Milk Cup 2009: Reds reign again in the Coleraine rain

There was a distinct sense of deja vu in the air this evening as Paul McGuinness’ side took to the field for the Milk Cup final in exactly the same sort of atrocious Coleraine weather they experienced as they won the competition last season, and while there wasn’t quite the same dominant, swashbuckling performance that we witnessed 12 months ago, goals from Michael Ngoo and Etzaz Hussain ensured there was ultimately the same result – a Manchester United victory and more silverware for the Old Trafford trophy cabinet.
All the talk about opponents Sheffield United had been about how they hadn’t impressed in their semi-final penalty shootout win over FC Porto, but United weren’t about to take them lightly, the last three games between the two sides at academy level having all ended in draws. The absence of Joshua King (whose ankle injury had flared up in yesterday’s semi) and Ravel Morrison (who was serving a suspension) was another reason for caution – John Cofie and Michael Ngoo came in to replace that duo.
Anyone expecting a walkover for United will have been thinking again after an opening quarter of an hour that saw the Blades more than hold their own, although in truth both sides really struggled to assert themselves given the terrible conditions. Sheffield United had the wind at their backs in the first half and gave Sam Johnstone a couple of scares with shots from outside the box, but the England U17 keeper’s sound handling and judgement reassured his back four, and gradually the Reds started to string together the sort of passing football we know they’re capable of.
That said, when the breakthrough came after 17 minutes, it was a long pass that made the difference rather than the quick, short passing usually a hallmark of their play. Will Keane dropped deep and played a terrific long pass over the defence into the path of Ngoo, who initially failed to bring it under control. Robbie Brady was on hand to pick up the loose ball however, and when he cleverly picked out Ngoo with a precise cut-back, the big striker – on trial from Southend United – took a touch before coolly finishing with his left foot.
Confidence understandably surged through those in the red shirts, and 1-0 could easily have become 2-0 almost immediately, Will Keane first drawing a fine save from the Sheffield United keeper before then playing Ngoo in with a sublime dinked throughball that the triallist really should have done a lot better with. The Blades stuck to their task and refused to let United forget that they were in a real tussle now, but you always felt that it was going to take something special for them to turn this around.
While the lead was only 1-0 that was always a possibility of course, and as the game moved into the second half there was frustration on the Reds part that the scoreline remained that way, further chances coming and going, most notably a three-on-one breakaway where Ngoo managed to hit the only defender with his cross, with Cofie and Brady both unmarked in the area.
Nonetheless, that chance did seem to spark a period of concerted United pressure, Cofie and Brady both going close with efforts from the edge of the box, and you felt the second goal was only a matter of time. When it came, it was one from the top drawer, with Etzaz Hussain starting and finishing the move. The Norwegian midfielder picked up the ball forty yards out and found Tom Thorpe in space on the right flank. Thorpe in turn found Ngoo bursting into the box and the lanky forward produced a beautiful backheel into the path of Hussain’s run, leaving the 16 year-old with the relatively simple task of sidefooting the ball home past a wrong-footed goalkeeper.
While there was still 18 minutes remaining and there was always a chance something could happen, United letting a 2-0 lead slip from that point looked incredibly unlikely. The Blades had strung together some decent moves and worked extremely hard, but had only really threatened Johnstone’s goal with efforts from long range. The Reds lost a little bit of discipline late on (Brady and Tunnicliffe picking up bookings) and then conceded a scrappy goal from a set-piece to Kennedy in the first minute of injury time, setting up a nervy last couple of minutes, but there was to be no denying them a deserved victory, a second consecutive Premier section triumph and a fourth overall – both firsts.
As captain Brady underwent the Milk Cup ritual that sees the winning captain drenched in the aforementioned dairy product, his teammates celebrated after a terrific effort this past week, and Paul McGuinness spoke glowingly of his team, hailing their victory as a “great achievement” and picking out the second goal as an example of great football produced in entirely unhelpful conditions. As he also pointed out, many of this winning squad (including seven of the starting XI) will still be eligible next year, and three-in-a-row will now definitely be the target in 2010.

Manchester United U18s 4-1 Huddersfield Town U18s
Morrison 1, 29 (pen) - ???? 67
King 4, 42 (pen) - -
United’s U18s finished their pre-season campaign with a very comfortable 4-1 victory over Huddersfield Town at Carrington this morning.
Starting on a new pitch for the 2009/10 season, the club had installed three permanent stands which can accommodate approximately 120 supporters. While it was good to get a seat, it did nothing to prevent the weather from giving all the supporters a drenching as the rain was vertical at times.
The game kicked off in sensational fashion with Ravel Morrison giving United a lead in the first minute. Three minutes later Josh King made it 2-0 with a good finish from a right wing cross by Nick Ajose.
United were clearly on top and the Huddersfield defence was all over the place. Once again King’s pace and strength was causing all sorts of problems. He was brought down in the penalty area just before the half-hour mark and Morrison stepped up to place it past the keeper. Then three minutes before half-time, a foul on King again, this time for shirt pulling, led to another penalty. This time Josh took the spotkick, and although the keeper got a hand to the shot, it had too much power and ended in the net.
Half-time: Manchester United 4 Huddersfield Town 0
Hussain and Ngoo had already come on as subs in the first half, replacing the injured Robbie Brady and Will Keane respectively. Paul McGuinness took the opportunity to make one additional change at the break, McGinty coming on for Thorpe.
In the second half, Huddersfield came out much more determined, while we relaxed and weren’t as decisive on the ball or with our passing. In fact, quite a few players were trying things on their own, rather than playing a team game. Morrison in particular was very slack at times.
To be fair, the terrible conditions didn’t help and Huddersfield scored a deserved consolation goal half way through the second period, a reward for a more dogged approach.
We made quite a few substitutions in the last half an hour, and there were few other chances to talk about.
Josh King was easily the best player on the park, while Morrison showed neat touches on occasions. Both Will Keane and Robbie Brady were excellent in the first half an hour before going off with niggles.

Academy Preview - Manchester United
Posted on: Fri 21 Aug 2009
Saints' Under-18's are in action against Manchester United in their opening fixture of the F.A Premier Academy League 2009/10 campaign.
United are not in Saints' group, represent one of two long distance matches scheduled for the youth team. The game will take place at United's Carrington training ground, with a kick off of 11am.
It will be the first competitive match for many of the first year scholars at the Saints Academy as they make the step up to Under-18's level.
Like Southampton, the Red Devils have taken on a large new intake of first years that will be hoping to follow a number of players into the first team. At Old Trafford, the likes of Danny Welbeck, Jonny Evans and Darron Gibson have all broken through in recent years.
Academy manager Matt Crocker and Coach Dave Puckett will take the youngsters up to Manchester hoping to improve on last season's away form after collecting just seven of their 38 point total on the road in 2008-09 under Stewart Henderson.
"Dave Puckett and I have taken things on with the youth team because Stewart Henderson has been helping out Alan Pardew with the first team," Crocker explained.
"Everything has been geared up for the first game against Manchester United away and in terms of performances, some boys have done well and earned the opportunity to play which is great and we want to encourage that.
"Overall they've worked well. James Bunce, the fitness and conditioning coach has been working closely with Dave, so fitness levels are spot on in preparation for the start of the season."

United’s new-look Under-18 side were given a harsh lesson in the realities of academy league football this morning after dominating long spells of their opening day clash with Southampton and still conspiring to fall to a 3-1 defeat.
With Carrington bathed in sunshine, things looked bright for a team containing seven new scholars when they took an early lead through a superbly-crafted goal from Ryan Tunnicliffe, yet a disastrous start to the second half saw the pendulum swing firmly in the Saints’ direction, as costly defensive mistakes handed goals to Jordan Keegan and – from the penalty spot – Garyn Preen.
The Reds poured forward in search of an equaliser but the visitors’ defence held firm and Callum McNish produced the goal of the game on the counter attack to clinch all three points for the boys from the South Coast.

Spurs 1-3 United
Goals : Wotton (og, 48') (spurs); Cofie 3', Brady 11', King 28' (united)
United’s U18 side produced the perfect response to last week’s opening day defeat with an impressive dismantling of Tottenham at Spurs Lodge this morning. The damage was done in a scintillating first half-hour as the Reds raced into a 3-0 lead with goals from John Cofie, Robbie Brady and Joshua King, and while Spurs pulled a goal back early in the second half and made much more of a fight of it, United weathered the storm and ultimately ran out comfortable winners.
The loss of Sam Johnstone, Tom Thorpe, Ravel Morrison and Will Keane to England U17 duty ensured Paul McGuinness would have to make at least four changes to last week’s starting XI, but such is the strength in depth of the pool of players available to him this season, the Reds boss was able to bring in Conor Devlin, Sean McGinty, Etzaz Hussain and Joshua King as replacements and barely weaken the side (if at all). The other seven starters from last Saturday’s defeat to Southampton all retained their places, meaning still no sightings of new signings Paul Pogba or Alberto Massacci.
Spurs won their Academy Group at a canter last season and were runners-up to Arsenal in the national playoffs so this had all the makings of a tricky away trip, but some devastating counter-attacking play saw United seize control and a 2-0 lead with the game only just over ten minutes old. John Cofie opened the scoring with less than 150 seconds having elapsed, latching onto Hussain’s lofted through-ball and powering past Blackwood with almost embarrassing ease before driving the ball low and hard past Oscar Jansson in the Spurs goal – a goal that showed what Cofie is all about, pace and power in abundance and an eye for goal.

Robbie Brady - skipper continued his scoring form
The hosts were stunned and firmly on the backfoot as the Reds constantly surged forward in numbers and at electric pace, looking to press home their early advantage. They didn’t have to wait long to do so either, as yet another rapid break caused havoc in the Spurs defence. Nicky Ajose’s ball in from the right was miskicked by Ryan Tunnicliffe but fell for captain Robbie Brady at the far post, who lashed the ball past Jansson from a tight angle.
McGuinness’ team looked like they could score every time they went forward and Spurs had no real answer to the pacy United front four and the central midfield promptings of Tunnicliffe and Hussain, so it was no great surprise when the Reds went further ahead just before the half-hour mark. What looked like a fairly harmless clearance forward from Reece Brown was flicked on by Cofie, and King found himself in acres of space behind the Tottenham backline. Full of confidence after his terrific start to the season, the Norwegian nonchalantly skipped past Jansson before slotting into the vacant net. For wildly differing reasons neither side really looked like they could believe the scoreline.
Things could have got worse for Spurs before the half-time interval as Tunnicliffe guided a free header inches wide and other promising United moves didn’t quite come off. As it was, Alex Inglethorpe’s side finally offered some resistance – skipper Harry Kane’s long-range effort leaving Devlin helpless and cannoning off the bar – and made it to the break with only the three-goal deficit, and they emerged for the second half determined to do something about it.
Lapses of concentration before and after half-time have been an achilles heel of sorts for United in recent times, and despite having the first chance of the second 45 (Brady curling a 20-yard freekick straight at Jansson), the Reds’ rearguard was caught cold again shortly after the restart.

