Menggapai Mimpi di Old "Teater Impian" Trafford

Namun setelah dibuka kembali pada tahun 1949, Old Trafford terus menyusui masa-masa kejayaannya. Menelan biaya 30 juta pound, Old Trafford terus meningkatkan kapasitasnya menjadi 68.000 kursi, plus sejumlah suites untuk menghargai jasa para pahlawannya.
Tahun 2005, manajemen Setan Merah kembali merogok kocek, tak tanggung-tanggung, 45 juta pound.
Mereka adalah aparel asal AS: Nike, pabrikan otomotif asal Jerman: Audi, perusahaan asuransi asal AS: AIG, produsen bir Budweiser, Tourism Malaysia, Betfred, Century Radio, agen tiket Viagogo, dan perusahaan properti Royal Resort.
"We will win!" ujarnya singkat. Benar saja, Cristiano Ronaldo tampil memikat dan United menekuk Blackburn 4-1.

OLD TRAFFORD
Old Trafford, Manchester is one of the most impressive football stadia worldwide
and is home to Manchester United. There’s been a long arduous history over
Old Trafford and here, we are going to look at the beginning of a new stadium,
the destruction which followed, the rebuild and of course what stands proud
today on Sir Matt Busby Way…
The Beginning
As Newton Heath, United played at both North Road and Bank Street but as
developments took place around the club, so did a stadium change. The name
was changed to what we all know them by today, Manchester United and a plot
of land was bought for what at the time was a very expensive £60,000, and it
was here that the home of the club would be constructed. In 1909, the build was
complete and the end product was a stadium, terraced on 3 sides with a main
stand, seated and under cover, which was the South stand and still to this day,
remains the main stand. Designed by Archibald Leitch, a man also responsible for
works at Ibrox, Hampden Park and White Hart Lane, had put forward plans for
the stadium to be capable of holding a capacity of 100,000 although due to
expenses the capacity had to be cut back to 60,000 which could stretch to 80,000
if need be. It was in this stadium where the highest ever recorded attendance
atOld Trafford was taken and it came in a meeting between Wolverhampton
Wanderers and Grimsby Town in an FA Cup semi-final, meaning that Manchester
United don’t officially hold the highest attendance for within their own
homeground. Wolves and Grimsby attracted a total of 76,962 spectators in March
1939 while the biggest number recorded at a United game is just short at 76,098
against Blackburn Rovers in March 2007. 1934 saw the replacement of the roofing
over the South stand along with the adding of cover to the two South corners
and partial covering of the North stand. The stadium was progressing well and
more key developments were on the horizon but unfortunately…
http://lh3.ggpht.com/_XA_htQvbbH4/SH...Q/IMG_3040.jpg
Old, terraced Stretford End
The Destruction
…in March 1941, the stadium which had so much time and effort put into, was
ruined during the Second World War as German planes, who were dropping
bombs on Manchester, intending to hit the dock lands close to Old Trafford but
ended up hitting a special part of Manchester. The stadium was in complete
ruins almost most notably the main South stand which took the brunt of the
damage. The tunnel however stood tall and proud which amazed everybody
involved. United were given money to clear up the mess and rebuild the
stadium but because the area was under construction, it meant that
Manchester United wouldn’t be able to play a game in their real home for alomst
10 years. During this time, the club was relocated to cross-town rivals Manchester
City at Maine Road. As work went on at Old Trafford, they constructed the
stadium almost to the exact details of the previous stadium.
The Rebuild
Shortly after, in the 1950’s, roofing was added to Stretford End, and in the ‘60’s
modern cantilever roofing was added to the North stand and the East stand. This
was a huge development in the construction history of Manchester United and
was the fuel need to propel further developments to the home of Manchester
United. At the time, plans were afoot to have every stand in Old Trafford set to
cantilever style roofing, as roof-posts which were constructed to keep the roof
standing obstructed fans views of the game. Some grounds nowadays still have
this style of roofing, some due to financial limitations or planning permission whilst
others prefer the old style English look. United were in full support of the new
idea by then club owners, the Edwards. Before this took place, the Stretford End
was a half seated, half terraced stand but due to the Hillsborough disaster, it was
stated the top clubs in England had to have all-seated stadiums. This wasn’t of
much concern to the United backroom as they already had plans to do away with
it but at the time, fans were disappointed by the news as the Stretford End, the
most famous United stand would cease to allow standing. The Stretford once had
its noise recorded to that louder then a jumbo jet taking off. The last ever game
to be played in front of the team was a match against Tottenham Hotspur in
which United emerged victorious on a 3-1 score line. The terrace was demolished.
The Stretford End was the final stand in Old Trafford to have its makeover of
cantilever roofing and in 1994, Old Trafford became the first ever stadium to have
a stadium with all stands erected to cantilever styling. However, due to the
removal of standing in the Stretford End, United suffered a huge decrease in
crowd attendances as the capacity fell from around 58,000, to 44,000, and this
size was simply not big enough to cater for the thousands of loyal supporters.
United were to break another record when they announced that they would be
renovating the already biggest North Stand into a mega, 3 tiered stand holding
up to 28,000 spectators to view the team in red and this was to be the biggest
style of stand in Europe and still is today. It has proved to be £19M well spent on
the United side. The stand is now a feature of English football and also houses
the stadiums historic museum where one can learn about the United history
which has built up since the beginning of the club.
The Present Day Old Trafford
After going through so many ordeals a magnificent stadium stands tall on Sir Matt
Busby Way. The main stand, the South stand, is the smallest stand in the
stadium all due to the fact that a rail line runs directly behind it and housing just
behind that. Astronomical figures were reported recently on the figure United
would have to dish out in order to build over the rail line and build on the land
behind that. The current stand holds the TV cameras and the official Manchester
United TV station, MUTV studios. The old tunnel is also located here in between
the two managerial areas but since 1993, the club now use a tunnel in the corner
of the South and West stands and the teams emerge from here. The old tunnel,
recently renamed the Munich tunnel remains and is a stopping point on the official
club tour. The stand is also the lowest in the stadium, set at a smaller angle
meaning it stretches further back. An interesting fact of Old Trafford is that all the
way around the ground, the seats in the first four rows are in fact below the
street level around the stadium.
In further developments, the club decided that even further expansion was in
need to keep up with the growing demand on one of the worlds biggest football
teams. What this entailed was that an extra tier was to be added to the East
stand also known as the well known K-Stand where hard-core United fans
congregate although some have moved to the opposite Stretford End which was
the other stand which was in line for a makeover with a second tier. The East
stand had its second tier opened for operation in January of 2000 which boosted
the stadium capacity to just over 61,000. The East stand is a very iconic stand at
Old Trafford and it is here where the clubs Megastore where unimaginable
turnover is made every single day as people of all ages from all over the world
purchase goods from the latest jersey to bottle openers, is based. You can also
access the club reception at the front of the stand. Standing proud and standing
tall over the Megastore is the man who made Manchester United what they are
and is the man who is responsible for the Busby Babes and the nickname of the
Red Devils and it is of course, that statue of Sir Matt 'Mattha' Busby.

Across the forecourt also stands a trio of United greats, unveiled in 2007, which
shows Best, Law and Charlton facing Sir Matt standing over them. The Munich
clock which shows the time and date of the Munich Air Disaster along with the
Munich Plaque which shows the names of those who passed away due to events
in Munich. The new Millennium saw the introduction of a second tier added to the
Stretford End which is now the place where many United fans look for tickets as it
is here that the hard core fans who sing rain or shine are based. United are
renowned for shooting towards the “Stretty” and 9 times out of 10, you will
notice that they play towards the end in the second half of games. At the front of
the second tier, banners are hung by supporters group, stretfordend.co.uk. The
banners range from taunting nearest rivals, Manchester City with the well-
known “counter” which shows the amount of years that City have gone without
marking a major trophy with their name, to celebrating players that have won
over the hearts of United fans, with one such example the 20Legend
banner acknowledging Ole Gunnar Solskjaers time at Manchester United.

Munich Plaque
Old Trafford played host to FA Cup semi-finals as Wembley was undergoing a
facelift along with hosting the 2003 Champions League final between Italian
giants, AC Milan and Juventus. (AC Milan won on penalties) The stadium is
the only stadia in England that has been given the UEFA 5 star rating, making it a
historic venue for England. England’s national team themselves played their home
games at the ground as Wembley was closed.
2005 saw the construction of the two quadrants in the North East/West corners
enlarging the capacity to a whopping 76,000+, and this is how Old Trafford
currently stands today for all to see.
What The Future May Hold
Many people are angling to see Old Trafford complete by adding two more
quadrants in the two remaining corners along with seeing the South stand
matched to the opposite North stand. This however would be the most expensive
expansion should the club decide to go through with it as to carry out the work,
the railway line would have to be built over and a large plot of land, currently
containing houses, be uprooted for the stand. If such a build was to go through,
the stadium would dwarf the country’s national stadium with a mega 96,000
capacity. Many believe that the club want to do this and have been considering it
for a while now, although up until now, the club have made no announcements.
Hopefully we’ll be looking at a 96,000 all-seater stadium in a few years to come.

Old Trafford, Taman Impian "Setan Merah"
KompasBola.com - 26/7/2009 | 01:46 WIB
http://www.kompas.com/data/photo/2009/07/26/0145482p.jpg
Sejak itu, Old Trafford bagaikan tempat peribadatan penting sepak bola Inggris. Meski kemudian muncul stadion-stadion bagus, termasuk Wembley, namun nilai historis dan gengsi Old Trafford tak pernah sirna.
Bagi Manchester United, Old Trafford bagaikan taman impian.
Butuh waktu nyaris 9 tahun untuk kembali menghidupkan kembali Old Trafford. Praktis, dalam delapan musim Liga Utama Inggris absen ddi Old Trafford.
Kapasitas stadion pun naik turun. Setelah kasus tragedi di Stadion Hillsborough, 1989, kapastias dikurangi menjadi 45.000, bahkan kemudian 43.000. Kapasitas tersedikit sepanjang sejarah Old Trafford.
Maka, penambahan kapasitas pun terus dilakukan.
Bahkan, Manchester United punya rencana besar.
(HPR)

To celebrate Old Trafford's impending 100th birthday, ManUtd.com runs through the 100 greatest moments in the stadium's history. First up, naturally, is the first game to be staged in M16...
The background: United chairman John Henry Davies stumped up £60,000 of his own money for the construction of a new stadium in 1909, enlisting Scottish architect Archibald Leitch, the mastermind behind Hampden Park, to design it. After months of construction by Messrs Brameld and Smith of Manchester, United swapped Bank Street for Old Trafford and the new ground was ready to host its first game: United vs Liverpool.
The occasion: On a pitch "as spick and span, as smooth, and as green as a billiard table," according to The Manchester Guardian, United roared into a 3-0 lead through Sandy Turnbull's diving header and further strikes from Tom Homer and George Wall. However, the visitors hit back with braces from Arthur Goddard and James Stewart to eventually edge a thrilling game.
The aftermath: Defeat to Liverpool, who finished second behind Aston Villa, was United's only setback at Old Trafford during 1909/10. The Reds took maximum points from all seven remaining homes games and finished fifth in the First Division - a marked improvement on finishing 13th a year earlier.

