Edwin misses season's start

The Reds have been dealt a blow ahead of the new season after United confirmed that Edwin van der Sar has been sidelined for the start of the 2009/10 campaign.

The 38-year-old Dutch goalkeeper has this week undergone surgery on a broken finger and bone in his left hand, and will be out for up to eight weeks.

Van der Sar suffered the injury saving a penalty from Danijel Pranjic in United's 7-6 shoot-out defeat to Bayern Munich in the pre-season Audi Cup tournament in Germany.

The prognosis means that van der Sar won't be back to full fitness until the end of September, and therefore unlikely to be available for selection till either the Arsenal match on Saturday 29 August, or against Tottenham Hotspur a fortnight later after the international break.

It is frustrating news for Sir Alex, especially as van der Sar was so important to United's defensive solidarity last season. However, Ben Foster signed a new contract in July and Sir Alex said at the time that "[he] is seen as one of the best young goalkeepers in England and we genuinely see him as a successor to Edwin."

This could be the opening Foster has waited so patiently for, although Tomasz Kuszczak will also see this as an opportunity to prove his worth. Sir Alex's selection will be an interesting one for Wednesday's friendly against Valencia and at Wembley this weekend against Chelsea in the Community Shield. manutd.com

Van Der Sar lewatkan awal musim

MU dikejutkan dengan sebuah kabar sebelum dimulainya musim baru setelah dikonfirmasikan bahwa United Edwin van der Sar akan absen pada permulaan musim 2009/10.

Kiper asal belanda yang berusia 38 tahun ini minggu ini telah mengalami operasi pada jari dan patah tulang di tangan kiri, dan diperkirakan harus beristirahat selama 8 minggu.

Van der Sar menderita cedera setelah menahan penalty Danijel Pranjic saat United dikalahkah 7-6 oleh Bayern Munchen di pra-musim Audi di turnamen Piala Jerman.

Prognosa ini mengindikasikan van der Sar baru akan kembali pulih dari cederanya ini sampai akhir September, dan bahkan tidak akan didaftarkan sebagai pemain cadangan hingga pertandingan melawan Arsenal pada 29 Agustus atau Tottenham Hotsupr setelah rehat internasional.

Ini kabar yang buruk bagi sir Alex, khususnya bahwa Van der sar sangatlah penting dalam soliditas wilayah pertahanan United dimusim lalu. Manchester - Kabar tak sedap menghampiri Manchester United jelang musim baru dimulai. Kiper utama mereka, Edwin Van der Sar, cedera dan dikabarkan akan absen selama delapan pekan.

Kiper gaek berusia 38 tahun itu akan menjalani operasi sebagai akibat patahnya tulang jari dan lengan kirinya. Oleh karena itu ia pun tak akan mengawal gawang MU untuk beberapa partai pembuka di awal musim, termasuk laga Community Shield akhir pekan ini.

Dikabarkan oleh situs resmi The Red Devils, Van der Sar harus beristirahat selama delapan pekan. Itu artinya MU tak akan diperkuat olehnya selama dua bulan ke depan. Van der Sar diperkirakan baru akan kembali pada akhir September atau awal Oktober.

Dengan absennya Van der Sar, maka ini menjadi kesempatan bagi dua deputinya untuk maju ke depan. Dua deputi yang dimaksud adalah Ben Foster dan Tomasz Kuszczak. Baik Foster ataupun Kuszczak sama-sama telah mendapatkan porsi untuk bermain pada laga-laga pra-musim.

Menarik untuk ditunggu siapa di antara keduanya yang akan menjadi pilihan utama Sir Alex Ferguson. Namun, jika mengingat ucapan Sir Alex yang mengatakan bahwa Foster telah disiapkan sebagai pengganti Van der Sar, kiper asal Inggris itu bisa jadi mendapatkan kans lebih besar ketimbang Kuszczak.

lagian VDS kan emang mau pensiun 2010 nanti.
this is his las season CMIIW.
udah saatnya Kusczak dan Foster memperbanyak jam terbang mereka.
soal siapa yang dipilih Sir Alex I don't mind.
kalo dua-duanya malah jadi kiper bagus (dan salah satunya jadi kiper timnas Inggris)
kan United malah punya lapisan kiper yang mumpuni *maruk mode on, ngarep boleh to?*
walopun kalo Foster masih terbayang2 match vs Malysia XI sih :P

Soccer: Nemanja Vidic will miss the start of the Barclays Premier League season, Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson said today.