Josh King - continued to impress
Winger Paul McBride had been the Lilywhites’ most promising attacking outlet in the first half and he did the damage, cutting in from the right and eluding Zeki Fryers and Sean McGinty before firing the ball across goal. Devlin got a hand to it but in the ensuing goalmouth scramble, Scott Wootton appearing to knock the ball over his own goalline under pressure from Kudus Oyenuga.
As is so often the case, that goal completely changed the complexion of the game, at least for a short while. All of a sudden it was Spurs in the ascendancy, and while King in particular continued to pose a real threat on the break for United, the team’s focus was forced to shift to weathering the Tottenham storm. A shaky ten minute spell saw the Reds become panicky in possession and unable to prevent the home side building up a head of steam, but the back four of Brown, Wootton, McGinty and Fryers held firm, ably supported by a hard-working midfield.
Gradually United were able to take the sting out of the game and regain some momentum, and the last quarter of the game was played out with the boys in red very much back in control. Chances came and went for Brady, King and Ajose, but spurning them never looked likely to prove costly as Spurs players were left chasing shadows at times by some excellent possession football. Cofie and King, having run themselves into the ground, were replaced by Jesse Lingard and Larnell Cole as the Reds closed out the game, 3-1 a more than fair reflection of their superiority over the ninety minutes.
STAR MAN: Joshua King – several others made compelling cases (Tunnicliffe, Hussain, Brady) but the 17 year-old from Oslo once again showed why everyone has been talking about him these past few weeks. Tottenham’s defenders couldn’t handle his pace, strength and ability on the ball, and on another day he could have ended up with a hattrick. Did look punched out near the end however and his substitution highlighted one major area of Josh’s game that still needs work – his fitness.

United's Under-18s earned a 2-2 draw against Leeds on Saturday, after a late equaliser secured a point in a hard-fought game against Elland Road's youngsters.
Midfielder Ravel Morrison and defender Zeki Fryers were on the scoresheet for Paul McGuinness' young side.
Morrison had spurned a good early chance after a brilliant, intricate passing move from United. The Wythenshawe-born midfielder blazed over the bar from 18 yards, although the ball did appear to bobble before he struck it.
However, the 16-year-old was not so profligate with his next opportunity. John Cofie made a powerful surge through the heart of the Leeds midfield before slipping a pass to Morrison, who, from a much tighter angle, lashed his right-footed shot into the far corner.
In the second half there was another emphatic finish from a United midfielder, but unfortunately for Ryan Tunnicliffe, who was trying to clear a Leeds attack, he blasted the ball past Conor Devlin into his own net. Leeds continued to press forward in blustery conditions, and as the Reds failed to deal with a swirling cross to the far post, the home side found themselves in front.
United were trailing despite a good start, but a corner late on in the game gave the Reds a chance. With everyone forward, Zeki Fryers got his head to the ball and the Leeds defence couldn't prevent it crossing the line.
The result means the Reds have started the 2009/10 Academy Premier League campaign with a defeat, a draw and a victory so far. Next up is the visit of Huddersfield Town to Carrington on Saturday 12 September.

United survived a second-half fightback from Huddersfield, taking all three points after late goals from Ravel Morrison and Etzaz Hussain.
John Cofie's first half strike had Paul McGuinness' side ahead at half-time, but the visitors were a team transformed after the interval, and they deservedly levelled before the Reds' late flourish.
The hosts were comfortably on top in the early exchanges, and moved ahead as William Keane's shot was scrambled away on the goal-line, but only as far as Cofie, who hammered in from under a yard out.
Cofie fired off target with the clearest chance across the remainder of the opening half, as United called the tune, but the Reds' comfort was to prove misleading.
For much of the second half, however, Huddersfield were on top, and they levelled matters out of nothing, just before the hour mark. Goalkeeper Sam Johnstone's clearance was charged down and eventually ended up with Aiden Chippendale, who fired home a low effort.
Buoyed, Huddersfield applied further pressure as United sought to regain their composure. Morrison was only a yard off target with a 20 yard snapshot, while Hussain toe-poked an effort into the side netting from just inside the area.
The duo then combined to put United back in front. Hussain's long ball sprung the visitors' offside trap, giving Morrison time to take two touches and hammer in a powerful shot.
The sprightly playmaker then burst through eight minutes from the end and stabbed a ball across the six-yard box. In a three-way race to the loose ball, Hussain - who excelled in a defensive midfield role - beat Jesse Lingard and Terriers defender Lee Franks to slide in a finish.
Having seen his side fight back from a sapping setback to claim victory against a resurgent side who were hitherto unbeaten, McGuinness could reflect on a satisfactory morning's work at a sun-soaked Carrington.

Robbie Brady made it third time lucky in his quest to score from a set-piece as his brilliantly struck second-half free-kick handed United victory against Barnsley.
The young Irish forward had twice been denied by the crossbar in the first half.
In fact, Brady wasn't the only player to be foiled by the woodwork in the opening 45 minutes. Reds forward William Keane hit a post, as did Barnsley in a half that ended 0-0 but should have seen United take advantage of superior chances.
The Reds were not perturbed, neither was Brady as he continued to eye United's dead-ball duties. His third free-kick, from 25 yards out, proved more successful. The shot stayed low, and undetected, leaving the Barnsley goalkeeper rooted to the spot as the ball hit the back of the net.
That goal was all that separated the two teams, and the win was largely deserved on the balance of play. The slender winning margin could perhaps have been greater, but credit is due to a dogged Barnsley side.

U18s: Blackburn 0 United 0
United's U18s left Brockhall Village with a point after a 0-0 draw against Blackburn Rovers at lunchtime on Saturday.
Reds striker John Cofie went closest to finding the net when he hit the post on 23 minutes after a clever ball over the Rovers defence from Ravel Morrison. Morrison perhaps should have done better with the rebound – he sliced a volley over the bar from close range when it looked easier to score.
Earlier, William Keane had sent a header straight at the Blackburn goalkeeper, while at the other end Sam Johnstone in the United goal was relatively quiet. In fact, he was only called into action on 63 minutes, saving well down low from distance.
Nicky Ajose, still looking for his first goal of the season, tried his luck from 25 yards on 75 minutes and forced a fine save from the Blackburn stopper before Keane hit the side-netting from an acute angle shortly afterwards.
But try as they might, Paul McGuinness' men couldn't force a winner.

Second-placed United were dealt a surprise defeat by bottom-of-the-table Everton at Carrington.
Nathan Craig gave the visitors an early lead when he reacted quickest to a shot that rebounded off the post. After that disappointing start the Reds began to dominate possession, with winger Robbie Brady leading the charge for an equaliser.
However, Everton were stubborn and put plenty of men behind the ball to protect their lead. And the longer they kept United out the more they grew in confidence, with Reds keeper Conor Devlin forced into a good save before the break to keep the deficit at just one goal. Then after the break Devlin made another good save, while Brady hit the crossbar with a free-kick that swirled in the wind.
Recognising the need for change, Paul McGuinness made a triple substitution, replacing Scott Wootton, Jesse Lingard and John Cofie with Reece Brown, Ravel Morrison and Nicky Ajose. But United were dealt a major blow when Everton grabbed their second shortly after the change.
The Reds grabbed a goal back when Everton's keeper palmed home Ajose's corner, but in truth it was one of few occasions where Everton didn't use the windy conditions to their advantage. United will look to bounce back next Saturday against Crewe, a match which will be played at Gresty Road. Kick-off 11:00 BST, adults £2, concessions £1.

U18s: Crewe 2 United 1
United threw everything at Crewe Alexandra and dominated possession for much of the match, but still ended up losing 2-1 at Gresty Road.
The Railwaymen twice struck on the counter attack through forward Jason Oswell in the second half, before Will Keane pulled a goal back late on. But it wasn't enough.
Of some consolation was the eye-catching debut from 16-year-old French starlet Paul Pogba in midfield. After all the fuss around his move from Le Havre, it appears, even at this early stage, that he could be well worth it.
In the first half United played some great football, with Pogba spraying passes around from midfield and firing just wide from long-range.
Ravel Morrison also went close with a shot from 25 yards, but it just wouldn't dip under the crossbar.
Pogba continued to impress in the centre of the park. He is very strong on the ball and cultured in possession - comparisons with Patrick Vieira are inevitable.
With John Cofie and Robbie Brady on the bench, Paul McGuinness' young Reds just didn't have a cutting edge in attack. However, United started the second half with plenty of intent.
It was one-way traffic until Crewe struck on the counter attack to take the lead after 48 minutes through Oswell. Back to square one for United, who began again to pressure the home side. But Crewe once again struck against the run of play, with an overhead kick from Oswell.
Pogba rattled the crossbar with a thunderous free-kick with 20 minutes remaining, and Keane's header from Nicky Ajose's cross forced a good save from Daniel Platt in Crewe's goal, who was arguably their best player.
With a 2-0 lead to protect, the home team packed men behind the ball and United found it difficult to find a way through. That is, until the last few minutes of the match, when Keane got his first goal of the season - a calm finish from close range after a scramble in the box.
It sparked a late surge from the Reds, with Morrison twice going close. But Platt repelled everything, consigning United to a second consecutive defeat.