The OT100 list continues with 1911's FA Cup Final replay between Bradford City and Newcastle United - the first time the final of England's leading cup competition came to M16...
The Background: In the days before the construction of Wembley, the FA held its showpiece final at Crystal Palace. Reigning cup holders Newcastle took on Bradford in London, but could only muster a goalless draw. Four days later, the sides reconvened at Old Trafford, where a crowd of 58,000 were shoehorned in for an evening of much graft, but little guile.
The Occasion: Bradford captain Jimmy Speirs headed the only goal of the game after 15 minutes - while thousands of fans were still queuing outside - to seal City's one and only major honour. Fittingly, the brand new trophy he clutched at full-time had been crafted in Bradford by renowned jeweller Messrs Fattorini and Sons.
The Aftermath: The FA were so impressed by the smooth nature of Old Trafford's staging, that United were approached to host another final four years later.

The background: Four years after hosting the FA Cup Final replay, OT was chosen as the venue for the Final itself. The matchday programme, produced by United, trumpeted: "The home of Manchester United (is) a splendidly equipped and commodious enclosure." A huge proportion of the near-50,000 attendance was made up by the armed forces, leading for the game to be subsequently dubbed 'The Khaki Cup Final'.
The occasion: Sheffield United were the overwhelming pre-match favourites, and dominated proceedings before taking the lead through James Simmons on the stroke of half-time. Late goals from Stanley Fazackerley and Joseph Kitchen sealed a deserved victory for the Blades - their third victory in the competition.
The aftermath: Upon presenting the trophy, the Earl of Derby urged all supporters present that they needed to join together and play "a sterner game for England," in reference to the ongoing First World War. Shortly after the 1915 final, the FA Cup and Football League were both suspended until 1919, after the war had finished.

Ryan Giggs may have fall into the bracket of a veteran Welsh winger, but Giggsy looks just a young pup when compared to one of his forebears; the charismatic Billy Meredith...
The Background: Billy Meredith was one of football's first showmen. A former pit pony driver, the toothpick-chewing, tobacco-spitting Welshman joined Manchester City in 1892 and had a distinguished decade with the Blues. He left disgraced and banned for 18 months, however, amid allegations of bribing Aston Villa's Alex Leake to throw a game, and crossed to Old Trafford in May 1906. Meredith, a tricky, two-footed outside forward, quickly won the favouritism of the United support. His showmanship continued, with an especially eye-catching knack of lobbing penalties. He went on to make 335 appearances for the Reds in a legendary career which finally ended in May 1921.
The Occasion: With United marooned in mid-table, a paltry crowd of just 10,000 made it to M16 to see the Reds take on Derby County, unaware that it would be Meredith's final appearance. United did thanks to goals from Joe Spence (2) and George Sapsford, but Meredith, even playing with his customary toothpick in his mouth, but couldn't find a goal to round off the occasion.
The Aftermath: Even at 46, Meredith's career wasn't finished. He returned to City for another three seasons, and retired just shy of his 50th birthday, after the Blues' FA Cup semi-final defeat to Newcastle United.

OT100 #5: Pape switches sides
http://picsrv.manutd.com/?fif=/manu/img_10_31856_2522.jpg&obj=iip,1.0&wid=500
One of the most bizarre transfer tales in United's history came in 1925, when Albert Pape arrived at Old Trafford as an opposition player, but lined up for the Reds...
The Background: The sale of Bill Henderson left United short on strikers ahead of the visit of Clapton Orient (latterly Leyton Orient). Before the visitors left London for Manchester, the two clubs agreed that Orient striker Albert Pape could sign for United. The Football Association quickly ratified the deal as Pape travelled north with his soon-to-be-former team-mates.
The Occasion: Even though Pape had been named in the visitors' starting line-up, he donned the United strip. Not only did the Reds win, but Pape had the last laugh against his former club by getting on the scoresheet in a 4-2 triumph.
The Aftermath: Pape's United career spanned a mere 18 games and yielded five goals. Having played his part in the Reds' promotion from Division Two, he made only three appearances in Division One and was sold to Fulham. The two sides met just five months later in the FA Cup. Again, Pape haunted his former employers with a goal, but United won through 2-1.
Name: Albert Pape
Born: 13 June 1897, Elsecar
Died: 18 November 1955, Doncaster
Position: Centre forward
Debut: v Clapton Orient (H), 7 February 1925

Well established as one of England's premier football venues after 16 years as United's home, Old Trafford was chosen to host its first international...
The Background: The Football Association had been suitably impressed by the smooth running of the 1911 FA Cup Final replay and the 1915 Final proper in M16. Thus, when Wembley drew a poor crowd for the 1924 British Home Championship clash between England and Scotland, Old Trafford was quickly enlisted as an alternative international venue when the teams met at the 1926 Championship.
The Occasion: England were struggling with a point from two games, while Scotland were already assured of the title after hammering Wales (3-0) and Ireland (4-0) in their opening two games. The typically fiery encounter went with form, as Alec Jackson's early strike gave the Scots a comfortable victory and banished England to bottom spot of the four-team table, a place the Three Lions occupied only thrice in 89 tournaments.
The Aftermath: While OT has hosted a string of England international fixtures since - most notably during the redevelopment of Wembley in the earlier part of this millennium - this remains the only time the Auld Enemy have done battle in M16.

Going into the final day of the 1927/28 season, only goal difference separated the Reds from the foot of the table...
The Background: After a poor season's work, United were in dire straits going into the final three games of the campaign. Narrow wins over Sunderland and Arsenal provided a platform for survival, but the Reds hosted Liverpool on the final day of the season firmly entrenched in trouble. Joint-bottom with Burnley, the Reds needed victory and help from elsewhere.
The Occasion: Step forward Joe Spence. The Reds' leading scorer plundered a hat-trick to take his season's total to 24 goals, while further strikes from Bill Rawlings (2) and Jimmy Hanson ensured United's record victory over Liverpool came with priceless timing.
The Aftermath: Tottenham had already finished their season with 38 points, and were overhauled by both United and Burnley. The same fate befell Middlesbrough, 3-0 last-day losers at home to Sunderland, thus the Reds escaped relegation by a solitary point. Demotion was only staved off temporarily, however, as United finished bottom in 1930/31 and spent several years yo-yoing between the top two divisions thereafter.

Curiously, Old Trafford's record attendance didn't even come in a United game. 76,962 supporters crammed into the stadium to see Grimsby take on Wolves in the 1939 FA Cup semi-final...
The Background: Just because United had exited the FA Cup in a third round replay - drubbed 5-1 at home by West Brom - didn't mean Old Trafford had seen its last knockout action of the season. Grimsby and Wolves met in M16 for the right to face the winner of Portsmouth and Huddersfield.
The Occasion: Already weakened by the absence of first-choice goalkeeper George Tweedy, Grimsby's plight worsened when his replacement, George Moulson, was injured early on. In the days before substitutes, the Mariners soldiered on with 10 men. Predictably, they were crushed. Wolves striker Dennis Westcott bagged four goals - en route to a season haul of 43 in as many games - while Tom Galley added a fifth.
The Aftermath: High-flying Wolves were crushed 4-1 by struggling Portsmouth in the final, with salt rubbed into the midlanders' wounds as Pompey held onto the trophy throughout World War II. OT's attendance record, meanwhile, cannot be beaten unless the capacity is further extended; it currently stands at 75,797.

Old Trafford, devastated during World War II, was rebuilt over the course of nearly a decade. And at the start of the 1949/50 season, the Reds were back home...
The Background: Old Trafford was twice struck by German Luftwaffe bombs; causing minor damage in December 1940 and then destroying much of the South Stand in March 1941. Manchester City offered to host United’s home games at Maine Road – at a variable cost including a percentage of the gate - while rebuilding work was undertaken. Almost a decade later, an uncovered OT was ready to host matches at the start of the 1949/50 season.
The Occasion: 41,748 spectators crammed into the stadium to see United take on Bolton Wanderers on a balmy August evening. Charlie Mitten, Jack 'Gunner' Rowley and an own-goal gave the Reds a resounding 3-0 victory, and hailed a triumphant return to home soil.
The Aftermath: Prior to the bombing, Old Trafford had undergone extensive - and expensive - roofing work to shelter the North Stand, in addition to the already-covered South Stand. After the almighty setback, and armed with some £22,000 from the War Damages Commission, the club eventually restored the original roofing and also covered the Scoreboard End and Stretford End.

In April 1952, United needed only to avoid a hammering against Arsenal to end four decades of waiting for the league title...
The Background: United were virtually assured of a first league title for 41 years, but there was still the faintest glimmer of hope for second-placed Arsenal when they arrived at Old Trafford for the final game of the 1951/52 season. The Gunners needed to win by seven goals to pip the Reds on goal difference and wrest the title from Matt Busby's side in heartbreaking fashion.
The Occasion: A seven-goal swing was nearly achieved, but not by the visitors. Instead United obliterated Arsenal to end the title drought and claim the first championship of Busby's reign in the most emphatic style. Jack 'Gunner' Rowley bagged a hat-trick to take his season's tally to 30, while Stan Pearson helped himself to two and Roger Byrne popped up with his seventh goal of the campaign to seal a thumping 6-1 victory.
The Aftermath: Having brought the league crown back to Old Trafford, Busby set about revamping his team with an influx of young talent. Finishes of eighth, fourth and fifth followed in the next three seasons, before Busby's 'Babes' stormed to the 1955/56 title at what appeared to be the dawn of a glorious new era.

In 1953, United entered the inaugural FA Youth Cup. Finally, the club's fabled youth system had a platform, and Wolves were torn apart in the final at Old Trafford...
The Background: The Football Association introduced the FA Youth Challenge Cup in 1952, opening the competition to amateur and professional clubs affiliated with the FA. United stormed through to the final, en route posting a merciless 23-0 annihilation against Nantwich at The Cliff. A highly-rated young Wolves side awaited in a two-legged final, the first of which took place at Old Trafford in May 1953.
The Occasion: The visitors were brushed aside by a United team featuring future first-teamers Duncan Edwards, Billy Whelan, David Pegg, Eddie Coleman and Albert Scanlon. Watched by 20,934 supporters, Jimmy Murphy led The Reds to a 7-1 victory in which Noel McFarland (2), Eddie Lewis (2), Pegg, Scanlon and Whelan all found the net.
The Aftermath: The second leg ended 2-2, giving United a 9-3 aggregate cakewalk. Soon afterwards, more silverware was swept as the young Reds snared the Blue Stars tournament in Switzerland, and the conveyor belt of talent showed no signs of slowing. As Edwards et al stepped up to the first team, so others took their place in the youth team, and United won the next four FA Youth Cups.
"I looked at the youngsters who were thrashing Wolves on that May evening, and I thought how wonderful it would be to play alongside such tremendous footballers. From that moment, joining United became irresistible."

Matt Busby's faith in young players was validated spectacularly during the 1955/56 season, never more spectacularly than against West Brom at Old Trafford...
The Background: “If you don’t put them in, you can’t know what you’ve got,” was Matt Busby’s blunt riposte to journalists’ suggestions that he was wrong to populate his United side with untried youngsters. The average age of the players Busby used across the entire season was just 22, and the side chosen to face West Brom in the third game of the campaign - after draws against Birmingham and Tottenham - was the Scot’s freshest-faced line-up, and United’s youngest ever starting XI.
The Occasion: United's young guns swarmed over the Baggies, and won 3-1 to register a first victory of the campaign. Eddie Lewis, Albert Scanlon and Dennis Viollet bagged the goals, but the speed and swagger with which United cut the visitors to ribbons captured the imagination of the home support.
The Aftermath: The eye-catching victory set the tone for glorious First Division title triumphs in both the 1955/56 and 1956/57 seasons. Naysaying outsiders – unwitting forebears to 1995’s Alan Hansen – were proven wrong, while Busby could bask in a glorious validation of his beliefs.

