Gibraltar make competitive debut against Poland, ‘actual occupations’ team graphic is absolutely brilliant

They say there’s no easy games at international level, but when you’re coming up against a fireman, an admin clerk and a shipping agent, a few eyebrows are invariably raised.

http://i178.photobucket.com/albums/w257/bu7che/album%20sept/gibraltar_zpsbe08ae81.jpg (http://s178.photobucket.com/user/bu7che/media/album%20sept/gibraltar_zpsbe08ae81.jpg.html)

That’s exactly the situation which Poland found themselves in tonight in their Euro 2016 qualifier with Gibraltar, who were making their competitive debut in international football.

With a population of only 30,000, it’s no surprise that only two of the starting XI were professional footballers.

So penny for the thoughts of Bristol Rovers’ Jake Gosling, who could only make the bench…

Van Persie and Blind play in Netherlands win

Manchester United striker Robin van Persie won and netted a late penalty as the Netherlands avoided a shock by beating Kazahkstan 3-1 in their European Championship qualifier on Friday night.

Skipper van Persie went close on several occasions at Amsterdam ArenA before finally getting on the scoresheet as Guus Hiddink’s side, for whom Daley Blind also played 90 minutes at left-back, came from behind to overcome their lowly opponents.

Either side of Renat Abdulin’s shock headed opener in the 12th minute for Kazahkstan, ranked 127th in the world, van Persie had an effort disallowed for offside, flicked a header onto the roof of the net and saw a close-range shot saved.

The frontman fired another good chance wide from a narrow angle after the break, before substitute Klaas-Jan Huntelaar finally made the breakthrough just after the hour mark.

Baurzhan Dzholchiev was then sent off for an ill-judged tackle and the Dutch took advantage through Ibrahim Afellay's strike, before van Persie made the game safe from the spot – his 48th international goal – after being brought down in the box.

It was a vital three points for the Netherlands after they had lost their Group A opener to the Czech Republic last month.

Marouane Fellaini came off the bench in the second half of Belgium’s 6-0 thrashing of minnows Andorra in Group B, while Adnan Januzaj was an unused substitute.

The Red Devils were already 4-0 up, courtesy of goals from Kevin De Bruyne (2), Nacer Chadli and Divock Origi, when United midfielder Fellaini entered the fray. Dries Mertens added a late double to seal a comfortable victory for Marc Wilmots in their opening qualifier.

Luke Shaw played throughout as England Under-21s came from behind to beat Croatia 2-1 in their European Championship play-off tie at Wolves’ Molineux ground.

Shaw, recovered from the knee injury that forced him off towards the end of United’s win over Everton last week, hit the post in the first half after driving in from the left.

Marko Livaja headed the visitors into an early lead but Harry Kane’s header and Saido Berahino’s late penalty gave Gareth Southgate’s side victory. The return leg is in Vinkovci on Tuesday.

Armenia 2-3 Portugal: Cristiano Ronaldo scores his third hat-trick in three games to complete comeback victory

Marcos Pizzelli's free-kick gave Armenia an unlikely lead after 14 minutes
Cristiano Ronaldo levelled from the penalty spot a quarter of an hour later
Ronaldo completed the turnaround when he pounced on defensive mix-up
Real Madrid man sealed his hat-trick with vicious 25-yard pile driver
Former Chelsea man Tiago was sent-off for a second bookable offence
Hrayr Mkoyan pounced to halve the deficit with 18 minutes remaining

Cristiano Ronaldo completed his third straight hat-trick in as many games for club and country as Portugal came from behind to defeat Armenia in the Euro 2016 Group I qualifier in Yerevan.

Armenia took the lead when Brazilian-born Marcos Pizzelli unleashed an unstoppable free-kick from 35 yards which flew past Rui Patricio and in off the underside of the crossbar after 14 minutes.

The hosts' lead lasted less than quarter of an hour as Ronaldo calmly sent goalkeeper Roman Berezovski the wrong way after Joao Moutinho had been brought down inside the box by Henrikh Mkhitaryan.

The 30-year-old was in devastating form once more for Portugal after another prolific season for Real Madrid

Ronaldo completed the turnaround 10 minutes into the second half, as the Real Madrid forward nipped in between Berezovski and defender Robert Arzumanyan to flick the ball into the net.

And the World footballer of the year showed his star pedigree just shy of the hour-mark, pouncing on a loose clearance before unleashing a vicious 25-yard finish into the top corner to seal his hat-trick.

Former Chelsea midfielder Tiago was sent-off for a second bookable offence with 28 minutes remaining, and Armenia were given hope of snatching a draw 10 minutes later when Hrayr Mkoyan capitalized on a spill by Patricio from two yards out.