Will Keane struck a first-half hat-trick to give the Reds a sweet 3-0 victory in Manchester’s mini derby at Carrington.
The Under-18 striker’s clinical finishing in the opening 45 minutes proved the difference between the two teams, in a victory that means the Reds leapfrog Manchester neighbours City in the Academy Premier League.
United have lost six of the last eight meetings with City, runaway winners of the league’s North-West division last term. But going into this tie, the teams were level in fourth (City) and fifth (United) spots with 11 points apiece. A strong-looking Reds side included Joshua King, who's excelled at Reserves and first-team level this term, plus a second game for French starlet Paul Pogba and a debut for Italian right-back Alberto Massacci.
After Pogba's impressive debut during the 2-1 defeat to Crewe last weekend, he was clearly keen to continue where he left off. There were two minutes on the clock when his lovely turn and pass set Keane on his way. City's keeper came out and handled the ball outside the box, but Nicky Ajose's resulting free-kick came to nothing.
It was a really bright start from the Reds, which was rewarded in the fourth minute, again with Pogba pulling the strings. This time the French youngster was on the right flank, and his curling cross was met by Ryan Tunnicliffe. The United midfielder couldn't direct his shot goalwards, but nudged the knock-down into Keane's path and he finished calmly for the second weekend in a row from six yards.
United went close to a second goal when Ajose fed a pass to King, who did well to stay on his feet and round City’s keeper, before his shot from a tight angle was deflected into the side-netting.
City had a good chance after 26 minutes, but a minute later United had doubled the lead. Brady penetrated into City’s box on the left and his pass fell to Tunnicliffe, who slipped as he went to shoot. Fortunately, it landed at the feet of Keane, who was again in the right place to slide the ball into the net. By now firmly on a high, Keane got his third after 42 minutes when Brady bundled his way through on the left, cut the ball back and found Keane lurking. It was another classy and cool finish into the roof of the net from the Stockport-born striker.
The Reds could have gone 4-0 up within four minutes of the restart, as King went on a powerful run from the edge of United’s box into City’s area and backheeled a pass to Ajose. But the Reds winger couldn’t direct his shot. After that United had to defend a spell of City pressure as the visitors began to press, but the Reds’ rearguard stood firm.
It was a much scrappier second half than the first, with very few clear-cut chances for either side, although King’s power and pace were always a menace to the City defence. Neither side could add to the scoreline, however, and after City’s dominance in this fixture in recent years, this comprehensive victory is sweet revenge for the Reds.

United recovered from the loss of two early goals and the enforced substitution of Robbie Brady to claim a point away to Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Nicky Ajose levelled with just two minutes to spare at the Midlands club's training ground, where the young Reds had trailed for almost the entire match.
Wolves were quickly out of the traps on their own patch, taking the lead in the sixth minute through James Spray and doubling their advantage after ten when Nathan Rooney beat Conor Devlin in the United goal.
Devlin spared further damage when he prevented Rooney from scoring a penalty in the 25th minute after Nathaniel Mendez-Laing had been brought down. It proved to be a vital save by the 18 year-old Ulsterman, as it enabled Robbie Brady to reduce the deficit to 2-1 just four minutes later. Sadly Brady didn't stay on the pitch for much longer - he was stretchered off in the 38th minute and was replaced by Davide Petrucci.
Despite their efforts after the interval, United seemed to be heading for a third defeat in four games until Ajose popped up in the 88th minute to make it even-stevens at the end of an entertaining Academy League match.

Training camp in Malta
The United Academy team flew out to Malta after the 2-2 draw with Wolves on Saturday for a training camp.
The team expects to stay on the Mediterranean island for a week given that there is a blank fixture next weekend.
Apparently the Reds have lined up a friendly game with Hibernians of Malta on Thursday.
Hibernians have previous history with United as we played them in the opening round of the 1967/68 European Cup going on to lift the trophy.

United's Under-18s hit five past Bolton Wanderers on Saturday at Carrington - including a first goal for French starlet Paul Pogba and an impressive display from Italian Davide Petrucci on his first start since February.
It was all about United's four-goal display after the break, and although Bolton may feel hard done by at the scoreline, the Reds were just to good and clinical going forward, with Will Keane the master craftsman, scoring one and making two others.
It was entertaining stuff in the early stages with both teams playing positive football.
But after 28 minutes, and with United settled, forward John Cofie burst through the Wanderers defence. He was brought down as he rounded the keeper, but Will Keane was on hand to continue his fine recent scoring form, tapping in to make it 1-0.
Nicky Ajose was fortunate not to concede a penalty later in the half as the game became scrappy - it was a decision that infuriated Bolton, but nevertheless the half ended with United in front.
Cofie was replaced at half time by Morrison, and after the break United really began to press the visitors. The Reds substitute and Petrucci showed their creative talents on several occasions.
And it was Wythenshawe-born Morrison who got United's second. Keane's fine work in the build-up should be noted, leaving Morrison to apply a characteristically cool finish seven minutes after the restart.
Just over ten minutes later United grabbed a third. Ajose was the architect with some fine work on the left flank, pulling the ball back for Ryan Tunnicliffe to turn in a brilliant half-volley.
Petrucci, who recently returned from eight months on the sidelines, made way after 69 minutes and can feel pleased with his contribution.
But the change didn't stifle United's attacking intent. In fact his replacement, Larnell Cole, soon made it 4-0. Keane was again involved as he set Cole on his way before the young attacker calmly stroked the ball into the back of the net.
Bolton pulled a goal back, but when Reds left-back Zeki Fryers was clumsily brought down in the area, French midfielder Pogba wasn't going to pass up the opportunity to get his first U18s goal and complete a very satisfying afternoon's work for the young Reds.
United: Devlin; Massacci, Fornasier, Thorpe, Fryers; Petrucci (Cole 69), Tunnicliffe, Pogba, Ajose (McGinty 84); W.Keane, Cofie (Morrison 46).

LIVERPOOL 1
MANCHESTER UNITED 3
Keane 16, 75 Ajose 54
Will Keane continued his excellent record in front of goal to inspire a 3-1 victory for United over arch-rivals Liverpool.
The in-form Stockport-born striker scored twice and had a hand in United’s other goal from Nicky Ajose. He has now scored seven goals in his last four games.
The Reds were suffering from a host of absentees as Scott Wootton was out through suspension, while Ravel Morrison, John Cofie, Reece Brown, Robbie Brady, Alberto Massacci and Michele Fornasier were all missing from the starting line-up. Despite that, it didn’t seem to affect Paul McGuinness’ side as United took the lead after 16 minutes of a commanding display.
And this was the silky-skilled Keane at his finest. From Ajose’s left-wing cross, Keane’s first touch was delightfully delicate to bring the ball into his possession. Then, surrounded by Liverpool defenders, his neat footwork engineered some space before he curled his shot expertly into the far corner.
The Reds assumed control as the half wore on and Keane went close to a second with a header inside the six-yard box, while Davide Petrucci fired narrowly wide after good work on the edge of the area.
At the other end, Reds goalkeeper Conor Devlin saved brilliantly from Thomas Ince’s free-kick midway through the first half, and the same Liverpool player forced another fine low stop from Devlin just before the break.
Liverpool started the second half brightly with one or two attacking forays, but it was United who got the game’s next goal on 54
minutes. Good work from Paul Pogba in midfield and a nice turn and pass by Keane set Ajose on his way down the left channel. The livewire winger raced into the box and then lashed his left-footed shot into the top corner.
In the 75th minute Keane made sure of all three points for the dominant visitors. He capitalised on some slack defending from the home side before firing the ball left-footed through a defender’s legs and into the bottom corner.
The only blot on United’s copybook came in the dying stages when Adam Pepper’s free-kick made it’s way through a posse of bodies in the box and beat Devlin, denying the Reds a deserved clean sheet.
Nevertheless, it was a good victory to keep up the pressure on Premier Academy League Group C leaders Blackburn Rovers, and is good preparation ahead of the forthcoming FA Youth Cup third round tie against Birmingham City on Thursday 10 December.

U18s: United 2 West Brom 1
United brought 2009 to a close in the Premier Academy League with a 2-1 win over West Bromwich Albion at Carrington, as excellent strikes from Paul Pogba and Ryan Tunnicliffe secured all three points.
The victory is all the more pleasing considering the number of injuries Paul McGuinness has had to contend with in his squad.
However, it was good to see Michele Fornasier, John Cofie and Ravel Morrison all involved in the squad, particularly with the FA Youth Cup third round tie with Birmingham coming up on Thursday.
West Brom have a strong side this season so this final league match of the year was a tough prospect. But United made relatively light work of it early on, and the Reds were a goal in front after just five minutes following a wonder-strike from Paul Pogba.
The highly-rated French starlet, who has settled really quickly at United, picked the ball up 30 yards from goal, then steadied himself before arrowing in a superb shot into the far top corner. It's his second goal for the Under-18s, but his first in open play, and it was certainly one to savour.
The early goal was a great start for the Reds, but McGuinness' young charges soon extended the advantage after 24 minutes.
The shot was again struck from distance, this time from Pogba's central midfield partner Ryan Tunnicliffe. The combative Bury-born youngster picked his spot from 25 yards and drilled the ball into the bottom corner of the net with precision.
West Brom responded by threatening with several openings themselves, but United managed to keep the visitors at bay and took a 2-0 lead into the half-time break.
Will Keane, Scott Wootton and Tunnicliffe all went close for the Reds in a largely uneventful second half, but it was West Brom who grabbed the game's next goal in the last minute of normal time. It was probably what they deserved, but United ultimately ran out winners.
The victory continues a five-match unbeaten run which stretches back to the middle of October, and it bodes well ahead of Thursday's FA Youth Cup tie.
The match at Altrincham FC's Moss Lane ground kicks off at 19:00 GMT, and you can watch all the action live on MUTV. Or, if you're in the area, why not come down and cheer the young Reds on.
United: Devlin; Fornasier, Thorpe, Wootton, McGinty; Cole (Morrison 46), Pogba, Tunnicliffe, Ajose (Giverin 77); W.Keane, Cofie (Lingard 71).

United secured safe passage to the FA Youth Cup fourth round with a convincing 2-0 win over Birmingham City at Moss Lane.
First-half goals from Paul Pogba and Nicky Ajose put the Reds in the driving seat before Conor Devlin produced a superb penalty save to preserve the two-goal cushion.
City, who reached the semi-finals of the competition last season, enjoyed decent possession in both halves but lacked cutting-edge in the final third. They certainly could have taken notes from Pogba, who rose unmarked after just 57 seconds to head home Ajose’s wide free-kick and hand United a dream start. It was the Frenchman’s third goal for the Under-18s since his high-profile arrival from Le Havre and once again he proved his worth with a sparkling performance in the middle of the park.
Although rattled early, the visitors didn’t panic and carved out their first opening on nine minutes when James McPike blazed wide after good work from Jake Jervis on the left. Reds boss Paul McGuinness was then forced into an unplanned change after Tom Thorpe failed to recover from an early knock sustained in a committed tackle.
United’s defence, already somewhat makeshift, was reshuffled as Michele Fornasier moved into the heart of defence and substitute Alberto Massaci slotted in on the right. As the back four took time to settle, goalkeeper Conor Devlin was drawn into routine saves from Akwasi Asante and Jervis. Birmingham began to assert themselves on the match and it looked as though the visitors might snatch an equaliser.
But with almost half-an-hour gone, United broke quickly and a clever touch from Davide Petrucci found William Keane just outside the City penalty area. His first touch played in Ajose, who, steaming in from the right wing, took one touch before firing low across Birmingham goalkeeper Jack Butland and into the far corner.
Butland, an England Under-17 international, then produced fine saves from Ravel Morrison, Petrucci and Ajose to deny United a third before the break.
The young stopper was rapidly emerging as City’s star, but Reds goalkeeper Devlin eclipsed Butland’s heroics early in the second half with a fantastic save from the penalty spot. Pogba was adjudged to have brought down Jervis inside the area and the striker stepped forward himself to blast a shot towards the bottom corner. What he didn’t count on was Devlin flying full-length to his right to tip the ball around the post.
United survived a goalmouth scramble before left back Sean McGinty wasted a chance to put Paul McGuinness’ men further in front with a header from close range. Ravel Morrison let fly with two strikes from outside the box in quick succession but neither hit the target. William Keane fared a little better on 79 minutes when his first-time effort beat Butland. Unfortunately for the Stockport-born striker, the ball cannoned off the upright and out to safety.
With time running out, Birmingham City threw more men forward. But Devlin continued to frustrate the visitors, commanding his penalty area well and showing safe hands when dealing with a number of long-range efforts. United almost exploited the extra space left at the back but neither Petrucci nor Keane could extend the 2-0 scoreline.
The result earned United a spot in Friday’s FA Youth Cup fourth round draw

