Dan Robinson, Tom Bloxham from Urban Splash and Nazir Meah who are all off to the Sahara Desert

TWO Manchester United favourites, a property tycoon and hordes of Reds fans are getting ready to swap Old Trafford for the Sahara desert.

Denis Irwin and Andy Ritchie are part of the group bidding to trek 100 kilometres in November.

They will be joined by Urban Splash chairman Tom Bloxham and 25 adventurous Reds fans during their gruelling week-long expedition.

The celebrity trio hope to raise thousands for the Manchester United Foundation - which aims to provide opportunities for disadvantaged youngsters in the region.

Volunteer Dan Robinson, who works for the foundation's social inclusion project Kickz in Trafford, jumped at the chance to take part in the `once-in-a-lifetime' opportunity.

The 22-year-old United fan said: "I never expected to be going to the Sahara desert with two legends so it's a dream come true."

Dan and colleague Nazir Meah, 21, hope to raise £7,000 and their efforts were kick-started by a £3,200 donation from trustee Mr Bloxham.

Rio - Anton, Misi Sosial ke Uganda

Misi Sosial ke Uganda

http://i46.photobucket.com/albums/f150/rondwisan/rio_anton.jpg

Kampanyekan Anti-Kekerasan

http://media.vivanews.com/thumbs/55349_rio_ferdinand_thumb_300_225.jpg

Lain Ronaldinho lain pula bek Manchester United Rio Ferdinand.

Ryan Giggs, Rio Ferdinand and Patrice Evra have joined forces with UNICEF to front a new AIDS awareness advertising campaign in Sierra Leone.

From early in 2008, the TV, radio and billboard campaign will promote HIV and AIDS prevention in Sierra Leone's 13 districts. It will be aimed at those at greatest risk - over three million young people - by tapping into United's huge popularity in the country.

Each player will deliver one of these HIV and AIDS prevention messages:

1. Stigma: “AIDS destroys your health and kills, but so can the stigma of HIV. Stop blaming others! Stigma on HIV spreads the disease.”

2. Encouraging safe sexual practice: “Keeping my body fit and healthy is vital for my game. AIDS destroys a healthy body. Keep yourself healthy and protect your loved ones. Use a condom. Only you can stop AIDS.”

3. Getting tested: “AIDS destroys your health and kills. Knowing your HIV status will help you protect your health and that of your loved ones. Get tested for HIV - Now! Know your HIV status and live a healthy life.”

Although the number of people living with HIV in Sierra Leone stands at 1.5%, the country has seen a 75% increase in all new HIV infections since 2002. With low awareness of the dangers, and infection rates rapidly rising, the need to reach young people and encourage them to change their sexual behaviour is vital.

Dream day for supporters

The United players took time out from training recently to meet supporters with life-limiting illnesses.

The fans had made a wish to meet their idols and it was granted by charities Dream Come True and Rays of Sunshine in association with the Manchester United Foundation.

The sun kept shining while guests watched a first team training session. Afterwards they enjoyed a meet and greet with Sir Alex Ferguson and the players. Later, some fans took the opportunity to go to the museum and take a tour of Old Trafford.

Some of the fans travelled with their relatives or carers from as far away as Devon and Cornwall. All enjoyed the day, from the youngest aged 10 to the eldest at 26.

Corey, 10, who has Spinal Muscular Actophy Type II, said, "It’s been brilliant, just brilliant." His dad Matthew said, "Corey’s in awe, I’ve never seen him so quiet. He’s loved it."

Sarah, 25, who has Dentator Urbal-Pallidluysian Atrophy, loved showing off her signed United shirt. Her carer Nickie Allen added, "It’s been fab. The lads were really nice."

Natalie, 20, from Cheshire was ecstatic at meeting Danny Simpson and Cristiano Ronaldo in particular. "Absolutely amazing, fantastic, top notch!" she said, summing up her experience.

Since 2000, Manchester United has been proud to host more than 20 such events, known as Dream Days. All have been a great success, bringing a lot of joy to all concerned.

UNITED manager Sir Alex Ferguson and former Bolton boss Sam Allardyce pitted their skills on the golf course to raise funds for a hospital and one of the region's football minnows.

The pair were among the region's soccer big guns who supported the Bernard Manning Charity Golf Classic at Mere Golf Club near Knutsford.

Some 32 teams raised funds for Radcliffe Borough FC and the North Manchester General Hospital diabetes centre.

This was the first of the golf classics to be held since Manchester comic Manning's death last June.

Radcliffe Borough director David Murgatroyd said that without the funds raised by the event the club would struggle.

Manchester United Chief Executive David Gill has pledged to match Vodacom’s contribution of R50,000 (approximately £3300) for every goal scored in this year’s pre-season tournament in South Africa.

All money raised in the Vodacom Challenge Goals For Miracles campaign will help fund cataract operations performed through the South African National Council for the Blind (SANCB), the Pretoria Eye Institute’s Sight 4 U Cataract Project, and the Netcare Vodacom Sight For Life Programme.

Speaking at a gala dinner held in Johannesburg on Wednesday evening, Mr Gill praised the initiative and said United would be honoured to match the tournament sponsors’ generosity.

He said he also hoped it would inspire Sir Alex’s side to find the net in their third and final match, to be played in Pretoria on Saturday 26 July.

The tournament total currently stands at R150,000 after the Reds drew 1-1 with Kaizer Chiefs and defeated Orland Pirates 1-0. The two South African clubs meet on Wednesday 24 July, with the winner earning a spot in the final alongside Manchester United.