But the Portuguese were able to hold out for the win to extend their lead at the top of Group I, ahead of Denmark's clash with Serbia later on Saturday.

Portugal, who have often struggled with qualifying for major competitions in recent years, next face Albania away in early September, while Armenia will host Denmark on the same evening still hoping to record their first win of the campaign.

Russia 0-1 Austria: Marc Janko's acrobatics put Euro 2016 qualification firmly in Das Team's hands

Marc Janko seized on defensive mix-up to stun Russia with acrobatic strike
Austria top Group F with 16 points, eight clear of third-placed Russia
Austrians are seven points clear of Sweden who are second in the group
Russia coach Fabio Capello's qualification hopes dealt a blow in Moscow

Marc Janko scored with a spectacular overhead kick Sunday as Austria maintained its grip on European Championship qualifying Group G with a 1-0 away win over Russia.

Second-placed Sweden beat Montenegro 3-1 with Zlatan Ibrahimovic scoring two goals.

Janko's winner came in the 33rd minute after Russia's Denis Glushakov blocked two attempts by Zlatko Junozovic inside the penalty area.

Russia's goalkeeper Igor Akinfeev was powerless to prevent Janko's sublime effort at the Otkrytie Arena

The rebound rose high and Janko timed his jump perfectly to score with his back to goal.

Julian Baumgartlinger missed a chance to make it 2-0 for Austria when he shot wide with only the goalkeeper to beat.

After a poor first half, Russia improved in the second, testing Austria goalkeeper Robert Almer with a series of attempts. Aleksandr Kerzhakov headed wide in the 88th and Russia failed to mount any pressure in injury time.

The result means Austria remains undefeated in the group with 16 points, eight clear of Russia, which is third.

Coach Fabio Capello's team has only won two of its last 10 competitive matches, including a win by default due to crowd trouble in Montenegro.

Sweden moved up to 12 points after three goals within six minutes gave Erik Hamren's side a 3-0 halftime lead against the Montenegrins.

At the bottom of the group table, Liechtenstein and Moldova drew 1-1 in Vaduz.

Sandro Wieser gave the home team the lead with a powerful long-range strike after 20 minutes but Moldova's Georghe Boghiu equalized before halftime after a pass from Nicolae Milinceanu.

Ukraine 3-0 Luxembourg: Stoke City target Yevhen Konoplyanka scores in qualifier win

Denys Germash added a second eight minutes later from close range
Yevhen Konoplyanka made it 3-0 on 86 minutes with a low shot
Ukraine now have 12 points in Group C, while Luxembourg remain bottom

Ukraine had to work hard to crack open a determined Luxembourg defence but three second-half goals secured a 3-0 win at the Lviv Arena in their Euro 2016 Group C qualifier on Sunday.

Ukraine were whistled by their own fans near the end of the first period but responded after the restart with goals from Artem Kravetsk, Denys Germash and Stoke City target Yevhen Konoplyanka.

The win move Ukraine level on 12 points with European champions Spain, who visit Belarus later on Sunday, and three points behind group leaders Slovakia who host Macedonia.

Bottom side Luxembourg almost scored after 10 minutes when winger Daniel Da Mota hit the post with only goalkeeper Andriy Pyatov to beat after evading Mykola Morozyuk's sliding tackle.

Ukraine's Taras Stepanenko headed over the bar from close range a few minutes earlier and later Konoplyanka applied a poor finish inside the penalty area to a neat Andriy Yarmolenko pass.

However, Ukraine finally took the lead four minutes into the second half when striker Artem chested the ball into the net after Kravetsk Morozyuk curled over a cross from the right.

Sweden 3-1 Montenegro: Zlatan Ibrahimovic at the double to inspire crucial victory

Marcus Berg opened the scoring for the home side after 38 minutes
Zlatan Ibrahimovic fired in two quick-fire goals before half-time
Montenegro pulled one back with a 64th minute Dejan Damjanovic penalty
Sweden remain second in Euro 2016 qualifying Group G behind Austria

Two Zlatan Ibrahimovic strikes formed part of a three-goal burst just before halftime that gave Sweden a 3-1 win over a feisty Montenegro in their Group G Euro 2016 qualifier at the Friends Arena on Sunday.

The result means Sweden stay in second on 12 points, four points behind leaders Austria, who beat third-placed Russia 1-0 in Moscow.

The home side took the lead in the 38th minute after Ibrahimovic drifted out to feed Sebastian Larsson, who set Albin Ekdal free down the right and his pinpoint cross was firmly headed home by Marcus Berg.