In April 1956, the Busby Babes were one win away from ruling England...
The Background: With three games remaining in the league season, second-placed Blackpool visited Old Trafford in search of a victory to prolong the title race and haul in Matt Busby's rampant young side. For United, victory would bring a second title in five season, and the Babes' first.
The Occasion: The pumped-up visitors took a shock lead inside 90 seconds, catching United cold. The Reds had only dropped three points at home all season, however, and drew level through a Johnny Berry penalty. When Tommy Taylor bagged a late winner - his 25th of a prolific campaign - the champagne corks could start flying.
The Aftermath: United rounded off the season with a draw at Sunderland and a home win over Portsmouth, ending up 11 points clear of Blackpool. A year later, eight points was the gap as the Babes saw off challenges from Tottenham and Preston. A glorious era of dominance beckoned, only for the tragedy of Munich to strike.

The legendary United career of Sir Bobby Charlton began in fittingly impressive style, with a match-winning pair against Charlton Athletic...
The Background: Aged just 18, Bobby Charlton was told by Matt Busby that he would be making his senior debut against Charlton Athletic at Old Trafford. After a sleepless night, a pre-match meal of steak and eggs and a swig of sherry, the youngster - who was nursing an injured ankle - lined up to make his bow.
The Occasion: The visitors stunned OT by taking the lead inside a minute but, after Johnny Berry had quickly restored parity, Bobby took over. A quickfire brace - one a long-ranger, the other a volley, both with his injured foot - put United into a 3-1 lead. Although Charlton later missed a sitter and the chance of a hat-trick, he had won the game and set the wheels in motion for a United career which would go down in folklore.
The Aftermath: The rest is history. Charlton bagged 12 goals from 17 appearances across all competitions over the course of the 1956/57 season, and went on to enjoy a legendary United career. Although Ryan Giggs overtook Sir Bobby at the top of the Reds' all-time appearance-makers chart, the latter's 249 goals remains a club record to this day.
"I acknowledged some applause, but I was overwhelmed by my own thoughts - and especially one. 'You've played for Manchester United, you've done what you were there to do, you've scored goals - no-one can ever take that away.'"

With European nights ahead for United, Old Trafford joined the floodlit family in 1957...
The Background: As soon as the Busby Babes were given the go-ahead to launch England’s first assault on the European Cup in 1956/57, United’s board authorised the installation of a lighting system to allow Old Trafford to host late-night midweek games. After six months of construction, Old Trafford was ready to host its first floodlit match, a First Division game against Bolton on 25 March 1957.
The Occasion: The clamour to witness the game was uncontrollable. The official attendance reached 60,862 and newspapers estimated that 20,000 supporters were turned away, while cars were abandoned in a three-mile radius around the ground as supporters escaped static traffic to race for kick-off on foot. Caught up in the melee was the wife of chairman Harold Hardman, who had been scheduled to turn on the lights before kick-off. In her absence, Hardman himself had to oblige. Unfortunately for United, it was the Trotters who shone in the spotlight, winning through a strike from Ray Parry and a Bill Foulkes own-goal. The Reds rallied late on, but Bolton’s well-marshalled defence held firm.
The Aftermath: The News Chronicle’s Frank Taylor glumly wrote: “Manchester United’s new £40,000 floodlights lit up Old Trafford for the first time last night in a blaze of glory, but the glittering scene became a dim-out for United’s League title hopes.” Despite the setback, the Babes were soon burning brightly again; winning six and drawing two of eight remaining games to clinch a second successive league title.

Old Trafford staged its first European Cup tie on 25 April 1957...
The Background: Such was Matt Busby's haste to enter United into the European Cup, he did so while Old Trafford was still without floodlights and therefore incapable of hosting evening matches - hence the Maine Road ties against Anderlecht, Borussia Dortmund and Athletic Bilbao. But by the semi-finals, OT was ready to stage the Reds' second leg against the mighty Real Madrid. In the first leg, United had been devastated by Alfredo di Stefano and Francisco Gento as the Spaniards built a 3-1 lead at the Bernabeu.
The Occasion: Old Trafford bulged with 65,000 supporters, all eager to see the Reds defeat the white-clad conquistadors. For hours before kick-off, the ground rumbled with intent. “If noise could have served their purpose, United would have won hands down,” reported The Guardian. Unfortunately, wonderful team goals, finished off by Raymond Kopa and Enrique Mateos, had the tie all-but over after little more than half an hour. However, United bounced back after the break, roared on by the home support. “The crowd created a surge of desire to show Real that we could play at their level,” said Bobby Charlton, who followed up Tommy Taylor’s goal to make it 2-2 on the night in the 85th minute. The Reds continued to believe but ultimately tumbled out 5-3 on aggregate.
The Aftermath: A first taste of European football yielded mixed emotions - disappointment as a first-leg deficit proved insurmountable but excitement at entering a brave new world. In the following season, 1957/58, the visitors came from Ireland (Shamrock Rovers), Czechoslovakia (Dukla Prague), Italy (AC Milan) and fatefully Yugoslavia (Red Star Belgrade), from where some of Busby's players never arrived home after the second leg.

The Reds had dominated the FA Youth Cup since its inception; winning the first four competitions. With a talented young West Ham in the way, however, trophy number five looked far from nailed-on...
The Background: A 3-2 first leg win in East London secured by goals from Alex Dawson, Nobby Lawton and Reg Hunter, gave United a slight, but important advantage going into the second leg. A crowd of 23,349 flocked to Old Trafford to witness the potential coronation of Jimmy Murphy's latest batch of gifted youngsters.
The Occasion: Unchanged from the first leg, a rampant United side tore the Hammers apart, romping to a 5-0 victory on the night, and an 8-2 aggregate triumph. Striker Mark Pearson stole the show, bagging an eye-catching hat-trick, while Kenny Morgans and Hunter, with his second of the tie, added further gloss to the scoreline.
The Aftermath: Following the Munich air disaster, many of United's youngsters were drafted into senior duty, severely weakening the 1957/58 Youth Cup campaign. Nevertheless, the Reds reached the semi-finals before losing out to Wolves. The midlanders eventually won the competition, overcoming Chelsea 7-6 on aggregate after a 5-1 first-leg drubbing. United's sixth triumph in the competition eventually came in the 1963/64 campaign.

As the club came to terms with the full horror of the Munich air disaster, the bodies of the victims were flown back to Manchester...
The Background: With 21 dead after the failed take-off and subsequent explosion of the plane carrying United's players back from a European Cup tie against Red Star Belgrade, the club was rocked to its foundations. The victims had to return home, however, and the bodies made their final trip back to Manchester on Friday, 7 February 1958.
The Occasion: Old Trafford was a scene of shocked congregation. Fans flocked to try and make sense of the tragedy, while inside assistant club secretary Les Olive toiled manfully to make the club cope with the events. When the bodies of those who had perished arrived, they were carefully laid in the club's gym - underneath the south stand - where they stayed overnight on perhaps the eeriest evening Old Trafford has known.
The Aftermath: The following morning, families of the deceased filtered in to collect the bodies and make funeral arrangements. When the victims were laid to rest, United supporters lined the streets in silent tribute to each cortege. A two-minute silence was impeccably observed at every football match across the country that weekend. United did not play, naturally, but football did return to Old Trafford just 13 days after Munich, with an FA Cup tie against Sheffield Wednesday.

OT100 #19: United go on
http://picsrv.manutd.com/?fif=/manu/img_10_32062_1293.jpg&obj=iip,1.0&wid=120&hei=179&rgn=0.3353474320241692,0.008,0.3625377643504532,0. 716&cvt=jpeg
'United will go on..." opened chairman Harold Hardman's message on the cover of United Review, just 13 days after the hell of Munich. The Reds welcomed Sheffield Wednesday to Old Trafford in the FA Cup fifth round, on an unforgettable evening...
The Background: With many first teamers killed or injured in Munich, caretaker manager Jimmy Murphy had to cobble together a side from reserve or youth team players, and he also took advantage of the FA's decision to relax its rule on fielding cup-tied players. Goalkeeper Harry Gregg and right-back Bill Foulkes lined up as the only players who had been aboard the ill-fated aircraft, and they were joined by Ian Greaves, Freddie Goodwin, Ronnie Cope, Colin Webster, Alex Dawson, Mark Pearson and Shay Brennan from within the club's ranks.
The line-up was completed by Ernie Taylor, signed from Blackpool, and Stan Crowther, who started the day on Aston Villa's books, made the trip to Old Trafford with his manager Eric Houghton and was told to join United. Upon protesting that he didn't even have boots, Crowther was amazed when Houghton told him: "Don't worry, I've got your boots in my bag." He signed an hour before kick-off.
The Occasion: An attendance of 59,848 swelled Old Trafford on a freezing Wednesday evening. With many spectators openly weeping in a mass outpouring of grief for those conspicuous by their absence, a unique electricity filled the misty air. Galvanised by the atmosphere and the chance to play for the memory of their fallen colleagues, a virtually unrecognisable United team put in the most heroic shift; 11 giants pouring sweat for the cause.
Teenage right-back Brennan started on the left wing, and opened the scoring on 27 minutes when Wednesday goalkeeper Brian Ryalls totally misjudged the Irishman's inswinging corner, allowing the ball to sail in. After the break, Brennan fired home his second after Pearson's shot had been parried, and Alex Dawson scored five minutes from the end to seal progress after a monumental effort from 'Murphy's Marvels'.
Wednesday's Albert Quixall, who would later join United, recalled: "I don't think anyone who played in the game or watched it will ever forget that night. United ran their hearts out, and no matter how well we had played they would have beaten us. They were men inspired. We were playing more than just 11 players; we were playing 60,000 fans as well."
The Aftermath: United couldn't summon the consistency to mount a challenge for a third successive league title, but embarked on the most romantic of journeys through the rounds of the FA Cup. After Wednesday, West Brom were ousted after a replay. Second division Fulham were also overcome in the semi-final, again after a replay, but the final against Bolton at Wembley was a step too far.
Although almost all neutrals were rooting for the Reds, and manager Matt Busby was well enough to leave his Munich hospital bed and watch from the stands, the Trotters played the role of villains perfectly. A pair of Nat Lofthouse goals – the second rendered infamous for the manner in which he barged the ball and goalkeeper Gregg over the line – did the damage in a 2-0 win. United had run out of steam, but had still enraptured a nation.
"Although we mourn our dead and grieve for our wounded we believe that great days are not done for us. The road back may be long and hard but Manchester United will rise again."
- Excerpt from chairman Harold Hardman's United Review cover message

Old Trafford was the setting for an afternoon of grieving as Nottingham Forest's First Division visit was preceded by a memorial service for those who had perished in Munich...
The Background: The time had come to officially pay collective respect to those who had perished in Munich, but the day before the club and its supporters geared up to say their farewells, the death toll rose from 22 to 23. Duncan Edwards' incredible powers of survival waned in the early hours of Friday, 21 February, lending a fresh air of loss to proceedings when Forest arrived in M16.
The Occasion: As Edwards' body was being flown from Munich to London, the Dean of Manchester led a short, interdenominational service at Old Trafford for each victim. Thousands of supporters were locked outside, while a gate of 66,124 witnessed the ceremony and the game itself, which started with United - on paper - firmly in the hunt for a third successive league title. Jimmy Murphy fielded exactly the same side which had so heroically overcome Sheffield Wednesday three days earlier, and their character was again thrust under the microscope when Forest took the lead through left winger Stewart Imlach. The patched-up Reds redoubled their efforts, however, and drew level 15 minutes from time through Alex Dawson.
The Aftermath: United won just one of a further 13 league games - a 2-1 victory at Sunderland - and slumped to a ninth-place finish. Wolves took the title, but the Reds' aim was one of rebuilding rather than chasing immediate success. Matt Busby asserted that he would need five years to get United re-established as a footballing power.