Duo visit UNICEF project

UNICEF UK Ambassador Ryan Giggs and Chris Eagles took time out from the Reds' pre-season tour of South Africa to learn about the impact of HIV/AIDS and violence on the country's children and young people.

HIV/AIDS are having a devastating effect on children in South Africa and continue to be among the biggest challenges facing the country today. Approximately 5.4 million South Africans are living with HIV (14% of the world’s total AIDS population). Over 250,000 of those are young people under the age of 15, with a further 1.5 million children orphaned as a result of AIDS.

The visit enabled Ryan and Chris to see for themselves the kind of work that has been funded by the ‘United for UNICEF’ partnership, which has raised over £2million to date and helped 1.5 million children worldwide.

The players visited the UNICEF-backed Sonke Gender Justice project in the Township of Gugulethu in Cape Town. They spent the afternoon with a group of young people and took part in a lively classroom workshop aimed at tackling the attitudes and behaviours that can lead to HIV infection.

Violence and abuse towards young women and children plays a key role in perpetuating the spread of HIV, with those most vulnerable often children who themselves have lost one or both parents as a result of AIDS related illnesses. The UNICEF backed Sonke Gender Justice programme aims to tackle this issue head on through education. By challenging traditional behaviours, encouraging greater respect for women and educating young people on safe sexual practice, UNICEF is working to give young people the knowledge they need to stem the spread of the virus and prevent new HIV infection.

Foundation Dream Days

As part of our ongoing commitment to charity work, we hold Dream Days throughout the year, for children and young adults with life-limiting diseases.

The days are a dream come true for the young Manchester United fans, many of whom bravely deal with intense pain and discomfort on a day to day basis. Some of the youngsters are terminally ill and meeting the players is a truly uplifting experience for them when they need it most.

The Foundation works closely with ‘wish’ charities such as Rays of Sunshine, Promise Dreams, The Willow Foundation and Dreams Come True, to organise the days. These charities specialise in granting wishes to seriously ill children and young adults.

A typical Dream Day will involve the young people and a family member/carer arriving at Manchester United’s training facilities at Carrington in time to watch the team train. Following this, they meet their heroes and have lunch. The youngsters then have the option of going on to Old Trafford for a museum and stadium tour or this opportunity can be taken at a later date.

We aim to hold at least two or three Dream Days per season.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer leads a Kickz coaching session for the Foundation

Reds legend Ole Gunnar Solskjaer took time out from his busy coaching schedule last week to lead the Manchester United Foundation’s Kickz team through a special training session to prepare them for their match against Blackburn. The former striker also invited the two teams to watch the Manchester United v Espanyol game at Old Trafford afterwards.

Kickz is a Football Foundation project that aims to use the appeal of professional football clubs to create safer, stronger and more respectful communities by developing young peoples potential. Each Premier League club runs Kickz in partnership with the local police aiming to engage disadvantaged young people from the local area and encourage them to move on to volunteer and take qualifications.

The session with Ole will be a reward for the dedicated young people who have attended Kickz sessions in Trafford throughout the year. The team has been picked not just for their football skills but for their behaviour, attitude and attendance. Lee Adams, Kickz Coordinator for the Foundation has identified young people who have shown real improvement and consistency in these areas over the past few months. Young volunteers who have recently moved on to take coaching qualifications through Kickz will also help out on the day.

Since it began approximately 18 months ago, Kickz has significantly contributed to the reduction of crime in the local area with recent figures suggesting that crime is down by 18.5% at the times of Friday night sessions. The free coaching sessions are run at times when anti-social behaviour is at its highest, usually Thursday and Friday nights.

Lee Adams, Kickz Coordinator, Manchester United Foundation explains why Ole’s visit is so important:

“A lot of the lads and girls have grown up in challenging circumstances, but I am really proud of them for the way they have behaved this year. They have all shown great commitment, regularly attending Kickz sessions and working hard to improve their situation.
“Meeting someone like Ole is a dream come true for them, they are all from the local area and many of them are big Manchester United fans. We are really grateful that Ole is giving up his time to come and share a few secrets with them.”

Beckham Lawan Kriminal Berpisau
Kompas.com - 19/8/2008 | 04:41 WIB

http://img.thesun.co.uk/multimedia/archive/00558/SNN1913XX-682_558008a.jpg

Kampanye itu mengambil moto "I Doesn't Have to Happen" atau "Ini tak Perlu Terjadi".

The limited edition book features dog illustrations and stories by 100 children from across the globe, with a selection of those featured being from All Hallows RC Business and Enterprise College in Salford.

It will go on sale for £10 to help the appeal to raise money for parental accommodation and up to date equipment.

Gary Neville attended Booth Hall Children's Hospital as part of the Premier League Creating Chances campaign and said: "I was delighted to be able to present Lucy with her prize.

"Being in hospital as a child must be very unnerving, but it is little things like winning a competition like this that can make all the difference. With the help of the New Children's Hospital Appeal, the new hospital will be something that the whole of Manchester can be very proud of.

"I hope lots of people will buy Harold's book and support the appeal, it is a fantastic cause that will help many children like Lucy in the future. "

Pink Dog

Lucie said: "I'm very excited to win the dog competition with my pink dog called Amelia who likes mashed potato. Drawing the dog was a lot of fun and my brother said that United are the best team but I love my dolly more."

The famous Salford Artist Harold Riley, who was also in attendance, will be hosting a Dog's Dinner in aid of the Appeal on the 15th November to celebrate the launch of the book and exhibition that will take place at Salford Museum and Art Gallery.