Two minutes later it was Ibrahimovic's turn, collecting a throw-in on the left before cutting inside and thumping a shot from distance past Vukasin Poleksic, whose poorly-timed dive saw the ball squirm under his body.

Ibrahimovic netted his 56th goal for his country a minute before half-time, latching on to Larsson's long ball before coolly dispatching it past the helpless goalkeeper.

Dejan Damjanovic pulled a goal back for Montenegro midway through the second-half, firing home a penalty after Stefan Mugosa was hacked down in the box, and they could have had a second moments later but for Andreas Isaksson, who got a hand to Fatos Beciraj's close-range effort.

Montenegro continued to chase the game, forcing the Swedes onto the backfoot for much of the second period, but the home rearguard held firm.

Ibrahimovic fought hard to complete his hat-trick and was forced to change shirts after his right sleeve was ripped off in one of many over-zealous duels with the Montenegrin backline, before being substituted in the final minute to rapturous applause.

Xherdan Shaqiri secured all three points for the visitors late on

Switzerland moved up to second in Group E as they claimed a 2-1 comeback victory over Lithuania in Sunday's European Championship qualifier at Zalgiris Stadium.

Fedor Cernych handed the hosts a shock lead against the run of play midway through the second half, but Josip Drmic netted an equaliser five minutes later before Xherdan Shaqiri fired home a late winner to extend their unbeaten run to seven matches.

The result in Vilnius sees the Swiss move up a spot into second where they trail leaders England by six points, while Igoris Pankratjevas' hosts drop down to fifth following Estonia's 2-0 win over bottom side San Marino.

The hosts came out of the blocks with intent and Egidijus Vaitkunas tested Yann Sommer with a powerful 25-yard free-kick in the opening exchanges, but the Borussia Monchengladbach goalkeeper kept his strike out.

Linas Klimavicius headed Vykintas Slivka's corner wide after 10 minutes before Switzerland began to dominate with Drmic firing over the crossbar and Granit Xhaka narrowly missing the target with a long-range effort as the visitors pressed for an opener.

The hosts came back with a half chance from Slivka midway through the first half, but Sommer did well to save the strike with his feet.

The Swiss came close to taking the lead eight minutes before the break with two chances in quick succession but Tomas Mikuckis blocked Fabian Schar's header before Ricardo Rodriguez fired Shaqiri's resulting corner wide from just outside the box.

Wolfsburg defender Ricardo Rodriguez almost put Switzerland in front two minutes into the second half with a chance that Mikuckis blocked before it became to dangerous inside the penalty box.

Switzerland's Vytautas Andriuskevicius goes airborne to secure a loose ball as Josip Drmic watches on

Deividas Matulevicius sent an effort wide from 25 yards out as the hosts tried to force their way back into the game in a bid to end their three-match losing streak and they managed to break the deadlock with a surprise opener after 64 minutes.

Vaitkunas collected the ball on a break, sending a cross in to the centre of the box for Cernych and the 24-year-old striker made no mistake as he lobbed the ball in low past the beaten Sommer.

But their lead lasted less than five minutes as Bayer Leverkusen's Drmic, who had a shot saved by Emilijus Zubas 10 minutes after the break, scored the equaliser as he found the back of the net after firing Blerim Dzemaili's header over the line to make it 1-1.

Zubas tipped Dzemaili's volley over the bar before Shaqiri sent his close-range shot into the stands as Switzerland pressed for a winner as the match wore on.

The away side were rewarded with a winner to go second in the Group E table thanks to an 84th-minute winner from Inter Milan winger Shaqiri, who slotted Breel Embolo's assist into the bottom corner to clinch all three points.

Belarus 0-1 Spain: David Silva settles the game with a strike on the stroke of half-time in Vicente del Bosque's 100th game

David Silva scored for Spain with a well taken goal against Belarus
Belarus produced a gallant display but failed to find an equaliser
Silva's 23rd goal for Spain draws him level alongside Alfredo di Stefano

Spain coach Vicente del Bosque celebrated 100 games in charge with a 1-0 victory over Belarus in a Euro 2016 qualifier on Sunday -- Manchester City's David Silva scoring the goal.

Victory at the Borisov Arena kept European champions Spain in second place in Group C with 15 points from six games -- three points behind group leaders Slovakia.

The 64-year-old Del Bosque, the first Spain manager to reach the century milestone, gave a start to 22-year-old Juventus forward Alvaro Morata, who scored his first goal for his country in March against Ukraine.

