[Friendly] Belanda vs Inggris
Kamis, 13 Agustus 2009
Kick Off : 01.45 WIB
Venue : Amsterdam ArenA

Holland vs England

The English players will start their season by travelling to Amsterdam to face Holland in a midweek friendly clash. The Premier League season has not even started and many of the English players will have to get their first game playing for their nation. The Dutch season has already started but for the foreign based Dutch players, they will get their first game on their belt in the friendly match. Both teams will be fielding a strong starting lineup.

The Oranje camp will feature without their veteran goal keeper, Edwin Van De Saar, as he is out after receiving surgery to his right hand. He will be replaced by either Maarten Stekenburg or Michael Vorm in goal. New appointed Dutch Coach Bert van Marwijk has named 4 England based players in his 21 man squad. Liverpool duo Dirk Kuyt and Ryan Babel have been selected alongside Arsenal’s Robin van Persie and Nigel de Jong of Manchester City. While former England based players, Andre Oojer and Arjen Robben could also feature in the starting lineup. Giovanni van Bronkhorst is the only absentee of the original selected 22 man squad, as he is struggling with a knee injury. Holland hves already qualified for the World Cup 2010 so therefore van Marwijk will be testing some players out in order to get a clear idea of his squad for next year’s tournament.

Coach Fabio Capello has picked his 23 man squad for the highly competitive match against the Dutch team at Amsterdam Arena. There are a few surprises as Peter Crouch and Michael Owen are not picked, while the Italian has named Wayne Rooney, Emile Heskey, Jermain Defoe and Carlton Cole as the 4 strikers to provide the goals. The midfield sees a few familiar faces as the likes of Beckham, Ashley Young, Lampard, Barry and Carrick. They are first pick for the starting line up on the night. The back four could see Ferdinand, Cole, Johnsen and Terry guarding the rear. David James and ben Foster have been left out due to an injury and therefore City’s Joe Hart, West Ham United’s Robert Green and Blackburn Rovers’ Paul Robinson will compete for the goalkeeper position. Capello is looking to quickly restore the English confidence with a victory against Holland. It is also anticipated that Capello will be rotating the squad during half time.

A minute of silence will be held to commemorate the life of Sir Bobby Robson as a he managed both places, in England and Holland football. This friendly match will serve both coaches an insight of how their players are reacting after a long summer vacation. Even though it is a friendly match, it will be a tough one as both teams are highly rated in the Fifa ranking. The Dutch team are unbeaten in 10 games while England has scored 16 goals in 4 games. A draw would be suitable for this occasion.

Capello promises to look after his star names
soccernet

Fabio Capello has promised worried Premier League bosses he will not risk their star men in England's friendly with Holland.

Steven Gerrard and Ben Foster have already pulled out, with Theo Walcott almost certain to follow them after withdrawing from training on Tuesday night without making any meaningful contribution.

Capello has also reported a slight doubt over Emile Heskey due to a long-standing Achilles complaint.

And, having pledged to make the maximum six substitutions, the Italian has attempted to reassure club bosses anxiously waiting for the curtain to go up on a new Premier League season at the weekend.

"I always try to help the managers," said Capello. "When I was a club manager, I said the same things as them. I didn't like it (an August friendly) either. That is normal.

"I didn't decide this date, FIFA did it. I have to choose the best players for the England team because I think it is very important. But I will make six substitutions because it is important to look after the players."

Capello has confirmed Gerrard's injury means Ashley Young will start for the first time after five previous substitute appearances for the Aston Villa man.

Two of those caps came during Capello's reign. The first represented just about the only negative from a marvellous night in Berlin last November, when England defeated Germany.

As the second came in a six-goal rout of Andorra in June, it is that first disappointing appearance that provides the reference point for Capello's analysis.

"Every player has a different style and Ashley Young is really important because he is one of the English players who can dribble and take people on one on one," said Capello. "He has only played twice for me. The first time it was so-so. The second he played very well.

"Now he needs the confidence to perform against one of the best national sides in the world."

Young represents the example for every young player to follow as England embark on an 11-month period they hope will end in World Cup glory.

Frank Lampard has described it as the biggest moment in so many England careers. Capello is not about to disagree. And he includes his own.

"They were very important words from one of the leaders of the team," said Capello. "And I think the other players think the same. It is really important for them, and for me. But first we have to get there. Then we will focus on the World Cup."

Jermain Defoe scores twice as England make amends for defensive howlers

This friendly might have been more informative than Fabio Capello's blood pressure could safely withstand. Laughable mistakes had his men 2-0 down, but the recovery through a pair of goals from the substitute Jermain Defoe was impressive. The visitors would have won had Carlton Cole not sent a late header past the post, but this had still been a disconcerting way to restart business following the summer break.