Vidic has been ruled out of the Community Shield showpiece against Chelsea on Sunday at Wembley and the following game with Birmingham because of a calf injury.

Wes Brown is also sidelined this weekend with a thigh problem but is expected back for the opening league match while Gary Neville is unavailable because of a groin strain.

Ferguson said: “Neither Wes or Nemanja have long-term injuries. I would expect Wes to be fit for the game a week on Sunday.

“As for Vidic he pulled his calf in the warm-up in Munich (against Bayern Munich) and is two weeks away.

“Gary is doing a little bit of training and coming on fine but I do not think he will make Sunday.”

Cedera Brown & Vidic Tak Parah

Manchester - Sir Alex Ferguson mengatakan bahwa cedera Wes Brown dan Nemanja Vidic tak parah. Oleh karenanya, kedua bek andalan Manchester United itu tak akan absen untuk waktu yang lama.

Brown dibekap cedera paha pada saat memperkuat MU di ajang Audi Cup beberapa waktu silam. Sementara Vidic menderita cedera engkel. Cedera ini pula yang membuatnya absen dalam tur Asia lalu.

Vidic sempat dibawa MU untuk berlaga di Audi Cup, tetapi kemudian ia mendapatkan cedera pada otot betisnya dan kembali harus beristirahat.

Kehilangan Brown dan Vidic, terutama nama yang kedua, cukup menyunat kekuatan MU di lini pertahanan. Bersama Rio Ferdinand, Vidic sukses membangun tembok tebal di depan kiper MU.

Meski demikian, manajer MU Fergie berharap besar dua beknya itu telah pulih pekan depan sehingga dapat membela 'Setan Merah' di pekan pertama Liga Primer menghadapi Birmingham, 16 Agustus.

Bahkan manajer asal Skotlandia itu berharap Brown masih bisa tampil di ajang Community Shield melawan Chelsea akhir pekan ini. "Baik Wes atau Nemanja, keduanya tak memiliki cedera untuk waktu yang lama. Bahkan saya berharap Wes bisa fit untuk pertandingan di hari Minggu," ucapnya di AFP.

"Sementara Vidic, otot betisnya tertarik ketika melakukan pemanasan melawan Bayern Munich. Dia hanya perlu istirahat dua pekan," tandasnya.

London - Nani tampil impresif saat Manchester United ditundukkan Chelsea pada ajang Community Shield. Tapi Setan Merah kini malah terancam tak bisa memainkan sang gelandang di awal musim karena mengalami dislokasi bahu.

Nani menjadi salah satu bintang MU saat ditundukkan Chelsea lewat adu penalti di Community Shield yang berakhir beberapa jam lalu. Gelandang Portugal itu membuat gol indah dari luar kotak penalti, yang membuat The Red Devils sempat unggul 1-0 hingga babak pertama.

Setelah melewati adu penalti, "Setan Merah" akhirnya harus mengakui keunggulan The Blues, yang menang dengan 4-1. Malang buat Sir Alex Ferguson, kabar buruk lain, terkait kondisi Nani, datang tak lama setelah dia menyaksikan Chelsea menggelar pesta kemenangan.

Diberitakan Reuters, Nani mengalami cedera dislokasi bahu dalam laga tersebut. Ini artinya, dia terancam tak bisa memperkuat MU di pertandingan pertama Premier League yang akan bergulir tepat sepekan dari sekarang.

"Dia mengalami dislokasi bahu, dan yang mengerikan adalah bahwa kami tidak bisa mengembalikan kondisinya seperti semula dalam waktu singkat," ungkap Fergie pada wartawan usai pertandingan. "Dia dipastikan tak akan bermain untuk Portugal pekan ini," sambung pelatih asal Skotlandia itu.

Fergie tak menyebutkan berapa lama Nani bakal menghilang dari skuad MU. Mantan pemain Sporting itu terlihat mengerang kesakitan di menit 60 sebelum kemudian digantikan Antonio Valencia.

