go straight into a big club, the Premier League, it can be difficult.

"I remember talking to Roy and saying to him, 'you're going to be the number two at United' and he didn't want to be a number two. He wanted to learn by making his own mistakes.

"Roy's very humble, he knows he's not the finished article and may not be as a manager until 10 years from now. I'm not here to pick the managers of Manchester United, but I know he's got the mentality of being at a top club, yes.

While endorsing Keane’s claims to be a potentially great manager, Solskjaer suggests no matter what he achieves in the dugout, he will always fall shy of his achievements as a player, because the former striker believes his former captain was the best player he ever played with even amongst Manchester United’s galaxy of stars.

"But no matter where Roy manages, Ipswich, Sunderland, Manchester United, Juventus, AC Milan, he won't have the same quality (to work with) as Roy Keane, the player had.

"If I had to pick one player from the players I played with, and I was the manager, Roy would be the one.

“Of course, you'd want Paul Scholes, Ryan Giggs, David Beckham, Wayne Rooney, Ronaldo, Eric Cantona but if I had to pick one, it would be Roy."

Roy Keane is reborn as Irishman
thrives on the quiet life at Ipswich Town

Michael Walker | dailymail.co.uk

http://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2010/09/09/article-0-0B1BEAE3000005DC-191_468x286.jpg

Quiet and steady is not a phrase that has attached itself to Roy Keane down the years of glory and controversy but it felt appropriate at Portman Road on Thursday.

Keane has moved to the edge of the radar geographically and in terms of limelight. In return, Ipswich Town have begun to prosper.

It may be mere coincidence but it is a contrast with this time last season, when Keane was expected to jump start Ipswich’s automatic promotion, only to find they could not win a Championship game until October. Ipswich finished the season in 15th place.

http://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2010/09/09/article-1310624-0B1C953E000005DC-394_306x315.jpg

That sucked enthusiasm out of Portman Road and scuffed Keane’s reputation. Then owner Marcus Evans moved the goal posts financially. Captain Jon Walters has just been sold to Stoke. This August could have been even more tricky than last.

Yet, as they prepare to meet Portsmouth, Queens Park Rangers and Cardiff City in the next nine days, Ipswich are undefeated and Keane was nominated for manager of the month for August.

Keane set himself a two-year target for promotion on arrival at Portman Road in April 2009 and thinks that can still happen. ‘I’m a dreamer,’ he said.

His contract will expire next June, a fact he is ‘dead relaxed’ about. The Keane family are now in Suffolk and it would appear to agree with them all.

‘I’m more comfortable, absolutely,’ said Keane. ‘I came in last year and changes had to be made at the club — the dynamics, the energy, the players, some staff changes. I’m much more comfortable where I’m at. That doesn’t guarantee you winning football matches, but I think it gives you a slightly better chance.

‘Decent results help players. It’s like the opposite of last year, now we’ll travel on the bus on Friday in good spirits. There will be a good bit of banter, we’ll be ready and raring to go. Our fans travelling down will know that they’re seeing a different Ipswich now, a lot of energy, a lot of spirit. It’s good.

‘It was a strange old pre-season. There was a lot of doom and gloom, pre-season matches and tours that were supposed to go on didn’t, players were going out the door, but it’s created something among the players, a strange togetherness, shall we say. Other clubs have done it over the years, the Wimbledons and Millwalls.

‘That’s kind of suited us, whereas this time last year everyone thought we were going to walk the league, which was crazy with the squad we had. It was never going to happen.’

Keane said he is ‘OK’ with the new economics at Portman Road. ‘No matter what way you look at it, Ipswich haven’t been successful for eight, nine, 10 years and that takes its toll on the club financially,’ he said.

‘I’ve had to adapt as a manager, I’ve had to wheel and deal a bit more. I hope it’s made me better.’

At 39, Keane has time on his side, but he knows it is a big season for him.

Soon he will have 17-year-old striker Connor Wickham back. That will help.

Ipswich have so far resisted the inevitable offers, which indicates some muscle —although Keane was not sure it would be the case in the January transfer window.

It may be a different Ipswich and a different Keane but he was pleased to say of Wickham: ‘He certainly hasn’t changed, he’s not driving a Bentley yet.’

Henderson: "Approachable" Roy Keane was "great with me"

Sunderland youngster Jordan Henderson has praised his former boss Roy Keane, suggesting the Manchester United legend was anything but the ferocious man the media purport him to be.