OT100 #21: Italians upset

An emotional, draining 1957/58 campaign boiled down to two games; home and away European Cup semi-final ties with Italian giants AC Milan. First up, the Serie A champions came to Old Trafford on 8 May 1958...
The Background: Prior to the Munich disaster, the Busby Babes' final act was to book a European Cup semi-final clash with the mighty Milanese. Although the Reds had reached the FA Cup Final against all odds, a run of just one win in 13 league games didn't bode well for any hope of overcoming Italy's finest. However, Jimmy Murphy's jaded squad had upheld the club's honour after Munich and, although England's decision to take Bobby Charlton on a pre-World Cup tour hardly helped the Reds' chances, they steeled themselves for one more push.
The Occasion: A strong, skilful Milan side dominated the early exchanges, and took the lead on 24 minutes when Uruguayan striker Juan Alberto Schiaffino sent an unerring finish past exposed home goalkeeper Harry Gregg. In response, United adopted an extremely physical approach throughout the remainder of the first half, with The Daily Express' Terence Elliott admitting: "Some of United's first half tackling made me wonder how these Milan boys could take it without retaliation."
The Reds' footballing mantra gradually took over, but two mistakes from visiting centre-back Cesare Maldini - future Italian international manager and father of Milan legend Paolo - gave United a shortcut to victory. First, Dennis Viollet pounced on the defender's underhit backpass to level, then Maldini shoulder-barged the Reds' goalscorer inside the area to concede a penalty. Milan's collective incandescence suggested a soft award, but Ernie Taylor cared not a jot as he rammed in the kick, via the underside of the crossbar.
The Aftermath: United were roundly thrashed in the second leg at the San Siro, six days later. The Italians were level on aggregate within two minutes of kick-off, and ultimately strode to a 4-0 win on the night and advanced to the final, where they were beaten 3-2 by Real Madrid. "We had run out of emotional steam," said Bill Foulkes. "We had put everything into our FA Cup ties to win through to Wembley. By the time the European Cup semi-final had come around, a lot of us were pretty well drained."
What The Papers Said
United Show Their Teeth
"I have never seen a crowd set alight with the flame of victory as this Old Trafford when little Ernie Taylor's penalty rocketed into the net off the underside of the crossbar. They threatened to uproot the whole structure, rising as one man to greet the victory goal."

United began the 1962/63 season with a brand new goal-getter in attack; Scottish international Denis Law. The Lawman went on to establish himself as a club legend, and his Old Trafford tale began with an impressive debut...
The Background: As the post-Munich rebuilding continued, Matt Busby enlisted Scottish striker Denis Law to furnish his side with goals. Busby had failed to lure a teenage Law from Huddersfield Town, but finally got his man after spells with Manchester City and Torino, for a British record fee of £115,000. "It was a strange feeling turning right to Old Trafford instead of left to Maine Road in my car, but it felt good," said Law, who made his United debut six weeks after signing, against West Brom on 18 August, 1962.
The Occasion: David Herd put United ahead within moments of the first whistle, and Law only had to wait until the seventh minute to get a dream debut goal, glancing Johnny Giles' inch-perfect cross inside the far post. However, despite an eye-catching display from the razor-sharp Law, United's blistering start slowly fizzled out, and the Baggies struck twice after the interval to secure a 2-2 draw.
The Aftermath: United's inconsistencies were not conducive to a successful league campaign, and the Reds finished three points above the relegation zone - despite a league haul of 23 goals in 38 games from Law. However, United's unpredictability also spawned a successful FA Cup campaign in which Law scored six in six, including one in a 3-1 win over Leicester City in the final.

Matt Busby's faith in the promotion of young talent was once again demonstrated on 19 September, 1963, when a spindly 17-year-old named George Best was thrust into his first senior start...
The Background: It took all of Busby's efforts to pursuade the quiet Belfast boy that life in Manchester was for him but, once he settled at the club, Best made an eye-catching impact in the Reds' youth ranks. Two years after moving over to England, Best had impressed sufficiently to secure a professional contract and, early in the 1963/64 season, a first sniff of senior action against West Brom.
The Occasion: Before the game, Best sat quietly in the corner of the United dressing room, calmly thumbing through a copy of United Review; a virtual unknown to the 50,453 supporters in the stands. From the first whistle, however, the teenager's talents quickly became apparent as he skipped by visiting players with ease, even nutmegging his marker, experienced Welsh international Graham Williams. Although David Sadler scored the only goal of the game, the terraces hummed throughout the match with talk of the new boy.
The Aftermath: United finished the 1963/64 season in second spot, with Best making an impressive 26 appearances in all competitions. He became a first team regular the following season, forming what would be dubbed 'The Holy Trinity' alongside Bobby Charlton and Denis Law; a triumvirate now immortalised in a statue on Sir Matt Busby Way. Best went on to make 470 United appearances, scoring 179 goals and establishing himself as arguably the most gifted player in the club's history.

Old Trafford's first ever all-English European tie came in December 1963, when United hosted Spurs in the European Cup Winners' Cup second round, second leg...
The Background: Reigning Cup Winners' Cup holders Spurs were frustrated by FA Cup winners United for long periods in the first leg at White Hart Lane, but bagged two goals in the final 20 minutes to establish a 2-0 lead. United's chances of going through were hardly helped by the suspension of striker Denis Law, who had scored 20 goals in as many games in the first four months of the season.
The Occasion: Tottenham were devastated by the early loss of winger Dave Mackay, who suffered a double fracture of his left leg after a 50-50 challenge with Noel Cantwell. In the days before substitutes, Spurs were forced to battle on for 82 minutes with 10 men. By that point, United were already ahead through David Herd's diving header. The striker bagged his second just after half-time, nudging Maurice Setters' goalbound header over the line to level the aggregate score, only for Spurs to quickly hit back through Jimmy Greaves. United were briefly reduced to 10 men while Setters received six stitches in a head wound, but Bobby Charlton popped up late on, rocketing home Pat Crerand passes after 77 and 87 minutes, to send the Reds into the last eight.
The Aftermath: United were paired with Portugal's Sporting Lisbon in the last eight, and looked set for a spot in the semi-finals when Denis Law's hat-trick contributed heavily to a 4-1 first leg win at Old Trafford. Alas, the Reds were torn apart in the second leg; succumbing to early goal rushes in each half as Sporting ran out comfortable 5-0 winners on the night, and 6-4 overall.

Denis Law's goalscoring exploits of the 1963/64 campaign had already set a club record, and he went into the final day of the season with 44 goals in all competitions...
The Background: The Lawman had set United's forward line alight with 29 goals in his maiden campaign at Old Trafford, but his ruthlessness was even icier throughout the 1963/64 season. But, despite Law's goals, the Reds' hopes of First Division, FA Cup and European Cup Winners' Cup glory had been extinguished by Liverpool, West Ham and Sporting Lisbon respectively, all late on in the season. Thus, when Nottingham Forest arrived at Old Trafford on April 25, 1964, the only issue to be resolved was just how many goals Law would end the season with.
The Occasion: True to form, the Scot bagged two more clinical close-range finishes against Forest, and missed a chance to bag an amazing eighth hat-trick of the season late on. Law had to settle for 46 goals from 42 appearances, and he later admitted: "I was flying, but because of injuries and suspensions, I missed another 20 games. That set me wondering: how many goals might I have scored if I had been available for those games?" .
The Aftermath: Although Ruud van Nistelrooy (44 goals in 2002/03) and Cristiano Ronaldo (42 goals in 2007/08) have come close, the Scot's club record remains intact over four decades on, and he is second in the Reds' all-time top goalscorers list with 237 goals from 404 games.

In just the seventh season after Munich, United's rebuilt side mounted a sustained title challenge against bitter rivals Leeds, in a race which went down to the wire...
The Background: Six straight wins, including a vital 1-0 victory at Elland Road, had United in strong contention for the Division One title, lurking a point behind top spot and with a vastly superior goal difference to the rest of the division. League leaders Leeds travelled to Birmingham in their final game of the season, while United simultaneously entertained Arsenal and still had a game against Aston Villa to come.
The Occasion: Matt Busby took the decision to field Denis Law who, hours before kick-off, had been hobbling home from treatment on a gashed knee, and the patched-up Scot promptly bagged two goals. George Best added a third in a 3-1 win, while Leeds, who had fallen 3-0 down before roaring back to 3-3, couldn't conjure a late winner at St Andrews. They had finished their season level on points with United, lagging by 20 in the goal difference stakes, rendering the Reds' final day trip to Aston Villa a formality.
The aftermath: The Reds lost 2-1 at Villa Park, but were nevertheless crowned champions for the sixth time. For Bobby Charlton, United's goalscorer at Villa, the triumph marked United's return from the ashes of Munich. "We were making football that apart from winning matches was also lighting up the sky," he said. "A glow had come back to the environs of Trafford Park and it had nothing to do with the fire and the smoke and the sulphur of the factories. We had made it clear that once again Manchester United could be a great side."

Old Trafford had first staged international football in 1926 and, 40 years later, M16 prepared to play host to the biggest sporting spectacle in the world - the World Cup...
The Background: As soon as England's bid to stage the 1966 World Cup was successful, with Old Trafford established as a group stage venue, changes were actioned. Gone were obstructive roof pillars in the North Stand, and in came cantilevering, along with the first private boxes in English football. With the stage set, Old Trafford was allocated group three, which comprised Brazil, Bulgaria, Hungary and Portugal.
The Occasion: The star draw, Brazil, played each of their three games across the North-West at Goodison Park, prompting attendances which ranged from roughly 48,000 to 62,000 spectators. Old Trafford, handed the less illustrious ties of Portugal against Hungary and Bulgaria, then the meeting between the latter pair, could only boast gates ranging from 22,000 to 37,000. Two wins for Portugal in M16, allied to an eye-catching 3-1 win over Brazil in Merseyside, rendered Hungary's final game win over Bulgaria a dead rubber.
The Aftermath: The Soviet Union ousted Hungary in the second round, but Eusebio's Portugal marched into the semi-finals before exiting to England, courtesy of two Bobby Charlton strikes. In the final, the hosts overcame West Germany after extra time, assuring the 1966 World Cup of an indelible berth in English folklore. Over half a century after its first taste of the globe's biggest sports tournament, Old Trafford is hoping to sample a second World Cup, should England's 2018 bid be successful.

Another season, another tight title race. With Liverpool, United and Forest going for the trophy, the Reds welcomed Forest to Old Trafford in an encounter of huge importance...
The Background: Going into the nitty-gritty of the 1966/67 season, United were a point off league leaders Liverpool, with Nottingham Forest lurking in third spot. When Forest, managed by former United stalwart Johnny Carey, arrived at Old Trafford on February 11, 1967, whoever emerged victorious was well set for the remainder of the run-in.
The Occasion: A tense encounter between two sides full of quality, but well aware of the implications of defeat, yielded few chances. The solitary goal, when it came, wasn't even a half-chance. On 84 minutes, a spell of late United pressure culminated in a right-wing cross slung in by George Best, and met in the most spectacular fashion by Denis Law, who wrapped himself around a Forest centre-back to strike an incredible scissor-kick and send the ball hurtling into the Stretford End goal. The explosiveness of the hit was matched only by that of the euphoric, writhing terrace celebrations as United took a huge step towards the title.
The Aftermath: Matt Busby's Reds remained unbeaten throughout the remainder of the league season, and the gravity of Law's goal only became fully apparent at the end of the season, with second-placed Forest finishing four points off the pace as the Reds regained the Division One title. The victory booked United another crack at the European Cup, which was duly secured for the first time the following season.