The New Children's Hospital Appeal aims to raise £20m to help fund projects within the new children's hospital. The Appeal will focus on two main areas ensuring that the new state-of-the-art buildings have the best equipment available for diagnosis and treatment and providing accommodation so that parents can stay on or close to their child's ward during treatment.

The first-team squad turned out in style for the annual United for UNICEF Gala Dinner, helping to raise over £65,000 for the club's international charity partner.

This year's event had a ‘Champions of Youth’ theme, recognising the important role that young players have played in United's success whilst highlighting the club's long-term commitment to supporting the rights and needs of children and young people worldwide through United For UNICEF.

Funds raised from the Gala Dinner will support UNICEF’s global children and AIDS campaign ‘Unite for Children, Unite against AIDS’. HIV and AIDS are having a devastating impact on young people worldwide. In China, an estimated 200 people are infected with HIV each day; the vast majority of these people are young. Funds raised will help to fund an innovative UNICEF HIV prevention project that will provide young Chinese people with the education and information they need to protect themselves from HIV.

This year's event was hosted by Sky TV’s James Cooper and featured special performances from a range of young talent including Ray Quinn (X Factor 2007 runner-up), who entertained a host of guests including Sir Alex Ferguson, United players past and present and other sporting and showbiz celebrities including cast members from popular TV programmes Coronation Street and Hollyoaks.

A grand auction offered a range of dazzling prizes including a once-in-a-lifetime chance to watch UNICEF Ambassador David Beckham’s LA Galaxy team in action in Los Angeles, whilst a silent auction and raffle gave attendees the chance to win money-can’t-buy prizes whilst supporting UNICEF’s work.

United boss and UNICEF ambassador Sir Alex Ferguson said:

“We at Manchester United are committed to supporting young people. Young people face many great challenges across the world today, but undoubtedly one of the greatest is AIDS. AIDS is having a devastating effect, robbing youngsters of their families, their friends and their future. But there is hope. Our Gala Dinner gives us the chance as a club to show our full support for these young people and raise funds for UNICEF’s vital work to ensure that the young are protected from HIV and AIDS. This event will make a lasting difference to the lives of children worldwide.”

UNICEF UK Executive Director David Bull added:

“Manchester United‘s support for UNICEF and our AIDS campaign is vital for our work. The funds raised by the United for UNICEF Gala Dinner will provide thousands of children in China with the education and information they need to protect themselves and their loved ones from HIV. With this money we will be able to give children the chance of a future.”

Deaf Friendly Footballers
March 05, 2009

http://picsrv.manutd.com/?qlt=100&fif=/manu/1008057.jpg&obj=iip,1.0&wid=415&hei=148&rgn=0.10416666666666667,0.06896551724137931,0.8645 833333333334,0.42528735632183906&cvt=jpeg

Young hearing-impaired football players picked up some top tips from Reds Darren Fletcher and Carling Cup Hero Ben Foster, when the Foundation and the National Deaf Children’s Society held a special training session at the Champions training ground.

It was all part of Premier League Creating Chances and involved young people aged 8-18 from North West schools, who attend regular deaf-friendly football sessions as part of the Foundation’s disability programme.

Darren Fletcher was impressed with the skills on show and picked up a few new skills himself, he said:

‘Ben and I had a good kick around with the kids today - they were a really good bunch and some of them look like they could be destined for big things!’

‘It was really interesting to see how the kids use sign language when they train and I even learnt how to sign my name.”

The aim of deaf-friendly sessions is to encourage youngsters to take up football and develop their confidence. Rob Danson, NDCS Football Development Officer explained why that is so important,

“Deafness makes it harder for children to communicate which can be very isolating. Many deaf children and young people find it difficult to participate in football because clubs may not set up to provide good communication. “

Last year, Sir Alex Ferguson signed up to the NCDS Deaf Friendly Football Club Pledge (DFFC) on behalf of Manchester United and the Foundation. The DFFC project is opening up football opportunities to deaf children across the UK.

The sessions are definitely having the desired affect, with two of the youngsters who attend now playing for the mainstream Girls team. Athena Preston said: “It was great to meet first team players, I love football - it’s my favourite thing to do and I am really enjoying playing for Manchester United.”

Rio Kickz Out Violence
James Marshall - March 05, 2009

Manchester United star Rio Ferdinand took time out last week to visit Old Trafford Sports Barn to promote the Foundation’s Kickz project.

Rio attended an event called Your Voice - Your Goals, which was hosted by Kickz and Trafford Council and aimed to tackle violence in Trafford and break down barriers between young people, the Police and other government agencies. The event also showcased the positive services available to young people in the area.

Rio took part in a Q&A session with a selected panel of guests, which included local musician Fabian Wilks, community worker Joe Malaika, police officers from Manchester’s XCalibre Taskforce and Kickz project coordinator Lee Adams.

England international Rio told the 60 teenagers who were in attendance about his experiences growing up and advised them on achieving future goals. He said: “My advice to people here tonight is to decide what your goal in life is, and work towards it as you can achieve anything you want in life if you put your mind to it.”

The Foundation's Kickz project was set up in the autumn of 2006 to build relationships between key partners in the community and engage youngsters and encourage them to talk about their role in tackling crime. Kickz is aimed at encouraging youngsters between the ages of 12-19, who live in the areas where crime figures are high to take part in sports. The Kickz project runs football and sports sessions at times when anti-social behaviour is at its highest and is delivered by the Foundation in partnership with the Football Foundation, Greater Manchester Police and Trafford Council.

Project coordinator Lee Adams said: “Everything you hear about young people at the moment is negative but Kickz has had a massive effect in this area. Crime has dropped dramatically since the project has started and the whole community has seen a positive improvement in the area.”