A new season is supposed to have everyone starting with a clean sheet, but all that was wiped away in the first half here was the reliability that has been acquired under Capello. The errors smacked of times and managers gone by, even if the side had some reasonable moments when launching attacks of their own. It was hard for those efforts to compensate for the incompetence in mind.

Rio Ferdinand, in particular, will have dreaded his return to the dressing room at the interval. He can seldom have been so hapless for club or country. Given the ball in the right-back position, he hit a weak backpass in the direction of Robert Green in the 10th minute. Dirk Kuyt intercepted and, with a poise that may have come as a surprise to Liverpool followers, worked his way round the goalkeeper. John Terry could not prevent the forward's shot from finding the net.

The other Dutch goal in the first half at least ensured that someone else could be reproached. Gareth Barry gave the ball away so that Arjen Robben could burst through and the although the impressive Robert Green saved, Rafael van der Vaart swept the loose ball into the net. The normal disciplines of football at any level, let alone in the international sphere, had disappeared where England were concerned.

The nature of the occasion would not have let anyone dismiss the mishaps with a shrug. Supporters do attend friendlies with a full knowledge of the tedium and expense to be inflicted on them. England, however, had become an exception by offering endeavour and even a dash of entertainment. Footballers working for Capello will, by now, have been shrewd enough to work out that listlessness on the field is an offence that will be punished, irrespective of the status of the fixture in question.

The Italian is on record as saying that, when the team comes into the dressing room, he demands a few minutes of silence while everyone composes themselves. It may have been quite a task for the manager to stick to that calm approach last night. The situation might have been worse still had a header by the unmarked Kuyt at the far post not been stopped by the legs of Green after half an hour. The goalkeeper then had to turn an attempt by Robben over the bar after the winger had torn past Glen Johnson, who could not carry out defensive duties with any reliability.

The odd aspect was that England, when in possession, acquitted themselves fairly well. To the annoyance of those who feel that David Beckham has outstayed his welcome at international level, the veteran used the ball well. One free-kick from the right in the 23rd minute picked out Frank Lampard, but he could not quite connect properly.

Beckham had also linked with the Chelsea player earlier, but the through pass left Lampard at an angle on the right and he could not force a finish past the goalkeeper, Maarten Stekelenburg. There were hints of the competence that would allow the visitors to cut the deficit at the start of the second half.

The opportunity to display powers of recovery was not squandered. In the 49th minute Defoe, on for Emile Heskey, pursued a long ball from Lampard and cut the lead. His impeccable shot clipped the inside of the post on its way to the net. Other substitutions saw Michael Carrick take over from Barry and Shaun Wright-Phillips relieve Beckham. From an English viewpoint, the most welcome sight of all was watching Robben leave the field.

He had been uncontainable. Johnson, in particular, had suffered while failing to contain the winger and, for that matter, Robin van Persie. The Liverpool right-back will not be sent into exile, especially since alternatives are scarce, but Capello must be pondering that position with some urgency.

This game, like so many friendlies, lost its impetus as the more renowned players went off. Wayne Rooney's night, for instance, came to a close when Carlton Cole was sent out to acquire some experience. The West Ham attacker, as it turned, out had more in mind than that, and he almost equalised when he juggled the ball confidently and got into position for a drive that flew just past the post. A little earlier James Milner, on for his debut in place of Ashley Young, had set up Defoe with a cross, but the header went high.

The combination worked far better when the Villa winger broke through on the left in the 77th minute and delivered an ideal low ball that Defoe turned in for an equaliser. England's work varied widely in quality, but the persistence was never in question.

Holland v England: player ratings
How did the players fare as Holland drew 2-2 with England at the Amsterdam ArenA, in Amsterdam, on Wednesday Aug 12, 2009.

By Duncan White in Amsterdam
Published: 9:45PM BST 12 Aug 2009

ENGLAND

Robert Green 6

Not really his fault that England found themselves two down at half-time and did well to stop a Kuyt shot with his feet. Kicking was erratic.

Glen Johnson 6

Struggled to contain Robben when the winger switched to his flank and was also done by his new Liverpool team-mate Ryan Babel. Did not get into the attacking areas where he does his best work.

John Terry 7

Dominant as ever in the air and made some crucial interceptions. Kept a good high line and, unlike some his team-mates, passed the ball sleekly.

Rio Ferdinand 5

His awful back-pass gifted the Dutch the lead. A basic error of concentration that was a throwback to the sloppiness of his younger years. Capello must hope it was an aberration.

Ashley Cole 7

Tidy enough at the back but, like Johnson, rarely ventured into the Dutch half. Still he showed his experience and used the ball efficiently.

David Beckham 6

Started promisingly, delivering some trademark set pieces and Hollywood passes but tired very quickly and was replaced by Wright Phillips at half-time.