FAYC: Burnley 1 United 5
Paul McGuinness' under-18s produced a scintillating attacking display to crush Burnley and emphatically advance to the fifth round of the FA Youth Cup.
The Reds' youngsters delivered five wonderfully-taken goals and overran the hosts, who were reduced to 10 men in the second period and could find solace only in a late consolation goal after being completely outclassed.
Skipper Davide Petrucci opened the scoring, before braces for Josh King and William Keane took the Reds through to a fifth round tie at Blackburn or Leyton Orient in style.
United had been quietly in control of the opening exchanges before Petrucci struck on 22 minutes. A patient, probing nine-pass move culminated in King's shot being blocked, but the Italian was the first to react to the loose ball and he expertly sidefooted a low finish around a cluster of players and just inside the post.
The coolness of his finish was matched by King six minutes later. Larnell Cole profited from defensive hesitancy from the hosts by nicking the ball just outside the six yard box, before drifting to the byline and pulling the ball back to King on the corner of the area. Although Burnley were slow to apply pressure, the Norwegian's arced finish inside the far corner was nothing short of majestic.
United were, by now, totally dominant, and it was no surprise when a third goal arrived on 34 minutes - and once again it was a top class strike to admire. After Nicky Ajose had won the ball, it arrived back at him via Ryan Tunnicliffe and Larnell Cole, and he curled a gorgeous pass through for Keane, who lobbed home without breaking his stride.
The prolific striker could have doubled his tally a minute later as he raced in behind a static defence, but he dragged his left-footed finish just past the far post. Indeed, only a fine save from goalkeeper Danny MacDonald prevented Petrucci from adding a fourth before the interval as United ran riot.
It took only five minutes of the second period for United's fourth to come, however. King intercepted an errant pass, outstripped his marker for pace, cut inside another defender and, as the ball ricocheted up, lashed in a finish via slight deflection.
As the game lulled, with United in total comfort and Burnley spent of all but their pride, the hosts were dealt a further setback when Thomas Anderson was handed a second yellow card for illegally halting Keane's run on goal.
Substitute John Cofie, on for the injured King, soon joined the list of players thwarted by MacDonald when his powerful run was denied a near-post finish by the goalkeeper's strong hand. On 79 minutes, the Clarets goalkeeper was at it again; parrying Cofie's low shot and clutching Keane's improvised backheel from the ensuing scramble.
Both Cole and Tunnicliffe were narrowly off-target with low drives in the closing stages as United continued to press, but it was the hosts who struck next, on 84 minutes, when Joe McKee scrambled home an untidy goal after the Reds had failed to clear.
Fittingly, however,United had the final say four minutes later. The imperious Paul Pogba nicked possession and found Cofie, whose neat flick released Keane to bear down on goal and drill in an unerring left-footed finish: a fitting finalé in a swaggering, clinical performance from the Reds.

United's Under-18s staged an astonishing comeback to beat Stoke City 3-2 at Carrington, with two goals in the last nine minutes securing a satisfying victory.
The Reds were behind in the 13th minute and then slipped to a 2-0 deficit just after the break. But a superb turnaround in the quality of performance led to Nicky Ajose, John Cofie and Etzaz Hussain providing the goals for a spirited fightback.
Paul McGuinness was able to select Reece Brown, Zeki Fryers and Etzaz Hussain after lengthy spells on the sidelines. But the U18s coach clearly had one eye on Thursday's FA Youth Cup fifth round tie with Blackburn Rovers as he named key men Will Keane and Paul Pogba on the bench.
United started well but a collison between goalkeeper Sam Johnstone and defender Scott Wootton, which left the Reds stopper understandably shaken, seemed to knock the home side out of their stride. While there were no visible side effects to Johnstone's performance after a nasty fall, he was unable to keep out Andy Nichols' looping header on 13 minutes.
It was a scrappy half with the rhythm and attacking potency of United's recent display in the 5-1 FA Youth Cup win over Burnley sadly lacking. But the introduction of influential midfielder Pogba at half-time made a huge difference.
However, again despite a promising start, Stoke struck once more to dampen United spirits. A dangerous cross came in from the right and Brown headed into his own net.
It wasn't until after the hour mark that United's courageous comeback began. The breakthrough arrived when Ajose was fouled in the box, dusting himself down before coolly converting the kick.
United went close on several occasions but, heading into the last ten minutes, the young Reds were still desperately seeking an equaliser. Thankfully it arrived on 81 minutes. The impressive Ryan Tunnicliffe had a shot parried and England youth international Cofie tapped home from close range.
A draw looked like a good result under the circumstances, but United weren't finished there. Excellent wing play from Ajose created space inside the six-yard box for Norwegian midfielder Hussain to poke the ball into the net.
United's players were rightly ecstatic at the victory, and it is a huge confidence boost ahead of Thursday's Youth Cup tie with Rovers at Ewood Park.

With last month’s humbling FA Youth Cup exit at the hands of today’s visitors still fresh in the memory, United’s U18s were presented with a chance for revenge at Carrington this morning and took it in some style, ending a run of three games without a goal by putting six past a shellshocked Rovers side and seizing top spot in Academy League Group C.
The Reds were the more clinical side in a closely-contested first half, establishing a two goal lead thanks to Joshua King and Robbie Brady, before really cutting loose after the break with further goals from Larnell Cole, Paul Pogba, Etzaz Hussain and Will Keane, with Blackburn’s sole consolation coming from a late and dubious penalty converted by former United schoolboy Michael Potts.
- – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - -
With the last three games having ended in defeat, Reds boss Paul McGuinness was able to freshen the side up with the introductions of Tom Thorpe and Robbie Brady, both returning from lengthy injury lay-offs to make their first appearances in 2010. A relatively untried strike partnership of Joshua King and Nicky Ajose was chosen to spearhead the Reds attack, while Ryan Tunnicliffe continued his run of having started every competitive game this season at the heart of midfield.
The returning Brady made an instant impact, providing a presence on the left wing that the Reds have been sorely lacking in his absence and playing a pivotal role in his side establishing a 2-0 first half lead. First the young Irishman, sidelined since early November with a broken metatarsal, picked out King with a raking long pass down the left channel. The Norwegian still had plenty to do, but after losing one covering defender with a drop of the shoulder and burst of pace, he cut in from the left and beat goalkeeper Josh Swann from what seemed an almost impossible angle.
Soon after, Brady took centre-stage. Picking up the ball outside the area, the 18 year-old ran at right-back Ajagbe, feigning to cut inside before jinking outside and drawing the foul just inside the box. The referee didn’t hesitate to point to the spot, despite possibly justified complaints from the Blackburn players who felt Ajagbe had got a toe to the ball before felling the United winger. While the penalty award may have been dubious, there was no doubt whatsoever about the threat Brady was posing or the assured way in which he sent Swann the wrong way from the spot.
Blackburn more than played their part in a competitive half and had chances of their own, the most glaring falling to midfielder Micah Evans, who forced a fine low save from Conor Devlin in the United goal. Jason Banton, a thorn in the side in that fateful Youth Cup clash and one of the Academy League’s top scorers this season, was also causing real problems cutting inside from his left wing station. That threat from the visitors continued to cause alarm right from the start of the second 45, Banton going agonisingly close to pulling a goal back within seconds of the restart with a low shot against the post, having scythed through the heart of the United defence with a scintillating run.
United gradually weathered the Rovers storm however, with half-time substitute Paul Pogba – on for the injured Ryan Tunnicliffe, who was later seen on crutches – increasingly influential. The Reds seemed to have drawn the visitors’ sting, and swiftly set about avenging the Ewood Park debacle and filling their goal-starved boots. The killer third goal was all about King, his pace, power and persistence carrying him from wide on the left to the right-hand side of the penalty box without ever really having the ball fully under his control. A Blackburn defender finally nudged the ball away from the rampaging United forward but could only look on aghast as it rolled towards the penalty spot and into the path of the completely unmarked Larnell Cole, who couldn’t miss.
The next goal didn’t take long in coming, and it was a bizarre one. Pogba picked the ball up 25 yards out and let fly as we all know he can, his fierce shot drawing a fine save from Swann… or so it seemed. The Rovers’ stopper got a firm hand to the French youngster’s piledriver, but as it looped high into the air off his glove, Swann completely lost track of the ball’s flight and could only watch in despair as it landed and spun back over the goalline. Unfortunate for the visitors perhaps, but such was United’s dominance at the time that it was hard to have too much sympathy.
Chances came and went to add to the lead, King displaying his full range of attributes in getting himself into some great positions but also showing a little naivety and a slight lack of awareness in going for goal from unlikely angles with teammates better places. There could be no faulting his awareness and effort for the fifth goal however, his pace and willingness to chase a lost cause catching the Rovers’ defence cold. King kept the ball in play wide on the left and cleverly played in Jesse Lingard (on as sub for Brady), who had burst into the box untracked. Lingard got his head up and picked out Etzaz Hussain lurking in the six-yard box, and one nimble turn and one toe-poked finish later, the Reds had a fantastic five.
As if that wasn’t enough punishment for Blackburn, McGuinness then decided to introduce top scorer Will Keane from the bench in place of Ajose. The change almost brought instant reward as well, the predatory Keane drawing a fine save from Swann with his first touch, and there was a certain inevitability about the 17 year-old getting in on the act and reaching double figures for the season. He had to wait while Rovers notched their consolation from the spot – Potts converting with ease after earning something of a joke of a penalty when tumbling under the challenge of Devlin, who had clearly won the ball first – but he wasn’t to be denied for long, and he duly completed the scoring with a simple far post tap-in from Hussain’s low centre, King again playing a key role in the build-up.
6-1 was perhaps a little harsh on a very strong Blackburn outfit, but some of the attacking play from the hosts was sensational at times and King in particular was borderline unplayable. The victory sees United leapfrog Rovers at the top of Group C and sets McGuinness’ side up nicely for a tough trip to face third-placed Everton next weekened. The Toffees also climbed ahead of Blackburn with a win of their own today and have a game in hand on the Reds, so a positive result on Merseyside is very much needed if the Reds have aspirations of topping the table at the end of the campaign. In their favour may be the fact that Everton face, funnily enough, Blackburn in a Youth Cup quarter-final just 48 hours later than the scheduled league fixture, and as such may not be at full-strength.
STAR MAN: Joshua King – Blackburn simply couldn’t handle his pace, power and ability on the ball. the young Norwegian is far too good for this level and it showed.