In August 1967, United hosted Tottenham in the Charity Shield. The meeting of two top class sides transpired to be a thriller, lit up by one of the greatest goals in Old Trafford history...
The Background: Jimmy Robertson put Spurs ahead within two minutes, then a huge goal kick from Pat Jennings bounced over Alex Stepney to double the visitors' lead inside the first 10 minutes. Then came United's riposte; a stunning goal from Bobby Charlton.
The Occasion: Denis Law won the ball and scampered down the left touchline with blinding pace beating two men, before finding Brian Kidd. The 18-year-old in turn burst infield and slipped the ball to the onrushing Charlton, who unleashed a shot which left Jennings clutching at scorched air. Simple, but devastating, and constructed in the blink of an eye. BBC Commentator Kenneth Wolstenholme exclaimed: "What a goal! That was a goal good enough to win the League, the Cup, the Charity Shield, the World Cup and even the Grand National!"
The Aftermath: Further goals from Charlton and Law, plus one from Frank Saul for Spurs, ensured a 3-3 draw and a shared shield, while United went on to end the season as European champions.
A Knight's Tale
"Denis Law won the ball at the goal-line to the left of the near posts and made off irresistibly down the left side. When the full-back, Joe Kinnear, came to challenge, Denis went by him as though he didn't exist. I had been out on the left, but moved inside to create the space that would accommodate Denis' run. Brian Kidd had already announced an easy ability to slip his marker, and he did this again, perfectly, before inviting a pass.
"Denis laid the ball into Kidd, who quickly rolled it across the front of the 18-yard line and into my path. The shot swirled past Pat Jennings, one of the greatest goalkeepers of all time. The movement lasted no more than five or six seconds. I had made my run without ever being near the ball. The Spurs defence had not come near to closing the hole made for me by Denis Law's charge and the movement of young Kidd."

In November 1999, United became England’s first world champions by beating Copa Libertadores winners Palmeiras in Japan. However, the honour could have been snared when the Reds took on Estudiantes in 1968..
The Background: European Cup winners United took part in a two-legged Intercontinental Cup clash with South American champions Estudiantes. Marcos Conigliaro’s header in Buenos Aires decided a first leg in which United’s bewildered players were pinched, punched and kicked, while head-butt victim Nobby Stiles was sent off for dissent after querying a debatable offside decision.
The Occasion: United's pre-match optimism was rocked when Juan Ramon Veron, future father of Juan Sebastian, headed home after just six minutes and put the Argentines two goals clear. As United toiled manfully against the visitors’ mercilessly brutal approach, bad blood simmered, before eventually spilling over 10 minutes from time. George Best was caught unfairly for the umpteenth time by Jose Medina and landed a right hook on his assailant, who willingly succumbed to gravity and hit the deck. “I decided I’d had enough,” said Best. “I didn’t even wait; I just hit him and walked off. There wasn’t much point in trying to play football, because they wouldn’t let you.” Both players were sent off and the game spiralled to a furious finish. Willie Morgan levelled matters on the night by poking in a Pat Crerand free-kick three minutes from time, before a dramatic final act. Brian Kidd slid home Morgan’s cross to spark scenes of fervent celebration, but referee Constantin Zecevic had blown for full-time seconds earlier.
The Aftermath: United's 1968/69 season ended in widespread disappointment, with a mid-table First Division finish, a European Cup semi-final exit to AC Milan and an FA Cup sixth round defeat to Everton. World rule did beckon, however, as the Reds overcame Palmeiras in 1999, and the feat was matched in December 2008 at the expense of LDU Quito in Japan.
"United found themselves facing hustlers; highly intelligent, markedly skilled men who knew every wrinkle in the book, men who could look after themselves in the darkest corners."

After the glory of Wembley, an inconsistent 1968/69 season meant United's sole hope of snaring silverware lay in defending the European Cup. At the semi-final stage, AC Milan were the Reds' illustrious opponents...
The Background: Milan strode to a 2-0 first leg win in the San Siro, with United's John Fitzpatrick red-carded and ruled out of the second leg. A crowd of 63,103 made for a deafening din hours before kick-off when the teams reconvened at Old Trafford three weeks later, as the Reds sought desperately to cling onto a trophy that had been so coveted for so long.
The Occasion: With no pressure to attack, Milan were happy to smother United's forward line, with little Giovanni Lodetti the chief destroyer in the centre of midfield. Wave after wave of attack from the white-clad hosts crashed into nothingness on the Italians' defensive rocks, before Bobby Charlton rifled home an unstoppable finish at the Stretford End on 70 minutes. Shortly afterwards, Old Trafford erupted as Denis Law's shot seemingly rolled well over Fabio Cudicini's line; only for the celebrations to be curtailed as the officials failed to award the goal. United's incensed players ultimately ran out of time as the visitors booked a final berth against Ajax.
The Aftermath: Milan succeeded United as European champions; storming to a 4-1 win in the Santiago Bernabeu. The Reds, meanwhile, would not sample European Cup football again for almost 25 years. Snaring the inaugural Premier League title meant Old Trafford could welcome back the big time, as Hungarian champions Kipest Honved arrived in M16 in September 1993.
Eyewitness Account
"I've never witnessed anything like the Milan game in my life - it's the nearest I've seen to mass hysteria. I was right in line with the goal-line and the ball went well over the line. I'll never forget that. When it went in, I remember looking at the Stretford End and it was an incredible sight because of the way everybody used to tumble down; it was just a mass of humanity in there, throwing themselves about, and the noise - I was shaking until I went to bed that night. Everybody solidly believed it was a goal."

Not even extra time could separate Chelsea and Leeds in the 1970 FA Cup Final, so they resumed their fierce rivalry at Old Trafford 18 days later...
The Background: Despite a Wembley turf almost entirely covered with sand after hosting the Horse of the Year show a week earlier, the original Final was a thrilling affair between two sides blessed with grit and guile. Leeds led twice and were pegged back both times, despite edging an epic 120-minute encounter. A replay was required, and Old Trafford became the Final's first non-Wembley hosts for the first time since 1923.
The Occasion: A spellbinding run from Alan Clarke forged an opportunity for Mick Jones to hammer in an unstoppable opener for Leeds, 10 minutes before the break. Although the Whites continued to dominate another high-quality encounter, Chelsea drew level with little more than 10 minutes remaining in the second period, as Peter Osgood dived to head in Charlie Cooke's cross. The two sides continued to duke it out throughout extra time, but the Blues grabbed the winner when Ian Hutchinson's gargantuan throw-in was inadvertantly flicked on by Jack Charlton, giving right-back David Webb the chance to nod home and make himself the hero of the hour.
The Aftermath: Chelsea had their first FA Cup triumph, but Leeds would only have to wait another two years to break their own duck, at the expense of Arsenal. As for the FA Cup Final, it remained Wembley property until the stadium's redevelopment in 2000; at which point Cardiff's Millennium Stadium became the showpiece's home for the next six seasons.

George Best lavished countless gifts upon the Old Trafford gallery during his legendary United career; and few are more cherished than his sumptuous Stretford End lob against Tottenham in February, 1971...
The Background: The beauty of Best was the ease with which he could wave his wand, regardless of circumstance. United were languishing in 14th spot when high-flying Tottenham arrived in M16, but a touch of Ulster magic left countryman Pat Jennings red-faced and inspired an unlikely victory for Matt Busby’s side.
The Occasion: With the game goalless, Spurs goalkeeper Jennings contested a lofted cross with United winger Willie Morgan, from which the ball spun loose to Best, 15 yards from goal. The winger’s view consisted of Jennings on his six yard line, two Tottenham defenders on the goal-line and another adversary two yards away, and closing fast. No matter. The Ulsterman needed just two touches; one for chest control, the other to arc a gentle lob over all his opponents, dipping just in time to comfortably limbo under the Stretford End crossbar. Mere mortals would have struggled to get a shot off, but Best displayed the rarest ataraxia to simply bypass every obstacle. While a crowd of helpless players flapped and muddled around in vain attempts to stop the inevitable, George’s only subsequent movement was to lean around the melee to watch his shot drop into the net.
The Aftermath: The goal provoked the most understated of responses from Best, who simply raised an index finger skywards and walked away, smiling. All around him rang scoffs of amazement, while up on the gantry, BBC commentator Barry Davies could only marvel: “Beautiful. Absolutely beautiful."

After amassing a club record number of goals and appearances, Bobby Charlton - the player, at least - waved farewell to Old Trafford on 23 April, 1973...
The Background: Towards the end of the 1972/73 season, Bobby Charlton decided that his playing days were numbered. "Deep down I was perturbed, even a little scared about what awaited me," he recalls. "But I also knew that, like every player before me, I had a duty to represent only the best of myself on and off the field. If I felt something vital had gone out of my game, and my feelings for it, I had no option but to leave."
The Occasion: As United stumbled towards the end of another difficult campaign, Sheffield United provided the opposition in the final home game of the season. News had already spread that Charlton would be hanging up his boots, and 57,280 supporters swelled Old Trafford to say their goodbyes. An emotional afternoon culminated in a 2-1 defeat for the Reds, but the home support cheered long and loud after the final whistle for a man who had become a living United legend, while Charlton himself described the scenes as 'inevitably poignant.'
The Aftermath: Having been afforded a rapturous reception by all corners of Stamford Bridge in his last competitive United game, against Chelsea, Charlton turned his hand to coaching. He became manager, then briefly player-manager, at Preston North End for two seasons, but returned to Old Trafford as a member of the club's board in 1984. Knighted in 1994, Sir Bobby remains a United ambassador, as well as the club's record goalscorer and second-highest appearance-maker, behind Ryan Giggs.

Having rejoined his former side, Manchester City, Denis Law returned to Old Trafford on an afternoon in 1974 when the Reds stared in the face of relegation...
The Background: A miserable season for Tommy Docherty's United culminated in a final day Manchester derby, where even victory wouldn't be enough if both Southampton and Birmingham won their own games. Lining up for the visitors, even though he openly didn't want to take part, was Reds legend Denis Law.
The Occasion: A scrappy game seemed destined for a draw until late on, when Law backheeled in an outrageous goal at the Scoreboard End. Mortified that his attempt had beaten Alex Stepney, the Lawman did not celebrate as he was mobbed by jubilant team-mates. The goal prompted a pitch invasion of fans, not attempting to get to their former idol; instead trying to prompt the abandonment of the fixture, in which they succeeded.
The Aftermath: Although eight minutes of playing time still remained, the Football Association deemed that the result should stand, sending United down to Division Two. Results elsewhere meant that Law's goal was not responsible for the Reds' relegation, although the goal remains one of the defining moments of the Scot's epic career. Upon returning from the 1974 World Cup months later, Law decreed that it was time to retire.

After the disappointment of relegation in 1974, United wasted little time in plotting an escape route from Division Two...
The Background: United won the opening four games of the 1974/75 season to top the table, and headed the chasing pack for the remainder of the campaign. Victory at Southampton had secured United's promotion with three games to spare, and a draw at Notts County in the penultimate game of the season assured the Reds of heading up as champions. Thus, the final game of the season against Blackpool was a no-strings attached affair; fun for all.
The Occasion: A whopping 58,769 supporters crammed into Old Trafford to say farewell to second tier football, and Tommy Docherty's side turned on the style with a rip-roaring 4-0 win through goals from Stuart Pearson (2), Lou Macari and Brian Greenhoff. At full time, jubilant United supporters cascaded onto the field to join the Doc and his triumphant players.
The Aftermath: United's return to the top flight was sensational, topping the First Division for the opening two months of the campaign and ultimately finishing third, behind champions Liverpool and QPR. However, disappointment beckoned in the FA Cup, where United were shocked by Second Division Southampton in the final at Wembley.