Lee is supported by volunteers who help coach the children, building up their confidence and encouraging them to take part in different activities in the area.

Chief Executive of Manchester United Foundation John Shiels said: “Kickz has been fantastic for this area in recent years it has encouraged youngsters to take part in sport and a big thank you must go out to Lee and his team who have been brilliant in helping hundreds of youngsters achieve their goals.”

Duo Manchester Sejalan demi Derma

http://images.mirror.co.uk/upl/m4/nov2008/5/0/E1F7697A-A2AF-8DB8-05DC4D5789F60A1E.jpg

Becks and Andy’s battle against malaria

http://img.thesun.co.uk/multimedia/archive/00785/SNF2112B_280_785922a.jpg

IT WAS one England versus Scotland game at Wembley where both opponents had the same goal.

Soccer legend David Beckham and British tennis No1 Andy Murray took each other on at their rival sports at the home of English football yesterday to launch new charity Malaria No More UK.

Today, 33-year-old Becks — England’s most capped outfield player — writes an exclusive and moving piece for The Sun about his desire to stamp out the global menace of malaria.

It strikes down as many as 250million people a year, killing more than a million, with one African child dying of the disease every 30 seconds.

Among the survivors is 12-month-old Kenyan baby Maxwell Ochieng, who recovered thanks to life-saving drugs.

Yet malaria is entirely preventable — and the key to avoiding it is a life-saving bed net to protect from the mosquitoes which carry the malaria parasite.

One net costs just £5. Our pictures show the two sporting heroes knocking up over the world’s longest tennis net — a 74 yard blue malaria bed net.

Afterwards Andy told Becks: “I’m very surprised at your tennis skills.”

They then lofted free kicks into a goal which was also made of bed nets and Becks told Hibernian fan Andy: “I’ve heard about your football skills. I’m still kind of surprised. Your free kicks were good.”

Later the pair joined Olympic heptathlon gold medallist Denise Lewis in Downing Street — where another bed net was draped over the iconic No10 door — and they met Prime Minister Gordon Brown, who also writes in The Sun today, detailing Britain’s efforts to defeat malaria.

The Sun began our campaign against malaria back in 2007 with a visit to Nigeria with hammer attack victim Josie Russell. Big-hearted Sun readers donated £50,000 for life-saving nets.

Last night Malaria No More UK executive director Sarah Kline said: “We’re opening here because the UK is home to political, corporate, academic and medical leaders in the fight against malaria.

“Our immediate goal is ensuring that every person who needs a net in Africa has access to one by the end of 2010.”

You can make a life- saving donation – or find out how you can do more to back the campaign – at malarianomore.org.uk.

“WHEN I step out on to the pitch at Wembley Stadium there can be up to 90,000 people watching me and the England team. That’s a lot of people.

“But that’s the same number of children who die in Africa from malaria every month — a whole football stadium of lost young lives.

“But we are in a position to save these lives. By sleeping under a simple mosquito net a child can be protected against malaria.

“I saw first-hand last year just how crucial these bed nets are.

“I went to Sierra Leone with UNICEF and saw families devastated by malaria and other diseases.

“There, one in four children die before their fifth birthday.

“I visited health clinics and learnt why people die so young. And sadly I saw that it’s mainly from preventable diseases such as malaria. These heartbreaking facts made me back the new charity Malaria No More UK.

“Malaria is the biggest killer of children in the world, with a child dying every 30 seconds.

“And there are around 250million cases of malaria worldwide. But what most people don’t realise is that malaria is preventable. These kids can be saved.

“Malaria No More UK wants to get bed nets to everyone in Africa who needs one by the end of 2010.

“It’s an ambitious goal — but it can be achieved if we all get behind it.

“For just £5 you can buy a mosquito net, which will protect a mother and child, or brother and sister, for up to five years. As a dad of three myself I want to do everything possible to help these kids.

“It’s time for Britain to get involved. Never have we had such an opportunity to really make a difference as a generation.

“I’ll never forget how fragile those children I met in Africa were and to know how fleeting some of their lives could be.

In net together ... Gordon Brown with Andy, David
and Denise Lewis at Number 10

“But it doesn’t have to be that way. Please help us. Buy a net, save a life. It really is that simple.

“Get behind the campaign and together we really can make malaria no more.”

David and fellow sports heroes Andy Murray and Denise Lewis have all been named as members of the Malaria No More UK Leadership Council.

Andy, 21, said: “I’d love to go to Africa at some point.

“This is the first global charity I’ve been involved with in this capacity and it was an easy decision.

“You can send one of the blue nets over to Africa and protect a family for up to five years.”

Denise, 36, who is a special guest on Jon Gaunt’s SunTalk show this morning, said: “As a mother of three, finding out that pregnant women are four times more likely to contract malaria than other adults — well, that really hits home.”

Last night Tory leader David Cameron said: “We have the power to wipe malaria out, just like we eradicated smallpox 30 years ago.

“The launch of Malaria No More UK gives us all an opportunity to redouble our efforts and make it happen.”

Giggs backs Hospice walk

http://picsrv.manutd.com/?fif=/manu/img_10_29627_5792.jpg&obj=iip,1.0&wid=240&hei=359&rgn=0.155,0.05952380952380952,0.6,0.71230158730158 72&cvt=jpeg

Ryan Giggs recently took time out to lend his support to a special Midnight Walk in aid of the East Cheshire Hospice.

The United midfielder, who is a patron for the charity, met hospice patients and staff at the launch of the event which takes place on Saturday 12 September 2009 starting at midnight. The 10k roundtrip walk will begin at Macclesfield Leisure Centre and pass through Prestbury and Tytherington.