Keane handed Henderson his Black Cats debut two years ago this month, and although Sunderland were embarrassed 5-0 away to Chelsea, the 20-year-old midfielder suggests the current Ipswich Town boss was very approachable and keen to offer up advice.

Henderson, who has been linked with a big money move to Keane’s former club, suggests he welcomed the Old Trafford hero’s notoriously high expectations during the starlet’s formative years as a professional football.

Speaking to the Times, Henderson described Keane as “approachable” adding: “He was great with me.

“I felt like I could go and talk to him and ask him where I needed to improve.”

Henderson’s form for Sunderland this season rightly earned him his first England cap, and although his performance did not match up to those regularly seen at the Stadium of Light this season, the midfielder revelled in the occasion and clearly wants to add to his first international appearance.

Speaking in the aftermath of the international friendly at Wembley, he said: “I’ve really enjoyed this week, for club and country. But I don’t want to be somebody who has played for England once. I’m not settling for it. I want to push on.”

“It was a tough game, another step up. France were very good. I think I could have done a little bit more. I’ll take the positives from it — the experience, what I’ll learn from it — but I think I could have taken a few more risks.”

Roy Keane: United had to buy Rooney for £28m so...

Ipswich Town boss Roy Keane has warned Connor Wickham’s Premier League suitors that they will have to pay the premium price for the Championship star, suggesting the prodigious forward is in the same bracket as Wayne Rooney in terms of potential.

Tottenham Hotspur, Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester United have all been strongly linked with Ipswich Town’s youngest ever player, but Keane suggests Wickham will not be sold on the cheap simply because he has earned covetous glances from some of England’s elite clubs.

The former Old Trafford talisman believes Wickham has the ability to be as good as Wayne Rooney, and therefore Ipswich would have to factor in the potential of the player into their valuation.

Keane told the Daily Mail: “There aren't many Connor Wickhams around. You've got to be careful not to get blasé about Connor and say "we'll take £7m or £8m for him".

“I have a certain figure in my head that we'd have to consider. I think Connor and his agent would have that as well.

“The big teams wouldn't be buying him for what he's doing now. They're going to buy him for what he can do in four or five years' time – his potential.

“Whether that's Tottenham or Liverpool or whoever, but United had to buy Rooney for £28m when he was 18.”

"Can Connor be as good as him? I think he has the potential, but that's up to the club. I don't think the club has had any concrete offers yet.”

Roy Keane Akhirnya Dipecat

Keane memenangi kompetisi Liga Champions UEFA, tujuh gelar juara Liga Premier Inggris dan empat Piala FA selama menekuni karir 12 tahun bersama Manchester United.

(ant/cax)

Keano is back ???

Former Manchester United captain Keane insists he is ready for management return
By Colin Young

Roy Keane has vowed to return to football management when the time and the club is right.

The former Manchester United captain has been out of work since January when he was sacked by Ipswich Town.

Keane, who has dismissed talk of working in Australia or New Zealand as 'nonsense’ says he is enjoying his longest break from the game, but could be ready to make a return next season. And he says he has learned mistakes from his spell at Portman Road.

He said: 'I want a club to take to the very top. Sunderland was so close, even in my third season there, we just had a few poor results which every manager goes through.'

`I am a young manager, and you are always learning tactically. I would have to look at my staff, that is a vital part of football management, and you need to work with good players, that helps. And we had some really good players at Sunderland.

'You need good characters. I would learn from my mistakes particularly at Ipswich and I think potentially I could be a good manager. But potential is one thing. Going out and doing it is something very different.

'If you don’t make mistakes, you never learn. I had a three month break after Sunderland and Ipswich felt right. My only regret is I agreed to take it before I met the chief executive, I won’t be doing that again.

'Sometimes the DNA doesn’t work and doesn’t suit. Look at Roy Hodgson, and I’m not comparing myself to him, but him at Liverpool, the dynamics were not right and Ipswich in the end was just not right and the chief executive role is vital when you are working with someone so closely.

'I have been out for a couple of months and I am enjoying my bit of time off because part of my problem, is when I am involved, I am involved 100 per cent and that takes its toll on you; not that I am going to keel over but it is time to re-charge the batteries and take stock and see what is round the corner.