Having overcome St Etienne in the 1977/78 European Cup Winners' Cup first round, United were next paired with a talented Porto side...
The Background: United took a hammering in the first leg over in Portugal, as Brazilian striker Duda inspired the hosts to a 4-0 victory. The nature of the Reds' annihilation yielded little hope for the second leg at Old Trafford, but manager Tommy Docherty merely encouraged his bold, free-flowing side to throw caution to the wind in front of an impressively optimistic 51,381-strong crowd.
The Occasion: The Reds flew out of the traps, and moved ahead within eight minutes through Steve Coppell, who turned in an electrifying performance all evening. Although Porto winger Arsenio Seninho levelled with a solo strike on 30 minutes, a Murca own goal and Jimmy Nicholl's strike had the Reds 3-1 ahead at the break. Coppell struck again after the interval to prolong United's hopes, and the Reds continued to apply non-stop pressure throughout, only for Seninho to extinguish all optimism on 84 minutes after another winding run and shot on the counter-attack. There was still time for Stuart Pearson to force another own goal from Murca, but United ultimately bowed out 5-6 on aggregate.
The Aftermath: United's heroics earned deserved plaudits, but the Reds were left cursing the defensive lapses which had allowed Seninho to fire his side into the next round. Pearson could only lament: "If we hadn't given those two stupid breakaway goals away in the second leg, it would have been hailed as one of the great fightbacks of all time."
Such Glorious Failure, United
"Fighting hearts, dauntless determination and non-stop aggression were not enough last night to save magnificent Manchester United from failure in the Cup Winners' Cup. But this was surely the most glorious failure since the Charge of the Light Brigade. So savage was the pounding to which they subjected the panic-stricken Portuguese that there could be no man among Porto players who would not admit, if he were honest, that for the visiting side it was a lucky escape."

100 years after a group of railway workers formed the Newton Heath L&YR FC, Manchester United welcomed Real Madrid to M16 for a glorious celebration...
The Background: Newton Heath L&YR FC, latterly Newton Heath, formed back in 1878, before becoming Manchester United in 1902. To mark a century since the Heathens' formation, the club arranged a special pre-season friendly with Real Madrid. The Spanish giants had competed in regular mid-season friendlies with the Reds during the 1950s and 1960s, and were more than happy to visit Manchester on 7 August, 1978.
The Occasion: Pre-match, representatives from worldwide United supporters clubs paraded around the Old Trafford turf on a balmy evening. While Real's European success had dried up in comparison to their glorious 1950's era, the Spaniards arrived in M16 having just clinched a third La Liga title in four years. Few among the crowd of almost 50,000 could have predicted such a one-sided affair, then, as United romped to a 4-0 win through braces from Brian Greenhoff and Lou Macari.
The Aftermath: The first season of United's second century, 1978/79, was one of marginally more lows than highs. Mid-table mediocrity beckoned at the end of a mixed First Division campaign, while the Reds were left stunned by a last-gasp FA Cup Final defeat to Arsenal. Trailing 2-0 with five minutes remaining, United scored twice in four minutes to level but then immediately conceded again as the Gunners won 3-2 in normal time.

On 30 December, 1978, West Bromwich Albion visited Old Trafford for the final league match of the year...
The Background: Dave Sexton's Reds were unpredictable throughout the 1978/79 campaign, and went into their clash against the Baggies on the back of three-goal defeats against Bolton and Liverpool. Under Ron Atkinson, the visitors were enjoying a successful season and arrived full of confidence. Both sides were renowned for serving up attacking football and goal-laden games, and they didn't disappoint...
The Occasion: Brian Greenhoff opened the scoring with a magnificent 25-yard volley for the Reds, only for the Baggies to turn the game on its head with Tony Brown's well-taken snapshot and a scorching 18-yarder from Len Cantello. However, Gordon McQueen's free header and Sammy McIlroy's near-post shot edged United ahead, before Brown equalised again with the final act of the first half. Even Atkinson lost track, and assured his players at half-time that they didn't deserve to be losing. When Brown pointed out that they weren't, Atkinson simply said: "fair enough, go get me a winner." Despite his uncertainty, the Baggies heeded their manager's words and took all three points through clinical finishes from Laurie Cunningham and Cyrille Regis.
The Aftermath: United finished the season in ninth spot, while the Baggies went on to claim third and reached the quarter-finals of the UEFA Cup. Sexton's tenure as manager lasted until 1981, when Atkinson ended his term at the Hawthorns and took the Old Trafford helm.

Bryan Robson's arrival as United's British record signing was formalised on the Old Trafford pitch on 3 October 1981, ahead of a devastating display against Wolves...
The Background: One of the stars in Ron Atkinson's West Brom team of the late 1970s and early 1980s, Bryan Robson was one of England's hottest properties in 1981. Liverpool and United both went in for the talented young midfielder, but the Merseysiders' reluctance to bid more than £1million left the door ajar for the Reds. Their £1.5million bid secured Robbo's services, and an enduring bond between player and club was born.
The Occasion: Now manager at Old Trafford, Atkinson's love for the razzle-dazzle, showbiz side of the game led to Robson completing the signing of his contract on the OT turf, shortly before kick-off between United and Wolves. Flanked by his new manager and chairman, a somewhat hirsuite Robson penned his deal and headed straight up to the stands. Whether naturally on song or galvanized by the presence of the expensive new-boy, United tore the visitors apart, winning 5-0 through a Sammy McIlroy hat-trick, and further goals from Garry Birtles and Frank Stapleton.
The Aftermath: Robson made his debut four days later, in a League Cup defeat at Tottenham, and went on to enjoy one of the most distinguished careers in United history. 'Captain Marvel' made 461 appearances and scored 99 goals, and continues to command legendary status among United supporters, as well as an ambassadorial role for the club.

The 29th home fixture of an epic 1982/83 season saw United take on Luton Town, bidding to protect a season-long unbeaten record...
The Background: Never before had Old Trafford seen an entire season without a United defeat. Across an entire league campaign, plus runs to the finals of the FA Cup and League Cup, and a UEFA Cup draw with Valencia, the Reds had posted 20 wins and eight draws. The final home game of the campaign welcomed struggling Luton Town to M16.
The Occasion: United's record was never in doubt, as the Hatters were blown away without a hint of resistance. Paul McGrath bagged the only brace of his United career with two close-range finishes, while top goalscorer Frank Stapleton bagged goal number 18 of his joint most prolific season.
The Aftermath: Although an impressive league campaign finished with defeats at Tottenham and Notts County, the Reds went back to Wembley for the second time in two months. Liverpool had edged the League Cup Final after extra time in March, but United overcame Brighton after a replay to win the FA Cup Final.

“The best atmosphere I experienced at Old Trafford,” was Bryan Robson’s description of the soil-shaking din which soundtracked United’s European Cup Winners' Cup quarter-final clash with Barcelona on 21 March, 1984...
The Background: The Catalans arrived at Old Trafford with a 2-0 first leg lead, after United had passed up plentiful chances in Camp Nou. Bryan Robson, in particular, carried the burden of the defeat, and he promised to atone for his misses by scoring in the second leg. Regardless, few gave United any hope beforehand, especially with the mercurial Diego Maradona in the visitors' ranks.
The Occasion: The Reds set about their visitors like a pack of starving dogs. Remi Moses hounded Maradona into sulking submission, Norman Whiteside and Frank Stapleton snapped away upfront and the back five remained fiercely impervious throughout. But at the heart of everything was Robson. After 22 minutes, he’d delivered his pre-match promise with a diving header. Shortly after half-time, Captain Marvel pounced on a goalkeeping error from Javier Urruti to slide United level. When Frank Stapleton smashed in a close range shot a minute later, the Reds were home and hosed.
The Aftermath: At full-time, hundreds of jubilant fans cascaded onto the pitch, hastening the exit of United’s leaden legged players, most of whom could summon one final burst of energy to dash for dressing room sanctuary. Robson, however, wasn’t so fortunate. Initially surrounded by a couple of supporters, he was soon at the centre of a hundred, carried shoulder-high and unable to do any more than pump a celebratory fist at the adoring Stretford End. “My name was being sung and my back slapped till it hurt,” he said. “But it was one of those nights you dream about and treasure for the rest of your life.” Alas, United's run was halted at the semi-final stage by Juventus, who followed a 1-1 draw at Old Trafford with a 2-1 second leg victory in Turin to progress at the Reds' expense.
What The Papers Said
"United made the mountain they had to climb look like a molehill. They got their three goals with time, strength and stamina to spare on a night of drama that has seldom been equalled at Old Trafford."

Ron Atkinson's United made a record-breaking start to the 1985/86 league season...
The Background: United's long quest to regain the First Division title was seemingly set to end in 1986. The Reds made a blistering start to the league season, winning their first nine in a row, and Southampton arrived at Old Trafford on 28 September, 1985 aiming to end the run.
The Occasion: While Chris Nicholl's side were admirably tough to break down, United created and passed up a string of chances, before Mark Hughes thundered home a close-range finish to give the Reds all three points, a 10th straight victory and the best chance in almost two decades of bringing the title back to Old Trafford.
The Aftermath: A series of injuries to Bryan Robson derailed United's season, and the Reds slipped to 10 defeats in the final 27 league games. That collapse allowed champions Everton and neighbours Liverpool to make for the line side-by-side, and the latter took the title with 10 wins from the final 11 games.

Alex Ferguson ushered in a new era at Old Trafford with his first home game in charge of the Reds on 22 November, 1986, when his United hosted QPR...
The Background: Although the Reds had taken just one point from Ferguson's opening two games, at Oxford and Norwich, the new manager's debut programme notes laid bare his mantra. "Taking over a club of magnitude of Manchester United is an awesome prospect," he wrote. "But ultimately a football club is a football club and I shall simply try to run things at Old Trafford in what I believe to be the right way. I am not really interested in what has happened here in the past. I don't mean any disrespect to the great achievements of Manchester United over the years. It's simply that now there is only one way to go, and that is forward."
The Occasion: Baby steps though they were, the way forward began with a narrow victory over Jim Smith's visitors. The Reds were yet to score in two games under the new manager, but that duck was broken when Danish international John Sivebaek curled home a 20-yard free kick on 33 minutes. While there were nervy moments for a team still coming to terms with the shift change of Ron Atkinson to Ferguson, the Reds held on for a vital victory.
The Aftermath: For Sivebaek, it would be the zenith of his United career. The Dane was sold to St Etienne the following summer, but remains content with his place in United folklore. "The manager was delighted afterwards," he recalls. "It is always nice to be in the history books and to score the first goal for a new manager - one that wins the game - was great." The Dane's solitary Old Trafford season ended in an 11th-placed finish. Some 23 years on, his former manager is still going strong.