Last year's walk raised over £72,000 and Giggs is urging people to get involved and help generate even more funds for the charity.

"The £72,000 raised last year went towards the cost of Phase 1 of the fantastic new development at the hospice which I was very proud to officially open a few weeks ago," said Ryan. "I’d encourage everyone to get their boots on this year to raise even more money."

Over 570 people took part in the 2008 walk and the charity are hoping to hit the 1000 mark this time round with the aim of raising in excess of £100,000.

"Fancy dress is very much encouraged and there will be a prize for the best outfit. We want to make it a real party atmosphere," added Chief Executive Jayne Bessant.

Cancer girl Leanne in United challenge
7:50am Friday 21st August 2009

A TEENAGE cancer patient is preparing to abseil 140ft from the top of Manchester United’s famous Old Trafford stadium.

Leanne Parker, aged 19, is taking on the challenge to raise money for the hospital that is fighting to save her life.

She was diagnosed with leukaemia in May and is now in remission, although she still has monthly chemotherapy.

Now Leanne has decided to try to raise plenty of cash for The Christie, in Manchester, where she is being treated.

Leanne, of Breightmet, is gearing up to abseil from the North Stand on to the pitch on Saturday, September 5.

She is no stranger to the club after stars Cristiano Ronaldo, Ryan Giggs, Anderson, Nani and Manucho visited her in hospital last December.

Leanne, who is a Bury College student, said: “Ronaldo was even more gorgeous in the flesh and it’s brilliant that I’ll be abseiling on to the very pitch that he’s played on.

“I’m excited about doing this, it’ll be scary but exhilarating.

“I hope to raise as much as possible for The Christie.”

She added: “When I was told I had cancer, I was shell-shocked. You don’t associate the disease with people my age, so it was a very upsetting time.

“Right away staff at The Christie made me and my family feel so positive and the care I received was top class.

“It’s like a home away from home — you don’t feel like you’re in a hospital.

“I feel so lucky that I’ve now come out of the other side.

“Although I’m still having treatment to keep the cancer at bay, I feel extremely hopeful about the future.”

There are still places left for the abseil event and all the money raised will help provide extra rehabilitation for young cancer patients.

The Christie’s award-winning teenage cancer unit is one of 10 dedicated units in the country providing specialist care and facilities for young people between 16 and 24 years old. It treats about 130 new patients a year.

Anyone wanting to do the abseil challenge, raising a minimum of £140, should contact 0161 446 3400 or visit christies.org

Charity volunteer signs for United

Kyle O'Connor met some of the Man Utd players at Old Trafford

A volunteer who works with disadvantaged young people in Trafford has been employed with Manchester United.

Kyle O'Connor celebrated his new role in style by meeting members of the Manchester United first team on the Old Trafford pitch.

The 17-year-old from Trafford was invited to the Theatre of Dreams to meet some of the first team players including Nani, Rafael and Fabio and new signings Antonio Valencia and Gabriel Obertan.

Kyle volunteers with the Manchester United Foundation's Kickz project and is the first young volunteer to progress from an attendee at a session through all the steps in the Kickz programme to gain employment with the club. Kyle will be employed as a football coach at the project, in charge of developing the junior sessions on Friday evenings.

attending sessions

Manchester United Foundation has been running Kickz in Trafford since September 2006. Kickz aims to use the power of football and the appeal of the professional club brands to target some of the more hard to reach and challenging communities. The project aims to create safer, stronger and more respectful communities by developing young people's potential.

Kickz sessions are held three nights a week less than 10 minutes walk from the home of Manchester United. It is run at times when anti-social behaviour is at its highest, with over 400 young people regularly attending sessions. Young people attending are encouraged to volunteer and often move on to take coaching qualifications. Manchester United Kickz has been going from strength to strength with a new project opening in Salford in the next few months.

Kyle has volunteered with the Foundation for around two years, and during this time has taken his Level 1 coaching badge with the Foundation. He will be progressing to Level 2 in the near future to enhance his coaching skills and techniques.

real success

Kickz Co-ordinator Lee Adams said: "Kyle is a real success story for us. The purpose of Kickz is really to get young people off the street and offer them positive activity with positive outcomes.

"We aim to encourage young people to volunteer, take qualifications and improve their career opportunities. Kyle has been really dedicated over the past few years and I am now proud to be able to ask him to represent Manchester United as a junior coach."

Kyle said: "It is an exciting opportunity. I am grateful for all the guidance and support I have received from Manchester United Foundation's Kickz team. It has been a phenomenal day meeting the players - a dream come true - and I am looking forward to my future because of this opportunity. I hope as a role model I can inspire more young people on the Kickz programme to achieve their potential."

Ben backs Foundation scheme

Young Reds' goalkeeper Ben Amos and former England defender Martin Keown met a group of local children at Old Trafford recently to promote an innovative new healthy eating game created as part of BT and the Football Foundation’s 'Communicating for Success' programme.

The youngsters used a range of exciting new IT and design skills they had developed as part of the innovative scheme – combined with fitness awareness workshops - to produce the series of high quality, colourful, children’s card games and activity planners.

The 'Communicating for Success' initiative, a £1million UK-wide programme, uses the positive influence of football to help combat digital exclusion and improve communication skills across the UK.

The children, from Forest Gate Community Primary, Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Primary and Partington Primary Schools, worked on the “Deal Yourself an Active Digital Diary” project which is being run by the Manchester United Foundation at Broadoak High School and the Study Support Centre at Old Trafford as well as at the participating schools.

Amos was happy to lend his support to the scheme and was very impressed by the children's design work.