'A club might give me an opportunity but if it doesn’t come I have some freedom and I will make the most of that.’

Keane has yet to venture to Old Trafford, or to watch the Republic of Ireland at the new Aviva Stadium, but he has been an avid viewer of the conclusion to Manchester United’s season, watching most of their games on television. 'With the sound turned down,’ he added.

The former United skipper says Sir Alex Ferguson’s current group can beat Barcelona in the Wembley final to lift the club’s third European crown.

He added: 'At Wembley, the United fans will take over the stadium. In a one-off game, with fans behind them, of course they can do it.

'They will have to do really well to beat this Barcelona team and my concern would be not picking up injuries. The Barcelona starting XI is brilliant, outstanding, but their squad is probably not as strong as United’s.

'If they come through the end of their season fit, and they might get to rest players if they wrap up the Spanish league, they can rest United and would do well to get a result.’

Keane: Fans Can Help United Beat Barca
May 11, 2011

Roy Keane reckons that our fans will be able to make the difference between Manchester United and Barcelona in the European Cup final at Wembley.

Keano also reckons that whilst Barca’s starting team is brilliant, their squad isn’t as strong as United’s, so injuries could be key to who wins.

“At Wembley, the United fans will take over the stadium. In a one-off game, with fans behind them, of course they can do it,” he said.

“They will have to do really well to beat this Barcelona team and my concern would be not picking up injuries. The Barcelona starting XI is brilliant, outstanding, but their squad is probably not as strong as United’s.”

Why Sheffield United Should Be Keane On Roy as Manager Search Begins
Jason Mellor

He may come with more baggage than Cork Airport handles in a year, but that won't stop some chairman taking the plunge with Roy Keane, who has announced his desire to jump back onto the managerial merry-go-round. Are you watching, Sheffield United?

The Irishman readily admits he doesn't know whether it will be another six months or six years before he's handed the chance to repair a coaching reputation somewhat tarnished by a season-and-a-half of under-achievement at Ipswich Town - if it's the latter, on balance, the phone probably isn't going to ring.

That the silent treatment should be the 39-year-old's fate is unlikely, even given his idiosyncrasies, out-spoken manner and ability to rub people, friends and foe alike, up the wrong way.

"If the right club gives me an opportunity then good, but if it doesn't I have some freedom and I'll make the most of that," said the Manchester United legend, who was shown the door at Portman Road in January with Town struggling in the Championship, the division he led Sunderland out of at the first attempt in 2007, having inherited a team at the foot of the table.

In an interview with Cork Radio, he added: "Who knows, If I'm out for six months or six years, then so be it. They say if you want to make god laugh, then tell him your plans."

Never one afraid to speak his mind, Keane left the Stadium of Light two-and-a-half years ago after failing to see eye to eye with Ellis Short when the US billionaire took sole charge, and he also had his moments with the Ipswich hierarchy.

But that won't be enough to stop another chairman offering him a route back into the game, and it would be no surprise if that occurred sooner rather than later.

Whether that's in the Premier League is open to question, and despite his largely unhappy experience with the Tractor Boys, his record with Sunderland shows he knows what it takes to guide a club into the top flight.

Keane's box office nature will also endear him to many club owners who are anxious to boost crowds and increase their publicity, both guaranteed when the Irishman, who remains one of the biggest names in the game, takes charge.

He added: "I've been out couple of months and I'm enjoying my bit of time off because part of my problem is that when I'm involved, I'm involved 100 per cent.

"I'm very driven and that takes its toll on you. Not that I'm going to keel over, but it's been time to re-charge the batteries and take stock and see what's round the corner."

The recently-vacated manager's post at Sheffield United would fit the bill, and certainly, albeit a division below and on tighter finances, offers similar opportunities to way he came in at Sunderland, then another under-performing big club that had fallen on hard times, and turned things round in an impressively swift manner.

The Steel City being just a short hop over the Pennines from his Cheshire base would also negate one of the reasons behind his exit from Wearside after Sunderland owner Short raised questions over not only his managerial style but the amount of time he spent in the north-east.

Keane, who laughed-off talk of a move to coach in Australia after a recent vacation Down Under, added: "When accusations are made against you, and you're told where to live or are accused of doing one day week, the time is right to go.

"The Sunderland fans were brilliant, but as usual, they don't know the whole truth. Sometimes you feel you want the truth out there but I have kept my mouth shut.