The winds of change invariably whisper through Old Trafford during pre-season, but few summers have known as much upheaval as in 1989...
The Background: Michael Knighton was presented to the press as the club’s new owner and chairman the day before the Reds welcomed champions Arsenal to M16. Old Trafford buzzed with expectation before kick-off, and the clamour grew when Knighton took to the field - in full United strip and tracksuit top - and began ball juggling. By the end of his cameo, the property magnate had won the crowd, as well as his battle with an imaginary goalkeeper, as he hoofed the ball into the Stretford End goal.
The Occasion: The unlikely sideshow galvanized both support and players for the main event, and Steve Bruce headed the opener after just two minutes. David Rocastle levelled, but United were rampant. The Sundays Times’ Brian Glanville mused: “Such was the effect of his performance, Knighton may have thought perhaps he should come on to the field again at half-time.” Even without further capering, United retook the lead when Mark Hughes tore past David O’Leary and thundered in a low shot. When Webb lashed home from distance and McClair added a magnificent late fourth via the crossbar, some 47,000 faces beamed as brightly as the August sun.
The Aftermath: The afternoon promised much, but Arsenal’s drubbing proved the zenith of a league season in which United finished 13th. A successful FA Cup campaign hinted at the silver-lined future in store, but Knighton would play little part. His bid for ownership was shelved, and he settled for a place on the board and permanent residence in Old Trafford folklore for his showmanship. “I don't regret it, not one bit,' he said in 2008. “It made everybody happy - for 64 hours or so I was a hero.”

Every legend has a beginning, and the unparalleled senior career of Ryan Giggs began with his senior debut on 2 March 1991...
The Background: United were crippled by injuries and amid a wretched run of form when Everton arrived at Old Trafford. Manager Alex Ferguson padded his squad with a young pup named Ryan Giggs, who had been catching the eye in the club's Youth and Reserve teams. Only recently turned 17, the whispy winger took his place on the bench alongside Russell Beardsmore.
The Occasion: Mike Newell fired the visitors ahead after 33 minutes, and United's plight worsened when Denis Irwin picked up a hamstring injury two minutes later. A reshuffle was required, with Giggs introduced and paired upfront with the diminutive Danny Wallace. Within four minutes, Dave Watson headed home the visitors' second, and the veteran Toffees defender spent the rest of the afternoon terrorising his junior opponent. "All I can really remember is getting kicked by Watson," recalls Giggs. "The ball was played up to me and he came straight through me from behind. That was his way of saying 'Welcome to the big boys' league.'"
The Aftermath: The Reds went on to finish sixth in the First Division, but finished runners-up in the League Cup and won the European Cup Winners' Cup. Giggs made just one more appearance in the 1990/91 campaign, scoring the winner on his first start against Manchester City, and has since gone on to become a legendary club figure with over 800 appearances and 150 goals to show for an epic, and ongoing, United career.
"It should have been a celebration, but it felt more like a wake. It was widely described as one of our worst performances of the season. The Gaffer said we were second to every ball and lacked imagination. He was spot on."

In unusual circumstances, United's first appearance in the UEFA Super Cup took place on home soil, on 19 November, 1991...
The Background: By virtue of United's win over Barcelona in the European Cup Winners' Cup Final, and Red Star Belgrade's penalty shootout victory against Marseille in the European Cup Final, the two sides met in the UEFA Super Cup. As war brewed in Yugoslavia, UEFA decreed the tie would be a one-off final at Old Trafford.
The Occasion: Watched by a paltry crowd of just 22,110, United were led a merry dance for much of the game by an incredibly skilful, fast flowing Red Star side. “Anyone who was at that game must still be wondering how we managed to win it,” Sir Alex Ferguson admits. “I know I am. In the first half, Dejan Savicevic was absolutely sensational and it was a miracle that we came in level at half-time." Brian McClair's deployment as a withdrawn striker in the second half stemmed the tide, and the Scot even popped up to pinch a close-range winner just after the hour. "They battered us, then somehow I managed to get the winner," recalls the striker. "It was a robbery."
The Aftermath: Red Star's much-fabled side had its brightest talents cherry-picked by European giants, while United would have to be patient in continental terms. Although the Premier League title followed within two years, it was 1999 before the Reds ruled Europe. In two subsequent Super Cup Finals, against Lazio (1999) and Zenit St Petersburg (2008), United have lost out by the odd goal each time.

On 2 May 1992, Old Trafford hosted its final game with terracing behind the Stretford End, as it prepared to enter the Premier League era as an all-seater stadium…
The Background: After the tragedy of Hillsborough and the recommendations of the subsequent Taylor report, Old Trafford was required to become all-seater. United decided that, as soon as the 1991/92 season had finished, work would begin to replace the stadium's standing areas. Just six days after the heartbreaking, title-tipping defeat to Liverpool at Anfield, Old Trafford hosted Spurs to round off the season and say farewell to the terraces.
The Occasion: Tough as it was, so soon after seeing the First Division title snatched away by Leeds, those on the Stretford End sought to make the most of the occasion by providing a rousing atmosphere throughout the 90 minutes. On the field, the Reds registered a first win in five games, thanks to a Mark Hughes brace and a 25th goal of the season from top scorer Brian McClair.
The Aftermath: For United, the Premier League era began with home games attracting a gate of just over 30,000 per game as the Stretford End underwent its total facelift. For the final three games of the 1992/93 season, those gates had swelled to just over 40,000. By the start of United's first title defence in 26 years, OT's capacity was at an all-time low of just under 45,000. In the intervening 15 years, the addition of extra tiers to the North Stand, Stretford End, Scoreboard End and quadrant development have taken the current limit to 75,797.

To commemorate Old Trafford's 100th anniversary, ManUtd.com and MUTV have been collating opinions and memories of the world's finest football stadium.
Current and former players, fans and club staff have all contributed. Quotes include:

On This Day: 19 February 1910
One hundred years ago today, Old Trafford opened its gates for the first time as United faced Liverpool in the top flight of English football. And although fortunes on the field may have favoured the visitors, there were still celebrations in Manchester at the birth of an impressive new stadium...
The background: United chairman John Henry Davies stumped up £60,000 of his own money for the construction of a new ground in 1909, enlisting Scottish architect Archibald Leitch, the mastermind behind Hampden Park, to design it. After months of construction by Messrs Brameld and Smith of Manchester, Old Trafford was ready to host its first game.
The occasion: A crowd of circa 45,000 witnessed a seven-goal thriller on a pitch "as spick and span, as smooth, and as green as a billiard table" (The Manchester Guardian). United roared into a 3-0 lead through Sandy Turnbull's diving header plus strikes from Tom Homer and George Wall. However, Liverpool hit back through Arthur Goddard (2) and James Stewart (2) to win 4-3.
The team: United's first-ever line-up at Old Trafford was as follows - Harry Moger; George Stacey, Vince Hayes; Dick Duckworth, Charlie Roberts, Sam Blott; Billy Meredith, Harold Halse, Tom Homer, Sandy Turnbull, George Wall.
The aftermath: The inaugural defeat to Liverpool was the Reds' only setback at Old Trafford during 1909/10. Ernest Mangnall's men won their last seven home games and finished fifth in the First Division - eight places higher than the previous season. The Theatre of Dreams was already starting to work its magic on Manchester United...

Old Trafford, the stadium for Manchester United, was opened. A crowd estimated at 80,000 watched as the Red Devils lost to visiting Liverpool F.C., 4-3. Over 100 years, a roof, lighting and seats have been added and the site now seats 76,212.

Seabad Teater Mimpi
Arya Perdhana
detiksport
Setelah satu abad, stadion Old Trafford menegaskan diri sebagai stadion istimewa.
Berbulan-bulan, konstruksi dikerjakan oleh firma Messrs Brameld and Smith of Manchester.
Old Trafford kebagian menggelar laga final ulangan Piala FA 1911 antara Bradford City vs Newcastle United.
Setelah dibuka lagi pada tahun 1949, Old Trafford terus berbenah.

Manchester United's Old Trafford development plan hits the buffers on 100th birthday
Manchester United are unlikely to continue the redevelopment of Old Trafford in the coming years, largely because of a railway line situated behind the main stand.
The 76,000-seater stadium is the largest club ground in the country and has undergone progressive restructuring over the last 20 years. However, the main stand has remained untouched since the 1970s.
But now in its centenary year, Old Trafford seems to be staying as it is.

Troublesome track: Old Trafford's main stand backs onto a railway line
Old Trafford has undergone major works in the last 20 years

Under construction: Old Trafford has undergone major works in the last 20 years
'There are two limiting factors to any possible expansion of the main stand,' said United's Group Property Manager George Johnstone.
'Primarily the railway line, but there are also several privately owned properties beyond that which could be an issue if a new stand was to span the railway and have footings in that area.
'It would be very costly and technically difficult. We haven't really looked at the figures, but an expanded stand may only give us an extra 12-16,000 seats.

Theatre of Dreams: The Old Trafford faithful whip up an electric atmosphere
'The numbers need to stack up. Demand is an issue, so perhaps the current capacity of just over 76,000 is appropriate at this stage.'
At the time of Taylor Report, which came in the wake of the 1989 Hillsborough disaster and called for stadiums to be all-seater, the capacity of the 'Threatre of Dreams' was just 44,000.

World leader: The monumental Rungrado May Day Stadium in Pyongyang, North Korea holds a staggering 150,000 people.
Manchester United's continued success on the field, though, has neccessitated the growth and
Old Trafford's most recent expansion, which took place between July 2005 and May 2006, saw an increase of around 8,000 seats with the addition of second tiers to both the north-west and north-east quadrants of the ground.
However, it lags someway behind the world leaders. The monumental Rungrado May Day Stadium in Pyongyang, North Korea is the largest stadium in the world. It was built in 1989 and seats a staggering 150,000 people.