"It’s always important for kids to learn things at an early age and get into good habits. The leaflets they’ve designed are brilliant and they’ve all no doubt had great fun creating them," he told ManUtd.com.

Neil Bradburn, centre manager for the Manchester United Foundation Study Support Centre, added: “Harnessing the power of football and the privileged position the sport has in our society, this innovative project will encourage young people to lead healthy, fulfilling lives.”

Something to Chew On - A Healthy Eating Programme For Children Launched By FSA and Premiership Footballers
Source: Food Standards Agency
Published Wednesday, 30 September, 2009 - 09:23

Manchester United goalkeeper Edwin Van der Sar has officially launched a project, in partnership with the Food Standards Agency (FSA), to encourage schoolchildren to eat healthily and live a more balanced lifestyle.

Local schoolchildren, teachers, FSA representatives and some famous faces from the world of football attended the launch at the Old Trafford stadium. The project, called Something to Chew On, uses Manchester United players to teach primary school children about being healthy. The Manchester United Foundation has received the funding to develop the project over three years and will work in partnership with the FSA, local and regional healthy schools teams, and local authorities.

Each school in which the Foundation delivers Something to Chew On will receive a full teacher resource pack so that the project will be sustainable for future pupils.

Something to Chew On, which is funded by the FSA and the Premier League/Professional Footballers' Association Community Fund, was piloted in Salford schools last year. The programme uses an interactive approach to teaching children about keeping healthy and covers food, nutrition and getting active, but with a football focus. Topics, based on the Agency’s food competency framework, include: diet and health, food safety, consumer awareness and food preparation. As well as classroom sessions, there are practical sessions that cover football, fitness and controlling body movement to motivate children to be active.

Edwin Van der Sar, Manchester United First Team goalkeeper, said: 'Aspiring to have and maintaining a balanced lifestyle for children and families is a message that is very important to me. Every day I get up with my kids and we eat breakfast together. I will usually have some sandwiches and my kids might have cereal.

‘I have been impressed with the Something to Chew On programme and I’m very pleased to be so involved.’

Rosemary Hignett, Head of Nutrition at the Agency, said: 'Learning how to choose, cook and eat safe, healthy food from a young age is an invaluable tool and we are delighted to be involved in this excellent programme. As well as gaining essential food skills, young people will be given the opportunity to get active through football.

'The skills young people will develop through these activities will both be fun and interesting, but more importantly they will hopefully have a positive and lasting impact through to their adult lives.'

Something to Chew On will be rolled out across Manchester, Trafford and Salford with a view to going national next year.

Ambassador Giggs in Sierra Leone
News item 14 October 2009

http://www.unicef.org.uk/press/images/standard/ryans.jpg
Part of one of the HIV prevention posters used by UNICEF in Sierra Leone.

In October 2009, UNICEF Ambassador Ryan Giggs visited Sierra Leone to highlight the importance of HIV prevention in combating the spread of the disease amongst young people, as part of UNICEF UK’s new ‘Live Free from HIV’ campaign.

The visit also gave Giggs the chance to see a unique HIV prevention advertising campaign that used famous footballers including Giggs himself, to give life-saving messages to Sierra Leone’s young people.

In 2008, Manchester United stars Ryan Giggs, Rio Ferdinand and Patrice Evra joined forces with UNICEF to front a new AIDS awareness advertising campaign in Sierra Leone.

The ad campaign, launched in July 2008, is running nationwide across TV, radio and billboards in each of the country’s 13 districts and promotes HIV and AIDS prevention amongst three million young people.

Young people in Sierra Leone are at increasing risk of HIV and AIDS. Although the number of people living with HIV stands at 1.5 per cent, since 2002 the country has seen a 75 per cent increase in all new HIV infections. Despite this amongst youngsters as few as 17 per cent understand how to protect themselves against the virus.

With low awareness of the dangers, and infection rates rapidly rising, the need to reach young people with accurate information to encourage them to change their sexual behaviour is vital.

The new Manchester United advertising campaign, targets those at greatest risk - over three million young people - by tapping into football’s huge nationwide popularity. In Sierra Leone football stars such as Ryan Giggs, Rio Ferdinand and Patrice Evra enjoy an unrivalled high profile and are instantly recognised as role models by millions of young people. International teams such as Manchester United receive fervent and widespread support – team colours are often proudly displayed from cars, houses and taxis. Big international club matches are avidly followed by young people who often pay a small fee to watch or listen to the games.

Recognising this popularity and the power of football to reach the country’s young, the ad campaign features each player delivering a unique HIV and AIDS prevention message. Each message has been developed and pre-tested at grassroots level by young people in Sierra Leone and will focus on three key themes:

Stigma: “AIDS destroys your health and kills, but so can the stigma of HIV. Stop blaming others! Stigma on HIV spreads the disease.”
Encouraging safe sexual practice: “Keeping my body fit and healthy is vital for my game. AIDS destroys a healthy body. Keep yourself healthy and protect your loved ones. Use a condom. Only you can stop AIDS.”
Getting tested: “AIDS destroys your health and kills. Knowing your HIV status will help you protect your health and that of your loved ones. Get tested for HIV – Now! Know your HIV status and live a healthy life.”

Recorded on site at the clubs Carrington training ground, the ad campaign marked an important stage in Manchester United’s 10-year partnership with UNICEF - ‘United for UNICEF’ and their commitment to combating HIV and AIDS.

Ferguson joins fight against cancer
Red Ranter 15 October 2009 @ 22:40

I was contacted by the folks at Killing Cancer. A charity to help promote the use and development of a little known cancer treatment — PDT.