MU akan memulai upayanya mempertahankan titel Premier League dengan menghadapi tim promosi, Birmingham City.

Having been out of action since September 2008, it now looks likely that Owen Hargreaves will miss another six months of football due to tendonitis in his knees.

According to Neil Ashton in the News of the World: "Owen Hargreaves has secretly flown to Germany in a bid to save his Manchester United career. The England midfielder, 27, has been having treatment all week at the Munich clinic of top knee specialist Dr Hans Muller-Wolfahrt."

Ashton adds: "Hargreaves went to Munich after his latest setback and, although Sir Alex Ferguson said Hargreaves would return in 'two to three weeks', Muller-Wolfahrt told the player it could take six months. During the visit it emerged that his tendinitis has 'similarities' to the condition of tennis star Rafa Nadal. Both suffer from the knee complaint because they base their games on short bursts of speed from standing starts."

The 28-year-old central midfielder is now expected to return to America to see world-renowned specialist Dr Richard Steadman for further rehabilitation. Hargreaves will then seek out further advice from Dr Hans Muller-Wolfahrt, who he knows from his time at Bayern Munich.

Hargreaves played just three games for Manchester United last season, against Liverpool, Villareal and Chelsea during a period of eight days last September. During his first season at Old Trafford, in 2007/2008, Hargreaves played 23 games and scored two goals.

Man Utd suffer Nani injury blow

Manchester United winger Nani is set to miss the start of the new league season after dislocating his shoulder in the Community Shield defeat by Chelsea.

"He's out for a while, the worry is that we couldn't put it back in place," said United boss Sir Alex Ferguson after his side lost on penalties.

After scoring the game's opening goal, Nani had to come off just past the hour to be replaced by Antonio Valencia.

Nani dislocated his shoulder after he fell following a John Terry tackle.

The Portuguese winger is expected to take on greater responsibility in his team following the departure of Cristiano Ronaldo to Real Madrid.

He had an impressive game for United at Wembley, with his close ball control and speed troubling Chelsea in the first half.

Nani's goal came from a superb shot when he cut in from the left after 10 minutes.

But Chelsea recovered to take a 2-1 lead through goals from Ricardo Carvalho and Frank Lampard, before Wayne Rooney's injury equaliser sent the game to a shoot-out with Carlo Ancelotti's side triumphing 4-1.

Nani's injury will rule him of Portugal's friendly against Liechtenstein on 12 August.

He looks likely to miss next Sunday's Premier League opener against Birmingham City at Old Trafford, adding to United's problems.

Ben..Ben...gitu mo jadi kiper utama MU dan Inggris. Blom maen dah KO dulu...apes bener nih pemaen. pas di saat ada kesempatan maen eh malah cedera. Dah berapa kali Ben cedera di saat-saat penting buat unjuk gigi?
1. Saat pertama kali ditarik dari masa peminjaman yang sukses di watford dan melanjutkan tren positifnya di MU (lupa tahun berapa) eh malah cedera lama.
2. Akhir musim kemaren sebelum partai yang nggak menentukan lawan Hull dan saat SAF dipastikan nggak pake VDS eh Ben malah cedera.
3. Sekarang saat VDS cedera dan dapet kesempatan maen di timnas eh malah cedera lagi.

Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson says Rio Ferdinand could miss the rest of the month with a thigh injury.

The England international suffered a blow in training on Friday, forcing him to miss United's season-opener against Birmingham.

Ferguson has confirmed Ferdinand is having a scan on Monday that will assess the severity of the knock.

"Ferdinand pulled a muscle in training on Friday afternoon," he told Sky Sports.

"He's out. I don't know how long he's going to be out.

"We're sending him for a scan on Monday."

Jonny Evans also suffered an injury during the 1-0 victory over Birmingham at Old Trafford on Sunday.

And, following the match, Ferguson told Sky Sports that Ferdinand may not figure again until after the clash with Arsenal on 29th August.

"I would think he's out for the next two or three games actually, so it's a bit of a blow," he said.

"Jonny Evans has had to come off today.

"In the last year or so, we've been having problems with defenders, one after another.

"Fortunately we've got stand-ins like Wes Brown today. He's not done much training but his experience counts when you bring him into a situation like today.