Despite being without the injured Andres Iniesta, the visitors immediately took control of the game.

Pedro Rodriguez had a good chance from close range after two minutes but hit the ball straight at goalkeeper Andrei Gorbunov.

Morata then fired a shot into the side netting from an acute angle after another Spanish attack.

Iker Casillas, who was winning his 162nd cap, was a virtual spectator as Belarus offered little in attack.

Spain eventually went ahead on the stroke of halftime.

Cesc Fabregas sent in a cross from the left flank towards the far post and Gorbunov was unable to cut the ball out and Silva's fine strike put the visitors in front.

Spain are still three points off of the leaders Slovakia in Group C of qualifying for Euro 2016

Belarus offered more in the second half and Sergei Kornilenko had an excellent chance to equalise, but Casillas turned the ball behind with his leg.

Spain could have extended their lead as Santi Cazorla's 20 metre effort forced a fine save from Gorbunov at his near post, while Silva went close put was unable to beat the Belarus goalkeeper after being put through one on one.

Slovenia 2-3 England: Two stunning Jack Wilshere strikes and Wayne Rooney's late finish hands victory to the Three Lions

Milivoje Novakovic put Slovenia ahead with a composed finish in the 37th minute against England
Jack Wilshere equalised with a thunderous strike in the 57th minute, his first international goal for England
Wilshere's second came in the 73rd with a ferocious shot from long range that bettered his first effort
Nejc Pecnik headed Slovenia level on 84 before Wayne Rooney gave England the victory two minutes later

For once the highlights package was worth waiting up for, proof that an England team coached by Roy Hodgson really can play in the name of entertainment.

Even the ITV Twitter feed was lost for words on a night to remember, when Jack Wilshere came of age in an England shirt with two magnificent goals and captain Wayne Rooney scored the 48th of his international career.

Watching England was compelling, with the travelling hordes treated to a performance that veered somewhere between bewildering and euphoric.

Wilshere’s contribution to this game, from his newly-defined, deep-lying position in the centre of midfield, was immense and so were his goals.

Both finishes were a thing of haunting beauty, leaving Wilshere’s left boot and twice rippling the net of Samir Handanvic in the space of 16 second-half minutes.

When Wilshere scored his first, in the 57th minute, it really was win-or-bust for Hodgson after the perplexing half-time substitution that changed the face of this game.

Phil Jones will never be an orthodox right back and there is a good chance that his time in this position has come to a close after his catastrophic first-half contribution.

He carelessly directed a throw-in at an opposition player and moments later, after Milivoje Novakovic had exchanged passes with the impressive figure of Fiorentina forward Josip Illicic, Slovenia went in front.

It prompted Hodgson to reshuffle the pack at half-time, seemingly in desperation as he attempted to resolve a problem that had left England trailing.

Jordan Henderson was asked whether he would be comfortable at right back, nodding his head at Hodgson as he prepared to make the audacious change to his formation.
Adam Lallana, who lost his place following a disappointing performance on the left against Ireland, was thrust into the position just behind Rooney. He made a telling contribution.

His twisting run bemused Slovenia’s defence, cleverly moving them out of position as Wilshere, who had crept unnoticed upfield, waited on the edge of the area. Wilshere’s thunderous drive into the top left corner of the net beat Handanovic’s despairing dive and provided his team with the impetus and energy to go again. They did just that.

The move that led to Wilshere’s second was brisk and purposeful, starting with Henderson’s clever wall pass with Andros Townsend, then into the feet of Lallana. He reacted with an improvised back flick, setting the ball free for Wilshere to curl his effort beyond Handanovic with that magic wand of a left foot.

It should have been the winner but England conceded again when substitute Nejc Pecnik rose above Kieran Gibbs in the 84th minute to beat Joe Hart with a towering header.

Sterling (left) drilled a shot the wrong side of the post from the edge of the area as England started the game in the ascendency

It prompted fury on the touchline, with Hodgson and assistant Ray Lewington flying out of the dug-out to throw a series of tactical instructions to the players.

They need not have worried.
After Slovenia captain Bostjan Cesar had been given the benefit of the doubt for appearing to throw an elbow in the side of Rooney’s head, the England striker recovered to score the third.

It was an ice-cool finish, reading Bojan Jokic’s challenge on Theo Walcott and leaving Handanovic stranded with a goal that nestled neatly in the bottom left corner.

This victory protects England’s unbeaten record, a run that stretches back to a 0-0 draw with Costa Rica in the final group game of a disastrous World Cup.

Finally, we have put Brazil to the back of our minds and, instead, are talking about the quality of goals hitting the back of the net.