"There was stuff going on in the background I certainly wasn't happy about. People are quick to speculate or tell lies, to slag me off. People might think I'm a machine and don't get hurt, but I was hurt."

After relegation to League One that ultimately cost Micky Adams his job, Sheffield United are a club that are also hurting right now as they contemplate a return to the third tier for the first time in almost a quarter of a century.

If appointing Adams showed little ambition on their part, a move for Keane would be exactly the opposite and would send out a message of intent that they are ready to bounce back at the first attempt.

It might take a few compromises on both sides, but it's a job that would suit Keane down to the ground - a fact which chairman Kevin McCabe has surely taken note.

The Blades are a club with huge potential, a large and passionate support from a city that lives and breathes its football and in its current state of malaise, let's face it, Keane couldn't do much worse.

He added: "I want a club to take to the very top. At Sunderland we were so close. I'm a young manager, you're always learning tactically, and learning from your mistakes. Potentially I could be a good manager but potential is one thing. Going out and doing it something very different."

It would be an intriguing prospect. There's the opportunity to be installed in plenty of time for pre-season to shape the squad in an attempt to stamp his authority on the club by building from the bottom with a virtual blank canvas to work with. It doesn't quite tick all the boxes, but it's not too far off. Watch this space. Roy must be Keane on that.

Roy Keane the REAL Captain Fantastic at Manchester United
Stuart Mathieson

Roy Keane ripped up the three banal questions a PR lady had allowed me to ask him, chucked it in the bin and said: “We are both adults, ask me anything you like. If I don’t like your question, I won’t answer it.”

What followed was half-an-hour of explosive and honest answers – and he didn’t shirk one question. Brilliant copy for the M.E.N.

I had been granted an interview with the United captain to promote the DVD of his infamous autobiography in 2002.

I had to submit a list of questions I wanted to ask Roy. Most were scrubbed out and that left me with those three pathetic posers.

But Keane is his own man and what I initially thought was going to be a waste of time – simply a promotional piece – turned into an excellent read.

The Irishman did, however, insist it was a one-hit interview – meaning it all had to go in one edition of the paper.

Unfortunately, the M.E.N. Sport desk inconveniently forgot that instruction and a second piece – from the equally interesting leftovers – went in 24 hours later.

The postscript to that was a few days later I turned up at the Reds’ Carrington training HQ to be met with a volley of vitriol as Keane vented his spleen. The charming Dr Jekyll of a few days earlier had turned into the chilling Mr Hyde.

If my memory serves me correctly, Keane never spoke to me again in a one-on-one situation. Cross the former United captain and you were done for.

At that moment, I knew exactly how Mick McCarthy, Patrick Vieira and Alf Inge Haaland felt.

Keano has been voted on this website as United’s best captain.

It is the prelude to a mini-serialisation in this paper coming soon of a book by author Simon Wadsworth, called The Captains Club. It’s a history of Reds skippers since the Second World War.

Sir Alex Ferguson’s leader from 1997 to 2005 has walked the online poll, leaving “Captain Marvel” Bryan Robson way back in second place – and everyone else nowhere.

My own personal incident with Keane hasn’t coloured my judgment, nor have some of the darker and infamous on and off-field episodes forced me to seriously consider other candidates.

The driven midfielder was my number one.

Ask United fans and they will all have their standout memory of why Keane was the best Old Trafford leader ever.

My own personal moment that summed him up as an on-field inspiration won’t come as a major surprise – it was the selfless display in Turin in 1999 against Juventus.

Trailing the mighty Italians in Italy 2-0 after 11 minutes of the Champions League semi-final and 3-1 down on aggregate, Keane cemented himself in Old Trafford folklore.

Picking up a yellow card that ruled him out of any possible final in Barcelona, lesser figures would have brooded, become emotionally wrecked and a passenger.

Not Keane. He almost single-handedly drove the Reds to the Nou Camp and kept the Treble alive by pulling a goal back against Juve and then inspiring the Reds to victory.
It was an astonishing act of leadership.

Other United fans recall the Highbury tunnel incident with Patrick Vieira in February, 2005.

It’s a classic piece of Sky TV footage as the Gunners skipper was challenged by United’s captain for picking on Gary Neville. The seething Keano was ready to kick off in the confines of tight Highbury tunnel.