Dia masih harus bergulat dengan cedera betis yang didapat dua hari sebelum pertandingan. Menurut keterangan manajer Alex Ferguson, sang kapten harus istirahat tiga pertandingan lagi.

United Indonesia - Seperti yang telah kita saksikan, Rio Ferdinand tidak terlihat pada pertandingan antara Manchester United dengan Birmingham City (16/08). Laporan yang ada menyebutkan, yang bersangkutan mengalami cedera paha saat sesi latihan. Dan harus absen sekitar 2 pekan.

Cederanya bek berusia 30 tahun ini memaksa Sir Alex Ferguson untuk memutar otak. Apalagi, di pertandingan tersebut, Jonny Evans juga turut memadati daftar cedera pemain belakang Manchester United, setelah terpaksa ditarik keluar lapangan pada babak kedua akibat ankle.

Kalo lihat kabr terakhir Vidic sudah mulai latihan ringan, mudah2an dia bisa tampil pas lawan wigan. Soalnya terlalu riskan kalo Center Back diisi Brown dan Oshea.

Oshea sering lambat menutup pergerakan lawan sedangkan Brown terlalu berani mengabil lawan yg sering berakibat fatal.

MANCHESTER, KOMPAS.com - Kemenangan Manchester United atas Birmingham City harus dibayar mahal. Bek sentral Jonny Evans cedera sehingga kini MU mengalami krisis di lini belakang.

Cedera pangkal paha yang didapat Evans pada laga tersebut menambah derita "Setan Merah" yang sudah ditinggalkan oleh Gary Neville, Nemanja Vidic, dan Rafael Da Silva. Dua hari sebelum duel lawan Birmingham, Rio Ferdinand sudah lebih dulu mundur karena cedera betis dan harus absen selama tiga pekan.

Tidak ada jaminan pemain-pemain bertahan itu bakal fit dan bisa bermain melawan tuan rumah Burnley di Turf Moor, Rabu (19/8). Sehingga, kuartet lini belakang "The Red Devils" hanya akan terdiri dari Fabio Da Silva, John O'Shea, Wes Brown, dan Patrice Evra, plus pemain 20 tahun asal Belgia, Ritchie de Laet, sebagai cadangan. Peluang De Laet untuk turun cukup besar karena cedera Brown sewaktu-waktu dapat kambuh.

"Kami menjalani masa sulit dengan cedera pemain bertahan selama dua tahun terakhir," kata pelatih Sir Alex Ferguson usai duel lawan Birmingham.

"Vidic sudah kembali berlatih dan itu kabar bagus. Dia bisa saja kembali pada laga lawan Wigan, Sabtu (22/8). Jonny Evans cedera lagi, sementara Gary Neville baru saja mulai berlatih, dan Rafael Da Silva masih absen karena bahunya meleset. Karena cedera itu, Ferguson Ferguson kemungkinan bakal menarik kembali bek Stoke City, Ryan Shawcross. Pemain 21 tahun ini merupakan jebolan akademi MU dan dijual ke Stoke dengan harga satu juta poundsterling pada Januari 2008.

Tosic seems to have a bit of a limp.

Tosic really looks sad. Now he is injured, only God knows how long he is going to be out.

It didn't look too serious, probably a week or two unless he got some ligament damage, they said it was just a twisted ankle.

Disappointed that Tosic came off injured, he was doing well.

SIR Alex Ferguson has ruled Rio Ferdinand out for another three to four weeks with a thigh injury.

Ferdinand suffered a slight tear in his thigh during training last week ahead of the Premier League opener against Birmingham.

Initially Ferguson felt that Ferdinand would only be sidelined for a couple of weeks. However, that estimate has now been revised.

"Rio is going to be out for three to four weeks," said Ferguson.

It means Ferdinand will miss the trip to Wigan, plus next Saturday’s eagerly anticipated encounter with Arsenal.

In addition, Ferdinand now seems certain to miss the next two England games, starting with a friendly against Slovenia on September 5, then a World Cup qualifier against Croatia four days later, when victory would book the Three Lions’ place in South Africa next summer.

It also raises concerns over Ferdinand’s general fitness given the £29.1million defender suffered a back injury and a calf problem last season that kept him sidelined for extended periods.