Frank Lampard 7

Uncharacteristically lackadaisical on the ball in the first half but improved in the second and look purposeful when he got into the attacking third. Set up Defoe’s goal with a weighted through ball.

Gareth Barry 5

Was energetic in the early phase but, like Ferdinand, guilty of a giving away a goal with a dumb pass. Hauled off at the break.

Ashley Young 6

Missed a chance to impress. He failed to really get into the game and his final ball lacked the conviction with which he hits it in a Villa shirt.

Wayne Rooney 7

Came close with a sweetly struck volley off a Heskey knockdown but was crowded off the ball and did not get on the ball as often as he would have liked.

Emile Heskey 7

An encouraging performance. Despite an Achilles problem he gave the Dutch centre halves a hard time, holding the ball up and dishing off expertly.

Manager Fabio Capello 8

Could not have anticipated the basic errors that left England two down at the break but his substitutions seized the initiative from the Dutch. Great managers change games.

Substitutes

Jermain Defoe 8 (for Heskey h-t) Superb left-foot finish minutes after coming on and showed striking instincts for the second.
Michael Carrick 7 (for Barry h-t) Only one loss of possession disrupted the calm.
Shaun Wright-Phillips 7 (for Beckham h-t) Offered more menace than Beckham down the right.
Carlton Cole 7 (for Rooney 59) Nearly scored with a fine volley.
James Milner 8 (for Young 67) Very impressive. Great work to set up the equaliser.
Wayne Bridge 6 (for Cole 84) Too late to make an impression.

French revolution, Messi beats Brazil
ESPNsoccernet - November 16, 2010

Andy Carroll made a promising debut but England were outplayed for long periods as they were beaten 2-1 by France at Wembley.

Karim Benzema and Mathieu Valbuena were on target for France who dominated for long spells against an inexperienced England side. Substitute Peter Crouch scored his 22nd goal for England as a late substitute.

A Lionel Messi wonder goal saw Argentina narrowly edge out Brazil 1-0 in a friendly in Doha to register their first win over their arch-rivals in five years.

Messi settled an even contest in the final minute, the Barcelona star picking up Ezequiel Lavezzi's pass before slaloming past four defenders and stroking the ball home into the corner of the net.

AC Milan playmaker Ronaldinho, back in the Brazil squad for the first time in 19 months, enjoyed a solid performance on his return to the team but failed to cap it with a goal as Sergio Romero enjoyed a good night in the Argentina goal.

Portugal gained a measure of revenge for their World Cup exit at the hands of Spain by inflicting a humiliating 4-0 defeat on their Iberian neighbours in Lisbon.

Goals from Jorge Carlos Martins, Spain defender Sergio Ramos, who put into his own net, Helder Postiga and Hugo Almeida sealed a deserved win for the Portuguese.

Belgium eased to a 2-0 win over Russia in Voronezh. Romelu Lukaku proved the difference between the two sides with a goal in each half, first tapping home after two minutes when Eden Hazard dispossessed Russia goalkeeper Igor Akinfeev and centred for the Anderlecht striker. Lukaku added his second 17 minutes from time with a low drive from just inside the area.

A late penalty from Rory Patterson spared Northern Ireland goalkeeper Alan Blayney's blushes in a low-key 1-1 draw with Morocco. Substitute Blayney handed the visitors the lead on a wet and windy night at Windsor Park when he miscontrolled a backpass and his clearance rebounded into the net off Arsenal's Marouane Chamakh. Blayney then partially redeemed himself by tipping a fierce Adil Hermach drive onto the bar and Patterson stepped up to force a draw after Josh McQuoid was fouled five minutes from time.

Morten Gamst Pedersen ruined Shay Given's big night as Norway came from behind to snatch a 2-1 victory over the Republic of Ireland at the Aviva Stadium.

The Blackburn midfielder curled a superb 34th-minute free-kick past Given, who was making a record 109th appearance for his country, to cancel out Shane Long's fifth-minute penalty. However, Pedersen was not finished and it was he who provided the cross from which striker Erik Huseklepp fired the visitors to victory four minutes from time.

An own goal from Ciprian Marica handed Italy a deserved 1-1 draw against Romania. Marica nodded the ball into his own net in the 83rd minute after substitute Fabio Quagliarella had managed to get a touch to Andrea Pirlo's corner. Marica had earlier been poised to emerge as the hero for Romania after scoring the opener in the first half, but finished with a goal at both ends as the Azzurri battled back late on.

Klaas Jan Huntelaar scored the only goal as Holland defeated Turkey in Amsterdam. Huntelaar struck after 52 minutes when he found the net from the edge of the area.