Vieira looked absolutely stunned by the fury and his Arsenal side winced and wilted.

If ever a match was won before the opening whistle it was that one as a fired-up United went on to win a highly-charged match 4-2.

There was also the vein-bulging verbal attack on referee Andy D’Urso in 2000 and the sickening assault on Alfie Haaland in the Old Trafford derby in 2001.

Never afraid to speak his mind on and off the football pitch, Keane could also be a journalist’s dream in post-match interviews.

He let fly full barrels when an issue was simmering away, leading to unforgettable copy like the ‘prawn sandwich’ rant and the post-Bayern Munich Euro quarter-final exit in 2001 that prompted a brutally honest appraisal of how the Treble winners were on the slide.

You could marvel often and wince occasionally at Keane’s captaincy but for the United public he stands head and shoulders among some of Old Trafford’s most revered names and leaders.

Prediksi EPL 2011-2012 Milik Roy Keane

(sun/lex)

Roy Keane Kandidat Pelatih Timnas Islandia

Bola.net - Mantan pemain Manchester United, Roy Keane, menjadi kandidat pelatih timnas Islandia.

Federasi Sepak Bola Islandia (IFA) seperti dilansir Sportinglife sedang mencari pelatih baru, dan Keane menjadi salah satu kandidat kuat pengganti pelatih sebelumnya, Olafur Johannesson.

(spo/zul)

http://www.kickoff.com/news/24384/roy-keane-says-he-is-still-hurt-at-the-abruptness-of-his-exit-from-manchester-united.php

Keane 'hurt' at Man United exit

Roy Keane says he is still hurt at the abruptness of his exit from Manchester United after 12 years at the club.

The former United captain left the club 'by mutual consent' in 2005 after what was reported to be an acrimonious dispute with manager Sir Alex Ferguson.

And after six years, Keane has finally made the admission. "When I left Manchester United, it hurt me. I had a disagreement with the manager.

"I went in at 9 and by ten past nine I was out. That really hurt me," Keane said on Monday night in Nigeria at an event organized by Guinness for it's GuinnessVIP mobile platform users.

Keane also added that his relationship with Ferguson was not as cozy as it was made out to be "People misunderstood my relationship with the manager. They think I met him every morning for tea. It wasn't like that.

"He knew exactly what he wanted of me, and I knew it. He didn't have to say anything. That's why he got me, and when he made me captain, it was an honour for me to be captain of the greatest club in the world."

The former Reds captain says he misses the camaraderie of the United dressing room, "I miss the feeling of being with lads. The feeling in the team bus after a big win, or even after a loss knowing you had given everything.

"I still keep in touch with most of the lads. Ruud (van Nistelrooy), Nicky Butt, and the others.

"For me it was an honour to play alongside some of these players. We had people in there you could go to war with.

"Sometimes when we had a big game, there was no need to say anything. You just looked in their eyes and you knew they were ready."

Keane will be available for a live online chat on Guinnessvip.mobi from 2200 hours Nigerian time on Tuesday.

Football Icons Visit Nigeria: Photos from the Guinness VIP, An Evening With Marcel Desailly & Roy Keane
By Damilare Aiki

Marcel Desailly & Roy Keane On Stage at The Event

The Guinness VIP “An Evening with” event which saw two great footballers, Marcel Desailly and Roy Keane in one place. It was a once in a lifetime opportunity to spend an evening engaging in football conversations with the two football legends.

The event didn’t come as a surprise to most football fans as Guinness has always shown over the years that it understands clearly that football is Nigeria’s number one passion and has always looked for opportunities to create unique and unforgettable experiences that will feed this passion. Not satisfied with being a sponsor of the Super Eagles and official broadcast sponsor of the English Premier League, the brand has gone on to create other platforms to deepen its conversation with its consumers and extend their relationship with the brand, the game of football and other football aficionados.

The first of such platforms was the Guinness VIP, a social networking platform where football lover all across the country can congregate to enjoy access to football news, chat, opinions and hold conversations with ex-internationals and popular football presenters and analysts while also being in the frame to win prizes and special invites to events such as “Guinness The Match” and “An Evening With”. In less than a year, over a million people are already members of what has become Africa’s largest social media network, a clear attestation to the fact that Guinness was spot on in discerning that football fans across the country were yearning to extend football conversations and relationships beyond physical and geographic confines.