William Keane fired a late equaliser to earn a point for United's Under-18s in an entertaining 2-2 draw with Crewe at Carrington.
Keane netted his 11th goal in 18 games seven minutes from time with an inch-perfect first-time shot into the roof of the net after being found by substitute Joshua King.
United had earlier taken the lead through Nick Ajose after just four minutes. The 18-year-old made a fine run down the left before cutting inside and rolling a lovely effort into the far corner.
Crewe drew level on 17 minutes through Michael Koral, but United and Sam Johnstone in particular will be hugely disappointed by the manner in which the goal was conceded. As a Crewe corner came in from the left, Johnstone opted to punch clear but the ball merely spun off his fist into the path of Koral who hooked it in from two yards.
Things got worse for Paul McGuinness' men just after the hour when Jason Oswell headed his third goal of the season against United having already struck twice in Crewe's 2-1 win at Gresty Road back in October. Koral did well to keep possession in the build-up before finding substitute Sean Cooke on the left and he stood a cross up for Oswell who rose highest to put Crewe ahead.
Thankfully, the Reds struck back in the 83rd minute as Keane ensured it finished honours even with a pin-point finish.

Paul Pogba earned United a point with a glancing first-half header against Newcastle, although it could have been all three points for the Reds had Joshua King not been denied by the woodwork.
Most of the action came in an entertaining first half, despite the blustery conditions at Carrington.
Powerful front pair King and John Cofie caused plenty of early problems for the visitors' defence, but it was Newcastle who took the lead on 11 minutes.
Despite the setback United continued to play some good, attacking football, and Paul McGuinness' youngsters didn't have to wait long for an equaliser.
From a free on the right side of the penalty area 25 yards from goal, Nick Ajose clipped in a precision cross and French teenager Pogba deftly directed his header in at the near post. It was nothing more than United deserved.
Norwegian front man King very nearly put United in front later in the half. Ajose sent his team-mate racing through on goal with a lofted pass into the left channel. King might have opted to cross the ball but instead lashed a shot goalwards, only to see it rattle off the crossbar.
Neither side could add to the scoreline in the second half, but United may rue that after Everton took the opportunity to move above the Reds in the Academy Premier League Group C table.
The Toffees, on 33 points, lead second-placed United by a point, while Blackburn Rovers and Wolverhampton Wanderers keep up the chase in third and fourth on 30 points. In fact, the entire league has become extremely closely contested, with only six points separating leaders Everton and second-from-bottom Crewe Alexandra.
U18s: Wednesday 0 United 0 – Reds held scoreless in Sheffield
STAR MAN: Sam Johnstone – Not a great deal of competition, with only schoolboys Barmby and Blackett otherwise catching the eye, but the England U17 keeper bounced back from a calamitous mistake on his last outing to put in a solid display, dealing with everything thrown at him aerially, showing impressive distribution and pulling off one terrific stop late on.

Reds to defend the Memorial Claudio Sassi, but won’t play in the Blue Stars

United’s U18s will return to northern Italy early next month to defend the Torneo di Calcio Memorial Claudio Sassi, but the club won’t be taking part in the annual FIFA Blue Stars Youth Cup in Switzerland this May.
The Memorial Claudio Sassi is held in the Northern Italian province of Modena and was originally established in 1991 as the Torneo Internazionale di Calcio Giovanile Enzo Ferrari, in honour of the legendary racing driver and founder of Ferrari, who hailed from the city of Modena. When the Ferrari family decided to withdraw permission to name the tournament after the late Enzo in 1998, the tournament was renamed as a tribute to local entrepeneur Claudio Sassi, who had passed away the previous year. Sassi was heavily involved in football throughout his life, both as a promising player in his youth and as president of U.S. Sassuolo, one of the tournament’s host sides (the other being Modena F.C.).
Now in it’s twentieth year, the tournament spans four days (this year between the 2nd and 5th of April) and features 72 teams playing across five age groups – Under 10, Under 12, Under 14, Under 16 and Under 18. Nearly 1300 players will participate in 114 games held in 25 venues throughout the province of Modena, with the opening three days featuring group games and semi-finals and the last day featuring all five finals. The blue-riband Under 18 competition regular features some of the biggest names from Italy and across Europe, with last year’s final – when United pipped Dutch giants Ajax to the title thanks to a last minute goal from Ryan Tunnicliffe – providing a handy example.

The Reds will compete in the U18 category again this season, with presumably both Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Paul McGuinness sharing managerial responsibilities, if last year is anything to go on anyway. They will be able to name a squad of 18, for which players must be at least 16 years old AND born after the 1st January 1991 to be eligible to play – although teams are allowed to include three ‘over-age’ players born in 1989 or 1990. Each game is 70 minutes long, with 35 minute halves and a ten minute interval. Coaches are allowed to use all seven available substitutes in matches, which offers a great opportunity to involve the whole squad in the proceedings and get all 18 players some match practice and tournament experience.
Eight teams will compete for the U18 title, initially divided into two groups of four. The top two in each group proceed to the semi-finals, with the winners of those matches obviously meeting in the final. United have been drawn in Group B, alongside Danish side OB Odense, co-hosts Modena and local outfit Virtus Castelfranco, while Group A features Serie A superpower Juventus, along with fellow top tier side Bologna, other co-hosts Sassuolo and Swiss representation from FC Chiasso.
United’s group schedule looks like this:
vs OB Odense (2/4/10, 20:45) at Ferrari G., Fiorano
vs U.S. Sassuolo (3/4/10, 16:45) at Ricci, Sassuolo
vs Virtus Castelfranco (4/4/10, 10:45) at Ferrarini, Castelfranco
If the Reds finish in the top two and progress to the semi-finals, they will play again at 17:30 on the 4th – either at the Ricci in Sassuolo if they win the group or back at the Ferrarini in Castelfranco if they finish second. Should we reach the final, that will be held at 17:30 on the 5th at the Dino Ferrari in Maranello.
------------------------
On the flip side, United won’t this year be competing at the FIFA Blue Stars Youth Cup this May. The Reds have participated in the event for five of the last six years (2007 being the exception) but won’t be returning to Switzerland for the 2010 tournament. The lineup for this year’s competition features Boca Juniors, Kaizer Chiefs, Mallorca, FC Basel, Grasshoppers, Celtic, Borussia Dortmund, Club America, FC Zurich and hosts FC Blue Stars.
A couple of other pieces of tournament-related news: unsurprisingly, United are confirmed entrants for the 2010 Northern Ireland Milk Cup, which this year sees the finals move from Coleraine to Ballymena. Meanwhile, the club’s U12s will later this month be competing at the Mediterranean International Cup in Barcelona.

Nicky Ajose scored twice in the last eight minutes at Carrington as United overcame a difficult test against Sunderland.
In a wind-affected game of few chances, the strong visitors looked the more likely victors based on possession but they were punished in the latter stages as Paul McGuinness' boys claimed maximum points for the first time in four games.
Cameron Stewart and Jesse Lingard carried the main threat to Sunderland in the first half, although the pair arguably got in each other's way when, at the end of a jinking run by the former, the latter lifted a shot above the bar from the edge of the area. Stewart went closer to breaking the deadlock when his best effort was deflected high and wide.
The same duo would eventually combine to create United's 82nd-minute opener. Stewart rolled a pass into the box from the left flank, Lingard collected and looked up to find Ajose who rifled in a first-time shot.
Ajose's second came two minutes from time when he picked himself up from a foul inside the area and slotted home from the penalty spot.
United: Devlin; Moffatt, Fornasier, Thorpe, Fryers; Brown, Wootton, Cole, Ajose; Stewart, Lingard. Subs: Jacob, Barmby, Blackett, Keane.

Reds remake the Italian Job as Cofie clinches the Claudio Sassi
Posted by nickogs20 on April 6, 2010
A solitary second-half goal handing United a 1-0 win in the final of the Torneo di Calcio Memorial Claudio Sassi… hmm, where have we heard that before? Ok, Bologna were the opposition this time around and it was John Cofie rather than Ryan Tunnicliffe with the decisive strike, but there was a definite sense of deja vu in Maranello yesterday as the Reds retained the Memorial Sassi.
Bologna proved stubborn opponents in the final, the game being played mostly in the half of the rossoblù but genuine chances proving hard to come by for the reigning champions. Indeed, the best opportunity of the first half probably fell to Bologna, with striker Polini firing over when well placed. The vital breakthrough did eventually come for United fifteen minutes into the second-half however, Cofie rising highest to head home Paul Pogba’s right-wing cross. Conor Devlin was called upon to make a vital late intervention, but the Reds held on to win the final and the 20th Memorial Sassi tournament, a deserved second consecutive triumph in the peninsula for Paul McGuinness’ side.
The Reds got their title defence off to a slow start, slipping to a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Danish side OB Odense in their opening match on Friday evening, but soon got things back on track with resounding wins over co-host side Modena and local amateur side Virtus Castelfranco by four and five goals to nil respectively, securing second place in their group behind the unbeaten Danes. The other co-hosts U.S. Sassuolo were United’s semi-final opponents on Sunday evening, and just as they had in last year’s group stage, the Reds ran out 2-1 winners, securing their place in the final against the Odense-conquering Bologna.
McGuinness fielded a starting XI of Devlin, Reece Brown, Joe Dudgeon, Tom Thorpe, Scott Wootton, Pogba, Etzaz Hussain, Oliver Norwood, Cameron Stewart, Will Keane and Cofie in the final, six of whom ultimately picked up their second Memorial Sassi winners’ medals. One of those, Wootton, received the trophy from a presentation party that included the Italian international forward Luca Toni, and United added more silverware to the Old Trafford trophy cabinet, following up their defence of the Northern Ireland Milk Cup last July.
Unfortunately the official tournament site has been a little scarce with details on lineups and scorers for the Reds’ other games. We’ll try to fill in some of those gaps over the next few days, but keep an eye out for an MUTV review of the tournament at some point over the next couple of weeks, which should help to put some flesh on the bones for stats fans.