There is some good news on the injury front for United though as Ferdinand’s central defensive partner Nemanja Vidic is set to make his first start of the season at the DW stadium as United look to bounce back from Wednesday’s shock defeat at Burnley.

“Nemanja has trained with us for 10 days and he is ready for the game,” said Ferguson.

“Hopefully he will be okay by tomorrow.”

Jonny Evans has revealed he will probably need an operation to solve an ankle problem that has plagued him since Christmas.

It has not been decided when the young Manchester United defender will have surgery but Evans knows he cannot carry on playing with pain-killers forever.

"At some point my ankle will need surgery,'' said the 22-year-old.

"It is a problem that has been bothering me since Christmas.

"We thought it might have gone away over the summer but it is still there.

"Every now and again I catch it and it will be quite sore for a while. Then the pain dies off after a week or so.''

As a short-term measure, the anaesthetic seems to be working.

The Northern Ireland star was able to get through 34 games last season - including the Carling Cup final - and the first two this year when Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic have been out injured.

However, the return of Vidic after he suffered a calf injury prior to a pre-season game in Munich, plus the availability of Wes Brown, means the Belfast-born defender may not be required against Wigan at the DW Stadium tomorrow.

Ferdinand is out, though, with Evans acknowledging the 30-year-old's absence for another four weeks is a major blow.

"Rio is a good leader, a very good defender and a great player,'' he said.

"He is a big character who brings a lot to the team when he is playing.''

United will have to manage without him as they look to get their domestic campaign back on track after Wednesday's defeat at Burnley.

As someone who was part of the Northern Ireland side that humbled eventual winners Spain at Windsor Park during the last European Championship qualifiers, Evans knows what it is like to be on the other end of a major shock.

And it has led to a bit of introspection around the Red Devils' Carrington training complex as Ferguson's team look to put matters right.

"The players all look at themselves,'' said Evans.

"They are winners. They hate losing training games so it is no different in Premier League matches.

"They all know how the manager is feeling and how the fans are feeling. But it hurts the players too.''

Wigan suffered a setback themselves earlier this week when they went down to newly-promoted Wolves.

However, new manager Roberto Martinez announced his arrival last weekend with a splendid victory at Aston Villa, which included a wonder goal from Hugo Rodallega.

The Colombian is not exactly unknown to Evans.

He scored against United at the back end of last season, part of a performance so accomplished it prompted Evans to put him in his fantasy league team.

"Rodallega wasn't really known last year but a few people are looking at him a bit more now after his goal at the weekend,'' he said.

"In fact, a lot of people are taking an interest in Martinez for the work he did at Swansea and the way they played football.

"You don't really see that so much in the Championship but I am sure he will try to bring that same style to Wigan.''

Manchester - Penyembuhan Rio Ferdinand lebih cepat dari rencana. Bek internasional Inggris ini pun menargetkan sudah kembali memperkuat Mancheseter United saat menghadapi Tottenham Hotspur.

Ferdinand mengalami cedera pada pahanya saat melakukan latihan guna menghadapi Birmingham 17 Agustus lalu. Bek MU ini pun diprediksikan abvsen sekitar tiga atau empat minggu oleh pihak medis.

Cedera tersebut membuat Ferdinand absen memperkuat Inggris di laga kualifikasi Piala Dunia menghadapi Kroasia 9 September nanti. Namun dia menargetkan sudah pulih di saat menghadapi Tottenham 12 September nanti.

"Saya meunjukkan perkembangan. Saya pulih lebih cepat dari rencana. Saya Sudah melakukan latihan sangat keras dalam beberapa hari terakhir," ungkap Ferdinand seperti dilansir Sky Sport.

"Saya tidak berada dimana saya inginkan yang tentu saja berada di lapangan. Namun dalam beberapa pekan saya akan kembali lagi bermain di lapangan lagi," tegas bek internasional Inggris ini. ( key / a2s )

WES Brown could be pushing for a recall in Manchester United's key Premier League encounter with resurgent Arsenal at Old Trafford on Saturday.

Brown's pre-season preparations were hampered by a thigh injury and although the England international was introduced as a substitute in the opening-day win at Birmingham, he subsequently struggled during the shock defeat to Burnley at Turf Moor four days later.