On Monday 19th September 2011 at the Eko Hotel and Suites, which was the venue of the event Marcel Desailly and Roy Keane were right here on Nigerian soil. Before they came onstage, a few highlights of their time as players were shown on the big screen. It is easy to forget just how good they both were in their prime. Roy Keane was Manchester United’s driving force for a decade, helping them to dominate the Premiership and Marcel Desailly won everything there was to win as a player, with AC Milan and the French national team. Both played for Manchester United and Chelsea, and it was a nice touch by the organisers to have this event the day after a very exciting game between their former clubs at Old Trafford. It was interesting to see Marcel Desailly prefer to stand up for the duration of the interactions.

Marcel Desailly talked about his desire to be a national team coach, preferring it to the constant pressure of club management. After failing in his bid to become the coach of the Black Stars of Ghana (he was born in Ghana), he said ‘my time will come’. Roy Keane is the former manager of Sunderland and Ipswich and while he noted that there is a life after football, he shared that he missed the madness of coaching.

http://cdn.bellanaija.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/IMG_8021-600x400.jpg
Host Charles Anazodo welcomes the duo of Marcel Desailly and Roy Keane

Neither man believed that players were to blame for their high transfer fees and wages, because that is the way the market is. Marcel Desailly noted that the early exposure of young players to a lot of money makes them more difficult to handle than players of earlier times.

A couple of video clips were played from the Manchester United vs Chelsea game at Old Trafford.Roy Keane praised Chelsea’s positivity but said that in the end, only the result really mattered, and that was where Sir Alex Ferguson’s teams excelled. He was supportive of Fernando Torres, making the observation that had Chelsea won the game, there would have been less focus on his miss. Marcel Desailly’s thoughts were that he was low on confidence, like Shevchenko before him, and that he needs the right tactical set-up in which to express himself.

Some questions asked took every one down memory lane. Roy Keane spoke about how leaving Manchester United hurt him, with his final conversation lasting just ten minutes. He also admitted that because he always played the game on the edge, it contributed to his injuries and also meant he wasn’t always the best role model. A guiding principle of his playing style was to ‘keep things simple’, passed on to him by Brian Clough who coached him at Nottingham Forest, leaving the fancy stuff to others. He said his closeness to the manager was exaggerated, as he was just like any other player. When asked what if he would rather be a player or a coach, he said the difference was like chalk and cheese. He would play forever if he could, because coaching is so hard!

Marcel Desailly recounted how settling in England was more difficult than he thought, because of big strikers like Alan Shearer who were always elbowing, pushing and holding. He is a little pessimistic about the growth of the game on the continent, due to lack of infrastructure which made a lot of African players move to other countries, but pledged to continue working to improve this.

All told, it was an enjoyable evening organized by Guinness, and further confirmation of their commitment to bring football greatness to an eager Nigerian market. Long may it continue!

Roy Keane: In from the cold
By Daniel McDonnell

Roy Keane looks to be gearing up for a return to the spotlight after a prolonged period in the wilderness

http://www.independent.ie/multimedia/archive/00967/Roy-Keane_967943t.jpg

ALMOST nine months have passed since Roy Keane's sacking from Ipswich and we are still waiting for the rebirth.

This is the Corkman's longest break from the limelight since he packed his bags and left Mayfield for Nottingham 21 summers ago. Miraculously, he has succeeded in finding anonymity again.

Certainly, it's a quieter world without his vocal presence. But, as much as football misses Keane, the indications are that the feeling is mutual. The return is overdue.

In the past fortnight, he has emerged from hibernation. An appearance on the ITV panel for the Champions League final in May was considered to be something of a novelty, a one-off, yet he was back in the pundit's chair for Manchester United's trip to take on Benfica.

That was followed by a trip to Nigeria on a gig organised by Guinness. He joined Marcel Desailly onstage for two lengthy question and answer sessions, happy to oblige requests and press the flesh.

Then came a third public outing, a trip home to Cork where he popped along to watch his local side lock horns with Derry City in the EA Sports Cup final.

Perhaps that was the most significant outing of the lot. Keane is a sports fan who likes to take in a Munster game when possible, but his trip to Turner's Cross is a reminder that he is keeping in touch with the next generation of players in case a job opening pops up over the horizon.