U18s: United 1 Wolves 0 – Cofie sends Reds clear at the top
Early goals seem to have been the order of the day for United at all levels this past week and the U18s weren’t to be left out, John Cofie’s 2nd minute strike ultimately proving decisive as the Reds beat Wolverhampton Wanderers at Carrington.
When Cofie raced clear and coolly slotted the ball past Wolves keeper Aaron McCarey with just 64 seconds on the clock it looked like an exciting and potentially goal-laden game may be in store, but that never quite materialised. A weary-looking United, coming off five games in Italy at the Memorial Sassi tournament last week, struggled to find any sort of rhythm going forward, while a fresher Wolves outfit arguably shaded possession and territory but were frustrated by a resilient Reds rearguard. Much to the visitors’ chagrin, Paul McGuinness’ side held on to record a hard-earned 1-0 win and seize top spot in Academy League Group C.

United's Under-18s went top of Premier Academy League Group C with a 1-0 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday.
Top spot in the North west regional division has changed hands on numerous occasions in the last two months, but Reds striker John Cofie's second-minute goal was enough to defeat Wolves and reclaim pole position. Cofie got United off to a flying start when he ran through on goal before beating Wolves goalkeeper Aaron McCarey after just 64 seconds.
The Reds were just back from the recent triumph in Italy in the the Torneo Calcio Memorial Claudio Sassi-Sassuolo in Italy. Such a rapid start suggested confidence was high, but perhaps that tournament had taken just as much out of the legs as it had bouyed belief.
Wolves had plenty of possession but McGuinness' charges held on for three valuable points. With five games remaining, the Reds will hope to hold onto top spot for a place in the end-of-season play-offs against the winners of the other regional divisions.

United's youngsters recovered from an early setback on Teeside to claim three points with a resounding 4-1 win over Middlesbrough.
The Reds trailed after just seven minutes as Cameron Park fired home a stunning strike via the inside of the post. Nick Ajose quickly hauled United level, keeping his cool to finish after finding himself one-on-one with the goalkeeper.
United completed a telling turnaround in quickfire spell either side of the interval. On the stroke of half-time, Tom Thorpe tapped in from close range from a corner, and five minutes after the break Ravel Morrison fired home to double the Reds' lead.
Amid trying, windy conditions, United blew the hosts away as Ajose fired in a sharp, near-post finish just five minutes later to finish the scoring.
It was plain sailing for the Reds thereon, and Paul McGuinness and his players can reflect on a job well done, as well as three more priceless points as United look to hold off the challenge of Everton and West Bromwich Albion at the top of the table.

U18s: United 3 Derby 1 – Reds rock Rams with first-half fireworks
Morrison 10 - Ball 81
King 19, 44
United’s U18s extended their unbeaten run to nine league games and recorded a fifth straight win with a thoroughly convincing win over Derby County at Carrington.
Seeking to maintain their six point lead at the top of Academy League Group C and maintain their push for silverware, the Reds tore into the Rams right from kick-off and practically had the points in the bag before twenty minutes were on the clock, terrific goals from Ravel Morrison and Joshua King leaving the struggling visitors with a huge task on their hands. When King added his second and Reds’ third goal just before the break the win was secure, and the only blots on the United copybook were a late Derby consolation goal from Callum Ball and a needless red card for Paul Pogba, who will now have an anxious wait to see how many of United’s remaining games he will be forced to sit out.

There's just something about late winners against Manchester City this season, and it's not confined to the first-team after United's Under-18s came from 2-0 down to beat the Blues 3-2 on Tuesday.
It could be a vital three points in the race for the Premier Academy League Group C title.
Ahmad Benali and Harry Bunn gave City a first-half lead after United twice failed to deal with set-pieces for the home side.
Joshua King was denied penalty kicks either side of the half-time break. But it was the Reds' spirit and determination to get something out of the game in the second half – and the team's attacking strength – that shone through.
Paul Pogba hauled United back into the contest with a fine goal on the hour mark, then, with striker John Cofie on as a substitute for defender Sean McGinty, the Reds went for it. Within two minutes of the change on 73 minutes, King had fired in United's second – a spectacular shot in off the crossbar.
Then, with 90 minutes on the clock, King rose highest to head home Nicky Ajose's cross from the left to clinch a dramatic victory.

The Reds required three points to guarantee clinching the Premier Academy League Group C title, but were held to a 1-1 draw by a stubborn and physical Bolton Wanderers side.
Everton's 2-1 win over Crewe Alexandra means the title will be decided in United's favour on Tuesday with a win or a draw against the Toffees in the Reds' last game of the season. If Everton win that game and their other game in-hand then they will take the title.
It was a scrappy start to the game at Bolton, with Bolton's feisty opening 10 minutes not allowing United to settle. The knowledge that the title was on the line perhaps led to a nervy start from the Reds, but Bolton's tenacity and physical approach is always likely to be a jolt to the system at 11 o'clock on a Saturday morning.
The home side's tenacity was rewarded in the 11th minute when Michael O'Halloran volleyed in at the far post to put the home side in front. United needed to match Bolton's agression, and the Reds slowly began to do that, combining steel with style.
The breakthrough arrived on 19 minutes when King cut the ball back and Keane blocked an attempted clearance inside the six-yard box, thankfully seeing the ball deflect into the goal. It was probably the classy Keane's ugliest strike of the season, but one which contests like this sometime require.
Bolton were twice let off as United finished the first-half the stronger of the two teams; first, goalkeeper Jay Lynch fumbled the ball and then hauled down King, but his blushes were saved by an offside flag against United's Norwegian forward. Then, from Sean McGinty's cross with five minutes of the half left, King headed wide with the goal at his mercy.
After the break King was again the major goal threat. He has an eye for the spectacular and his curling effort from just inside the area rattled the crossbar on 56 minutes. Then, five minutes later from Ajose’s pinpoint cross, King was denied an excellent headed effort by an equally impressive Lynch stop.
Bolton still made a contest of it, providing their own attacking threat, but it was United creating the better of the scoring opportunities. Robbie Brady replaced Ajose as the Reds pushed for a winner. However, Bolton piled men behind the ball and were proving stubborn to break down.
John Cofie came on with three minutes remaining as the Reds really pushed for a crucial winning goal, but Bolton did enough to earn a point. The title has to wait for now, with the decisive away trip to Everton on Tuesday.
United: Johnstone; Brown, Fornasier, Thorpe, McGinty (Fryers 46); Ajose (Brady 74), Tunniclife, Pogba (Cofie 88), Morrison; King, Keane.

Tambahan :
Untuk U18 group A juaranya U18 Arsenal (hampir pasti)
Untuk U18 group B juaranya U18 Leicester City
Untuk U18 group D juaranya U18 Nottingham Forrest (hampir pasti)
akhirnya juara grup dan masuk semifinal utk ketemu arsenal.......:devil3:

U18s: Everton 0 United 2
Will Keane and Ravel Morrison were on target for United's Under-18s as the young Reds clinched the Premier Academy League Group C title with a decisive win away to fellow hopefuls Everton.
Paul McGuinness' side needed just a point in United's final game of the season, while Everton had to beat United and Manchester City in their remaining two games. But it was Keane, Morrison and co. who came out on top.
Keane put United in front after 26 minutes in the first half, before Morrison added a second goal in the 89th minute to wrap up all three points.
The win secures a place in the play-offs with the three other regional division winners to determine the destination of the overall Premier Academy League trophy.
The Reds have been drawn in a home semi-final tie against Arsenal, winners of Group A, for a chance to reach the final to decide the Premier Academy League winner outright.
United: Devlin; Brown, Thorpe, Wootton, Fryers; Ajose, Tunnicliffe, Morrison, Brady (Cole 84); Keane, King (Cofie 90).

U18s set for Gunners battle
Paul McGuinness has urged his Under-18s players to grasp one of the last chances to impress Sir Alex Ferguson this season by shining on the big stage against Arsenal in Friday’s Premier Academy League play-off semi-final.
The young Reds clinched the Premier Academy League Group C title (the Academy top-flight is split into four regional divisions), and earned a place in the play-offs with the other three group winners: Arsenal, Nottingham Forest and Leicester City. United face Arsenal at Carrington on Friday (kick-off 11:00 BST), and McGuinness is hopeful his in-form side can book a place in the final, which decides the overall Premier Academy League champions, at Old Trafford next week.
“We beat Everton 2-0 to win the league,” McGuinness told MUTV. “It was a good display, Will Keane and Ravel Morrison getting the goals, and our goalkeeper Conor Devlin making three fantastic saves. But we’ve not celebrated just yet because we have a big game against Arsenal.”
The Reds have been in fantastic form since February to clinch top spot in Group C, going on a 12-game unbeaten run that yielded 28 points from a possible 36. Those results have been built on good attacking football, plenty of guts and determination and steady nerves in critical situations. McGuinness says doing it in the very big games is the best way to catch Sir Alex’s eye.
“These games are vital,” he added. “We’ve been on a good run and we won a big game against Everton on Tuesday to clinch Group C. But I mentioned a few players to the manager after the Youth Cup, and he said, ‘Come and see me when they’ve done it in a big game’. Now we’ve got another big game against Arsenal, and hopefully another one after that. So the boys have to prove themselves in these big games.”