Manchester United's Old Trafford stadium designed to be a theatre of dreams from 1910
For the workers hurrying from their factories a century ago today, crossing the Canal Bridge and streaming towards the gleaming turnstiles, Manchester United’s new abode appeared more than a home fit for footballing heroes.
http://i.telegraph.co.uk/telegraph/multimedia/archive/01581/Old_Traffod_1581474c.jpg
Old Trafford was a mission statement, a declaration of ambition, a trait the club has never lost even during the dark moments which have punctuated the ensuing, eventful 100 years.
For the young apprentices leading the charge as their Saturday shift ended, Old Trafford truly dominated their horizon. Unlike United’s former residence, the Bank Street ground hemmed in by terraced housing, a place so dilapidated it had blown over in a gale two days before, this sporting palace was set in 16 acres. Anticipation rose and rose as supporters flocked towards it like pilgrims.
Old Trafford is not a ground chanced upon; like the club at times, it brashly proclaims its presence from some distance. It is built to impress.
Archibald Leitch’s original design has been updated, in keeping with the demands of the Taylor Report and the corporate classes, but it has always been a stadium with stature. Results reflect that: of the 1,550 games United have played at Old Trafford in the Premier League and old First Division, they have won 916 and drawn 368, scoring 3,009 goals.
For the club’s ardent followers arriving for that historic first match, appropriately against their great rivals Liverpool, the inside inspired as much awe as Leitch’s imposing exterior. Confirming that overspending is not a new phenomenon, Leitch went wildly over budget, doubling the £30,000 initial estimate. Fortunately for United, they had a generous patron in John H Davies.
Never mind the cost, thought the fans, feel the quality of what one newspaper hailed as “a tip-top home’’. The supporters were too busy scampering along Leitch’s tunnels, discovering what would soon become familiar trails to favoured vantage points.
Weaving through the crush barriers, all patented by the resourceful Leitch, some fans raced to the front, standing as close as they could to the action. Those on the lowest step were eye-level with the pitch. Their idols, men such as Sandy Turnbull and Billy Meredith, must have looked immense, almost God-like figures, stretching up to the heavens.
“My dad attended the game as a teenage apprentice millwright, having walked through from Trafford Park in his working clothes – complete with hobnailed boots and the obligatory flat cap –and paying his tanner at the turnstile,’’ recalls the football statistician John Russell, who inherited his father’s passion for United. “He told me the pitch looked good enough to play cricket on, even in February. To see his heroes, Billy Meredith, Charlie Roberts, Sandy Turnbull et al, running out in their red shirts was a great thrill.’’
With players of that calibre, United needed a good playing surface. Bank Street, by all contemporary accounts, was home to a quagmire. In constructing a new habitat for Ernest Mangnall’s team, Leitch understood the importance of drainage, sunlight and airflow in maintaining the grass. (Modern architects, please take note).
Old Trafford was immediately lauded by commentators. In the Feb 20, 1910 edition of The Umpire, their correspondent “Forerunner’’ breathlessly saluted “a beautiful green plush carpet’’. In a concluding flourish, “Forerunner’’ declared: “I know groundsmen who would weep at the thought of using such a perfect pitch for so reckless a game but football knows no sentiment.’’ Quite right.
The Sporting Chronicle acclaimed “the most handsomest, the most spacious and the most remarkable arena I have ever seen. As a football ground it is unrivalled in the world, it is an honour to Manchester and the home of a team who can do wonders when they are so disposed’’.
Having moved into their new home, United finished fifth, first, 13th, fourth, 14th and 18th before the Kaiser stopped play in the League for four years.
In its century of existence, Old Trafford has staged 2,224 United first-team games, comprising those 1,550 top-flight League games and 210 old Second Division matches, 133 European games, 141 FA Cup matches, 85 League Cup ties, 98 wartime fixtures (72 WW1, 26 WW2), four Charity Shields, two Screen Sports Super Cup ties and one Fifa World Club Championship match.
United’s frequent investment in the ground is reflected in the record attendances. While many stadiums have shrunk in capacity as all-seat requirements consumed the broad expanses of the old terraces, Old Trafford’s record has stayed constant: 76,962 under the old Leitch design (Wolves-Grimsby Town in an FA Cup semi-final of 1939) and the current modernised stadium of 76,098 (versus Blackburn Rovers in 2007).
The joy of Old Trafford is that the best numerical figures are associated with the best flesh-and-blood figures. Ryan Giggs has made the most appearances (398). Bobby Charlton has the most starts (370) and also the most goals (141). Denis Law has scored the most hat-tricks (12).
With such great stars providing such grand statistics, millions have fallen in love with Old Trafford over the past century. Players and supporters make stadiums special but in Old Trafford, Leitch designed a setting to inspire everybody. No wonder those workers rushed from the factory.

Stadium set for centenary match
Sunday 14 March will be a very special matchday at Old Trafford as United officially celebrate 100 years since the stadium opened.
http://picsrv.manutd.com/?fif=/manu/img_10_33568_3219.jpg&obj=iip,1.0&wid=480&hei=179&rgn=0.07719928186714542,0.10933333333333334,0.8617 594254937162,0.4773333333333334&cvt=jpeg
Fulham is the first weekend home fixture since the anniversary and as such, various plans are in place to mark the milestone - including the presence of some specially-invited guests.
Relatives of the 1910 United team - and of then chairman J H Davies and stadium architect Archibald Leitch - will be entertained at Sunday's game.
A time capsule containing United memorabilia will be sealed by the relatives and buried close to the centre tunnel – the only remaining part of the original stadium.
A replica of the programme from the inaugural match - against Liverpool on 19 February 1910 - will be distributed to every fan passing through the turnstiles.
One hundred free tickets have been issued to local residents through the Gorse Hill Partnership, a link-up between United and Trafford Borough Council.
Banners in the North Stand tunnel tell the story of OT's development, while the artwork of local school children is on display in the Family Stand concourse.
A special 100 Years of Old Trafford magazine will be on sale around the ground.
Club secretary Ken Ramsden says, "The club is immensely proud to have been at Old Trafford for 100 years. To celebrate the centenary with our supporters is very important."

Sehari nabung Rp 25.000 sama dengan sebulan nabung Rp 750.000,-
Nah Rp 750.000 x 36 bulan (3 tahun) = Rp 27.000.000, -
Eh tolong koreksi yach jika saya salah.
Mungkin teman-teman yang pernah ke Old Trafford mau berbagi cerita ?

Old Trafford to host League One and League Two play-off fina
Two finals @ OT
By Chris, TheFootballNetwork
Manchester United’s Old Trafford home will play host to the League One and League Two play-off finals in 2011. The games, of course, are usually played at Wembley - but the Football League has announced the move due to a clash with the Champions League final.
Red Devils chief executive David Gill has said he is “delighted” that Old Trafford will host two play-off finals this season.
The Championship play-off final will remain at Wembley on its traditional Bank Holiday Monday slot, but the League One and Two finals will be moved due to a clash with Europe’s showpiece final.
Wembley will host Europe's showpiece on May 28th; with the League Two final due to take place at Old Trafford on the same day.
The League One final will also be at the Theatre of Dreams on the Sunday.
Huddersfield Town, Southampton, Peterborough and Milton Keynes Dons currently occupy the play-off spots in England's third tier, whilst Shrewsbury Town, Port Vale, Crewe Alexandra and Bury sit in the League Two play-off places.

Old Trafford, Taman Impian "Setan Merah"
KompasBola.com - 26/7/2009 | 01:46 WIB
http://www.kompas.com/data/photo/2009/07/26/0145482p.jpg
Sejak itu, Old Trafford bagaikan tempat peribadatan penting sepak bola Inggris. Meski kemudian muncul stadion-stadion bagus, termasuk Wembley, namun nilai historis dan gengsi Old Trafford tak pernah sirna.
Bagi Manchester United, Old Trafford bagaikan taman impian.
Butuh waktu nyaris 9 tahun untuk kembali menghidupkan kembali Old Trafford. Praktis, dalam delapan musim Liga Utama Inggris absen ddi Old Trafford.
Kapasitas stadion pun naik turun. Setelah kasus tragedi di Stadion Hillsborough, 1989, kapastias dikurangi menjadi 45.000, bahkan kemudian 43.000. Kapasitas tersedikit sepanjang sejarah Old Trafford.
Maka, penambahan kapasitas pun terus dilakukan.
Bahkan, Manchester United punya rencana besar.
(HPR)

• Dari April sampai November, rumput Old Trafford dipotong tiga kali seminggu. Desember sampai Maret dipotong sekali seminggu.
Keren! Makin tambah deh info tentang United!

Old Trafford, Taman Impian "Setan Merah"
KompasBola.com - 26/7/2009 | 01:46 WIB
http://www.kompas.com/data/photo/2009/07/26/0145482p.jpg
Sejak itu, Old Trafford bagaikan tempat peribadatan penting sepak bola Inggris. Meski kemudian muncul stadion-stadion bagus, termasuk Wembley, namun nilai historis dan gengsi Old Trafford tak pernah sirna.
Bagi Manchester United, Old Trafford bagaikan taman impian.
Butuh waktu nyaris 9 tahun untuk kembali menghidupkan kembali Old Trafford. Praktis, dalam delapan musim Liga Utama Inggris absen ddi Old Trafford.
Kapasitas stadion pun naik turun. Setelah kasus tragedi di Stadion Hillsborough, 1989, kapastias dikurangi menjadi 45.000, bahkan kemudian 43.000. Kapasitas tersedikit sepanjang sejarah Old Trafford.
Maka, penambahan kapasitas pun terus dilakukan.
Bahkan, Manchester United punya rencana besar.
(HPR)

The evolution of Old Trafford
manutd.com
25/03/2011 11:45, Report by Adam Marshall
On 25 March 1939, a crowd of 76,962 fans crammed into Old Trafford for an FA Cup semi-final between Wolves and Grimsby.
That attendance remains a record for the Reds' world-famous stadium, even though it's been gradually developed since the Second World War to become the magnificent arena it is today.
Bomb damage during the war forced Matt Busby's men to vacate Old Trafford and play at Manchester City's Maine Road ground. When United made the emotional return in 1949, standing was still the norm - only 3,000 seats were installed in time for the homecoming match against Bolton Wanderers.
A stated ambition in September 1957 to house 100,000 spectators was shelved as the Munich air disaster the following year refocused the directors' minds to saving the club.
In 1960, the capacity was increased to 66,500 following work on the Stretford End and the neighbouring paddock and, four years later, a cantilever stand on United Road was installed with 10,500 seats and the first private boxes in the country. With Old Trafford due to host World Cup games in 1966, the £350,000 investment was assisted by the government.
The Theatre of Dreams was really starting to take shape. Another cantilever stand with 5,000 new seats extended the Scoreboard End in 1971 and more executive boxes were opened in 1973.
The 1980s brought only minor changes although seats were installed in the Stretford End paddock in 1985 and the Family Stand was introduced.
Following the Taylor Report recommendations in the wake of the Hillsborough disaster, the Stretford
End was demolished in 1992 and replaced by the new £12million West Stand. Another major development came before Euro '96 when the giant North Stand took the capacity to over 56,000.
The dawn of the new Millennium saw a second tier added to the East and West Stands which increased the size of the ground even further - to circa 67,500 - and the North-West and North-East Quadrants took Old Trafford past the 76,000 mark in 2006.
Consequently, most of the Reds' record attendances since that 1939 cup fixture have been in the past five years or so. The biggest-ever Premier League crowd witnessed the 4-1 beating of Blackburn in 2007 - 76,098. Only 25 less fans saw the 3-1 triumph against Aston Villa earlier the same year.
United's record FA Cup (v Arsenal) and European (v Olympique Lyonnais) home attendances came in 2008 and even as recently as last year, the stadium was still hitting new heights as the thrilling semi-final second-leg success against Manchester City was in front of a record League Cup crowd of 74,576.
So while the stadium's attendance record, set 72 years ago today, is out of reach for the current capacity of 75,797, Old Trafford remains the biggest club ground in England and a stage fit for some of the best football in the world.

EVOLUSI OLD TRAFFORD
manutd.com
25/03/2011 11:45, Reporter : Adam Marshall
Theatre of Dreams benar-benar mulai tertata rapi.

artikel dari;
http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2007/aug/12/sport.obsmagspecial24
What's it like?
Walmart. Big, brash and passive aggressive. Great arena - but the old prawn prejudices still fit: no club venue is more Premier League™.
And the away end?
3,000 corner seats set back from the pitch. Unobstructed views - but you'll feel exposed every time your team concede: the United customers in the section to the left love to turn and goad. Good toilets, good stewards and excellent acoustics: a strong away crowd can make plenty of noise, and architecturally this is an impressive space. It's always an experience of sorts.
To eat
Football's Famous Chicken Balti Pie? No - but various other decent warm wet pie options - meat flavour.
Where to drink?
Avoid the local pubs - the Bishop Blaize McWetherspoon, the Sam Platts and The Trafford. Go into town, then get the Metrolink to the stadium. Or try Altrincham or Eccles - both good for pubs and parking, and also on the Metrolink.
Make a weekend of it
The best local attractions The Imperial War Museum North, designed by Daniel Libeskind, at The Quays, is only a mile from Old Trafford.
Best home fans' chant
'We are the Pride of all Europe, The Cock o' the North. We hate the Scousers, and Cockneys of course... And Leeds! We are United without any doubt, We are the Manchester boys, La la la la... Oooh!'
In local pub row, don't insult
Eric Cantona. Enduring hero for being the cock of the north.
Overall away trip rating: 6
Great looking, lots of history, but it's also branded and sterile. You won't come away buzzing. Unless, that is, you win there - then not only have you beaten the best team in Britain, you're also a working-class hero sticking it to the man.