Sweden and Germany ground out a yawn-inducing 0-0 draw. Star names were missing from both sides, with Zlatan Ibrahimovic absent for the hosts and Mesut Ozil, Miroslav Klose and Lukas Podolski all out for their opponents. The game missed their quality, with neither side seriously threatening despite a handful of hopeful efforts.

Former Italy coach Marcello Lippi was present at Stade de Geneve as Ukraine drew 2-2 with Switzerland. Lippi has been strongly tipped to take charge of Ukraine for Euro 2012 but saw his suitors twice fall behind to strikes either side of the break by Switzerland captain Alexander Frei.

Ukraine pulled level at 1-1 through Oleksandr Aliyev after 48th, and after Frei had restored the hosts' lead, Yvgenii Konoplianka popped up with a superb effort 15 minutes from time to seal the draw.

Bosnia-Herzegovina defeated Slovakia 3-2 in an entertaining encounter in Bratislava. Filip Sebo fired Slovakia ahead after three minutes but Haris Medunjanin levelled shortly before the half-hour. Miralem Pjanic fired Bosnia ahead after 50 minutes and Edin Dzeko made it 3-1 on the hour, before Peter Grajciar pulled one back for the hosts 24 minutes from time.

Birmingham striker Nikola Zigic proved the difference as Serbia posted a 1-0 win over Bulgaria, the giant striker firing home from inside the area 10 minutes from time.

Georgios Fotakis enjoyed a dream debut as he led Greece to a 2-1 win over Austria. PAOK midfielder Fotakis set up Greece's opener for Georgios Samaras after 48 minutes, and after Christian Fuchs had levelled for Austria, Fotakis popped up with his first international goal nine minutes from time to seal victory.

Denmark were left to rue Michael Krohn-Dehli's penalty miss as they were held to a 0-0 draw at home to the Czech Republic.

Tamas Priskin and Balazs Dzsudzsak were on target as Hungary beat Lithuania 2-0, while Israel were 3-2 winners against Iceland with Georgia 2-1 winners over Slovenia.

Strikes from Ahmed Abdul-Zaher, Mohamed Nagy and Mohamed Zidan saw Egypt to a comfortable 3-0 win over Australia and Montenegro beat Azerbaijan 2-0 with goals from Luka Pejovic and Fatos Beciraj.

Goalless draws came from Albania against Macedonia and Luxembourg vs. Algeria.

Juan Agudelo became the youngest USA player to score in the modern era, giving the Americans a 1-0 victory over South Africa on Wednesday that allowed them to avoid finishing the year with a losing record.

Roque Santa Cruz scored twice as Paraguay crushed Hong Kong 7-0 in a friendly encounter on Wednesday. The Manchester City forward, who is set to leave the club in January after making just two appearances this season, opened the scoring for the World Cup quarter-finalists after just five minutes.

Edgar Barreto added a second just after the half-hour before Santa Cruz completed his brace in the 33rd minute. Nestor Ortigoza made it 4-0 two minutes into the second half and the midfielder scored again in the 54th minute. Late goals from Marcos Riveros and Cristian Riveros completed the rout.

Oman suffered a 4-0 hammering at the hands of Belarus at Al Seeb stadium. The home side fell behind after only five minutes when Alyaksandr Martynovich scored, and the 23-year-old defender added his second goal of the night six minutes later. Vyacheslav Hleb added the third goal for Belarus after 35 minutes before Vitali Rodionov scored the fourth in the 57th minute.

Saudi Arabia completed their preparations for the Gulf Cup as they held Ghana to a goalless draw in a friendly at Al Maktoum stadium in the United Arab Emirates. The draw was the second in a row for the Saudis after their scoreless stalemate with Uganda on Tuesday. The Saudis have been drawn in Group A of the Gulf Cup along with Yemen, Kuwait and Qatar, while they will play in Group B of the 2011 AFC Asian Cup along with Syria, Jordan and Japan.

Kuwait were held to a draw by Asian champions Iraq in their international friendly match at Bani Yas stadium. Iraq opened the scoring in the final minute of the first half through their striker Younis Mahmoud before Kuwait levelled the scores seven minutes after the hour mark when Mesaed Nada netted.

China needed a last gasp strike from Xu Yang to overcome Latvia 1-0, while Iran against Nigeria was postponed.

Robert Lewandowski bagged a brace in Poland's 3-1 win over Ivory Coast. Lewandowski opened the scoring in the 19th minute before Gervinho pulled one back for the Ivorians on the stroke of the break. Ludovic Obraniak's free-kick restored Poland's lead before Lewandowski made sure of the win 10 minutes from time.

In all-African friendly encounters, Senegal were 2-1 winners over Gabon, Mali beat DR Congo 3-1, Mozambique went down to a 3-1 loss to Zimbabwe and Burkina Faso posted a 2-1 victory over Guinea.