FA Premier Academy League
Play-Off Semi-Final
Carrington, Fri 7 May 2010
MANCHESTER UNITED (Cofie 111) 1 - 1 ARSENAL (Ozyakup 98)
Arsenal win 5-4 on penalties.
There was heartbreak for United's U18 on Friday as the young Reds lost the Academy play-off semi-final on penalties to Group A winners Arsenal.
Ryan Tunnicliffe was the only player to miss from 12 yards after a game that, ironically, had been littered with spurned opportunities. Indeed, despite both teams creating a raft of chances – Arsenal in the first half, United in the second – the game went to extra time after a goalless 90 minutes.
Then, both Arsenal and United substitutes scored with their first touches. Arsenal's Oguzhan Ozyakup put the visitors ahead on 98 minutes when he capitalised on confusion in the Reds' defence, before John Cofie raced clear in the second period and slotted in off the post to force penalty kicks.
United ended the match on top but it was Arsenal who settled earliest and bossed large periods of the first half. As early as the fifth minute, Chuks Aneke found space inside the area and drilled a low shot goalwards, only to find Reds goalkeeper Conor Devlin equal to the test.
Reds forward Joshua King spurned a header after good work from Nicky Ajose down the right flank, but not before the visitors had threatened twice more through Benik Atobe. At times it seemed Devlin's goal was leading a charmed life, particularly when Luke Freeman's shot clipped the base of the post shortly before half-time. The same player had earlier seen a long-range effort fly inches wide, with Devlin well beaten.
Although the Reds' back four were dogged in their defending, they often found the ball returning to them as quickly as they could clear. United's midfielders found life difficult against a Gunners engine room that was as beefy as it was talented. Physical prowess counts for a lot at this age, and United gave away both height and bulk to their southern opponents.
Despite Arsenal's dominance in the opening 45 minutes, Paul McGuinness's men went into the break on level terms. And it was a different United that emerged for the second half.
By the 57th minute, the Reds had crafted three golden chances. William Keane was thwarted by a brave last-ditch block by Ignasi Miquel before Reece Brown blasted high and wide despite finding himself with both time and space at the back post. Then King sprung the offside trap to race clear – he beat one man but found Gunners goalkeeper James Shea in fine form.
United's change of fortunes stemmed largely from a tactical switch at the break. Nicky Ajose and Robbie Brady switched flanks, with Ajose relishing the extra space he found on the left. Brady appeared to be carrying a knock, however, and was soon replaced by French midfielder Paul Pogba.
Despite United's resurgence, the score remained 0-0. And the Reds were almost made to pay for their profligacy in front of goal when Luke Freeman drew a top reaction save from Devlin. That led to a short spell of Arsenal pressure, although it was United who next came close via Ravel Morrison.
The young playmaker burst forward from midfield and, with Arsenal's defenders backing off, unleashed a shot from 22 yards. It looked destined to arrow into the top corner, only for Shea to leap athletically across his goal and tip the ball over for a corner.
Gunners winger Freeman looked the visitors' liveliest asset and was again denied a goal – this time by a brave block from Tom Thorpe – as the match edged towards extra time. Not that it fizzled out until 90 minutes.
Keane had an opportunity to win the game late on from close range but made a mess of his volley, only to see Arsenal race clear and almost score in the next phase of play. He was thankful to Thorpe for sparing his blushes with a perfectly-timed sliding tackle. King then had a header well saved by Shea in the Arsenal goal and Ryan Tunnicliffe volleyed over in injury time.
United should have taken the lead five minutes into extra time but Keane again miscued his shot, this time after good work by Ajose in the penalty area. The Reds paid the price shortly afterwards when substitute Oguzhan Ozyakup, on the pitch barely a minute, fired home a loose ball after a high cross from the right had caused confusion in the United defence.
McGuinness's men never gave up, though, and King's header drew another good stop from Shea. The luckless Keane was then replaced by John Cofie, whose impact was as instant as Ozyakup's. Sent over the top by a clever Morrison pass, Cofie raced clear and held off his marker to finish coolly off the inside of the post.
United: Devlin; Brown, Thorpe, Wootton, Fryers; Ajose, Morrison, Tunnicliffe, Brady (Pogba 52); King, Keane (Cofie 110)
Arsenal: Shea; Yennaris, Boateng, Miquel, Evina; Frimpong, Aneke, Henderson, Deacon (Ozyakup, 98); Afobe, Freeman

Auxerre wins Marveld Tournament 2010
French team wins twice in a row
For the second time in a row French Auxerre managed to win the prestigious Marveld Tournament under 15. They ended their group phase winning leavind Danish Bröndby on the second spot. The two met each other Sunday morning in the final group match which ended undecided 0-0. In the Finale match Auxerre made the decision by scoring the 1-0 in the first half. This was also the edn result when referee Luinge whistled the end signal.
Auxerre also won the Fairplay cup. Their behaviour as well on the fields as in the canteen and the entire complex was outstanding.
Best player and best goal keeper
Various scouts looked out on the soccer fields of Groenlo te search for the best soccer player and the best goalkeeper of the tournament. They unanimously selected Ajax number ten, Tobias Christiaansen as the best player of 2010. Tobias was always available to receive the ball. When he didn’t had a ball he was always searching the free space, he runs quickly, always looking for the combination and he coaches his teammates well. This makes him a complete soccer player.
The appointment of the best tournament goalie was more difficult. There were several formidable guys in the various goals this weekend. In the end the scout team the chose PSV keeper Zeus de la Paz. According to the jury Zeus has charisma, he gives the proper instructions to his teammates and he exudes confidence.
Most Valuable Player and Incentive prize
Most Valuable Player 2010 (sv Grol) became Jorn Reijerink. Jorn is steady as a rock, dominates in the air, is a die-hard with a special sense of humour and has a great mentality.
The incentive prize this year goes to Stan van Lent. Stan has played a good tournament and as a C1 player he is already one of the best of the Grol selection. He has excellent kicking techniques, was always first in the battle and has run lots of meters in recent days. With his good attitude, he is an example for the group.
Manchester United happy with third position
For the eighth time the youth team from Manchester United came to Groenlo. Their highest position until now was the sixth. So they were therefore hugely delighted when they won their group phase on Sunday morning. In the semi-finals they stumbled upon the Danish Bröndby which was too strong for them. However in the consolation finals they managed to beat Ajax, the team from whom they had lost in the groupmatch. Manchester United was delighted to reach the third position. Ajax took the fourth spot in the final standings.
Anderlecht and Twente fought for fifth spot
Belgium's Anderlecht and FC Twente battled for fifth and sixth place. It was the first time they met in this tournament. With a 2-0 victory Anderlecht became fifth and FC Twente occupied the sixth position. The Dutch teams Feyenoord and PSV met each other during the game for seventh and eighth place. PSV managed to win this match 2-0 and took the seventh position, befor Rotterdam.
Grol proud of tenth position
Home team Grol ended her group phase with 3 points this year. In a thrilling match against Galatasary, which referee Johnson never seemed to end, both Mathijs Warnar and Mark Peters netted the ball. Therefore Grol met last years losing finalist Real Madrid in the match for the night position. Real ended this game with a 2-0 winning while Grol can be very proud on reaching the tenth position.
Foreign debutant close rankings
Two foreign newcomers closed the ranking this year. Turkey's Galatasaray didn’t manage to win a game in their group. Last Friday Konoplev from Russia began the tournament well when beating Twente. Unfortunately they did not managed to go ahead and eventually they won the game for the 11th place from Galatasaray.
The Marveld Tournament under 15 organisation can once again look back on a successful tournament. Many visitors came to Groenlo to see the 21st Marveld Tournament, there were no serious injuries, the atmosphere was formidable and most important: for three days one could witness fantastic football on the various fields.
Results Marveld Tournament under 15 2010:
1: Auxerre
2: Bröndby
3: Manchester United
4: Ajax
5: Anderlecht

Reds name provisional Milk Cup squad
Posted by nickogs20 on July 13, 2010
With just under a fortnight until United launch their bid for a third straight Northern Ireland Milk Cup success, we can reveal the provisional 18-man squad that Paul McGuinness will have at his disposal when the Reds kick off their campaign against County Tyrone on July 26.
The squad is listed in the official tournament souvenir programme and as such is subject to change, with injuries, international callups and the requirements of reserve team coaches Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Warren Joyce all having the potential to enforce late alterations. The provisional squad is listed below:
1. Sam Johnstone
2. Alberto Massacci
3. Luke Giverin
4. Michele Fornasier
5. Sean McGinty
6. Tom Thorpe
7. Paul Pogba
8. Larnell Cole
9. John Cofie
10. Will Keane
11. Etzaz Hussain
12. Michael Keane
13. Joe Coll
14. Tom Lawrence
15. Luke McCullough
16. Charni Ekangamene
17. Tyler Blackett
18. Luke Hendrie
As things stand, nine of last year’s victorious squad (Johnstone, Giverin, Thorpe, McGinty, Cole, Cofie, W Keane, Hussain, M Keane) will get the chance to complete a Milk Cup double, while Pogba, Massacci and Fornasier will be looking to make up for missing last year’s tournament due to wrangles with their former clubs over the transfer of their playing registrations. The rest of the group is made up of six of the seven new first-year scholars, with keeper Liam Jacob the odd one out – understandable given the presence of fellow custodians Johnstone and Joe Coll in the 18. Jacob is likely to get the chance to feature for the reserves while his peers are at the tournament, as Ben Amos will still be away with the first-team in North America and Conor Devlin looks set to also be at the Milk Cup with the Northern Ireland U20 side.
Perhaps the most intriguing aspect of the squad is a name that’s not in it, that of midfielder Ravel Morrison. The 17 year-old was part of the squad last time around and is still eligible to play this year, but his absence – combined with his presence in the second string starting line-up for last night’s win over Curzon Ashton – suggests that the young Mancunian will instead be playing a big part in the reserves’ pre-season preparations.

Ada perubahan dalam Squad United yang mengikuti kompetisi Milk Cup 2010
the full squad is listed below:
1. Liam Jacob
2. Bradley Anderson
3. Luke Giverin
4. Michele Fornasier
5. Sean McGinty
6. Tom Thorpe (c)
7. Tom Lawrence
8. Larnell Cole
9. John Cofie
10. Will Keane
11. Etzaz Hussain
12. Michael Keane
13. Joe Coll
14. Jack Barmby
15. Donald Love
16. Charni Ekangamene
17. Tyler Blackett
18. Luke Hendrie
That list differs slightly from the provisional squad named a couple of weeks ago, with Sam Johnstone, Alberto Massacci, Paul Pogba and Luke McCullough dropping out. Johnstone – who will presumably continue to share goalkeeping playing time in the reserves with Conor Devlin – is replaced by new scholar Liam Jacob, while schoolboys Bradley Anderson, Donald Love and Jack Barmby come in for the other three, who presumably are nursing injuries.
Picking the likely first XI is tricky, particularly at the centre of defence, where captain Tom Thorpe could be partnered by either Michele Fornasier or Sean McGinty, and on the flanks, where the only genuine winger is late call-up Barmby. Who starts at full-back and in the centre of midfield is open to some debate as well. The only relative safe bets are that Joe Coll will start in goal and Will Keane and John Cofie will form the front pairing. If my arm were to be twisted and I had to pick a team, it would be: Coll; M Keane, Thorpe, Fornasier, McGinty; Cole, Lawrence, Hussain, Barmby; W Keane, Cofie. Unlike last year however, when I got the lineup spot on in my preview, I have very little confidence in that prediction…

Milk Cup dream turns sour
United's chances of retaining the prestigious Milk Cup for a third successive year ended on Tuesday night when Paul McGuinness' side crashed to a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Qatar's Aspire Academy.
Left-back Tyler Blackett netted a stunning long-range strike in second-half injury time but it proved too little, too late after an uncharacteristically lacklustre performance from the Under-17s.
In front of a sizable crowd at the Showgounds in Coleraine, McGuinness' men struggled all evening to create clear-cut chances against a well-drilled Aspire outfit. The Qatar side also lacked penetration in the first period, but two quickfire goals from Jasper Uwaegbulam after the interval settled the contest.
Despite winning Monday's opening game 4-0, the defeat meant the young Reds finished fifth in the group and missed out on a spot in the quarter-finals. Instead, United will spend the rest of the week in Northern Ireland competing for the Slemish Trophy.
The Reds meet Co. Down at 3pm on Wednesday at The Warren, Portstewart.
United's Milk Cup squad: Liam Jacob, Bradley Anderson, Luke Giverin, Michele Fornasier, Sean McGinty, Thomas Thorpe, Thomas Lawrence, Larnell Cole, John Cofie, William Keane, Etzaz Hussain, Michael Keane, Joseph Coll, Jack Barmby, Donald Love, Charni Ekangamene, Tyler Blackett, Luke Hendrie.