The 29-year-old was left out completely by Sir Alex Ferguson for Saturday's win at Wigan but came through an hour of Monday night's reserve-team triumph over Bolton, which could put him in line for an appearance against Arsene Wenger's men.

Brown's availability could be crucial depending on the fitness of Jonny Evans.

The Northern Ireland international is defying the pain of an ankle injury to play at present, but was forced to come off at the DW Stadium, just as he did during the Community Shield earlier this month and the win over Birmingham.

United options

With Rio Ferdinand sidelined by a thigh problem he suffered in the build-up to the Birmingham game and not likely to return until the Manchester derby on September 20, Ferguson has limited options if Evans is ruled out at the weekend, when Brown's experience could be a valuable asset against a team that has scored 10 times in its two Premier League outings so far.

Plenty of interest will also surround Anderson, who is reported to have had a row with Sir Alex Ferguson earlier this month after being left out of the side that lost a Community Shield duel with Chelsea on penalties at Wembley.

Anderson has made just one appearance since, when he was stationed in a wide position to limited effect at Burnley.

The Brazilian's stock took a bit of a battering during the Champions League final defeat by Barcelona in Rome and it is said Ferguson is prepared to let the Brazilian midfielder leave if a suitable offer is received.

However, the Red Devils chief will not have forgotten how effective Anderson was in both legs of the semi-final win over Arsenal just four months ago, when his midfield presence alongside Darren Fletcher dominated the Gunners' engine room.

It could mean the combative 21-year-old gets the chance to revive his fortunes with the Reds in a match Ferguson will be keen to win and maintain the momentum generated at Wigan.

Jonny Evans is ready to undergo surgery on his troublesome ankle in a little more than fortnight.

Sportsmail revealed, the Manchester United defender has been playing through the pain barrier since picking up the knock last Christmas with Rio Ferdinand out for another three weeks and Nemanja Vidic possibly facing and FA rap for his flare-up with Wigan striker Hugo Rodallega last week.

But Evans is growing tired of taking pain-killers and is considering an operation on his return from international duty in early September.

That would rule him out of the Manchester derby on September 20 but Evans has revealed he needs to resolve the problem.

He told his Northern Ireland boss Nigel Worthington he is keen to play for his country in the up coming games against Poland and Slovakia before facing surgery.

Worthington said: 'Jonny Evans rang me last Thursday to say that there’s a possibility that he’ll need an operation, but he wants to try to battle through until after the internationals.

'He says he wants to play against Poland and Slovakia because he knows how crucial these two World Cup qualifiers are.
'Hopefully he’ll remain fit between now and the internationals and then go from there.'

Worthington insists he will put no pressure on Evans to play for his country if his ankle proves to be too sore.

He added: 'It's completely Jonny's call. I'm not going to get into a battle with Sir Alex.

'The health of the player must always come first and I'll respect Jonny's decision.’'

Manchester United new boy Gabriel Obertan has been ruled out for the next six weeks after manager Sir Alex Ferguson revealed the £3m summer recruit has been plagued by a back injury for over a year and a half.

The promising winger, 20, is yet to feature competitively in a United shirt since his arrival from French champions Bordeaux earlier this summer but the Old Trafford boss refuses to rush the highly-rated France Under-21 international into a swift return.

'He’s had a spine problem but I think he will be back in about a month to six weeks,' said Ferguson.

'He has been playing with this back injury for a year and a half and no-one thought about getting a scan.'

'We are taking our time with him because we want him back and 100 percent.'

Obertan has been earmarked as one for the future in France and Ferguson agreed that he expects big things from the fleet-footed player.

'He is very quick, can play wide both sides and through the middle so he brings a real versatility to us,' Ferguson added.

'At 16 he was one of the outstanding talents in Europe.

'We expect big things from him.'

The England star was injured on the eve of the Premier League season when he damaged a thigh in training.

He was expected to be out for a month, but he is now well ahead of schedule and Ferguson has confirmed that he is in contention to play this weekend.

"Rio has been in training this week and has a got a chance for Saturday," United boss Ferguson said.

"I'm not sure how big a chance but he has got a chance.

"I don't know if there is any injuries with the players coming back from games but I think the England players are all right."