The club has also been involved in this and will send out brochures to season ticket holders. But either case, it’s always better to reach out to a wider, more global audience as well. So I thought it would be just as well great to promote this initiative on the site.

More importantly, Sir Alex Ferguson has joined this and has sent out an open letter to everyone. The PDF containing the letter can be downloaded here, but I thought I would anyway paste it here for the benefit of those not able to open the file:

I was looking around Old Trafford the other day, and it dawned on me: ‘One in three of these magnificent fans will die from cancer.’ The North Stand would be empty. My Mum and Dad both died from lung cancer – my Dad had colon cancer, too. My brother, Martin, has thankfully recovered from prostate cancer. Cancer could get me .. or you. The thought of any cancer fills me with dread. Lung cancer. Stomach. Bladder. Pancreatic. What about mouth or throat cancer? I know how much the surgeon would rip out if that was to be my fate. What about brain tumours? The chemo, radiotherapy and surgery treatments can seem worse than living with and having the cancer.

Two years ago everyone in the club was searching for a cancer cure that could help Dave Rennison – a ‘Gentle Giant’ of a man so well known to everyone at the club. He had pancreatic cancer. Eight thousand people die of this cancer every year. Few survive.
When we came across a new type of treatment with no chemical poisoning, all of us hoped that Dave would be able to have it – Photodynamic Therapy.

PDT is killing some cancers now with a single treatment that takes just minutes, and with few major side-effects. A light-sensitive drug is activated in the tumour by light with pin-point accuracy. It knocks out the oxygen supply to the tumour just long enough to kill it. It’s approved and available now on the NHS for skin, head and neck cancers, mouth cancers and cancers in the oesophagus.

PDT is treating patients now in trials for prostate, bile duct and early lung cancer. Breast cancer is another target where they hope half of all patients will be able to avoid having a mastectomy with PDT. The Christie in Manchester is a leading centre for vulval and penile cancer PDT.

But all these trials are desperately short of funds. The PDT trial for arterial and heart disease was stopped years ago. The work on bladder, stomach, colon and several others have never even started. Sadly for Dave, the medical teams haven’t had the money to develop this amazing therapy for pancreatic cancer.

I wish that PDT had been available for Dave and my parents. We can’t change the past, but we can change the future. If one million Manchester United fans all donated £10, the medics could maybe get PDT approved and in use for pancreatic, throat, breast and lung cancer.

To donate, please click on the KILLING Cancer logo [in the PDF] to go to the charity’s website, or post your donation to the address below. We can make the difference. We can create one of the most successful, winning teams – this one dedicated to defeating cancer. I’ve made my donation. Please join me.

Alex Ferguson.

In just four weeks' time, I’ll be heading to the Sahara desert with my sleeping bag, walking boots and backpack, ready to tackle sand dunes aplenty all in the name of charity.

Myself and 22 fellow trekkers, including former United players Denis Irwin and Andy Ritchie, will be raising money for the Manchester United Foundation during a week-long excursion and I'll be giving ManUtd.com readers an insight into the experience along the way.

The trek is the brainchild of MUTV presenter Mandy Henry. A special documentary will be screened on the club channel in December.

The expedition will take the group through some challenging environments in which we'll scale peaks and walk through gorges, alongside dry riverbeds and across sandy plains. Most days will consist of at least six hours' walking (in 30 degree heat!), but there will be time to explore the landscape, visit nomadic caves and meet some desert inhabitants.

The trip promises to be a tough, yet extremely exciting adventure, and it's certainly for a great cause.

Star trekking

Day 1 – Flight to Ouarzazate, Morocco
Day 2 – Walk along Draa Valley (2 hours walking)
Day 3 – Walk across Maider El Kbir Plateau (6 hours walking)
Day 4 – Climb Jebel Lamrakeb and transverse down O’Hare Gorge (7 hours of walking)
Day 5 – Trek by the Rhris River (6 hours walking)
Day 6 – Traverse the dunes of Boulaadam (6 hours walking)
Day 7 – Walk along the Tikertouachene River (3 hours walking)
Day 8 – Flight home to Manchester, UK

WORLD AIDS DAY - RYAN GIGGS JOINS THE FIGHT AGAINST HIV

Tomorrow (Tuesday 1 December) countries all over the world will take part in the 21st World Aids Day. To mark the day, the Foundation is giving Community Reds readers this chance to read about Ryan Giggs' recent visit to Sierra Leone.

In 2007, Ryan and his team-mates Patrice Evra and Rio Ferdinand fronted UNICEF's campaign to raise awareness about HIV in Sierra Leone. Ryan's trip in October enabled him to see first hand what kind of impact the campaign has had. “The main purpose of my trip was to help educate young people in Sierra Leone and give them the knowledge to prevent the spread of HIV,” says Ryan.

Ryan visited various sites on an intensive two-day trip, including a health centre in Binkolo where he learned about the challenges in child survival and measures that can be taken to prevent HIV being passed from a mother to her baby.

“I saw a woman giving birth in the same room where an antenatal class was taking place,” says Ryan. “Hopefully people will continue to help and donate money to UNICEF, in order to give much-needed funds to places like the health centre.”

United for UNICEF manager Alex Lee says the campaign is proving successful. "Since we started it in Sierra Leone, belief that HIV exists has increased by 24%. These figures demonstrate how valuable our relationship with the club is. With United’s help, and the public’s support, we can really make a difference.”

Children from Rackhouse, St. Wilfred's, Northenden, Sandilands and Button Lane Primary schools played in a six-a-side tournament and showed off their skills to the Premier League star. The children will attend the Manchester Health Academy in September.