Over 9000 teams from 43 countries, 20 Finalists.....found out more about our 20 finalists for MUPC2010
FC Barcelona was the first team to lift the trophy for a second time, and although Coach Victor Sánchez rates his young team highly, he admits, "For us the most important thing is to make sure the team enjoy this experience. If we achieve that we'll show the best of FC Barcelona and provide some entertaining football".
Brazil's 2000 Premier Cup World Champions Internaçional may be looking to secure a 2nd World Finals trophy for their cabinet but Coach does not underestimate the challenges ahead, "With the globalisation of football the styles are very similar - but each country has strengths and weaknesses. It is our role to find out how to exploit these."
FC Porto won the inaugural edition back in 1994 before the tournament went global in 1997 and have since only reached 2nd place, but are on a winning streak after beating FC Barcelona in this year's tournament in Bilbao whilst six times World Finalists Paris Saint-Germain are determined to improve on their best finish to date, second place in 2005.
South Africa's Orlando Pirates FC have vast experience at MUPC and, in this world championship year, are particularly determined to improve on previous results. With that in mind Coach Augusto Palacios took the team on a month-long training camp in preparation for the tournament. "We have developed specialised training sessions with a different technical focus for each player. Although we hope to improve on our previous performances, our main concern in Manchester will be to reduce the pressure on our young players to succeed."
2009 Runners-up SV Werder Bremen battled their way through three penalty shoot-outs in Germany's MUPC Finals in Berlin to qualify for Manchester. In the light of last year's defeat by Sao Paulo, Coach Marco Grote cites South American teams as the most dangerous but admits: "Our main goal is to represent Werder Bremen with dignity."
Host team Manchester United's best showing to date was when they reached the final at Old Trafford back in 2004, only to lose out to local rivals Manchester City. This year's UK qualifiers are Newcastle United, at the final stages for the first time this year, alongside Italian qualifiers Torino FC who secured their place after beating FC Juventus in a thrilling 4:2 final encounter. Coach Roberto Fogli is very pleased with his team's performance so far and hopes that the summer break does not disrupt their rhythm. "We will need to get back to form quickly because to beat teams of such a high calibre we will need to play our very best football!"
Colo Colo will represent Chile for the fourth time in Manchester and aim for a top ten finish whilst Steve Lucey, Coach to third time USA qualifiers Alta Loma Arsenal SC says his team will "play to win" and hopes to "finish higher than any previous team from the US!"
Turkish football Academy Bucaspor were surprise winners of the European Qualification tournament in Denmark but Coach Murat Dizdar has great confidence in his young team: "Our players are talented and creative and we hope they will give of their best. Our success will be measured by the quality of our football, played in the spirit of fair play."
Other teams qualifying for Manchester for the first time this year include Pachuca FC from Mexico, Japan's Kyoto Sanga FC, Sutherland Sharks FC from Australia, India's Shillong Lajong FC and Malaysian team MSS Kedah. Barkis Ismail is very proud to be the first coach from Malaysia to win a place at the World Finals through the qualifying stages and hopes his team can learn from the experience. "We are overjoyed of course but although our players are individually very skilful, they need further strength training. We hope that the experience of playing for the first time in Europe will help them to develop."
China's Changchun Yatai FC narrowly won their place in Manchester with skilful displays throughout their national tournament; whilst three times Korean MUPC Champions Ulsan Hyundai Middle School cruised into this year's World Finals with a stunning 4:1 final match, leading Coach DoKyun Kim to target a semi final place this year. However, he voiced a common concern amongst teams travelling long distances to reach Manchester: "Our biggest challenge will be helping the team recover from the time difference - so our strategy will be to concentrate on our defensive play and break swiftly to attack!"
Another team with a long journey to Manchester is the Right to Dream Academy from Ghana. Academy Manager Andy Farrant hopes the team can improve on previous 5th & 3rd place finishes, but admits: "As always in tournament conditions, the draw will be crucial. We just hope our boys perform at their best, it's impossible to ask for any more than that. If their best can take us all the way to the final, then we will be delighted of course, but if not, we can still be satisfied that we gave it our all, and that the boys could do no more in their pursuit of victory."
Twenty teams will travel to Manchester; 320 young hopefuls from different backgrounds and different cultures brought together by just one dream - to become the Manchester United Premier Cup Champions of the world!

Paul McGuinness' under-18s made a stunning start to the new Academy season with a dramatic, last-gasp victory over Chelsea at Cobham.
John Cofie struck with virtually the final kick of the game to take the win, capping earlier goals from Sean McGinty and Michael Keane as the Reds roared back from a two-goal deficit in typically defiant fashion.
An absorbing game ebbed and flowed from the first whistle. United missed opportunities to forge ahead through Jesse Lingard and Etzaz Hussain, and that profligacy was punished when Milan Lalkovic pipped Sam Johnstone to a loose ball and slotted home.
Having taken the lead against the run of play, Chelsea began to dominate and doubled their lead when Philipp Prosinek capped a fine passing move with an emphatic header.
Within seconds of the restart, however, United halved the arrears when left-back McGinty smashed home an angled effort from just outside the Chelsea area.
The second half followed the same end-to-end pattern as the first, as Bobby Devyne wasted a decent opening for hosts, before Larnell Cole's fierce effort was saved by Blues goalkeeper Jamal Blackman.
Chelsea seemed the likelier to grab the game's fourth goal, as Devyne forced a solid save from Johstone and substitute Mesca curled just over the bar, but United snatched parity with 17 minutes remaining.
Ryan Tunnicliffe's burst into the area created an opening for Cofie and, although the striker's shot was blocked, Keane was on hand to roll home the finish and haul the Reds level.
Both teams poured forward in the dying stages in a big to snatch victory, and United edged a thrilling encounter in injury-time. Tom Thorpe's approach play fed Cofie, who confidently finished to secure a stunning victory for the Reds.
United starting XI: Johnstone; M Keane, Fornasier, Thorpe, McGinty; Hussain, Tunnicliffe, Cole, Lawrence, Lingard; Cofie.

U18s: United 5 Cardiff 0
United's Under-18s routed Cardiff City 5-0 at Carrington on Saturday morning to continue the Reds' unbeaten start to the season.
After last weekend's drama in an injury-time 3-2 triumph away to Chelsea, this was a far more straightforward victory on home turf.
United completely dominated the first half and took a deserved 2-0 half-time lead through goals from defenders Sean McGinty and Michele Fornasier, before Tom Lawrence, John Cofie and Jack Barmby extended the scoreline after the break.
The opening goal arrived after 19 minutes when Tom Lawrence pulled the ball back after Cardiff failed to clear a corner and Irish defender Sean McGinty tapped the ball home from close-range. It's his second goal in as many games for the U18s, and in truth it was more difficult to miss.
Five minutes later the Reds doubled the lead, with another defender opening his account for the season - the fourth defender in two games to do so - and another goal invited on themselves by the visitors. The Bluebirds failed to deal with Larnell Cole's corner and Italian centre-half Michele Fornasier, who signed professional forms with United this week, was free to head the ball into the empty net.
It took United just ten minutes of the second half to find the third goal, which came from the penalty spot.
Norwegian midfielder Etzaz Hussain picked out Tom Lawrence's run and flighted a brilliant ball beyond the Cardiff defence. Lawrence was sandwiched by Cardiff's keeper and a Bluebirds defender to earn a penalty. The young Welshman dusted himself down and stepped up to take the penalty. He shaped to put his foot through it, but instead placed his shot past the deceived keeper.
As in the first half, United added another goal in quick succession. This time it was striker John Cofie, who scored the winner in the dramatic 3-2 victory over Chelsea last week. The Reds struck on the break, with midfielder Ryan Tunnicliffe going on a typically rampaging surge forward before playing in Cofie, who applied a calm finish to make it 4-0.
McGuinness' young side refused to rest on the scoreline, pressing forward for more goals. Lawrence went close to his second of the match with a glancing header that drifted just wide of the post, while substitute Jack Barmby hit the bar with a fine long-range effort.
But the Reds midfielder - son of professional footballer Nicky - did manage to get on the scoresheet for the first time for the U18s by converting an 87th minute spot-kick. And that completed a convincing victory for the Reds.
United: Johnstone; Fornasier, Thorpe (Giverin 62), McGinty, Fryers; Lawrence, Tunnicliffe, Cole (Barmby 71), Hussain, Lingard (Ekangamene 67); Cofie.

United's Under 18s maintained a maximum-points start to the new Academy League season by winning away in West Yorkshire.
The Reds had the early fillip of John Cofie's 14th-minute goal, a side-footed finish past Huddersfield goalkeeper Lloyd Allinson. However, the visitors were not as clinical with the ensuing opportunities and therefore a game that could have been wrapped up by half-time remained dangerously in the balance. Ravel Morrison came closest to doubling the lead in the period of profligacy when his effort after 25 minutes struck the crossbar.
It was a similar story after the break with Allinson, the busier of the two keepers, making several good saves to keep United at bay. Tom Thorpe should have beaten him though, with a golden chance inside the six-yard box.
Still leading just 1-0, the Reds were almost made to pay for their misses when Matt Crooks' effort was first saved by United's Joseph Coll and then the same Huddersfield player's header, from the resulting corner, was fortunately disallowed for a push in the area.
The reprieve was enough to push the Reds on to eventually get the all-important second goal, seven minutes from time, when Larnell Cole capped a jinking run on the right with a lethal angled shot. Fine saves at both ends then followed before Thorpe made it 3-0 in injury time, heading into an empty net from Morrizon's mazy dribble and chipped pass.
United: Coll; Fornasier, Thorpe, McGinty, M Keane; Lawrence, Cole, Morrison, Lingard; Cofie, W Keane. Subs not used: Giverin, Jacob, Ekangamene.