Ferguson has lost John O'Shea with a calf injury, but Gary Neville, Fabio da Silva and Wes Brown are also fit again and Ferguson is pleased with his options in the back four.

"We're better off than we have been for months, in terms of defensive options," he said.

Owen Hargreaves has been earmarked to return to action for Manchester United in the Champions League clash with CSKA Moscow on Nov 4 following career-saving double knee surgery since his last appearance almost 12 months ago.

The 28-year-old midfielder, whose return to fitness is being closely monitored by England manager Fabio Capello, is due to return to Old Trafford on Sept 23 after spending recent months undergoing rehabilitation at the clinic of renowned knee surgeon Richard Steadman in Vail, Colorado.

Hargreaves has yet to progress to football training and sources close to player believe that a definitive schedule for his competitive comeback cannot be finalised until he tested his recovery on the training pitch.

United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has chosen to select the former Bayern Munich player in his Champions League squad, however, after studying medical assessments of Hargreaves' fitness.

And Ferguson admits that he is hopeful of seeing Hargreaves back in action, for the first time since his outing at Chelsea on Sept 21 last year, from early November.

Ferguson said: "With the Champions League squad, we wondered what we should do about Owen Hargreaves and whether we should put him or Zoran Tosic in the 25-man squad.

"It was a dilemma, but we came down on the side of Hargreaves because, having taken the medical advice, we think he will be available for the last three Champions League games.

"That will be the time when we want to push him back into action. He is such a versatile player, a man who can play in so many positions, that he could be a very important player for us at that time of the season. That's the reason he is in."

United face perhaps their sternest test of the season so far on Saturday when they face unbeaten Tottenham at White Hart Lane.

Harry Redknapp's team have a 100 per cent record so far this term and Ferguson believes that Spurs are showing signs of being able to challenge for a top four finish.

He said: "I think they can. Getting a good start is always important for a team that is rising and they have had a fantastic start to the season.

"Harry has brought in a few of his own types of players â€“ players he is familiar with â€“ like Peter Crouch, Jermain Defoe and now Niko Kranjcar â€“ and he got Wilson Palacios from Wigan in January which I thought was a good signing for him â€“ to bring that steel into midfield.

"They have started well and there is a good degree of experience, so Harry has a realistic chance of breaking into the top four this season.

"It's difficult to say at this stage whether they will be the strongest challengers to the top four but Spurs20and Man City are probably ahead of the rest at the moment."

Kenapa Rio sekarang jadi rentan cedera ya? berat klo seperti ini terus selama semusim. MU mungkin mesti segera cari bek lagi nih... kelihatannya berat klo mengharapkan Rio bakalan fit terus selama semusim sedangkan Evans juga nyaris sama rentannya. yang tersisa cuman Wes Brown yang kadang blunder.

Manchester - Kemenangan Manchester United atas VfL Wolfsburg diwarnai cederanya Michael Owen. Striker MU ini diperkirakan harus absen selama tiga pekan karena cedera pangkal paha.

Owen sebelumnya sempat mengalami cedera pangka paha pada pekan lalu. Namun dia telah menyatakan bahwa dia sudah fit untuk menghadapi Wolfsburg di Old Trafford, Kamis (1/10/2009)dinihari WIB.

Cedera tersebut ternyata kambuh lagi dan Owen sudah harus ditarik keluar karena keluhannya tersebut saat baru bermain 20 menit. Manajer Alex Ferguson pun memprediksikan Owen harus absen paling lama tiga pekan.

"Cedera pangkal paha adalah pangkal paha. Dia atas permukaan basah dia kembali dengan cepat dan dapat hilang lagi. Sebab itu kami mesti menariknya," ungkap Ferguson usai pertandingan yang dimenangi MU 2-1.

Wah... Owen cedera lagi. Moga ini bukan awal dari rentetan cedera berikutnya. Dah tau Owen rentan cedera tapi kenapa SAF masih aja maksain dia maen ya. walau tim medis MU bilang Owen fit tapi track record cedera-nya Owen kan sangat panjang.

Tapi kita lihat aja sisi baiknya... Welbeck dan Macheda dapet kesempatan emas untuk unjuk gigi, atau minimal duduk di bangku cadangan.