Circles

Keane is moving in football circles again. The biggest change in the last nine months has been geographical. After relocating to East Anglia to fully commit to the Ipswich job, the premature end left the 40-year-old out of work and away from the action.

In the short term, that was no harm, for it allowed time to pick up the pieces from a promising job that developed into a disaster.

The seclusion eventually became a hindrance, so, a couple of months ago, he moved back to the Manchester area.

With the north-west of England being such a football hotbed, numerous clubs are in close proximity. There are ample first-team and reserve games that he can go along and watch without major attention. There is also an opportunity to chat to people around the game and get a handle on who is coming and going.

Nevertheless, he retains old fashioned principles when it comes to certain aspects of his situation. He is aware that turning up at a ground when a manager is under pressure could be interpreted as angling for a job.

There have been no sightings of Keane at Nottingham Forest, but it's inevitable his name will be bandied about with Steve McClaren on the brink. Don't expect to see the Corkman taking his seat at the City Ground as the pressure intensifies. Of course, it might be optimistic to suggest Keane as a serious contender, given how the Ipswich experience has damaged his stock.

On his flight home from Lisbon after the Benfica match, onlookers say that Keane was in a chatty mood, speaking about the upcoming trip to Nigeria and a desire to take the chance to travel the world while he can.

In April, there was a holiday in Australia, although that trip grew into a circus when it was speculated that he was Down Under to become the new boss of Melbourne Victory; his old Manchester United team-mate Mark Bosnich fuelled it by inaccurately tweeting that a deal was imminent.

It was a nonsense story.

Still, he may have to broaden his horizons to find employment. A recent link to the vacant manager's job at Iceland was genuine, with Keane understood to be impressed by the respectful manner in which they approached him.

He stalled before an advanced meeting about the position and there's no doubt that accepting the role would represent a huge step down on his ambitions. That sentence is couched in the present tense because the Icelandic FA has yet to appoint a new man and the line of contact could still be reopened.

Keane was grilled on his future intentions in Nigeria, covering a range of topics in Lagos and the nearby city of Ibadan.

"He was very accommodating, but frank and honest in his responses," said one Nigerian official who was present. "He said he's happy to do more of these events, to travel around and see the other side of the game. But he is desperate to return to the management."

Desperate is a strong word to use when it comes to Keane, who is used to calling the shots.

His Ipswich experience was souring. By and large, he has kept his counsel on what unfolded at Portman Road.

Keane believes that the club never followed through on promises that were made upon his appointment. There was a shortage of cash to bring in targets, and he was frequently outbid when it came to the crunch. His working relationship with CEO Simon Clegg was poor and, speaking in May, there was a thinly concealed reference to that issue.

"My only regret is I agreed to take it before I met the chief executive," he said, while reflecting on his second management job. "I won't be doing that again."

His standards are hard to live up to in the modern game. As his exile continues, the perception that he is damaged goods will grow and it will be hard to walk into a club with a list of demands when they might feel they are doing a favour by taking a punt.

But he may just have to swallow his pride to get back on the carousel. At his pomp, Keane spoke wearily of TV panellists who made a living from sitting on the couch.

However, if no acceptable post crops up in the near future, then it's likely that he will become a more regular presence on ITV's Champions League coverage. Station insiders feel that he is growing into the job and would love to develop his profile.

They know it would be the fallback option, a recognition that Keane is still attracted by the challenge of succeeding in management. His period of obscurity can only last for so long.

Roy Keane played for Nottingham Forest for three years before moving to Man Utd in 1993

Keane favourite for Forest

Nottingham Forest have received over 40 applications for their vacant manager's post, and are hoping to have Steve McClaren's successor in place before Saturday's trip to face Coventry.

Roy Keane looks the man most likely. The former Forest and Manchester United midfielder was backed so heavily last week that bookmakers William Hill suspended the market - having taken a £5,000 wager at odds of 2-1. Judging by the chatter on web forums Keane would be a popular choice with the fans.

As for other potential candidates, we've already seen three ruled out of the running. MK Dons' Karl Robinson said he was flattered to be linked to the job, but is intent on staying put, while Peterborough chairman MacAnthony confirmed there had been no approach for his manager Darren Ferguson and former Forest boss Paul Hart, currently employed at Charlton, has ruled out a return in the capacity of technical director.

With Forest unable to afford a hefty compensation fee, it seems most likely they will opt for a currently unattached manager - with Keane fitting the bill perfectly.