The visit was to highlight the Manchester United Foundation's involvement with the school and was part of Premier League Places for Players. As part of this initiative the Premier League has donated £20,000, which has been used to buy sporting equipment at the school.

Educating Children

The Manchester United Foundation was approached by Health Academy Principal Barry Burke around 18 months ago, to assist in educating children from the local area about the new ethos of the school. Manchester United Foundation now has a full time Football Development Officer based at the school as part of its hub-of-the-community project. Dave Chapman's specific remit was to work with the five local feeder primary schools and encourage them to continue their education at the Academy.

Barry Burke said: "Helping us was a big risk for the Foundation and we are extremely thankful to John Shiels (chief executive) for putting his reputation on the line to assist us. It was a risk that really paid off. I am pleased to say that our school admissions are full for next year."

The Health Academy has gone from a school which had around 17 pupils apply, to full capacity in just 18 months.

Local Community

Dave Chapman, Football Development Officer said: "There were children here at first who weren't interested in the sport, but because we are here all the time they have become more and more involved with what we are doing.

"It is nice, as a coach, to be able to build relationships with the local community, and as a result we have managed to achieve our objective of more pupils applying to the school."

Nemanja Vidic said: "I have been really impressed with what I have seen at the Health Academy today, there are great facilities here for the kids and the United coaches are making a real difference in the community.

"I think football can really capture people's interest and if an organisation has the backing of Manchester United, people know it will be a good facility."

Soccer Aid
Old Trafford, Sunday 6 June
Englanf VS Rest of The World

Manchester United and England striker Wayne Rooney gives his support to Soccer Aid on 6 June.

Speaking ahead of this Summer's World Cup Finals Rooney said; "This weekend Soccer Aid is back at Old Trafford with all profits raised going to the Unicef projects around the world, including their Haiti appeal.

"I'm sure all of us remember the terrible pictures we saw on television immediately after the earthquake hit - the images remain with me to this day - and that is why I hope everyone can help by supporting Soccer Aid this coming Sunday.

"Either buy a ticket and attend the match and see some of the greatest players of recent times accompanied by some of my favourite celebrities, or watch it live on ITV 1 on Sunday 6 June and make a donation either over the phone or online. Remember no matter how small or large the donation it will go a long way towards improving the daily lives of children all over the world.

"Enjoy the game and let's hope the Robbie Williams' England Team can give us a boost by winning the match."

Wayne's World and Austin Powers star Mike Myers, Academy Award nominee Woody Harrelson and Australian-born actor Simon Baker will be in the Rest of the World squad, taking on an England side featuring Robbie Williams and ex-internationals Alan Shearer, David Seaman, Teddy Sheringham and Jamie Redknapp.

The Rest of the World team will also feature actor Michael Sheen, chef Gordon Ramsay, TV presenter Gethin Jones, comedian Patrick Kielty, Westlife members Shane Filan and Nicky Byrne, cricketing legend Brian Lara, boxing champion Joe Calzaghe and Heroes star James Kyson-Lee. The celebrities will be joined by football legends including Zinedine Zidane, Jens Lehmann, Henrik Larsson and Ryan Giggs. Kenny Dalglish will coach the super squad with the help of Ian Rush.

England's squad includes GMTV presenter Ben Shephard, actor and TV presenter Bradley Walsh, presenter and DJ Jamie Theakston, boxing hero Ricky Hatton, and actor Damian Lewis. Comic genius James Corden will be the assistant manager.

BIG DAY: Lee Sharpe, centre, with cancer patients Brendan Lysaght, Nichole Bain, Amy Dutton, from Radcliffe, and Sean Littlewood

A CANCER patient saw her dreams come true when she visited Manchester United.

Amy Dutton, from Radcliffe, who was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma last year, took part in football training and other games with former player Lee Sharpe.

She took part in a penalty shoot-out with the ex-United hotshot and was given a tour of the Old Trafford ground and museum.

Amy, aged 24, said: “Days like this are amazing. Seeing everyone with smiles on their faces is brilliant and, as a Manchester United fan, being on the pitch is a dream come true.”

The visit was organised for cancer patients at The Christie and their families as part of the hospital’s partnership with the football club.

Mr Sharpe, who recently set up the Lee Sharpe Foundation which supports The Christie, said; “I know what an incredible feeling scoring a goal at Old Trafford is, so it is fantastic these young cancer patients have been given this opportunity.

“It was a pleasure to meet these inspirational youngsters — and I’m sure they thoroughly enjoyed scoring a goal or two past me.”

Paul Scholes, Ryan Giggs, Darren Fletcher and Edwin van der Sar are taking part in the Hublot Million Dollar Challenge, in which they'll try to hit a target masked as a giant Hublot watch from 51 feet, hoping to raise valuable funds for a great cause.

United are currently on tour in the US and Canada, but will make a stop in the Big Apple for the event, which is open to the public and takes place between the iconic Flatiron and Empire State buildings on 23rd Street and Broadway.

The United players will be wearing their shooting boots, but regardless of whether the men in red can hit a bullseye, Hublot has promised to make a significant contribution to the excellent work carried out by the Reds' charity partner UNICEF.

"Our relationship with Manchester United is very special," says Hublot CEO Jean-Claude Biver. "We love getting creative to organise unique experiences, such as the Million Dollar Challenge, to support United for UNICEF."

"We are very excited to participate in the Hublot Million Dollar Challenge," says Manchester United Foundation chief executive John Shiels. "The event will be a unique opportunity to bring people together to raise funds for United for UNICEF, while also having a great time."