Hmmm... sepertinya sih jika seandainya Owen dimainkan saat melawan Liverpool kemungkinan besar sih pakai rumus seperti biasa, yakni masuk menit ke 70 atau 80an untuk menggantikan Berbatov sehingga resiko cederanya juga makin kecil kecuali jika pemain lawan memang "beringas" dan mengincar Owen, hiiii....

Sir Alex Ferguson expects Michael Owen to be available for Manchester United's first game after the international break.

Owen aggravated a groin injury during the early stages of United's 2-1 victory over Wolfsburg in the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday night.

The striker had initially picked up the problem in training on Sunday, but was passed fit to start his third game of the season for United.

There were suggestions that Owen would be sidelined for at least three weeks, but Ferguson believes the 29-year-old will be fit to face Bolton Wanderers on 17th October.

"We expect him to be available for the next game, it certainly won't be three weeks," said the United boss ahead of Saturday's date with Sunderland.

"We are quite pleased. Obviously it is understandable we wanted to take precautions given his past history, but we are quite comfortable with the situation.

"He did miss training earlier this week, so maybe we should have left him out. But he wanted to play and I wanted him to play. Thankfully it is not a big problem for us."

Ferguson also revealed that Edwin van der Sar and Rafael Da Silva were both nudging towards full fitness after a broken finger and shoulder surgery respectively, although neither man is in contention to face Sunderland.

That would have left the former Liverpool striker facing a battle to be match-fit for the powderkeg trip to Anfield on Oct 25.

But United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has boosted Owen's prospects of playing in front of The Kop by revealing that he could now be fit in time to face Bolton at Old Trafford on Oct 17.

Ferguson said: "Michael's injury is not as bad we first thought. We just attached a bit of precaution to it (on Wednesda).

"He should be available for our next game after Sunderland on Saturday.

"I don't think it's a three-week job or anything like that, so we expect him to be available for the Bolton game.

"We are pleased with that. The precaution was understandably given Michael's history with the problem, but we are quite comfortable with it.

"When he missed the training session (on Tuesday), maybe we should have just left him out against Wolfsburg.

"But he wanted to play and I wanted to play him, so he did, but it's not a great issue or a big problem for us. I think he'll be ok."

United face Sunderland at Old Trafford tomorrow (Sat) having won all but one of their competitive games this season.

And Ferguson admits United will only get stronger in the coming weeks with a raft of players due to return to fitness.

He said: "Edwin van der Sar isn't far away and he is training well now.

"Young Rafael da Silva is training well too, so touch wood, we have a strong squad available now.

"Picking the right team is a problem you get with everyone fit.

"It's going to be a real headache for me, but it's a good one to have.

"The form of the team is good at the moment, so my only concern is picking the right team."

Manchester United have today confirmed that goalkeeper Ben Foster was left out of Fabio Capello's England squad due to a chest injury.

Many observers guessed that the United keeper was left out because of his poor recent form, but the Red Devils have revealed that that is not the case, according to Sky Sports.

The 26-year-old sustained the injury during United's 2-2 draw with Sunderland at Old Trafford on Saturday.

As it transpires, Owen's quick thinking meant he only had a short recovery time and, after missing match with the Black Cats, is now virtually good to go.

Owen admits in the past he might have stayed on and then endured a spell on the sidelines, but is relieved he was able to spot the danger signs.

"I'm back in full training from tomorrow," Owen told At The Races on Monday. "The older you get the more you get to learn your body.

"Probably a few years ago I would have carried on playing and pulled something and been out for a couple of months or a few weeks at least.

"I felt something coming. If I'd continued or done another sprint then I think I would have pulled my groin.

"So I came off just before it happened and instead of three or four weeks it's three or four days. So that's something you get with experience."

Meanwhile, Owen, who has 89 caps and 40 goals for England, has not given up hope of making Fabio Capello's 23-man squad for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

The Three Lions have already qualified for the finals and, while Owen remains down the pecking order, his spirit are in tact.

"We'll see about that," he replied when asked about featuring in next summer's finals.

"Every aim for an English footballer is to go to the World Cup and get in that squad.

"I've got six or seven months to do as well as possible for Manchester United and hopefully (Fabio Capello) will be watching."