Keane hungry for managerial return
By Harry Harris, Football Correspondent

Former Sunderland and Ipswich boss Roy Keane says he is ready to return to football management, despite being unimpressed with the values of modern players.

Keane, 40, has been out of work since being sacked by Ipswich in January after a difficult 20-month spell at Portman Road, but he is champing at the bit to get back into management - as long as it is the "right challenge" for him.

"It has been eight or nine months since I left Ipswich, and its gone pretty quickly," Keane said in an interview with the League Managers Association. "Now I have to say, that if the right challenge came around the corner I would take it.

"I have enjoyed my time off and when you have been in the game with the kind of intensity I have done for the past 20 years, you do need time to re charge your batteries and step back. But now if the right challenge comes up, I'll be ready for it."

Keane earned a reputation for being a no-nonsense footballer who was obsessively dedicated to his profession during a glittering career with Manchester United, eight years of which were spent as Sir Alex Ferguson's captain at Old Trafford.

The Irishman expects the same level of intensity from those playing under him, though he believes the approach that characterised his playing career is increasingly rare in the modern game.

"As a player I led by example, and that came easy to me, I wouldn't ask any player to do anything I wouldn't do," Keane said.

"It's not so easy as a manager. Management is different. You have to have the staff you can trust, and so on, but you also want certain values from your players.

"Unfortunately players don't have the same values they used to, and this is something I have noticed changing over the past 20 years.

"That makes it very hard for a manager to manage. You can put up with mistakes, whether they are on the field or even off it, but you cannot understand, you cannot get your head around players who come into work and are not prepared to roll their sleeves up."

Keane was managed by two British football greats in Ferguson and Brian Clough, and the former United skipper says he is still heavily influenced by the style of the latter - who gave him his break in English football with Nottingham Forest.

"Everybody is different and I've seen if from some different managers over the last 20 years, Brian Clough, Sir Alex and Gordon Strachan, all different in their ways.

"In my experience of Brian Clough in my three years with him, he kept everything simple, he understood what it meant to be a manager, his man-management skills were fantastic, make no mistake about that.

"The game has changed, of course, it has become about sports science, analysis of the opposition, diet, but Brian Clough was a genius and he would have taken all that stuff with a pinch of salt and remembered what the game was about; it's about passing and movement, keeping it simple and a good attitude."

Keano On Playing For United Again, The Dressing Room and That Derby
October 21, 2011 123 Comments

Roy Keane has spoken to the BBC about his thoughts on the Manchester derby ahead of Sunday.

On playing again

“When football is in your blood or you’ve played for a great club like Man United, you still have your days where you go ‘I’d give anything to go back and play in one of those games, anything.’”

On the dressing room on derby day

“It’s fabulous, absolutely brilliant. That’s what you miss. That’s what you want to go back for. It’s pretty easy for the manager. Obviously he’ll have to pick his eleven but he can leave the rest to the players. I didn’t like too much chat. Everyone thinks I was a ranter and a raver, I certainly wasn’t. The players know, there’s that feeling in the air, that this is the game. You make sure you’re not going to lose it. When I play for United, we had a good record against City.”

On the dressing room after the derby

“I never lost a derby, thank God. Every time you play a big game there’s the fear of losing, but it’s a nice fear, it’s why you make sure you don’t lose. After you win some of the big games, I was never one for celebrating too much.”

On City or Liverpool

“With the progress City have made, if I was still playing for United I’d City would probably be the game I’d want to win more. When I was a player, City weren’t always in the top league, so it was always the Arsenal game for me, but City must be the game for the players now.”

On that derby in 93/94

“It was pretty good. Particularly because we’d been two goals down. I still remember the game like it was yesterday. I’d missed a couple of good chances. I was through one on one with Tony Coton. But we had some great players, like Cantona and Giggsy, so we knew we were never out of the game. When it went to 3-2, yeh, that was pretty good.”

Keane Kritik Balik Ferguson
Okdwitya Karina Sari - detikSport

Keane: United Butuh Frank Ribery

http://assets.kompas.com/data/photo/2011/12/19/1143441620X310.jpg

MU akhir musim lalu memang tertarik mendatangkan Ribery ke Old Trafford.

The Lions - julukan Millwall - diberitakan akan segera memecat manajer Kenny Jackett.
